  • Karim Zito charges GFA to appoint experienced coach for Black Stars

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) should appoint an experienced coach for the Black Stars, according to Black Starlets head coach Abdul Karim Zito.

The four-time champion are without a coach after Otto Addo left the role following the Stars exit from the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Ghana finished bottom of Group H with three points after losing to Portugal and Uruguay, having beaten South Korea in between.

“Our players are young, so they need an experienced coach to guide these boys.”

“They are young and want to do everything for themselves so it will be prudent to get a senior coach to guide them,” he said.

Meanwhile, Karim Zito will steer the affairs of the Black Starlets for the next one year and will be assisted by Laryea Kingson and Jacob Nettey.

Karim Zito, who has managed Asante Kotoko, Accra Hearts of Oak, Feyenoord Academy (WAFA), King Faisal and Kwaebibirem FC is a gold medallist at the 2021 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

  • NFL: Jaguars stun Cowboys in overtime, Chiefs make play-offs & Brady blows lead

Two more thrilling overtime games saw the Kansas City Chiefs avoid a huge upset to book their play-off spot while the Dallas Cowboys suffered a shock defeat at the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Jaguars scored with a late pick six as Dallas blew a 17-point lead.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers also gave up the same lead as Tom Brady collected some unwanted records as he lost to Joe Burrow’s in-form Cincinnati Bengals.

Jalen Hurts ran the Philadelphia Eagles to a 13th win of the season.

After the Minnesota Vikings’ historic fightback on Saturday, the Jaguars and Bengals both added 17-point comebacks to mark the first time in league history three teams had overturned such a big deficit in the same week.

Meanwhile the resurgent Detroit Lions won yet again and have a chance of a play-off spot, as do the New York Giants after their important 20-12 victory against the Washington Commanders.

The Giants’ win handed Dallas a reprieve after their shock loss by sealing the Cowboys’ place in the play-offs.

Jaguars stun Cowboys, Chiefs escape in Houston

It looked an easy task on paper for the Chiefs to beat the one-win Houston Texans and claim a seventh straight AFC West title, but in the end they needed Jerick McKinnon’s touchdown run in overtime to claim a 30-24 win to get the job done.

Only the Patriots with 11 have a longer streak of divisional wins than Kansas City’s current dominant run, but with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback the Chiefs have found a rare level of consistency as they make yet another bid for the Super Bowl.

“I think one of the most difficult things in the National Football League is consistent success,” said Chiefs owner Clark Hunt.

“The rules are designed to make that difficult, whether that’s the draft or the salary cap. So, it’s a real testament to the job that general manager Brett Veach and coach Andy Reid have done over the last several years.”

While the Chiefs escaped, the Cowboys could not as they blew a 17-point lead to lose 40-34 thanks to Rayshawn Jenkins scoring an interception return touchdown for the Jaguars in overtime.

Jenkins took Dak Prescott’s tipped pass 52 yards to seal a big upset victory for the Jags who, helped by four Trevor Lawrence TD passes, moved to a 6-8 record that keeps them in touch in the AFC South after the Tennessee Titans lost against the Los Angeles Chargers.

“I was running for dear life,” Jenkins said. “My hamstrings about to pull and everything.”

Lions still hot as Eagles march towards top seed

Hurts threw two interceptions and no TDs, but that is no problem for the Eagles quarterback as instead he ran in three scores to help Philadelphia beat Chicago 25-20 to match their team record with a 13th win of the season.

It was also Hurts’ 13th rushing TD of the season, putting him just one behind the NFL quarterback record, while on the opposite side Justin Fields of the Bears also had a landmark night as he became just the third QB to reach 1,000 rushing yards in a season.

Chicago, though, have lost seven in a row and need a big improvement to give their star QB a chance next season, as Philly have done with Hurts, who is right there in the MVP picture after another all-round display.

The Detroit Lions turnaround could yet lead to an unlikely play-off spot because from a 1-6 start they are now 7-7 after Jared Goff threw a late 51-yard TD pass to Brock Wright to beat the New York Jets 20-17.

Both sides are now 7-7 and just outside the wildcard spots, but while the red-hot Lions are fancied to get back into the play-offs after six seasons, the Jets’ 11-year drought looks more likely to continue after three straight defeats.

Second-half Cincinnati stun Brady, Patriots self-destruct

Brady was 89-0 when holding a 17-point lead in home games over his career before the Buccaneers imploded to help the Cincinnati Bengals win 34-23 and go top of their division with an eighth win in nine.

In a classic game of two halves, the Bucs dominated to go in 17-3 at half time but Brady committed a career-high four turnovers on consecutive possessions in the second half to give Burrow the chance to throw four TD passes and win the game.

The Bucs still somehow top their division but Brady has now lost eight games in a season for the first time in his 23-year career, and needs to win the last three to avoid a first losing campaign in the NFL.

Brady’s former team the New England Patriots also pushed the self-destruct button as they found a spectacular way to lose to the Las Vegas Raiders on the very last play of the game.

With the game tied at 24-24 and heading for overtime, New England’s Jakobi Meyers tried a wild backwards pass to keep the last play of regular time alive, only to throw it straight to Chandler Jones, a former Patriot, who returned it 48 yards to grab victory for the Raiders out of nowhere.

Losing on such a huge mistake will likely have Bill Belichick seething, not least because it drops the Pats to 7-7 and facing a big scramble to grab a wildcard spot.

Elsewhere, the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Carolina Panthers 24-16, the New Orleans Saints were 21-18 winners against the Atlanta Falcons and Brett Rypien stood in for Russell Wilson as the Denver Broncos beat the Arizona Cardinals 24-15.

  • Elon Musk: Twitter users vote in favour of boss resigning

Twitter users have voted in favour of Elon Musk stepping down as the platform’s chief executive after the billionaire ran a poll on his future.

A total of 57.5% voted “yes” after Mr Musk asked his 122 million followers whether he should stand down.

Mr Musk, who bought Twitter for $44bn (£36bn), said before the poll closed that he would abide by the result.

The technology tycoon, who also runs Tesla and Space X, has faced much criticism since taking over the site.

Mr Musk is yet to comment since the poll closed. Even if he were to resign as chief executive, he would remain as Twitter’s owner.

About 17.5 million people voted in his poll on Monday.

In the past Mr Musk has obeyed Twitter polls. He’s fond of quoting the phrase “vox populi, vox dei”, a Latin phrase which roughly means “the voice of the people is the voice of God”.

A former Twitter member of staff, who left the company recently, told the BBC that Mr Musk was “showing himself to be the incompetent fool we all knew he was”.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, they added: “His investors are surely looking at this now and questioning whether he was the right horse to back.

“I imagine he’s getting pressure from investors to step down and is using this poll to make it look like he’s following the will of the people instead of the will of those paying his bills.”

Minutes before the polled closed, the founder of crypto exchange Binance replied to Mr Musk saying he should “stay the course” and not step down.

Changpeng Zhao is thought to be one of Twitter’s investors and said in May he had backed Mr Musk taking over by making a $500m investment.

Elon Musk: Twitter users vote in favour of boss resigning
Elon Musk was pictured with Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner watching the World Cup final in Qatar on Sunday

Dan Ives, senior equity analyst at Wedbush Securities, told the BBC before the poll closed that he believed the vote would “ultimately” lead to the “ending of Musk’s reign as chief executive of Twitter”.

There has been a flurry of controversial changes at Twitter since Mr Musk bought the social media site.

He has fired about half of its staff and attempted a rollout of Twitter’s paid-for verification feature before putting it on pause. The feature was relaunched last week.

He has also been criticised for his approach to content moderation, with some civil liberties groups accusing him of taking steps that will increase hate speech and misinformation.

On Friday, Mr Musk was condemned by the United Nations and European Union over Twitter’s decision to suspend some journalists who cover the social media firm.

The UN tweeted that media freedom is “not a toy”, while the EU threatened Twitter with sanctions.

    ‘Circus show’

Mr Ives said the last few weeks and months had been a “black eye for Musk and a black eye for Tesla” which he said was the “golden child” because it is where most of the billionaire’s wealth is.

“Twitter right now – it’s a quicksand situation and I think it’s gotten worse since Musk took over Twitter. It’s been a circus show,” he added.

“I think ultimately in the next 24 hours Musk will probably name a new temporary CEO of Twitter.”

After starting the poll, Mr Musk tweeted: “As the saying goes, be careful what you wish, as you might get it.”

He added later: “Those who want power are the ones who least deserve it.”

  • Tristan Thompson settles paternity case, will pay $9,500 a month in child support

The details of Tristan Thompson’s paternity settlement have been ironed out, and it looks like he’ll pay monthly child support to the mother of his 1-year-old son.

TMZ reports Thompson will give Maralee Nichols $9,500 every month for their son Theo, and will also pay for some of her legal expenses. According to sources, Nichols has sole custody and an official visitation plan will be resolved soon. Thompson’s name will also appear on the baby’s birth certificate.

While Thompson has made millions in the NBA during his career, his monthly child support has remained low because he isn’t signed to a team right now and isn’t earning, which is key when deciding on child support.

Theo turned one this December. Following his birth last year, Nichols filed a lawsuit against Thompson for child support, where she alleged that he tried to give her $75,000 in hush money so no one would find out about the baby.

“It feels so good to be home!” wrote Griner alongside a photo of her leaving the plane that brought her back to the States, and another of her hugging her wife Cherelle Griner. “The last 10 months have been a battle at every turn. I dug deep to keep my faith and it was the love from so many of you that helped keep me going. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone for your help.”

Griner thanked everyone who personally helped organize her release, including Cherelle and the Biden-Harris Administration. She also announced her intentions to play for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury this season.

Her family shared a statement to express “sincere gratitude” to Biden and others who helped end her wrongful detainment, which stemmed from her arrest in Moscow in February over the possession of hash oil cartridges.

  • How Africa’a richest man Aliko Dangote got $1.5B richer in November

One of the wealthiest people in Africa saw their net worth rise by $1.5 billion in November 2022, following a hefty $200 million spike in October.
With a net worth of $19.1 billion, Aliko Dangote ranks as the 81st richest person in the world.

His net worth increased by $1.5 billion in November, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which tracks and compares the fortunes of the 500 richest people in the world.
This saved losses of $611 million in the first few months of 2022, which is a very remarkable accomplishment.

The increase in wealth revealed in November is attributed to the rise in Dangote Cement Plc stock prices, which had a positive profit following several months of poor performances. Many people were impressed by the performance of this affiliate of Dangote companies and the profit it brought as a whole.

Aliko Dangote’s 86 per cent ownership of Dangote Cement, worth $8.64 billion, contributed significantly to his riches. His expanding wealth is also due to his $5 billion fertilizer factory, which can generate up to 2.8 million metric tonnes of urea yearly.

The Nigerian billionaire joined Abdul Samad Rabiu, who has seen a considerable boost in his fortune this year, with the billion-dollar increase in net worth that erased his year-to-date wealth loss of $611 million at the beginning of the month.

Aliko Dangote stated that as he continues to strategically invest in his sugar industry in compliance with the objectives of the Nigeria Sugar Master Plan, his investment will create 300,000 jobs for Nigeria. The Dangote Group, the big economic empire which deals mainly in industrial and food products is the most valuable company in West Africa and one of Nigeria’s top private employers.

How Aliko Dangote started his company from scratch will always inspire many entrepreneurs. He borrowed $3,000 from his uncle shortly after receiving his college degree at 21 to import and sell food products in Nigeria. He was successful and was able to pay back the debt in full within three months of operations. But Dangote did not just settle for selling local commodities; he had his eyes set on something bigger- building a global corporation- and he has carried on to become one of the greatest African success stories of today’s generation.

  • Economy is looking good but support with facts – Seth Terkper tells govt

Former finance minister, Seth Terkper, has said that Ghana’s economy is showing encouraging signals.

However, in order to help people make wise judgments, he asserted that the government must present data to back growing trends.

Addressing the media at the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) delegates conference at the Accra Sports Stadium, he said “The signs are looking good, but let us support that with actuality.”

He further advised the administration to bear responsibility for economic problems rather than blaming them solely on external factors.

His comments come on the back of positive signs seen with the cedi against the dollar.

The local currency has over the past few days, especially since the start of December 2022, been gaining strength against the major trading currencies particularly, the Dollar.

Per the Bank of Ghana (BoG) rate, the cedi, as of Thursday December 15, was buying at GHS7.9975 to a dollar and and selling at GHS8.0056 to a dollar.

The Ghana cedi on December 14, 2022, gained 5.6% value against the US dollar, resulting in a cumulative gain of approximately 33.6% in the month of December alone.

This put the cedi as the strongest performing currency against the American ‘greenback’ in December 2022.

The cedi slumped by more than 54% against the dollar before December 2022.

  • Young Thug’s court hearing interrupted by video of nude man on Zoom Call

Young Thug’s recent court hearing was interrupted after someone on the Zoom call showcased a pornographic video.

Per The Atlanta Journal Constitution, a Zoom call was set up in the courtroom to allow attorneys to tune into the hearing remotely, and at one point a video showing a completely naked man was showcased on the screens. The clip was accompanied by a message that read, “Free Young Thug.” In the moments the video was on display, deputies in the courtroom quickly tried to turn off the screens.

Despite the pornographic video causing a disturbance and a subsequent delay in the courtroom, Thugger was able to walk away with a win on Thursday. Per FOX5, Fulton County Judge Ural Glanville ruled that evidence seized during the raid on Thug’s home in 2015 could not be used against him as evidence in his upcoming trial. His defense argued that the raid was not lawful, and as such requested that all of seized property including a cell phone and a computer be returned to the rapper.

Prosecutors hoped to use the cell phone as evidence against Thug, real name Jeffery Lamar Williams, in next month’s trial.

The latest developments in Thug’s case comes as Gunna, who named alongside his close collaborator in a sweeping RICO indictment earlier this year, was freed from custody after accepting a plea deal.

  • Raid of ‘Real Housewives’ star Jen Shah’s home by feds turns up fake designer bags and jewelry

Jen Shah, who was featured on Bravo TV’s The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, has been at the center of a fraud case, with the investigation leading authorities to raid her home last year.

Now, a list of what the feds found at her home has been released. According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the sweep in March 2021 led to the discovery of a number of counterfeit designer handbags and jewelry at Shah’s home in Salt Lake City, Utah. Over 30 fake luxury purses and about 40 pieces of fake jewelry were found; among the fraudulent bags were Chanel, Balenciaga, Hermes, and Louis Vuitton, among others, and the knockoff jewels spanned Bulgari, Chanel, Cartier, Tiffany & Co, and more.

She was arrested in March 2021 for wire fraud and laundering, after authorities came to believe that she was cheating hundreds of people through a telemarketing scam. She later pleaded guilty in July and was instructed to pay $6.5 million of $9.5 million in restitution. The items that were found in the raid are meant to go toward the $6.5 million. In addition to the knockoff items, there were also some authentic designer pieces.

Shah had been facing up to 30 years in prison with supervised release for five years.

However, her plea agreement asked for 11 to 14 years in prison and restitution of up to $9.5 million. She will head back to court after the holiday season, according to Page Six.

One of the gas oil pipelines of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST) leading to its facility at Mami Water, a community in the Volta Region has reportedly been damaged.

  • Substance from pipeline near Atimpoku not diesel but sludge – BOST

The Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST), has shot down media publications that reported a liquid substance pouring out from an oil pipeline near Atimpoku as diesel.

Last weekend, it was reported that some residents near Atimpoku in the Eastern Region were scooping diesel from a faulty pipeline. Many rushed to the scene containers to siphon as much of the product as possible.

Reacting to the incident, BOST clarified that the liquid substace was sludge and not diesel as reported.

Sludge is a combination of water, dirt and fuel residue that was formed in the pipeline.

According to BOST, the sludge was spilled during testing of the integrity of a pipeline being refurbished.

“The pipeline had been decommissioned from 2015 due to vandalism of the line by unknown assailants. This resulted in BOST resorting to the use of Bulk Road Vehicles, popularly known as tankers in the haulage of petroleum Products from the Tema to the Akosombo Depot for onward transmission using river badges to the Buipe Depot in northern Ghana,” a statement from BOST read.

Repair works on the pipeline commenced a year ago and was expected to be completed by the third quarter of the year 2022.

However, due to the impact of the construction of the Railway Line from Tema to Mpakadan in the Volta region, the line had to be re-routed which affected the completion time.

For a proper assessment of the degree of damage at the commencement of the repair works, BOST noted that “water was pumped up the line to help with the full detection of all leakages for repairs.”

“It is this pressure testing which resulted in the pushout of a sludge in the Maame Water area which is being reported in the media,” the company explained.

  • Economic crisis: ‘Don’t be fooled by appreciation of the cedi’ – Ricketts-Hagan

Kweku George Ricketts-Hagan, the member of parliament for Cape Coast South, has said that contrary to what certain supporters of the government have claimed, Ghana’s economy is still in trouble.

He claims that because there is less demand for foreign cash, the Ghana cedi is now worth more than Ghana’s main trading currencies, including the US dollar.

On the other hand, he continued, the supply of dollars is growing since many Ghanaians are returning from overseas and others are sending remittances to their families.

“Don’t be fooled by the appreciation of the cedi you are seeing. It is not backed by anything. (It is happening) for the simple reason that we have a homecoming and there are a lot of inflows coming in,” he said.

“Obviously, getting a staff-level agreement has reduced the speculation. So, people who were holding on to the dollar knowing that Ghana’s economy is not going to get any better have now realised that the government will abandon its wasteful expenditure because of the IMF programme,” he added.

The MP, who was speaking to journalists on the side-line of the National Democratic Congress’ delegates congress, on December 17, 2022, however, said that the depreciation of the Ghana cedi will start again after the festive period.

“The same thing happened in 2019 when the Ghana cedi was the best-performing currency and after Christmas, it went back to the worst-performing,” he added.

The Ghana cedi, has, over the past few weeks, been gaining value against Ghana’s major trading currencies, including the US dollar.

Per data from the Bank of Ghana (BoG), the cedi, as of Thursday, December 15, was buying at GH¢7.9975 to a dollar and selling at GH¢8.0056 to a dollar.

Also, the prices of petroleum products have been dropping, which has led to public transport operators announcing an over 15 percent reduction in transportation fares.

Mr. Dhruva Sahai, Acting Country Manager, World Bank Ghana CMU, said PROBLUE initiatives are to assist the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development during a stakeholder session on Thursday in Accra.

“The reason behind this implementation is to eliminate extreme poverty and boost shared prosperity equitably and sustainably, thereby, reduce the negative effects of plastic pollution on livelihoods, the fisheries and tourism sectors.”

Mr Sahai disclosed that a World Bank team have been on the ground for the past few weeks for the advancement of PROBLUE activities and stocktaking of the existing landscape in Ghana for a successful implementation of the programme.

Mr Oliver Boachi, Special Advisor to the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation said PROBLUE’s activities would give an added impetus to Ghana’s effort to reduce marine pollution, as well as protect the environment.

He noted that the choice of Ghana as the Chair of the African Group of Negotiators of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee positioned the country to play a prominent role in addressing the devastating menace of plastic pollution.

“The PROBLUE support programme that the World Bank Group is providing to the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI), would effectively address the menace of plastic pollution in Ghana.

“This is perhaps the most significant and most ambitious attempt that the world is making to combat the devastating menace of plastic pollution,” he said.

Mr Grzegorz Peszko, a Lead Economist with the World Bank, called for partnerships within the plastic value chain to guarantee an integrated approach to addressing the problem to stimulate environmental, health and economic growth.

He also urged the Government to increase public financing and provide an enabling environment, including incentives for private sector investment, to support efforts to end the plastic waste threat.

Mr Peszko highlighted the need to put deliberate mechanisms in place to cause behavioural change to make Ghanaians see plastics as investment material rather than waste.

The World Bank Lead Economist said that such behavioural change would serve as the catalyst for the reduction of the indiscriminate disposal of plastic to reduce long-term environmental, health and economic impacts.

  • Amar’e Stoudemire arrested after allegedly punching and slapping daughter

Former NBA star Amar’e Stoudemire was arrested early Sunday morning after allegedly punching and slapping his teenage daughter.

According an arrest affidavit obtained by NBC News, Stoudemire entered his daughter’s room and asked her about “giving attitude” to her grandmother when she allegedly called her name and responded by saying, “What?” His unidentified daughter said she wasn’t giving her attitude, but Stoudemire allegedly interpreted her response as “talking back again,” sparking his alleged violent reaction.

Stoudemire allegedly punched her in the jaw, slapped her across the face, and struck her body.

When police arrived at his Miami condo, they allegedly noticed blood stains on her sweater and pants. The police report claims Stoudemire explained to officers that “she had received a whooping from him for being disrespectful and a liar,” but refused to get into further details.

It appears Alexis, mother of the daughter involved in the incident, called 911 after receiving a picture of her crying as blood was streaming down her face. Alexis allegedly arrived at the condo where she showed the photo to authorities and told them that Stoudemire “told her to come pick up the victim because she was being disrespectful.”

Stoudemire has been charged with one count of misdemeanor battery and one count of domestic violence. He was released from custody after posting a $1,500 bond.

The alleged incident occurred one day after earning a Master of Business Administration at the University of Miami.

  • Big Sean hints at marriage with Ring in new studio footage

Just a month after Big Sean and Jhené Aiko welcomed their first child into the world, the Detroit rapper has sparked marriage rumors after displaying what appeared to be a wedding ring in a new social media post.

Big Sean took to Instagram this weekend to tease new music, posting a video in which he raps along to a song off Ab-Soul’s new album during a studio session. “Listening back to my Verse i did for my brother @abdashsoul when i recorded it,” Sean wrote in his tweet.

At one point in the clip, Sean holds up his ring finger, displaying a shiny new gold ring. It didn’t take long before fans began speculating that the Detroit rapper and Aiko had secretly tied the knot.

Back in November, Aiko hopped on Instagram to announce the birth of her and Sean’s first child together, a healthy baby boy named Noah Hasani. The singer-songwriter shared a series of hospital photos of the baby, who was born on Nov. 8.

  • No Live Coverage for Ghana Premier League match between Karela United and Medeama

There will be no Live Coverage of the Ghana Premier League biggest match of the week between Karela United and Medeama at Aiyinase on Wednesday.

Premier League television right holders StarTimes will not telecast the most anticipated match in the wake of the return of the country’s top-flight after the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

This is remarkably shocking given that the Western derby is the biggest fixture of the week in the Ghana Premier League.

Cash-strapped Karela United host neighbours Medeama in an explosive Western derby on the return of the Ghana Premier League on Wednesday.

The Aiyinase-based has been purchased by top Ghanaian politician Haruna Iddrisu.

The Minority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament and representative for Tamale South Constituency, who owns Division One League side Steadfast FC, has secured the top-flight status of the Nzema-Aiyinase-based side.

Ghana’s leading football website, www.ghanasoccernet.com, understands the deal was stitched up even before the 2022 FIFA World Cup break.

It is expected that the new owners will relocate the club to the Northern part of Ghana and continue playing in the Ghana top-flight.

But it is unknown if the change of name will happen anytime soon or until the end of the season.

But coach Bismark Kobi Mensah’s charges must put the boardroom drama behind them when they host the rejuvenated Mauve and Yellows.

Karela United have lost once at home since last season – a 1-0 loss to King Faisal 1-0 on Matchday 7.

Medeama SC are unbeaten in their last two games, drawing one against Gold Stars 0-0 and winning against Kotoku Royals 1-0.

The stakes are always high for these two protagonist in the Western derby with fans expected to be served with another riveting game at the Crossby Awuah Memorial Park.

After eight rounds of matches, Karela United are 14th on the table with 10 points from the available 24.

Karela United have faced financial difficulties since the death of rich owner Senator David Brigidi in 2018.

The former Nigerian senator bought Metro Stars FC in October 2013 and with financial injection, he qualified the team to elite division five years.

He was the owner of Karela Oil & Gas in Ghana and Nigeria, Karela Hotels & Resort Ghana, Re-Routine Air Limited, Adef Energy Services, Shores & Savannah (Law Partners) and South Field Petroleum.

  • World Bank secures $1.5m to help tackle marine pollution in Ghana

The World Bank has received a grant of US$1.5 million for the execution of measures aimed at combating marine and plastic pollution in Ghana.

A multi-donor trust fund partnership known as PROBLUE, which promotes integrated and sustainable economic growth in ocean health, provided the funding for the project.

On Friday, December 16, the acting Country Manager of the World Bank, Mr Dhruval Sahai, made this known at a one-day workshop aimed at enhancing the regulatory framework for minimizing marine litter and pollution in the Greater Accra Region.

According to Mr. Sahai, a World Bank team has been in Ghana for the past weeks to enhance PROBLUE efforts and take an inventory of the country’s current landscape in preparation for the program’s successful implementation.

He added that Ghana has achieved significant improvements in its collection and treatment of plastic trash and is now serving as a role model to other countries in terms of the recycling and reuse of waste.

“The reason behind this implementation is to eliminate extreme poverty and boost shared prosperity equitably and sustainably, thereby, reduce the negative effects of plastic pollution on livelihoods, the fisheries and tourism sectors,” he stated.

The World Bank’s two main objectives, he said, are eradicating extreme poverty and fostering shared prosperity in an equitable and sustainable manner.

The acting Country Manager of the World Bank emphasized that these goals were in conflict with the project due to plastic pollution, hence threatening public health by increasing flooding risks.

The COVID-19 pandemic, according to him, has had a significant toll on waste management efforts.

The operations of PROBLUE, as per Special Advisor to the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Mr. Oliver Boachi, will provide Ghana’s efforts to minimize marine pollution and protect the environment an additional boost.

He pointed out that Ghana’s selection to lead the African Group of Negotiators under the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee provided it a unique opportunity to lead the fight against the dire threat of plastic pollution.

The World Bank’s Lead Economist, Mr. Grzegorz Peszko, called for collaborations along the plastic value chain to ensure an integrated strategy for tackling the issue and to promote growth in the areas of the environment, human health, and the economy.

Additionally, he asked the government to increase public funding and create an environment that is supportive of measures to reduce the threat posed by plastic trash, especially by offering incentives for private sector investment.

Mr. Peszko emphasized the necessity of putting deliberate procedures in place to bring about a behavioral change so that Ghanaians regard plastics as investment materials rather than waste.

He concluded that this would decrease the open dumping of polyethylene, thus having a negative impact on the environment, human health, and the economy in the long run.

The World Bank is a global financial organization that offers grants and loans to governments in low- and middle-income nations so they can carry out major projects.

  • Nick Cannon says he feels ‘guilt’ because he isn’t able to ‘spend enough time with all my children’

Juggling family and work has been difficult for Nick Cannon.

The actor and host opened up about his family life in a new episode of Paramount+’s The Checkup with Dr. David Agus, where Cannon said, “Being a father of multiple kids, it’s always the biggest guilt on me is that I don’t get to spend enough time with all my children.” He continued, “One ’cause I’m constantly working and two because I’m just spread thin.”

Cannon currently has 11 children and is expecting his 12th with Abby De La Rosa. He shares 18-month-old twin sons Zion and Zillion and daughter Beautiful Zeppelin with Rosa as well.

Lil Duval commented on The Shaderoom’s post about Cannon’s feelings, and it seems the father of 11 had time to respond. There was more tension in the comments than on two battling drum lines.

Cannon’s oldest kids are 11-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe, whom he shares with ex-wife Mariah Carey. He has three kids, Golden, Princess, and Rise with his ex, Brittany Bell, and a 5-month-old son Legendary Love with Brie Tiesi. He has another 3-month-old daughter, Onyx Ice with LaNisha Cole. He is expecting a child with Alyssa Scott. The pair shared another child together, Zen, who died from brain cancer when he was 5 months old.

Earlier this month marked the one-year anniversary of Zen’s passing. Cannon paid tribute to his son with an Instagram post: “I can’t believe it’s been a year already since the toughest day of my life occurred,” Cannon wrote. “Such a painful anniversary. Losing a child has to be the heaviest, most dark, and depressive experience that I will never get over. A mixture of guilt, pain, and sorrow is what I suppress daily.”

  • Meet 7 richest Black women in the USA as of December 2022

Black businesswomen in the United States had a prosperous year because a number of them had their wealth rise sharply as a result of new contracts, acquisitions, and company growth.

For instance, Emma Grede’s net worth has increased.
Grede’s net worth as of right now is $360 million, and it comes from businesses like Kim Kardashian’s shapewear line Skims and the size-inclusive clothing line Good American, which she co-founded with Khloe Kardashian in 2016.

Not all Black businesswomen in the US, meanwhile, were as lucky this year.
Some people’s net worth decreased as a result of rising interest rates, the uneven recovery of the epidemic, and market instability brought on by the war in Europe, including billionaire Robyn “Rihanna” Fenty, who owns a cosmetics company.

Despite these challenges, many Black businesswomen in the United States were able to achieve success and increase their wealth, showcasing their hard work, determination, and resilience.

It is important to recognize and celebrate these achievements, as they inspire and encourage other women of color to pursue their entrepreneurial goals.

According to data from Forbes, here is how these businesswomen rank.

To preserve and grow her fortune over time, the leading media mogul has reinvested profits from her show, as well as profits from films like “The Color Purple,” “Beloved,” and “Selma,” into key assets and entities in the media industry.

This year, Oprah faced some setbacks, including a decrease in her net worth from $2.6 billion at the start of the year.

Despite these challenges, Oprah’s media empire continues to thrive, thanks to her shrewd business acumen and her determination to succeed.

She recently earned $6.6 million from the sale of her Montecito estate in California, which she had purchased for $10.5 million just a year ago.

    2. Robyn “Rihanna” Fenty

    Net worth: $1.4 billion

    Source: Music and Cosmetics

Fenty’s main source of wealth is her cosmetics company, Fenty Beauty, which she launched in collaboration with LVMH Mot Hennessy Louis Vuitton in 2017.

The company sells makeup and skincare products on Sephora shelves and online to more than 150 countries, and is expected to bring in over $550 million in revenue in 2020.

In addition to Fenty Beauty, Rihanna has recently filed two applications for Fenty Hair with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, indicating her plans to launch a haircare line under the Fenty brand.

The Fenty Hair collection will include a range of accessories such as hairbands, bows, clips, ribbons, scrunchies, wigs, curlers, pins, brushes, and combs, further expanding the Fenty brand’s presence in the fashion and cosmetics industries.

Disappointed by their unexplained act, Waddle listed the number of times he has promoted the works of the Tema artistes and his dedication to promoting their music.

“For 20 years I have served, worshiped, promoted and stayed loyal to R2bees, from camp yard days, long before paedae reformed it to R2bees, the kinda pain and insults I’ve received for that 20 years. only jah knows,” a separate post read.

According to Waddle, the management of King Promise has continuously turned down his request for a collaboration.

Also, sound engineer, Killbeatz was not left out of the ‘name and shame’ rants made by Waddle on December 18.

“Now I understand why me and king promise our song never happen G @kilbeatz ghl dier you tomorrow way I go talk my matter.

“@ohene faruku u still Dey manage king promise?so u watch promise go perform for Gyakie en show under way u no fit tell am say bro make we pass Waddle and mekidal their show under for 5 minutes them too be family?”

  • NEDCo special revenue protection taskforce launched

The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) special revenue protection taskforce was established by Minister of Energy Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh at Yendi in the Northern region.

The task force’s goal is to launch an aggressive campaign to mobilize money for NEDCo in its operational locations.

In addition to Terence Ninnang, who serves as Chairman of the Special Revenue Protection Taskforce, the group’s other members include Ali Phillip, Hilda Alhassan, Abdul-Malik Hussein, Winfred Sewua, Ayishetu Ayamga, Elvis Demuyakor, John Yamoah, and Alexander Otu-Larbi.

Dr. Prempeh disclosed that the king of Dagbon, Ndan Ya Na Abubakari II, has been appointed as an automatic member of the Special Revenue Protection Taskforce to serve as an ambassador and ensure effective collection of revenue for needed development in the region’s energy sector.

The energy minister called for support from the king of Dagbon to help NEDCo officials with the installation of new pre-paid meters in Dagbon.

The Managing Director of NEDCo, Osmani Aludiba Ayuba, lamented the increasing rate of power-theft – noting that the sustainability of NEDCo is under threat.

He said losses in the Northern area, Tamale in particular, constitute an existential threat to NEDCo. Whereas losses in the Northern area are around 45 percent, the case in Tamale Township is around 48 percent. “The power-theft situation in Tamale, if not addressed immediately, can cause the collapse of NEDCo in the very foreseeable future.”

Mr. Ayuba stated they have procured some smart pre-payment meters, mainly to replace the other types that lend themselves more readily to manipulation and power-theft.

The NEDCo Managing Director said management, under the auspices of the Ministry of Energy, has constituted the Special Revenue Protection Taskforce to help collect revenue in the region.

“We have put in some pragmatic steps toward improving our overall customer-centredness with your support and cooperation.”

The king of Dagbon, Ndan Ya Na Abubakari II, commanded government for its continuous commitment to providing affordable electricity for Ghanaians.

He said it is breathtaking to see the determination of government through the Ministry of Energy to provide affordable electricity for Ghanaians in furtherance of government’s pledge to the Ghanaian people.

“The good leadership you exhibit at your ministry has sown a seed of hope and expectation in the people for government.”

According to Ndan Ya Na Abukari II, during the Energy Minister’s efforts, the Dagbon kingdom has experienced for the first time the building of eight solar power plants by Ghana’s Bui Power Authority with a total capacity of 259 MWp, in Yendi and other parts of the Northern Region.

He said building the solar power plants will consolidate the development of renewable energy in Ghana, adding: “The plants location sites in the north include Yendi, Buipe and Sawla in the Savannah Region, and Zebilla and Bolgatanga in the Upper East region – which is a blessing for the people of Dagbon and the north as a whole”.

Ndan Ya Na noted that apart from the plants’ intended purpose of providing a reliable and affordable power supply, they will also serve as a source of employment for people in the country’s northern parts.

He however appealed for government to speed up the ongoing rural electrification projects in the kingdom, and also consider the remaining communities which are yet to be awarded on contract.

“I believe that the efforts by government in the energy sector will help address some challenges in other sectors of our economy.”

  • Ghana FA orders Hearts of Oak to pay over $12,000 to coaches Hamza Obeng and Eric Amponsah

Ghana FA has ordered Hearts of Oak to pay Hamza Obeng and Eric Amponsah a combined $12,000 (GHs 110,000) as compensation for terminating their contracts unlawfully, according to reports.

The Ghanaian giants terminated the contract of assistant coach Hamza Obeng and goalkeepers’ coach Eric Amponsah despite helping the side to win five major titles in 18 months.

Hearts of Oak have been given two-weeks to pay the compensation to the former employees.

Obeng, a former  Medeama assistant coach demanded for a  compensation of  GHS 105, 000 for breach of contract and 5% interest from October 1, 2022 “until the date of effective payment”.

The humble and ever-smiling tactician also demanded an outstanding one time payment of GHS 30,000 ‘meant to have been paid at the time of signing the contract, including 5% interest from the 17th  of March, 20221 until effective date of payment”.

The young gaffer also demanded for an outstanding bonuses for the MTN FA Cup totaling GHs 2,475.

The Phobians parted ways with the the highly-rated young gaffer together with his former boss Samuel Boadu in September.

Both coaches were forced to take the legal route reluctantly after separate reminders to the club demanding for his entitlement fell on deaf ears with no clear-cut response from the Ghanaian giants.

They were left unhappy and frustrated over the club’s treatment and has now been forced to notify the governing body over the situation.

Both Hamza Obeng and goalkeepers coach Eric Amponsah agreed to step down on huge demands and are now asking for the termination clause to be respected.

Reports indicated Hearts of Oak are yet to fulfil their financial obligation to Hamza Obeng despite fulfilling settling his former boss Samuel Boadu.

The Kumasi-born coach feels disappointed and betrayed after being sacked one and a half years into their three-and-half-year contracts.

He signed a three-and-half-year deal with the former African champions but was shown the exit door following unflattering results.

He won five major titles for the Phobians in 18 months.

  • Get to work, shorten your celebration – Mahama to NDC national executives

Former president John Dramani Mahama has instructed the newly elected national executives of the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) to fasten their belts as work will begin immediately.

He described the 2024 general election as crucial and said the difficult task ahead demands the executives’ undivided focus while carrying out their mandates.

Delivering a speech at the just-ended national congress, the 2020 presidential candidate of the NDC said “We must cut the celebration and set to work immediately.”

“These executives have been elected by the delegates to serve a mandate until 2026 and it is going to be a very important mandate because a most critical election with a higher stake is due in 2024 and these executives are going to oversee it.

“I believe they understand the responsibility that has been thrust on their shoulders. So this celebration must be very short. We must cut the celebration and set to work immediately,” he stressed on Sunday morning.

Further urging unity following the internal elections, Mr. Mahama entreated both election winners and losers to take part in amicable activities.

He claims that there is space under the umbrella, the symbol of the NDC, for anyone.

“We are all the winners, but those who were elected must be gracious in victory and those who have lost, let us understand that there is a lot of room under the umbrella.

“The party might be asking them to serve in other capacities and we are all going to work together to ensure that those who were not elected have a role to play in the victory of 2024,” he noted.

  • MESTI secures US$7m to strengthen national circular economy capacity

The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI) has obtained US$7m funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) toward the establishment of a circular economy framework for the plastic sector in order to improve the nation’s capacity to make the transition to a circular economy.

In order to ensure that the nation transitions from the existing linear manner of production to a more sustainable way, the ministry claims that after visiting various value chain participants, it became clear that a circular economy framework was required.

As long as practicable, manufacturing and consumption under the circular economy framework will involve reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling current resources and goods.

“The objective of the project is to strengthen the national capacity of Ghana to transition to a circular economy within a framework that addresses plastic leakage into the country’s oceans and waterways; facilitates sustainable plastics management through operationalising the National Plastic Management Policy (NPMP) and National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP/GPAP); and ultimately end marine plastic pollution and reduce the unintentional emissions of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs),” noted the special advisor to the minister, Oliver Boachie.”

He said this at the inception workshop of the ‘Establishing a Circular Economy Framework for the Plastics Sector in Ghana’ (CEF-PS) project, which was launched on 7th May 2022.

“We have been working closely with UNIDO (Implementing agency) and they have helped us to secure some funding from the GEF. The funding we are talking about is the US$7milliion that we have received. The US$7million is for the establishment of a circular economy framework for the plastic sector in the country,” the Director of Policy, Planning Monitoring and Evaluation (PPME) at MESTI, Lydia Essuah, iterated.

For his part Ag. Chief Director-MESTI, Constant Gladzah, added that the move presents a model that has the potential to grow the economy and safeguard the future of generations yet unborn.

“Applying the principles and practices of circularity throughout the full lifecycle of the plastics value chain represents the safest way to manage plastics: from its design and production, through its consumption and disposal, and to its processing into secondary material for circular production.

“The implementation of this project will bring together a wide range of government actors, academia and private sector actors from across the country to work in applying technology to address plastic pollution, waste management and efficient resource utilisation,” he said.

The project will provide support to small- and medium-size enterprises operating within the plastics value chain.

The support is expected to build their capacity and scale-up their operations, in order to strategically position them to attract investment and technical know-how that will make their businesses profitable.

The project will be executed over a five-year duration.

  • Cancer should be covered by National Insurance in all countries – Rebecca Akufo-Addo

Ghana’s First Lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has highlighted the need to promote early diagnosis and the accessibility of diagnostic tools in the treatment of all cancers at the just ended U.S.-Africa Leaders’ Summit Spousal Program conducted in the USA.

In a speech at a gathering organized by Dr. Jill Biden, Mrs. Akufo-Addo emphasized the necessity for all cancers to be covered by national insurance programs.

About 21 wives of African leaders attended the REACH meeting, which took place at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, and covered common passions for cancer prevention.

The US-Africa Summit, which included high-level meetings between African leaders and representatives of the Biden-Harris administration, was held concurrently with the cancer summit. The US-Africa Summit sought to strengthen existing alliances in order to address important global issues like national security, food security, climate change, trade, and health.

The meeting’s main focal point was the issue of global cancer prevention and treatment.

Mrs. Akufo-Addo noted several knowledge gaps in cancers affecting women and children and suggested solutions to fill them.

According to her, problems including a lack of awareness and information, late arrival at medical facilities, cancer-causing lifestyle habits, and the expense of treatment are what are preventing many nations from making headway in the fight against cancer.

In order to address the lack of understanding about the illness and its treatments, she advised ongoing media campaigns as well as required routine check-ups every two or five years, depending on age and family history.

She claimed that better dietary decisions and a decrease in the intake of processed, fatty, and alcoholic beverages will both contribute to the eradication of cancer disorders.

Education and training for medical staff, such as cancer specialists for prompt diagnosis, could be another area of investigation.

Mrs. Akufo-Addo said, “We should have coordinated national initiatives to immunise young girls with the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical malignancies.”

She noted that she has been able to get Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme to cover four childhood cancers which make up about 60 per cent of childhood cancers.

“These are Burkitt Lymphoma, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Wilms tumor and Retinoblastoma, “she stated.

“My Foundation also raised money to build a 54-bed hostel for children receiving cancer treatment at our major teaching hospital. This helps to reduce cost of treatment and ensure treatment compliance.”

The First Lady further said together with Roche and the Ghana Health Service, “we are currently conducting education on breast and cervical cancers, training health personnel, screening, referring suspected cases to bigger facilities and treating early-stage cervical cancers with thermal coagulation machines. “

In the meantime, Dr. Biden has announced new initiatives by the White House’s Cancer Moonshot initiative to reduce the “cancer burden” in Africa at the U.S.-Africa Leaders’ Summit event, which took place from December 13 to 15, 2022. These initiatives include funding totaling about $300 million from the U.S. government and its private-sector partners.

Dr. Biden, who has made the fight against cancer a pillar of her work as first lady, shared that when her husband, President Joe Biden, was elected to office and a promise never to waste “this platform”, but to use it to shine a light on issues that she had been working on for many years.

She tasked her colleagues with making every effort to guarantee that they reduced the difficulties and suffering brought on by cancer in the various nations.

“As spouses, we serve the people of our countries, too, ” she stated.

African first ladies who attended the summit included that of Ghana, Cameroon, Liberia, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Madagascar, among others.

Cancer research and the enhancement of women’s and children’s health have been given top priority by the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD).

The USA is responding to OAFLAD’s request for more effective cancer prevention strategies, including the application of cutting-edge technologies for palliative care, cancer diagnosis, treatment, and screening.

  • Minority chastises Akufo-Addo over Wagner comment

President Akufo-Addo’s recent comment about Burkina Faso hiring Russian mercenaries has ignited foreign diplomatic concerns from the Minority in Parliament.

Speaking to reporters alongside U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on, December 14, the president alleged that Burkina Faso had hired Russian mercenaries and offered Wagner a mine as payment.

“Today, Russian mercenaries are on our northern border. Burkina Faso has now entered into an arrangement to go along with Mali in employing the Wagner forces there,” Akufo-Addo said.

Displeased with his utterance, Minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu, asserted that Ghana may suffer at the hands of Russia should they take offence at the president’s comment.

“For those who listened to him, a former Foreign Affairs Minister, former Attorney General he simply failed to momentarily have impulse control and to ensure a balance between foreign policy and security the security of our state as he openly condemned Burkina Faso and mentioned the Wagner group of Russia.

“He cannot provide us with food, he should not let them bring guns on us as a country,” the Minority leader said.

Also, a member of the Minority Group, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, noted that “Ghana cannot afford to be seen as a meddlesome busybody in the ongoing contentious reassessment and reconfiguration of colonial ties with France and the forging of new relationships by some Francophone African nations.”

While delivering a speech at the just-ended NDC National Delegates Conference last week, Mr Iddrisu announced that his side on the Foreign Affairs Committee will ask for a detailed briefing to Parliament concerning the President’s remarks.

Following the president’s comments, Burkina Faso summoned the Ghanaian ambassador for explanations.

In a statement issued after the meeting with the ambassador, Burkina Faso’s foreign ministry said it had “expressed disapproval” about the statements made by the Ghanaian president.

“Ghana could have undertaken exchanges with the Burkinabe authorities on the security issue in order to have the right information,” it said.

In a Facebook post last weekend, the North Tongu legislator, Mr Okudzeto Ablakwa, revealed that Moscow is considering its own response.

The prospect of Wagner expanding its presence in Africa has troubled Western powers such as France and the US, who say the group exploits mineral resources and commits human rights abuses in countries where it operates, according to international tabloids.

  • We will put our lives on the line to free Ghanaians in 2024 – Asiedu Nketiah

Chairman-elect of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on behalf of the newly elected national executives has pledged to lead the party to victory in the 2024 general elections by hook or crook.

Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, while delivering his victory speech on Sunday, December 18, mentioned that a huge responsibility has been placed on the leadership of the party and he will ensure that the executives execute their mandate to ensure the party’s goal is realised in the next two years.

“You the delegates of our party have given us the mandate to secure the second independence of Ghana.

“We know the path will not be smooth but we will stand up to the challenge and we are prepared to sacrifice everything and I mean everything including our lives to make sure this country is delivered,” he said.

The former General Secretary of the party managed to oust Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, his immediate predecessor in the chairmanship race when the opposition party concluded its election at its 10th National Delegates Congress held at the Accra Sports Stadium last weekend.

Mr Asiedu Nketiah received 65.17% of the votes cast while his closest contender, Mr Ofosu-Ampofo secured  33.81% of the votes cast.

Despite the propaganda that went on ahead of the elections and the fierce contest between the two competitors, Mr Aseidu Nketiah has assured that the recent relection will in no way mar the cordial relationship he has with Mr Ofosu-Ampofo.

He pledged to protect the bond he has developed with his former boss, who has been an ally for 25 years.

“I will like to thank, most importantly, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo who has been my friend for 25 years. I value the friendship, so I don’t think we are going to sacrifice that friendship because of this contest,” he said.

Should the NDC stand a chance to claim power from the ruling party, New Patriotic Party (NPP), it would have to mend what has been broken and ensure unity remains one of the strongest virtues it possesses ahead of the 2024 polls.

The ruling government is however committed to breaking the 8-year-cycle gifted to political parties since 2000 and enjoy another 4-year-term to govern the people of Ghana.

  • Ten memorable impressions from the Qatar World Cup

The Qatar World Cup has delivered a rich feast of soccer for the past month, with shocks, great goals, incredible celebrations and record-breaking feats served up by the assembled cast.

Here are 10 of the highlights as chosen by the Reuters team of reporters covering the tournament.

    • SAUDI ARABIA STUN ARGENTINA

Argentina were cruising in their opening Group C game after Lionel Messi scored a first-half penalty. But the Green Falcons swooped after halftime with Saleh Al-Shehri squeezing in a low shot to equalise and five minutes later Salem Al-Dawsari curled in a scorching second to leave Argentina in disbelief and Saudi fans joyously singing ‘where is Messi?’.

    • SOUTH KOREA’S NERVOUS WAIT

When Hwang Hee-chan scored a stoppage-time winner for South Korea in their final Group H game the hard part was just starting. The Korean players then had to spend almost 10 agonising minutes in a tight huddle in the centre circle peering at phones, hoping Uruguay would not score another goal against Ghana. Finally, with a last-16 place assured, they sprinted en masse towards their delirious fans.

    • MAGICAL MESSI BAMBOOZLES CROATIAN GVARDIOL

Such has been the Argentine number 10s impact in Qatar that the seven-time Ballon D’or winner could have multiple entries on the memorable list. But the way he held off Croatia’s masked defender Josko Gvardiol, then bamboozled him with an electrifying twist to set up the third goal in a 3-0 semifinal win encapsulated the 35-year-old’s genius.

    • RONALDO EXITS FINAL WORLD CUP IN TEARS

Portugal’s talisman became the first male player to score in five World Cups with a penalty against Ghana. But the 37-year-old was subsequently left out of the starting line-up and after he was unable to save his side after coming off the bench in the quarterfinal against Morocco he was filmed walking down the tunnel in floods of tears.

    • FIRST FEMALE REFEREE AT A MEN’S WORLD CUP

Frenchwoman Stephanie Frappart was handed control of Germany’s final Group E clash against Costa Rica, becoming the first female referee to officiate at a men’s World Cup.

Costa Rica coach Luis Fernando Suarez described it as a big step forward in ‘sexist sport’ and the 39-year-old Frappart produced a calm and assured display in Germany’s victory.

    • JAPAN HIT BACK TO SHOCK GERMANY

Before kickoff, in their Group E opener Germany’s players covered their mouths in protest at Fifa’s threat of sanctions against the wearing of the ‘OneLove’ armband.

At the final whistle, they were left gobsmacked after Japan’s substitutes Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano secured an unlikely 2-1 comeback win for the Samurai Blue whose fans celebrated hard before bagging the litter in the stadium.

    • MOROCCO’S FANS

Thousands of them descended on the Arabian Gulf to roar the Atlas Lions and were richly rewarded as Morocco became the first African and first Arab country to reach the semifinals.

The noise the red-clad hordes created in the stadiums was deafening and reached fever pitch in the penalty shootout defeat of Spain in the last 16 and against Portugal in the quarterfinals when a cacophony of whistles greeted every touch by the opposition as Morocco protected their 1-0 lead.

    • GROUP E FINALE MAYHEM

A group that began with Germany losing to Japan and Spain putting seven goals past Costa Rica concluded on a tumultuous night that almost turned the football world upside-down.

Germany needed a win over Costa Rica and for Spain to beat Japan to go through as runners-up, and at halftime that was exactly what was happening. Then everything went mad.

Japan scored twice in three minutes early in the second half and Costa Rica flipped their game against Germany to lead and for four minutes the live table showed Japan and Costa Rica in first and second place with Spain and Germany going home.

Germany ended up winning 4-2 to save Spain’s bacon, although they were on the flight home the next day.

    • CAMEROON’S ABOUBAKAR SINKS BRAZIL, THEN SENT OFF

A manic group phase concluded in almost comical fashion as Cameroon’s Vincent Aboubakar scored a stoppage-time winner against an already-qualified Brazil, took his shirt off, and was immediately given a second yellow card by an apologetic referee who shook the player’s hand.

    • MBAPPE-MESSI SHOW FINAL

Lionel Messi rubber-stamped his greatness and Kylian Mbappe enhanced his reputation as one of the best players in the world in Qatar and the Frenchman was simply unplayable in the final against France.

First, he converted from the penalty spot to cut Argentina’s 2-0 lead into half then 97 seconds later glided onto dinking ball behind the Argentina defence to fire past Martinez to send the match into extra time.

Argentina again, thought they had won it in extra time when Hugo Lloris failed to handle the ball and it fell in the path of Lionel Messi who fired home but Mbappe was at it again coming up with an equalizer from the penalty spot sending one of the greatest football matches to the dreaded penalty shootout.

  • EXPLAINER: The low-hanging fruit of property taxes

Property taxes are the most progressive tax government can use to mobilise revenue for development. Though the 2023 budget makes some new innovations in mobilising property rates through a Unified Property Rate Platform programme to be deployed by the Ghana Revenue Authority, government needs to take a critical look at other forms of property taxes.

Generally, property taxes fall into two distinct categories: (1) annual levies on properties; (2) levies on property transactions, stamp duty, inheritance tax, capital gains tax, property income tax, etc. All these taxes are in the various statutes, yet government is unable to optimise the mobilisation of these taxes. The 2023 budget indicates there is going to be an aggressive move on property rates.

However, the property rate tax is just one of many property taxes and can’t be the sole focus of government. Furthermore, the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) makes an exemption for uncompleted buildings, public hospitals and clinics, charitable or public educational worship places registered with the District Assembly, premises owned by diplomatic missions approved by the Minister responsible for Foreign Affairs, and cemeteries and burial grounds registered by the District Assembly.

Some amendments in the Act will be required due to the following reasons, to enable government to achieve the needed property rate income.

    1. We live in a country where most homeowners build their houses in phases. Typically, people spend between 3-4 years to complete their personal homes. The 2020 Housing & Population census recorded that a total 10,661,421 million structures were identified in the country, of which 80% percent were fully completed.

    2. Some of these uncompleted structures have been rented out to people, and it is only fair to amend the Act to charge property rates on those categories. A special exemption can be given to uncompleted and unoccupied structures.

    3. It is high time we saw cemeteries and burial grounds as businesses. There are private cemeteries and burial grounds making millions of cedis. We need to take a second look at their exemptions.

    4. Embassies and foreign missions are usually located in prime areas of the country, with huge buildings. We need to do a global assessment to see if Ghana Embassies and missions are also exempted from property rates or any taxes of that nature. If our embassies and foreign missions are required to pay these taxes, we need to amend our Act accordingly.

Some worship-places are currently using their facilities for commercial activities other than their intended purpose. Some Churches have media houses (TV and radio stations) that are purely profit-driven, hence there is no good reason why they should be exempted from property rates.

In general, the soundness of a taxation system depends on its economic efficiency, incidence and ease of administration. The Ghana Revenue Authority has delegated the task of stamp duty assessment to the Lands Commission, and it hasn’t been the best of service so far – especially in Accra.

Currently, you should be expecting 4 weeks or more turnaround time for your stamp duty assessment and payment on your landed and other types of documents. It looks like the GRA has not yet realised its potential in property tax mobilisation.

GRA has several offices across the country. I see them as one of the most decentralised government agencies in the country. Stamp duty is one of the property taxes that need serious attention and plugging of all its leakages.

How can this be achieved? Stamp duty assessment is guided by a statute – Stamp Duty Act, 2005 (Act 689), and in my opinion is one of the easiest valuations to do for landed documents. What’s required of GRA to deliver stamp duty assessment and payment? Government has done extremely well in implementing the ghana.gov portal, making it possible to make payments of stamp duty and other land-related invoices at various agencies.

GRA needs to recruit its own Valuers in all its offices to focus on stamp duty and other property taxes assessments, as desired by the Authority. These Valuers should be in charge of assessing property transactions, and clients can access the ghana.gov portal for payment.

The GRA also needs to invest in a data infrastructure that aggregates real estate data and mass property valuation across the country. The GRA is able to determine the market value of your car when it arrives at the harbour, so as to charge the appropriate import duty.

Properties are deliberately under-valued so that people can underpay the stamp duty tax. How can we correct this leakage? We can learn some lessons from how things are done at the port. GRA should invest in credible data that can be used for stamp duty assessment.

Curiously, taxes on property transactions may not be in the limelight of political discourse, but the GRA needs to shift its focus to this category. Property rates are levied on a yearly basis while the assessment and payment of taxes on property transactions happen on daily basis. If given the needed attention, this could be the cash-cow for government revenue from the real estate sector.

  • Government to suspend debt service payments under certain categories – MoF

According to the Ministry of Finance, the government would stop making all debt service payments for several types of the country’s external debt.

The decision is temporary until the concerned debt obligations can be restructured in an orderly manner, according to a statement released by the Ministry and seen by GhanaWeb Business.

According to the statement, payments on Ghana’s commercial term loans, Eurobonds, and a sizable chunk of its bilateral debt will all be suspended.

“This suspension will not include the payments of our multilateral debt, new debts (whether multilateral or otherwise) contracted after 19th December 2022 or debts related to certain short-term trade facilities,” the statement noted.

“We are also evaluating certain specific debts related to projects with the highest socio-economic impact for Ghana which may have to be excluded. This suspension is an interim emergency measure pending future agreements with all relevant creditors,” it added.

The Finance Ministry however added that government is keen on holding engagements with its external creditors in order to undertake a transparent, fair and comprehensive debt restructuring exercise in line with international best practices.

It further pointed out that the Ministry of Finance will hold an investor presentation at a date that will be announced in due course.

  • Watch Khloé Kardashian get asked if she’s ‘still sleeping’ with Tristan Thompson during lie detector test

In a lie detector interview for Vanity Fair with her sister Kourtney, Khloé Kardashian was asked if she’s “still sleeping” with her ex-boyfriend Tristan Thompson.

“Are you sleeping with Tristan?” Kourtney asked her sister near the end of her portion of the interview. “No, I am not,” she responded. “I’m really not.” The polygraph examiner confirmed that she was telling the truth, to which Kourtney congratulated her sister, “Bravo!” Khloé added that if it showed she was lying, even though she’s adamant she’s not, she “would die.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Khloé asked Kourtney if she regretted not inviting her family to their impromptu wedding ceremony in Las Vegas earlier this year. “I do not,” she replied, to which the examiner confirmed she was being truthful.

She also spoke about when she was caught having sex with her husband Travis Barker in public, and Khloé asked her if she regretted that. “Nope,” she said, to which Khloé responded, “Good for you.”

In an episode of Hulu’s The Kardashians earlier this year, Khloé revealed that she turned down a marriage proposal from Tristan. “The fact that he proposed and you never told us,” said Kim in an episode. “And I asked him months later… the night after I thought it happened and he’s like, ‘Oh I did it months ago, she didn’t tell you guys?”

Prior to the proposal, Tristan and Khloé were the subject of a public cheating scandal, and the NBA star later admitted he was unfaithful during their relationship. He apologized and has since had a child with another woman, whom he pays $9,500 in child support to every month.

  • Teen discovers anonymous Cyberbully who harassed her was her own parent, mother charged

A Michigan woman was arrested and charged this week in Isabella County for her role in a catfishing scheme that targeted her own daughter.

According to the New York Post, Kendra Gail Licari, 42, of Mt. Pleasant was charged on Monday with two counts of stalking a minor, two counts of using a computer to commit a crime, and one count of obstruction of justice.

Licari’s daughter and her then-boyfriend were being cyberbullied, but they didn’t know it was Licari until they identified her this past Spring. The cyberbullying stemmed from a Dec. 2021 complaint to Beal City Schools, which means the harassment was going on for well over a year.

At the time the report was made, Licari was a girls’ basketball coach at Beal City Schools.

Isabella County Prosecutor David Barberi said FBI analysts were able to identify Licari as the cyberbully through her IP addresses that were used to send the harmful messages. Barberi says they have complied 349 pages of text and correspondence with the teens.

In addition, she is accused of using VPNs to frame her daughter’s peers with the cyberbullying. Licari has since made a full confession.

Licari is due back in court on Dec. 29 to determine if there’s enough evidence to go to trial.

  • Nigerian telco billionaire loses $9 million in 200 days from stake in Conoil – Report

Oil and telecom millionaire Mike Adenuga of Nigeria has watched the value of his share in Conoil Plc decline by $9 million during the last 200 days.

Conoil, one of Nigeria’s biggest oil marketing companies, has seen a rise in the value of its stock, encouraging investors to book profits in the business.

Adenuga, who is the founder of the telecom company Globacom and the chairman of Conoil, owns a 74.4 percent stake in the oil marketing industry.

Conoil manufactures and promotes lubricants under the “Quatro” brand name, sells diesel, kerosene, low-pour fuel, aviation fuel, and gasoline, and has recently seen a rise in retained earnings to over $45.7 million.

Shares in the oil marketing company Conoil have plunged in the past 200 days, wiping millions off the fortune of its majority shareholder, Nigerian telecom billionaire Mike Adenuga.

As of December 14, Conoil shares were trading at N26.5 ($0.0594), unchanged from their opening price, as investors continued to monitor the market and snap up shares with strong financial performance.

Since May 29, exactly 200 days ago, Conoil shares have fallen from N34.25 ($0.0767) to N26.5 ($0.0594), leading investors to sell off their stakes in the company after making millions in profits during the first five months of the year.

Adenuga’s stake in the company has decreased from N17.68 billion ($39.6 million) on May 29 to N13.68 billion ($30.6 million) at the time of writing this report, resulting in a loss of N4 billion ($9 million) for the Nigerian billionaire.

However, his stake in the oil marketing business has still increased by more than $5.2 million so far this year, and he has also received N1.29 billion ($3.1 million) in dividends from his stake in the Lagos-based petroleum marketing company.
