  • Kwasi Kwarteng U-turns on plans to scrap 45p tax rate

The government has U-turned on plans to scrap the 45p rate of income tax for higher earners.

Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng told the BBC the proposals, announced just 10 days ago, had become “a massive distraction on what was a strong package”.

“We just talked to people, we listened to people, I get it,” he added.

The decision, which marks a humiliating climbdown for Prime Minister Liz Truss, comes after several Tory MPs criticised the plan.

The plan to scrap the 45p rate, paid by people earning more than £150,000 a year, was announced as part of a package of tax cuts.

Mr Kwarteng told BBC Breakfast the proposal was “drowning out a strong package”, including support for energy bills, and cuts to the basic rate of income tax and corporation tax.

Asked whether he owed people an apology, he said: “We’ve listened to people. And yeah, there is humility and contrition in that. And I’m happy to own it.”

On how the decision was made, he said: “The prime minister decided not to proceed with the abolition of the rate.”

However, pressed on whether it was her U-turn, Mr Kwarteng added: “No, we talked together, I said this is what I was minded to do and we decided together, we were in agreement that we wouldn’t proceed with the abolition of the rate.”

Asked if he had considered resigning, he said: “Not at all.”

On Sunday, the prime minister had told the BBC the move to cut the top rate of income tax was “a decision that the chancellor made”.

But she also said she was absolutely committed to it as part of a package to make the tax system “simpler” and boost growth.

Asked whether his previous comment that there was “more to come” on tax cuts still stood, Mr Kwarteng said there would be no tax cuts ahead of the next Budget in the spring.

Pressed on whether his economic plans would mean spending cuts for public services, the chancellor said there would be more details in the government’s fiscal plan on 23 November.

However, he said the government was sticking to its 2021 comprehensive spending review, meaning it will not raise spending in line with inflation.

Media caption, Watch: Prime Minister Liz Truss says she stands by plans announced in the mini-budget

BBC political editor Chris Mason said the U-turn had left the chancellor and prime minister “humiliated, wounded and weakened”.

“But Liz Truss will hope it creates space to move forward, hauling herself out of the political quagmire of a budgetary statement that imploded on contact with political reality,” he said.

Labour called for the government to “reverse their whole economic, discredited trickle down strategy”.

Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves said the U-turn came “too late for the families who will pay higher mortgages and higher prices for years to come”.

Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey called on the chancellor to resign, saying he no longer had “any credibility” and the whole mini-budget needed an overhaul.

Media caption, Michael Gove: Cutting tax for the wealthiest “a display of the wrong values”

Plans to scrap the top rate of tax had seen remarkable opposition from the markets, other parties and a growing number of Tory MPs.

Conservative Party chairman Jake Berry had previously warned Tory MPs who voted against the prime minister’s tax measures that they would be kicked out of the parliamentary party – known as losing the whip.

But increasingly, it seemed Ms Truss did not have the numbers to get it through Parliament.

On Sunday, senior Tory Michael Gove hinted he would not vote for the plan when it came to Parliament, saying “I don’t believe it’s right”.

The former cabinet minister said the PM’s decision was “a display of the wrong values”.

He welcomed the U-turn, telling the BBC: “It’s better to act, it’s better to reverse ferret on something that’s causing a problem like this, and it sends a very important signal to the public and also to the markets that we are serious about sound money.”

The decision was also welcomed by the Confederation of British Industry.

Director-general Tony Danker said the pledge had become a “distraction” from other economic reforms, which he said would “make a real difference to growth”.

The U-turn, suggestions of which were first reported by the Sun, comes on the second day of the Conservative conference in Birmingham, with Mr Kwarteng due to speak later on Monday.

The pound jumped on the news, rising by more than a cent against the dollar to $1.1263, before falling back.

The currency touched a record low last week after Mr Kwarteng’s mini-budget – which contained around £45bn of unfunded tax cuts – created turmoil on the markets.

A 45% tax rate applies to income above £150,000 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Other measures announced in the government’s mini-budget included a cut to the basic rate of income tax to 19%, a reversal of the recent rise in National Insurance and scrapping the cap on bankers’ bonuses.

  • Peg dollar for duty payments at least quarterly – GUTA to government

The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), is calling on government to as a matter of urgency, peg the dollar for the purpose of duty payments, at least quarterly to mitigate the plight of the business community.

According to the association, the Bank of Ghana’s weekly exchange rate quoted by the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has seen a sharp rise from ¢8.2 to ¢9.5, thereby shooting up duty charges at the ports to about 30%.

GUTA also claims that, following the injection of the $750 million into the system, the dollar is heading to ¢11, a situation it laments is unbearable and needs swift intervention from the government to save businesses from collapse.

A Statement from the Association said “within a few days of injecting about $ 750m into the system, the dollar is heading to 11. This has brought a great deal of confusion, frustration and exasperation in the business sector, especially, in the importing community, as well as the consuming public”.

“To make matters worse, the Bank of Ghana (BOG) weekly exchange rate for Ghana Revenue Authority-Customs Division has also risen from 8.2 to 9.5, which happened overnight. The change has shot up duty charges to about 30%”, it stressed.

“This situation is unbearable and needs swift action from the government to save businesses. As a result, Guta is calling on the Government to, as a matter of urgency, peg the dollar for the purpose of duty payments, at least quarterly, to mitigate the plight of the business community”. It added.

PRESS STATEMENT ON THE ALARMING RATE OF THE DOLLAR TO THE CEDI

WHAT CAN WE DO AT THIS POINT?

TRADERS ASK, AS THE CEDI IS ABOUT ELEVEN (11) GHANA CEDIS TO THE DOLLAR

Within a few days of injecting about US $ 750m into the system, the dollar is heading to eleven Ghana cedis (Gh11). This has brought a great deal of confusion, frustration and exasperation in the business sector, especially, in the importing community, as well as the consuming public.

To make matters worse, the Bank of Ghana (BOG) weekly exchange rate for Ghana Revenue Authority-Customs Division has also risen from 8.2 Ghana Cedis to 9.5 Ghana Cedis, which happened overnight. The change has shot up duty charges to about 30%.

This situation is unbearable and needs swift action from the Government to save businesses. As a result, Guta is calling on the Government to, as a matter of urgency, peg the dollar for the purpose of duty payments, at least quarterly, to mitigate the plight of the business community.

At this stage, it is becoming extremely difficult to service our bills, as well as pay our duty.

The question here is, what can we do at this point in time to continue to be in business?

In view of this hard situation,we find ourselves in, we would like to humbly appeal to the  relative institutions particularly Bank of Ghana and Ministry of finance,  that came before the Joint Committee set up by the Office of the Council of State to expedite the necessary action for prompt response.

We are also by this release reminding  government that depleting funds without being replenished is the number one cause for business failure.

  • FLASHBACK: Government maintains cocoa price at GH¢660 per bag

For the planting season of 2021–2022, the government kept the cost of a bag of cocoa at GH10,560 per metric tonne.

According to Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Minister of Food and Agriculture, the government continues to support cocoa growers’ interests by maintaining the producer price.

“As a result of this wonderful gesture, cocoa producers in Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire are now better off than their counterparts in other cocoa-producing countries,” he remarked.

The government has maintained the producer price for the purchase of cocoa beans at GH¢10,560 per metric tonne for the 2021/2022 crop season, representing 87.1 of the Free on Board (FOB) value.

By this, a 64-kilogramme bag of cocoa beans will still sell at GH¢660. This is expected to take effect from Friday 8th October 2021.

The stay of the price makes Ghana the country in the sub-region with the highest price.

Speaking at a press briefing, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, stated that the move demonstrates government’s commitment to sustaining the interests of cocoa farmers and also improving their wellbeing.

According to him, the producer price was maintained when all cocoa-producing countries are contemplating a reduction in their farm gate prices, following a slump in the terminal cocoa market as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Akoto explained that the price includes the US$400 Living Income Differential (LID) expected to go directly to all cocoa farmers.

“Today, cocoa farmers in Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire are better off than their counterparts in other cocoa-producing countries as a result of this noble initiative.”

    Commencement of pension scheme

Dr. Akoto announced that all is set for the implementation of the cocoa farmers’ pension scheme for the 2021/2022 crop season.

Describing the scheme as unprecedented, the minister was hopeful the move will ensure the sustainable livelihood of the cocoa farmer after retirement from active work.

“This initiative will not only prepare the future for farmers but will also send an indication to the youth that cocoa farming is a decent job that can protect their future,” he said.

    Electronic weighing starts

As part of measures to protect the cocoa farmer from exploitation, Dr. Akoto stated that the usage of uniform non-negotiable electronic weighing scales will be deployed by October 8 to weigh cocoa beans.

The new scales, according to him, have been certified by the Ghana Standards Authority and been ascertained to conform with mandatory requirements.

He added that cocoa buyers cannot adjust the weighing scales after they have been calibrated and sealed by the Ghana Standards Authority.

“I want to caution Licencing Buying Companies that nobody can and should attempt to tamper with new scales since they cannot be altered,” he said.

    Support for the new season

Dr. Akoto assured that government will continue to support cocoa farmers through the pests and diseases control programme.

He added that COCOBOD has already put measures in place to continue with the distribution of hybrid seeds, pruning, hand pollination, and the cocoa rehabilitation programme.

“Government has also committed itself to continue supplying certified planting materials that are drought-tolerant, early-bearing and high-yielding”.

He explained that the implementation of these productivity enhancement programmes resulted in achieving record production of 1,046,958 metric tonnes of cocoa beans for the 2020/2021 crop season.

While appearing on CBS This Morning on Wednesday, Clooney backed Pitt’s opinion, saying, “He’s right about that. Let’s face it. He’s right.”

“I would say that I too think that I am the most handsome man in the world,” he continued. “I think the truth is… the first time he answered it, he said himself. And they said, ‘Maybe don’t say that. Do another take.’”

The next day, while chatting with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show, Clooney doubled down on Pitt’s take.

“I, too, think that I am the most handsome man,” the actor, who referred to his peer as “pretty boy Pitt,” quipped.

  • SSNIT, other companies shut down Bawku office over security concerns

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has moved its operations from the Upper East Region Town of Bawku.

The decision, JoyNews understands is due to the insecurity situation in the Municipality.

According to Joy News sources, other companies have also moved out of the city to forestall their staff being attacked.

SSNIT has evacuated its staff and removed furnishings and other items from its office including chairs and air-conditioners on Saturday, October 1, 2022.

Bawku has been the hotbed of decades-old ethnic conflict between the Mamprusis and Kusasis and has claimed several lives over the period.

The Regional Security Council, (REGSEC) last month reviewed the security situation there and introduced additional measures, including the extension of curfew hours to cover Nayoka, Kpalgu and Manga communities and a ban on tricycle operations, a common means of transport for the people.

A statement signed on behalf of the Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, by the Chief Director of the Regional Coordinating Council, Abubakari Inusah, said only personnel of the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Immigration Service and the military were allowed to use official motorbikes between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The latest situation means pensioners will now have to travel to the regional capital, Bolgatanga, a two-hour journey by road, to be able to access their meagre pensions.

In the afternoon of August 16, 2022, gunmen opened fire on a commercial vehicle on a highway near the Bawku Senior High School, killing three persons and injuring two others, including the driver.

Last week, the Conference of Heads of Basic Schools (COHBS) in Bawku demanded the closure of schools there, citing the recent insecurity.

COHBS, in a letter dated September 22, 2022, signed by its Municipal Chairman, Abugri Busia, and addressed to the Municipal Director of Education, said members of the association were saddened by the security challenges in the area.

“Following the insecurity and the subsequent ban on tricycles, we wish to appeal to you to close down basic schools in the municipality, pending improvement in the security situation,” it said.

The release added that the lives of school pupils and teachers could not be guaranteed in the wake of the renewed conflict in the area.

“We wish to appeal to both factions to put their guns down for peace to prevail for the sake of school pupils and their future,” it added.

In March, the Municipal Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) granted the release of about 100 basic school teachers in the Bawku Municipality due to the volatile security situation in the area.

Municipal Director of GES, Azeriya Ayeriga speaking in an interview with the Daily Graphic newspaper in March disclosed that some 2,247 pupils were also not in school for fear of their lives.

On September 25, Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery led a high-powered delegation from Accra to visit the area and interact with the youth.

With him were Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo-Dampare and the Chief of Defence Staff.

The delegation pleaded with the youth to use peaceful means to resolve their disagreements.

The security situation in the Upper East Region town was a subject of discussion in Parliament in March 2022, when the Interior Minister appeared to answer questions on what government was doing to address the problem.

Did you come across an errant leg at Pusha-T’s most recent concert? If so, the rapper wants to hear from you.

A day after Pusha performed at The Pageant in St. Louis, a fan took to Twitter claiming he lost his prosthesis during the event, but generally had a good time.

“I lost my prosthetic leg at your STL show,” user @endeylive wrote. “Still had fun tho.”

The 45-year-old rapper caught wind of the post, and called on fans for help.

“We gotta find that, man…,” Pusha responded. “If you were at the STL show and know where my guy’s prosthetic leg is…pls hand it over.”

The fan seemingly made light of the situation, telling other users he had to “hop” home and was still unable to walk.

It’s unclear if the fan has located the missing leg.

  • Import duties will continue to drive inflation if not checked – Importers and Exporters Association

If the government does not lower import charges at the ports, the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana warns that prices would continue to rise uncontrollably.

The organization has disclosed that there have been significant variations in import taxes and levies at the port recently as a result of some variations in the exchange rate set by the Ghana Revenue Authority’s Customs Division.
They also disclosed that as of Tuesday, September 27, 2022, an exchange rate of 8 cedis, 3 pesewas, has been pegged at 9 cedis, 5 pesewas, and that this rate is subject to change on Monday, October 3, 2022.

In an interview with Citi Business News, General Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, Samson Asaki Awingobit said authorities must as a matter of urgency, adopt pragmatic measures to ensure these abnormal costs being incurred by Importers, freight Forwarders, and Traders are mitigated.

“If the new charges at the ports happen to be an error on the part of government then they should reverse it but if its the reality that that is the true reflection of what customs has given sanctioned by the Bank of Ghana and the Ministry of Finance then they are putting a burden on the business community that they cannot contain”.

He stressed, “Many people are running helplessly at the port, if they should cough up huge amounts to pay duties then how much will they sell their goods and that is why we will continue to see price increment now and then.”

Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor, wants a non-partisan approach in dealing with the menace of illegal mining.

  • Steve-O on Bam Margera’s alcoholism: ‘I’m never gonna give up on him’

Steve-O has shared a disheartening update on Bam Margera’s addiction recovery.

The Jackass star addressed the issue during a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s Faction Talk, revealing he had spoken to Margera earlier this week.

“He sounded super drunk, but he was in good spirits,” Steve-O told hosts Jim Norton and Sam Roberts. “It’s so fuckin’ nuts how he’s not just resistant to the idea of surrendering to recovery, but just how he literally just doesn’t seem to grasp the ‘disease concept.’ He’s like, ‘Ma, if I just stay busy … It’s when I’m not busy doing stuff all the time, I get into trouble …’  It’s, like, that’s not how it works, dude. You think you would know that by now.”

Steve-O went on to say that he has nothing but love for Margera and will “never give up on him.”

“I’ve been physically present at almost every stop on his years-long tour of rehabs and psych wards,” he continued. “… I’m careful never to try to push sobriety on anybody. I feel strongly that if you do that what you’re actually doing is pushing them away from sobriety.”

Steve-O said he makes it a point to allow Margera “do his thing,” and doesn’t lecture him until he goes back to a rehab facility.

“That’s when it’s appropriate,” he added. “I go, ‘So since you’re here, let’s make the most of it … Nobody shows up in rehab by mistake, let alone a fuckin’ dozen times.”

Steve-O then spoke about Margera’s highly publicized feud with the Jackass crew. After he was fired from the Jackass Forever film, Margera accused Paramount Pictures, MTV Networks, Jeff Tremaine, Johnny Knoxville, and Spike Jonze of violating his civil rights. According to a lawsuit, producers ordered Margera to sign a “wellness agreement” that required him to undergo regular drug testing. After he allegedly tested positive for drugs, he was booted from the film; however, Margera claimed the drug in question was Adderall, which his doctor prescribed to him.

Steve-O described himself as the “Switzerland of Jackass,” and never had any animosity toward Margera.

“I’ve done absolutely nothing to try to sugarcoat anything,” he explained. “… My relationship with him is great. When I spoke to him a couple nights ago, he goes, ‘Dude, you know, I just want to thank you, man, because you’ve always been there for me.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’ve always been there to tell you how awful the situation is.’”

You can hear Steve-O’s full comments above. The 48-year-old is now promoting his new book, A Hard Kick in the Nuts, in which he addresses his own struggles with addiction and road to sobriety.

  • Snoop Dogg working with Dr. Dre on ‘missionary’ album

It’s confirmed. Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre have a new album on deck.

During an appearance on Stephen A. Smith’s Know Mercy podcast, Snoop spoke about his bond with Dre and the evolution of their symbiotic relationship. After highlighting their early collaborations, the West Coast legend revealed he and Dre had started working on a full-length album over the summer.

“You’re the first one to hear this: Me and Dr. Dre have been working on an album for the past two months, and it’ll be done in November,” he told Smith (34:50). “And it’s produced by Dr. Dre. It’s our 30th anniversary to Doggystyle. And the name of the album is Missionary.

“Why that name?” the host asked.

“[Because] the first album was Doggystyle,” Snoop responded.

Rumors of a Snoop and Dre joint effort began circulating earlier this year, after the two were spotted in the studio with figures like Saweetie, EPMD’s Erick Sermon, and Eminem.

Snoop went on to tease the effort in a number of interviews with outlets like Rap Radar and ET Online; but he remained tight-lipped on what he and Dre had in store.

“We’re cooking up a little something,” he told the latter publication. “I don’t wanna talk about it too much, but we’re back together again. It’s been 30 years since we worked on a record, and we’re doing something, we’re working on something.”

After years with N.W.A., Dre kicked off his solo career with his 1992 single “Deep Cover,” which marked his first collaboration with Snoop. They then joined forces on Dre’s debut album, The Chronic, before teaming up on the aforementioned Doggystyle. Since then, Snoop and Dre have established themselves as one of hip-hop’s most prolific and powerful duo.

Earlier this year, the two reunited for the Super Bowl LVI halftime show along with Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar, 50 Cent, and more. Snoop spoke about the performance during his sit-down with Smith. The host said he enjoyed the event, but wished Snoop and performed “Who Am I (What’s My Name)?”

“It wasn’t my show. It was Dr. Dre’s. I was there to be the co-pilot …” the rapper replied. “It was only 12 minutes of performance between Dr. Dre’s catalog, Snoop Dogg’s catalog, 50 Cent’s catalog, Mary J’s catalog, and Kendrick’s—and Eminem’s.”

  • New cocoa price to be announced early next week – Agric Ministry

Government is set to announce a new price for cocoa early next week at the opening day of the crop season, as the committee working on the new pricing is yet to conclude its work.

Cocoa farmers in the country have since been urged to help in governments fight against illegal mining by desisting from selling farm lands to illegal miners, popularly known as galamseyers.

According to stakeholders in the sector, the practice if not checked can wipe away all the gains by the cocoa sector.

The government raised concerns about the continuous sale of farmlands, especially cocoa plantations, to illegal miners.

It has become evidently clear that majority of farmers in cocoa-growing areas in the country are now selling off cocoa plantations to illegal miners, who are causing destruction to lands and water bodies.

Speaking at the climax of a 4-day cocoa exhibition in Suhum to mark cocoa day celebrations, the Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong noted that “the sale of cocoa lands to illegal miners if not checked has a potential of collapsing the cocoa sector.”

Delivering an address on behalf of the President of the Cocoa and Coffee Farmers Association, Alhaji Abubakari Alhassan appealed to government to intensify the galamsey fight to save the sector.

The Board Chairman of Cocobod, Mr Peter Mark Manu delivering his address disclosed that the implementation of the much-awaited Cocoa Farmers Pension Scheme will begin this month.

He then called on cocoa farmers to “desist from using children as labourers on cocoa farms and stop the sale of cocoa plantations to illegal miners.”

This year’s celebration which has coincided with COCOBOD’s 75th anniversary and as such Okyehene Amoatia Ofori Panyin the Overlord of Akyem Abuakwa who was the chairman at the event called for realignment of interest of Ghana’s interest in the cocoa sector by paying attention to the interest of the cocoa farmer.

The Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, speaking on behalf of his boss Dr. Afriyie Akoto called on cocoa farmers to “exercise restraint as government works to announce new cocoa prices early next week.”

  • California decriminalizes safe Jaywalking

California has significantly loosened its jaywalking laws.

On Friday, Gov. Gavin Newsom officially signed AB 2147, aka the Freedom to Walk Act. The legislation essentially decriminalizes jaywalking in most instances, as it allows pedestrians to walk outside the designated intersections without being ticketed. However, there are some cases in which jaywalking citations will be issued.

Los Angeles Times reports a person can disregard crossing points as long as it’s safe to do so. The bill, authored by Assemblyman Phil Ting (D-San Francisco) states a peace officer cannot stop a pedestrian for jaywalking “unless a reasonably careful person would realize there is an immediate danger of collision with a moving vehicle or other device moving exclusively by human power.”

Newsom rejected a similar bill in 2021, despite activists’ claims that the state’s jaywalking laws disproportionately affected marginalized and lower-income groups. Ting’s office cited data from the California Racial and Identity Profiling Act, which showed that Black Californians are up to four and a half times more likely to be stopped for jaywalking than white pedestrians.

“It should not be a criminal offense to safely cross the street,” Ting said in a statement. “When expensive tickets and unnecessary confrontations with police impact only certain communities, it’s time to reconsider how we use our law enforcement resources and whether our jaywalking laws really do protect pedestrians. Plus, we should be encouraging people to get out of their cars and walk for health and environmental reasons.”

The law will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2023.

  • We are the best option for Ghanaians – PPP

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) blames the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the prevailing stiff economic conditions in the country.

The party believes it is the next viable option to turn the country’s fortune around.

It also expressed its resolve to investigate thoroughly the private sector clean-up that resulted in most businesses collapsing, including its founder, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom.

Speaking to Citi News on the sidelines of the party’s 10 years anniversary celebration, the flagbearer of the 2020 elections, Bridget Dzogbenuku said the party is poised to secure power in the next elections.

  • Prayer camps are not a breast cancer cure – Dr Wiafe-Addai

Prayer camps and spirituality, according to Dr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Wiafe-Addai, president of BreastCare International (BCI), have no place in finding a solution to the rising incidence of breast cancer in Ghana.

She prefers a focus on science and early case reporting at medical facilities.

Dr. (Mrs.) Wiafe-Addai stated that after a breast cancer diagnosis, obtaining assistance at a recognized medical center for prompt treatment was the best course of action, while not discounting the significance of prayer.

    Statistics

Currently, 4,600 Ghanaians are diagnosed of breast cancer each year out of which 2,000 are killed by the disease.

“The increase in cases and mortality are due to the fact that people still believe that taking in herbal concoctions and visiting prayer camps will bring healing to them.

“Breast cancer is not a result of a curse of witchcraft. There’s a solution for it once to our seek early help at a health facility,” Dr (Mrs) Wiafe-Addai, who is also the CEO of Peace and Love Hospital said at Tepa on Saturday.

    Occasion

She was speaking at the 10th annual national Breast Cancer Ghana Walk held at Tepa in the Ahafo Ano North district.

It was under the theme: “Breast cancer won’t rest, so why should we?”

It was the first time the exercise, meant to educate people on the disease was being held outside a regional capital.

Dr. (Mrs) Wiafe-Addai said Tepa was chosen because of the special role the chief of the traditional area, Nana Adusei Atwenewaa Ampem I, has played in the fight against the disease and also to honour him on his 60th birthday.

She said the disease does not only affect the breast but spreads to other parts of the body which if not taken care of, could lead to death.

The president of BreastCare International seized the opportunity to take people through self-examination while organising free screening for everyone.

    Attendance

People from all walks of life including music icons such as Rev. Obaapa Christy, Akosua Agyepong, ACP Kofi Sarpong and Patience Nyarko, joined in the walk and the durbar.

The “celebrities” thrilled the fans with their scintillating renditions while Akosua Agyepong relived her dancing days on stage which was greeted with loud cheers.

The chief of Tepa, Nana Adusei Atwenewaa Ampem I, urged men to help examine the breasts of their wives on regular basis through holding and “even sucking.”

He said the actual cause of the disease was still not known “but I can say that Satan has no hand in it and, therefore, we should stop spiritualising it.”

Nana Ampem I promised to offer a parcel of land to Breast care International for a breast cancer hospital to be established to cater for people in that part of the country.

He said the facility could also serve as a research centre for the disease.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Ahafo Ano North, Martina Appiah-Nyantakyi, called for more collaboration between the private sector and government to assist women with conditions because most of them shied away from hospitals due to lack of funds.

She promised to work closely with Breastcare International to take the fight to schools to help dispel myths associated with the disease.

There were goodwill messages from some international bodies and some individuals who believe in the fight including the Moroccan ambassador to Ghana, Iamane Quaadil.

  • Artificial Intelligence important in Creative Arts Industry – GI-KACE

Dr Collins Yeboah-Afari, Director-General, Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT (GI-KACE) has underscored the significance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Creative Art Industry in boosting Ghana’s revenue generation.

AI is the ability of a computer or a robot controlled by a computer to do tasks that are usually done by humans because they require human intelligence and discernment.

Speaking at the GI-KACE’s AI knowledge series forum on music, entertainment, culture and the creative arts, Dr Yeboah-Afari stated that with the right application of AI in the Creative Arts Industry, several jobs would be created in that space which will also increase revenue and impact Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“The adoption of AI technologies in the music, entertainment, culture and Creative Arts industry will promote professionalism and enhance the quality of output churned out by the various players in the industry,” he stated.
“This will also help showcase our talents to the rest of the world while in turn increasing the tourism value of Ghana.”

He noted that the session’s relevance was to help create awareness about the opportunities available in using AI in the music, entertainment, culture, and Creative Arts industry.

He said the event forms part of GI-KACE’s mandate to grow the ICT ecosystem in the ECOWAS sub-region and contribute to youth development while the Centre tries to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Mr Kobby ‘Spiky’ Nkrumah, Host of Joy Geek Squad, Multimedia Group, in his presentation on “How AI is Transforming the Music Industry Globally,” disclosed that AI was striking a chord in the music industry with many artists employing artificial intelligence in their music-making process.

He added that some AIs had been developed so well that they could even analyse the style of musicians and create songs based on the data collected, which will sound exactly like the musicians themselves.

“There are a few AI-powered music production platforms like JUKE Box and iZotope, that can create and master music once all the right elements like genre and lyrics are provided,” Mr Nkrumah said.

“Some of these platforms can even continue the beat production for you if you want them to. Digital music streaming platforms like Apple Music, Spotify and the like are AI-powered that analyses what you listen to regularly and send music recommendations to keep you updated on new trending songs based on your taste in music,” he added.

  • Sam George deletes post about alleged ECG system attack

Samuel Nartey George, the representative for Ningo Prampram, has removed a Facebook post about the alleged cyberattack on the systems of the Ghanaian Electricity Company.

On Sunday, October 3, 2022, Mr. George wrote the following: “The ECG has a number of really major problems.
Their system was attacked internally by a group of “criminals,” not from outside the organization “.

The MP urged the government to launch a forensic probe into the IT section of ECG after claiming to have information that a gang had been stealing more than GH200 million per month from the firm.

    Situation

Since last Tuesday, many ECG customers had struggled to purchase credit on their prepaid meters, either by using the ECG App or from vending outlets.

The power supplier had encountered technical challenges with its ECash and PNS Metering System which has made it impossible for customers to purchase credit.

The situation has been partially resolved as of October 2, 2022, with customers now able to purchase electricity credits through third-party vendors.

    Explanation

In a follow-up, Mr George said he had deleted the “post out of respect for the work I have just been informed is being done on the matter”.

He said he did not intend to compromise the remedial steps ECG was taking to resolve the situation.

“I do not intend in any way to compromise the remedial steps underway. I can assure you all that I would continue to follow the matter and update the public on the actions taken to ensure such treachery against our Country NEVER happens again!”.

  • At least 125 dead in Indonesian soccer stampede

At least 125 people are dead after a crowd stampede erupted Saturday night during a soccer match at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang, Indonesia.

As reported by the New York Times, local officials initially confirmed the death toll to be 174, but have since reduced the number. Supports of Persebaya Surabaya and Arema FC clashed following the match, prompting police to fire tear gas, which triggered a stampede that left many trampled and suffocated.

More than 300 people were injured, in what is one of the deadliest events in sporting history. The tragedy is only eclipsed by a 1964 stampede that left 328 people killed during a Peru-Argentina Olympic qualifier in Lima.

“The football world is in a state of shock following the tragic incidents that have taken place in Indonesia at the end of the match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya at the Kanjuruhan Stadium,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said in an official statement.

He continued, “This is a dark day for all involved in football and a tragedy beyond comprehension. I extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims who lost their lives following this tragic incident.

“Together with FIFA and the global football community, all our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, those who have been injured, together with the people of the Republic of Indonesia, the Asian Football Confederation, the Indonesian Football Association, and the Indonesian Football League, at this difficult time.”

  • Be circumspect in your coverage of conflict – NMC tells radio stations in Bawku

The National Media Commission (NMC) has charged media operators in the Bawku Municipality to be circumspect in their reportage of the ongoing conflict in the area.

The Commission said they should not allow their platforms to be used to foment trouble.

In a press release on Sunday, it also asked owners of radio stations to be careful as to who they invite as guests on their shows.

“Consequently, the Commission hereby cautions radio stations and their staff that drastic consequences attend on culpability.

“We call on owners of radio stations in Bawku to adopt stronger gatekeeping measures to ensure that persons with interests in the conflict do not hijack radio stations to foment trouble.

“Owners must be careful who they recruit as programme hosts and which persons are invited as guests on discussion programmes.

“They must remember that they bear ultimate responsibility for whatever happens on their networks,” portions of the release said.

Bawku has been a hotspot for clashes between residents of various ethnic groups.

In August 2022, at least three persons – who are all males – were shot by unknown persons in the community.

A Northern Electricity Development Company transformer was also destroyed during a shooting incident, leaving residents in fear and shock.

The government has on several occasions imposed a curfew on the town to calm tensions and maintain law and order.

However, the conflict has not been resolved.

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has joined the number of institutions that have moved their operations from the town.

SSNIT evacuated its staff and removed furnishings and other items from its office including chairs and air-conditioners on Saturday, October 1, 2022.

  • Who is in charge of security? Why haven’t we been able to stop galamsey? – Asantehene

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has questioned why the security services haven’t been able to stop illegal mining (galamsey) in Ghana.

He claims that despite several initiatives and promises made by the government to eradicate the problem, galamsey is on the rise.

On Friday, September 30, 2022, the US Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia E. Palmer, paid him a courtesy visit at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

“However, who is in charge of the neighborhood’s security? up to the highest level, starting at the district level.
Everyone here is discussing galamsey. Why have we been unable to stop it if the government set up the military and police to do it?

If you create a system that you say you will stop it to the extent that the president says “I will put my presidency on the line, and yet it is going on. Then to me, something is wrong somewhere. So we need to know why this is happening, polluting our waters”, he said.

Otumfuo also questioned the District and Municipal Security Councils over their failure to fight the menace.

“At the district level, we have the political administration, District Chief Executive, and the Security Council. Are they all saying that they are unaware of the activities of these galamseyers? If they are unable to detect and stop the operation of these galamseyers then they are unworthy to be there, it is as simple as that.”

  • New York proposes offering money to people who report Bike-Lane violations

New York City council members are considering a new proposal that would compensate civilians for reporting bike-lane violations.

Bloomberg reports the Department of Transportation is reviewing the bill, which would pay individuals who submit evidence of a parking violation 25% of a proposed $175 ticket.

Lincoln Restler, a city council member, says that the New York City Police Department, which has been responsible for monitoring the aforementioned infractions, haven’t been handing out enough tickets.

“I feel the safety risks every day that are associated with illegal parking,” Restler said. “It’s even more problematic for the parent pushing a stroller or a person in a wheelchair who can’t get by on the sidewalk because of illegally parked cars. That’s why we are creating, in this legislation, a new structure to bring real accountability.”

The bill would create a new violation and civil penalty for hazardous obstruction by a vehicle of a bicycle lane, bus lane when bus lane restrictions are in effect, sidewalk, crosswalk, or fire hydrant when such vehicle is located within a radial distance of 1,320 feet of a school building, entrance, or exit.

Such violations would be returnable to the Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings (OATH). The proposed legislation would require the Department of Transportation (DOT) to create a civilian reporting program where civilians are able to submit complaints and supporting evidence for alleged violations to DOT.

Sarah Kaufman, interim executive director of the New York University Rudin Center for Transportation, told Bloomberg that giving civilians the power to hold their peers accountable could lead to equity issues.

“Wealthier residents tend to call in more and report issues,” Kaufman explained. “In every city that has a 311 system it tends to be whiter, wealthier residents who are calling.”

  • Cedi ranked second worst-performing currency in the world – Bloomberg report

According to a Bloomberg analysis, the Ghana Cedi has the second-worst performance of any currency in the world, trailing only the Sri Lankan Rupee.

The Cedi’s value decline against the US dollar in the first nine months of 2022, according to the worldwide news portal, was the worst in more than 30 years.

As a result of the development, the Ghana Cedi is currently ranked 147th among all major currencies worldwide.

Bloomberg further said the performance of the Cedi has made it the worst among 30 top-performing currencies on the African continent.

Ghana’s Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta recently disclosed that the Ghana Cedi depreciated by 37.1 percent against the US Dollar as of September 27, 2022.

At the start of 2022, demand for forex overtook supplies during a period when high debts and low investor confidence have made it impossible for Ghana to access the international capital market for borrowing.

The situation resulted in the persistent depreciation of the Cedi against the major trading currencies.

As at July this year, the cedi lost its value by more than 20 percent to the US dollar.

In addition, recent economic downgrades by international rating agencies such as Fitch and Standards & Poors’ has also impacted the investor community at large, while Ghana awaits an IMF support programme which is expected to be accessed in 2023.

  • Deaf Association calls for deaf-friendly curriculum for deaf learners

The Ghanaian National Association of the Deaf (GNAD) has called on the Ministry of Education, through the Ghana Education Service, to provide deaf learners with a deaf-friendly curriculum.

In an interview with the media, President of GNAD, Mr Matthew Kubacha, said deaf students needed a curriculum that was favourable and responded to their needs.

According to Mr. Kubacha, using non-deaf friendly curriculum for deaf learners has disastrous consequences for their education and examinations.

Mr Kunacha highlighted inequalities in the current curriculum, citing parts of the system that require learners to understand specific sounds in order to aid learning and comprehension.

“How do you expect deaf students to write the same examinations as the hearing when certain parts of the curriculum demand that a person must understand certain aspects of speech?” He asked.

The President attributed the challenge to the belief that sign language is under-recognized in the country and thus does not receive adequate attention in all areas of policymaking.

Mr Kubacha observed that, while many trained deaf graduates from universities and colleges were not assigned to teach deaf children, some teachers assigned to deaf schools struggled to master Sign Language.

Where teachers lacked understanding of Ghanaian Sign Language, they were unable to effectively communicate course and curriculum content to deaf students, according to the GNAD President.

He stated that some deaf people were unemployed because society had perceived them to be incapable, and employers were hesitant to hire them due to doubts about their capabilities.

Mr Kubacha said it was worrying to observe that the deaf were excluded from family and social engagements, as well as government policies.

“Our families and communities do not involve us in meetings and activities because they think that since we cannot hear, we cannot do anything,” Mr Kubacha said.

The President appealed to public institutions to include them in the design and sharing of information to make their lives easy.

The International Day of Sign Languages, commemorated globally on September 23 every year, is to raise awareness of the importance of sign language for the full realization of the human rights of deaf people.

This year’s celebration is on the theme: “Sign Languages Unite Us.”

  • Soldiers not providing security for mining companies – Armed Forces

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has denied the allegation of deploying military officials to provide security for some mining firms in Ghana.

On 26 September 2022, an Accra-based media house, Joy news, aired a documentary in which one Nana Kusi Frempong Kotobre, Mentiahene of Bekwai, alleged that some soldiers have been deployed to offer security for an illegal mining firm operating in the Kobro Forest in Amansie Central.

The GAF in a press release signed and issued on Friday, September 30, 2022, by the Director of Public Relations, Naval Captain Michael Addo Larbi describing the reportage as misleading asked the general public to disregard the allegation.

“In a video with some recycled content of past unsubstantiated allegations which have since gone viral, Mentiahene of Bekwai, Nana Kusi Frempong Kotobre, alleges that military personnel are providing security for an illegal mining firm operating in the Kobro Forest in Amansie Central. GAF wishes to state categorically that there are no military personnel deployed for such activities and no soldier is providing security for any mining company in any forest reserve in any part of the country.”

Giving more insight into the allegations, Naval Captain Michael Addo Larbi stated that the attire worn by the men seen in the circulated video is not that of the Ghana Armed Forces uniform.

The pattern of the uniform donned by the men is a US military camouflage.

He further alleged that the men in uniform were contracted by a registered small-scale mining company named ‘Elvis and Co Mining Ltd’.

“These private security guards should not be misconstrued as GAF personnel because their camouflage pattern uniforms are even totally distinct from GAF.”

Nonetheless, he said these men working for a private security firm and alleging to be military personnel have been picked up by security agency for investigation.

GAF noted that several impersonators in recent times have also been arrested and handed over to the Police for prosecution.

GAF further pledged its commitment to revamp it operations in order to aid the fight against illegal mining.

“Accordingly, GAF has revamped Operation Halt II in order to intensify its surgical operations to curb the destruction of the forest reserves and pollution of the river bodies.”

  • Eschew divisive acts – Manya Jorpanya youth urged at Ngmayem festival

Nene Teidjahene Korabo IV, the Senior Asafoatse of the Shai Osudoku Traditional Area, has urged the youth of Manya Jorpanya in the Greater Accra Region to abstain from behaviors that might cause division in the community.

Even though Nene Korabo had worked for the advancement of his people, he claimed that only a small number of backwards-thinking individuals had promised to undo the hard-won progress made thus far.

Therefore, he appealed to the young to join him and his elders in eradicating these villains from the neighborhood and establishing Manya Jorpanya as the people of the Shai Osudoku Traditional Area’s glimmer of hope.

Making the call at the celebration of this year’s Ngmayem festival by the chiefs and people of Manya Jorpanya last Saturday, he said: “We have come from far and as a people with one destiny and one destination, we ought to be seen working as a team to achieve the same purpose.”

He further urged the youth to uphold the peace they were enjoying in the area and emulate such a gesture from their leader.

The festival was also used to mark the 24th anniversary of his enstoolment as the chief of the area.

The festival, which is celebrated annually, is aimed at harnessing great strides, bridging the gap between the rich and the poor, counting the achievements and ensuring ultimate peace among indigenes of Manya Jorpanya and surrounding communities.

The occasion was on the theme: “Upholding our cultural values after the COVID-19 Pandemic”.

    Peace

Addressing a durbar to climax the festival, Nene Korabo commended the people of Manya Jorpanya for the discipline, dedication and exhibition of peace among themselves, which had become the subject of discussion by neighbouring communities.

“As a chief, who has the people at heart, I have made it my policy to uphold the principles and values of my forebears in high esteem and until each person is provided with basic amenities I will not rest,” he stated.

“In September each year, the chiefs, elders and the people of Manya Jorpanya ensure that we gather at a unique ground to share the achievements and put in place measures to keep us above and not below.

He said despite the challenges, much of his efforts were inspired by dedicated and dynamic family heads, subchiefs, queenmothers, opinion leaders and other citizens and he thanked them for their immense contributions towards the successful development in the area.

He appealed to residents of the area to rally behind their elders to make Manya Jorpanya a haven.

    Commendation

Speaking on behalf of the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the Shai Osudoku Area, Fred Ofei Twum, the Presiding Member of the area, Noah Sobutey, stated that the achievements of Nene Korabo had received a commendation from across the traditional area and attributed this to his selflessness, dedication to his core mandate and his openness and readiness to listen to everyone.

He, therefore, urged the youth to remain resolute and optimistic as the district continued to find ways and means to reduce unemployment and, therefore, reduce poverty in the area and in Ghana.

    Truthfulness

The Chief of Gomoa Dasum, Nana Obokomatta IX, said governance was a shared responsibility and as such even though traditional leaders had made frantic efforts to bring relief and development to their respective areas, it behoved politicians to be truthful and respect the views of the people.

  • Chlöe reveals she wrote song “for the night” about Gunna

Chlöe Bailey shared on Twitter Spaces over the weekend that her upcoming song “For the Night” is about Gunna.

“Imma tell y’all a little secret about ‘For The Night,’” she said, transcript courtesy of HNHH. “I might regret saying this, but hey, maybe it’ll help f*cking streams. I don’t even think he knows this! I wrote ‘For The Night’ about Gunna.”

Chlöe revealed she wrote the song after Gunna’s Jan. 2022 interview with The Breakfast Club, where he downplayed relationship rumors, asserting they were “really close friends.” The “Have Mercy” singer also pushed back against talks of a romance on Instagram Live the following week. “I feel like everybody wants to know about my love life. My love life is music, darling,” she said in a British accent.

Despite their best efforts to dissuade the public from thinking they were anything more than friends, the two looked very much like a couple while shopping in L.A., just days before Valentine’s Day.

Gunna was arrested on RICO charges three months later, and will remain behind bars until his trial date on Jan. 9, 2023. Chlöe stated no one should question her support for him because she isn’t outspoken about it. “I’m a songwriter. I write my own shit, I get inspired by the smallest things, so, kiss my ass,” she said, laughing. “Talkin’ bout why don’t I say free this, or free that? Kiss my ass, I support in real life. Thank you!”

Chlöe also established that she isn’t in a relationship at the moment, saying, “I’m single, guys. Sorry to bust bubbles, but when I wrote that song months ago, I wrote it about him.”

  • Electronic VAT invoicing takes off – 600 Firms covered under 1st phase

Businesses can now issue value-added tax (VAT) bills to the public using an electronic (e) invoicing system that has been made available by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

It was launched last Saturday after Section 42 of the VAT Act, 2013 (Act 870) was amended to make electronic invoicing (e-invoicing) the only method for generating VAT invoices. This system is referred to as the e-VAT invoicing system.

The method is designed to help the GRA combat the many frauds that it claims are costing the state billions of cedis in lost tax income.

Since VAT is a consumption tax, the electronic system will allow most of the population to contribute to the tax basket and answers calls for the tax next to be widened.

Under the first phase of the implementation, the exercise will cover more than 600 large taxpayers, including listed companies, which account for more than 80 per cent of domestic revenue and up to 90 per cent of VAT collections.

It is expected to cover all VAT taxpayers by 2024.

    Benefits

The Head of the Domestic Tax Revenue Division (DTRD) at GRA, Edward Apenteng Gyamerah, told a section of the media last Friday that the e-VAT invoicing would also help the authority to monitor transactions in real-time, thereby ensuring transparency and eliminating under-invoicing, under carding and non-issuance of VAT invoices.

He said through the exercise, GRA aimed to raise VAT’s contribution to tax revenue to 20 per cent by December this year and 30 per cent in 2024.

Currently, VAT accounts for a maximum of 18 per cent of annual total tax revenue, below the 30 per cent average done by Ghana’s peer countries.

    Phased implementation

Mr Gyamerah said the e-VAT invoicing would be implemented in phases, with the large and high-risk taxpayers being the first to be covered between October and the second quarter of next year followed by medium taxpayers by December 2023.

“Through this e-invoicing and other compliance mechanisms such as the mystery purchases and inspection, we hope to move VAT contribution to tax revenues at par or above what our peers are doing.

“The African average is around 30 per cent but ours is just about 18 per cent maximum and that is not good for us as a country,” he said.

    Mode of implementation

On how the e-VAT invoicing would work, Mr Gyamerah said GRA had developed a system that would be integrated into the systems that some businesses currently used to print VAT invoices.

For businesses that GRA had not authorised to use their own systems in generating VAT invoices, he said the authority would provide a free e-invoicing system to them.

With regard to the e-TCC, he said businesses only needed to enter their details into the e-TCC portal for the certificates to be generated automatically.

Mr Gyamerah, therefore, appealed to businesses and the general public to cooperate with the authority to make the exercise smooth.

He said tax payment was critical to national development and it behoved every citizen and corporate organisation to do its part in ensuring that the right revenue accrued to the state.

    Benefits

Mr Gyamerah was optimistic that the successful rollout of the e-VAT invoicing and the e-TCC would help to strengthen transparency and convenience in tax payments.

He said the system allowed GRA to have access to transactions at the backend.

“Then, the e-VAT invoicing system is going to curtail a lot of abuses which the manual system currently has.

“The issue of businesses asking you whether or not you want VAT invoice will be a thing of the past.

“With the electronic invoicing, you are required to pick an invoice and that invoice is the GRA Commissioner-General-certified invoice and the customer has no choice but to pick it,” he said.

The Head of the DTRD warned that customers that failed to pick up the invoice risked being penalised by the law, including suffering a 15-month jail term.

“Also, we are going to extend this invoicing software to taxpayers that are currently not registered as VAT collectors. The result is that we will be able to improve upon compliance and we will have an audit trail of all transactions, making it easier for us to see the volumes of transactions to be able to assess taxes correctly,” Mr Gyamerah said.

    Tax digitalisation

Mr Gyamerah explained that the e-invoicing rollout formed part of a tax digitalisation programme by the authority.

According to him, the e-TCC was deployed to all businesses from last Saturday.

The Head of the DTRD of GRA said the programme was aimed at improving compliance by prioritising convenience, efficiency and speed in tax payments.

He said under the tax digitalisation initiative, cashless payments of taxes and online filing of tax returns had been rolled out while the e-VAT invoicing was now being introduced simultaneously with an electronic tax clearance certificate (e-TCC).

He explained that the e-TCC allowed taxpayers to generate their certificates online, thereby eliminating the human involvement that led to the faking of such certificates.

Ghana legend, Asamoah Gyan, has described the year 2010 as the best year in his playing career as a footballer.

Gyan became one of the best strikers in Europe for both his country and club.

Following his explosive performance, the former Udinese Calcio star was named the BBC African Footballer of the Year in 2010 while also making CAF’s Team of the Year.

In the 2010 Mundial in South Africa, Gyan was a key figure and assisted the country to play in the quarterfinals first time in the country’s history.

However, the Black Stars’ chances of playing in the semifinal was denied after losing to Uruguay on penalties.

Quizzed on the best year of his career, the former Sunderland man told DStv, “2010 was my best year. It started in January in Angola in the Africa Cup.

I came to music and music was working. Everything was working for me in 2010 so going there I knew I was going to deliver,” he added.

Gyan remains the country’s top goal scorer and Africa’s top goal scorer in the history of the World Cup.

The 37-year-old has been out of action for close to two years after leaving Ghana Premier League side Legon Cities at the end of the 2020/21 season.

  • Will Smith Speaks Publicly About ‘Emancipation’ After Film’s First Screening

Will Smith said a few words about his Apple film Emancipation following its first screening at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 51st Annual Legislative Conference, hosted by the NAACP, on Saturday.

“Throughout my career, I’ve turned down many films that were set in slavery,” Smith said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “I never wanted to show us like that. And then this picture came along. And this is not a film about slavery. This is a film about freedom. This is a film about resilience. This is a film about faith.”

The comments mark Smith’s first time addressing an audience since he infamously slapped Chris Rock at the most recent Oscars.

“This is a film about the heart of a man—what could be called the first viral image,” Smith continued. “Cameras had just been created, and the image of whipped Peter went around the world. It was a rallying cry against slavery, and this was a story that exploded and blossomed in my heart that I wanted to be able to deliver to you in a way that only Antoine Fuqua could deliver.”

Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer), Emancipation tells the true story of Peter, who escaped a plantation in Louisiana and survived the elements in pursuit of his family. Smith’s reference to the “first viral image” is in regards to the photograph taken of Peter’s brutally whipped back during a medical examination after he joined the Union Army.

While Smith’s public image has been largely tarnished, reactions to the film were largely positive.

THR suspects the shining response to the screening of Emancipation could mean that Apple intends on releasing the film soon, despite the complications that arose following the incident at the Oscars. Check out some of the more glowing first reactions below.

Variety reported in May that Emancipation would be shelved until “sometime in 2023” following the Oscars slap, which led to the actor receiving a 10-year ban from the Academy.

“We have tried our level best to make a case with Mercedes-Benz in Germany without luck, all appeals failed to have produce any response from them leaving us no choice but to seek redress from the courts,

  • Ghana to host first ever African conference on responsible gaming

Ghana has been granted the honour of hosting the first African conference on responsible gaming, according to Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Sammy Awuku.

Speaking at the launch of the NLA’s diamond jubilee on September 29, 2022, in Accra, Mr Awuku stated that the conference “will be held concurrently between December 7 and 10, 2022.”

The African conference on responsible gaming is part of efforts to strengthen ties between African lottery countries and to improve lottery operations across the continent.

Stressing its significance to Ghana, Mr Awuku noted that the conference “will bring to the fore and expose Ghana as well to several delegations from various African countries where the lottery also takes place.”

Ghana has also been reinstated as a member of the African Lottery Association, also known as the Association des Loteries d’Afrique (ALA).

ALA is a branch of the World Lottery Association and a non-profit organization representing the interests of state-authorised lottery and sports betting operators throughout Africa.

The primary mission of the association is to unite public, mixed, and private companies that hold a monopoly, licence, or concession from African states for the operation of games of chance, in order to further socio-economic development across the African continent in priority sectors such as education, health, culture, and sport.

Ghana was no longer considered a member due to its inactivity in the operations of the associations.

However, due to conversations between the current leadership of the NLA, headed by Mr Awuku, and representatives of ALA, Ghana has been readmitted.
“In Ivory Coast currently, their director-general is the president of (ALA). We made a case to him, they also have to waive off some penalties and charges that have been accumulating because of our inactivity within the body,” Awuku said.

“So, all things being equal, we have completed discussions with them regarding the membership of the African Lottery Association, and I am happy to announce that we have been readmitted back into the African Lottery Association,” Mr Awuku said while announcing this in February.

Mr Awuku, at the launch of the anniversary, was very optimistic about the collaborations between the African countries in the industry yielding positive results.
