  • Asante Kotoko in talks with coach Prosper Ogum to reverse his decision

Asante Kotoko has refused to accept the shock resignation of coach  Dr.Prosper Narteh Ogum.

Ghanasoccernet.com understands the Porcupine Warriors’ management is in talks with Ogum to reverse his decision and continue to lead the club.

Kotoko supporters, who have been shocked by the news, are hoping that management can persuade Ogum not to leave.

Ogum, who won the Ghana Premier League with Kotoko last season, tendered his resignation on Wednesday afternoon after a meeting with the technical committee of the Board and Management.

In a sensational turn of events, Ogum has quit the job, barely three weeks before the start of the club’s pre-season activities kicks in.

Oyerepa FM’s Eugene Adu Poku is reporting that the Ghana Premier League winner has left his role at the club after a meeting with the top brass of the Ghanaian giants.

Details are sketchy but sources say the gaffer is unhappy with the club’s transfer activity ahead of next season and more crucially their involvement in the CAF Champions League.

The club has lost three key players- Mudasiru Salifu, Fabio Gama and Kwame Baah have all left the record Ghanaian champions.

The tension between the coach and the management team appears to have reached the apex – leading to the decision of the University professor to part ways with the African powerhouse.

The team is expected to start preparations for the upcoming season by participating in the Ghalca off-season competition- the G6 in Kumasi next month.

  • ‘Never doubt yourself’ – Bronze’s letter to herself

Before England’s thrilling quarter-final win against Spain, Lionesses defender Lucy Bronze wrote a letter to herself.

This is what she had to say.

As I talk to you now, you’re an eight-year-old girl. You won’t realise right now how lucky you are to have the family you have.

It’s something that you probably take for granted until you get older, and realise the hardship that other people have, but your family is the best.

Any dream that you have your mum will make sure that that dream comes true, and she’ll make sure that your dad does it as well.

Your brother will support you in a very funny way by pushing you, challenging you and never letting you win. Always making sure you’re the most competitive version of yourself. And your sister, although she is very shy, is very proud of you.

You’re now a 12-year-old girl and you’ve had your first taste of what women’s football really looks like. You get to see these superstars who are idols to you now. You see how successful they are, you see how much they inspire girls like yourself and it’s the first time you realise that you could be a superstar as well.

Never doubt yourself. These role models are there for a reason, and they’re the people that you will become.

You’re now in your early 20s. You’ve signed your first professional contract at Liverpool. Although there’s not much support, there’s not much backing, you back yourself more than anybody.

You come off the back of finishing your degree, working in Domino’s, working at five-a-side places pulling pints, some of the best times of your life to be honest, because you learned how to graft and work hard and you realise that nothing comes easy. But you know that your time is about to come.

You get your first major injury. People are starting to say that they’re not going to pick you any more. That you’re not good enough. You have no support apart from the family that love you so much.

Your rehab goes wrong, you get injured again. You feel like nothing is going right for you at this moment. There are some nights where you cry alone, but just know that these are the days that are going to push you even harder, because for every step that you take backwards, you take two leaps forward in the end.

You’re off to your second major tournament, in Canada in 2015. The manager has sat you down before the tournament and said ‘you’re going to be a squad player but if called upon you know you’ll be ready’.

Then comes the first knockout game, and you’re on the teamsheet ahead of Alex Scott for the first time ever. And funnily enough, Alex is the one that tells you in training ‘Lucy, why don’t you shoot more?’

You score the winning goal to send England through, everybody knows your name. This moment changes your life forever.

Here we are today. We’ve broken so many records as a team, you’ve hit the heights that you always thought you could hit. You’re part of a home Euros like no other and everybody is full of confidence.

The next thing that we need to do is get ourselves to the final, and that is the missing step that you know that you need to take.

You never know what the future is going to hold, but right now you couldn’t be happier with what you’ve already achieved, so let’s go and achieve some more.

  • ‘Only 1% of private sector workers contribute to SSNIT’ – SSNIT boss

The Director-General of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Dr. John Ofori-Tenkorang has revealed that only one percent of private sector workers contribute to SSNIT in Ghana.

According to him, 11.5 million workers are in Ghana but only 1.7million are active SSNIT contributors.

He said 63% of workers are in the private sector while 36% are Public sector workers but only one percent of private sector workers contribute to the SSNIT Pension Scheme.

He made this revelation when the management of the SSNIT, held a meeting with stakeholders to find ways of expanding and deepening coverage of the Basic National Social Security Scheme to self-employed workers.

The meeting, held in Accra, sought stakeholder buy-in and support to extend the coverage of the SSNIT Scheme to the self-employed and workers in the informal sector.

He stressed that this low coverage is attributed to the nature of the economy of the country, where most people are engaged in their own businesses and do not see the need to enroll in a structured social security scheme.

  • Over 15.7 million Ghana cards issued so far NIA boss

More than 15.7 million eligible citizens have received their Ghana Cards since the registration exercise started in 2019, the Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Prof. Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah, has disclosed.

Prof. Agyemang Attafuah, giving a breakdown of the total number of registered cards, stated that 16,969,034 persons have registered for the Ghana Card, with about 16,535,623 cards printed.

He further indicated that out of the 16,969,034 printed cards, 808,493 Ghanaians have not been issued with their Ghana Cards.

The NIA boss stated that the non-issuance of the Ghana Card is not a deliberate attempt to frustrate the Ghanaian people.

Prof. Attafuah ascribed double-registration, change of vital data as the cause of non-issued Ghana Cards.

He disclosed that, “there are people who have double-registered. That is potentially a criminal offence. Those ones are being individually investigated. There are those whose cards have gone into adjudication, not because of double registration but because they have sought to change their vital data in the custody of the authority, such as bio-data. For such people, the system arrests their application, and it joins a queue.”

The NIA boss touted that until the outstanding issues are rectified, some Ghanaians can not receive their cards.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Card is the sole identification document being used for the SIM card re-registration exercise nationwide. The exercise which commenced on October 1, 2021, is expected to end July 31, 2022.

Earlier, the Government extended the deadline for the registration of SIM from March, 31st 2022 to 31st July 2022 due to the low number of SIM card registration recorded.

Government has insisted on not extending the deadline, therefore, citizens who fail to comply with the directive before the deadline will have their SIM cards deactivated.

  • Top spokeswoman for Nevada Republican Senate nominee marched on Jan. 6 with Oath Keepers, including one charged with sedition

The new communications director for the Republican Senate nominee in Nevada — a key state that could determine control in Washington — marched to the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, with two members of the far-right extremist group the Oath Keepers including one who was later charged with sedition and another with breaking into the Capitol and at least two others who were charged for illegally entering the building, according to videos reviewed by CNN’s KFile.

Courtney Holland, a Nevada-based political activist who does not appear to have entered the Capitol building herself and has not been charged with crimes related to January 6, was named Adam Laxalt’s top spokeswoman in early July. Laxalt is running against Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto and the race is considered a toss up.

Holland traveled to Washington, DC, for the January 6, 2021, “Stop the Steal” rally where she was listed as a speaker for a rally to be held near the Capitol following then-President Donald Trump’s speech near the White House. That second rally did not take place as scheduled. She had previously spoken at a November event in Washington, DC, and was photographed with several “Stop the Steal” organizers who also spoke. The “Stop the Steal” movement believes Trump’s lies that the 2020 election was stolen from him.

Early on the morning of January 6, Holland walked with a group to the main rally, which featured Trump, according to a video in a since-deleted tweet on her account archived on the Internet Wayback Machine. The group included three other speakers listed for the rally near the Capitol.

Following Trump’s rally, Holland was part of a group that now-included four other scheduled speakers for the second rally that made their way toward the Capitol guided by three Oath Keepers, according to videos and photos reviewed by CNN’s KFile. Holland said in a statement to CNN on Tuesday that she did not know the men, describing them as “security.” Two of those Oath Keepers, Kenneth Harrelson and Jason Dolan, have since been charged by the Department of Justice for their role in the Capitol attack. Also walking with Holland was Dr. Simone Gold, an anti-vaccine doctor who pleaded guilty in March to entering the Capitol and was recently sentenced to 60 days in jail, and John Strand, a co-defendant in her case who has pleaded not guilty.

There is no indication Holland herself entered the Capitol. Pictures posted by amateur sleuths last year tracking Capitol rioters appear to show Holland in a restricted area in front of the Capitol. Holland later repeatedly downplayed the attack, retweeting false claims suggesting the riot was the work of the far-left group Antifa and a tweet calling the protest “the largest civil rights protest in history.”

Holland told CNN in her Tuesday statement that she went to Washington expecting to attend a “peaceful gathering.” She said she did not know the Oath Keepers who led her to the second “Stop the Steal” event that was supposed to take place near the Capitol. Holland said she has never been subpoenaed, questioned, or accused of wrongdoing and called the riot “an unfortunate day in our country’s history.”

“Like thousands of others I attended the event, with expectations of a peaceful gathering. Event organizers asked me and many others to speak at a permitted area behind the Capitol and provided us with what we were told was event security, who we did not know, to reach the area. Upon reaching the permitted area, I became aware that the situation was deteriorating and decided to leave the Capitol complex to return to my hotel. I intended to speak at a peaceful rally, similar to a previous event held in November. Once it became clear what was happening, I left,” Holland said.

    Guided by far-right militia members

Videos on social media and YouTube show Holland marching to the Capitol with her hand on Harrelson’s shoulder. The group appears to be led at points by an unidentified man in a blue blazer wearing an Oath Keepers sweatshirt. The group walked in a “stack” formation that the Department of Justice said the Oath Keepers used to move through crowds on January 6, 2021.

The FBI explained the Oath Keepers’ use of stack formations in a criminal complaint against Harrelson, which does not reference Holland or her group’s walk to the Capitol. “One defining feature of this formation is that members keep their hands on the backs or vests of the person in front of them to remain together while entering a room or weaving through a crowd,” they wrote in the complaint, which includes a photo of a different group of Oath Keepers marching in that formation outside of the Capitol building. “The purpose of maintaining direct physical contact with one another is to efficiently communicate with one another, especially in crowded or noisy areas.”

One video — from the amateur sleuth YouTube account “Hunting Insurrectionists,” which was verified by CNN’s KFile by watching the original videos — tracking their group’s march to the Capitol shows Holland walking from behind with her hand on an Oath Keeper’s shoulder that appears to be Harrelson as someone yells, “make a hole ladies and gentlemen,” for their group to pass. Strand can also briefly be seen talking to Gold. Another YouTube video shows Harrelson, Gold and Strand all marching together with Holland. Dolan appears at the front of the group as well.

Harrelson was charged by the Department of Justice for a number of actions related to breaking into the Capitol, and later he was also charged with sedition. Dolan was also charged by the Department of Justice with five counts related to the Capitol riot, but three of his charges were dropped as part of a plea agreement that included cooperation with the government. Dolan pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy and one count of obstruction of an official proceeding.

The documents outlining evidence against Dolan noted both Oath Keepers traveled to Washington together and were frequently together before and during the Capitol riot. It alleged both men brought weapons to the area that they left in Virginia. Dolan’s indictment from the Department of Justice makes reference to his march from the event near the White House.

Numerous members of the Oath Keepers have been charged for their roles breaking into the Capitol building. Last week, the Justice Department released new details that alleged extensive planning by the Oath Keepers to prepare for violence in Washington, DC, on January 6, 2021, including lessons to conduct “hasty ambushes,” a “death list” of Georgia election officials and attempts to acquire homemade firearms.

Holland’s exact movements after getting to the Capitol are unclear.

The group appeared to have made it to the east side of the Capitol, where the second rally was supposed to take place. One video, released by the Department of Justice to news organizations in the case against Harrelson, shows a cell phone video shot by the Oath Keeper on the east side of the Capitol with several members of the stack formation together, including what seems to be Holland.

One video appears to show her on the northwest side of the Capitol building with several members of her group, but not the Oath Keepers. A video from a since-deleted tweet also shows her at the east side of the Capitol near where the video shot by Harrelson was taken.

Following the riot and aftermath, Holland said in since-deleted tweets she would still stand up for Trump.

“Last time I checked the Constitution it said ‘We the People’ not ‘We the Government,’” she said just after the attack, and added in another tweet, “I’m still not giving up on fighting for Trump.”

A year later, Holland maintained on Instagram the riot was “not an insurrection.”

  • Two suspects arrested over $1.6M wine heist at Spanish hotel

Spanish police have detained a pair of professional thieves accused of stealing more than $1.6 million worth of wine from a hotel in the south of the country.

The man and woman evaded capture for almost nine months before being arrested on the Montenegro-Croatia border on Tuesday for stealing 45 bottles of wine from the Atrio restaurant in Cáceres, western Spain, according to a statement from Spain’s national police.

The total value of the stolen wine was €1,648,500 (around $1.68 million) and one individual bottle was valued at €310,000, said police.

The heist took place on October 27, 2021 and was planned in “minute detail,” with the thieves visiting the restaurant three times to prepare the raid, said officers.

The suspects “showed a high level of professionalism, specialization and perfect planning,” added the police statement.

Investigators found that the woman booked into the Atrio hotel using a fake Swiss document, and had dinner in the restaurant with her male accomplice.

Both suspects were then given a tour of the wine cellar by staff, which is a common occurrence, according to police.

They then went up to their hotel room together, but the man left a few moments later and returned to the cellar.

He got in using a stolen master key, and left a few minutes later with three large rucksacks filled with stolen wine, stuffed with hotel towels to cushion the bottles.

While he was stealing the wine, the woman distracted staff by asking for some food to be prepared, police said, despite the fact that the kitchen was already closed.

Staff noticed the missing bottles the next morning, but the suspects had left the premises at around 5 a.m.

The thieves left Spain a few days after the heist and moved around various European countries, making it difficult for agents to pinpoint their exact location, said police.

But authorities finally caught up with them entering Croatia from Montenegro at the Karasovi Sutorina border crossing.

Spanish police hailed the “perfect coordination” between national and international investigators from authorities including Interpol.

At the time of his arrest the male suspect had two more warrants outstanding from a court in Madrid, said police.

The most valuable bottle was an 1806 Château D’Yquem, José Polo, co-owner and sommelier of the restaurant, told Decanter magazine in November 2021.

Polo said he would buy back the stolen bottles from the thieves, in particular the 1806 Château D’Yquem.

  • It is cheaper and reliable to use train, patronize our services – Ghana Railway Company

The Ghana Railway Company has asked Ghanaians, especially those who ply the Tema-Accra stretch, to consider using the train.

The Accra-Tema passenger train service resumed on Monday, July 18, full operations after it was temporarily suspended for rehabilitation.

The Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL), was granted the approval to commence the shuttle service by the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA).

The approval was granted after the Company successfully addressed some technical challenges, conducted a series of test runs and carried out a final joint inspection on July 7 to ascertain the suitability of the passenger service.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, the Public Relations Officer for the Ghana Railway Company, Randy Mould, said it is far cheaper to use the train compared to the commercial buses of troski.

He said, “Using the train cheaper. From Tema to Accra will cost you about Ghc12 when you use commercial buses. But when you use the train, you will pay between Ghc 4-7. If you compare the two, you will realise that the train is relatively cheaper”.

  • Most Ghanaians are not financially disciplined – Prof. Adei suggests

The ex-chairman of the National Development Planning Commission, Professor Emeritus Stephen Adei, has suggested that most Ghanaians are not financially disciplined.

Prof. Adei indicated that average Ghanaians are more interested in showing off their wealth by buying excess clothes and having more clothing than millionaires in western countries like the late Steve Jobs who owned only four pairs of jeans, graphic.com.gh reports.

He, therefore, urged Ghanaians to learn to avoid wasting their monies on unnecessary acquisitions including excess clothes.

“… limit the price of financial success… In other words, don’t make certain sacrifices, that is financial discipline, not wasting your money.

“The average Ghanaian has more clothing than a millionaire in America, yes…” Prof. Adei is quoted to have said at the Springboard Your Virtual University show.

Also, Prof. Adei said that it is wrong for people to prioritise wealth over having good relationships.

“Getting rich at the expense of personal integrity, a good marriage, family life, fellowship and friendship only makes you a rich fool,” he added.

  • Harrison Afful: 35-year-old defender hailed for impressive performance against Chelsea

Harrison Afful shone brightly in a pre-season friendly against Chelsea on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old Ghanaian assisted Charlotte FC in winning 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 tie in regulation time.

The right-back’s performance drew praise from Ghanaians, who were overjoyed to see the experienced defender in action.

Afful was one of the best players for the US club in the match, keeping Chelsea’s new boy Raheem Sterling at bay.

The England international was so impressed by the Ghanaian that he willingly swapped shirts with Afful after the game.

Despite his club consistency, Afful has not played for the Black Stars in four years. His last appearance was in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ethiopia in 2018.

He has not, however, announced his retirement from the Black Stars and is hoping to return in time for the 2022 World Cup in Qata.

  • Zebilla guinea fowl hawkers decry low patronage

Guinea fowl hawkers at the Zebilla barrier in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region have decried low patronage of their wares in recent times.

Although guinea fowls from Zebilla have been tagged as the most “preferred and delicious,” these hawkers lamented in separate interviews with the Ghanaian Times that they sold little to nothing in a day in the past months and that was very disturbing as it was their only source of livelihood.

The paper in its visit to the place last Saturday, around 1:30pm, observed that these hawkers sat idly behind their wares waiting for customers, passers-by, and vehicles to quickly attend to.

Hawked by women, these guinea fowls were displayed openly in pans and wooden trays to attract patrons.

These hawkers were also spotted calling out to passers-by and rushing to vehicles to attract customers for patronage.

The fowls which were in half and full were sold between GH¢30 and GH¢80 either roasted or fried. They came with red powdered pepper and were sold with fried yam.

Linda Mbii who said she had not sold anything yet at the time the Ghanaian Times visited said sales had been that way for some time.

She indicated that the prices of the guinea fowl ranged from GH¢30 to about GH¢70 and that the prices had risen as a result of the constant hikes in petroleum products and their attendant impact on commodity prices.

Mrs. Mbii said that was the only business she had operated for the past 20 years and was her only source of income.

She explained that Zebilla was the hub for guinea fowl, so people from far and near came to buy in bulk for retailing and wholesaling.

Mrs Mbii called on all who used the barrier to patronise them to sustain their livelihood.

Ms Portia Hamdiya, another hawker, similarly decried the recent fall in the patronage of their meat.

She noted that she could make sales of more than GH¢500 in a day but that was not the case now, as she had not made up to GH¢200 at the time of the interview.

Ms. Hamdiya stated that guinea fowls are ordinarily sold because of their nutritional benefits but they were almost at a loss because of the high cost of living being experienced currently in the country.

She called for a cut in the prices of commodities to help make things affordable for all.

For her part, Aisha Aboku said she was hopeful that patronage would pick up and get better.

She affirmed that she also sold her fowls at the same prices (between GH¢30GH¢70)and believed she was going to make more sales before end of day.

  • Women’s Euro 2022: England beats Spain 2-1 in a dramatic extra-time performance

Trailing Spain 1-0 with six minutes of regular time left, England seemed to be exiting its home Women’s Euro until Ella Toone knocked home an equalizer that lifted a raucous, record crowd of 28,994 spectators inside the Brighton and Hove Community Stadium to their feet and dragged the quarterfinal to extra time.

Then, six minutes into the first extra period, Georgia Stanway was given an inch of space by the Spanish defense and fired the Lionesses into the semifinals with a sensational strike that sealed a 2-1 victory.
“That’s the shift from group mentality to knockouts. We’ve proved we’re resilient and can overcome tests,” England’s captain Leah Williamson told the BBC.
“Sorry to Mum and Dad that you have work tomorrow and I’ve delayed you returning home. I’m sorry to the whole nation, but I hope you’re buzzing like me.”
Leah Williamson celebrates her side's victory.

England’s Euro campaign had been flawless, topping its group without conceding a goal and achieving a record victory against Norway.
But Spain’s trademark tiki-taka passing ensured that it dominated the first half, starving the Lionesses of possession and any chance to unleash their free-flowing attack.
On 17 minutes, La Roja engineered its first shot on target as Mariona Caldentey curled in a shot from outside the penalty box which was scooped up by England goalkeeper Mary Earps.
Twenty minutes later, it looked as if Ellen White had scored for England against the run of play, prodding in a goal from a Lauren Hemp free kick, but her effort was ruled offside.
That sparked a late flurry of English attacks, but Spain’s defense held out and the first half ended goalless.
Spain began the second half brightly and took the lead when substitute Athenea del Castillo foiled Rachel Daly, zig-zagged into the box and set up Esther González who fired a goal into the corner of the net.
    Spain celebrates Esther González's goal.

In response, England’s tactics shifted, and head coach Sarina Wiegman brought on Alessia Russo and Toone to stem Spain’s advance.
Earps’ outstretched fingertips deflected a powerful shot from Del Castillo to keep the Lionesses’ hopes alive before Russo and Toone combined on 86 minutes to equalize and push the match to extra time.
“We used Plan B,” Wiegman told the BBC. “We scored quickly after doing that so we could go back into our normal shape. I’m so proud of the team. The fans behind us, you could feel it. This is home advantage.”
After Stanway’s early goal in extra time, Spain continued to threaten but England held on to take a memorable win.
“It’s a disappointing defeat and disappointing to go out of the competition, but if there’s a good way to lose, it’s by playing as we did tonight. We gave everything, but it wasn’t to be. We’ve performed really well and there’s a bright future ahead, but it’s a difficult day for us,” Spain coach Jorge Vilda said, according to UEFA.com.
The Lionesses will now face either Belgium or Sweden for a place in the final.

  • GES to reverse SHS academic calendar to pre-COVID era

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has indicated that the academic calendar for Senior High School students will be restored to the pre-COVID era by 2024.

This will enable WASSCE candidates complete their final exam between May and June, instead of the August-September calendar which is currently being run.

“Though Ghanaian candidates are the only group to sit for exams during this period, they will join their other counterparts in West Africa by 2024,” Director-General of the Service, Prof. Kwasi OpokuAmankwa assured in an interview with Citi News.

Director-General of GES, Prof. Kwasi OpokuAmankwa.

Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, academic work for most schools was distorted. This was due to the lockdown and other measures instituted to curtail the spread of the pandemic.

As a result, the academic calendar was reviewed such that WASSCE candidates who previously wrote their final exam between May and June ended up taking the exam between August and September.

However, the four neigbouring West African Countries – Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone and the Gambia – who also partake in the exam have returned to the May/June calender, leaving only Ghanaian candidates to write the exam between August and September.

  • Americans’ confidence in elections has faded since January 6

(CNN)Most Americans lack confidence that the results of US elections reflect the will of the people, a sentiment that has grown steadily since January 2021, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS.

And about half of Americans, 48%, say they think it is at least somewhat likely that in the next few years, some elected officials will successfully overturn the results of a US election because their party did not win.

Follow-up interviews with people who participated in the poll suggest that the driving factors behind Republicans’ and Democrats’ views on elections are near-opposite. But there is a common thread: Concern.

When asked her outlook on the future of American democracy, Patricia Reasoner, an 83-year-old independent from Vermont, said, “I’m concerned because we came so close this time and we’re not putting enough controls in place to keep it from happening again so far. And if it happens again, I’m afraid it will topple us.”

In January 2021, shortly after the attack on the US Capitol, 59% of Americans said they had at least some confidence that US elections reflected the will of the people. That included 36% who were very confident that elections were representative of the public’s wishes.

Now, a year and a half later, only 42% have some confidence, and just 16% are very confident.

The biggest shifts over that time have come among Democrats and independents, even as Democrats remain the political group most likely to express confidence in American elections. In early 2021, 90% of Democrats said they were at least somewhat confident that elections reflected the will of the people; now, just 57% are. Among independents, the share who have at least some confidence has fallen from 54% to 38%. Among Republicans, by contrast, confidence has modestly increased but remained low, from 23% confident then to 29% now.

Kelly Woodward, a teacher and parent from Denver, where all voters receive mail ballots, said her experience of voting has been largely positive.

“I take both girls when I do it, when I drop off the ballot, and they sit with me as I’m filling it out. I know for my parents, who are older and are both very politically active, it’s very easy for them, which I appreciate, because it would be hard for them to go stand in line.”

But Woodward, a Democrat, has concerns about how well the system works elsewhere. “Even though it works for me, I don’t think it works for everybody, and it shouldn’t be that way in our country. It should be the same for everybody; they should feel that it works for them.”

Some worried that not everyone who should be able to vote actually could. LaRee Smith, a health care worker in Washington state said in an email to CNN, “[M]y biggest concern is not for myself but for voters in states (particularly in the South) where conservatives appear to be ramping up voter suppression and intimidation for citizens in lower socioeconomic classes.”

And Isaac Odibo, a Democrat from Norfolk, Virginia, said the nation’s election system is weaker now because, “a lot of people qualified to vote might be prevented from voting because of all the laws placed and new laws being passed.”

But on the other side, Republicans’ concerns seem rooted in doubts about the last presidential election, even as there has been no evidence of either voter fraud or tampering that would change the results. Despite the lack of evidence, numerous candidates for office and former President Donald Trump continue to push the falsehood that the election was stolen.

Still, Ruben Andres Delgado, a 26-year-old Republican from El Paso, Texas, said of 2020, “Anyone with logic and reasoning could tell you something fishy happened, something illegitimate happened.”

And another survey-taker from Northport, Alabama, who did not wish to be named, said, “There were instances of polls going smoothly and turning in the true vote count. But there were also instances that were claims from viewers and people working the polls that that didn’t take place, so there was a question mark.”

The survey was conducted as the House select committee investigating the January 6 attack on the Capitol held public hearings on its findings.

Woodward has been following the hearings a little bit.

“I just never thought in my lifetime that I would have seen something like January 6,” she said. “I guess there’s a fear of if that could happen, and if there aren’t any lasting consequences for the individuals who participated, does that just leave the door open for that to happen again? I do place great importance on the hearings, and sort of the precedent that that sets that this cannot happen in our country.”

Susan Loconsole, a Democrat from Carol Stream, Illinois, who has been watching as much of the hearings as she can and said she felt “devastated” by the attack, believes the election system has been weakened in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election.

“I don’t think that there’s suddenly any more fraud or anything different going on,” she said. “It’s just one person saying there was and having so many people that believe everything he says, that they now have taken that as their message. There in itself is the most frightening thing in this country.”

Americans’ views on the likelihood that an election in the US would be overturned for partisan reasons have held steady at a roughly even split since last summer. Republicans (53% very or somewhat likely) and Democrats (49%) are about equally apt to say it is likely an election would be overturned, but Republicans are more likely to see such an outcome as “very” likely (21% among Republicans vs. 11% among Democrats).

The poll participant from Alabama, a retired teacher who backed Trump in 2020, said, “I still have my values, so I’m going to vote for the candidate that I normally would vote for, but there’s a concern about the correct candidates that are truly elected being put in office.” Transparency, the respondent said, was key. “Make sure the true vote is shown, whether it’s the vote I want or not, it should be the true vote, the true voice of the American people.”

Loconsole, the Democrat from Illinois, expressed faith that the results would be trustworthy. “I will, again, trust the system in the next election, even if that means that the Republicans take over.”

And when asked about her views on the future of American democracy, Woodward, the teacher from Colorado, said, “I’m an optimist. I have to be to wake up and vote and to watch the news. I am optimistic that people will do the right thing and that we’ll find a way to come together, also because I have children and teach children. I just have to think that good things are on the horizon, and that we can do this.”

The new CNN poll was conducted by SSRS June 13 through July 13 among a random national sample of 1,459 adults initially reached by mail, and is the third survey CNN has conducted using this methodology. Surveys were either conducted online or by telephone with a live interviewer. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.

  • You have no business asking for Atta Mills autopsy report Samuel Atta Mills tells Koku Anyidoho

Brother of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, Samuel Atta Mills has stated that the Head of Atta Mills Institute, Koku Anyidoho has no right to ask for the autopsy report of the late President.

Koku Anyidoho in an interview with JoyNews on Tuesday, dared Samuel Atta Mills to produce the autopsy report on the death of his brother as he alleged that “Sammy Atta Mills has questions to answer.”

Responding to the demand by Koku Anyidoho in an interview on Upfront, Wednesday, the KEEA MP said Mr. Anyidoho has no business demanding the autopsy report.

“Autopsy report is personal for the family. Is he a family member? What is his business asking for an autopsy report? We took the autopsy report from the 37 military hospital, we went to AMA. Professor Mills was buried there with a death certificate from AMA, we had to take the autopsy report over there. That is when they granted us the burial certificate. What is his business asking?” he noted.

The MP lamented “why a non-governmental organisation [Atta Mills Institute] is running the place [Asomdwe Park].”

This Sunday will mark the 10th Anniversary of the death of former President John Evans Atta Mills.

According to Mr. Anyidoho, a memorial thanksgiving service will be held after which President Akufo-Addo will commission the Asomdwe Park.

He threatened that after the commissioning, “John Dramani Mahama and Sammy Atta Mills will never enter the place to do anything there.”

When questioned about whether he will attend the memorial service of his late brother, Samuel Atta Mills responded “No. Why go there in the morning when I have not been invited.”

“What right does he have to threaten us that he will not allow us to go to Asomdwe Park,” he asked.

The family of the late President had earlier accused the Coastal Development Authority and the Atta Mills Institute of desecrating the body of the late President by embarking on renovation works and removing the tomb of the John Evans Atta Mills without informing the family.

But the Coastal Development Authority in a statement on Wednesday said “We wish to state that the grave was not opened and therefore no desecration of the body of the former President, H.E John Evans Atta Mills, has taken place.”

  • World Athletics Championships: Eilish McColgan and Jessica Judd reach 5,000m final

Britain’s Eilish McColgan and Jessica Judd are through to the 5,000m final at the World Championships in Oregon and Matthew Hudson-Smith is in the 400m final, but medal hope Max Burgin withdrew from the 800m with injury.

McColgan ran a season’s best 14 minutes 56.47 to advance and Judd 14:57.64.

Caster Semenya’s 15:46.12 was not enough to qualify, however, with the South African middle-distance great running the 5,000m because she is barred from races between 400m and a mile over her testosterone levels.

Semenya – a two-time Olympic champion and three-time world champion over 800m – finished 13th in her heat, around 45 seconds off the time required to reach the final.

The 31-year-old cannot compete at her preferred distance unless she takes medication to reduce her testosterone levels.

“I am learning and I am willing to learn even more,” said Semenya. “It was hot, [I] could not keep up with the pace, I tried to stick as much as I can.”

Ethiopia’s 10,000m champion Letesenbet Gidey qualified fastest in 14:52.27. Britain’s Amy-Eloise Markovc failed to qualify but ran a season’s best time of 15:31.62.

Langford and Rowden advance, Burgin out

Burgin, 20, set the fastest time in the world this year over 800m when he ran 1:43.52 in Finland last month, but withdrew shortly before Wednesday’s heats began.

Kyle Langford and Daniel Rowden ensured British representation in the semi-finals, finishing in 1:45.68 and 1:45.53 respectively, while Ireland’s Mark English also advanced in a season’s best 1:44.76.

Canada’s Marco Arop ran the fastest time of the day with 1:44.56, while Olympic champion Emmanuel Korir and fellow Kenyan Wyclife Kinyamal both went through safely too.

Hudson-Smith set the second fastest time of the day in the 400m semi-finals, his 44.38 placing him just behind American Michael Norman’s 44.30.

Former world and Olympic champion Kirani James of Grenada won his semi-final in 44.74, while the third semi-final was won by American Champion Allison in 44.71. South Africa’s world record holder Wayde van Niekerk – another former world and Olympic champion – advanced in 44.75.

Britain’s Alex Haydock-Wilson narrowly missed out despite a personal best 45.08, with Ireland’s Christopher O’Donnell also failing to qualify.

Reigning Olympic and world 400m champion Steven Gardiner of the Bahamas is absent from the Championships because of a tendon injury.

    Jeruto and Feng take gold

The only gold medals of the day were won by Kazakhstan’s Norah Jeruto in the steeplechase and Feng Bin of China in the discus.

Jeruto, who switched allegiance from Kenya to Kazakhstan earlier this year, set a World Championships record of 8:53.02 in the 3,000m steeplechase – the third-fastest time ever.

Ethiopian Werkuha Getachew took silver, and compatriot Mekides Abebe bronze.

Feng, who finished 17th at last year’s Olympics, took gold with a personal best 69.12m. Croatia’s Sandra Perkovic was second and American Olympic champion Valarie Allman third.

There was a blow for the host nation’s medal hopes as Fred Kerley – who won the 100m on Saturday – withdrew from the 4x100m because of injury.

But compatriot and defending 400m hurdles champion Dalilah Muhammad ran a season’s best 53.28 to win her heat and advance to the semi-finals and Olympic champion Sydney McLaughlin qualified fastest, winning heat three in 52.17.

Britain’s Jessie Knight failed to qualify with her time of 55.39.

In the 400m flat, Victoria Ohuruogu went out despite a personal best of 50.99, with team-mates Nicole Yeargin and Ama Pipi also failing to advance from their semi-finals.

Two-time Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo, who is yet to add world gold to her medal tally, was the fastest 400m qualifier in a season’s best 49.55.

The Dominican Republic’s Marileidy Paulino was the only other athlete under 50 seconds as she qualified in 49.98.

  • 6 min ago When Russia is the only way out of a war zone, Ukrainian refugees must hide their hatred

On a sweltering summer day in July, hundreds of Ukrainians try to rest on metal beds lined up in a basketball court-turned-shelter. Their tales of horror and hardship along with a few belongings are all they have left.

But with this safe haven being inside Russia, they are hesitant to share those stories.

Alexey Nechipurenko, 45, was maimed as Russian forces entered the southern port city of Mariupol. His foot was shot to pieces and his wife was killed before his eyes, he tells CNN.

But, as a Russian doctor tends his wounds, he insists Ukraine, not Russia, is to blame for his suffering.

“The Russians were just beginning to enter the city. Therefore, they just couldn’t actually have been on the side where we were,” he told CNN.

The basketball court shelter is in Taganrog, southern Russia, just 69 miles from Mariupol where Ukrainian soldiers and civilians held out for weeks in the Azovstal steel plant before Russia took full control of the city.

CNN was given exclusive access to the center set up to process some of the more than 2 million refugees estimated to have poured onto Russian soil since the invasion began on Feb. 24.

Human rights groups say Ukrainians are being “filtered” before being taken to the temporary shelters in Russia and any suspected of posing a threat are not allowed through.

And those who passed Russia’s first test and made it to Taganrog are reluctant to say too much.

“Now I’m here [in Russia] so please don’t press me, said a 30-year-old man from Mariupol who asked not to be identified and only wanted to be recorded talking to CNN with his back to the camera.
“I didn’t see who killed my relatives,” he said. “As far as I’m concerned, they’re just a casualty of this conflict.”

The demonstration held on Wednesday July 19, resulted in six people sustaining gunshot wounds and several others sustaining serious injuries at Bibiani in the Western North Region.

The victims were rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital and the Divine Love Hospital where they are receiving treatment.

Ogyeahoho Gyebi II, who doubles as the President of the National House of Chiefs, had gone to Bibiani to perform a rite to officially open the Mensin Gold Mine when the demonstrators began firing at the precinct of the Mine.

The demonstrators mostly the youth, numbering more than a hundred, clad in red and black, gathered at the shrine to prevent the Chief from performing the rites with claims that Ogyeahoho Gyebi, is not the legitimate chief to perform the rite for the Mensin Gold Mine but rather, Nana Ngoah Anyimah Kodom ll, the chief of Bibiani.

They accused the management of the Mine of refusing to employ them, a situation which resulted in the Wednesday demonstration.

According to them, the Management of Mensin Gold Mines Limited, the Assembly and traditional authorities had refused to employ the youth in the Municipality.

The leader of the group, Mr Kwame Tarbi, speaking to the media, pointed out that mining companies such as Chirano Gold Mines Limited, Ghana Bauxite Corporation and Mensin Gold Mines were all based in the Municipality, but had no significant impact on the lives of the youth in the area.

  • Farmers in Bolgatanga troubled over lack of rains

Farmers in Bolgatanga, in the Upper East Region, have bemoaned the lack of rain for some weeks now.

At the moment, the lack of rain is causing the majority of the crops to wither. The farmers are concerned that their harvests might eventually fail if the scenario persisted.

Some of them spoke to GhanaWeb’s Upper East Regional Correspondent, Sarah Dubure.

Mr. Atuah lamented that the lack of rain has slowed the growth of their crops, with some on the point of extinction.

He explained that under typical conditions, groundnut plants should have reached the blooming stage by now, but there are no visible signs of flowering.

“Now we are expecting that the groundnuts would be at the flowering stage, but because there is no rain, they are not flowering and some of them are even dying,” He said.

Mr Atuah further stated that the situation was not different with millet and corn.

“Some of the corn are also dying, and millet are also dying. Even now, with millet, they are supposed to grow, but because the rain has stopped, they are not doing well, so we don’t know what will happen,” He pointed.

Another farmer, Mr. Aniah Ayariga, pointed out that the situation was disturbing because they were worried about their crops and are desperately waiting for the rains to fall.

” The millet (first crop always planted and harvested)was doing well, but when the rain stopped for a long time, it did not produce the millet seeds again. You know, when it is time for them to produce the millet and the rain delays, they don’t produce again. They will just be there like that,” he reiterated.

Mr. Moses Abindau bemoaned the fact that, contrary to the norm, there had been little rain in July this year.

“We are in the seventh month and yet, the rains are not falling. Withthout rain, our crops will not do well. This is the time for us to get more rain in terms of farming.”

He added that this year’s food scarcity was ultimately caused by a similar circumstance to previous year’s.

He prayed that rain would fall so that the Region’s food situation would look better than it has in recent years and in years to come.

  • Agbodza bemoans duplication of projects captured in $750m loan agreement

The Ranking Member on the Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament, Governs Agbodza has bemoaned what he calls the duplication of projects and funding captured in the $750 million loan agreement before Parliament.

According to him, funding for infrastructure for the All African Games and rolling stock for the railway sector have already been approved by the house and as such, there is no need for them to be captured in the latest loan agreement.

He also contends that funding for the Suame interchange is captured twice in the loan agreement.

Speaking to the press, Governs Agbodza called for clarity from the Ministry of Finance and the other ministries concerned.

“We have noticed some projects being duplicated in the agreement. We do not believe this is right and we will not encourage it. We want some clarifications. The real problem in the Eastern corridor is the Oti-Damongo session, which the Chinese have failed to deliver, and we are encouraging the Minister for Roads and Highways to terminate the contract and reward it.”

“If we have any resources, we should be setting aside some money for the new contractor to complete the session… We believe that the breakdown is not satisfactory. We are not necessarily opposed to the $750 million. We only want to get things clearer. The information we have gathered so far is too limited.”

Parliament is currently debating the loan agreement with the Afrexim Bank for funding infrastructure projects and budget support.

The loan is part of a $1 billion dollar the government is seeking to shore up its reserves as well as to pay for several infrastructure projects across the country.

The Chairman of the Finance Committee, Kwaku Kwarteng moved the motion while the Ranking Member on the Committee, Dr Cassiel Ato-Forson during his contribution indicated that government has not built the necessary financial buffers to pay back the loan.

  • Education stakeholders move to zero in on poor menstrual hygiene in schools

Stakeholders in the education sector have come together to work out strategies to help bridge the challenges of poor menstrual hygiene in schools in the country.

As part of efforts to help solve the problem of poor menstrual hygiene and sanitation-related issues in schools, a non-governmental organization, Pencils of Hope together with some governmental organizations in education helped formed an alliance to help bridge the gap that pertains in the country.

According to statistics done on menstrual hygiene matters in 2020, nine out of 10 girls in rural areas in the country missed school during their periods due to poor menstrual hygiene, which affects their participation and performance in school.

The inability of girls in some rural parts of the country to purchase sanitary towels as well as the lack of access to some basic commodities have contributed to this challenge.

Speaking at the Sustainable WASH in Schools forum held by Pencils of Hope in Accra, to discuss the issue of poor implementation of handwashing and personal hygiene in schools, the Managing Director of Programs at Pencils of Hope, Freeman Gobah indicated that the program was important due to its impact on girls.

“This is a forum to partner and bring our resources together to achieve a common goal. We have done so much in WASH, so this is to discuss ways we can all come together to support students,” he said.

“We will continue to beyond our 10 years, build new schools, toilets, urinals, dustbins, menstrual hygiene products especially, reusable sanitary pads that we are teaching students to make themselves because we all know the prices of sanitary pads have shot up,” he added.

The program was attended by dignitaries such as the Chief of WASH UNICEF, Country Director of Action Aid Ghana, CEO of Sky Fox, PPAG, among others.

Also speaking at the program, a representative of the Director General of the Education Service, Theresa Oppong Mensah said her outfit is in support of the drive to improve sanitation in schools.

“The GES in its entirety is pleased to have one of its stakeholders come up with an innovative program that gives us a clear picture of WASH in schools and bring together methods not only to improve sanitation but also the school environment and make it conducive for learning.”

  • Ghana card shoots up Ghanaians with TIN from 4% to 85% Bawumia

Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has said the implementation of the Ghana card has helped increase the number of Ghanaians with Tax Identification Number (TIN) from 4% to 85%.

Speaking at the launch of ePharmacy in Accra on Monday, July 18, 2022, this astronomical increase is due to government’s digitalization agenda.

“They do not realise that through the Ghana card, we have been able to increase the proportion of Ghanaians with Tax Identification Numbers from 4% when we came into office to 85%,” he said.

It would be recalled that in April 2021, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in collaboration with the National Identification Authority (NIA) set up 14 offices across the country to synchronise the Tax Identification Numbers (TINs) with the Ghana card.

The move was to rope in many people into the country’s tax net, as well as facilitate the raising of revenue from the large informal.

  • Rawling – boxing, Kufuor – football: Ghana’s 4th Republican presidents and their childhood sports

In our previous article, we gave you a list of 5 active Ghanaian footballers whose Black Stars careers might be over after being out of the national team for a minimum of three years.

Today, we look at the childhood sports of all the men who have occupied Ghana’s presidency since the beginning of the 4th republic in 1993.

Children and their preference for a particular sport is mostly influenced by their community or the school they find themselves in.

Some children after falling in love with a particular sport tend to pursue it as a career with the needed talents but others abandon it because of their parents.

Here is a list of Ghana’s 4th Republican presidents and their childhood sports:

    Jerry John Rawlings – boxing

Born June 22, 1947, the late president of the 4th Republic of Ghana is best remembered for promoting boxing in Ghana and helping nurture several talents across the country.

Rawlings according to his son Kimathi had hoped in Ghanaian boxers because they had a strong disciplined mind to become great.

Ghana’s legendary boxer Azumah Nelson has on countless occasions credited the successes he archived in his career to the late Jerry John Rawlings who was also an amateur boxer.

Though JJ Rawlings couldn’t pursue his boxing career, he made sure that other young talents would get all the needed support from the State to be useful.

During his reign, Ghana won three world titles through Azumah Nelson, Ike Bazooka Quartey, and the late Alfred Kotey.

    John Evans Atta-Mills – Hockey

There isn’t much to be said about the footballing career of Ghana’s second president in the 4th Republic aside being in the school team during his days in Prempeh Colleague in Kumasi.

However, John Agyekum Kufuor was an established football administrator before occupying the high office in Ghana.

As a football administrator, former President John Agyekum Kufuor was the Chief Executive Officer of Asante Kotoko where he won a lot of local titles before he became Ghana’s leader in 2001.

His love for football also made him commit more resources to help the Black Stars qualify for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in Ghana’s footballing history in 2006.

Kufuor renovated the Accra Sports Stadium and the Baba Yara Stadium as well as built the Essipong and Tamale stadium in 2008 to host the CAN 2008.

    John Evans Atta-Mills – Hockey

The late former President was a professional hockey player but also worked as a football administrator for giants Accra Hearts of Oak.

He played for both the hockey teams of Achimota College during his Secondary School education and the University of Ghana, Legon in his tertiary days.

As a State Man, Atta-Mills changed the face of Ghana hockey by supporting the construction of the first ever water-based Astro-turf hockey pitch in 1999, and an ultra-modern world-class National Hockey Stadium which was built in 2009.

He is also a founding member of the Veterans Hockey team in Accra which was established in 1972.

    John Dramani Mahama – football

Just like John Agyekum Kufuor, John Dramani Mahama was also a talented footballer but his father Emmanuel Adama reportedly made him ditch football to focus more on his education.

Though John Mahama couldn’t pursue a career in football, his son Sharaf continues from where his father left off to become a professional footballer.

Sharaf Mahama has played for several clubs in Eurpe inclduing Tempo Overijse, KV Mechelen, Charleroi and Rostocker FC.

As President, John Mahama’s love for football was seen through the government’s sports policies.

He built the Cape Coast Sports Stadium to ease the pressure of the four existing stadiums in Ghana. Mahama also built Ghana’s only boxing arena in Bukoum to promote the sport which sold Ghana to the world after football.

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo – boxing

The current president is a football fan but his love for boxing precedes every sport in the world.

Young Akufo-Addo played football in his high school days and was in the University of Ghana, Legon’s hockey team together with the late John Evans Atta-Mills.

Akufo-Addo was an all-around athlete amongst all the presidents we have seen in the 4th Republic.

As the president, Akufo-Addo has invested heavily in sports infrastructure with the building of the multi-purpose sports complex in all the 16 regions in Ghana.

He will also be the 4th president to taste a FIFA World Cup after Kufuor, Mills, and Mahama.

  • Apple sued over Apple Pay payment system

Apple has been hit with a lawsuit in the US over Apple Pay.

The tech giant is being accused of using its market power in the mobile phone industry to fend off competition from other payment card issuers.

The class-action complaint was filed in a federal court in California by Affinity Credit Union, an Iowa-based chartered credit union.

Apple did not immediately respond to the BBC’s request for comment.

According to the complaint, Apple “coerces” consumers who use its smartphones, smart watches and tablets into using its own wallet for contactless payments, unlike makers of Android-based devices that let consumers choose wallets, such as Google Pay and Samsung Pay.

The complaint alleges that Apple prevents consumers from using competing mobile wallets capable of offering competing tap and pay solutions.

Iowa’s Affinity Credit Union said Apple’s anti-competitive conduct forced the more than 4,000 banks and credit unions that use Apple Pay to pay at least $1 billion in excess fees annually for the privilege.

It also said Apple’s conduct minimised the incentive for the California-based company to make Apple Pay work better and make it more resistant to security breaches.

“Apple’s conduct harms not only issuers, but also consumers and competition as a whole,” Affinity Credit Union said.

“If Apple faced competition, it could not sustain these substantial fees.”

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages, and a halt to Apple’s alleged anti-competitive conduct.

Apple already faces a possible heavy fine after European Union regulators on 2 May said it had abused its dominance in iOS devices and mobile wallets, by refusing to give payment rivals access to its technology.

According to the complaint, Apple charges issuers a 0.15% fee on credit transactions and a flat 0.5 cent fee on debit transactions using Apple Pay, while Android-based rivals charge nothing.

The plaintiff is represented by the law firms Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro and Sperling and Slater.

Last August, they helped obtain a $100 million settlement for smaller iOS developers which claimed Apple overcharged them on commissions.

In discussing the European Union’s probe of Apple’s mobile payment policies in May, the bloc’s digital chief Margrethe Vestager said Apple claimed it couldn’t provide access to NFC for security reasons.

In Europe, most payments in shops made with a mobile phone rely on a wireless technology called ‘Near Field Communication’ – NFC.

This functionality enables communication between a customer’s mobile phone and the shop’s payments terminal – allowing ‘tap and go’.

“Our investigation to date did not reveal any evidence that would point to such a higher security risk,” Vestager said on the EU’s website.

“On the contrary, evidence on our file indicates that Apple’s conduct cannot be justified by security concerns.”

  • Ukraine war: Russia’s Lavrov says ready to expand war aims

Russia’s military focus in Ukraine is no longer “only” the east of the country, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said.

In an interview with Russian state media, he implied Moscow’s strategy had changed after the West supplied Ukraine with longer-range weapons.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February, claiming falsely that Russian-speakers in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region had suffered a genocide and needed to be liberated.

Five months on, Russia has occupied parts of the east and south of the country, but it failed in its original aim of capturing Kyiv and has since claimed its main objective was the liberation of Donbas.

Since February, the West has supplied Ukraine with increasingly powerful weapons to use in its defence against Russian forces.

Mr Lavrov says that has forced Russia to expand its objectives further.

“We cannot allow the part of Ukraine controlled by [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky… to possess weapons that would pose a direct threat to our territory,” Mr Lavrov said in the interview with Margarita Simonyan – a well-known commentator on Russian TV and editor-in-chief of broadcaster RT.

“The geography is different now,” he said, naming the southern Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions as Russia’s latest objectives. Moscow’s forces already occupy parts of both regions.

Mr Lavrov specifically referred to the Himars longer-range rocket system – supplied only recently by the US – with which Ukraine has had some success.

For two days running Ukrainian forces have used Himars to hit a key, strategic bridge in occupied Kherson, reports say. The Antonivskyi bridge is one of two bridges that Russia relies on to supply areas it has captured on the west bank of the Dnipro river, including Kherson city.

The Russian foreign minister described the West’s actions in giving weapons to Ukraine as an “impotent anger” and a “desire to make things worse”.

    Russia’s annexation plans

The apparent expansion of Russia’s objectives was also noted on Tuesday by US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby, who said Russia was already making plans to annex large swathes of Ukrainian territory.

He accused Moscow of using a similar “playbook” to its takeover of Crimea, when it annexed the Ukrainian peninsula by organising a sham referendum in 2014.

Mr Kirby said Russia was installing illegitimate pro-Russian officials to run occupied regions of Ukraine. These new “administrations” would then organise local referendums on becoming part of Russia, possibly as soon as September.

The results of the votes would be used by Russia “to try to claim annexation of sovereign Ukrainian territory”, Mr Kirby said.

Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014 after a hastily-organised referendum – viewed as illegal by the international community, in which voters chose to join Russia.

Many supporters of Kyiv boycotted the vote and the campaign was neither free nor fair.

Similar votes held in other parts of Ukraine would almost certainly see a similar situation, with any opposition to joining Russia largely supressed.

Mr Kirby said he was “exposing” the Russian plans “so the world knows that any purported annexation is premeditated, illegal and illegitimate”, and promised there would be a quick response from the US and its allies.

The areas targeted for annexation included Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk and Luhansk, he said – the same regions Mr Lavrov says are now Russian objectives.

  • GHAMRO vigorously pursuing its mandate, Rex Omar says after court ruling

Rex Omar, the Interim Director of Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO), has assured members that the outfit remains resolute in the discharge of its duties despite a court ruling on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, that set aside elections organized by the management on March 15, 2022.

In a statement sent to GhanaWeb, Rex Omar mentioned that “GHAMRO is vigorously pursuing its mandate in terms of Licensing music users, collecting the said fees and distributing same. Further to Section 30 of the L.I1962, GHAMRO has duly submitted its report as required under law to the Regulators, the Attorney Generals Department through the Copyright Office.”

“We, therefore, urge all music users: radio, TV, pubs, nightclubs, restaurants, banks, shopping malls, barbering & hairdressing salons etc. to apply to GHAMRO for a license under section 36 to enable GHAMRO fulfill its mandate to distribute royalties to right owners.”

Rex Omar in the statement announced to members that the governing board has been asked by the court to step aside “pending the determination of the substantive matter” brought before it by aggrieved members led by Steven Boahene.

    Below is the statement.

As you may be aware, the GHAMRO constitution enjoins the organization to organize elections every four years to elect a governing Board to steer the affairs of the society.

We have followed this pattern since the year 2015 till date, recently, however, some aggrieved members took the organization to court over the mandate of the Board and the Election Process.

After one year of the case follow-up, the court in February this year ruled favour of the Organization paving the way for the Board elections on 15th March 2022.

These aggrieved members led by Steven Boahene appealed against the decision which the trail Judge duly set aside on Tuesday 19th July 2022 pending the determination of the substantive matter. Thus, by implication, the Governing Board has been set aside.

I will like to take this opportunity to assure our members and the general public that, GHAMRO is vigorously pursuing its mandate in terms of Licensing music users, collecting the said fees and distributing same.

Further to Section 30 of the L.I1962, GHAMRO has duly submitted its report as required under law to the Regulators, the Attorney Generals Department through the Copyright Office.

We, therefore, urge all music users: radio, TV, pubs, nightclubs, restaurants, banks, shopping malls, barbering & hairdressing salons etc. to apply to GHAMRO for a license under section 36 to enable GHAMRO fulfill its mandate to distribute royalties to Right Owners. GOD BLESS US ALL. THANK YOU.

  • BoG report: Banks lose GH¢ 61m to fraud, 53% Of cases involve staff

The banking sector in the country last year lost GH¢61 million through fraud and other banking malpractice. This represents a surge of 144 per cent losses due to fraud in the banking sector from GH¢25 million in 2020 to GH¢61 million in 2021.

In all, 53.46 per cent of the incidents of fraud reported last year involved staff of the financial institutions.

The upsurge in losses recorded for the period was due to the increased use of online payment platforms for fraudulent transactions.

This was contained in the Banking and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions (SDIs) and Electronic Money Issuers (EMIs) fraud report for 2021 issued by the Bank of Ghana.

    Statistics

Statistics indicate that staff involvement in fraud cases increased to 278, as compared to 253 in 2020, representing an increase of 9.88 per cent year-on-year.

Rural and Community Banks recorded the highest rate of staff involvement in fraud with a figure of 46.04 per cent, the Universal Banks accounted for 28.06 per cent, while the Savings and Loans companies accounted for 16.55 per cent.

The report, however, recorded 2,347 attempted fraud cases, which represents a minimal decline of 12.09 per cent or 2,670 in 2020.

Another significant fraud type was impersonation which recorded a loss of GH¢10 million. This loss was attributed to lack of due diligence on the part of bank staff and customers of financial institutions when carrying out transactions.

    Weak systems

ATM card/POS related fraud also recorded the highest loss of GH¢22 million. This can be attributed to negligence of some customers and weak systems of some financial institutions.

  • Covid in China: Officials sorry for break-ins amid hunt for contacts

Chinese officials have apologised to residents of a locked-down community in Guangzhou for removing the locks on the doors to their homes.

A number of people at the apartment complex in the southern Chinese city had recently tested positive for Covid.

Officials were searching for close contacts who may have been hiding in an attempt to avoid being moved to a quarantine centre.

China maintains a strict zero-Covid policy and quarantines are common.

Those affected by the break-ins have been told that they will be compensated for the damage.

According to the Tianmu News outlet, the locks were broken on the front doors of at least 84 homes by grassroots officials and community workers.

The incident happened on 10 July, soon after several people at the complex had tested positive for the virus.

According to the Global Times newspaper, residents were moved to a centralised quarantine facility, but “some close contacts were found hiding in their houses”, leading to searches of other homes for “hidden residents”.

    ‘An apology is not enough’

Video was captured of some of the break-ins and posted on popular social networks like Sina Weibo.

It sparked an angry outcry, with many calling for those involved to be arrested for illegal entry, given that trespassing falls under China’s criminal law.

The district government in Guangzhou’s Liwan District apologised yesterday, saying the break-ins “deviated from the requirements of epidemic prevention”. It said that an investigation would be carried out, and those involved punished.

Users on the popular Sina Weibo social network have called the incident “lawless” and have posted that such behaviour “tramples on people’s civil rights”.

“Is this a country ruled by law?” one person asks. “An apology is not enough,” adds another.China has maintained a strict zero-Covid policy throughout the pandemic. Whole communities are locked down when residents test positive. They are then either restricted from leaving their homes, or moved to quarantine bases.

Very little notice is often given before a lockdown, often triggering anger and anxiety. Some lockdowns have lasted for months, as in the city of Shanghai earlier this year.

Currently, there are more than 1,000 locked-down communities in the country, as outbreaks have raged due to the highly-transmissible Omicron subvariants.
