  • Let’s expose illegal miners; galamsey is a threat to our survival – GMA to Ghanaians

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has called on all Ghanaians to join hands and expose individuals and organisations involved in the destruction of lands and water bodies through galamsey as it has dire effect on the health of the nation.

The Association said despite several warnings of the health implication of galamsey on Ghanaians, the destruction of land and water bodies continue unabated.

The GMA is, therefore, urging the courts to expedite the trails and punish galamseyers who they referred to as “saboteurs” without mercy when they are brought before them.

They also called on President Akufo-Addo to take the necessary and urgent action to reverse this menace which they said is threatening the future and very survival of the country.

  • Accept born-again secular acts —Chemphe

It takes self-discipline for a born-again secular artiste to switch camp to become a Gospel musician and Afrobeats act Chemphe shares this sentiment.

So, when the new found family treat such artistes with contempt and they feel they don’t belong, it is very easy for them to backslide and quickly go back to their old lifestyle.

But Chemphe, a born-again secular musician, is urging the Gospel fraternity to embrace and help them integrate into their fold.

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, Chemphe, whose real name Henry Agyekum said, most times, secular musicians who find Christ beat a retreat because they do not feel welcomed.

“The fact that you are not accepted as a gospel musician because you were not originally one of them is enough to make you return to the world. When you don’t get shows to play at churches or gospel related events, and you have bills to pay, the probability of you going back to secular is very high.

“I know some musicians who are going through such challenges because our gospel colleagues who are supposed to show them the way and take them in are not doing so. It is about time Gospel musicians show love to such secular musicians who have found Christ and have decided to live their lives for Him.

“In my case, apart from fully preparing myself to serve the Lord no matter what, I was fortunate to know a lot of Gospel musicians who were already my friends. The likes of KODA, Akesse Brempong and Joel Mettle were very supportive when I decided to go gospel,” he said.

Asked what will make him go back to the world after almost a decade of giving his life to Christ, Chemphe said he does not see that happening.

“Nothing will make me go back to the world because I know where I am heading. I don’t look at what people say about me but the message God has for me. It might be tough at the beginning but the end is always the best. It is a great feeling to have that good relationship with God,” he revealed.

Talking about having collaborations with secular artistes, Chemphe, who has released gospel songs like Medo Yesu, Freedom and Conqueror, said he does not have any problem with that.

“I know most of these secular artistes who are very good Christians. The fact that they sing secular songs does not mean they are bad people. But before I feature on a song, I must first listen to it and decide whether or not to be part of it,” he said.

Before giving his life to Christ, Chemphe, who is currently a pastor and worships with Empowerment Worship Centre, had songs like Number One, Why You Dey Treat Am Bad and Left Over.

  • Man arrested for threatening to release nude videos of late brother’s wife

A 30-year-old man has been arrested after threatening to release nude videos of his late brother’s wife.

Michael Agyei made the threat on live radio when he appeared on the Obra Show on Nhyira FM.

Grace Manu, 37 years, filed a complaint against Michael, the younger brother of her late husband, accusing him of failing to honour the payment of some GHc7,500 he borrowed from her.

Grace says she had a brief intimate relationship with Michael after the demise of her husband.

The relationship, according to her, was validated by custom which allows a widow to marry the brother-in-law. But their relationship turned sour due to misunderstandings, especially conflicts over money.

Both Grace and Michael appeared on the Obra Show to seek arbitration. In the adjudication process, Michael accused Grace of issuing death threats over the money he owed her.

He then revealed to have in his possession nude videos of Grace Manu which he threatened to release if he was harmed.

“I have so many videos of Grace and if she keeps issuing death threats with curses against me about the money, I will release all the videos,” he stated.

The KNUST Police had to be called in to arrest Michael over his threats. He is under interrogation at the police station for the retrieval of the nude videos.

  • Let’s reignite our love for God —Michael Danso

Gospel artiste, Michael Danso is certain the growing lawlessness in the society is a reflection of lack of love and affection for God and humanity.

The world and particularly Christians, were failing to abide by their religious doctrines and teachings of “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength and to love your neighbour as yourself”.

Michael told Graphic Showbiz that he has been inspired to correct the bad narrative with his upcoming song, Odo scheduled for release on Saturday, October 15.

He stated that the new song is a call to reignite our love for God and humanity since they were essential requirements for the sustenance of the world.

“It is for this reason that God has blessed me with a timely, concise, and accurate message in my new single titled Odo (Love). In Revelation 2:5, Jesus told the church of Ephesus, ‘Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.’

“This shows that loving God is total submission to His word and ways. The lack of this love however doesn’t mean that there is no relationship with God. It only means that humans have to change their ways and that is why I’m entreating people to return to their first love with Odo,” he said.

A graduate of Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), Michael Danso is a trained journalist and Public Relations Officer. However, his professional schedules have not hindered his commitments to using music to cause the change he wants to see.

He has a number of songs such as He Never Fails featuring Joe Mettle, Divine Favour, Aseda, Dance of Love and Beko Ma Me. Michael is very hopeful that Odo will equally bring transformation to listeners.

“It is a scary reality that many people have departed from their first love and allowed other things to take over their lives. I’m therefore appealing to patrons to stream and download the song across the digital music platforms when it is released and let the message ring stronger in their hearts than lyrics and beat composition,” he stated.

A 48-year-old man has been arrested in connection to the incident. Police are said to have recovered about 50 litres of the alcohol at his store.

Selling alcohol to Muslims is forbidden in Morocco, but it is often discreetly sold in restaurants and stores.

  • Creatives are taken for granted -Sarkodie

Multiple award winning rapper Sarkodie is not excited that people in authority use the works of creatives yet the sector continues to lack support.

In a series of tweets yesterday, September 28 to lend his support to fellow artiste, Kirani Ayat who called out the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) for using his works to promote domestic tourism without his permission, the Adonai hitmaker said such happenings were forcing creatives to give up their dreams.

“A lot of creatives giving up on their dreams due to the system out here, it’s either you wanna join the mediocre or you quit (if you wanna do something epic) because it’s no joke… we talking serious money…

“We (creatives) do a lot to put our country out there attracting a lot of tourists and investors that translates to money to help nation building yet that’s one sector with no support. I feel my brother and support him especially if he actually reached out and didn’t get help,” he tweeted.

    Background

Ayat first raised concerns about the use of his Guda music video when it was shared by the Twitter handle of President Nana Akufo-Addo on Tuesday, September 27.

According to him, he reached out to the Ministry of Tourism for support before shooting the said music video but he was turned down.

The video was shot in northern Ghana and features the local culture.

On Tuesday Ayat tweeted: “The President of Ghana has used my video ‘Guda’ in this ad to promote Ghana. I was actively reaching out to the Ministry of Tourism in 2018/19 to use this video to push tourism in the North and got no reply, yet today it’s in an ad and no one reached out to me for permission”.

Responding to the musician’s concerns in a statement yesterday, the GTA said the footage was acquired legitimately from a creative agency in 2019.

However, the GTA said it had contacted the agency to deal with the matter.

“This video has thus been played locally and internationally without any issue. The content was used in accordance with the terms agreed with the agency and not as being alleged,” the GTA said.

In a response to the GTA’s statement, Kirani Ayat in a statement said no agency had any rights to his “intellectual property”.

He also urged the GTA to name and direct the agency to produce documents to show that he had an agreement with them.

The issue has sparked interest from players in the entertainment industry and beyond, with many launching a ‘Compensate Ayat’ social media campaign.

Musician Pure Akan also showed his support by tweeting: “Compensate Ayat”.

  • CLOGSAG accuse politicians of being behind ghost names on payroll

Civil and Local Government Staff Association Ghana (CLOGSAG) is accusing political actors of being behind the increasing number of ghost names on the public payroll.

The Association explains that the interference from political cohorts within government in the running of the Civil Service is one of the major contributory factors to the worrying situation.

Speaking at the 5th Nathan Annang Quao Lectures on the theme “Abuse of political power in the Ghanaian Civil Service: the bane of National Development,” the Executive Secretary of the Association, Dr. Isaac Bampoe Addo called on the government to wean itself from the activities of the service.

“Our evidence reveals that the so-called ghost names that cannot be identified in the civil service payroll have turned out to be personal assistants of politicians,” Dr. Bampoe said.

He complained further that “permanent consultancies for key functions of the services have been outsourced to party apparatchiks and consultants.”

“This has compromised the quality of services provided by most civil servant organisations,” Dr. Bampoe said.

He also noted that capacity building opportunities have also been “hijacked by politicians”.

“The ones they are not able to hijack are sabotaged to the disadvantage of the nation.”

  • Coach Otto Addo unperturbed by Black Stars form ahead of World Cup

Otto Addo, the coach of Ghana, is unconcerned with the Black Stars’ performance before the World Cup in Qatar.

The Black Stars are participating in the world championship after being absent in Russia in 2018.

Otto Addo has led the national team to the 2022 World Cup, although in his eight games since taking over, he has only won two of them. His first two games were against Nigeria.

Because both contests were tied, Ghana was guaranteed a spot in the tournament in Qatar based on away goals.

Since then, Ghana have only beaten Madagascar once, a 3-0 victory in Cape Coast in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, and Tuesday’s 1-0 victory over Nicaragua.

The run has included defeats to Japan (4-1) and Brazil (3-0), as well as draws with the Central African Republic (1-1) and Chile (0-0).

“We are using these matches to try a lot of things, not only on the players but also for my side on systems, so we have to find that together. This is very important for us as a team.

“We have new players in each position we need to integrate and a whole a lot of things and we also want to use these games for everyone to show themselves at the training and also in the games and I am not worried.

“We have to take the right conclusions out of every match and prepare ourselves for the World Cup.”

Laryea Kingston, a former Ghanaian great, claims he won’t be surprised if Inaki Williams is the primary Black Stars attacker in the FIFA World Cup in 2022.

He claims that the player has proven his abilities and will likely be chosen over the competition given his expertise.

Laryea Kingston said of Inaki Williams, “I see him as someone that is going to lead our striking position in the tournament because of the experience and what I have seen about him as a technical guy,” in an interview with Radio Gold Talk Sport.

The retired footballer who is now a coach added that he was impressed with the performance of Inaki Williams in the two friendly matches played in the past week against Brazil and Nicaragua.

“Inaki Williams did not get enough balls but he did the right thing against Nicaragua,” Laryea Kingston said.

Inaki Williams will have another chance to show what he can do in November when Ghana takes on Switzerland in a final pre-world cup friendly match.

  • Afriyie Barnieh, Afena-Gyan not Black Stars standard – Dan Owusu

Legendary Ghanaian forward Dan Owusu has questioned Felix Afena-Gyan and Daniel Afriyie Barnieh’s talents for the Black Stars.

The two joined the Black Stars in preparation for friendly against Nicaragua and Brazil.
Ghana lost to the South American powerhouses 3-0 but bounced back to upset Nicaragua 1-0.

Afriyie Barnieh made a cameo appearance in the tight victory against Nicaragua on Tuesday, while Afena-Gyan, who plays for the Italian team Cremonese, appeared in the Black Stars’ loss to Brazil.

In an interview with Koforidua-based Bryt FM, Dan Owusu, who won the Ghana Premier League goal king gong for three consecutive times emphasized both Barnieh and Afena-Gyan are not up to the national team standard.

“I joined the Black Stars as a young player but I didn’t get playing time because there were senior players. When they faded out, we succeeded them, and that is how national team should be”

“Afriyie is doing well but I think this is not the time to play him at the Black Stars. He is very smallish and players like that normally struggle. To me, it is about being with the team for long and knowing the philosophy”

“Both Barnieh and Afena-Gyan are not up to the national team level. I think they should just under study the senior players and I believe with time, they will get there”

  • It is an honour – Nico Williams on playing for Spain

After choosing Spain over Ghana, Athletic Club striker Nico Williams says he is honored to play for his country.

In just his second game with the Spanish national team, Nico Williams was pivotal in guiding Spain to a repeat of the League of Nations “final four,” and the young Athletic winger has already cemented his place as a top contender to travel to Qatar for the World Cup.

Spain defeated Portugal 1-0 in Braga to progress to the Nations League quarterfinals, and the 20-year-old player provided an assist for Alvaro Morata’s game-winning goal.

“For me, it is an honour to be here. Helping the team and being here is a dream for me. Morata has told me that the goal is mine, but I have seen him there alone and I have thought of passing it to him, “said Nico.

When Nico Williams was asked if the responsibility weighed on him, he replied forcefully: “I think I’m doing well. Little by little I am growing as a player and as a person. He also revealed what the coach had demanded of him: “Luis Enrique has told me to be brave, to face up, to be myself, and that’s how it has been.”

His wish now is to represent Spain in the World Cup, but he acknowledged that it does not depend only on him. “To go to the World Cup, it’s the coach’s decision, but hopefully I can be there,” said Nico Williams, praised by Luis Enrique and all his teammates.

“Nico, in his second game, has been key with Carvajal’s pass to the centre. I only had to push her,” said Álvaro Morata. When we have to give the size, we give it. We are a good group and we deserve it. It has been a difficult game. I stay with the attitude of this team”.

“There is a probability that the IMF will be swapping those Eurobonds due with the $3 billion facility to be given to Ghana to pay them off anytime they are due. This action of IMF will reduce the interest payment on Ghana’s Eurobonds and provide liquidity to support our balance of payment”.

“The conditionality in a way is to provide debt sustainability, and therefore payment in arrears to credit suppliers, statutory payments may be asked to take a ‘haircut’. Then local banks who have funded these credit suppliers by Ghana government will have to impair these loans example road contractors, power providers etc. Then BoG may be asked to give liquidity support to these banks, especially banks that do not have the capitalisation to absorb the losses”.

IMF to compel government to cut expenditures

Dr. Peprah also pointed out that the government will be compelled by the IMF to cut expenditures.

He also mentioned that the Fund support will be used to pay off some of the credit suppliers who may accept the haircut or discount their bills to the government”.

“The IMF support will also be used to pay off some of the credit suppliers who may accept the haircut or discount their bills to the government. This will be done with the aim of preventing government to go and borrow to pay them off”.

“Through government’s legal power and with the cooperation, collaboration and consultation with Parliament some payments which are in arrears may be stopped”, he added.

Ghana has $7.3 billion in principal repayments due on outstanding Eurobonds by 2032, according to Moody’s.

  • Meet lady who sells fuel in gallons to survive, makes GH¢3 per gallon

Motorbike owners who run out of petrol while at the mechanic shop can purchase fuel from Millicent Aheto.
About a month after her previous job closed, she started this business.

Speaking on Daily Hustle, Millicent claimed that she worked at a Chinese Restaurant till it closed down weeks ago.
She made the decision to put the money she had saved into the fuel business in order to make some money.

“At the Chinese restaurant, I was paid GHS300, but they eventually raised it to GHS700 before it fell apart.
I explored other positions, but they all claimed that the company wasn’t expanding sufficiently to hire more people.

I didn’t want to be idle, so I discussed it with the guys at the shop, and they encouraged me to do it. I realised that when the motorbikes come here, they run out of fuel,” she said.

Speaking on the risks involved in selling fuel outside of a designated station, Millicent mentioned that “it’s not easy, but I have no choice. And they also need it.”

Moreover, Milicent shared her profit margin with SVTV Africa’s DJ Nyaami. According to Millicent, she buys a gallon for GHS46 and makes GHS3 after every purchase.

So far, the highest profit Millicent has made is Ghs20, but she is hopeful for the future. She added that the little she makes is better than selling her body for money.

  • Financial institutions urged to develop gender-tailored SME solutions

In order to promote greater financial inclusion for women, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has urged financial service providers to review and create new financial solutions and models that specifically benefit women-owned businesses.

This is against the idea that prioritising SME development, especially among women, is vital for ensuring inclusive economic growth.

Ismail Adam, the Bank of Ghana’s Deputy Director of Banking Supervision, asserts that SMEs are essential for sustaining economies all over the world and fostering economic progress.

He observed that in most developing economies SMEs form the bedrock of socio-economic development, contributing significantly to GDP, job-creation and improved livelihoods. For instance, in Ghana SMEs form about 92 percent of all registered businesses, and thus are seen as the driving force behind any resilient national economy, he added.

However, despite the contribution of SMEs to economic development, he noted that their access to finance remains a key constraint.

Aside from the financing gap, he said: “SMEs, particularly women-led SMEs, face several additional challenges to start and build a business – including unwritten social and cultural norms, lack of awareness about legal rights, lack of economic and training opportunities among other constraints”.

Given this development, the Deputy Director asserted that effective policies which facilitate access to credit for women-owned/led enterprises require a clear understanding of these constraints for them to work effectively.

Mr. Adam was speaking at a project learning conference organised by Sinapi Aba Savings and Loans Trust, and encouraged stakeholder engagements on addressing the challenges of women-led SMEs in order to consider all the key factors and make inroads.

The project learning conference was on implementation of the ‘Financial Inclusion for Enterprise Development (FINEDEV)’ programme for women by Sinapi Aba and its partners – Global Affairs Canada and Opportunity International Canada (OIC).

He said while the BoG’s mandate generally focuses on price as well as financial stability, it has also made room for financial innovation and inclusion.

“Regulatory frameworks, when carefully designed, can promote financial stability on one hand, while ensuring that businesses, households and individuals at the lower end of the market gain access to critical financial services and products through financial innovation.

“One of the means through which the Bank of Ghana has used regulation to promote financial inclusion and innovation in Ghana was opening-up the electronic money space to non-banks and FinTech partnering banks,” he said.

This, he noted, has led to increased access to financial services and products for previously underserved groups, especially women.

The Chief Executive of Sinapi Aba, Tony Fosu, said FINEDEV focuses on supporting some selected women – initially 18,000 – who operate micro-small businesses to grow their business to SME-level.

As part of the programme, he said, they are provided with financial services and taken through mentorship programmes, among others, to achieve ultimate business transformation while impacting their households and societies.

He indicated that the five-year project is anticipated to impact over 200,000 women-led SMEs in the next 10 ten years.

The Chief Executive of Opportunity International-Canada, Dan Murray, acknowledged that FINEDEV is also supported by Global Affairs-Canada, and notes that the programme has created a pathway out of poverty for beneficiaries.

“It touches us to see the direct impact in the lives of clients who have found sustainable pathways out of poverty. The ultimate goal is that clients acquire sustainable livelihoods so they can provide a brighter future for their families, and take the next step of creating jobs for others to benefit,” he said.

  • Delay tops Twitter trends as old tweets resurface

A couple of old posts shared by Media personality Deloris Frimpong Manso, popularly known as Delay, sometime in 2012/2013 have resurfaced on present-day Twitter.

The tweets were spotted on the internet shortly after Delay ‘clap backed’ at KiDi for denigrating her sometime in 2013.

KiDi was the first to experience the digging out of old tweets by a group of ‘Agenda boys’ on the microblogging site.

Old disparaging posts of the musician before becoming famous popped up on Twitter and Delay was captured as one of the victims.

In that particular post, KiDi labeled Delay an illiterate.

    “I think Delay is an illiterate..shrugs,” KiDi’s post dated June 30, 2012.

    An unhappy Delay responded to KiDi’s old tweet saying;

“Illiteracy is not a crime. I guess the end justifies the means after all. I made it in life so that’s what matters! Click on the link below ???????? to watch my interview with Kidi!”

Not long after, Delay’s old posts have been splashed all over Twitter

  • GFA suspends AshantiGold for dealing with banned officials

The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has suspended AshantiGold Sporting Club with immediate effect under Article 17(1) of the GFA Statutes.

This decision was taken due to the club’s continuous dealing with banned officials Kwaku Frimpong and Emmanuel Frimpong, which constitutes a serious violation of both GFA Statutes and the FIFA Statutes.

Kwaku Frimpong and Emmanuel Frimpong have been banned by the GFA Disciplinary Committee for 10 years and 8 years respectively for engaging in Match manipulations.

The decisions were subsequently upheld by the GFA Appeals Committee.

The two banned officials did not appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) as required by both the GFA Statutes and the FIFA Statutes and the time for filing such an appeal had long expired.

“However, AshantiGold SC continues to deal with and engage with the two banned officials in violation of Articles 9. 13 and 16 of the GFA Statutes and the relevant provisions of the FIFA Statutes,” the GFA said in a statement.

It would be recalled that only 22 players have filled appeals and temporary measures (a stay of execution) at CAS, which have been granted by CAS.

The GFA has allowed the players to register and play in GFA and international competitions until the final determination of their cases by CAS.

The suspension of AshantiGold SC means the club shall lose all membership rights and that the club cannot play in any football competition, including but not limited to the Ashanti Regional Football Association Division Two League.

In accordance with of both the GFA Statutes and FIFA Statutes, the GFA, members of the GFA clubs, players, referees and all participants in football shall not deal and engage in any football-related activities (administrative, sporting, etc) with the suspended AshantiGold SC and/or the banned officials.

Afrobeats and Highlife singer, KiDi, has once again had to apologize to the general public especially personalities whom he insulted and passed negative comments about in tweets that date back to 2012.

In the last 24 hours, the singer has dominated entertainment shows in Ghana, made headlines and also topped Twitter trends after his damning old tweets once again resurfaced.

Wednesday, September 28, was supposed to be one of KiDi’s biggest days on the calendar with the release of his latest EP titled 4Play.

It was however marred with the tweets that saw him attack personalities including Delay, Sarkodie, Yvonne Nelson, Nana Akufo-Addo among several others.

It would be recalled that KiDi in 2020 had to tow the same lane when these old tweets came to haunt him. This is not the first time social media users have dug up the famous singer’s tweets.

In the latest apology sighted by GhanaWeb on Thursday, September 29, the ‘Touch It’ hitmaker expressed remorse while pleading for forgiveness from his victims

“Years ago, when I was young and ignorant and didn’t understand the implications and consequences of my words, / tweeted things that were inappropriate and unkind. As I matured, I came to be extremely regretful of these actions and how they affected the parties involved. I want to apologise again to everyone for the statements I made, and use this to remind us all to be mindful of the things we say and how they affect people. Let’s be Kind to each other.”

  • Review fiscal regime for critical minerals – GHEITI

In the process of energy transition, it has become imperative for government to review the underlying fiscal regime for critical (transition) minerals as the country is endowed with several mineral resources: including manganese, bauxite/aluminium, iron ore, silica, graphite and lithium.

The energy transition, which is a pathway toward transforming the global energy sector to net-zero by 2050 and beyond, represents one of the most viable ways to mitigate the impacts of human-induced climate change.

According to the Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative – GHEITI, there are several elements of the prevailing mineral fiscal regime which are inflexible and could hinder capturing enough value for the country.

“There should be a review of the existing legal and regulatory regime guiding the mining sub-sector, emphasising critical minerals. This includes a discussion on how emerging fiscal and legal regimes reflect recent and future developments in the mining sector of other jurisdictions in light of the energy transition,” the report partly reads.

Ghana has the second-largest reserves of bauxite deposits in Africa besides Guinea, and together, these account for 32 percent of the world’s proven reserves. Ghana has also found significant commercial quantities of iron ore and lithium resources in recent times. It is looking forward to leveraging these resources to anchor a new resource-based industrialisation drive.

While the country seeks to lure global giants such as Tesla and other car manufacturers into setting up a base in the country, translating these old and newfound mineral resources into inclusive growth and development requires addressing important governance and value chain risks.

Government is thereby advised to consider whether the level of government equity at 10 percent is adequate in capturing potential value in the sector, and balancing this with attracting investment.

“Government could, after careful consideration, get the MIIF [Mineral Income and Investment Fund] to own extra participating (paid) interest in proven critical minerals deposits (as is done with petroleum via GNPC Explorco),” it suggested.

This calls for a review of the MII role in the mining value chain, where it could be a vehicle to own processing infrastructure and retain more of the value chain.

This could be done on a joint-venture basis to reduce the project risks, while companies that set up processing infrastructure could be offered additional tax incentives, GHEITI proposed.

“In reforming MIIF to play a more strategic interventionist role in Ghana’s critical minerals supply chain, strong corporate governance is required to minimise agency costs and pecuniary interests to reduce insider dealings and corruption. Valuable lessons on value creation from Zambia’s ZCCM-IH, Chile’s CODELCO and Norway’s SDFI (for oil and gas) can be learned. More state participation will need to be accompanied by strong anti-corruption safeguards,” it stated.

GHEITI again called on government to consider whether tax and other incentives will be appropriate to attract investment, as there is a need to implement the ring-fence regime to curtail gold-plating which deliberately reduces cost.

“Strong cost control is fundamental to the ability to collect taxes on income, such as corporate income tax and windfall taxes. The state can also consider introducing a windfall tax at the mine level. However, these need to be tied to mine profitability and can be calculated on a pre-or post-tax basis,” it said.

  • Don’t be swayed by unjustified criticisms – Chief Justice inspires judges

The Chief Justice, Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah, has urged judges not to be swayed by unjustified criticisms in the discharge of their duties.

Rather, he stressed the need for judges to be firm, resolute and uphold the rule of law at all times.

Speaking at the annual general meeting (AGM) of the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana (AMJG) in Accra yesterday, Justice Anin Yeboah said the judiciary was not above criticism, and in fact needed criticism to develop but what was required was fair and constructive criticisms.

“We cannot forbid people from expressing their sentiments in the public space but unsubstantiated allegations against judges, physical and verbal threats and attacks on judges are tantamount to perverting the course of justice,” he said.

    Be bold

Some decisions of the courts, the Chief Justice said, had led to certain criticisms based on misinterpretation and misunderstanding of those decisions in an effort to put pressure on the judiciary.

Nevertheless, he urged judges not to be perturbed and rather continue to stick to the tenets of the law.

“The misinterpretation and misunderstanding of court decisions, regardless of the motives with which they are done and the pressures they exert on you should not cause you to waiver in your fidelity to the law.

“Yours is to dispense justice and uphold the rule of law irrespective of public drama. As judges and magistrates, you must always withstand such pressures, as anything contrary to that will be a departure from the rule of law,” he said.

    Context

Justice Anin Yeboah’s comments come on the back of recent public debate on judicial independence and accusations from former President John Dramani Mahama to the effect that the independence of the judiciary had been compromised.

The assertions by Mr Mahama were condemned by the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, who described them as baseless and unacceptable from a person who once occupied the highest office of the land.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo also waded into the conversation and urged the general public to resist persons who disparaged the judiciary for their parochial and political interests.

    AGM

The 41st AGM of the AMJG which was on the theme, “Maintaining the Integrity of the judiciary amidst challenges of democratic rights and freedoms”, attracted active and retired judges and magistrates from all over the country.

The annual event is used to discuss matters pertaining to the welfare of judges and magistrates and the judiciary at large, award some distinguished judges, and also elect new executive for the association.

In attendance was a Deputy Attorney–General, Alfred Tuah-Yeboah; the Director of the Ghana School of Law, Yaw Oppong; the President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Yaw Boafo, and the President of the Judicial Service Staff Association (JUSAG), Samuel Afotey Otu.

    Development

On development of the judiciary, the Chief Justice assured the judges that many infrastructural projects to improve justice delivery were at various stages of completion.

For instance, he said a housing complex for Justices of the Court of Appeal in Kumasi and 60 other houses for judges throughout the country had been completed and would be inaugurated next month, while 100 new court buildings all over the country were also on course.

“Preparations are also underway for the commencement of the Cape Coast High Court complex, while that of the Wa Court complex is also in the pipeline,” he added.

    Attacks

The President of the AMJG, Justice Henry Kwofie, said it was unfortunate that people nowadays took judges of the highest court of the land to the cleaners without any basis or justification.

Justice Kwofie who is a Justice of the Court of Appeal, said criticisms of judges should be focused on the application of the law in judgments and not on the personality of the judges.

“We have been attacked, maligned and all sorts of things have been said about judges based on erroneous impressions and deliberate falsehoods. By the nature of our work, we cannot go to the media to defend ourselves,” he said.

In an address, Mr Boafo said although the judiciary was fallible and therefore have to be criticised, unwarranted and unjustifiable attacks on judges endangered their safety and brought the administration of justice into disrepute.

For his part, Mr Oppong said judges must not allow social media and media coverage of their cases to influence them into making populist decisions.

  • Teacher Kwadwo details how his headmaster betrayed him

Ghanaian professional teacher who doubles as a media personality, Michael Owusu Afriyie, known chiefly as Teacher Kwadwo has narrated how a headmaster betrayed him leading to his dismissal by the Ghana Education Service (GES) back in 2021.

Teacher Kwadwo who is known to be a ‘people-person’ at the Akrofrom District Assembly Primary School in the Ashanti Region was sacked for insubordination and misconduct. He was also tagged as incompetent.

According to a GES statement, he was absent from school for 55 days in an academic year.

But explaining his side of the story once again, the dismissed teacher claimed that his headmaster whom he gave his name as Timothy, granted him permission to be absent from school on Fridays due to a programme he was running on television.

He maintained that authorities from his district hated him for no reason, leading them to plot evil against his career despite his service to the school.

“Some people from the district plotted against me when I started my donations to the school. I can’t tell if it was jealousy or maybe they were mad I was rather working… I was the one forcing to get the students better education but they claimed I was always absent from class. That was the genesis of all my woes.

“Every Saturday, I was on United Showbiz where I run my programme. After I close from teaching, I rush to Accra. On some days, I get to Kumasi at 12 am at dawn. I will sleep on the bus and get to Accra around 5 am. It was during the back and forth that my headmaster one time had a conversation with me. He talked about the help I give the children with the money I make and so he wanted to do something that can help release the stress and burden on me.

“He said that in my class, we had two teachers and so he said that Fridays will be given to me as off-days simply because the students lose nothing… We all had a meeting over that because it wasn’t bad even though it wasn’t a government decision… We made sure that the students were not going to lose… From there, I was travelling to Accra on Fridays… It went on for two months,” Teacher Kwadwo disclosed in an interview on Mahyease TV Show with Afia Amankwaah Tamakloe.

He continued: “Although I had Fridays off, I sometimes came to school to sort things out. Even my master was like okay if you will come on Friday, that’s up to you… On days when I asked for permission to be absent, he can say that the time wasn’t favourable so don’t go… I guess the district hated me for that and so they went into the Time Book where we signed. They accumulated it and said it all accounted for 51 days. I told them that I didn’t run from school but sought permission from my Master to be absent.”

Teacher Kwadwo received the shock of his life when his headmaster testified that he never consented to his decision to be outside the classroom on Fridays or any other day.

Speaking in the interview monitored by GhanaWeb, he noted that his headmaster feared losing his position, the reason he betrayed him despite having a teacher testify that indeed he consented to that arrangement.

“When my master was called, I guess he was afraid, he also denied ever permitting me to be absent. I screamed ‘Timothy, how could you?’ I have toiled for these students, I gave them laptops, supplied the school team with football boots, and 4 brand new TVs. I even renovated the school, so I asked why could Timothy do that to me. The authorities then said that my master claims not to have had anything to do with my absenteeism. One of my colleagues even testified that the master granted me permission after a meeting but that didn’t convince them,” he lamented.

Meanwhile, part of the GES letter that explained its decision to sack the popular teacher read: “He further even refused to respond to a query issued to him by the District Director and in addition refused to appear before a panel set up by the District Director to investigate his conduct.”

The Minister of Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, made this known in a speech read on his behalf at the 2022 Ghana International Petroleum Conference (GhIPCON) in Accra yesterday.

He stated that the CRM, under the auspices of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), was expected to increase access to LPG and ensure safe delivery to end-users.

“The implementation of the CRM requires the introduction of LPG bottling plants, bulk cylinder transportation, cylinder warehousing, cylinder exchange points and cylinder delivery infrastructure.

“Hence, the price build-up of the LPG is being reviewed to guarantee a return on investment made in LPG infrastructure for the safe distribution of LPG as a clean cooking fuel, while rationalizing the price of LPG for consumers,” he said.

    The conference

Under the theme: “Energy Transition in the African Petroleum Downstream Context: Prospects, Challenges and the Way Forward”, the fifth edition of the conference seeks to focus on the readiness of Africa’s petroleum downstream on changes coming in the next few decades.

The conference is expected to end tomorrow.

The annual conference is designed to actively bring to the fore the petroleum industry’s perspective and guidance on issues of governmental and regulatory policy, along with best practices for the advancement of the industry not only in Ghana, but across the West African sub-region and beyond.

It is organised by the NPA, in partnership with the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors, the Ministry of Energy and the Africa Refiners and Distributors Association.

The Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, opened the conference through a televised presentation.

    Petroleum downstream

The Chief Executive Officer of the NPA, Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, noted that Africa’s petroleum downstream sector was entering into a new era.

He explained that as the world looked to accelerate its transition away from fossil fuels, the pressures on industries were mounting.

“We are all exposed to the global energy transition, as our countries depend on oil and gas revenues,” he said.

He stated that the country’s petroleum downstream industry, which had an annual sales value of about GH¢32.94 billion, according to 2021 estimates, contributed 7.2 per cent of the gross domestic product.

That, he said, represented a 41 per cent increase in demand for fossil fuels as compared to 2020.

“This is an unprecedented surge in consumption of fossil fuels when the annual average over the years had been between five and seven per cent,” Dr Abdul-Hamid said.

“The reality of fulfilling the energy transition commitment is that there will be further pressure on government spending to ensure that our diversification process meets global needs,” he added.

  • Ghana plans to transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy by 2070 – Dr. Bawumia

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has said government plans to transition from the use of fossil fuel to renewable energy by 2070.

According to him, the future development will require stakeholders in the energy sector to hasten efforts aimed at enhancing production and utilisation of Ghana’s oil and gas reserves.

Addressing participants at the 5th Ghana International Petroleum Conference (GhIPCon) on September 28, the Vice President said Ghana remains committed to achieving zero net carbon emissions but will do so at a slow and sustainable pace.

“Let me add that Ghana has set a target of 2070 to fully transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. So, even though as a government, we are fully committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2070, we also have to take steps to accelerate the production and utilization of our oil and gas reserves,” he noted.

“What this means is that even though we want to contribute to reducing emissions, we are of the view that a balance must be struck and maintained in the context of our social, economic, and environmental requirements,” Dr Bawumia added.

He further pointed out that natural gas use will remain a key part of Ghana‘s energy mix in the short term.

“…So, fossil fuels, particularly natural gas will continue to be part of Ghana’s energy mix in the short term, whilst strategies will be put in place to increase the share of renewable energy in the mix from medium to long term,” the Vice president stated.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority, Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid said government will continue to ensure emissions from petroleum products are significantly reduced in the future.

“We at the NPA are committed to support government’s agenda in reducing the emissions from the energy products we consume in Ghana. And I’m glad to mention we were the first west African country to reduce sulphur content in transport and industrial fuels from a maximum of 5000ppm to a maximum of 50ppm,” Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid stated.

  • Osebo and son rescued from burning car

Ghanaian socialite, Richard Brown, known widely as ‘Osebo the Zaraman’, has shared on social media that he nearly lost his life and that of his child when his vehicle burst into flames and was consumed totally.

In a Facebook post, ‘Osebo the Zaraman’ unveiled that he was thankful to God for saving them.

“We serve a living God, my God just saved me and my son @kwame.preko from burning this night, I will always be grateful,” he praised on September 29, 2022.

The Fashionista caught his captured burnt four-wheel drive parked close to a trailer to his more than 13, 900 followers on Facebook.

It wasn’t affirmed the way that the mishap occurred, what might have caused it, and what the trailer was doing alongside it.

A derivation could be made using how the video was taken that the trailer was there to transport it to the junkyard.
Meanwhile, in the video that was shared by the socialite, his son was nowhere to be found when he narrated his ordeal.

As and when there are any updates on the accident, GhanaWeb will follow up to update its readers.

  • We have to be precise instead of hammering the ball into the net – Otto Addo

When given the chance to score against Nicaragua on Tuesday night, Ghana’s players lacked poise and only wanted to hammer the ball into the net, which infuriated coach Otto Addo.

Sporting Lisbon winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku scored the only goal of the match in the 35th minute of the encounter as the Black Stars bounced back to winning ways in Lorca, having lost 3-0 to Brazil last Friday.

In a lackluster effort against the Central American country, which is ranked 79 places lower than Ghana, they wasted a ton of opportunities.

Speaking after the game, coach Addo admitted his side should have scored more had they been clinical in front of goal.

“It is just like we have to be a little bit more composed, a little bit also more cool on the ball and sometimes we have to take some time and make another cut, maybe lay it off to a player who is in a position to score,” the 47-year-old said.

“We were also unlucky at some point not to score more goals and there goalkeeper did very well, and we have to be a little bit precise instead of always wanting to hammer the ball into the net, we have a young squad, a lot of young players today, and a squad of new players, and this is quite normal.”

Ghana will play Switzerland in another preparatory game on November 17, seven days before their opening game at the World Cup against Portugal.

“Children need so much love, care and attention therefore the absence of it makes them feel left out”, she said .

She cleared the air about people’s assumptions that they were okay just by looking at the infrastructure, so they weren’t even considered.

”People assume we do not lack anything and have everything at our disposal but that isn’t the case. If we’re to start listing the number of things we need, I do not think we will finish”.

The CEO of RIL-GH, Emmanuel Boateng, extended his gratitude to God for a successful journey and experience from the inception of the company till date.

The Board Chairman, Dr Dwomoa Adu, thanked the board of directors for their enormous support to the company and wished them well in their endeavours.

  • I wish Inaki well playing for Ghana – Nico Williams

Inaki Williams, the senior brother of Nico Williams, has chosen to represent the nation of his parents’ Ghana, and Nico Williams has sent his best wishes to him.

Inaki Williams agreed to play for Ghana in July of this year after years of rejecting their advances and having one cap for Spain.

While Nico Williams unexpectedly received a call-up to the Spain national team for their UEFA Nations League games.

Inaki Williams played two games for Ghana during the international break, the first one against Brazil and the second one against Nicaragua.

Nico Williams also made his debut in Spain’s 2-1 loss against Switzerland before providing the assist for Alvaro Morata’s winner against Portugal in the UEFA Nations League game.

“It was a natural decision, each one took their path and made their decision in a thoughtful way,” Nico said.

“I am very happy that my brother is in Ghana, I wish him things to go well, that he can have a great World Cup and achieve the highest goals.”

The two brothers join Kevin Prince Boateng and Jerome Boateng who played for two different nations Ghana and Germany and even faced each other at the 2010 World Cup group stage which Germany won 1-0 and the 2014 World Cup group stage game which ended 2-2.

  • GRIDCo, Uganda to develop cooperation

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has agreed to cooperate with Uganda to develop the technical competence in the management of that country’s power transmission network to enable it to deliver sustainable and reliable power to its citizens.

Uganda has reached out to GRIDCo to seek an insight into the progress made over the years in the power transmission business to enable it to benchmark its operations in the areas of commercialisation of communication assets, particularly optic fibre and other data products.

An eight-member delegation from that country led by the Chairman of the Ugandan Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL), Kwame Ejalu Ejuku, will for the next three days hold discussions with GRIDCo and other power sector players on project implementation in the face of challenges, capacity building among others.

GRIDCo, on the other hand, is expected to enhance the technical capacity of the visiting team by sharing knowledge and best practices on transmission infrastructure, operations, mitigating vandalism on grid towers among other technical expertise that will be relevant to the delegation.

    Development

At a meeting with the team, the Board Chairman of GRIDCo, Kabral Blay Amihere, said the acceptance of technology as a key driver of economic growth allowing for efficiency in the production of goods and services was an indication that power was what Africa was using to scale up its development.

Mr Amihere pointed out that GRIDCo, building on its infrastructure and technical expertise over the years, had allowed the company to be in a strategic position to export power to neighbouring countries such as Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Togo and Benin.

The leader of the delegation, Mr Ejuku in his remarks indicated that UETCL was rolling out a number of projects to double that country’s transmission grid in the next three years, hence their interest to benchmark GRIDCo’s success in the various areas.

“The UETCL board is aware of the maturity of GRIDCo and its successes with regard to the extent of coverage, as well as management of its telecom assets through Gridtel and we are interested to learn about the commercialisation and other relevant operational areas that will benefit our country,” Mr Ejuku said.

The Chief Executive Officer of UETCL, Michael Taremwa, in a remark said the company currently had a circuit length of 3.385 kilometres made up of 1,002 kilometres of 220 kilovolt lines.

The company, he said, purchased power from 41 generators and sold to six distributors, thus requiring the need for them to have a robust network that demanded visibility through the control centre, as well as a reliable grid to evacuate power from generators, “given that demand for power is at distances far away from the generation point,” he said.

A situation, he said had seen transmission loss standing between 4.2 and 4.5 per cent, posing a danger to their operations.
    GRIDCo

The Chief Executive of GRIDCo, Ebenezer Essienyi, in his welcome remarks expressed delight at the visit by the Ugandans.

He said the future depended on how the company positioned itself to meet the ever-growing power needs of Ghanaians, bulk customers and sub-regional obligations.

  • Thomas Partey expected to make injury return for Arsenal against Tottenham

Thomas Partey, a star for Ghana, might suit up for Arsenal against Tottenham Hotspurs in the North London derby on Saturday.

Due to an injury, Partey was unable to participate in the Black Stars’ friendly matches against Brazil and Nicaragua.

The midfielder, who just just overcame a thigh issue, was set to play against Brazil last Friday but was taken off the pitch during warmups after feeling uneasy.

The former star of Atletico Madrid was given approval to leave the Ghanaian camp in France for more evaluation.

Footballghana.com understands the Gunners are hopeful Partey will be fit in time for the north London derby this weekend after assessing the player.

Partey has featured four times this season for the Premier League giants.

  • Fuse ODG also cites GTA for unauthorised use of his content

Musician Fuse ODG has also claimed ownership of some excerpts in the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA)’s promotional video that featured President Akufo-Addo.

In a press statement released by his company, New Africa Nation, the musician’s team revealed that some scenes were picked from his video ‘New African Girl’.

“We have sanctioned works in the past for Government use, most notably, our 2018 record, “Bra Fie” featuring Damian Marley, which was used as the theme song for the “Year of Return’; which we launched via our TINA Festival alongside the President of Ghana,” they noted.

They added that “however, no such process was observed in relation to the recent video in question regarding our record “New African Girl”.

“We sympathise with Kirani Ayat. As creative persons, we sacrifice a lot to be able to put together a song, let alone a whole video with high-quality production value.”

This comes after musician Kirani Ayat called out the Tourism Ministry and the Authority for copyright infringement.

A video shared on President Akufo-Addo’s social media handles promoting tourism used footage from his ‘Guda’ music video.

Kirani Ayat who was not pleased to see his work used without his consent noted that he spent money in making the video without aid from anyone and yet he was not compensated after his content was used.

“The president of Ghana has used my video “GUDA” in this ad to promote Ghana. I was actively reaching out to the Ministry of Tourism in 2018/19 to use this video to push tourism in the North and got NO reply, yet today it’s in an ad and no one reached out to me for permission,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, Fuse ODG believes their rights were infringed upon because of the lack of respect and understanding of intellectual property.

“As a Company, we have stayed true to our own mission-investing hundreds of thousands of dollars to promote Ghana over the years, which we will continue to do. Clearly, mistakes have been made by the Government in this situation, but hopefully, they can take corrective action to compensate accordingly.”

The singer noted that they hope the GTA and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture invest in more education around intellectual property both internally and for the creative sector.

“In the meantime, our legal team is in discussion with the Ministry and their legal team in order to resolve this issue,” he added.

  • Don’t abandon COVID-19 protocols : Public advised at health science conference

The fourth biennial scientific conference of the College of Health Sciences of the University of Ghana opened in Accra yesterday[September 28, 2022], with a call on Ghanaian public to adhere to the COVID-19 protocols in order not to be overtaken by events.

The Chief Executive Officer of Promasidor Ghana, Festus Tettey, who made the call, said the public appeared to have become complacent with the pandemic, and were no longer vigilant.

“A few places of business still provide hand sanitisers, while most don’t provide hand-washing logistics. Let us not become complacent in adhering to all the necessary precautions that we have learnt to follow,” he advised.

The three-day conference — attended by professionals and experts in the health sciences — was dubbed: “COVID-19 pandemic to date: the uncertain path ahead”.

Mr Tettey said it was possible to slow down and prevent the spread of the pandemic and any new diseases that the country might encounter, stressing, however, that the onus was on everyone to take personal responsibility by adhering to the protocols.

    Health system

He pointed out that COVID-19 had become a feature of the health system, and that it was important that people learnt to live with it.

“Despite the strides made globally and in the country in combating the pandemic, the path ahead is still unclear. Indeed, as recently as last month, the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned of more dangerous COVID-19 variants.

“This come on top of other viral disease outbreaks such as Monkeypox. All these facts support the assertion that the path ahead is uncertain.

Let us not be complacent in adhereing to all the necessary precautions in our everyday lives,” he added.

Mr Tettey said the outbreak of COVID-19 affected the economy, including supply chain disruptions that had led to massive costs to businesses.

    Poor vaccination

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Development of the University of Ghana, Prof. Felix Ankomah Asante, said it was serious that about 68 per cent of the country’s population were reported not to have been vaccinated against the health crisis.

He urged the conference to deliberate on why Ghanaians were behaving that way towards the vaccination, pointing out that if the country was able to achieve 100 per cent coverage immunisation of children under five in certain areas, it should be possible to achieve same for the whole population.

Prof. Asante gave the assurance that the university would continue to provide the enabling environment to conduct high quality research to address the needs of the country.

He disclosed that the university, through its office of research, innovation and development, hoped to review its current research areas towards ones that promoted innovation; re-orient its research towards addressing global challenges, and for its faculty to train the next generation of scientists and researchers.

Prof. Asante explained that malaria research would, for example, be broadened to include COVID-19 and non-communicable diseases, while considering the use of artificial intelligence in the research strategy.

The Provost of the College of Health Sciences of the University of Ghana, Prof. Julius Fobil, said conferences of the college were one of the several ways it sought to promote its research, provide services and address the health challenges of the nation and the global community.

  • Arsenal to sign Brazilian midfielder in January as Partey struggles to stay fit

Thomas Partey‘s injury problems are concerning English Premier League team Arsenal.

Since leaving Spanish La Liga team Atletico Madrid, the Ghanaian international has had trouble staying in shape.

The Black Stars’ star player has missed a handful of games over the past three seasons due to various injuries.

Thomas Partey had an injury before to the international break and missed a few games.

When he was well enough, Ghana invited him to watch their games against Brazil and Nicaragua.

He experienced soreness during the warm-up for the match against Brazil and was forced to leave the field.

Now back in England, reports indicate that there are growing concerns over the payer’s inability to stay fit.

As a result, officials of the London-based club have decided to bring in a new midfielder in the frame of Thomas Partey.

Aston Villa’s Douglas Ruiz has been identified as the right fit and Arsenal will attempt to sign him in the January transfer window.

  • Varsity labour unions threaten strike … Over alleged varied conditions of service

Four labour unions in the public universities have called on the government to immediately rescind its intention to vary their conditions of service.

Failure to do that, they said, would compel them to withdraw their services — teaching and related activities — from Wednesday, October 5, 2022.

The four unions are the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) and the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG).

    Presser

Speaking on behalf of the unions at a news conference in Accra yesterday, the President of UTAG, Prof. Solomon Nunoo, said their working conditions had been overly varied on their blind side, with the intention of a selective application of the same conditions unbeknown to them by the employer.

“The labour unions took notice of a letter from the Ministry of Finance on the revision of fuel allowance payable to eligible staff in public and technical universities dated August 5, 2022, and signed by the Deputy Minister of Finance, Abena Osei-Asare,” he said.

He also referred to another letter from the Ministry of Finance dated March 16, 2022, on the subject: “Allowances Payable on the Payroll of Public Universities”, signed again by Ms Osei-Asare and addressed to the Director General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

Prof. Nunoo said UTAG had since written two letters to the Minister of Finance and the Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission (NLC) dated April 11, 2022 and June 15, 2022 and copied to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) seeking “clarification on the basis for the unilateral variation in the conditions of service of university teachers and by extension all workers of public universities without the laid down procedures for negotiations”.

    Response

“Unfortunately, UTAG did not receive a response from the Minister of Finance; and again response in respect of NLC’s directive, where the NLC gave the Minister of Finance seven working days to respond, was to no avail.

“In UTAG’s previous letters, UTAG stated unequivocally that per the signed Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the employer and UTAG on June 16, 2021, the employer agreed to review fuel allowance bi-annually with the approved rates and the first date review should have occurred in December 2021, but did not happen in spite of the reminders sent to the employer,” he explained.

Prof. Nunoo said contrary to the MoA under reference, the Minister of Finance, per its own letter dated March 16, 2022, again directed that fuel allowance and other allowances that depended on ex-pump price for fuel, which was, hitherto, pegged to number of gallons had now been converted and determined in absolute rates without recourse to any of the labour unions in the public universities.

“Thus, we totally reject this absolute rate as the procedure for taking such a decision was not followed and the status quo should remain until agreed at a negotiation. Again, the employer ignored the concerns of the unions,” he said, adding that “after a long delay in respect of the bi-annual review, the Minister of Finance, in a letter dated August 5, 2022, gave approval for the adjustment of ex-pump price of fuel and, consequently, the unit cost pegged at GH¢10.99 per litre with effect from July 1, 2022, for all eligible staff after more than a year of the signing of the MoA.”

The UTAG President said, “it has come to our knowledge that, henceforth, there is going to be disparities in the implementation of this adjusted ex-pump rate, which is contrary to the existing practice, notably for Vehicle Maintenance and Off-Campus Allowances.

“The disparities here being that it is going to be applicable only to duty bearers of our universities. This action is not only unacceptable but creates a class system, like the famous George Owel’s Animal Farm and discounting that the other members of staff and the duty bearer both go to the same marketplace,” Prof. Nunoo said.

“We wish to put on record that the Vehicle Maintenance and Off-Campus Allowances, payable to eligible staff in public universities in Ghana, are paid on a base rate of GH¢4.99 per litre until June 2021 when it was adjusted to GH¢6.05 per litre. So, what has changed for this blatant disregard for the agreed laid down procedures,” he said.

According to him, the intended reversal of the recent upward adjustments from GH¢10.99 to GH¢6.05 was just not reflective of the economic conditions at the pump and, therefore, unthinkable for the government even to conceive such an idea to do so.

UTAG and her sister unions, he said, would wish to entreat the employer to thread carefully so as not to mar the already jeopardised tertiary education front, saying the labour unions would not countenance such fragrant disregard of agreed modalities of conditions of service.

    Strike

Prof. Nunoo said following the suspension of the UTAG Strike action in March 2022, the National Executive Committee of UTAG promised to monitor and police the full implementation of all agreements with the government, and to work with clear timelines and roadmaps to ensure that all promises and agreements were respected.

However, he said, it was sad to note that there were still challenges with the implementation of the Online Teaching Support Allowance, while non-payroll allowances were still outstanding.

“This situation has made the university teacher worse off in the face of the present precarious economic situation we find ourselves in, and yet the employer is bent on derailing the little gains achieved,” he said.

Again, he said, the unions had observed that the implementation of the GTEC document on Harmonised Allowances had made several university administrators and professionals worse off, which was against the labour laws, and that “this requires urgent attention for redress”.

“Lastly, the payment of the Book and Research Allowances (BRA) for this year has delayed. This continued delay is also causing unnecessary apprehension on the various campuses. The employer should remember that we are in a new academic year, for which reason the continuous delay in the payment is unacceptable.

“Per the agreement that led to the suspension of the UTAG industrial action, the 2021/2022 BRA were slated to be paid at the end of August 2022. Unfortunately, to date, they have not been paid. The constant follow-ups have only yielded evasive excuses, and typical of the reactionary and less proactive leadership style, all the relevant ministries and their heads, including Finance, National Security, Education, and Employment, and the National Labour Commission are looking on, and waiting for us to explode before they act,” he lamented

  • Otto Addo allays injury fears of Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey ahead of Liverpool clash

Tariq Lamptey will be allowed to train upon returning to Brighton and Hove Albion ahead of their match against Liverpool, according to Ghana coach Otto Addo.

Lamptey was included in Otto Addo’s 29-man squad for friendlies against Brazil and Nicaragua after switching allegiance to Ghana in June.

He debuted for the Black Stars when Ghana lost 3-0 against South American powerhouse Brazil in Le Havre, France.

However, Lamptey’s injury prevented him from playing in Ghana’s 1-0 friendly victory over Nicaragua at Lorca, Spain.

Ghana coach Otto Addo confirmed Lamptey “felt something” during the warm-up at training ahead of the Nicaragua match but was hopeful he will be able to train on his return to the club.

“We just didn’t want to take that risk and it doesn’t look too bad.” He said.

Meanwhile, Brighton will be monitoring the injury situation of the enterprising right-back ahead of the Liverpool encounter this weekend.

  • Ghana to transition from fossil to renewable energy by 2070

The Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced plans by the government to transition from the use of fossil fuel to renewable energy by 2070.

Towards that, he said, the National Energy Transition Committee had been established to draft a framework geared towards achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

“So, even though as a government, we are fully committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2070, we also have to take steps to accelerate the production and utilisation of our oil and gas reserves,” Dr Bawumia said, when he opened the 2022 Ghana International Petroleum Conference (GhIPCon) in Accra yesterday[September 28, 2022].

At the three-day conference on the theme “Energy Transition in the African Petroleum Downstream Context: Prospects, Challenges and the Way Forward”, the Vice-President said that meant that although the country wanted to contribute to reducing emissions, it held the view that a balance must be struck and maintained in the context of social, economic and environmental requirements.

Fossil fuels include coal, petroleum, natural gas, oil shales, bitumen, tar sands and heavy oils which emit carbons when used, therefore not so environmentally friendly.

Renewable energy, on the other hand, are sourced directly from the earth’s elements such as the sun, water (hydro), wind and degradable materials such as plants and animal droppings, usually known as biomass. They are known to be environmentally friendly because they do not emit carbons that can destroy both the environment and the sun’s covering, the ozone layer.

    Accelerate production

Vice-President Bawumia charged stakeholders in the energy sector to accelerate the production and utilisation of oil and gas reserves in the country.

“We ought to be forward thinking in a rapidly changing world, not only in terms of energy transition, but in terms of all aspects of the energy-mix,” he said.

He indicated that would enable the country to insulate its energy sector from global economic shocks, especially considering how the Russia-Ukraine war had affected the energy sector in the last few months.

“So, I expect this conference to become a sounding board for our governments in the West Africa region on how we can be full participants in the energy transition process, while remaining faithful to the needs and aspirations of our people,” Dr Bawumia said.

He expressed the hope that the petroleum downstream industry would continue to be the anchor for the transformation of the country.

    Govt commitment

The Vice-President also reiterated the government’s commitment to reducing emissions from consumption of petroleum products.

“I am glad to mention that we were the first West African country to reduce sulphur content in transport and industrial fuels from a maximum of 5000 parts per million (ppm) of sulphur to a maximum of 50ppm,” he stated

The National Petroleum Authority organised the forum in collaboration with the African Refiners and Distributors Association and the Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors.

It attracted major players, including chief executive officers, experts and decision makers in the petroleum sector across the West Africa sub-region.

  • Next Hearts of Oak coach must have a tough skin – Sam Johnson

Legendary Hearts of Oak player Sam Johnson thinks the team needs a tough-minded coach to change its fortunes.

After two seasons as the club’s coach, Hearts of Oak fired Samuel Boadu on Tuesday, September 27, 2022.

During his two years at Hearts of Oak, Samuel Boadu won five trophies, including the Ghana Premier League, two FA Cups, the President’s Cup, and the Super Cup.

Sam Johnson expects the next coach may be under a lot of strain and must be able to live up to the standards set by coach Boadu.

“It will depend on the kind of coach that they will bring because now the pressure will be there. They need somebody who can stand on that pressure, that is the first thing that they have to do,” the former Hearts of Oak defender told Radio Gold.

“Because Phobia pressure is something else so they need an experienced coach, somebody who has been in the terrain so that he will be able to stand when the pressure is coming. But if you sign somebody who cannot stand the pressure, then the players cannot stand the pressure.

“Then it means it is going to be worse than what it used to be so they need somebody who is strong and can stand the pressure of Hearts of Oak.

“They need somebody who is strong and disciplined so that the players will understand exactly what the club means or what it means to play for Hearts of Oak and I think things will go well for them.” Sam Johnson added.

Samuel Boadu was sacked after failing to win a game in three matches in the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League.

His team lost to Aduana Stars and drew with Asante Kotoko and Great Olympics
