  • China to quadruple stockpile of world-ending nuclear bombs in just over a decade

China is set to quadruple its stockpile of world-ending nuclear warheads in just over a decade, the Pentagon revealed today.

Last year, the military warned China is expanding its nuclear force much faster that Washington had predicted and rapidly closing the gap with the United States.

Their report highlights a broad and accelerating buildup of military muscle designed to enable Beijing to match or surpass U.S. global power by mid-century.

The Pentagon said the number of Chinese nuclear warheads could increase to 700 within six years and may top 1,000 by 2030. The new report says China currently has about 400 nuclear warheads, and that number could grow to 1,500 by 2035.

The United States, by comparison, has 3,750 active nuclear warheads.

Beijing’s growing arsenal is creating uncertainty for the US as it navigates how to deter two nuclear powers, Russia and China, simultaneously, the Pentagon said in its recent nuclear posture review.

And China’s build-up also creates uncertainty about its intentions, said Bonny Lin, director of the China power project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

“Will the actual increase in capability start impacting how Chinese experts think about the use of nuclear weapons?” such as whether it would change Beijing’s no “first use” policy, Lin asked.

“That’s the uncertainty. We can’t assume that if they have more capabilities, that their policy is going to remain the same.”

The report looks at China’s activities in 2021 and therefore does not assess what impact Russia’s invasion of Ukraine may have had on China’s militarisation priorities or strategy.

It also looks at what extent the invasion has weakened or strengthened China’s relationship with Russia, said a senior defence official who briefed reporters in advance of the report’s release on the condition they not be named.

While China has not provided Russia with weapons in the current conflict, its amplification of Russian disinformation and its continued support for joint military exercises with Russia is something the U.S. is monitoring closely, the official said.

China is also closely watching how the international community reacts to Russia’s threat to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, said John Erath, senior policy director for the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation.

“If Russia is able to gain its objectives by means of nuclear threats, China will derive lessons from that and could be potentially making these kinds of threats against Taiwan or other neighbouring countries in connection with China’s territorial ambitions,” Erath said.

The report was released as China is seeing its most widespread protests in decades, with demonstrators denouncing the country’s “zero-Covid” policy, but the timing is unrelated.

Congress requires the Pentagon to prepare the report annually.

Its release also comes just two weeks after President Joe Biden met with China’s President Xi Jinping on the sidelines the Group of 20 Summit in Bali, Indonesia, their first in-person meeting since Biden became president in January 2021.

During their nearly three-hour session, Biden objected directly to China’s “coercive and increasingly aggressive actions” toward Taiwan, but also said the US is not looking for conflict with the communist power.

  • Chelsea express transfer interest in Vasco da Gama wonderkid Andrey Santos with special clause a potential boost

Chelsea are interested in signing Vasco midfielder Andrey Santos and could make an offer as soon as the January window.

WHAT’S HAPPENING? Chelsea are eager to sign the 18-year-old, whose style has been compared with Sergio Busquets. His advanced abilities for his age have prompted Vasco to demand a club-record fee for the player – the previous highest mark was €18.5 million paid by Bayer Leverkusen for Paulinho in 2018.

THE BIGGER PICTURE: It’s understood that a clause in Santos’ contract states that any English team can pay below his €40 million release clause to secure his services, though the exact figure is not known. That clause is a boost to Chelsea and Newcastle as they try to negotiate a lower fee.

AND WHAT’S MORE: Santos recently renewed his contract with Vasco, signing on until September 2027 with the Rio de Janeiro club. In 2022, the defensive midfielder made 42 appearances for Vasco, totalling 3,402 minutes on the pitch.

WHAT NEXT FOR ANDREY SANTOS? He’ll continue his rapid development at Vasco until further notice, but it seems his eyes are set on an eventual move to Europe.

  • ‘Weak fundamentals’: ‘I lost about $12 million due to cedi depreciation’ – Ken Agyapong

He said since then, the cedi has depreciated to the dollar from GH¢4 to a whopping GH¢15 as witnessed recently.

“When your fundamentals are weak, the exchange rate will expose you. When you were making that statement, the exchange was GH¢4.20p. On Friday, it was GH¢15.00 to a dollar.

“What message do you want to give to Ghanaians again? Let me tell you; I’m telling you this straight; I’m saying all these things because of [something]…from March this year to August this year, through the exchange rate, I lost $12 million,” Kennedy Agyapong said in a viral audio in GhanaWeb’s possession.

Kennedy Agyapong is one of the leading figures gunning to replace president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as leader of the NPP going into the 2024 General Elections.

Others rumoured to be interested in becoming flagbearers include Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen. The primaries are slated for next year.

Ken Agyapong takes on Bawumia over ‘fundamentals are weak’ comment

Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has stated that between March and August 2022, he lost roughly $12 million due to the cedi’s fall against the dollar.

He claims that the vice president has no new message for Ghanaians after criticizing the John Dramani Mahama administration in 2014 and saying that “if the foundations are weak, the exchange rate will expose you.”

Agyapong said that when Dr. Bawumia made those remarks, the exchange rate was GH4.20p to a dollar. He was addressing to select party members as part of his campaign for flagbearership of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

  • Afghanistan bombing: At least 10 children killed after huge explosion hits school

At a religious school in northern Afghanistan, Taliban militants are seen walking through dead bodies scattered across prayer mats and smashed glass in a horrible, unconfirmed video that is going viral on social media.

According to reports, these Taliban militants had earlier bombed a boy’s religious school, Jahdia seminary, in Aybak city of Samangan.

The exact number of fatalities is yet unknown since there are two different accounts.

A hospital doctor informed local news that at least 15 people perished and 27 others were injured.

Taliban Interior ministry spokesman Abdul Nafi Takor also disclosed that at least 10 children have died after the bomb with several others wounded.

“This afternoon, an explosion occurred in a religious seminary in Aybak, the capital of Samangan province, as a result of which about 10 students were martyred and several others were injured,” Mr Nafi Takor said.

“Our detective and security forces are working quickly to prevent this unforgivable crime and identify the perpetrators and punish them for their actions.”

  • Third-party deficit financing could jeopardise development – IEA

The expectation that international concessional and development partners will cover the whole anticipated budget deficit in the medium-term, meaning between 2023 and 2026, has been deemed alarming by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA).

According to information in the budget declaration, the deficit is anticipated to be GH61.5 billion, or 7.7 percent of the Gross Domestic Product, in 2023. (GDP).
It is anticipated to reach GH 71 billion, GH 54.4 billion, and GH 61 billion in 2024, 2025, and 2026, respectively. As the Bank of Ghana (BoG) reduces its monetisation of the deficit, this amount would be covered by foreign parties.

Already, the central bank has financed the 2022 budget with an injection of GH¢49.9billion – a development analysts are concerned will keep inflation up. The BoG has had to make the interventions mostly because deposit money banks (DMBs) have demanded a premium to purchase government securities due to deteriorating market conditions.

This has seen interest rates trend upward across the spectrum of the yield curve, with the base 91-day Treasury bill accelerating from 12.49 percent at the beginning of the year to 31.53 percent in October – with the 182-day Treasury bill following suit, rising from 13.91 percent to 32.61 percent over the same period and similar developments on the 364-day instrument, 2-year, 3-year and 5- and 6-year bonds.

Welcoming the expected lower level of participation by the BoG in financing the budget shortfall, the IEA however noted that solely dependinge on foreign parties could have dire consequences for domestic development projects.

“The entire financing for the period is to be provided by multinational and other international partners. This is worrisome, because if for some reason they do not fully materialise – such as due to government’s inability to meet some conditions – government may have to fall back on the BoG and/or forgo some development projects and programmes,” stated IEA’s Director of Research, Dr. John Kwakye.

    CAPEX

The situation has assumed increased importance over the historically low percentage share of capital expenditure (CAPEX) to GDP, especially when compared to recurrent expenditure.

The 2023 budget projects a CAPEX of GH¢27.7billion (3.5 percent of GDP) compared to big-ticket, recurrent items such as compensation (GH¢45billion) and interest payment (GH¢52.6billion).

With the desperate need for hard and soft infrastructure – roads, bridges, hospitals, schools, factories, housing facilities, energy systems, water systems, sanitation systems, etc. – to transform the economy, the IEA made a bold call for an increase of CAPEX to a minimum of 5 percent to GDP in 2023, with increased allocation of between 7 and 8 percent in 2024, 9 and 10 percent in 2025 and 12 and 15 percent in 2026, arguing that such a line of action would bring the domestic rate in line with the standard “deemed acceptable for countries in the process of developing”.

“The CAPEX allocation, which is equivalent to about US$2billion (at today’s exchange rate of US$1 = GH¢14, which will reduce further with more depreciation), is insignificantly small to meet the country’s huge development needs … This will require raising more resources and allocating relatively more to CAPEX,” the public policy think-tank added.

The IEA also proposed an amendment to the Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA) to guarantee that use of all borrowed funds be channelled toward CAPEX only, “with none going to recurrent expenditure” while asking parliament to oversee and enforce the provision.

The Institute, however, did not provide guidance on how immediate recurrent expenditure would be met if its proposal were to be adopted.

  • IMF-backed medium-term plan will restore economy – Market Observer

The execution of government’s medium-term economic plans, backed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), will bring the Ghanaian economy back to pre-COVID levels according to a market observer.

However, the recovery process will be expensive for all stakeholders, Apakan Securities remarked in a post-2023 budget analysis.

Per the 2023 budget, government has created the post-Covid-19 Programme for Economic Growth (PC-PEG) as a road map to deal with present economic issues. The main goals of the PC-PEG include re-anchoring inflation expectations, achieving low and stable inflation, and bolstering the exchange rate regime. It also aims to restore fiscal and debt sustainability, and reduce fiscal risks such as those associated with contingent obligations from state-owned enterprises (SOEs).

Deepening structural reforms, regaining market access, regaining investor confidence, unlocking new sources of funding while creating the necessary buffers to strengthen resilience to economic shocks, as well as raising the nation’s sovereign credit ratings and regaining access to international capital markets are additional targets.

“We believe government’s fiscal operations for 2023 will start on a smoother note compared to 2022, which witnessed a delay in the passage and implementation of some key revenue measures (notably the e-Levy). Layering this, passage of the Tax Exemptions bill 2022 by parliament will be a major lever for revenue collections moving forward, as this could help plug a significant amount of cedi lost via tax exemptions over the past years,” Apakan said.

The market watcher noted that with VAT’s significant contribution of circa 60 percent and 24 percent to taxes on domestic goods and services and tax revenue from 2014 to 2021, approval of the 2.5 percent increment will be a boost to total revenue receipts.

“That notwithstanding, a historical trend of revenue collection slippages – averaging about GH¢1.7billion from 2014 to 2021 – as well as expected receding economic growth will remain key risks to revenue targets,” it cautioned.

Government implemented expenditure restraint measures – especially a 30 percent reduction in discretionary spending to make up the income losses – in response to vulnerabilities and slippages in total revenue receipts and a probable full-year shortfall in total revenue for 2022. The containment measures have, however, been countered by soaring interest payments made worse by significant cedi exchange losses against the US dollar. As a result, the first nine months of 2022 saw a fiscal deficit of 7.4 percent of GDP as opposed to the revised target of 6.6 percent of GDP.

Similarly to this, government has set out a wide range of budgetary reductions and containments for 2023 in order to pursue debt and fiscal consolidation in the long term, get an agreement with the IMF and regain public trust in the Ghanaian economy.

“While we see promising expenditures containment measures outlined by government, we still expect a rigorous attempt and commitment by government in its expenditure rationalisation to stay on the path of debt and fiscal sustainability in the medium-term.

“We note that government’s engagement with the IMF has been impressive since the process started in Jul-2022, judged by statements from both parties showing stern commitments to fast-track the completion of a programme as fast as is feasible,” Apakan said.

Nonetheless, it further warned that the crystallisation of a possible debt treatment by government to pave the way for an IMF deal remains a significant risk.

  • Promoting Tourism: Hospitality industry advised to provide quality service to customers

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Tourist Authority (GTA), Ekow Samsom, has advised participants in the hospitality sector to offer top-notch services to their clients in order to advance the travel and tourism industry.

For clients to receive value for their money, he claimed that excellent customer service was necessary at every stage in the industry, including hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, and airlines.

Mr. Samsom provided the guidance to informal caterers in Tamale during a stakeholders’ engagement and customer service training to improve their ability to provide better customer care.

Customer service was directly related to tourism and without customers companies would not get the expected income, he said, adding that customers must get the satiisfaction they dreamt of for every venture.

Mrs Yvonne Ohui MacCarthy, Consultant for GTA, advised the participants to be friendly to customers and build good relationships, which would entice them to always yearn to come back.

She said; “If tourists get good service in a well-known catering service, then they will consider that hotel chain first whenever they travel again and will recommend it to others within their social circle.”

“Marketing in the tourism and hospitality industry requires an understanding of the differences between marketing goods and marketing services.”

Mrs MacCarthy said organisations needed an understanding of the unique characteristics of the motivation and behaviours of travelling consumers to take advantage of every opportunity.

Miss Annabelle McKenzie, the Director of Beyond the Return at the GTA, called on catering service providers to introduce Ghanaian foods to their customers as part of promoting made-in-Ghana foods globally.

  • Crackdown on black market operators was to control cedi depreciation – Interior Minister

The latest arrests of individuals suspected of operating on the FX parallel market, according to Interior Minister Ambrose Dery, are a part of efforts to prevent further devaluation of the cedi.

According to him, illicit black-market traders’ activities were causing the cedi to continue to fall against other major currencies, such as the US dollar, necessitating a crackdown to maintain compliance with Ghana’s forex laws and regulations.

In response to worries expressed by Torgbui Amenya Fiti V, Paramount Chief of the Aflao Traditional Area, about the November 10 arrest of numerous currency dealers at the Aflao Border.

Torgbui Fiti made the comment during the recent 25th Anniversary of his coronation and the climax of the annual Godigbe Festival of the people of Aflao.

Mr Dery said: “We’re all aware of the falling cedi to the dollar and it’s the disorder and lawless way in which foreign exchange is being done in Ghana.”

“It’s not done anywhere that you can get foreign money/exchange without telling us how you got it. How could you go to a place without providing an identity and you can change money?”.

“The lawlessness in that is also contributing to the falling cedi and the Bank of Ghana has decided to ensure that it brings sanity. I’ll assure you, all those who are acting lawfully will be allowed to operate but all those operating illegally will be stopped.”

Mr Dery said the same reason applied to arresting the cedi’s free fall that the Central Bank had withdrawn forex support for the importation of some foods that could be produced locally including rice and vegetable oil.

The Minister promised to forward Torgui Fiti’s concerns but said it was important to explain the reason for the arrest.

He assured that the country’s borders would remain open as the government was committed to the ECOWAS border protocol but urged all stakeholders to cooperate with security agencies to keep the peace and security of the nation.

  • Explained: Why Griezmann’s last-gasp leveller was ruled out in France’s shock Tunisia defeat

WHAT HAPPENED? France were trailing 1-0 to Tunisia at World Cup 2022 when Griezmann volleyed home in stoppage time and looked to have salvaged a point. However, the goal was ruled for offside following a VAR check. The decision meant that France lost the game but still progress as group winners, while Tunisia pick up a memorable win but depart the tournament after finishing third in the group behind Australia, who beat Denmark in Group D’s other game.

WHY WASN’T IT GIVEN? VAR’s decision to disallow Griezmann’s goal did raise eyebrows and certainly did not impress the defending champions. The Frenchman was offside when the ball was originally played in but moved back into an onside position. Tunisia defender Montassar Talbi then headed the ball into the air, and Griezmann reacted smartly to volley the ball home. It appears the forward was deemed to be interfering with play despite the action occurring in the second phase.

  • Brazil legend Pele re-admitted to hospital amid cancer battle as doctors confirm heart problem

Pele was taken into the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil by his wife Marcia Aoki and a caregiver on Tuesday, according to ESPN Brazil. They state that he arrived unscheduled as a result of swelling all over his body, unlike previous, scheduled visits.

The 82-year-old has been in and out of hospital with increasing regularity in recent years. He underwent surgery to remove a tumour on his colon in September 2021 and spent a period in intensive care, but has been undergoing chemotherapy in the time since.

ESPN’s report states that medical staff identified ‘decompensated heart failure’ when attempting to diagnose Pele’s swelling, with the legend arriving ‘restless and confused’. It is also said he now struggles to feed himself.

Further tests are being carried out on November 30 to properly assess his condition, with no indication of a potential discharge. They hope to identify the organs compromised by the cancer in their testing, with his body not responding to chemotherapy.

Pele’s daughter, Kelly Nascimento, took to Instagram to provide an update on her father’s condition on November 30. She captioned her post with: “Hi my friends. Lots of alarm in the media today concerning my dad’s health.
He is in the hospital regulating medication. Some of my siblings are visiting Brazil. There is now emergency or new dire prediction. I will be there for New Years and promise to post some pictures.

Really and truly, we appreciate the concern and love!! 💚💙💛 @Pele”

  • Blocking of SIM cards: Data to determine further action – MP

The National Communications Authority (NCA) and the Ministry of Communications will decide on the next steps for SIM card re-registration and blocking, according to Sylvester Tetteh, MP for Bortianor-Ngleshie-Amanfro.

This occurs before the sim card re-registration exercise deadline.

The deadline for SIM card re-registration was extended twice by Communications Minister Ursula Owusu Ekuful after it was first announced.

This was because most of the people complained that they did not have Ghana cards and could not re-register their SIM cards.

Despite the extension, it appeared people were still reluctant to go register their sim cards; therefore, the Minister stated that from December 1, 2022, all unregistered SIM cards would be blocked.

Earlier, the Ministry listed some protocols to guide the blocking exercise, which included barring calls for some hours, interrupting calls, and blocking data usage, among others.

Speaking with Atinka FM‘s Kaakyire Ofori Ayim on the AM Drive on Atinka 104.7 FM, Mr. Sylvestor Tetteh said that as MPs, they had not received a full briefing on the position of the Minister of Communications at the time of speaking, and that as the deadline approaches, there will be an emergency meeting with the Ministry and the National Communications Authority (NCA) to review the whole exercise from their point of view.

That, he said, will inform the stakeholders in their next line of action.

Although he admitted that some had genuine challenges in re-registering their sim cards, Mr Sylvestor Tetteh observed that some people were just being stubborn and therefore refused to re-register their sim cards.

“Some people boldly declare that they will not re-register their SIM cards, claiming that no one can harm them and that it is sometimes surprising.”

“We will go in numbers to collect data and examine the number of SIM cards in this country, how many have been registered, and how many are still available. We will also determine how many people have legitimate reasons for not registering, as well as the problems with Ghana cards, the number of cards issued by the NIA, and other factors. We’ll go over everything and then make our decision. But, for the time being, we have not received an official report from the ministry; however, as soon as we do, the committee will review it.”

He said that after the investigations when they realise that the people have genuine challenges, they will offer support but when they realise that the people don’t have any challenges but have just decided not to re-register their sim cards, then the committee will support the NCA and the Ministry to carry on with their action so that Ghanaians will be protected.

  • Moment actress Tracey Boakye predicted Ghana’s loss in game against South Korea and it backfired

Actress Tracey Boakye has shared on social media a video of herself watching Ghana’s game with her husband.

Undoubtedly it was a tough game but Ghana was able to throw out their opponents with a 3:2 scoreline (against South Korea)

While most Ghanaians were optimist that Ghana would beat South Korea and qualify to the next stage, Tracey was playing the devil’s advocate. Apparently she had predicted a loss for Ghana ahead of the game; a prediction that failed abysmally.

Her husband who was making his way towards her seat in a plush living room, had already burst out laughing heartily – teasing her. He can be heard in the video calling out the name of the deceased pastor T.B Joshua.

Feigning anger, Tracey issued a stern but jovial caution to him not to come close. He found a seat in one of the chairs in the living room and continued with his hearty laughter.

Tracey then shouted “Ghana would go and meet Uruguay,” implying that Uruguay will beat Ghana.

  • Financial bailout: IMF team arrives in Ghana on December 1

On December 1, 2022, representatives of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will be in Ghana to consult with the government on their economic rescue plan.

Stéphane Roudet, the IMF’s Mission Chief for Ghana, will be in charge of the team that will be in Ghana from December 1 to December 13, 2022.

Prior to their trip to Ghana, Mr. Roudet pointed out that the Bretton Woods organization had constructive meetings with the Ghanaian government in recent months and was hoping for a more forward-thinking one to reach an understanding on the policies and changes put forth to the IMF.

He stressed that the IMF remains committed to help Ghana restore its macroeconomic stability for Ghanaians to heave a sigh of relief.

“We have had productive discussions with the Ghanaian authorities over the last few months and look forward to our engagement in Accra…our objective for this visit is to make further progress toward reaching agreement on policies and reforms that could be supported by an IMF lending arrangement,” he said.

“The IMF remains fully committed to help Ghana restore macroeconomic stability, bring relief to Ghanaians in this time of crisis, and lay the foundation for more inclusive growth,” he added.

Ghana is targeting an amount of $3 billion over a three-year period from the IMF once an agreement on a programme is reached.

The new amount requested as a loan is double the government’s initial target of $1.5 billion.

The possible IMF programme for Ghana is aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability and safeguarding debt sustainability among many others.

The supporters also gave the Black Stars a rousing welcome at the airport when the players and the technical team landed in Doha. The supporters also stormed the team’s hotel to sing jama songs.

Speaking at the meetup the Sports Minister said:

  • Dolly Parton: the ultimate philanthropic hero?

The universally beloved country music legend Dolly Parton has established herself as far more than a ‘dumb blonde’ for years – despite releasing a song with that title in 1967.

Parton has put her money where her mouth is, over and over again, to help those in need – often in the areas local to her and her upbringing. The Tennessee-born star is, after all, a country girl at heart.

The singer, 76, wasn’t always such a widely adored icon, however. Firstly, she wasn’t instantly successful. Well, not under her own name, at least. Parton first made it in the music industry as a songwriter for other people. But aged 21, she was invited on American country music singer Porter Wagoner’s weekly TV show, replacing Norma Jean.

  • The child support! The mansions! The art collection! All the details from Kim and Kanye’s divorce settlement

Kimye have finally agreed to the terms of their divorce — here’s who’s getting what

In 2005, Kanye West penned the immortal words: “If you ain’t no punk holla ‘We want prenup, We want prenup!’ It’s something that you need to have, ‘cause when she leave yo’ ass she gone leave with half.”

Little did he know, less than ten years later he would marry a woman that would come to dwarf his wealth by the time the two divorced.

But West stuck to his lyrics, and so did his bride Kim Kardashian, which means now in 2022 the pair are both divorcing with prenuptial agreements in place.

Kim and Kanye own many of their properties separately, which, in tandem with the prenup, means things being separated is fairly cut and dry. Between them, the pair own 19 separate properties across a range of locations, including mansions, ranches, offices and empty plots of land in Calabasas.

The only notable property to change hands in the divorce settlement is the $4.5 million Calabasas house, owned by West, which directly neighbours Kardashian’s main residence, her $60 million Hidden Hills compound. The rapper acquired the 3,650 square foot, five bedroom home for himself amidst the couple’s separation period, during which he was spending the majority of his time at his ranch in Wyoming, but wanted to feel closer to the kids.

The property will now be signed over to Kardashian, who is reportedly likely to tear it down and use the land to expand her acreage, as it is already in need of extensive renovations.

But don’t worry, West still has plenty of places to live. As per the settlement agreement, he will keep his $57.3 million Malibu beach house that’s part mansion, part sculpture (how very Ye), his two ranches in Wyoming, a flat in Belgium, his childhouse house that he bought daughter Chicago, 300 spare acres in Calabasas and finally, his own Hidden Hills mansion, which is down the street from Kardashian.

According to court documents Kim K will be keeping her Hidden Hills compound, some nearby plots of land in residential areas, and her homes in Malibu and Idaho.

Kardashian and West agreed to completely split custody of their four children, North, nine, Saint, six, Chicago, four, and Psalm, three. With joint legal and physical custody, Kardashian and West have equal access to their kids at all times but sources have told TMZ that they will reside with Kim for the majority of the time.

West will pay Kardashian $200,000 a month in child support, and all the rest of the children’s costs will be split evenly: each parent pays half the cost of their kids’ education, and half the cost of their private security. Kim and Kanye have also agreed to enter mediation should they ever have any disagreements that revolve around care of their children, which is useful considering the two have been rumoured to be on bad terms in recent months, communicating exclusively through their assistants.

he pair both waived rights to spousal support — financial support paid from one spouse to another — due to the conditions of their prenup (but also on account of them being billionaires, so they’re probably alright to get their own groceries for now).

    And everything else?

The finer details of Kim and Kanye’s division of assets are yet to be revealed, but according to the Los Angeles Times the settlement does include their various personal belongings, such as furniture, vehicles, art, clothing, antiques, handbags and furs. That’s right, furs are specifically mentioned.

Given that Kanye owns not one but eight Sherps (all-terrain vehicles built in Ukraine, designed to plough through Siberian landscapes) — and that’s just part of his car collection — you can assume the division of assets will be almost as pricey as the parting of the property portfolio. Heck, imagine what Kim K’s bag and shoe collection is worth.

And it may surprise you, but the Kardashians are actually very big on art — especially modern pop art. Kris, Kendall and Kylie all have large neon Tracey Emin artworks in their houses, and when Khloe didn’t recognise a Jeff Koons balloon dog on an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians once, Kris Jenner famously told her: “You need to go to, like, an art class.” So between Kim and the even more artistic Kanye, there could be untold wealth in that art collection, which is now set to be halved.

However, given that the former couple have been in the process of divorcing for nearly two years, and separated for even longer, the assets are likely pretty split already. So yes, when Kim left, she left with half, but with her own private net worth eclipsing that of her ex-husband, we can be fairly certain she isn’t a gold digger.

  • Dr. Addison allays fears on depleting foreign reserves

Dr. Ernest Addison, the governor of the Bank of Ghana, has allayed concerns about the nation’s declining foreign reserves by asserting that once the policies set by the government and the Bank begin to show results, everything would return to normal.

The Gross International Reserves (GIR) have decreased to GH6.6 billion as of October this year, representing just 2.9 months of import cover compared to GH10.6 billion a year ago, which represented 4.8 months of import cover, according to the Summary of Economic and Financial Data (November 2022) published by the Bank of Ghana.

In the same vein, the net international reserves (reserves readily available to the central bank) have also depleted to GH¢2.8billion from GH¢7.2billion in the same period under consideration. This has raised some concerns over a possible total depletion of the reserves, which would have dire consequences for the economy – especially on the cedi, as it has already lost more than 50 percent of its value to the dollar this year.

But queried at a press conference after announcing a 250 basis points increase in the policy rate, which effectively takes it to 27 percent, Dr. Addison said the depleted reserves result from significant outflow transactions that have taken place this year with no corresponding inflows; adding that these are government obligations which have to be performed at all cost.

“This year alone, even though we didn’t go to the capital market we still had to service our debt. The numbers suggest that we experienced an outflow of US$5.2billion year-to-date in 2022. That is the extent of pressure on the central bank’s reserves because we had to pay our loans, almost US$3billion outflows to service debt – interest and amortization; almost US$800million to pay for energy payments; another US$1.8billion to support the market’s functioning. So we are seeing a situation where from the outflow side these are obligations that you cannot default. As I speak, we are still servicing our debt.

“And from the inflow side, the only major inflow that has come to support the budget this year is the Afri-Exim bank loan; and then, fortunately, we have the cocoa loan inflow in October. On a net basis we have lost, on a balance of payment basis, almost US$3.4billion as at the end of September; and we are projecting that we will even lose more. By December we could have lost US$4billion,” he said.

The Governor however expressed optimism over discussions with the IMF: that when completed and successful, the agreement will add about US$3bilion to the foreign currency buffers, in addition to its own gold purchasing policy which has already kick-started.

“If we are successful with the restructuring operations, the burden on balance of payments, in terms of external interest payment, will also be lifted; so we do not expect to see the same type of outflows we have seen this year…The IMF financing is an important part of the outlook. Hopefully, that will bring in US$3billion over the three-year period. And one of the things we are doing is buying gold to help improve reserve buffers,” he said.

  • Woman struck by high-speed rollercoaster wakes up from two-month coma

A 26-year-old Australian woman who was left in a two-month coma after being hit by a high-speed rollercoaster has woken up.

The victim identified as Shylah Rodden is said to have climbed onto the Rebel Coaster’s tracks during the Melbourne Royal Show to retrieve her smartphone which had fallen under the tracks.

According to a report by the mirror, Rodden was flung 29 feet into the air before she landed on the ground.

She was left unconscious with severe injuries to her pelvis, arms, legs, back and neck, including brain damage.

Due to the severity of her injury, she was put in a medically-induced coma when she was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Doctors who were attending to the 26-year-old is said to have told her parents her injuries were the worst they’d seen in a long time.

Her devasted father who spoke to the media is unable to fathom how her daughter got hit by the rollercoaster.

He said “the injuries are horrific. Horrific. She’s brain-damaged. It’s pelvic, her arms, legs, back, neck — there’s hardly a thing that’s not broken. I just can’t work out how the hell so much damage has been done.”

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, the hospital revealed she was now in a stable condition.

A family friend close to Rodden’s family said to News.com.au that she was ‘still not out of the woods’.

According to the hospital, Rodden had been showing some signs of improvement, with her condition being downgraded from critical to serious on October 11.

  • SIM registration: Here are the services to be blocked after November 30 deadline

The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications declared earlier this month that after the deadline of November 30, 2022, it is prepared to deactivate all unregistered SIM cards.

By merely finishing the registration process, it was said that holders of Ghana cards might prevent this difficulty (the deactivation of SIM).

The telco chamber underlined that only subscribers who have finished stage 1 [linkage to Ghana Card] but have not yet finished stage 2 [biometric capture] of the SIM registration will have their SIM cards disabled in a most recent press statement seen by GhanaWeb Business.

The Chambers also highlighted six services that customers will not be able to enjoy once their SIM cards were blocked.

Below are the services to be blocked.

    • Voice

    • Data (Mobile Phones, Mifis, other data providing devices)

    • SMS (incoming and outgoing)

    • USSD

    • Mobile money services

    • Emergency services

The Chamber however encouraged all subscribers who have acquired Ghana cards but were yet to complete stage 2 (biometric capture) to do so without delay before the close of business on Wednesday, November 30, 2022.

Meanwhile, a total of 20,892,970 subscribers have completed the SIM card registration process.

  • Let’s be pragmatic about the Black Stars – Oscar Provencal

Renowned actor, Oscar Provencal has advised Ghanaians to be pragmatic about the Black Stars because they are a new team.

He says that Ghanaians should not be dreamers, especially where the new players for the country’s team are concerned.

On GTV’s Breakfast Show with Kafui Dey, Oscar began his rant of the day by congratulating the Black Stars on their stellar performance in the recent match against South Korea.

In his opinion, they could have done a better job, but they did give an exceptional performance.

Mr. Provencal said, “they are relevant in the way they unify a divided country, and for that, they have the support of all Ghanaians.”

He mentioned that although he was not in favour of how much was spent on them, they do uplift the nation’s hopes and put the Ghanaians in high spirits.

“They could of course also incite anger in Ghanaians that is if things go haywire.”

However, even with their win, he asks that Ghanaians not get their hopes up too much because these are new players and they are a new team.

  • TUC decries freeze on employment in 2023 budget

Trades Union Congress members have warned that the measures in the 2023 budget statement and economic strategy will worsen the nation’s economic problems and have called on their union to reject them.

The TUC claims that the budget was intended to impoverish the typical Ghanaian and workers, citing the decision to forbid civil and public servants from taking on new jobs, the increase of value added tax (VAT) by 2.5 percent, and the removal of the levy threshold on electronic transactions (E-Levy), among other issues.

Speaking at a post-budget forum organised by the TUC and themed ‘Rebuilding Path’, Secretary-General Agriculture Workers Union (GAWU), Edward Kareweh, described the budget as inimical to the aspirations of Ghanaians and labour.

“The budget did not reflect the aspirations of Ghanaians. It did not reflect the aspirations of labour. It did not reflect the dire situation of farmers. Why am I saying so? In the budget, government agreed that the major concern of our country is unemployment.

“We also know that unemployment has been rising. But the budget aims to increase unemployment through a deliberate policy not to employ people. It’s not by accident or inability of government to create jobs; they are saying that they are deliberately through this policy not going to employ people,” he stated.

Speaking to journalists on the forum’s sidelines, the TUC Secretary-General, Dr. Yaw Baah, added that the decision will negatively impact productivity and welfare of the country.

“Your effectiveness in service delivery will be affected, and the workers who are working will have to share the burden of those who have retired without any compensation; and that is why we have issues with this,” Dr. Baah said.

He added: “We know that we are in crisis, but the policies we adopt as solutions to the crisis could even deepen it. That is not what we want. We want solutions which will be effective, will make sure everybody wins”.

Speaking on the subject, Dr. Kwabena Nyarko Otoo – Director of TUC’s Labour Research and Policy Institute (LRPI), called for government’s economic policies in 2023 to go beyond the IMF bailout.

He said government should roll-out homegrown policies which seek to transform the economy’s structure, with gricultural investment and industrialisation being a key policy in the medium- to long-term.

Dr. Nyarko Otoo further called for an intensification of revenue mobilisation and implementation of the Exemptions Act, as well as ending harmful exemptions which deprive the state of revenues.

“In the medium- to long-term, government must implement policies which can generate more revenue from our mineral wealth. Currently, Ghana receives just 10 percent of the mining sector’s revenues while government imposes a maximum 25 percent tax on wages/salaries of workers,” he stated.

The forum afforded the TUC and its affiliates an opportunity to ascertain the extent to which the budget will help address current economic challenges and put the economy on a growth-path, so as to create decent employment for the citizenry.

  • World Cup 2022: Ex-Uruguay defender Hugo De León charges players to fight until the end against Ghana

Former Uruguay defender Hugo De León has urged  players to  put in all effort to defeat Ghana in the final group game in the World Cup.

Uruguay have managed just a point after suffering defeat against Portugal on Monday afternoon after two games in Group H

Meanwhile, Ghana earned an important win to boost their chances of progressing to the round of 16.

The Black Stars inflicted a 3-2 win over the Asian giants to boost their chances of qualifying to the knockout phase.

The four-time African champions must avoid defeat against Uruguay to book a spot in the Round of 16.

Ahead of their clash with Ghana, the former Uruguay international has charged the players to play until the end of the game.

With six points, the 2016 European Champions are now leading Group H ahead of Ghana, who has three.

Prior to Friday’s final group games, Uruguay and South Korea both have one point each.

In the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, a Luis Suarez handball incident prevented Ghana from advancing to the semifinals.

Dominic Adiyiah of Ghana’s blocked the former Liverpool and Barcelona forward’s goal-bound header in the final second of extra time at Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.

Suarez effectively made a goalkeeper-caliber stop on the line, and as a result, he received a straight red card.

A penalty kick was given to Ghana as well, but Asamoah Gyan‘s shot from 12 yards hit the crossbar, causing Suarez to lose his mind on the sidelines and forcing a shootout.

Luis Suarez was applauded for his diabolical act as Uruguay advanced to the semifinals following the penalty shootout victory.

  • GPRTU introduces ‘MYGHTAXI’ digital platform to support taxis, trotros

MYGHTAXI, a brand-new digital platform, has been introduced nationwide for commercial vehicles.

In collaboration with a local provider of technology solutions, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) offers the digital platform for commercial taxi and trotro drivers.

The digital platform is consistent with the GPRTU’s efforts to enhance customer service and the operations of transport company operators nationwide.

The platform should make it easier for commercial drivers to use technology to get paid for their services.

A statement issued by the GPRTU, introducing the digital platform, urged drivers under it, “to download freely the GHTAXI DRIVER application from Google play or Apple store, and subsequently register by following the steps provided by the application.”

Applications will be approved by the technical staff after the team “verifies” the “documentation process” of drivers.

The GPRTU, therefore, urged “every single individual to help promote the MYGHTAXI digital platform.”

  • Agric Ministry vs. Council of State allocation: ‘I got my numbers wrong’ – Joe Jackson

The economist Joe Jackson has apologized and retracted recent statements that the budgetary allocations to the Ministry of Agriculture were lower than those to the Council of State.

On Thursday, November 24, 2022, when the finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, presented the 2023 budget to parliament, he made the aforementioned remarks.

He claimed that in creating the budget with the unequal funding for the two groups, the government had shown a lack of good judgment.

In a tweet of November 29, 2022; he said: “Profound apology: I got my numbers wrong on the issue of the budget allocation to the Council of State. The statement went viral and I apologize to everyone on this issue.”

He attached a link to the GhanaWeb story that carried his views as reported in a JoyNews interview.

    What Joe Jackson said:

He alleged that the government ignored key ministries with the capability of pursuing the nation’s economic recovery by starving them of funding while allocating significant funds to some agencies with questionable usefulness.

“I’ll be honest just this evening I got what I thought was a reliable version of the tables and I started looking through, some of the numbers just don’t make sense to me. Why is there 80 billion still there for the Cathedral? Forgive me, I don’t know. Why is there a contingency vote of 1.4 billion?

“The office of government machinery, I don’t care where you came from, why is it at 1.4 billion? Guess what? Ministry of Food and Agric, do you know how much we’re giving them? 1.2billion. Do you know how much we’re spending on free SHS? 2.9 billion. The Council of State is receiving more money than the Food and Agric Ministry,” he said on Joy News PM Express.

In his view, the government missed an opportunity to deal with the nation’s debt and economic crisis through the 2023 budget statement and economic policy.

“The point is this, we want reassurance, we want to believe that this government can even carry the rest of the country with the austerity budget it has to impose. We want to believe somebody is trying to bridge the trust gap between the government and the public. That can be done when you trim down and all of us feel that you’re taking the pain as much as we have to take the pain,” he said.

The government of Ghana is hoping to rescue the country’s challenging economy through several policies outlined in the 2023 budget.

  • World Cup 2022: Ignacio Alonso confident in the ability to turn things around ahead of Ghana clash

President of the Uruguayan Football Association, Ignacio Alonso  has stated that the team is optimistic about changing the World Cup’s atmosphere and the circumstances before their match against Ghana.

Uruguay has only earned one point through two games in Group H after losing to Portugal on Monday.

Ghana won a crucial match, increasing their likelihood of moving on to the round of 16.

To increase their prospects of moving on to the knockout round, the Black Stars defeated the Asian giants 3-2.

The four-time African champions must avoid defeat against Uruguay to book a spot in the Round of 16.

Earlier reports suggested there was an unhealthy atmosphere in camp after defeat to Portugal but the FA boss has denied, saying there is an excellent atmosphere in camp.

He added there is an excellent atmosphere ahead of the Ghana game as they seek to reverse the situation.

“I totally deny it.” He said.

“There are no inmates, I can assure and attest that there is an excellent climate,” began by saying “Nachito” interviewed on Channel 12, and expanded: “There is discomfort over the result, pain, but good weather and confidence in the ability to reverse the situation”.

“The performance is not what was expected,” he said later, to complete: “It is not what is adjusted to the possibilities of this team, that is why there is also a great expectation of being able to turn the situation around.”

The 2016 European champions are currently on the summit of Group H with six points, ahead of Ghana, who have three.

Meanwhile, Uruguay and South Korea both have one point each ahead of the final group games on Friday.

Ghana were denied a semifinal berth at the World Cup courtesy of a Luis Suarez handball incident in the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona forward prevent a goal-bound header from Ghana’s Dominic Adiyiah in the final minute of extra time at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.

Suarez essentially produced a save on the line worthy of a goalkeeper and he was shown a straight red card as a result.

Ghana were also awarded a penalty, but Asamoah Gyan’s attempt from 12 yards crashed into the crossbar, which resulted in Suarez going mental on the touchline and sent the game to a shootout.

Uruguay won the penalty shoot-out to progress to the semifinals with Luis Suarez celebrated for his demonic act.

  • Today in History: Akufo-Addo crippling private sector – Isaac Adongo

The Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo, accused the government of crippling the private sector since 2017.

He stressed, “Policy rate is only significant if the Bank of Ghana is a significant provider of liquidity to the banks, then you can charge at a policy rate plus which will be cheaper. But as we speak the people are not borrowing from the bank of Ghana to lend so you only give an indication.

“That indicative figure doesn’t reflect in the structure of my cost of capital and, therefore, it will not bring down my interest rate, it’s as simple as that. The earlier Finance Minister and his people understand this dynamics the better. It is for them to improve the support they give to the private sector,” he said.

Member of Parliament for Bolga Central, Isaac Adongo has accused the Akufo-Addo-led government of crippling the private sector since the New Patriotic Party assumed office in 2017.

According to Mr. Adongo, the “real credit” of the private sector has declined by a negative 3.9 percent, making it more difficult for businesses to thrive compared to the previous NDC administration.

He stressed, “Policy rate is only significant if the Bank of Ghana is a significant provider of liquidity to the banks, then you can charge at a policy rate plus which will be cheaper. But as we speak the people are not borrowing from the bank of Ghana to lend so you only give an indication. That indicative figure doesn’t reflect in the structure of my cost of capital and, therefore, it will not bring down my interest rate, it’s as simple as that. The earlier Finance Minister and his people understand this dynamics the better. It is for them to improve the support they give to the private sector.”

“If real credit to the banking sector or private sector has decline by negative 3.9 percent in other words it is a lot more difficult to get money now under NPP to run your business than it was to get previously and that the volumes have contracted in real terms by 3.9 percent how is that a reflection of support to the private sector. So no wonder real private sector credit has declined…” he added

The MP also insisted that about GHC8 billion and GHC9 billion liquidity in the banking sector has been frozen by government through the issuance of illiquid bonds to GCB Bank and CBG for the collapse of the seven banks instead of giving them cash or liquid bonds.

This he said has compromised the liquidity of these two banks, thereby, affecting their ability to meet their obligations to customers and extend needed credit to the private sector.

“Available data suggest a consistent decline of the private sector under the NPP Government thereby affecting the creation of sustainable jobs by the private sector,” Mr. Adongo reiterated.

  • World Cup 2022: Beating Ghana and qualifying for Round 16 is the goal – Luis Suarez

Uruguay striker, Luis Suarez, has lamented the team’s 2-0 loss against Portugal but insisted that his colleagues should concentrate on defeating Ghana in the following game.

Uruguay is on the verge of leaving the FIFA World Cup in 2022 early after two games without a victory.

The all-time leading scorer of goals claimed that Uruguay’s loss to Portugal last Monday was really heartbreaking.

According to him, Uruguay must only concentrate on a win against Ghana in the final Group H contest.

“All defeats hurt, especially in a World Cup. Now it’s time to be together as a group and not look for more excuses. Winning and qualifying, that’s our goal. Trust us that we are going to drop everything,” Luis Suarez said in a post on Instagram.

The striker is expected to be in action for Uruguay when they take on Ghana in the final Group H match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Uruguay will need to win that game to stand any chance of advancing to the Round of 16 of the tournament ongoing in Qatar.

The opponent, Ghana only needs a draw to secure qualification to Round 16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

  • US makes more in visa fees than aid they give Ghana – Hopeson Adorye claims

Hopeson Yaovi Adorye, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), asserted that the West views Africa as a location where they indulge in plundering, which he compared to the illicit small-scale mining practice known as galamsey.

He said that Western countries frequently recovered the money given as help to underdeveloped countries in the form of visa application costs.

Without providing any numbers, Adorye explicitly mentioned the case of the United States and claimed that the Embassy at Cantonments in Accra made more money than the US donated to Ghana in aid.

He said President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ agenda was seen as a threat by most Western nations because it threatened their interests.

“If the G20 look at Akufo-Addo, they begin to worry because it is here in Africa that they get their resources. Just like people go into the forests to engage in illegal small-scale mining, galamsey; the West uses Africa as their galamsey site.

“They come to take all their resources from here. If America claims to give us USD100 million in aid, it all comes from the building at Cantonments. A day’s visa fees collected at that Embassy is no joke. So, they gather our own monies and give it back to us in the pretext of aid and we are happy,” he claimed.

He also slammed the credit downgrades that the Ghanaian economy was suffering alleging that the downgrades were engineered to force governments to go to the International Monetary Fund and other development partners for economic assistance.

  • Kylie Jenner addresses claim she tried to ‘cover up’ Balenciaga controversy by sharing pics of her kids

Kylie Jenner has reacted to a TikTok user who accused her of posting photos of her kids in an attempt to distract people from the recent Balenciaga scandal.

This is after the makeup mogul shared photos of her 4-year-old daughter Stormi and 9-month-old son to Instagram on Monday. In response, a TikTok creator made a video in which they theorized that momager Kris Jenner instructed her kids “to release the good photos after the Balenciaga scandal.”

In the comments section, Kylie clapped back, writing, “Uh, whyyyyy would I post my child to cover up for Balenciaga? This is why I don’t do this. Always something to say.”

Kylie’s response comes shortly after her sister Kim Kardashian broke her silence on Balenciaga’s controversial campaign. The aforementioned photo shoot featured children holding teddy bears that appear to be in bondage gear. The SKIMS founder, who has worked with Balenciaga on several occasions, said she would reconsider her relationship with the brand amid the scandal.

“I have been quiet the past few days, not because I haven’t been shocked and outraged by the recent Balenciaga campaigns, but because I wanted an opportunity to speak to their team to understand for myself how this could have happened,” Kim shared in a statement on Nov. 27. “As a mother of four, I have been shaken by those disturbing images.”

On Nov. 28, the luxury brand released a new statement saying “we strongly condemn child abuse.” Balenciaga has also filed a $25 million lawsuit against production company North Six and set designer Nicholas Des Jardins.

The complaint states that the defendants “included certain documents in the campaign photographs, including an excerpt from a court decision upholding a criminal prohibition against child pornography” without Balenciaga being aware.

  • Jennifer Lopez says 2004 Ben Affleck breakup left her feeling ‘like I was going to die’

Fresh off announcing her ninth studio album This Is Me…Now, Jennifer Lopez sat down with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe to discuss creating the LP after her 2004 breakup with Ben Affleck.

“Twenty years ago, I fell in love with the love of my life,” Lopez told Lowe. “I was working on an album and it was called This Is Me … Then. It was all about capturing that moment in time. Now, the most amazing, incredible, unbelievable thing has happened. The reason we’re here is because I want to capture this moment in time because it is even better than the first time.”

“Dude, I wouldn’t even perform these records,” she recalled. “It was so painful after we broke up. Once we called off that wedding 20 years ago, it was the biggest heartbreak of my life. I honestly felt like I was going to die. It sent me on a spiral for the next 18 years where I just couldn’t get it right.”

After meeting on the set of their 2003 film Gigli, Lopez and Affleck got engaged in January 2004. They subsequently broke off their engagement, before rekindling their romance in May of 2021. A year later, in April 2022, months after Affleck alluded to his relationship with Lopez in a December 2021 interview with WSJ Magazine, the couple announced their engagement.

In July, Lopez and Affleck filed for a marriage license in Clark County, Nevada, as the couple exchanged vows in a small ceremony in Las Vegas. A month later, they celebrated their wedding with an official ceremony at the Gone Girl actor’s Georgia home.

Elsewhere in the interview Lopez explained how her and Affleck’s relationship fell apart the first time.

“It was a new thing and it destroyed us,” she said. “That was part of what destroyed us was the outside energy that was coming at us. And we loved each other. It was hard. It felt, at times, unfair, but neither one of us is that person to be like, ‘Woe is me.’ So we were like, ‘Well, we just got to dust it off and keep it moving.’”

“I think, in the weirdest way, that it motivated both of us to then become and do the things that we wound up doing, which is going into hyper-gear,” she continued. “He went into hyper-gear and I went into hyper-gear. But not together. We had to do it separately. He went on to start directing, win his Oscar, do his second Oscar, do his thing where people had written him off in a way. The same thing with me. It was just like people were like, ‘Her music career’s over.’”

Lopez concluded, “It fueled us in a weird way that we felt we had to prove ourselves again.”

  • Dr. Joseph Obeng, President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Mr. Appiah Kusi, Regional Director of CUTS International for West Africa, and Michael Obiri-Agyei, Executive Director of the EXIM Frozen Foods Association-Ghana have all criticized the central bank’s current policy as being hurried.

They disagree with the new Bank of Ghana policy suggesting the removal of forex support for the importation of specific goods designated as non-critical.

The central bank will no longer provide forex support for the import of rice, poultry, vegetable oils, toothpicks, pasta, fruit juice, bottled water, ceramic tiles and a few others.

This policy has been viewed as one of the strategies government is taking as part of measures to fight cedi depreciation, following President Nana Akufo-Addo’s address to the general public on the nation’s economic crisis.

Touching on the subject on the Eye on Port programme, these trade leaders acknowledged the wisdom behind the policy; however, it lacks enough stakeholder consultation and an effective contingency plan.

“I believe as a country we cannot forever import everything we need; however, if you want to stop the dependence on imports, you need to have the relevant capacity to produce to meet local demand and export. As it stands now, our total demand doesn’t match our local capacity to produce. There is a deficit,” Mr. Appiah Kusi Adomako opined.

He explained that the withdrawal of forex support can lead to a shortage of food because without forex support importers will be unable to bring in essential food products – and Ghana is not yet self-sufficient when it comes to feeding all its people.

“Already, the cedi has been battered by the raging storms of depreciation and the economy is staggered by inflation. So if we allow this BoG measure to stick, we are going to create more problems. They need to look at the welfare implications on households; commodities are expensive and people don’t earn nearly enough. Things will get worse when there is scarcity,” Mr. Adomako added.

He said while such a policy will bring long-term benefits such as strengthening the cedi, create jobs and grow local industries, without an effective strategy in place this policy could worsen the present economic crisis.

The West African Regional Director of CUTS International said the Bank of Ghana will have to liaise with other key institutions – such as the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the Statistical Services – in the decision-making process for such a drastic policy.

He explained that such an approach will have to be data-driven and all-encompassing to ascertain Ghana’s readiness to implement such a policy.

Similarly, he said government should come up with an effective and timely contingency plan that will make up for the production deficit.

“For example when you come to the rice production sector, government can look at providing subsidised loans to go into massive rice production for a period – and ban rice importation after. That is a policy backed by action. As of now, none of that has been done.”

The Executive Director of the EXIM Frozen Foods Association, Ghana, Michael Obiri-Agyei, said this is an example of a policy intended for good but not carefully thought-through.

He said government and the Bank of Ghana did not hold extensive consultations with stakeholders to help them appreciate the wisdom behind the directive, and also help them plan ahead.

“This is not the solution that we need right now. Take somebody who has imported frozen goods. Such a person has already engaged his suppliers to export to him. Prior to engaging the supplier, he was relying on the forex with assistance from the Bank of Ghana to pay the supplier. How do you expect him to survive? When you do these things, you cripple people doing legitimate business in your country. You make people unable to thrive in the business they have chosen to do. When you restrict them from accessing forex, you might as well tell them to close their businesses,” he lamented.

According to panellists, the directive will cause traders to engage in desperate methods including smuggling and patronising the black market.

“You do not expect that when you restrict people from gaining access to forex, you will solve the problem. What you will do is open us up to a black market that cannot be controlled. Others may also decide to import through Togo and smuggle goods into the system. The FDA is then unable to regulate what we consume; government is unable to collect taxes,” Mr. Obiri-Agyei articulated.

“The moment Bank of Ghana announced this directive, we knew it was the beginning of the greater challenges that we are going to have; because people might begin hoarding, demand will rise and pressure will be placed on these imported goods – and prices will hike,” added GUTA President Dr. Obeng.

Like his fellow panellists, he expressed admiration for the nation’s aspirations to self-sufficiency; but he said this cannot be done without proper preparation.

He said, for a long time, traders were blamed for the cedi-depreciation due to excessive importation.

Dr. Obeng emphasised that Ghanaian traders are open to sourcing goods locally, but only if Ghana can produce at the same capacity, standard quality and at competitive prices.

He said he believes government should take a measured approach in trying to discontinue the importation of these commodities.

“We have always been of the opinion that local production should be promoted side by side with importation,” he expressed.

  • “2006 World Cup Squad was not afraid of games” – Appiah

Former Ghana captain, Stephen Appiah, has eulogized Ghana’s 2006 World Cup squad for their confidence in Germany, describing them as ‘players who are not afraid of games’.

The Black Stars resurrected their campaign after bouncing back from an opening day defeat to Italy beat Czech Republic in Ghana’s first-ever World Cup appearance.

Speaking on Betway’s “Top 10 World Cup Moments with Stephen Appiah,” the former Ghana captain told host Fentuo Tahiru Fentuo, “I was lucky to play with players who were not afraid of games.

“Because these are games if you lose the first game and at that high stage, you will never go through in the second game playing against, I mean, the second best.

“We showed them that we are not just there to participate. We are there to make a name and we beat them.”

Stephen Appiah made history by captaining Ghana to qualify for its first World Cup in 2006 after several unsuccessful attempts.

He added that the 2-0 win “was a difficult game because we lost the first game against Italy and we are playing with the second-best team in the world. The players that they had [were very good].

“After Gyan scored, we played like 20 minutes and I was telling the boys, ‘I think that today is our day’. We should continue playing like the way we are playing.

“After the game I went to Pavel Nedved, we played together at Juventus, and I was like, ‘did you see the ball that we played with today? Was it Adidas or Nike?’

“I cracked a joke and he started laughing because they didn’t see the ball. We played like 80% of the ball.”

  • FLASHBACK: Qwikloan to cease operations if E-Levy is implemented – GM warns

In opposition to the application of the Electronic Transfer Levy, it was predicted that Qwikloan, a credit facility that enables users to get loans electronically, would cease operations.

“We introduced Quick loan, perhaps Ghana’s most popular financial product, four years ago today, along with our partners MTN and Jump.
We have given out more over GH7 billion to more than 4.2 million people in the four years that Quickloan has been operating.
It’s interesting that the Quickloan anniversary falls as the e-Levy debate continues to flare, “CEO of Afb Ghana, Arnold Parker, said.

The Chief Executive Officer of Afb Ghana, operators of Qwikloan services on MTN has hinted that it would cease to exist in a year if the proposed electronic transaction levy (e-levy) is implemented in its current form.

The 1.75% tax on electronic financial transactions was proposed in the 2022 budget statement presented before Parliament by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, on Wednesday, November 17, 2021.

The Minister explained that the tax measure was to raise revenue to support job creation initiatives, construction of road infrastructure, cybersecurity, and digital infrastructure.

Ken Ofori-Atta was hopeful that the proposal would come into full force in February 2022.

However, this proposal has been widely kicked against by Ghanaians.

The minority group in Parliament rejected the 2022 budget as a result of the proposed e-Levy and other concerns raised in the budget.

MTN Ghana in partnership with Afb GHANA launched the “Qwikloan” service in 2017 to provide convenience to customers in times of need to enhance their business.

The service, dubbed, “Qwikloan” is fast, easy, and convenient which enables customers to access loans using their MTN mobile money platform.

Qwikloan is a 30-day loan. It has flexible payment terms with an interest of 6.9% but a default payment of 12.5% interest charges. It does not need a bank account and guarantor to access it.

However, a Facebook post on November 30, 2021, by the CEO of Afb Ghana Arnold Parker to celebrate four years anniversary, forewarned that the service will fold up should the government go ahead with the e-levy in its current shape.

“Four years ago today, together with our partners MTN and Jump, we launched what has arguably become Ghana’s most utilized financial product -Quick loan. In the 4 years that Quickloan has been in existence, we have disbursed over Ghc7 billion to well over 4.2 million people. Interesting that the Quickloan anniversary comes at a time when heated discussion on the e-Levy rages on,” Arnold Parker stated.

He continued “If I plug in the proposed e-Levy rate into our financials, Quickloan would cease to exist within a year. Yet it is a product like Qwikloan, which has been a lifesaver for millions in their times of need, that has the potential to transform this economy”.

Arnold Parker has in an earlier post advised against free things by the government.

“Let’s turn our attention to building our economy now. A country that’s supposed to have a GDP of $600 billion should not be ok when its GDP is $60 billion. For many decades now we have operated way below our potential and robbed millions of our kith and Skin a decent life. The more free things we promise the people, the more businesses we must allow to flourish to find the freebies. It is time to build and grow Ghanaian businesses.

  • “We’ve been tracking Mohammed Kudus for more than one year” – Barcelona Director

Barcelona Sporting Director, Jordi Cruyff, reveals the Catalan club has been tracking Ghana midfielder, Mohammed Kudus, for more than a year now.

Barcelona have now joined the likes of Liverpool and other top Premier League sides who are reportedly interested in signing the Ajax attacker.

“We’ve been tracking Mohammed Kudus for more than one year. We can’t say now that Barça want Kudus… but he’s attracting interest,” Jordi told Spanish outlet RAC 1.

The 22-year-old has been playing more as a false nine this season for Ajax instead of his preferred number ten position.

Cruyff adds that he has been following the discussions in the Netherlands about which position the Right to Dream Academy graduate should play.

“He’s scoring goals and in Holland, they discuss a lot about his position, so yes – I know him well,” he added.

After struggling for game time at the start of the season, Kudus has been on fire for the Dutch giants since being played as a false nine, scoring 10 goals in 21 games in all competitions.

He is also lighting up the 2022 World Cup with a brilliant display against Portugal and bagging a historic brace against South Korea, and will next play against Uruguay on Friday.

Mohammed Kudus will be integral for Ghana if they are to get past the South Americans and qualify for the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup.

  • No civil society has been engaged on gold-for-oil barter policy – Expert

Kojo Poku, an energy specialist, said that no civil society organizations have participated in the vice president’s gold-for-oil barter strategy to date.

He claimed that the policy’s introduction was hasty since the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) had only recently started talking about the change.

Kojo Poku pointed out that because running policies with CSOs was an essential component of their execution, the vice president ought to have postponed the release.

“Policy credibility is very key. You can count the number of policies that the government has said they would do that civil society had come out to say that it is not possible, it is not going to happen that has happened. There is none,” he is quoted by 3news.com.

He also added: “I don’t even think you can come out with any. Government said they were going to do Agyapa, civil society said it wasn’t going to be possible and Agyapa was not done. GNPC said they were going to do Aker but we said it wasn’t going to be possible to do it and they couldn’t do Aker. PDS, we said it wasn’t going to last, it did not last.

He continued, .”.We in civil society have a track record in analyzing government policies and telling government that if we do not do extensive and proper engagement, this policy will not work and they do not listen, they just go ahead.”

“This seems to be one of those policies. I don’t know who in the energy sector that Dr Amin Antah [Deputy Minister of Energy] said they have engaged but I can assure you that they have not engaged anyone within our space, within the civil society space,” Kojo Poku stressed .

The Energy expert further pointed out that it was surprising to see the announcement made by Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

“I speak to quite a number of them and none of them has been engaged. My little investigation I have done shows that it was an initial discussion at the NPA level and nobody knows why it ended up on the Facebook page of the Vice President,” he noted.

The Vice President in a Facebook post announced that “Government is negotiating a new policy regime where our gold (rather than our US dollar reserves) will be used to buy oil products. The barter of sustainably mined gold for oil is one of the most important economic policy changes in Ghana since its independence.

“The barter of gold for oil represents a major structural change. My thanks to the Ministers for Lands and Natural Resources, Energy, and Finance, Precious Minerals Marketing Company, The Ghana Chamber of Mines, and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana for their supportive work on this new policy. We expect this new framework to be fully operational by the end of the first quarter of 2023,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dubai oil firm ENOC has denied being in talks with Ghana on the gold for oil barter arrangement.

  • YEA partners INZAG Germany to employ over 700 artisans

The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with German construction firm INZAG Germany GmbH for over 700 artisans to be recruited and trained for the construction and rehabilitation of 64.7-kilometre Ashaiman to Akosombo dual carriage road.

The artisans who will be recruited nationwide include carpenters, plumbers, steel benders and many more.

Speaking at a press conference held at the YEA headquarters on Tuesday, November 29th, 2022 to officially sign the agreement, the Chief Executive of the Youth Employment Agency, Mr Kofi Baah Agyepong said, the MoU goes a long way to reinforce the commitment of the agency to providing training, development and upskilling of artisans and to equip them with the quality skills widely sought after by employing firms who need some particular skills to boost their production and achieve their organizational goals.

On the MoU, he said the agreement has been put together with the safety and welfare of workers at heart.

“Ladies and gentlemen, it is critical to highlight that this agreement has been carefully put together with the welfare and safety of the workers at heart. Workers to be employed under this agreement will have their income tax, social security contributions and all statutory payments made on their behalf by INZAG Germany,“ he said.

Again, Mr. Baah Agyepong called on private investors to rely on the YEA for their labour needs.

He reiterated that government alone can not employ the teeming youth unless the private sector intervenes.

“I call on private investors, both local and foreign, industry players, public corporations and enterprises to rely on the YEA for their labour needs. We stand prepared to meet the skills needs of all entities with quality labour that will assist growing firms to achieve their goals.”

  • Delay in approving 2023 budget will push Ghana down the drain – Abena Osei-Asare

Abena Osei Asare, a deputy finance minister, said that the multitude of problems Ghana is now dealing with call for prompt solutions when the 2023 budget is approved.

She asserts that in order to prevent further crises, the Minority side of parliament must support the budget’s adoption.

The deputy finance minister said Tuesday that both domestic and international causes have contributed to Ghana’s economic difficulties.

We confront regional and global issues, there is a continuous IMF negotiation, and we are working on debt operations to reduce our debt levels to levels that are manageable.

“Mr Speaker, little did we know that a global pandemic and a war in Ukraine will bring us down to our knees…The quicker we do something about it, the better. It is in this respect that we are asking our colleagues on the other side to support the government in the revenue measures that we have stated in next year’s budget. Any delay in passing this revenue measure means we are pushing Ghana down the drain,” Abena Osei-Asare stressed.

The debate on the 2023 budget began on November 29, 2022 on the floor of parliament, after which it will be approved by the House in due course.

  • Kanye West and Kim Kardashian settle divorce, agree on equal joint custody and $200K monthly child support for Kim

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian have officially settled their divorce.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, West Kanye and Kardashian agreed on joint custody with “equal access” to their four kids—North, 9, Saint, 6, Chicago, 4, and Psalm, 3.

In addition, Ye will send Kim $200,000 per month in child support. He’s also responsible to take care of 50 percent of the children’s educational expenses, as well as 50 percent of their children’s security expenses.

“As for property, the division of assets is in accordance with their prenup,” a source told TMZ. “And, according to the prenup, both Kim and Kanye waived spousal support.”

In a separate Tuesday report, the outlet added that Ye gave Kim the $4.5 million house he purchased next door. “The home borders Kim’s lot, so she’ll likely just tear it down—as it needs a ton of work—and add to her acreage,” TMZ wrote, adding West still owns a $60M Malibu beach house as well as properties in Calabasas, Chicago, Belgium, and Wyoming.

Kim and Kanye married back in 2014, following her divorce from Kris Humphries. Kim filed for divorce from Ye in February 2021, after seven years of marriage.

Back in February of this year, Kardashian reflected on the couple’s divorce in an interview with Vogue, where the reality TV star explained she “did what made other people happy” for a long time.

“For so long, I did what made other people happy,” Kardashian said. “And I think in the last two years I decided, I’m going to make myself happy. And that feels really good. And even if that created changes and caused my divorce, I think it’s important to be honest with yourself about what really makes you happy. I’ve chosen myself. I think it’s okay to choose you.”

A month after Kim opened up about their divorce, Ye followed suit by taking to Instagram in March and sharing a lengthy poem titled “Divorce,” which arrived two days after Kardashian was declared legally single, with a judge granting her the ability to return to her maiden name.

“Divorce feels like full blown Covid. Divorce feels like your doctor don’t know shit,” Ye’s poem began. “Divorce feels like you’re walking on glass. Divorce feels like you’re running through a glass wall. Divorce feels like you’re being bullied in a class hall. Divorce feels like you’re getting beat up in the mall.”

  • Managing waste is highly prudent to climate resilience – STRANEK

According to the policy think tank Strategic Network (STRANEK), controlling waste is crucial for climate resilience.

STRANEK asserts that sanitation is largely dependent on how trash is managed.

The preservation of the environment, human dignity, and public health are all critically dependent on it.
Making sure that there is efficient waste management is essential to maintaining cleanliness, which is second only to godliness.
Waste is unavoidably produced as a byproduct of human life, which cannot be disputed, according to a statement in their press release.

    Read the full statement below;

*MANAGING WASTE IS HIGHLY PRUDENT TO CLIMATE RESILIENCE – STRANEK

Climate Change has brought disruption in our temperature and weather conditions.

Hitherto, our temperature and weather conditions were predictable but it is not so. Human activities are a contributing factor which have caused more harm than good regarding climate change. Burning of oil, coal, gas and poor management of waste have been some of the causes of our climate change.

Managing waste is a key factor so far as sanitation is concerned. In fact, it is of critical importance to public health, human dignity, climate resilience and environmental preservation.

Indeed, cleanliness being next to Godliness is tied to making sure that there is effective waste management. Of course, it cannot be denied that waste is an inevitable bi-product of human life.

The effective and efficient management of waste is a challenge in Ghana especially in the cities. To be blunt, the way waste is managed is a chief factor which affects climate change.

The rising population growth in the cities have brought about large quantities of waste and the authorities in charge of waste management are overwhelmed in managing the waste in a sanitary manner.

Residents in the cities have an attitude of not disposing off waste in an appropriate manner by littering indiscriminately including burning of rubbish, dumping rubbish into gutters among others.

Clearly, the use of tricycles popularly known as “aboboyaa”, wheelbarrows, power tillers, three-wheeled tractors, headloads et cetera are overly depended on to transport waste and most of these simple equipment owners dispose of the waste through landfill, open dumping, burning and burying.

The treatment and disposal of waste can produce emissions of several greenhouse gases which contribute to global climate change as we are currently experiencing.

Indeed, the climate impact of waste are becoming difficult to ignore due to its contribution towards the human-driven methane emissions (which is part of the greenhouse gas emissions apart from carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide). Landfill opens room for high levels of methane gas and carbon dioxide through the waste decomposition.

STRANEK-Africa has deliberated on this situation and wants to advocate on how city waste can be handled. Recycling waste should be done more than resorting to the landfill method. It goes a long way to reduce emissions as well as greenhouse gases. Albeit the fact that Government is doing something about recycling, it should be encouraged so that everyone can get involved.

Also, there must be strict compliance with existing environmental legislations and bye-laws in the conveyance, handling and disposal of waste. No one should be left off the hook when one is found engaging in illegal disposal of waste.

Government should find ways to stop people from shipping waste products into the country. Companies like Zoomlion Waste Management Experts, Jekora Ventures Limited, Waste Landfills Company Limited, Dispose Green, BD Waste et cetera are actually some of the big waste management companies in Ghana hence it is important for them to up their game to improve on city waste management.

Surely, we should all be involved in building motherland Ghana.

    Signed.

    Nii Tettey Tetteh Esq. LL.M

  • New ways of power generation take centre stage at 2022 Women in Energy Conference in Accra

Gender diversity and widespread engagement of women in the energy sector are reportedly necessary conditions for the development of creative and inclusive solutions for a successful transition to sustainable energy.

Governments and business stakeholders have been asked to take action to remove obstacles to equitable involvement in the transition to low-carbon energy sources.

These submissions came from the Accra, Ghana, Women in Energy Conference in 2022.

The energy sector remains one of the least gender-diverse sectors in the economy, despite recent efforts to promote and encourage women’s participation. Women face structural and cultural challenges and the lack of women in leadership positions in the sector compounds the difficulty in recruiting and retaining female leaders.

There is an urgent need to improve the knowledge and skills of women in activities related to clean energy. The chosen theme for this year’s Women in Energy Conference “Energy Transition: Prospects for Women in Energy” intends to increase awareness of women with regard to Ghana’s current trajectory for the sector and to advance their understanding, leadership and participation in the opportunities presented within a transitioning environment.

The Acting Chief Director at the Ministry of Energy, Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah said women have a role to play in the Energy Transition agenda.

Chief Executive of the Volta River Authority (VRA) Mr. Emmanuel Antwi Darkwa pledged the VRA’s commitment in erasing stereotyping in the Energy sector.

Prof. Nana Ama Klutse is an Associate Professor at the Department of Physics at the University of Ghana, Legon. She said energy issues must be on the front burner for discussions.

The three-day Conference seeks to among other issues encourage women to take advantage of energy transitioning.

Citations were presented to some distinguished females for their role in the Energy Sector.

  • World Cup 2022: Uruguay captain Diego Godin calls on teammates to push to beat Ghana

Captain of the Uruguay national team, Diego Godin has expressed optimism about the chances of securing a win against the Black Stars of the Ghana later this week.

According to him, now is the time for the squad to come together and focus on the much-needed win to advance to the knockout stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

“We have one final left!!! Time to be all together, work, believe and have courage!!! I invite each Uruguayan to push and send good energy from wherever they are, to qualify,” Diego Godin shared on Instagram after Uruguayl’s 2-0 defeat to Portugal.

On his part, striker Luis Suarez also said, “All defeats hurt, especially in a World Cup. Now it’s time to be together as a group and not look for more excuses. Winning and qualifying, that’s our goal. Trust us that we are going to drop everything .”

The two players are expected to be in action for Uruguay when they take on Ghana in the final Group H match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Friday, December 2.

The opponent, Ghana only needs a draw to secure qualification to Round 16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

  • Ex-Cop killed in police shootout accused of catfishing teen and murdering her family

A former Virginia state trooper died in a shootout with police after he allegedly murdered the family of a teenage girl he catfished.

According to CNN, Austin Lee Edwards, 28, was killed by police Friday in Southern California after he reportedly drove across the country to meet a 15-year-old girl he’d duped online. Edwards is accused of murdering 69-year-old Mark Winek, Sharie Winek, 65, and Brooke Winek, 38, at a home in Riverside’s La Sierra neighborhood, and setting the house on fire.

After deceptively developing a relationship with the 15-year-old online, Edwards drove from Virginia to California. He’s accused of killing the teen’s grandfather, grandmother, and mother before abducting the girl and leaving the scene.

Police were summoned to the home after a neighbor called about a girl who appeared distressed while getting into a car with a man, who was identified as Edwards.

Several hours later, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deputies were able to track Edwards’ vehicle down. When they caught up with him, Edwards opened fire before getting fatally shot. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Edwards’ death comes just 10 days after he’d been hired by the Washington County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office.

“It is shocking and sad to the entire law enforcement community that such an evil and wicked person could infiltrate law enforcement while concealing his true identity as a computer predator and murderer,” Washington County Sheriff Blake Andis said in a news release.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Winek family, their friends, officers, and all of those affected by this heinous crime.”

  • Investors to incur substantial losses under debt restructuring programme – Moody’s

According to Moody’s Investor Services, under the government’s proposed debt restructuring program, private creditors and investors are likely to suffer significant losses on their investments.

The agency anticipates that the debt restructuring scheme will have an effect on both holders of local and foreign currency, moving Ghana from an earlier Caa2 rating to Ca rating, which is further into the junk category.

The government planned to restructure both domestic and foreign currency debts as part of the 2023 budget that was submitted to Parliament on November 24, according to a statement released by Moody’s on November 29, 2022. “The Ca rating reflects Moody’s expectation that private creditors will likely incur substantial losses in the restructuring of both domestic and foreign currency debts,” the company said.

“Given Ghana’s high government debt burden and the debt structure, it is likely there will be substantial losses on both categories of debt in order for the government to meaningfully improve debt sustainability,” it further explained.

Despite the possible losses under the debt restructuring programme, Moody’s changed Ghana’s outlook to stable on the basis that the debt restructuring exercise will occur in accordance with creditors under the IMF-supported programme.

“The stable outlook balances Moody’s assumption that the debt restructuring will happen in coordination with creditors and under the umbrella of a funding program with the IMF against the potential for a less orderly form of default that could result in higher losses for private-sector creditors,” the rating firm explained.

Meanwhile, the latest downgrade of Ghana’s credit ratings comes after Fitch Ratings had recently ranked the country at CC which is two levels above default while S&P Global Ratings rated Ghana in CCC+ status placing it in junk territory.

Ghana’s credit rating by Moody’s is now ranked as the second lowest score by the firm. This however puts the country on the same level as Sri Lanka which is already in default.

  • Kanye West to pay Kim Kardashian $200,000 per month in child support as divorce settlement

Kanye West has been ordered to pay Kim Kardashian $200,000 (£167,000) per month in child support in a divorce settlement.

The former rapper and reality TV star will share joint custody of their four children.

Kanye West to pay Kim Kardashian $200,000 per month in child support as divorce settlement

Kardashian filed for divorce in 2021, after eight years with West, who has legally changed his name to Ye.

It comes after several companies cut ties with Ye over controversies including antisemitic comments.

Both parties were declared legally single in March, with Kardashian also dropping “West” from her last name.

Issues around the division of property and custody of their children were resolved in court documents filed on Tuesday.

The two parties should consult with each other on major decisions about their children’s welfare, the documents state.

Expenses for the children’s security, school and college will be shared.

In addition, Ye is expected to pay $200,000 a month in child support – which the New York Post reported is because the children will spend the majority of their time with Kardashian.

The couple have four children: North, 9, Saint, 6, Chicago, 4, and Psalm, 3.

In several statements submitted earlier, Kardashian, 42, had said she “very much” wanted the marriage to be ended, adding that this would “help Kanye to accept” that the relationship was over.

Ye, 45, had previously fought against the separation.

He has faced controversy in recent months, and has been dropped by several brands, including Adidas, Gap and Balenciaga.

The rapper provoked widespread criticism earlier this year after attending Paris Fashion Week wearing a t-shirt bearing a “White Lives Matter” slogan – a phrase often used by white supremacists.

He then claimed his critics were being paid by a secret cabal of Jewish people, a common trope of antisemitism.

Earlier this week, Ye announced his intention to run for US president in 2024.

He previously ran in 2020, but gained just 70,000 votes.

  • ‘Scrap E-Levy, you cannot tax your way out of poverty’ – Economist to government

The contentious Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy), according to Professor Godfred Bokpin, a financial economist at the University of Ghana (UG), should be repealed because it is “conceptually flawed.”

In May 2022, the current administration implemented E-Fee, which imposed a 1.5% levy on electronic transfers.

The purpose of the tax was to “improve domestic tax mobilization, increase the tax base, and provide everyone a chance to contribute to national development.”

After facing stiff resistance, the government’s initial rate proposal of 1.75% was lowered to 1.5%.

The levy has however not generated the expected results as some who are still against it find ways of dodging its payment.

    Revision in budget

Subsequently, the government in its 2023 budget statement disclosed the rate has been revised again from 1.5% to 1%.

This, according to the government, will allow more Ghanaians to use the service.

“Review the E-Levy Act and more specifically, reduce the headline rate from 1.5% to 1% of the transaction value as well as removal of the daily threshold,” Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta said.

Meanwhile, the GH¢100 threshold has been removed.

    Taxation is not a hammer

Prof Bokpin speaking to this in an interview on Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo’ said when a policy is “conceptually wrong” it will be opposed no matter how it is revised.

“Government should delete it (E-Levy). When something is conceptually wrong and it doesn’t meet certain basic principles of taxation, people have issues with it; even if it’s 0.1% . . . CSOs, Private sector said all that they could say about e-levy but sometimes it is as though somebody wants to do it to demonstrate where power lies,” he intimated.

He further stated that when your policy announcement aligns with the expectation of the market, they pick on it and confidence is generated.

“Taxation is not a hammer where you treat everybody else in the market as a nail . . . you cannot tax your way out of poverty; it’s never done anywhere . . . ” he added.
