Minority leadership reshuffle: Issue too delicate for Mahama to intervene – Lecturer

A parliamentary affairs expert, Prof Kwabena Sarfo Sarfo-Kantanka, says the current reshuffle in the leadership of the Minority is a critical issue that must be tackled with caution.

Prof Sarfo-Kantanka advised against the intervention of former President John Mahama due to the delicate nature of the situation.

Many have called on the former President to, as he has done in the past, take action in the matter which has divided the NDC MPs.https://www.youtube.com/embed/MtPqBcWU0EM

But speaking on JoyNews, the Dean of the University of Cape Coast’s Faculty of Arts insists that such an intervention may send the wrong signal to the already disgruntled membership.

“It will be a very delicate issue because if he [John Mahama] intervenes, what does it mean? Because already, people have raised concerns, I don’t know whether they are true or not, that people are talking about those who do not support former president Mahama’s bid to become the standard bearer of the party in the 2024 elections are always being targeted,” the Associate Professor made this statement on the AM Show on Friday.

“… So if he comes in, what will be the implication?” he asked.

Prof Sarfo-Kantankah further advised that the party leadership identifies the aggrieved groups and engages in meaningful dialogue to resolve any existing internal conflicts.

In his opinion, that is the key and only way the party can move forward.

“For me, instead of him intervening as an individual, I would prefer that the leadership of the party will identify the various interest groups…meet with them, have serious discussions with them and discuss the way forward. I think it can be easily resolved.

“And then those who are concerned like Muntaka, Haruna, and the other two members who have been removed from the leadership positions, I think that that kind of discussion is what is most important. That is the key thing,” the Dean noted.

  • Reduce government by canceling pointless initiatives -Togbe Afede XIV

Reduce government by canceling pointless initiatives -Togbe Afede XIV

Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, has stated that before shifting the burden of the current economic crisis onto specific bondholders through a haircut in the domestic debt exchange program, the government of Ghana should first look at reducing its expenditure and closing financial gaps to save the country money.

When the Individual Bondholders Forum paid him a courtesy call on January 26, 2023, to mobilize opposition to the government including individual bondholders in the debt exchange program, Togbe Afede made the recommendation.

The Forum, led by Mr. Senyo Hosi, has tabled some proposals before the government through which the country could save GHS83.5 billion.

Togbe Afede believes the government must first clean house before touching any individual’s bond proceeds.

“What expenditures can we cut out? Maybe, new and not-very-essential capital projects. What can we suspend? Ongoing, maybe unnecessary capital projects”, the traditional leader noted, as well as turning attention to the “size of government, payments to individuals, ex gratia, all kinds of allowances, monies that we spend on travels, et cetera”.

“There is so much room, I believe, for cutting expenditure,”  he stressed, adding: “And that is where, I think, we should be looking at first of all.”

“If one goes by the estimates that have been put out there with regard to how much the nation loses to corruption annually, it suggests that there is room for trimming down government expenditure,”  Togbe Afede stressed.

Mr. Hosi, during the call, told the chief: “Togbe, the matter is an eye-red matter, and, for someone who has led the capital market and being one of the players who birthed the capital market—besides your royal place as the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State—you are a pioneer in this industry.”

“I do not want to believe this is your voice and the destination you assured us when your voice was heard back then,”  Mr. Hosi noted.

“So, we are here to petition your office, to petition you, as an individual, and the state of Asogli, not to sit by and watch the lives of 6.5 million people devastated and subjected to shackles of poverty.”

“So, our plea here is very simple: the steps being taken by the government are unsustainable and very unnecessary.”

The Forum’s proposed money-saving measures include enforcing property taxation and VAT invigilation; recovering funds lost to financial irregularities as identified by the Auditor-General, divesting loss-making, defunct, and troubled 17 state-owned enterprises, privatising selected SOEs to Tier-2 pension funds to drive efficiency and productivity, and reviewing the Free SHS Programme to make it more efficient through effective targeting and allowing parents who can pay to do so, among others.

“The measures proposed above, per the estimation of the IBF, yield net savings of GHC83.5bn”, the IBF said in its report, adding: “The above recommendations are competent enough to urgently address the fiscal challenges and enable us to reach the desired 55% debt-to-GDP target proposed to the IMF.”

  • Lands Minister urges prudent development of mineral resources

Lands Minister urges prudent development of mineral resources

The necessity of ensuring ethical exploitation of the nation’s mineral resources has been reemphasized by Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Samuel Abu Jinapor.

Speaking at the Bongo-Soe Community Mining Scheme (CMS) opening in the Upper East Region, the minister noted that using natural resources cannot be done in a way that harms the environment.
He argues that this is especially important at a time when the government is still cracking down on illegal mining operations and legalizing the small-scale mining sector.

Following the CMS launch, over 3,000 residents are expected to find employment.

He was upbeat that operations of the Bongo-Soe Community Mining Scheme will help boost economic activities and provide direct and indirect jobs to the people of Bongo and its environs.

Mr. Jinapor noted that the northern part of the country is blessed with rich mineral deposits, citing the operations of mining companies such as Cardinal Namdini Resources and Perseus Mining, among others.

While mistakes of the past are being corrected through responsible and sustainable mining, he said, government will continue to revamp the sector by raising local giants in the small-scale mining industry.

Against this background, he said the Community Mining Scheme is an ideal way of achieving this vision. The CMS, he said, will create employment in the area and improve the people’s livelihoods.

The minister however cautioned that all guidelines and requirements in the Community Mining Scheme should be religiously adhered to, adding government will not hesitate to revoke the licence of operators found going contrary to measures stipulated in the manual.

He therefore urged the Scheme’s management to work effectively with stakeholders in the area, including local authorities and traditional leaders, to ensure a mutually beneficial relationship.

For his part, the Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, assured that they will implement all measures contained in the CMS manual. He also encouraged the residents’ commitment to the project so it can succeed.

The Paramount Chief of Bongo Traditional Area, Naba Baba Salifu Atamaale, is optimistic that the mine will provide much-needed employment in the area. He also added that mining should be done within the confines of the law.

Liverpool teenager Bajcetic signs new long-term contract

Liverpool‘s teenager midfielder Stefan Bajcetic has signed a new long-term contract with the club.

The 18-year-old arrived from Celta Vigo in late 2020 and has worked his way through to the first-team picture at Anfield.

Having trained with the senior team ahead of the 2022-23 season, Bajcetic has 10 appearances to his name this term.

His breakthrough performances have seen him earn a fresh deal with Jurgen Klopp’s men, and Bajcetic acknowledges he is enjoying a campaign that has outperformed his expectations.

“It’s crazy [how quickly things have happened],” he told the club’s official website. “A year ago I was playing Under-18s football, and now I’ve started some games [and] made my debut.

“[I have] even scored a goal. That was something I never expected to happen this year. It’s amazing to see how fast it went.

Bajcetic made his senior debut in late August during the Reds’ 9-0 rout over Bournemouth in the Premier League.

He has gone on to make several more appearances in the top flight for Liverpool, while he was also a goalscorer in their Boxing Day win over Aston Villa.

His renewal marks the latest piece of business for Klopp’s side, who signed Cody Gakpo from PSV in their only major transfer of the mid-season window.

Liverpool will be in FA Cup action this weekend with a fourth-round trip to Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.

  • US$562 billion needed to reach net zero emissions

US$562 billion needed to reach net zero emissions

The country requires over US$ 562 billion to achieve its net zero carbon emission target by 2070, Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, Oscar Amonoo-Neizer, has said.

The Energy Commission Chief said the programme was initiated in 2020 and is a long-term framework with an estimated 200 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide target throughout the 50-year period.

“Looking at the amount of money needed, the carbon market implementation will help to alleviate some of the financial burdens to accelerate getting to the goal. This is the same in most African countries,” he said.

Mr. Amonoo-Neizer was addressing colleague industry players at PwC West Africa’s Climate Change & Sustainability webinar, themed ‘Post-COP27: Outcomes and next steps’.

He however explained that fossil fuels, especially natural gas, will continue to be part of Ghana’s energy mix in the short-term, adding: “Energy transition could come with challenges, including lower demand in the downstream petroleum sector.

“It is important for the African continent to focus on innovation and diversification to thrive and mitigate the impact of transition,” he added.

Dr. Muntaqa Umar-Sadiq, Head-Nigeria Energy Transition Office, explained that his country is pitching for an initial US$10billion from international funders to kick-start an energy transition plan.

According to him, Nigeria aims to put itself on a path to achieve net zero emissions by 2060 with an array of strategies including reliance on gas as transitional fuel.

Dr. Mutanga said a price-tag of US$410billion has been estimated for key strategies to enable Nigeria – a far bigger economy than Ghana – reach net zero by 2060.

Net zero refers to the balance between amount of greenhouse gas produced and that removed from the atmosphere. Net zero is reached when the amount of carbon added is no more than the amount taken away.

    Background

At the 27th Conference of Parties (COP27), which was held in November 2022 in Egypt, several commitments were made to accelerate corporate and country actions for climate change. The PwC webinar, therefore, brought stakeholders from Nigeria and Ghana to engage around the key takeaways from COP27.

These included implications of COP27’s commitments and expectations from the public and private sectors in achieving the climate change agenda, especially over the next 12 months.

Other key speakers at the webinar included Dr. Daniel Tutu Benefoh, Ag. Director-Climate Change Unit, Environmental Protection Agency, Ghana; Dr. Ndidi Nnoli-Edozien, Member-International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB); Dr. Salisu Mohammed Dahiru, Director-General/Chief Executive Officer, Nigeria’s National Council on Climate Change (NCCC); and Muhammad Wakil, CFA, Country Representative-Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), Nigeria.

  • Real Madrid 3-1 Atletico Madrid (aet): Superb Rodrygo goal sparks Copa del Rey turnaround

Real Madrid 3-1 Atletico Madrid (aet): Superb Rodrygo goal sparks Copa del Rey turnaround

Real Madrid needed extra-time to seal a dramatic Copa del Rey comeback as they downed rivals Atletico Madrid with a 3-1 quarter-final victory on Thursday.

Los Blancos were heading out at the Santiago Bernabeu after their former striker Alvaro Morata had struck in the first half for Atletico.

But Rodrygo’s fantastic solo effort forced an extra half-hour in the Spanish capital, before Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior completed the turnaround for the hosts.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side join Barcelona, Athletic Bilbao and Osasuna in the semi-finals, but Diego Simeone’s visitors will rue missing out on the last four.

Despite an early command of the game, it was the hosts who went behind in the 19th minute when Morata tapped in Nahuel Molina’s square ball from close-range.

Madrid blew a big chance to level matters on the half-hour mark when Eder Militao was caught off-guard by a free-kick delivery and botched a simple header.

Matters went from bad to worse for Ancelotti’s side too after they were forced into a substitution before the break thanks to an injury to Ferland Mendy.

Los Blancos were forced to wait for much of the game to find their response, but their patience paid off in the 79th minute when Rodrygo skipped past four Atletico players before prodding past Jan Oblak at his near post.

Tempers started to fray between both rivals in extra-time, with Stefan Savic dismissed in the 99th minute after two yellow cards in quick succession.

Gifted a man advantage, Madrid seized the chance with Benzema able to guide Vinicius’ rushed effort in past Oblak, before the Brazilian signed off the game with a finish of his own, tucked away after a fine run in off the left wing.

What does it mean? Madrid rally with response

Edged for composure and nous in the first half, Los Blancos looked more energetic than assured after the interval, before Rodrygo managed to bring them back in.

But following Supercopa de Espana heartbreak against Barcelona earlier this month, Ancelotti will be delighted to see his side prove they can still thrive in the pressure situations.

    Vinicius offers defiant response

Much of the build-up to Thursday’s match was dominated by the Brazilian after clubs strongly condemned the actions of individuals who hung an effigy of the winger from a bridge.

Though a little nervous throughout the game, he earned his reward right at the end, and drew the biggest roar of the night.

    Passive performance pushes Atletico out

Having taken a lead into the half-time break, it was always likely Simeone’s side would sit back and attempt to frustrate their rivals following the interval.

With only 30 per cent of possession in the second 45 however, they allowed themselves to be pushed off the park in the end, and paid the price in extra-time.

    Key Opta facts

    – Diego Simeone has faced Real Madrid for the sixth time as Atletico boss in a cup game, all of which have gone to extra-time (also Copa del Rey 2013, Champions League 2014 and 2016, UEFA Super Cup 2018 and Supercopa de Espana 2020).

    – Molina’s assist for Morata meant he has provided one in his last three games, having not registered one in any of his first 21 games for Atletico in all competitions.

    – Savic has been sent off in two of his last three games, as many as in his previous 137 games in all competitions for his club.

    – 12 out of 27 goals Rodrygo has scored for Madrid have been in the last 20 minutes of games (44.4 per cent). The Brazilian has scored nine goals this season, equalling his highest tally in a single campaign for Los Blancos (2021-22).

    – 17 out of the 37 assists from Vinicius for Madrid have been for Karim Benzema (46 per cent). Only Cristiano Ronaldo (27), Gareth Bale and Luka Modric (18 each) have provided more assists to Benzema than the Brazilian.

    What’s next?

Both teams are in LaLiga action on Sunday, with Real Madrid hosting Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid visiting Osasuna.

FLASHBACK: Government will do it again if needed with same approach – Ofori-Atta on banking clean-up

Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta in 2020 said government would not hesitate to embark on another clean-up exercise if the banking sector faces any new challenges.

According to him, when a country’s financial sector is weak, it will have dire consequences on the economy and its people.

The Bank of Ghana swept through the financial sector of the economy between 2017 and 2019 after some banks and financial institutions could not meet their minimum capital requirement.

Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta has said the government will not hesitate to step in to tackle any challenge that may rear its head in the banking sector that can lead to an economic downturn again.

He told TV3’s Etornam Sey in an exclusive interview on Monday, October 26, 2020, that the financial sector is the heartbeat of every economy globally.

A weak financial sector, he said, will have dire consequences for the economy and its people, a situation that demands that central authorities step in swiftly to address.

Therefore, he said, the Government of Ghana will act quickly to address any challenges that may emerge in the sector again after the recent clean-up exercise.

The Bank Ghana with support from the Finance Ministry swept through the financial sector of the economy between the period 2017 and 2019.

The central bank first started by revising the minimum paid-up capital for existing banks and new entrants from GH¢120 million to GH¢400 million.

According to the regulator, this was to test the viability of the banks.

The banks that were unable to meet this new requirement were either merged or collapsed.

Following this action, some nine local banks, 23 savings & loans companies, 347 microfinance institutions, 39 finance houses and 53 fund management companies closed down during the exercise.

In total, the government spent GH¢23billion to undertake this exercise

UniBank, The Sovereign Bank, The Beige Bank, Premium Bank, The Royal Bank, Heritage Bank, Construction Bank, UT Bank, Capital Bank all collapsed.

Mr Ofori-Atta said “Once you have the problem, you have to solve it because the financial architecture is the (basis) for any development.

“So whether we like or not we had to do that. Now that we have done that we move ahead.”

Asked whether if the situation presents itself the government will do it again in the same manner, he answered “You meet problems as a government that is what they elected you for and so you solve it.

“And then you begin by commissioning this to give people the sense of hope for the future to say this thing can be done, and they have faith in you so lets us go with them.

“If the engine is not functioning you can’t build on top of that so you had to solve the problem.

“Is there a way you improve on what you are doing? Of course yes there is always a way to do that but fundamentally was the approach necessary, no question about that.”

AJ Poundz recounts how Felicia Osei took over her job at Onua FM

Media presenter cum socialite, AJ Poundz, has disclosed how she and Felicia Osei were paired as co-hosts of Onua’s Mid-Morning Show, but later found out that the TikTok star was going to take over interestingly.

In an interview with Zionfelix, AJ Poundz, who appears pained about the development, said everyone at the media house, except her, knew that Felicia was replacing her for good, as her flyers were all over.

This was after she (AJ Poundz) was asked to train Felicia, who joined the company as a novice.

AJ Poundz said it was after the rumours went wild that management called to inform her of the change.

She said management showed her new flyers projecting Felicia as the only host of the program after they (Felicia and AJ Poundz) had earlier ones with their faces on them.

“I was there when they brought Felicia Osei to me and I was asked to train her so she could be my co-host on the Mid-Morning show. Mid-morning shows are done at peak times and for a lady to moderate such shows, its no joke. I did Mid-morning for two years and Felicia is my young sister so I did not mind training her.

“After a week, I started hearing rumours all around that there are flyers out there, depicting that she is going to be the sole host of the show. Prior to this, there were flyers with both of us on it and I don’t know what changed. They then brought the flyers to me that she is taking over and what can I say? I was then told to take over Aben Waha and Girls Kasa on TV. As for the radio, I was told that they will discuss with me later.”

It can be recalled that after Felicia Osei signed her contract with Media General, she was asked during an interview on Showbiz 360 what exactly her roles were, and the Tik Tok star said she had no idea.

Lyon president vows Gusto will stay despite Chelsea interest

Malo Gusto will remain at Lyon despite interest from Chelsea, with club president Jean-Michel Aulas claiming the right-back will stay in Ligue 1.

The youngster has been linked with a switch to the Premier League heavyweights, who have presided over a high-spending January transfer window.

France youth international Gusto is the latest to be touted for a move, and has reportedly already agreed personal terms on a six-and-a-half-year deal.

But reports also said Lyon knocked back a £17.6million offer from the Blues on Wednesday and Aulas has claimed the 19-year-old will not be going anywhere this month.

“I have the pleasure to explain that Malo Gusto, one of Lyon’s big talents, will continue to play for Lyon until at least June 30,” he wrote on Twitter.

Gusto is out of contract at the end of next season with the Ligue 1 outfit, who currently ninth with just one win from their last five top-flight matches.

The club reportedly value him closer to £35m (€40m) and may well be playing hardball in order to convince Chelsea to either up their offer or wait for the end of the campaign.

With 47 appearances for his hometown club, Gusto is already knocking at the door of the France senior team under Didier Deschamps.

If he was to move to Chelsea, he would become their seventh arrival of the transfer window, and second from Ligue 1 after Monaco defender Benoit Badiashile.

David Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos, Mykhaylo Mudryk and Noni Madueke are the other permanent arrivals at Stamford Bridge, while Joao Felix also joined on loan from Atletico Madrid.

  • Benzema relieved for extra-time success in Copa del Rey

Benzema relieved for extra-time success in Copa del Rey

Karim Benzema suggests Real Madrid must find earlier goals in games if they do not wish to suffer after their 3-1 Copa del Rey comeback against Atletico Madrid.

Los Blancos failed to find the net until the final quarter-hour of regular time at the Santiago Bernabeu, when Rodrygo cancelled out Alvaro Morata’s opener.

His superb solo finish forced extra-time in Thursday’s quarter-final tie, with further goals for Benzema and Vinicius Junior cementing the turnaround for the hosts.

The reigning winner of the Ballon d’Or acknowledged his side made themselves work for their spot in the last four with their performance at points, but stresses they always had the quality to respond.

“It was a very difficult and complicated game,” the France international reflected afterwards. “But with the players and talent we have, we knew we could make a comeback of it.

“Perhaps we need to score goals sooner, because we don’t like to suffer. Atletico positioned themselves well, got in behind, and that cost us. Rodrygo’s response was a great goal.”

For Vinicius, his goal ensured a bright finish to a difficult day in which an effigy of the Brazilian winger was hung from a bridge near Madrid’s training ground ahead of the derby.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti praised the 22-year-old in his post-match comments, adding there was never any doubt he would miss the match despite the incident.

“Vinicius has always wanted to play and was very focused on the game,” he said. “He played a great game. What happened elsewhere today has been very regrettable.”

  • Australian Open: Tsitsipas always felt he had the ego to compete for slams

Australian Open: Tsitsipas always felt he had the ego to compete for slams

Stefanos Tsitsipas always felt he had the “ego” to be challenging for grand slams and the world number one ranking after booking his spot in the Australian Open final.

The Greek defeated Karen Khachanov 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 on Rod Laver Arena and will now face either nine-time Melbourne champion Novak Djokovic or Tommy Paul in Sunday’s showpiece.

It marks Tsitsipas’ second run to a slam final after he was beaten by Djokovic at the French Open in 2021, a match in which he surrendered a two-set lead.

Victory would not only see him win a maiden slam but take ownership of the men’s world number one ranking, two ambitions Tsitsipas always believed he could achieve.

“I remember watching it on TV saying to myself, ‘I want to be there one day myself. I want to recreate that feeling for me’,” he said.

“I knew that’s a very long journey to get there. There are certain steps you have to take to give yourself the chance to be competing for something like this.

“But I very much believed it. First of all, it’s your ego that speaks. You either have it or not. As a kid, I was very confident.

“Thank God I was good in my country. Starting from that, I knew if I’m able to get out of my country and compete in other countries, European leagues, European tours, I proved myself over and over again that I’m actually good.

“I did finish as a junior number one. Now I want to do it in the men’s side, in the men’s professional tennis.”

Asked what had changed since losing to Djokovic in the final at Roland Garros almost two years ago, Tsitsipas said: “I’m playing great tennis. I’m enjoying myself. I just see no downside or negativity in what I’m trying to do out there. Even if it doesn’t work, I’m very optimistic and positive about any outcome, any opponent that I have to face.

“This is something that has been sort of lacking in my game. I genuinely believe in what I’m able to produce. That is more than enough. I go about this way. I strive for it every single day. It might not go the way I want it to, but I put 110 per cent out there.”

Khachanov has enjoyed back-to-back slam semi-finals having also made the last four at last year’s US Open.

The 26-year-old retains belief that he can beyond the semis at future slams.

“Maybe in some situations I could do better. It’s always like this. Tennis is always, like any other sport, there is no draw unfortunately in our sport. One guy has to win and to go through,” he said.

“I would say I did it second time in a row, consecutive semi-finals. I would definitely go with my head high. Again, rest a couple of days, think with my team for next schedule, again to have a team meeting to discuss those particular situations and moments on what we need to work.

“Hopefully I keep believing that I can pass this step next time, if I am in this situation, hopefully. That’s it.”

  • Morocco scores major points in bid to host 2025 AFCON

Morocco scores major points in bid to host 2025 AFCON

Morocco keeps scoring major points in its bid to host the 2025 AFCON finals after the country passed strict FIFA prerequisite criteria for the organisation of an expanded new-look FIFA World Cup.

On Wednesday, the North African country became the only country to successfully get the greenlight in the strict FIFA prerequisite criteria specifications on sports, hotel, health and infrastructures that make a country eligible to organise the FIFA World Cup under its new format of an increase from 32 to 48 teams.

This is not the first time Morocco gets the thumbs up after a Task Force composed of dozens of experts travelled throughout Morocco for several months in 2018 before awarding an above-average score that made the Kingdom’s bid eligible for the 2026 World Cup.

The news comes just days after George Weah led loud calls from African legends for Morocco to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

The 1995 Ballon d’Or winner, who remains the only African ever to be crowned the best player in the world, is a big admirer of Morocco’s massive investment in football.

“Liberia fully endorses and supports Morocco’s bid to host Afcon 2025. I have made this commitment to King Mohamed VI. It is cast in stone,” Weah said in a statement released by the Presidency.

The 56-year-old, whose 18-year glittering career took him to top European clubs, including Monaco, AC Milan and Chelsea, said Morocco was a shining example on and off the field.

The North African country has one of the best football infrastructures in Africa.

Stadiums selected to bolster its bid have been approved by FIFA [as part of the bid for the 2026 World Cup] and CAF as part of the qualifications for the FIFA World Cup and the AFCON.

The Kingdom also has the Mohammed VI Football Complex, one of the best national football centres in the world.

On the field of play, in the 2019/20 season, four of the eight semi-finalists of the Champions League and Confederations Cup have been from Morroco’s Botola Pro league. Last year, Moroccan clubs won all the CAF competitions.

Wydad Athletic Club and RS Berkane are the reigning CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup champions, while AS Far won the women’s Champions League.

Morocco became the first African country to reach the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Their women’s national team finished as runners-up to Banyana Banyana at the Africa Cup of Nations last year.

Off the field, Morocco, like Weah, recently won praise from legendary former Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane for their football development.

“I don’t know how long it is going to take us, South Africa, to get to where Morocco is in terms of infrastructure and facilities to develop coaches and programmes to develop players,” said Mosimane.

Former Indomitable Lions international Antoine Bell concurs with Mosimane and Weah that Morocco should host not only AFCON but the World Cup in 2030.

He went further and called for South Africa to support Morocco’s bid to bring the World Cup to Africa again.

“South Africa showed the way, and I am confident Morocco will follow suit. The country has international standards, from stadiums to top infrastructure. Morocco can compete with the best in the world,” he said.

“When South Africa talks on the continent, the rest of the continent listens; hence South Africa needs to support Morocco. South Africa has the experience, and Morocco will use this experience to win the 2026 bid,” added Bell.

Surprisingly, despite this success on and off the field, Morocco has yet to host an African Cup of Nations since 1988.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has won his second successive African Footballer of the Year award after another incredible 12 months.

“This award is very big for me, I love it because I saw it when I was young and I always had a dream to win it one day,” Salah said.

“I’m proud to win it twice, I must thank my family and my teammates, and I dedicate this award to my country, Egypt.”

The forward also won the FIFA Puskás Award in 2018 for his stunning solo effort against Everton.

And the 26-year-old has been finding the net once again this season.

Salah’s award capped off a perfect day for Egyptian football after the country was announced as hosts of this summer’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Egypt have won the competition on seven occasions, including three straight championships between 2006-2010, and beat South Africa to the honour of hosting the tournament this year.

Ahmed Shobair, vice-president of Egypt’s FA, said: “The fans will be back again in the stadiums, which will be full in the tournament I promise.”

Not everything is based on luck – Camidoh speaks about making ‘Sugarcane’ a hit

Afro-pop artiste Camidoh says his song Sugarcane did not become a hit by chance.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Qwame Larbi on Daybreak Hitz, the young singer revealed that he heavily invested in the song to make it a hit.

According to him, marketing is one aspect that most artists don’t put a lot of effort into in music production.

He is, therefore, advising his colleagues to be more intentional about music marketing.

“Not everything is based on luck let no one tell you that it’s not your time to blow. Marketing is the god of all. We need to be intentional about this.”

Camidoh’s Sugarcane remix became a monster hit in 2022. The song peaked at number one on various music charts.

Speaking in the interview, Camidoh stressed that he has come to understand that marketing is a major tool to get one’s songs to reach a very high level.

“I decided that because Sugarcane is a beautiful record, therefore, I chose to invest and promote it on various platforms. I paid for the job to be done.”

He added that one of the reasons why Nigerian music is thriving and going global is because they have understood the art of marketing their music to reach people globally.

“Sometimes it’s not about the product quality but it’s about intentionally marketing products from this country.”

After a very fruitful 2022, Camidoh has dropped his much anticipated EP dubbed; ‘A Lifetime is Not Enough’.

The project is made up of 6 songs and features artists like Cina Soul. The project is out on all digital stores.

Suspected food poisoning: Waakye kills 5 including pregnant woman

About five people have met their untimely death, after eating a meal of rice and beans, popularly known as waakye, they bought from a food joint at Oyibi Bush Canteen Junction, in Accra.

About 40 people were reportedly affected, out of which five, including a pregnant woman and a lotto vendor, died.

The victims including the waakye seller, popularly known as Yellow Sisi, and some of her family members were rushed to the Valley View Hospital, Oyibi Hospital, Dodowa Hospital and other facilities when they complained of severe stomach aches after they had eaten the food last week Friday.

The Yellow Sisi Waakye joint is considered to be one of the popular food joints at Oyibi Bush Canteen.

    Food joint

When the Daily Graphic team visited the area, it observed that the joint was quiet and the kiosk locked.

Some shops close to the food joint were also closed as it is believed that the shop owners who also patronised the food that day and suffered the side effects, were also said to be receiving treatment in a hospital.

    Confirmation, investigation

When the Daily Graphic followed up at the Valley View Hospital for confirmation, hospital officials did confirm the incident, indicating that a number of patients were rushed to the hospital in bad condition but “as of today, all the patients have been discharged,+” an official said.

    The Valley View

Hospital officials could not provide enough information as to the number of people who might have been affected but only indicated that the data from the hospital had been forwarded to the Kpone Katamanso District Hospital where further investigation was ongoing to ascertain the cause of the problem.

Officials at the district hospital confirmed the story but said they were conducting further tests on patients to find out whether it was indeed a case of food poisoning or something else.

“As at now, some other people are still visiting the hospital and, therefore, until all the necessary laboratory tests are complete, we cannot give specific data on the number of people who have been affected or whether it was indeed a case of food poisoning,” Dr Esther Danquah from the district hospital said.

    Victims’ narration

One of the victims who gave his name as Justice Ankomah said he started experiencing stomach ache and then diarrhoea later in the day, but did not consider it as a “big deal” and took some medication to treat himself.

However, he pointed out that three other residents who operated shops around the joint and also patronised the waakye, as they often did, fell very sick and ended up being admitted to the hospital and had not been able to return to open their shops for business since last Friday.

The wife of one of the deceased that the Daily Graphic met and only gave her husband’s name as Kennedy, disclosed that her husband died last Monday at the St John’s Hospital at Amrahia, when he was rushed there after complaining of stomach ache and diarrhoea.

“He started complaining that Friday that he was not feeling well, but we thought it was a normal thing. It was later when it became severe that we rushed him to the hospital but he did not survive,” the widow disclosed.

She said later on they heard the news that many other people had been affected and were at different hospitals within the community.

Some relatives of Kennedy were spotted at the Oyibi Police Station following up on the issue.

They, however, refused to talk to the Daily Graphic about the incident as they said the police were investigating.

At the Oyibi Police Station, although there was confirmation that a case of food poisoning had been reported there, the police declined to brief the Daily Graphic team but rather, directed them to seek further information from the police headquarters.

  • Five new toilet roll factories created – Bawumia

Five new toilet roll factories created – Bawumia

Five new toilet paper mills were opened in the nation, according to vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2019 announcement.

He further stated that the new factories are part of the government’s 1 District, 1 Factory strategy.

On September 26, 2019, Dr. Bawumia made these remarks while seeing the Nsawam Prisons facility where the Brompton Portfolio makes toilet paper.

Read the entire article as it appeared in its original form on September 27, 2019 on Laudbusiness.

According to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawmuia, Ghana can today brag of having fourteen (14) indigenous toilet roll manufacturing businesses operating there.

He explained that when the Akufo-Addo administration came into office, there were nine of the companies already existing, but under the One District One Factory Programme, five new additions have been made.

He said these when he toured the Brompton Portfolio’s toilet paper manufacturing factory located at the Nsawam Prisons in the Eastern Region on Thursday, 26th September 2019.

Addressing the media, Vice President Bawumia indicated that the One District One Factory (1D1F) initiative was launched as one of the pillars for President Nana Akufo-Addo’s industrialisation agenda.

“We know that in this country we have a huge dependence on imports and so the import bill tends to be very high and we rather export a lot of our primary commodities. The vision of the President is for us to move away from the export of the primary commodities to the manufacturing of these commodities, and this is the background for the One District One Factory initiative. And once we do that we are able to save on scarce foreign exchange, we are able to grow local industries and we’re able to create jobs. These really are three critical advantages of one District one factory,” he said.

He added: “One of the achievements in this particular one District one factory initiative is in the area of the manufacture of toilet rolls in Ghana.

“When we came into office there were nine companies existing which dealt with toilet roll manufacturing. Since then in the last two-and-a-half years we’ve added five additional factories. So Ghana’s capacity to produce toilet rolls has increased generally by about 50% which is very significant.

“Given the success of One District One Factory, Government as we stated in our manifesto, is going to use the power of its procurement to support local industries, and it is for this reason you would have heard yesterday that I announced that Cocoa Board and for that matter the Ministry for Agriculture will have to now purchase locally manufactured fertilizer because we have the factories now under 1D1F to produce that fertilizer.

“We don’t have to import it anymore, so the Ministry of Agriculture and Cocoa Board will now have to use all the government procurement of fertilizer, source it locally.

“We are also saying if you look at the 14 manufacturers of toilet roll that we have in Ghana, 1D1F has brought five, we had an existing 9 already, and the capacity of that 14 is able to meet most of our demand for toilet rolls in Ghana, so why import?

“So we are saying from the next procurement cycle, all government institutions – whether it’s the military or the police or the hospitals or the schools, because the taxpayer funds all government institutions – if you’re going to buy toilet roll, all that toilet roll must be bought from local manufacturing companies. So we are using the taxpayer’s money to support our local industries. This will create jobs, will save foreign exchange, will grow the economy and this is the vision of One District One Factory.”

The Vice President continued, “This is the policy going forward. We are going to use our taxpayers’ money to support local manufacturing companies in the context of 1D1F. This is not a new policy, it is something that we had in our manifesto before we came into office but now we have built sufficient capacity in certain areas and therefore we can actualize that particular policy.

“The future is very bright by the grace of God. If we continue to pursue the policies and the vision of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the One District One Factory will become a reality.”

Veteran football administrator, Jonathan Abbey Pobi has questioned Kwesi Appiah‘s decision to apply for the vacant Black Stars job.

Appiah has confirmed that he has applied for the job having had two stints with the team.

The 62-year-old led the team to the 2014 World Cup and the 2019 African Cup of Nations [AFCON] in Egypt.

However, the Ghana Football Association [GFA] parted ways with Kwesi Appiah following the expiration of his contract.

According to Abbey Pobi, the factors that hindered the 62-year-old’s stints in charge of the senior national team still exist.

“Those people who were not giving him chance to do his work. These people where are they? Are they not in existence?

“So, why is Kwesi Appiah coming back?” he added.

Develop innovations to generate more revenue – John Kumah charges GRA

Deputy Minister for Finance, Dr. John Ampontuah Kumah has charged the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to find innovative ways to improve revenue mobilization to develop the country.

According to him, the 2023 revenue target for the Authority however is GHC105,998.73 billion, where about GHC54 billion lower than what we are ‘supposed’ to be targeting, hence the need to work hard to get more revenue.

The Deputy Minister, also Member of Parliament for Ejisu said this when speaking at the 2023 World Customs organization celebration held in Accra under the theme “Nurturing the Next Generation: promoting a Culture of Knowledge-sharing and Professional Pride in Customs”.

Speaking further, he noted that the GRA collected total tax revenue of GH¢75,544.05M for the year 2022 as against a target of GH¢71,948.76M, exceeding the target by GH¢3,595.29M, adding that this performance represents a nominal growth rate of 31.5% over that of 2021.

He said the Customs revenue grew by a nominal growth rate of 38.4% with the collection of GH¢22,258.02M as against a target of GH¢20,202.32.

He use the forum to congratulate the Authority for their achievement and also urged them to plan and strategize well to get more revenue.

“In as much as we jubilate over your achievement, the country revenue as a ratio of GDP is just around 14%, one of the lowest in the sub-region. We seek to achieve more, at least a 20%. With our current GDP of around GHC800 billion, this supposes we should be targeting mobilizing GHC160 billion”.

He explained that “the right policies and strategies must be employed to ensure that come next year, we will have a cause to gather again to celebrate a job well done. Revenue is key, and improving its mobilization efficiency is very important for our development”.

“Ease in information sharing would help improve efficiency in work done. For instance, open working relationship shipshinfo and rmation sharing between the Ports Authority and the Customs Division can help improve remarkably revenue mobilization and security of the state”.

“It is worth noting that the Customs Division goes beyond just revenue mobilization but providing security of our borders from illegal entry of arms and drugs considering the terrorism threat in West Africa. Not only is our money in your hands, but our security”.

Dr. Kumah added that in this era of advanced technology, the theme is indeed very apt knowing that technology can provide vast opportunities to help promote a culture of knowledge sharing and also help increase voluntary compliance.

I do not doubt in my mind that the adoption of this culture of knowledge sharing and the use of appropriate technology will bring enormous benefits to GRA and our country.

“I will therefore urge customs administrators to strengthen trust with stakeholders, hence further motivating and cultivating the sense of belonging at work. A positive image of an organization depends largely on its employees. We are poised to empower and protect all our initiatives towards revenue mobilization, and we expect that you continue to be dedicated and work as a team to deliver results”.

He noted that “The 2023 journey has begun and I believe we are all aware of the challenges confronting us as a nation, especially with regards to our ability to raise adequate funding for our developmental course and economic transformation. The Ghana Revenue Authority’s contribution in navigating us out of the current economic situation cannot be overemphasized”.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said that his administration is determined to save lives, jobs, and livelihoods as well as revitalize the economy, and safeguard the future of our country in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on the economy.

Mr. Akufo-Addo said his administration has, to that effect, introduced a lot of measures to ease the burden placed on Ghanaians by the virus.

Delivering an update on the measures against the Coronavirus pandemic in Ghana on Sunday, July 25, Mr. Akufo-Addo said: Three days ago, the Minister for Finance, the hardworking, highly patriotic Ghanaian, Ken Ofori-Atta, went to Parliament, and gave the country a candid view of the state of affairs of our economy.

“Not only did he present a compelling review of the efforts put in place over the last three and half years to stabilize and grow our economy, but he was also able to paint a credible picture of hope for the future, despite the ravages caused by COVID-19.

“It is reassuring to see working in real life the bold decision to implement a Relief, Resilience and Recovery plan, with the overarching aim of providing relief to the ordinary Ghanaian, and being able to find more resources to strengthen the productive sectors of the economy to ensure sustained economic activity.”

He added: “Government was able to feed thousands of our people during the period of the lockdown. From April to June, Government gave additional allowances to our healthcare workers, ensured free access to water for all households across the country, fully absorbed electricity bills for one million active lifeline customers, and granted a fifty percent (50%) subsidy on electricity bills of all other customers, using the March 2020 bill as the benchmark.

“Through the Coronavirus Alleviation Programme Business Support Scheme, six hundred million cedis (GH¢600 million) is being disbursed to support micro, small and medium scale enterprises, which have been affected by the economic downturn caused by the pandemic.

“It bears repeating that some of these incentive packages have been extended for the next three months. In my thirteenth (13th) update to the nation, I announced the extension of incentive packages for health workers by another three (3) months, i.e. July, August, and September.

“In the Finance Minister’s mid-year budget review, he, again, announced that all Ghanaians are to enjoy free water supply for another three months. I intend to have it reviewed at the end of the period. The government is also extending free electricity supply to lifeline tariff customers until the end of the year. The Communication Service Tax has also been reduced from 9 percent to 5 percent, effective September 2020.”

Regarding the impending National Unemployment Insurance Scheme, Mr. Akufo-Addo said: “Once approved by Parliament, a National Unemployment Insurance Scheme will be instituted and will provide temporary income support to workers that have lost their jobs.

“Government is increasing funding, under the CAP Business Support Scheme, with an additional one hundred and fifty million cedis (GH¢150 million), to ensure an increased number of beneficiaries. Furthermore, as indicated by the Minister for Finance, Government is establishing a Guarantee Scheme of some two billion cedis (GH¢2 billion) to enable businesses to access credit at more affordable rates so they can survive, and be better able to retain jobs.

“All of these reaffirm our determination to save lives, jobs, and livelihoods, revitalize our economy, and safeguard the future of our country. I assure you that, under my watch as President of the Republic, Government will continue to work to create a diversified, transformed economy, fashion a conducive business climate that will deliver development, progress, and prosperity for all Ghanaians. This is my solemn pledge to you.”

First Atlantic Bank fires Deacon Nimako over Diborah’s case

Mr Ernest Kwasi Nimako has been relieved of his duties at the First Atlantic Bank, this is according to a post by Newsbanc.net.

The report said Deacon Nimako was fired on the back of Deborah Adablah’s controversial lawsuit.

The former Chief Finance Officer of First Atlantic Bank, Mr Nimako is apparently unemployed after publicly being exposed for his romantic relationship with a former National Service personnel at the bank, Deborah Adablah.

A few days ago, a strange writ found its way onto the internet.

The writ exposed that Mr Nimako used his influential position as the CFO to cultivate a romantic relationship with his subordinate Deborah Adablah.

Deborah Adablah dragged him to court over claims that he has been dishonest in providing for her needs.

According to her, Mr Nimako took back a car he bought for her and also failed to pay for her 3 years’ rent after making payment for one year.

Deborah Adablah also disclosed that Deacon Nimako was supposed to be giving her GHC 3000 monthly stipend but he stopped paying in the course of time. And he also refused to give her a lump sum capital to start her own business although they agreed on that.

Deborah Adablah has therefore sued him to take the car back, and get back pay of her monthly stipend among other things.

Meanwhile, she has already cost the man his job!

“GH guys do not know how to dress” – Diaspora girls state their dislike

Girls based abroad have stated why they do not find Ghanaian guys attractive.

According to them, most local guys do not know how to dress properly and stand out.

Speaking in a video, these girls took turns stating what irks them about most guys and what probably turned them off.

One of the girls categorically stated that she does not find Ghanaian men attractive because they do not know how to dress to bang.

Other diaspora girls in the video mentioned that guys who do not brush their teeth, guys who lie, guys who are broke, and guys who have an odor are red flags.

One of the strangest things one of the girls said was that she finds guys without nice toes to be a complete turn off.

    The housemates’ preferred pairings

The housemates aren’t major fans of finding themselves in pairs – or, just maybe, they don’t like who they’ve been paired with. Except for Lukay – he thinks Jaypee is peachy.

  • You need US$40,000 to shoot a standard music video in Nigeria – Camidoh

You need US$40,000 to shoot a standard music video in Nigeria – Camidoh

Ghanaian musicianCamidoh has mentioned the standard fee that Nigerians pay to have their music videos shot.

Speaking on Hitz FM, the artiste claimed that it is impossible to release a music video in Nigeria with a very low budget as GH¢12,000.

“In Nigeria, you pay like US$30,000 standard, US$40,000. If you want to be like them, you have to think of a US$50,000 budget for your release.

“You can’t release a music video in Nigeria and think that you are going to spend GH¢12,000. Your music won’t do anything. It is about putting in, that’s how you make it back,” he said.

According to the artiste, many artists are being overlooked unless they prove they are valuable, referencing the price Wizkid asked for his Ghana event that he did not attend.

“How much did Wizkid charge? I was hearing he charged for the stadium show. I feel like we are being marginalised. It comes from the top to the bottom.

“Until you feel like you can make 10,000 cedis a day, or in two weeks when they open your eyes and you realize you can make 500,000 dollars, you realize you’ve been marginalizing yourself,” he added.

  • Funke Akindele chased out of Lagos market while campaigning

Funke Akindele chased out of Lagos market while campaigning

Nollywood actress and PDP deputy governorship candidate in Lagos State Funke Akindele was, on Tuesday, chased out of the Ikosi fruit market by suspected thugs while campaigning.

Speaking on the incident, the PDP governorship candidate, Abdul-Azeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, in an interview with NAN, confirmed that their campaign was cut short following the incident.

During a meeting with the chief Imam of Ketu Central Mosque, Jandor confirmed that a security team member was stabbed while others, including journalists, were injured.

However, he confirmed that the actress left the campaign train while the team continued to move around the streets in the council.

In October 2022, Jandor cried out over similar situations that had happened repeatedly in various local government areas since he kicked off his tour of 245 wards.

    PDP laments

PDP Lagos spokesperson, Hakeem Amode, in an interview with Premium Times alleged that the local government chairperson sent the hoodlums to disrupt their campaign.

He said: “Usually when we go to the market, Funke Akindele goes to the market to speak with the Market women, and we know it is our right to be able to talk freely, a campaign to anybody.”

He alleged that the Ikosi LCDA Chairperson- Abolanle Bada, brought thugs to intimidate them.

He said: “the local government chairperson came into the market, used her car to block and brought a bunch of thugs to attack us in Kosofe local government, which is very, very sad; it is unbelievable we are not allowed to speak to people freely.”

“Under the new electoral act, we are free to campaign anywhere; this is Lagos, where we should be able to talk to everybody without intimidation or discrimination. That should not even happen,” he added.

He also claimed that this was not the first time it has happened.

    More than hoodlums

Mr Hakeem also revealed that the intimidation has escalated past the point of harassment during the market campaigns.

“Those we gave our campaign materials to, they have gone to evict them from their house and ask them not to come to the market; they came crying to our campaign offices. These are market women that paid for the stalls they are using in the market.”

“Why should we come to this level of harassment and intimidation of our members? Even market women.”

Again, he stated they had been attacked in other markets.

Mr Hakeem claimed that the team had no choice but to retreat and join Jandor, where he was campaigning, so the situation would not escalate more violently.

The PRO once again claimed that the Chairperson of the Ikosi LCDA was responsible for the thuggery on Tuesday, and he had videos to show for it.

    APC’s response

When PREMIUM TIMES called the spokesperson for the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Lagos, Seye Oladejo, concerning the allegations, he denied knowledge of the said event.

He said: “The PDP people are well known for their wild allegations; if people were attacked, I think it is what the security agencies would be interested in; I don’t think the solution is to take it to the media.”

“As far as we are concerned, we are not in the business of violence; our party is going for victory, so why should we be distracted by people who cannot even put their house in order and want to come into government.”

Mr Oladejo claimed that APC is not under any pressure for the election and advised any party claiming to be attacked to take the matter to the law.

The actress, popularly known as Jenifa, was officially unveiled as Jandor’s running mate in her hometown, Ikorodu, in July 2022.

Jandor chose her among a list of five nominees, which included Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, Kolawole Vaughan, Adenike Shobajo, and Rasheed Teslim-Balogun.

  • Parliament yet to effect change in Minority leadership on website

Parliament yet to effect change in Minority leadership on website

The current shake-up in the leadership of the Minority Caucus in Parliament, which occurred on Tuesday, January 24, has evidently left some of the populace in a daze. The Parliament house is no exception.

Missed out on the current news? Well, here is a quick recap of what happened on Tuesday.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) decided to make sudden changes in their leadership in Parliament.

Former Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrissu was replaced with Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Deputy Minority Leader, James Klutse Avedzi has been succeeded by Kofi Armah Buah and the former Minority Chief Whip, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka has been replaced by Governs Kwame Agbodza.

Now, although these changes have been made, Parliament does not seem to have recovered from this reshuffling in the leadership of the NDC.

Because, despite these changes that were made two days ago, the official website of the Parliament has not updated information on the minority leaders.

Unbelievable! Right? Care to see the evidence for yourself?

JoyNews’ checks on the website shows that under the ‘MPs & Office-Bearers’ category, where leaders in parliament are listed, the previous minority leaders are the ones still recognised.

This screen shot was taken at 5:00pm on Thursday January 26, 2023

Whatever has brought about this delay? Parliament is also yet to make a comment on the changes the NDC has made in the house.

But there is a clue. Addressing a press conference on Thursday, the former Majority Leader, Cletus Avoka, noted that the letter by the party’s General Secretary to the Speaker of Parliament has no effect.

According to him, Parliament is currently on recess and therefore there can be no applicable changes to the leadership structure of the NDC Minority in the House.

He explained that the purported changes in the letter can only be implemented if the Speaker of Parliament reads it before the entire House; stressing that until that is done, Haruna Iddrisu remains the Minority Leader, likewise his other colleagues.

“We’re on recess. By the Speaker’s invitation we’re returning on the 7th of February, 2023 so we’re not yet in the House.

“Against that background, it is when the Speaker reads the letter he has received from the Secretary of the party indicating the reshuffle to the members of the House that it can take effect.

“As of now, we’re on recess, we’re not there. So as far as we’re concerned, the current leaders of the House, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu, Muntaka and co are deemed to still be in office”, he emphasised.

  • We have more opportunities in Ghana and Africa than elsewhere – Togbe Afede

We have more opportunities in Ghana and Africa than elsewhere – Togbe Afede

Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of Asogli State, has rallied University graduates to perceive opportunities within the present economic situation and seek to contribute to the development of Ghana and its parent continent.

He said University students should be able to lead development efforts of the country and the Continent and should consider that a means to justify the investments in higher education.

Togbe Afede was addressing the Seventh UHAS Congregation on Saturday as special guest of honour, where he called on graduands to resist the urge to abandon the motherland for perceived better opportunities abroad but take up the responsibility of nation building.

“There is the temptation to join the exodus to other countries for greener pastures. But you should consider that there are more opportunities in Ghana and Africa than elsewhere. Ghana presents a green field – an environment that gives us the opportunity to make an input and you can distinguish yourself.

“This you must not miss. You have a responsibility. The country has invested a lot in your group, and it is your responsibility to help develop your country.”

Togbe Afede who has dedicated his life to the development of Africa and concentrated his business interests on the Continent, said although the homeland of the black race retained a tag of poverty and underdevelopment, its dominance of the world’s natural resources should be viewed as an opportunity by its budding university population,

He said Africa’s graduates needed to therefore “think outside the box,” adding “the main essence of University education is to liberate the mind and create astute decision makers”.

Acknowledging the effects of the global situation on the Ghana and the Continent, the Agbogbomefia said “Change and uncertainty brings opportunity.

“With liberated minds we should be able to think creatively to change the situation. You should enter the world with courage. The nation is looking up to university students to come and contribute to solving challenges facing the country. With innovation you can work with minimal resources.

Togbe Afede spent close to an hour mentoring students, calling them to be ambitious, dream big, and aim high.

He called to eschew greed and corruption, and work hard with the aim of impacting the world positively.

The Agbogbomefia also advised the graduates to consider planning as an especially important component of human development and asked further to consider strong social values including empathy, respect for one another, and love.

The 1st session of the 7th Congregation of the University graduated 826, 799 of which were undergraduates.

The UHAS School of Pharmacy graduated its first batch of 30, and the School of Medical Imaging also passed out the first set of regular students.

Professor Lydia Aziato, Vice Chancellor (VC), said UHAS continued to show exceptional academic standing, and had registered 7903 students for 2022/23 academic year, and that 864 staff strength was inadequate.

She said infrastructural expansion within the University also remained minimal although a major need.

“The infrastructural needs of UHAS are crucial. Several of the schools are not available, and there are more than 3,000 qualified students for where we can only admit 150. Hostel accommodation only takes 2000, so we need support for hostels for our students. We have the land, but we do not have the money.”

Development of the over 700-acre land for the University’s main campus at Sokode Lokoe is within the second phase, completion of which is expected early next year to provide permanent structures for the School of Nursing and Midwifery and the central administration.

The University has no library and ICT complex, while a mega central laboratory complex is entering the tenth year of delayed construction amidst growing needs for advanced laboratory facilities for the prime health research institution.

The ceremony was attended by members of the university community and families of the graduates, and present were past leaders of the University, local and international partners, and members of the nation’s political leadership.

Togbe Afede said the Asogli State sought to “closely identify with programs of the University,” and there donated 50,000 to support the UHAS Endowment Fund.

Newcastle not after Gordon anymore; Chelsea take the lead

Newcastle enquired to Everton about Anthony Gordon, but now the Magpies have withdrawn their offer. It is now Chelsea who are the ones said to be interested in getting the English forward.

Anthony Gordon is one of Everton’s best players. That is why certain Premier League clubs are thought to be interested in the forward this January and to have enquired about him.

One of those sides was Newcastle, who are having a great campaign and are currently third in the table, behind City and Arsenal. However, ‘Sky Sports’ have reported that Eddie Howe’s side have taken themselves out of contention.

Their goal to get into the Champions League is on the horizon, but they have rejected the English youngster, which, according to ‘Northern Echo’, is something that has sparked interest at Chelsea. The Blues have already spent a lot of money.

After signing Mudryk, Badiashile, Madueke and Joao Felix, the Stamford Bridge board are thinking about getting Anthony Gordon in order to force players out who do not play, such as Pulisic and Ziyech.

  • Africa needs solution driven initiatives to prosper – Dr Bawumia

Africa needs solution driven initiatives to prosper – Dr Bawumia

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has challenged African political and business leaders to develop solution-driven initiatives to deepen intra-continental trade.

That, he said, would be critical to transforming Africa from an import-driven continent to one with increased intra-trade for the prosperity of countries and citizens.

Vice President Bawumia said this at the opening of the maiden Africa Prosperity Summit (Kwahu summit) at Adukrom in the Eastern Region on Thursday.

The summit, which has attracted many high-profile business executives from across the continent, aims to achieve a deeper economic integration between African states to make the continent self-reliant.

Dr Bawumia said Africa ought to change the narrative of being a poor and underdeveloped continent, proposing three priority areas to transition countries to prosperity.

These three priority areas include smart investment in critical infrastructure, unleashing the continent’s productive capacities to make Africa an industrial zone and the mobilization of finance and investment.

On investment, Dr Bawumia said there was a need for increased funds in the road, rail, energy, and digital infrastructure, as well as data centres to facilitate the digital transformation and financial infrastructure for the integration of markets.

“As a continent, we need to produce and trade our way out of poverty and underdevelopment, and we cannot do that without investing in smart infrastructure,” he said, noting that such a move would be critical to delivering the success of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The AfCFTA is expected to boost the continent’s income to some $450 billion by 2035 and lift about 30 million people from extreme poverty.

Dr Bawumia said the AfCFTA was a real game changer and “once fully realized, we can increase intra-Africa trade by some $35 billion and reduce external imports by some $10 billion annually.”

He urged governments and businesses on the continent to implement concrete strategic actions through the right mix of policies and greater sense of purpose for more robust intra-African trade to support economic diversification.

The Vice-President also called for the creation of platforms for knowledge brokerage and access to information on critical products and services.

This will allow some 445 million small businesses across the continent to plug into the value chains of mega industries to leapfrog Africa’s industrialisation and socio-economic development.

Dr Bawumia noted that Africa’s need for $270 billion annually to bridge its infrastructure gap to generate sustainable growth at five per cent per annum, presented opportunities for private sector investment.

“As key stakeholders, we must consolidate the successes so far with a sense of urgency, develop the signature solutions needed to deepen intra-Africa trade and spur impactful investments needed and we must do this with fearless determination,” he said.

Mr Wamkele Mane, the Secretary General of AfCFTA, said Africa must accelerate trade in agriculture by reducing and eliminating both tariff and non-tariff barriers that restrict the movement of agricultural products.

He said the Secretariat had established the necessary legal instruments required for traders, exporters, and economic operators to take advantage of the AfCFTA.

Dr Eugene Owusu, the Executive Director of the Africa Prosperity Network, organisers of the event, called for a collective framework to spur impact investment for Africa’s growth.

“I suggest everybody visits the mortuary once or twice in a month and i bet that can tranquilize or humble those of us who feel better than others.

“And teach us how to love and respect one another….The end of man will teach you only one thing! We are nothing but dust “Lord have mercy on us..”, he wrote

Energy Ministry prepares to tackle cyber attacks on energy infrastructure

Ghana’s Energy Ministry has commenced processes to avert the possibility of cyber-attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure.

As part of the processes, the Ministry, last Friday, inaugurated an Energy Sector Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) implementation committee in line with the dictates of section 44 of the Cyber Security Act 2020 (Act 1038).

The Committee is chaired by Andrew Egyapa Mercer, Deputy Minister for Energy, and supported by Dr Albert Antwi Boasiako, Director General of the Cyber Security Authority.

Inaugurating the committee, the Minister for Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh remarked that Ghana’s energy sector infrastructure within the context of the global energy value chain is not insulated from cyber-attacks, which means there must be deliberate efforts at combating such crimes, as the incapacitation and destruction of this infrastructure would have a devastating impact on the national economy.

The Minister, in a post on the Ministry of Energy’s Facebook page sighted by energynewsafrica.com, further indicated his recognition of the need for effective cyber security control in the energy sector.

“This, I believe, will help us quickly detect and prevent potential cyber incidents and minimise their impacts, even when they occur,” Dr Opoku Prempeh said

The Minister tasked the committee to, among others, harmonise the efforts of all stakeholders to ensure that “we have a firm grip over the cyber security space of our sector.

“As sector Minister, I remain committed to synergizing our efforts with the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) for a smooth implementation process,” he said

He continued: “The cyberspace of the energy sector is very important as far as guarding the sanctity of the work we do is concerned. We are, thus, prioritising it with all the seriousness we can muster.”
