The benchmark discount policy on goods and automobiles will be totally reversed starting on January 1, 2023, according to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
“All sector commanders are to ensure that copies are made available to their officers and other stakeholders”, it said, adding: “Officers are advised to take note of the content of the order and apply the provisions, accordingly”.
It said: “Any difficulties encountered in the application of the directives should be communicated to the Commissioner for clarification”.
The couple enjoyed some PDA as they touched down for a romantic getaway
We haven’t seen GMA‘s Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes on our screens lately, but new photos show that off-screen, the couple’s romance is going strong.
Karen Silas Photos of GMA’s Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes show the Good Morning America co-hosts enjoying some PDA as they jetted into Atlanta for the New Year holiday vacation.
Two weeks after their first cozy date in public, the high profile pair are apparently spending the New Year together far from the fallout of their bombshell romance.
Their romantic relationship apparently began back in March when they began training for the New York City marathon together – and they’ve since both split from their respective partners of 12 years, Marilee Fiebig and Andrew Shue.
TJ and Amy – who recently revealed her wedding night fight with her now-estranged husband – kept the affair secret, but when the news finally broke, it became one of the most talked-about celebrity romances of 2022.
And now,the couple has been spotted enjoying some PDA as they kick off their holiday vacation in Georgia on December 26.
Both casually dressed, TJ and Amy were seen walking through Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport looking more loved-up than ever
The cedi took a climb to GH¢11 to $1 in October. This came as a shock to many as Ghanaians were expecting an appreciation from the local currency against the trading currencies.
As part of measures to avert the depreciation of the cedi, the government run to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for financial bailout.
The IMF bailout would help rescue the cedi, as well as, stabilize the economy that has taken a nose dive.
While Ghana awaits the money from IMF, international credit rating agencies; Moody’s, Fitch, Standard and Poors’, remarked that Ghana’s economy looked gloomy.
This led to a hike in the monetary policy rate by the Bank of Ghana to 24. 5%. The hike in the policy rate was to stem the soaring inflation which has subsequently led to an increase in goods and services.
Cedi depreciates further, highest decline in 22 years – Report
Bloomberg has on Thursday, October 20, 2022, reported that Ghana’s local currency – the cedi – has diminished in value by 9.6%.
This, the news portal said, makes the total loss of the cedi in 2022 almost 52%, the highest recorded in 22 years.
The free fall of the cedi now places the currency at the 148 position of worst performing currencies in the world.
The currency had lost up to 54 per cent of its value at the end of November, making it one of the worst performing currencies in the world.
Meanwhile, Government of Ghana is targeting an amount of $3 billion over a three-year period from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) once an agreement on a programme is reached.
The new amount requested as a loan is double the government’s initial target of $1.5 billion.
The IMF programme is aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability and safeguarding debt sustainability among many others.
UK based Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has however predicted doom for the cedi.
It said the cedi will depreciate about 22% against the dollar in 2023.
This, EIU said will rank the local currency as the third weakest performing currency on the African continent.
The year 2022 has been one of the best years in Black Sherif’s life in terms of his musical career.
The rapper has once again received praise after his song Kwaku the Traveller took first place as the most streamed Hip-Hop/Rap song of the year, just a few days before 2022 comes to an official close.
He faced stiff competition from songs like Wait For You by Future featuring Tems and Drake, ArrDee’s Come & Go, Always by Darkoo, Jack Harlow’s First Class, Hustle by Reminisce feat. BNXN fka Buju and D Smoke, JAE5’s Hustle featuring BNXN fka Buju and Dove, Olamide’s Hate Me featuring Wande Coal and Running by Ladipoe featuring Fireboy DML
Sherif’s story is written in stars. Born and raised in Konongo in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, the rapper whose birthname is Mohammed Ismail Sharif, got interested in music while attending senior high school at Kumasi Academy. His first foray into music started in 2019 but his light was not to shine until 2021 when his songs “First Sermon” and “Second Sermon” released in May and July of that year become instant hits. The two songs became the fastest two songs to reach 1 million streams on Boomplay that year.
Nigerian sensational singer and performer, Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, popularly known as Ayra Starr, slipped and fell on stage during her performance at Afrochella 2022.
Ayra Starr was among the superstars performing at the two-day music festival.
The event, which is described as a celebration of Africa’s diverse culture and the vibrant work of African creatives and entrepreneurs, staged a two-day concert that commenced on December 28th and will end on December 29th.
With artists like Burna Boy, Stonebwoy, Asake, Fireboy DML, Kwesi Arthur, Gyakie, and a host of other heavyweights billed for performances, Mavin star girl and diva, Ayra Starr, was also in the mix and rendered a soothing performance on the first day of the 2-day show
However, while performing her label’s smash hit “Won Da Mo,” the lovely Ayra Starr fell awkwardly on stage but quickly got back up.
Reacting to the fall, Ayra called out the organizers of the show for not cleaning the stage before her performance. Describing the fall as painful and unnecessary, she wrote:
“Afrochella next time y’all should clean your stage after every artist’s performance, that fall was very unnecessary and painful”
The Savelugu Municipal Rice Processing Factory, which received funding through the government’s One District, One Factory (1D1F) Common User Facility (CUF) Initiative, is equipped with cutting-edge rice processing technology and has the capacity to produce 1.5 and 2.8 tonnes of processed rice per hour.
The factory’s construction started in January 2020 and was finished and turned over in July 2021.
The processing plant installed at the factory included a modern parboiling, milling, and packaging plants with a standby generator and a mechanised borehole to supply the factory with water.
It also has a warehouse, fully furnished office accommodation, a conference room, laboratory room and a canteen for the workers.
The total cost of the factory is about Gh¢7.375 million, including the cost of factory building, processing plant and machinery, offices, office equipment, and a Nissan Double Cabin Pickup vehicle.
The Savelugu Municipal Union of Rice Farmers Association LBG (the mother Association of all Rice Farmer-Based Organisations in the Savelugu Municipality), owned the factory by 70 per cent while the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Savelugu Municipal Assembly, and the Traditional Council also owned 10 per cent each.
Mr Kyerematen said, “Despite the hard work of farmers in this area, they still remain poor because they are unable to take advantage of the full value of what they produce. This facility will help reverse the narrative.”
He swore into office a nine-member Board of Directors to oversee the management and operations of the factory.
Mr Akwasi Attah Antwi, National Director, Rural Enterprises Programme, said the factory was expected to employ about 118 people, including management professionals, factory floor workers, and plantation workers, who would work on the nucleus rice farms.
He said, “In addition, over 754 farmers in the Savelugu Municipality and neighbouring communities will be directly engaged to supply rice to the factory.”
He said, “With funding from the African Development Bank, the Rural Enterprises Programme has established five of the CUFs nationwide; Savelugu Municipality of the Northern Region, Dormaa West District of the Bono Region, Sefwi Akontombra District of the Western North Region, Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region and Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region.”
Alhaji Shani Alhassan Saibu, the Northern Regional Minister, said the factory would serve as a catalyst that would bring about the needed development in the region while enhancing food security in the country.
Hajia Ayishetu Seidu, Savelugu Municipal Chief Executive, said it would help address unemployment and attract young people into the agricultural sector.
She urged residents to take advantage of the initiative to enhance sustainable growth and development of the area.
Alhaji Sayibu Braimah, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the factory, pledged to discharge their duties efficiently to ensure that the factory achieved its intended purpose.
Meanwhile, Mr Kyerematen has also inaugurated the Savelugu Technology Solution Centre to facilitate the production of spare parts and repair services, manufacturing of agro-processing equipment, and providing training for human resource and capacity building for various businesses in the area, including the factory.
The government’s 1D1F CUF is a farmer-owned agro-industrial processing facility established with seed funding from the Ministry of Trade and Industry under the Rural Enterprises Programme.
It seeks to enhance the ability of farmers and other agricultural value chain actors, with little or no financial capacity, to establish their own common user processing facilities to process their farm produce.
Alexis Mac Allister’s father and representative Carlos has labelled Juventus “one of the most prestigious clubs in the world” amid growing speculation over the midfielder’s future.
Brighton and Hove Albion star Mac Allister is a player in demand after starting six of Argentina’s seven games in their triumphant World Cup 2022 campaign.
The 24-year-old signed a new three-year deal in October, with the option for Brighton to extend it by a further year, yet that has done little to quell interest from elsewhere.
Premier League trio Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea have been linked, but Juventus are reportedly the frontrunners to sign Mac Allister next year.
And Mac Alister’s agent spoke highly of the Serie A giants when providing an update on the former Boca Juniors loanee’s future on Thursday.
“Juventus is a huge club, one of the most prestigious in the world,” Carlos Mac Allister told Tuttomercato.
“I can only say that together with [Brighton] we will analyse the offers we receive, then we will decide what will happen to Alexis’ future.
“He is doing very well in England and he is grateful to Brighton because they gave him the possibility to play in Europe.
“However, we cannot provide a price, nor do we say who has called us. We don’t want to give information that could prejudice imminent negotiations, if any.”
Mac Allister scored a crucial goal for Argentina in their group-stage win against Poland and assisted Angel Di Maria’s goal in a thrilling final with France.
The 14-cap midfielder has started 14 of Brighton’s 15 matches this season, missing only Monday’s 3-1 win at Southampton as he enjoys a post-World Cup break.
Discussing the speculation surrounding Mac Allister earlier this month, Brighton chief executive Paul Barber said he is confident the club can keep hold of their prized asset.
“As we’ve always said, when players do well, when their profile increases, there’s always going to be interest in them,” Barber said.
“This will be no different; Alexis is no different. There was interest in him before the World Cup and I’m sure there will be more interest in him afterwards.
“All we can do in situations where you’ve got a great asset is to try and protect yourself as best as possible. We’ve done that with several of our players and staff.
“That’s all you can do in these situations. We hope Alexis will continue to be playing for us for some time to come.”
Beginning January 1, 2023, the costs of petroleum goods will drop significantly, according to the Institute for Energy Security.
They place the blame for the decrease on the cedi’s recent stability as well as the 5.28% and 5.09% drops in the price of gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas, respectively.
“Prices are, therefore, set to reach ¢9.50 and ¢11.60 per litre for gasoline [petrol] and gasoil [diesel] respectively, and ¢9 per kilogram for LPG in the coming days,” the Institute stated.
Fuel prices began reducing from the second pricing window of December 2022.
This was also attributed to the cedi’s appreciation against the dollar.
Diesel was also pegged at a national average price per litre moved from¢18.78 from ¢15.55; falling by roughly 17.20%.
On the international market, Brent fell by 0.51% over the previous window’s average price of $81.90 per barrel to the present average price of $81.48 per barrel.
Afrochella is renowned for being one of the musical concerts that births not just musical creativity but also fashion inspiration.
The event has become a ground for the exhibition of both bizarre and classic fashion trends.
Going off the little can be great sometimes, but it can also draw attention that one may not like but that’s the fun of Afrocehlla; not many gatherings promote fashion experimentation and risk-taking as this annual event.
GhanaWeb examined some of the most divisive and topical aspects of the concert, focusing on the outfits that people can’t help but talk about year after year.
Fashion they say is subjective and just at it did in previous years, this year’s Afrochella served both ridiculous and impressive fashion styles.
Below are some fashion moments that caused a big stir at Afrochella this year
Shakhtar Donetsk will continue to negotiate with Arsenal over a deal for Mykhaylo Mudryk but warned they will only sell at the right price.
Arsenal are reported to have had a bid of £57million (€64.4m) for winger Mudryk rejected by the Ukrainian champions.
Shakhtar director Carlo Nicolini on Wednesday stated that the club will expect a fee closer to the £100m (€113.2m) Manchester City paid for Jack Grealish than the £82m (€92.7m) Manchester United stumped up for Antony.
Sergei Palkin was due to hold further talks with the Premier League leaders on Thursday, yet the Shakhtar CEO stressed the club’s prized asset will be going nowhere if the Gunners do not offer what they are looking for.
He told the club’s official website: “Negotiations are continuing. We receive offers, but they are not the ones we would like to see on our table.
“Now, literally in five minutes, I will have a phone conversation with Arsenal. We are open to negotiations, ready to exchange ideas and figures. If we will agree, then let it be so. If we will not, then let it be another time.”
Palkin’s comments come after Nicolini told Calcio Mercato: “I confirm that Arsenal is one of the most active teams.
“When there is an interested company, we ask: ‘Make a proposal and when we have it in hand we start to negotiate.’
“As we have always said, to deal with Mudryk, you need an important offer. Arsenal may have made such an offer, but there is negotiation.
“Players were sold that the clubs wanted to sell and that we consider no stronger than Mudryk with a valuation of around £100m, so we consider no less than £60m.
“I am not the one to make the figure, I have no particular indications from the company, but the director has said that we need an important offer closer to Grealish than for Antony. If the cash figure is £40m, it is not even taken into account.
When banks replace their current debt with new bonds that have lower coupons and longer tenors, according to Fitch, they will experience significant economic losses.
This might result in significant capital shortages at some banks, but we anticipate that regulatory forbearance will lessen the effect and allow banks to continue complying with minimum capital standards.
The two Ghanaian banks rated by Fitch have sizeable capital buffers that should help their ratings withstand the LC debt exchange, even disregarding regulatory forbearance.
The LC debt exchange, launched on December 5, comes alongside Ghana’s efforts to secure IMF support.
Ghana’s Ministry of Finance has stated that the debt exchange is voluntary but we expect banks to participate, particularly as the risk-weighting for the old bonds will be increased to 100% from 0%, and non-participating banks will not be eligible for liquidity support from Ghana’s newly created financial stability fund.
Treasury Bills, which account for about 15% of the banking system’s securities according to Bank of Ghana data, are excluded from the restructuring.
Based on the coupon rates and tenors of the new bonds, and assuming a 20% discount rate, we estimate that banks exchanging old LC government bonds will suffer a net present value loss of about 50%.
This would significantly erode banking system capitalisation.
However, we expect the authorities to allow flexible accounting treatment to significantly reduce losses, and to ease regulatory capital requirements so that banks can still meet minimum capital ratios.
Holders of LC government bonds were originally given until 19 December to formally respond to the exchange invitation but the deadline has been extended to 30 December.
Fitch believes there is much opposition to the terms of the exchange, which raises the prospect of a further extension of the deadline and potentially a relaxation of the terms, reducing the losses imposed on creditors.
On December 20, 2022, the government announced plans to restructure its external sovereign debt, which will add to the pressure on banks’ capital.
Details have yet to be announced but payments on selected external debt, including Eurobonds, commercial term loans, and most bilateral debt, have been suspended.
Guaranty Trust Bank (Ghana) Limited and United Bank for Africa (Ghana) Limited, both with a Long-Term IDR of ‘B-’/Stable and a Viability Rating (VR) of ‘ccc’.
Taking account of these banks’ sovereign debt portfolio compositions, ample capital buffers and good headroom on other rating factors, we believe their VRs should be able to withstand both the LC and foreign-currency debt restructure, in addition to impending asset quality deterioration due to the effects of severe currency depreciation, extremely high inflation and large interest rate rises.
The two banks’ Long-Term IDRs are driven by our view that support from the banks’ Nigeria-based parents is likely to be provided, if needed. We do not expect Ghana’s debt restructure to affect the owners’ stance in this respect. Foreign-owned banks, which account for about half of banking system assets in Ghana, may be better-placed than domestic banks to navigate the highly stressed operating conditions due to parental capital support.
Naija Rapper, Habeeb Okikiola popularly known as Portable has got Ghanaians talking with his unbelievable stage craft at a concert in Ghana.
Portable arrived on the stage to perform in a coffin. It was an unbelievable moment for the audience as they watched him come out of the coffin in disbelief.
The white coffin was brought in by pallbearers dressed in a white uniform. Netizens dumbstruck by the stage craft expressed their views.
Most believe death is a serious thing to play with. They cautioned Portable to be extremely careful with these stuff as it may have adverse effects.
The action is in line with the government’s 2023 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, which aims to increase revenue while also boosting local productive capacity. It also introduces policies for the protection and incubation of newly formed domestic industries to enable them to make Ghanaian goods competitive for both domestic and international markets.
Per the new policy, discounts on import values have been revised from the prevailing 30 percent for vehicles to 10 percent.
All other goods will have discounts on import values of 30 percent instead of the prevailing 50 percent.
There is however a transitional arrangement for the provision of storage free period for consignments discharged on December 31, 2022, from arriving means of conveyance to go through clearance without being affected by the reversal policy.
In addition, all pre-arrival declarations processed and tax paid even when the goods have not arrived before January 1, 2023, shall not be affected by the reversal policy.
Related: Discretionary discounts on imported vehicles, goods; OSP expresses gratification over reversal
Meanwhile the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has expressed gratification over the reversal of the discretionary discounts.
On August 3, 2022, the Office of the Special Prosecutor published an investigative report in respect of a complaint against Labianca Company Limited and the Customs Division of Ghana Revenue Authority.
A major finding of the investigation, which led to the recovery of GHC1,074,627.15, is that there appears to be an institutionalised culture of lighthearted unconcern regarding impropriety of action at the Customs Division in respect of the grant of customs advance rulings and other rulings regarding the importation of goods – which indicates a high propensity to engender corruption and corruption-related activities.
On the basis of the report, the Special Prosecutor directed the commencement of a wider investigation into the issuance of customs advance rulings and markdowns of benchmark values and an attendant investigation in respect of the auction of goods and vehicles by the Customs Division.
In a statement issued Thursday afternoon (December 29, 2022), the OSP noted, “with gratification, that following its various investigations and interventions at the Customs Division, the Government has reversed the discretionary discount on the free on board (FOB) value of goods and the home delivery value (HDV) of vehicles effective 1 January 2023.”
“The new policy effectively shuts all avenues for officers of the Customs Division to grant discretionary markdowns and removes opportunity for corruption and corruption-related activities,” the OSP stated.
“The various investigations commenced by the OSP at the Customs Division would still proceed nonetheless and the Office will monitor the implementation of the new policy.”
Kylian Mbappe will not get over France’s defeat in the World Cup final to Argentina any time soon, but the forward says he is now fully focused on Paris Saint-Germain.
Despite notching a hat-trick for Didier Deschamps side in the final, Mbappe and his international team-mates came up short as Les Bleus were beaten on penalties in the showpiece game of Qatar 2022.
While club-mate Lionel Messi is yet to return to Paris following his triumph, Mbappe made a swift return to domestic action, securing a late 2-1 win against Strasbourg in Ligue 1 on Wednesday despite Neymar being sent off just after the hour-mark.
Speaking after scoring a 96th-minute penalty he had won himself, the 24-year-old acknowledged the pain of France’s loss in Doha will stay with him forever, but stressed he does not feel his team-mates should pay the price for those emotions.
“Personally, I will never stomach it,” he said. “[But] my club is not responsible for this failure with the national team. I try to come back with positive energy.
“I tried to bring a boost to my team, and [we hope to] continue our season undefeated. It was a World Cup – the club has nothing to do with it.”
On making a swift return to PSG from international duty, Mbappe underlined his commitment to keeping club and country matters separate, adding: “The message is simple. It shows that no matter what happens with the national team, PSG are something else. I am still determined to bring all the trophies back to the capital.”
Mbappe’s late goal against Strasbourg means Christophe Galtier’s side have dropped points just twice in Ligue 1 this season, with an unbeaten Champions League record to match too.
They next play second-place Lens on New Year’s Day, where they will hope to open up further daylight between them and their main title rival, who they are eight points clear of having played a game more.
Subchiefs in the Asante-Mampong Traditional Territory have praised Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, the Paramount Chief of the Asante-Mampong and the holder of the Silver Stool of Asanteman, for proposing the notion to forgo unlawful mining (galamsay) in the traditional area.
The compliment was given by the Gyaasehene, Nana Boakye-Yiadom Atonsa, on behalf of the chiefs at the most recent meeting of the Traditional Council, which took place over the weekend at the Amaniampong Silver Stool Palace in Asante-Mampong.
He noted that, illegal mining has destroyed several farm lands and water bodies in many communities, leaving several people in abject poverty.
Nana Boakye-Yiadom Atonsa said “if such illegal mining goes on in our area, it will definitely destroy our water bodies, poison our main source of drinking water and furthermore destroy our farm lands”.
He assured Daasebre Osei Bonsu that, the Chiefs were ever prepared to continue to rally solidly behind him in the efforts to bring sanity in the area.
He was of the belief that none of the chiefs would compromise with such principles, stressing that it will be suicidal for the chiefs to allow themselves to be used by those unscrupulous and diabolical nation wreckers who were always in for their personal aggrandizement.
Daasebre Osei Bonsu for his part, thanked his chiefs for their commendation and assurance and noted that such meaningful backing provided by the chiefs give him the necessary impetus to exhibit more of his endowed potential to the fullest.
He praised the chiefs for backing the idea and stressed that he was there for the development of the Mampong Traditional Area and will not countenance with anything which will not be of the interest of the Traditional Area.
The Mamponghene urged the chiefs in his Traditional Area to continue working in unity with their Queen Mothers and their subjects and noted that such effective coordination will definitely bring development.
Daasebre Osei Bonsu said his doors would continue to be opened for advice and suggestions all for the best interest of the area.
It will be recalled that the Minerals Commission had published an Application of Notice pending the application for mineral rights to allow Active Target Natural Resources Limited to mine in the Mampong Traditional area.
Consequently, Nananom at a meeting, called on the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources to halt any plans by the Minerals Commission to undertake any mining activities within the Mampong Traditional Area.
However, following the unyielding position of the Traditional Council led by the Omanhene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, the Minerals Commission retreated.
The Commission’s letter signed by its Chief Executive, Martin Kwaku Ayisi, and copied to the Mamponghene, said: “We note that Nananom have voiced their objection to any mineral activities or operations in the Mampong Traditional Area.
He claimed that the Supreme Court’s judges’ perspectives were crucial for national development, particularly during these trying times, as the policy court where significant rulings on socioeconomic growth were crafted in response to the needs of the time.
Justice Barbara Frances Ackah-Yensu and Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu Asiedu succeeds two justices; the late Justice Samuel Marful-Sau, who passed away in August 2021 and Justice Yaw Apau, who retired in August 2021.
President Akufo-Addo is waiting Parliament’s approval for the remaining two nominees, Justice George Kingsley Koomson and Justice Ernest Yao Gaewu to fill the vacancies created by the retirement of Justice Clemence Jackson Honyenuga in September 2022 and Agnes Mercy Abla Dordzie who retired in October 2022.
Basis
The President noted that in the situations where judges proffer judgments on the basis of decisions of lower courts and cite them as law was not acceptable and even lesser when a judge cite no authority at all for their rulings and gave orders without reasons.
He charged the two judges to the apex court to note that it was extremely important to bear in mind that the growth of the nation demanded a judiciary that commanded the respect of the people by the quality of the delivery of justice as well as by the comportment of its judges.
“Applications of the law must take place without fear or favour affection or ill-will and therefore without recourse to the political, religious or ethnic affiliations of any citizen of the land of any person before you,” he added.
President Akufo-Addo noted that as expressed in the constitution, the Supreme Court, the nation’s court of last resort was not bound to follow decisions of any other court including its own and shall have all the powers of authority and jurisdiction vested in any Court established by the Constitution or any other law.
He said with all other courts bound to follow the decisions of the Supreme court in questions of law, it was critical that the justices of the supreme court possessed a sound knowledge of the law of precedent, which was the bedrock for the evolution of common law.
Response
Justice Ackah-Yensu said it was both a privilege and humbling opportunity for the two of them to be nominated among many other persons and approved to serve as Supreme Court and noted the enormity of the task was not lost of them.
She said it was for that reason that they give God all the glory and thanked all who have made the elevation possible and assured the people of Ghana that “we shall keep faith and keep the fidelity to the constitution and shall remain committed to our judicial oaths. God being our helper.”
Worldwide and over many years to date, several images or pictures have been identified and duly used as the sacred image of Jesus Christ, the son of the Living God. Surprisingly, these “Jesus pictures” have been used by individual Christians as well as Churches and other Christian groupings.
Even in schools and in textbooks, learners have been convinced, or should I say they have been deceived to believe that a certain image was that of Jesus Christ.
The acceptance of these images of Jesus Christ knows no racial bounds for both whites and blacks believe and venerate those pictures and they are used mostly to decorate Christian altars and places of worship. In fact, some Christians even bow before these purported images of Jesus and pray, seeking for divine interventions for their woes.
It is thus ironical that some black Africans who revere the white man’s image claiming that it is the image of Jesus, turn round to say that the human Jesus was an African or whites are claiming ownership over the human Jesus. Other Africans also claim that Jesus was an African because the Holy Family (Jesus and his parents, Mary and Joseph) once lived in Egypt which is on the continent of Africa. Mathew 2: 13-14 reads, “An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt”. In fact, where the Holy Family lived in Egypt can currently be located in the City of Cairo.
Perhaps most Christians have been oblivious of the fact that the Bible which is the blueprint of Christian life cautions believers against image or idol worship and such verses abound both in the New and Old Testaments of the Bible.
In the Old Testament for example, Leviticus 26:1 states, “Do not make idols or set up an image or a sacred stone for yourselves, and do not place a carved stone in your land to bow down before it. I am the Lord your God.” It is equally recorded in the New Testament that Jesus Himself said that God is spirit hence His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and that God seeks such worshipers who worship in spirit (John 4: 23-24).
Destruction of the Images of Jesus Christ
In the 16th-century Protestant Reformation, the followers of John Calvin in particular saw images of Christ as idolatrous and therefore, enforced their removal. Due to their understanding of the second of the Ten Commandments, most Evangelical Protestants still avoid displaying representations of Jesus Christ in their places of worship. John Calvin was a French theologian, pastor and reformer in Geneva during the Protestant Reformation. He was a principal figure in the development of the system of Christian theology, later called Calvinism, including its doctrines of predestination and absolute sovereignty of God.
Robert Powell’s Image Being Worshipped
Most of the images purportedly revered and worshipped by some Christians as image of Jesus Christ are rather images of an English actor by name Robert Powell who played Jesus in the 1977 movie dubbed “Jesus of Nazareth.” Subsequently, Powell’s image went viral globally and has been worshipped by even the church as the image of Jesus Christ. In February 2017, Powell himself became worried about the unfortunate development and accordingly cautioned people not to revere his image for he is not the real Jesus Christ. He said, “I keep saying it and I repeat it to the world since 1977, I am not Jesus Christ. I am simply an actor and British comedian. I am tired of seeing my photos show in places of worship and houses; I just made a movie to earn my life so people should stop worshipping me instead of God.”
So, what started in 1977 (some 45 years ago) as a movie has led to the widespread worship of the lead actor’s image which has been termed as the image of Jesus Christ. It went on until the actor became alarmed and warned people to stop worshiping his images. In the New Testament, Romans 1:22-23 frowns on the worship of images of mortal beings like Robert Powell. The Bible refers to image worshippers as fools. Romans 1:22-23 stipulates, “Although they claimed to be wise, they became foolsand exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.”
In Revelation 19:10, even the angel of God cautioned Apostle John not to worship him (the angel). John said, “I fell at his (the angel’s) feet to worship him, but he said, “No, don’t worship me. I am a servant of God, just like you and your brothers and sisters who testify about their faith in Jesus. Worship only God. For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”
Conclusion
I dare submit without equivocation that veneration or worship of any image purported to be that of Jesus Christ is idolatry and for that matter unchristian and unbiblical. There are no known images of Jesus Christ from his lifetime. Whereas in the Old Testament Kings Saul (1 Samuel 9:2) and David are explicitly described as tall and handsome (1 Samuel 16: 12), there is little indication of Jesus’ physical appearance in the Old or New Testaments.
One may however decipher Jesus’ physical looks to be that of a Jew or Hebrew because His genealogical accounts in the Gospels of Mathew and Luke point to the fact that the human Jesus was a Jew and a Hebrew, born to the Virgin Mary of Galilee, a Jewish city. Jesus was thus an Israelite.
The name and title Israel was given to Jacob (Gen. 32:28, 35:10). Accordingly, Jacob’s descendants are known as Israelites. In as much as Jacob is a descendant of Abraham (he is Abraham’s grandson through Isaac), all Israelites (descendants of Jacob) are also Hebrews (descendants of Abraham). But, not all Hebrews (descendants of Abraham) are Israelites (descendants of Jacob).” For example, the descendants of Esau (Jacob’s twin brother) are Hebrews because they are descendants of Abraham. However, Esau’s descendants are not Israelites because they did not come from Jacob who became known as Israel.
Conversely, the descendants of Judah are known as Jews. All Jews (descendants of Judah) are Israelites (descendants of Jacob) and are also Hebrews (descendants of Abraham). Thus, a Jew is also a Hebrew. So the human Jesus was a Hebrew, an Israelite and a Jew because he emanated from Jacob and Judah.
Based on the fact that Jesus came from Judah’s lineage within the Jacob (Israel) family, the Bible in its New Testament refers to Jesus as the Lion of the Tribe of Judah (Revelation 5: 5). The Lion of the Tribe of Judah title for Jesus emanates from the dying Jacob’s prophetic words to his son Judah. Jacob said to Judah (Genesis 49: 8-10), Judah, your brothers will praise you; your hand will be on the neck of your enemies; your father’s sons will bow down to you. You are a lion’s cub, Judah; you return from the prey, my son. Like a lion he crouches and lies down, like a lioness—who dares to rouse him? The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongsshall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his.
As such, the human Jesus might have looked like the Jews today. If this logic-backed by Biblical verses- is anything to go by, then the image of the British actor and comedian, Robert Powell should not have been designated as the image of Jesus Christ let alone be worshipped or bowed to in churches and at homes.
To this end and on the altar of caution, I repeat the caption for this article, “Do not Revere Any Image Purported to be that of Jesus Christ”
Management of the University of Ghana, Legon has refuted claims that there has been chaos on campus which Management of the School is unable to curtail by providing security.
This comes on the back of a decision by the Management of the University of Ghana (UG) on Tuesday to prevent continuing students from the Mensah Sarbah and Commonwealth Halls from holding a planned news conference on campus.
The said move by Management was reported to have resulted in contention between the leadership of the two halls and the university’s security.
But speaking to Citi News, the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Gordon Awandare said there has been calm on campus and that there are no security issues that need to be attended to.
“There is no issue here, the whole place is calm and people are going about their business and there are no security issues here, and I am not sure why people are talking about security situations because there is nothing going on here.”
He however continued to dispel claims that Management has targeted some students whom it is doing everything possible to make their stay on the campus a bitter experience.
“We are not interested in crippling anybody, but we have a responsibility to ensure that students who want to have a peaceful life on campus are given that and that is what we are doing by taking steps to ensure that students can have a peaceful life on campus.”
“We have had several investigations and certain facts have been established, and we have taken actions based on the facts that have been established so far. We don’t need to wait for everything to be concluded before we take action, we work with the facts that we have as we go along,” Prof Awandare added.
GRA to reverse benchmark discount policy on goods, vehicles from January 1, 2023
From January 2023, importers will no longer enjoy the 10% discount on vehicles and the 30% discount on goods shipped into the country.
This comes after the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), in a statement, announced its decision to reverse discount on the Free on Board (FOB) value on goods and Home Delivery Value (HDV) on vehicles.
Parts of the statement reads, “government’s policy on discounts on import values are as follows; vehicles- zero percent discount instead of the prevailing ten percent discount. All other goods – zero percent discount instead of the prevailing thirty percent discount.”
The authority in the statement further explained that the move is in line with the 2023 Budget statement and Economic Policy.
According to GRA, reversing the benchmark value will help government accrue more revenue for the State.
Meanwhile, GRA has disclosed that the policy change will not affect pre-arrival imports that have been processed and taxed.
Additionally, the authority stated that consignments released on December 31, 2022, will be given a storage-free term as a result of interim agreements.
GRA further encouraged all sector commanders under the Customs Division to enforce the directive and ensure that copies of the directive are made available to their officers and all other stakeholders.
Background
The Benchmark Value Discount Policy was introduced in April 2019 by government in an attempt to make the Ghanaian ports competitive, reduce smuggling and increase government’s revenue from the port.
The policy provided a discount of 50% on the delivery or benchmark values of imports with the exceptions of vehicles.
The delivery values for vehicles were reduced by 30%.
This is done to aid in decongesting the central business district (CBD), which is clogged with trading activity and makes it difficult for people and vehicles to move around.
The Ashanti Regional Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Ama Ampomah who made the appeal said there is enough space at the Race Course to accommodate all displaced traders as a result of the construction works at the Kumasi Central Market.
Nana Ama Ampomah made the appeal on Wednesday, (December 27, 2022) when she had lunch with traders at the Race Course Market and also donated some food items to them as part of activities marking the yuletide.
All the streets within the CBD including walkways have been taken over by traders who have displayed their wares thus creating congestion within the CBD.
Both vehicular and human traffic have become an everyday occurrence over the past few weeks.
“I am shocked seeing all these sheds unoccupied and I would therefore appeal to all hawkers in and around Adum and Kejetia to come here and occupy sheds here so that we can continue our trading activities in decent atmospheres”, she appealed.
The Women’s Organiser also appealed to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly and all other stakeholders including the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) to work out a plan to encourage the hawkers to take spaces at the race course.
The Race Course Market Queen, Nana Yaa Foriwaa, commended the Regional Women’s Organiser for visiting them as she has done over years to break bread with them.
She was also grateful for the promise to help the market women to access loans from MASLOC and also to get the authorities to attend to the bad bridge leading to the market.
According to him, the girls senior high school would give girls the chance to complete their senior high school education while the rural bank, which would be dubbed the New Juaben Rural Bank, would largely offer soft loans to individuals in the area.
On Monday, December 26, 2022, as a part of the local Christmas celebrations, the Omanhene announced his plan at a banquet and awards night.
The dinner was attended by a number of dignitaries such as the Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong, the Member of Parliament (MP) for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for New Juaben South, Isaac Appaw-Gyasi, Gabby Asare Otchere Darko, the Aburihene, Otoobour Djan Kwasi as well as other prominent citizens of the area.
The Omanhene said such establishments had become necessary because Koforidua, headquarters of the paramountcy as well as the Eastern Regional capital and the most populous in the region does not have a girls senior high school.
The already existing rural banks in the town, the Omanhene said have not been able to satisfy the needs of the numerous traders with loans.
The Omanhene explained that he had decided to establish the rural bank in view of the fact that many people within the paramountcy were in dire need of soft loans to establish micro businesses.
That, Daasebre Kwaku Boateng said would relieve the people from securing loans from money lenders and other sources with high interest rates that would not be in the interest of the people.
He said the bank should engage consultants to develop business plans for all those interested in acquiring loans for their businesses to enable them to succeed.
Mr Otchere-Darko urged New Juaben citizens both at home and ub the diaspora to support the Omanhene’s transformation agenda.
The Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong said the government had decided to partner the New Juaben Paramountcy to revive the Akwantukese Festival to be one of the best in the country.
The festival is celebrated at specific periods of the year to mark the migration of the people of New Juaben from Juaben in the Ashanti Region to their present abode at Koforidua in the Eastern Region.
Medals and trophies were also presented to winners of the Daasebre Table Tennis competition held on Thursday, December 22, at the forecourt of the Yiadom Hwedie Palace.
The New Juaben Table Tennis Club also presented a citation to Daasebre Kwaku Boateng for his commitment to developing the sport in Koforidua.
South Florida radio station WZPP posted on Instagram that it had confirmed Jo Mersa’s passing and said he died of an asthma attack, though it did not specify a location where it happened.
It noted that the singer leaves behind a wife and daughter.

His grandfather was a pioneer in the reggae movement and known for songs including “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright,” “Get Up, Stand Up,” “Is This Love,” “I Shot the Sheriff,” “No Woman, No Cry” and more.
Bob Marley died in 1981 of melanoma at only 36. He had 11 children with seven different women.
Stephen Marley additionally has a daughter, Mystic Marley, who is also a musician. Stephen’s siblings include musician Ziggy Marley and entrepreneur Rohan Marley.
Jo Mersa spent his early years in Jamaica before he moved to Florida in high school. He studied studio engineering at Miami Dade College, according to a 2014 Jamaica Observer story.
In a 2021 interview with the Jamaica Gleaner, timed to his second EP “Eternal” — which featured Melii, Black-Am-I, Busy Signal and Kabaka Pyramid — Jo Mersa opened up about his songwriting prowess.
“In all honesty, it depends on the vibe because sometimes you will have a tune or idea, like a whole tune is in your head but no beat, and other times, you have a beat and no tune,” he said. “That’s for me, of course. I can’t speak for everyone. Some songs I am able to finish in a night, and some take longer.”
In the 2014 Jamaica Observer story, he suggested that following in his father’s footsteps was challenging.
“My father has created a legacy by putting out songs with meaning,” he said. “It’s something I have to live up to.”
He did claim in another interview, though, that there was “no pressure” to live up to his last name.
“There’s things that you have to overcome and things you just have to do and that’s how it is. We have to go through life you know? There’s no pressure for me,” he told the entertainment site the Pier that same year. “I give thanks for being a Marley. I’m very appreciative and thankful that I am born where I am born and put where God has decided. I’m very thankful about it and proud.”
He also opened up about his grandfather’s legacy in 2021, saying that his family often looked back on it year after year on the anniversary of his death.
“We always hear those reflections, speaking about those things, about the role that he played not only as family member and father, but also in the world and the impact he had on the Reggae community and the Reggae culture, the roots, bringing forward the message of Rastafari and love, over all love,” he told Reggaeville.
One person has been arrested for deliberately destroying billboards advertising Safare Tissues in prime areas of Accra.
This arrest follows concerns that there have coordinated and consistent attempts by other rival companies to sabotage the visibility of the products of Tissue production company by the destruction of their billboards by unknown persons.
In less than a fortnight, a Safare billboard at the Tetteh Quarshie interchange had been pulled down at dawn by unknown individuals
This was followed a week later by a similar incident at the Accra mall section of the motorway.
It has emerged that other billboards on the same locations were not touched but Safare Tissues billboards became the targets, giving credence to suspicions that the acts were orchestrated.
In the ensuing melee, reports suggest luck run out on one of the persons who was arrested and upon interrogation mentioned that elements in another tissue company as being behind it.
Quite recently on a TV3 platform where Safare had acquired sponsorship over the Delay show, viewers may recall that on that particular slot for Safare, Flora Tissues adverts popped up suddenly when indeed they had no slot.
Technicians later apologised for it and claimed it was an error on their part to have played another company’s advert on Safare’s slot.
Safare Tissues has gained great penetration onto the market as a very reliable product and this appears to have ruffled the feathers of other industry players who are bent on sabotaging the company.
The 16-year-old forward has agreed to join LaLiga and European champions Madrid from Palmeiras in July 2024.
Endrick had been linked with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea before opting to make the move to the Spanish capital in a deal that could reportedly be worth €70million.
Fellow Brazilian Vinicius and Madrid’s all-time leading goalscorer Ronaldo influenced the teenager’s decision to make the switch to Los Blancos.
He told Marca: “Real Madrid is a very big team, and Vini had sent me messages and gave me more hope.
“Cristiano, who is my idol, also played for Real Madrid. That’s why I chose Real Madrid and I think it’s the right choice. God has always been with me and he has told me that it is the best way.”
Carlo Ancelotti also convinced Endrick that joining Madrid was his best option.
“Yes, I spoke with Ancelotti, with Rodrygo, with Eder [Militao], with the Brazilians,” he said.
“I thank God very much for everything that happens in my life and I hope that many good things still come, but you have to keep your feet on the ground, have humility and persevere.”
The budget was rejected by the trade, industry, and tourist committee of parliament, which was made up of members of the minority party.
A member of the committee, Mr. Yussif Sulemana, told journalists on Tuesday, December 20, 2022: “I can tell you on authority that at the end of the day, we had to vote, and after the vote, the minority carried the day. We have voted against it, and we are saying that this is not the time for us to be spending that huge sum of money on building a cathedral.”
The Bole-Bamboi MP said: “Apart from that, we were told at the committee [-level] that they had already spent GHC 339 million, and when we asked them to give us evidence of how the money was spent, it was a challenge.”
Again, he noted, “we were told that they have moved the cathedral from wherever it was to the ministry of tourism. And the question I put to them was that that organisation that is handling this cathedral, the secretariat, is it under the ministry of tourism?
“If it’s not under the ministry of tourism, then it means that you want to use the ministry as a conduit to send the money wherever you want to send it and we, the minority, will not accept it.”
She told Accra-based Joy FM: “It does not mean the project cannot go on because I know you are going to bring your money and I will bring mine and everybody that we will approach and is willing will bring theirs.”
She added: “Really, those who are willing are the people making the money available for the construction. I think we should all keep calm and not be disturbed.”
“People have said that there has not been transparency, but every year in the budget there has been some seed money not taken from what I understand from the Contingency Fund, but I heard there’s something called Contingency Vote,” she said.
Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, a few weeks ago, said he did not breach the law when he drew funds from the contingency vote to sponsor the construction of the national cathedral.
He told the ad hoc committee hearing seven allegations against him for which the minority caucus filed a censure motion: “National cathedral is 100 per cent owned by the state and is not the president’s cathedral as described by the proponents.”
“Expenditures in respect of the national cathedral were made from the contingency vote under the other government obligations vault as has been the practice before my tenure,” Mr Ofori-Atta explained.
“I have several copies of payments from the contingency vote dating back to 2015 to share,” he added.
“Honourable co-chairs, as finance minister, I am fully aware of the approval procedures for use of the contingency funds and I have not breached its requirements,” he added on Friday, 18 November 2022.
Below is Mr Ofori-Atta’s full response in connection with the national cathedral funding:
The ground of the Proponents claiming that there has been “Unconstitutional withdrawals from the Consolidated Fund in blatant contravention of Article 178 of the 1992 Constitution supposedly for the construction of the President’s Cathedral,” I submit as follows:
Hon. Co-Chairs, let me first submit, that I am uncomfortable about the formulation of this ground. It presupposes that Parliament is assuming the jurisdiction to enforce and/interpret a provision of the Constitution, against the combined effect of articles 2(1) and 130(1), which grants the sole and exclusive power to the Supreme Court. Nonetheless, I say with both humility and confidence that I have not breached the Constitution in making payments to support the construction of the National Cathedral of Ghana.
Hon. Co-Chairs, three days ago, when the Proponents were here, they alleged that I had made payments from the Contingency Fund to support the National Cathedral. I want to state that this is just not true. Let me be categorical. I have taken no money from the Contingency Fund to make payments for the National Cathedral.
It appears the proponents have confused the Contingency Fund with the Contingency Vote. Let me explain. There is a difference between Contingency Fund and Contingency Vote.
The Contingency Fund, the Proponents refer to, is what is covered under the Constitution, specifically under article 177. This constitutes money voted by Parliament and advances from this must be authorised by the Parliamentary Finance Committee. The Contingency Vote, on the other hand, is a line under the “Other Government Obligations” vote which is approved by the Finance Committee and passed as part of the annual Appropriation Acts passed by Parliament.
Hon. Co-Chairs, in preparing the Annual Budgets, the practice is that provision is made for indicative expenditures that have not been fully costed at the time of the Budget presentation. Provisions are made in the Contingency Vote to cater for such expenditures. For example, in 2014, there was no specific allocation in the 2014 budget for Ghana’s participation in the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The Cabinet of President John Mahama, in March 2014, at the time, approved some $9.622 million for that tournament, including that amount which was flown to Brazil in a private jet for the players. A more current example is Ghana’s participation in Qatar. The Black Stars qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, way after the 2022 budget, presented on 16 November 2021, was approved by Parliament. No specific amount was budgeted for it but through the Contingency Vote, we have been able to provide funds legitimately for the team to participate in the competition.
Expenditures in respect of the National Cathedral were made from the Contingency Vote under the “Other Government Obligations” vote as has been the practice before my tenure (I have copies of several payments from the Contingency Vote dating back to 2015 to share). Hon. Co-Chairs, as Finance Minister, I am fully aware of the approval procedures for use of the Contingency Fund and have not breached its requirement.
The National Cathedral is 100% owned by the State and is not the President’s Cathedral as described by the Proponents. Indeed, the Attorney General issued an opinion on 6th January 2022, that the National Cathedral is a state-owned company limited by guarantee, under the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board.
Hon. Co-Chairs, the policy direction and updates on the National Cathedral have been publicly presented over the years through the National Budget Statement and Economic Policy presented to Parliament.
In paragraph 156 of my Budget Speech on the 2019 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, I announced on the floor of Parliament, Government’s vision for the National Cathedral as well as the commitment to facilitate the construction by providing the land, the Secretariat, and seed money. This subject was part of the policy approval of the Budget after extensive debate.
Subsequently, regular updates on the progress of the construction of the National Cathedral have been provided to Parliament and the nation. These include:
2020 Budget Statement and Economic Policy – Paragraph 385: which announced the establishment of the Board of Trustees and Secretariat for the Cathedral.
Mid-Year Review of the 2020 Budget Statement – Paragraph 279: which provided an update on the ground-breaking ceremony held on 5th March 2020 to mark the formal commencement of the construction phase of the project.
2021 Budget Statement and Economic Policy – Paragraphs 1132 and 1134: which informed the House of the Letter of Intent (LoI) signed on 25th November 2020 between NCG Trustees and RIBADE JV (led by Rizzanni de Eccher with M Barbisotti & Sons and Desimone. And, the Appointment of Apostle Prof. Opoku-Onyinah as the new Chairman of the Board of Trustees on 8th February 2021.
Mid-Year Review of the 2021 Budget Statement – Paragraphs 354 and 355: which announced the expansion of the Cathedral project to include a Bible Museum (Bible Museum of Africa – BMOA) and Biblical Garden; as well as
the establishment of the 100-Cedis-a-Month “Ketewa Biara Nsua” Club, in line with the original plan to encourage as many donors as possible to contribute towards the establishment of this national monument.
In conclusion, Co-Chairs, all the payments made for the National Cathedral were lawfully done and from the Contingency Vote under the “Other Government Obligations” vote and not from the Contingency Fund as alleged by the Proponents.
Liverpool have made the first significant move in the January sales, confirming the signing of winger Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven for an initial fee of £35million.
The versatile Dutch forward, 23, has signed a long-term deal that runs from January 1 to the summer of 2028.
Gakpo caught the eye during the Qatar World Cup, scoring in all three of the Netherlands’ group games while being utilised as a striker.
He has also been a standout performer in the Eredivisie this season, scoring nine goals and providing 12 assists for PSV in just 14 league games.
West Ham, Nottingham Forest and Wolves are among others who have started shopping early as clubs look to get their business done before the 11pm deadline on Tuesday, January 31.
The Irons have confirmed a deal is in place to sign Brazilian defender Luizao, 20, from Sao Paulo.
The promising young centre-back’s move is subject to international clearance, with a contract agreed up to the summer of 2026.
It is likely he will spend the rest of this season finding his feet in the development squad under Mark Robson.
Forest fans have already had a sneak peek of another Brazilian import, Gustavo Scarpa, who has flown in from Palmeiras.
The attacking midfielder, who turns 29 in January, made some cameo appearances in Forest’s mid-season friendlies and set up the winning goal for Emmanuel Dennis in a 2-1 victory over Valencia.
Wolves have also dipped their toe into the market by taking forward Matheus Cunha on loan from Atletico Madrid.
Subject to a work permit, 23-year-old Cunha is the first signing for new manager Julen Lopetegui at Molineux.
Should certain clauses be triggered, the Brazil international’s switch will be made permanent and run until 2027.
Grealish, 27, arrived at the Etihad for £100million in August 2021 and won the Premier League in his first season but has struggled to impress on a regular basis.
The former Aston Villa man grabbed two assists as the champions returned to Premier League action with a 3-1 win over Leeds last night.
But his tally since joining City stands at only four goals and five assists in 35 league appearances.
The report indicates Pep Guardiola is willing to let the England international leave in favour of bringing Leao in.
The Rossoneri winger is one of Serie A’s most in-demand talents after notching seven goals and nine assists in 20 games this term, as well as two strikes for Portugal at the World Cup.
And the former Sporting and Lille star has admitted he is open to a move to the Premier League in the future.
On whether a move to the English top flight attracts him, he said: “Yes, in the future.
“But now, I’m 100% focused on Milan. I’m at a top club and I’m under contract. I also like the city.”
Manchester City are reportedly willing to offer record signing Jack Grealish to land Rafael Leao
He responded to a Bloomberg article headlined “Why Ghana from Hero to Zero for Investors,” which was the source of his information.
According to Bloomberg, “Ghana, once an example of economic stability in Africa, has ceased to make interest payments on its foreign debt. How did things get so bad off course?
“Ghana is learning the hard way why oil can be a blessing and a curse. The onset of commercial crude production helped turn the West African nation into one of the continent’s top investment destinations but also prompted successive governments to borrow to the hilt. Skittish investors offloaded Ghana’s bonds and currency, the cedi, amid doubts over its ability to settle its debts.
“The concern proved to be well-founded: In December, the government caught bondholders by surprise by unilaterally suspending interest payments on its external debt ahead of restructuring talks aimed at pinning down a $3 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund,” it added.
Ghana has announced a debt exchange programme that is calling on domestic bondholders to exchange their bonds for fresh ones with new maturity dates.
The government also suspended debt payments for external debts. It is however seeking to get financial support from the International Monetary Fund. The government reached a staff-level agreement with the IMF awaiting approval from its board.
A United States-based Ghanaian practicing medical doctor, Dr.Arthur Kobina Kennedy has counselled Ghanaians on their health and well-being.
Dr. Arthur Kennedy in a New Year message on December 26 to Ghanaians, advised that the huge sizes of carbohydrate meals such as kenkey, ‘banku’, ‘fufu’ and ‘akple’ should be reduced for more consumption of fruits and vegetables.
He said excessive alcohol intake must also be cut down adding that Ghanaians should be cautious about the use of illegal drugs.
“In our contest, we must also watch our diet. The size of the ‘fufu’, ‘akple’, ‘banku’ should be reduced and when they are reduced and replaced with fruits and vegetables and others they are good for the body,” he advised.
He called for more visitations to Physician assistants to ensure a proper state of health and wellness and for Ghanaians to be able to maintain the required normal levels of blood pressure and sugar.
Dr. Arthur Kennedy also cautioned about the usage of herbs with no prior medical information.
“Whiles some of them (herbs) can heal, they have side effects that are sometimes dangerous. A lot of kidney problems and others relayed from herbs whose dosages we do not know and that we use so let us be careful of those herbs,” he said in a recorded video on December 26.
He further urged persons with bitter relationships with families and friends to as part of their new year resolutions reconcile with their friends and loved ones.
“These days we have become more centered on ourselves and therefore more unhappy. There is an epidemic of loneliness, there is too much of me versus we. So respectively, I urge you as part of your New Year resolutions to nurture your old relationships and to rekindle ones that have gone cold between you and your family members, like children, spouses, distant relatives and friends,” he admonished.
The United States-based Ghanaian practicing medical doctor implored Ghanaians to reach out to old friends who they have not seen or heard from in a while and avoid the Western practice of just relating to nuclear families and take pride in the extended family.
The Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP government owes Ghanaians an apology, and an explanation for abandoning mid-stream, a promise made to the people of Ghana.
The current NPP government promised to, and restored a diluted form of teacher trainee allowance. And they assured Ghanaians, that they will not reintroduce the Quota System that restricted more teachers from being trained. They have since made a U-turn.
As evident in the leaked GTEC letter to the Principals of Colleges of Education, the cardinal reason for the introduction of the admission Quota System for Public Colleges of Education for the 2022/2023 academic year, is due to government’s inability to fund the feeding grant and allowances for as many who qualify and want to train as teachers.
The GTEC letter – with the list of allocations per College – dated December 16, 2022, states categorically, that allocations to various Colleges cannot be varied and must be adhered to. The letter added, that “for the avoidance of doubt, payment of feeding grants and trainee allowances will be guided by these numbers.”
On the face of the allocations list attached to the GTEC letter to the Principals of the Colleges of Education, the highest number allocated to a College is 320 students, while the lowest number is 160 students. Based on the list of allocations given, the impact of this sudden policy change is reflected in the fact, that only a paltry 12,002 prospective teacher trainees will be admitted into the 46 Colleges of Education for the 2022/2023 academic year. This means 260 students per College on average, a clear waste of space, and an obvious hindrance to training more and much needed teachers.
So no doubt, that the Quota System announced for admission will prevent many prospective applicants from getting admission into Colleges of Education. And this is bound to have negative consequences. With thousands of qualified applicants chasing few spaces, partisan-influenced protocol admissions and the ‘whom-you-know’ syndrome will deny many qualified and worthy applicants who truly desire to become teachers a fair opportunity to gain admission.
Below are two reasons, culled, courtesy citinewsroom.com, which I believe, justify my call on government to apologise to Ghanaians for the U-turn as far as the promise to pay trainee allowances and still allow as many who qualify to train as teachers to do so.
Evidently the reintroduction of the Quota System has badly exposed the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP government as captured in the words of the then Minister of State in Charge of Tertiary Education:
1) “Professor Kwesi Yankah, then Minister of State in Charge of Tertiary Education in 2017, said Colleges of Education could admit as many qualified applicants as their available facilities can allow but without compromising quality and standards.”
2) “He insisted that the Ministry of Education under the Akufo-Addo government will not introduce a Quota System for admission which could prevent many prospective applicants from getting admission into teacher training colleges.
From the foregoing, it smacks of dishonesty when the same government that made a promise to win an election has turned back on its words, and is now doing what was not even close to what it condemned to win election 2016.
I strongly insist that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP government has an obligation to tell Ghanaians the justification for the reintroduction of a Quota System they promised not to introduce, and admitted will close the door to many prospective teachers.
Hull City manager Liam Rosenior has confirmed that Ghana striker Benjamin Tetteh is a couple of weeks away from returning to first team training after more than four months out with a hamstring injury.
Tetteh sustained the injury in the defeat to Sheffield United and his absence has been a huge blow for the club.
The 25-year-old could not make Ghana’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar due to the injury, having been nmaed in the provisional list for the tournament.
“He’s still a couple of weeks away, but he’s back in training and we’ll manage his load to make sure that he’s up to speed,” Rosenior said of Tetteh.
“It’s great for me to see him in the flesh and I’m really looking forward to having him as part of the group again.
The Ghanaian returned to training on Christmas Eve having stepped up his fitness work during the club’s mid-season training camp in Antalya, and is expected to be available for selection midway through January, providing there are no setbacks for the striker.
Tetteh has made nine appearances for Hull City this season in all competitions and provided three assists in the process.
According to a market survey by Ghana News Agency, shoppers and merchants have expressed dissatisfaction with the cost of goods for the next holiday season, some of which have experienced price increases of more than threefold from 2021.
The places visited included Makola, Tudu, Malata, Nima, Agbogbloshie, Dome, Kaneshie, Madina, Adabraka and Konkomba markets, where traders tried to attract people to their wares with enticing words, some in the form of songs.
It was noted that the prices of food items, including rice, cooking oil, vegetables, and frozen chicken as well as Christmas decorations – trees, wreath, ribbons, ‘Santa hat,’ had either doubled or tripled compared to the same period last year.
Similarly, the prices of lace fabrics, clothes, shoes, bags, dresses, hampers, and jewelleries, which are heavily patronised during festive season had equally seen a sharp rise, compared to the same period last year.
For example, the price of a five-kilogramme rice, which ranged between GHS45 and GHS60 last year, sold between GHS80 and GHS125, while a five-litre cooking oil, which was sold for GHS70 – GHS80 last year, was GHS270 and GHS280.
In 2021, a local chicken breed cost as much as GHS50, but one needed about GHS100 for the same this year, while the imported breed, sold between GHS50 and GHS70 within the period, now went for GHS170 and GHS220.
For vegetables, a full basket of fresh tomatoes, which was sold at GHS35 last year, was GHS50 and a small basket of onion, which was GHS25, going for GHS50.
The prices of goods and services have been on the rise since the beginning of the year, a situation, the traders attributed to hikes in fuel prices (which recently saw a 15.3 per cent reduction), inflation (currently, 50.3 per cent) and depreciation of the Cedi.
The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) had earlier warned of soaring prices of goods and services for the yuletide due to the unfavourable trade environment.
Madam Afia Konadu, who sold vegetables, said the prices of vegetables had increased this time because of the high inflation rate and the depreciation of the cedi.
Sharing the same a sentiment, Mad Naa Akorkor added that the fare for transporting food stuff from the hinterlands to the cities had increased, forcing them to increase their prices to stay in business.
Mr Olu Okafor, a jeweller, said: “The prices of jewelleries have increased from five to 15 per cent due to the Christmas festivities, and we have no option than to add something to it so that we can get money to go for them.”
“I’ve been moving from one place to the other since I came to the market to get some moderate price, but to no avail. I’m not sure the money I brought could get me the things I planned for,” a shopper said.
Few days back, the Cedi started appreciating against the dollar, leading to a decline in fuel and transport prices, which both traders and consumers said, they expected would lead to some reduction in goods and services

UK-based Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) who made the projection added that it expects the exchange-rate weakness to continue into 2023, albeit to a lesser degree.
“Most African currencies have lost substantial value against the US dollar during 2022 and we expect exchange-rate weakness to continue into 2023, albeit to a lesser degree,” myjoyonline quoted the EIU.
However, the EIU noted that the currencies of the troubled states of Sudan and Zimbabwe will be among the weakest in the world during 2023.
Also, Ghana, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, and Egypt—” which will all suffer from elevated rates of inflation—will see their currencies depreciate by more than 10% against the US dollar.”
African powerhouses of Nigeria, South Africa, Angola, Algeria, and Kenya will not be exempted from the currency weakness and will experience further depreciation of their currencies against the US dollar in 2023.
The Zambian kwacha which is currently the strongest on the continent has been projected to continue its performance as Africa’s best-performing currency in 2023 with an appreciation of about 8% in value to the American greenback.
The Kwacha will be followed by Burkina Faso’s CFA and Cameroon’s which are all expected to appreciate against the US dollar.
English Premier League giants Manchester United are eyeing a move for Ghana and Ajax midfielder Mohammed Kudus in the January transre window, according to Manchester Evening News.
Erik ten Hag is determine to reunite with Kudus after the pair worked together at Ajax for only one season.
The Red Devils considered signing Cody Gakpo from PSV but the Netherlands international has opted to join Liverpool. The club has also been linked with a move for several forwards including Atletico Madrid ace Joao Felix and Gonçalo Ramos of Benfica.
Kudus is attracting interest from several clubs across Europe following his impressive performances for Ajax this season.
The 22-year-old has scored 10 goals and provided two assists in 21 appearances in all competitions.
Kudus has netted five goals in 14 Eredivisie appearances this campaign, while bagging four goals and providing two assists in six Champions League games.
Premier League sides Liverpool and Newcastle United have also been linked with a move, while Everton are also believed to still be in the running, having come close to signing him over the summer.
He was one of the standout players for Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, scoring twice in three appearances as the Black Stars exited the group stage after finishing bottom of their Group.
Universities that are charging illegal tuition have been encouraged by the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) to change their minds and abide by the 15% standard.
Among the institutions they mentioned were the University of Ghana (UG), the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the University of Mines and Technology (UMAT), the University of Cape Coast (UCC), the University of Education-Winneba (UEW), and the University of Health and Allied Sciences.
While the above institutions are said to have broken the 15% threshold, some institutions such as the University of Development Studies(UDS), and the Ghana Institute of Journalism(GIJ) among others were praised by the Union for charging the 15%.
Addressing the media in Accra on Wednesday, President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Dennis Appiah Larbi-Ampofo, said the union finds it difficult to believe that the above institutions are charging as much as 100% increments while on December 16, 2022, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission wrote to all stakeholders setting the threshold for any increment at 15%.
He said the approval is “applicable to all public tertiary institutions (public universities, technical universities, colleges of education) under GTEC.”
He argued that any attempt to increase fees above the stated threshold will be in contempt of Parliament adding that all institutions who “have illegally increased fees beyond the threshold to immediately reverse such increment.
He, however, called on all students both freshers and continuing students to desist from paying any unauthorized fees.
Former Ajax manager, Adriaan de Mos has advised Alfred Schreuder on how to get the best out of Mohammed Kudus.
Aad de Mos believes the Ghana international has been largely played out of position this season.
And according to the veteran manager, Kudus is best fit in the number 10 role where he can create and score as well.
“I think there is one position where he can work well. That is the position he also played in Ghana. This boy wants to work, move and get into the box with the ball. That’s a nice thing, but he shouldn’t be the victim of tactical experiments.” he told SoccerNews.nl.
“It is now, as a false number 9. That boy does it, but he is not really. My advice is to set him up as 10 and leave Brobbey at 9. You get two good players in return,” he added.
Kudus has been attracting interest from several clubs ahead of the winter transfer window, but de Mos has advised the Dutch champions against selling the midfielder.
“I would not sell Kudus. It will only increase in value if he gets the chance to play matches in a row at Ajax. If you don’t have the confidence of a coach, it’s very annoying for a player,” he continued.
“He got the confidence in Ghana and then he is one of the most striking players of the World Cup,” De Mos adds. “He has already shown it at Ajax in matches against Liverpool and Rangers. Then he is always there and shows his best side.”
Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Everton and other top European sides are all interested in the 22-year-old.
A powerful winter storm that slammed North America has claimed more lives in the US state of New York, local officials say.
At least 34 people have died in Erie County, which includes the city of Buffalo, county executive Mark Poloncarz said on Wednesday.
Authorities are still trying to identify three of the victims.
The storm that swept across the US over the holiday weekend has killed at least 60 people in eight states.
There have now been more fatalities in Erie County in the last few days than during the infamous Buffalo blizzard of 1977. Twenty-nine people died in that storm, according to the National Weather Service.
“It’s a horrible storm with too many deaths,” Mr Poloncarz said during a press conference on Wednesday morning.
But conditions in some of the hardest-hit regions in the US – including New York – are starting to improve.
In Erie County, fewer than 1,000 households are now without power, and 95% of residents should have power restored by the end of the day, Mr Poloncarz said.
The city of Buffalo – which got more than four feet (1.2m) of snow – has made progress clearing roads, county officials said. At least 65% of city streets have at least one lane available for passage, though a driving ban remains in effect due to dangerous conditions, Mr Poloncarz said.
The local Buffalo Niagara International Airport reopened at 11:00 local time (16:00 GMT) after closing last Friday, though nearly all scheduled departing flights for the day were cancelled or delayed, according to the airport’s website.
Buffalo’s rail service is running again on a limited schedule.
The US National Guard is going door-to-door in neighbourhoods in the county that lost power to conduct wellness checks as officials are “fearful” that some living alone may have perished during the storm, Mr Poloncarz said.
With temperatures rising and snow beginning to melt, the county is now preparing for the possibility of flooding, the county executive said.
Elsewhere in the US and Canada, residents are still dealing with the effects of the deadly winter storm as well as new dangerous weather systems, which have caused several fatalities.
States in the western US and the Rocky Mountains region have experienced heavy winds and rain as a result of an “atmospheric river”, a long narrow channel of moisture in the atmosphere that can cause heavy precipitation.
A surge of heavy rain or mountain snow is expected on the west and the US south on Thursday and could continue through the end of the week, according to the Weather Prediction Center.
The system on Tuesday began flooding the western states of Washington and Oregon, where five people died in car crashes as a result of felled trees from the storm, Oregon State Police told local media outlets.
In one instance, Oregon State Police said the severe weather caused a large tree to fall onto the roof of a car on Highway 26 in Clatsop County on Tuesday, killing the 19-year-old driver Justin Nolasco Pedraza and two passengers – a four-year-old child and 41-year-old Bonifacio Olvera Nolasco. First responders found all three dead at the scene.
More than 70,000 customers were without power in Washington and Oregon as of Wednesday afternoon, according to outage tracker PowerOutage.us.
The storm is expected to “linger into the upcoming weekend”, the Weather Prediction Center said.
Some areas could get up to six inches (15 cm) of rainfall.
The Washington state capital of Olympia saw a record high tide of 18.4 feet (5.6 metres), which brought marine life into the city’s streets, according to officials.
A local journalist shared videos on Twitter of jellyfish in flooded city streets and of a local resident who was trying to rescue the animals.
Heavy snow is also forecast for the mountainous regions of Sierra Nevada, Cascades and the Rockies as moist air flows eastward, the Weather Prediction Center said.
Some Canadian residents, meanwhile, are still battling power cuts as a result of the storm, including about 19,000 customers in the province of Quebec, public utility provider Hydro-Québec said on Wednesday.
In Ontario, more than 10,000 customers were still without power, according to power supplier Hydro One.
Black Galaxies were back at the training grounds on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, a day after beating Egypt’s U-20 side 2-0 in a friendly match played behind closed doors.
The session saw coach Annor Walker divide the players into two groups with those who played less than 60 minutes in the friendly game going through an intensive training session.
Players who played more than 60 minutes also had a recovery session at the training grounds.
The team will continue its regular daily training sessions on Thursday and Friday.
The Black Galaxies are however expected to take on an Egyptian Premier League side in a friendly game on Saturday, December 31 as part of preparations for the CHAN tournament.
The team has been in Egypt since last weekend as they step up preparations for the competition which will be staged in Algeria from January 13-February 4, 2023.
Ghana make a return to the CHAN tournament for the first time since 2014 when they lost on penalties to Libya in the final match.
Ghana are in Group C alongside Madagascar, Sudan and Morocco.
After releasing his much-talked-about song, “Ofon Na 3di As3m fo” legendary musician Daddy Lumba born Charles Kwadwo Fosu says he is not yet done with that individual (Ofon).
Immediately after the release of the Christmas banger, many Ghanaians and music critics took to social media to analyse and try to find out what Daddy Lumba actually wanted to communicate and who in particular he was referring to.
But speaking in an interview with DL FM monitored by MyNewsGH.com, Daddy Lumba insisted that, “that useless individual who is misbehaving we are not done dealing with him”.
Daddy Lumba showing appreciation to his die-hard fans on live radio stressed that, “I thank everybody. What I would say before leaving here is that, may Good bless our country Ghana you have showed me true love. If thousands hate me, I know that thousands also love me but that useless individual who is misbehaving we are not done dealing with him.”
T.J. Holmes and his estranged wife Marilee Fiebig are calling it quits.
TMZ is reporting the Good Morning America host filed documents Wednesday in New York City. The timing comes after Holmes and his GMA co-host and now romantic partner Amy Robach were spotted traveling together at the Atlanta airport just after the holiday weekend.
It’s been a whirlwind month for Holmes after his relationship with Robach went public. They made headlines after Daily Mail published a series of photos of them flirting and spending time together. Despite the news, they still went on to host GMA but were taken off the air shortly after.
Twitter had a field day with the photos, believing Holmes had an alleged affair. It was later confirmed by sources they were in a serious relationship, but it happened after they were separated from their spouses. Page Six reports the romance began brewing while the pair were training for the New York City Half Marathon.
Holmes has been married to Fiebig since 2010. They welcomed a baby daughter in 2013.

Helen hasn’t spoken with her son in more than a year. The last she heard, he was in prison. Now aged 31, he’s been addicted to opioids for more than a decade.
“He’s tried to call me, probably to ask for money, and I have not been picking up,” explains Helen, who lives in England. “Right now, that’s the right decision for my safety and sanity.” As the primary caregiver for her son’s young daughter, Helen’s focus is providing a loving and secure environment for her to grow up in.
Helen remembers her son as an impulsive and destructive child, but with a wicked sense of humour and a kind heart. So, she was confused when, as a teenager, “his behaviour turned hostile and he started locking himself in the toilet for hours at a time”, she recalls. “When I confronted him, he’d tell me I was the mad one, the one on drugs. Sometimes, I wanted to laugh, it was so ridiculous.”
When Helen found out he was using heroin, she didn’t know where to turn. He would disappear for days, returning with all kinds of injuries. When he was at home, he was difficult to be around. “He never hit me, but would often destroy the flat in anger – there’s still a hole in the corridor where he kneed it,” she explains.
At work, she was paid in cash, which she says her son began taking from her wallet. Not wanting to say anything in case he got violent, she began keeping the money in a belt around her waist. “I said my earnings were going straight into an account so I could get a better credit rating,” she says. She ultimately felt unsafe living with someone deep in an addiction, and cut contact with him.
The relationship between a parent and their child is expected to be lifelong – a fruitful, loving bond that can survive any highs and lows. However, for some parents, maintaining this connection can be difficult. Eventually, a parent might feel they have reached a point of no return, and so choose to step away from their role.

In an increasingly polarised world, conversations about children who stop speaking to their parents have become common. Yet it also happens the other way around, even if the discourse is less frequent. This may be in part because data indicates parents severing ties with their children is rarer: a 2015 study conducted by the British estrangement charity Stand Alone showed that 5% of estranged parents had initiated it themselves.
The decision is already difficult and painful, and those who experience this estrangement say its relative rarity makes it especially isolating, and can add to stigma for those who choose to pursue this path.
‘Unconditional love can be problematic’
“In both research and popular culture, we rarely hear from parents who estrange themselves from their children because it’s so taboo, and there are very few non-judgemental places to speak openly about the experience,” explains Lucy Blake, a senior lecturer in psychology at University of the West England, Bristol, who specialises in estrangement.
The reasons parents end relationships with their children are similar to the reasons kids cut off their parents: according to Blake, among the most common cited are family conflict, differences in personal values (such as religious beliefs), substance abuse and other toxic behaviour. The Stand Alone research showed that for relationship breakdowns with sons, issues linked to divorce, in-laws and marriage were the most widely reported drivers; while with daughters, mental-health problems and emotional abuse were more common.
Yet this decision to fracture with children tends to be far more trying and ultimately difficult. Societally, parents are expected to cherish and care for offspring without exception. “We have very high, almost godlike expectations of a parent, where we want them to be unconditionally loving,” explains Blake. “This can be quite problematic, as it suggests they should accept any kind of treatment, including all kinds of psychological and financial abuse.”
This is perhaps why, even when their children are hurting them, parents struggle to let go. Jennifer Storey, a psychology lecturer at the University of Kent, UK, who specialises in interpersonal violence, finds that in most of her interviews with victims of elder abuse, parents are still worried and sad for their children. “I am struggling to remember one parent who really wanted to cut their child off – they almost always wanted the relationship to continue, but the abuse to end,” she explains.
It can also be hard for both them and the people around them to accept the reality of what’s happening. “Parents are assumed to have all the power, but as the child grows older, that power dynamic shifts,” says Amanda Holt, author of the book Adolescent-to-Parent Abuse: Current Understandings in Research, Policy and Practice. “The lack of belief that child-parent abuse can happen, or that it can be so bad a parent needs to leave, is another reason that it’s so difficult to walk away.”
The “intergenerational stake hypothesis” may also be at work. This theory suggests that parents are typically more invested – emotionally, financially and physically – in the parent-child relationship than their children. Greater positive ties with children are associated with a parent’s improved wellbeing, a greater quality of life and lower depressive symptoms; greater positive ties with a parent do not guarantee the same benefits. This means that the parent’s choice to sever contact with a child, whether abruptly or gradually, doesn’t just come with the weight of failure.
“Parenthood is a role and identity that’s respected and admired – it’s also life-changing and lifelong,” explains Blake. “When a parent does not have an active relationship with their child, they might feel they have failed in this role, bringing feelings of intense pain and shame, changing or challenging how parents think about themselves and who they are.”
Given these elements, it can be more challenging for parents to sever ties than it is for children. “It could certainly be a different kind of pain, because for parents, there’s the possibility that their life seems emptier or less meaningful,” says Blake. Many will lose friendships and relationships with other family members as a result. “The loss and pain that accompanies estrangement ripples out to touch many different aspects of people’s lives,” says Blake.

Murky and muddled
In some cases, like Helen’s, the decision to cut off contact is clearly made by one party. But the source of estrangement between parents and children can often be more muddled.
Jack, who lives in the US, was married to his wife for nearly two decades, during which time they had four children together. At the time of the divorce, their youngest daughter was a year old. When his ex-wife remarried, he says, his youngest child gravitated more towards her stepfather than him – and as she grew older, seemed not to enjoy spending time with Jack.
Jack says he reached a breaking point during a visitation when his daughter was aged 14. After a disagreement about curfew, she told Jack she hated her weekends with him, and called her mother for a ride to the event she had planned to attend. “I emailed my ex to say it appeared [my daughter] no longer wanted to spend every other weekend’s visitation with me, and if that were to change in the future, she would be welcomed back with open arms,” says Jack. He doesn’t blame his daughter for acting as she did, but hasn’t heard from or seen her since.
Although his daughter cut off contact initially, Jack hasn’t felt the need to re-kindle contact with her directly. “The longer it has drawn out, it’s lessened my need to re-establish this relationship. It feels similar to a death to me, and I have moved on,” he says. “At this stage of my life, with the comfort level I enjoy in the relationships I have, I doubt I would be interested in the time needed to invest in building a meaningful relationship with her, not to mention the drama from her that would come with that,” he explains.
Jack’s story reflects the murky reality of parent-child estrangement, which is that it’s not always cut-and-dried who drops whom. His daughter made her disinterest in him apparent, but he was the one to actually suggest they stop seeing one another.
This isn’t an uncommon situation, say experts: “For some estranged parents, there’s no one clear answer on who initiated it, and it’s quite messy,” says Blake. When asked who initiated the estrangement (with the options of “they did”, “I did”, “we cut contact with one another” and “I’m not sure”), 10% of respondents in Stand Alone’s community study chose one or more responses, showing that the direction is not always clear.
This is also the case for many parents whose child has an addiction. A 2020 Swedish study showed parents of adult drug addicts remained hopeful about an eventual reconciliation, in part because they were able to see their child as two different people: one sober, and one under the influence. If the latter were to leave, as it were, the relationship could continue.
Helen, for her part, has severed contact with her son several times – they have cycled through periods of estrangement and reconciliation for years. But for now, she is out of touch with him – and unsure what will come next. “If he could show me he was committed to staying clean and out of jail, perhaps I’d want him back in our life,” she explains. “But I don’t know how I could ever trust him again, and certainly not to care for his little one.”
‘A lonely ordeal’
Even for the parents who are steadfast in their reasoning for initiating a break-up, the day-to-day reality of their decision is far from easy. “Configured through biological, legal and social bonds, there is an attachment with one’s child that is very profound,” explains Holt. “Such that if parents do walk away, the relationship may be gone but those bonds persist. It can be very difficult to leave all of that behind.”
Many parents who initiate estrangement find that the shame and blame surrounding their decision also leads to acute isolation, and ruptures with their established support network even beyond blood relatives. “Parents who have initiated estrangement have very few [people] they can talk to who will show compassion and understanding,” explains Blake. “There might be some room for talking about feelings of grief and loss, but it’s as if it runs out and people are expected to get over it and get on with life.”
Jack has fielded discussions with friends who don’t understand his non-relationship with his daughter and say they could never turn their back on a blood relation. “To me, just because someone is ‘blood’ does not give them the right to treat [you] poorly,” he explains.
Compassion and a space to talk may be particularly important at specific moments throughout the calendar year – and this time frame is different for every parent. Wounds feel rawer during the holidays in particular: according to Stand Alone, 90% of people estranged from a family member find holiday seasons challenging, while 85% struggle with the passing of birthdays and 81% find it difficult to be around other families.
For her part, Helen is feeling particularly reflective as Christmas approaches and she shows her granddaughter the Christmas lights. It was something she often did with her son, and she wishes they could share this together.
“I was the only lifeline he had, and dealing with my choice to step away never gets easier,” she says. She feels lucky that her daughter has been so supportive, and six months ago, Helen moved closer to her place so they could see one another regularly. “Without the help and understanding of my daughter, I don’t know where I’d be, as this has been a very lonely ordeal,” she says. “The best I can do is keep myself well so I can do the same for others – I’m trying to take it day by day.”
Ghanaian international, Gideon Kodua has reacted after signing his first professional contract with West Ham United.
The talented winger on Wednesday, December 28, officially inked his first professional deal with the English Premier League club.
Speaking to the media team of West Ham United after the deal was sealed, Gideon Koadu expressed his delight insisting that it is a proud moment for him.
“I’m excited and proud to sign my first professional deal with West Ham United, and I’m really eager to see what the future holds for me now,” the 18-year-old said as quoted on the website of the club.
The talented attacker added, “My time with West Ham United has gone amazing so far and I think, in a way, I’ve shocked myself. But also, in a way, I’ve proven to myself that if I work hard then anything is possible. I’ve kept my head down and worked hard with the coaches here, and I’m proud of what I’ve achieved so far.”
After inking the professional deal, Gideon Kodua has now set sight on working harder to merit chances to play for the first team in the English Premier League.
The policy will obviously fail to accomplish its stated goal, claims ACEP.
The “gold for oil” system solely aims to give politicians influence over the value chain for both gold and oil. Other values cannot be inferred. It goes without saying that other unidentified causes, not gold, will be to blame if cheap oil enters Ghana.
“The government has still not been forthright about the cost of the structure to justify its competitiveness to the current private sector-led approach,” citinewsroom.com quoted Ben Boakye.
He, therefore, lambasted stakeholders and government agencies who are backing the policy.
Ben Boakye also raised concerns over the lack of transparency in the government’s dissemination of information as far as the project is involved.
“Interventions of this magnitude should not leave people in doubt in the interest of good governance and assurance of the international community which has shown significant interest in Ghana’s gold for oil programme,” he added.
He explained that “The government also needs to be cautious and guided by the challenging context of state agencies in the oil and gold business because when these agencies make losses, it is the public that pays, and the energy sector is already inundated with debts because of similar trading abuses. There are no guarantees in the current structure that insulates the public from debt.”
At least 14 people have been killed and 24 others injured after a vehicle ploughed into crowds watching bikers at a popular carnival in Nigeria’s southern port city of Calabar.
Eyewitnesses said that a speeding driver lost control of the car.
Pictures shared online in the immediate aftermath of the incident show bodies strewn across the street.
The month-long annual carnival, which features several events, has become a big draw since it was launched in 2004.
Describing itself as Africa’s biggest street party, it attracts local and foreign tourists throughout December.
This year’s event was special because it was the first since the Covid pandemic, which had forced its cancellation for the last two years.
Tuesday’s incident took place during the popular bikers’ parade on one of the major carnival routes which had been closed to vehicle traffic.
The event features riders including celebrities from across the country, some adorned in colourful costumes, performing stunts.
The police said a drunk driver – who has been arrested – had lost control of their car and ploughed into the crowd.
A father of a 15-year-old boy who was injured in the incident told the BBC that the car was being driven “recklessly”.
“The driver had been swerving from left to right and then when he got to where the crowd stood, he started spraying money on the road. The crowd rushed to pick up the money, which is when the ugly incident took place,” Musa Kutama said.
His son Abdulsalam Musa Kutama survived but with scratches to his face and cuts to his thigh.
The teenager was among 24 people who were rushed to Cross River state’s navy hospital and University of Calabar teaching hospital for treatment.
“We were at the navy hospital last night – they treated him and gave us some drugs, later discharging him. He is currently at home healthy and good,” Mr Kutama said.
A statement from the state’s governor, Professor Ben Ayade, said the government was investigating how the car passed through the many security barricades which barred access to public traffic.
Prof Ayade cancelled the rest of the bikers’ parade but other events planned for the rest of the carnival – which is set to end on New Year’s Eve with a fireworks display – will still go ahead.
The interim manager of the West Ham United academy, Kenny Brown has reacted to Gideon Kodua’s first professional contract with the club.
As announced by your most trusted football portal in the country, the talented England-born Ghanaian teenager on Wednesday signed his first professional deal with the English Premier League side.
Speaking on the deal, Kenny Brown said he can only be happy for the attacker.
“We are delighted to agree professional terms with Gideon. His hard work, application, professionalism and consistency for our senior Academy teams are each worthy of individual mention, and it has been a delight to see him continue to develop,” the Interim West Ham United Academy coach said as quoted by the club.
The gaffer added, “Everyone in the Academy is now eager to see Gideon continue his progression and we all wish him the very best for the remainder of the season and beyond.”
On his part, Gideon Kodua who is proud after inking his deal said he will work harder to repay the club for having faith in him and his abilities.
