  • Amaarae featured by R&B legend Babyface

Ghanaian singer-songwriter Amaarae has been featured by legendary American singer-songwriter and record producer Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmondson on a new song titled ‘One Good Thing’.

The song is housed on the R&B legend’s new album called ‘Girls Night Out’ which has today’s prominent female artistes like the Zimbabwean-Australian Tkay Maidza, UK’s Ella Mai, Americans Ari Lennox and Kehlani, and others on it.

Released on Capitol Records, the 13-track long play (LP) is Babyface’s first in six years.

The cover art is inspired by urban graffiti and depicts stilettos, love symbols, ladies making up, a couple kissing with the woman’s eyes open, the album title written in pink, and in the left bottom corner is a bold image of Babyface in a flashy pink suit, wearing shades and holding out a near-full martini glass.

His work with Ama Serwah Genfi, alias Amaarae, is the 11th on the album. Lyrically, it combines English with Pidgin as it paints a toxic love picture.

On Thursday, 20 October 2022, Amaarae tweeted about the collaboration saying: “‘Waiting To Exhale’ is one of my favorite albums ever so when I got the call that Babyface wanted to work on a song with me for his ‘Girls Night Out’ album, I was honored, to say the least.”

‘Waiting to Exhale’, the famed 1995 soundtrack album for the movie of the same name, was written and produced by Babyface and featured TLC, Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Brandy, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Mary J. Blige, etc.

According to the Grammy-winning Babyface, the inspiration for the 2022 ‘Girls Night Out’ album came after his Verzuz competiton against Teddy Riley.

“I ended up getting a lot more fans through Instagram and hearing from people in a different age group that I didn’t realize were fans. I picked up new fans, as well,” Babyface he revealed to Rated R&B.

“I [wanted] to figure out how to keep writing for a generation that I wasn’t as completely attached to. Doing this record allowed me to be myself, but also allowed me to work with younger artists, hear their voices and write with them. That’s exactly what this album is — a collaboration of with these girls.”

Meanwhile, the award-winning Amaarae, according to a tweet sent out on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, is busy working on a new album: “If I you texted me and I haven’t responded I promise I will text you back after I turn in my album I’m so sorry.”

She was also featured on the soundtrack for the new Black Panther: Wakanda Forever movie. She contributed a song called ‘A Body, A Coffin’.

Last week, wearing a black slashed knit Christopher Esber dress, the ‘Sad Girlz Lo Money’ hitmaker attended the premiere of the movie at the Dolby Theatre.

Nicknamed Fountain Baby, she tweeted: “Black Panther 2 was truly an amazing movie,” a day after.

In an official statement posted on Facebook, Lynx revealed that “it has inked a deal with EMPIRE to work on the project of one of Ghana’s most commercially successful acts, Kuami Eugene.”

Lynx described the deal as a “new strategic partnership” and a “pathbreaking alliance” meant to “expand” Kuami’s “horizons” and aimed at “projecting the career of the talented and hardworking singer & songwriter on the international market.”

“Kuami Eugene’s deal emphasises the Ghana-based” Lynx Entertainment “label’s trailblazing role in the African music industry since 2007,” the statement further mentioned before indicating that the song ‘Single’, also released today, Thursday, November 3, 2022, is the first of many collaborative efforts between Lynx and EMPIRE on behalf of the Ghanaian singer and record producer Kuami Eugene.

Last month, the artiste, born Eugene Kwame Marfo, tweeted: “I try saa say I go stay, buh chaley I for leff. Suro Nipa [downcast emoji],” to wit: “I have done my best to stay but I really have to leave. Beware of human beings.”

This sparked rumours about him leaving his record company of 6-years, Lynx Entertainment.

He deleted the tweet and that same day, Monday, 17 October 2022, followed up with another: “My new family EMPIRE, EMPIRE Africa [handshake emoji],” further encouraging the rumour mill.

Speculators cited social commenter, musician and activist Kwame A-Plus’ July 2022 assertion on UTV’s United Showbiz that he had been informed Kuami Eugene had a desire to leave Lynx.

After Eugene’s cryptic tweets, he announced a new song titled ‘Single’.

    Read Lynx’s full statement below:

“Lynx Entertainment is delighted to announce that it has inked a deal with EMPIRE to work on the project of one of Ghana’s most commercially successful acts, Kuami Eugene.

“This new strategic partnership will see the 2020 Ghana Music Awards Artiste of the Year expand his horizons as he takes on the world with his music.

“Since 2021, Lynx Entertainment has been working closely with EMPIRE; a leading and innovative global label, distributor, and publisher in maximising opportunities and value for its artistes.

“Kuami Eugene’s deal emphasises the Ghana-based label’s trailblazing role in the African music industry since 2007.

“This pathbreaking alliance will aim at projecting the career of the talented and hardworking singer & songwriter on the international market.

“The coming weeks will see the BMI award-winner, Kuami Eugene, add up to his genre-bending repertoire beginning with the release of his highly anticipated song titled ‘Single’.”

Despite the statement, it is not clear who holds executive power over Eugene during “the project.”

Some industry players have said per the deal, while Lynx is the management team, EMPIRE (EMPIRE Africa) is providing record label services.

Kuami is gearing up for the release of an anticipated extended play (EP).

  • No one cautioned him against attacking me – Shatta Wale reacts to backlash in Bulldog fued

Dancehall musician Shatta Wale is not pleased about the criticisms he is facing from the public after he claimed to know his former manager Bullgod’s secret in relation to the murder of Fennec Okyere.

In a Facebook Live, the ‘Melissa’ hitmaker said that no one warned Bullgod to stop mentioning his name or refrain from talking about him when granting interviews.

“Nobody advised him. Nobody warned him about me. Me, I don’t care,” he said.

He stated that he will always retaliate when he is disrespected or hurt even by the people he considers friends.

“if I am moving with a friend and the friend wants to show me wicked, I go show him wicked (sic). If a friend respects me, I will respect him, if a friend smiles at me I will smile. If they frown, I’ll also frown.”

Shatta Wale proceeded to call on Kwaw Kese, whom Fennec Okyere used to manage to “wake up and fight for your right.”

This comes a day after Shatta Wale shocked the public when he threatened to reveal a secret Bullgod told him in relation to the death of the artiste manager.

The ‘Ayoo’ hitmaker stated that he is ready to tell any court what Bullgod told him about the murder of Fennec Okyere.

This threat was in reaction to the leakage of the list of artistes featuring on the tracks for Shatta Wale’s upcoming album, ‘Gift of God (GOG) by Bullgod.

This caught the attention of Kwaw Kese whose career Fennec Okyere managed before his passing in 2014.

Kwaw shared a screenshot of Shatta Wale’s post and called on the Police to get justice for his former manager.

The Police later released a statement noting that they were in touch with Shatta Wale and hoped to get relevant information to help find the culprit.

    Fennec Okyere’s death

Fennec Okyere, who was the manager of the controversial musician, Kwaw Kese, was murdered at his Manet Gardens residence on Spintex Road, Accra on Thursday, March 13, 2014, by unknown assailants. He died at age 31.

Following his death, Bullgod, born Lawrence Nana Asiama Hanson, was picked up by the Police Criminal Investigative Department (CID).

He was arrested in Kokomlemle, a suburb of Accra, as a suspect in the death of Fennec Okyere.

This was because Bullgod (then known as Bulldog) who had regular beefs with Fennec Okyere, had supposedly threatened him in an interview on radio.

While on the Police charge sheet Bullgod was to face the charge of conspiracy to commit murder, his plea was not taken.

In 2017, the Bullhaus Entertainment CEO was freed from the charges in relation with the alleged murder, with then Attorney-General, Gloria Akuffo saying the state was no longer interested in prosecuting Bulldog over the alleged murder of Fennec Okyere.

This was contained in the A-G’s advice on the case docket. Kwaw Kese registered his unhappiness about the development.

“Even the prosecutors were not going to court. I believe our security system is very weak,” a very disappointed Kwaw Kese told Lexis Bill in an interview on Behind the Fame on Drive Time on Joy FM in 2018.

But, Bullgod has consistently maintained that he is innocent, thus had no hand in the passing of Fennec Okyere.

According to him, the jabs they threw at each other were aimed at promoting their artistes and also to remain relevant as managers.

In a 2022 interview on Hitz FM, Bullgod maintained his innocence adding that he never threatened Fennec Okyere, despite their disagreements.

Meanwhile, Kwaw Kese, year in and year out, continues to celebrate his former manager on his death anniversary.

Meanwhile, Shatta Wale has welcomed the Police’s decision to collaborate with him in their quest to re-investigate the murder of the late artiste manager.

  • Blacko’s alleged sex tape simply a case of mistaken identity

On Thursday evening, #BlackSherif was trending on Twitter following an alleged leaked sex tape.

The musician whose career is steadily on the rise was being accused of starring in the raunchy short video in which a woman can be seen performing fellatio on him and going further to ‘ride’ him.

The supposed ‘leak’ had fans of the musician gutted.

However, after some digging on social media platform, Twitter, it appears the male vixen of the video is not Black Sherif.

Though the resemblance is uncanny, the vixen is an amateur pornstar who goes by the name LA on Twitter and the female vixen is his partner Jaz.

They have several sex videos on their respective Twitter pages where the circulating video thought to belong to Black Sherif can be found.

Some fans of the musician have accused persons insisting the male vixen is Black Sherif of attempting to pull him down.

  • Revisiting Fennec Okyere’s death: Friend recalls fond memories

Nana Yaw Kesse, a friend of the late Mr. Fennec Okyere, has recounted some fond moments of him and the late former artiste manager.

Expressing how the resuscitation of news surrounding the late Fennec’s death has sunk him into sadness, Mr. Yaw Kesse recalled past times when the deceased used to pay him random visits at his former work place.

“Sometimes, friends or family members die and with time you forget about them. Yesterday’s Fennec conversation has made me sad, all over again.

“When I used to work at Capital Bank, many people knew him because, sometimes, he would stop over to have lunch with me in our cafeteria. He wouldn’t shut up too… he will be saying all sort of funny things to crack people up. One of his favourite expressions was “oh, Joe”…Bro, I miss you and it hurts,” he wrote in a series of posts on Facebook.

He also recounted how his late friend (Fennec), introduced him to a couple of waakye joints in Accra and his dream of establishing a waakye joint never materialized.

“Fennec liked waakye. He introduced me to “Waakye Extra O” at Lapaz. One day, Fennec told me that he wanted to start selling waakye. He probably saw the befuddled look on my face and he explained…Zady, I have seen so much poverty in my life that it scares me. I’d do anything not to be poor Oh Joe,” he added.

Nana Yaw however called for justice to be served no matter how long it takes.

“May justice be served .. no matter, how long it takes,” he added.

  • President Biya gives $250,000 for repatriation of 630 Cameroonians expelled from Equatorial Guinea

The presidential intervention follows forceful and sometimes brutal expulsion of Cameroonians by the Equato-Guinean authorities.

President Paul Biya of Cameroon has authorised the release of 125 million FCFA (about US$250,000) to be used for the repatriation of an estimated 630 Cameroonians who are being forcefully expelled from Equatorial Guinea.

The presidential intervention follows forceful and sometimes brutal expulsion of Cameroonians by the Equato-Guinean authorities which began on Oct 20.

The government of Equatorial Guinea says most of those being expelled are living illegally in the country.

But some of the Cameroonians who have since succeeded in arriving home say they had their residential papers but were brutally extracted from their homes and forced to leave the country because of growing xenophobia against Cameroonians in Equatorial Guinea.

“I and my entire family were pulled out of my house and forced into a vehicle by police who abandoned us in a football field. By the time I rushed back to my house, I discovered that all my valuable belongings had been carried away by irate Equato-Guinean crowds changing anti-Cameroon slogans”, Fotso Alphonse who said he had just returned from Equatorial Guinea told HumAngle yesterday Sunday Oct 30 in Douala, Cameroon’s economic capital.

A communiqué signed Saturday October 29, 2022 by the Cameroonian ambassador in Equatorial Guinea, Desire Owona Menguele, reveals that the 125 million FCFA would be used in the repatriation of a total of 630 persons drawn from among Cameroonians who have been recently expelled as well as from among some of those who were declared illegal immigrants during a massive expulsion exercise by the Equato-Guinean authorities in November last year.

The mass repatriation exercise is scheduled to begin today, Monday October 31, 2022 with the first 52 Cameroonians, including forty-eight adults and four infants to be transported by Ethiopian Airlines from Malabo. The flight would leave Malabo the Equatorial Guinea capital at 12:30 hours and arrive Douala at 13:25 hours.

Cameroonian consular authorities in Equatorial Guinea say they would assist Cameroonians who wish to remain in the country by facilitating their acquisition of the relevant residential documents.

“For those wishing to remain on Equatorial Guinea territory, the embassy had on Oct 21, forwarded 250 dossiers to the Equatorial Guinea Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation which demanded for the dossiers with a view to regularising their situation”, the Cameroonian ambassador to Equatorial Guinea revealed.

“The mission has solicited for a three-month period of grace from the Equatorial Guinea authorities counting from the date of the delivery of the new biometric Cameroonian passports established by the consular posts of Bata and Malabo to enable their holders to regularise their situation”, Ambassador Desire Owona Menguele said.

The ambassador also revealed that thirty-one Cameroonians remain captives in the Malabo multipurpose sports complex, among whom are twenty-six men and five women.

It should be recalled that Equatorial Guinea and Gabon are the two of the six member countries of the Economic Community of Central African States, popularly known by the French acronym CEMAC, that have been flouting the CEMAC provision for free movement of goods and persons from member countries within the economic zone, by frequently expelling citizens from other member countries on flimsy excuses bordering on xenophobia.

  • I sold charcoal, porridge, beans to pay my school fees – Celestine Donkor

Gospel musician, Celestine Donkor has disclosed that she sold charcoal, porridge, beans and other foodstuffs to finance her education.

Selling on the street was a better alternative to survive the harsh economic challenges since her parents were not financially stable enough to cater for the whole family.

In an interview with Roselyn Felli on Prime Morning, the ‘Agbebolo’ hitmaker recounted that “at a point, we had to survive by ourselves at a very young age; you have to think of paying your fees.”

“So, when you come back from school, you need to think of what to sell and how to raise money for the following morning. I’ve sold corn, charcoal, ‘kookoo’ (porridge),” she recalled on Wednesday, November 2.

Over the period, Celestine Donkor said she used to wonder why her parents were alive but could not provide her basic needs.

“As a young girl, one of the prayers I constantly prayed and asked God was, ‘Why didn’t you bless my parents to take care of me? It was a prayer I always prayed in a deep place.

“I don’t understand why my parents are alive and I have to still be like an orphan in someone’s house. It is different when your parents are dead,” the celebrated singer explained.

    Music ministry

According to Celestine Donkor, she was encouraged by her husband to start producing her own songs after many years of being a backing vocalist.

She recounted a situation where her first breakthrough song ‘Supernatural’ was rejected by the church she fellowshipped with.

“…these were declarations by Dr Mensah Otabil. Every year, he releases a theme for the year, and it comes to declarations. So, it was in this year that I was praying with the declaration and I got my breakthrough.

I decided that I’d put it in a song as a gift to the church. I did not intend to release it to the public. I took it to the church, and some way, somehow, it wasn’t accepted. So somebody advised me to take it out and do a video,” she narrated.

The musician has released a new song and is set to drop an album between now and early 2023.

  • Ajax star Kudus Mohammed names his best position

Ajax midfielder, Kudus Mohammed has said that his best position on the pitch is to play as the playmaker for the team.

Despite loving to play as the skimmer behind the striker, Kudus has played the false 9 roles for Ajax since Schreuder took over as manager.

Speaking after his splendid performance against Rangers in the UEFA Champions League, the Ghanaian stated that the number 10 role is his best position.

“I still feel am best at number 10 but as I said, is for the team so in any position I find myself I try to do my best for the team but I know I am best at number 10 position.”

In the game against Rangers, Kudus scored and provided an assist to help Ajax win by 3-1 while playing as a false 9.

The 22-year-old has excelled in the role, scoring 10 goals, including 4 in the Champions League.

However, there has been an argument that Kudus‘ new role limits his potential because many believe he can offer more to the team in midfield than leading the attack.

  • ‘I’m best at number 10 position’ – Mohammed Kudus

Mohammed Kudus, a midfielder for the Black Stars who played as a false number 9 for Ajax in the 2022–2023 Ghana Premier League, has disclosed his preferred position.

Alfred Schreuder’s two strikers at Ajax this season in all competitions have been Kudus and Brian Brobbey.
Despite being the starter at the beginning of the season, Brobbey was benched in favor of Kudus, who became the center of the attack.

Following three consecutive starts off the bench, the Ghanaian made his starting debut in the UEFA Champions League victory over Rangers on Tuesday, November 1.

Speaking after his side’s 3-1 away win over Rangers, the former FC Nordjaelland star disclosed he is best at the number 10 position.

“You want to play every single game but Brobbey got the chance too and he was scoring and doing well too. He is my guy and I am happy for him but at the same time, we have healthy competition which is to push each other to do the best for the team.”

“I think it’s helping the whole team grow. There’s competition everywhere in every position so we just keep pushing each other in a positive way in training and pushing each other to the highest limit.”

“I still feel am best at number 10 but like I said, is for the team so any position I find myself I try to do my best for the team but I know I am best at number 10 position.”

There is a recent media publication on the Attorney General’s efforts at dissolving fraudulent companies, unfortunately, the facts of the matter were not accurately presented by the media organisation that reported the court case. The first significant error in the media report is misconstruing QNET for Quest Net or Q-NET Investment Limited. The name Quest Net does not refer to nor is meant to refer to QNET. They are effectively entities which are entirely separate and distinct, and with no relationship or incorporation internationally.

The company mentioned in the order given by the Accra High Court, references an unauthorized entity set up by individuals who are not in any way connected with QNET Ltd, which is an international direct selling company headquartered in Hong Kong.

It is clearly evident from the Judgment dated 20 July 2022 that the title of the case is “IN THE MATTER OF THE CORPORATE INSOLVENCY AND RESTRUCTURING ACT, 2020 (ACT 1015) AND IN THE MATTER OF A PETITION FOR THE OFFICIAL WINDING UP OF Q-NET INVESTMENT LIMITED (A COMPANY LIMITED BY LIABILITY) AND IN THE MATTER BETWEEN THE ATTORNEY GENERAL AND Q-NET INVESTMENT LIMITED.” It is thereby clear, QNET was never a party to the court action.

QNET operates its business everywhere, including Ghana, via Independent Representatives (IRs) who are properly trained and accredited individuals, and who undertake the business in compliance with best business ethics and practice.

Certain individuals acted in bad faith by registering a company called Quest Net/QNET Investment Limited in Ghana for their unlawful activities. QNET Limited had, via its lawyers in Ghana, written to the relevant authorities and placed Quest Net on notice that there is no relationship, connection or nexus of any nature with this Ghana-registered local entity and QNET Limited.

QNET, on a continuing basis, has been in touch with the relevant authorities to clarify its stand. QNET accordingly condemn the actions of these unscrupulous individuals and their bad practices which we wholly dissociate ourselves and our business dealings from.

Whenever QNET’s attention is brought to unethical or illegal actions of IRs, QNET takes punitive actions against them. This includes termination or suspension of the IR. Additionally and as required, QNET lodges complaints with the Police against IRs who commit crimes against innocent individuals.

QNET is always available to offer clarification and assistance to all authorities and the media regarding any issue about its business. QNET has also embarked on a sensitization programme called the “MAMA Campaign”, to educate the general public about QNET, its business model and the need to be wary of fraudsters or impersonators.

QNET is a law-abiding and socially-responsible company. QNET, through its social impact arm, RYTHM Foundation, has partnered with many charity projects across the world to empower less-privileged and physically-impaired people. In Ghana, QNET is actively supporting the Anopa Project, providing deaf and blind children with access to education and sporting skills.

  • Sam Johnson backs Sports Minister’s decision not to disclose World Cup budget to Ghanaians

Former Black Stars defender, Sam Johnson has backed the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ decision not to disclose the budget for the 2022 World Cup to the public until the tournament is over.

The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif earlier said they have already budged for Ghana’s entire campaign in Qatar but he can not disclose the details to Ghanaians.

“We have budgeted for the entire tournament and where we are going to reach will determine how much we will going to spend. So until we finish the tournament, we can’t tell you (Ghanaians) how much we are going to spend but we have a budget estimated for the entire tournament,” Mustapha Ussif said as quoted by JoySports.

Mustapha Ussif has received a lot of public backlash after his statement but Sam Johnson has jumped to his defense as he claims disclosing the budget will cause an uproar because of the economic conditions.

“Everyone knows the situation at hand in the country, there is economic crisis, so if they make the budget public I think it is going to disorganize everything.”

“We are in difficult times as a nation, for me, to play safe, I think they will prefer not to mention but if they go there and perform and the budget is disclosed there wouldn’t any complain,” he said as quoted by footballghana.com.

The Black Stars will begin their 2022 FIFA World Cup with an opening game against Portugal on Thursday, November 24 at the 974 Stadium in Doha, Qatar.

  • Bechem United beat Asante Kotoko 2-0 in outstanding fixture

Bechem United defeated Asante Kotoko by 2-0 in an outstanding matchday two encounter of the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League season at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour park on Thursday, November 3rd.

The highly competitive game saw both sides creating chances in the opening minutes of the game but Bechem United were awarded a penalty after the ball came off the hands of a Kotoko player in his own box.

Kofi Agbesimah converted the penalty kick in the 23rd minute to send Bechem United into the break with a deserved lead.

Kotoko returned after the break as a more determined side but were unlucky in front of goal.

A counterattack from Bechem United led to the second goal after Clinton Dodoo went on the run into Kotoko’s box and found Emmanuel Avornyo who sealed the 2-0 victory for Bechem United in the 63rd minute.

Kotoko were later reduced to 10 men in the 86th minute after Steven Amankonah clashed with the referee and his assistant.

The win has seen Bechem United climb to 8th on the Ghana Premier League table while Kotoko stays in the 5th spot, a win for the Porcupines would have sent them top of the table.

  • Economic crisis: ‘What I see coming is not looking good’ – Ken Thompson kneels on TV, begs Akufo-Addo

As communities, businesses, and citizens have been struggling to make ends meet in somewhat unsettling times, the current economic troubles in Ghana have reached historic proportions.

The local currency has lost almost 50% of its value against the US dollar since the beginning of this year, and the cost of living, fuel price increases, job losses, labor agitations, and general discontent among the Ghanaian population have been rising for months.

Although President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has formally admitted the country has been plunged into a crisis, hopes of securing an IMF support programme to restore macroeconomic stability have been put into question by economic experts.

Chief Executive Officer of Dalex Finance, Ken Thompson, has made a passionate appeal to President Akufo-Addo to fix the ailing economy which is facing distress on all levels.

The Dalex Finance CEO speaking in an interview on Accra-based Citi TV’s ‘Face to Face’ segment on November 1 knelt, facing the camera, and cautioned the president over what he believes is a dire economic situation that will further hit Ghana.

The 61-year-old finance expert said, “His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo If you’re watching, what I can see coming is not looking good…I can see poverty, job losses, business closures, prices of utilities going up”

“Growing up, I lived through the crisis in the 1970s as I witnessed my parents come back from England. My mother at the time bought a new brand car which she eventually could not repair after the car was involved in an accident.”

“I can remember how our room carpets became threadbare, our living room chairs and tables broken, and how we started wearing second-hand clothes due to the economic hardship…I have seen it all, but I am 61-years-old and I cannot do much about what is currently happening in Ghana but you [President Akufo-Addo] can and I am begging you to please take decisive action to move the country forward. Thank you, sir,” he concluded.

  • 9 passengers kidnapped in Port Harcourt

At least nine passengers travelling in a commercial vehicle along the Emohua Local Government axis of the East-West road in Rivers State were kidnapped on the night of Wednesday, November 2, 2022.

A source from one of the communities in the area, who confirmed the incident said the abduction took place at the boundary between Evekwu and Rumuodogo in Emohua Local Government Area.

The source said policemen from the nearest Elibrada Police Division arrived late at the scene after the hoodlums had diverted their victims into a nearby bush.

This is the second of such attacks this week.

On Tuesday, hoodlums reportedly blocked the same axis of the road to rob commercial passengers of their belongings.

The Rivers State Police Command is yet to comment on both incidents.

However, several sources claimed there is now an agitation for the return of a local vigilante group in the area which was disbanded by local government authorities

  • Can you still say that your ministers are excellent? – Charles Owusu to Akufo-Addo

The former Operations Manager of the Forestry Commission of Ghana, Charles Owusu, has taken a swipe at President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his continuous praise of his ministerial appointees.

In a Peace FM interview monitored by GhanaWeb, Charles Owusu, questioned whether Akufo-Addo will continue to say that his ministers are performing excellently given the deteriorating economic condition in the country.

He berated the appointees of the president, particularly those at the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana for going quiet as the country suffers.

“This is why sometimes, some of us ask President Akufo-Addo whether he thinks after all the happenings in the economy, the performance of his ministers is beyond excellent.

“… the prices of all items are increasing in the country. It is true that we are facing hardship but the problem I have with the Nana Addo government is that after the president has addressed the nation, all the heads of the ministers, departments and agencies have gone silent and the president is been criticised for everything.

“The Ministry of Finance has two ministers and two deputies what are we hearing from them? Akufo-Addo is being blamed for everything and they are sitting in some corner doing nothing, all of them are silent. Because if the officials of the Bank of Ghana and the Ministry of Finance start engaging Ghanaians the Ghana Cedi will not be depreciating as it,” he said in Twi.

  • Energy Consultant predicts shortage of petroleum products

Energy Consultant and former Member of Parliament for Damango, Mutawakilu Adam, is predicting a shortage of petroleum products in the country if the government does not take immediate steps to bring the rate of cedi depreciation under control.

As part of measures to avert the situation, the former ranking member on the Energy Committee in Parliament advised the government to take off some taxes on petroleum products, such as the Special Petroleum Tax.

According to him, the Special Petroleum Tax has outlived its usefulness on the Ghanaian people in terms of the purpose it was introduced.

“The government needs to prioritize how it handles foreign exchange issues. I know the cocoa syndicated loans may come, but how long will it take, and what are the expectations for future foreign currencies? Apart from the cocoa syndicated loans, the next one is the IMF coming in to help. How long will it take us to have an agreement? That is very unclear.

“So the government must take pragmatic measures to ensure that there is foreign currency available to the BDCs to be able to import finished products into the country. If not, we will have a serious challenge with the availability of petroleum products,” Mr. Mutawakilu stated on Starr Today with Joshua Kodjo Mensah Tuesday, October 1, 2022.

He continued: “But what is causing the increase in fuel prices is the rate of the depreciation of the cedi. It is what is contributing significantly to the increases in prices of petroleum products in the country. Not the international prices.”

According to him, the international crude price is now above the benchmark that was captured by the Finance Minister in the 2022 Budget.

“So there is definitely a windfall for our export of crude. As President Mahama indicated, within the first quarter, we raked in almost 732 million dollars. In Ghana cedi [it] is about 8.7 billion Ghana cedis which is more than we expected for the whole year. So that indicates we have enough windfall from our crude exports.

“The government must move in to make sure that it is using this money to cushion Ghanaians. Because the way the price is moving is quite alarming, which is not the fault of the ordinary Ghanaian. No, it is the fault of the managers of the economy, so the government must cushion Ghanaians with respect to the fuel prices,” the former lawmaker indicated.

  • Cedi depreciation: ‘BoG’s illegal money to government chasing the dollar’ – Adongo

Isaac Adongo, a member of parliament for Bolgatanga Central, claims that the Bank of Ghana illegally injected Ghana cedis into the economy, which is the cause of the cedi’s ongoing decline versus the dollar.

Mr. Adongo claimed that the central bank’s disobedience of and disdain for the law regarding budget funding is to blame for the issue.

“Last year, 2021, they ended the year with 35 billion Ghana cedis, and as we speak today, they are heading toward the same 35 billion, which would bring it to 70 billion. When you do that, there are two things that happen. One is that monies that you have pumped into the economy, the cedi in the economy, is what is chasing the dollar now,” Mr. Adongo told Starr News

He continued: “If you have over 70 billion of monies that do not belong to the economy, in the economy and chasing the dollar, the dollar would definitely collapse the cedi. That is caused by the Bank of Ghana itself. Two, when you do that, then you need to mop up the excess liquidity; you need to find a way to get that money back into the banking sector and probably back to the Bank of Ghana.

In doing so, you must continuously increase the policy rate. Now, in the end, it is the businessman who gets hurt because he must be able to find a business that can give him 35% of returns of margins to pay the interest and even leave something to survive on.”

According to Mr. Adongo, the Central Bank’s action has therefore resulted in an increase in interest rates and the cost of doing business.

  • Today in History: We siphon fuel for survival – Tanker drivers admit

Drivers of fuel tankers acknowledged that they steal fuel because of their meager pay. To press their bosses for improved working conditions, they went on a sit-down strike.

It is true that we siphon, but it is not our responsibility, said George Nyaunu, president of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union.
We steal petrol because we are starving.

We won’t steal if we are paid handsomely, he remarked. We receive GH 1,500 every month, and that payment is irregular.

The National President of Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union (GNPTDU) has admitted that his members siphon fuel but that should not be blamed on them.

George Nyaunu said tanker drivers are poorly paid and so the only way of survival is to siphon in order to survive but not that they want to merely steal.

Gas Tanker Drivers Union (GTDU) of GNPTDU declared a sit-down strike, which has led to the shortage of gas in some parts of Accra.

Members of the Gas Tanker Drivers Union laid down their tools on Thursday, October 29.

Several persons seeking to purchase LPG for domestic and commercial purposes were stranded at the various vending points across the country on Saturday, October 31.

It took the interventions of the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations for them to halt the strike on Sunday.

They are expected to meet the Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo Marfo, to deliberate on the issue and resolve it.

Speaking to the issue on Monday Onua FM’s Yen Sempa hosted by Nana Okyere Awurukuo, Mr. Nyaunu admitted that “it’s true we siphon but it is not our fault. We siphon fuel because of hunger”.

He said, “if we are paid well, we will not steal. We are being paid GH¢1,500 a month and that does not come regularly”.

Mr. Nyaunu wondered: “We are not being paid, how do you want us to survive?”

    Police harassments

The president also complained of harassments and extortions by the police when they are transporting fuel to the various destinations.

“The police worry us. They don’t have the gadgets to detect whether the fuel is contaminated or not yet they harass us and extort from us.”

  • 2022 World Cup: GFA seals $2 million sponsorship deal with MTN for Black Stars

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced MTN Ghana as the headline sponsor for the Black Stars ahead 2022 FIFA World Cup to be staged in Qatar.

The event to officially unveil the telecommunication company happened on Thursday, November 3, at the GFA Secretariat.

Selorm Adadevoh, the CEO of MTN Ghana, announced during a brief ceremony that the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, was key in sealing the $2 million sponsorship deal.

“Today was made possible, starting by a meeting with the Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita, our Senior Vice President for Market, Mr Ebenezer Asante and H. E. the President, to discuss the sponsorship that we celebrate today,” he said.

During his trip to New York for the 77th UNGA in September, H. E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had a courtesy visit from the MTN Group delegation at his hotel. Akufo-Addo urged the delegation of the group to assist the SBlack Stars’ World Cup preparations during their meeting with him.

In his address, Hon. Mustapha Ussif, Minister of Youth and Sports, acknowledged MTN’s contribution to sports development and thanked them for investing in sports.

He also added, “as the sector Minister, I can assure you that my Ministry is the custodian of every penny for the National teams, and just like every other corporate support we continue to receive, the funds will be used judiciously.”

The FA President, Kurt Edwin Simon Okraku, recognised MTN as the Association’s longest-standing partner. He praised the network provider for the numerous partnerships the association has had with them.

  • ‘Sika mpɛ dede nanso ɛkɔm frɛ dede’ – Dr Duffuor jabs Akufo-Addo

Former Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Duffuor has taken a swipe at President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his “sika mpɛ dede” remark during his address to Ghanaians on the current hardship in the country.

Dr Duffuor intimated that Akufo-Addo’s “sika mpɛ dede” remark, which literally translates as “money does not like noise”, does not make sense because hungry people will always make noise, “ɛkɔm frɛ dede”.

“Let’s all remember that even though ‘Sika mpɛ dede nanso ɛkɔm frɛ dede. Yɛ ani abere, ɛkɔm de yɛn.’!” he said at a media interaction in Accra on Thursday, November 03, 2022.

Dr Duffuor, who announced his intention to contest in the flagebearship race of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), said that if he becomes president, he will ensure that every Ghanaian, regardless of circumstances surrounding their birth, will have equal opportunity to thrive – live the “Ghanaian Dream”.

“In the next few weeks, I will tour our great land and meet with my fellow brothers and sisters to speak about our issues, our lives, our needs and our dreams as citizens. I look forward to having those conversations and to explain what I mean by ‘The Ghanaian Dream’,” he said.

He added that he would rebuild the country to the heights it reached when he was finance minister, where Ghana was adjudged the fastest-growing economy in the world.

“Let us rescue our economy to end the hardship, pain and suffering of our fellow citizens. We are a great nation, and we have the capacity to rebuild our economy again as we did during 2009 –2012,” he said.

  • Police hold Remembrance Day for fallen officers in Central Region

The Central Regional Police Command on Wednesday held a Remembrance Day for three gallant officers who lost their lives in the line of duty this year in the region.

Held at the forecourt of the Regional Police head office, the ceremony brought together families of the bereaved officers and other security agencies.

The deceased police officers were Sergeant Hifzullai Alihu, Corporal Kojo Mahama, and Chief Inspector Williams Dogbe.

Sgt. Alihu, who was with the operations units in Cape Coast, was run over by a driver, C/L Mahama, with the Court unit died in a motor accident and Inspector Dogbe died after a short illness.

Wreaths were laid to celebrate the fallen heroes for their dedication and commitment to the peace and stability of the country.

Mr Ernest Arthur, the Cape Coast Metropolitan Chief Executive, who represented Mrs. Justina Marigold Assan, the Regional Minister laid a wreath on behalf of the President and the people of Ghana,

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Alexander Amenyo, the Regional Police Commander, laid the wreath  on behalf of Dr. George Akufo-Dampare, the Inspector General of Police while Mrs Fatimatu Issah did for the departed officers.

Reverend Chief Inspector Felix Mensah-Kwagyir, the Chaplain at the Command led the memorial service, exhortation, and a call to remembrance.

There was a sounding of the last post and a minute silence was observed and flags hoisted at half mast and  officers in uniform saluted.

Addressing the gathering before the ceremony, DCOP Amenyo charged the officers not to be discouraged by the challenges but be resilient and determined to maintain national peace.

He said the Remembrance Day had been singled out by the Police Administration to give special recognition to serving police officers who lost their lives while on duty, be it in the country or on peacekeeping duties.

It is a day to recognize the contributions and the sacrifices made by the officers at the peril of their lives.

According to him, once police officers paid the ultimate price in the course of performing their duty, the Police Memorial Day celebrates such heroes and engraves their memories as a permanent monument.

The idea for the observation was conceived in November 24, 2014 but the maiden event took place on a bare floor at the time.

The cenotaph was first used to mark the Remembrance Day for officers who perished in November 2015 and 2016.

The day has been permanently fixed for November 2 to coincide with all Souls Day of the Catholic Calendar.

The Police Administration also uses the occasion to visit families of the bereaved families and offer them some support while church services and Muslim prayers are held after the ceremony in honour of the dead.

In an exhortation, Rev. Mensah-Kwagyir reminded everyone about the inevitability of death and said: “The reality is that we will all exit the world in different circumstances and so no one can escape it.”

He said the death of a police officer was not only a loss to the family but to the nation as well and charged the police officers to be steadfast and focused on their duties.

  • Ghana is on fire; I have a responsibility to help quench it – Dr. Kwabena Duffuor

A former Minister of Finance, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, has stated that Ghana is currently at a stage in its history that can only be described as a house on fire.

He explained however that he is the right man to help quench that fire.

The former Governor of the Bank of Ghana made this known at a brief press conference to officially announce his bid to run for the position of flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to him, the fact that even the youth are unable to get jobs is an indication of how bad the situation is.

“Today, Ghana our house, is on fire and as a citizen, I have the responsibility to help quench this fire. The economy is in shambles, the youth are unemployed and desperate, and Ghanaians everywhere are going through very difficult times, lacking the most basic necessities of life,” he said.

Dr. Kwabena Duffuor stressed that the current economic hardships are a sorry state of what Ghana’s founding fathers envisaged for the country and as such, he is ready to help restore the country to its required state.

“This is not what our Founding Fathers envisaged, this is not where a country with immense blessings and resources like Ghana should be. The time for change is NOW,” he added.

Dr. Kwabena Duffuor’s intention to run for the NDC’s flagbearer race makes him the first person to officially announce a bid to contest the country’s largest opposition party’s slot towards the 2024 general elections.

  • Today in History: Tax burden killing businesses – Seth Terkper

Seth Terkper, a former finance minister, lamented the exorbitant taxes that Ghanaian companies must pay.

In his opinion, taxes today are much higher than they were during the previous NDC regime.

According to Seth Terkper, the government raised the energy sector levy and indirectly raised the value-added tax as of 2019. (VAT).

Seth Terkper, former Finance Minister during the erstwhile Mahama government, has contended that the tax burden remains the major bane of businesses under the tenure of the Akufo-Addo-led government, ABC News can report.

According to the former Finance Minister, businesses in Ghana are paying more taxes currently compared to what they paid during the administration of former President John Mahama.

He avers that this phenomenon is in contrast with what was promised to Ghanaians in the build-up to the 2016 general elections.

Speaking in an interview monitored by ABC News, Seth Terkper condemned the government for the taxes it has levied on Ghanaians and businesses since they took over the governance of the country in 2017.

The argument by Seth Terkper, however, is arguable considering the fact that the Akufo-Addo government scrubbed almost 17 ‘nuisance’ taxes in its first budget as a government.

To buttress his point, Seth Terkper advanced that government has within the time in government increased the Energy sector levy and indirectly increased the Value Added Tax (VAT).

Despite the government’s intervention, though some policies that have been lauded as innovative, aimed at improving the business climate in the country, Seth Terkper is of the view that little results have been recorded.

He mentioned that the recent port reforms did not bring the expected impact as envisaged suggesting that the benchmark value that slashed import duties by up to 50 percent this year has not necessarily helped all traders but rather increased the cost of transaction for some.

  • ‘Your demand to peg salaries to US dollar untenable’ – VALCO to workers

The management of the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) has said its workers are demanding to have their salaries pegged to the United States dollar.

This comes after over 300 workers, led by the union executives made the demand following their last salary adjustment which took place on September 1, 2021.

But recent agitation by workers at the company in the last few days has resulted in failure to reach an agreement with VALCOs management and therefore resulted in protests on Friday October 28.

VALCO in a statement however clarified that the salary of the Ghanaian worker is not indexed in the United States but rather in Ghanaian local currency, the Cedi.

“The demand for workers to have their salaries pegged to US Dollar is untenable and must be disregarded,” portions of the statement read.

“We however recongize that both internal and external factors may cause an appreciation or depreciation of the cedi to the US Dollar and other foreign currencies, a situation that may impact the salaries of workers from time-time,” VALCO explained.

In addition to this, management of VALCO said workers have since rejected a 22 percent salary increment in demand of the dollar equivalent.

According to the management, staff of the company described the increment as insufficient and staged a demonstration in the early hours of Monday, October 31, 2022, to register their displeasure.

The workers are therefore calling for better conditions of service and the immediate dismissal of some management members whom they describe as retirees.

  • Dr Duffuor officially announces bid to contest in NDC flagbearership race

Former Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Duffuor has officially announced his intention to contest in the flagbearship race of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking at a media interaction in Accra on Thursday, November 3, 2022, Dr. Duffuor said he would file his candidature as soon as the party opens nominations.

He intimated that he is contesting for the position because he is confident that he is the leader the country needs at this moment.

“Announcement: to contest for the flagbereship of the NDC anytime the party opens nominations. I offer myself once again to service my country with sacrifice when I’m given the chance to do so

    .

“The temporary shift we have grown used to must give way to permanent change in attitude, priorities, (and) distribution which will benefit generation after generation.

“We are witnessing a real dawn of an era in which country tramps person and progress tramps power. The Ghanaian dream, giving opportunities to all persons regardless of circumstances surrounding their birth; everyone needs equal opportunities,” he said.

  • Ghanaian traders, businessmen are making life unbearable – Hassan Ayariga

Hassan Ayariga, a lawmaker in Ghana, has urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to establish a standard to regulate the cost of food products on the market.

The politician accuses some market vendors of intentionally raising prices while blaming the government in a Daily Graphic post on Facebook.

The APC leader claimed that traders are making life difficult for citizens and blaming the dollar for it.

“Prices of foodstuffs such as local bananas, pawpaw, coconut, salt, okro, cassava, kontomire, palm oil, koko, Fura and Wassa Wassa have gone up astronomically in the market.

“Even when all these items are all grown in Ghana, those commodity’s prices have been doubled in the markets and we still blame the dollar. Ghanaian traders and businessmen are making life unbearable for fellow Ghanaians.

“Government should institute a price guarantee and control system to control prices of goods and services in the system.”

  • FLASHBACK: Ghanaians to consume more ready-made fast foods – US study reveals

According to a survey by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Ghanaians will expect more prepared and fast foods in the coming years.

According to the survey, Ghanaians would increasingly prefer pre-made foods, canned goods, sauces, and bottled beverages in the years to come due to population growth and an increase in disposable money.

According to a piece of the paper, “Ghana is also anticipated to import more global snack foods as Ghanaian families demand more easily accessible food products.”

A new report released by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has revealed that Ghanaians’ demand for readymade and fast foods will significantly rise in the next few years, ABC News can report.

The report explains that in the next few years, already-prepared foodstuffs, canned foods, sauces, and bottled drinks among others will be in very high demand relative to their current demand.

USDA revealed that an increase in population and a rise in disposable income of Ghanaians are the main drivers of this imminent shift in consumption in the very near future. In general, the demand for Western goods, especially protein-rich products will rise.

“Similarly, global snack food imports by Ghana are expected to increase as Ghanaian households desire more readily-accessible food products,” a portion of the report indicated.

According to the report, this shift in consumption is also partly attributable to the inability of Ghana’s agricultural production to meet the growing demand hence the resolve to patronise foreign-made foods.

“A young labour force, annual increases in labour productivity, high rates of urbanization, and recent increases in employment are driving demand for modern products and new foods”, the report further explained.

This will require Ghana to import more meat products annually, the report predicted.

Also, the report showed that Ghana imported nearly $2 billion of agricultural and related products in the past three years. The imports were primarily from the EU, China, Brazil, and Southeast Asia. The US holds a 4.9 percent market share of Ghanaian agricultural imports, the report said.

According to the report, Ghana maintains an open trade environment towards U.S. agricultural imports and market preferences appear favourable for increasing trade volume.

This report comes at a time Ghana’s government is considering implementing policies such as the “See, Eat, Wear, Feel Ghana” campaign to reduce Ghana’s food importation bill.

  • Sack our DCE – Awutu Senya West NDC to Akufo-Addo

The Awutu Senya West Wing of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) wants the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area, Joseph Aidoo, removed from office.

The Awutu Senya NDC wants President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to sack the DCE as it claims his inability to fulfill the District Performance Assessment Tool (DPAT VI) has denied the people of the Awutu Senya West District, of significant resources to enable development in the various communities in the area.

According to the Awutu Senya NDC, the DCE, must pay for depriving the various communities of their development.

At a press conference held at Awutu Beraku, Thursday, 3 November 2022, Communication Officer for the Awutu Senya NDC, Cassius Otto Larbie, noted: “The release from the office of the head of the Local Government Service dated 11/10/2022 indicates that Hon. Joseph Aidoo; the District Chief Executive (DCE) who was imposed on the people of Awutu Senya West district by the president, through Mr Eugene Arhin; director of communication at the presidency, was unable to fulfill minimum conditions and performance indicators (KPIs) to qualify for more resources to develop Awutu Senya West District, a clear picture of super incompetence and ineptitude.”

It further noted: “The statement issued by the office of the head of Local Government service, says, Hon. Joseph Aidoo has become a source of impediment to the growth and development of the district, due to his inability to fulfill the requirement under the district performance assessment tool (DPAT VI) and this has worsened the living standards of the people of the area.”

The Awutu West Senya NDC indicated that the DCE “has failed woefully to alleviate poverty, which is one of the cardinal motives of sustainable development goals (SDG 1).”

It emphasised thar per the statement, “the resources provided to the district, for developmental projects, have been misappropriated, which is a clear indication of incompetence, abysmal performance, poor leadership skills and a crisis of credibility.

“In this regard Hon Joseph Aidoo should not be accorded as a good leader and must be held accountable for the lack of development in Awutu Senya West district, and he must be sacked with immediate effect.”

It indicated:” The DCE, who was appointed as a representative of the president, and a development agent for Awutu Senya West, is always seen working for an NGO, named “Eugene Arhin Foundation.

The background of the NGO needs no introduction. He has therefore become an impediment to the growth of the citizenry.”

It added: “We are highly disappointed in this denial and the DCE must be sacked.”

  • FLASHBACK: We want to grow a local indigenous railway industry – Minister

The government intended to establish a domestic railroad industry, according to Joe Ghartey, the then-minister for railway development.

“We want to use our own indigenous people to do what can be done outside in Ghana, and we will send people abroad to get the training they need,” he stated. However, this does not mean that we have stopped importing coaches.

“The goal of this relationship is to develop a local, indigenous railroad industry so that, in the not too distant future, we will be able to manufacture coaches in Ghana.
I expect the GRCL and master craftsmen to do an outstanding job on the coaches as we have challenged them to do so,” he said.

Mr. Joe Ghartey, Minister for Railways Development, has said that his ministry remained focused on building an indigenous railway industry that will give opportunities to local master craftsmen in the revival of the sector.

‘’We want to grow a local indigenous railway industry and to come to a situation where not too long from now, we will be able to assemble coaches in Ghana and that is the aim of this collaboration. We have challenged the GRCL and master craftsmen to do a good job and I expect them to do a fantastic job on the coaches.”

Mr Ghartey said this during a tour at the Tema Railway Station with some master craftsmen from Suame in Kumasi, who were to engage the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) and give them a helping hand in the refurbishment of some selected coaches in the country.

‘’We want to use our own indigenous people to do what can be done outside in Ghana and we will send people to acquire the necessary training outside, but it does not mean we have abandoned importation of coaches,’’ he added.

Mr Ghartey envisaged changing the face of the sector by the introduction of new services that would make Ghana among the best in Africa and warned people who were engaged in theft of the railway property as they would be properly dealt with when caught.

His department, he said remained determined to protect state property.
Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Majority leader in Parliament, in his address, emphasised the need to develop the railway sector to ensure roads lasted longer and facilitated the transportation of goods to help develop the nation.

He also asserted that, the development of the railway sector would thrive the “One District One Factory” agenda of the government and lead to de-urbanisation to ensure sustainable development across the country.

Meanwhile, GRCL will next week commence a test drive across the Eastern Railway Line Corridor from Tema to Achimota to access the state of the rail lines which will subsequently pave way for the transportation of passengers in the near future.

  • Cedi performance unpredictable, stability may continue – Analyst

A lead researcher at GCB Capital and a Currency Analyst, Courage Boti, has noted that the cedi may see some stability in the coming weeks.

He noted that this may continue as the Bank of Ghana’s rate may become the base rate for exchange.

The cedi is currently selling at GH¢13.50 at various forex bureaus in the country.

“I expect that this trend could continue until we get to the ¢13 levels and then that is when you will receive some sense of stability because the Bank of Ghana rate would become the floor or the lowest level. The thing really is that you don’t want to see some volatility. I guess it might fall to the interbank rate now [¢13.001] and stabilize around that level,” he is quoted by myjoyonline.com.

The analyst also noted that it would be difficult to predict due to its performance in recent times. The cedi depreciated by more than 50% in the past few weeks.

“I think it is quite unpredictable because we are still not out of the wounds yet. I think we are doing about 50% depreciation now and I see the cedi ending the year around that level. It shouldn’t be significantly different from the ¢13, the ¢13.5 levels by end of the year as things stand. That is for me to say that there could be some more appreciation to come in the next few weeks before stability,” he stated.

“So, if there is a reversal in trend, it should go back to 13.50 as things stand now. But I must add cautiously that the trends and market dynamics are still very uncertain and it is very difficult to pinpoint the rate at the cedi would end of the year,” he added.

  • Akufo-Addo’s daughter denies receiving a $25 million contract from government

Gyankroma Akufo-Addo, the president’s daughter, denied receiving $25 million to paint some areas of the nation’s capital.

She claimed that the Creative Arts Agency was the only source of funding for the endeavor.

According to a statement from the organization, “For the avoidance of any doubt, it is crucial to stress that these programs were completely developed, overseen, and funded by The Creative Arts Agency, through its own fundraising activities.”

The statement added that the project was not a profit-making venture, as has been reported on social media.

“It is a complete fabrication being propagated by some shameless persons, and which, unfortunately, has been published by sections of the media. This project was not embarked upon to make a profit, and there have been no lucrative contracts awarded for it,” it added.

Per details on the website of the Creative Arts Council’s website, cac.gov.gh, Gyankroma Akufo-Addo is the Director of the council.

Below is the full statement by Gyankoma Akufo-Addo:

    CREATIVE ARTS AGENCY

In August 2018, Art for All was conceived. Its purpose was to beautify our capital city of Accra, to give a platform to our Ghanaian artists, to build art appreciation for its audience, and to serve as beautiful backdrops for videos, or photoshoots and be a tourist attraction.

Each site had a six-week workshop process to identify themes, locations, and artists. Each site was paid for with funds largely from the private sector, sourced solely by the Creative Arts Agency. No contract to paint a succession of bridges or underpasses has either been conceived, has ever been offered, or has ever been accepted. Indeed, any tender or contract awarded for such a project would have been made public.

For the avoidance of any doubt, it is important to state that these projects were solely conceived, managed, and financially undertaken by The Creative Arts Agency, through its own fundraising activities.

Site 1, Ako Adjei, was funded by the private sector.

Site 2, Tetteh Quarshie, was paid for by myself, Gyankroma Akufo-Addo.

Site 3, was completed through the generosity of the creatively minded Ben Asante, CEO of Ghana Gas, who understands its social community importance.

The paint used for each site, again, was provided by Coral Paints and its CEO, who understand the importance of pushing the visibility of Ghanaian artists. The absurdity of $25 million, or any amount for that matter, being awarded to myself to undertake this project is a disgusting narrative.

It is a complete fabrication being propagated by some shameless persons, and which, unfortunately, has been published by sections of the media. This project was not embarked upon to make a profit, and there have been no lucrative contracts awarded for it.

All efforts to undermine my credibility through the publication of these falsehoods and baseless lies will not wash. I have instructed my lawyer to seek redress in the law courts against persons and media houses that published these falsehoods with the sole intention of destroying my reputation.

  • Murder allegation against Bullgod: Lawyer Sosu dissects Shatta Wale’s claim

Ghanaian lawyer and politician Francis-Xavier Kojo Sosu has given legal education concerning the accusation Shatta Wale levelled against his former manager, Bullgod, for having a hand in the murder of one Fenick.

In a social media post by the Dancehall artiste on November 2, 2022, he mentioned he was ready to tell the court how the act was planned and executed.

Due to Bullgod’s history as regards the murder of Fennec Okyere, some social media users concluded that Shatta Wale’s ‘Fenick’ was actually Fennec Okyere who before his demise was the manager of rapper Kwaw Kese. In 2018, Bullgod was discharged by the court in relation to the murder case.

Some have chastised Shatta Wale for leveling what they described as a serious accusation following his altercation with Bullgod who was once his manager.

Speaking to Abrantepa on GhanaWeb TV’s E-Forum, lawyer Francis-Xavier Kojo Sosu mentioned that it will be presumptuous to connect the two names – Fenick and Fennec.

“If even a correlation is drawn between the two names, that may be presumptive. I think that if anybody really believes that Bullgod indeed has committed some crime and knows that he has evidence to that effect, the best place is to go to the police station and not social media,” he advised.

“So, I think that you may have to ignore that post and then move forward. Crime investigation is not done on social media.

“It is done at the police station, so if anybody has critical information that can help any court convict somebody, then, it is the police that you go to,” he added.

Asked if the conclusion is that there is nothing serious about what Shatta Wale shared on social media, the legal brain said “that’s the point. It has no consequence but if the CIDs are interested, they may invite him for further information if he really believes he has it.”

“But the question is that if you do have it, why has it taken you this long? You heard that somebody has been arrested for that crime so why didn’t you go and volunteer that information? That’s why I doubt we should take that post seriously,” Sosu stated.

Meanwhile, the police has said it is in touch with Shatta Wale following his claim that he has information about how Bullgod planned the murder of Fenick.

“The Police have made contact with Shata Wale who is cooperating with us on the matter. The Police would like to put on record that the recently established Cold Case Unit, has been working for months on all unresolved murder cases, including that of Fennec Okyere with support from the affected families,” a statement by the police shared on social media read.

Fennec Okyere was murdered on Thursday, March 13, 2014, murdered at his Manet Gardens residence on Spintex Road, Accra, by unknown assailants. He was 31.

Bullgod was later arrested on the basis that he had supposedly threatened Fennec Okyere on air.

  • Transport fares increased again?

After passengers had to bear the brunt of the upward surge in the cost of fuel on October 29, 2022, there seem to be have been another increment in transport fares, one that was unannounced and has caught passengers by surprise.

The new increment comes after the Ghana Private Road Transport Union announced a 19% increment in transport fares due to the increasing rate of fuel prices.

However, with the announcement of new fuel prices earlier this week where fuel currently sells at GH¢18 and diesel at above GH¢23, the driver unions have hiked their fares again just after the initial 19 % increment.

Although it has not been established the exact percentage of the increase, some drivers have increased fares by GH¢1.

According to citinewsroom reports, some of the drivers at the Neoplan Station said the increment is due to the increase in the price of petroleum products.

“It is not the driver’s fault. It is not the passenger’s fault… If the government can reduce the fuel prices, we will come back to the previous price because people are suffering,” one driver said to Citi News.

The passengers noted that the increase has compounded the economic hardships they are currently.

“We are just worried, and we don’t know what we are going to do now… it is very bad. The government needs to do something about it. We are suffering,” one passenger was quoted by citinewsroom.com.

“On Monday, I paid GHS6 to Circle. This morning, I paid GHS7.5… the driver is even complaining that if he takes GHS100, he won’t get a gallon of diesel to buy,” another said.

  • Take decisive action – Ken Thompson to Akufo-Addo as he predicts looming economic disaster

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dalex Finance and Leasing Company Limited Kenneth Thompson has begged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to as a matter of urgency take decisive action to restore Ghana to economic soundness.

Known simply as Ken Thompson, he dramatically went on his knees on the Face To Face programme hosted by Umaru Sanda Amadu on Accra-based Citi TV and pleaded with the president.

With pensive look he said, “His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa, what I can see coming is not good. If you’re watching me, what I can see coming is not good. I can see poverty, I can see job losses, I can see business closures, I can see prices going up – prices of electricity will go up, I can see it.”

He drew parallels between memories of his childhood and the current economic problems in Ghana.

“I lived through the 70s, I saw it. When my mother came back from England, she bought a brand new car – a Peugeot 403. I can see how eventually, she was unable to repair the car. She was involved in a crash – she was on her way to visit me – car crashed and that was the end of it. I remember very well how our carpets became very bare, how our chairs became broken, how we started wearing second-hand clothes – I’ve seen it,” he recalled.

Mr Thompson expressed faith in Mr Akufo-Addo to steer the nation clear of the imminent economic disaster he predicted also.

“I’m 61, I can’t do much about what’s happening now but you can [Mr President], and I’m begging you that please take decisive action – be decisive because I believe that you’re capable of it and let’s move this country forward,” he noted and added: “Thank you, Sir.”

Ghana is currently in an economic crisis admitted to by President Akufo-Addo who maintains it is mainly due to the COVID pandemic and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

In his Sunday, October 30, 2022, nation address, he also highlighted rife uninformed speculations and fear-mongering about the cedi as another reason for the sharp depreciation of the cedi against major global trading currencies such as the US dollar.

With all that said, he assured, “It is obvious, fellow Ghanaians, that you have a government that cares. We are determined to restore stability to the economy, and provide relief. We are all in this together, and I am asking for your support to rescue Ghana from the throes of this economic crisis.”

It has been impressed on the president from both the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) members to sack the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, to restore faith in Ghana’s economy seeing as Mr Ofori-Atta has obviously failed in his office.

President Akufo-Addo has, however, argued, the Finance Minister needs to close the International Monetary Fund (IMF) deal before any such decision can be taken.

  • 2022 World Cup: Black Stars players must be mentally strong – John Mensah

The Black Stars is returning to the global showpiece after missing out in Russia 2018, where France emerged as winners.

“They have to stay together as a team, fight together and I believe they can achieve for themselves and as a nation at large”

  • Removing Ken Ofori-Atta will take about 2 months – Nana Akomea to critics

The Intercity State Transport Corporation’s (STC) Managing Director, Nana Akomea, has defended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for standing by his decision to keep Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta in office despite repeated calls for his ouster.

Over 90 lawmakers from the government’s New Patriotic Party demanded Mr. Ofori-Atta’s dismissal last week, but the President stepped in and instructed them to wait until the Minister finished Ghana’s agreement with the IMF (IMF).

However, some people have questioned the President’s decision asking in the unfortunate incident that the Finance Minister is incapacitated, will the President not find a suitable replacement?

Responding to the calls for Ken Ofori-Atta‘s dismissal, Nana Akomea says, “if you decide to appoint a new Finance Minister, it will take another two months. From nomination, when you nominate, it has to be there for 21 days or something before Parliament can sit and so forth. Even if you speed up the process, it will still cover one month”.

“Has the IMF complained that the Finance Minister is not doing well? If you remove him, it’s just aesthetics?”, he also asked.

Nana Akomea made these comments during Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” discussion programme.

  • Possible shortage of goods, items likely to hit Ghana ahead of December – GUTA

The Ghana Union of Traders Association has warned of a possible shortage in items and goods as the country heads into the festive period in December.

According to the Public Relation Officer of the Union, Joseph Paddy said the recent economic challenges in the country have resulted in less import activity at the ports.

He attributed the development to the increasing cost of duty and freight charges occasioned by the persistent depreciation of the cedi against the US dollar.

“Containers that are coming out of the port are nothing good to write home about. People are not importing, people are keeping their money because if you import you can’t sell and break even or even maximize. So, what we are going to see in the shortest possible time we are going to see a shortage of goods,” Mr. Paddy is quoted by Joy Business.

“They rather prefer to keep their monies in Treasury bills rather than import and lose and due to rising cost of living in the country, you seriously can’t import at that point and make profit. So, they are less import activity for many of our members”.

“For instance, I went to the port just on [November 1, 2022], it is an eye sore, no containers are coming out of the ports; even Golden Jubilee where they clear about 100 containers a day, you go there and it’s about two containers or 30 containers”, the GUTA PRO stressed.

Meanwhile, many citizens and businesses have begun to fold due to the economic conditions in the country with Ghana currently in negotiations with the International Monetary Fund for financial assistance.

  • Black Stars goalkeepers coach Richard Kingston wants to set new record at 2022 World Cup

Former Ghana goalkeeper, Richard Kingston wants to set a new record with the Black Stars as goalkeepers’ trainer at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The Black Stars is returning to the global showpiece after missing out in Russia 2018, where France emerged as winners.

In an interview, Kingston, who was part of the 2010 squad says he is hoping the current Black Stars team can surpass their quarterfinal berth at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The former Blackpool shot stopper played a huge role when Ghana reached the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Ghana were denied a semifinal berth at the World Cup courtesy of a Luis Suarez handball incident in the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The West African powerhouse were also awarded a penalty, but Asamoah Gyan’s attempt from 12 yards crashed into the crossbar, which resulted in Suarez going mental on the touchline and sent the game to a shootout.

Uruguay won the penalty shoot-out to progress to the semifinals with Luis Suarez celebrated for his demonic act.

“Personally, I have belief in the Black Stars team but I cannot assure that we are going to win the trophy but I am hoping that we will surpass the quarterfinal berth in 2010 so that I, as the goalkeepers’ trainer will set a new record”
