Kenyan attorneys demonstrate against Ruto’s threats against justice

Many lawyers in Nairobi, Kenya are protesting because President William Ruto is not following court orders.

The lawyers are walking in a protest from the highest court to the president’s office. The protest was arranged by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).

President Ruto was strongly criticized last week for saying he might not follow court orders. He claimed that some judges were working with opposition politicians and other groups to stop his government’s plans.

The leader of this country must follow the laws, just like everyone else. So we don’t think he should speak as if following court orders is a special thing he’s doing for the country. “It is a rule in the constitution,” said LSK president Eric Theuri during a press conference on Thursday.

Mr Theuri said that LSK will think about starting the process to remove Mr Ruto from his position because he is not following the rules of the constitution if he keeps criticizing the judiciary.

LSK has put together a group of lawyers to submit a request to the High Court to say that Mr. Ruto broke the rules of the constitution, Mr. Theuri told the privately-owned Standard newspaper.

Many well-known Kenyan lawyers, like former Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka and former minister Eugene Wamalwa, who are now opposition politicians, have joined the protest.

The top judge and a political leader told Mr Ruto that not following the court’s decisions could cause chaos in the country.

  • Houthi attacks in Yemen are self-defense – Rishi Sunak

Houthi attacks in Yemen are self-defense – Rishi Sunak

Attacks on Houthi rebel places in Yemen are “important and appropriate” to keep the global shipping safe in the Red Sea, Rishi Sunak has said.

The UK and US bombed military sites during the night.

Mr Sunak said that the UK took action against a group that is supported by Iran and poses a threat to UK ships. He said this action was taken to protect themselves.

In return, Houthi leaders have said that the UK and US will face severe consequences.

The US and its allies bombed the Houthi group for the first time because they have been attacking ships in the Red Sea.

The Houthis are in charge of a lot of Yemen and have said that they are helping Hamas by attacking ships going to Israel.

The US Air Force hit over 60 targets at 16 places in Yemen that were being used by Houthi rebels.

On Friday morning, Mr. Sunak said that the Houthi rebels are causing problems for UK and international ships and disrupting trade routes.

The prime minister said that, even though the international community has warned them many times, the Houthis keep attacking ships in the Red Sea, including those from the UK and US.

“This is not acceptable. ” The UK will always support the right for ships to travel wherever they want and for trade to happen freely.

He said the UK took some action to defend itself with help from the United States, Netherlands, Canada, and Bahrain.

MrSunak said the action was done to weaken the Houthi military and to protect ships around the world.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the Royal Air Force typhoons did two very accurate attacks on Houthi sites. One was an airfield used to launch drones and missiles over the Red Sea and the other site was used to launch attack drones.

“The MoD is still looking at the results of the strikes, but it looks like the Houthis may not be able to attack merchant ships as easily anymore. ”

    ‘Not a lot of’. needed

Armed Forces Minister James Heappey said that there are no more air strikes planned for now.

“We believed that the small and necessary attacks last night were important to stop the Houthis from being able to attack our warships in the Red Sea,” he said on BBC Breakfast.

MrHeappey said it was just self-defence and that the government’s legal position was strong.

The Labour Party leader, Sir Keir Starmer, supports the strikes after being briefed by the government on Thursday night.

“He said on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Breakfast show that the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea need to be stopped. They are attacking commercial ships and important trade routes, and putting civilian lives in danger. We support taking action against them. ”

Retired leader of the British Army Lord Dannatt said on the BBC that the UK and US, who are permanent members of the UN Security Council, have a duty to protect global trade.

We should hope that this is a careful and smart plan that will quickly make it safe for ships to use the Red Sea instead of the expensive route around the Cape of Good Hope.

Lord Ricketts said that attacking the Houthi sites was going to happen because the rebel group didn’t listen to warnings and attacked US and UK naval ships.

“They just couldn’t let this go on,” he said on BBC Radio 4’s Today show. “I believe the US-led group made their efforts big to send a strong message, but also made it clear that it’s only aimed at stopping attacks on ships, not starting a war with the Houthis. ”

In response to the attacks, a Houthi leader warned that the US and UK will soon understand that the strikes on Yemen were a big mistake.

The group says they will keep on attacking ships in the Red Sea that are going to Israel or connected to Israel.

“We say there is no reason for attacking Yemen because they were not a threat to ships in the Red and Arabian Seas,” said spokesman Mohammed Abdulsalam.

“The attacks will keep happening on Israeli ships or ones going to the ports of occupied Palestine.

  • Cape Verde earns historic malaria-free status in West Africa

Cape Verde earns historic malaria-free status in West Africa

A country in Africa has been declared free from malaria for the first time in 50 years.

Cape Verde got a special status from the World Health Organization (WHO) because it hasn’t had any local transmission of a disease for three years.

Experts say this is a big accomplishment.

Malaria kills a lot of people in Africa. In 2022, 580,000 people died from the disease in Africa, which is 95% of all the deaths around the world.

The sickness is because of a complicated germ that is passed on by mosquito bites.

Some places are using vaccines to prevent malaria, but the best way to stop the disease is to keep an eye on it and avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes.

Cape Verde, a tiny group of islands near West Africa, has worked for many years to improve its health care and make sure everyone can get diagnosed and treated for illnesses.

The surveillance officers have been finding and controlling cases of diseases early, and also getting rid of mosquitoes.

Cape Verde has a plan to control malaria. They provide free care and testing for people from other countries who come to visit or move there. They want to stop the spread of malaria from Africa to Cape Verde.

This success shows how many health professionals, collaborators, communities, and international partners worked hard and were dedicated to the cause. “Cape Verde’s Health Minister, Dr. Filomena Gonçalves, told the BBC that it shows what can be done when people work together to make public health better. ”

Dr Dorothy Achu Fosah, from the WHO Africa office, said her organization is happy with the results and with the fact that malaria has been eliminated from the country.

Health experts say that Cape Verde has done an impressive job in controlling and getting rid of a disease. Other small countries can learn from their success and see that their methods can be effective.

Malaria used to be on all of Cape Verde’s nine inhabited islands, but now it’s only on one island, Sáo Tiago. The last efforts to get rid of it are focused there.

DrAchu from the WHO said that the country being made up of many islands is also a big reason for its success.

It’s easier to track the spread of the disease on an island compared to a big piece of land.

In Nigeria, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, many people move between countries, which makes it hard for one country to get rid of the disease by itself.

DrTedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the World Health Organization, said that Cape Verde’s success in fighting malaria gives us hope that we can use tools, including vaccines, to dream of a world without malaria.

Mauritius, an island nation in Africa, was the last country in sub-Saharan Africa to be declared free from malaria in 1973. Algeria, in the northern part of Africa, got this title in 2019.

  • UK to boost its aid to Ukraine to £2.5 billion – Rishi Sunak

UK to boost its aid to Ukraine to £2.5 billion – Rishi Sunak

The UK is going to give Ukraine £2. 5 billion worth of military help in the next year, which is the biggest amount of aid since Russia invaded Ukraine.

The Prime Minister said this while visiting the country, and he will also sign a new deal to help with its safety in the future.

Authorities said that the package will give Ukraine missiles that can travel far distances, defense against attacks from the air, and shells for their artillery.

About £200 million will be used to buy drones, and most of them will will be made in the UK.

Authorities say that next year, a big package of military equipment will be given to Ukraine. It will include a lot of drones, which is the most that any country has provided to Ukraine.

The prime minister has chosen not to promise money for many years.

Some government officials and high-ranking military leaders believed that by doing this, it would show Russia that Britain supports them for a long time.

Instead of spending the same amount as the last two years, Mr. Sunak has decided to spend an extra £200 million. The UK’s yearly military support for Ukraine was £2. 3 billion

Downing Street plans to offer help to Ukraine as the first step in building a strong long-term relationship between Ukraine and the UK.

It will also give £18 million to help people in need, support strengthening Ukraine’s energy systems, and give more money for teaching English online.

James Heappey, who is in charge of the military, said on BBC Breakfast that the drones will help Ukraine in the future.

He said: “They are unmanned aircraft that are being created quickly, taking into account all the things we learned from what happened in Ukraine over the last two years. ”

He said that the money shows that the UK is still being a leader in Europe by giving a lot of money to Ukraine.

Mr Sunak, who went to Ukraine 15 months ago in November 2022, said: “I am here today to say that the UK will not give up. ” We will be there for Ukraine when things are hard and when things get better in the future.

He said: “The UK is already one of Ukraine’s best friends, because we know their safety is our safety.

Today, we are giving more military help to Ukraine. We are also giving them lots of new drones and making a new security agreement with them. This will help Ukraine feel safer and more secure in the future.

“For two years, Ukraine has bravely defended itself against a strong attack from Russia. ” They are still fighting strong to protect their country and the principles of freedom and democracy.

The UK finally promised to support Ukraine after MPs pushed for the government to do so. They said the government should have been clearer earlier so Ukraine could plan its military strategy.

Both the United States and the European Union are having a hard time deciding on how to help Ukraine, which really needs more shells and missiles.

In the US, some politicians are stopping a $60 billion package to help Ukraine because they want to use the money for dealing with migration at the border.

Viktor Orban, the leader of Hungary, stopped a €50bn (£43bn) aid package for Ukraine from the EU because of a disagreement with Brussels over funding.

The UK and Ukraine are signing an agreement today. It includes promises to help each other with military and economic support. This is to stop Russia from attacking Ukraine before Ukraine becomes a part of Nato.

Authorities said that the UK is the first out of seven major industrialized countries to sign an agreement. All seven countries promised to do this at a meeting last year.

  • Between the BBC and T.B. Joshua

Between the BBC and T.B. Joshua

I was taken aback on the evening of 9 January 2009 when my principal, the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua asked, “Who is Prophet Joshua?” I wasn’t sure how to respond in case the late cleric had been recommended to him. Apparently sensing my unease, he explained what led to the question. Following the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) meeting which ended that day, he (Yar’Adua) had asked then president of Ghana, Professor John Atta Mills, to stay the night in Abuja so they could have dinner together. But the man insisted he would spend the weekend in Lagos with the said Prophet. “I have not heard the name before,” the president told me while reeling out the names of prominent Christian clerics in the country with whom he was familiar. With that, I felt comfortable enough to share what I had read and heard about the late Pastor Temitope Joshua whom I never met.

What I found remarkable about the episode was that Atta Mills had only been sworn in as Ghanaian president five days before arriving Abuja for the ECOWAS session. Yet, he chose to spend the first weekend of his tenure in Lagos to attend The Synagogue Church of all Nations (SCOAN) thanksgiving service. “I am no stranger to the Synagogue. Indeed, I have been here very regularly. And I have known the man of God for more than 10 years,” late Atta Mills told the congregation on Sunday 11 January 2009 while crediting his victory at the polls to Joshua’s prediction. And we are talking about a professor of law who obtained his LLM from the London School of Economics and Political Science and PhD at 27 from the School of Oriental and African Studies. “Now, if there is anybody who does not believe in God, I would say our elections should change that person’s mind. God gave us more than we asked for,” enthused Atta Mills who then faced Joshua, “Man of God, I want to thank the Almighty for using you and many others.”

From the late President Frederick Chiluba of Zambia to the recently ousted President Omar Bongo of Gabon, to former President Joyce Banda of Malawi, to South African Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini, to the late former Zimbabwean Prime Minister, Morgan Tsvangirai, numerous African leaders (political and traditional) placed great faith in the late Joshua as their spiritual mentor. However, a new documentary by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has, to put it mildly, painted a rather unflattering profile of the cleric. Since the serious allegations are already in the public domain, I see no point in repeating them here.

Although SCOAN has issued a rebuttal, arguing that the BBC turned “itself into a weapon for a hatchet job as gangsters in the garb of journalism with a destructive ulterior motive for personal gains against a perceived enemy”, the only official line in the documentary is that most of the allegations now being peddled were also levelled against Joshua when he was alive, and none was proven. That may not be entirely correct. In September 2014, for instance, there was a building collapse at the SCOAN headquarters in Lagos that claimed several lives, mostly foreigners. Following the tragedy, the late Joshua told tales of how he received a call that a mysterious aircraft was hovering over his prayer room before getting another call shortly after “that the jet has moved to the church and that was it.” Not only was his claim disputed, but the Lagos State Coroner’s Inquest also indicted the church leadership for “criminal negligence” and recommended prosecution for the death of 116 persons. 84 of those unfortunate victims were South Africans, 22 were Nigerians, two each were Beninoise and Togolese and one, Zimbabwean. The nationalities of five could not be ascertained. According to the Coroner’s Court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Oyetade Komolafe, the Church did not obtain the necessary permit or approval before commencing construction of the building.

I am aware that the late Joshua means many things to many people. And I have seen some pushback against the BBC for airing the documentary. Incidentally, Pastor Chris Okotie of the Household of God had openly challenged Joshua’s doctrines and practices when he was alive, so controversy had always swirled around the man. My sister, Dr Abimbola Adelakun of the University of Texas, Austin, United States, also wrote several uncomplimentary articles about Joshua and his ministry. Now that he is late, what is being imputed by the BBC are serious crimes not only against Nigerians but also foreigners. It is therefore in the interest of our country, and SCOAN itself, that the allegations be fully investigated. It is also important to stress that until then, the late Joshua remains innocent in the eyes of the law.

However, we should all be concerned about the role of religion in Nigeria. In September 2019, as many as 300 chained inmates, including children, were rescued by thepolice from the‘Sheikh Ahmad Bin Hambal Islamic School and Rehabilitation Centre’ in Kaduna State. It was a story that caught global attention as survivors shared sordid tales of torture, sexual exploitation and bestiality. Today, nobody knows what has happened to those hapless victims and there is no report that anyone has been brought to justice for the heinous crime against humanity. Four years ago, Dr Hadiza Kere Abdulrahman, a lecturer in Inclusive Education, Bishop Grosseteste University, United Kingdom, used the sordid Kaduna spectacle to explain the socio-political dynamics in Nigeria and the lessons we have all refused to learn.

According to Abdulrahman, “the abuse found in these so-called ‘Qur’anic schools’ is replicated in several other contexts in Nigeria—in homes with people hired as domestic help being whipped for minor misdemeanors.” Such abuse, she further stated “is also replicated in other religious establishments where people are taken for deliverance, in Nigeria’s prison system where everything goes, and in government boarding schools which can sometimes be brutal. This abuse is seen even in the few government-owned rehabilitation facilities where inmates are shackled.” She then concluded: “It would be a mighty shame—and a missed opportunity—if Nigerians didn’t use the opportunity of the horror stories to take a hard look at themselves.” Of course, no lessons were learnt from that tragic episode and many already believe that the BBC documentary on Joshua may also compel no action. Yet, this should be another teachable moment. Just yesterday, Daily Trust newspaper published an investigative report on one Hassan Patigi, a preacher and exorcist who draws huge crowds in Kwara and Niger States where he abuses and defrauds the sick people he claims to be healing.

Since African culture frowns at speaking ill of the dead, it is understandable that some would question the motive of the BBC in running a documentary on Joshua who can no longer defend himself. But those who follow the media outfit, and its crime investigation series, know there is nothing unusual about this episode. ‘The Reckoning: the horrendous true story behind the Jimmy Savile case’ for instance details allegations of sexual abuse against British television personality Jimmy Savile. It was only after his death in 2011 that numerous allegations emerged about his predatory behaviour, hence the posthumous documentary. Similarly, ‘House of Maxwell: Like Father, Like Daughter’ is about Ghislaine Maxwell, currently in jail for helping American billionaire, Jeffrey Epstein (who committed suicide in detention) to sexually abuse teenage girls. She is the daughter of the deceased (and disgraced) newspaper tycoon Robert Maxwell.

Because the BBC documentary on Joshua is a media investigation, it does not on its own convict of guilt. But the allegations deserve to be properly investigated by appropriate authorities for the good of society. Beyond that, it is also important for the leadership of both the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) to be interested in this matter. There have in recent times been many reports of unwholesome practices by people who claim to be Christian clerics of various denominations. Many of the reports border on abuse of their members. Some are told to eat grass. Some are stamped upon. Some, especially female members, are made to unclothe before clerics who openly fondle their private parts. Tales of midnight ‘deliverances’ that end in bed abound. All these in the name of performing ‘miracles’ by perverts who prey on the ignorance and desperation of our people.

This of course is not a new phenomenon, and the challenge is global. Literature that readers may find useful include ‘Soft Shepherd or Almighty Pastor: Power and Pastoral Care’ by Annemie Dillen and Cristina Traina’s ‘A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing: Dealing Honestly with Pastoral Power’. Triana, whose thesis focuses on “the undeniable power of many kinds—social, ecclesial, and psychological, among others—that resides with the pastor,” argues that the unequal power relationship imposes both a measure of responsibility and duty of care. “When a person enters a church or a church-related environment and seeks direct help from and relationship with a pastor, in a very visceral way, God has been called into the conversation, too, and for some of the most broken persons, the minister’s words and God’s words become one and the same.”

What the BBC documentary has shown quite clearly is that healthy boundaries must be set between clerics and members of their congregations. And that is where the problem lies in Nigeria. As we can see from other areas of our national life, boundary violations derive from unequal powers and to the extent that these dynamics are now very prevalent in the church, we must begin to deal with them.

Overall, regardless of what anybody may believe concerning the allegations against Joshua, four critical issues have been raised. First is how easy it is for religion to mask sundry violations of human rights. Second is an unfortunate anachronism about our society. A supposedly modern nation based on rational principles is still chained to primordial superstitions and practices, patronized openly by those in power and the guardians of civic morality and conduct.

And because of that, human rituals, recourse to strange ‘prayer sessions’, seeking occult solutions to basic human problems or health afflictions requiring simple medical cures, etc. are now the order of the day. Third, in Nigeria today, religion and politics continue to meet and mix. It is therefore little surprise that so-called men of God use the power of belief to chain their followers to degrading abuses just as spurious politicians hoodwink the poor and helpless to steal the commonwealth. Four, in a system where powerful people permit themselves the indulgence of operating above the law, those who are supposed to set examples for the rest of society can only end up as outlaws. When that happens, we are all losers.

To change the narrative, we must begin to hold people in power—whether it be in the political, academic, business or religious realm—accountable for their actions.

Volta REGSEC vows to shoot down any intruding drone sighted around restricted areas

The Volta Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has expressed concern over the repeated sighting of drones hovering over restricted areas and security installations within the Ho Municipality and other parts of the region.

In August 2023, following directives from REGSEC, the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) issued a warning to the public regarding the unauthorized use of drones in and around specific locations, including the Residency, 66 Artillery Regiment (Volta Barracks), Ho Central Prisons, and other restricted areas in the region.

A statement by the REGSEC reminded “members of the general public that all restricted areas in the region and security installations are classified as security zones and must be recognised as such”.

The REGSEC revealed it has “authorised the Military, Police, and National Security to henceforth shoot down or capture any intruding drone or flying device sighted or being operated in and around all restricted areas and security installations in the region without requisite permission”.

It entreated members of the general public to “seek clearance” from the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) and other relevant State Security Institutions “at least five (5) clear working days before undertaking any drone operations in the region”.

Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, has refuted allegations that he and his entire immediate family have fled Ghana in connection with the $100 million corruption scandal involving Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML).

He clarified that he has returned to the country and is actively performing his duties as the Commissioner-General of the GRA after a brief visit with his family abroad.

“As you can see I have not abandoned my position because of the SML deal”, he said after caught up with him during an inspection tour of some GRA offices in the Greater Accra region.

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa on Wednesday January 10, 2023 alleged on social media platform ‘X’ that Dr. Owusu-Amoah, and his entire nuclear family have absconded Ghana.

According to Mr. Ablakwa, the Commissioner-General left the country hours before President Akufo-Addo called for an investigation into the matter.

But speaking to Joy Business, Dr. Owusu-Amoah, said the allegations by the MP are false and unfounded.

“I am back in the country after a brief visit outside the country which was planned earlier this year”

He assured that the GRA will continue to work as prescribed by the laws of the country to generate the needed revenue for economic development.

He stressed that all staff and personnel in the authority have pledged their commitment to assist the current administration achieve the revenue target outlined for the year.

  • Israeli officials back destruction of Gaza – Court told

Israeli officials back destruction of Gaza – Court told

Israel’s top leaders want to “destroy” Gaza, according to the highest level of government, as the UN’s top court has been told.

South African lawyers said that Israel is killing many people and they are taking their case to the International Court of Justice.

South Africa wants the court to tell Israel to stop its fighting in Gaza.

Israel will present its defence on Friday and has strongly denied the accusations as being without evidence.

The court will only give its opinion on the genocide allegation and many people are paying attention to it.

Tembeka Ngcukaitobi, a lawyer in South Africa, said that Israel’s intention to commit genocide is clear from the way they are conducting their military attack.

“He said that the plan to destroy Gaza has been supported by the top leaders of the country. ”

Adila Hassim from South Africa said that every day the Palestinian people are facing a lot of loss, including lives, homes, respect, and their basic rights.

“Only a decision from this court can make the suffering stop. ”

South Africa said that Israel’s actions were meant to destroy many Palestinian people.

Israel will show how it defends itself on Friday. It has said before that it is justified in attacking the Gaza Strip because it is responding to Hamas’s deadly attacks on 7 October.

On Thursday, South Africa’s Justice Minister Ronald Lamola said that no attack can justify breaking the Genocide Convention.

Israel has agreed to the Genocide Convention of 1948. This agreement means they promise to stop genocide and take action to prevent it from happening.

On Thursday, a spokesperson for Israel’s foreign ministry, Lior Haiat, said that South Africa’s case has completely twisted the truth about what’s happening in Gaza. He said that Hamas attackers have entered Israel and killed, executed, massacred, raped, and kidnapped Israeli citizens.

He said Israel will keep its people safe under the rules of the world, while telling the difference between Hamas fighters and regular people.

The ICJ is the top court of the United Nations, located in The Hague in the Netherlands. The decisions of the ICJ are supposed to be followed by countries like Israel and South Africa, but they cannot be forced to follow them.

In 2022, the court told Russia to stop fighting in Ukraine right away, but they didn’t listen.

According to the law, genocide means doing something on purpose to destroy a group of people because of their nationality, race, or religion.

There were fights outside the Peace Palace, where the ICJ is, as police tried to separate Palestinian and Israeli supporters.

Many people holding Palestinian flags came to the ICJ and asked for a stop to the fighting. Israeli supporters put up a big TV to show pictures of the people still being kept captive in Gaza.

The police put red and white tape outside the ICJ to try to make the chaotic scenes outside more organized.

Inside the court, the Israeli delegation is listening to South Africa’s lawyers accuse the country’s forces of committing genocide in Gaza, which is very different from the formal atmosphere in the court.

Israel’s group will talk about their right to protect themselves under the law. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel does not plan to kick out the people of Gaza or take over the land forever.

The ICJ can’t punish people for genocide, like the ICC can, but its decisions are important to the UN and other global groups.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Wednesday that South Africa is taking action against the killing of people in Gaza by going to the ICJ.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog said the accusations were terrible and ridiculous.

“We will go to the International Court of Justice and proudly present our case for using self-defense under humanitarian law,” he said.

He said that the Israeli army is doing their best in difficult situations to avoid any unintended harm to civilians.

The ICJ may make a quick decision on whether Israel should stop its military campaign in South Africa’s request. But it could take a long time for a final decision on whether Israel is committing genocide.

South Africa strongly disagrees with Israel’s military operation in Gaza, and its ruling African National Congress has always supported the Palestinian cause.

It relates its fight against apartheid to the struggle of racial segregation and discrimination in South Africa, which ended with the first democratic elections in 1994.

In Gaza, over 23,350 people, mostly women and children, have been killed since the war started after Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7th. In those attacks, about 1,300 people were killed, mostly innocent people, and about 240 others were taken as hostages.

A member of the ad-hoc Parliamentary Committee responsible for probing the leaked tape implicating senior police officers in an alleged plot against the Inspector General of Police, James Agalga, has disclosed that the committee’s yet-to-be-finalized report closely corresponds to the information already circulating in the public domain.

Mr. Agalga admitted that, while the committee has not officially completed its tasks or submitted the final report to the Speaker of Parliament, the initial findings and recommendations do not significantly deviate from the information already available to the public.

Although he acknowledged being aware of the leaked report circulating, Agalga abstained from making detailed comments on its content. He stressed the importance of fairness and reserved judgment until the committee’s work concludes formally.

“I have seen the report which is making the rounds, the committee hasn’t concluded its work yet, but I take note of the fact that certain things said in there may not be substantially different from what we said in the original draft,” he conveyed to Joy News.

The leaked report, purported to be a draft copy of the committee’s findings, suggested sanctions for the implicated senior police officers.

However, the Chairman of the committee, Samuel Atta Akyea, clarified that the committee has not concluded its work and, therefore, urged the public to exercise patience while awaiting the official and finalised report.

  • Our Commissional General has not absconded, he’s on leave – GRA replies Ablakwa

Our Commissional General has not absconded, he’s on leave – GRA replies Ablakwa

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has denied media reports suggesting that its Commissioner-General, Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Adu Owusu-Amoah, has fled Ghana in connection with the $100 million corruption scandal involving Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML).

As per a statement released on January 11, 2024, the GRA affirmed that Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Adu Owusu-Amoah is currently on a six-day leave and has not fled Ghana in relation to the ongoing investigation into the SML contract conducted by KPMG.

The statement further clarified that Rev. Dr. Owusu-Amoah’s absence has got nothing to do with investigations into the alleged fraudulent SML contract and that the leave was approved a month ago.

It added that the commissioner-general is scheduled to resume work on Monday, January 15, 2024.

“Management of the GRA wishes to categorically state that, the Commissioner-General of GRA, Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, has not absconded as stated in the said publication.

“The Commissioner-General is currently on a scheduled six (6) day leave which had been approved a month ago. Rev. Dr. Owusu-Amoah will resume work on Monday, 15th January, 2024. While on leave, every engagement that is required of him or GRA in the Audit by KPMG is being diligently attended to either by himself or one of the commissioners,” part of the statement, reads.

It added that “It is a malicious, sensational, misleading and deliberate attempt to damage the reputation of the Commissioner-General, Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah and the GRA as a whole”.

    Background:

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, alleged that the Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Adu Owusu-Amoah, and his entire nuclear family have absconded Ghana over the $100 million Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) corruption scandal.

According to him, the commissioner-general, who signed the $100 million SML contract, left the country hours before President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo called for an investigation into the matter.

The MP, who made these claims in a post shared on X on Wednesday, January 11, 2024, accused President Akufo-Addo of having no intention to get to the bottom of the SML matter because there is no way the GRA boss could have travelled out of the country without his blessings.

He added that “the Owusu-Amoahs’ first travel destination when they left Accra a week ago was São Tomé and Príncipe, and continuous tracking appears to paint a picture of a family in no hurry to return to Ghana, that is, if they will ever return.”

Ablakwa also alleged that the commissioner-general has told his close relations that he has no intention of returning to Ghana anytime soon.

He pointed out that the absence of the GRA boss means that the investigation Akufo-Addo called for, which is being conducted by KPMG, would go nowhere.

    About the SML scandal:

An investigation piece by an Accra-based media house, The Fourth Estate, titled, ‘The GH¢ 3 Billion Lie’, accused the Ministry of Finance of awarding a $100 million contract to SML to monitor Upstream Petroleum Production and to Audit the value chain of Minerals and Metals Resources.

Both the GRA and SML came out to justify the agreements that bind the two entities.

SML has stated that its upstream operations have not commenced, and therefore, no revenue has been generated. The company pointed out that the $100 million per year payment allegation is entirely fictional.

President Akufo-Addo appointed KPMG to conduct an immediate audit into the transaction between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilization Ghana Ltd (SML).

A contract which was entered into to enhance revenue assurance in the downstream petroleum sector, the upstream petroleum production and minerals and metals resources value chain.

In a statement issued by the Director of Communication at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin indicated that the President also tasked KPMG to complete the assignment in two weeks and submit appropriate recommendations to him.

The president also directed the Ministry of Finance and GRA to provide KPMG with whatever assistance they will require for conduct of the audit.

He further directed the Ministry of Finance and the Ghana Revenue Authority to suspend the performance of the contract, pending the submission of the audit report, including any payments presently envisaged under its terms.

China censures Taiwanese voters denounces ‘brazen’ US

China said that if the ruling party candidate William Lai wins, it could cause problems for their relationship.

The US was warned by Beijing not to cause trouble before Saturday’s vote, but it did not listen. This made Beijing very angry.

Who the people choose in the poll could make the island move closer to or further away from Beijing.

Taiwan is an important place where China and the US are competing to be more powerful in Asia.

China’s Taiwan Affairs office said that if Mr Lai is elected, he would continue to support actions to separate Taiwan from China.

He kept doing bad things to make others want independence. It said in a statement that Taiwan would be pushed farther from peace and prosperity and closer to war and decline.

Mr Lai from the DPP wants voters to choose the best way to keep Taiwan independent. Hou Yu-ih from the Kuomintang (KMT) said Mr. Lai is a threat to relations with China.

Many people in Taiwan feel like they are their own country, but they don’t want to officially separate from China or join it. They want things to stay the way they are.

The island thinks it is different from the mainland, but China says it belongs to the country and might use force to make it part of China.

Mr Lai was just a little bit ahead in the race to be president before voting ended on January 2nd. There are also elections for the parliament happening.

China told the US to stop talking about the election.

Beijing’s foreign ministry criticized Washington for saying it would send a group of people to Taiwan after the vote.

$300k was spent on ‘cancelled’ The Convention event – Cheddar reveals

Presidential aspirant Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar or Freedom Jacob Caesar, has disclosed that he invested $300,000 in orchestrating the ‘The Convention’ program for his outfit, New Africa Foundation. Unfortunately, national security halted the event just hours before it was set to commence.

Cheddar lamented that his entire investment in the program, designed to bring renowned African intellectuals to inspire the people of Ghana, was unjustifiably thwarted.

During an interview on TV3 on Thursday, January 11, 2024, the presidential hopeful stated that the event organizers received $150,000, while the remaining $150,000, potentially more, was allocated for bringing in speakers, artists, and other logistical aspects of the event.

“I am kind of confused and I trying to ask the nation, I want the nation to put themselves in my shoes. Because I’m going by the law… and I go and invest $300,000 into an event, into something that would inspire the nation and they just come and tear it down.

“… we even asked for protocol help and then paid for security and 80 policemen were assigned. But they came back the very day and started pulling everything down… I don’t know how to say it for you to understand my pain because that investment can also take care of my children,” he said.

He added, “The show itself was costing us $150,000 and then all the other logistics, bringing people in and other people who are performing and all of that, cost the rest.”

Cheddar also said that the treatment of the African leaders who were in the country to speak at his event has dented the image of Ghana.

“We brought four Africans who have spoken and spent three decades of their lives fighting for a better Africa, we brought them into Ghana to speak to the youth and to speak to the continent, the person that was behind the event is a Ghanaian… watch how all of us were attacked,” he said.

3 Nigerians nabbed for unlicensed medicine sales in Accra

The Public Health Department of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has apprehended three Nigerian nationals for purportedly trafficking aphrodisiacs and an unidentified liquid substance, which they claim is a heart cleanser.

The apprehension occurred based on a tip-off, and the individuals in question are presently in police custody, collaborating with investigators to determine the origin and composition of the substance.

Following this, they will face legal proceedings.

Initial inspections carried out by the AMA Health Department indicated that the alleged heart cleanser led to the melting of a plastic takeaway pack when applied to it, prompting concerns about potential health risks associated with the substance.

In a distinct occurrence, seven individuals captured for their purported roles in the violent assault resulting in the deaths of three individuals in Kyekyire, Afigya Kwabre South district of the Ashanti region, are slated to appear in court on Wednesday, January 10, 2024.

Eyewitnesses reported that the clash between two groups of young men resulted in fatalities and injuries.

The police arrested the seven individuals for their purported roles in the incident.

The assembly member for the Kyekyire-Kyerease electoral area, Joyce Osei Assibey, confirmed the upcoming court appearance and mentioned that residents are living in fear, with some fleeing their homes due to the incident.

Germans met to plan over together “mass deportations”

The leader of Germany, Olaf Scholz, spoke out against a meeting where they talked about sending millions of people out of the country because of their extreme political views.

The news in Germany reported that some politicians from the far-right AfD and neo-Nazis had a meeting at a fancy house near a lake outside Berlin.

The government talked about sending away people who aren’t German, even if they’re citizens.

Mr Scholz said nobody should be treated unfairly because of where they come from in Germany.

The Correctiv investigative outlet said that around 20 people went to a secret meeting near Potsdam, outside Berlin, in November.

Correctiv said that some important people from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) were involved, including Roland Hartwig, who is a close friend of party leader Alice Weidel.

Neo-Nazis from Germany and Austria, and at least one member of the white supremacist Generation Identity group, went to the event.

Two people from the centre-right Christian Democrats (CDU) party also took part.

A German politician was arrested after someone complained about them using a Nazi slogan.
Germany’s far-right AfD party won the first city mayor election.

Many people talked about “remigration,” which means sending people with non-German backgrounds out of Germany, even if they are citizens.

Correctiv said that people didn’t disagree with the plan in general, they just had concerns about whether it could actually work.

The AfD officially doesn’t support the idea of sending people back to their home countries. Gerrit Huy, a member of the German Parliament from the AfD, said she has believed in the idea “for years”.

She said the AfD no longer opposed dual citizenship because it would make it easier to take away a migrant’s German citizenship if they had another one.

The party told the AFP news agency that Mr Hartwig went to the conference, but said it would not change its migration policy.

Chancellor Scholz said on X (formerly Twitter): “We won’t let anyone treat people differently in our country because they are immigrants or not. ”

He warned people going to the meeting that some of them might be looked into by the domestic intelligence agency.

We can’t just say we learn from history, we have to really mean it.

Last year, a new member of the AfD party in Bavarian Parliament was arrested by police for making Nazi gestures.

The far-right party is now the second most popular in Germany, after the CDU.

Write your will if you plan to rig 2024 elections in Volta Region – Kwame Agbodza warns opponents

The Chief Whip of the Minority in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Adaklu, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has issued a caution, specifically aimed at those considering election rigging in the Volta Region.

The MP was unequivocal in his warning, advising anyone contemplating electoral manipulation to even consider preparing their wills in advance.

“Volta Region is ready to protect the ballot. Volta cannot be a crime scene in 2024 where any single life will be lost in the 2024 general elections.

“I can assure you, anybody planning, you can change the commander of the navy, IGP, in fact you can even make yourself the IGP or the army commander. If anybody comes to the Volta Region and attempts to rig the election by hurting any person, will not tell you what to do but maybe write your will and everything before you come here,” he said.

Emphasizing a dedication to peaceful elections, Agbodza made it explicit that the people of the Volta Region would not endure any encroachment on their democratic rights.

“… We shall not start any fight because of the election but if anybody comes here to start a fight, we shall complete it,” he added, details by TV3 have said.

Kwame Governs Agbodza addressed a gathering of NDC supporters in the Volta Region during the ‘Building Ghana Tour,’ organized by the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, in the region.

  • Prof Adei calls out govt over VAT on electricity bills

Prof Adei calls out govt over VAT on electricity bills

Ex-chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Prof. Stephen Adei, has expressed disapproval of the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government’s choice to implement VAT on a segment of electricity consumers in the country.

Prof. Stephen Adei argues that the imposition of VAT is counterproductive as it will inevitably impact households and businesses, subsequently affecting the government’s revenue collection through taxes.

According to reports, he suggested that the government should explore innovative methods of taxing sectors in the country that are currently undertaxed or not taxed at all.

“There’s no doubt at all people will be worse off. You’ll first focus on things that increase production and then that in turn will feed into your taxes. You should be going after the billions of uncollected property taxes and people getting away [inaudible], being exempted, not even the more important ones.

“The mines have millions of exemptions and these are the ones we should go after rather than going after the ordinary producer and consumer when it comes to electricity,” Prof. Adei is quoted to have said.

A letter from the Ministry of Finance showed that the government has been changing Value Added Tax (VAT) on a section of electricity consumers in the country.

The letter, which was signed by the Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, and addressed to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO), indicated that the VAT would be for residential customers of electricity above the maximum consumption level specified for block charges for lifeline units.

It said that VAT forms part of the implementation of the country’s Covid-29 recovery programme and should be charged starting from January 1, 2024.

“As part of the implementation of the Government’s Medium-Term Revenue Strategy and the IMF-Supported Post Covid-19 Programme for Economic Growth (PC-PEG), the implementation of VAT for residential customers of electricity above the maximum consumption level specified for block charges for lifeline units in line with Section 35 and 37 and the First Schedule (9) of Value Added Tax (VAT) Act, 2013 (ACT 870) has been scheduled for implementation, effective 1st January 2024.”

For the avoidance of doubt, VAT is still exempt for “a supply to a dwelling of electricity up to a maximum consumption level specified for block charges for lifeline units” in line with Sections 35 and 37 and the First Schedule (9) of Act 870,” the letter further clarified.

  • Colombian dating apps connected to eight US deaths

Colombian dating apps connected to eight US deaths

American travelers going to Colombia have been told not to use dating apps there because eight American tourists have died under strange circumstances in the past two months.

The US embassy in Bogota said that some people were given drugs and robbed after meeting others on these apps.

Things happened a lot in cities like Medellin, Cartagena, and Bogota where more American tourists are visiting.

Travellers should stay away from places that are remote and alone, like hotel rooms.

The embassy warned that criminals use apps to trick people into meeting them in public places like restaurants and bars. Then they hurt, steal from, and even kill their victims, sometimes the person they met.

In the last three months of 2023, the number of robberies of foreign visitors went up by 200% and deaths by 29%. Eight Americans also died between November 1st and December 31st.

One of the people hurt was Tou Ger Xiong, a 50-year-old comedian and activist from Minnesota who is Asian-American.

He went on a trip to Colombia at the end of November. While he was there, he met a woman online and went on a date with her. Unfortunately, he was then kidnapped and killed.

Xiong was kidnapped and stabbed to death more than twelve times by a group of men.

The actual number of people from other countries who were hurt by these crimes may be more than what the numbers show.

The embassy said that these crimes often don’t get reported because the victims feel ashamed and don’t want to go through with the legal process.

Those who try to stop a robbery are more likely to be killed, the warning said.

Mr Li is in charge of the government in China and is the second most important person in their political system.

He is a friend of President Xi Jinping and was chosen to be a part of parliament last year. Before that, he was in charge of the Communist Party in Shanghai, which is the largest city in the country.

During the pandemic, he was in charge of making sure that people in Shanghai stayed at home and couldn’t go out. Some people had a hard time getting food and medical help because of this.

Before the visit, Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said he is excited to welcome Mr. Li to Ireland for his first visit.

“Next year, it will be 45 years since our two countries started having diplomatic relations,” stated Mr.

“China is a very powerful country in the world, both politically and economically. I am happy that Premier Li has chosen to visit Ireland as part of his trip. ”

    Common difficulties

The leader said China is a big economic partner and a permanent member of the UN Security Council. China also has a big role in solving the world’s problems, like making peace and stopping climate change.

“I am excited for a deep and constructive discussion on topics we agree on, as well as those where we have different views. “

  • Staff departures at Gaza hospital raised “deep concern”

Staff departures at Gaza hospital raised “deep concern”

UK doctors at the only working hospital in central Gaza are worried about patients and staff because there is more fighting between Israel and Hamas nearby.

Deborah Harrington, a doctor who helps pregnant women at al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah with the British charity Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), said that because of the fighting, fewer staff have been able to work at the hospital for the past two weeks.

She said that around 600 to 700 patients are still being treated at the hospital every day, and many displaced people are staying there or nearby.

“Without enough healthcare staff, it will be a big disaster for people living in Middle Gaza,” said surgeon Nick Maynard to the BBC.

When the BBC asked the Israel Defense Forces about the reports, they said that their forces are 1. 5km (09 miles) away and there is no activity in that area.

Hospitals are specially safeguarded by international laws about humanitarian issues. Every military operation near hospitals needs to make sure that patients, doctors, and other people inside them are kept safe.

On Sunday, MAP and the International Rescue Committee (IRC) said their staff had to leave and stop working because of the Israeli military activity near the al-Aqsa Hospital.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the leader of the World Health Organization (WHO), said that they have heard worrying news about more fighting and people being told to leave near the important al-Aqsa hospital. The facility’s director made more than 600 patients and many health workers leave.

He said that al-Aqsa is the most important hospital in Gaza’s Middle Area and it needs to stay open and safe to help save lives.

“He said we can’t let it get worse. It would be wrong to do that when so many people are hurt and suffering. ”

Mr Maynard, a senior surgeon who worked at al-Aqsa’s surgical unit in Gaza for two weeks, said he and his team were instructed to leave last Friday. He spoke to the BBC from Cairo airport.

I was working on a bad injury from an explosion all day. At 3:00, I finished working and found out there was an attack on the special hospital unit. We were told to leave.

Two more doctors said they were told about something that happened in the ICU. Later, they saw pictures of a bullet in the wall of the ICU building on social media, but they didn’t see the incident happen.

The BBC couldn’t confirm the reports. When they were asked about the incident, the IDF said they did not know about an air strike related to that incident.

Another doctor, James Smith, who works with MAP, is now at al-Aqsa. He told the BBC that he heard gunshots on several days.

“He said that the sound could be heard from about 1km to 2km away and sometimes even in the hospital courtyard. ”

The UN said that there was fighting near the hospital on Tuesday.

The health ministry in Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas, said that 57 people had died and 65 had been injured and taken to al-Aqsa hospital in the last day. They didn’t give any more information.

On Wednesday, the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) reported that six people were killed in an Israeli attack on an ambulance near Deir al-Balah. Four people from the PRCS team and two others in the ambulance were killed.

The Palestinian news agency Wafa said that the attack happened near al-Aqsa hospital and a journalist was killed.

The IDF said on Thursday that they checked the information given to them and found that they did not attack the area mentioned. The IDF follows the rules of international law and does everything it can to reduce harm to civilians.

The BBC checked videos from social media that show smoke and gun noises. We couldn’t figure out who was shooting or where it was happening.

Images on social media also showed papers dropped by the IDF, which told people in some neighborhoods that they were in a “dangerous combat zone” and asked them to leave quickly to stay safe. They did not cover the area right next to al-Aqsa hospital.

The BBC asked some doctors about the leaflets, and they said they were told about them but hadn’t seen them.

Sean Casey, a person from the WHO who helps in medical emergencies, went to al-Aqsa hospital last weekend. He said the hospital is very close to needing to be evacuated.

The IDF said that they did not give a specific order to evacuate al-Aqsa.

Harrington said that two nurses who worked at al-Aqsa’s emergency room were killed in the last two weeks because of the fighting. Another staff member, who had already been forced to leave her home, had her house bombed.

Dr Smith stated that a lot of Palestinian healthcare workers feel that it’s not safe for them to return to the hospital.

“Some people I’ve talked to haven’t returned since Friday for sure. ”

He said that he and his colleagues are worried about the people still in the hospital.

“Many patients at the hospital cannot move, including the elderly, people with disabilities, babies in the neonatal unit, and those recovering from surgery. Also, there are many people who have been displaced from their homes living near the hospital. ”

A lot of really bad injuries

Three UK doctors saw very bad injuries and difficult conditions in al-Aqsa hospital.

Mr Maynard said in the surgical unit, we didn’t have water to wash our hands. “We had to use alcohol gel before doing the surgery. ”

“We didn’t have any curtains to cover the patients in the operating rooms, so we had to use makeshift gowns to keep the patients clean and free from germs. ”

“There were only a few medical tools and not many stitches for sewing,” he said.

Dr Harrington remembered working in the emergency room. There were no beds, so we had to take care of patients on the dirty and cold floor.

“At times, the patients were so far away that the oxygen tubing couldn’t reach them. ” We were inserting chest tubes in very unclean conditions, not giving patients any respect.

She said that they often don’t have morphine or other medicine to relieve pain.

“I can’t stop thinking about a child who came in really burned, their hands were clenching. ” Their head was dark like charcoal, but they were still alive and talking. “We didn’t have any morphine,” she said.

“I can’t forget the memory and the smell of being treated on the floor. ”

Dr Smith, a doctor who helps in emergencies, said that a lot of patients came in with very bad injuries like burns, losing body parts, and deep cuts from shrapnel.

We saw people who had lost their limbs in accidents. I saw a one-year-old child who had two arms cut off and the other two were really hurt.

The UN’s OCHA said that there were heavy Israeli attacks from the air, land, and sea in many parts of Gaza on Tuesday, especially in the Deir al-Balah southern Khan Younis areas.

“The attacks in these areas are causing many people to die and get hurt, and it’s having very bad effects on tens of thousands of civilians. Many of them had already moved to southern Gaza for safety,” it cautioned.

Israel is fighting in Gaza to get rid of Hamas and rescue people that they have taken.

It says it tries to keep civilians safe and blames Hamas for hiding fighters among them.

The war started when Hamas fighters from Gaza attacked southern Israel on 7 October. At least 1,300 people, mostly civilians, were killed and 240 were taken hostage.

More than 23,350 people, mostly children and women, have been killed in Gaza in the past 13 weeks of fighting, as reported by the health ministry run by Hamas.

Founder of #TheNewForce, Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar, has disclosed that his decision to contest the highest office of the Presidency stems from a dream he had.

In an interview with TV3, monitored by The Independent Ghana, Cheddar, noted that he had no intention, whatsoever, to contest in any of the country’s elections until he had the dream last year (2023).

“I had a dream and the dream when I woke up, I decided to first of all form a political party and then start my agenda and so it was like a calling and that calling, I realized that I had to do some work.

“So I read the Constitution and I read a little bit. I don’t know anything about politics, whatsoever. I don’t even know how to become an Assemblyman and I said that this is what I’m going to do…I went straight for the seat because that’s what God said; ‘that Go for it, it’s your time. Go for it,” he said.

This comes after the dramatic cancellation of his much anticipated event which was scheduled for January 7, 2024, to unveil him as the face behind #TheNewForce.

  • President of Ecuador challenges gangs to face the army

President of Ecuador challenges gangs to face the army

Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa has told gangs to fight the military instead of hurting civilians. Soldiers were sent to stop the gangs.

MrNoboa said there is big trouble in the Andean country because of gangs. He said this on Monday.

During a live TV show, some men with guns burst into the station and scared the workers.

Over 300 people have been arrested during the state of emergency.

Mr Noboa sounded strong and confident during a radio interview on Wednesday.

The 36-year-old president, who has been in power for only two months, stood up to the gangs. “He encouraged them to be strong and stand up against the soldiers. He pointed out that the gangs mainly attack people who are not armed or soldiers. ”

At least 14 people have been killed in the past few days. Gang members have been using bombs, burning cars, and kidnapping police officers on duty.

One hundred and twenty-five prison guards and 14 prison workers have been taken hostage by inmates, officials have confirmed. A military leader said on Wednesday that none of the hostages have been killed yet.

President Noboa said Ecuador is going through a really hard time, but he promised that his government will be strong against the gangs and anyone in the legal system who supports them.

The recent increase in attacks seems to have started when they tried to move the gang leader “Fito” from a jail he controlled to a safer prison.

However, when the police went into his room at the jail on Sunday, they saw that it was empty.

The news that he escaped caused riots in another jail. Fabricio Colón Pico, a leader of the Los Lobos gang, also escaped during the riots.

Fito, whose real name is Adolfo Macías Villareal, and Colón Pico have not been found yet. The government of Ecuador has offered a prize for any information that can help find and catch them. They are also giving prizes to 17 more gang leaders.

Ecuador used to be a safe country, but now the number of murders has gone up a lot. This happened because criminal gangs involved in drug trafficking have become stronger.

President Noboa said that 22 groups were “terrorist gangs” and stated that his country was in the middle of an “internal armed conflict”.

Ecuador’s Congress agreed on a new law that lets soldiers go out on the streets to look for weapons and people they think might have committed a crime.

The BBC’s Will Grant is in Guayaquil, the city that was most affected by the recent violence. He says the people there are still trying to understand why the gang violence happened.

A journalist who was there when the TC television studios in Guayaquil were taken over by gunmen, told an Ecuadorean news site called Primicias about how they threatened her and her coworkers.

She explained how the men with weapons told the person on TV to make a statement while the show was being broadcasted.

“They asked my coworker to say the mafia is in control and the president can’t defeat us. But she said the gunmen didn’t have any specific requests besides that. ”

The police caught the gang and arrested 18 people.

Final arguments in Trump civil fraud trial to be heard

The trial for Donald Trump‘s fraud case in New York is ending today. Both sides are giving their last arguments in court.

Trump and his two grown-up sons have been found guilty of making their properties seem much more valuable than they really are, by hundreds of millions of dollars.

They say they didn’t do anything wrong.

The trial is only looking at six specific fraud charges and how much money the Trumps have to pay if they are found guilty.

The attorney general of New York wants the judge to make Trump pay a $370 million fine for what she says are very bad plans.

Trump might not be allowed to do business in New York anymore, where he owns a lot of properties. He might also have to give up control of Trump Tower.

The judge won’t give a decision today. Judge Engoron will give it later, maybe at the end of January.

  • There would be dire consequences if Nitiwul makes any wrong move in 2024 elections – NDC

There would be dire consequences if Nitiwul makes any wrong move in 2024 elections – NDC

A National Democratic Congress (NDC) operative, James Agbey, has cautioned the Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, against any attempts to manipulate the upcoming 2024 general elections.

James Agbey asserts that the Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, would be the first to face consequences if he attempts to use security forces to intimidate voters in the upcoming 2024 elections.

According to a statement signed by James Agbey, the NDC operative expressed concern over the defence minister’s alleged threat, emphasising that such actions are contradictory to democratic norms.

He went further to interpret the purported threat as a veiled intention to employ the Armed Forces to instigate violence during the electoral process.

“The truth is, there would be dire consequences if Nitiwul and his likes make any wrong move ahead of the 2024 general elections. In fact, Nitiwul will be first to go down if he dares orchestrate election rigging and violence in the forthcoming general election.

“Some of us are ready and willing to defend our democracy. We are ready to face off with the NPP in the event that they use the armed forces to destabilise the 2024 elections,” he said in the statement.

The NDC operative called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who is also the Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, to intervene immediately and place Nitiwul on a security watch list.

He also urged the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to launch a comprehensive investigation into the video to ensure the integrity of the democratic process.

“I therefore, called on Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to immediately call Dominic Nitiwul to order and place him on a security watch list as threat to democracy ahead of the 2024 general elections.

“I also charged the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to immediately commence a comprehensive investigation into the Nitiwul Video with a view to nipping this ugly trend in the bud,” the statement added.

The NDC operative remained resolute, stating that the NDC is firm in its bid to take over power in the 2024 elections, citing the support of the majority of Ghanaians for the return of the NDC to government.

Agbey warned against any collaboration between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and elements within the Armed Forces to disrupt the electoral process.

“Let it be on record that whether Nitiwul likes it or not, the NDC will surely take over power in 2024. For emphasis, the majority of Ghanaians are insisting on the return of the NDC to government in 2024, and there’s nothing that is going to stop the momentum that’s building in that regard. The NPP dare not connive with rogue elements in the armed forces to disrupt the 2024 polls.

“As a longstanding operative for the NDC, I can boldly speak of our experiences and know-how, and our resilience to wade off any NPP undemocratic tendencies,” the statement added.

  • Mahama to scrap ‘unfair’ E-levy if elected President

Mahama to scrap ‘unfair’ E-levy if elected President

Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to eliminate the 1% electronic levy if he regains power.

He argues that the tax is unjust and hinders citizens from fully embracing the cashless society that the country has been advocating for.

John Mahama said while speaking at the University of Ghana that “it is inequitable tax, it’s not a fair tax, it prevents people from the uptake of our moving towards a cashless society and so when NDC comes, we will remove that tax. I’ve said it bluntly.”

On providing subsidies on data for students, he indicated that there is no problem with the government providing subsidies.

According to John Dramani Mahama, educational institutions should have wifi hotspots in some areas of their campuses so that they can access the internet with ease and that will help in their academics.

“I don’t see anything wrong with the government subsidizing access to wifi for public institutions like the University of Ghana and other educational institutions. There should be hotspots where you can go and stand and do data and then go back and relax.”

Russian missiles destroy a hotel in Kharkiv

Two missiles from Russia hit a hotel in Ukraine’s second biggest city, Kharkiv, and 11 people got hurt, according to the governor of Kharkiv.

Pictures from Ukraine’s State Emergency Service showed the hotel very damaged and firefighters there to help.

Governor Oleh Synehubov said that Turkish journalists were also among the injured. At around 10:30 PM, two S-300 missiles hit the target.

Russia has increased bombing in Ukrainian cities in the last two weeks.

Ukrainian leaders say many innocent people have been killed in the attacks using drones and missiles.

Kharkiv, a city close to Russia, has been badly damaged by Russian airstrikes since President Vladimir Putin started a big attack on Ukraine in February 2022.

In the most recent attack, nine people got hurt and had to go to the hospital. One of them, a 35-year-old man, was in critical condition, the governor said on the Telegram messaging service.

The mayor of the city, Ihor Terekhov, said that there were no soldiers in the hotel, only 30 regular people, according to Ukraine’s Unian news agency. It’s in the middle of the city in Kyiv. He said that many other houses and cars close by were also broken.

The city of Belgorod in Russia was attacked by missiles and drones from Ukraine on 30 December. Russian officials say 25 civilians were killed.

Russia has started sending many children from Belgorod to holiday camps that are farther away from Ukraine for three weeks. A camp in Voronejson region got 93 new people on Wednesday. Later, 280 more people arrived in Kaluga region. State TV said that teachers would go there too.

President Zelensky visited Lithuania and asked Western friends to give more weapons for air defense. The Baltic country strongly supports Ukraine in helping them resist Russian forces.

We need more air defence systems. The battle against drones. I am glad that we have deals with Lithuania and many other partners,” he said in Vilnius. Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia used to be part of the Soviet Union, but now they are in the NATO alliance.

Lithuania gives the most military aid to Ukraine compared to other countries based on their GDP, according to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy in Germany. The US gives the most help to Ukraine for their defense.

Mr Zelensky, as reported by Interfax-Ukraine, said that Vladimir Putin will continue to cause trouble until he has ruined Ukraine.

He wants to keep us very busy. Sometimes when our allies hesitate to help Ukraine with money and military support, it makes Russia feel more confident and strong.

He said the Russian leader will not stop the war until we all stop him together and cautioned that the Baltic states and Moldova could be targets next.

Recently, the leader of Ukraine has been having serious discussions with Western allies to make sure they keep getting important weapons. Kyiv’s attack last year didn’t go very well, and some people in the West are wondering if Kyiv’s plan is good, which makes them worried about the war’s cost.

Now that Russia is spending a lot more money on its military, Nato countries are having a hard time making enough artillery shells and other heavy weapons.

The European Union wants to give Ukraine €50 billion in aid, but Hungary is stopping it. And the US Congress can’t agree on giving more military aid to Ukraine.

After talking to the Ukrainian government on a video call, Nato said it would give Ukraine a lot of money to help them this year.

“Nato’s leader, Jens Stoltenberg, said that Nato is very upset about Russia attacking Ukrainian people with missiles and drones, using weapons from North Korea and Iran. “

New policy to clear ‘ghost’ names in government payroll introduced by Bawumia

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has unveiled government’s New Policy to eradicate ‘ghost’ names from public sector payroll.

Speaking at the unveiling of the National Mechanised Payroll Database by the Controller and Accountant General’s Department in Accra, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia announced a new policy aimed at cleansing the government’s payroll of ‘ghost names.’ The initiative requires all government workers to link their Ghana Card details to the payroll system.

“This linkage between the NIA database and the government payroll will significantly contribute to eliminating the incidence of ghost names on the government of Ghana’s mechanised payroll system, which has persisted for some time,” Dr Bawumia stated.

Meanwhile, the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng in November 2023 hinted that his outfit, Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) will conduct an investigation and corruption risk analysis into the government’s payroll, Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), state lands, stool lands and other state properties.

Garden centre gives Ukraine its fifth ambulance

A garden centre in Cumbria has sent its fifth ambulance to Ukraine since Russia invaded the country.

Since 2022, the Pot Place, a garden centre in Plumpton, has been bringing ambulances and medical supplies to the country.

Paul Thomas, who owns the garden centre, said that ambulances in the country only last about six months because of the bad roads.

The company recently got a new vehicle, and Mr Thomas and his team drove it to the border between Ukraine and Poland.

“He said we planned to meet the people from the Lviv Ambulance Service. ”

Since the war started, the Pot Place has given five ambulances, four paramedic motorcycles, a 4X4 evacuation car, and medicine.

“We found another ambulance and hope to bring it over there early next year,” Mr.

Donations help pay for the vehicles and medical supplies, and the money made at the garden centre is used to send them to Ukraine.

One person who works here, Kateryna Karabadzhak, is from Ukraine. She is currently in the country to spend time with her family.

She said that every night when you go to bed, you are hoping for something good.

  • Afriyie Ankrah expresses doubt about NPP winning 2024 elections fairly

Former Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has cast doubt on the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) capability to secure victory in the upcoming 2024 general elections through lawful methods.

Mr. Ankrah claimed that the NPP would resort to unfair tactics, including bribery and state-sponsored violence, to ensure victory in the upcoming elections.

During an interview on Accra 100.5 FM’s Citizen’s Show hosted by Nana Bobie Ansah on January 10, 2024, Mr Elvis Ankrah expressed doubts about the NPP’s electoral prospects. He suggested that their potential success might involve vote-buying practices and alleged violence against voters, similar to incidents observed during the 2020 general elections.

Mr. Ankrah foresaw challenges for the NPP in securing 45 percent of the total votes. He attributed this potential struggle to what he described as the party’s poor performance over the past seven years and allegations of corruption and nepotism within its ranks.

He also expressed criticism towards the judgment of the 2020 Elections Petition, where the challenge by former President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC against the election results, which declared President Nana Akufo-Addo as the validly elected president, was dismissed.

He characterized the decision of the Supreme Court as a ‘political judgment’ and accused the court of failing the nation.

Despite his respect for the judiciary, Mr. Ankrah claimed that the Supreme Court’s ruling did a disservice to Ghana, insisting that the 2020 elections should have gone to a run-off, given the NDC’s majority in Parliament.

In summary, Afriyie Ankrah cast doubt on the NPP’s ability to win the 2024 elections legitimately, citing concerns about alleged electoral misconduct, corruption, and dissatisfaction with the party’s performance in the run-up to the 2024 elections.

  • Nine apprehended for building illegal synagogue tunnel in New York

Nine apprehended for building illegal synagogue tunnel in New York

Nine people from a Jewish community in New York were arrested and charged because they built a secret tunnel that connected to an old synagogue.

They clashed with the police when city officials and Chabad-Lubavitch leaders tried to shut down the tunnel.

The men are accused of causing damage, putting people in danger, and getting in the way of the government’s work.

A representative for the Chabad said that they are a “group of extreme students”.

The tunnels were made under a big street in Brooklyn, where the Chabad-Lubavitch headquarters are. The building is very important to the Jewish community in the city.

City inspectors went to the Chabad on Monday to check if the building was safe. It was an emergency inspection. Many people were worried that the secret tunnel might have harmed the well-known building.

A fight started after the police found some young men stopping the inspection and cement filling of the tunnel. Some of the men smashed through the wall of the prayer area. Those actions caused the police to take people into custody.

Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky, who leads the Chabad, said thank you to the police for helping and said the community was sad about the vandalism done by a group of troublemakers.

“He said they will look into these terrible actions, and make the synagogue safe again. ”

We don’t know who made the tunnel, how it was made, or why they made it. It looks like the tunnel connects to at least one other building on the street in Brooklyn.

One person from the area told the New York Times that the men wanted to build the tunnel to make the synagogue bigger more quickly.

Some people who have gone to events at the Chabad have said that the building has been too crowded in the last few years.

Videos and pictures from inside the building on Monday showed a few young men trying to stop the tunnel from getting filled with cement.

Some people were taking wood panels off the walls and using benches to stop the police in the videos and pictures. The BBC watched a video that showed a police officer using spray to stop a fight from getting worse.

The building used to be where Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the leader of the Orthodox Jewish movement, lived. Many people visit it every year.

The rabbi is praised for guiding and bringing new life to the Hasidic religious community called Chabad-Lubavitch after it was hurt in the Holocaust. He passed away in 1994, but his headquarters is still a famous place for the Jewish religion.

The Chabad-Lubavitcher movement is big and wants to welcome all Jews, no matter how religious they are. But there are also important groups inside the movement. The arguments between different groups seemed to have caused problems in the tunnel dispute at 770 Eastern Parkway this month.

A small group of very religious people in the Chabad think Rabbi Schneerson is the Jewish Messiah, but most people in the Chabad don’t agree with this idea. The argument is said to be part of the fight in the tunnel.

The building is closed because the tunnels are still being inspected.

  • Five things to remember from Haley-DeSantis debate

Five things to remember from Haley-DeSantis debate

Republican presidential candidates Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley had a heated debate on Wednesday, arguing with each other just before the Iowa caucuses.

Donald Trump, the top candidate for the party’s 2024 nomination, decided not to go to an event and instead did a town hall on Fox News at the same time.

Iowa is the first state to hold a contest to pick the Republican candidate who will likely run against Democratic President Joe Biden in the November general election.

Mr DeSantis and Ms. Haley are not doing well in the Iowa polls compared to Mr. They are hoping that if they come in second place in the state on Monday, it will help their campaigns.

A brief overview of the Republican primaries in the United States.

This is what we found out when they competed on stage in Des Moines.

    1) Both candidates did not hold back.

The two people started arguing right away by saying mean things to each other.

Mr DeSantis, who is 45 years old, started the event by calling his opponent a “dishonest politician who says what people want to hear. ”

Ms Haley responded quickly and accused Mr. DeSantis of telling many “lies”.

“She said you’ll learn about many lies Ron told. ”

There have been four Republican debates before this one, but this one was different because it was just between two people. It was hosted by CNN at Drake University and there were a lot of direct attacks and arguments.

Both of them wanted to win before the Republican voters in Iowa choose their favorite candidate on Monday. The main idea of the night. Keep attacking

    2) They investigated Trump’s past actions.

As the two people running for president argued on stage, the old president was having a gathering with his followers three miles (5km) away.

It was no surprise that people started asking where he was and talking about how he was winning in the polls during the debate. DeSantis said the former president was focused on his own problems and not on helping American families.

He said Mr. Trump said a lot of nonsense on social media and made people unsure if he can handle the legal problems he is dealing with.

Ms Haley once again said she doesn’t think Mr. Trump is the right president to continue.

Both of them spoke more strongly against him than before, criticizing how he dealt with things like the pandemic, border security, and relations with China.

At his own event in Des Moines, Mr. Trump criticized both candidates and bragged about the high levels of support he has in Iowa.

Also, his campaign sent many emails criticizing Ms. Haley and Mr. DeSantis during the debate. They talked about Ms. Haley’s foreign policy and Mr. DeSantis’ record on Covid.

    3) They disagreed about immigration.

Border security and immigration were brought up many times, showing that it is a main concern for Republican voters in Iowa and the US.

Mr DeSantis told the people not to believe Ms Haley when it comes to immigration.

“He said it’s like letting the fox watch over the henhouse,” as he pointed to her earlier comments about calling “illegal aliens” disrespectful.

Ms Haley talked in a more detailed way about the reasons why people move from Central and South America and mentioned her experience as a former ambassador to the United Nations.

However, she did say that people who are in the country illegally should be sent back because they didn’t wait their turn.

    4) Ukraine was a place where there was a lot of tension.

The fight in Ukraine was a big problem during the debate, and both candidates argued about their views on the war.

Ms Haley criticized Mr. DeSantis for first supporting US money for Ukraine, and then changing his mind.

“He doesn’t tell anyone what he believes,” she said.

“Let me explain why Ukraine is important. ” “This country loves freedom,” she said. “It’s a friend of America and wants to prevent war with US support. ”

Mr DeSantis said that the war needed to stop, and he thinks that people like Nikki Haley care more about Ukraine’s border than our border in the south.

The fighting in Ukraine shows a bigger division in the Republican Party. They can’t agree on what the US should do about foreign policy and helping Ukraine.

    5) DeSantis received more applause, but Haley said she won.

About 200 people were at the event in Des Moines. They were not very loud, but Mr. DeSantis got more applause than anyone else.

Some of his comments, like when he said Ms. Haley has a problem with shooting herself in the foot, got a good reaction from the people in the room.

This is not surprising because Iowa is seen as better for him than other states like New Hampshire, where Nikki Haley is expected to do well in the second Republican contest.

Ms Haley had some memorable moments and got a big cheer when she talked about the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021 as a “bad day”.

Later, her team and supporters said they saw the event as a win that will help her in the New Hampshire primary.

“Tonight went well,” said the congressman from Texas. Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley, who are running for president, had a heated debate on Wednesday before the Iowa caucuses. They argued with each other.

Donald Trump, who is leading in the race to be the party’s nominee for 2024, decided not to go to an event and instead had a town hall on Fox News at the same time.

Iowa is the first state to hold a contest to decide which Republican will run for president against Democrat Joe Biden in November.

Mr DeSantis and Ms. Haley are not doing well in the Iowa polls compared to Mr. They are hoping to come in second place in the state on Monday to give their campaigns a boost.

A short guide to choosing the US Republican candidate.

This is what we found out when they competed on the stage in Des Moines.

The two people started arguing right away by saying mean things to each other.

Mr DeSantis, who is 45 years old, started by saying that his opponent is a politician who says what people want to hear but doesn’t mean it.

Ms Haley then responded and directly criticized what she said were Mr DeSantis’s frequent false statements.

She said you will learn about many lies that Ron has told.

There were four Republican debates before this one. But, this one was different because it was just two people debating. It was hosted by CNN at Drake University and the candidates had more arguments and direct attacks.

It looked like both were trying to win big before the Republicans in Iowa start the next part of the race and choose their favorite presidential candidate on Monday. The theme for the night is “attack, attack, attack”.

  • OEC trade data shows how Ghana spent $349m on importing toilet paper in 3 years

OEC trade data shows how Ghana spent $349m on importing toilet paper in 3 years

Over the years, Ghana has consistently been identified as a nation heavily reliant on imported goods.

Ghana imports various essential commodities, including toothpicks, toilet paper, rice, ceramic tiles, tomatoes, sugar, poultry, and bottled water.

While some question the duration of reliance on imports, others argue that these goods are necessary to supplement local production and prevent shortages.

According to the recent OEC trade statistics report, Ghana expended approximately $349 million on the importation of toilet paper.

This amount was spent between 2017 to 2021.

The report highlighted that Ghana’s average import bill on toilet paper stood at about $70 million annually.

In a chart shared by Joy News and sighted by GhanaWeb Business, a total of $101 million was used to import toilet paper in 2017.

In 2018, it moved to $97 million while in 2019, it reduced to $58 million.

Then in the year 2020, the bill stood at $51 million and in 2021, $42 million.

  • Police in Australia thwart an alleged rapper murder plot

Police in Australia thwart an alleged rapper murder plot

The police in Australia have accused two men of planning to harm four members of the rap group OneFour.

The two men, known as Brandon Maseuli and Yousef Rima, are part of a criminal group that started in Lebanon and operates internationally.

The police said the group accepts jobs to do dangerous things like killing people and taking others.

Maseuli, 26, and Rima, 20, were arrested in Sydney on Thursday and now have to deal with a number of charges.

They did things like planning to kill someone, taking someone away, leading a group of criminals, and doing illegal things with drugs and stealing.

Officials have requested permission to arrest a 22-year-old man who they think is in another country.

The police said that Maseuli and Rima planned to kill four important men in Sydney for someone else.

Four members of the drill rap group OneFour have been named as the targets. Their names are Jerome “J Emz” Misa, Pio “YP” Misa, Spencer “Spenny” Magalogo and Dahcell “Celly” Ramos. It’s not clear why they didn’t go after the fifth member, Salec “Lekks” Su’a.

The OneFour members were targeted because they had a problem with another group. This other group may have hired a criminal gang in Sydney to hurt the rappers. The police told the Sydney Morning Herald about this.

The police found out about the suspected plan while looking into the Sydney group that Maseuli and Rima belong to. They also say that it was connected to many kidnappings, including one involving a large amount of cocaine.

Both people accused of a crime went to court in Liverpool on Thursday. They were not allowed to leave jail until their trial.

OneFour, a popular rap group from Australia, has had many encounters with the police. Their songs often have sad and aggressive words, which the police say can make people want to act violently.

They had to stop a big trip around the country in 2019 because the police were worried about safety.

Immigration Service could not prove Shalimar did something wrong – Cheddar

Founder of New Force Movement, Nana Kwame Bediako, has asserted that the Ghana Immigration Service failed to produce the alleged forged documents of spokesperson Shalimar Abbiusi, who has been repatriated to her home country Belgium.

“The Ghana Immigration Service could not provide the forged documents of Shalimar Abbisusi,” Nana Kwame Bediako said on TV3 Thursday, January 11.

The Ghana Immigration Service canceled her residence permit and commenced procedures for her repatriation, after featuring in a series of videos about the NewForce.

Prosecutors charged her with obtaining a Ghanaian student permit through false declaration, but she pleaded not guilty.

In court on Tuesday, December 19, the state dropped the charges against her after Assistant Commissioner Adolf Aboagye Asensu informed the court that he had been instructed to withdraw the charges.

“We thought that our message was more important than the messenger. Had you not noticed, we wore a mask? The New Force is a grassroots movement that stands for the renewal and rejuvenation for the people of Ghana. A young woman named Shalimar Abbiusi (Shallie), distinguished for her role as a TV presenter and for her compassion to the plight of Ghanaians, saw this movement and volunteered herself as our lead spokesperson.

“She was not born in Ghana; she chose to come here. She understood the preoccupation that her race might have, as one of our spokespeople. Accepting the possibility of public rejection, she was welcomed with open arms, into our community.Where we saw genuine, heartfelt support for our people, others saw subterfuge.

“Consequently, The New Force, express our profound regret for the reported instances of; abuse faced by Shallie, unwarranted detention for up to seven (7) days, the unwarranted search, and ransacking of her home. The movement acknowledges the strain on her family and sympathizes with their aggrieved feelings over reported gross misconduct and malpractice by trusted officials. Shallie has since returned to the Kingdom of Belgium.

“The New Force stands for the empowerment of people. Therefore, it deeply saddens us, hearing the unsettling circumstances and experiences she had. Shallie’s impeccable conduct is a reminder to the international community about the importance of fully embracing human rights laws, democracy, justice, the presumption of innocence and the burden of proof even in difficult circumstances. An honourable life is not lived without friction.

“We apologise for the disregard of international human rights laws in our Republic of Ghana. In a gesture of accountability, we extend apologies to the Kingdom of Belgium, the EU committee and the international community at large. We hope that you do not retaliate in kind. We hope that Ghana reconsiders their reported misuse of power for political interests and realigns herself with a robust legal framework that preserves our global standing as a country of justice and peace. To us, the integrity of our country and its international reputation is more important than partisan political interest,”a statement issued said.

  • Investigation into human trafficking over discovery of migrants in shipping container

Investigation into human trafficking over discovery of migrants in shipping container

The police in Ireland are looking into human trafficking after finding 14 people in a shipping container in County Wexford.

The finding happened at Rosslare Europort at 03:00 on Monday morning when the trailer came off a ferry from Zeebrugge.

The Irish police were warned ahead of time by the UK authorities.

A plan was made before they came.

The nine men, three women, and two girls have been checked by doctors and are feeling fine.

RTÉ, an Irish TV station, said they have people from Iran, Iraq, Vietnam, and Turkey.

The police in Cornwall got a call for help from a Kurdish woman who was in a container on the ship. The captain told the crew to search the ship. This was reported by RTÉ.

The migrants are being looked after by a group called International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) and Ireland’s child and family agency Tusla is also helping.

The police in Wexford are leading the investigation with help from the Garda National Immigration Bureau.

They are working with the police and customs in the UK, France, and Belgium, as well as Europol and Interpol.

The police are talking to the migrants with the help of translators.

They are trying to figure out how they got inside the cold container.

It was placed in the south of Paris and then driven to the port in Belgium.

RTÉ said they think someone made a hole in the trailer to get oxygen.

A police spokesperson said that the nine men, three women, and two girls were all feeling well.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said that people can either ask to stay in the country as refugees or leave on their own.

“We always check to make sure they are okay first. It seems like they are alive and doing well,” he said.

Our next step is to help them go back home if they want to.

“If they want to apply for asylum, they have the right to do so and we will do our best to review their application quickly. “

  • Zambians advised to evacuate their towns to stop deadly cholera

Zambians advised to evacuate their towns to stop deadly cholera

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema wants people to move from cities to small towns because about 300 people have died from a cholera outbreak.

He said that in some crowded cities with dirty conditions, cholera could easily spread.

MrHichilema said that to reduce traffic in big cities, people should move to the countryside where there is plenty of room and very good cleanliness.

Over 7,500 people have gotten sick from cholera since last October all over the country.

The health ministry said that in the past day, there were over 500 new cases of the sickness and 17 people died.

Schools will open later than planned to help keep everyone safe.

The sickness has spread to eight out of the ten areas in Zambia.

The World Health Organization (WHO) will send one million doses of cholera vaccine soon to try to control the outbreak.

On Wednesday, Mr Hichilema went to the Heroes Stadium Cholera Treatment Center in the city of Lusaka. There are over 1,000 sick people there.

He said the government would take difficult measures to get rid of the disease that spreads through water.

He seemed to be blaming Zambians who moved to towns without a clear goal for causing badly planned neighborhoods to spring up.

The president said that some young people were not doing anything in towns and should move to rural areas to work on farms instead.

“There is a lot of land in the villages and clean water. ” “We can make good houses in the villages that are clean,” Mr Hichilema said.

The government plans to improve the old slums and stop new ones from forming in towns.

Mozambique and Zimbabwe are watching the borders more carefully to stop the spread of the virus between their countries.

For many months, Zimbabwe has been trying to stop cholera from spreading because there is not enough clean water in the country.

The sickness caused by bacteria can spread from dirty water or food, and makes people very thirsty from throwing up and having diarrhea. It can cause death in just a few hours if not treated.

  • South Africa’s genocide case against Israel to be heard by UN court

South Africa’s genocide case against Israel to be heard by UN court

The UN’s court is listening to a case from South Africa. They are saying that Israel is doing terrible things to Palestinians in Gaza.

The request also asks the court to tell Israel to stop fighting in that area.

The ICJ will only give their view on the genocide claim because it’s not a criminal trial. But many people are paying close attention to it.

Israel strongly denied the accusation as “baseless”.

On Thursday, there was a lot of anger outside the ICJ’s Peace Palace as Dutch police tried to keep Palestinian and Israeli supporters from fighting.

Many people holding flags from Palestine came together outside the ICJ, asking for fighting to stop. Israeli supporters put up a screen to display pictures of some of the hostages still being held in Gaza.

South Africa will explain its side on Thursday and Israel will give its side on Friday.

South Africa says that Israel is trying to destroy many Palestinians.

Israel is doing things that hurt and kill people in Gaza, and it’s making their lives very hard.

The court wants Israel to stop all fighting in Gaza right away.

The ICJ is an important court for the United Nations, located in the Hague, Netherlands. The decisions of the ICJ are supposed to be followed by countries like Israel and South Africa, but they don’t have to follow them if they don’t want to.

In 2022, the court told Russia to stop fighting in Ukraine right away, but they didn’t listen.

In the law of the world, genocide means doing something on purpose to destroy a group of people because of their nationality, race, or religion.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is different from the International Criminal Court (ICC). It doesn’t have the power to put people on trial for things like genocide. But its decisions are important to the United Nations and other global organizations.

On Wednesday, the president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, said that his country is strongly against the killing of people in Gaza and is taking the matter to the ICJ.

The President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, said the accusations were terrible and ridiculous.

“We will go to the International Court of Justice and proudly present our case for using self-defense under humanitarian law,” he said.

He said the Israeli army is working very hard in difficult situations to avoid causing harm to innocent people.

The ICJ might decide soon on South Africa’s request for Israel to stop its military actions. But it could take a long time for a final decision on whether Israel is committing genocide.

William Schabas, an international law professor who led a UN committee looking into Israel’s fight with Hamas in 2014, said it is easy for the court to order Israel to stop.

He told the BBC that South Africa must show evidence to support its argument in court, but it doesn’t mean the court will decide if genocide is happening or not.

South Africa is very upset about Israel’s military operation in Gaza and the African National Congress has always supported the Palestinian cause.

It relates to its fight against apartheid, which was a system in South Africa where the white minority government discriminated against the black majority until 1994.

In Gaza, over 23,350 people have died since the war started after Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7th, according to the health ministry run by Hamas. In the attacks, about 1,300 people, mostly civilians, were killed and around 240 people were taken hostage.

CDD-Ghana calls for ‘aggressive attack’ on vote buyers, vote sellers

Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has urged authorities to take decisive action against the menace of vote buying and selling ahead of the upcoming elections.

Speaking to the media, the organization emphasized the need for an “aggressive attack” on these practices to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.

Director of Programmes and Policy Engagement at the Centre for Democratic Development-Ghana (CDD-Ghana), Dr Kojo Pumpuni Asante, in an interview on January 10, 2024 said: “I think that the sooner we jail both the sellers and the buyers of votes, the better it will be for us. Everybody can tell now that people just do it with impunity.

“They do it in the open, there are a lot of willing takers, people willing to sell their votes, and I think if we don’t stop this behaviour, we’re continuously trying to de-legitimize the democratic process.”

Dr. Kojo Pumpuni Asante added that an aggressive approach is needed to deal with the menace.

“When something is tainted and corrupted, it’s obvious. So, we have to attack it with all the aggression that we need. I am hoping that at least somebody gets jailed; not just the political actors but also the people who are receiving the money; because if that doesn’t happen then people will still think that there’s no accountability; you can do it with impunity and get away.”

In a recent development, the Office of the Special Prosecutor, already investigating allegations against public officials, reportedly arrested Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, the Chief Executive of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), for allegedly distributing money to delegates ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s Parliamentary primaries.

  • At least 15 dead after deadly riots and looting in Papua New Guinea

At least 15 dead after deadly riots and looting in Papua New Guinea

At least 15 people have died in big fights in Papua New Guinea, and a 14-day state of emergency was declared.

Prime Minister James Marape said on Thursday that more than 1,000 troops are ready to help wherever they are needed.

Stores and cars were burned and supermarkets were robbed, because police went on strike on Wednesday because they were not happy with their pay.

This comes after more problems in the country with prices going up and not many jobs available.

“Mr Marape said in a speech to the nation on Thursday that breaking the law doesn’t lead to the results you want. ”

By Wednesday evening, the violence had calmed down because soldiers and police started working again. But the prime minister said that things were still not calm.

Port Moresby General Hospital said 8 people died in the city and 7 people died in the city of Lae.

People from the outskirts of the capital city started to steal from shops and cause more damage because there were no police around, according to locals who spoke to the BBC.

“We have seen a lot of fighting in our city, something that has never happened before in the history of our city and our country,” National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop said in a radio talk on Wednesday, according to a Reuters report.

He said that most of the looting was done by people who were taking advantage of the situation. The police also used violence during the demonstration.

The police and other public workers got upset and went on strike outside parliament because they found out their pay had been cut by up to 50% in their recent paychecks.

Mr Marape said that the pay cut was a mistake caused by a computer problem. It took up to $100 (£78) from the paychecks of public servants. He said they will fix the mistake in next month’s payments.

However, many protesters did not agree with this response. Some of them then attempted to enter the parliament building. There are videos showing people setting a car on fire outside the prime minister’s home and breaking through a gate.

Many people on social media said that the government was raising income taxes, but the government said this was not true.

Mr Marape said that wrong information spread on social media and people used the opportunity of police not being around.

Maholopa Laveil, who lives in Port Moresby, told the BBC that some people took advantage of the situation and robbed the city. They set fire to many buildings and small stores and also stole cars. The most violence happened during the day.

“We were really scared for the people working in the shopping centers and offices. The people attacking and entering the shops seemed very happy and excited,” he said.

Mr Laveil, an economics teacher at the University of Papua New Guinea, also mentioned that many of the people stealing things seem to be from the poorer areas outside the city.

“They arrived when they found out the police were not controlling the city anymore. ”

“These neighborhoods have a lot of poor people who don’t have jobs and who commit a lot of crime and chaos in the city. ” A lot of people who don’t have a job are struggling because prices are going up. They are going to shops nearby to try and get what they need.

Ambulance workers said they helped many people hurt in a shooting, and the US embassy said there were gunshots near its building.

The Chinese embassy has told the PNG government that some Chinese businesses were attacked and two Chinese people were hurt.

“The Chinese Embassy in Papua New Guinea has complained to the government of Papua New Guinea about the attacks on Chinese-owned shops,” the embassy said on WeChat.

The prime minister is under a lot of pressure from different groups in society because the country’s economy is not doing well. There are more inflation and unemployment rates.

The other political party is preparing to vote to say they don’t trust Mr. It will happen in February.

“Many families are struggling, there is more unfairness in cities, especially in the main city, and there are more places where people live and a lot of crime,” Mr. Laveil explained

“All of those things together caused a really bad situation. “

Nigerian troops detained after widely sharing torture video

The Nigerian army caught two soldiers who were seen in a viral video hurting a civilian.

In the video, a man in military clothes and another in regular clothes keep hitting and whipping a third man who is shirtless. The man being hurt keeps asking them to stop.

“Please, sir, no. I beg you. ” “Sir, please, I admit it. ” the man begs.

The army is very unhappy with how the officers have been acting.

The army said on Wednesday that the soldiers who acted unprofessionally have been found and taken into custody.

The attack happened in Rivers state, Nigeria, but we don’t know when.

The video of soldiers behaving badly on social media upset a lot of people. One person said the soldiers were being very cruel and using their power in a bad way.

The army will look into the incident and punish anyone involved.

International human rights organizations have previously spoken out against the Nigerian army for mistreating people and doing things like torture, arresting people for no reason, and killing people without a fair trial.

  • I paid GHS30k for use of Independence Square not GHS10k – Cheddar

I paid GHS30k for use of Independence Square not GHS10k – Cheddar

Ghanaian business mogul, Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Freedom Jacob Caesar or Cheddar has pointed out what he says are inconsistencies in the response from the government regarding his much anticipated programme, The Convention, which was eventually canceled.

The programme was scheduled to take place on Sunday, January 7, 2024, however, it was abruptly canceled a few hours to its commencement.

A statement was subsequently issued from the Diaspora Affairs Directorate of the Office of the President, explaining circumstances that resulted in the sudden cancellation of the programme.

“We write to revoke immediately the permission granted per our letter No.OP/PH/02 dated November 11, 2024, which approved your request to use the Black Star Square for the above event.

“This decision has been necessitated by an unforeseen State Event scheduled to take place at the venue,” portions of the statement read.

Government also indicated in the statement that it will refund an amount of GHS10,000 paid by Cheddar to the Diaspora Affairs.

Contrary to details in a statement, Cheddar noted that he paid GHS30,000 to the Presidency and not GHS10,000.

“First of all the receipt that we got is GHS30,000 so if the government is showing GHS10,000, it’s minus two-thirds,” he said.

Feeling shortchanged, he questioned the rationale for the part payment of the money.

“Is this how the whole country behaves in everything that we do? With our taxes, with everything that we do?

However, per Cheddar’s further explanations, he was charged for six days, which according to him, included four days which will be used to set up the Independence Square and also, a day for clearing the Independence after the event.

In a document dated 15th November purported to be a receipt issued by the Diaspora Affairs Directorate of the Office of the President, the directorate acknowledged receipt of payment for the Black Stars Square Venue to be used for a programme from the 2nd January to the 8th January 2024.

Payment details are as follows: “Use of Venue 5000 a day for 6 days = GHS 30,000.” Service charge was waived, however, the Directorate indicated that if any other costs are necessary to be made, Cheddar will be duly informed.

Cheddar said the cancellation of the event has left him frustrated.

  • Swedish defense officials warn citizens to get ready for war

Swedish defense officials warn citizens to get ready for war

Two important defense officials have told Swedes to get ready for war, which has made some people worried and accused them of being too dramatic.

Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin said at a conference that a war could happen in Sweden.

The military leader, Gen Micael Byden, agrees with the message and thinks all Swedes should get ready in their minds for the possibility.

However, politicians who are against it have disagreed with how the warnings were given.

Former prime minister Magdalena Andersson said on Swedish TV that the security situation is serious, but war is not about to happen right now.

The kids’ rights group Bris said that its national phone line doesn’t usually get calls about the chance of war. This week, many young people called us worried because they saw news or posts on TikTok about it.

“Bris spokeswoman Maja Dahl told the BBC that this was carefully planned and not something said without thinking. ” “They should have given information for kids when they share information for adults. ”

The comments from the civil defence minister and military chief are being seen as a strong warning, even though they were very serious.

After more than 200 years of peace, Sweden is close to joining the Nato defense alliance. It just needs approval from Turkey’s parliament and then from Hungary.

The leader said what he said was not something new.

He went to the eastern part of Ukraine a month ago. Sweden is one of the countries helping to train Ukrainian pilots. Stockholm is thinking about sending powerful Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine.

“I don’t want to scare people. I just want more people to think about their own lives and what they need to do,” said Gen Byden in an interview with Aftonbladet newspaper.

Finland is now part of Nato, and Russian officials are saying it will be the first to have problems if things get worse with Nato.

The civil defence minister of Sweden wants people to be aware of what is happening but not to worry too much. He asked local officials, emergency planners, and people to help.

MrBohlin said he can’t sleep because he thinks things are moving too slowly. He said this at the Society and Defence conference on Sunday.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, asked Sweden to work with Ukraine and other countries to make weapons and become stronger together during a conference.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said that by 2024, Sweden will spend 2% of its money on military defense, which is double the amount it spent in 2020.

Oscar Jonsson, a defence expert, said that the warnings from defence leaders were blown out of proportion and that 90% of the concerns came from frustration that not enough was being done to improve civil and military defence.

“He said that time is short and the goal was to urge agencies, people, and departments to take action,” he told the media.

“The Swedish military is very skilled, but it is not very large. ” The new defence bill says we need to create 3. 5 military units, but Ukraine had 28 when the war began.

General Byden is telling people to get ready for war, and this comes right after another warning from the head of Poland’s National Security Bureau, Jacek Siewiera, who said that to avoid a war with Russia, countries near Nato should start getting ready for a confrontation within the next three years.

He said that a report from a German group about preparing for a Russian attack in six years was too hopeful.

Oscar Jonsson, an expert from the Swedish Defence University, said that for a war to happen, a few things would need to happen first: Russia’s war in Ukraine would need to stop, its military would need time to get stronger again, and Europe would need to not have support from the US military.

He said that everything was possible.
