Ridge City signs partnership agreement with Everton

Malta Guinness Ghana Women’s Premier League side, Ridge City Football Club, has signed a partnership deal with Everton Football Club.

The Ghanaian club join Everton’s International Academy Affiliate Programme (EIAAP) with the Merseyside outfit looking to build on the huge progress made in the women’s game in recent years.

With Everton targeting an expansion in the knowledge and expertise of player development processes to affiliated clubs across the world, Ridge City becomes the first African club to join the EIAAP programme.

The Toffees also seek to expand Ridge City’s profile by facilitating and developing the women’s game in Ghana and offering a pathway for players.

The partnership also includes collaboration on player and coach development between the two teams as well as coach education and helping Ridge City establish themselves as a foundation club for women in Ghana.

Speaking about the partnership, CEO of Ridge City, Cleopatra Nsiah Nketiah, said “I am super excited about the partnership. We have been looking for an opportunity like this for a long time and the most important thing for us is that women in Ghana are serious about playing football.

“I feel like our relationship with Everton will help us on that pathway and let our people know that in Ghana you can play football and that there can be a career path, perhaps even having a chance to travel to the UK and trial there.

“The environment and resources Everton can provide is a huge pull and the opportunity to have online coaching programmes to follow, and even potential visits by their coaches, is another real positive that we can tap into, to help our women feel that they are part of something bigger.

“I want to let the world know that we can see a pathway forward for Ridge City and this is a relationship we can’t wait to be a part of.”

Ridge City signs agreement with Everton to become partner club

The Everton Academy curriculum will be shared with Ridge City during a future visit by Paddy Byrne, the club’s International Technical Manager, who also aims to provide techniques employed at Finch Farm to improve player and coaching abilities.

Byrne added: “We are delighted to welcome Ridge City as an inaugural women’s partner club to Everton’s International Academy Affiliate programme.

“I’m excited to work with Cleopatra and her team and help them to build on the solid foundations laid in only four years of existence.

“We feel there is plenty of opportunity for them to grow – and by sharing our values and coaching methods we will build on the affiliate programme in a new territory.

“I am sure this will prove a fruitful partnership for both clubs, and we can’t wait to get started.”

Everton’s International Academy Affiliate Club programme, which is available to grassroots teams, professional sides, youth academies, girls’ and women’s teams, as well as colleges and universities, was launched in 2020.

  • What impact has Brexit had on the UK economy?

Like it – or not – it has been three years since the UK left the European Union.

Since then there has been a pandemic, swiftly followed by an energy crisis.

That has made it hard to decipher exactly what the impact of Brexit has been.

The latest data suggest a hit to the economy – but in some unexpected ways.

    Trade

As the UK pulled out of the single market and customs union in 2021, companies trading with the EU faced new rules, new paperwork and new checks on some goods.

That prompted fears over what would happen to the £550bn of trade between the UK and its nearest trading partner.

There was an initial dip in the amount the UK exported to the EU. Once teething problems were dealt with, trade volumes, recovered to pre-pandemic levels, according to official figures. But it could be argued trade might have grown more if it hadn’t been for Brexit.

When the British Chambers of Commerce surveyed 500 firms recently, more than half of them said they were still grappling with the new system. The red tape may have deterred some small exporters altogether. A study of customs classifications shows the variety of goods we export has diminished.

It is a similar story for imports – volumes have recovered to pre-pandemic levels. But academics at the London School of Economics point out that the price of food imported from the EU – the likes of tomatoes, or potatoes – rose, maybe by as much as 6% over 2020 and 2021. That was before the recent jump in inflation.

On the flipside, that has made it easier for domestic food producers to compete; economists say they may have had a £5bn boost.

It is the bigger picture, however, that is more eye-catching.

Most nations saw international trade collapse at the height of pandemic. Since then, the rest of the G7 countries have seen trade, when compared to the size of their economies, bounce back in a way that hasn’t happened in the UK.

Line chart showing the sum of the UK's imports and exports divided by its GDP, compared to an average of equivalent figures for the other members of the G7. The chart shows that trade in the UK has grown less since the last quarter of 2018.

If you look at the UK’s trade with the rest of the world, as well as trade with the EU, overall it has fallen relative to the size of the UK economy. Trade hasn’t bounced back post-pandemic as fast as it has in other major nations, it has become less important in contributing to our prosperity. “Global Britain” has become less open. It is lagging behind.

    Trade deals

What about new trade deals? They could help – but it is early days still.

In total 71 trade deals have been struck, which is swift progress, but the vast majority just replicate deals Britain had when it was part of the EU.

The UK has signed new deals with Australia and New Zealand – but they are only expected to deliver a tiny boost to trade and even that will take several years. Plus they are controversial – some UK farmers fear they will lose out.

Talks are still taking place with India and members of a trans-Pacific pact. They are taking longer than previous ministers had hoped – but analysts think that taking things more slowly may actually lead to more beneficial agreements.

Trade deals with some of the biggest players, such as the US and China, remain elusive.

    Investment

How much businesses choose to spend on factories, training, equipment and technology, is also affected by our relationship with the EU. And the chancellor acknowledges that investment can turbocharge growth.

But investment has stalled since the referendum, as businesses remain wary of the outlook for the economy. Investment wasn’t great even before 2016, but if it had continued its pre-referendum trend, analysis by the think tank the UK in a Changing Europe suggests it could be about 25% higher than it is now.

Economists argue about how to explain that gap. Some – including the International Monetary Fund – have suggested that uncertainty surrounding Brexit, including the unsettled issue of the Northern Ireland Protocol, have deterred at least some spending. Sir Richard Branson is among the business bosses who have suggested the cost of Brexit red tape would put them off investing in the UK.

The pro-Brexit group, Briefings for Business, claims that the numbers are misleading, and that there isn’t evidence of a Brexit-related hit to investment.

Ultimately, however, a lack of investment means we are a less-efficient, lower-earning economy than we could be.

    Jobs

Leaving the EU also meant changes to the rules on the free movement of labour and the introduction of a points-based immigration system That has prompted complaints from some unlikely quarters.

The chief executive of fashion chain Next, Lord Wolfson and Wetherspoons’ boss Tim Martin both supported Brexit – but both have called for the UK to let in more workers.

A study by the think tanks Centre for European Reform and UK in a Changing Europe suggests that there are 330,000 fewer workers in the UK as a result of Brexit. That may only be 1% of the total workforce – but sectors such as transport, hospitality and retail have been particularly hard hit.

    Wetherspoon pub
Image caption, The boss of Wetherspoons supported Brexit but says the UK now needs to let in more workers from overseas

A lack of workers has resulted in shortages and pushed up bills for customers.

Some commentators argue these constraints will persuade businesses to boost staffs’ skills and invest more.

Meanwhile, in the financial services sector, 7,000 jobs may have been lost, according to a House of Commons report, but that’s far fewer than the 70,000 previously feared.

    What next?

All of the above adds up to an economy that has fared less well amidst the recent upheaval than its peers. The UK is the only major rich economy that remains smaller – poorer – than prior to the pandemic and Brexit may be a factor.

chart showing UK growth since 2019

Overall, the government’s independent watchdog, the Office for Budget Responsibility, thinks the UK will ultimately be 4% worse off, than it would have been if we had voted no to Brexit – although for many voters, Brexit was more about sovereignty than the economy.

But there remains a lot to be settled.

It is not just the Northern Ireland protocol, but also permanent arrangements for industries like financial services, fishing and electric vehicle parts, cooperation on science and ways to reduce red tape.

There are potential gains there and realising them is a matter of political as well as economic strategy.

OFFICIAL: Tottenham sign Spanish full-back Pedro Porro

Tottenham and Sporting CP reached an agreement after breaking off negotiations to close the exit of Pedro Porro to London. The Spanish full-back will move to the English capital after a deal worth up to 50 million euros.

Pedro Porro‘s transfer saga came to an end. After it was almost a done deal, both Tottenham and Sporting CP ended negotiations and the Portuguese club refused to let their winger go. However, the Spaniard declared himself in rebellion and did not train in order to force his exit.

This happened hours later, as both Londoners and Lisbonians resumed negoatiations to, this time, close the deal. Finally, the defender is now a new Spurs player and his arrival in the Premier League was confirmed after a day of back and forth in the operation.

A transfer that is worth up to 50 million euros and which means that clubs such as Real Madrid and Barcelona will see how a promising player who has been excelling in the Portuguese league is slipping through their fingers.

The Spaniard was very happy when he was informed of his signing and thanked the Portuguese club for his departure: “I am grateful to Sporting CP, I love the club, I didn’t train because I was only focused on signing for Tottenham, but I will always be grateful to the club”.

Tesco: More than 2,000 jobs set to go due to store changes

    A shop worker

More than 2,000 roles are at risk at Tesco as it announces more changes to the way it runs its supermarkets.

The grocer said it was planning to cut 1,750 team manager posts across hundreds of its larger stores, while closing roles elsewhere.

A new tier of 1,800 lower paid shift leader positions will take over running its shop floors.

Tesco also announced it will close its counters and hot delis, with staff offered alternative jobs elsewhere.

Britain’s largest supermarket said the axing of its counter and delis from 26 February were due to lack of demand from customers. It is also closing eight pharmacies, moving overnight roles to daytime in 12 stores and reducing hours within some post offices.

The company said team managers who take new shift leader positions will have their pay protected for two years.

Similar changes have already happened at Tesco’s smaller stores, but the grocer is now implementing them at its larger superstores and Tesco Extra shops.

Daniel Adams, national officer of the Usdaw union, which represents Tesco workers, said the announcement would be “especially difficult” for staff in the midst of the rising cost of living.

“We will be doing all we can to support members throughout the process with a view to protecting jobs and, where this is not possible, securing the best possible deal for those affected,” he said.

Jason Tarry, Tesco’s UK and Ireland boss, said the decisions were “difficult”, but added they were “necessary to ensure we remain focused on delivering value for our customers wherever we can, as well as ensuring our store offer reflects what our customers value the most”.

“Our priority is to support those colleagues impacted and help find alternative roles within our business from the vacancies and newly created roles we have available,” he said.

Alongside the planned team manager cuts, a further 350 jobs are at risk in a series of other changes at the company.

It is also cutting some jobs at its head office as well as closing its Maintenance National Operating Centre in Milton Keynes.

Tesco said it was now entering a consultation period with the Usdaw union on the proposals and pointed out that it currently has about 2,000 vacancies across the business.

Bigger supermarkets are having to become more efficient and make savings as they face competition from discounters Aldi and Lidl.

Last week, Asda, Britain’s third largest grocer, said it planned to remove 211 night shift managers and change the hours of 4,137 workers.

It followed similar changes to night time working at Sainsbury’s and Tesco.

Barclays closure means Watton will lose last remaining bank

A market town is to lose its last remaining bank after bosses said it had just 12 regular customers.

The Watton, Norfolk, branch of Barclays will close on 3 May after a 64% reduction in counter transactions in the past year.

The bank said it would keep a presence in the town via one of its “community locations”.

Watton’s mayor, Susan Hebborn, said there would be a post office but the rotary club’s secretary was “appalled”

Roy Challand, secretary of Watton Rotary Club, said: “When we moved here 23 years ago, there were three banks and two building societies and now we’re going to have none.

“In that time, however, the town has more than doubled, it just seems crazy.

“I’m quite elderly myself and there are older people in the town who can’t do online.

“Some of us like to use cash and at the rotary club we raise money and that’s normally done by cash transactions, we don’t run around with card readers.”

    Barclays on Watton's High Street
Image caption, Watton’s Barclays branch, on the High Street, will close on 3 May

Barclays said the way people bank today was “unrecognisable from 50 years ago”.

It said the number of banking transactions that took place in a branch was less than 10%.

The firm said in Watton there had been a 64% reduction in counter transactions in the past year, compared to the 12 months to March 2020.

It said 86% of its customers at the branch used alternative ways to bank, including via the telephone, online and mobile app.

The company said just 12 regular customers used the branch exclusively for their banking needs and staff would now be getting in touch with regular and vulnerable users.

Ms Hebborn said if there was not enough footfall then Barclays was “justified” in closing.

She said loss of the bank would mean another empty building on the high street but added, “hopefully, that will be short term”.

“We have to look forward to the future.”

  • Change in minority caucus leadership a needless distraction – Ablakwa

Change in minority caucus leadership a needless distraction – Ablakwa

The Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has described the issue surrounding the change in the leadership of the minority caucus as a needless distraction.

According to him, the focus of the National Democratic Congress and its MPs should be on helping find solutions to the numerous challenges the people of Ghana are facing.

Ablakwa said that the issue surrounding the change in the minority leadership has overshadowed important national issues including the debt exchange programme and corruption allegations in the government’s COVID-19 expenditure, as well as the construction of the National Cathedral of Ghana.

“If you look at the current situation in our country, we are in a very turbulent chaotic time. We are really in crisis and we see what is happening with the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme, where so many people have been forced to take haircuts… we have an avalanche of corruption reports, look at the Auditor Generals’ Report on COVID-19, look at our own exposé.

“The Ghanaian people expect us to be focused on those matters, to offer leadership, to be their voice because that is why they sent us to Parliament.

“So, the point I am making is that, this is a needless distraction,” the MP said in a JoyNews interview monitored by GhanaWeb, on Tuesday, January 31, 2023.

Ablakwa, therefore, called on his colleague National Democratic Congress MPs to finalize the matter on their leadership and move on to national issues.

“So, some of us have been urging colleagues that we have to quickly close ranks, deal with this matter expeditiously and move on to the national issues,” he added.

The change in the leadership of the minority caucus of Parliament has led to some confusion in the NDC, with some members of the party, including some Members of Parliament, saying that the party’s parliamentarians should have been consulted before the move.

The NDC leadership has appointed the former Deputy Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, as the minority leader in the 8th Parliament of Ghana’s Fourth Republic. He replaced the MP for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu.

According to the NDC, Kofi Armah Buah, MP for Ellembele, will take over as the Deputy Minority Leader.

While Kwame Governs Agbodza, MP for Adaklu, will replace Asawase MP Muntaka Mohammed as the Chief Whip.

Ahmed Ibrahim, MP for Banda, has been maintained as the First Deputy Minority Whip, while Comfort Doyo Cudjoe-Ghansah, MP for Ada, is the Second Deputy Minority Whip.

Some MPs of the party have petitioned its National Executive Committee (NEC) to suspend the appointment of the new leadership of the party in Parliament.

The NDC MPs, including Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka (MP for Asawase), Dominic Ayine (MP for Bolgatanga East), and Cletus Avoka (MP for Zebilla), who are calling for the suspension, argue that the appointment was not made by any of the party’s decision-making structures but was imposed by just a few people.

HS2 tunnels under the Chilterns reach halfway point

Two of HS2’s longest tunnels have reached the halfway point of excavation, the rail company said.

Giant tunnelling machines have been excavating the high speed rail project’s route under the Chilterns in Buckinghamshire for the past 18 months.

The machines are half way through the 10-mile tunnel and have excavated enough chalk and flint to fill more than 500 Olympic swimming pools.

Martyn Noak of HS2 Ltd said it was an “important tunnelling milestone”.

Image caption, The tunnels are excavated and lined at a rate of about 15 metres per day, HS2 Ltd said

The Chiltern tunnel is the longest on the HS2 project, which is designed to improve links between London, Birmingham and the north of England.

You can view HS2 Ltd’s route map here.

The project has faced criticism about the impact it would have on the land the route would take, with campaigners fighting against plans to build on woodland.

The two tunnels, which are between the M25 and South Heath, have five shafts for emergency access and/or ventilation near Chalfont St Peter, Chalfont St Giles, Amersham, Little Missenden and Chesham Road.

The 1.3 million cubic metres of chalk and flint that has been excavated will be used for a chalk grassland restoration project at the south portal of the tunnel.

HS2 Ltd said the project would “see the creation of 127 hectares of new landscaping, wildlife habitat and biodiverse chalk grassland”.

Image caption, Mr Noak said it was “great to be able to celebrate the half-way point” of the tunnel

Mr Noak said: “This tunnel will take HS2 underneath the Chiltern hills, safeguarding the woodlands and wildlife habits above ground as well as significantly reducing disruption to communities during construction and operation.

“Once complete, HS2 will offer low carbon journey options linking London with the major cities of the north and releasing capacity for more freight and local trains on our existing mainlines.”

Penny Gaines, chairwoman of campaign group Stop HS2, previously said the project was “based around saving a few minutes on train journeys, but it’s far more environmentally friendly not to travel at all”.

“We’ve all seen how much business can be done through video-conferencing and other technologies,” she said.

Prioritize single mothers in distribution – TUC boss on National Rental Assistance Scheme

The Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana, Dr Anthony Yaw Baah, has appealed for single mothers to be highly considered in the new National Rental Assistance Scheme.

Speaking during the launch of the Scheme in Accra, the TUC boss explained that there is the need for such people to be given premium treatment in the distribution of such national initiatives.

He stressed that while initiatives like this are important, they should really be implemented in the national scope as they are designed, and not limited to only a few parts of the country.

“I’ll want to urge the implementing agency and the ministry that, the TUC will always be there to support this project. We are always willing to help secure accommodation, not only accommodation, but decent accommodation to all workers.

“So, we want to urge you to, as quickly as possible, extend this to all the regions because when you do something and you call it National Rental Assistance Scheme and you limit it to regions – not all the 16 regions, it’s a little problematic. It doesn’t matter how many you support in a region; I think you should try and do that,” he said.

Dr. Anthony Baah further added that in the case of single mothers, it becomes a better deal when they are offered such opportunities, more than when it is offered to others who do not necessarily have dependents.

“I also want to appeal to the ministry and all those who access the application, let’s prioritize women, especially mothers with children and without husbands; the single mothers. You see, if you provide accommodation to a single mother who has two children, it’s much better than providing accommodation for others who have no children. I’m saying this because of the experience I’ve gathered,” he added.

Elon Musk’s Tesla lost $140m on Bitcoin in 2022

    Elon Musk

Tesla made a $140m (£113.5m) loss on its Bitcoin investments in 2022, according to filings.

The electric car maker told the US regulator it lost $204m on Bitcoin overall, though it gained back $64m through trading.

Tesla put $1.5bn into Bitcoin in early 2021, with chief executive Elon Musk saying it would be accepted as payment.

It changed course a few weeks later, and Tesla has since sold most of its Bitcoin holdings.

It now holds about $184m of Bitcoin.

Mr Musk has been among the most high-profile champions of cryptocurrency, with his pronouncements on social media often driving significant trading activity.

Tesla’s February 2021 Bitcoin purchase caused the cryptocurrency to rise in price by more than 25% to $48,000 – a record high at the time.

It rose again in March 2021, when Mr Musk tweeted Tesla would allow customers to make their car purchases using Bitcoin. This enabled people in the US to secure orders with the equivalent of a $100 deposit in Bitcoin.

But the cryptocurrency subsequently fell by more than 10% two months later, when the firm backpedalled on this plan, citing climate change concerns.

According to the UK Treasury, Bitcoin’s global annual energy consumption is estimated to be roughly 39% of the UK’s – and some estimates put the cryptocurrency’s even higher.

Its price soared to almost $70,000 in November 2022 before crashing by more than 50% when Tesla decided to offload most of its holdings.

He impregnated our 2 maids and married them same day: Kyiri Abosom’s wife speaks

Madam Princess Nyarko, the estranged wife of Reverend Christian Kwabena Andrews popularly known as Osofo Kyiri Abosom, has spoken on news that she had left the marriage.

Kyiri Abosom the General Overseer of the Life Assembly Worship Centre and founder of Ghana Union Movement (GUM) recently disclosed that his wife had left him.

In a video, the preacher-politician claimed his wife left because he had an affair which resulted in the birth of a beautiful baby.

Downplaying the rift in his marriage, the 2020 flagbearer of GUM said that he was not concerned about the wife’s decision to leave because there were many attractive women in the world.

    Kyiri Abosom’s wife ‘exposes’ him

But in an interview with Gh Page TV, Kyiri Abosom’s wife has refuted his claims describing the ‘man of God’ as a womaniser.

According to Madam Princess Nyarko, Kyiri Abosom had affairs with all the maids who stayed with them during their 13 years together without any regard for their age.

On top of his womanising, she added, her husband often beat her up whenever she complained about his infidelity.

Fed up with everything, she has thus decided to leave after the marriage after her husband got two of their maids pregnant and proceeded to ‘secretly marry them’ on the same day.

The peeved Princess Nyarko made many other claims against her now estranged husband.

  • Ipswich business group begins new bid for city status

A new campaign by a business group to get city status for Ipswich has begun.

Ipswich Central has started an engagement project, declaring “it’s time for an upgrade”.

The group said the project was about “gathering evidence” to present a case to the local council, so it could be prepared for when the next round of city bids begins.

No new city status competitions have been announced by the government.

There are currently 55 cities in England. If granted, Ipswich would become the first city in Suffolk.

During the last city bid in 2021, Ipswich MP Tom Hunt objected, saying his constituents did not support it.

Ipswich Central chief executive Sophie Alexander-Parker said the engagement project needed to include views from people across the city.

She said: “This is about gathering the evidence, building the narrative and being able to present a case of support for city status.”

Ipswich Central “fully supports Ipswich Borough Council in submitting a bid if and when the time comes again”, she said.

The group has written to the council’s leader in support of a bid being developed.

Ipswich has “so much to put on show” and has a lot to offer residents, visitors and businesses, Ms Alexander-Parker said.

She said: “Ipswich is the hub of Suffolk and East of England – the place where digital and other skills are grown, we must harness this.”

Central Suffolk and North Ipswich MP, Dr Dan Poulter, told the BBC he was “fully supportive” of the campaign.

Ipswich Borough Council has been contacted for comment.

  • AMA to crack down on traders who display foodstuff for sale on bare floor at Agbogbloshie

AMA to crack down on traders who display foodstuff for sale on bare floor at Agbogbloshie

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced plans to deal decisively with traders who display their goods on the bare floor for sale and at unauthorised places at Agbogbloshie market, the biggest food market in Accra.

According to the AMA, its Public Health Officials would begin a special operation to crack down on the traders at Agbogbloshie market on the 1st of February 2023, throughout the month, to ensure the safety of both traders and buyers.

The Chief Executive of the AMA, Elizabeth Naa Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey disclosed this on Tuesday when she paid an unannounced visit to the market ahead of an exercise to decongest the city.

She noted that as part of the special operation traders found selling behind the dwarf wall and along the road, would be arrested, fined and prosecuted adding that vehicles parked on the shoulders of the road would be towed.

“We are going to enforce the bye-laws to the latter. Traders selling behind the Agbogbloshie market dwarf wall will not be spared, anyone caught will be arrested, fined or sent to court…The traders have already been educated not to display their foodstuff on the bare ground for sale but the practice persists. We will enforce the law and ensure that they leave the mandated 3 feet gap between the ground and their foodstuff,” she said.

The AMA boss who led the team reiterated that some of the traders after all the education and engagements over the years against displaying their goods on the bare ground and at unauthorised places, continue to go contrary and therefore the Assembly would not show any mercy in dealing with such offenders anymore.

She also cautioned buyers to refrain from buying from the roadside of all the markets in Accra to avoid arrest and prosecution while bemoaning the possibility of getting involved in an accident while displaying goods at or buying from the roadside.

With deep concern, the mayor again admonished traders to erect platforms on which their goods would be displayed for sale instead of displaying them on the bare floor to avoid contamination.

She also warned traders and commuters against littering and indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) through its Public Health Department prosecuted 477 environmental health and sanitation offenders in 2022 representing 61% out of the 784 cases recorded for the year.

The offences included; accumulation of refuse, food safety issues, waste collection registration failure, unsanitary drains, overgrowth of weeds, open defecation, littering in the city centre and other environmental health and sanitation offences contrary to the Public Health Act 851 (Act 2012), AMA 2017 Bye-laws.

Assemblyman blames ECG for pole mounted in the middle of the road

The Assemblyman for Pankorono Estate Electoral Area in the Ashanti Region, Nana Kwadwo Pimpim, says the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is to blame for

He said officials of for miscalculating the positioning of an electric pole in the middle of the Pankorono Estate-B line road.

Over the weekend, a video of an electric pole mounted in the middle of a road went viral on social media.

He admitted the video came from his area, adding that the poles were two but one had been removed.

The Assemblyman laid the blame on the officers of the ECG while reacting to the issue on the Ghana Yensom morning show hosted by Odehyeeba Kofi Essuman on Accra 100.5 FM on Tuesday, January 31, 2023.

He said the ECG officers might have miscalculated the positioning of the pole in the area because the roads were not properly demarcated.

He explained that for sometime, the area had been lagging in terms of roads, but that it can now boast of 80 per cent roads under construction.

Because of the bad state of the road some of the electric poles to supply electricity to the home of residents were mounted without recourse to the proper demarcation of the road.

He said the electric pole emerged because of the construction of the road by Synohdro.

He said this would not have been an issue if the road had not been constructed by the government.

He was quick to add that an emergency meeting has been held between the contractor and the officials from the ECG for the road map for the pole to be moved from the middle of the road.

He gave the assurance that the pole will surely be moved from the middle of the road by the close of this week.

He took the opportunity to thank the Member of Parliament for Tafo-Pankorono Constituency, Ekow Vincent Assifuah, and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Old Tafo Municipal Assembly, Lord Inusah Lansah, for the roles they played in having roads in the area constructed.

  • Brexit’s a complete disaster for trade – Shropshire business owner

Brexit’s a complete disaster for trade – Shropshire business owner

Three years on since the UK left the European Union (EU), a Midlands business owner has described the move as a “complete disaster”.

Nic Laurens, who runs an abrasives supply firm in Shropshire, moved 90% of his company to the Republic of Ireland in order to remain in the EU.

Higher costs and piles of paperwork to export goods left customers with four-week waits for orders, he said.

The government has previously said trade with the EU was “rebounding”.

It said recent data showed “trade to both EU and non-EU countries is above pre-Covid levels”.

However, Mr Laurens, a former Conservative councillor, said Brexit had left his firm facing filling out 24 forms to export goods into the EU.

“Brexit has [caused] barriers to trade and additional costs that you have to pass on to the consumer,” he told the BBC.

“We’ve had to completely rethink our business model.

“The UK hasn’t grown, it has stagnated, but the Irish side of the business has gone from strength to strength.”

    Tool parts on a shelf
Image caption, Mr Laurens’ company supplies abrasive tool parts

All of the products at his company, Severn Diamond Tools and Abrasives, are manufactured abroad.

“We never ship anything from the UK to Ireland anymore. The last time we did, it took four weeks for a parcel to arrive to the customer. Before Brexit it used to take three days,” Mr Laurens said.

“As a business, we have no plans to invest in the UK market because of the uncertainty around the government.”

Nationally, when the British Chambers of Commerce surveyed 500 firms, more than half of them said they were still grappling with the rules for trading within the Union.

The red tape may have deterred some small exporters altogether. A study of customs classifications shows the variety of goods British businesses export has diminished.

Leaving the EU also meant changes to the rules on the free movement of labour and the introduction of a points-based immigration system that has prompted complaints from some unlikely quarters.

    Shamim Husein-Miya,
Image caption, Ms Husein-Miya says recruitment in the hospitality took a hit after Brexit

Shamim Husein-Miya, the business director of Five Rivers Restaurant, has said the Walsall firm has had to adapt the way it recruits staff. “As a business, we looked at overseas recruitment for many years before Brexit, but now it has been more challenging.”

However, as many around the country struggle to cope with the rising cost-of-living, the restaurateur said it had boosted staffing levels, with many people now seeking second jobs and other means of income.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has predicted the UK economy will shrink and perform worse than other advanced economies, including Russia, as the cost of living continues to hit households.

The IMF forecasts the UK economy will contract by 0.6% in 2023, rather than grow slightly as previously predicted.

However, the IMF also said it thought the UK was now “on the right track”.

The UK government has previously said Brexit “opens new opportunities for UK businesses”.

Speaking in December, it said: “Despite difficult global economic headwinds, UK-EU trade is rebounding, with recent data showing that UK trade to both EU and non-EU countries is above pre-Covid levels,” adding exporters had been provided with “practical support” with post-Brexit trading arrangements.

“We’ve also removed 400 trade barriers across 70 countries in the past two years, removed tariffs on £30bn worth of goods and cut £1bn business costs arising from current retained EU law,” a spokesperson added.

  • I’m the only one who can win 80% of votes from Ashanti Region, reduce NDC’s strength in Volta – Alan

I’m the only one who can win 80% of votes from Ashanti Region, reduce NDC’s strength in Volta – Alan

New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful, Alan Kyerematen has made a strong case for the delegates of the party to choose him as their candidate for the 2024 elections.

Speaking in an interview on Angel FM on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, Alan said that the party needs a candidate who can win not less than 80 percent of the votes in the Ashanti Region.

The former trade and industry minister added that not only can he win the party over 80 percent of the votes in the Ashanti Region but he can pull a good number of votes for strongholds of the largest opposition party, the NDC.

“We are not just looking for a flagbearer, we are looking for someone who can help the NPP retain power… Everybody knows that the Ashanti Region is the backbone of the NPP… And so for a difficult election, which I perceive is going to happen in 2024, you need a candidate that is going to win at least 80 percent of the votes in the Ashanti Region to guarantee us victory.

“You need a candidate who can do two things, consolidate your base and reduce the strength of your opponent. We all know that the base of the NDC is the Volta Region but many people have been asking why Voltarians like me so much.

“Everybody in Ghana knows that the people of the Volta Region have taken me to be one of them. I believe that I am the candidate who can win 80 percent of the votes in the Ashanti Region and also compete with the NDC in the Volta Region for their votes to be reduced,” he said in Twi.

Alan added that he has name recognition and he is known in every corner of Ghana.

“I have been working with Akufo-Addo all these years and there is no village where Akufo-Addo is known where I’m not known,” he said.

The former Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen, is expected to face stiff competition from the likes of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former Food and Agriculture Minister, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, for the flagbearership position of the NPP.

  • HSBC staff get a uniform of jumpsuits and jeans

HSBC staff get a uniform of jumpsuits and jeans

HSBC has become the latest big company to announce a shift to more casual uniforms for 4,000 branch staff.

The new range includes jumpsuits and “menopause-friendly” garments for women, ethnic-wear, including tunics and hijabs, and chinos and jeans.

Last month, British Airways unveiled its first new uniform for 20 years, including a jumpsuit for female ground staff and cabin crew.

HSBC is to close 114 more UK branches from April, with about 100 jobs going.

The bank said the uniform re-design mirrored the “more casual new look of the banks’ branches”.

HSBC UK’s director of distribution, Jackie Uhi, said the days of “bowler-hatted bankers and intimidating bank branches with rows of screens” was over.

“The modern day banker is still smart and professional but much more casual and approachable,” she said.

“Our branch colleagues are the public face of the bank, so what they wear does not only need to reflect the brand, it needs to look good, be practical, comfortable and hard-wearing, while taking into account specific human needs like those who are pregnant or going through the menopause.”

    ‘Maximum comfort’

The bank said the fit, style and material of the new outfits had been designed to provide “maximum comfort” when people were experiencing menopause symptoms.

They include a fit-and-flare shape jersey dress, V-neck tunic, tailored jumpsuit, jersey tees and a chino knee-length skirt.

    Image caption, BA’s new jumpsuit

It comes after Virgin Atlantic announced last year that it was taking a “fluid approach” to uniforms which allowed staff to choose their clothing “no matter their gender”. The airline will allow male pilots and crew to wear skirts and female colleagues to choose trousers.

Meanwhile BA plans to roll out its revamped uniforms, designed by Ozwald Boateng, for 30,000 staff this spring.

Initially its jumpsuit will be for female ground staff but is set to be made available to cabin crew after further trials. The suit also includes a tunic and hijab option.

HSBC’s said its new uniforms, which took two years to develop, were its “most sustainable” yet. They are made from recycled polyester, dissolving plastic, ocean recovered plastic and sustainable cotton.

The unveiling comes months before HSBC begins another round of bank branch closures in the UK, shutting 114 sites. It will leave the lender with 327 outlets.

The bank has previously said banking remotely was becoming the norm for “the vast majority of us” and the number of people using banks was at an “all-time low”.

It has said it would try to redeploy affected staff, but about 100 would still lose their jobs.

Spurs coach Conte to have surgery to remove gallbladder

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte will undergo surgery to remove his gallbladder on Wednesday, the Premier League club announced.

The Italian, 53, faces a spell away from the dugout after a medical assessment decided an operation was needed to ease severe abdominal pain.

“Following a diagnosis of cholecystitis, he will be undergoing surgery to remove his gallbladder today and will return following a period of recuperation,” a Tottenham statement read. “Everyone at the club wishes him well.”

Former Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan boss Conte took over at Spurs in November 2021, leading his team to Champions League qualification in his first season in charge.

Spurs sit fifth in the Premier League with 36 points and three points behind Manchester United in fourth, in other words, in the race for the Champions League qualification places.

  • Pope Francis in DR Congo: A million celebrate Kinshasa Mass

Pope Francis in DR Congo: A million celebrate Kinshasa Mass

Pope Francis has celebrated one of his biggest Masses, with around a million attendees in Democratic Republic of Congo’s capital, estimates say.

Huge crowds started to gather in Kinshasa well before dawn, including scores of schoolgirls dressed in white who danced along the Pope’s route.

A public holiday was declared, so as many people as possible could attend.

Around half of DR Congo’s population is Catholic – the largest Catholic community in Africa.

It is more than 37 years since a pope had visited the mineral-rich but conflict-ridden country.

A 700-person choir, that had been practising together long before the pontiff was originally due to visit last July, had been assembled specifically for the event. The Pope’s original visit had to be postponed because of poor health.

There had been some murmurings that the Pope has not been as critical of DR Congo’s political leadership as some had hoped, but the Mass at N’dole airport was a joyful event, and the pontiff did have a strong message of peace for those engaging in conflict in the country.

On the second of his six-day visit to Africa, he said warring sides should forgive one another and grant their opponents a “great amnesty of the heart”.

He went on to espouse the benefits of cleansing one’s heart of “anger and remorse, of every trace of resentment and hostility”.

Wednesday’s Mass was tipped to be one of Pope Francis’ largest-ever Masses, second only to one held in the Philippines in 2015, according to Christopher Lamb, the Rome correspondent of the Catholic magazine The Tablet.

In an interview with the BBC’s Newsday radio programme, he said Catholicism was growing in Africa: “This is the future of the church and the growth of the Catholic Church in Africa really is so important to the future of Catholicism.”

On Tuesday, the Pope met President Félix Tshisekedi and delivered a speech condemning historical exploitation of Africa’s resources, which he described as “economic colonialism”.

He also addressed DR Congo’s plight, as minerals have played a key role in more than three decades of armed conflict there: “Hands off the Democratic Republic of the Congo! Hands off Africa! Stop choking Africa, it is not a mine to be stripped or a terrain to be plundered.”

However, a planned visit to the eastern city of Goma has been cancelled for security reasons. The eastern part of DR Congo is facing escalating violence as security services fight against armed militia groups.

According to the United Nations, some six million people have been forced to flee their homes in DR Congo.

That is one of the largest populations of displaced people in the world, alongside places like Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria and Ukraine.

Most of the displaced are in the eastern provinces of South Kivu, North Kivu and Ituri.

Burnley FC sign Anderlecht youngster Enock Agyei

Burnley Football Club has officially announced the signing of talented young attacker Enock Agyei from Anderlecht on a four-and-a-half-year deal.

The 18-year-old will immediately begin a season-long loan with Steven Defour managed K.V. Mechelen in Belgium.

The attacker, who transferred from RSC Verviers to the Anderlecht academy in 2015, has advanced through the ‘Purple and White’ development system while frequently playing for the U21 team.

Agyei, who is already a member of the Belgium U21 squad, will now get first-team experience in the Belgian Pro League under Defour’s direction before joining the Clarets again in the summer.

After signing his contract on January transfer deadline day, Agyei said: “It is a new change for me. It is something that will help my development and my career.

“I spoke with Vincent and he persuaded me to come here and I think it is going to be a great chapter in my career,”

  • Green projects are boosting UK growth – CBI report

Green projects are boosting UK growth – CBI report

The transition to a greener economy is worth £71bn and has brought jobs and investment to parts of the UK experiencing industrial decline.

Those are the key findings of a new report written by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI).

The drive to reach net zero emissions involves more than 20,000 businesses, it calculates.

Some 840,000 jobs are linked to sectors ranging from renewable energy to waste management, it adds.

Titled Mapping The Net Zero Economy, the report looked at the parts of the UK that have benefited most from policies aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions.

Scotland and English regions, such as Tyneside, Teeside, Merseyside and the Humber, had all done better than average, with the green economy being stronger and contributing more to growth than in London and the South East.

Green jobs also pay significantly more, the report says, with the average wage (£42,600) significantly above the national average (£33,400).

“The net zero economy is addressing levelling up and the UK’s productivity problem,” says Peter Chalkley, the director of the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) who commissioned the research.

“But if the UK doesn’t build on the good work that has already been done, we will lose out and lose jobs.”

The UK has long been seen as a leader in green technology, in particular offshore wind, but this position is at risk.

“Other places (in the world) are really setting out their stalls for how they’re going to capture that investment,” says Tom Thackeray from the CBI who carried out the analysis, adding that there is now a “global competition” for green funding.

The passing last year of landmark legislation in the United States called the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) has, analysts say, changed the global dynamic for green investment. The Bill puts aside $369bn (£297bn) for action related to tackling climate change and many companies now see America as the best destination for their money.

“There’s an excitement [about the US since the IRA], so the challenge for us is to reignite the excitement back in the UK,” says Chris Stark, the chief executive of the Climate Change Committee, a public body that advises the UK government on its green policies.

The view that the UK is losing momentum was also in Tory MP Chris Skidmore’s Mission Zero report last month in which he said the UK was falling behind in the net zero race.

Restrictive planning regulations for onshore wind and solar, and a lack of consistency in policy were among many issues Mr Skidmore cited as holding back investment from the private sector.

“We need to really speed up planning and consent for renewables and for network connections and for vehicle charging,” says Emma Pinchbeck, the chief executive of trade association Energy UK.

“It takes 12 years to build a wind farm in this country, when it should take one.”

Responding to the report and the criticism of policy, a government spokesman said the UK was leading the world on tackling climate change.

“Our plans will support up to 480,000 jobs by 2030,” they said. “We are driving an unprecedented £100bn of private sector investment by 2030, backed by around £30bn in funding from the government since March 2021 to achieve our aims.”

Tottenham winger Gil returns to Sevilla on loan

Tottenham winger Bryan Gil has returned to Sevilla on loan for the remainder of the season, 18 months after leaving the club.

Gil has struggled for regular game-time since joining Spurs ahead of the 2021-22 season, spending the second half of the last campaign on loan at Valencia, whom he helped to the Copa del Rey final.

The 21-year-old, who has made four appearances for Spain’s senior side, has played just 148 minutes across four Premier League outings for Antonio Conte’s team this season.

Sevilla sit 13th in LaLiga – just two points clear of the bottom three – after enduring a disappointing campaign to date and reportedly do not possess a clause to make Gil’s return permanent.

Jorge Sampaoli’s side also agreed a deal to sign midfielder Pape Gueye on loan from Marseille until the end of the season on Monday, as they look to avoid becoming further embroiled in a battle for survival.

Meanwhile, Denmark international Thomas Delaney has left Sevilla for Hoffenheim and left-back Ludwig Augustinsson has joined Real Mallorca, also in loan deals lasting until the end of the season.

Sevilla travel to LaLiga leaders Barcelona for their next fixture on Sunday, having responded to a Copa del Rey defeat against Osasuna by beating Elche 3-0 on Saturday.

  • Costa cappuccino has five times more caffeine than Starbucks’

Costa cappuccino has five times more caffeine than Starbucks’

For many of us coffee offers a much needed boost, but we may be getting much more – or less – caffeine than we bargained for at popular High Street coffee shops.

Consumer group Which? measured the caffeine in drinks at five big chains and says it found “huge differences”.

A medium cappuccino at Costa Coffee for example has 325mg of caffeine – five times more than Starbucks’.

Meanwhile Pret was found to have the strongest espresso and filter coffee.

Which? said consumers should be alert to caffeine levels.

“Our research shows you may be consuming significantly more, or less, caffeine than you bargained for,” said its nutritionist Shefalee Loth.

“Most of the time this shouldn’t be an issue but if you drink a lot of coffee or need to limit your caffeine intake you might want to consider what you’re ordering and where from.”

    Simon and Sarah
    Image caption, Simon and Sarah

Simon, 64, told the BBC he normally preferred small, independent coffee shops but did sometimes go to Costa and Pret.

“I’m not really strongly affected by caffeine, I can drink coffee in the evening and it doesn’t really affect me that much,” he said.

Guppy Bahtoye, 37, from Wolverhampton told the BBC: “I like my coffee – in fact, I travel that extra bit just go to Costa because I like the way they make their lattes.

“I was a bit surprised by this survey – by the extent of the variation of caffeine content. I had a latte once from McDonalds that gave me this huge caffeine kick…and then I crashed. I had to take a nap afterwards.”

    McDonald’s declined to comment.

Caffeine is a natural stimulant that can make you more alert. However, some people are sensitive to it or need to avoid it for health reasons, such as being pregnant.

Which? measured the caffeine levels in drinks like cappuccino and espresso at Caffè Nero, Costa, Greggs, Pret a Manger and Starbucks, and found big differences.

: Table showing different levels of caffeine in High Street coffee according to Which? with an espresso from Caffe Nero containing 45mg, Costa 100mg, Greggs, 75mg, Pret 180mg and Starbucks 33mg, while for a cappuccino the figures are Caffe Nero 110-115mg, Costa 325mg, Greggs 197mg, Pret 180mg and Starbucks 66mg

For example, Costa’s cappuccino was strongest, with caffeine equivalent to four cups of tea, while Starbucks’ contained the least at 66mg – less than a single cup of tea.

One factor that can impact caffeine content of drinks is the type of coffee bean. Of the two main types used, Arabica beans contain around half the caffeine of Robusta beans, and there are also variations in taste between the two.

Costa Coffee said the amount of caffeine in its drinks varied depending on size of a drink and the type of coffee used.

“We would encourage customers to be aware of the caffeine content in their favourite Costa coffee to ensure it is right for their dietary requirements or lifestyle choice,” a spokeswoman said.

Pret declined to comment, while the BBC has contacted Caffè Nero, Greggs and Starbucks for comment.

Mahama Ayariga condemns military killings in Bawku, calls for calm

The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has condemned the Ghana Armed Forces over the killing and abuse of some of its members on some of his constituents, stating that he will go all out to ensure he gets redress.

According to a statement issued under the name of the MP, on the night of Tuesday, January 31, 2023, there were reported gunshots heard in the Bawku township.

This, he added, was part of efforts by the military to ensure that it brought the situation under control, but things spiralled and, in the end, some six civilians are said to have been killed at the hands of the soldiers.

He said that the people who were killed were first chased and then shot, per the information available to him.

“Let me condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the infliction of mortal casualties on innocent civilians by members of the Ghana Armed Forces in Bawku today. This is totally unacceptable and I will leave no stone unturned in my fight for redress for these victims.

“Report reaching me is to the effect that there were gun fires last night across the Bawku town. The military, as part of their efforts to curtail the situation, chased anyone they saw, Information reaching is to the effect that they were chasing some people and other people saw those being chased running and also took to their heels. The military shot at them and in the process killed six civilians,” he stated.

Mahama Ayariga further explained that one of the people who were killed was a little boy who had also gone into hiding, bringing the number of reported deceased to 7.

He added that some other persons were physically abused, including an assemblyman.

“A little boy who also run to hide behind some grasses was also shot. The grass caught fire and burnt him to death, making the number 7. In addition, the Assemblyman for Missiga Electoral Area was physically assaulted by military personnel and sustained serious injuries.

“Several unspeakable brutalities have been reported,” he added.

Vehemently condemning what transpired in his constituency, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP called out the continuous attacks of the military on his citizens.

He has therefore called on the government to immediately investigate the matter, while calling for calm among the people of the Bawku township.

“This is totally unacceptable and I condemn the military in very strong terms. There was similar killing of two men at patelmi because they allegedly broke curfew laws. This is preposterous. The Government must immediately investigate this report and bring to book the perpetrators of this dastardly act.

“I urge everyone to lay down their weapons and let’s work towards peace and not give opportunities to others to inflict such inhuman treatment on us,” he added.

There has been a surprise move on the final day of the winter transfer window. Arsenal have moved quickly to strengthen their midfield for the Premier League title race and have managed to secure a star signing.

The Gunners have agreed a last-minute deal with Chelsea for Jorginho, one of the Blues’ key players. The 31-year-old Italian playmaker will sign a contract with Arteta’s side until 2024 with an option for a further year and Graham Potter’s side will receive £12m for his transfer.

The role of Spaniard Mikel Arteta in the negotiations between the two clubs is reported to have been key to the player’s arrival. In addition, Arsenal went all out for the Italian as their first choice to reinforce their midfield was Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo, however, due to the Seagulls’ refusal to sell their rising star, the Emirates Stadium outfit went for the Chelsea player.

In this way, Jorginho leaves Chelsea having made history. The former Napoli player joined the English club in the 2018/2019 season, and leaves after having played 213 official matches, scoring 29 goals and providing 8 assists. Furthermore, it could be said that the midfielder’s career at the club has been quite successful, being crowned Champions League champion in 2020/2021, as well as winning the Europa League title in 2018/2019 and the UEFA Super Cup in 2021.

The international with Italy joins Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table on 50 points, five points ahead of City and with a game in hand. On the other side, Chelsea sit 10th with 29 points after a poor season so far and will be looking to make up for that by qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

  • ‘Come clean’ on impact of non-dom tax status, Labour urges

‘Come clean’ on impact of non-dom tax status, Labour urges

Labour has demanded the government publish internal estimates about the effect of abolishing “non-dom” tax status.

The party says it wants ministers to “come clean” about the impact of keeping the “unfair” status ahead of the Budget on 15 March.

It says scrapping non-dom rules would bring in £3.2bn a year to spend on schools and the NHS.

But a Treasury minister said advice to ministers should remain confidential.

Responding to Labour’s call, Financial Secretary to the Treasury Victoria Atkins added that ministers need to be able to receive “free and frank advice” from officials.

She added the government keeps all taxes under review, and would only announce changes during Budgets.

Labour wants to scrap non-dom status, which allows UK residents whose permanent homes are abroad not to pay British taxes on overseas income.

It announced the policy last year, saying it would replace the rule with a shorter-term scheme for temporary residents.

In November, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said he had asked officials at the Treasury to “look into” how much scrapping the policy would raise, following claims from Labour.

On Tuesday, Labour used a motion in Parliament to call for the government to publish the findings before 28 February, two weeks before the spring Budget.

However, MPs voted 305 to 229 to reject the motion.

During the Commons debate, shadow Treasury minister James Murray said non-dom status was an “indefensible 200-year-old tax loophole”, and getting rid of it was a “no brainer”.

He added: “Labour believes that if a person makes Britain their home they should pay their taxes here. That patriotic point should be accepted on all sides of the political divide.”

The SNP supported Labour’s proposals, with the party’s economic spokesman Stewart Hosie saying abolishing non-dom status was about “tax fairness”.

But Ms Atkins said: “In developing policy, ministers must be able to have, if you like, a safe space to be advised by officials.

“That process should not play out in public, especially given the issues that Treasury ministers deal with are often highly market sensitive.”

Last year it emerged that now-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s wife Akshata Murty had non-dom status.

Ms Murty said she did not want the issue to be a “distraction” for her husband, who was chancellor at the time.

Miracles Aboagye provides breakdown of workers at the presidency

The Director of Local Government Services at the Office of the President, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has dismissed reports that there are over 1000 political appointees of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo (presidential staffers) at the Office of the President.

According to him, the majority of the workers at the presidency are public servants who were not appointed by the president.

Miracles Aboagye, who made these remarks in a Peace FM interview, added that he is one of only 337 political appointees at the presidency.

He explained that people are saying there are about 1,000 presidential staffers because they think everybody who works at the presidency is a political appointee.

“It is never true. It’s false. It is a complete falsehood. It’s a lie. There are no 1000 presidential staffers at the Jubilee House… not everybody that works at the Office of the President is a presidential staffer.

“When you look at the Act that sets up the Office of the President and staffing, we have a category of staff we call presidential staffers. We have technical people, executive assistants, presidential aides, and so forth,” he said in Twi.

He added that 995 people currently work at the Jubilee House, and only 337 of these people are political appointees.

We went on to list the category of people who are now working at the presidency.

    1. Minister of State at the Presidency – 1

    2. Presidential Staffers – 45

    3. Other political appointees – 291

These appointees include the Chief Executive Officers of entities such as the National Investment Bank (NIB), MASLOC, National Identification Authority (NIA), and Scholarship Secretariat as well as other workers of entities which are under the Office of the President.

    4. Public sector employees – 658

These people are gardeners, cleaners, accounts, internal auditors, chief directors, investigators and other public servants under the various departments including the protocol unit, records unit, senior assistant computer programmers, secretarial staff, supply and material management class.

Others include workers of the Ghana Health Service, the Controller and Accountant General, the Audit Service, the Ghana National Fire Service and the Public Works Department.

Sabitzer en route to England to join United

Manchester United could close their next signing very soon. Marcel Sabitzer will arrive at Old Trafford on loan. The Bayern Munich midfielder is already on his way to England.

Manchester United have moved quickly to replace Christian Eriksen, who is out of action until May due to an ankle injury. Marcel Sabitzer will replace the Denmark international.

Eriksen is likely to be ruled out until early May by an ankle injury he suffered in the FA Cup win over Reading. This injury has changed the plans of the English team and they have decided to look for a replacement as soon as possible.

Yannick Carrasco, who currently plays for Atletico, offered to play in United’s attack. However, Sabitzer will be the one to play at Old Trafford.

The Bayern Munich player travelled to England earlier this afternoon. The footballer flew from Munich to Manchester to undergo pre-contract medical tests.

  • Tech War: Biden moves to halt US exports to Huawei, reports say

Tech War: Biden moves to halt US exports to Huawei, reports say

The US government has stopped approving licences for American firms to export most items to Chinese technology giant Huawei, according to reports.

It comes as the Biden administration continues to tighten its rules on exports of US technology to China.

Washington has previously accused Huawei of being a threat to US national security and of working with the Chinese Communist Party.

The company and the Chinese government have repeatedly denied the allegations.

The US Commerce Department has told some American firms that it would no longer issue licences for US technology exports to Huawei, according to the Financial Times, which first reported the story.

The move comes as Washington moves towards a total ban on the sale of US technology to the Chinese telecom equipment giant, the paper said.

“Working closely with our interagency export controls partners at the Departments of Energy, Defense and State, we continually assess our policies and regulations and communicate regularly with external stakeholders,” a US Commerce Department spokesperson told the BBC.

“We do not comment on conversations with or deliberations about specific companies,” they added.

Huawei declined to comment on the reports.

The Biden Administration has continued to tighten restrictions on Huawei as political tensions between Washington and Beijing increased over Taiwan, where most of the world’s computer chips are made.

In October, US Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security Alan Estevez said “the threat environment is always changing.”

“We are appropriately doing everything in our power to protect our national security and prevent sensitive technologies with military applications from being acquired by the People’s Republic of China’s military, intelligence, and security services,” he added.

For several years the Shenzhen-based Huawei has faced US export restrictions on items for high-speed fifth generation (5G) telecoms equipment and artificial intelligence technology.

In 2019, during the presidency of Donald Trump, US officials added the company to a so-called “entity list.”

It means that US companies need to obtain a licence from the government to export or transfer some technologies, especially over concerns that they will be used by the Chinese military.

However, in that time licences have been granted to some US companies, including Intel and Qualcomm, to supply Huawei with technology that was not related to 5G.

Manasseh asks government to take decisive actions against corruption in placement into category ‘A’ schools

Investigative Journalist has admonished government to take decisive actions against corruption in placement into category ‘A’ schools.

The issue of money changing hands during school placement has always been a grave national concern. With the latest expose’ on the cartel involved in the sale of school placement into Category ‘A’ schools, the call has gone out to duty bearers to help the nation tackle the issue head-on.

Speaking to GBC News, Investigative Journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, who worked on the documentary, said “so far the duty bearers appear to be concerned that this documentary is out and it touches on one of the most critical aspects of our national lives, education.”

It is in this regard that the issue of the Computerized School Selection and Placement System, (CSSPS), going to the highest bidder, must not be allowed to continue.

Mr. Awuni noted that “some have argued that, the practice has been in the system for a very long period of time, only that, it is just now being revealed because the payments are becoming outrageous.”

He welcomes the statements from the education authorities in which they warned parents and guardians not to pay money to anyone posing as agents.

“Before the documentary even came out, both the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service, GES, released press statements warning parents not to pay money to unscrupulous persons who are claiming that they have access to placement.”

“I have also seen and heard reactions from some MPs who called me when the trailer was out. What they said was that they have always raised concerns in the past, but there was no evidence, but this is the basis to proceed with,” he added.

Mr. Awuni hopes that all measures will be adopted to make sure there’s transparency in how children are selected for schools of various categories.

“So, I hope that all these discussions and the anger from certain quarters that have greeted this work will ensure that going forward, we cannot eliminate the problem completely. There will always be bad people, but at least, it should be reduced to the barest minimum, so that integrity and also transparency will guide how children get selected into Senior High Schools across the country.”

Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) is an automated merit-based computerized system which has replaced the laborious Manual System of Selection and Placement (MSSP) of qualified BECE candidates into a second cycle (Senior High Schools and Technical/Vocational) institutions in Ghana.

Alan pledges to continue Akufo-Addo’s good works

Former Minister for Trade and Industry, Mr. John Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, has made a pledge to Ghanaians to continue “the good works” of President Akufo-Addo.

“If Nana Akufo-Addo is leaving office today after doing such tremendous work, then it is imperative for us to get someone who can continue that work. That is the reason why I am sacrificing myself for the NPP to elect me to lead them and bring victory,” he revealed

According to him, looking at policies implemented by the Akufo-Addo-led government like the One District, One Factory, Free SHS, Planting For Food and Jobs, among others, the NPP cannot afford to lose the 2024 election hence making him the flagbearer will be the best for the party to retain power.

“Nana Akufo-Addo has done his best if you look at policies that he has been able to introduce in the country like One District, One Factory, Free SHS, Agenda 111, and many other things like planting for food and jobs,” he said.

He argued that, considering all the development President Akufo-Addo has achieved, it is incumbent on the NPP to tell Ghanaians to vote for the NPP by making him the flagbearer “to continue with the good job,” he said.

Mr. Alan Kyerematen will contest the flagbearership race with about five other members of the governing NPP, including the MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, the former Energy Minister; Boakye Agyarko, the former Agriculture Minister; Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and the former General Secretary, Kwabena Agyapong.

Many have also tipped Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the position but he is yet to officially make his intentions known.

  • Energy bills pushed up by electricity charge, research shows

Energy bills pushed up by electricity charge, research shows

The way electricity prices are set has pushed UK household bills up by £7.2bn over two years, analysis suggests.

Under existing rules, energy suppliers pay the highest price for wholesale electricity no matter how it is made.

Gas-fired power stations are the most expensive way to generate electricity, but only make about 40% of all electricity used by UK homes.

That means homes pay over the odds for power generated any other way, said the Carbon Tracker Initiative.

If an average price was used instead the UK’s electricity bill could be much lower, the not-for-profit climate think tank said.

The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy said it had “already launched a major review” of the electricity market “to radically cut costs” for consumers in the long term.

    Rising costs

The price for wholesale electricity is set by a bidding process, with each generating company saying what it would be willing to accept to produce a unit of power.

When it’s windy and sunny enough to meet demand for electricity through renewables, the wholesale cost drops to close to zero.

    A wind farm

But when it’s not, the wholesale cost is set at the level that all providers will accept – which is the highest bid.

In the past, gas powered generation was among the cheapest ways of producing electricity.

But the cost has soared recently as economies have recovered from the pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine disrupted supplies.

Charging an average price for wholesale electricity would have made the bill in the two years from 2021-22 £7.2bn lower, the Carbon Tracker Initiative said.

According to BBC calculations that’s about £250 per household.

Due to the current system, firms that make renewable energy have been paid much more for their power than it costs them to generate.

For this reason the government introduced a temporary 45% tax in January on what it calls “extraordinary returns” from low-carbon electricity generators in the UK.

    Lower bills

Jonathan Sims, an energy analyst who wrote the CTI report, said the findings showed how the global gas market over the last two years had skewed British power prices.

He said these prices did not reflect the different technology the UK now uses to generate electricity.

The CTI’s report takes into account the need for sources of power that can be fired up immediately such as gas-fired, or provide near constant output such as nuclear, whereas wind power for example is weather-dependent.

The analysis also suggested Europe’s most gas power-dependent countries, the UK and Italy, had consistently paid the highest prices for electricity during the recent period of gas price volatility.

The business department said it was consulting on changes that “would stop volatile gas prices setting the price of electricity produced by much cheaper renewables”.

It also said its windfall tax on renewables generators would “help fund energy bill support for households and businesses”.

The 32-year-old is currently clubless after leaving Qatari side, Al Sadd on mutual terms.

The Toffees are under-fire from supporters after a botched transfer deadline day that saw them miss out on a number of targets as the relegation-threatened club finished with no new signings during the January window.

But Everton could yet deliver on that vow as Ayew prepares to arrive in England for formal discussions over a move to Goodison Park, but they face a fight for his services as a free agent.

The versatile forward is understood to have held preliminary conversations with Toffees chiefs, including sporting director Kevin Thelwell, over a potential move to Goodison Park.

  • I don’t want to die with my vision for Ghana – Ken Agyapong on why he wants to be President

I don’t want to die with my vision for Ghana – Ken Agyapong on why he wants to be President

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has again justified his decision to become President of the republic.

He says he doesn’t want to go to his grave with his vision for the country.

“I don’t want to die with my vision and the only way to let Ghanaians know that a Ghanaian can also do it is to vie for this presidency,” he said in an interview on Good Evening Ghana.

During his interaction with host, Paul Adom Otchere, the Assin Central MP painfully revealed that he has on various occasions proposed innovative solutions to the country’s many woes in the various sectors of the economy. However, all these suggestions have been ignored. He, thus, believes that the only way to make these solutions materialise, is to become the President of the country.

“I’ve always thought that I could effect change in people’s lives without necessarily being President but I’ve come to realise that, especially with the COVID and Russia-Ukraine war; I feel whatever pragmatic approach I have towards development, I should only be President so that my vision will come through and I’ll be able to change the fortunes of this country.

“I have tried it in business fields, I employ a lot of young people but there are still many young people that are not working which clearly indicates to me that being only a businessman, I cannot help this youth enough but indeed if I become president, I can express my views and vision to everyone and bring the whole country together to move this country,” he said.

Despite an initial claim he made in 2021 on the Good Evening Ghana show to the effect that he had no presidential ambition, the legislator made a sudden u-turn and disclosed his intentions to run for presidency.

Touching on this, he noted that: “Indeed previously I wasn’t interested but now I am because successive governments have done their part when it comes to education for instance, most structures in the educational sector are just theory; we need abstract thinkers and pragmatic solutions to our problems.”

  • Bank of Ghana’s revised policy rate ridiculous – Ken Agyapong

Bank of Ghana’s revised policy rate ridiculous – Ken Agyapong

Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, has described as “ridiculous” the Bank of Ghana’s revised monetary policy rate.

On January 30, 2023, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) announced an increase in the monetary policy rate – the rate at which it lends to commercial banks – by 100 basis points to 28%.

The Central Bank attributed the adjustment to the downside risks to inflation and exchange rate depreciation as the major reason.

During an interview with the host of Good Evening Ghana Paul Adom Otchere on January 31, 2023, Mr Agyapong condemned the move, stressing that it is one of the factors fuelling poverty in the country.

“I was watching TV this [January 31] morning and it was announced that the Bank of Ghana has increased the policy rate by 1%, hundred basis points, from 27% to 28%, that is ridiculous.

“In this world, most of the industries and companies that are succeeding in this country are owned by foreigners. Why? The answer is that these foreigners take loans from their country at low rates as 5% and they come here to compete with the local industries.

He explained that since the local industries go for loans with exorbitant interest rates, they are unable to make the most out of the loan since they end up using their profits to pay for the loans together with the high interest rates. This, he said, does not augur well for many indigenous businesses.

Following its 110th meeting, the first for the year 2023, the MPC noted that the underlying inflationary pressures similarly remained elevated, adding that the Bank’s core inflation measure, which excludes energy and utility, accelerated to 53.2 percent in December 2022 from 49.7 percent in November.

“The MPC sees the need to remain vigilant and moderate liquidity in the system to underpin macroeconomic adjustments taking place to drive inflation on a downward path. Under the circumstances, the Committee decided to increase the policy rate by 100 basis points to 28 percent,” a statement released by the Central Bank read.

The upward adjustment in the policy rate means the cost of loans will go up further, and will consequently worsen the cost of doing business in the country.

Just before she left for school on the afternoon of 16 September last year, nine year-old Zin Nwe Phyo was thrilled to be given a new pair of sandals by her uncle.

She made him a cup of coffee, put on the shoes and headed off to school, a 10-minute walk away in the village of Let Yet Kone in central Myanmar. Shortly afterwards, her uncle recalls, he saw two helicopters circling over the village. Suddenly they started shooting.

Zin Nwe Phyo and her classmates had just arrived at the school and were settling down with their teachers, when someone shouted that the aircraft were coming their way.

They began running for cover, terrified and crying out for help, as rockets and ammunition struck the school.

“We did not know what to do,” said one teacher, who had been inside a classroom when the air strikes began. “At first I did not hear the sound of the helicopter, I heard the bullets and bombs hitting the school grounds.”

“Children inside the main school building were hit by the weapons and began running outside, trying to hide,” said another teacher. With her class she managed to hide behind a big tamarind tree.

“They fired right through the school walls, hitting the children,” said one eyewitness. “Pieces flying out of the main building injured children in the next building. There were big holes blown out of the ground floor.”

Their attackers were two Russian-made Mi-35 helicopter gunships, nicknamed “flying tanks” or “crocodiles” because of their sinister appearance and protective armour. They carry a formidable array of weapons, including powerful rapid-fire cannon, and pods that fire multiple rockets, which are devastating to people, vehicles and all but the strongest buildings.

In the two years since Myanmar’s military ousted Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government, air strikes like this have become a new and deadly tactic in a civil war that is now a brutal stalemate across much of the country, conducted by an air force which has in recent years grown to about 70 aircraft, mostly Russian and Chinese-made.

It’s hard to estimate how many have died in such air attacks because access to much of Myanmar is now impossible, making the conflict’s true toll largely invisible to the outside world. The BBC spoke to eyewitnesses, villagers and families over a series of phone calls to find out how the attack on the school unfolded.

The firing continued for around 30 minutes, eyewitnesses said, tearing chunks out of the walls and roofs.

Then soldiers, who had landed in two other helicopters nearby, marched in, some still shooting, and ordered the survivors to come out and squat on the ground. They were warned not to look up, or they would be killed. The soldiers began questioning them about the presence of any opposition forces in the village.

Inside the main school building three children lay dead. One was Zin Nwe Phyo. Another was seven-year-old Su Yati Hlaing – she and her older sister were being brought up by their grandmother. Their parents, like so many in this region, had moved to Thailand to seek work. Others were horribly injured, some missing limbs. Among them was Phone Tay Za, also seven years old, crying out in pain.

The soldiers used plastic bin liners to collect body parts. At least 12 wounded children and teachers were loaded on to two trucks commandeered by the military and driven away to the nearest hospital in the town of Ye-U. Two of the children later died. In the fields skirting the village, a teenage boy and six adults had been shot dead by the soldiers.

This is a country that has long been at war with itself. The Burmese armed forces have been fighting various insurgent groups since independence in 1948. But these conflicts were low-tech affairs, involving mainly ground troops in an endless tussle for territory in contested border regions. They were often little different from the trench warfare of a century ago.

It was in 2012 in Kachin state – just after the air force had obtained its first Mi-35 gunship – that the military first used aerial weapons extensively against insurgents. Air strikes were also used in some of the other internal conflicts which kept burning throughout Myanmar’s 10-year democratic interlude, in Shan and Rakhine states.

However, since the February 2021 coup, the army has suffered heavy casualties in road ambushes carried out by the hundreds of so-called People’s Defence Forces, or PDFs – volunteer militias that were established after the junta crushed peaceful protests against the coup.

So it has been forced to rely on air support – bombing by aircraft suitable for ground attack; or air mobile operations like the one at Let Yet Kone, where gunships blast targets before soldiers arrive to kill or capture any opposition forces they find.

There were at least 600 air attacks by the military between February 2021 and January 2023, according to a BBC analysis of data from the conflict-monitoring group Acled (Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project).

Casualties from these strikes are difficult to estimate. According to the clandestine National Unity Government or NUG, which leads opposition to the military regime, air attacks by the armed forces killed 155 civilians between October 2021 and September 2022.

The resistance groups are poorly armed, with no capacity to fight back against the air strikes. They have adapted consumer drones to launch their own air attacks, dropping small explosives on military vehicles and guard posts, but to limited effect.

It is not clear why Let Yet Kone was targeted by the army. It is a poor village of around 3,000 inhabitants, most of them rice or groundnut farmers, set in the scrubby brown landscape of central Myanmar’s dry zone, where water is scarce outside of the monsoon season.

It is in a district called Depayin where resistance to the coup has been strong. Depayin has seen many armed clashes between the army and PDFs, although not, according to residents, in Let Yet Kone. At least 112 of the 268 attacks recorded by NUG were in southern Sagaing, where Depayin is located.

A spokesman for the military government said after the school attack that soldiers had gone to the village to check the reported presence of fighters from a PDF and from the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), and that they had come under fire from the school. This account is contradicted by every eyewitness who spoke to the BBC. The military has produced no evidence of insurgent activity at the school.

The school had been set up only three months earlier in the Buddhist monastery at the northern edge of the village. It taught around 240 pupils. Residents told the BBC that it is one of more than 100 schools in Depayin which are now being run by communities opposing military rule.

Graphic: Words of mother of seven-year-old Phone Tay Zaw - I found him in a pool of blood with eyes blinking slowly. He said 'Mom, just kill me please'

Teachers and health workers were among the earliest supporters of the civil disobedience movement. In one of the first and most widely-supported acts of defiance against the coup, state workers vowed to withdraw all co-operation with the new military government. As a result a lot of schools and health centres are now being run by communities, not the government.

Phone Tay Za’s mother says she heard the shooting and explosions start about 30 minutes after she had seen her son off to school. But, like Zin Nwe Phyo’s uncle, she assumed it could not be the target of the helicopter gunships.

“After the sound of the heavy guns firing died down I headed toward the school”, she said. “I saw children and adults squatting on the ground with their heads lowered. The soldiers were kicking those who turned their heads up.”

She begged the soldiers to let her look for her son. They refused. “You people care when your own get shot,” one told her, “but not when it happens to us.”

Then she heard Phone Tay Za calling out to her, and they let her go to him inside the ruined classroom.

“I found him in a pool of blood with eyes blinking slowly. He said, ‘mom, just kill me please.’ I told him he would be fine. ‘You will not die’.”

“I cried my heart out, shouting ‘how dare you do this to my son’. The whole monastery compound was in absolute silence. When I shouted, it echoed through the buildings. A soldier yelled at me not to scream like that and told me to stay still where I was. So I sat there in the classroom for about 45 minutes with my child in my arms. I saw three children’s dead bodies there. I did not know whose children they were. I could not look at their faces.”

Phone Tay Za died shortly afterwards. The soldiers refused to let his mother keep his body and took it away. The bodies of Zin Nwe Phyo and Su Yati Hlaing were also taken by the military, before their families could see them, and later secretly cremated.

A thousand kilometres away in Thailand Su Yati Hlaing’s parents were working their shifts in the electronic components factory when they heard that the military had attacked their village.

    Su Yati Hlaing's parents

“My wife and I were in agony. We could not concentrate on our work anymore,” her father said.

“It was around 2:30 in the afternoon so we could not leave. We kept working, with heavy hearts. Colleagues asked us if we were ok. My wife could not hold her tears anymore and started crying. We decided to not do the usual overtime that day and asked our team leader to go back to our room.”

Later that evening they got a call from Su Yati Hlaing’s grandmother telling them she had been killed.

The attack in Let Yet Kone drew international rebuke and horror, but the air strikes continued.

On 23 October air force jets bombed a concert in Kachin State commemorating the anniversary of the start of the KIA insurgency.

Survivors say three huge explosions ripped through the large crowd which had gathered for the event, killing 60 people, including senior KIA commanders and a popular Kachin singer. Many more are thought to have died in the following days after the army blocked the evacuation of those who had been seriously injured in the attack.

After 2 days of fighting in Mobyae, People's Defence Forces (PDF) soldiers clearing the area in Mobyae city, Kayah state. On September 8, a round of fighting began between the Myanmar Army and the People's Defence Forces (PDF) in Mobye, Kayah State.
Image caption, PDFs or volunteer militias have inflicted heavy casualties on the Burmese forces

At the other end of the country the air force bombed a lead mine in southern Karen State, close to the border with Thailand, on 15 November, killing three miners and injuring eight others. The junta spokesman justified the attack on the grounds that the mining was illegal, and in an area controlled by the insurgent Karen National Union.

And only last month, the air force bombed the main base of the insurgent Chin National Front, next to the border with India. It also launched air strikes which hit two churches in Karen State, killing five non-combatants.

This increased capacity for aerial warfare is being sustained by continued support from Russia and China after the coup, despite many other governments ostracising Myanmar’s military regime.

Russia, in particular, has stepped up to become its strongest foreign backer. Russian equipment, like the Mi-35 and the agile Yak-130 ground attack jets, are central to the air campaign against insurgents. China has recently supplied Myanmar with modern FTC-2000 trainers, aircraft which are also well-suited for a ground attack.

Graphic showing some of the main aircraft supplied to Myanmar by Russia and China, including Su-30 fighter jets, modern FTC 2000 trainer jets and Mi-35 helicopter gunships

The high death toll in such attacks has drawn the attention of war crimes investigators. The Myanmar armed forces have often been accused of such crimes in the past – often abuses by ground troops, particularly against the Rohingyas in 2017. But the use of air power brings with it new types of atrocities.

For the survivors of Let Yet Kone, the nightmare did not end on 16 September.

They say many of the children and some of the adults are still traumatised by what they saw that day. The military has continued to target their village, attacking it again three more times, and burning down many of the houses.

This is a poor community. They do not have the resources to rebuild, and in any case they do not know when the soldiers will be back to burn them again.

“Children are everything for their parents,” says one local militia leader. “By killing our children, the military has crushed them mentally. And I must say they have succeeded. Even for me, I will need a lot of motivation to carry on the revolutionary fight now.”

Su Yati Hlaing’s parents are still in Thailand, unable to return after their daughter’s death. They cannot afford the cost of the journey, nor the risk of losing the factory jobs they had always hoped would give their little girl a better life.

“There were many things I had imagined,” says her mother. “I imagined that when I finally went back I would live happily with my daughters, I would cook for them, whatever they wanted. I had so many dreams. I wanted them to be wise and educated, as much as we, their parents, are uneducated. They were just about to begin their journey. My daughter did not even get our affection and warmth closely, because we were away so long. Now, she is gone for forever.”

The BBC analysed attack data from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (Acled), which collects reports of incidents related to political violence and protests around the world. Aerial attacks have been defined as conflict events involving aircraft in specific locations either during an armed clash or as an independent strike. The data covers the period 1 February 2021 to 20 January 2023.

OFFICIAL: Man Utd sign Bayern’s Sabitzer

Manchester United have wasted no time in searching a replacement for Eriksen as the Red Devils have agreed a last-minute deal with Bayern Munich for the loan of Marcel Sabitzer.

Manchester United have managed to reach an agreement with Bayern Munich for the loan of Marcel Sabitzer until the end of the season without option to buy.

According to reports, the Red Devils reached an agreement quickly as the midfielder reportedly agreed immediately to travel to Manchester to play under Ten Hag.

The Old Trafford side’s move has been prompted mainly by the loss of key midfielder Christian Eriksen, who is likely to be out until May after suffering an ankle injury in the FA Cup win over Reading.

The former Bayern Munich player was caught in the afternoon arriving in England to undergo a medical with the Mancunian club. In this way, the Austrian will help fill the gap left by Eriksen’s absence. In addition, the player will help Ten Hag’s side continue their run of form, which sees them sit fourth in the Premier League on 39 points, level with Newcastle and six points behind runners-up Manchester City.

The 28-year-old playmaker will join his sixth club in his career, having had spells with Admira, Rapid Wien, Salzburg, Leipzig and Bayern Munich. Sabitzer has been capped by Austria and has made 581 official appearances in his playing career, scoring 140 goals and providing 76 assists.

2022 CHAN: Black Galaxies exit due to lack of investment – Coach JE Sarpong

Veteran coach, Josef Emmanuel Sarpong has attributed the Black Galaxies’ exit from the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) to poor facilities in the country.

Ghana exited the tournament in the quarterfinals after a 2-0 defeat against Niger over the weekend.

According to the former Great Olympics coach, a conscious sports infrastructure development will transform the local league and also enable local players to match their peers in international tournaments.

He added that until those placed in responsible positions to manage football embarked on a strategic investment to improve sports facilities, Ghana would continue to perform abysmally at international tournaments.

“We need to improve the structures of our local league, make it competitive for our home-based players to see the need to improve so their confidence level could be raised for international competitions,” he told Graphic Sports.

“It was an awful performance with defensive lapses. The defence was disjointed and the midfield struggled to string their passes together.

For the attack, they were simply non-existent as there was not a single shot on target in the first half when they were down by a goal.

“The players didn’t play maturely when they were down. They panicked and seemed to be mentally off-balanced. In a bid to raise their game, they failed to swing passes together for the equaliser. This was because the midfield and attack didn’t click so they didn’t pose any threat to the Nigerien goal area,” he observed.

Meanwhile, the playing body have arrived in the country. The team were awarded $400,000 for playing at the quarterfinals.

  • Osofo Kyiri Abosom has children with 2 of our housemaids he secretly married – Wife reveals

Osofo Kyiri Abosom has children with 2 of our housemaids he secretly married – Wife reveals

Princess Andrews, wife of popular Ghanaian preacher Kwabena Andrews, better known as Osofo Kyiri Abosom, has shared her side of the story involving her separation from her husband.

In her revelation, Kyiri Abosom’s affair with two of their housemaids whom he secretly married at her blindside has brought chaos to their home.

“My husband has fathered a child with none other than two of my maids. He secretly married both of them on the same day. I had no idea what my husband had done. Both women went through IVF. He did it for both of our housemaids,” she disclosed in an interview on GHPage.

The preacher took many by surprise when he publicly announced that he had divorced his wife, with whom he shares two children.

He confessed to fathering a child outside of his marriage and also levelled some allegations against his wife.

“I, Kyiri Abosom have had a child outside our marriage. You should see the child. She is so beautiful, I will soon outdoor her. My partner sent the matter to court and fought for my property. She has sent the matter to different courts…I want you to tell her that our marriage is over…when I was called into the ministry, she wasn’t in the picture. She is free to go…there are a lot of beautiful women out there, and when I need them, I will call for help,” he announced.

But sharing her story, Princess, who is a gospel singer, expressed disappointment in her husband and his chronic attitude of sleeping with any woman he comes across, including their house helps.

“There’s been separation for the past year; I won’t call it divorce. We have three children; the firstborn was adopted, and the twins are ours. We have a tall list of issues, but since the matter is in court, I don’t want to grant interviews,” she added.
