  • Ati Zigi can save the Cedi -Teephlow eulogies Black Stars goalkeeper

Ghanaian hip-hop artist Teephlow has joined scores of Ghanaians praising Lawrence Ati-Zigi for his brilliant saves that secured Ghana’s three against South Korea.

According to Teephlow, the goalkeeper’s saving skills could be used to save the country’s depreciating cedi against major foreign currencies such as the US dollar.

In a post on his Facebook page on Tuesday, November 29, the award-winning rapper stated, “But on a lighter side, Ati Zigi can save the Cedi ooo, let’s use him well. Super talent, well done bro.”

Lawrence Atizigi, the Ghana Black Stars goalkeeper, arguably became the most talked-about man in Ghana’s clash against South Korea on Monday, November 28 at the Education City Stadium.

Though he was beaten twice by Gue Song Cho, the 25-year-old recovered and further saved all other punches from the South Koreans.

The Stars secured a 3-2 victory over their Asian opponents, which put an end to their five-game winless run in FIFA World Cup matches since their defeat in the South Africa 2014 World Cup quarterfinals by Uruguay.

The one-time FIFA World Cup quarterfinalists will lock horns with Uruguay in a much-anticipated game that will decide who joins already-qualified Portugal at the next stage of the competition.

  • Pig farmers announce another increase in prices of pork

Once again, the Ashanti Regional Pig Famers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has announced an increase in the price of its goods (pork) from GH18 to GH22 beginning December 1, 2022.

The increase is the result of rising production costs, according to Philemon Kwabena Ampongsie, PFAG’s Ashanti Regional Secretary.

During a press conference in Kumasi, Mr. Ampongsie announced the news.

He said that as long as manufacturing costs, such as the cost of pig feed, continue to rise, their businesses will suffer.

He pointed out that in order to save their firm, this has forced an upward adjustment.

He appealed to the public to bear with the Association by accepting the marginal increase as efforts are being made to grow the pig farming industry.

  • Multi-stakeholder approach key to implementation of measures in 2023 budget – KPMG

KPMG, an accounting and auditing organization, is in favor of a thorough consultation process with stakeholders, companies, and individuals to guarantee that the budgetary measures for 2023 can be carried out effectively.

Andy Akoto, the company’s head of advisory and markets, feels that in order to implement the economic recovery measures outlined in the budget read by the finance minister on November 24, 2022, there needs to be steadfast support from multiple stakeholders.

Addressing journalists at a seminar held on KPMG’s 2023 Budget Highlights, Andy Akoto outlined that the rising levels of debt, domestic revenue generation efforts, and credit rating downgrades are major aspects that remain key for government to address.

“With the current theme of the 2023 budget, it is important for government to take a unified approach to reach out to all other economic participants irrespective of their standing in order to get the country out of its current economic challenges,” Andy Akoto said.

“The growth targets for the 2023 budget are modest, with inflation and fiscal deficit remaining high, it has therefore become important that all hands must be on deck in order to shore up our revenues, minimize expenditures and remain innovative to expand our production base to grow revenues,” he added.

Touching on government’s ongoing negotiations with the IMF, Andy Akoto said it is imperative for confidence and a sense of normalcy to be restored in the economy and among investors.

“In as much we are hoping for a deal to be reached, I agree that government can begin to put in place some options to ensure it adopts a more robust and sustainable stance to commit to the things the nation ought to undertake and government must lead the way,” he noted.

Ghana is hoping to secure $3 billion from the International Monetary Fund under an Extended Credit Facility. The deal when reached will help restore macroeconomic stability, among others.

  • Ghana at par with Sri Lanka as Moody’s downgrades credit rating from Caa2 to Ca

Ghana’s credit rating, which had already been reduced from Caa2 to Ca by the international rating agency Moody Investors Service, is now further trash.

Ghana currently has Moody’s second-lowest credit rating, according to a statement the company released on November 29.
However, this places the nation on an equal footing with Sri Lanka, which is already in default.

According to Moody’s, “the Ca rating reflects the assumption that private creditors will likely suffer sizable losses in the restructuring of both local and foreign currency debts envisaged by the government as part of its 2023 budget proposal to Parliament on November 24, 2022.”

“Given Ghana’s high government debt burden and the debt structure, it is likely there will be substantial losses on both categories of debt in order for the government to meaningfully improve debt sustainability,” the statement by Moody’s explained.

With a possible debt restructuring programme on the cards under the IMF, Moody’s however changed Ghana’s outlook to stable.

“The stable outlook balances Moody’s assumption that the debt restructuring will happen in coordination with creditors and under the umbrella of a funding program with the IMF against the potential for a less orderly form of default that could result in higher losses for private-sector creditors,” the rating firm explained.

The recent downgrade of Ghana’s credit ratings comes after Fitch Ratings recently ranked Ghana at CC which is two levels above default while S&P Global Ratings rated the country in CCC+ status placing it in junk territory.

Even if the nurse was rude, intimidating and all the other allegations against her; it did NOT warrant the things the father said or his presence there. That’s the case here, nothing more.

Ghanaian presenter, Bridget Otoo also reacted to the issue.

Meanwhile, management of the National Service Secretariat (NSS) has taken up the matter. It announced in a statement on November 29, 2022 that it has commenced investigations into the matter.

  • World Cup 2022: Uruguay star Luis Suarez identifies Black Stars deficiency ahead of epic clash

Uruguay forward Luiz Suarez says his side will capitalize on Black Stars porous defence to defeat Ghana in the final Group H encounter in the World Cup on Friday.

After two games in Group H, Uruguay have managed just a point after suffering defeat against Portugal on Monday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Ghana earned an important win to boost their chances of progressing to the round of 16.

The Black Stars inflicted a 3-2 win over the Asian giants to boost their chances of qualifying to the knockout phase.

The four-time African champions must avoid defeat against Uruguay to book a spot in the Round of 16.

Ahead of the clash, Suarez, who has tagged Ghana’s game as a do or die says he and his teammates will put their lives and soul on the line to secure qualification.

“We have one point and the final match against Ghana is do and die. We have no option than to win to make our fans happy”

“We are going to put our lives and soul in this last match, Ghana is a good team but we know them, we have beaten them before and we know how to beat them again”

“We have watched their video clips and they have porous defence, we will utilize on that to beat them” he said.

Ghana were denied a semifinal berth at the World Cup courtesy of a Luis Suarez handball incident in the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona forward prevent a goal-bound header from Ghana’s Dominic Adiyiah in the final minute of extra time at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.

Suarez essentially produced a save on the line worthy of a goalkeeper and he was shown a straight red card as a result.

Ghana were also awarded a penalty, but Asamoah Gyan’s attempt from 12 yards crashed into the crossbar, which resulted in Suarez going mental on the touchline and sent the game to a shootout.

Uruguay won the penalty shoot-out to progress to the semifinals with Luis Suarez celebrated for his demonic act.

  • This is why Diana Asamoah has vowed to slay for God

Diana Asamoah is on the quest to ‘slay for Christ’ and also win young souls, this she states influenced her decision to rebrand and appeal to both young and old.

She, however, continues to receive backlash from a section of the public who see everything wrong with her new love for fashion that has witnessed an upgrade in her style of dressing.

According to Diana, she can not preach about prosperity and appear wretched.

“When I preach to others that God is able to bless and then I don’t look it, how will they appreciate the message, what will be the evidence?” she quizzed.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb, the gospel musician explained the importance of appealing to unbelievers, especially the youth.

“I hear people complain when they say I wasn’t like this previously but I have said several times that Christianity is all about growth. I want to back my words with a Bible quote. We have to win souls for Christ, we have to change according to the times…This is not Diana Asamoah’s downfall but instead part of plans to capture the heart of people for Christ. In our case, we will not go naked like them but do what will glorify God,” she added.

Diana Asamoah recalled how she previously judged women who wear hair extensions and makeup but now, she has come to appreciate the essence of ‘good looks’.

“In my days when I was ‘too spiritual’, I just couldn’t get closer to people. It hindered me from getting close to people or even laughing with them. For instance, I could have frowned throughout the interview and judged you because of the wig you’re wearing and even called it maame water.”

  • Gold for oil: This policy will help us a lot – Kwesi Pratt applauds government

Kwesi Pratt Jr., a seasoned journalist, has applauded the government’s decision to use the nation’s gold stockpiles to pay for oil.

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia launched the initiative on Thursday. The government is developing a new regulation to allow the purchase of oil goods using gold.

This policy is intended to address the declining foreign exchange reserves and the demand for dollars from oil importers, both of which are weakening the cedi and driving up living expenses.

When implemented as planned for the first quarter of 2023, the new policy “will fundamentally change our balance of payments and significantly reduce the persistent depreciation of our currency”, Bawumia said.

“The barter of gold for oil represents a major structural change,” he added.

The government estimates to reap revenues to the sum of $3 billion from this trade.

Dr. Bawumia also dispelled rumours that this move is against the use of the US dollar in international transactions.

“Unfortunately some people have misinterpreted this as Ghana being against the use of the US dollar in international transactions. Far from it. We want to accumulate more US dollar reserves in the future”, he noted while speaking at the 2022 AGI Awards in Accra.

He further said; ”If we implement the gold for oil policy as it as envisioned, it will fundamentally change our balance of payments and significantly reduce the persistent depreciation of our currency with its associated increases in fuel, electricity, water, transport and food prices.”

Kwesi Pratt Jnr applauded the government’s efforts to strengthen the local currency and improve lives through the use of the country’s gold to purchase oil which will give the nation 3 billion dollars worth of profits.

“For me, this policy will help us a lot because, according to the Vice President, when we use the gold to buy oil, we will get at least 3 billion. This is even more than the money we are seeking from IMF,” he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s morning show “Kokrokoo”.

He, however, disagreed with the Vice President on his clarification that this policy is intended against the dollar.

Mr. Pratt asked “why should we apologize for doing the right thing?” as, to him, the government owes no one an apology if it is adopting a policy that will give the cedi strength over the foreign currencies.

Prior to the Mundial, reports indicated that Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing the former FC Nordsjaelland forward.

However, reports gathered by indicates that the Gunners are also interested in Kudus and will hope to use his countryman, Partey as a negotiation tool to hijack the move.

Kudus will hope to continue his impressive form when Ghana come up against Uruguay in their final Group H game on Friday at the Al Janoub Stadium.

  • Short distance transport fares now GH¢10 within Accra

There will be more short-distance excursions within Accra, according to the Greater Accra Taxi Drivers Association and the Private Transport Operators.

In a statement co-signed by their Chairman, Badu Anthsonn, and Secretary, Hayford Ayensu, the two transport companies said, “We are advising the general public that, short distance travels within Accra has been increased to GH10.”

Because they “were frightened of losing passengers and burdening them with cost,” the transport operators remarked that “despite the multiple increment of fares,” they have continued to charge “the old fare.”

They further noted that: “Fuel and spare parts prices keep increasing coupled with other taxes which affects” their daily sales.

“The constraints for not increasing the short distance fares is making us run at a loss,” they indicated.

They therefore pleaded with passengers “to come to terms with the new fares.”

  • Pork prices up by 40% in three months

For the second time in less than three months, pig farmers in the Ashanti Region have raised pig product prices.

On December 1, 2022, the price of a kilogram of pork will rise by 20%, from 18 cedis to 22 cedis.

The price of a kilogram of pork was hiked by about 20% in September, from 14 cedis to 18 cedis.

This is a 40 percent increase in pork products throughout the course of the time.

Philemon Kwabena Ampongsie, Ashanti Regional Secretary of the Pig Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG), says the price increase is due to high production costs.

He claims that the growing cost of pig feed has hurt members’ businesses.

According to Mr. Ampongsie, the latest price rises are part of a strategic plan to salvage the pig sector.

He pleaded with the public and pork enthusiasts to help the farmers by enduring the increased cost of the goods.

  • Traders admit to overpricing their products amidst hikes

Some traders at the Dome Market in Accra have admitted to overpricing their products in order to stay in business in the wake of the current economic crisis.

They disclosed this during an interaction with the Independent Ghana’s Jessie Ola-Morris, who paid a visit to the market on November 20, 2022.

The visit followed speculation that some traders are taking advantage of the economic crisis to price their products at exorbitant rates in order to make more profit.

Ghana’s economic woes continue to worsen unabated, despite various measures taken by the government to curb inflation and mitigate the hardships. Inflation remains high, and the prices of fuel and other essential commodities continue to surge.

A (25-litre) gallon of vegetable oil, which was selling for GHC360 at the beginning of the year, was increased to GHC600 in October and is now going for GHC1,000 and over. A bag of 5kg rice which was previously sold at GHC40 at the beginning of the year is now GHC105 and above.

Latest statistics from the Ghana Statistical Service indicate that the national Consumer Price Inflation (CPI) for the country reached a startling 40.4 percent rate in October 2022.

The hikes in fuel prices and the poor performance of the cedi against major currencies are the main contributing factors to the hikes in food prices.

As an import-driven economy that largely relies on international currency such as the U.S dollar ($), demand for such currencies has peaked in recent times, weakening the local currency (i.e the Ghana Cedi). The dollar, which used to sell at GHC5.87 at the beginning of the year, is now selling at GHC113.11 (interbank rate) and GHC114.85 at the forex bureau.

Amidst the hardships, traders have been accused of compounding the woes of the ordinary Ghanaian by overpricing their products in order to make enormous profits.

During a visit to Dome Market, some traders refuted the claim, however, others also conceded to overpricing their products in order to stay in business.

A baby diaper retailer, Auntie Yaa, who asserted that traders are not to blame for the development, explained factors that largely affect the pricing of products.

She used herself as an example to demonstrate how the cost of transportation heavily influences her pricing strategy.

Auntie Yaa mentioned that she buys a pack of diapers at GHC100 from the wholesale shop and slaps an amount of GHC10 on each pack to cover the operational cost, which includes the cost of transport and other expenses involved in getting the products to their final destination (i.e the Dome Market).

“[After] I deduct these expenses from the GHC10 I’m able to make a profit of GHC5 from each pack, then I’m okay,” she said.

She was however baffled over the fact that the prices of the products are not stable on the market: “You make a purchase today and the next day you go back to the market to buy the same product and the price has shot up drastically, that disturbs us a lot,” she lamented.

Her other concern was with how some traders hoard their products and sell them later at exorbitant prices when demand is high. She, thus, called on the government to implement measures to curb such activities.

Another trader, Mary Oforiwaa, did not mince words about the fact that some unscrupulous traders are taking advantage of the free market to overprice their products.

“Undoubtedly, times are hard and when we lament we are told Ghana is not the only country facing an economic crisis but I think we traders are part of the problem. We are doing what we like. Even with transportation that is regulated by GPRTU, every driver has his (/her) own fare they charge, so the government is not solely to blame for the hardships. And with traders, we also price our products how we like,” she said.

Proposing a solution, she called on the government to implement a strategy adopted by the Rawlings regime. Recall that during the Rawlings administration some traders hoarded their products with the intention of selling them later at higher prices when the demand was high. However, the former President found this out, went for the products and conducted a clearance sale on them.

Going down memory lane to her youthful days, she mentioned that “growing up I witnessed the Rawlings regime and during that time, if you hoard your products with the intention of selling them later at an outrageous rate, Rawlings comes for the goods and sells them cheaply – ‘Donkomi’ (to wit clearance sale) – but this government has been dormant in this regard and as a result, everyone is doing what they like,” she said.

“But I believe things will go according to how it’s supposed to be when the government adopts the late former president’s strategy,” she said.

“There are traders who also have to consult other traders before they issue prices for their goods, and all these are not helping,” she lamented.

Kwabena Asiedu Nketiah, the third trader who spoke to the Independent Ghana, acknowledged that he prices his products at exorbitant rates, however, he attributed the development to the cedi-dollar depreciating rate and gross economic mismanagement by the government.

“Looking at the rate at which prices of products are increasing these days it’s above normal but then the dollar-cedi rate affects the prices. We import the products with dollars, so when the cedi falls against the dollar, the prices of our products also go up,” he added.

Additionally, he explained that overpricing the products was the only way to stay in business. According to him, traders risk losing their capital if they do not toe this line.

“With business, it is wrong to wait for your old goods to finish, go for another one before you increase the price of your products. You’ll run at a huge loss if you do that. The moment you hear of a price increment, you instantly have to adjust your prices to the new rate otherwise, you’ll collapse your business,” he said.

Ghana operates a free market. A free market is one where voluntary exchange and the laws of supply and demand provide the sole basis for the economic system, without government intervention. A key feature of free markets is the absence of coerced (forced) transactions or conditions on transactions. Consequently, traders largely decide how their products are priced.

We (the Independent Ghana) discovered that some traders are taking advantage of Ghana’s liberal market to overprice their products.

To curtail this, Martha Ofosuhemaa, another trader, suggested that the government should be keen on consulting manufacturers and market women regarding regulating the prices of products on the market.

She believes the solution to addressing the exorbitant rates at which goods are priced largely lies with manufacturers and market women.

If the prices of every product are embossed on its packaging, this will significantly help in regulating them to make them affordable, she noted.

“Take coke for instance, if the manufacturer writes on the label that the small bottle should be sold at GHC 3.50 pesewas, we traders will go for it and know that that is how we are supposed to sell it so we will,” she said.

“Government should also speak to the market women. I believe if such consultations and negotiations are held regularly, the prices of products on the market will drastically reduce,” she added.

Overpricing in one sector of the economy affects all other sectors since they are interrelated. Astronomical hikes in fuel prices influence transport fares, which in turn affect the prices of products on the market. This comes back to bite the ordinary Ghanaian since it escalates the cost of living. Consequently, Ghanaians continue to lament over the hardships and have on various occasions appealed to the government to roll out measures to check these developments on the market.

  • WAEC releases 2022 WASSCE results today

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) will release the provisional results of the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) today.

The release follows the completion of all its post-examination processes.

A total of 422,883 senior high school (SHS) students across the country sit for the WASSCE exams.

Per the gender demographic presented by WAEC, 203,753 of the candidates were males, while 219,130 were females.

Meanwhile, WAEC disclosed in a statement that its outfit is carrying out ongoing  investigations into examination irregularities detected during and after the exams.

“The Council is hereby urging school authorities and candidates who have been invited to its offices to assist with investigations into suspected cases of malpractice to endeavour to honour the invitations to facilitate the speedy resolution of those cases,” the statement noted.

Examination malpractice has predominantly become part and parcel of Ghana’s educational system.

Students’ involvement in examination malpractice has become increasingly worrying.

In 2021, the entire results of 174 candidates who sat for the 2021 WASSCE were cancelled due to examination malpractices.

Finding better solutions to nipping exam malpractice in the bud, the education think tank Africa Education Watch, admonished WAEC to stop the use of supervisors from the Ghana Education Service (GES) and solely use external supervisors during the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Programme Officer at the Africa Education Watch, Kwasi Nimo Jnr. stated that centres which had GES supervisors recorded high cases of exam malpractices.

He said, “GES staff cannot be made to supervise their own students with an interest for them to pass to enhance their own KPIs. This is what we are recommending because our monitoring report showed that, whenever there are WAEC supervisors on the ground, there is orderliness and no cheating.”

  • Court throws out Techiman South election petition; fines NDC GHc100k

The Wenchi High Court has thrown out the petition against the Techiman South parliamentary election filed by the National Democratic Congress.

The Court has also fined the petitioners GH¢100,000 to be shared between the MP and the Electoral Commission.

The election petition was filed by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in respect of the 2020 parliamentary elections in the Techiman South Constituency.

The NDC had said that it won the Techiman South Parliamentary election but claimed the Electoral Commission (EC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) connived to deny it the seat.

The suit by the NDC sought to quash the declaration of the NPP’s Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah as Techiman South MP, and declare Dr Christopher Beyere Baasongti as the legitimate winner of the Techiman South 2020 parliamentary elections.

The NPP has always maintained its candidate and current Member of Parliament (MP), Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah was legally elected as announced by the Electoral Commission, accusing the NDC of engaging in propaganda.

The Electoral Commission also maintains that Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah polled 49,682 votes as against 49,205 votes for Christopher Beyere of the NDC.

  • NAFCO lauds Ghanaian farmers for role in ensuring food security

Mr. Hanan Abdul-Wahab, Chief Executive of National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), has praised Ghanaian farmers for their contribution to maintaining food security sustenance in Ghana despite threats from abroad and other difficulties.

Mr. Abdul-Wahab has praised the government’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture for its policy initiatives, which led to the nation’s avoidance of what may have been a serious post-covid food crisis.

In a statement to commemorate this year’s National Farmers Day, Mr. Abdul-Wahab claimed that the prolonged COVID outbreaks and their financial consequences in many nations, as well as the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine, had exacerbated what he called “hungry seasons” that were already present in some regions of Africa, including the Sahel and the Horn of Africa.

He cited in particular, the shortage in the supply of fertilizers, due to the Russia – Ukraine war which pushed the world to the brink of a global humanitarian and food crisis, creating higher prices for food.

“In the face of these and other threats, the Ghanaian farmer was resolute and even showed more commitment to the nation and its people and therefore deserve our commendation”, the statement added.

The statement however condemned excessive profiteering by intermediaries within the food supply chain which has increased prices of food even though food is in abundance in various parts of the country.

The National Food Buffer Stock Company is among a number of agriculture-related institutions showcasing their activities and services at this year’s food and agriculture technology exhibition ongoing at the Jubilee Park in Koforidua in the Eastern Region.

The 4-day exhibition is a prelude to the grand durbar on 2nd December to climax the National Farmers Day celebration during which outstanding farmers in all sectors of the agriculture value chain will be honoured.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the exhibition on Tuesday, Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto said government will not relent in its effort to strengthen the country’s food security systems.

He recounted several achievements as a result of the successful implementation of the Planting for Food and Jobs programme since 2017.

The Omanhene of New Juabeng Traditional Area, Nana Dr. Kwaku Boateng III who chaired the function called for increased application and reliance on science, research and innovations to transform the country’s agriculture.
He also commended farmers for their hardwork and persistence over the years.

This year’s National Farmers Day is the 38th since it was instituted by the PNDC government under former President J.J Rawlings in 1985.

Osino in the Eastern Region hosted the first national celebration in 1985.
This year’s event is under the theme “Accelerating agricultural development through value chain addition”.

  • Dr Addison assuages fears on depleting foreign reserves

Dr. Ernest Addison, the governor of the Bank of Ghana, has allayed concerns about the nation’s declining foreign reserves by stating that once the policies set by the government and the Bank begin to show results, everything would return to normal.

The Gross International Reserves (GIR) have decreased to GH6.6 billion as of October this year, representing just 2.9 months of import cover compared to GH10.6 billion a year ago, which represented 4.8 months of import cover, according to the Summary of Economic and Financial Data (November 2022) published by the Bank of Ghana.

In a similar line, the net international reserves (reserves that are easily accessible to the central bank) have decreased from GH7.2 billion to GH2.8 billion over the same time period.

This has raised some concerns over a possible total depletion of the reserves, which would have dire consequences for the economy – especially on the cedi, as it has already lost more than 50 percent of its value to the dollar this year.

But queried at a press conference after announcing a 250 basis points increase in the policy rate, which effectively takes it to 27 percent, Dr. Addison said the depleted reserves result from significant outflow transactions that have taken place this year with no corresponding inflows; adding that these are government obligations which have to be performed at all cost.

“This year alone, even though we didn’t go to the capital market we still had to service our debt. The numbers suggest that we experienced an outflow of US$5.2billion year-to-date in 2022. That is the extent of pressure on the central bank’s reserves because we had to pay our loans, almost US$3billion outflows to service debt – interest and amortization; almost US$800million to pay for energy payments; another US$1.8billion to support the market’s functioning. So we are seeing a situation where from the outflow side these are obligations that you cannot default. As I speak, we are still servicing our debt.”

“And from the inflow side, the only major inflow that has come to support the budget this year is the Afri-Exim bank loan; and then, fortunately, we have the cocoa loan inflow in October. On a net basis we have lost, on a balance of payment basis, almost US$3.4billion as at the end of September; and we are projecting that we will even lose more. By December we could have lost US$4billion,” he said.

The Bank of Ghana Governor however expressed optimism over discussions with the IMF: that when completed and successful, the agreement will add about US$3bilion to the foreign currency buffers, in addition to its own gold purchasing policy which has already kick-started.

“If we are successful with the restructuring operations, the burden on balance of payments, in terms of external interest payment, will also be lifted; so we do not expect to see the same type of outflows we have seen this year…The IMF financing is an important part of the outlook. Hopefully, that will bring in US$3billion over the three-year period. And one of the things we are doing is buying gold to help improve reserve buffers,” he said.

  • Time for Africa’s banks to finance continent’s development – IFC

According to Sérgio Pimenta, vice president for Africa at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), there is no better time than now for Africa’s banks to step up to the plate and finance the continent’s trade and development, which also has the potential to ensure food security, curb soaring inflation, and sustain and create new jobs.

Mr. Pimenta highlighted that the trade financing gap in Africa is expected to be over US$90 billion while speaking at the 2022 Africa Financial Industry Summit (AFIS) organized by Jeune Afrique Media Group in Lome, Togo.

“…Africa’s financial institutions are imperative to the continent’s growth. At this critical time, financial institutions must contribute as an engine for resilience and crisis response for the continent’s transformation.

Growing supply chain disruptions and rising inflation and food security challenges have caused many international banks to pull back from trade finance. Rather than pull back, however, we need to strengthen access to trade finance to help keep African companies afloat and preserve jobs,” he noted.

IFC, he pointed out, committed a record US$9.7billion globally in trade finance – including through its Global Trade Finance Programme, with banks in Africa receiving some of this financing. “Vista Bank in West Africa was one recipient of our financing. IFC provided US$24million to Vista Bank’s subsidiaries in Guinea and Burkina Faso to help the banks finance imports of foodstuffs, raw materials, equipment and other important goods,” he said.

He added that with IFC’s Africa Trade and Supply Chain Recovery Initiative, an extra US$1billion will be available to support regional trade development, help reduce the trade finance gap and help lessen the continent’s reliance on imports – including in more than 20 fragile and conflict-prone economies on the continent.

    Togo’s president comments

Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, President of Togo, called on banks and financial institutions to step to the fore in helping rebuild Africa after the devastating effects of COVID-19 and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis.

“Banks don’t just fund projects but instead very good projects. After two years of continuous crisis, wasting money cannot be a luxury we can afford. Without the support of banks, how do we build roads, energy plants, etc. to help make the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) a possibility? Our common success depends on collaboration between the government and private sectors.

“Togo is working tirelessly to consolidate its role as a natural gateway to West Africa and a platform for the financial industry at the pan-African level, as part of its 2025 roadmap. This summit is a great opportunity to think about the future of African finance,” he said.

    On AFIS 2022 impact

Amir Ben Yahmed, Managing Director of Jeune Afrique Media Group said: “AFIS fills a critical need for the future and sovereignty of the African financial industry. It was necessary to create a platform to serve this sector, so it becomes the engine of growth-policies to accelerate regional integration.

“Bringing together bankers, insurers, telecom operators, fintech, capital market players and regulators is essential if we are to meet these challenges. I would also like to reiterate my gratitude to President Faure Gnassingbé, who was one of the first to believe in this project and support us in its organisation.”

AFIS 2022 is held with ambitions of the continent’s economic recovery through the development of a competitive, innovative, inclusive and sustainable financial industry. The event – organised in partnership with IFC, the World Bank Group’s private sector arm, and the Republic of Togo – brings together more than 800 high-level decision-makers from Africa’s financial sectors.

Over the course of two days, more than 30 conferences, workshops and roundtables allowed African industry leaders to contribute to the continent’s economic recovery. AFIS is positioned as a key forum for dialogue between representatives of the public (ministers of economy and finance, central bankers, regulators) and private sectors (heads of the largest financial institutions, bankers, insurers, fintech and mobile money operators, and capital markets).

  • Qatar 2022: Lawrence Ati Zigi is having a great World Cup – Otto Addo

Black Stars head coach, Otto Addo, has applauded goalkeeper, Lawrence Ati Zigi, for his impressive outings in Ghana’s opening two at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Ati-Zigi was handed the first-choice role ahead of the tournament following injuries to Jojo Wollacott and Richard Ofori, ruling them out of the competition.

In the two games against Portugal and South Korea, the shot-stopper has been crucial for the Black Stars and has kept hopes alive ahead of the final group game against Uruguay.

‘’I think it’s been a great tournament up to this point for him, he really did well especially in the last game, he had some great saves,’’ Addo told the GFA Media.

‘’We knew before that the goalkeepers we have are almost all on the same level so it was very, very sad when we got the news that Joseph Wollacott and Richard Ofori were not able to come due to injuries.”

‘’But on the other hand, we were surely confident that we have other goalkeepers like Ati Zigi, Manaf Nurudeen and also Danlad Ibrahim who are really doing well in training and Zigi obviously playing very, very, good,” he added.

Ati-Zigi will hope his qualities will be key on Friday at the Al Janoub Stadium when Ghana take on Uruguay in the final Group H game.

  • FLASHBACK: Akufo-Addo, Mahama go head-to-head on macro-economic management track records

The track records of John Mahama and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo were compared a week before the 2022 elections to enable Ghanaians to make an educated choice based on prior accomplishments.

Ghana’s electorate will soon have to decide whether to give Nana Akufo-‘s administration Addo another term of four years in office or to reinstate his immediate predecessor, John Dramani Mahama, to the position he had held for four years and five months before his bid for a second full four-year term was rejected at the polls in 2016.

This means that for the first time in the history of the Fourth Republic, voters will be able to choose based on the respective track records of the two leading presidential candidates (who indeed are the only ones with even the faintest chance of winning) rather than just relying on the manifestos of the parties they lead – the incumbent New Patriotic Party and the opposition National Democratic Congress respectively.

This is crucial – with regards to macro-economic management, which is the most pivotal aspect of political governance by a long way, both parties are promising more or less the same things, these being adherence to prudence with regards to addressing the key performance indicators of the economy.

This means aiming to keep the fiscal deficit low; indeed the fiscal responsibility act caps it at five percent per annum but the exigencies of combating COVID-19 has necessarily suspended this indefinitely. It also means keeping inflation low; although there are no quantitative limits in palace, single-digit consumer inflation is the generally accepted objective Crucially, both parties commit to curbing the inordinate growth in the public debt which instructively passed the sustainability threshold of 70 percent of Gross Domestic Product recently, a situation delayed for several years by the economic machinations of both major parties during their most recent respective tenors in office.

It is also instructive that despite their continued commitment to achieving these key objectives when in power -and their ferocious criticism of their opponents for not achieving them when they are in power – neither has been particular successful at fulfilling them.

With regards to their plans for the productive sectors of the economy, each party offers significant variations of basically the same theme for achieving accelerated economic growth but promises to win votes seem to have taken precedence over reality in terms of what can actually be done. While both parties are guilty of this to varying degrees, the NDC in particular is offering policy initiatives that would simply be impossible to fulfill.

Therefore voters would do best to make their impending electoral decisions based on which of the two candidates did better in achieving the universally agreed macro-economic goals, while in office.

In our tale of the tape, we have necessarily had to adopt the following methods.

Although former President John Dramani Mahama assumed office in August 2012, following the sudden death of his predecessor, Professor John Atta Mills, we use January 2017 as his starting date because we wish to use full year figures for our analyses. Besides it is assumed that during the last five months of 2012 he was simply executing the plans and policies of his predecessor, rather than his own.

However it should be noted that this works to Mahama’s advantage in that the economy suffered arguably its worst deterioration with regards to key macroeconomic indicators during that five month period so our method of analyses incorrectly assumes he inherited an economy in significantly worse shape than he actually did.

With regards to our analyses of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s tenor we have taken into account the distortionary effects of the outbreak of COVID 19 in 2020. Therefore, we are using end 2019 as his end of tenor position in assessing his performance, although we are also placi8ng the latest available figures for 2020 side by side, for information purposes.

    ECONOMIC GROWTH

    MAHAMA :

Former President John Dramani Mahama began his full four-year term in office at a time Ghana had just recorded an economic growth rate of 9.3 percent. Indeed, Ghana was coming off a period of extraordinary growth propelled by investment in the emergent upstream oil and gas sector, a period during which the country achieved the highest growth rate in the world in 2011, at 14.4 percent.

However a combination of the global economic slowdown brought about by lingering effects of the global financial crisis, the collapse of global commodity prices – including those for gold, cocoa and crude oil, Ghana’s main exports – and fiscal indiscipline at home, thereafter cut growth significantly. In turn this persuaded Ghana to turn to the International Monetary Fund for a programme to restore macro-economic stability and the IMF in typical fashion put the country into a demand-management programme which put precedence on the restoration of stability rather than growth. In his final ye4ar in office, Ghana’s economic growth rate had fallen to 3.4 percent.

    AKUFO-ADDO :

Inheriting the 3.4 percent growth rate left by Mahama in his final year, incoming President Nana Akufo-Addo had promised to replace demand management with supply side, expansionary economic policy to accelerate growth and create direly needed employment opportunities. However, initially he was constrained by the IMF’s insistence on demand management, which indeed was prudent under the prevailing circumstances of the time.

Consequently his supply side thrust was only fully introduced in 2019, as Ghana exited the programme in April of that year.’ However the IMF had accepted a measured shift towards expansionary economic policy before the end of its programme.

By 2019, Ghana had resumed strong economic growth, posting 6.7 percent growth in that year. This year his government had aimed at 7.3 percent growth (although based on past experience this was unlikely to have quite been achieved), but COVID 19 has spoiled the party. Indeed at a time Ghana expected only marginal growth of 0.9 percent, although it now seems the economic slump has been shorter and shallower than originally anticipated, and so growth is now projected at about two percent.

    INFLATION

    MAHAMA :

Former President Mahama inherited a consumer price inflation rate of 13.5 percent in January 2012 although this is not quite correct; actually inflation was considerably lower in August 2012 but it spiked upwards sharply as the government went on a major deficit financing spree in the run up to the 2012 general elections which propelled inflation upwards, due to the huge liquidity injection government had given the economy during those few months.

The IMF ‘s interventions helped in the battle against inflation but in the run up to the 2016 elections the Mahama administration again lost the plot and consumer inflation by the time he left office had risen again to 15.4 percent.

    AKUFO-ADDO :

President Akufo Addo promised to use fiscal consolidation to bring down inflation despite his expansionary economic plans and indeed he was fairly successful in this. The data indicates that before COVID 19 came and upset everything, by the second half of 2019 inflation had been brought down to its lowest level since the beginning of the 4th republic, falling to below eight percent consistently.

The truth though is that though his administration brought inflation into single digits, of just under 10 percent, the fall in inflation to below 8 percent was simply the result of the rebasing of the inflation computations by the Ghana Statistical Service. While this is not unusual – lots of other countries do it once in a while – critics of the government on Ghana point to the unusual practice of failing to state the results of the old computations alongside the rebased figures as evidence that the Government of Ghana rebased the computations for political rather than economic reasons.

Under the rebased inflation computations, the surge in inflation brought about by COVID 19 earlier in the year has since been curbed bringing inflation down to 10.1 percent by October this year.

    EXCHANGE RATE DEPRECIATION

    MAHAMA :

The depreciation of the cedi was arguably Mahama’s Achilles Heel. Apart from fiscal indiscipline leading to too many cedis pursuing too few dollars, the central bank leadership during all but his final year adopted an ill-advised strategy of demand management in addressing the exchange rate. This in turn destroyed confidence in Ghana’s forex supply capacity and consequent speculative trading did the rest. Mahama inherited a cedi depreciation rate of 17.5 percent in 2012 – although again this was largely due to his own fiscal indiscipline during his first five months in office as he sought to win re-election for a full four year turn. In 2013, his first year in office, the cedi actually depreciated by some 30 percent during the first half of the year alone. But after a similar first half of 2014, the central bank reversed its demand management directives restoring confidence to the local forex market and the cedi consequently appreciated sharply, recovering much of the ground it had hitherto lost to the dollar.

This was the harbinger of an extended period of cedi stability but in 2016 during the run up to the general elections, the government’s fiscal indiscipline again saw significant cedi depreciation of 9.3 percent.

    AKUFO-ADDO:

The Akufo –Addo administration came with the promise to stabilize the exchange rate. However it failed, with the cedi being rated by Bloomberg as the world’s worst performing currency during the first quarter of 2019, before recovering to record full year depreciation of 12.9 percent – until its final year, when despite COVID 19 and the fact that it is an election year, it has achieved the lowest cedi depreciation since the currency was floated in 1985, at 3.2 percent during the first 10 months of the year.

Importantly, this year’s performance is sustainable, deriving from a trade surplus, historically high gross international reserves, strong inward remittances, and of crucial importance, forward forex sales by the Bank of Ghana which has pulled the rug out from under the feet of currency speculators who have tended to take positions against thee cedi for profit.

    FISCAL DEFICIT

    MAHAMA

Once again, Mahama gets the benefit of inheriting an inordinately high fiscal deficit figure whereas in actual fact, he brought it about himself. The fiscal deficit for 2012 was 12.0 percent but Mahama did not inherit it; rather he caused it. Instructively, barely a month before he suddenly died, Professor Mills had gone to Parliament to request approval for supplementary budgetary expenditure because Ghana was leading for a fiscal deficit of 4.5 percent for the year. Parliament approved extra spending that would take the deficit to a little over 6 percent. Somehow though, after the Presidency changed hands, Ghana ended the year with a 12 percent deficit, twice what had been targeted even with supplementary spending.

Fiscal profligacy under Mahama ended when the IMF programme started and the deficit was steadily reeled in to more sustainable levels until 2016 when once again the Mahama government lost the plot in the face of general elections, leaving office with a 9.0 percent fiscal deficit.

    AKUFO-ADDO

President Akufo-Addo, on assuming office worked at fiscal consolidation with successive annual reductions in the fiscal deficit in 2017 and 2018. Instructively, however, upon exiting the IMF programme this began to change. Without the rebasing of Ghana’s economy in 2018 the fiscal deficit would have been higher than the previous year, not lower. Indeed the 2019 fiscal deficit was higher than 2018’s although still within the 5 percent imposed by the Fiscal Responsibility Act, at 4.8 percent.

This year’s deficit target was 4.7 percent, although the conventional wisdom was that if in reality it could be kept at not more than the 5 percent statutory cap it would count as a win.

COVID 19 has completely changed the situation, however, with government now having a revised target of a massive 11.8 percent. The extraordinary circumst6ances, however, make it impossible to compare this against any previous year. Suffice it to say however that the revised target has allowed government to accommodate all its considerably large election-motivated expenditure – both budgeted and impulsive expenditure – without going over the target.

    PUBLIC DEBT

This comparison is done in US dollar terms to remove the distortionary effects of cedi depreciation.

    MAHAMA :

He inherited a total public debt equivalent to US$18,832.77 million, this translating into 49.4 percent of GDP at the time. Aggressive borrowing during his tenure – he started what has now become a tradition of successive administrations in Ghana of doing a Eurobond issuance each year – led to his leaving a public debt of US$ 29,203.8 million four years later, which translated into debt to GDP ratio of 56.8 percent.

    AKUFO-ADDO

This will count as one of his biggest failings. After justifiably criticizing the Mahama administration roundly for the amount of new debt it had added on both in absolute terms and as a proportion of GDP, as well as its effect in crowding out government spending on both recurrent items and on capital projects, his administration has done much the same thing.

The statistics indicate that the debt to GDP ratio only rose from 56.8 percent to 63.0 percent over the three years 2017 to 2019, this is basically because of the rebasing of the economy in 2018. In absolute terms, the public debt rose from US$29,203.8 million to US$39,344.2 million during that time. This means it added on almost the same amount in three years as the Mahama administration added on in four years.

Mahama’s supporters point out that his borrowing left more brick and mortar infrastructure to show for it, while the Akufo-Addo administration spent a large part of its borrowing on non-quantifiable things such as the financial sector reforms which has added nearly GJHc20 billion to the public debt.

Akufo- Addo’s supporters retort that what it borrowed for is no less important than the infrastructure Mahama borrowed to implement; that Akufo Addo was also left with a much bigger debt servicing bill than Mahama inherited; and that some of the things Akufo-Addo borrowed for are still projects in progress ( such as railway infrastructure and One district one factory initiative) which will soon show their usefulness.

    GROSS INTERNATIONAL RESERVES

    MAHAMA

Mahama inherited gross international reserves of US$5,835 million at the start of 2013 and left leaving just about the same level, at US$5,867 million four years later. The level of reserves was inordinately low and in part explains why the cedi suffered heavy depreciation during his tenor. Indeed at times Ghana’s reserves fell to levels barely enough to cover two months’ worth of imports.

    AKUFO-ADDO

During his tenor Akufo-Addo deliberately built Ghana’s reserves to historically high levels, at a time in 2019 actually exceeding the US$10 billion mark. They ended that year at US$7,563 million and by October 2020 had been beefed up again to US$87,655 million, enough for over four months of imports.

This has been crucial in both providing the cedi with exchange rate stability, unlike in previous times, and in securing better terms from international lenders for Ghana’s dollar denominated sovereign bond issuances on international capital markets.

The comparisons put the Akufo Addo administration ahead with regards to macro-economic management, but while this provides the foundation for a stronger economy it does not automatically translate into one; the productive sectors have to be handled well if good macro-economic management is to be taken advantage of.

On the upside, ahead of the 2020 general elections both major parties know what is required with regards to prudent macro-economic management will have learnt from past mistakes. The question now though is who can put their knowledge to best use and who can exercise the most fiscal discipline.

  • Podcast: What is love without money? – Journalist defends notion that men are to cater for their women

A journalist with the Independent Ghana, Amanda Cartey, has made a strong case for why men should cater for their wives or girlfriends.

She says women have to look good and be comfortable and men have a role to play in this.

She argued that despite the fact that a women may have a job or a regular source of income, men also have a responsibility to ensure their spouses are okay.

She made the remarks on the latest edition of the Listen Up podcast released on Tuesday, November 29, 2022.

Another journalist Andy Ogbarmey-Tettey contested her position.  Andy on the other hand believes otherwise.

He argued that women also have a role to play (financially), therefore, it is not entirely the responsibility of the man to cater for his woman.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo agrees terms on €500m contract with new club

Cristiano Ronaldo has agreed terms on a new deal with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr, for a deal that will see him overtake Kylian Mbappe on the pay scale as the word’s highest paid player.

Marca say that a deal between the two is close and with terms agreed, it appears it only remains for Ronaldo to pull the trigger.

Ronaldo departed Manchester United shortly before the World Cup began. Seemingly none of the approaches from either Europe or Major League Soccer have come close to reaching the deal that Al-Nassr are proposing.

He would be paid €200m per year, and sign a deal for the next two-and-a-half seasons. That deal would even out as €500m in total, it is not yet clear whether there will be added signing bonuses. The 37-year-old would be 40 by the time that contract expires.

It would mark the end of an era and a stepping down from the pedestal of top level football for Cristiano Ronaldo. In a career so far spanning two decades, Ronaldo has played 949 games, scored 702 goals and given 223 assists in European football. Perhaps one of the most divisive characters in football history, there is no doubt European football will not be the same without him.

  • A draw could be good for us but we want to win – Otto Addo on Uruguay clash

Ghana head coach, Otto Addo, says the Black Stars will be going in for a win against Uruguay eventhough a draw could be enough to them through to the next stage of the FIFA World Cup.

The Black Stars and Urugauy go head to head on Friday, December 2, with a place in the round of 16 of the competition up for grabs.

A win over South Korea on Monday means Ghana currently occupies the second soot in Group H with three points, two above both South Korea and Uruguay.

Addo’s side will advance to the next stage if Ghana draws and South Korea fail to beat Portugal by a two-goal margin, while a win sees the Black Stars also go through regardless the result from the other game.

However, Addo is keen on victory for the Black Stars rather than playing for a draw.

“The good thing is that, at the end if it’s a draw it is also good for us but we want to win this game,” he told the GFA Media.

“I’m not thinking too much about revenge because for me it’s just a normal game. Surely I was really sad when I watched the scene in 2010.

“It was a big chance for Ghana to proceed to the next stage but it happened 12 years ago.”

The Black Stars final group game is scheduled for Friday, December 2, at the Al Janoub Stadium with kickoff at 3PM.

  • World Cup 2022: Kudus Mohammed has a bright future – Ghana captain Andre Ayew

Ghana captain, Andre Ayew has lauded Kudus Mohammed, saying the 22-year-old has a bright future.

Andre’s kind words come after the Ajax star’s impressive performance against South Korea on Monday.

Kudus scored twice as the Black Stars recorded a 3-2 win over the Asian side to boost their chances of playing in the next round of the ongoing 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Speaking after the game, the Al Sadd forward said the world is yet to see the best from the former FC Nordsjaelland forward.

“He has a bright future in front of him,” Andre said.

“We know this, I know this, Ghana knows it now, the world is going to know it. You’ll see, more is coming from my boy

“Hopefully, he can keep on shining because he has a really bright future,” Andre Ayew said.

Ghana will face Uruguay in their final group game on Friday at the Al Janoub Stadium with kick-off at 15:00GMT.

The Black Stars must draw or win to be able to play in the last 16.

“He just needs to adjust a few things concerning his movement and will be fine.

  • Davido son’s drowning: Could tragedy improve Nigeria’s safety for swimmers?

The drowning of the three-year-old son of Afrobeats star Davido in the swimming pool at his home in Lagos last month has thrown a spotlight on the safety of swimmers in Nigeria.

The death of Ifeanyi Adeleke came four years after the one-year-old son of another Nigerian singer, D’Banj, died in similar circumstances.

Having access to a swimming pool in Nigeria is rare, and mostly the preserve of the wealthy, but it is something that many aspire to so basic safety measures and knowing how to swim could be vital to saving lives.

Although their city is surrounded by water – numerous lagoons and waterways, as well as the Atlantic Ocean – many Lagosians are unable to swim.

“This is one death too many,” says Bolanle Edwards of Lagos-based Strap and Safe Child Foundation, referring to Davido’s son.

She has been calling for increased pool safety for children across the country for over a decade.

“This has been happening back-to-back from 2018 to 2022… in hotels, beaches and private homes as well,” she adds.

Davido son's drowning: Could tragedy improve Nigeria's safety for swimmers?
What happened to Davido’s son has led some to think more about how to ensure people are safe around water

    Two issues are key:

    • Increasing basic safety around pools and beaches
    • Learning how to swim.

At one of Lagos’ beautiful seafronts there was a clear awareness of about these points.

Parents watching their children splash in the foamy waves of Landmark Beach reflected on the news about Davido’s son.

“I was extremely sad because it’s not something you wish on anyone,” said Femi Nedd, whose three children were enrolled in classes to learn how to swim before they could walk.

“Swimming is not a luxury, it’s a life skill because you might never know when you need it.”

Though her children have been swimming unaided since they were four, she says supervision is key and the presence of trained lifeguards at the public beaches they use gives her reassurance.

Adeola Folivi said her 12-year-old daughter, a Davido fan, was distressed at hearing what happened to the star’s son – and drove home the importance of swimming lessons.

“I encourage my nieces and nephews and friend’s children [to enrol in swimming lessons] – as long as it is done in a proper environment, with the proper precautions taken, with the proper safety devices,” she said.

Davido son's drowning: Could tragedy improve Nigeria's safety for swimmers?
Safety measures have been introduced at Lagos’ private beaches

Those with private swimming pools have also been hit by the news of the drowning.

Adekunle Akanbi, who shares a pool with his neighbour in the south-western city of Ibadan, became very worried after hearing about the Davido tragedy.

He told the BBC that the children in his compound would now be more closely monitored around the pool: “They can swim perfectly but still under proper supervision.”

This is the same for Nora Chukwuma in the city of Port Harcourt in the south-east.

She said all doors leading to her pool area were properly locked to stop children from getting close to the water without an adult present.

“We are currently working on installing a pool barricade,” she added.

Statistics on drowning in Nigeria are hard to get hold of but safety campaigner Ms Edwards says that when it comes to swimming pools, there have been 18 reported drowning deaths over the last four years. Eight of those happened this year alone.

The World Health Organization (WHO) lists drowning as the third leading cause of death through unintentional injury worldwide.

It says an estimated 236,000 people die from drowning every year. Around 90% of these deaths occur in low- and medium-income countries like Nigeria.

In an effort to prevent such accidents, the Lagos state government in September urged swimming pool operators and beach owners to beef up the precautionary measures around their facilities.

In 2017 it introduced state-wide safety regulations that sought to ban operating a swimming pool service without permission and a lifeguard in place. But without proper enforcement and prosecution these are often ignored.

Ms Edwards says that since the introduction of trained lifeguards, there are now fewer accidents at Lagos’ private beaches.

But few states have similar regulations in other parts of the country.

Knowledge about how to swim, as well as the dangers of water, are not widespread.

Davido son's drowning: Could tragedy improve Nigeria's safety for swimmers?
Teacher Tough Atelemo says knowing how to swim is a vital survival skill

In 2014 the Nigerian navy said it was introducing compulsory swimming lessons for all its officers after it noticed many personnel were not good swimmers.

As swimming is a survival skill, parents need to consider it as important as other skills, argues swimming coach Tough Atelemo, who has taught hundreds of young kids – some as young as six months – over the last two decades.

“When you are training a child, you have to train them how to survive,” she says.

However, she admits that at a price of about $220 (£200) for 10 lessons, they are out of the reach of many Nigerians.

She adds that it should be included in the early years school curriculum, which is also a recommendation of the WHO.

Installing guardrails, covering pools, fencing in swimming pools and putting children in play pens when they are close to the water are some practical measures that could reduce the risks around water, the WHO says.

Ms Edwards echoes this, saying that pools should have a fence on all sides separating them from the house.

Technology, such as motion-activated lighting and CCTV, can also help protect people, especially children, from the risk of drowning, says architect Daniel Ette.

But “nothing absolutely replaces physical barriers and adult supervision”, he adds.

It is unclear what kind of safety measures were in place at Davido’s home.

A police autopsy concluded that his son died from drowning but investigations continue. They are reviewing the CCTV footage of the house, while they hold Davido’s nanny and cook in custody for further questioning.

  • Elderly persons need sex too — Gynecologist

Professor Richard Adanu, Rector, Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS), says “elderly people need sex” and asked health facilities to provides services that promote their reproductive health.

“…Another aspect of the health of the elderly that is often overlooked is reproductive health. The aged also have sex. They have sexual feelings; they need sex and must not be overlooked.”

Professor Adanu said this at the launch of the book: “Contemporary Issues in Ageing in Ghana”, from scholars at the Center for Ageing Studies, College of Humanities, University of Ghana and the Geriatric Fellowship Programme, GCPS.

The book, first of its kind from the Center, was authored by over 30 scholars and edited by Professor Charles Mate-Kole of the Center and Rev Professor Akye Essuman of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.

It advocates the study of ageing in many facets – health, science and socioeconomic perspectives.

Speaking as the Guest of Honour, Prof Adanu, also a Gynecologist, noted that many elderly people had been living in silence over their sexual health situations and said it was about time healthcare givers paid attention to their reproductive health.

He commended the Family Health Division of the Ghana Health Service for its efforts at helping the aged, with sexual health problems and said such services should be at all health facilities as the aged population increased.

“The stigma that prevents adolescents from accessing reproductive health care is the same stigma preventing the elderly. This is because we don’t think about the sexuality of the aged, we don’t even talk about it,” he said, adding that, that must stop to prevent the elderly from taking concoctions that affected their health.

It has been estimated that the world’s population of people at 60 years will be 2.1 billion by 2050, with sub-Saharan Africa being one of the fastest growing ageing populations.

Ghana’s ageing population currently is around two million.

Experts say men, 40 years and above need regular sex to lower risk of prostate cancer and to decrease blood pressure by opening the blood vessels.

They say regular sex also helps the aged –men and women- to ease the body and lull the mind and spirit.

It also helps minimises the risk of incontinence-lack of voluntary control over urination and defection.

Professor Angela Ofori-Atta of the Department of Psychiatry, University of Ghana Medical School, who reviewed the book, said, chapter one of the book revealed that genetic factors only accounted for 25 per cent difference in human lifespan.

“The book also revealed that nutritional and environmental factors determine the rest,” she said.

Professor Ofori-Atta called for the urgent passage of the Aged Persons Bill by Parliament.

The first copy of the 347-page book was bought at GH¢ 5,000.

  • Young talents keep me on my toes – Sarkodie

African music heavyweight Sarkodie has disclosed that one of the reasons he is not complacent is because of the fast-rising talents on the African music scene.

He made the closure at British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Radio 1Xtra’s Afrobeats Concerto in collaboration with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

The historic event was organised to mark 20 years of Radio 1Xtra’s dedication to showcasing Black music and culture and was hosted by Eddie Kadi, Remi Burgz and DJ Edu.

Kadi engaged Ghanaian rapper and businessman Sarkodie on his impressions about the next generation of “young talented African artistes coming out of the continent, particularly Ghana, your homeland.”

The SarkCess Music Chief Executive Officer (CEO) answered: “It’s beautiful, I love it.

“It puts me on my toes,” he revealed, adding “and at the same time I have hope that what we built is going to be protected and it’s going to be there for a minute. So I am super proud to see all these superstars, I know that even when I retire, Afrobeats is going to be alive. So big shouts to [all], especially the superstars coming out from my hometown GH [alias] Ghana.” He drew robust applause from the cosmopolitan audience.

The 37-year-old father of two, for his set, performed his ‘Lucky’, ‘Rollies and Cigars’ and ‘Labadi’ hits.

Before the ‘Rollies and Cigars’ performance with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, the two-time BET award-winner had declared: “I love Afrobeats. Afrobeats is the biggest genre out there right now.”

Legendary British DJ Tim Westwood has called him a pioneer of the Afrobeats fever sweeping across the world.

At the 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs), he was honoured as the ‘Artiste of the Decade’.

That same year, he became the pioneer winner of the Black Entertainment Television’s (BET) brand new Best International Flow award.

Born Michael Owusu Addo, Sarkodie’s latest project is a 10-track album called ‘Jamz’. It features some of the hotshots on the Afrobeats seen: Black Sherif, Joeboy, Oxlade, King Promise, BNXN and Lojay.

The project is in celebration of 10 years of Sarkodie’s second album titled ‘Rapperholic’; the namesake of his annual, star-studded December concert.

‘Jamz’ is an immediate follow-up for his 2021 Hiphop project titled ‘No Pressure’. With this album, he noted the new music stars on the scene but asserted his dominance as the king he is touted to be.

Sarkodie has been an active professional rapper for almost 20 years. He is Africa’s most decorated rapper that has ever lived.

  • BBC’s Afrobeats Concerto 2022: Sarkodie displays patriotism and pizzaz

In a multi-coloured jacket over black leather trousers, with white sneakers to finish off, Ghana’s Hiphop/Hiplife titan Sarkodie has performed and displayed his culture, stunning rap gift, and advertised his country with musical support from the British Broadcasting Corporation’s (BBC) Philharmonic.

His first time with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Michael Owusu Addo, alias Sarkodie, was introduced as an “absolute legend,” by host Remi Burgz during the BBC Radio 1Xtra Afrobeats Concerto.

“What’s up beautiful people, I go by the name Sarkodie and I’m about to take you guys on a trip, all the way to Ghana,” were the rapper, hailed as Obidiponbidi’s first words on the stage.

He then performed his MOG Beatz-produced hit ‘Lucky’ featuring Rude Boy, half of Nigerian music duo P-Square.

“I love Afrobeats. Afrobeats is the biggest genre out there right now,” he noted again.

“I’m an Emcee, I rap and I love this next song,” he added and proceeded to perform his ‘Rollies and Cigars’ KaySo-produced hit from the 2021 ‘No Pressure’ album.

At the end of the performance, Mr Addo was asked how he feels about the passion with which his fanbase, Sark Nation, supports him.

“It’s still overwhelming. I need to stab myself out of it because it’s been over 10 years and more, and I’m humbled by it,” a pensive Sarkodie reflected.

Eddie Kadi, co-hosting with Ms Burgz, wondered about the rapper and businessman’s thoughts on the next generation of “young talented African artistes coming out of the continent, particularly Ghana, your homeland.”

The SarkCess Music Chief Executive Officer (CEO) answered: “It’s beautiful, I love it, it puts me on my toes and at the same time I have hope that what we built is going to be protected and it’s going to be there for a minute. So I am super proud to see all these superstars, I know that even when I retire, Afrobeats is going to be alive. So big shouts to [all], especially the superstars coming out from my hometown GH [alias] Ghana.” He drew robust applause from the audience.

With large pieces of the legendary kente cloth hanging above him, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the Compozers behind him, and the Salford studio audience in front of him, Obidi asked all to visit Ghana.

“If you guys take a trip to Africa, make sure you check out Ghana, make sure you come to Ghana [where] there’s a beautiful place called Labadi,” he said as an introduction to the performance of his latest Afrobeats/Amapiano hit with 5Star signee King Promise.

The only time the African rap heavyweight took off his iconic shades was when he did the intimate second verse of ‘Labadi’.

The most decorated rap artiste in African music history, Sarkodie performed in Akan/Twi, English and Pidgin.

Nigeria’s CKay, Maleek Berry and Pheelz also performed. So did Kenya’s Nikita Kering.

The first ever Afrobeats Concerto, with the full complement of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, marks 20 years of the BBC 1Xtra’s dedication to showcasing Black music and culture.
