  • Bawku clashes: Death toll now 18, dozens flee out of fear

Dozens of people are fleeing troubled Bawku community following renewed chieftaincy issues which have resulted in the death of 18 persons and the destruction of properties running into thousands of cedis within two weeks.

Bawku has been under attack from unknown gunmen forcing the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) to call for more security reinforcement to augment the efforts of officers on the ground.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Bawku, Hamza Amadu said MUSEC will do all it can to protect lives and properties.

“18 people have died so far. People are living in fear following the killings. We are aware of people fleeing the town as a result.”

“But we want to assure residents that we are not sleeping on our jobs. We are doing all we can to protect lives and property.”

Meanwhile, the National Peace Council has urged the two feuding factions in the Bawku ethnic dispute to commit to restoring longstanding peace in the area.

It particularly mentioned the Kusasis to rescind their decision to withdraw from the Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee (BIEPC) in the wake of the ongoing conflict between the Mamprusis and Kusasis in the area.

The Kusasis withdrew from the committee because all efforts to get a solution to the conflict in Bawku have proven futile.

The committee was charged with the responsibility to open up constructive and open dialogue among all people of Bawku.

  • Book 2023: Prince Harry’s Spare kicks off publishing bonanza

Welcome book lovers! It’s that time of year to cosy up and feast your eyes on the luscious literary offerings for the year ahead.

We’ve rounded up a select few of 2023’s major titles (apologies to those who missed the cut but this article may otherwise have ended up longer than War and Peace).

First up, it’s memoirs and we kick off the year with a certain Prince Harry‘s autobiography, Spare, a reference to the phrase “the heir and the spare”, one assumes.

It’s expected to include the Prince’s full account behind his decision to give up royal duties and move to the US (although after Oprah and a six-hour Netflix documentary, how much more can be left to reveal?)

While it promises “raw, unflinching honesty”, we’ll have to wait and see just how many bridges it will burn back in the UK when it’s published. Released 10 January, Penguin.

Other biographies of note include that of renowned children’s author and poet Michael Rosen, who shares his story and life lessons in Getting Better. If anyone knows how to build resilience, it’s Rosen, who here explores both his grief at losing a child and his long battle against Covid-19. 2 February, Penguin.

Blake Morrison‘s groundbreaking confessional memoir And When Did You Last See Your Father? was published nearly 30 years ago and his latest book comes out on its anniversary.

Two Sisters tackles the guilt and shame familiar to many who have a family member with an addiction – Blake’s sister Gill struggled with alcoholism – while he also unearths the story behind his half-sister Josie. 16 February, HarperCollins.

On a lighter note, from Studio 54 to Sex and the City, fashion stylist Patricia Field tells all in her memoir Pat in the City – get it? HarperCollins, 14 February.

Actor and trans advocate Elliot Page will also release a coming-of-age memoir. 6 June, Penguin.

    Fiction

Book 2023: Prince Harry's Spare kicks off publishing bonanza
Leigh Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone was made into a Netflix series

One of the most talked about forthcoming books in literary circles is Kevin Jared Hosain‘s Hungry Ghosts, an epic saga about two contrasting families living in 1940s Trinidad who become embroiled in a number of mysterious and disturbing events.

The late, great Hilary Mantel described it as “deeply impressive” while fellow Booker winner Bernadine Evaristo said it is an “astonishing novel”. Bloomsbury, 16 February.

There’s more historical fiction from Kate Morton in Homecoming, which is set in her native Australia. An unsolved murder case dating back to the 1950s is thrust back into the spotlight when journalist Jess starts digging around in her nan’s Sydney home 60 years later. PanMacmillan, 13 April.

If contemporary fiction is more your thing, you could do worse than pick up a copy of RF Kuang‘s Yellow Face, a shocking satirical thriller set in the cut-throat world of publishing. It tackles identity politics, toxic friendships and cultural appropriation with razor-sharp humour and pace. HarperCollins, 25 May.

For fantasy fans, Hell Bent is the highly anticipated sequel to Leigh Bardugo‘s Ninth House. It sees the return of high school dropout Alex Stern in another fantastical tale of magic, monsters and violence with plenty of twists to keep you guessing. 10 January, Gollancz Publishing.

Balli Kaur Jaswal‘s Now You See Us is also enjoying a lot of chatter – it’s about the lives of three migrant women who are domestic workers for rich families in Singapore and has been described as The Help meets Crazy Rich Asians. 25 May, HarperCollins.

Max Porter, the bestselling author of Grief is the Thing With Feathers and Lanny, returns with Shy, which documents a few strange hours in the life of a troubled teenage boy. 6 April, Faber & Faber.

    The heavy hitters

Book 2023: Prince Harry's Spare kicks off publishing bonanza

Several of the literary scene’s most revered authors have books out this year, including one of our greatest living writers, Salman Rushdie.

Many will celebrate the publication of his fantastical epic tale Victory City with perhaps more fervour than usual as he continues his rehabilitation after being attacked earlier this year.

Set in 14th Century southern India, it features a nine-year-old girl who has a divine encounter that will change the course of history. 7 February, Random House.

The Shards by Bret Easton Ellis is the latest novel from the author who brought you Less Than Zero and American Psycho. It tracks a group of privileged Los Angeles high school friends as a serial killer strikes across the city. 17 January, Penguin Random House.

If you want to feel well-read in double-quick time, try Fourteen Days: An Unauthorized Gathering, which is set in a New York city tenement in the early days of the pandemic. It has a novel twist (pardon the pun) – each character has been secretly written by a different author from Margaret Atwood and John Grisham to Dave Eggers and Celeste Ng. 30 May, Penguin.

Eleanor Catton won the Booker prize for her 2013 novel The Luminaries. She returns 10 years on with Birnam Wood, a psychological thriller based around a guerrilla gardening group who join forces with an unlikely collaborator in the shape of an enigmatic billionaire, in order to take over an abandoned farm. 2 March, Granta.

Deborah Levy‘s 2019 novel The Man Who Saw Everything was longlisted for the Booker and now she’s back with August Blue. Levy takes us on a mesmerising journey across Europe when classical pianist Elsa stumbles upon her double in an Athens flea market, setting them both on a search for identity. 4 May, Penguin.

The queen of magic realism, Isabelle Allende, follows two parallel stories of war and immigration in The Wind Knows My Name. One Jewish child’s mother is desperate for him to escape Nazi-occupied Austria in 1938, while eight decades later, a child and her mother escape danger in El Salvador only to be separated once they reach the United States. 6 June, Random House.

From the bestselling author of The Wonder (recently adapted for Netflix starring Florence Pugh) and Oscar-winning film Room, Emma Donoghue‘s Learned by Heart tells the real-life love story of Eliza Raine and Anne Lister, whose diaries were the inspiration for the BBC series Gentleman Jack. 15 August, Little Brown.

Writer and podcast host Elizabeth Day also returns with her non-fiction title, Friendaholic: Confessions of a Friendship Addict, in which she discusses her own relationship journeys while analysing the significance and evolution of friendship. 30 March, Fourth Estate.

Joanne Harris is back with her first standalone novel for more than 10 years. Broken Light examines how women can feel invisible as they grow older and what happens when they decide to take back control. It’s set against the backdrop of the murder of a woman in the local park. 11 May, Orion.

    The debutantes

Book 2023: Prince Harry's Spare kicks off publishing bonanza
Cecilia Rabess previously worked as a data scientist at Google and as an associate at Goldman Sachs

Speaking of murder, Lady Macbethad by actor, former bookseller and now debut author Isabelle Schuler is the suspense-filled origin story of one of Shakespeare’s best-known characters. 2 March, Bloomsbury.

Stephen Buoro is also one to watch – his debut, The Five Sorrowful Mysteries of Andy Africa, is a coming of age novel set in north Nigeria and has been hailed by Ian Rankin as “wonderfully vivid… instantly engaging”. 13 April, Bloomsbury.

One of this year’s big US debuts comes courtesy of Cecilia Rabess. Everything’s Fine is about a dark romance between a liberal black woman and is set in the years leading up to the election of Donald Trump. 8 June, Picador.

On our side of the pond is the first novel from Sarah May. Set against the 90s tabloid era, Becky is the story of Becky Sharpe (ring any bells Vanity Fair fans?), a young woman determined to make a place for herself in high society and get to the top of the ladder at the newspaper where she works, no matter how many lives she ruins in the process. 26 January, Picador.

Another novel on our radar is Really Good Actually, the witty debut by Schitt’s Creek screenwriter Monica Heisy, about a woman navigating her first year as a young divorcee. 17 January, Fourth Estate.

    BookTok

Book 2023: Prince Harry's Spare kicks off publishing bonanza

Emily Henry enjoyed a big boost to her career thanks to BookTok with romcom novels such as Beach Read and You and Me on Vacation.

Influencer Payten Jewell tells me Henry’s upcoming novel, Happy Place (27 April, Penguin), is one of the most anticipated among the BookTok community. It features a couple who have recently split up but pretend they are still together for the sake of a group holiday with old friends. What could possibly go wrong?!

Jewell’s other picks for 2023 include Taste Like Shakkar by Nisha Sharma, Secretly Yours by Tessa Bailey and an as yet untitled release by her all-time favourite Tia Williams, author of Seven Days in June, which will be published in June.

And the publishing juggernaut that is Richard Osman is back later this year with his latest Thursday Murder Club book, the fourth in the series (as yet untitled). 14 September, Penguin.

Moving away from murder mysteries, The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece by Tom Hanks is the first full-length novel from the A-list star. It offers an insider’s take on the momentous effort required to make a fictional superhero film, spanning 80 years of US history. 9 May, Penguin Random House.

“Contractors of this country are doing a yeoman’s job despite all the difficulties, and I want to assure them that Government will continue to work in their interest and all their outstanding payments from now onwards will be done from time to time.

  • VIDEO: Eddie Nketiah scores first Premier League goal in Arsenal’s win over West Ham

English-born Ghanaian striker Eddie Nketiah scored his first English Premier League goal of the season on Monday night in Arsenal’s comeback win against West Ham at the Emirates Stadium.

Nketiah despite renewing his Arsenal contract in the summer has been on the fringes of the first-team football with Brazilian Gabriel Jesus preferred over him.

With the injury sustained by Jesus, an opportunity has been created for Nketiah which he grabbed with both hands after scoring Arsenal’s third goal in their 3-1 win.

The hammers took the lead in the first half against the run of play when Jarrod Bowen was adjudged to have been tripped in the box by William Saliba.

Said Benrahma stepped and converted the penalty through the middle as Ramsdale dived the wrong way.

There was a mood of frustration among the home fans until Bukayo Saka converted from close range after collecting Martin Odegaard’s mis-hit shot.

Five minutes later, it duly arrived. Gabriel Martinelli put the hosts ahead, catching out West Ham’s former Gunners keeper Lukasz Fabianski by tucking inside the near post from a tight angle when he seemed more likely to cross.

The points were sealed when Eddie Nketiah – starting in place of the injured Gabriel Jesus – spun sharply in the box before firing into the opposite bottom corner. VIDEO BELOW:

  • MTN FA Cup: Kotoko beat Bechem United on penalties to progress into round of 32

Asante Kotoko defeated Bechem United 4-2 on penalties after some heroics from goalkeeper Frederick Asare on Monday afternoon.

The Porcupine warriors had their leaky backline to blame after taking an early 2-0 lead and watching helplessly as Bechem United leveled the scores to make it 2-2.

Kotoko started the game strongly and dominated for long spells as they made their dominance count with in-form Ugandan striker Steven Dese Mukwala getting the opener in just the fifth minute of the game.

Three minutes after the opening goal, the lethal striker added his second of the game after running onto a through pass to make it 2-0 Kotoko and score his fifth goal in competitions for the reds.

Bechem United began to up the ante and their efforts were duly rewarded with a goal in the 18th minute from Isaiah Nyarko to make it 2-1.

Asante Kotoko withstood the pressure as they went into the halftime break with a slender 2-1 lead.

After recess, Bechem United was all over Asante Kotoko in search of the equalizer as the reds played on the counter break.

The hunters finally profited as the impressive Francis Twene scored the leveler through a deflected free kick to send the game into a penalty shoot-out.

Bechem United nearly snatches a win as Seth Kwadwo sent wide a shot from a corner when he had the gaping goal at his mercy.

Kotoko goalie Frederick Asare was the hero as he saved two penalties as the reds won 4-2 to book a  place in the round of 32.

  • Transport unions in Nkwanta South are adamant about lowering transportation costs

Despite the drop in fuel prices and corresponding drop in prices across the board, certain transport companies in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region continue to charge old lorry rates.

On Monday, December 19, 2022, transportation costs were projected to decrease by 15.3%.

Commercial transport companies were instructed to adhere to the new fares and post them at their loading ports by a directive announcing the reduction.

The majority of transport unions have yet to implement the increased fees, according to a visit the Ghana News Agency made to the various terminals.

They include the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Co-operative, Rural Action Society limited, and STC, except the Vision Express that had reduced its fares.

Mr Muniru Safianu, the Chairman, Nkwanta South GPRTU, in an interview with the GNA, said the leadership had not received any order from the head office to reduce the fares.

  • The government extends the domestic debt exchange program’s deadline until January 16

The invitation date for the voluntary domestic debt exchange will now expire on January 9, 2023, the government said on Saturday (at 1600 hours).

According to a press release from the Finance Ministry, the Longstop Date for the Invitation is now set for Tuesday, January 31, 2023, and the Settlement Date is now anticipated to take place on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, “or as soon as practicable thereafter, but no later than the Settlement Date, unless further extended by the Government pursuant to the Invitation,” the release stated.

“The Announcement Date is now expected to occur on or about 17th January 2023″.

The previous deadline for the invitation was set for Friday, December 30, following the extension of the original deadline of Monday, December 19.

A press release on the development, issued by the Public Relations Unit of the Finance Ministry, also announced some modifications by the government on the invitation to the Exchange.

    They are as follows:

    i. Offering accrued and unpaid interest on Eligible Bonds, and a cash tender fee payment to holders of Eligible Bonds maturing in 2023;

    ii. Increasing the New Bonds offered by adding eight new instruments to the composition of the New Bonds, for a total of 12 New Bonds, one maturing each year starting January 2027 and ending January 2038;

    iii. Modifying the Exchange Consideration Ratios for each New Bond. The Exchange Consideration Ratio applicable to Eligible Bonds maturing in 2023 will be different than for other Eligible Bonds;

iv. Setting a non-binding target minimum level of overall participation of 80% of the aggregate principal amount outstanding of Eligible Bonds; and

    v. Expanding the type of investors that can participate in the Exchange to now include Individual Investors.

The release said these modifications would be set forth fully in an Amended and Restated Exchange Memorandum which is expected to be published during the week of 26th December 2022.

It explained: “Conforming changes (including adding and modifying defined terms) in respect of the above amendments and modifications to cure ambiguity, omission, defect, error or inconsistency may be included in the Amended and Restated Exchange Memorandum.

“As set forth in the Exchange Memorandum, the Government reserves the right in its sole discretion to extend the timetable for the Invitation at any time and to make amendments to the Invitation at any time.”

The Government urged eligible holders, whose eligible bonds were held on their behalf by a broker, dealer, bank, custodian, trust company or other nominee to contact such entity they wished to participate in the Invitation, as such entities may establish an earlier deadline to receive instructions to tender eligible bonds.

“In making this decision to extend and the modifications described herein, the Government considered feedback from the financial sector in relation to the need to secure internal approvals,” the release said.”

“Further, this extension affords the Government of Ghana the opportunity to consider suggestions made by all stakeholders with the aim of adjusting certain measures acceptable within the constraints of the Government’s Debt Sustainability Analysis.”

As part of its efforts to address the country’s ongoing economic crisis, the Government on Monday, December 5, launched a domestic exchange programme of approximately GHS137.3 billion of principal amount outstanding of certain of its domestic notes and bonds issued by the Government, E.S.L.A. Plc or Daakye Trust Plc.

It invited non individual eligible domestic bondholders to exchange them for a package of new bonds to be issued by the Government.

This will facilitate and support its move for economic restoration, stability and growth following the COVID-19 pandemic, high crude oil prices and other external factors.

The Government has reached a Staff Level Agreement with the International Monetary Fund for a three billion dollar bailout package.

  • 32% of persons living with HIV stop treatment due to out-of-pocket-payments

Health facilities have been urged by the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) to take into account the condition of HIV-positive people and lower out-of-pocket expenses for HIV services.

This is because many of them are forced to stop receiving therapy as a result of the practice.

Dr Kyeremeh Atuahene, the Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, said the intervention had become crucial as more than 32 per cent of persons living with HIV (PLHIV) in 2021 alone discontinued treatment because they could not afford to pay.

Dr Atuahene made this known at the launch and dissemination of the National AIDS Spending Assessment (NASA) report for 2019, 2020, and 2021.

NASA is a comprehensive and systemic resource tracking method that describes the financial flow, actual disbursements, and expenditures on HIV and AIDS programmes.

It describes the HIV and AIDS financial flow and expenditures for both health and non-health activities for the period while identifying and addressing funding gaps.

He said over the last three years, out-of-pocket payments by PLHIV and households increased from almost 22 million dollars in 2019 to almost 28 million dollars in 2020 and about a 32million dollars in 2021%.

The Director General said those “catastrophic expenditures” affected PLHIV, and households and had impacted the number of HIV-related deaths in the country.

“It is very concerning because the policy of the government is that, the full range of HIV services from testing to treatment and the entire scope of case management is supposed to be free,” he added.

The Director General said, however, PLHIVs were made to pay due to the challenge of delays in NHIS fund releases to service providers and other related issues, including laboratory services.

The Director General appealed to the Government, especially the Ministry of Finance to ensure that NHIS received its releases on time and in the right amount.
He said situations, where PLHIV were discontinuing treatment clearly, showed how deepening the situation was in inequalities concerning access to HIV services and access to health services in general.

Dr Atuahene said as a country committed to achieving universal health coverage, the situation undermined the objectives and efforts to end HIV and AIDS by the year 2030 as well as commitments to living no one behind and must be fixed.

He said it was important that government and the people worked together to achieve those goals and for that to happen, there should be no barrier to access to health care services, especially for persons living with HIV.

  • Arsenal fans hail Eddie Nketiah, Thomas Partey for performance against West Ham

Arsenal fans on social media have hailed Eddie Nketiah and Thomas Partey for their display in the team’s 3-1 victory over West Ham.

Eddie Nketiah was among the goal-scorers as Arsenal came from a goal down to beat West Ham 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

His performance has impressed Arsenal fans who are hailing him for stepping up after the club lost Gabriel Jesus to injuries.

Eddie Nketiah’s goal has given Arsenal fans assurance that the speculated two months without Gabriel Jesus will not be as bad as feared.

While Nketiah was leading the line, Thomas Partey was making the team tick in midfield with his incredible passing abilities.

In 88 minutes played, Partey recorded 104 touches, 77 passes completed, 12 final third passes, nine ball recoveries, 4 long balls completed, 4 ground duels won, 2/2 aerial duels won and 2 fouls won.

  • Chief Imam leads prayers for ill Ghanaian millionaire Asuma Banda

The National Chief Imam and former president John Dramani Mahama have both visited Alhaji Asuma Banda thus far, perhaps answering the family’s requests for them to mediate the conflict between the various factions within the family of the then-bedridden businessman Asuma Banda.

Shortly after pictures surfaced of John Mahama sharing some moments with Alhaji Banda, a video of the National Chief Imam and some leadership of the Muslim community holding prayers for the business mogul has been circulating on social media.

The video which per GhanaWeb checks was taken at one of the residences of Alhaji Asuma Banda has the Chief Iman leading prayers for him.

The visit by the Chief Imam and his entourage follows an interview granted Rainbowradio by sisters of the former Chief Executive Officer of Antrak Air for him to intervene in the issue.

The sisters on December 7, 2022, told Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that they were seeking the intervention of the president, the office of the former president and the Chief Imam to resolve custody issues around their brother.

”We know the court has ruled in favor of the second wife. But he is our beloved family member. We acknowledge what his two wives have done for him. We will not be ungrateful to them.

“But our brother has requested to go to Kintampo. And so we are appealing to the president to intervene,” they said in apparent reference to the second wife’s reluctance to allow him to be moved.

They revealed that except for Tuesday, December 6, 2022, we have not seen our brother in the past five years, the Rainbow Radio report added.

”We are still appealing to friends, the business community, and all those who know our brother to intervene. The court has ruled, but we are interested in making our brother better.

“John Mahama knows my brother so well. Nana Addo was his good friend. I am also appealing to Frema Opare to intervene. The two wives are tired, and we want to take over as his sisters,” Hajia Shatta said.

  • BoG issues fresh guidance to prevent the financing of terrorism

New anti-money laundering/countering the financing of terrorism and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (AML/CFT&P) regulations have been released by the Bank of Ghana.

The new rules, according to the central bank, will aid in the creation of licensed institutions and the implementation of each one’s AML/CFT&P compliance regime.

The anti-money laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044) sections 52 and 61, as well as section 92(2)(a)(vii) of the banks and specialized deposit-taking institutions, Act 2016, were cited by the bank as justification for the new instruction (Act 930).

The BoG said the enactment of the now repealed Acts: Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2008 (Act 749) and AntiMoney Laundering (Amendment) Act, 2014 (Act 874), together with the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2008 (Act 762), among others has intensified Ghana’s efforts towards the fight against money laundering, terrorism and proliferation financing (ML/TF&PF).

According to the BoG, the purpose of Act 1044 will not be realised unless there is an effective implementation of the collaborative measures being adopted by the Bank of Ghana (BOG) and the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) as well as compliance by accountable institutions (AIs), adding, “It is against this background that the BoG and FIC have developed this Guideline for AIs”.

The guideline has incorporated essential elements of Act 1044, Act 762 as amended and regulations, relevant Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Recommendations, the sound practices of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision and other international best practices on AntiMoney Laundering and the Combating of the Financing of Terrorism and the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (AML/CFT&P).

The scope of unlawful activities includes counterfeiting currency, counterfeiting and piracy of products, environmental crime, participation in an organised criminal group, and racketeering and terrorism, including terrorist financing.

The functions of the Bank of Ghana include adopting a risk-based approach in supervising and monitoring AIs; monitor and periodically assess the level of ML/TF&PF risk of the AIs; carry out an examination of AIs based on the Bank of Ghana risk-assessment framework, request production of, access to, the records, documents, or any other information relevant to the supervision and monitoring of AIs and develop guidelines, directives or notices to ensure compliance.

Others are to provide feedback on compliance with obligations under the Act 1044 by AIs; approve the appointment of the AMLRO of AIs; and undertake any other activity necessary for assisting AIs to understand their obligations under Act 1044.

Aside from these, the BoG would also cooperate and share information with any other competent authorities in the performance of functions and the exercise of powers under Act 1044.

The bank shall initiate and act on a request from a foreign counterpart and notify FIC immediately; impose administrative penalties for non-compliance with Act 1044; issue Guidelines/Notices/Directives to ensure compliance with Act 1044; perform any other function as may be required to ensure compliance with Act 1044; among others.

  • Kwabena Yeboah wades into Paul Adom-Otchere’s Christmas tree saga

Kwabena Yeboah, a board member of the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) has opined that given the chance, the board chair of GACL, Paul Adom-Otchere will act differently in the matter of the purchase of materials for the decoration of the Kotoka International Airport last year.

Kwabena Yeboah suggested in an interview with Blakk Rasta on 3FM that Paul Adom-Otchere would react differently if the situation was to be reversed.

According to him, owing to the backlash that his actions generated, Adom-Otchere would have delegated the CEO of KIA to handle the matter of purchasing items for the decoration of the airport.

He disclosed that this year’s decorations were fully-funded by the Ghana Oil Limited (GOIL) and that the processes were fully handled by the CEO .

“We hadn’t been sworn as a board yet. I haven’t spoken to him specifically about this but I want to believe that if he had an opportunity, he would have loved the CEO to do that.

“For example, this coming Christmas, we are decorating the place but it has got nothing to do with us. It’s GOIL who have decided to sponsor the whole package.

“As I said, I didn’t not know the peculiar circumstances under which he decided to have his name on the invoice but considering the furore and uproar, if he had the opportunity, he would have been better off staying away and letting the CEO do that job,” he said.

Paul Adom-Otchere got a lot flak after it emerged that the procurement of Christmas trees for the airport were done by himself, the Board Chair.

The procurement process a well as the cost of the decoration drew the ire of some Ghanaians who accused Adom-Otchere of engaging in profligacy.

It was reported that it cost the GACL GH₵84,000 to decorate the place but Adom-Otchere refuted the allegations, mentioning GH ₵34,000 as the cost because portions of the works had been fully sponsored.

“The beautiful Christmas tree standing at Terminal 3 and 3 others altogether cost GHC 34,000, which was graciously provided by Jandel Limited at a heavy discount. (We thank Jandel Limited)”

“The other inspirations were provided by Favors and Arts for a total cost of GHC 84,000 out of which GHC 50,000 was obtained via sponsorship,” he said on his Good Evening Ghana programme last year.

  • Before year’s end, road contractors will be paid – minister of roads

The government will pay off a “chunk” of the unpaid obligations owing to road contractors before the year is through, according to Mr. Kwasi Amoako-Atta, the minister of roads and highways.

“Despite all the challenges, contractors in this country are doing a fantastic job. I want to reassure them that the government will continue to operate in their best interests and that all future payments will be made on schedule.

“A chunk of outstanding (payments) are going to be effected before the end of the year and it will continue,” Mr Amoako-Atta said when he addressed a gathering at the 2022 Nine Lessons and Carols of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) in Accra.

This year’s event was organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Roads and Highways.

Mr Amoako-Atta said in spite of the economic challenges, the Government did not halt any road project and assured that more investments would be channelled to the roads sector.

He appealed to individuals in areas that were yet to have their roads repaired to remain calm as the Government mobilised resources to further expand the country’s road network.

“The people deserve to have good roads. I appeal to all those who haven’t had their turn to be patient and calm,” he said.

Mr Amoako-Atta appealed to motorists to obey road traffic regulations to ensure accident-free festive season.

Mr Amoako-Atta said the improvement of the country’s road network did not guarantee the flouting of road traffic regulations as the expense of human lives.

“We see drivers refusing to obey speed limits especially on new roads. We should not turn roads into death traps.

Roads development of our nation is a total effort from all of us. Let’s continue to observe road safety signs and respect all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists,” he said.

Delivering a sermon on the theme: “Christ Our Savour,” Reverend Commodore Paul Adjei Djan, Director General of Religious Affairs of the Ghana Armed Forces, urged the citizenry to emulate the qualities of Jesus Christ by embracing righteousness and eschewing selfishness.

“We must turn away from our wicked ways and have a change of mind and do the things God wants us to do,” he said.
Professor Amin Alhassan, Director General, GBC, thanked the Government for the support extended to the Organisation in the year, particularly the asphalting of roads within its Head Office and regional offices.

  • 88-year-old man looking to have WWI explosive in his rectum removed causes bomb scare at hospital

A French hospital had to partially evacuate after a man came in with an interesting case on Saturday night.

The New York Post reports that an 88-year-old man paid a visit to the Hospital Sainte Musse in Toulon, France because he had a World War I artillery shell wedged in his rectum. He needed the item removed—and many hospital staff was concerned it would explode in him. According to the French newspaper Nice-Matin, he told staff that the item was “demilitarized.”

This led the hospital to clear out part of its hospital from 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. local time, particularly “the evacuation of adult and pediatric emergencies as well as the diversion of incoming emergencies,” according to a hospital spokesperson. Intensive care patients were also moved to a tent outside. The incident “required the intervention of bomb disposal personnel.”

“We had to manage the risk in a reactive framework. When in doubt, we took all the precautions,” the rep said. Bomb disposal experts concluded that the object would not likely explode and “reassured us by telling us that it was a collector’s item from the First World War, used by the French military,” the hospital added.

Hospital doctors then attempted to extract the shell, which is about 8 inches long and over 2 inches wide. He had to undergo surgery to have it removed via his abdomen. He is on the mend and will likely fully recoup from the incident.

  • FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried granted release on $250 million bail

FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried is set to be released on a $250 million bail package.

According to the Associated Press, , a New York federal judge announced the decision on Thursday, less than two weeks after the disgraced cryptocurrency executive was arrested on fraud charges in the Bahamas. As part of the bail terms, Magistrate Judge Gabriel W. Gorenstein ordered Bankman-Fried to surrender his passport, wear an ankle monitoring bracelet, and remain under house arrest at his parents’ Palo Alto, California, home.

“It would be very difficult for this defendant to hide without being recognized,” Judge Gorenstein said, as reported by the New York Times. “So I believe that the risk of flight is appropriately mitigated.”

The judge announced his ruling just hours after Bankman-Fried’s voluntary extradition from the Bahamas, where FTX is based. The 30-year-old MIT graduate is facing multiple charges in connection to his role in FTX’s downfall. The now-bankrupt company was founded in 2019, and served as a cryptocurrency exchange. At its peak, FTX had more than 1 million users and became one of the biggest crypto startups in the world, with an estimated value of $32 billion.

Back in November, Bankman-Fried was accused of diverting investors’ assets to his privately held crypto hedge fund, Alameda Research. Prosecutors also allege the man used customers’ money to purchase real estate and make political donations. He was eventually arrested on Dec. 12 and hit with eight counts, including conspiracy, wire fraud, securities fraud, money laundering, and campaign finance violations. If he’s convicted of the charges, he could face up to 115 years in prison.

Bankman-Fried has since apologized to his customers, but insisted he never committed any crimes.

“I fucked up,” he wrote in a statement for the House Financial Services Committee last week. “… Last year, my net worth was valued at $20 billion. Today, I would be wrong to say that I have nothing: I have a loving family, and food on my plate, and that’s more than life has given to billions of people. But last I saw, I believe my bank account had about $100,000 in it.”

Bankman-Fried’s next court hearing is scheduled for Jan. 3, 2023.

“I urge all of us, to celebrate the season safely and responsibly, if you are in a more fortunate position, remember to lend a helping hand to those who are in need, let each one of us do our bit to help feed those who are hungry and offer comfort to those who are in distress,” the President said this his Christmas message to Ghanaians.

  • Akufo-Addo’s tribute to Prof. Kwesi Botchwey

The death of my good friend, Dr. Kwesi Botchwey, is a very sad development.

My contemporary, in the mid-1960s, at the University of Ghana, Legon, Dr. Botchwey was a longstanding public servant, who discharged his duties thoughtfully and with dignity, and became Ghana’s longest-serving Minister for Finance and Economic Planning.

A Ghanaian patriot and a committed Pan-Africanist, politics was, for him, an avenue to serve his nation and continent, not a vehicle for venting his personal dislikes and embarking on vendettas against others.

We subscribed, in our adult lives, to different ideological persuasions, differences that did not diminish the respect we had for each other or for our friendship.

I will miss him and his urbane, civilized conduct and demeanour.

The thoughts and sympathies of my wife, Rebecca, the First Lady, and I are with his partner, Gwendy, children and family.

I extend my deepest condolences to them, and also to the National Democratic Congress, of which he was a prominent and much respected member.

Ghana has lost a fine gentleman and exceptional public servant. May his soul rest in perfect peace in the Bosom of the Almighty until the Last Day of the Resurrection when we shall all meet again.

    Amen!

  • My style of dressing is inspired by my projects – Cina Soul

Singer Cina Soul has disclosed that her unique look has always been inspired by the projects she releases.

According to Cina, she adopted an African look when she released an EP titled ‘Ga Mashi’. During the period, she wore traditional Ga outfits and also adorned herself with local Ghanaian beads at every public appearance.

Now that Cina has a new EP with Afrobeats and HipHop songs, she has switched her style to suit her project.

Cina told GhanaWeb’s reporter, Paula Amma Broni how she came up with her traditional look some years ago.

“It was for a moment. I released an EP called ‘Ga Mashi’ during that moment, so it makes sense to be that persona for that moment. If I’ve gone past that project and released an EP called ‘For Times We Lost’ that is very Afrobeats/HipHop, why do I keep doing that? All this is intentional, I like to be a different persona with every project I put out. I love to stay different all the time,” Cina disclosed.

The ‘OMG’ singer gave credit to her glam team for always making her stand out at every occasion. She added that her image matters a lot to her.

“My glam team don’t sleep, they are always on point and always trying to make me look good because my image is really important…every space am in, they want me to stand out,” she said.

The musical group FBS has expressed their appreciation for current technology which according to them has increased the range and listenership of their music.

Additionally, they mentioned TikTok and Snapchat as social media platforms where some of their most recent songs were promoted and did so well.

According to the artiste, upcoming performers should use these social media sites to their advantage to market themselves.

“Now we have TikTok, we have the Snapchats, we have all those apps that can easily make you get the hit, trust me you are going to go.

“We knew this is our take and for the young ones out there to get good talent, the real, and be original.

  • 175 new childhood cancer cases recorded at KATH

Health Workers at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital say there is an increasing trend in the number of Childhood Cancers being recorded at the facility.

Over 175 new cases were recorded this year which is more than one and a half the number recorded each year.

Officials are attributing the trend to continuous reporting of cases at the facility following intensified awareness of the early warning signs associated with Childhood Cancers.

The Head of the Paediatric Oncology Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Dr. Vivian Paintsil encouraged parents to seek early treatment for their children.

The government recently included four childhood cancers in the National Health Insurance Scheme.

The Authority says most children are still not registered in the scheme and the government’s intervention will be meaningless without these victims being part of the scheme.

Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Health Insurance Authority, Dr. Ernest Kwarko indicated that he is spearheading an initiative to register 1000 children with cancer onto the scheme to complement efforts by the government.

  • Mahama’s full tribute to Prof. Kwesi Botchwey

The passing of my elder brother Kwesi ‘B’, as I called him, after a short illness has left me and the hordes of our compatriots and the nation at large, numb with deep sadness.

We are yet to come to terms with this new reality that, for the first time, we will no longer have the benefit of his ever-readiness to serve his party, his country and his God.

It is difficult to accept that your party, the NDC, can, today, no longer draw upon your sharp intellect, profound knowledge and varied expertise that served as a bulwark of stability for our economy, leading to the birthing of our enduring 4th Republic.

It is painful to accept that you would not be physically present to consult when the NDC returns to power to pursue its goal of changing the fortunes of the people of Ghana.

It is sad to accept that we have had our last “buga’ dance and our plans to celebrate you in grand style on your 80th birthday, will no longer be possible. Kwesi ‘B’ was a gifted fixer – plain and simple.

He was the longest serving Finance Minister of our Republic for a reason. A man of immense intellectual acumen and practical wisdom, his life had been one of selfless service to his country and humanity.

Significantly, his service led to transformation of lives across the globe. He was a statesman par excellence and a national treasure.

It is a measure of his industry, scholarly credentials, and depth of knowledge that he served at various capacities both at home and abroad, including sharing his expertise with global organizations and bodies like the IMF, the World Bank, the UN, the OECD and the Commonwealth.

In spite of this incomparable resume, Professor Kwesi Botchwey never yielded to the temptation of engaging in self-adulation and promotion but preferred to have his work speak for him. This is a vital lesson of servantship that all of us, especially politicians, must emulate.

This is why he was a man I admired greatly. He continued to serve in various capacities, the last being Member of the Council of Elders of the NDC, until he was finally called to rest.

Even after retirement, the statesman that he was, he continued to serve till the very end. You have served your God, your fellow man, your country, and your party faithfully, and you have earned your due rest.

But being human, we would have preferred to have you around a bit longer, especially now that your country is going through torrid economic times.

We are reminded, however, by the words of the Priest-Poet John Donne who remarked that: “God himself took a day to rest in, and a good man’s grave [or death] is his Sabbath.” Kwesi ‘B’: the cruel hand of death has only severed our physical connection: it may have ended a life but never the ties, memories and inspiration you left with us that continue to spur us on.

You have gone but will never be forgotten as long as the NDC exists; You have gone but will never be forgotten, as long as the story of the economy of our country is told; You have gone but will never be forgotten whenever we recall some of the greatest sons and daughters our country has ever produced.

The poet Emile Dickenson was right about you: “Because I could not stop for Death – He kindly stopped for me – The Carriage held but just Ourselves – And Immortality.”

Because you were driven by a desire to improve the livelihood of your people, you never stopped to take a deserved rest.

Your friends, comrades, party and nation, with a grateful heart, bids you farewell. May God Almighty grant you peaceful repose.

  • Charles Cardinal: One million dollars per constituency

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his campaign in the 2016 general elections, promised Ghanaians that if voted into power, he would roll out a programme that would give every constituency one million dollars to facilitate the rapid development of the constituencies.

Then, on the 30th of August, 2016, the then Vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party announced a one million dollar for each constituency policy aimed at alleviating poverty in the country. He said that the policy was under the infrastructure for poverty eradication at a total cost of $1.6 billion. With this amount, the NPP government intended to invest in pro-poor policy in villages across the country.

This one was coming just after they put the people into a deceptive mood of building oone-village-one-dam God being so good, the people of Ghana gave them the mandate and after over enjoying and becoming intoxicated with power, the Vice President began to deny the said promise.

At a forum held in UK, the vice President of Ghana was asked about numerous promises which he and his party made during the 2016 election campaign. In fact, the Vice President of Ghana, Mahamadu Bawumia was referred to One million dollars per constituency and he boldly declined it.

According to him, they never promised $1million per each constituency, it was just a mere thought.

President Akufo-Addo, and his Vice President, Dr. Bawumia have never been consistent and candid with Ghanaians with their promises either because they took the intelligence of many poor Ghanaians for granted or they believe Ghanaians are fools.

In 1st October, 2018, Ms Mavis Hawa Koomson, Minister for Special Development Initiatives, had said that Government was impacting lives under the Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Programme (IPEP) to improve livelihoods across the country.

She said under the audacious IPEP policy initiative, the President was delivering on his promise to reorient the national capital expenditure, to place focus on local constituency-specific needs to properly decentralize development.

According to the Minister, government had resolved to reallocate the equivalent of $275 million to provide infrastructural development in rural and deprived communities.

These confirms the deliberate political gimmicks Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP played with Ghanaians for votes, because according to the Minister’s own assertions, government could not give the constituencies their money to take up their own development needs. Hence; the top down approach to providing projects for the constituencies. Even then, such projects they claimed to have done cannot be seen. One cannot  tell  how these projects were identified and feasibility studies conducted, and its environmental impact assessments on the people whom the projects were meant to benefit. They forget what they are referring to are real physical which can be seen on the ground if they exist.

The sad about these is that, I have looked and checked Trobu Constituency and not a single infrastructure project I have seen under such deceived promise of “Try me leader”.

This has also called to question the competence of the  kind of Parliamentary representation Trobu has chosen over the years. It turned out, the Member of Parliament has no capacity to influence government policies in fovour of the constituents.

The President and his government has demonstrated lack of vision and direction for our country and allowing the country to sink.

In today’s economy, there are many Ghanaians and households which are living below the International accepted poverty line of $2.15 per person per day with 3,386.08 people living in extreme poverty. These people are deprived of basic essential which makes life worthwhile. This, is not a challenge to Government. One would have thought, Government which promised heaven, will act in maturity to take bold initiatives in implementing poverty reduction strategies and policies with available scarce resources in order to alleviate the plights of the people. It has rather turned out to be vice – versa.

Government’s economic policies has rather exacerbated the suffering of the masses. Resources are being siphon from the periphery and creating wealth for the small family at the centre. This trend of governance is worrying and very distasteful.

The One million US dollars could have made a positive change in the lives of the destitute who are looking for inexistent job opportunities just to make earns meat for themselves and their families if really our Government is a people centered. But we are confronted with a Government which takes opportunities of the many challenges to oppress the people.

While they told us there is no Government job and employment opportunities and went ahead to announce freeze on public sector employment, the  President has a plan of increasing  Presidential or Government machinery staff by 1,697 to 3, 681 on the poor tax payers. This is a fact contained in page 280 of 2023 budget. This same NPP Government under Nana Addo has considered building National Cathedral at a time when there is an announced austerity measures and made budgetary allocation of 80 million cedis to the construction of National Cathedral.

The poor Ghanaian labour who has toiled many years  and invested his pensions to secure stable financial future, not only for himself but for his offspring are now being given haircut on his investments. This by far, a policy aimed at exacerbating the living conditions of the masses. This inhuman treatment must not be accepted by labour front in the country.

If Government cannot provide what they promised us, then, they have no right to take from our sweat.

It is time to remind the President and his Government to fulfill what they promised Ghanaians. If they say the kitchen is hot, they must come out with sweat. The people deserves better.

  • African agribusinesses should get strategic US investment, the trade minister urges

As part of comprehensive efforts to economically empower the African continent, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, Ghana’s Minister of Trade and Industry, has argued for extensive investment in the agricultural sector.
The industrial expert made this declaration at the recent US-African leaders’ meeting, which took place in Washington, DC, from December 13–15, 2022.

The shared goals of developing new economic engagement, reaffirming the U.S. and African commitment to democracy and human rights, and reducing the effects of COVID-19 and upcoming pandemics served as the foundation for the U.S.-Africa Leaders’ Summit.

It also focused on working collaboratively to strengthen regional and global health; promote food security; advance peace and security; respond to the climate crisis; and amplify diaspora ties.

African Trade Ministers used the opportunity to stage a round table discussion with US Members of Congress and other high-ranking officials led by Ambassador Katherine Tai, the US Trade Representative.

They also used the platform to discuss continental matters with an emphasis on the industrialization agenda as exposed by recent external shocks that threaten to ground most economies in Africa.

Speaking on behalf of the US Government, Ambassador Tai highlighted the importance of the U.S. – Africa economic relationship in addressing current financial challenges and building a more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive future. Ambassador Tai reiterated the need for the two sides to work together to fulfill AGOA’s promise to boost the productive capacity of the continent and to pursue equitable growth for all segments of both societies.

Central among the many areas discussed was the extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) which is set to expire in September 2025.

Hon. Kyerematen, in his speech at the roundtable, called for the need for enhanced US investment in selected strategic sectors such as Agriculture and Agribusiness, oil and gas, blue ocean economy and investment in light manufacturing industries, support for the development of infrastructure including roads, rail, port infrastructure, and renewable energy.

The longest serving Trade and Industry Minister in Ghana urged African leaders and the United States to identify key areas whose transformation will be felt by the average African amidst the global economic meltdown.

Hon. Mr. Kyerematen also joined President Akufo-Addo to attend a series of high-profile meetings and events including the meetings with the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the President of the World Bank Group.

He represented the President of the Republic at the National Black Chamber of Commerce Business Forum as well as the US Chamber of Commerce and Corporate Council on Africa’s Presidential Dialogue all in Washington DC.

The Ghana delegation has since returned home.

In addition, he noted that these compliments from these big shots humble him rather than make him feel pompous.

“I see them as compliments and a challenge for me to do more. Black Sherif is just starting, and Ghanaians and the world are about to experience something spectacular from me,” he added.

Black Sherif gained international recognition with his streak of top-charting hits, including First and Second Sermon and Kwaku The Traveller.

  • From January 2023, expect to pay more for your purchases – Importers and Exporters

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana has served notice that starting in January 2023, prices would rise.

The Association claims that the approved 2.5 percent increase in the value added tax is to blame for the anticipated price increases.

The Value Added Tax Amendment bill, which would have raised the rate by 2.5 percent, has been approved by a majority of lawmakers.

As a result, Ghana’s total amount of VAT might reach 21.5%.

In response, Samson Awingobit, the executive secretary of the association, said that the hike was a horrible choice and the exact reverse of what the current government did.

He said the current government promised to move Ghana from taxation to industrialization.

“However, they have done the opposite. They have failed all the promises they made to the business community. They have introduced more taxes since they took over.”

“We strongly believe that the government has been unjust to the business community,” he said. I can tell you with certainty that, since 2018, all of the promises they made to us have not been fulfilled. Their policies have derailed our businesses, eroded our interests, and impacted our capital.”

The home side were reduced to 10 men in the 38th minute when Hassane Kamara was sent off but they were comprehensively outplayed on their own turf.

Millwall started brightly and Jake Cooper just failed to get on the end of a Flemming cross after just a minute.

Daniel Bachmann nearly gifted the south London side a goal after six minutes, when an attempted clearance fell to the feet of Tom Bradshaw. However, the Watford goalkeeper made immediate amends when he palmed away the follow-up effort from the forward.

Murray Wallace lifted his effort just over the bar after 14 minutes, while Bachmann saved from a George Saville shot on the edge of the area.

The visitors finally took a deserved lead after 22 minutes, when Bradshaw laid off to Voglsammer who shot down low past Bachmann – his first goal in a Millwall shirt.

The German almost made it 2-0 five minutes later when he forced the Watford keeper into another save, after he pounced on a Cooper header.

Watford looked out of sorts, and their woes were further compounded when Joao Pedro had to be substituted after 35 minutes, with Yaser Asprilla his replacement.

They went down to 10 men three minutes later when Kamara clashed with keeper George Long.

The defender then floored Danny McNamara, who appeared to stick a leg out at the Watford player, and referee Josh Smith showed a red card to the Watford player.

There was no obvious sign of Millwall letting up after the restart. They pushed for a second goal and Bachmann had to collect a long-range Saville effort 12 minutes after the break.

Voglsammer looked to have netted the second goal his side deserved after 64 minutes, but his looped effort was directed on to the crossbar and away.

Watford were always in the game with just a one-goal deficit, and Ismaila Sarr was denied by some last-gasp tackling from the Millwall backline a minute later.

The hosts finally put on a bit of pressure and Kiernan Davis fired over the bar on the turn.

Voglsammer was guilty of putting his effort wide after 73 minutes, but the south London side finally earned their second goal with seven minutes left.

A free-kick outside the box by the corner was delivered Flemming and ended up in the net without taking a touch from another player.

Long had to pull off a fine save in added time from substitute Asprilla, but the Boxing Day afternoon belonged to Millwall

  • Use STEM expertise to address practical problems – Angela Mensah-Poku

Young women are being urged by Vodafone Ghana’s Angela Mensah-Poku, Director of Digital and Commercial Operations, to apply their STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) skills to real-world issues.

On a panel discussing “The Status of Ghanaian Women” at the EVE project’s inaugural meeting, Angela delivered these remarks.

Due to their lack of exposure to how technology is used in society, Angela noticed that the majority of job applicants lack practical skills.

“As young women in STEM, you must be pragmatic with the education you obtain,” she recommended in her submission. “Consider how you can apply the knowledge you have gained to address issues in society.

“In my field, for example, I am on the lookout for candidates who have experience with artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud computing, robots, automation and digital marketing. So, while you are pursuing an education in physics, math or any other STEM discipline, you must consider how you will apply your knowledge in society.”

The director also said that organisations need to work together on making STEM knowledge practical.

She explained how Vodafone Ghana has led the way in this area by making a concerted effort to expose young women to the experience of working in a real company through internships.

She also said that the presence of women in leadership roles at Vodafone Ghana gives these young women “real-life examples and role models who show what can be done after getting an education”.

According to Angela, Vodafone Ghana’s efforts have paid-off thanks to initiatives like the Female Engineering Students Sponsorship Programme.

The programme is a key part of the telco’s efforts to promote diversity and inclusion.

It works with top STEM schools to find the best female engineering graduates and help them become leaders in their fields.

  • Ellis Simms nets injury-time winner for Sunderland against Blackburn

Ellis Simms slotted home a stoppage-time winner as Sunderland claimed a dramatic 2-1 win over Blackburn at the Stadium of Light.

Simms left the bench in the closing stages of the game to make a decisive intervention as he found the net following a square ball from Dan Ballard.

His composed finish settled things after Ross Stewart had scored a goal at either end.

Promotion hopefuls Blackburn would have been hopeful of another victory when Stewart’s deflected header found his own net in the 18th minute, but the Sunderland striker was celebrating at the other end just four minutes later as he converted a penalty to level the scores.

Stewart was returning to the starting line-up for the first time since suffering a thigh injury in early September, having made a goalscoring intervention from the substitutes’ bench in the previous weekend’s draw at Hull.

The Scotsman was at the heart of both of the key moments during the first half, scoring at either end as the scores were level at the interval.

Blackburn’s opener came in the 18th minute, with Tyler Morton’s in-swinging free-kick causing panic within the Sunderland defence.

Stewart tried to clear with a stooping header, but instead of getting the ball away from danger, the Black Cats striker found his own net via a deflection of a combination of Dennis Cirkin and Daniel Ayala.

It was harsh on Sunderland’s leading scorer, but he made amends four minutes later as he won and successfully dispatched a spot-kick.

Patrick Roberts’ failure to control a bouncing pass in the area saw the ball bounce into Stewart’s path and, as he shaped to shoot, the striker was sent tumbling by John Buckley’s awkward challenged.

Stewart stepped up, and claimed his seventh goal of the season, an impressive return given that he was sidelined for the best part of three months.

The first half was a helter-skelter affair, with neither side able to exert any real control, although Sunderland were generally the more threatening team with the hosts going close again on the stroke of half-time.

The ball broke to Roberts on the edge of the area after Jack Clarke’s mazy run was halted, but the forward dragged a low effort wide of the right-hand post.

Sunderland were forced into a change at the start of the second half, with Trai Hume replacing the injured Cirkin, and the substitute full-back immediately went close with a strike from the left of the box that Blackburn goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski clawed away.

Kaminski made routine saves from both Stewart and Amad Diallo to ensure the scores remained level, with Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson producing an important stop at the other end with 18 minutes remaining as he kept out Morton’s low shot.

Simms’ winner came in the first minute of stoppage time, with the Everton loanee prodding home with the outside of his boot after Ballard squared the ball into his path.
