  • Potential land buyers encouraged to study Land Act 2020

According to Mr. George Okwabi Frimpong, a member of the Licensed Surveyors Association, the Land Act 2020 (Act 1036) aims to eliminate repeated land sales and bring some sanity to land disputes in the nation.

Before transactions, he advised prospective land purchasers and investors to review the relevant portions of the Land Act 2020 (Act 1036) and consult with qualified land surveyors.

“If you are interested in property, in any shape or form, you need to know a few things from the Act, so you don’t fall victim to land concerns,” said Mr. Okwabi Frimpong, a former senior staff member of the Lands Commission.

Mr. Okwabi Frimpong was speaking at the “Ghana News Agency –Tema Regional Office’s Stakeholder Engagement and Workers’ Appreciation Day,” Seminar which is a progressive platform created to give opportunity to state and non-state actors to interact with journalists and address national issues.

The event also serves as a motivational mechanism to recognize the editorial contribution of reporters to the professional growth and promotion of the Tema Regional Branch of the Ghana News Agency as the industrial news hub, while contributing to national development.

Mr. Okwabi said the Act seeks to save many Ghanaians from falling victim to the many land issues the country was confronted with as the act empowers the Lands Commission and Ministry of Lands to come out with some regulations and legislative instruments (LI) to operationalize it.

Mr. Okwabi Frimpong noted that going contrary to the law would attract a fine of not less than 5,000 penalty units and not more than 10,000 penalty units.

He said the law mandated a family or group which owns land to establish a Customary Land Secretariat – a small unit to manage the land at the local, family, or stool level whereby “all land transactions have to be recorded.”

Mr. Okwabi Frimpong explained that the Lands Commission and the office of the Administrator of Stool Lands had been mandated to provide technical services to the Customary Land Secretariat.

  • I am depressed in my marriage with Dr UN – Joyce Dzidzor

When Joyce Dzidzor Mensah, a former AIDS Ambassador announced her marriage to Dr UN, the organizer of the infamous Kofi Annan UN Awards, the general public wondered whether the move was just for hype or a real deal.

The new bride in a disturbing post on Thursday announced that she has hit depression.

According to Joyce, she is “going through a lot right now.”

The wife of Kwame Owusu Fordjour, known chiefly as Dr UN, has proposed that the lifetime union between a man and woman should be made renewable by contract.

“I think marriage should be contractual. Maximum years of living together 3 years and minimum of one month so that when both of you are not compatible, you can terminate the marriage contract. I am going through a lot right now. Feeling depressed,” read the post sighted by GhanaWeb on September 29.

Social media users attached little or no seriousness to Joyce’s claim of being depressed. They wrote that the two cannot be taken seriously due to their records.

  • Trigmatic wades into Kirani Ayat and GTA feud

Ghanaian musician and songwriter, Enoch Nana Yaw Oduro-Agyei, alias Trigmatic, has added his voice to growing calls for the intellectual property rights of creatives to be respected.

In a post shared on Twitter, Trigmatic lamented how creatives have serially had their intellectual property rights trampled upon.

He said it will only take prosecution of persons who disregard such rights to ensure that the narrative changes.

The artiste wants the exploitation of creatives to cease and due compensation paid appropriately.

“Regardless of what the real story is, I expect to see creatives stand behind @KiraniAYAT as this could be a good case study for many others in time past and the future. IP and it’s issues are often taken for granted this side and until people are prosecuted for such offences.

“Our crafts will continually be taken for granted. It’s one person today and could be you tomorrow. Stop exploiting talents and do the needful,” Trigmatic tweeted on September 29.

It will be recalled that Kirani Ayat called out the Ghana Tourism Authority, GTA, for using part of his video in a promotional video which was shared on the Twitter handle of President Akufo-Addo.

The GTA in response said it legitimately acquired it from an agency, later named as Samsal.

However in a sharp turn of events, Samsal denied authorizing the Authority to use the video (a mood board) which featured parts of Kirani Ayat’s video.

In a September 28, 2022 statement, the agency explained that it entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GTA to promote Digital Wrist Band – a wrist band that granted access to highly sought after events slated for the Christmas season – to tourists and foreigners.

Per the MoU, the agency said GTA was to give it the needed support in terms of finances and logistics in order to produce video content to market Ghana to the world in that regard.

Consequently, Samsal said it put together a video reel (mood board) for the GTA that included parts of Ayat’s ‘GUDA’ video to demonstrate the vision it had for videos it intended to subsequently create for the campaign.

  • Lydia Forson’s encounter with a mystery man that left her awed

Lydia Forson admits “I’m conditioned due to my bad experiences to always have my guard up when it comes to meeting people” but her encounter with an unidentified man in a shop has had an influence on her, hence, her decision to “focus on the positive until proven otherwise.”

The actress has in a series of tweets, Thursday, detailed what ensued between her and the said man, disclosing that he did not only pay for the items she bought from the shop but appreciated her activism while encouraging her to be resolute in the face of adversities.

Lydia Forson, an avid social media user who has been a staunch critic of governments and a human right advocate said although she insisted she would pay for the items, the man’s inflexible desire to take care of the bill made her give in eventually. As if that was not enough, the man, according to the actress, escorted her to her car while wheeling the cart.

Surprisingly, the man did not ask for anything in return; not even a photograph.

In her appreciation post sighted by GhanaWeb, an awestruck Lydia Forson said: “To the kind gentleman who paid for my groceries today, wheeled my cart to the car, and left without asking for anything in return, I just want to say THANK YOU. The last thing he said before leaving was ‘I just need you to know some of us see and appreciate everything you do’”.

  • Small Arms Commission begins sensitisation via SMS

The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons has embarked on a nationwide initiative to sensitise the public the dangers and other consequences of the possession of arms.

The initiative, which is through the use of Short Message Service (SMS), also aims at reaching out to the public about the dangers associated with arms ownership, their proliferation, illegal acquisition and abuse.

“This is the first time we are using SMS to reach out to our stakeholders and the general public. We are doing this because we want to use it as a medium to reach out to the public to educate and sensitise people to their responsibilities of particularly weapon owners.

“It is also to talk to potential weapon owners about the dangers associated with arms ownership, its proliferation and then its illegal acquisition and abuse, and what it can do to our economy,” a Deputy Director in charge of Programmes of the commission, Johnson Asante-Twum, told the Daily Graphic last Tuesday.

In addition, he said, the move was to remind weapon owners on their responsibility with regard to renewing their licences so that they did not become illicit in their hands.

For now the use of the SMS messages, he said, was only on Vodafone, and that the commission was in talks with the other mobile telephony service providers to use their platforms to get to subscribers on their networks.

Mr Asante-Twum said the SMS was only to complement the other sensitisation channels, including radio, television, community public education and sensitisation, town hall meetings and durbars.

“We have used other means, but we also think that this is another effective means of reaching out to people, and it is also cost effective, reaching out to people in places where we may not be even able to go to,” he said.

In relation to those who could not read and write, he said the commission had plans to talk to the network providers to use voice messages, for instance, to reach out to such people in the various languages.

“Certainly, we have not left out those who cannot read or write; we have plans to reach out them as well,” he said.

    Feedback

He said the commission had so far received positive feedback, especially from those who understood the issue of weapon proliferation and its negative effects on the society and the country at large.

“We have received a lot of feedbacks on this SMS initiative. People have been very excited about it. They are happy that we are reaching out to a lot of people through this medium.

“Then you have other people who do not have any idea about it at all and you get them calling the office line that we have put out to make enquiries,” he said.

  • Don’t abandon COVID-19 protocols : Public advised at health science conference

The fourth biennial scientific conference of the College of Health Sciences of the University of Ghana opened in Accra yesterday[September 28, 2022], with a call on Ghanaian public to adhere to the COVID-19 protocols in order not to be overtaken by events.

The Chief Executive Officer of Promasidor Ghana, Festus Tettey, who made the call, said the public appeared to have become complacent with the pandemic, and were no longer vigilant.

“A few places of business still provide hand sanitisers, while most don’t provide hand-washing logistics. Let us not become complacent in adhering to all the necessary precautions that we have learnt to follow,” he advised.

The three-day conference — attended by professionals and experts in the health sciences — was dubbed: “COVID-19 pandemic to date: the uncertain path ahead”.

Mr Tettey said it was possible to slow down and prevent the spread of the pandemic and any new diseases that the country might encounter, stressing, however, that the onus was on everyone to take personal responsibility by adhering to the protocols.

    Health system

He pointed out that COVID-19 had become a feature of the health system, and that it was important that people learnt to live with it.

“Despite the strides made globally and in the country in combating the pandemic, the path ahead is still unclear. Indeed, as recently as last month, the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned of more dangerous COVID-19 variants.

“This come on top of other viral disease outbreaks such as Monkeypox. All these facts support the assertion that the path ahead is uncertain.

Let us not be complacent in adhereing to all the necessary precautions in our everyday lives,” he added.

Mr Tettey said the outbreak of COVID-19 affected the economy, including supply chain disruptions that had led to massive costs to businesses.

    Poor vaccination

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Development of the University of Ghana, Prof. Felix Ankomah Asante, said it was serious that about 68 per cent of the country’s population were reported not to have been vaccinated against the health crisis.

He urged the conference to deliberate on why Ghanaians were behaving that way towards the vaccination, pointing out that if the country was able to achieve 100 per cent coverage immunisation of children under five in certain areas, it should be possible to achieve same for the whole population.

Prof. Asante gave the assurance that the university would continue to provide the enabling environment to conduct high quality research to address the needs of the country.

He disclosed that the university, through its office of research, innovation and development, hoped to review its current research areas towards ones that promoted innovation; re-orient its research towards addressing global challenges, and for its faculty to train the next generation of scientists and researchers.

Prof. Asante explained that malaria research would, for example, be broadened to include COVID-19 and non-communicable diseases, while considering the use of artificial intelligence in the research strategy.

The Provost of the College of Health Sciences of the University of Ghana, Prof. Julius Fobil, said conferences of the college were one of the several ways it sought to promote its research, provide services and address the health challenges of the nation and the global community.

  • World’s biggest passenger plane makes technical stopover in Kotoka

British Airways Flight A380 touched down at the Kotoka International Airport on Thursday September 29, 2022 for a technical stopover.

The British Airways ferry flight (A380) from Johannesburg enroute to London Heathrow made a technical stop at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), making this the second time an A380 aircraft has operated or landed in Accra.

The A380 is a large wide-body airliner developed and produced by Airbus.

It is the world’s largest passenger airliner and only full-length double-deck jet airliner.

The A380 has a standard seating layout for 555 passengers on two decks in a three-class configuration and needs about 3,000 m (9,800 ft) of runway to take off fully loaded.

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) announcing the technical stopover in a statement said “British Airways could not have made a better decision of choosing KIA as the preferred Airport within the sub-region for this vital technical stop.”

“KIA is centrally located in the world, on the Greenwich Meridian and close to the Equator, making it easily accessible from any part of the world.

“The Airport’s runway length of 3,400m, taxiways, and other infrastructure meets and, in some cases, exceed the standards and recommended practices of the aviation industry and is suited for the maneuverability, accessibility to the passenger boarding bridge and remote parking for the A-380.

“Indeed, the Airport has a high reputation for regulatory, safety and operational compliance in the industry,” it added.

Commercial airports are classified into 10 categories based on the largest type of aircraft they regulate.

KIA has a firefighting category of 10 and well-trained staff capable of handling the A380 aircraft.

KIA remains one of the most attractive airports in the West African region with the capacity to accommodate the largest commercial aircraft in the world.

Our long-standing experience in facilitation and cooperation between all airport stakeholders; the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Service Providers and airlines, ensures KIA’s readiness to accommodate A380 commercial operations

  • We’ll drag government to court if it fails to fight galamsey – Occupy Ghana

Pressure Group Occupy Ghana believes the main problem with illegal mining in Ghana is the government’s “sheer inability, total unpreparedness, and, or blatant unwillingness to enforce the law.”

Occupy Ghana in an open letter to President Nana Akufo-Addo said it is dumbstruck at the government’s “absolute impotence, in the face of the brazen destruction of our lands and wanton poisoning of our water bodies.”

As far as it is concerned, the government has no excuse to fail in the fight against the menace.

“Every law required to regulate the mining industry exists. Every government agency required in the police, the courts, and even the military) exists. Every district, municipality, and metropolis to enforce the law (namely the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Minerals Commission, in which Galamsey takes place has a fully-paid Chief Executive supported by an Authority and Assembly.”

“What is going on defies reason and only gives support and credence to the popular rumour or belief that the very persons who should be fighting this crime, are rather those involved in and benefit from it.”

It said the President, Nana Akufo-Addo is failing and, betraying the trust reposed in him.

“Sir, can you simply ensure that the law, namely the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), as amended, is enforced without fear and favour and irrespective of whose ox is gored?”

The pressure group vowed to pressure the President’s neck till he fulfils his promise to stop galamsey.

“We will send a reminder to you every Monday until we see firm action to stamp this crime out. If that fails, we will shame your government by going to court to compel the government to sit up and do its job. That is not a threat, sir; it is a promise,” it added.

According to him, he is convinced that the ‘galamsey’ kingpin, who was recently remanded to police custody, is not been detained by the police because he does not trust the nation’s security apparatus, 3news.com reports.

“I can tell you on authority, Aisha Huang doesn’t sleep in Police cells,” he is quoted to have said on the New Day show on TV3 Thursday, September 29.

He added that even President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo himself could not even tell if Aisha Huang was deported or not after her arrest in 2018.

“Even the president is saying that he is not sure that she was deported. So you trust our security apparatus? No,” he noted.

  • Danadams Pharmaceuticals and CEO in court over alleged fraud and forgery

The CEO of Danadams Pharmaceuticals Industry (Ghana) Limited, Dr Yaw Adu-Gyamfi, is at the Criminal Court in Accra over alleged fraud and forgery in his dealings with the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID).

The former President of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) is also set to lose his properties including the Danpong Medical Centre and Head Office of Danpong Health Group among others.

According to court documents available to Myjoyonline, Danadams is said to have taken a loan using documents the Bank describes as “forged” as a prerequisite for the facility.

Danadams Pharmaceuticals and CEO in court over alleged fraud and forgery

Loan request for anti-retroviral and anti-malaria drugs production

According to the EBID, by a Loan Agreement (No. 0078/AP/LA/BIDC/05/2013) dated 21st May 2013, it approved a loan facility of US$9,417,600.00 to Danadams for the production of anti-retroviral drugs for HIV/AIDS patients in the entire ECOWAS region.

“The loan facility was secured by two legal mortgages dated 4th August 2014, in respect of Dr Yaw Adu Gyamfi’s properties he made available to EBID for the payment of the principal amount, interest and other charges covenanted to be paid by Danadams to EBID in the event of a default on the loan facility.

“It was also secured by a legal charge created by Danadams in EBID’s favour in respect of equipment alleged by Dr Adu Gyamfi to be purchased by Danadams with the resources of the loan facility from an Indian Supplier.

According to EBID, “It was also an express term of the Loan Agreement that Danadams should open an escrow account with a reputable bank in Ghana to be funded with an amount of US$340,000.00 (representing one maturity in principal and interest) as a condition precedent for EBID’s disbursement of the first tranche of the loan in the sum of $6,020,840.00.

The Bank explained that this was “In order to induce EBID to disburse the first tranche of the loan, Dr Adu Gyamfi delivered to the Bank a letter dated 31st July 2014, purporting to emanate from the Royal Bank of Ghana, advising EBID of the opening of the escrow account and also assuring EBID that the account had been funded with the initial amount of US$340,000.00 as stipulated in the Loan Agreement. (This fraudulent letter is attached as ‘Appendix A’).”

It added, “Dr Adu Gyamfi also delivered to us a horde of official documents, including customs documents, purporting to show that Danadams had pre-financed the purchase of the equipment from the Indian company in the total sum of $6,020,840.00 through swift transfers made through Royal Bank of Ghana.”

“On the basis of the foregoing, and/or acting on the faith of these representations and induced thereby, EBID disbursed the first tranche to Danadams’ account with SG SSB Bank Ltd, Accra, the total sum of $6,020,840.00 on 14th January 2015, which Dr Adu Gyamfi acknowledged by a letter dated 15th April 2015.”

However, EBID said it later came to know that “The letter dated 31st July 2014, which Dr Adu Gyamfi presented to advise EBID about the opening of an escrow account was not issued by the Royal Bank of Ghana as he made us to believe. On the contrary, it was an elaborate forgery he created by cloning Royal Bank’s official stationary and also forging the signatures of the Bank’s officials on it.

“A supervision mission to the Royal Bank of Ghana conducted by EBID officials before disbursement of the second tranche of the facility revealed that even though the escrow account (No.1410310748215) was truly opened by Danadams with the Royal Bank, it was not funded with the sum of $340,000.00. It was during this mission that the Royal Bank delivered to EBID the actual letter they issued to Danadams which was not delivered to EBID.”

According to the Bank, “After the fraud had been detected, the Royal Bank issued a letter dated May 11, 2016, to Dr Adu-Gyamfi disassociating itself from his fraudulent activities and threatening to take legal action to purge their image.

“Swift payments delivered to EBID by Dr Adu Gyamfi as evidence of the purchase of equipment from the Indian Company were elaborate forgeries manufactured by him.”

The EBID further said, “Customs Declaration Forms delivered to EBID by Dr Adu Gyamfi as evidence of the importation of the equipment were fake or forgeries.

“Notwithstanding that he had executed or created a  legal mortgage over his properties to secure Danadam’s repayment obligations to EBID, Dr Adu Gyamfi subsequently used the same property to secure Danadam’s repayment obligations to Royal Bank under a different facility in the sum of GH¢7 million from Royal Bank.”

The Bank said Dr Yaw Adu Gyamfi diverted the proceeds of the loan to other purposes other than for the purchase of the equipment, including paying off existing liabilities he and his company owed to SG-SSB Bank and other creditors.

Royal Bank distances itself from support letter

In its defence in a court document sighted by Joy News, the third defendant (The Royal Bank) – now defunct – told the Commercial Division (6) of the High Court in Accra that, “the first defendant (Danadams Pharmaceuticals) acting by the second defendant (Dr Yaw Adu-Gyamfi) approached them for a facility to construct a facility for the production of Anti-Retroviral and Anti-malaria drugs in Ghana.”

Under the terms of the facility, Danadams was expressly required to open an escrow account with a reputable bank in Ghana to be funded with an amount of $340,000 (representing one maturity in principal and interest) as a condition precedent for EBID’s disbursement of the facility.

Danadams Pharmaceuticals and CEO in court over alleged fraud and forgery

In order to induce EBID to make disbursement of the loan, Dr Adu Gyamfi allegedly delivered to the Bank a letter dated July 31, 2014, purporting to emanate from the Royal Bank of Ghana, advising EBID of the opening of the escrow account and assuring EBID that the account had been funded with the initial amount of $340,000 as stipulated in the Loan Agreement.

According to the Royal Bank, on May 11, 2016, a delegation from EBID visited it “to enquire about the creation of an escrow account opened in the joint names of the Plaintiff and first defendant.

The Royal Bank “confirmed to the said delegation that indeed at the request of the first defendant, the escrow account has been opened but the same has not been funded. It was at this meeting that the delegation produced a letter dated July 31, 2014, allegedly coming from the third defendant and confirming that the same had been funded in the sum of $340,000.”

Danadams Pharmaceuticals and CEO in court over alleged fraud and forgery

It further told the court that “on reading the content of the said letter produced by the delegation from EBID, third defendant noticed that the said letter was completely different in form and content from the one the third defendant wrote to the first defendant in relation to the opening of the escrow account.

    “Third defendant avers that indeed the letter was produced by the delegation of EBID purporting to be coming from the third defendant in relation to the escrow account was complete forgery for the following reasons;

Danadams Pharmaceuticals and CEO in court over alleged fraud and forgery

“(a) the letterhead on which the said letter was written was a complete forgery as the same was different from the normal letterhead used by the third defendant

    (b) the letter written by the third defendant did not include the sentence “in addition, we write to confirm that an amount of  $340,000 has been deposited in the Escrow Account Number 1410310310748215

    (c) the characters in the terms of font etc are completely different from the ones written by the third defendant

    (d) the signatures of the third defendant’s Head of Business Banking and Advisory Services was obviously forged as it is completely different from that of the said official of the third defendant

    (e) the letter written by the third defendant to the first defendant was not copied to anybody but the which was produced by the delegation of EBID was actually copied to the President of the Plaintiff.

According to the Royal Bank, “they did not only deny the authorship of the said forged letter to the delegation of the plaintiff but the third defendant also wrote a letter dated 11 May 2016 seeking to know from the first defendant the source of the said letter as the same did not emanate from the third defendant. The said letter was copied to the plaintiff.

“…instead of the first defendant responding to the letter dated 11 May 2016, as aforementioned, the second defendant rather chose to respond by a WhatsApp message in which he referred to the forgery as a mistake and apologised to the third defendant for the wrongdoing.”

The Royal Bank also said apart from the WhatsApp message, “the first defendant also sent their lawyer namely Peter Dadzie” to its offices to “plead with the third defendant not to send to the Plaintiff, the Plaintiff’s copy of the letter aforementioned but this request was turned down.”

The Royal Bank, therefore, was surprised that EBID added it to the suit.

    Reaction from Danadams

In documents to the Court 2020 sighted by Myjoyonline, Dr Yaw Adu Agyei Gyamfi “pleaded not guilty to all the charges.”

“A reading of the charge sheetwill confirm that the prosecution itself concedes that the basis of this whole prosecution is a loan agreement which Danadams as a Company secured and has defaulted in paying and that EBID as a bank is only using the criminal prosecution to frustrate and tarnish the hard-earned reputation of Dr Yaw Adu Agyei Gyamfi when at all times material EBID is much aware that the issue is a civil matter.

“It is not in doubt that Danadams Pharmaceuticals Limited secured the loan facility from EBID, it is also not in doubt that there has been a default on the part of Danadams Pharmaceuticals Limited. We wish to state emphatically that Dr Yaw Adu Agyei Gyamfi is innocent of the offences he has been charged with and that his prosecution is only a carefully crafted attempt to tarnish his hard-earned reputation.”

Judicial Service writes to Police Service

On July 12, the Judicial Secretary wrote to the Director General of the Police Legal Directorate asking it to help EBID to start the attachment process as granted in a judgement by the Court.

Danadams Pharmaceuticals and CEO in court over alleged fraud and forgery

The Judicial Service explained that this was to “forestall any breach of peace that may arise, it will be greatly appreciated if you could detail armed Policemen to assist the Officers to execute the Writ.”

  • Banking sector crisis was not systemic – Alhassan Andani

Former President of the Ghana Association of Banks, Alhassan Andani, says the banking sector crisis was not systemic but rather an institutional one.

According to him, most of the top players in the banking sector had identified and taken precautionary measures against banks at risk of insolvency long before the Central Bank had raised red flags concerning those banks.

He noted that if those top banks had been unduly exposed to the defaulting banks, the collapse of the defaulting banks would have had a much more resounding effect in the country’s economy.

He stated that the Bank of Ghana should have realized earlier what was going on within the banking scene and taken appropriate measures, however, the BoG continued to provide liquidation to defaulting banks long after most banks had cut credit ties with the unhealthy banks.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express Business Edition, he explained, “Instead of the regulator … stepping in at the right time they were getting liquidity support. But typically the liquidity support from the banking sector clears within the banking sector.

“In the morning there will be a bank that has surplus cash and they know that I can’t use that there’s a bank that has cash needs so you’ll throw within a certain agreed limit and then it clears out the next day, all those are what we do.

“But when you’re cornered, you’re always out there in the market picking up someone will say ‘what’s happening to this bank?’ Then people start to withdraw their [funds]. So at the peer level, certain banks knew that other institutions within that space were not healthy enough and therefore cut off their lines of credit.

“That should have been a signal to the Central Bank. And if you go there for liquidity support number one and come back number two there’s a problem. Somebody should be sitting there helping you to balance your assets and liability.”

He believes the liquidity support should have been stopped to allow the banks go down by themselves.

“Yes, and then we would have had one institution gone and the others would be resolved, instead of trying to condone as many of them as possible then you had such a huge institutional impact. But even then, look at it, none of the top 10/12 banks were impacted because it was not systemic.

“Systemic is where you believe that this bank was healthy and everybody was dealing with them and suddenly they couldn’t meet up. Then the default of one bank will affect a healthy bank because that healthy bank had exposures to the defaulting bank. That’s systemic risk.

“But in the case of what happened in Ghana, there was very little systemic risk because we know those that were already at the bottom ready to go,” he said.

  • NIA called, begged 9 Ghanaians to come for their Ghana Cards after filing complaint in court – Sam George

Barely a week to the September 30th deadline for the re-registration of SIM cards, Ningo-Prampram MP, Sam George has alleged that the National Identification Authority (NIA) offered preferential treatment in issuing Ghana Cards to some nine Ghanaian citizens after they filed a writ against the Authority.

Sam George disclosed this in an interview on Top Story on Thursday.

According to the Deputy Ranking Member on the Communications Committee in Parliament, the NIA decided to call these persons to come for their cards because they filed a writ in court over the matter.

The MP said these Ghanaians registered for the card in 2018 and over two years have been struggling to receive their cards.

But the MP noted that the Authority after the writ had been filed, “begged” these persons to come for their cards and were met with “VIP” treatment.

“Evans, we filed a suit on Monday with nine Ghanaian citizens some who had registered for the Ghana Cards since 2018 but have not received the Ghana Card…Within 48 hours they were called by the NIA, and begged to come for their cards.

“They got to the NIA office, they were given VIP treatment, there was an NIA officer waiting to meet them at the entrance, walked them straight into an air-conditioned room, offered them water and then gave them their Ghana Cards. These are people who for two and a half years had been chasing the NIA, had been tossed left and right, some of them came from outside Accra and had to go to El-wak and Shiashie with no success,” he narrated.

Sam George emphasised that despite the preferential treatment meted out to these people, the case will proceed in court.

This, he said is because the said persons were affected by the two days’ blockage of SIM cards by the telecommunications companies.

  • “I hope to play more matches and make the Black Stars successful” – Inaki Williams

Following his Black Stars debut last week in the game against Brazil, Inaki Williams has set his sights on earning more caps and making the country successful.

The 28-year-old came off the bench in the 3-0 loss to the Selecao on Friday in Le Havre, France, to play his first game for Ghana after switching nationality.

Williams opted to play for the Black Stars after making just one appearance for Spain since 2016 despite playing for La Roja’s youth teams.

“It’s a very special feeling to play my first game with my new team-mates for my country,” Williams told BBC Sport Africa after the game against the five-time world champions.

“I was very happy to come in and make some contributions, I cannot thank the staff and squad enough for all the help.

“The hard work continues for the World Cup and hopefully I am going to enjoy the opportunity.” “I hope to play more matches and make the Black Stars successful.”

The Black Stars were non-existent in the opening half of the clash in France as Richarlison scored a brace to add to Marquinhos opener. But Ghana played quite better in the second half, which also saw the introduction of two other debutants aside Inaki – Tariq Lamptey and Mohammed Salisu.

“I think the second half saw a better performance from us,” he added. “It was not easy because it’s Brazil – a top football nation – but as Ghana we were stronger in the second half. I enjoyed myself on the pitch by helping my team.”

Prior to the game against Brazil, the new additions had an unforgettable night where they were taken through the tradition of the national team to initiate new players.

Quizzed on that, the Athletic Bilbao forward said, “I danced and sang on our initiation night.”

“It was fun and I am enjoying everything because the players have been very warm, supportive and kind to me.”

  • My husband left me for a ‘sugar mummy’ after 9 months of marriage – Woman shares experience

An avid viewer of Joy Prime, Christiana, has been left frustrated and in pain.

According to her, the husband ditched her for a ‘sugar mummy’ barely nine months after they got married.

She made this revelation to Host, KMJ on Prime Morning while discussing the impact of the church on marriages.

According to Christiana, the ‘sugar mummy’ is very rich and caters for the needs of her husband, making him abandon her.

“I’ve been married for getting to 10 months and my husband has met someone. The woman is a sugar mummy” She has money and she’s taking care of him. So he doesn’t sleep at home again,” she said.

She further indicated that “Anytime I complain, he beats me. He doesn’t feed me again, and right now I’m thinking of divorcing him. So I don’t know what to do right now.

Addressing the issue on the show, counsellor, Rev. Daniel Annan, explained that Christiana failed to marry the right man, saying he is an opportunist.

“She has married the wrong person. She married somebody who is an opportunist. He grasps every opportunity that comes,” he stated.

Rev. Daniel Annan encouraged Christiana to patiently wait and work on making the union with her husband strong instead of divorcing him.

“Divorce is not the issue right now. You need to go back and see how best you can work on it and win his heart. And if you’re able to do that, then he stays because she’s not in the man’s heart, she’s only in his mind,” he urged.

However, Rev. Daniel Annan urged married women to fit into their husbands’ ways of living, admitting that a woman’s world is different from a man’s world.

He admonished upcoming married couples to always seek their parents’ blessing before leaving home.

  • Global Citizen Festival campaign culminates in $2.4b to end extreme poverty

Global Citizen has announced the 2022 Global Citizen Festival campaign has culminated in over $2.4 billion in commitments to end extreme poverty.

The six-week campaign concluded with a nine-hour festival across two stages, beginning in Black Star Square in Accra, Ghana, presented by Harith General Partners, and ending in New York City’s Central Park, presented by Citi and Cisco.

The 2022 campaign saw two million actions taken by global citizens as part of Global Citizen’s mission to End Extreme Poverty NOW, more than doubling the record previously set by the international advocacy organization.

The fund aims to deploy $1 billion to fund projects for economic inclusion and financial participation across the continent.

  • Ghana coach Otto Addo looks to improve teenage star Abdul Fatawu Issahaku

Ghana head coach, Otto Addo is working to improve talented teenager Abdul Fatawu Issahaku.

The Sporting Lisbon attacker was invited by the Black Stars head coach for the two friendly matches in the September international break.

In the game against Nicaragua last Tuesday, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku started the game and scored with a fine effort from distance.

Speaking after the game, Ghana coach Otto Addo backed the 18-year-old to improve but advised that he should be more decisive in the final third with his shooting.

“He’s a very good winger, who shoots with power, but sometimes he needs to calm down and be more precise with the shot instead of kicking it with full power. That’s what I told you.

“You have to feel free to do those runs between the lines, go one-on-one and when you have the opportunity, use your left foot gently. If I do that, I know it will be accurate enough to score,” Coach Otto Addo said after the Nicaragua game.

Abdul Fatawu Issahaku has returned to Sporting Lisbon where he will not be aiming for more minutes in the senior national team.

  • Coolio: Michelle Pfeiffer and Snoop Dogg lead tributes to Gangsta’s Paradise rapper

Coolio recorded eight studio albums and won an American Music Award and three MTV Video Music Awards

Stars including Michelle Pfeiffer and Snoop Dogg have been paying tribute to the US rapper Coolio who has died at the age of 59.

He was found unresponsive on the bathroom floor of a friend’s LA house, his manager Jarez Posey told US media.

Coolio, whose real name is Artis Leon Ivey Jr, won a Grammy for the 1995 track Gangsta’s Paradise, which led the soundtrack for Dangerous Minds.

Pfeiffer, who starred in the movie, said she was “heartbroken” at the news.

The exact cause of his death on Wednesday has not yet been revealed.

However Mr Posey told TMZ, which first reported the news, that paramedics believed he may have had a cardiac arrest.

Pfeiffer said she thought Coolio’s track was the “reason our film saw so much success” and that she still gets “chills” whenever she hears it.

“Heartbroken to hear of the passing of the gifted artist Coolio,” she wrote on Instagram, sharing a clip from the famous music video, which sees her sitting across the table from Coolio as he raps.

“A life cut entirely too short,” she continued. “I remember him being nothing but gracious.”

Dangerous Minds saw Pfeiffer play an ex-Marine who becomes a teacher working on a pilot programme for teenagers who are bright but underachieving, in a tough, inner-city school.

Coolio’s haunting track from it, which samples the Stevie Wonder song Pastime Paradise, continues to be widely listened to and has just passed a billion streams on Spotify, according to his official website.

It begins with Coolio reciting a line from the bible – “As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death” – before spinning off into a wide-ranging rap which finds him questioning the actions of those around him and wondering if he will “live to see 24”.

The film grossed nearly £85m (£78m) worldwide and the track became the biggest-selling record of the year in the US, in 1995, and Coolio was awarded the Grammy for best rap solo performance.

Snoop Dogg shared a picture of the two posing on the set of the music video for Gangsta Walk, a track they collaborated on in 2006.

Fellow rapper and actor Ice Cube said: “This is sad news. I witness first hand this man’s grind to the top of the industry,” while Vanilla Ice tweeted: “I’m freaking out I just heard my good friend Coolio passed away,”

Rapper MC Hammer described Coolio as “one of the nicest dudes I’ve known”.

“Good people. RIP Coolio,” he wrote, sharing a black and white picture of the rapper, and later posting a second picture of the pair together, along with Tupac and Snoop Dogg.

Oscar-winning musician Questlove simply tweeted: “Peaceful Journey Brother.”

Rapper Flavor Flav said he and Coolio had been due to “perform together this Tuesday”, saying his friend was “the West Coast Flavor Flav… He loved telling everyone that.”

Singer Debbie Harry paid tribute by saying: “Rest in power”, while rapper LL Cool J wrote the same message, along with “Love & Respect”. Musician Al Yankovic posted a picture of himself with the late rapper.

Coolio started making music in the 80s, but he cemented his place in hip-hop history when he recorded Gangsta’s Paradise, which went on to become one of the most successful rap songs of all time.

A leading figure in the US West Coast rap music scene in the 90s, Coolio was born in Pennsylvania, but grew up in the LA suburb of Compton, where his career flourished.

He rejected the label gangster rapper, and instead embraced the role of an all-round entertainer.

A talented producer and actor, he appeared in dozens of films and TV shows, including Celebrity Big Brother in the UK in 2009.

And he even found an outlet for his love of food with a book and internet series, Cooking with Coolio.

Over a career spanning four decades he recorded eight studio albums and won an American Music Award and three MTV Video Music Awards.

His other hits included Fantastic Voyage, Rollin’ With My Homies, 1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin’ New), and Too Hot.

He was active right up until his death – Coolio was in the middle of a tour with other 90s stars including Vanilla Ice and Young MC, and they performed in Texas just a few days ago.

According to him, “every single day this man remains the President, the country is in peril.”

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Dr Baah said the President is incapable of running the affairs of the country that would transform the lives of its people.

“We set our system up to fail. Everything is at the pleasure of the President. So if we are not lucky and he is incapable as we’ve seen in this government this is what is going to happen.

“You advise him, but he doesn’t listen so there is nothing for you to do but to watch him. I supported him wholeheartedly now I have seen the result and I can’t say otherwise,” he stated.

Dr Baah, therefore, called for a new constitution that would reinstate checks and balances in the governance of the country.

“We need to write a new constitution, this one cannot be amended, it is broken. Write it with inbuilt checks and balances. Take some powers away from a particular arm of government,” he stated.

  • Recent frequent rainfall is not a new phenomenon – Chief Forecaster

Many Ghanaians have expressed concern about recent heavy rains in some parts of the country, but the Ghana Meteorological Agency’s Chief Forecaster says it is not a new phenomenon.

According to Fecility Ahafianyo, La Niña is a global weather phenomenon associated with wet seasons in Western and Eastern Africa.

La Niña refers to the periodic cooling of sea-surface temperatures across the east-central equatorial Pacific – an oceanic and atmospheric phenomenon, that is the colder counterpart of El Niño, as part of the broader El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) climate pattern.

La Niña weather is a pattern that occurs in the Pacific Ocean. In this pattern, strong winds blow warm water at the ocean’s surface. As the warm water moves, cold water from the deep rises to the land surface rich in moisture suitable for rain cloud formation.

“When we have a La Niña phase, we have wet conditions in most of west and east Africa,” she explained.

“According to available data,” Felicity told JoyNews Mahmud Mohammed-Nurudeen, the phenomenon is not new, but “in terms of intensity, people should be concerned.”

She stated that each rainy season has its own variations, and this is one of the 2022 anomalies.

According to the World Meteorological Organization, there have been 24 cases of La Niña since 1951, with the strongest being in 1982-83, 1997-98, and 2015 – 16.

The most recent La Niña occurred in 2020-21, and it was moderate, similar to the first incident in 1951-52.

According to Felicity, the La Niña strengthened in the middle of June and is expected to weaken in April 2023.

This means that the country is likely to experience frequent rainfall patterns during these times.

“This year, we have a good rainy season during the main cropping season, and the La Niña intensity is about 91-94%.”

However, one major challenge is that its intensity can cause flash floods, threatening farmers’ livelihoods and other activities.

Some crops that do not require a lot of rain may be harmed, according to Felicity, and “that’s what we should be looking out for during the period.”

Felicity also discussed El Nino, which caused drier weather conditions during the 2018-2019 major rainy season. Longer dry spells shortened the cropping season.

El Niño refers to above-average sea-surface temperatures that occur on a regular basis across the east-central equatorial Pacific. It represents the ENSO cycle’s warm phase.

The 1997-1998 El Niño event was followed by a prolonged La Niña phase that lasted from mid-1998 to early 2001. El Niño/La Niña events alter the likelihood of specific climate patterns around the world, but the outcomes are never identical.

She advised Ghanaians to stay up to date on GMet weather updates in order to plan their activities.

  • Arsenal must sign a new midfielder to fill in for injury-prone Thomas Partey – Gabriel Agbonlahor

Former Aston Villa captain, Gabriel Agbonlahor has shared that he has no doubt Arsenal needs a new midfielder.

According to him, there must be another top midfielder in the Arsenal squad to fill in for injury-prone Thomas Partey.

“Arsenal might look in January and think, ‘You know what, we are third in the league, we are second in the league, we have got a really good chance this season of finishing in the top four.’ And they will have to go out and get one. Their fans were very upset when the window closed and they didn’t get one.

“Thomas Partey is always going to be injured. He’s very injury prone. [Granit] Xhaka’s been outstanding, [Albert Sambi] Lokonga is still up and coming but they need one more,” the former Villa captain told Football Insider.

Gabriel Agbonlahor continued, “It was strange that they did not fill that position. Especially when they know, Thomas Partey is not going to play a lot of games this season because he is always injured. They need to definitely get one during the January window.”

While on the international break with Ghana, Thomas Partey had to return to England early to be assessed by Arsenal after he felt pain.

He is now a doubt for Arsenal’s upcoming match against Spurs.

  • There’s no court injunction on Wilson Gbli Nartey’s funeral — Family

The family of the renowned businessman and stateman, Wilson Gbli Nartey aka W. G. Nartey, has denied knowledge of any court injunction prohibiting them from organizing a befitting memorial and thanksgiving service to celebrate the life of their late father.

The family has therefore assured the general public that the memorial and thanksgiving service for the late W. G. Nartey is on schedule and currently ongoing. It added that the funeral will be climaxed on Saturday October 1, 2022.

The Family Head of the Nartey family, Numo Kabutey Nartey, explained in a statement that it has come to the notice of the family elders and children of Mr. W. G. Nartey that a certain Christopher Nartey has put out a notice and audio in the media that he has obtained an injunction to halt the “final funeral rite” of the late Mr. W.G. Nartey who died in 2019 and was buried shortly after.

According to him, the purported press release and public announcement of September 28, 2022 was not authored by the Nartey Family nor the elders of the family.

He noted that the promoter of the fake injunction, Christopher Nartey, is an imposter and does not have the authority nor the consent of the above esteemed groups to make any announcement on their behalf.

“This announcement must be treated with the utmost disgust and disdain as it is calculated to bring dishonour and disrepute to the honour and dignity of our father. Christopher Nartey is not a son of W. G. Nartey, as a son will never disgrace his father in public nor the hand that has fed him in his nurturing years.

“The Acting President of the Great Ningo Traditional Council; the Chiefs and the Paramount Chief of Ada and other well-meaning illustrious sons and daughters of Great Ningo, the diaspora and Ghana have supported the family and is organizing this Memorial and Thanksgiving Service with us. They have been present at our meetings and would never go against our concerted efforts as to give authority to such a bogus statement,” Numo Kabutey Nartey assured.

“We cannot fathom what agenda or purpose this vendetta against our father is calculated to achieve. What did WG. Nartey do to him so bad that Christopher cannot allow him to rest in perfect peace?”, he asked.

The spokesperson explains that as far as he is aware a case has been filed at the court and the purported date for the hearing is 10th October 2022. “So ostensibly an application is yet to be heard!”

He added, “Furthermore, if an application is yet to be heard, there cannot be at the same time a judgement that an injunction has been purportedly granted or obtained. Simply put, there is no order of a grant of injunction by any court. “There is no document of a grant of Injunction!

“This information being put out by Christopher that a purported Injunction has been granted to stop us giving thanks in memory of our father is a dastardly act calculated to throw dust into people’s eyes and create uncertainty.

“Our Memorial and Thanksgiving Service which is to Thank the Good Lord for the Life of our father is not a funeral but a gathering of the family and our friends to pray for and honour the memory of our father simpliciter.”

He noted that unfortunately for Christopher the celebration has already started since Monday and it will continue till next week.

“My father died three years ago on 2nd September 2019. Due to the onset of COVID, we gave him a quiet private burial. So, he is already buried. We are holding this Thanksgiving and Memorial to bring closure.

“We, the Great Ningo Traditional Council, The Paramount chief of Great Ningo, the entire W. G. Nartey family and diaspora, the legal representation/estate of Mr. W. G. Nartey and the people of Great Ningo wish to remind all well-wishers, friends, dignitaries, invited guests and intended attendees that the planned W. G. Nartey’s Life Celebration at Great Ningo for the duration, Sept 26th through to October 4th is definitely on track,” he assured.

All arrangements, program schedule and order of services for a befitting event is coming on as originally planned.

    W. G. Nartey, the most honored Statesman of Great Ningo has lived a full life. His relentless efforts to assist mankind is very appreciated by all. He was a businessman and owner of Modern Ghana Builders.

  • World Heart Day: Experts identify significant gaps in awareness, diagnosis and prevention of heart failure

Urgent action is needed to stop and reverse the steep rise in heart failure happening across the Middle East and Africa (MEA).

This was the warning issued by a group of regional experts, who collectively outlined the primary gaps in awareness, diagnosis and prevention of heart failure in the region and agreed on a set of recommendations for policymakers to take forward.

Their conclusions have been published in the Journal of the Saudi Heart Association.

The paper highlights that heart failure is associated with significant morbidity and mortality and considerably impacts patients’ quality of life, as well as incurring a substantial economic burden, with a total estimated cost of $1.92 billion.

It notes that the average age a person will develop heart failure in the MEA region is significantly lower than elsewhere: Africa (53 years), Middle East (56.4 years), North Africa (58.79 years), Asia (60 years) and Europe (70 years).

The experts point to risk factors such as diabetes, obesity, smoking and socioeconomic transition, marked by a sedentary lifestyle, lack of physical activity and high consumption of fatty foods, as the main contributors to the higher prevalence of heart failure in the region.

They also agreed that, in certain countries, high prevalence of existing infectious diseases such as tuberculosis shifts the focus and resources from non-communicable diseases like heart failure.

To mark World Heart Day 2022, the paper’s lead authors have today reiterated their recommendations and stressed the ongoing, wide gaps and unmet needs in awareness, prevention, and diagnosis of heart failures in countries across the Middle East and Africa.

“Heart failure is a serious and growing threat to health in the Middle East and Africa, but it does not have to be this way. Policymakers across the region must act now to prioritise heart failure and associated diseases, through better training for health workers, national registries to ensure the collection of quality data and improved access to novel therapies,” said Dr. Ahmed Bennis, Professor of Cardiology, Department of Cardiology in Casablanca, Morocco.

“Whilst local guidelines are available in South Africa (click), too many lives are being cut short in this part of the world due to gaps in how we identify and treat heart failure. This problem also places a huge economic burden on already over-stretched health systems. This paper clearly lays out what needs to be done to avert further suffering. In honour of World Heart Day, we are calling on policymakers to turn words into action,” said Dr. Eric Klug, Professor of Cardiology at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.

“For the first time, experts from across the Middle East and Africa have published a set of region-specific measures to tackle heart failure in efforts to save lives and livelihoods. AstraZeneca is committed to playing our part and supporting health authorities to turn these recommendations into concrete actions,” said Dr. Viraj Rajadhyaksha, Area Medical Director for Middle East and Africa, AstraZeneca.

The paper points to the lack of community-level awareness and a high prevalence of associated conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, compounded by poor accessibility and affordability of healthcare, as major barriers to the prevention of heart failure in the region. It urges policymakers to take the following steps to reverse current trajectories:

    • Prioritise heart failure and its associated comorbidities alongside other infectious diseases
    • Develop and implement region-specific clinical guidelines on heart failure
    • Create local data registries on heart failure
    • Train health workers in early identification of high-risk patients
    • Improve access to advanced diagnostics and train primary care health workers to use the available technology
    • Enhance access and insurance for novel therapies

In relation to those who could not read and write, he said the commission had plans to talk to the network providers to use voice messages, for instance, to reach out to such people in various languages.

“Certainly, we have not left out those who cannot read or write; we have plans to reach out them as well,” he said.

    Feedback

He said the commission had so far received positive feedback, especially from those who understood the issue of weapon proliferation and its negative effects on society and the country at large.

“We have received a lot of feedbacks on this SMS initiative. People have been very excited about it. They are happy that we are reaching out to a lot of people through this medium.

“Then you have other people who do not have any idea about it at all and you get them calling the office line that we have put out to make enquiries,” he said.
