  • PMI falls to 29-month low in September due to deteriorating business conditions

The third quarter of 2022’s final month showed a significant decline in the business climate in Ghana’s private sector.

The output decreased considerably and at the fastest rate since the pandemic’s beginning in March and April 2020.

However, at a slower rate, new orders also fell substantially.
For the third month in a row, businesses reduced their headcounts in response to weak demand conditions.
Despite this, businesses were optimistic about their longer-term output growth projections.

September saw a resurgence of inflationary pressures, with respondents frequently attributing price increases to adverse changes in the dollar’s exchange rate.

The S&P Global Ghana Purchasing Managers’ Index™ (PMI®) posted below the neutral value of 50.0 for the eighth month in succession, indicating a deterioration in business conditions. At 45.6 in September, down from 45.9 in August, the latest reading was the lowest since April 2020.

The latest deterioration was centred on contractions in both output and new orders, with the former recording a marked and accelerated decrease.

Ghanaian companies reported weak client demand as a result of higher prices which weighed on output growth. Output fell at the third-steepest rate since the survey began in January 2014, surpassed only by those seen during the height of the pandemic in March and April 2020.

Similarly, new orders fell sharply with over a quarter of respondents recording lower inflows of new work in September compared to August. Higher prices reportedly deterred customers from placing orders.

With firms scaling back output levels for the ninth month running, further signs of spare capacity emerged in September. Backlogs have now fallen in each month since the start of the year with the rate of decline the quickest since March. Panel comments indicated reduced workloads allowed firms to work through their backlogs.

With demand conditions weak, and backlogs falling, firms sought to reduce their costs in September by cutting headcounts. Staffing levels have now fallen for three months in a row, although the latest decline was mild.

Lower orders at suppliers allowed vendors to speed-up their deliveries at the end of the third quarter. The extent to which lead times shortened was the third most pronounced in the series, surpassed only by those seen in the previous two survey periods.

Lower activity levels led Ghanaian firms to scale back on their purchasing activity, a fifth successive month in which this has been the case. Moreover, the rate of decline was the quickest in this sequence. Stocks of inventories also fell, albeit only marginally.

Turning to prices, inflationary pressures were rampant once again, despite moderating from August. Unfavourable cedi dollar exchange rate movements exerted upward pressure on costs (including wages), resulting in a substantial uptick in overall input prices.

Rising costs were passed on to clients in the form of higher selling charges. In fact, the increase in output prices was the second-quickest in the series, surpassed only by that seen in the previous survey period.

Finally, despite weak recent performance, firms were hopeful that output growth would return over the coming 12 months. Concerns over price pressures weighed slightly on optimism, however.

Shreeya Patel, Economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said: “Ghana’s private sector faced another challenging month of trading, rounding off the third quarter of 2022 with a sharp deterioration in business conditions. A number of factors were blamed for the decline including weak cedi-dollar exchange rate movements, and a general reluctance to spend at Ghanaian companies.

“Recent months have proven to be challenging, and currency weakness has struck a heavy blow to Ghana’s economy. Overall input costs rose sharply, while selling prices were raised at a near-record rate.

“That said, Ghanaian companies focused on the positives and were generally upbeat about their expectations for output growth. There were hopes that the recent price pressures would stabilise, and demand would eventually improve.”

  • 21% increase in cocoa farm gate price ‘way too small’ – Minority

Ranking Member on the Finance Committee, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson says the 21 percent increase in the producer price for cocoa which has been pegged at GH¢800 per bag is too small.

“That is way too small,” Mr. Forson said in a Citi News interview.

Before this increase, Ghana had last increased its farm gate price in 2020; from GH¢515 to GH¢660.

The Minority had previously called for the farm gate price to be increased to GH¢1000 per bag.

Dr. Forson noted that the Ivory Coast increase was up to the equivalent of over GH¢850 per bag.

“We know in times like this, persons who should benefit most is the one whose currency has depreciated the most. Ghana’s currency has depreciated more than that of the Ivory Coast.”

Despite the Minorty’s criticism, the recent increase was in line with recommendations from some observers in the industry.

The Ghana Civil-Society Cocoa Platform, for example, had proposed a 15 percent to 20 percent increment in the farm gate price of cocoa.

The increase in prices follows COCOBOD securing a syndicated loan of $1.13 billion for the 2022/2023 crop season.

  • Ghanaian chocolate-producing company breaks into USA market – Report

Niche Cocoa Industry, a totally owned Ghanaian company, has expanded its scope and entered the US market in an effort to consolidate profits from Ghana’s cocoa beans.

A Joy Business report claims that the business opened a processing facility as part of efforts to develop semi-finished and completed cocoa goods from Ghana and to create jobs.

In a statement, the company’s managing director, Edmund Poku, stated that another goal of the plant is to create finished chocolate using cocoa butter and liquor derived from Ghanaian cocoa beans.

“The value within the supply chain comes from adding more value upstream and given the market dynamics for most of the big markets which are outside of the African continent.

“We are proud, of not only of the quality of the product it has delivered but also of the flavor and taste of the Ghanaian cocoa bean, which is the world’s most premium bean,” he stated.

He added that “The USA became a natural choice for expansion, given the market size and potential to develop both semi-finished products and also selling more products up the value chain such as chocolates.”

Mr Edmund Poku, touching further on the move, said it took into account proximity to customers, logistics, high-quality human capital, and a business-friendly environment.

He, however, said the company would soon import cocoa cake, which will be pulverised to create cocoa powder for nationwide distribution in Ghana.

He pointed out that the firm will begin extracting high-quality semi-finished products from cocoa beans meant for sale to key markets outside Ghana.

  • Only real action will help us win galamsey fight, not words – Concerned Small Scale Miners Association

The Concerned Small Scale Miners Association says the fight against illegal mining cannot be won with mere words.

The Association insists only a concerted effort can help the government to end the menace.

According to the President of the Concerned Small Scale Miners Association, Michael Peprah, Ghanaians will believe and support the fight if government officials involved in the illegality are held accountable.

“We believe that the fight can only be won if we decentralise the fight to the district level, and a lot of DCEs have come out to be accomplices in this galamsey problem.”

“It is not going to be easy, but I don’t believe in words. No matter what it is, we can still salvage the problem,” he said.

At the said engagement, President Akufo-Addo asked them to help him end the menace.

  • Aisha Huang symbolizes Ghana’s failure to tackle galamsey – Kweku Baako

Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako has indicated that the return of galamsey kingpin Aisha Huang has proven that Ghana has failed in dealing with the illegal small-scale mining menace.

Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo Morning Show on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, he stated that when Aisha Huang was arrested, it emerged that she was married to a Ghanaian, therefore she was entitled to some benefits.

Baako further noted that Huang was subsequently asked by the authorities to go and regularize her galamsey activities because she was operating without the requisite license.

“Aisha Huang symbolizes Ghana’s failure to tackle the phenomenon of galamsey effectively and courageously, then and now. This woman, I have already stated that prior to 2017, she was arrested and released three times. There are people who are challenging me on this but very soon they will get the evidence.

“I have in my hands a copy of the minutes of the Ashanti Regional and District Security Councils (REGSEC) meeting dated September 6, 2016. In the minutes, she was arrested and at the meeting, Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) Officer who attended the meeting said this about Aisha Huang – ’13 Chinese immigrants caught engaging in illegal mining were processed to be sent out of Ghana but need to cover their dugout pits first. Two out of the 13 were on the run and their guarantors were to be held responsible. We informed members that one Chinese lady called Miss Aisha, who was famously known in galamsey operations in Ghana, came to his office and after interrogation, it came out that she was married to a Ghanaian, hence entitled to some benefits. However, she does not have an operating license and was asked to go and have one,” Kweku Baako said.

It appears that Ghana is losing the fight against galamsey as the various water bodies in the country have been polluted with the colour of the water turning milky brown.

President Akufo-Addo at a meeting with chiefs in the Ashanti region on Wednesday, October 5, vowed to deal with persons within his government who may be found complicit in illegal mining activities.

The President said the government has for several years been struggling with the fight against ‘galamsey’, hence government officials cannot continue to compromise efforts against the menace.

“I am not here to threaten anybody, but I want you to know that this is a struggle that I take very seriously and I will not be in a position to protect anybody against whose evidence is messed up about their complicity in this matter…I am a lawyer and I always deal with facts and when the facts are brought against you, you will be invited to comment on them.
“If the response is not satisfactory, you can guess to yourself what the consequences will be,” the President said.

He also admitted that Ghana’s fight against illegal mining has so far not been successful.

“Since I took office on 7th January 2017, nearly 6 years ago, I have made it the central feature of my presidency to lead in the efforts to rid our country of this menace which we all now call ‘galamsey’.

“Indeed, it was an important aspect of my inaugural address of that day. It has not been easy, it has not been popular, but we have not got the immediate result that I was looking for,” President Akufo-Addo said.

  • Churn out responsible innovations to stay relevant – BoG urges Fintechs

If financial technology innovators (Fintechs) want to remain relevant in the near future and help the development of their country, the Bank of Ghana has advised them to incorporate sustainability issues into their ideas.

First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Maxwell Opoku-Afari, encouraged the innovators not to overlook the advantage they stand to gain when they incorporate sustainability into their products and services in a speech given on his behalf at the bank’s regulatory sandbox engagement forum in Accra. The forum brought together various Fintechs, partnering banks, and other financial institutions.

“Let me underscore the importance of responsible innovation in this endeavour. Globally, sustainability has taken centre-stage in all spheres of human activity. The need to assess possible negative impacts from our innovations on present and future societies has become more critical than ever.

“The plethora of phrases such as ‘green finance’, responsible investment, sustainable finance; environment, social and governance; and climate finance in current discourse indicate the seriousness modern society attaches to sustainable innovations.

“Adoption of responsible innovation presents in FinTech design ethos a unique national advantage, with the potential to attract investments into our FinTech ecosystem for the creation of employment and wealth,” he said.

The Bank of Ghana’s Regulatory Sandbox has been designed for innovators to test innovative financial products, services and business models in a controlled but live environment under supervision of the central bank.

To this end, Dr. Opoku-Afari emphasised that the Bank of Ghana will continue exercising strict oversight over the industry in order to protect integrity of the financial sector and investments of customers.

“To meet the changing needs of customers, as well as address challenges of the industry, calls for pragmatic and innovative solutions which confront the status quo. This we consider a shared responsibility of the regulator and the innovators to create a conducive environment for experimentation.

“This approach, though useful, has its own risks; and if not properly directed could be disastrous to society. A laissez-faire attitude to innovation and financial service delivery is therefore an unsuitable approach to accommodate.

“With regard to developments in virtual assets, the Bank continues to monitor developments on a regular basis; and the many cautionary notices issued indicate the presence of significant inherent risks.

“While we do stand by these cautions, we are open to dialogue geared toward the potential exploration of regulatory outcomes keenly focused on consumer interest and protection. The Sandbox could potentially present us with these opportunities,” he said.

Chief Executive Officer of the Telecom Chamber, Ken Ashigbey, commended the central bank for the Regulatory Sandbox project and urged regulators of other industries to also introduce similar programmes which will promote innovation in their respective sectors.

He urged the industry to come out with practical solutions and suggestions that support government to generate revenues from the digital space, and which will not bring about any disruption to their businesses.

  • Residents of Ashalaja sleep in kiosks as their homes remain flooded

Some affected residents, including families in Ashalaja, one of the communities in Weija-Gbawe municipality, which were flooded as a result of spillage of water from the Weija Dam say they now have to sleep in kiosks.

According to them, they have to contend with this situation until the water recedes.

“Now, I sleep in my wife’s container together with her and our children. From the way the level is, it is not possible we can sleep in there until after one week from today,” one of the victims, John, told JoyNews.

Hundreds of persons living in the Weija-Gbawe municipality were forced to spend the night outside their homes after water levels there rose to deadly heights.

Residents of Ashalaja sleep in kiosks as their homes remain flooded

Security agencies worked throughout the night in the dark to rescue persons trapped in their homes as the affected communities have been without power for close to 24 hours.

In Ashalaja, a good number of affected people have had to pass the night in kiosks outside of their homes.

Speaking to JoyNews on Tuesday night, John recounted how difficult it has been for him and his family.

“It was a very difficult period. We really suffered, because there was no help coming from anywhere. The way people were packing out of their homes, it looked as though we were in a war zone; people were carrying their belongings including mattresses and moving through the flood,” he said.

Residents of Ashalaja sleep in kiosks as their homes remain flooded

John said the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) after coming to rescue them from their houses, provided a pack of kenkey and fish to the survivors.

“NADMO came on Tuesday morning to give one kenkey and fish each to affected persons and promised to be back again, but we have waited for them till now (evening), but nobody is showing up,” he uttered.

Another victim, Serwaa, said she’s surprised about the current situation because it has never happened.

Residents of Ashalaja sleep in kiosks as their homes remain flooded

“Sometimes, the water comes but it doesn’t get to my house which is about two kilometers away from the river. Yesterday when NADMO came to rescue us, they had to park their car at a distant place before coming to rescue us.

“Right now, my books and my certificates are all swimming in the water in my room. My daughter’s uniform as well. So what we did was to lock the room so that none of my things come out of the room with the flood waters,” she said.

Paa Kwesi, a resident of Ashalaja, explained the scene on the first day of the flooding was a very pathetic one which will live with him for a long time to come.

“This is a residential area and we had women, adults and even babies. So seeing older women and babies parking out of their houses with no hope, it was hard to take. You know you cannot anticipate that this will happen, so people didn’t have a plan ‘B’. Seeing women and children struggling in the flood was really sad,” he said.

  • So NPP will only fight galamsey because of elections? – UG don asks

A lecturer at the University of Ghana‘s School of Business, Dr. Kobby Mensah, has lamented President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s statement linking the fight against illegal small-scale mining, galamsey, and winning the 2024 elections.

He is concerned that more pressing socio-economic, environmental and generational considerations have failed to make the list of why the fight against the scourge must be won.

In a tweet posted on October 5, 2022; hours after Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had met with the National House of Chiefs and selected Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), Dr. Mensah wondered why the fixation on elections.

“So NPP will only fight Galamsay becos [because] will make them win elections Ei! Where are the values – securing the future of generations unborn? Sustaining the earth’s resources? Protecting the livelihoods – human and animals etc. None of these important to president but elections,” his post read.

President Akufo-Addo in his address admonished MMDCEs, in particular, to put in their best effort to ensure that the government wins the fight against galamsey.

The president stressed that they had to put in their best effort because winning the war against ‘galamsey’ will ensure that the New Patriotic Party, NPP, wins power for an unprecedented third successive term under the Fourth Republic.

“Let us work together to get rid of this one. And I believe that if the people of Ghana see a determined effort on our part which is yielding results. Our water bodies are clearing, our landscape is being reclaimed, our forest zones are being preserved, it will help them enable us to do what? Break the Eight,” the president told the MMDCEs.

During the first part of the meeting, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo refuted suggestions that his government is not committed to the fight against galamsey.

According to Akufo-Addo, his government has been committed to the fight against the menace since his first day in office and its determination to curb it even cost the NPP some votes in the 2020 General Elections.

The president intimated that the votes he and his party lost showed that he really put his presidency on the line to fight galamsey.

“Since I took office on January 7th, 2017, nearly six years ago, I have made it a central feature of my presidency to lead in the fight to rid our country of this menace, which we all now call galamsey.

“Indeed, it was an important aspect of my inaugural address that day. It has not been easy; it has not been popular and we have not gotten the immediate results that I was looking for.

“Indeed, in the last election of 2020, my stance on the issue cost my party and I significant losses in the mining communities. It turned out that my statement that I was putting my presidency on the line in the fight against galamsey was neither bumbazed nor reckless. It was the simple truth,” he said.

  • Suck a breast this October even if you haven’t done some before – Health expert to men

As the world marks this year’s annual campaign to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer, health expert and CEO of Chartma Herbal Health Centre, Charity Twumasi Ankrah, has encouraged men to suck breasts.

In an interview with Accra-based Joy Prime, she underscored the importance of health advisory she was issuing, stressing that it helped to reduce breast cancer in women.

She mentioned that women who were not lactating faced the challenge of having their breasts sucked unlike those with babies who stood to enjoy the ‘treat’ as a result of breastfeeding.

“Breastfeeding your baby is very important as a woman. That’s why if a woman has not given birth, it is a worry because, at the end of the day, the breast must be sucked,” she said.

Touching on the six-month exclusive breastfeeding for babies, Madam Twumasi Ankrah noted that it ultimately inures to the benefit of the mother despite some mothers seeing it as burdensome.

“Sometimes women are like ‘why should I do six-month breastfeeding?’ You feel you’re just giving the child milk but in essence, you are helping yourself so feeding your child or breastfeeding your child is very important as a woman,” she emphasized.

Charity Twumasi Ankrah posited that men had a key role to play in the necessity of sucking breasts. She said in the month of breast cancer awareness, men ought to suck breasts even if they have not attempted it before.
“So if you are a man, please try as much as possible…even if you haven’t done it before, for this month of October where we have breast cancer awareness try to suck a breast,” she stated.

She cautioned that the sucking should only be done once in a while rather than on a daily basis.
She also advised men to refrain from squeezing the breasts because “it is not a balloon” warning that doing so can cause agony to women.

Madam Charity Twumasi Ankrah further urged women who are victims of breast cancer to heed to cutting off a cancerous breast stating that it should not make one feel shy. She said it should be viewed that the woman was saving her life.

“For the women out there, gather courage if you have to do it. Don’t feel shy, don’t feel bad. Just know that you’re saving yourself, if one breast has to go off,” she encouraged.

As October is breast cancer awareness month, people especially women are recommended to attend their local hospital or breast screening facility to have their breasts checked.

  • Cocoa Farmers Pension Scheme set to take off this month

The much-awaited rollout of the Cocoa Farmers Pension Scheme is set to commence this month, the Board Chairman of COCOBOD, Mr Peter Mac Manu has announced.

According to him, the trustees and implementers of the scheme would be rolling out from district to district to register cocoa farmers onto the scheme to enjoy the pension scheme’s benefit.

Mr Mac Menu was speaking at this year’s cocoa day grand durbar which also coincided with the COCOBOD 75th anniversary on the theme “COCOBOD @75: sustaining our environment, wealth and health”, held at Suhum in the Eastern region.

He said that, though the past and previous years had been challenging globally with the cocoa sector having suffered greatly, Ghana COCOBOD had not relented on its effort to push for policies that enhanced the welfare of cocoa farmers, assuring that his outfit would continue to be innovative and pragmatic in the midst of the challenges faced.

He said it had been three years since the implementation of the living income inferential, a pricing mechanism spearheaded by Ghana and Ivory Coast to secure a $400 premium on every tone of cocoa sold to be paid directly to the cocoa farmers.

Meanwhile, he said unfavorable market prizes as well as a deliberate attempt by buyers, among others, had undermined the initiative which sought to guarantee a decent income for farmers.

But he promised that his outfit would not relent on ensuring the implementation of the policy as well as reviving dead cocoa farms, adding that collaboration with all stakeholders was underway to ensure the eradication of poverty among cocoa farmers.
For his part, the Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong, commended cocoa farmers for their contribution to Ghana’s economy over the past years.

He said the contribution of the cocoa industry to the economy and growth of the country could not be underestimated, adding that cocoa production had by far and largely remained the backbone of Ghana’s economy, contributing significantly to the country’s export, while employing a large number of people as well as support the livelihood of in the value change production.

Mr Acheampong, however, he said though cocoa production had existed in Ghana for years making a positive economic impact, the industry was confronted with the imminent danger of the sale of cocoa farms for illegal mining activities.

The practice, he said if not checked could wipe away all the gains made in the country by the cocoa sector.

He, therefore, called on the chiefs, the cocoa farmers, and the cocoa farming communities to say no to the sale of farmlands for cash to the detriment of their future and livelihoods.

The minister said all efforts must be made to protect the farmlands by encouraging the youth to rather go into cocoa farming instead of indulging in illegal mining so that they could also reap the benefits.

He, therefore, encouraged COCOBOD to strengthen its engagement with key stakeholders for the improvement of the sector.
Also for his part, the chairman for the occasion, Okyehene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin urged COCOBOD to expand its cocoa scholarship scheme to benefit all cocoa farmers across the country.

  • 38 foreigners grabbed in Accra

About 38 persons alleged to be migrants from Niger were yesterday rounded up at Abofu in Achimota, Accra by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).

All women, with some carrying children, the migrants were rounded up during a decongestion exercise in Accra organised by the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) and led by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Henry Quartey.

They were picked up around 11 a.m. by the GIS to its headquarters for further investigations.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly (ONMA), NiiBoyeLaryea, told the media that he was informed about the arrival of the migrants by residents around 6a.m yesterday.

He said the alleged migrants were said to have been dropped by a bus around 11 p.m. on Monday with the whereabouts of the bus yet to be known.

Mr Laryea noted that intelligence found out that the migrants were making a transit from Niger to Cote d’ Ivoire and other places.

The MCE said he then informed the Regional Minister and the GISabout the incident while the Assembly’s task force assessed the situation.

The Regional Minister, for his part, stressed the need to treat the issue fairly as Ghana was part of the Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS) and had signed on to its protocols.

MrQuarteyemphasised that there would be collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Gender and Social Protection and the GIS to ensure that the migrants went through the due process and were offered the needed assistance.

The leader of the migrants, MrsMadinaYagoudaNeanti, said they meant no harm as they were heading towards Cote d’ Ivoire only to be dropped at the location by the driver of the bus who was conveying them.

She said that they only needed another vehicle to convey them to their destination but the language barrier had been a challenge as they could not communicate effectively with the driver of the bus that brought them to the Abofulocation.

Mixed reactions have been shared on social media over the Nollywood actress’s move. Many people believe it was improper for her to reveal her political affiliation.

Others claim she has every right to do what she pleases and that by doing so, she has opened the door for other famous celebrities to publicly declare their support for a political party.

    Below are some Twitter reactions:

Briz_kul: “After 2023 general election I will know the people to call elder and also to respect in Nigeria. Zack Orji and Joke Silva, already missing in the list.”

NGRSTUDENTS4OBI: “In all honesty, I don’t blame joke Silva for her endorsement of Tinubu, they are all after there. The people I will blame are the poor and sufferings fans of her if you let a well-fed and comfortable person decide for you who to be your leader. You have failed as an adult”

SusanHenshaw50: “Cannot believe Obidients are crying like babies all over Twitter about Joke Silva. Hypocrites with zero internal monologue not to mention conviction. They present Peter Obi as a Messiah and expect self respecting people to fall in line? Gotta be kidding me. Cry a damn river.”

OnlineGuru_: “Real life is different from Nollywood If Nigeria Election were to hold in Nollywood patience ozokwor would play the evil woman supporting BAT while Joke Silva will be the Angel supporting Obi But in Reality we now know who the Evil one is”

amuta_ann: “I’m really happy Joke Silva closed her comments and other Tinubu supporters are in the closet and afraid to publicly support him/APC. This means we’re getting somewhere. There is shame in supporting greed, wickedness and failure, and I’m happy they recognize this.”

UnlimitedEniola: “Joke Silva has pitched her tenth with Bola Ahmed Tinubu. At 61, she has nothing to lose. All she wants is retirement benefits and Nollywood can’t give her that. Mama is old and she may not be looking forward to achieving anything spectacular. It is what it is.”

Letter_to_Jack: “Vote na PER HEAD. Joke Silva has said many times how Sanwo-Olu (Tinubu’s boy) has come to her aid in her most difficult moments in life. The last was when they destroyed her stuff during EndSARS. Were you expecting her to turn on him/them when it’s time to repay? Be realistic.”

MLS_ODG: “Dear Joke Silva, history and posterity wouldn’t forget the position you took. You have children, they as well would have children. May the good Lord reward everyone according to their works, unto the third and fourth generations…”

TtifeB: “As you’re cursing Joke Silva over her choice to support Tinubu, remember your mothers who collected 2 liters of kerosene to vote in your various states coz if they’ve been voting right since 1999,majority of your people won’t be in Lagos traffic selling wipers, gala & bottle water”

DeeOneAyekooto: “I commend the Veteran Actress Joke Silva for ignoring the IPOB Actors whose business is to bully everyone into surrendering to their HeroBeer Maestro.”

Tendrack: “Just unfollowed you. 1. For supporting the unrepentant plagiarist Kiki. And 2. For saying Joke Silva has the moral right to vote for a support a very sick Tinubu. A decision that will impact negatively on my life and that of my family. You are a threat to me.”

  • Moeen knocks back England Test return ahead of Pakistan tour

Moeen Ali has ruled out returning to the England Test team for their tour of Pakistan in December, stating his time is over with the red-ball format of the game.

The off-spinner captained the nation’s white-ball team on their recent seven-game T20 tour of the country, in lieu of Jos Buttler, leading them to a 4-3 series win,

Having stepped away from the five-day game last year under Joe Root’s captaincy, a potential return under successor Ben Stokes and new coach Brendon McCullum had been mooted.

  • Finch helps Australia overcome West Indies in thriller

Aaron Finch starred after being selected to bat at number four as Australia secured victory against West Indies with one ball to spare to take a 1-0 lead in their two-match T20I series.

The tourists set their opponents a total of 145-9 on the Gold Coast and Australia looked a long way from reaching that when languishing on 58-5 in just the eighth over.

But Finch (58) and Matthew Wade (39 not out) put Australia back on top and they clinched a three-wicket victory after the latter was dropped twice in the final over.

Kyle Mayers earlier top-scored for West Indies with 39, while Odean Smith chipped in at the end with 27 from 17 balls, but a lack of runs in the middle overs ultimately cost them.

Josh Hazlewood (3-35) ensured Australia had a reachable target to aim for, but David Warner and Cameron Green went for 14 either side of Mitch Marsh (3).

That slow start continued until Finch and Wade combined for a 69-run stand. Finch was caught by Jason Holder, leaving Australia requiring 19 from the final 2.5 overs.

Losing Pat Cummins (4) piled the pressure on the hosts, but Wade was twice let off and, with two runs needed from the final two balls, managed to get his side over the line.

    Finch closing in on milestone

Home skipper Finch has struggled with the bat of late and took on an unfamiliar role in the middle order as Australia experimented ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup.

He did his confidence no harm as he was the only batter to pass 50 and is now just 27 runs away from becoming the first Australian to score 3,000 runs in men’s T20I history.

    Hazlewood halts West Indies

Hazlewood claimed three wickets to become the third Australia player to take 50 in the format after Adam Zampa and Mitchell Starc.

That set the hosts on their way to a third victory in four T20Is against the Windies, with this making it back-to-back wins for the first time since March 2012.

  • Reality of Ghana’s debt restructuring is on businesses, households – Economist

The rippling effect of Ghana’s debt restructuring will not only be felt by financial institutions but businesses and households.

This is the “reality” that Ghana finds itself, the Policy Initiative for Economic Development (PIED), an economic policy think tank, said as the country looks to restructure its debt with the help of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Ghana is in negotiation with IMF for a $3 billion loan support for its homegrown economic programme, with a Debt Sustainability Analysis (DSI) currently ongoing.

The loan facility is aimed at easing the country’s economic hardship by restoring and sustaining macroeconomic stability, ensuring a resilient and inclusive growth and promoting social protection.

The government is also setting up a five-Member Committee of prominent financial services professionals to lead extensive stakeholder engagements across all the key segments of the financial sector in the debt restructuring process.

Dr Daniel Abateye Anim-Prempeh, an Economic and Financial Analyst with PIED, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview on Tuesday that financial institutions would be denied the needed access to liquidity through the debt restructuring.

He noted that in effect, banks, pension funds and insurance companies who the Government borrowed from would find it difficult to mobilise enough money for onward lending, thereby denying businesses the opportunity to borrow for expansion.

“If businesses are not expanding, it means that they would not be able to increase output. When output is not increased, jobs will not be created, and they cannot make profit and that will also affect the Government’s ability to mobilise revenue through taxation,” Dr Anim-Prempeh explained.

Mindful of the reduction in the level of public and investor confidence in the economy and, by extension, the financial sector, he urged the Government to ensure that “the debt restructuring is well done and communicated.”

The Financial Analyst said many Ghanaians would resort to the traditional ways of keeping money in their homes should the debt restructuring reduce public confidence, particularly in the financial sector.

“People have invested in treasury bills or bonds with the expectation that when it matures, they can get the money with returns, but now it must now be extended. This means that people’s plan and strategy for the use of that money have been frustrated.”

He also said: “With this, people who have money will resort to other instruments or alternatively. People who have so much money may resort to other markets other than our domestic market.”

Dr Anim-Prempeh, therefore, recommended to the Government to “devise a very good communication mechanism and a holistic stakeholder engagement to ensure that the debt restructuring is done and still maintain investor confidence in the domestic economy.”

He asked the government to fast-track the negotiations with the IMF and be transparent to everyone, noting that, “once the IMF and the facility comes on board, we’ll earn that credibility from external investors.”

He told the Government to engage captains of industry, including investors and the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) to incorporate the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) programme to increase value addition and export to anchor economic growth.

The Financial Analyst cautioned the Government against “diverting the money into consumption like paying of wages and salaries, and also conduct periodic audit into the use of the funds to ensure accountability.”

Data provided by the Bank of Ghana shows that the country’s total public debt stock has reached GHS393.4 billion in June 2022, 78.3 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The central bank’s Summary of Economic and Financial Data noted that the domestic debt was GHS190.1 billion, and external debt, GHS203.4 billion, and ascribed the increase in debt to exchange rate instability.

The IMF in its April 2022 Fiscal Monitor predicted that Ghana’s debt to GDP ratio would be 84.6 per cent by the end of 2022 – a debt situation that many economic and financial analysts, and financial institutions have described as “unsustainable.”

  • Shami set to replace Bumrah for T20 World Cup as India face final South Africa test

Mohammed Shami looks set to be the beneficiary of Jasprit Bumrah’s withdrawal from India’s T20 World Cup squad ahead of their final ODI series against South Africa.

India welcome the Proteas for what will be the teams’ final white-ball multi-game stand prior to the tournament in Australia later this month.

Bumrah, the International Cricket Council’s number-one ranked bowler in the 50-over format as recently as July, has been ruled out with a reported back stress fracture.

That has seemingly opened the door for Shami, who faces a race to prove match fitness following a bout with Covid-19, though coach Rahul Dravid has hinted the team may wait as late as they can for him.

“In terms of who the replacement is, we’ll have a look,” he stated. “We’ll see, we’ve got time till October 15.

“Shami obviously is someone who’s in the standbys, but unfortunately for us, he couldn’t play this series, which would have been ideal from that perspective.

“He’s in the NCA at the moment. We’ll have to get reports as to how he’s recovering, and what’s his status after 14-15 days of Covid.

“We’ll take a call, once I get reports on how he’s feeling, then we can take a call and the selectors can take a call on how we move forward on it.”

South Africa’s Rilee Rossouw, meanwhile, hopes that the springboard of a consolation win in the pair’s T20 series can help push the Proteas on towards success over the coming weeks.

“Obviously [it is] not the series result we wanted but going into the World Cup, the last game, the momentum is something we did we need,” he added.

In-form hosts seek to reverse prior defeat

With seven consecutive wins in the 50-over format to their name, India head into this match in their best form since 2017.

Then, they put together a nine-game winning run across ODIs, and this three-game series presents both the chance to smash that history and make amends.

South Africa have been difficult opponents in recent times for India, with the Proteas having won their last three encounters, and four of their last five bilateral series.

In addition, they will be looking to avoid consecutive away losses in ODIs for the first time since 2019, having suffered a 118-run defeat to England in their last such outing.

  • Online vehicle auctioning at Tema port to begin by end of October 2022 – GRA

Rev. Amisshaddai Amoah, the Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority, has disclosed plans for an online auction site to sell vehicles at the Tema port.

He asserts that customers will have the choice to buy cars online by the end of October 2022.

The Commissioner-General mentioned that this will, among other things, aid in the eradication of corruption with regard to the auctioning of commodities at the ports.
At the occasion to introduce the GRA Service Charter, he was speaking.

“We’re working to improve our services through various online and technology platforms such as that customers will feel comfortable dealing with us.

“We have the E-VAT, E-invoicing, and other innovative means by which customers are able to pay taxes and avoid some alleged corruption in our various offices. Another initiative is that by the end of October, we want to begin an E-Auction at the ports so that if you want to buy a car, just be home and click to search for the kind of car you want without coming to the port,” he is quoted by myjoyonline.com

The Authority also noted that this is to enhance revenue mobilization and reduce revenue losses at the ports.

  • Africa’s mineral wealth remains key driver of its transformation – Ambassador Muchanga

Ambassador Albert Muchanga, Commissioner of African Union for Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry and Minerals has stated that Africa’s vast mineral wealth remains an important driver for the continent’s structural transformation.

This, he added was enshrined in Agenda 2063, as it represented 30 per cent of the mineral deposits in the world.

He said Africa’s exports of oil, gas and minerals account for 70 per cent of their exports and 50 per cent of their revenue.

Ambassador Muchanga stated this during the Launch of the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) Phase II and the Second Forum on Mining, taking place at the African Union Headquarters, in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia.

He said the mineral wealth positioned Africa to play a central role in the energy transition agenda in the dangerous era of climate change.

“However, despite the enormous potential of the continent’s mineral industry, most African countries have historically been unable to fully benefit from their natural wealth as we have remained producers and exporters of mineral raw materials, a low rank in the global value chain.”

“And there are major threats that may hinder Member States’ abilities to fully reap the benefits of the mineral wealth endowment”.

He said for a start, Africa had a disproportionate dependence on extractives exports, which waas major vulnerability as it exposed the continent to the boom and bust cycles associated with commodity prices as well as illicit financial flows. The illicit financial flows from Africa now hover around US$90 billion annually.

Africa hosts 6 per cent of global reserves of copper, 53 per cent of cobalt, 25 per cent of bauxite, 21 per cent of graphite, 46 per cent of manganese, 35 per cent of chromite, 79 per cent of phosphate rock, 91per cent of platinum group metals.

“We can add to the foregoing: hydrogen, water, wind and solar power.

“When one looks at production, Africa accounts for a greater share of current production of many of these minerals, including 70 per cent of cobalt. Lithium is mined in Zimbabwe and Mali, while Namibia, Ghana and the DRC also have them. Rare Earth Elements (REEs) are mined in Angola and Burundi as well.

Mr Muchanga said Africa was part of the global value-chains for green minerals; however, that role was concentrated at the first phase of the value chain, exploration and extraction.

“The task ahead is to move towards value addition and the Africa Commodity Strategy will assist in this regard.

“In line with our commitment towards the green transition, the Department of Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry and Minerals (ETTIM) will organize a side event on the margins of COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt next month under the theme: “Decarbonizing African Industry”.

“I also invite you all to the AU Summit on Industrialization and Economic Diversification to be held in Niamey, Niger from 20-25 November 2022”.

On mining, he said there was urgency to ensure that the roadmap envisioned in the Africa Mining Vision with a central theme of “Transparent, equitable and optimal exploitation of mineral resources to underpin broad-based sustainable growth and socio-economic development” was implemented effectively and fully.

“This is because AMV is a continental vision for managing the continent’s mineral resources for the benefit of Africans.”

“In this vision, minerals are considered a key driver of industrialization and transformation of our economic structures. These are critical to the continent’s long-term inclusive growth and sustainable development.”

He said the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) was established as the specialized agency of the African Union to implement the African Mining Vision (AMV) as well as the minerals segment of the Africa Commodity Strategy.

The first phase of the AMDC was launched in 2013 as a five-year flagship project housed in the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). As a project, it provided strategic support and coordination for the implementation of the AMV and its Action Plan adopted in 2009.

In 2018, the Assembly of the African Union Heads of State and Government decided that the Republic of Guinea would host the African Minerals Development Centre as a specialized agency of the African Union.

In February 2019, the AMDC was officially handed over to the African Union by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa to start the process of transferring it to Conakry, Guinea as a specialized agency of the Union.

The Host Agreement between the African Union and the Government of the Republic of Guinea was signed in 2021.

Since May 2022, the AMDC is being supported through the ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme (Phase II), initiated by the Secretariat of the Organization for African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) and we are most grateful for this support.

Financing came from the European Commission with UNDP as the implementing agency.

As highlighted in the AMDC Business Plan, the AMV’s value proposition of exploiting minerals for sustainable development throughout the value chain calls for a major shift in the conceptual methods and institutional arrangements adopted to-date regarding the minerals sector.

In the envisaged changes, greater importance is given to improving internal governance, building capacities, capturing the more lucrative links in the value chain such as manufacturing and the related support services such as research and development which is critical to boosting innovation in the mineral value chain.

He called on all of you to accelerate the signing and ratifications of the AMV Statutes to enable the AMDC to become a full-fledged Specialized Agency of the AU.

He also called for regional and continental value chains, to develop reliable and resilient supply chains within the African Continental Free Trade Area, using the lever of intra-African trade in finished and intermediate goods.

“Second, Africa will have to reposition herself as a reliable supply base to the rest of the world, not in the historical mode of supplier of basic raw materials but supplier of either finished or intermediate goods that place Africa higher in the global value chains.

“Minerals, and in particular, the AMDC, will play critical roles in both cases.

“As we do so, let us also recall that some regions of the world have come up with the concept of Critical Raw Materials. These are raw materials they will always require to make their industries run. Let us engage these countries to agree on how we can mutually benefit from international trade in minerals”.

He said the overall goal of the African Forum on Mining was to defined as a strategic way forward for minerals development that would contribute to the energy transition, and hoped that the Forum will come up with actions required to transition the mineral industries across Africa towards net zero emissions of carbon dioxide and digitalization.

“Achieving that will strategically position the African continent in the global energy transition. In this connection, I applaud the initiative of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia to jointly develop electric car batteries. We encourage other African countries to also promote the development of regional and continental value chains to position the African Continental Free Trade Area increase intra-African trade flows.

“It is also my expectation that the Forum will galvanize efforts towards enhanced domestication of the Africa Mining Vision with its core thematic areas. In this connection, I invite you all to come up with practical measures on how the continent can optimize benefits from the minerals sector through realignment of policies, legal and regulatory frameworks, taking into consideration new imperatives such as de-carbonization”.

  • Finch says Australia will keep ‘tinkering’ ahead of T20 World Cup defence

Australia captain Aaron Finch declared his side will continue “tinkering” until the start of the T20 World Cup after starring in a three-wicket win over West Indies on Wednesday.

The Windies set a total of 145-9 before reducing Australia to 58-5 within eight overs on the Gold Coast, but Finch (58) and Matthew Wade (39 not out) led the hosts’ successful recovery.

Taking an unfamiliar role at number four in the batting order, Finch moved to within 27 runs of becoming the first Australia batsman to score 3,000 runs in T20I history.

The world champions have experimented with their line-up in recent outings, including when Cameron Green opened during last month’s tour of India, and Finch expects that to continue.

“Both teams were sloppy if they are honest with themselves,” he said. “But it’s good to get across the line.

“We knew that total would be a challenge on that wicket, we did really well early and they took wickets in the middle.

“It would have been nice to get us over the line, I was trying to target the boundary but mishit one. I didn’t like getting the first one in the head, but I really enjoy batting in the middle order.

“It was just something different, we might change it up in the next match. We are going to keep tinkering with things until we get to the World Cup.”

Australia will begin their defence of the World Cup against New Zealand on October 22 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

  • Red Bull face budget cap breach findings wait after FIA delays reveal

The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has delayed its decision over potential Formula One budget cap breaches by Red Bull and Aston Martin until October 10.

F1’s governing body, which had been expected to release its Certificates of Compliance for the 2021 season on Wednesday, has made a five-day postponement to its decision amid ongoing furore.

Red Bull, whose driver Max Verstappen won the Drivers’ World Championship in a controversial finale last year, are one of two teams alleged by rivals to have breached the competition’s fiscal limits.

Principal Christian Horner has reiterated confidence in his team and threatened his counterpart at Mercedes, Toto Wolff, with legal action over his claims.

But the wait to discover just whether Red Bull committed a breach will now last until next week.

“The FIA informs that the conclusion of the analysis of the 2021 financial submissions of the Formula One teams and the subsequent release of Certificates of Compliance to the Financial Regulations will not take place on Wednesday, 5 October,” the organisation stated.

“The analysis of financial submissions is a long and complex process that is ongoing and will be concluded to enable the release of the Certificates on Monday, 10 October.

“The Financial Regulations were agreed unanimously by all Competitors, who have worked positively and collaboratively with the FIA Cost Cap Administration throughout this first year under the Financial Regulations.

“As previously communicated, there has been significant and unsubstantiated speculation and conjecture in relation to this matter, and the FIA reiterates that until it is finalised, no further information will be provided.

“The FIA also reiterates that any suggestion that FIA personnel have disclosed sensitive information is equally baseless.”

Punishment is likely to follow if Red Bull are deemed to have committed a breach, though the extent of whether it would strip Verstappen of his maiden world title is unknown.

  • The richest shareholder on GSE loses nearly $10 million from stake in GCB Bank

Ghanaian businessman Daniel Ofori has seen the market value of his stake in Ghana’s largest bank, Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB Bank Limited), fall by nearly $10 million since the start of 2022 due to a sustained decline in the bank’s shares and the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the U.S. dollar.

GCB Bank is one of Ghana’s largest banks in terms of total operating assets and industry deposits. According to Tesah Capital, a Ghanaian asset management firm, the bank is the country’s second-largest bank, accounting for more than 11 percent of banking industry deposits.

Ofori, the richest shareholder on the Ghana Stock Exchange, owns 7.49 percent of GCB Bank, making him the third-largest shareholder in the banking group after the Social Security and National Insurance Trust and the Ghanaian government.

According to data tracked by Billionaires.Africa, the market value of Ofori’s stake in the leading banking group has fallen by GH¢24.8 million ($9.32 million) since the year began.

The decline is attributed to the weakening of the Ghanaian cedi against the U.S. dollar, and a market-wide sell-off of shares on the Ghana Stock Exchange as investors moved to preserve wealth.

Shares in GCB Bank on the local bourse have dropped by more than 23 percent since the beginning of the year, falling from GH¢5.25 ($0.854) on January 1 to GH¢4 ($0.384) on October 3, 2022.

As a result of price crash, the market value of Ofori’s stake has dropped by GH¢24.8 million ($9.32 million), from GH¢104.2 million ($16.95 million) at the start of the year to GH¢79.39 million ($7.63 million) at the time of writing.

Despite the $9.3-million drop in his wealth, Ofori remains the wealthiest investor on the Ghana Stock Exchange thanks to his well-diversified investment portfolio, which includes stakes in GCB Bank, Societe Generale Ghana, Fan Milk Plc, and CAL Bank.

  • Oppong Nkrumah welcomes ‘no EU ban on Ghanaian cocoa’ report

Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has welcomed news from the European Union (EU) that there is no ban on cocoa from Ghana.

He described the report as “good news.”

“The process of improving the quality of Ghanaian cocoa should be a mutually agreed path that aligns our common interests. Good news,” the Ofoase Ayirebi lawmaker tweeted after the EU Ambassador to Ghana, Irchad Razaarly said Europe is not banning Ghana’s cocoa.

Mr Irchad Razaarly said the EU rather wants more of Ghana’s cocoa.

Speaking at the second Edition of Orange Cocoa Day 2022 in Accra, the European Union Ambassador to Ghana, Irchad Razaarly said, “The call for more sustainable cocoa production is growing globally. And our citizens in Europe are increasingly demanding measures for ensuring that cocoa and other commodities are produced in a socially environmental sustainable way. This explains EU’s legislation on afforestation and forest degradation and must not be seen as a threat to Ghana’s cocoa.”

“There is no ban on Ghana’s cocoa. On the contrary, we want more of Ghana’s cocoa, and we are in support of Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire amongst all of the producers who meet these requirements,” she said.

Earlier, Mr Oppong Nkrumah revealed that the Ghana Embassy in Belgium under the leadership of Ambassador Sena Boateng, has brought to the attention of the Government of Ghana that in Europe, there is a new legislation that could soon make Ghanaian cocoa and coffee unexportable to many international markets.

Isaac Tettey, 36, is reported to have pleaded not guilty to three charges of incest, defilement and unnatural canal knowledge of his daughter.

As part of his bail condition, he is to produce three sureties two of whom are to be justified with landed property.

The court presided over by Christiana Cann has directed the prosecution led by DSP Agnes Boafo to file disclosures within 14 days.

Presenting the case, the prosecution said the complainant is a 13-year-old victim (name withheld) who has stayed with her father [the suspect], for the past five years at Kaneshie near Dansoman station.

According to the prosecutor, throughout those years the suspect who is a trader slept on the same bed with the victim. However, in 2021, the victim felt an unusual feeling.

When the victim woke up, DSP Boafo told the court she saw the suspect having sexual intercourse with her through her anus.

  • Players’ wellbeing is forgotten – Van Dijk

Trent Alexander-Arnold has won seven trophies with Liverpool including the Premier League and Champions League

Virgil van Dijk says the well-being of players in the UK is “forgotten” amid criticism of Liverpool team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold.

There has been an intense focus on the defender’s recent performances after an indifferent start to the season.

“Everyone here is very good to praise a player very high up to the sky and let them fall as hard as they can,” said Netherlands defender Van Dijk.

“That’s what we, as players, have to deal with.”

Van Dijk, 31, added: “We forget about the wellbeing of players, we forget about that stuff and everyone is talking about how we should all accept it.

“For him to just carry on working – not only him but other players as well – and deal with it and show a reaction is what we need, all of us.

“To do that I think it’s important that we back him and the manager and the club and the fans.”

Liverpool have struggled for form generally this season – winning just two of seven Premier League games – but Alexander-Arnold’s displays have been of particular focus.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville said Alexander-Arnold, 23, has the potential to be one of the world’s best right-backs if he worked on his defending.

After last month’s Nations League games, England manager Gareth Southgate said the Liverpool defender’s “all-round game” was behind that of Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier, potentially putting his World Cup place in doubt.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp responded by labelling Alexander-Arnold “exceptional” and saying he would pick him in any team he managed.

Speaking after Tuesday’s Champions League win against Rangers, where he scored a free-kick, Alexander-Arnold said he was just focusing on performing on the pitch.

“No matter what I always try and think positively,” he told BT Sport.external-link “People will say things but for me it is about going out there and helping the team win games.

“It’s been a slow start to the season for me but I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”

Van Dijk believes the debate surrounding Alexander-Arnold is typical of what modern day players have to put up with, unlike those from previous eras.

“If the players from 10, 20 years ago were under the microscope we are at the moment there would also be a lot of players struggling,” he said.

“It will always come to you and it’s not easy to just completely shut it out and keep your head down – or you need to live under a rock and just turn up for training and then go back home and go to the game and go back home.

“We have to deal with it but it is not easy, let’s put it that way.”

  • Former Ghana FA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi reacts to Andre Ayew’s senior players comments ahead of World Cup

Famous former Ghana FA capo Kwesi Nyantakyi has backed Andre Ayew‘s comment that senior players may have selection advantage ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

“The newcomers are talented, but we already have a strong team that qualified for the World Cup, so every position is competitive,” Ayew told Aljazeera.

“Apart from senior players who may have an advantage, I believe no one is guaranteed a place in the squad just yet. Everyone must prove their quality on the field and everyone has a chance, giving the coach more options and solutions, formations, and I believe it is beneficial to have new players with the right mentality.”

His comment has created a heated argument within the footballing fraternity and on Social media.

But the former Ghana FA has backed the Black Stars captains comments.

“It’s all depends on the coach. The management will only demand for a criteria for selection. It may be borne out of experience, goal scoring potentials whom if given the chance can deliver goals for the country. Performance of defenders and goalkeepers also come under the microscope,” he told KINGS TVGH SPORTS.

“Every position has two or three players vying for the spot. But the final decision rest with the coach.

“Andre Ayew only expressed an opinion. It doesn’t necessarily means that’s how the coach is going to do his work because he is not the gaffer.

” He even prefixed it with ‘MAY’- Senior players may be able to make the coach’s selection. But that doesn’t make it automatic.

“Many times, coaches have dropped senior players and picked younger players and at certain times, we have dropped younger players for senior players so it boils down to the strategy of the coach.

“It not based on age or experience alone, the performance of an individual in totality determines a lot of things. It is a technical issue. What everyone says is an opinion and he also has an opinion.

“Andre Ayew has the right to express himself and an opinion. Any other player too can express same or otherwise but its not binding on the coach.

The Vice President on Sunday began a three-day tour of the Northern Region to inspect ongoing government projects, interact with chiefs and people and commission completed projects.

Speaking to Citi News, the spokesperson for the Vice President, Dr. Gideon Boako said the Vice President was just engaging with people in his community.
