A legal case is taking place in Virginia to determine if frozen embryos can be considered as property and assigned a monetary worth.
Judge Dontae Bugg from the Fairfax County Circuit Court listened to arguments on Thursday from a divorced couple. They are fighting about whether the ex-wife can use two embryos they made when they were married.
Honeyhline Heidemann says the embryos are her last hope to have a baby that is biologically hers after cancer treatment made her unable to have children. Jason Heidemann does not want to have a child biologically.
Last year, a judge named Richard Gardiner made a decision that got a lot of attention. He said that embryos could be seen as property, like things you can buy or sell. He based his decision partly on a law from the 1800s about how to treat slaves.
Gardiner is not working on the case anymore, but it’s not because he mentioned slavery as an example.
Reproductive rights activists are worried about a ruling from the Alabama Supreme Court that says embryos could be treated as children under the law.
There are not many established court decisions in Virginia about how embryos should be treated.
Honeyhline Heidemann’s lawsuit was filed under a law that decides how property is divided between people who are involved.
Jason Heidemann’s lawyer, Carrie Patterson, said there’s no previous example for this because the law isn’t made for dealing with embryos. She said its main job is to control how real estate is divided.
The law about embryos across the country says they are not just something you own. They have special qualities that courts need to consider when deciding who gets them.
When a judge looks at these cases, they have to think about a person’s right to choose to have children. In this situation, Patterson said her client really doesn’t want to have kids without wanting to.
Honeyhline’s Heidemann’s lawyer, Jason Zellman, said the rule about dividing property applies if the embryos are considered as things that can be bought or sold.
The papers that both Heidemanns signed with the IVF provider say that the embryos are like belongings. This means their worth can be measured based on how much it cost to make them.
Because there are two babies, he said, the judge can easily split the property by giving one baby to each person.
Bugg said he will make a decision later. He has concerns about putting a money value on the embryos.
Zellman agreed that the case has some new problems, but he also told the judge that it doesn’t need to be a big deal or set any new rules. He said that the special details of the Heidemanns’ situation, such as the agreement in their divorce papers that the embryos stay frozen until a judge decides, will make their case different from others in the future.

Boeing 737 at an airport in Senegal catches fire and goes off runway

Ex-Memphis police officer accused of kidnapping and killing a person

The prosecutors said that Ferguson was working when he took a man and shot him in the head while they were inside his police car. Ferguson helped Rogers get rid of the man’s body in the Wolf River in Memphis, according to prosecutors. Rogers sold the car used to move the man’s body to a scrap metal dealer, prosecutors said.
The person who was shot was identified as R.H. by the US attorney’s office. Ferguson has already been accused of serious crimes in state court for the death of Robert Howard. Both cases have the same situation.

64 individuals detained by Ontario Provincial Police over child sex abuse

The police say that in one instance, a person arranged to meet with undercover investigators because they wanted to meet a child for a sexual reason. The police said another person had about 21 terabytes of data with pictures and videos of children being abused.
Toronto police said to CP24 that 13 people were arrested in the city and together they are facing 69 criminal charges.
Most of the investigation was done when investigators responded to complaints from electronic service providers, Brown said.

Tension in GIMPA as Rector blocks students from course registration
A standoff between students of GIMPA and their Rector, Prof Samuel Bonsu has left hundreds of students, including final-year students, unable to register for their courses this semester.
The Rector, allegedly known for his “one-man show” leadership style has reportedly closed registration refusing to engage departmental leaders and student representatives over the matter as hundreds of students remain stranded.
This move has sparked outrage among students, who are questioning the Rector’s appointment to the Education Committee of the 2024 NPP/Bawumia Manifesto Committee if his leadership of GIMPA is questionable.
Despite internet challenges in March, which led to an extension of the registration period by a week, many students who had made full payments were still unable to register. Still, the Rector is said to have closed his eyes and ears to students’ legitimate concerns.
“How can someone who refuses to show leadership simple leadership skills be part of a committee that aims to improve education?” asked a final-year student, who was unable to register and wished to remain anonymous.
“I made full payments and have been pleading for a chance to register, but all my efforts have been in vain. This is not the first tertiary institution I have attended, and I know this is not how things should be done.”

”Glory to Hong Kong” protest song currently prohibited in city of China
On Wednesday, a court agreed with the Hong Kong government and banned a well-liked protest song. This decision has raised worries about the loss of freedoms in Hong Kong, which used to be a place with lots of freedom.

South African building fire investigation that claimed 76 lives finds city authorities at fault

Israeli forces order Palestinians to leave some areas of Rafah ahead of planned attack
The Israeli army told about 100,000 Palestinians to leave the city of Rafah in Gaza on Monday. This makes it more likely that a ground attack will happen soon and makes it harder to make a deal to stop the fighting.
The upcoming operation in Rafah, where more than 1 million Palestinians are staying, has made people around the world worried. Israel’s closest friends have advised against it because they are afraid that many people could be killed. Truck driver accused of killing Utah police officer by striking him
A truck driver is accused of causing the death of a police officer during a traffic stop on a Utah highway on Sunday. He allegedly hit the officer with his truck.
A police officer and a highway patrol officer stopped a big truck at 6:30 am because someone called 911 to say they saw a person standing on the back of the truck as it was driving north on Interstate 15.
The police in Spanish Fork said that a man drove away while they were trying to stop him. Then he turned the big truck around and drove the wrong way on the highway. The big truck hit two police cars and the Santaquin officer died at the scene.
The police found out that the truck driver’s name is Michael Aaron Jayne and he is 41 years old. Police said that he has not been put into jail yet and he does not have a lawyer to speak for him.
The name of the officer who died has not been made public by the authorities.
“Our whole team is injured. ” “The officer’s family is upset because of a pointless act by one person,” said Spanish Fork police Lt Cory Slaymaker at a news conference.
The stop happened on the I-15 in Santaquin, a town with around 14,000 people, 65 miles (105 kilometers) south of Salt Lake City.

Matthias Ecke, who is running for the SPD, got hurt while hanging up posters in Dresden last Friday night, according to the party. It was said that he was brought to a hospital and needed surgery for his injuries. The police said a 41-year-old was hurt by four men. The same group had also hurt a Greens party worker on the same street just before.
Nancy Faeser, who is in charge of the country’s internal security, said that if it’s shown that the attack on Ecke was done for political reasons, it would be a big threat to our democracy.

Two Australians and one American who got missing bodies found in Mexico – Authorities

Local TV network Milenio reported that although forensic examination has not yet confirmed it, the physical characteristics such as their hair and clothing strongly suggest that the bodies found are likely those of the three tourists. An employee from the state prosecutors’ office, who cannot be named, told The Associated Press that it’s believed the bodies are being looked into.
The dead bodies were found in a well. The investigators also found another body in the same well. The authorities said they would investigate the situation.
“A fourth person was found. ” It has nothing to do with the three foreigners. The fourth body had been there for a long time, said the official.
The place where the bodies were found was close to the town of Santo Tomas. It was also near the isolated seaside area where the men’s tents and truck were found on Thursday.

He said the hunger strike will keep going until university leaders talk to students about their demands. They want to be forgiven for any crimes and punishments for protesting.
Other protestors are joining in “solidarity fasts” that go on for 24 hours, he said.
Princeton students started a protest and some stayed in a building, which led to about 15 people getting arrested.
Students at Brown and Yale, and other colleges, also went on hunger strikes earlier this year before the recent wave of protest camps.
On Saturday, the police stopped a protest at the University of Virginia. The campus police said it was a “illegal gathering” on a social media site.

British-Palestinian physician refused permission to enter France to attend Senate meeting
A renowned physician from Britain and Palestine was denied entry into France, where he intended to address the Israel-Hamas conflict.
