  • How Miss Malaika beat Miss Ghana as nation’s top pageant

After several decades of existence, Miss Ghana which was launched to propagate Ghana’s cultural values and beautiful diversity to protect our heritage and our culture has been dogged by controversy leaving the brand tattered and overtaken by Miss Malaika.

The Miss Ghana Pageant has been mired in controversy with allegations of pimping of girls and the use of the so-called Queens to solicit for sponsorship with strict targets.

Past Queens have alleged that fundraising targets no matter how it is achieved tend to influence who eventually wins.

Miss Ghana franchise owners, Exclusive Events Ghana Limited headed by Miss Ghana 2004, one Inna Patty has herself been considered controversial, according to former Queens.

The Miss Ghana has been repeatedly accused of being an “escort agency” by former contestants some of whom were “stripped” of the crown after exposing the pageant.

According to Antoinette Delali Kemavor, one of the beauty queens, Inna Patty, the organizer of the pageant told her to be ‘sweet’ and ‘acceptable’ of anything a man they were seeking sponsorship from would demand of her.

First runner-up of the pageant in 2019 Sarah Odei Amoani, decided to resign due to such demands made of her.

Margaret Dery, Miss Ghana 2017 had earlier resigned too!

After taking to Twitter to describe Miss Ghana Beauty Pageant as a big SCAM, Miss Margaret Dery, the 2017 Winner of Miss Ghana Beauty Pageant finally resigned.

Miss Ghana 2010 – Stephanie Karikari, Miss Ghana 2015 – Antoinette Delali Kemavor, Miss Ghana 2013 – Giuseppina Nana Akua Baafi and first-runner-up – Margaret Kuma-Mintah – have all resigned after their participation in the pageant, most with sordid allegations against Inna Patty for trying to pimp them for money.

Miss Malaika which marked 20 years anniversary this year crowned Zakiya Ahmed as its Emerald Queen, becoming the first Hijab-wearing Queen in the history of the pageant.

Miss Malaika has succeeded where Miss Ghana failed, since at least 2004 — being scandal-free and fulfilling its unconditional promises to the Queens since 2002.

The Miss Malaika is produced by Charter House Productions and mostly airs on Ghana television station TV3, GhOne TV as well as DSTV channel Africa Magic. The pageant is produced as a 12- to 13-week reality show and is the first beauty pageant show to be aired as a reality series in Ghana before being joined by TV3’s own Ghana’s Most Beautiful, which is a region and strictly culturally based.

Most beauty pageant is now all about empowering young women to positively impact society as well as fulfil their aspirations.

From the conception of Miss Malaika show 2002, it has been presented to the audience as a reality TV show which allows for the viewers to vote for their favourite contestant to be crowned Miss Malaika Ghana.

Each week, the contestants are given tasks to perform which range from performances to organizing events. This is then assessed by a panel of judges who have a certain degree of power in selecting successful candidates and eliminating others.

The Miss Malaika pageant is open to single females between the ages of 18 or those who would turn 18 the present year and 26. Hopeful contestants need to be sizes 10 and 14 and must be of “African” origin. Other requirements are that the ladies are high school graduates, have no breast implants and no height restrictions.

However, the pageant has reviewed some of its requirements discounting body sizes and almost eliminated Bikini modeling requirements.

  • MzGee ‘bites’ Stonebwoy over ‘Pay to Play’ claim, calls GFA to take action

Media personality, Gloria Akpene Aquah, popularly known as ‘MzGee’, has asked the Ghana Football Association not to remain silent on some allegations levelled against them by Stonebwoy.

Earlier, After the Black Stars squad was named, Stonebwoy tweeted, insinuating that because of “pay to play” some more deserving players were left out of the squad.

“There are players who are supposed to be in the squad who are not here because of #PayToPlay. GFA why?” he earlier shared on Twitter.

Although Stonebwoy’s comments are, as yet, unproven, countless netizens sided with his claims while others lambasted him for raising such allegations.

But MzGee thinks that such accusations coming from a huge brand like Stonebwoy shouldn’t be overlooked.

“When I saw the tweet, my heart skipped because Stonebwoy isn’t a small brand. What he wrote wasn’t only spotted by Ghanaians. People all over the world saw it. Even if these accusations are true, can’t we talk about it at home and not make noise about it? Now you have exposed our GFA to the entire world. FIFA is watching. You have exposed us to a bigger community. There is no proof to what he is saying,” she stated during a discussion on United Showbiz.

Chastising the dancehall artiste for denigrating GFA’s brand, MzGee has asked Stonebwoy to furnish the public with evidence to support his claims or apologize.

“I remember an instance I made an inference on social media over someone’s commentary, the person’s lawyers wrote to me. I am waiting for GFA to respond to this. What do they have to say? Because they have been tagged. Once they don’t respond to this, then there is an iota of truth in this. Because a bigger brand with a huge following has said it, his followers can also say it. As for Stonebwoy, if he has no proof, then it is now time for him to come and tell us that he said it out of jest. Because you cannot denigrate someone’s brand in that manner when you don’t want your brand to be rubbished,” she added.

The ‘Menim’ hitmaker who is currently in Ghana for a church tour dubbed ‘Hava Extravagance’ and also to rekindle with her family, said she relocated to the US after she was invited to minister at a programme.

Even though she was quite famous in Ghana back then, she told the host that it didn’t come with lots of money.

“I have been in New York for 22 years. I went there to minister because I was invited. But a few things happened, and I decided to stay over. During the course, I got married and started having kids. I was also engaged in church a lot…Back then it was purely ministry; there were not enough returns from that,” she said in Twi.

Sharing her experience about her stay in New York, she emphasized that it was not easy, to begin with.

Getty explained that she didn’t allow the fame she had in Ghana to affect her; she did all sorts of jobs to survive because she was only looking at the future.

“22 years in America has been tough, educative, strong and I think it has been good…I have all my kids there, they are schooling there which is a great advantage. I have had to go through surgeries, and I tell myself I don’t know how I would have survived if I was here (Ghana).

“I had a mindset to start afresh in New York, so difficulties didn’t stop me. I didn’t mind doing any job to survive,” she narrated.

She reiterated that the journey to motherhood has not also been smooth, as she lost 2 babies to miscarriage.

“I had tough pregnancies; in all I had 2 miscarriages, CS and some other complications,” she said.

She is now in full-time ministry in New York and also does another job to support that.

The veteran artiste gave a background on how the group came about:

“Getty and Friends comprised of the back vocalists and the instrumentalists. We used ‘and Friends’ so that everyone would feel a part of the group. The second reason was that I was schooling at Korle Bu Nursing Training…I was in my early 20s during that time,” she explained.

  • Shatta Wale, Michy intimately aware they are incompatible – Wale’s father

Shatta Wale and Michy are very much aware that they are not compatible, says Shatta Capo.

He is the father of Ghanaian reggae/dancehall star and leader of the popular fanbase called Shatta Movement (SM).

On Thursday, 17 November 2022, Charles Nii Armah Mensah Senior, alias Shatta Capo, was hosted by Ohenewaa Kese Boahene (Gargantuan Lady), on the Obra Mu Nsem (Issues of Life) segment of the Dwabre Mu (Business Time) programme on Class Media Group’s CTV.

Discussing ‘Choosing a rightful partner’, he disclosed what he knew about the famed relationship between his son and his former fiancée.

He said as best as his memory would serve, he recalls his son’s relationship with Michy, formerly known as Shatta Michy, started in “2013 thereabouts.”

“I got to know Shatta Michy through Shatta Wale,” he added.

Michy “is a very lovely lady, no two ways about that,” he complimented the TV personality and noted, however, “She is different from Shatta.”

“God made all of us in his image, alright, but we have different traits in terms of character. We need to particularly note that. Whether you like it or not, your character is not like mine,” he posited.

“In the same vein, when you meet a woman, she also has a character different from yours. So, it’s important to study the person when you meet. [Get] to know who he or she is in terms of their identity. People usually don’t consider this,” he advised.

“Now, the problem between Shatta and Michy stemmed from this very thing I am talking about. They both got to know each other well and they know for a fact that they don’t click,” he firmly stated.

When his host exclaimed at his startling observation, he buttressed: “Although they lived together and I have a grandson between the two of them, Shatta being my child and Michy being, if you like, my daughter-in-law, they know they don’t click. There is no way they can say they do. Otherwise, all that happened wouldn’t have. So basically, that is what it is.”

Shatta Capo, with hand gestures and a gruffy voice reminiscent of his famed son’s, further explained that because of the incompatibility of his Shatta Wale and Michy, the relationship did not culminate where people had hoped it would.

“So, all those pleading that they get back together, [should understand] they know they don’t click,” he stressed. “Michy is aware, Shatta is aware.”

He agreed that “people love them together but the traits, in terms of character, doesn’t click, they don’t match.” He threw his hands up in dramatic emphasis.

  • Shatta Wale was conceived in the afternoon; reason he looks, behaves like me – Father

Charles Nii Armah Mensah Snr, alias Shatta Capo, the father of Ghanaian reggae/dancehall superstar Shatta Wale, has disclosed his son was conceived in the afternoon.

According to him, this accounts for the semblance between them with respect to looks and mannerism.

“I’ve said it before that, sometimes you think you’re casually impregnating a woman [but] pay attention to the time you initiate the conception,” he said to Ohenewaa Kese Boahene (Gargantuan Lady) on the Obra Mu Nsem segment of the Dwabre Mu programme on Class Media Group’s CTV Thursday, 17 November 2022.

“You can see Shatta [Wale] is a replica of me,” the award-winning artiste’s father said in parental pride. “Observe everything about him.”

He cited that: “Sometimes, when I go out, I don’t want to disclose my identity, but people still make me out saying, ‘This is Shatta Capo. Look, he speaks like his son’.”

In all honesty, “it was one bright and hot afternoon that I initiated my son’s conception leading to his birth,” he revealed.

“If you want your child to look and behave like you, schedule the conception for afternoon,” he asserted laughing in a textured voice reminiscent of his son’s.

Xandy Kamel has praised herself for how good she is looking even after a tempestuous marriage and divorce process.

While emphasizing that not everyone can maintain his or her sanity after divorce, Xandy said she has done a good job with herself.

Xandy Kamel’s 1-year-old marriage to Angel TV’s Kaninja crashed after a series of infidelity allegations leveled against the man, surfaced on the internet.

Social media witnessed a nasty fallout between the two as several back and forths from the former couple flooded the internet.

But casting her mind back on all that she went through, Xandy has patted herself on the back for still being able to maintain her sanity and good looks.

In an interview with Zionfelix, the popular actress said she intends to document her experiences into a TV show.

“I am planning on a show. My team and I are planning a show titled life after divorce. It’s not everyone that goes through divorce [and] bounces back even after a month. Not everyone that goes through divorce still stands and grinds. There are a lot of people that have gone through divorce and they have run mad. People are in a mess, [and] even what to eat becomes a problem. People go through divorce and even when you see them, you become sad. But divorce looks good on me. I can beat my chest and say that. I know I look good. I have my sanity, I am happy,” she stated.

  • Nigerian prophet launches petition to stop 50 Cent from producing Hushpuppi series

A Nigerian prophet, Samuel Effiong, has launched a change.org petition to stop American rapper Curtis James Jackson, aka 50 Cent, from producing a movie series based on the life of convicted fraudster Ramon Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi.

On the 7th of November, Hushpuppi was sentenced to over 11 years in a US Federal Prison for conspiring to launder tens of millions of dollars from online scams.

Shortly after his conviction, 50 Cent announced on Instagram that he was working on a movie series based on Hushpuppi’s story.

He wrote, “For my scammers, I gotta do this one. The Hushpuppi series is coming soon! GLG, Green Light Gang, I don’t miss.”

However, a week after, Prophet Effiong, in his petition, said that he was disappointed by 50 Cent’s recent announcement about the planned movie series.

According to him, the series will further damage Nigeria’s battered image and reinforce stereotypes.

“This proposed series will further tank Nigeria’s battered image as it will reinforce stereotypes about all Nigerians being scammers.

“Furthermore, this plan would not only make Hushpuppi rich, as he would have to be paid for rights, but it would also encourage and glamourise cybercrime,” the petition reads.

As of press time, the petition hosted on change.org was 64 signatures short of its target of 200 signatures.

If 50 Cent’s wish to do a movie on Hushpppi’s life materialises, it would be the second time he will tell a real-life crime story.

In 2019, 50 Cent announced that he had begun developing a television series revolving around The Black Mafia Family, a defunct drug trafficking and money laundering organisation in the United States.

It was titled Black Mafia Family (BMF); 50 Cent executive produced the series for cable network company Starz.

The series premiered in September 2021, and Demetrius Flenory Jr. plays his father, Demetrius “Meech” Flenory, the founder of the Black Mafia Family. The latter is currently serving time in a U.S. prison.

Hushpuppi was found guilty of laundering proceeds from a school financing scam, business email compromise fraud and other cyber schemes.

The 40-year-old was sentenced by United States District Judge Otis D. Wright II, who ordered him to pay $1,732,841 in restitution to two fraud victims.

Until his arrest in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, in June 2020, Hushpuppi flaunted his lifestyle on social media, primarily via his Instagram page, which was recently shut down. The US government said his opulent lifestyle was crime-funded.

In April 2021, he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering, a step that got him a reduction of what could have been 20 years’ imprisonment to about 11 years of jail time.

The trial court also ordered him to pay restitution in the total amount of about $1.7 million, which he had agreed to in his plea agreement in April 2021.

Popular Ghanaian socialite, Xandy Kamel, has disclosed that contrary to claims that her rich father left behind some properties, she hustles to make ends meet.

Dispelling claims that she is living a comfortable life, Xandy said it gets to a point where she has to beg for assistance in order to feed herself.

“I am not comfortable, I hustle. It gets to a point where I beg before I eat. It gets to a point, which means I still do that. Someone will think my father was rich and maybe he left me properties and all that but he didn’t leave behind the Bank of Ghana in our room. My father was a very strict person so we didn’t experience the life rich people usually experience,” she stated in an interview with Zionfelix.

Highlighting some of her struggles, Xandy Kamel said she wasn’t born with a silver spoon in her mouth adding that her late father attained the Member of Parliament position after so many years family of hardship.

“My father was a teacher when I was born. How much were they even taking at that time? My mother was also selling jewelleries but she stopped at a point and she started selling fish. She stopped and then started selling khebab. I assisted her in selling the khebab by roaming the streets and markets with it. I used to walk about three hours to school. For my late father’s riches or status, it was just recent and also short.”

Xandy Kamel’s late father, Henry Ford Kofi Kamel, was a Ghanaian politician who served as the Volta Regional Minister and the Member of Parliament of Buem constituency in 2004. He passed away on December 25, 2012.

Finance minister, Mr. Ken-Ofori-Atta’s resort to Biblical quotations each time he has a platform to speak about the country’s economy has been an issue of interest over the years.

These Bible verses or lyrics of gospel hymns pops up either at the beginning or halfway through Mr. Ofori-Atta’s submission and this has been captured particularly during budget reading in parliament several times.

The finance minister appeared before the eight-member Ad hoc committee intended to probe the allegations made by the Minority in Parliament per their motion of censure against him.

As expected, some lyrics of a popular Methodist hymn; “Land of our birth, we pledge to thee. Our love and toil in the years to be; When we are grown and take our place. As men and women with our race,” were captured in his speech.

    This drew the attention of some netizens on social media including outspoken journalist, Bridget Otoo who took to Twitter and wrote;

“Finally Methodist hymn, would have been surprised if he had not mentioned one hymn.”

One can recall that earlier in March 2022, Member of Parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu, John Jinapor, established that Mr. Ofori-Atta had done very little with economic management stressing that the biblical philosophies have not translated into infrastructural and developmental growth.

“I want to tell the finance minister that, managing this economy is not about quoting Bible verses or wearing white. Thank you very much for the Bible quotations but when you quote the Bible, you must follow that with actions, principles, programs, and projects,” the MP said during an E-Levy debate in parliament

  • Xandy Kamel exposes and curses woman who wrote hateful comment under her post

Ghanaian actress Xandy Kamel has lamented the unexplained hate directed at her by Ghanaians for all this year including some social media users bullying her at the slightest opportunity.

Xandy explained that constant bullying has led her to depression adding that it might lead to her death. In a recent interaction with fans, she couldn’t fathom why the masses dislike her.

“Ghanaians don’t love me. When a Nigerian loves you, it is genuine. They will wholeheartedly love you but that cannot be said of a Ghanaian. I don’t even have a fanbase. Critics go and attack me under pages created in my name. I will just die,” declared the actress.

Xandy and former wife of sports presenter, Kaninja, in the viral video also lashed out at a Ghanaian nurse who claimed to hate her.

The young woman whom Xandy identified as a nurse wrote that she hates the actress. This resulted in the actress’s decision to expose the face behind the page and also rain curses on her.

She prayed for the worst things in life to befall her critic and also wished evil in her life. According to the actress, she has come to terms with the hate a section of Ghanaians have for her but that could not stop her from clapping back at critics.

“Maamelov3, you say you hate me. Well noted, this is her face, she is a nurse. Funny enough you don’t even follow me on my page. You hate me?…I will show you where power lies. Just as a piece of charcoal is reduced to ashes after burning, so will your life be. You will experience a sudden downfall…you will suffer in life and will never know peace. Your family will come in search of me to save you. Your life will be as dark as charcoal, mark my words,” these were the words of Xandy Kamel after being subjected to cyberbullying.

  • Model testifies Harvey Weinstein ‘Tricked’ her into threesome, as defense questions why she repeatedly saw him after alleged rape

A Norwegian model took the stand in Harvey Weinstein’s trial on Wednesday and testified that the former movie mogul allegedly raped her, masturbated in front of her and propositioned her for a threesome.

The complex testimony spanned a series of events over a number of years. The alleged incidents occurred during industry events such as the BAFTA Awards, New York Fashion Week, the Cannes Film Festival and AFI Fest, as well as an audition for the musical film “Nine,” which was distributed by The Weinstein Company in 2009.

    More from Variety

Weinstein’s defense questioned the woman, known in the case as Natassia M., as to why she agreed to see Weinstein repeatedly after she alleges she was sexually assaulted. She spoke about the power imbalance between her and Weinstein, telling the jury she was concerned that if she didn’t keep up a friendly relationship with Weinstein, he would blacklist her from the biz.

Natassia M. was called by the prosecution to prove a pattern of conduct, as an uncharged witness in the case. (There are four Jane Does and four uncharged witnesses in the trial.)

“He was called ‘One Phone Call Away Harvey,’ meaning he could make you or break you. He was the most powerful person in Hollywood. He created stars,” Natassia M. said on the stand. “The asymmetrical power situation was so large, I felt like there was this powerful guy who could ruin my career, who had the destiny of people’s life in his hands.”

The first time Natassia M. encountered Weinstein, they had no interaction, but she noticed him staring at her across the room. It was 2002 and she was at the restaurant Cipriani in New York City with Naomi Campbell, with whom she was working on a modeling gig.

“He was sitting in a chair at a restaurant, staring at me, gazing at me for a very long time. He would not break his gaze, so I yelled in the restaurant, ‘Who the fuck is that fat fuck who is sliming me?’” she testified, then stating that Campbell said, “That’s Harvey Weinstein.” She said, “I yelled out, ‘I don’t give a fuck who it is. That guy is sliming me.’”

When Weinstein’s attorney, Mark Werksman, questioned Natassia M., he asked her, “‘Who is that fat fucking pig?’ Is that what beautiful models call overweight men?”

Natassia M. continued to chronicle her story. After that moment in 2002, she didn’t come across him again until the Cannes Film Festival in 2003 where she was with her friend, the actor Michelle Rodriguez, and they stayed in a hotel room arranged by Weinstein’s company, but had no actual interaction with him. After that, she saw Weinstein at NYFF in 2007 where she was making the press rounds, per her obligations as the face of a major modeling campaign. At NYFF, when she was at a fashion show for work, her publicist arranged for her to take a photo with Weinstein. She says when they took the photo, he was standing right next to his then-wife, Marchesa co-founder Georgina Chapman. “Mr. Weinstein’s first comments out of his mouth were, ‘Where are you staying and what’s your room number?’” Natassia M. says she was “flabbergasted” because she had never spoken to Weinstein before in her life.

The next time she saw Weinstein was soon after, at a BAFTA afterparty in London in 2008. The publicist for her modeling campaign arranged for her to once again take photos with Weinstein, thinking it would be good branding. They had a brief interaction at the industry event, took some photos and that was that. Until Weinstein suddenly barged into her hotel room in the middle of the night, unannounced. Natassia M. explained that she has no idea how Weinstein knew where she was staying, but she was woken up in the wee hours of the morning to Weinstein knocking loudly on her door and shouting his name to let her in. She was confused and opened the door. “He just stormed in,” she said.

“He said, ‘No one gets to be an A-lister unless it goes through me!’” she continued. “I just thought this guy is so powerful, I have no idea what to do in this situation and I completely froze … I was just so scared of this guy. He had so much power.”

Natassia M. said Weinstein told her to “think about all the Oscars” that celebrities have won and thanked him during their acceptance speeches. She told the jury she interpreted that as, “Everybody had to go through him — meaning, comply.”

That’s when Weinstein allegedly raped her. “He took off his pants and pushed me on the bed and climbed on top of me and I said to him, ‘I don’t do the casting couch thing.’” She shared graphic details with the jury, recalling, “It didn’t last that long because I had zero response because I just played dead. He got off me and finished off himself. He ejaculated into his hand … I did not fight him. I did not scream. I literally was frozen … I couldn’t think.”

Weinstein left her hotel room shortly after the alleged assault. When she woke up, she noticed a movie script on her nightstand for “Nine,” the theatrical musical that Weinstein produced in 2009. She assumed Weinstein left the script there for her to see.

She did not call the police to report the alleged incident in London “because if you’re an actress and you’re a problem, you don’t work,” she told the jury. “If you are difficult, that thing goes around Hollywood that this person is difficult.”

Natassia M. did not have any more contact with Weinstein in London, but when she was back in Los Angeles where she lived, she wanted to pursue to role in “Nine,” despite the alleged assault. “I wanted to make the best of this situation,” she said. “I thought I could avoid him, but I wanted to earn the part.”

Back in L.A., she signed up for singing and dancing lessons since “Nine” was a musical, and told the jury that she spent a lot of her money on the training because she was so committed to earning the part. She eventually got an audition, and when she showed up, she was stunned and “horrified” that Weinstein was there. “I couldn’t concentrate on my audition. I was thrown off,” she said. “He was sitting right there and I didn’t know he was going to be there.”

After the audition, Natassia M. sent an email with an MP3 recording of a singing demo to Weinstein and his staff. She explained that she paid herself to use a recording studio for the demo because she was taking the role so seriously. She said that Weinstein responded and instructed her not to send the demo tape to his office, and instead told her to meet his assistant at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. She agreed, thinking she’d meet the assistant in the lobby and would never see Weinstein. “I tried to give her the CD, and she said, ‘No, Mr. Weinstein wants you to follow me and talk about the movie.”

When she arrived to Weinstein’s room with his assistant, she gave Weinstein the demo tape and he chuckled and tossed it aside, she said. She suddenly realized that the assistant was gone. “He tricked me to coming into his hotel,” she testified. “All of a sudden, I’m in his hotel room.”

She then noticed another woman in the hotel room. “I can’t believe he has me in this fucking suite with a prostitute. And I was furious,” she said, then telling the jury that they propositioned her for a threesome. Natassia M. told the jury that she was upset and felt coerced, but she wanted the movie role, and thought she could manage the situation.

She thought, “I’ll just pretend I’m really innocent, and not do anything … And this prostitute, who I think is a prostitute, is like, ‘Oh she’s so shy,’ and her and Weinstein were laughing. And she gave him a blowjob.” (The judge blocked the prosecution from naming the woman who was allegedly with Weinstein in the hotel room, though she was also associated with another Jane Doe’s allegations, earlier in the trial.) Natassia M. agreed to participate by putting on a robe and watching Weinstein with the other woman, but told jurors she did not engage and put on an act.

“I was still trying to manage the situation because I really wanted to be able to do a quality movie,” Natassia M. explained. “He has you by the fucking throat, knowing that if you don’t comply that your career is down the drain … and that’s not right.”

After that alleged incident at the Peninsula in 2008, Natassia M. did not see Weinstein until a few years later when she said she randomly bumped into him at an Oscars party that she attended with her boyfriend at Soho House in L.A. When Weinstein saw her, he pulled her aside, she testified, and said, “I thought you were going to go to the tabloids.” She told Weinstein she would never “mess around with the most powerful guy in Hollywood,” and he said, “It pays to be my friend.” She thought, “Shit, I have to pretend to be his friend [and] then maybe, he will fix any damage that he’s done to my career.”

After that conversation, Natassia M. believed that Weinstein blacklisted her, so she told the jury that she figured it would be smart to stay in touch with Weinstein for career purposes. She ended up seeing Weinstein a few more times, mostly at her request, when she would contact him to ask for business meetings with her friends, as a favor. She made arrangements to meet with Weinstein at AFI Fest in Los Angeles with one of her producer friends, which she said resulted in Weinstein asking her back to the Montage hotel where she agreed to watch him shower. In New York City, she had set a meeting with Weinstein and her friend who wanted to discuss incorporating his celebrity connections for charity, and Natassia M. told the jury that the business dinner turned into Weinstein guiding her upstairs to his office and groping and masturbating in front of her.

During cross-examination, Weinsein’s defense showed an email where Natassia M. invited Weinstein to a 2011 Cannes Film Festival party where one of her friends was presenting a film. She wrote, “The film has Oscar written all over it” and signed the email, “Love you Harvey.”

Weinstein’s attorney continuously asked Natassia M. why she remained in contact with Weinstein, suggesting that she wanted to use his power for her own benefit. She said that she only wanted to help her friends, and never expected Weinstein to abuse her again and again. “Usually when people ask me to help them, I say, ‘Yes,’” she said. “But you’re asking for help from someone who raped you,” Weinstein’s attorney Werksman retorted.

“This is like the fourth time that you’ve followed along with some assistant against your will?” Werksman continued.

Natassia M. replied, “Against my inner wishes. And yes … when you’re meeting Mr. Weinstein, you hope things are going to get better.” Shifting to another alleged encounter, Werksman sarcastically asked, “Is there where you said, ‘I can’t believe you’ve gotten me in this situation for now the fifth time, so I’m outta here?’”

Trying to prove that Natassia M. knew what she was getting involved with when she saw Weinstein, his attorney looked at her on the stand and said, “You’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do to get ahead in Hollywood.”

Following the day in court, Gloria Allred, who represents Natassia M., issued a statement to Variety, applauding her client.

“She testified that she told Harvey Weinstein that she did not do ‘the casting couch,’ but despite telling him that, he raped her and engaged in other unwelcome sexual conduct with her,” Allred said, in part. “She was on the witness stand for most of the day, and underwent a rapid fire intense cross-examination by the defense. Despite the many attempts by Harvey Weinstein’s lawyers to discredit her and undermine her testimony, she stood her ground and told her truth. I was very proud of her and the courage that she demonstrated, as she testified in the criminal trial of People vs. Harvey Weinstein today.”

  • Full text: Ken Ofori-Atta’s responses to grounds from proponents on Parliamentary motion on censure

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta was in Parliament on Friday to answer questions from the Minority Caucus calling for his head as the keeper of the country’s purse.

Mr Ofori-Atta when he appeared before Parliament’s Ad-hoc Committee apologised to Ghanaians for the economic hardship, which he said has nothing to do with him being incompetent.

Below is the full text of his responses to the committee.

    Introduction

Hon. Co-Chairs and members of this Adhoc Committee, good morning and through you, good morning to the Ghanaian people. I believe this process we are engaged in here is a useful opportunity to strengthen our democratic processes.

    • Hon. Co-Chairs, during the course of my remarks this morning, you can expect forthrightness. The Proponents’ motion of censure has accused me of many things and includes some very disparaging remarks and attacks on my person and integrity. I am certain that Ghanaians will have a more balanced view of the events “that led us here’ as I take the opportunity to speak to the matters raised.
    • My principal reflections today are to ensure that by the end of these proceedings, the “truth” will have taken centre stage and, in the process, any unfounded doubts about my motives, my competence, and my character would have been dispelled.
    • Before I proceed with my detailed responses, I would like to make a personal comment to the Ghanaian people:
    • Since, the Akufo-Addo government came into office in 2017, everything we have sought to do was aimed at making the lives of the people better.
    • We have been focused on this vision to improve lives and in the first 4 years, our efforts were leading to a realisation of the vision.
    • Today, I acknowledge our economy is facing difficulties and the people of Ghana are enduring hardships. As the person, President Akufo-Addo has put in charge of the economy, I feel the pain personally, professionally and in my soul. I see and feel the terrible impact of rising prices of goods and services on the lives and livelihoods of ordinary Ghanaians. I feel the stress of running a business. But, it is the strength and perseverance of the Ghanaian people that inspire me and my colleagues in Government every morning, to press on. That is what gives me the strength to press on to find solutions and relief for Ghanaians to the myriad of problems that our country and the rest of the world are facing, especially, since March 2020.
    • Co-chairs, let me use this opportunity to say to the Ghanaian people what I believe, with courage, every Finance Minister around the world may wish to say to his people now: I am truly sorry. When we set out so purposefully between 2017 and the early parts of 2020, we never imagined that a global pandemic such as Covid, with its prolonged economic fallout, would inflict such pain and suffering upon the Ghanaian people. The shock to our system has been hard and the impact on our livelihoods severe. But, we have not been resting on our oars. We continue to work to keep the lights on, to avoid the queues at our filling stations, our classrooms full, our hospitals and dispensaries mostly stocked with medicines, continue to pay salaries and our roads being built and fixed.
    • Now, let me get into the details:

The ground of the Proponents claiming that there has been “Unconstitutional withdrawals from the Consolidated Fund in blatant contravention of Article 178 of the 1992 Constitution supposedly for the construction of the President’s Cathedral”, I submit as follows:

    1. Hon. Co-Chairs, let me first submit, that I am uncomfortable about the formulation of this ground. It presupposes that Parliament is assuming the jurisdiction to enforce and/interpret a provision of the Constitution, against the combined effect of articles 2(1) and 130(1), which grants the sole and exclusive power to the Supreme Court. Nonetheless, I say with both humility and confidence that I have not breached the Constitution in making payments to support the construction of the National Cathedral of Ghana.
    2. Hon. Co-Chairs, three days ago, when the Proponents were here, they alleged that I had made payments from the Contingency Fund to support the National Cathedral. I want to state that this is just not true. Let me be categorical. I have taken no money from the Contingency Fund to make payments for the National Cathedral.
    3. It appears the proponents have confused the Contingency Fund with the Contingency Vote. Let me explain. There is a difference between Contingency Fund and Contingency Vote.

The Contingency Fund, the Proponents refer to, is what is covered under the Constitution, specifically under article 177. This constitutes money voted by Parliament and advances from this must be authorised by the Parliamentary Finance Committee. The Contingency Vote, on the other hand, is a line under the “Other Government Obligations” vote which is approved by the Finance Committee and passed as part of the annual Appropriation Acts passed by Parliament.

    1. Hon. Co-Chairs, in preparing the Annual Budgets, the practice is that provision is made for indicative expenditures that have not been fully costed at the time of the Budget presentation. Provisions are made in the Contingency Vote to cater for such expenditures. For example, in 2014, there was no specific allocation in the 2014 budget for Ghana’s participation in the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The Cabinet of President John Mahama, in March 2014, at the time, approved some $9.622 million for that tournament, including that amount which was flown to Brazil in a private jet for the players. A more current example is Ghana’s participation in Qatar. The Black Stars qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, way after the 2022 budget, presented on 16 November 2021, was approved by Parliament. No specific amount was budgeted for it but through the Contingency Vote, we have been able to provide funds legitimately for the team to participate in the competition.
    2. Expenditures in respect of the National Cathedral were made from the Contingency Vote under the “Other Government Obligations” vote as has been the practice before my tenure (I have copies of several payments from the Contingency Vote dating back to 2015 to share). Hon. Co-Chairs, as Finance Minister, I am fully aware of the approval procedures for use of the Contingency Fund and have not breached its requirement.
    3. The National Cathedral is 100% owned by the State and is not the President’s Cathedral as described by the Proponents. Indeed, the Attorney General issued an opinion on 6th January 2022, that the National Cathedral is a state-owned company limited by guarantee, under the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board.
    4. Hon. Co-Chairs, the policy direction and updates on the National Cathedral have been publicly presented over the years through the National Budget Statement and Economic Policy presented to Parliament.
    5. In paragraph 156 of my Budget Speech on the 2019 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, I announced on the floor of Parliament, Government’s vision for the National Cathedral as well as the commitment to facilitate the construction by providing the land, the Secretariat, and seed money. This subject was part of the policy approval of the Budget after extensive debate.
    6. Subsequently, regular updates on the progress of the construction of the National Cathedral have been provided to Parliament and the nation. These include:
      1. 2020 Budget Statement and Economic Policy – Paragraph 385: which announced the establishment of the Board of Trustees and Secretariat for the Cathedral.
    7. Mid-Year Review of the 2020 Budget Statement – Paragraph 279: which provided an update on the ground-breaking ceremony held on 5th March 2020 to mark the formal commencement of the construction phase of the project.
    8. 2021 Budget Statement and Economic Policy – Paragraphs 1132 and 1134: which informed the House of the Letter of Intent (LoI) signed on 25th November 2020 between NCG Trustees and RIBADE JV (led by Rizzanni de Eccher with M Barbisotti & Sons and Desimone. And, the Appointment of Apostle Prof. Opoku-Onyinah as the new Chairman of the Board of Trustees on 8th February 2021.
    9. Mid-Year Review of the 2021 Budget Statement – Paragraphs 354 and 355: which announced the expansion of the Cathedral project to include a Bible Museum (Bible Museum of Africa – BMOA) and Biblical Garden; as well as

the establishment of the 100-Cedis-a-Month “Ketewa Biara Nsua” Club, in line with the original plan to encourage as many donors as possible to contribute towards the establishment of this national monument.

In conclusion, Co-Chairs, all the payments made for the National Cathedral were lawfully done and from the Contingency Vote under the “Other Government Obligations” vote and not from the Contingency Fund as alleged by the Proponents.

I now focus on the grounds claiming “Deliberate and dishonest misreporting of economic data to Parliament”.

    1. The issue of deliberate misreporting of economic data to Parliament is not just unfortunate but simply untrue.
    • I and, for that matter, the Ministry of Finance (MoF) have never misreported data to Parliament as has been alleged.
    • On Tuesday 13th November 2022, the Proponents clarified their concerns relating to the reporting of fiscal data.
    • In their submission, they alleged that different sets of data were presented to the IMF and the people of Ghana. That is untrue. The 2019 Article IV, which they cited, actually clearly demonstrates that the computing and Reporting of the deficit is

consistent between the Government and the IMF as shown on the Table labelled – Ghana: Selected Economic and Financial Indicators, 2017–24 on Page 4 of the IMF Article IV and appendix 3A of the 2019 budget. More importantly, we were under a Fund programme and could not have been able to exit if there were inaccuracies with the data we reported and the methodology used for computing the deficit.

    • In actual fact, in the most recent IMF Article IV Report from 2021, one sees clearly demonstrated that the methodology utilized in computing the deficit is and has been consistent as shown in the Table labelled – Ghana: Selected Economic and Financial Indicators, 2019–22 on Page 3 of the Press Release numbered PR21/221.
    • According to Hon. Ato Forson —“Mr Chairman, paragraph 16, page 11 of the Staff Report – article 4 says, fiscal rules under Ghana; Public Financial Management Act. Fiscal rules could be strengthened – Box one – it goes on to say that about 2.8 percentage point of GDP in financial and energy sector payment were recorded below the line in the year 2019 Budget because the Government considers the financial sector cost as a one off and energy cost, as debt amortisation. Best international practices would include these transactions above the line as they reflect either direct Government obligation or Government transactions, transfers to State-owned Enterprises.”
    • Because of the exceptional nature of the expenditure – financial sector cleanup and energy sector IPP payment, we agreed with The Fund that it could be treated below the line as shown in the Table earlier referred to. (Turning to the Presentation on the BoardIn fact, as can be seen in the presentation, the style is consistent. We both report with Finsec and without Finsec. All information is reported and none hidden).
    • Co-Chairs, it is also alleged that I have breached the second fiscal rule under the Fiscal Responsibility Act, 2018, (Act 982) namely the primary balance, in 2018 and 2019.
    • Firstly, I maintain the legal position that Act 982 was not passed to take a retrospective effect. It is equally instructive to note that the fiscal and primary balance targets presented to Parliament for those two years did not have any estimate on the finsec clean-up cost above-the-line. Consequently, the primary balance target that we were targeting were, actually, surpluses of 1.6% of GDP in the main budget for 2018 and 1.1% in 2019. This, per our definition, excluded the finsec clean-up cost. Thus, if applicable, could not be said to have breached the law. To reiterate, the agreed style of reporting with the IMF was to show both a deficit including finsec clean-up and one excluding it.

    I wish to state that:

    • The allegation of deliberate misreporting of economic data to Parliament is completely not true. Since I took office in 2017, I have served the country with integrity and honesty.
    • Under my leadership at the Ministry of Finance, there have been significant improvements in the accurate reporting of public finances. Today, under President Nana Akufo-Addo, Ghanaians are enjoying greater accountability and transparency in the management of the public purse than any other period under the Fourth Republic.
    • Since 2017, Government has complied with the reporting provisions in the Public Financial Management Act 2016 (Act 921), including Budget Implementation report, Fiscal Reports, Public Debt Report, Petroleum Revenue Management Reports, ESLA report, etc.
    • The Proponents have raised the issue of treatment of energy sector IPP payments and financial sector clean-up payments in the fiscal tables. The Ministry of Finance has explained its position on the treatment of these two items to the relevant Committees of Parliament during their scrutiny of the annual budget from 2018 to 2021. The Ministry of Finance actually

issued a Press Release on the subject on 10th May 2020, which we had hoped should have put this matter to rest.

    • The Ministry included the energy sector IPP payments in the “amortisation” line in the Fiscal Framework during the 2018-2021. Financial sector clean-up costs were included in the fiscal framework annually for the period 2018 to 2021 to reflect the issuance of bonds to cover the non-cash costs.
    • Contrary to the position of others that the MOF did not reflect the Finsec Payments and the energy sector IPP payments in the fiscal framework, I want to emphasize, with the Budget document as evidence, that these payments were reflected in the fiscal framework. Energy sector IPP payments were treated as “amortisation” and the non-cash financial sector clean-up payments were reflected in the “memo item” (Refer to Appendix 2A of the Fiscal Tables in the relevant Annual Budget).
    • The MoF reflected Finsec clean-up payments in the memo item called “fiscal deficit (including finsec payments)” for the following reasons:
      • They are extra-ordinary payment items which need not be mixed-up with traditional fiscal operations; and
      • They are largely bonds and capturing them above the line will imply recognizing their payments now and recognizing their payments again when the payments fall

due in the future – a possible double counting. A method that the proponent is or ought to have been very much familiar with from his years as Deputy Minister of Finance.

    • Likewise, the Energy sector IPP payments were reflected in the fiscal framework as part of the Amortisation line under the Financing part of the fiscal table for the following reasons:
      • They are debts of SOEs that have been assumed by Government and are largely contingent liabilities that have crystalised for payments; and
      • They are extraordinary, one-off payments which need not be mixed up with traditional expenditure items. Something, again, which the proponent should be very familiar with.
    • However, the MoF agreed with the Finance Committee of Parliament in 2021 that going forward from 2022 onwards, both the Energy IPP payments and the Finsec Payments will be treated “above the line” in the fiscal framework for the following reasons:
      • the Finsec bailout exercise is largely completed and, therefore, ceases to be an extraordinary budget item; and
      • IPPs payments are expected to be made over the medium-term. Given that they have become explicit contingent liabilities, appropriately budgeting for them “above the line” ensures that resources are duly allocated for their settlement.
    • The 2022 Budget, therefore, reflects this decision. Neither the Ministry, nor I have deliberately or dishonestly misreported economic data to Parliament.
    • This is buttressed by the submissions made in May 2020 by the IMF Country Director, Dr Albert Touna Mama: “Our number includes these two elements (financial sector payments and energy sector payment) and we know why the Governor of Bank of Ghana made the decision not to have these two elements in the fiscal deficits.”

There is also a claim on “Fiscal recklessness leading to the crash of the Ghana Cedi which is currently the worst performing currency in the world”, I will respond as follows:

    • Hon. Co-Chairs, the grounds of recklessness presuppose that I have not been guided by the laid-down regulations. I want to state that I have not been reckless in the management of the FISCAL Operations of Government. Rather, our strenuous efforts to protect the public purse is what has helped this government to have achieved much, much more than any government over a similar period in virtually all sectors, including education, health, social welfare, policing, security in general, roads, railways, agriculture, industrialisation, tourism, digitization, and funding for anti-corruption institutions.
    • Hon. Co-Chairs, I have come to Parliament House ten (10) times (eleven times since this Government) in the last 6 years to present the Annual and Mid-Year Budgets. On all occasions, I have discussed all proposed fiscal operations of Government (revenues, expenditures and financing).
    • On all those occasions, I received approval as Parliament subsequently passed Appropriations Bills for all those Budgets. Every key expenditure made has been supported by this House. Indeed, we all saw the dire consequences when the House, for months, refused to pass a major revenue generation item introduced by this Government to support the fiscal stability of the economy. Sadly, the Minority Leader, when this government was compelled to approach the Fund this year, triumphantly took credit for frustrating government’s efforts to meet its half-year revenue targets.

“He told the Parliamentary Press Corps last June that, “Thanks to the opposition Government has already lost half-year revenue. That can only be attributed to the purpose and tenacity of the Minority Group in Parliament.”

    • The consequences of this intentional stance have been dire. It precipitated a lack of confidence in the international market and closed access to Ghana’s traditional Eurobond issuance.
    • Hon. Co-Chairs, it is worthwhile to note that indeed, the Proponents offered only one item as not having been approved

by Parliament for Payment –The National Cathedral of Ghana, and I have shown that to be untrue.

    • I would hope we can take it that by extension of their proposition, they accept that all other expenditures have been approved by Parliament.
    • We must all boldly share in the positive achievements regularly reported by the Bank of Ghana in its quarterly ‘Fiscal Development Reports’ for the years 2017-2021.
    • Hon. Co-Chairs, it cannot be sustained that I have been reckless in supporting the implementation of the decisions of Parliament.

    Funding economic growth and transformation

    • Hon Co-Chairs, with the approval of funds by Parliament in the last 6 years, we have undertaken major transformative investments to improve the quality of life of Ghanaians:
      • We have mobilised and invested in excess of GH¢28.3 billion (as at Sept, 2022) to Implement transformative Flagship Programs that improve social mobility and the quality of life of Ghanaians; (most of these did not exist prior to 2017); this include:
    1. Supporting 1,765,977 Ghanaian students under Free SHS/TVET to promote human Capital Development and social mobility.
      1.   Enrolling 15,656,160 Ghanaians aged 15years and above on the National Identification Programme by Sept, 2021 to enhance security and economic efficiency.
      2. support about 100,000 Young graduates to enter the job market.
      3. Providing needed infrastructure to support decentralization and local governance to expand access to public services under the Regional Re- organisation programme.
      4. Promoting the development of railway network to advance national and regional connectivity
      5. Supporting the on-going construction of fishing harbours to service key coastal communities including Axim, Dixcove, Moree, Mumford, Winneba, Senya Bereku, Gomoa Feteh,Teshie and James Town.
      6. Increasing School Feeding beneficiaries from 1,677,322 in 2016 to 3,300,000 pupils in 2021.
      7. Increasing LEAP beneficiaries from 195,860 households in 2017 to 344,023 in 2021 to improve the livelihoods of for the underprivileged in our society.
    1. Increasing food production and security through Planting for Food and Jobs. It has led to a 71% increase in the national production of maize and 34% in paddy rice.
      1. We have invested significantly in retooling the security sector to maintain territorial integrity and improve internal security (CCTV, motor bicycles, vehicles, Forward Operating Bases, recruitment of security personnel etc);
    2. We have recruited over 200,000 Ghanaians into crucial service areas such as Education, Health, Security and Local Government; and
    3. Established a Tree Crop Development Authority with a focus on mango, cashew, rubber, oil palm, shea and coconut, in order to diversify our economy and provide raw materials for industrialisation.
    • These and many more we have done.

On the issue of fiscal recklessness and depreciating cedi

    • Hon. Co-Chairs, the idea that the depreciation of the Cedi is the result of fiscal recklessness is not supported by the available facts.
    • The Ghana Cedi consistently performed very well throughout my tenure as Finance Minister, up until March 2022. The records show that between 2012 and 2016, the Cedi depreciated by an average of 17% whilst between 2017 and 2021, the average rate of depreciation was 7%.
    • The major contributors to the currency problem are not necessarily fiscal factors Hon. Co-Chairs, unlike July 2014 when the Cedi was last rated as the world’s worst performing currency, the 2022 depreciation is largely attributed to extraordinary global factors including the strengthening of the US Dollar (even against major international currencies like the UK Pound and the Euro); and speculation due to economic uncertainties. For example, in this year, 2022, the Euro is worth less than the dollar for the first time in 20 years.
    • As stipulated in Article 183 of the Constitution, Section 2(a). The Bank of Ghana shall promote and maintain the stability of the currency of Ghana and direct and regulate the currency system in the interest of the economic progress of Ghana. As such, the Bank of Ghana, which manages our reserves is leading the interventions to contain the depreciation of the Cedi.
    • Government, on its part, is undertaking real sector interventions through initiatives such as 1D1F and the Ghana

CARES programme, to accelerate the import substitution of products such as poultry and rice, and promote an export led economy thereby reducing foreign exchange pressures from the imports of those products.

    • We intend to announce additional measures to promote the consumption of local produce. Furthermore, the implementation of the AfCFTA positions Ghana as a continental trade hub, and we shall take advantage and boost the export orientation of our industries.
    • The Ministry of Finance has also arranged significant financing including the US$750 million from Afrexim Bank to support the 2022 Budget and boost our foreign exchange reserves. This forex inflow has improved the supply of foreign currency and boosted the stability of the local currency. We continue to explore avenues to secure additional financing to boost the reserve position.

On the issue of “Alarming incompetence and frightening ineptitude resulting in the collapse of the Ghanaian economy and an excruciating cost of living crisis” I state as follows:

    • Hon Co-Chairs, these are very strong language. The choice of words for this part of the motion is worrying, especially as it relates to the functioning of the whole national economy. The truth is, considerable progress has been made under my tenure

as Minister for Finance. Since 2017, we have competently managed the economy.

    • Hon. Co-Chairs, we have competently managed the economy since 2017. Indeed, to appreciate where we are now, we need to look back at where we came from. At the close of 2016, an assessment of the Economy revealed:
      • limited fiscal space (fiscal deficit 6.5%);
      • a distressed financial sector (NPL ratio-17.3%);
      • an asset quality review document which had not been released;
      • a derailed IMF-ECF programme and reduced economic output (GDP growth-3.4%);
      • Inflation was 15.4% at the end of 2016;
      • Monetary Policy rate (interest rate) was 25.5% at the end of December 2016;
      • Limited CAPEX to MDAs; and
      • ‘Dumsor’ which had decimated local industry and strongly impeded national productivity.
    • Hon. Co-Chairs, it is important to note that through our leadership and commitment to turn around the economy from its state in 2016, we made great strides and remarkable progress in the years before the pandemic and the records attest to this.
    • The headline facts are:
      • We doubled economic growth in our first three years, and Ghana’s growth in 2019 was touted as one of the highest globally;
      • Inflation came down significantly from 15.4% to 7.9% at the end of 2019 and remained in single digits till the pandemic hit in March 2020;
      • The fiscal deficit which was about 6.5% was brought down to under 5 percent by the end of 2019;
      • Exchange rate depreciation reduced significantly to under [5 percent] in 2017 and averaging [8.7 percent} between 2017 and 2019;
      • We reduced interest rates in line with declining inflation expectations. Monetary Policy Rate declined from 25.5% at the end of December 2016 to 16% at the end of 2019 while the average lending rate for the same period declined from 31.70% to 23.7%;
      • The government directly spent GH¢25 billion to save the banking and SDI sector, protecting the near collapse of the financial sector; saving close to 5,400 direct jobs and 12,000 indirect jobs; making sure 4.6 million depositors were protected; and
      •   Government also implemented comprehensive reforms across the energy sector and kept the lights on to-date.
    • On the back of good economic management, in April 2019, Ghana successfully completed and exited the IMF-ECF programme that we inherited. To ensure irreversibility of the macroeconomic gains, Government introduced a number of measures including:
      •   passage of the Fiscal Responsibility Act, 2018 (Act 982) to cap the fiscal deficit at 5% of GDP and ensure maintenance of positive primary balance;
      •   passage of the Public Financial Management Regulations, 2019 (LI 2378) to strengthen regulation of the Public Financial Management System; and
      • establishment of the two Social Partnership Programmes with Labour and Faith-Based Organisations.
    • Clearly, there was strong momentum and optimism towards Ghana Beyond Aid agenda at the end of 2019.
    • However, with the onset of the pandemic, the gains from over three years of fiscal rectitude were reversed as result of efforts to ensure lives and livelihoods were protected.
    • Ultimately, these considerations informed the raft of revenue and expenditure measures outlined in the 2022 Budget Statement.
    • We laid out the 2022 Budget to achieve Fiscal Consolidation anchored on debt sustainability. It is important at this point, to also highlight that a key component of the national debt stock related to three (3) exceptional expenditure items that are neither external nor a creation of this Government:
      • Energy Sector Excess Capacity payments (GHC 17 billion), which relate to a legacy of take or pay contracts that saddled the country’s economy with annual excess capacity charges of close to US$1 billion;
      • Direct COVID-19 expenditure amounted to GHC 12.0 billion; and
      • the Banking Sector Clean up (GHC 25 billion).
    • These three items alone, contribute to about 23% of our annual debt servicing cost. These three items were not created through the recklessness of the New Patriotic Party. The long dumsor that Ghanaians endured under the NDC administration between 2012 and 2016 was more to do with the NDC government’s inability to pay for power. So, Co-Chairs, I find it curious that Hon. Ato Forson will choose to cite energy bills as an example of the recklessness that the Minority charges me with and seek my removal by censure. Especially when we have had to pay around

$500 million dollars a year in excess capacity charges, for power the previous administration negotiated that we do not need and we do not use.

    • Hon Co-Chairs, in actual fact, we have been able to renegotiate some of these power purchase agreements and the new agreements with the Priority IPPs, once finalized and executed will offer estimated nominal savings of more than USD 4 billion over the next 5 years.
    • We have also used a significant part of the borrowing to undertake key transformative investments such as:
      • The fixing constructing of over eleven thousand, five hundred (11,500) kilometres of new roads between 2017 and 2021;
      • The construction of 12 major interchanges since 2017 as compared to 5 interchanges in the previous 8 years.
      • the construction of the Eastern Regional and Central Gonja Hospitals;
      • Commencing work on eighty-seven (87) of the Agenda 111 projects;
      • funding on-going airport projects, including the Kumasi International Airport; and
      • promoting the establishment of the Development Bank Ghana to provide competitive finance for Ghanaian Entrepreneurs.
    • Indeed, the E-Levy was borne out of this heightened need to mobilize resources sufficient for managing the pre-eminent

challenges of our time: fiscal consolidation, debt sustainability, and reducing youth unemployment.

    • Unfortunately, the delay in the passage of the E-levy adversely impacted market confidence and largely contributed to the downgrade in Ghana’s sovereign credit ratings in January 2022 and these resulted to a whole deterioration of the financial conditions for Ghana and closed Ghana’s access to the international capital markets (ICM) due to Deteriorated perception and loss of confidence by investors.
    • For this reason, access to ICM funds was no longer available which resulted in a severe BOP problem that needs to be addressed.
    • The Government thus resorted to the IMF as a lender of last resort to not only address the immediate and active BOP need but also to protect all the macro and social policy gains made in the last 5 years.
    • Undoubtedly, the last few months have seen considerable economic uncertainty and challenges. These have been characterized by high of inflation levels and rapid depreciation of the cedi. Indeed, the economic challenges we are facing require deliberate but urgent, well thought out, strategic steps as well as the support of the Ghanaian people.
    • The above notwithstanding, there are still some bright spots.
    • Overall, our growth outturn of 3.4% and 4.8% in Q1 and Q2 2022 respectively, coupled with modest improvements in our fiscal position suggests our economy is gradually on the upswing despite the numerous shocks we have faced over the past two years.
    • This progress gives us a solid foundation to confront the challenges in front of us.
    • Undoubtedly, risks remain that we are highly attuned to; however, the Ministry of Finance is committed to working alongside all stakeholders, including the members of Parliament to ensure we can reposition our economy back on a path of growth and prosperity.

There is a claim of “Gross mismanagement of the Ghanaian economy, which has occasioned untold and unprecedented hardship”. I want to re-state that:

    • Hon Co-Chairs, the current economic challenges we are experiencing in Ghana is not the outcome of mismanagement. But we acknowledge the hardships our people are going through in these difficult times.
    • This assessment is wholly shared by objective observers. In the recent words of the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva and I quote: to the people of Ghana, like everybody else on this planet, you have been hurt by exogenous shocks. First the Pandemic, then Russia’s War in Ukraine and what we need to realise is not because of bad policies in the country but because of these combination of shocks…”
    • I have already discussed the domestic triggers behind the depreciating Cedi. We simply cannot overlook the significant impact of the delayed passage of the revenue measures outlined in the 2022 Budget, which resulted in negative market reactions, credit rating downgrades, the narrowing of financing sources, and the eventual depreciation of the cedi. The timelines are obvious and cannot be ignored.

    Going forward

    • Hon. Co-Chairs, it is time to have an honest national conversation on the patterns of expenditure as a people. Our preference for imported goods, which requires foreign exchange that we do not earn enough of, implies that our cedi will continue to be under pressure
    • It has become clear that we cannot continue in a business-as-usual mode. We have to significantly change our consumption

patterns and support investments in local capacity for production and export.

    • Hon. Co-Chairs, even in these challenging times, we have not been rudderless. We have prepared the Post-COVID-19 Programme for Economic Growth (PC-PEG) as the domestic blueprint, which has benefitted from input from all key stakeholders including Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), social partners (labour unions, employers, and FBOs), academia, industry professionals, and the leadership of Parliament.
    • This document contains a set of time-bound structural reforms and fiscal consolidation measures to place our debt levels and fiscal accounts on a sustainable path over the medium term and has underpinned Government’s engagement with the IMF.
    • The negotiation with the IMF is progressing steadily and well and we are working assiduously to achieve a Staff-Level Agreement (SLA) by end of December 2022.
    • As the President announced recently, Government is aggressively pursuing initiatives that will structurally boost the export orientation of this economy. In the coming 2023 Budget, and following consultations with key stakeholders, including AGI, Labour and the trading community, we expect to announce critical measures in this regard. This will complement that on-

going private sector-led interventions being promoted under the 1D1F and the GhanaCARES programme.

    • However, the world had no playbook to help us tackle the Covid-19 pandemic. Parts of the Ghanaian economy were shut- down, including hotels, restaurants, and events. Our efforts were further destabilised by the disturbances in the global supply chain. But even in those times, we provided electricity and water-free, grants and loans to businesses in the formal and in formal sectors. We also paid our workers even when some were home for 9 months and did not lay off anyone.
    • No country has been saved from the disruptions in supply chains, and record hikes in prices of energy, food and commodities. Every economy is facing macro-fiscal challenges, rises in public debt levels and narrowing fiscal space. Our situation was not helped by a combination of historic weaknesses in the structure of our import-dependent economy and our low capacity, even as compared to our neighbours, in raising domestic revenues. The 2023 Budget will contain policies directly aimed at tackling these vulnerabilities.
    • Hon. Co-Chairs, I am aware of the enormity of the challenges we face. I am aware that lives and livelihoods needs to be protected. We have a well-consulted plan and the commitment to address this economic challenge. The Ministry of Finance and I

have been working so hard 24/7 to quickly restore market confidence and ensure economic growth. We are nearly through with the IMF negotiations. I am confident that once we conclude our debt sustainability programme and secure a Fund programme, the nation will next year see the stability and fiscal space that can spur us back on to a sustainable economic recovery and growth, which should endure considering on the investments we have made in all sectors.

    Concluding remarks

    • Co-Chairs, as a child, I was taught a hymn that has guided me throughout my life:

Land of our birth, we pledge to thee our love and toil in the years to be,

when we are grown and take our place as men and women with our race.

    Land of our birth, our faith, our pride, for whose dear sake our fathers died;

O Motherland, we pledge to thee head, heart and hand through the years to be.

    • Inspired by the words of this hymn, Hon. Co-Chairs, when I assumed the position of Minister of Finance, I resolved to serve the people of Ghana with my all.
    • Under my tenure as Minister of Finance, I have overseen some great strides in the development of Ghana and the improvement of the lives of the Ghanaian people.
    • As a nation, we are being tested. Our circumstances require a united and concerted response to the crisis. I implore our chiefs, elders and churches to take the mantle and speak a common language. Let us all work as one country to support labour negotiations, find a solution to the impasse in Parliament and rise above witch-hunting and entrapment. These are not ennobling and progressive for a society seeking transformation.
    • Hon Co-Chairs, Ghana is a resilient country. Ghana has faced economic challenges since independence. Ghana has always come through each of them stronger and better than before. God willing, we shall come out of these difficult times too. Ghana, will, and must rise again!!

    Thank you, co-chairs. God bless

  • When I came to Lynx Entertainment, I’d nothing- Kuame Eugene shares grass to grace story

Kuami Eugene has shared his grass-to-grace story in a recent interview while revealing that being frugal with his finances had helped him cater for the members of his extended family.

According to the 2020 VGMA Ariste of the Year, wearing designer clothes is not something he subscribes to because he channels those expenses to buy things for his famil

According to the 2020 VGMA Ariste of the Year, wearing designer clothes is not something he subscribes to because he channels those expenses to buy things for his family.

The singer who is one of the most sought artistes in Ghana and Africa, admitted that he was hurt when people made fun of him for his sense of fashion in a message he shared on Twitter Space with Sincerely Accra Podcast on November 17.

According to him, because he wanted to construct his mother a house and provide for his family, who he said were not wealthy, Kuami Eugene indicated that he had to set spending limits.

“When I came to Lynx Entertainment, trust me, I actually had nothing. My parents didn’t have money and you can’t compare me to some artiste I came with because they were living in their parent’s house. My mum, my dad, my siblings, and myself were living in a rented apartment. It wasn’t okay for all of us.

“The time everybody was talking about my shoes and dress, trust me, I was trying to put things together. The things these other artistes had to go to the boutique to put together, I had to go to Kantamanto… so you can’t compare the two of us. People will say these things without knowing my pocket,” Eugene disclosed.

The Lynx Entertainment signee, who recently released the song “Single,” talked out about the sacrifices he had to make in order to avoid being ridiculed for dressing in “cheap” clothes that weren’t appropriate for his status as one of Ghana’s top musicians.

He added that his aim was to change his family’s story and get them a better life and looking back today, there are no regrets as his mum is in a better state.

“The first thing I was thinking of was to find a good place for my mum to stay…I wasn’t thinking of what to wear but how to fix my mum’s life because the English I am speaking today is because she put me through good education. I had to find somewhere better for her to stay before thinking of putting on a Louis Vuitton or a nice t-shirt that will cost like GH200. It was too much for me back then,” said Kuami Eugene.

  • New born baby dumped in an Atasemanso refuse dump

Residents of Atasemanso, a suburb of Kumasi have been thrown into a state of shock following the discovery of a newborn baby abandoned by its mother on a heap of refuse in the community.

The baby boy believed to have been delivered the same day was found wrapped in a cloth and placed in a black polythene bag.

The lifeless fair-looking baby was discovered by the refuse attendant in the area in the late hours of Thursday.

A resident, who was shocked at the beautiful looking baby, was seen heaping curses on the faceless mother who might have perpetrated the act.

It was all wails and utter disquiet as residents of Atasemanso watched in dismay the lifeless baby lying in the midst of plastics and other waste materials.

The day-old baby was found with a portion of its umbilical cord still attached to the navel and wrapped in a blood-stained white cloth.

Refuse attendants were on their usual morning routine of sorting out waste when one of them hit their foot against a polythene bag, later found to contain the remains of the unidentified baby.

“I went into the container myself and opened the polythene bag and I realized it was a fresh baby. Definitely, it was either the unknown mother who gave birth this morning or in the middle of the night. Looking at the position of the container, it was placed at the back of the bin,” one of the refuse attendants said.

According to the residents, it is the first of such happenings in the community.

“Since my eighteen years of staying in this community, I haven’t heard or seen anything of this kind here. This is my first time,” one of the residents at the scene said.

The refuse attendant explained his predecessor has been finding aborted foetuses in the bin.

“The guy who used to look after the bin used to discover aborted foetuses, some of whom were about 2 months old,” he said.

The remains of the baby have since been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital morgue. Investigations are currently underway by the Police.

  • I’m saddened by the actions of the 98 anti-Ofori-Atta NPP MPs – Mireku Duker

Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, George Mireku Duker, has bemoaned the actions of his colleague New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) who are calling for the head of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

Speaking in an interview on Peace FM’s Kokorokoo morning show on Friday, which was monitored by GhanaWeb, Mireku Duker said that the actions and pronouncements of the anti-Ofori-Atta NPP MPs will certainly do some damage to the image of the party.

The deputy lands minister, who is also the MP for Tarkwa Nsuaem, added that some of the things being said by the 98 NPP MPs could have been addressed by the party internally.

“… when it happens that your party and your government cannot resolve issues internally but must resort to making public pronouncements it is not the best. Sometimes we have to put ourselves in other people’s shoes. If I were the president and MPs from my own party are berating me in public while I have not broken any law, I will be offended.

“That is the pain I feel. I don’t think all ministers of past governments have been 100 percent perfect. I don’t think MPs of any of these governments come together to force their president to sack their ministers. I don’t think so, it has never happened before.

“Not all NDC (National Democratic Congress) MPs were happy with Seth Terkper but they never organised to seek for his removal by the president,” he said in Twi.

Meanwhile, the number of NPP MPs calling for the sacking of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has increased to 98 from the initial 80.

The 80 MPs had earlier made calls for the dismissal of Ken Ofori-Atta and the Minister of State for Finance, Charles Adu Boahen.

The MPs later backed down following a meeting with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who asked that the minister be given time to conclude Ghana’s ongoing negotiations with the International Monetary Fund as well as the presentation of the 2023 budget in parliament.

But speaking in an interview with JoyNews, the spokesperson of the 80 MPs, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has stated that the group is back to their initial demand for the removal of the finance minister.

According to the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, their renewed demand with the support of 18 other members of their caucus is because the minister’s position is now untenable.

He added that the anti-Ofori-Atta MPs will boycott the budget presentation if he is allowed to come to parliament to present the budget.

  • My househelp was the backing vocalist for my new song – Kuami Eugene shares details

Kuami (Rockstar) Eugene has surprisingly revealed that his househelp with whom he has developed a special rapport lent her voice to his new single, ‘Single.’

The A-list star had previously revealed that he composed that song based on a personal experience after suggesting ‘broken heart’ in a previous relationship.

    Speaking on Hitz FM about the surprise collabo with Mary, his domestic help, Kuami Eugene is the backing vocalist for the potential banger. He stated;

“I have to thank God for this year. I was in a toxic relationship, and it wasn’t cool for me. I had to leave. The song is moving really quickly because everyone has been in that situation before. My house help Mary recorded the backing vocals on my new single.”

In 2016, Kuami Eugene participated in season 5 of the reality competition program MTN Hitmaker, where he placed third overall. Soon after, Lynx Entertainment signed him, and he has since released a number of singles.

The highest views on YouTube for a music artist on that label in 2017 came from Angela, whose song Angela was listed as one of Ghana’s top 10 songs.

He is a featured musician on DJ Vyrusky and Shatta Wale’s song Adwenfi. He released Confusion in 2018 as a follow-up to the narrative in the song Angela.

Additionally, in response to the critical remarks he had been receiving on social media, he released the song Wish Me Well in June 2018.

Presently, he is one of the best artistes in Ghana and Africa with numerous awards and hit songs to his credit.

  • I’ve been to court 70 times because my party folks leaked a private discussion to NPP – NDC National Chairman

The Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, says elements within his own party are behind his leaked audio tape, based on which he is currently standing trial.

Speaking in a yet-to-air exclusive interview on Adom TV, the embattled Chairman told host, Daakyehene Nana Yaw Asante, that the leaked audio is an evidence of how cruel the NDC can be when they want to destroy one of their own.

Substantiating his claims, he said the in-house traitors secretly recorded his comments in a closed door meeting and leaked the recording to the New Patriotic Party for him to be prosecuted.

According to him, he has been to court on seventy separate occasions as a result of the internally orchestrated treachery.

“When NDC wants to disgrace you, they first tag you as anti-Mahama. My own party folks recorded me at a meeting that I held with the party, with the people and went to sell the recording to the NPP, for which reason I’m standing trial. I’ve been to court 70 times”, he stated in a trailer to the yet to air interview.

In addition to tagging an individual as anti-Mahama, he said some elements within the party can travel all length to cause disaffection for someone they do not like.

The interview will be aired on Saturday, November 19 at 10:00pm on Adom TV’s weekend current affairs programme, Sɛdea Ɛteɛ Nie.

Meanwhile, ahead of the airing of the interview, some supporters of the NDC have expressed disgust over the comments of the party’s National Chairman.

According to his critics, his sentiments are unnecessary, as they will wreak more havoc for himself and the party at large.

Others have however sympathized with him, and expressed solidarity with the alleged treachery he was subjected to.

In their view, the revelations by the NDC Chairman is understandably from a place of pain, and therefore he should not be chastised.

Currently, Mr. Ofosu Ampofo’s role as the NDC’s National Chairman is also being threatened by the decision of the party’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia to unseat him.

In what has been described as the main contest in the party’s upcoming national delegates election, Mr. Asiedu Nketia is frantically taking steps to take control of the party as National Chairman ahead of the 2024 general election.

Touching on this development, Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo stated in the yet-to-air interview that, the move by Asiedu Nketia to unseat him is politically inexpedient.

According to him, notable personalities within the party, including the party’s Council of Elders and the NDC’s 2020 flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, all made efforts to prevent the contest, but to no avail.

The upcoming national delegates conference will however take place on 10th December, 2022, in the Ashanti Regional capital of Kumasi.

Eligible party delegates will elect a new crop of executives to man the affairs of the party at the national level for the next four years.

  • America’s Got Talent and Ellen Fan Favorite Roslyn Singleton Dead at 39 of Brain Cancer

Roslyn Singleton, who appeared on America’s Got Talent and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, has died. She was 39.

Singleton died on Tuesday after several rounds of treatment for brain cancer, her husband Ray confirmed in an Instagram post.

“WELL DONE!! Our wife earned her wings yesterday while peacefully sleeping right at home where she wanted to be,” he wrote. “This road ahead is going to be INCREDIBLY long & difficult!”

He continued, “She taught us all SOMETHING…She’s where we’re all trying to get one day so no need to be sad! Now we celebrate her legacy, her impact, her story & HER SPIRIT! She will LIVE FOREVER!! #LongLiveRos”

Former Real Housewives of Atlanta star Cynthia Bailey shared her condolences in the comment section, writing, “heart broken. she will be missed. she was a force. blessed to have spent time with your queen. l❤️🙏🏽❤️”

In 2020, the couple visited The Ellen DeGeneres Show after a video went viral in which Ray serenaded Roslyn before she underwent surgery for brain cancer.

During the appearance, Roslyn revealed that she had been undergoing cancer treatments since 2013 and had been in remission until she was diagnosed with another tumor.

Ray later went on to become a contestant on AGT, with Roslyn joining him on stage. She told the judges that she had “been crying since he started” the emotional performance.

Roslyn, who was a Navy veteran, opened up about her cancer diagnosis in an interview with Novant Health earlier this year.

“Whenever there’s something going on in my life, God always puts the right people just right in front of me to make it a little easier,” she explained.

She added, “I know what God can do. My constant statement to him is: ‘Prove them wrong, prove them wrong.’”

The pair had been documenting Roslyn’s cancer journey on social media — earlier this week, Ray shared an audio clip of his wife sharing her message to the world. He captioned the clip, “WE LOVE YALL WITH OUR WHOLE HEART…Still guarding the MIRACLE.”

  • Harvey Weinstein Now Facing Fewer Counts of Rape as Judge Drops Four Charges

Harvey Weinstein will face fewer charges in his current Los Angeles trial with the prosecution announcing that they are not proceeding with a key victim, Jane Doe #5.

Weinstein now faces seven counts that stem from four women, rather than five Jane Does. Initially, he was facing 11 charges and maximum of 140 years in prison, if convicted. Now, the new maximum exposure is 60 years to life plus five.

The charges being dropped are a win for Weinstein, particularly because two of the dismissed charges were counts of rape, which carry the most years — with all five victims involved in the case, he would have faced four rape charges, but now faces two. The remaining counts that Weinstein now faces in the case are two charges of rape and five counts of sexual assault.

Jane Doe #5 was associated to four charges in total (charges 8-11) two of which were counts of forcible rape. The other two charges in the indictment were both counts of forcible oral copulation.

No reason was given for the change, but the move had been expected since the beginning of the trial when the prosecution inexplicably did not mention Jane Doe #5 in their opening statements. Since then, prosecutors had left open the possibility of her testifying, but confirmed on Tuesday that Jane Doe #5 will not testify.

“The defense made a motion to dismiss the charges, and the prosecution could not proceed,” deputy D.A. Marlene Martinez, one of the prosecutors on the case, told Variety in the courthouse hallway on Tuesday, declining to provide any further details.

After Jane Doe #5 was left out of opening statement, the D.A.’s office provided a brief statement to Variety, stating: “While we have no comment at this time, our office is tirelessly ensuring all of the victims in this case receive justice.”

Variety has reached out to attorney Gloria Allred, who was representing Jane Doe #5 in the case. Allred declined to comment.

Today, the final charged witness — Jane Doe #4, Jennifer Siebel Newsom — continues on the stand. The wife of California Gov. Gavin Newsom is an actor and filmmaker who alleges that Weinstein raped and sexually assaulted her in 2005 when she was up-and-coming in the entertainment business.

  • Brother stabs sister to death at Atwima-Twedie

A 55-year-old man has allegedly stabbed his younger sister to death at Atwima Twedie in the Atwima Kwanwoma District of the Ashanti Region.

The suspect, Osei Kwawu, reportedly stabbed her sister about ten times after the deceased, Akua Akyiaa, 50, declined a request by his brother to give him a ride in her car.

Speaking to OTEC News Kwame Agyenim Boateng, Mr. Kwame Owusu Adomako, an uncle to both the suspect and the deceased said the sad incident occurred on Wednesday, November 16, 2022.

“I met them for a short meeting after the two had some misunderstanding on that faithful day, my nephew Osei Kwaku was furious after her sister declined to take him to the hospital for a review in her car”.

“After resolving the matter, the two went to the house of the deceased where the incident occurred”

“I was told the suspect went straight to the kitchen for a knife and immediately pounced on her little sister and begun to stab her indiscriminately”

The suspect however was arrested by police immediately after the act and will be sent to court.

  • ‘Emancipation’ director says film’s release ‘is bigger’ than Will Smith’s Oscars slap

Will Smith’s new film Emancipation hits theaters in two weeks, which for a star of his caliber, typically means he would be on an all-out press blitz right now ahead of awards season. Obviously, the media rollout is a bit more complicated given the fact Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars months ago and is banned from Academy events for a decade. Emancipation director Antoine Fuqua spoke to Vanity Fair and said this movie is more important than the drama surrounding its star.

“The film to me is bigger than that moment. Four hundred years of slavery is bigger than one moment. My hope is that people will see it that way and watch the movie and be swept away with the great performance by Will and all the real hard work that the whole crew did,” Fuqua shared. (Watch the latest trailer for the film, which was released in the wake of Fuqua’s interview, below.)

However, Fuqua was stunned by the Oscars incident after spending two years with Smith making the Civil War drama.

“I haven’t met a nicer human being. I’m being honest about it. He was kind to everyone on the set. Will would go around and hug and shake hands — we had 300-something extras and military. Marines. We had to stop Will from doing that because of COVID,” the director explained.

“So, I saw a different person than that one moment in time, and so my reaction was that particular moment is very foreign to me when it comes to Will Smith. I have nothing but amazing things to say about Will Smith, really genuinely,” Fuqua continued. “You can ask anybody that worked on the movie, they’ll tell you the same. Nicest person I’ve ever met in my life. Chris Rock — I know Chris — Chris is a good guy too. I’ve spent time with Chris, and I think it’s an unfortunate event and I hope we can move forward and get past it.”

After “the slap,” it was unclear how Smith’s career would be impacted. Hours after he hit Rock in the face for making a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, the actor won his first ever Oscar. But production on a Netflix project and Bad Boys 4 were reportedly paused and slowed down. Apple TV+ stayed mum on whether Emancipation would be released as planned.

“Of course I wanted people to see the film. My conversation was always, ‘Isn’t 400 years of slavery, of brutality, more important than one bad moment?’ We were in Hollywood, and there’s been some really ugly things that have taken place, and we’ve seen a lot of people get awards that have done some really nasty things,” Fuqua told the magazine. “So I think Apple considered all those things, and we discussed a lot of those things. Then a decision was made by the people in charge of distribution and the money at Apple — and I’m grateful, I’m really grateful.

Smith answered some questions via email for the Vanity Fair profile, but declined to answer one about the slap and its effect on the movie. The actor has publicly apologized twice to Rock, been photographed in public a handful of times, but overall, has stayed out of the spotlight.

Emancipation is Smith’s follow-up to King Richard, which won him the Oscar in March for Best Actor. Smith plays Peter, known to history as “Whipped Peter,” an escaped slave-turned-Union Army soldier who is immortalized in 19th century pictures that reveal the scars on his back from a brutal whipping.

  • Taylor Swift ‘Eras’ tour ticket debacle explained

The “Anti-Hero” singer broke all kinds of records with the release of her latest album, Midnights. So you can imagine that ticket sales for her Eras tourher first since 2018would be big. We just didn’t predict it would go so awry during the pre-sale when an unprecedented number of fans with pre-sale codes flooded the site on Tuesday and bought up the tickets. As a result, the public ticket sales, which had been set for Friday, has been canceled with Ticketmaster, which is handling the sales, citing “insufficient remaining ticket inventory.”

So what happened? The pop superstar partnered with Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan program, which allowed her superfans — aka the Swifties — to pre-register earlier in the month to receive a special code that allowed for early ticket sales on Nov. 15 — three days before they go on sale to the general public. The verification process also aims to identify real humans versus bots to weed out bulk buying and reselling.

However, there was a glitch — or, for the most die-hard — a catastrophe. Fans logged in on Tuesday and were hit with error messages or trapped in the queue for two hours. Other fans who planned to get tickets were sent to a wait list. The sale of West Coast tickets was also delayed for three hours to ease traffic to the site. Angry fans captured screenshots of the glitches and posted them to social media slamming Ticketmaster. Ticketmaster was trending, with even U.S. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez weighing in.

The ticket company, owned by Live Nation, posted that there was a “historically unprecedented demand” with millions showing up to buy tickets. The business later posted an entire explainer unpacking what went wrong. It was known the sale was going to be a big deal after 3.5 million people pre-registered, the largest Verified Fan registration in history. That led to Swift’s tour team, managed by AEG and The Messina Touring Group, to add more shows, doubling the dates and the tickets. Approximately 1.5 million people were invited to participate in the presale with the other 2 million on a waiting list. Those numbers were decided because Ticketmaster historically sees 40% of invited fans, with the specials codes, actually showing up and buying tickets, and most purchase 3 tickets on average.

When the pre-sale tickets became available on Tuesday, those with the codes went to the site and so did fans who didn’t have a code. On top of that, there was a “staggering number of bot attacks,” with those factors resulting in unprecedented traffic to the site, according to Ticketmaster. There were 3.5 billion — yes, billion! — system requests, which was four times more than the company ever experienced. In total, 2 million tickets were sold that day — the most tickets ever sold for an artist in a single day. The company claims that every ticket was sold to a buyer with the special code.

  • There is no language stronger than your call for a coup in 2013 – Ablakwa to Ofori-Atta

Member of the 8-member ad hoc committee hearing the motion of censure against Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, took exception when the minister sought to raise an objection to some words used in the grounds for the motion.

According to Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the minister for finance had no moral authority to raise issues about the language used in the grounds supporting the motion against him.

“The minister himself on the 12th of March 2013, is on record at the William Ofori Atta Institute for Integrity Lectures to have actually called for a coup, nothing can be stronger than that. So I don’t think we will be taking lectures on language from the minister,” the MP stated during the committee’s sitting on Friday, November 18, 2022.

The censure motion against the minister brought by the minority group is on seven grounds which among other things levels allegations of conflict of interest, mismanagement of the Ghanaian economy, and breaching of the country’s fiscal management laws.

However, appearing before the committee to answer to the grounds of the motion, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta raised concerns about the language used by the proponents of the censure motion.

But according to Mr Ablakwa the finance minister by his concern “appears to want to lecture us on language.”

Referencing a statement by the finance minister in 2013, Mr Ablakwa said Ken Ofori-Atta by saying “the country’s silence on the election petition could trigger a coup” could not raise such an objection.

  • Motorcyclist dies in crash on Sofoline-Abuakwa highway

A motorcyclist believed to be in his late thirties lost his life in an accident involving a fuel tanker on the Sofoline-Abuakwa highway in the Ashanti Region on Thursday.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred after the deceased who was riding a motorbike got trapped under the fuel tanker while using the road and was later run over by the vehicle, thereby killing him instantly.

Eyewitnesses say, although the driver of the vehicle stopped to observe the happening, he later allegedly fled the scene after realizing that some youth were approaching his direction with different weapons to attack him.

“What happened was that my vehicle was faulty, so I was sitting down thinking about how to get it fixed. That was when I saw the fuel tanker and the motorbike approaching. All of a sudden, I saw the motor rider trapped under the tanker truck, and we just saw that the tanker truck had run over the man and crushed his head.”

“The tanker driver drove ahead to park at the traffic light area. It was then that some of the boys around started rushing towards the tanker driver with canes and other weapons. So, fearing for his life, the tanker driver ended up fleeing the scene. As for the deceased, he died instantly when we rushed to check on him,” an eyewitness, Kofi Yeboah, said.

The body of the deceased who is yet to be identified has been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) pending an autopsy.

  • 135 small businesses to get GH¢20.6 million grant

A total of 135 small businesses are in line to benefit from a disbursement of GH¢20.6 million grant aimed at cushioning businesses against the impact of COVID-19.

The disbursement is the second phase of the Ghana Economic Transformation Project (GETP) being implemented by the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA) with funding from the World Bank.

The beneficiary businesses operate in various sectors including agriculture, agro-processing, food and beverage, healthcare and manufacturing, education, and cut across the country.

They would receive between GH¢20,000 and GH¢55,000 grant to support their operational costs, including the purchase of raw materials and equipment.

At an orientation and agreement signing ceremony for the beneficiaries in Accra yesterday, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the GEA, Kosi Yankey-Ayeh, said the disbursement was the new round of the stimulus packages introduced by the government to cushion SMEs from the impact of the COVID-19 disease.

She explained that most small businesses, owing to the pandemic had ceased operations and closed down, resulting in livelihood losses.

The grant was thus introduced as part of the government’s initiative to promote private investments and growth in non-resource-based sectors.

According to her, the second phase of the grant programme was to provide liquidity and support for Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) in selected sectors to enable them to adjust and to grow out of the COVID-19 crisis.

Mr Yankey-Ayeh stated that the nationwide grant programme would focus on only SMEs most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as those who showed resistance during the pandemic.

She explained that the second phase of the grant programme was expected to spur the recovery of SMEs.

“It will focus strongly on export firms, female-owned enterprises, companies owned by persons with disability and youth enterprises,” she said.

During the phase one of the project which covered the period between September 2021 and March 2022, she said US$5 million was disbursed to over 370 SMEs.

Out of the 370 SMEs, she said 158, which were women-owned enterprises, were advanced various grants at a value of GH¢10.5 million.

The CEO cautioned the beneficiaries against misusing the grants adding that “use the funds efficiently to support the rebuild of the economy and if you do not use the money for the intended purpose will be made to refund.”

The Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei reiterated government’s commitment to support the growth and expansion of SMEs and contribute to the overall development of the economy.

The GETP grant, she explained, was another initiative to complement the Coronavirus Alleviation Programme Business Support Scheme (CAP-BuSS) in providing needed support to SMEs.

“This grant is provided to ensure that SMEs are supported amid the ravages of COVID-19 to create additional jobs to address the country’s unemployment situation,” he said.

  • Even if a vote of censure motion goes through, Akufo-Addo may revoke it – Nana Akomea

Former Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has said that the vote of censure filed by the minority caucus of Parliament against Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta might amount to nothing even if it is passed.

According to him, the 1992 Constitution indicates that the President of the Republic, which is now Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has the final say even if Parliament passes a vote of census against any of his appointees.

Nana Akomea, who made these remarks during a panel discussion on Good Morning Ghana monitored by GhanaWeb, added that the vote of censure might not even pass because the minority caucus does not have the support of the majority that they need.

“Even if you get the support of the majority on your vote of censure, what the Constitution says is very simple, it says in Clause 5 of Article 82 that where a vote of censure is passed against a minister the president may revoke (it).

“So, this vote of censure that you’re coming to beat us, that is the way to go and that is what will succeed; even if you succeed which is not likely if you don’t get the support of the majority; but even if you succeed and you have the numbers and you do it, it will still be left with the president.

“So, what is the rush (by the minority caucus),” he said.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, referred a vote of censure filed by the minority caucus of Parliament for the removal of Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, to an 8-member ad hoc committee which started meeting on Monday, November 14, and is expected to decide on the removal of the minister within 7 days.

The minority caucus has cited mismanagement of Ghana’s economy, conflict of interest, misrepresentation of figures on Ghana’s economy and unconstitutional withdrawal from the consolidated fund among others.

The majority caucus, who have also indicated that they want the minister removed, have, however, stated that they will not support the vote of censure spearheaded by the minority caucus of the House because they do not agree with the reasons the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs cited.

  • IUU fishing threatens marine ecosystems – Major-General Gyane

Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing remains one of the greatest threats to marine ecosystems due to its potent ability to undermine national and regional efforts to conserve and manage fish stocks.

It also jeopardises the management of fish stocks by disrupting regulatory processes as well as impacts negatively the livelihoods of coastal communities, including women and the youth.

This assertion was made by the commandant of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), Major-General Richard Addo Gyane, at the opening of a two-day Maritime Security Conference in Accra yesterday.

Themed ‘Maritime Security in the Gulf of Guinea: Rethinking the Past and Contemplating the Future,’ the meeting was organised by the KAIPTC in collaboration with the Stellenbosch University, South Africa, and the Royal Danish Defence College (RDDC).

According to Major-General Gyane, West Africa alone loses over $ 2 billion to illegal fishing annually.

This illegal activity, he said, contributed to unemployment and desperation in the region, adding that already there were fears that fishermen and other people in the value chain of fish processing, such as women and youth, may be pushed to a life of crime, particularly in the context of the current global economic challenges.

He mentioned that the pervasiveness of maritime security threats across the region illustrated the need for a holistic approach to maritime security response in the region.

“Sustainable development of the blue economy, improvement of the well-being of coastal communities and commitment and collaboration across agencies and governments are key in reducing maritime insecurity in the Gulf of Guinea,” he stressed.

He noted that the conference will afford participants the opportunity to take stock of past efforts, experiences and lessons learnt within the maritime space in the Gulf of Guinea (GoG) with the hope of applying them in future endeavour.

Making reference to the International Maritime Bureau’s half year report for 2022, he said 58 piracy incidents were recorded worldwide, adding that out of the figure only 12 were attributed to the GoG.

This, he said, had positive spin-offs for seafarers, the shipping industry and trade, leading to economic growth and development.

The commandant, therefore, underscored the need for continued efforts at ensuring the complete elimination of piracy in the GoG.

In his submission, Professor Thomas Mandrup, an Associate Professor at the University of Stellenbosch, said given the rising significance of oceans, it was imperative that coastal and island state governments in the GoG continued to design and align policies, strategies and ocean programmes to improve the security of their marine interests.

The ocean, he said, offered significant source of income which could soften the negative economic outlook facing several West African states.

According to Professor Mandrup, without strong political will and improvement of governance in the GoG states, it would be very difficult to realise the ocean’s potential.

  • Anny Osabutey: Sika mmp3 dede – The day Trasacco Paris Hilton was arrested

The first time I gave a thought to the term socialite was back in the late 2000, when the British tabloid The Sun, splashed on its cover, photos of Paris Hilton and a smiling Cristiano Ronaldo.

The headline was: Madrid via Paris. Ronaldo had secured a move to Real Madrid worth £80m from Manchester United. He headed off to Los Angeles where the tabloid captured him and Ms. Hilton firmly tucked in his arm.

The two were rumored to be in a relationship, so the image of them storming out of a night club was always going to be a paparazzi’s dream.  Though I knew about Paris Hilton because she was often the center of attention by most tabloids in the United States and even Britain.

Her alleged involvement with the Portuguese footballer excited me. I therefore did some reading about her background and what her story was. My initial thought was she may be an actress with lots of film credits to her name. But I discovered she was more than that; she was the great granddaughter of Conrad Hilton, the man who established the Hilton Hotels.

She was coming from a background that is very much roiled in wealth. As at the time of my research, she was also connected to modeling, entrepreneurship and products associated with her name could be identified in high earned shops in Europe and the Americas i.e., from handbags to perfumes and branded items, Ms. Hilton was adding on to the family fortune. She was one of the most photographed women in showbiz and her business interests were very much known to almost everyone who operated within the showbusiness industry.

Then a writer with strong interest in the showbiz industry, I contemplated writing an article about some of the high-profile women in the Ghanaian entertainment and fashion space, who could be our own Paris Hilton, or may fit the socialite profile.

The two names that came to mind were Confidence Haugen and Sally Kanbonaba. Confidence was the founder of Aphrodisiac Nightclub and Sally owned Monte Carlo Grand Café. The two places were in Dzorwulu and Labone and played hosts to most of the major events in the industry. I did not write the article but in a conversation with some colleague writers at the time, they felt the two fitted into the socialite labeling, especially in the Ghanaian context.

Stories about their private lives in newspapers were never boring, no matter how many times they appeared; from which men they were hanging out to the cars they drove, as well as other business interests.

Social media had not come onto the scene, so the newspapers were always the space to get either Sally or Confidence related gossips.

Miss Haugen is now a Queenmother in the Anlo area in the Volta region and doing great work in humanitarian services. I am not too sure about the whereabouts of Sally, though several conspiracy theories continue to hang in the air about her whereabouts.

Th emergence of social media tools like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and then TikTok, have very much changed the showbiz industry.

These platforms have also led to the increasing numbers of bloggers who continue to cultivate new breed of celebrities and socialites.

I have even lost count of the number of persons labeled as ‘celebrities’’ in this country. The term appears sexy in the minds of bloggers, and they cannot resist the temptation of using them to reference characters, even if the said character does not have enough showbiz credits to the name.

I can however count on my fingertips the number of persons I have heard being described as socialites.

The famous among them is Hajia4Real, the musician who is locked up in the United Kingdom over fraud allegations.  She is the only person I have read being described as a ‘socialite’ in writeups, or interviews posted on YouTube.

Her fleets of cars, designer clothing showoffs, open display of money at shops in Europe and opulence, have often generated gossips within the public. In most of the news articles written about her, she was often quoted as having attributed her wealth to endorsement deals, business partnerships with friends, business interests in the Northern region and other places.

However, in gossip chatrooms or WhatsApp platforms, not many believed her claim of rags to riches story; almost everyone knew what kind of business she was involved in, though they were often whispered in small groups.

The truth is, in Ghana, it is often seen as evil, trying to question where one gets his or her wealth. What is whispered in secrets is only spoken when the person has fallen foul of the law. It was therefore not surprising when rumors of Hajia4reall’s arrest dominated the headlines.

On Twitter, lots of people said they felt vindicated by what they had always suspected about her source of wealth.

She had not been convicted by any court yet. There is no public document detailing the exact crime she might have committed, but, in the eyes of the public, our most famous socialite turned musician, isn’t a Paris Hilton after all.

  • World Cup 2022: Alcohol sales banned at World Cup stadiums in Qatar

Alcohol will not be sold to fans at the World Cup’s eight stadiums in Qatar after Fifa changed its policy two days before the start of the tournament.

Alcohol was set to be served “in select areas within stadiums”, despite its sale being strictly controlled in the Muslim country.

Those in corporate areas of stadiums at the tournament will still be able to purchase alcohol.

The World Cup starts on Sunday when Qatar play Ecuador.

Budweiser, a major sponsor of Fifa, is owned by beer maker AB InBev and had exclusive rights to sell beer at the World Cup.

“Following discussions between host country authorities and Fifa, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the Fifa fan festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing sales points of beer from Qatar’s Fifa World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters,” said a statement from world football’s governing body.

“There is no impact to the sale of Bud Zero which will remain available at all Qatar’s World Cup stadiums.

“Host country authorities and Fifa will continue to ensure that the stadiums and surrounding areas provide an enjoyable, respectful and pleasant experience for all fans.

“The tournament organisers appreciate AB InBev’s understanding and continuous support to our joint commitment to cater for everyone during the Fifa World Cup Qatar 2022.”

Budweiser posted a message on Twitter on Friday saying, “Well, this is awkward” before the post was later deleted.

An AB InBev spokesperson said that they could not proceed with “some of the planned stadium activations” because of “circumstances beyond our control”.

The Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) criticised the timing of the decision to ban the sale of beer for most fans.

“Some fans like a beer at a game and some don’t, but the real issue is the last minute U-turn which speaks to a wider problem – the total lack of communication and clarity from the organising committee towards supporters,” said an FSA spokesperson.

“If they can change their minds on this at a moment’s notice, with no explanation, supporters will have understandable concerns about whether they will fulfil other promises relating to accommodation, transport or cultural issues.”

In August, Fifa changed the start date of the World Cup so that the first game of the competition would be Qatar facing Ecuador.

The game was scheduled to be played on 21 November as the third game, with Senegal against the Netherlands set to be the opening match earlier that day.

A private hostel at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Tamale, has been gutted by fire.

The incident which occurred on Thursday destroyed almost all 18 rooms at the hotel.

According to the property owners, only two students were in the hostel at the time of the incident, as the university is currently on its trimester break.

A visit by Citi News to the hostel saw the properties of students burnt completely.

Some carpenters were also seen at the scene removing the damaged roofing.

“The whole building, aside from three rooms that were salvaged was caved in already,” Northern Regional PRO for GNFS, ADO II, Baba Hudu, said to Citi News.

“That was because the inhabitant did not call the fire service in time. When they called the fire service too… It took the first pump to arrive at the scene after 14 minutes,” he added.

  • Proponents’ allegations lack weight for my censure – Ofori-Atta

The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta has said the Minority’s basis for the censure motion to remove him from office have no substance.

“The proponents’ allegations do not have weight for censure”, Mr. Ofori-Atta said when he appeared before the Ad hoc Committee of Parliament probing the motion.

The Minister denied all claims by the Minority, including being reckless in handling the economy which has resulted in the current economic challenges.

Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta stated that it is rather certain actions of the Minority in Parliament in 2021 that created chaos, leading to mistrust and subsequent withdrawal of investments from the country by investors.

“I have not been reckless in the management of the fiscal operations of the government.

“Hon Co-Chairs, the ground of recklessness presupposes that I have not been guided by the laid-down regulations.

“I want to state that I have not been reckless in the management of the fiscal operations of the government,” he told the Adhoc Committee on Friday.

“Rather, our strenuous efforts to protect the public purse is what has helped this government to have achieved much, much more than any government over a similar period in virtually all sectors, including education, health, social welfare, policing, security in general, roads, railways, agriculture, industrialisation, tourism, digitization, and funding for anti-corruption institutions,” he said.

Responding to the allegations of breaching some constitutional provisions for not seeking parliamentary approval before expending funds, he said Parliament approved every expenditure undertaken by the Ministry of Finance.

“On all those occasions, I received approval as Parliament subsequently passed Appropriations Bills for all those Budgets.

“Every key expenditure made has been supported by this House.

“Indeed, we all saw the dire consequences when the House, for months, refused to pass a major revenue generation item introduced by this government to support the fiscal stability of the economy,” Mr. Ofori-Atta said.

  • Suspend implementation of Act banning importation of some used cars – Minority to GSA

The Minority in Parliament is asking the Ghana Standards Authority to suspend the implementation of Act 891 passed by Parliament to ensure road safety.

According to the Customs (Amendment) Act 2020, Section 61 of Act 891 amended, all used vehicles imported into the country must be accompanied by a certificate of conformance.

According to the Ghana Standards Authority, no used vehicle will be allowed into the country without the certificate.

But addressing the media in Parliament, Minority spokesperson on Roads and Transport, Governs Kwame Agbodza warned any hasty implementation of the Act will result in revenue losses to government.

The Adaklu MP is therefore asking the Ghana Standards Authority to freeze the implementation and consult more in order for the Act not to suffer same fate as the luxury vehicles tax which was later aborted.

“If they have done their work, I wouldn’t be talking because I have met the used vehicle dealers, I have met members of the public who are complaining about this. As a Member of Parliament on the Roads and Transport Committee, I’m not aware of any public education on this. All we saw was a news item, we are not saying the law is on our books, we have passed many laws that on hindsight we realized that, that is not the right thing. I use the example of the Luxury Vehicle Tax, everybody thought it was going to bring some sanity on our roads but we had to come back and withdraw it. Withdrawal of the road toll, another mess, the implementation of E-Levy. So any time we caution, it is simply because we needed to take time to do these things.

Nobody is saying that vehicles that are totally damaged should be brought into the country. The implementation of this should be in such a way that the average Ghanaian or those who need this can participate in the engagements.”

  • ‘Gogo’ Priscilla – world’s ‘oldest pupil’ dies at 100

Kenya’s Priscilla Sitienei, who was thought to be the world’s oldest school pupil has died peacefully at home at the age of 100.

“Gogo”, which means grandmother in the local Kalenjin language, was what Ms Sitienei was affectionately known as by many.

Her grandson Sammy Chepsiror, told Kenya’s The Standard newspaper: “She died peacefully in the presence of some family members. We are thankful for the 100 years of her life. She made all of us proud.”

Ms Sitienei’s story became the inspiration for the French film Gogo Priscilla which lead to a meeting with France’s First Lady, Brigette Macron.

In a tribute on Twitter, one of the film’s co-writers said Ms Sitienei’s “message on girls’ education remains”.

Ms Sitienei began attending Vision Preparatory School with her great-great grandchildren after she decided at age 90 to return to primary education, having worked for several decades as a traditional midwife.

She wasn’t able to attend school as a child but when the Kenyan government began subsidising primary school fees in 2003, it allowed her and other senior citizens, another chance.

She told the BBC back in 2015 that she wanted to inspire older children who were not attending school to go back saying: “They tell me they are too old,” she says, “I tell them, ‘Well I am at school and so should you.
