  • The UK’s most-streamed songs of 1952 to 2022 revealed

Miley Cyrus, Harry Styles and Gene Kelly have some of the UK’s biggest streaming hits

What do Gene Kelly’s Singin’ In The Rain and The Notorious B.I.G.’s rap anthem Juicy have in common?

No, it’s not an infectious joie de vivre, or copious references to recreational drug use.

Instead, they are the UK’s most-streamed songs from the calendar year in which they were released.

That’s according to the Official Chart Company, who have identified the biggest streaming hit for every year since the chart’s inception in 1952.

Their findings will be broadcast on BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2 next weekend, marking 70 years of the UK singles chart.

The list features superstars from Elvis and the Beatles to Adele and Harry Styles – alongside several songs that were overlooked on release, only to be reclaimed as classics over time.

They include San Francisco rock band Journey, whose single Don’t Stop Believin’ stalled at number 62 in 1981, but subsequently became a rock standard, thanks to its inclusion in TV shows like The Sopranos and Glee.

It is now the most-streamed song of that year, overtaking contemporary hits like Come On Eileen (the UK’s biggest-selling record of 1982) and Survivor’s Eye Of The Tiger.

Ray Charles’ I Got A Woman has enjoyed a similar second-life after being interpolated in Kanye West’s 2005 hit Gold Digger. The track is now the most-played hit of 1954, and has been certified silver (representing 200,000 sales) on streams alone.

By contrast, some of the biggest songs of their era are entirely absent from the Official Charts’ list.

Bryan Adams’ Everything I Do (I Do It For You) spent 16 consecutive weeks at number one in 1991 – an all-time chart record – but Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit is now more popular with streaming fans.

2013’s biggest-selling hit, Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines, has also fallen out of favour, replaced by Vance Joy’s beach ballad Riptide.

    Other entries are more predictable.

The Killers’ Mr Brightside, which has spent an unprecedented 338 weeks on the UK singles chart, is the most-played song of 2003 respectively. And streaming behemoth Ed Sheeran appears in the list three times – for Thinking Out Loud (2014), Shape Of You (2017) and Bad Habits (2021).

Queen also get three entries, with Bohemian Rhapsody (1975), Don’t Stop Me Now (1979) and Another One Bites The Dust (1980).

The Beatles’ sole entry, Here Comes The Sun, was never released as a single in the UK.

Christmas songs have been excluded from the countdown.

The full chart will be broadcast decade by decade on BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2 on 11 and 12 November, with guest hosts including Tony Blackburn, Johnnie Walker, Fearne Cotton and Jack Saunders.

“It’s particularly fascinating to see which classic songs from the past are rated by today’s music consumers, and how that appeal can be driven by exposure on TV, adverts and social media,” said Robert Gallacher, commissioning editor at BBC Radio.

“This chart is a true testament to the timelessness of brilliant pop music.”

  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever stars sparkle at European premiere

The cast of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever have attended the film’s European premiere in London.

Stars including Michaela Coel, Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong’o walked the red carpet for the hugely anticipated sequel to the superhero film.

Coel told the BBC: “The feeling it gives me, as a woman of colour, to see my story reflected back still gives me a rush of exhilaration to be seen.

“This cast give me a lot of confidence, I feel proud to be among them.”

The 2018 release of Black Panther is one of the most profitable movies of all time. The Marvel Studios production made more than £1bn at the box office.

It was the first superhero film to receive an Oscar nomination for best picture. In total it was nominated seven times, winning three for original score, costume design and production design.

The franchise has been praised for its strong portrayal of black characters.

Returning actress Danai Gurira, who plays Okoye, said she hoped Black Panther “paves the way” for other franchisees to cast strong black female leads.

She described filming as an “intense process” following the death of actor Chadwick Boseman, who died in 2020 from colon cancer.

Director Ryan Coogler came up with a plot that could reflect the 43-year-old’s death which Lupita Nyong’o said would “really resonate with people”.

“Respecting Chadwick and what he started us off is the way forward,” Nyong’o told BBC News. “Ryan was so smart to embrace the loss and make this film about what we do when we lose somebody because we all experience it at one point.

“The honesty with it will surprise people and the fact you can do that without compromising on the fun, and the spectacle, is a feat and I’m really proud.”

The first film starred Boseman as the crime-fighting ruler of Wakanda, a fictional African nation with the most advanced technology on earth.

More than 170 million viewers watched the trailer for its follow-up, Wakanda Forever, in the first 24 hours after its release.

Last week Rihanna released her first single in six years which is taken from the soundtrack of the new film.

Coogler said Rihanna’s involvement in the project was to honour Boseman.

“Honestly, I think it was Chad,” he said. “A lot of improbable things needed to happen for it to come through and Rihanna was very clear that she did that for him.”

Other celebrities at the premiere included Stormzy, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Maya Jama.

  • English National Opera to leave London as arts funding gets levelled up

The English National Opera is to move its headquarters outside London and have a drastic budget cut as part of a major shake-up of English arts funding.

The prestigious company will lose its £12.6m core annual grant from Arts Council England, instead getting £17m over three years as part of a plan to relocate, possibly to Manchester.

It’s part of a wider overhaul to move millions of pounds from central London.

Others to have lost their entire grants include the Donmar Warehouse theatre.

Public money from the government, as well as from the National Lottery, is used by Arts Council England to support arts and culture across the nation.

Other London institutions have lost some of their subsidies under the new funding plans, which run from 2023-26. The Royal Opera House will lose £2.9m a year, the Southbank Centre will be cut by £1.9m and the National Theatre will be reduced by £850,000.

ENO chief executive Stuart Murphy told BBC News he was surprised the Arts Council had cut a company that gives free tickets to under-21s and is “way ahead of other opera companies” in bringing in diverse audiences.

    ‘Puzzled’

“I’m slightly confused why we’d have a reduction on an arts company that has so successfully brought in people of colour, brought in young people, and done things like ENO Breathe with the NHS to help people with lung Covid,” he said.

“It will definitely survive, but we are slightly puzzled why they would reduce funding to an opera company that’s doing all the things they need opera to do.”

The ENO is currently based at the historic London Coliseum and its annual Arts Council grant accounts for a third of its total funding, he said.

Arts Council England chair Sir Nick Serota said there were now “opportunities that exist for English National Opera to become a different kind of company working across the country”.

He added: “They are capable of responding, in our view. They’ve got great leadership. They have great achievement, and there seems to us to be an opportunity here that we should grasp.”

Image caption, Places like Blackpool are beneficiaries of the new funding announcement

As part of Friday’s funding announcement, more money will be handed out to organisations outside the capital and in outer London boroughs.

The Belgrade Theatre in Coventry, which will get £1.23m – up from £960,000, said the additional support would help “build a cultural offer that is developed with and for the people of Coventry and wider region, and proudly share it with the world”.

The Shakespeare North Theatre in Prescot, Blackpool’s illuminations and libraries in Barnsley, Warwickshire and East Yorkshire will all get cash for the first time.

It comes after former Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries instructed the Arts Council to redress a “huge historic imbalance” in cultural funding.

    2px presentational grey line
Analysis box by Katie Razzall, Culture editor

What has been announced is the most dramatic shift in funding for the arts I can remember. Many will see it as long overdue.

We’ve known for some time that the money spent per head in London on culture is much higher than outside.

The Arts Council would say its decisions have been driven by its greater understanding of what people want from culture. Its own research shows that the demand is for art and culture to be much more local. People want it on their high streets.

But what’s been announced today ties in clearly with the government’s “levelling up” strategy. Nadine Dorries made it plain she wanted more money moved from London.

One fifth of the cash that used to go to institutions in the capital will be shifted elsewhere by 2026. That can’t come without an obvious cost for the likes of the National Theatre, the Southbank Centre and other renowned centres of culture.

As for the ENO and the talk that it might move to Manchester – the Arts Council is offering it transition financing to help find it a future. But we do not know whether it will take up that offer, and whether there is even room for it there.

Next year The Factory opens, which is Manchester’s big shiny new £210m cultural venue. Some are already asking whether there is the audience to sustain that, let alone a new opera company.

In a statement, the ENO said the announcement “marks the start of a new chapter” and “will allow us to increase our national presence by creating a new base out of London, potentially in Manchester”.

The company said it plans to continue to manage the Coliseum, “using it to present a range of opera and dance whilst maximising it as a commercial asset”.

    ‘Damaging’ cuts

Some other opera companies fared badly in the latest funding round. Welsh National Opera, which is subsidised for its touring in England, has been cut by £2.2m a year, while East Sussex-based opera house Glyndebourne will lose £860,000.

But English Touring Opera, which is one of 24 arts companies to have volunteered to move lout of London under the new plans, has had an increase.

Meanwhile, the Hampstead Theatre said it was “considering how best to ensure the future” of its company after it was “saddened” to not be granted funding from 2023. The Gate, another London theatre, has also lost its grant.

The Covent Garden-based Donmar Warehouse theatre, which has previously hosted actors like Nicole Kidman and Kit Harington, will lose the £513,904 it received in the last financial year.

It claimed the cuts were “self-defeating” and “damaging” to the theatre industry.

    Kit HaringtonImage source, Getty Images

Image caption, Game of Thrones star Kit Harington played Henry V at the Donmar Warehouse earlier this year

The venue’s founding artistic director Sam Mendes described the move as “short-sighted”.

The film-maker said: “The Donmar has been at the heart of British theatre for three decades, and has a hard won legacy of punching well above its weight in both its ambition and reach. It is a world renowned and hugely influential theatre, and the UK cannot afford to put it at risk.”

But Sir Nicholas said the Arts Council had “simply had to make some very invidious choices about where we fund”.

He explained: “The position was made relatively clear when the secretary of state instructed us to take money out of London, and also encouraged us to take money from central London to some parts of the city that hadn’t previously had funding.

“So it was almost inevitable that we would have to take some money away from some of the main theatres in London.

“We’re still going to be funding nearly 60 theatre organisations in the capital, and we’re funding some new organisations in the outer London boroughs.”

Funding for the capital has reduced by 16% to £152m since 2018/19, while other regions have seen a 21% increase to £294m.

  • ‘BoG Governor must resign or president should fire him’ – Dr. Otchere-Ankrah

There is increasing pressure on President of the Republic Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to fire Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta or force him to retire from his position as a result of the cedi’s decline and poor performance versus other currencies, particularly the US Dollar.

The heads of the Finance Minister and the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu Boahen, are being demanded by some 80 Members of Parliament (MP) and many Ghanaians, who believe they are unable to do their duties.

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, is not exempt as pressure mounts on these two leaders.

Contributing to “Kokrokoo” discussion programme on Peace FM Thursday morning, Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah, a Governance Lecturer at the Central University, says the BoG Governor must resign.

He partly blamed the Governor for the steep fall in the cedi, saying the latter is fully aware of the factors causing the depreciation but not doing anything to curtail them.

To buttress his point, he stated that there are some workers at the Bank of Ghana who sends their children to schools charging tuition fees in dollars and also added that there are currently some real estate businesses and other companies that quote their figures in dollars.

He wondered why this is going on under the watch of the Governor.

“Is the Governor of Bank of Ghana still around? If I were you, Governor of Bank of Ghana, I would have resigned . . . He should exit his office; if he doesn’t leave, President should fire him. He is not at the top of affairs,” Dr. Otchere-Ankrah fumed.

  • Revive TOR now instead of looking for cheaper fuel alternatives – IES to government

President Nana Akufo-Addo’s recent remark that the government is exploring for cheaper alternative sources of petroleum products to alleviate the cost burden on Ghanaians has been dubbed “startling” by the Institute for Energy Security (IES).

“I realize that the rising expense of living is the number one issue for all of us,” the president stated in a recent national address on the economic situation.
It is fueled by rapidly rising gas prices, which are brought on by both our depreciating currency and increasing global crude oil prices.
I am aware that this is placing families and companies under unacceptable stress.
He told Ghanaians in a national speech on Sunday night, “I know that individuals are being forced to make decisions that they shouldn’t have to, and I know that it has resulted in the devaluation of traders’ capital and painstakingly collected savings” (30 October 2022).

As part of the mitigation measures, the president announced that “the government is working to secure reliable and regular sources of affordable petroleum products for the Ghanaian market.”

“It is expected that this arrangement, when successful, coupled with a stable currency will halt the escalation of fuel prices and bring relief to us all,” he noted.

However, the IES said in a statement dated Thursday, 3 November 2022 that it is “shocking to hear that the Energy Ministry is actually leading a group roaming the world looking for reliable and regular sources of affordable petroleum products for the Ghanaians, abandoning its role to urgently bring TOR into an operational mode, to provide that reliability to an uninterrupted supply of fuel for the country”.

The Institute said: “Meanwhile, the search for that heavily-discounted fuel price from elsewhere is an unrealistic hope, and the team may return empty handed, unless the expectation/request is exchanged with something valuable to the would-be supplier”.

The statement noted: “If His Excellency the President and the handlers of Ghana’s Energy Ministry look within, they would find what they are desperately looking for from outside the country. Indeed the search for reliable and affordable source of petroleum products starts with the Tema Oil Refinery, which has been down since March 2021, due to lack of crude oil which is the refinery’s main raw material”.

It added: “It beats ones imagination how an oil producing country with a refinery capacity of 45,000 barrels per stream day (bpsd), would have it top government officials abandon its domestic competitive advantage, and rather seek to import refined petroleum product elsewhere, in the name of reliability and affordability”.

“So soon, we seem to have forgotten about the mandate of TOR, and the dream of our founding father Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, for Ghana’s petroleum industry and the economy as a whole. That is fair! But what about His Excellency President Akufo-Addo’s plan for TOR, which he re-echoed on May Day 2022 thus: ‘Nonetheless, intense efforts are being made to rehabilitate the Tema Oil Refinery, to enable it contribute to stabilizing petroleum prices, which should see the light of day very soon. The plan to enhance the dividends of the Tema Oil Refinery, is part of a raft of measures by government to lessen the current economic hardship in the country’”.

The IES noted: “The trip to source for reliable and affordable fuel elsewhere defeats the President’s proclaimed intention for TOR and the economy of Ghana. Instead of giving priority to domestic refining of Ghana’s indigenous crude oil, government is rather resorting to gambling on the importation of liquid fuels without giving a thought to the guarantee of sufficient and reliable supply of same”.

It added that the “government’s sudden appetite for imported fuels to address reliability and cost related issues can best be described as reactionary, morally indefensible, misplaced priority, and a deliberate attempt to increase the fiscal burden of the Ghanaian economy. It must be stated forcefully that ‘the state is better off prioritising local crude refining, instead of importation of refined products’”.

Read the IEC’s full statement below:

THE SEARCH FOR RELIABLE AND AFFORDABLE SOURCE OF FUEL FOR GHANAIANS BEGINS WITH TOR, MR. PRESIDENT

On June 16th 2022, when the Institute for Energy Security (IES) called for His Excellency the President’s intervention to, as a matter of urgency, revive the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), a gallon of diesel was selling for Gh¢55. As part of the concerns, the IES indicated that the Minister in charge of the sector was failing to provide the required leadership to urgently lift TOR out of its present condition.

The IES press statement highlighted the possibility of Ghana losing out on the prospects of the Russian-Ukraine conflict, and the potential to generate synergy between the upstream and the downstream sectors of the Ghanaian petroleum industry. The statement captured that “the global economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russian-Ukraine war somehow presents an opportunity for the country’s petroleum sector.

Between June 16th 2022 (when the IES called for the President’s intervention) and now, many undesiring occurrence have been recorded in the downstream petroleum sector, which has brought untold hardship on citizens, and on industries in Ghana.

    – Price of a liter of Diesel and Petrol has seen an astronomical increase of roughly 79 percent and 95 percent respectively.

    – Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) increased fuel prices thrice in a single pricing-window, a cumulative 46 percent for Diesel and 37 percent for Petrol.

    – Some Bulk Distribution Companies (BDCs) declined to release fuel to the Ghanaian market, forcing some companies to shut down temporary.

Adding to these unfortunate incidents, is the report of top government functionaries having to leave the shores of Ghana to hunt for what they describe as “reliable and regular sources of affordable petroleum products” for Ghanaians.

This comes to the IES as shocking to hear that the Energy Ministry is actually leading a group roaming the world looking for reliable and regular sources of affordable petroleum products for the Ghanaians, abandoning its role to urgently bring TOR into an operational mode, to provide that reliability to an uninterrupted supply of fuel for the country.

Meanwhile, the search for that heavily discounted fuel price from elsewhere is an unrealistic hope, and the team may return empty handed, unless the expectation/request is exchanged with something valuable to the would-be supplier.

If His Excellency the President and the handlers of Ghana’s Energy Ministry look within, they would find what they are desperately looking for from outside the country. Indeed the search for reliable and affordable source of petroleum products starts with the Tema Oil Refinery, which has been down since March 2021, due to lack of crude oil which is the refinery’s main raw material.

It beats ones imagination how an oil producing country with a refinery capacity of 45,000 barrels per stream day (bpsd), would have it top government officials abandon its domestic competitive advantage, and rather seek to import refined petroleum product elsewhere, in the name of reliability and affordability.

So soon we seem to have forgotten about the mandate of TOR, and the dream of our founding father Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, for Ghana’s petroleum industry and the economy as a whole. That is fair! But what about His Excellency President Akufo Addo’s plan for TOR, which he re-echoed on May Day 2022.

“Nonetheless, intense efforts are being made to rehabilitate the Tema Oil Refinery, to enable it contribute to stabilizing petroleum prices, which should see the light of day very soon. The plan to enhance the dividends of the Tema Oil Refinery, is part of a raft of measures by government to lessen the current economic hardship in the country” – President Nana Addo, 2022.

The trip to source for reliable and affordable fuel elsewhere defeats the President’s proclaimed intention for TOR and the economy of Ghana. Instead of giving priority to domestic refining of Ghana’s indigenous crude oil, government is rather resorting to gambling on the importation of liquid fuels without giving a thought to the guarantee of sufficient and reliable supply of same.

Government’s sudden appetite for imported fuels to address reliability and cost related issues can best be described as reactionary, morally indefensible, misplaced priority, and a deliberate attempt to increase the fiscal burden of the Ghanaian economy. It must be stated forcefully that “the state is better off prioritizing local crude refining, instead of importation of refined products.”

Mr. President, it may interest Ghanaians to know the status of the negotiation between TOR and the strategic partner announced some months ago, and for that matter when the refinery is re-commencing operation after several months of inactivity.

Once more, the Institute for Energy Security (IES) wishes to appeal to the President to look within— bring back TOR in the shortest possible time, refine Ghana’s crude domestically, work to strengthen the local currency, and ensure an adequate amount of Dollars is made available to importers of fuel.

  • Nick Cannon expecting 11th baby

Nick Cannon is getting ready to add baby No. 11 to his brood. On Thursday (Nov. 4), model Alyssa Scott announced she and the television host are expecting their second child together.

“This is a MIRACLE & a BLESSING,” she wrote on Instagram alongside a sultry photo baring her growing baby bump. In the snap, Scott stands fully nude in the bathtub with her body in profile as Cannon gazes up at her from below.

As it turns out, Scott loved the photo so much, she even had it turned into a painting, writing, “Thank you to my beautiful & talented friend @glorydayyys for recreating and recapturing this very special moment. This will forever be my favorite piece of artwork” on a separate post showing off the art.

In a third post, Cannon is pictured sweetly kissing Scott’s bump while she has her hair wrapped in a fluffy white towel.

Neither Scott nor Cannon have yet to share an official due date for their coming bundle of joy, but the baby will be the couple’s first child since the tragic death of their firstborn Zen, who died last December at just 5 months old due to an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Since Zen’s death, his famous dad — who practices “consensual non-monogamy” — has also welcomed son Legendary Love with Bre Tiesi, daughter Onyx Ice with Lanisha Cole, and 10th child Rise Messiah with Brittany Bell, all in the span of a few months.

  • Why Okudzeto Ablakwa thinks Akufo-Addo’s economy address was ‘wasteful’

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the NDC’s MP for the North Tongu Constituency, has emphasized that it is dishonorable for President Nana Akufo-Addo to avoid taking responsibility for the nation’s current economic problems in his address to the nation.

The outspoken politician claimed that the President’s economic speech was “wasteful” since he failed to fire some inept administrators from his administration in an interview with NEAT FM’s morning show “Ghana Montie”.

He said to host Akwesi Aboagye, “Prior to the speech, the President should have removed his Finance Minister.”

The North Tongu member added that a lean government is now more important than ever given Ghana’s chaotic economy.

“I am disappointed President Akufo-Addo didn’t take responsibility and apologised to the people for taking them through excruciating pain.

“Countries with good leadership and sound policies are having a resilient economy in these times.

“We need a lean government in these times. 40% of appointees in this government can go,” Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa added.

  • Sulley Muntari finally breaks silence on slapping incident at 2014 World Cup, apologizes to Mospaka

Ghanaian football legend, Sulley Ali Muntari has issued a heartfelt apology to the owner of Medeama Sporting Club, Moses Armah Parker who was a victim of his rage during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Muntari says that immediately after the incident in the Black Stars hotel in Brazil, he felt remorseful and has been looking for an opportunity to say sorry to the former Black Stars Management Committee member.

The former AC Milan midfielder explained that he had nothing personal against Mospaka but was forced to react after bottling up a lot of issues.

Muntari extended the apology to the family of the renowned businessman as he believes his actions might have caused them some discomfort.

I never had the chance to talk to him but I don’t think I had problems with him during the World cup. It was a pile of a lot of things that led to me bursting out. I’m someone who doesn’t talk and when I work, I work really hard.

“I don’t disrespect elders so it will take a lot of things for me to react unfortunately, he was sitting in front of me and things got really bad. Immediately it happened, and I felt really bad. I wasn’t thinking just about him but his daughter, his family, his wife, and all those things. It’s not right for someone to disrespect their father. I’ve looking for him to apologize to him for my behavior at that time but I have not seen him yet.

I will use this opportunity to apologize to him. I disgraced him and made people ridicule him. It was not intentional to do something like that. Whenever I see him, I will find a way to apologize to him directly. He is an elder and I’ve been looking for him for a long time. I’ve no bad feelings about him. It was not him but the situation,” he said.

Sulley Muntari also opened up on the things that led to the outburst and furor at the World Cup in Brazil.

Muntari who would not want to blame anyone hinted that the players were frustrated with the failure of the FA and government to fulfill the promises they made to the players.

According to him, the players would have been satisfied if the authorities were candid and honest with them instead of playing hide-and-seek with them.

“It’s like you keep on stabbing someone and not let the persons bleed. We sacrificed a lot and this is what we do for a living. I’m not saying you shouldn’t get paid but tell us that I’m not giving it to you today, I will give it to you next two days. Next two days, you give it to me but if I come and you say next three days, people are human,” he told Dan Kwaku Yeboah TV.

It will be recalled that Sulley Muntari allegedly assaulted Mospaka during a meeting between the leadership of the Black Stars players and the management committee.

Muntari was subsequently handed an indefinite suspension from the Black Stars. He has not played for the team since that incident in 2014. ”

  • ECOWAS Bank raises authorised capital to US$3.5 billion

With effect from January 2023, the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development’s (EBID) board of directors overwhelmingly enhanced the bank’s authorized capital from US$1.5 billion to US$3.5 billion.

The third tranche of the bank’s capital, totaling $438 million, was likewise requested by the governors.

This decision was made by the board, which consists of the finance and planning ministers from each of the 15 ECOWAS member states, at its just concluded 10th special session, which was held in Praia, Republic of Cabo Verde, on October 27, 2022.

The president and chairman of the board of EBID, Dr George Agyekum Donkor, made this disclosure immediately after the session. According to Donkor, the decision by the governors was very strategic and timely, especially as the bank intensifies its resource mobilisation initiatives and seeks to position itself as the foremost regional development finance institution committed to playing a key and expansive role in assisting ECOWAS member states to navigate the path to socio-economic recovery from the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian – Ukraine war.

Outlining the justifications for the governors’ decision, Donkor emphasised the need for the bank to improve leverage, capital adequacy, liquidity, and the overall risk-bearing capacity.

He stressed on the need for the bank to be abreast with industry trends and improve its rating.

According to him, calling the third tranche of the bank’s capital will no doubt enhance its capacity to grant concessionary resources to member states in order to accelerate economic recovery.

The chairman of the board of governors, who is also the Vice-prime minister for finance and business development and minister for the digital economy of Cabo Verde, Dr Olavo Avelino Garcia Correia, commended the president of the bank and his team for the remarkable and exceptional performance within a short time which has led to the impressive operational and financial performance of EBID and the eventual upgrade of the bank’s rating by both Moody’s and Fitch rating agencies.

He urged the EBID management not to rest on its oars but to strive to obtain investment grade to attract competitive resources for ECOWAS members.

  • ‘Business is tough, the economy is tough’ – Kennedy Agyapong laments

Kennedy Agyapong, a member of parliament from Assin Central, acknowledged that the current economic climate is challenging, particularly for SMEs.

The outspoken congressman demanded immediate action by reconsidering plans, policies, and programs to guarantee Ghana gets weaned off contributions and outside help without going into detail about the facts of his accusation.

On the Morning Show segment of Net2 TV’s October 25 broadcast, Agyapong made a statement.

“The economy is tough and business is tough. I would be dishonest if I sat here and claimed differently. I have to acknowledge that times are difficult.

“But there is hope and what we should bear in mind is that it is situations like this that births inventions and innovations,” he stressed.

He said Ghana needs to reset and recalibrate economic models because “everyone the world over is taking care of themselves and to that end, we cannot depend solely on donations and handouts. It is time to review our policies and programmes and be bold.”

He related to pragmatic policies citing the touted policies of Dan Lartey’s Great Consolidated Popular Party, GCPP, and the Acheampong era. “We should put policies in place to help us live as normal human beings created by God.

He also referred to a list of imports and how much it costs, advancing thus, “let us address the importation of certain goods, import substitutions and build more factories,” citing how the 1D1F projects can help build an export-oriented economy as compared to the import-dependent one Ghana is grappling with.

Later that morning, a group of NPP MPs held a press conference demanding the removal of the Finance Minister over his management of the economy and the hard times that citizens were facing.

President Akufo-Addo intervened and got a concession on two grounds, that the Minister be allowed to conclude initial talks with the International Monetary Fund and present the 2022 budget and see to passage of its appropriation.

  • ‘Ken Must Go’ now a Majority Caucus agenda – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

According to majority leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the entire majority caucus in parliament now supports calls to fire finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

He asserts that the whole Majority Caucus now supports the group’s stance, despite the fact that the issue was originally raised by over 90 NPP MPs who organized a news conference to demand the resignation of the troubled minister or else they would boycott any government activity in the House.

The Suame MP speaking at a news conference on Thursday, November 3, 2022, explained, “even though the issue started with the group of 80 plus, the caucus meeting aligned with the position of that group, so it is no longer the cause of the 80 plus MPs. It is the agenda for the entire caucus and we are having some discussions on that.”

The Majority Leader who is also the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs had earlier stated on Accra-based Joy FM that there had been an attempt by a wealthy businessman to influence the MPs who organised the press conference to back down on their decision.

“I’m told on authority that some businessman came here and tried to do something. I was told that he came here and tried to mediate in his own way what he thinks the problem is…he was repelled by the people and told he was told not to involve himself. So he went away,” Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu told Joy News in an interview.

“With particular reference to the attempted bribery, it’s come before me. We’ll investigate if it is true and if it is true, establish the motive of that person. Sometimes, these things come up.

“You remember the issue of a minister who was nominated to appear before the vetting committee. There was an allegation that he had attempted to bribe some people or influence some people. Eventually, it turned out to be – I will not say falsehood – but an untruth,” he stated further.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo Economic crisis: ‘I have been through pains and aches’ – Ken Ofori-Atta admitshad already appealed to the NPP MPs to allow Ken Ofori-Atta to stay in office until the IMF negotiations and the 2023 Budget statement is presented.

He made this appeal in a meeting with the MPs at the Jubilee House shortly after they held the October 25 press conference to demand the sacking of Mr. Ofori-Atta.

  • Affordable fuel starts with a revived TOR – Institute for Energy Security

According to the energy think tank Institute for Energy Security (IES), a well-retooled Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) might provide Ghanaians with much-needed relief in the face of a growing economic crisis that has seen pump prices of fuel products soar by more than 100% this year.

There is no better time than now to properly modernize the ailing refinery, according to the report, since this might be crucial in changing the country’s economic fortunes in the present economic context where governments are increasingly seeking for more domestic solutions to weather the storm.

The IES’s remarks follow claims that senior government officials had to leave the country’s borders in search of what they called “stable and regular sources of economical petroleum products.”

The IES, therefore, believes that government’s continual appetite for reliable and affordable fuel elsewhere defeats the president’s proclaimed intention for TOR and the economy of Ghana.

“Instead of giving priority to domestic refining of Ghana’s indigenous crude oil, government is rather resorting to gambling on the importation of liquid fuels without giving a thought to the guarantee of sufficient and reliable supply of same,” an IES statement said.

It said the search for that heavily discounted fuel price from elsewhere is an unrealistic hope, and the team may return empty handed unless the expectation/request is exchanged with something valuable to the would-be supplier.

“It is shocking to hear that the energy ministry is actually leading a group roaming the world looking for reliable and regular sources of affordable petroleum products for Ghanaians, abandoning its role of urgently bringing TOR into an operational mode to provide that reliability for an uninterrupted supply of fuel to the country,” the statement further lamented.

It also described government’s sudden appetite for imported fuels to address reliability and cost-related issues at the expense of revamping the country’s only refinery as reactionary, morally indefensible, a misplaced priority and a deliberate attempt to increase the Ghanaian economy’s fiscal burden.

Rather, it noted, the search for a reliable and affordable source of petroleum products starts with the Tema Oil Refinery, which has been down since March 2021 due to lack of crude oil – the refinery’s main raw material.

The statement, signed by Fritz Moses – a research analyst at IES, insisted that the state is better-off prioritising local crude refining instead of importing refined products.

“It beats one’s imagination how an oil-producing country with a refinery capacity of 45,000 barrels per stream day (bpsd) will have its top government officials abandon its domestic competitive advantage and rather seek to import refined petroleum product from elsewhere in the name of reliability and affordability,” part of the statement said.

“Once more, the Institute for Energy Security (IES) wishes to appeal to the president to look within – bring back TOR in the shortest possible time, refine Ghana’s crude domestically, work to strengthen the local currency, and ensure an adequate amount of dollars is made available to importers of fuel,” it further added.

  • Economic crisis: Full-time workers adding ‘side-hustles’ to survive

One would have thought that corporate workers doing full-time jobs would opt to use their weekends and other free time to take some rest. But that is far from the present situation, as workers are now adding more work to maintain their standard of living.

Data from Ghana Statistical Services show that consumer inflation has further increased to 37.2 percent in September 2022 – inching ever-closer to the 40 percent mark last seen in the early 2000s. The annual inflation rate accelerated for the 16th straight month by 4.7 percentage points from 33.9 percent in August, the highest reading since June of 2001 when inflation recorded 36.8 percent. This makes it the highest rate recorded in 243 months, equivalent to 21 years, three months.

The increase in price pressures continue to be fuelled by elevated petroleum and transport costs, as well as higher food costs and a weakening local currency.

The current economic hardships, characterised by hikes in price of almost every commodity on the market, has eroded the value of consumers’ income; thereby creating uncertainty about the future. This has compelled some of workers to engage in various small businesses to beef-up their income to survive.

Some who spoke to the B&FT said the move has become necessary, as their regular income is no longer able to cater for all their needs.

A journalist for an Accra-based online news platform, Beyonce Diamond Kpogli, says the only way she is surviving is by taking on additional side-jobs – the preparation and sale of chilli-sauce, popularly known as shito.

“Without my side-business, I don’t know what would have happened to me now. I prepare chilli-sauce (shito) and sell. I also work with a borehole drilling company as a social media manager.

“I engage in other businesses due to the current standard of living in the country. Things are really expensive; and with what I earn from corporate work, I cannot survive on it alone,” Ms. Kpogli said.

Rahmat Sulaiman, a public servant, works full-time and also runs a mobile money business as a merchant – and also sells fragrances and veils on the side to support her salary.

According to her, it is due to hardship and the unstable economic conditions that she has had to stress to work so much.

“Times are very hard, and I am unable to survive on my salary. When the salary comes in at the end of the month, it can get finished in about week because of how prices of commodities have shot up and keep increasing each day. If I wasn’t doing all these businesses, I don’t know how I would survive.”

She also lamented that even though there are constant price hikes in commodities, salaries are not being raised – a situation she said is worrying.

Asked how she manages to combine all these duties, Rahmat said she mostly does it remotely. For instance, with the mobile money, she facilitates transactions for her colleagues and operates at home, too, when she closes from work and during weekends. The fragrances and veils, she said, are done online based on orders.

Inna Hajar Osman’s story is no different. She is currently a process clerk at the Judicial Service of Ghana, but also planning on starting a small online business aside from her job. Before she got her job at the Judicial Service she was running a small food business; however, she was sent to a different region, which made her quit the food business.

According to her, her current salary is not enough; and so adding a business will enable her to cater for her needs and also enhance her savings.

She said: “My monthly salary is not dependable; it vanishes into thin air after I receive it. So if I should add any side-business, it will help sustain me before my salary comes in; and I will even be able to save”.

  • Govt unlikely to present 2023 Budget due to IMF talks – Majority leader

Majority leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has hinted at a postponement of the 2023 Budget Statement and the Economic Policy reading scheduled to take place on November 15, 2022.

According to the Majority leader, a new date may have to be set as the government is yet to conclude its negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Speaking to the media, the Suame Member of Parliament noted that a delegation from the Fund is expected in the country in the next few weeks to continue its negotiations as a Staff-Level Agreement remains pending.

“But if you want to do tidy work, you may be required to have some space to be able to do a tidy job. Because as you all know, these are not normal times. Nothing should be done which will eventually become wishy-washy. They want to have the best to be able to uplift us from where we are as a country. And that being the case, if we want to do a thorough job, I think there will be too much pressure if it has to be done on the 15th,” he said on Thursday, November 3, 2022.

“We want more time to interrogate the principles underpinning the budget,” Mr Osei-Kyei-Mensah added.

This would be the third time a delegation from the Fund has visited the country to analyse the country’s economic situation and iron out its issues.

The 2023 budget statement will inform the Ghanaian citizenry of government’s plans, with regards to its revenue generation measures and its expenditure next year.

While addressing the nation last weekend, President Akufo-Addo admitted that the 2022 budget has already been thrown out of gear due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and  the Russia-Ukraine war.

He said the crises have exposed the structural weaknesses of the economy.

Meanwhile, the Majority leader has posited that the government’s inability to present the 2023 Budget Statement on November 15, will not be in breach of the procedure since the constitution provides November 30 as the deadline for the presentation of the budget statement.

However, Section 21(3), of the Public Financial Management Act, 2016, ACT 971, states that “the Minister shall, on behalf of the President, lay before Parliament not later than the 15th of November of each financial year, estimates of the revenues and expenditure of the Government, the annual budget, for the ensuing financial year.”

Meanwhile, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who doubles as the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, will engage Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta on the possible new date and revert with a communiqué on whatever conclusion is reached.

Government reached out to the IMF in July and later commenced engagement in September this year.

Ghana is hoping to reach a Staff-Level agreement with the IMF by the end of the year, after both parties agreed upon a clear path towards the final details of an economic programme in October.

  • We don’t have mandate to regulate fuel prices – NPA

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has shutdown calls by some Ghanaians, to regulate the fast-rising fuel prices at the pumps.

On Monday, October 31, 2022, some Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) adjusted their prices upwards, selling petrol and diesel for about GHS 14 and GHS 18 per litre respectively.

In less than 24 hours, fuel prices hit an all-time high, with petrol selling at about GHS18 per litre and diesel retailing at over GHS 23.

In light of the new price window, agitated Ghanaians called on the NPA to regulate and stabilize fuel prices.

Responding to the call, the NPA has stated that the Authority is not mandated to determine or stabilize the price of petroleum products at the pump.

Speaking to the media, the Communications Manager at NPA, Mohammed Abdul Kudus, disclosed that the mandate to regulate prices of fuel was abolished after the NPA ACT was amended in 2005.

“It appears that people are still living in the past of what they knew the NPA to be prior to 2015 because the determination of the pricing has actually been taken away from NPA, and so we virtually can be called a Police and that still cloaks us with the responsibility of regulation.”

“Regulation is just not about the determination of the prices, but the regulation also involves how the prices are arrived at and that is one critical role that we play at NPA.”

Per the NPA ACT 2005, the object of the Authority is to regulate, oversee and monitor activities in the petroleum downstream industry and where applicable do so in pursuance of the prescribed petroleum pricing formula.

To achieve these objectives, the NPA is mandated to monitor ceilings on the price of petroleum products in accordance with the prescribed petroleum pricing formula.

The Authority, among other things, is also obligated to provide guidelines for petroleum marketing operations; protect the interests of consumers and petroleum service providers.

  • 2022 World Cup: Criticism and negativity about Black Stars must stop – CK Akonnor to Ghanaians

Former Ghana coach CK Akonnor has entreated Ghanaian to desist from criticizing and spewing negativity about the Black Stars ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Ghana is returning to the global showpiece after missing out in Russia 2018.

Prior to the tournament in the Asian country, the West African powerhouse has engaged in two international friendlies against Brazil and Nicaragua during the break.

Ghana lost 3-0 to Brazil and recovered to beat Nicaragua 1-0 on Tuesday in Spain through a strike from Abdul Fatawu Issahaku.

Speaking on Prime Take on Joy News channel, the former Ghana international entreated Ghanaians not to panic ahead of the mundial.

“I think we should not panic,” CK says.

“We have been to the World Cup three times, and this is the fourth time we are going. We have played some of the best teams in the world and we are going to meet teams we have played before so we shouldn’t panic.

“If you lose to Brazil…yes 3-0 is a bit on a high but this is Brazil, the favourites to win the World Cup; we won against Nicaragua, not too convincing, but we won.

“It is positive for the team. Let’s pick on the positives; from now onwards, the idea of criticizing, and saying negative things about the team should stop,” he admonished.

Ghana has been housed in Group H at the mundial against Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea.

The Black Stars will open their World Cup account against Portugal on November 24 before taking on Uruguay and South Korea respectively.

The biggest soccer mundial has been scheduled for November and December this year, with 32 countries set to battle it out for the covetous trophy in Qatar.

  • Invest in tech for women businesses to drive a digitized economy – Experts

The elimination of preexisting biases and the prioritization of targeted investment in women-owned enterprises are requirements for major players in policy and finance, among others, in order to fully reap the rewards of the digital economy.

Speaking on the topic of “Technology, Gender and Economic Growth: Expanding the Role of Technology in Women-Owned Business for Development” at the recently concluded Standard Chartered Digital Banking Innovation and FinTech Festival, a panel of experts expressed the opinion that, despite the enormous potential and significance of women-led businesses to economic transformation, their adoption of technology as an enabler remains woefully insufficient.

During the session moderated by Standard Chartered’s Regional Head, Corporate Affairs Brand and Marketing, Africa & Middle East, Khadija Hashimi, the shortage of women in key decision-making positions was highlighted as one of the primary reasons women-led businesses receive disproportionately less funding than their male counterparts.

Citing a recent study conducted by her outfit which surveyed 2,000 startups over five years, the Director of Special Projects at Village Capital, Rachel Crawford said the phenomenon can be attributed to “who is making decisions and how they are making decisions.”

“We will have to do things a little differently, and that would involve putting more women into decsionmaking roles as it relates to who receives financing. It is not that men are unable to do this it is just that traditionally, there might be some subconscious biases that lead to women-led businesses appearing more risky,” she said.

Her thoughts are consistent with a number of studies including a Briter Bridges report which showed that even in industries where they are dominant, female founders receive disproportionately less investment than their male counterparts.

Between 2013 and 2021, around 1,100 startups raised US$1.7 billion in early-stage funding. All-male founding teams, however, received US$25 for every US$1 that went to all-female founder teams.

Furthermore, in contrast to the over 75 percent received by male founder teams, all-female founding teams of the businesses examined garnered fewer than 10 percent of the total capital raised in the edtech sector.

Whilst encouraging women to highlight the opportunities their solutions present as opposed to the associated risks they are often asked about, the Chief Executive Officer, Edel Consulting, Ethel D. Cofie, called on financial institutions to build shared technology resources, saying there’ll be benefits accrued from economies of scale and centralised data.

“I would like Standard Chartered and related entities to consider building shared technology resources… if you had a shared accounting or fintech platform, it would mean that you are taking some of the cost but that means that they are providing data, so in the event that they come to you for money, you have a sense of who they are and what they are doing and that will give you a competitive edge,” she explained.

The rising number of successful women in the tech ecosystem and the success of the usage of tools such as social media in promoting women-led businesses has dispelled the notion that women are technology averse, Co-Founder of Superfluid Labs, Winnifred Kotin, added.

Encouraging more investment she said, “Technology has changed the business landscape forever as the competition is now global. Technology should be used as an enabler of growth,” adding that networking at events such as Standard Chartered Digital Banking Innovation and FinTech Festival remains a valuable tool.

CEO at Taqwa Invest (UAE), and beneficiary of the Standard Chartered Women in Tech Incubator, Dr. Areeba Khan, called on women to take advantage of all the resources available to them to improve their understanding and application of technology in their businesses.

Held in collaboration with SC Ventures (Innovation and Fintech Investment Unit of Standard Chartered), the Fintech Festival is an avenue for important financial services industry players, including FinTechs, to highlight Ghana’s digital infrastructure and the significant advancements the nation has made on the road toward national digitalization.

  • Trotro drivers defy GPRTU directive, increase transport fares by over 40%

Public transport operators have once again defied the Ghana Private Road Transport Union’s (GPRTU) directive to increase fares by 19 percent to cushion themselves from the high cost of fuel products.

Commuters are now bearing the brunt of the incessant rise in the prices of fuel products as a whopping 40 percent increment, at least, has been slapped on fares, The Independent Ghana can confirm.

Some bus terminals that are observing this gross misconduct include Lapaz bus terminal and Circle bus terminal.

Before the GPRTU’s 19 percent increment, a trip from Lapaz to Mile 7 cost GH3.60. Following the 19 percent implementation on October 29, 2022, the fare rose to GH4.50.

On November 1, the fare was adjusted again and a trip which cost GH4.50 is now GH4.95, nearly GH5, the amount transport operators are currently demanding.

A trip from Lapaz to Mile has increased by GH1.40, representing a 40 percent increment.

Again, a trip from Taifa to Mile 7 used to go for GH3, but after a 19 percent increment was implemented, the fare increased to GH3.80, instead of GH3.60, to reflect an actual 19 per cent increment.

On November 3, transport operators charged GH5 for a trip from Taifa to Mile 7, representing a 67% increase.

A critical look at the Circle bus terminal, shows that transport fares have also increased by 40 percent, as observed at the aforementioned.

Prior to the GPRTU’s directive, moving from Pigfarm to Circle cost GH3.50. With a 19 per cent implementation, the trip should cost GH4.20, however, public transport operators are currently charging GH5.

Commuters moving to Dome from Madina used to pay GHS5.50 before GPRTU announced an increase in transport fares. Transport operators now charged GHS7 for the same trip, violating the 19 percent increment directive.

At a 19 percent rate, a trip from Madina to Dome should cost GH6.50. Currently, commuters are being charged GHS8.50, representing a whopping 55 percent increase.

It has been observed that the new fare has been pinned on the Ghana Private Road Transport Union.

This debunks comments by the GPRTU that public transport operators are implementing the new agreed fares.

“The law-abiding drivers are complying with the 19 percent increment in fares. Until we finish the negotiations, I think we should be law-abiding and take it easy until we all finalize on that, “ Abass Imoro, Industrial Relations Officer of GPRTU, told the media.

According to some frustrated drivers in the Greater Accra Region, they will review their prices anytime there is a fuel increment in the country.

Ghanaians who have fallen victim to this exploitation have registered their displeasure on social media, and have called on the GPRTU to intervene.

Prior to the recent increase in transport fares, the GPRTU, owing to the incessant rise in price of fuel products, demanded a 40 percent increment from the government, but after engagements, the Union and the Transport Ministry settled on a 19 percent increment.

Currently, a litre of petrol is going for about GHS18, and that for diesel, close to GHS24.

Calls made by the Independent Ghana to the leadership of GPRTU on November 3, over the matter, were unsuccessful.

  • Today in History: Ghana to assemble trains locally – Joe Ghartey

Joe Ghartey, a former minister for railway development, stated that Ghana will start building trains domestically.

The minister declared, “We aim to develop a local indigenous railroad industry.”

We want to get to the point where, at the very least in Ghana, we can put together coaches soon, he continued.

Minister of Railways Development, Joe Ghartey, has revealed that government is planning to begin assembling trains locally.

The move, he said, forms part of activities aimed at moving Ghana beyond aid and growing an indigenous railway industry that can rub shoulders with those of South Africa and other countries outside Africa.

Mr. Ghartey, who has for nearly two years been actively spearheading the transformation of Ghana’s once ‘dead’ railway sector, was speaking to journalists on Friday on the sidelines of a tour to the Tema-Accra railway line.

The tour, which had in attendance members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Transport, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Member of Parliament for Suame Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, was to afford master artisans from Suame Magazine the opportunity to access the state of abandoned coaches at the Tema Harbour railway station and the Ghana Railway Company Limited DMU workshop.

The artisans from Suame Magazine have accordingly expressed interest in collaborating with the Ghana Railway Company Limited to refurbish the broken down coaches.

According to the minister, “We want to grow a local indigenous railway industry.”

He added, “We want to come to a situation where not too long from now we will be able to assemble coaches at least in Ghana.”

    Vision is to dominate Africa

The minister was clear on President Akufo-Addo’s vision for the railway sector, and that he said is to dominate the African railway industry.

“We are determined that in Africa, we will become the best in terms of railway sector,” Mr. Ghartey indicated.

    Challenge

But the minister is fully aware of the enormous tasks involved in making the Ghanaian railway sector the best on the African sub-continent.

As a result, he has thrown a challenge to the management and staff of the Ghana Railway Company to work extra hard and ensure that they adhere to rules on global best practices.

    Warning

He has, therefore, warned railway workers nationwide to desist from illegal acts such as offering lands along the railways to individuals for settlement.

Mr. Ghartey stated that there are about 30 to 40 broken down coaches that have been abandoned for years.

He stated that upon assuming office, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government was confronted with several proposals to sell off such broken coaches as scrap materials, but he added that government declined the proposals and made a conscious effort to rehabilitate some of the coaches.

About 15 of the coaches were earmarked for refurbishment and government is also seeking to ensure that each refurbished coach has air conditions to ensure passengers’ comfort.

But as government is working tirelessly to transform the sector, the minister lamented that some individuals “are actively stealing.”

He, therefore, warned those in the habit of stealing to desist from such acts, adding that “we have to protect state property, you can’t dissipate state property.”

    Tema-Achimota train service

The minister pointed out tremendous changes taking place in the country’s railway sector, and was optimistic that within a week or so from now, a test run will commence on the Tema-Achimota railway line to set the pace for fully resuming passenger service on that line which came to halt due to accident sometime back.

    Budget

The Managing Director of Ghana Railway Company Limited, John Essel, told DAILY GUIDE that a total of GH¢1.5 million has been budgeted for the refurbishment of the 15 coaches, pointing out that so far less than GH¢1 million has been spent on procuring materials for the refurbishment.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that some of the refurbished coaches at the DMU workshop are first and second class.

The chief mechanical engineer of the Ghana Railway Company Limited, Alfred Selby, told this paper that the second class coaches have 96 seats whilst first class ones have 56 seats.

  • Hushpuppi broke rules, Instagram says after suspension

Instagram has told the BBC that they deactivated the account of the Nigerian influencer and high profile international fraudster, Hushpuppi, because he broke their rules on fraud.

“We don’t want anyone to use our apps to defraud or exploit people, and have clear rules against fraudulent activity – including money laundering,” a spokesperson from Meta, which owns Instagram, said in a statement.

“We disabled @hushpuppi’s account for breaking these rules,” the statement continued.

Hushpuppi, whose real name is Ramon Abbas, used to post luxurious images on his Instagram, displaying his expensive lifestyle to his 2.8 million followers.

But that luxury lifestyle came to an abrupt end after he was arrested in Dubai, where he lived, in June 2020.

Less than a year later, he pleaded guilty to money laundering in a US court and is considered to be one of the world’s most high-profile fraudsters, according to the FBI.

Unsealed court documents showed that in his last plot, he tried to to steal more than $1.1m ($960m) from someone who wanted to build a school in Qatar.

He had a network all over the world, with some of his schemes spreading from Malta to Mexico.

Documents filed in California say that his’ crimes cost nearly $24m, and he now faces a potential 20 year jail sentence.

Despite Hushpuppi’s guilty plea last year, Instagram had not taken down his account at the time, saying they had investigated and decided not to close it.

The current deactivation of his account was first picked up by Nigerian media on Sunday.

Meta’s rules on fraud says they try to “prevent fraudulent activity that can harm people or businesses”.

  • Business conditions deteriorate sharply in October

The private sector of Ghana’s economy continued to significantly deteriorate in October, with output, new orders, input inventories, and employment all seeing accelerating declines.
In their remarks, the panelists hinted at the serious consequences of worsening cedi-dollar exchange rates, which they claimed had an impact on customer demand.
As a result, mood reached its lowest point in more than two and a half years, and businesses also expressed concern about the global macroeconomic environment.

Prices data, on the other hand, indicated significant rates of input-cost inflation, with purchase charges being particularly high.
However, the rate of overall input price inflation slowed down, but the rate of increase in selling prices picked up speed.
In reality, only August’s increase in output charges was higher than the current pace of growth.

The S&P Global Ghana Purchasing Managers’ Index™ posted below the neutral value of 50.0 for the ninth month in a row (44.0 in October from 45.6 in September), signalling another deterioration in business conditions. The latest result was the third-weakest in the survey’s history, exceeded only by that seen during the pandemic’s height in March and April 2020.

Central to the latest deterioration were accelerated falls in output and new orders. In fact, the rates of declines in both cases were the most pronounced since the pandemic’s initial phase (in March and April 2020), and the third-steepest in the survey’s history. According to panel comments, clients were deterred from placing orders in light of high prices. Firms scaled back their output levels in response to weaker demand.

Lower output requirements led firms to reduce their purchasing activity sharply, with the rate of decline quickest since April 2020. Pre-production inventory holdings were also cut, amid growing pressure on firms’ profits and weaker inflows of new work.

Ghanaian firms also reduced their headcounts during the month, with the rate of decline solid and the quickest since June 2020. Recent pressure on costs led firms to scale back on workforces, but they also blamed a lack of new orders.

Outstanding business at Ghanaian private sector firms fell, signaling ten consecutive months of decline. Moreover, the rate of backlog depletion was sharp and the quickest since March. Subdued demand conditions allowed firms to work through their incomplete work.

Vendor performance improved in October, signalling the fifteenth successive month of improvement. That said, lead times shortened at the weakest rate since start of the year.

Purchase costs continued to rise markedly, despite inflation softening to a three-month low. The rise was overwhelmingly linked to unfavourable cedi-dollar exchange rate movements. Despite moderating to a three-month low, the overall rate of input price inflation was substantial. In response, firms hiked their selling charges at the second-fastest rate in the survey’s history, with the latest increase outpaced only by that seen in August.

Ghanaian businesses foresee an expansion in output by October 2023, with firms hopeful that market conditions will stabilise and price pressures will ease. That said, the degree of optimism was weakest since start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.

Shreeya Patel, Economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence said: “The latest PMI data for Ghana signalled another marked deterioration in business conditions at start of the fourth quarter. Output and new orders fell sharply, with the rates of decline among the quickest in the survey’s history and surpassed only by those seen during the pandemic’s initial phase in March and April 2020. Consequently, firms grew less optimistic of their output expectations over the year-ahead, and cut their headcounts solidly.

“Recent performance largely reflected the unfavourable cedi-dollar exchange rate movements, which exerted upward pressure on costs and selling prices. The higher revisions to selling prices deterred customers from placing orders in October.

“The Ghanaian economy has struggled over the last year or so, and latest data suggests the troubling trading conditions are set to persist. Recent currency weakness has pushed the economy deeper into contraction territory, with businesses showing increased concern over the current environment. For now, firms hope that the currency recovers and price pressures subside.”

  • Richard Kingston hopes Black Stars can surpass 2010 World Cup feat in Qatar

Former Ghana goalkeeper Richard Kingston is hoping the Black Stars can surpass the 2010 World Cup feat in Qatar.

The Black Stars is returning to the global showpiece after missing out in Russia 2018, where France emerged as winners

In an interview, Kingston, who was part of the 2010 squad says he is hoping the current Black Stars team can surpass their quarterfinal berth at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

“Personally, I have belief in the Black Stars team but I cannot assure that we are going to win the trophy but I am hoping that we will surpass the quarterfinal berth in 2010 so that I, as the goalkeepers’ trainer will set a new record”

“This tournament is very important to me because I want to set a new record and because of that I have told my goalkeepers that I got to the quarterfinals with the Black Stars, so they have to break my record so I can set a new record”

The former Blackpool shot stopper is currently the goalkeepers coach of the Black Stars.

Ghana were denied a semifinal berth at the World Cup courtesy of a Luis Suarez handball incident in the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The West African powerhouse were also awarded a penalty, but Asamoah Gyan’s attempt from 12 yards crashed into the crossbar, which resulted in Suarez going mental on the touchline and sent the game to a shootout.

Uruguay won the penalty shoot-out to progress to the semifinals with Luis Suarez celebrated for his demonic act.

  • 5 personal survival strategies for managing high cost of living in Ghana

Ghana’s annual inflation rate increased from 33.9% in August to 37.2% in September 2022, marking the 16th consecutive month of growth.
Because of Ghana’s high rate of inflation, prices for products and services are rising quickly and outpacing wage growth.

Indeed, inflation can have a detrimental effect on quality of life, particularly for people with lower earnings who must constantly contend with the rise in transportation, food, sachet water, etc. that comes along with it.

I think there are some decisions you can make to help you protect yourself from the effects of significant price increases, such as creating a personal budget and spending plan that details where you shop, what you eat, where you save, and what kind of savings you make.

I recommend the following personal survival strategies for managing the high cost of living.

    Reassess your Spending Habits

The rising inflation rate has made it difficult for anyone to stay within their budget, as most Ghanaians’ spending habits have changed in response to the high inflation. I have personally adopted more conservative spending habits to survive. I am more cautious about handling my finances, and strictly work with a spending plan.

We need to determine expenses we can temporarily do without to ensure the essential needs are covered: like housing, groceries, fuel and utilities. We can reassess the following non-essential expenses: dining out, subscription services, gym memberships, data-usage, etc. Understanding the cost-drivers in our personal lives will be vital during this period.

Increase your Income (start a side-gig)

Finding alternative ways to increase your income will help you survive the high cost of living. Some of the numerous ways to multiply your livelihood include learning a new skill to help you make additional income, and looking for a new or second job.

Starting a side-gig is quite interesting, with a critical focus on your personality, skills, interest and availability. As a business coach, I consider a side-gig not only as an opportunity to earn some extra cash; it can be the key to making ends meet, paying-off debt, and saving and investing more – or sometimes breaking from your day-job. I recommend that you need to take a careful look at your previous experience to determine your strongest skills when starting a side-gig.

    Develop a Saving habit

I know very well that saving money can be difficult, especially during a period of rising prices and cost of living. Digital payments are making it easier to spend, hence easy to lose track of the small purchases that add up over time. It is crucial, especially during this period, to create a budget and track how much you can save by measuring your living costs against your income.

I would advise we change our mindset about by considering it as an essential cost to be put aside monthly. Furthermore, having at least one month’s worth of expenses in your Saving account will help you survive higher costs of living and surprise additional expenses, as well as the regular daily increases in price of goods and services.

    Budgeting is Key

Your budget will provide you with an estimation of revenue and expenses over a specified period, and is usually recompiled and re-evaluated periodically. In order to manage your increasing expenses, there is a need to prepare for unpredictable events and avoid going into debt. It is important to note that keeping track of what you earn and spend helps you understand where your money goes and have greater control over your finances.

Spend Less on Fuel and Drive less

There’s a need to plan your daily route and drive less due to the high fuel prices. I advise we track our daily mileage by creating a log notebook. We should also analyse our driving habits by combining errands when possible, as well as explore alternative forms of transportation if available.

Taking the shortest routes will also be helpful, as well as shopping online and getting to know and understand what is available in the market before driving out to buy items.

  • FLASHBACK: We blame you for our suffering – Gold Coast customers to Akufo-Addo

Customers of Gold Coast Fund Management who were dissatisfied in 2019 accused the president of being to fault for their problems.

“As usual, the administration has declined to reply to the petition that was sent to its office.
Even after numerous follow-ups by this group’s leadership, not even an acknowledgement of receipt, “claimed the group during a news conference.

Some aggrieved customers of the embattled Gold Coast Fund Management (GCFM), now Blackshield Fund Management, has accused President Nana Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government of contributing to their suffering and inability to retrieve investments from the firm, a subsidiary of Groupe Nduom, chaired by Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom.

Groupe Nduom said the government owes some of its subsidiaries some GHS2 billion, a situation that has incapacitated the company from living up to its obligations to its clients.

The government, however, disputes that figure which it puts at about GHS35 million.

At a press conference on Tuesday, 5 November 2019, the group said the government has failed to intervene in the matter and failed to honour its financial obligations to GCFM in order for the firm to advance payments to them.

On the back of a recent protest and petition on 15 October 2019, the group said: “The government, as per its usual posture, has again refused to respond to the petition submitted to its outfit. Not even acknowledgement of receipt even after several follow-ups by the leadership of this group”.

The incensed group members said: “The government of Ghana, under President Akufo-Addo, is partly to be blamed for the pains, the suffering, the mental torture, the sleepless nights and the poor living conditions of GCFM customers”.

They do not understand “the loud silence by the government on our issue”.

The group said the government has also failed to respond to their plea “to pay its indebtedness to Gold Coast Fund Management, a situation the company argues to be the direct reason for their inability to honour their obligations to the customers, which situation had led to indescribable hardship on customers and in some cases even death”.

They are, therefore, requesting the following:

    1. Government should pay immediately, all the interim payment certificates (IPCs) due GCFM and thereafter compel GCFM and Dr Nduom to pay their customers.

    2. Government should raise the IPCs of completed projects for payment.

    3. Government must pay his indebtedness to GCFM or give comfort letters to allow GCFM raise the needed funds to pay their customers.

    4. Government should terminate the appointment of Rev. Daniel Ogbarmey Tetteh for failing to regulate the activities of GCFM, which has culminated in our current predicament.

    5. Government should put on hold all attempts to close down and liquidate GCFM since this situation will rather worsen the already ailing plights of customers.

  • Ghana legend Dan Owusu denies Ayew brothers below belt performance comment

Ghana legend Dan Owusu has denied Andre and Jordan Ayew below belt performance comment and has therefore called on the public to treat it with the needed contempt it deserves.

Earlier report in the media suggested the former Ghana forward has expressed displeasure about the performance of the experience Black Stars attackers ahead of the start of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

But Dan Owusu, who had an enviable career for both club and country rubbished such report, saying he was misquoted.

“I never said the Ayew brothers’ performance is below belt, I was misquoted. I will entreat the public to treat it with the needed contempt it deserves.” he told Footballghana.com in an interview.

“My field is goal scoring and that is where I am keen about. I was of the opinion that, if the strikers are able to score goals, Ghana will go far in the tournament, I didn’t single out the Ayew brothers”

“I only urged them to die for the country because they are also strikers. I just want them to score goals for us because that is the most important thing. Those who did that want to get more engagement on their websites”

“Recently, we had a walk and all legends have declared support for the national team, so why will I spew negative comment about the team” he said.

  • Megan Thee Stallion shoots down inaccurate report about 1501 legal battle

Megan Thee Stallion is squashing misinformation.

The Grammy-winning rapper took to Twitter on Thursday to address a report about her legal battle with 1501 Certified Entertainment, the Houston-based record label that signed her in 2018. Megan sued the company for $1 million earlier this year, claiming her most recent releases—Something for Thee Hotties and August’s Traumazine—fulfilled her contractual obligations and permitted her to cut ties with the imprint.

1501 and its owner, ex-professional baseball player Carl Crawford, argued that October 2021’s Something for Thee Hotties did not count toward Megan’s contract quota, as it only contained 29 minutes of original material.

On Friday, hip-hop blog Fck Yaya shared a legal document indicating a judge had ruled in favor of 1501 and Crawford, determining Something for Thee Hotties did not meet the definition of a 45-minute album.

“The recording known as Something for Thee Hotties does not meet plaintiff/counter-defendant Megan Pete’s p/k/a/ Megan Thee Stallion ‘minimum recording commitment’ or ‘product commitment’ for the second option period under the contracts between the parties,” the document read. “Plaintiff/counter-defendant Megan Pete’s p/k/a Megan Thee Stallion has not yet satisfied her ‘minimum recording commitment’ or ‘product commitment’ for the third optiopn period under the contracts between the parties.”

Megan caught wind of the report and immediately pointed out that the court has yet to make a summary judgment, and the document was released by mistake.

“No judge has ruled anything abt this 1501 case, this information is not accurate,” she tweeted. “The court date for this isn’t even until DECEMBER 12TH…we HAVE NOT went to court and got a summary judgment. Please stop spreading misinformation thanks.”

Meg went on to question why everyone seemed to be “so hype for negative news” and proceeded to post proof that the aforementioned ruling had been voided.

“Not that the truth ever matters to the people who hate on me for engagements online 🤷🏽‍♀️” she wrote, “but Notice of VOID thanks to the COURT for clarifying a mistake.”

Megan Thee Stallion Calls Out Inaccurate Report About 1501 Legal Battle

Megan Thee Stallion Calls Out Inaccurate Report About 1501 Legal Battle

The notice of void judgment read: “On November 2nd, 2022, the court entered a judgement/order on a summary judgement motion that had not been heard and was not ripe for consideration or ruling. On November 3rd, 2022, having become aware of the erroneous judgement/order, the issue was brought to the clerk of the court…the court rendered the ‘judgement/order’ void.”

Also on Thursday, Megan quote-tweeted a since-deleted post presumably referring to 1501, writing that “the men over in that camp haven’t been clearing my music to be synced anywhere (shows, movies, etc) so I ALMOST couldn’t even do my Amazon performance tonight!”

  • FLASHBACK: BoG’s action on collapsed banks saved 3,500 jobs —2nd Deputy Governor

Mrs. Elsie Addo Awadzi, the second deputy governor of the Bank of Ghana, highlighted that 3,500 jobs were preserved as a result of the Central Bank’s decision to dissolve and combine about seven failed banks to form the Consolidated Bank Ghana Ltd.

“The Government’s decision to guarantee the deposits of the seven bankrupt banks, BoG’s measures against those institutions, and the establishment of CBG have all contributed to reducing the severity of the potential negative effects of these collapses.
There are frequently many victims when banks collapse, and if they are not properly managed, this might cause serious issues for the financial system and the overall economy.

The interventions of the BoG and Ministry of Finance (MoF) minimised job losses by saving some 3,500 or 70% of approximately 5000 employees of the defunct banks,” she said.

Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Mrs. Elsie Addo Awadzi, has said that the bank’s intervention on collapsing and merging the seven defunct banks to form the Consolidated Bank Ghana Ltd saved some 3,500 jobs.

Some have called the central bank’s decision to collapse and merge the seven defunct banks ill-timed and disastrous, as it has led to some 1,500 job losses.

But speaking at the Joy FM Financial Sector Forum held in Accra, Mrs. Awadzi justified the central bank’s decision, saying it rather minimised the job losses by 70 percent, which otherwise would have been lost if the action was not promptly taken.

“BoG’s actions against the failed banks and Government’s decision to guarantee the deposits of the seven banks and the creation of CBG have helped to mitigate what could have been severe adverse consequences from these failures. When banks fail, there are usually a lot of casualties which, if not well managed, could lead to significant problems for the financial sector and the economy.

The interventions of the BoG and Ministry of Finance (MoF) minimised job losses by saving some 3,500 or 70% of approximately 5000 employees of the defunct banks,” she said.

See Also: Betway Ghana launches second edition of ‘Talent Search’
She added that the banking sector reforms have boosted the confidence of local and international investors and other market players, and have contributed to the recent upgrades of Ghana’s credit rating by Standards and Poors (S&P) to B- to B.

Also addressing why there was the need to take such strong action against the banks, Mrs. Awadzi said the banks posed a significant risk to the economy and had to be helped to exit the market in an orderly fashion, especially, considering the extent of distress they were in.

“Failed banks become serious sources of risk for the entire financial system and the economy as a whole, and must be made to exit before they collapse the whole system. What happens to the financial system affects everyone.

The defunct banks had reached a point where they were no longer able to operate as banks. 4 of the 7 had been found to be significantly undercapitalized as of the 2015/16, and subsequently became insolvent when their capital was further impaired due to bad loans and other irrecoverable assets.

The other 3 defunct banks obtained their licenses by false pretences through the use of suspicious and non-existent capital, which rendered them significantly undercapitalized compared to the minimum of GH¢120 million they were required to have,” she said.

Going forward, the BoG will continue to strengthen its supervisory and regulatory role to ensure such a situation does not repeat itself.

“On our part, we are strengthening our regulatory and supervisory capacity through improved systems, processes, accountability, and training, to enable our supervision staff to better monitor banks’ performance and conduct, and ensure that banks take prompt corrective action to address emerging risks.

We are working with all stakeholders to rebuild confidence in our banking sector. There are great opportunities ahead for the industry to drive Ghana’s economic growth agenda, and we expect to see banks positioning themselves for these opportunities,” she said.

  • Rennes winger Kamaldeen Sulemana doubtful for Ghana’s World Cup campaign after latest injury

Ghana’s 2022 World Cup campaign is set to suffer a major blow following the injury of Stade Rennes star Kamaldeen Sulemana.

Sulemana is a doubt for the biggest soccer mundial after injuring his ankle in training this week.

The Ghana international has suffered what appears to be a serious injury with 16 days until Ghana’s first game.

But his coach Bruno Genesio is hoping that the enterprising winger will be fit before the start og the mundial in Qatar.

He was not in the matchday squad when Rennes played a 1-1 draw with AEK Larnaca in the final round of the Europa League group stage.
