  • Isaac Dogboe is considering a third match against Emanuel Navarette

Isaac Dogboe has stated that he intends to challenge WBC Champion Emanuel Navarrete in a third bout.

The former WBO Super Bantamweight Champion Dogboe has suffered two career defeats to the Mexican boxer in two consecutive fights.

The first bout saw Dogboe lose his WBO Super Bantamweight title in 2019 before losing a rematch bout to him a year later.

Since their last bout, the two boxers have both moved up in weight, and Navarrete has won one additional belt.

Following his victory by a split decision against Joet Gonzalez, Dogboe will likely face the Mexican boxer who could become his mandatory challenger.

The Ghanaian boxer said, “I don’t shy away from a challenge; that is what makes me different from the others. That is why though I lost twice to the same person, the name Isaac Dogboe was still relevant in boxing.

“It’s all about being able to challenge yourself; you can’t say that because I didn’t that the results from this person, I’m going to stay away from him. I am the mandatory challenger, so whoever they bring, I’m ready,” Dogboe said in an interview with Joy Sports.

Dogboe could become a two-time world champion at age 27 if he is able to overcome his next challenger in a world title bout.

  • Frimpong Manso unhappy with Coach Prosper Narteh’s resignation ahead of Africa campaign

Prior to their CAF Champions League preliminary round matchup against Rail Club du Kadiogo, Asante Kotoko Legend Frimpong Manso claims that coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum would have been the ideal choice to lead the Porcupines.

Coach Dr. Prosper Nartey Ogum guided Asante Kotoko to win the Ghana Premier league title last season.

The former WAFA coach later tendered in his resignation some few weeks ago.

Asante Kotoko with just some few weeks to the first leg encounter against the Burkinabe club are without a head coach.

Speaking in an interview on Happy FM Coach Frimpong Manso said he would have preferred Coach Prosper Narteh Ogum to be in charge of the game.

”The disadvantage Asante Kotoko have now is that time is not on their side. Looking at the time in which a new coach is coming in and the departure of certain key plays out of the team with even barely a month before the fixture, I think Kotoko have limited time to be able develop a formidable team in time”.

The Ghana Premier League champions will face the Burkinabe side in this two-legged fixture for a place in the next round of the competition.

  • African players Uriah Asante and six others who died after passing out on the field

Death, they say, is inevitable, but in the African tradition, how you make the transition from this life to the afterlife is critical to considering it a mysterious death or not.

Though every death is painful no matter the age of the person, we, as lovers of football, will never forget the painful deaths of some players whose deaths will never be forgotten because of how and what they were doing before meeting their end.

Many footballers have lost their lives to accidents or diseases, but those who lost their lives on the pitch while playing football with a huge crowd attendance and media coverage will never be forgotten as Manchester City has retired the number 26 to remember the late Marc-Vivien Foé.

Maybe, many of such deaths happened and weren’t recorded, but today, August 12, 2022, in the history books, former Super Eagles player, Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji, was the first player to die on the football pitch.

Samuel died while playing in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Angola at the National Stadium in Lagos. He collapsed ten minutes into the game, and that was the last time he was seen playing football.

According to reports in Nigeria, he died from complications of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, as the autopsy showed an enlarged heart and high blood pressure.

GhanaWeb commemorates with the family of Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji and the people of Nigeria, and we remember the six other African players who met their end on the pitch.

Here are the six other African players who died on the football pitch:

    Uriah Asante

The former Accra Hearts of Oak player is the first on this list as he is the only Ghanaian footballer to have died after collapsing on the football pitch or in training.

He was reported to have collapsed in training with his club, Etoile du Sahel in Tunisia and died from a reported cardiac arrest.

Uriah Asante died at the age of 24, having spent two years with Accra Hearts of Oak.

    Marc-Vivien Foé – Cameroon

The former defensive midfielder of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon who was born on May 1, 1975, in Yaounde died while playing for his country in the FIFA Confederation Cup against Colombia.

Foé passed out in the game against Columbia, and despite the attempts of the medics to revive him for 45 minutes, he couldn’t make it as he died hours later on June 26, 2003.

At the time of his sudden death, Marc-Vivien Foé was a player of Manchester City on loan from Olympique Lyonnais.

    Cheick Tiote – Ivory Coast

Born on June 21, 1986, in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast, the former Newcastle United midfielder died on the training pitch with his Chinese Super League club Beijing Enterprises Group.

He died at the age of 30 on June 5, 2017, and was said to have passed out after suffering from Cardiac arrest.

    Moise Brou Apanga – Gabon

Making 33 appearances and scored a goal for the Gabonese national team from 2007 to 2013, the former Brescia defender died at the age of 35 from a heart attack.

He died after collapsing during a training session with his home-based, FC 105 Libreville on April 26, 2017.

He featured twice in the Africa Cup of Nations (2010 and 2012) for the Panthers of Gabon.

    Patrick Ekeng – Cameroon

Born in Yaoundé, Cameroon on March 26, 1990, Patrick Ekeng died while playing for Romanian club Dinamo București in 2016.

He died on May 6, 2016, after collapsing in a league game while playing for Dinamo București against Viitorul Constanța.

He collapsed 7 minutes after being introduced in the game in the 70th minute and his death was attributed to a heart attack.

Patrick made only two appearances for the Cameroonian national team after making his debut in 2012 before his sudden death in 2016.

    Chaswe Nsofwa

He made his debut for the Zambia national team in 2000, making 33 appearances and scoring 9 goals before his death at the age of 28 in 2007.

Nsofwa collapsed in training while preparing for a league game with his club Hapoel Be’er Sheva and couldn’t survive.

He was declared dead upon his arrival at the Soroka Medical Center in Israel.

  • Kingsley Sarfo to miss Europa Conference League over travel ban to Sweden

Due to a travel restriction, Ghanaian midfielder Kingsley Sarfo won’t be traveling with his Apoel Nicosia colleagues for the Europa Conference League match against Djurgaden.

The former IK Sirius star has been banned from travelling to Sweden for ten year following his conviction in a rape case during his time at Malmo.

The Apoel Nicosia midfielder was jailed for two years and eight months after he was accused of raping a minor.

However, after years of back and forth with the law, the Ghana international was set free and has bounced back to playing football.

He spent the last few years in Cyprus where he has been one of the starts in the Cypriot League.

Apoel will face Djugarden in the first leg of their Europa Conference League on Thursday, August 18, without the Ghanaian.

But Sarfo will be available for the second leg in Nicosia, where he reunites with former trainers Kim Bergstrand and Thomas Lagerlöf.

“There is no difference to facing others, it’s more that you know a little more about a player in the opposing team in that case… but now we go ahead of the events, we will focus on the match tomorrow,” Lagerlöf told World Football Channel.

  • Bagbin renovates the VIP stand of the Wa sports stadium

The Wa Sports Stadium in the Upper West has received a significant facelift thanks to extensive rehabilitation work by Speaker of the House Alban Sumana Bagbin.

He renovated the VIP stand of the facility to the satisfaction of everyone, especially the Upper West sporting fraternity.

The edifice which was built as part of Ghana at 50 celebrations, has had the VIP stand ripped off by storm and deteriorated due to the unfavorable weather conditions.

It has now been given a facelift by Mr. Bagbin with the renovation of the roofing, fixing of seats, and painting.

This was after one of the most vibrant youth activists in the region, Awudu Ishaq, made a plea on behalf of the people of the Upper West Region to the Speaker, Alban SK Bagbin.

The former Nadowli Kaleo lawmaker heeded to the call and immediately provided funds for the commencement of work.

The renovated facility will be handed over to the community in the coming weeks.

Sister Derby has moved on from her messy breakup with ‘sweet ex’ rapper Medikal and it’s evident in how she is able to sing and dance to ‘Too Risky’, a song she recorded with the rapper in 2016.

In a video shared on Derby’s Snapchat, her new man, David was captured mimicking her former boyfriend’s introduction line on the song.

‘Bo me din ma me’ which translates to English as ‘Say my name’.

The ‘Uncle Obama’ hitmaker who was serving as a backup singer to David justified her right to the song. She exclaimed: +”It is my song too” as she went ahead nodding her head to ‘Too Risky’.

Medikal and Sister Deborah were onetime the sweethearts of the music industry until earlier 2018 when they confirmed their split with Derby sighting Fella Makafui as the woman who got in between them.

The rapper and Fella made their relationship public after several rumours and on March 7, 2020, the two got married in a private wedding ceremony. They have been blessed with a daughter, Island Frimpong.

  • Continuous land degradation worrying – Owusu-Bio

The Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources in charge of Lands and Forestry, Benito Owusu-Bio, has expressed grave concern over the continuous destruction of the environment through illegal mining and sand-winning activities, despite concerted efforts made to deal with the menaces.

He said it was worrying that in spite of the fact that the regulatory agencies, such as the Minerals Commission and the Lands Commission, had consistently sensitised the public to the need to protect the land, many recalcitrant people still engaged in activities that destroyed the environment and posed health risks to the public.

He said since it was obvious that some people had failed to respect the laws on the environment, the Lands Ministry and its agencies would go all out to crack the whip on culprits.

He said this during an inspection tour of state lands at Amrahia in the Adentan municipality in the Greater Accra Region yesterday.

    Amrahia lands

The government acquired the 1,381-acre land at Amrahia in the 1960s, mainly for agricultural and dairy purposes.

After many years of little investment, over 150 acres of the land have been encroached upon.

Currently, discussions are ongoing between the government and the pre-acquisition owners for the release of 40 per cent of the land to the chiefs and the families in the area in lieu of compensation, as required by law.

    Sand winning

During yesterday’s visit to the area, it was discovered that large tracts of the land had been destroyed by illegal sand winners.

The affected land, about the size of three football fields, had been wiped off by the illegal sand winners.

The sand-winning activities had also left residents of the area battling with dust.

Mr Owusu-Bio, who was visibly angered by the development, stressed that the ministry would go all out to crack down on the illegality, and warned that all persons behind the illegal sand-winning activities on state lands at Amrahia to stop with immediate effect,

He stressed that recalcitrant illegal sand-winners would be arrested and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.

“This is government land; why should people be destroying it this way! We have not given anyone any permit to win sand here, so anyone doing it is acting illegally and he or she will be made to face the law,” he said.

    Land allocation

On the release of 40 per cent of the land to the pre-acquisition owners, Mr Owusu-Bio said the process would be completed in about two months.

He said surveyors had finished survey activities on the land, paving the way for allocation to be made to the various families.

“The surveyors have been able to determine where the allocation to the various families will fall; and I am satisfied with the work they have done. What is left is for the Lands Ministry and the Lands Commission to get the necessary documentation done,” he said.

The deputy minister called on the beneficiary families to cooperate with the government for the allocation process to be seamless.

The Executive Secretary of the Lands Commission, James Dadson, said the commission would continue its engagement with all the families to conclude the allocation process.

“All the plans are ready; the demarcation of the allocations from each family has been done, so what we are going to do is get their leadership to come on board for the allocations, then we can proceed to do land titles for them,” he added.

  • Man arrested in Zabzugu on suspicion of being a terrorist

A 35-year-old foreign national is in the grips of the Zabzugu police on suspicion of being a terrorist.

According to the youth in the town, they have seen some suspicious persons in the town lately.

They say these men, about six of them, pretend to be insane. According to them, they see these same people make calls.

This raised suspicion among the youth because of recent terrorist activities in the sub-region.

One of the suspects was arrested and is currently in custody pending investigations.

The assemblyman for the area, Iddi Yussif narrated the incident to Citi News.

“On Monday evening, the youth of Zabzugu were alarmed by the presence of some unknown persons in the town. They got hold of one of thema man, who is said to be from Chad. According to residents, the man paraded himself as insane all this while. The youth were alarmed when they saw this same man with a phone. As soon as he realised he had been seen, he threw away the phone and run to an elderly person for protection. They claimed he speaks Hausa.”

A resident also spoke to Citi News about the incident.

“I was from the farm when I saw people gathered at a spot. We went closer and were told that the suspicious man had rushed to the elderly for protection. The youth said they saw him making a phone call, something they thought was suspicious. How can a mad man be making phones? You know this time the insecurity in the subregion is serious, and we have to be conscious.”

“We have seen other strange people around lately. We have been on the lookout since then, only to see this happen. The National Security should be on high alert.”

  • Well never accept the most corrupt institution tag IGP

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare says, his outfit will continue to reject the research survey portraying the the Ghana police service as the most corrupt institution in the country.

Speaking at a public lecture at KNUST, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare stated that the methodology that led to the research conclusion is marred with several challenges.

Admitting that the police force has a few bad apples amongst them, Dr Akuffo Dampare noted that measures have been put in place to prevent corruption in the police service as part of its transformation agenda.

“We decided to access ourselves from your perspectives. We have been tagged as unprofessional, corrupt and what have you. We are not denying that we may have some recalcitrant officers amongst us, we are doing all we can to pluck them out. But we will never accept that we are the most corrupt institution.”

“It is unfortunate, all those researches are questionable. They have challenges,” he added.

Separate survey reports released by the Ghana Statistical Service and its partners, as well as Afrobarometer report, had officials of the service topping the corruption list.

According to the Afrobarometer study undertaken by the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), 65 percent of Ghanaians believe most police are corrupt, while 31 percent believe only some police are corrupt.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and religious leaders were ranked as the most trusted institutions in the country in the year 2022.

  • Accra-Tema Beach road: Additional GH¢10million paid in compensation

The government has paid an amount of GH¢10 million as additional compensation to some people whose buildings and structures were demolished to make way for phase one of the Accra-Tema Beach Road Expansion Project.

The total amount of compensation paid since the beginning of the project stands at GH¢13.6 million, as GH¢3.6 million had earlier been paid to some property owners along the stretch.

This has enabled work to progress steadily, with about 55 per cent of work having been done on phase one of the project.

Initially, the project was expected to be completed by December this year, but that has been rescheduled to April 2023.

    Payments

The payments, which were made in three tranches, saw 36 individuals receiving amounts ranging from GH¢4,160 to GH¢429,100 in the first two tranches, while the last tranche of payment saw two beneficiaries whose fuel stations were affected receiving GH¢8,016,470 and GH¢1,952,170.

The first tranche of GH¢2,352,100 was paid to 16 property owners, while the second tranche, which amounted to GH¢1,307,280, was paid to 20 property owners.

    Work in progress

Ongoing works include the construction of two bridges and other auxiliary works at the A-Life Junction at Teshie and across the Kpeshie Lagoon at La.

When this reporter toured the stretch of the road, it observed that the single carriageway is taking shape as a dual carriageway.

While there had been some traffic diversions along the stretch to help contractors finish work on the bridge at the A-Life Junction, the Tema-bound side of the bridge had been opened to traffic as of last Wednesday.

    Why the rescheduling?

Tracy Tao, the Administrator of the construction firm handling phase one of the project, China Ganzu International Corporation for Economic and Technical Cooperation (CGICETC), explained that the delay had come about as a result of some difficulties associated with the relocation of utility lines and the demolition of structures within the construction path.

  • Kumasi Customs Division mobilizes GH¢184.5 million as revenue in July

The Ashanti Regional Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) generated a total of GH₵184.5 million as revenue at the end of July 2022.

The amount is out of the total target of GH₵383,913,600.00 for this year.

Mr. Edmund Augustine Omari, Ashanti Regional Sector Commander said the collection was behind the target of the region by 50.1 per cent.

He explained this was due to the inability of the taxpayers to rake in enough income because of the current economic situation in the country.

“The Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Co Ltd (BOST) our major taxpayer, is not making enough,” he explained.

He assured management of working hard to meet the target before the year ends.

Mr Omari, who was speaking at the opening of the 2022 Customs Division Management Retreat in Kumasi, mentioned lack of logistics and personnel as factors impeding the collection of revenues.

The five-day meeting is being held on the theme “Simplification of Customs Procedures in Achieving 2022 Revenue Target”.

The meeting will among other things discuss the GRA risk management structure, simplification of bonds and treaties, overview of terrorism in Africa and its effects on trade (roles and challenges of the Customs Division), trade agreement and its effects on revenue and the role of post clearance audit in revenue mobilization.

The Sector Commander outlining the functions of the Kumasi collection said they ensure that goods that entered, exited or transited their operational areas went through right customs procedures and processes.

They also performed direct export, temporal export, voluntary import compliance, free zones and petroleum functions.

Mr. Omari hinted that plans were far advanced to set up a checkpoint on the Ejura-Kumasi Road, where intelligence gathered confirmed that it had become a major smuggling route in the Ashanti Region.

He, however, assured that the other existing checkpoints located at Kubease, Ahenkro, Mankranso, and Mpasatia in the region would continue to perform their duties effectively.

He mentioned that the checkpoint at Anwiankwanta on the Kumasi-Obuasi road which linked to the Central and Western Regions needed to be relocated.

This was due to the on-going road construction which had affected their day-to-day activities on the stretch.

This is revenue which was described as a nuisance tax… the fact that they (NPP) said they will cancel it…so when my President (Akufo-Addo) describes his predecessor as worst… ”

  • We’ll turn the electricity back on in Krobo once our men feel safe ECG

The Electricity Company of Ghana says it will only restore power at Yilo, Manya Krobo once their men feel safe enough to enter the community.

Residents have been without power for two weeks following a disagreement between the community and ECG over the installation of pre-paid meters.

Speaking on the Point of View on Citi TV, the Public Relations Officer of ECG for the Tema Region, Sakyiwa Mensah explained why the ECG decided to disconnect the entire community and not individuals resisting the installation.

“It was mainly for safety reasons. By safety, we mean our workers felt threatened. Also, the life and property of consumers within the enclave were at risk. We were working on restoring the power. While at it, we realized that some consumers had on their own started connecting to transformers in other communities which had light. This was done with careless abandon. They did not know the extent of possible damage their actions could cause.”

“They even connected to high tension poles as well. This is an unauthorized entry into the network, and we consider it as illegal. We wanted to monitor what they had done to know how quickly to resolve the interference. Our staff and some military men went to Kwahu North and some residents started pelting stones at them. We had fibre cables cut in some places. Some of our men went to check this and were threatened by residents. They were forced to leave.”

She further explained that because of the interferences in connection done by some residents, the company was concerned about the safety of the power that would get to the end-user.

“Our mandate is to as much as possible provide safe electricity. We could provide the power, but what if we end up causing fire in 15 homes at a go?”

“We should note that we are not forcing anyone to accept the meters.“

Residents have had a long-standing dispute with the power distribution company over supposed wrong estimation of bills and over-billing, which resulted in the death of a young man during a similar protest two years ago.

They contend that the installation of prepaid meters will not be any better and they want a direct supply of power from the Volta River Authority (VRA).

  • Accra-Kumasi airfare crosses GH¢600 mark – Report

The surge in airfares has been attributed to the rising cost of aviation fuel, cedi depreciation

The cost of travelling from the capital Accra to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region by air has crossed the GH¢600 mark, the highest one-way fare recorded on the route, Aviation Ghana reports.

For several weeks now, an Accra-Kumasi one-way ticket on Africa World Airlines (AWA) and PassionAir has crossed the GHC600 mark, with about GH¢ 1,200 required to make an Accra-Kumasi-Accra round trip.

On the Accra-Tamale-Accra and Accra-Takoradi-Accra routes, passengers now require close to GH¢ 1,400 to make a round trip from Accra to the two cities.

The surge in airfares has been attributed to the rising cost of aviation fuel on the international market, the depreciation of the local currency against the US dollar—which is the main currency used by airlines for the purchasing of spare parts and others—and the limited number of domestic airline operators.

In Ghana, which imports all of its aviation fuel despite being an oil-producing nation in Africa, jet fuel is selling for about US$1.2 per liter, reflecting the cost of the commodity on the international market.

Jet fuel price average for 2022 (year to date) is $143.4/bbl, according to data published by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

On the international market, jet fuel prices ended last week up 3.4% at $143.0/bbl.

“Mind you, my son is nine years and he is a Muslim. I got married to a Muslim; that should tell you that I know what I’m doing.

I’ve known the Islamic religion for years, and most of my friends are Muslims. I have a lot of Muslim friends so I love Muslims and the Islamic religion.

She then continued to say that she will still remain sexy and be her self despite the fact that she has converted. As Sexy Poloo, you will see me go sexy. I will cover myself in clothes but the sexy body will be exposed.

According to Poloo “there is no difference” between her former and current religion.

“As-Salaam-Alaikum, Alhamdulillah, a lot of people have been wondering with regards to the news they heard about me converting from Christianity to Islam or being a Muslim.

“Some are saying that I did that to impress a man or someone. Some say I was forced. I didn’t sleep at all this night, see my eyes… They didn’t let me sleep, a lot of calls from outside Ghana and my family.

She continued: “Those insulting me on my page on how to dress, I just got converted into Islam and I am an actress, I do promo and adverts for people, I will make sure I cover up so I don’t expose my body a lot but hey, this is sexy Poloo.”

She again indicated that in due time, she will add her new adopted Muslim name to her official name.

“My Mallam told me that I can keep my full name on social media and keep my stage name as ‘Sexy Poloo’ but I will just add my Muslim name to it,” she stated in the video shared on August 10, 2022.

  • US Senate passes sweeping climate, tax and healthcare package

The bill seeks to lower the cost of some medicines, increase corporate taxes and reduce carbon emissions.

The passing of the bill – a flagship part of President Joe Biden’s agenda – is a boost ahead of mid-term elections.

But it is a significantly scaled-back version of the $3.5tn package that was first proposed by his administration.

The bill, a product of 18 months of intense wrangling, passed by a margin of 51 to 50 on Sunday with Vice-President Kamala Harris casting the deciding vote. It was previously blocked by two Democratic senators who shared Republican concerns about its cost.

It will now be sent to the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives, where it is expected to pass in a vote on Friday before the president can sign it into law.

The Inflation Reduction Act includes legislation that would allow the government to negotiate lower prices for prescription medicines provided under its Medicare health insurance programme for those aged over 65.

That is expected to save hundreds of billions of dollars over the next decade, according to estimates from the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.

The package also includes a minimum 15% tax on most corporations that make more than $1bn a year in profits. That measure, an issue of contention during negotiations in Congress, is opposed by business groups who argue it will limit investment.

The bill also includes $369bn for climate action – the largest investment in the issue in US history.

Some households could receive up to $7,500 in tax credits to buy an electric car, or $4,000 for a used car. Billions will also be spent in an effort to speed up the production of clean technology such as solar panels and wind turbines.

There will also be $60bn given to communities that have suffered the most from fossil fuel pollution.

The authors of the bill say it will cut the country’s carbon emissions by 40% by 2030.

The action on climate comes as the US experiences a wave of extreme weather, including a recent heatwave as well as deadly flooding in Kentucky that left dozens dead. President Biden visited flood-damaged areas of the state on Monday.

Many factors contribute to flooding, but a warming atmosphere caused by climate change makes extreme rainfall more likely.

The world has already warmed by about 1.1C since the industrial era began and temperatures will keep rising unless governments around the world make steep cuts to emissions.

Democratic Senate majority leader Chuck SchumerImage source, Getty Images
Image caption, Democratic Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer said lawmakers were “making history”

Democratic Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer said: “After more than a year of hard work, the Senate is making history. To Americans who’ve lost faith that Congress can do big things, this bill is for you.”

Senator Brian Schatz, a Democrat from Hawaii, reportedly cried tears of joy as he left the chamber. “Now I can look my kid in the eye and say we’re really doing something about the climate,” he said, according to the New York Times.

Some Republicans have said they will try to stall or block the progress of the bill.

Florida’s Republican Senator Marco Rubio argued it was out of touch as it did not help to lower prices for working people or keep criminals in jail – “the things working people in this country care about”.

On Saturday, Congress debated a revised version of the bill, after compromises on the more ambitious original plan were agreed with two key Democratic holdouts, Senators Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona.

Mr Manchin had feared the original bill would have exacerbated inflation.

President Biden – who has called the bill “historic” – has pledged to return the US to the international stage on climate action. In April last year, he pledged to slash greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2030.

Last month, he announced $2.2bn to help build infrastructure that can withstand extreme weather and natural disasters.

The US is back in the climate battle

Analysis box by Justin Rowlatt, climate editor

This isn’t the all-singing, all-dancing climate mega-bill Joe Biden promised when he became president – but if it passes it will be the most ambitious action the US has taken to try to stop the planet overheating.

And the indirect impact could be even more consequential.

President Biden’s climate envoy, John Kerry, has been tireless in his efforts to persuade other countries to raise their ambitions on climate change.

But the US faced a credibility gap.

“You can’t preach temperance from a bar stool,” is how one Democratic senator put it.

What he means is you can’t ask India, China or Brazil to cut emissions unless you are doing so yourself.

That’s still a very big ask, and things are particularly strained with China right now. Beijing said it is halting co-operation over climate change following senior Democrat Nancy Pelosi’s recent trip to Taiwan.

But with the US leading by example, the hope is that international efforts to tackle global warming will be revitalised.

  • US invests $280bn in high tech to compete with China

US President Joe Biden has signed a law committing $280bn (£232bn) to high tech manufacturing and scientific research amid fears the country is losing its technological edge to China.

Business groups have long pushed for more government support, citing the need to reduce reliance on China.

Top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer said the bill was a “game changer” that would ensure American leadership and prosperity in the next century.

“Authoritarians were cheering for us to lose and hoping we sit on our hands,” he said. “By enacting the CHIPS and Science Act we are making clear we believe another great American century lies on the horizon.”

The US currently produces roughly 10% of the global supply of semiconductors, which are key to everything from cars to mobile phones, down from nearly 40% in 1990.

The country is not alone in its investments in the industry.

The European Union this spring said it would commit more than €40bn to boost production of computer chips, while China has also been boosting its investments in science and technology.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington had opposed the semiconductor bill, calling it reminiscent of a “Cold War mentality.”

In addition to the chip investments, the bill directs about $200bn to agencies such as the National Science Foundation, aiming to boost investments in fields like robotics and wireless communications.

Mr Biden called it a “once in a generation” investment and said it was already yielding growth in the US, pointing to plans from Micron to spend $40bn on memory chip manufacturing, a project expected to create 40,000 jobs.

It is the latest accomplishment for the White House, which also recently clinched a deal to advance a sweeping plan to combat climate change.

Unlike that plan, which was opposed by Republicans, this bill was supported by both parties, despite marking a large expansion of the role of the US government into a domain often left to the private sector.

  • Energy bills forecast to hit over £4,200 a year

Energy bills for a typical household could hit £4,266 next year, consultancy Cornwall Insight has warned.Energy bills: Charities warn people against not paying

The higher estimate means the average household would be paying £355 a month, instead of £164 a month currently.

Cornwall cited regulator Ofgem’s decision to change the price cap every three months instead of six and higher wholesale prices for its high forecast.

But Ofgem said no forecast for next year could be “robust” at this stage and had “limited value”.

Cornwall expects this to rise to £3,582 a year, compared to the regulator’s prediction of £2,800 a year.

Dr Craig Lowrey, principal consultant at Cornwall, said its price cap forecasts had been steadily rising but the big jump was “a fresh shock”.

The energy bill warning comes as the government rejected calls for further help on energy bills until a new prime minister was in place.

The CBI business lobby group said it “made no sense to wait” for a new Conservative party leader.

Regulator Ofgem warned wholesale prices were moving so quickly that future forecasts were not reliable.

“We cannot stop others from making predictions, but we would ask that extreme caution is applied to any predictions for the price cap in January or beyond.”

Earlier this month, the government announced how households in England, Scotland and Wales will receive £400 to help with rising fuel bills this autumn, with the money paid in six instalments.

But Dr Lowrey called on the government to use the latest predictions of higher bills to review the support package.

“If the £400 was not enough to make a dent in the impact of our previous forecast, it most certainly is not enough now.

“The government must make introducing more support over the first two quarters of 2023 a number-one priority.”

    Hannah AbsalomImage source, Hannah Absalom
Image caption, Hannah Absalom has been stocking up on thermal clothing ahead of winter.

Hannah Absalom, a PHD student in Birmingham, lives on £850 per month in a one-bed flat and has spent £80 already on thermal clothing and a heated blanket so she can avoid heating her home in winter.

“I’m doing everything I can but there’s not enough support. I’ll more than likely end up in debt, or eat into my buffer savings – saved for getting a job,” she says.

Supermarket head office worker Stuart Lane, 47, who lives in Buckinghamshire with his wife and their three children, currently pays £100 a month for a fixed price deal. but that ends in September.

“When I looked at getting a new deal, the only fixed prices was pushing up to £420. We will be having to look at our outgoings,” he says.

Sylvia Simpson, chief executive at debt help charity Money Buddies in Leeds, told the BBC there were limited options for helping people with soaring energy bills: “The tools that we used to have before, for example, for switching utility providers to get the best deal – that has gone now. There is no switching to get the best deal anymore.

    “People are really, really struggling.”

    Energy price cap forecast graphic

Conservative leadership candidate Rishi Sunak has said he would provide more money to help people with their energy bills, if he becomes prime minister.

His rival for the leadership, Liz Truss, has pledged tax cuts to help people hit by cost of living increases.

But Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey has suggested that the government should scrap the energy price cap rise in October, which he said would save the typical household £1,400 this year.

Mr Davey said the cost of the plan – which the party puts at nearly £36bn – could be funded through backdating the windfall tax on oil and gas companies’ profits.

    Lower bills

Dr Lowry said that without the more frequent changes to the price cap, more energy suppliers might be in danger of collapse – though he questioned whether it should exist at all.

“If it is not controlling consumer prices, and is damaging suppliers’ business models, we must wonder if it is fit for purpose – especially in these times of unprecedented energy market conditions,” he said.

However, if wholesale prices remain at current rates, it expects lower bills in the second half of next year than it had previously forecast.

The energy price cap sets a limit on the amount that can be paid for each unit of energy. It is based on the price energy suppliers pay producers for electricity and gas.

This has risen sharply, fuelled by the war in Ukraine which has threatened supplies from Russia.

Many families are already facing soaring costs, with UK inflation – the rate at which prices are rising – at the highest in 40 years.

Woman using an electric kettleImage source, Getty Images

The Don’t Pay group, which is demanding bills be reduced to to an affordable level, says tens of thousands of people have pledged to cancel their direct debit payments from 1 October.

However, charities have said not paying energy bills has very serious consequences for consumers, including being threatened with disconnection and damage to their credit rating.

The warning comes as the government dismissed reports of disruption to energy supplies, following reports that plans for a “reasonable worst case scenario” included organised blackouts for firms and households.

A source told the BBC that such scenarios are “made up” and “extreme” so that the government’s response can be tested.

    2px presentational grey line
Analysis box by Dharshini David, global trade correspondent

Predictions of January energy bills were already sending shivers down spines, as the wholesale prices suppliers have to pay spiked due a fear of Russia withholding gas supplies.

But it’s partly a technical tweak that’s caused those estimates to jump by another 10% in just a few days.

At present, suppliers are often having to buy energy at a higher price to meet the needs of customers. But those customers, under the cap, may be paying a lower tariff.

The regulator, under new plans, is allowing suppliers to recoup those extra costs from customers over the space of six months, a shorter period than previously thought.

It’s not just about protecting profits; 28 suppliers have already folded in the last couple of years, leaving customers to pick up a tab £2.7bn, nearly £100 per household, due to their failures. On top of that, over £1bn of taxpayer funds are expected to be needed to deal with the largest collapse, that of Bulb.

The idea is to protect customers from the cost of future failures. But in the short term, it could mean devastating choices in the depths of winter.

And the extra help currently on offer from both Tory leadership hopefuls is unlikely to offset even the increase in the estimate unveiled today.

  • US inflation eases in July as petrol prices drop

Prices in the US continued to rise rapidly last month, but a fall in petrol costs helped to ease the pace.

The annual inflation rate, the pace at which prices rise, was 8.5% in July, down from June when it surged to 9.1%, the Labor Department said.

Aside from energy, costs for many items, including groceries and housing, continued to climb.

The higher costs have left many families struggling and had a significant impact on the economy.

Jobs growth remains strong, but other indicators, like consumer and business sentiment, have been hit by worries about rising prices, which are climbing faster than they have since the early 1980s.

Over the last 12 months, prices for groceries in the US have jumped 13.1%, the largest annual increase since 1979. Rising coffee prices helped push those costs higher in July, surging 3.5% just since June.

Prices for housing, medical care and recreation were also up from June, but the gains were offset by declines for items such as used cars, airfares and clothing.

Petrol prices fell by 7.7% compared with June, when prices at the pump had hit a record high of more than $5 per gallon on average.

Overall the report was better than many analysts had expected.

“This is not yet the meaningful decline in inflation [the US central bank] is looking for. But it’s a start and we expect to see broader signs of easing price pressures over the next few months,” said Paul Ashworth, chief US economist at Capital Economics.

Prices in the US have been rising rapidly since last year, driven higher by a mix of forces, including strong demand from consumers, whose spending was supported by Covid-19 cheques from the government.

At the same time, pandemic-related shutdowns in China, the war in Ukraine and other issues have strained supplies of goods, including necessities such as oil and wheat.

‘Salaries aren’t going up as fast’

    Aquinnah Rank

    Image caption, Aquinnah Rank

As food prices jump, Aquinnah Rank says she has started buying less expensive store brand versions of items like cereal and is buying fewer non-essentials, like cookies.

While the drop in gasoline prices has provided some relief, the 21-year-old student from Massachusetts, who is working this summer in a restaurant, is concerned about finding a job when she graduates from university in May that will pay enough to cover the fast-climbing cost of groceries and rent.

“Salaries aren’t necessarily going up as fast, so that’s definitely a worry,” she says.

    2px presentational grey line

The US central bank has been raising interest rates since March to try to stabilise prices.

Increasing interest rates is one way to try to control inflation as it makes borrowing more expensive and should encourage people to borrow and spend less, reducing the demand driving up prices.

But because higher interest rates reduce economic activity, the bank risks tipping the economy into a prolonged downturn, or recession. Last month, the US Commerce Department reported that the economy shrank in the April-June period, the second quarter in a row of decline.

Expectations of slowdown in the US and abroad are part of the reason why oil prices have fallen in recent weeks, in turn leading to lower gasoline costs for consumers.

Silvia Dall’Angelo, senior economist at Federated Hermes, said she expected demand to cool further in coming months, as the bank’s rate hikes took hold and continued high prices prompted consumers to reduce their spending.

“This, together with stabilisation in energy prices and a gradual easing of global supply constraints, should drive inflation down more quickly over the course of next year,” she said.

But she added: “While the Fed will draw some comfort from today’s inflation report, the fight against high inflation is far from over.”

  • Ghana’s boxing is gaining international attention; more investment is needed- GBF President

President of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF), Bernard Quartey has stated that  boxing is what popularizes Ghana, hence more investment is required for the sport.

On Monday, August 9, the 2022 Commonwealth Games came to an end, with Team Ghana taking home five medals.

Three out of the five medals won by Team Ghana were from Boxing.

Wahid Omar won bronze, and Joseph Commey and Abraham Mensah also picked up silver medals from their respective boxing events.

Bernard Quartey speaking in an interview with the media said, if more money is invested in boxing, in some years to come, more medals would be won.

“People keep saying that football is the passion of the nation to which I disagree because we do not invest in the boxing fraternity.

“All the money is invested into football and if a fraction was invested into boxing, we would be doing a lot for the country.”

The GBF President added: “We are not going to relax; we are not going to say that because we have taken silver and bronze we are going to relax. No!

“Work still continues and I can tell you that we have what it takes to bring more medals.”
