  • We are continuing with our demonstration despite the police attack – Arise Ghana

A leading member of the Arise Ghana movement, Bernard Mornah, has indicated that despite the chaos that erupted during the first day of their protest, they will still go ahead with the day two protest.

According to him, the violence that occurred during their protest was premeditated by the police as they fired rubber bullets and tear gas at protestors without provocation.

“The police started firing rubber bullets and tear gas towards us… We were addressing the demonstrators, only for us to realize that they had started shooting into the van. The bullet hit people. Asiedu Nketiah laid flat in the vehicle. Ofosu Ampofo fell when he attempted to go off the track… We did everything to contain the situation, but the police did everything to scatter us, and they succeeded. We are continuing with our demonstration. We have a two-day demonstration.

“Why will you come at us with such violence? The public order act does not allow you to tell us where we should use and what time to start. The demonstrators did not move and the police shot at them,” Citinewsroom.com quoted Bernard Mornarh.

Arise Ghana began a historic two-day demonstration on June 28 to primarily protest persistent and astronomical hikes in fuel prices by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government that has imposed excruciating economic hardships on Ghanaians.

In a statement by Sammy Gyamfi, it adds that the protest is to also oppose the imposition of the obnoxious E-Levy on the already-burdened Ghanaian people by the insensitive Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government and demand a full-scale and bi-partisan parliamentary probe into COVID-19 expenditures.

Others are to protest the grabbing of state lands by officials of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government, particularly the de-classification of huge portions of the Achimota Forest Reserve.

The rest are to protest the increased rate of police brutalities and state-sponsored killings of innocent Ghanaians, as well as the growing culture of human rights abuses under the watch of President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and demand the total cancellation of the fraudulent “Agyapa” deal.

The group started its first day of demonstrations on June 28, 2022, starting from the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Interchange/Obra Spot, but chaos erupted when protestors pelted stones at the police.

In retaliation, the police also fired tear gas and rubber bullets, injuring scores of protestors.

Despite these happenings, the group says it will go ahead with its protest, which is expected to start at El-Wak Sports stadium and end at Parliament House.

Meanwhile, the police have announced the arrest of 29 people in connection with violent incidents that marred the Arise Ghana demonstration at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

According to a statement dated June 28 and signed by Chief Superintendent Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, the police were also reviewing available footage with the view to making more arrests if need be.

“The Police have arrested 29 demonstrators for their participation in violent attacks on the police and some members of the public, including school children, during the Arise Ghana demonstration in Accra,” the June 28, 2022 statement added.

  • Tension rises as armed Police ransack house of Saviour Church of Ghana’s leader

There is tension at the headquarters of Saviour Church of Ghana at Akyem Osiem in the Eastern region following the invasion of the house of General Superintendent, Opanyin Abraham Adusei by armed police officers Tuesday dawn.

Opanyin Abraham Adusei had travelled to Afram Plains to visit his commercial farms but other occupants were present in the house.

The armed police personnel numbering about 20 invaded the house and ransacked the rooms and threw away some movable items from the room.

It is alleged that the team took away some unspecified amounts of money and other items.

The incident attracted members of Saviour Church who thronged the scene. The atmosphere became volatile as the mob increased in numbers amidst agitation against the police.

The armed police reportedly drawn from the Eastern Regional Headquarters and Tafo District Police Command then drove off.

It is not clear the reason for the action of the police but sources say they were enforcing a court order.

However, some of the angry church members believe it is state-backed against the leader of the Church for his support for the opposition National Democratic Congress, NDC.

Starr News Eastern Regional Correspondent Kojo Ansah who visited the scene reports that tension is still high at the headquarters of Saviour Church as many members of the church from other places continue to troop in.

  • Kenya ‘ashamed’ of child trafficking exposed by BBC

Kenya’s director of public prosecution has vowed to take action after a BBC Africa Eye report revealed the organised smuggling of disabled children from Tanzania to Kenya for profit.

“I am actually ashamed and not trying to give an excuse, I promise to pick it up myself but the best thing is for us to have a conversation as East Africans”, Noordin Haji said on Tuesday.

“Lobbying is going to be one of the best things, let us engage politicians, civil servants – if we can agree and have a focus, I can assure you I will be part of that and also include my colleagues in the criminal justice system,” he added.

Tanzania meanwhile has also spoken of its “disappointment” at the BBC’s findings, and says it is already “working closely” with Kenya to tackle the scourge of child trafficking.

Many victims in these cases are taken from their parents with the promise of a better life. But once in Nairobi they are forced to beg on the streets with the proceeds going to their captors.

  • Cara Black backs Ons Jabeur to deal with the pressure of being Africa’s top tennis player

Cara Black has backed Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur to cope with both the pressure of being Africa’s top tennis player and her bid to win a first Grand Slam title.

Zimbabwean Black, who reached number one in the world as a doubles player, admits that coping with the expectations of not only her country but a whole continent is going to be one of Jabeur’s main challenges.

Jabeur rose to number two in the WTA rankings on Monday to make her the highest-ever ranked African singles player (male or female) in the open era.

The 27-year-old followed the news with a straight-sets win over Mirjam Bjorklund in the first round at Wimbledon, where she will play Poland’s Katarzyna Kawa in the second round on Wednesday.

Jabeur is looking to progress past the quarter-finals of a slam for the first time, having lost in the first round at the French Open last month.

“That is probably one of the biggest things that Ons is going to have to try and face,” Black told BBC Sport Africa.

“Coming off of the big win in Madrid and then final in Rome and then getting to the French Open, she felt like she was one of the hot favourites.

“Whereas before she’s gone into the slams under the radar a little, now she’s in the spotlight.

“I think she’s just going to try to manage that, in terms of trying not to add that pressure and expectation on herself, but more feel that everyone’s behind her and try and embrace it.

“She’s such a smart girl, she’s learning as she’s going along and she said that the French Open was a big learning curve for her.

“One of the quotes she said was ‘A couple of bad things have to happen before good things come’ – that was such an impressive statement.

“She’s so mature like that and I think she’s taking everything on board. So hopefully here she’ll be able to just calm those nerves and just go out there and play as free as she can.”

Jabeur ‘flying the flag for Africa’

Cara Black and Martina Navratilova at Wimbledon in 2019
Five-time Wimbledon champion Cara Black returned to play with Martina Navratilova in the invitational doubles in 2019

Jabeur herself has actually welcomed the expectations that come with her position as Africa’s top tennis player.

“Pressure is a privilege so I try to use that to be positive – I always wanted to be at this level, I always want to play like this,” she told BBC World Service Sport after her 6-1 6-3 victory over Bjorklund.

“Hopefully I am just gonna handle the pressure much better by getting used to it. I love the attention as well – my family tells me that it’s a good thing.

“[I’m] very happy with the with the way I was playing lately and proud with the personality that I’ve developed.

“The person that I am on the court and outside the court is really important for me, and I feel like I’m going in the right way. Now the next goal would be number one.”

Black has won five Wimbledon titles across women’s and mixed doubles and is back at the tournament this year as a coach, and will also take part in the invitational doubles.

She says that Jabeur’s achievement is “absolutely incredible” for the sport in Africa.

“Just saying that she is ‘world number two’ gives me goosebumps,” the 43-year-old added.

“I’m actually not surprised that she is where she is because she’s an incredible talent, she’s worked super hard and has got such a great attitude.

“She can adapt so well to the grass, to the clay and hard courts. She is a unique player, she’s got beautiful touch and feel and just knows her way around the court.

“I just hope everyone gets behind her – which I know they already are. But it is such an inspiration for the kids back home and she really is flying the flag for Africa.”

  • Zimbabwe issues arrest warrant for top author

Zimbabwe has issued an arrest warrant for award-winning author and filmmaker Tsitsi Dangarembga after she failed to appear in court over charges of inciting violence, her lawyer said Tuesday.

Dangarembga, 63, is seeing her doctor in Germany and “missed court for medical reasons,” her lawyer Chris Mhike told AFP.

“We expect her to be well enough to return to Zimbabwe imminently, and to attend to the outstanding court processes.”

Dangarembga was arrested in July 2020 for staging an anti-government protest alongside her neighbour in the affluent Harare suburb of Borrowdale.

Standing by the roadside, she held a banner that read “We want better — reform our institutions.”

Dangarembga was charged with inciting public violence and freed on bail the following day.

Nearly two years on, the trial has still not started and Dangarembga has filed to have the case thrown out for lack of evidence.

A magistrate’s court on Monday was due to rule on her request, but issued the arrest warrant when she failed to show up.

Dangarembga will seek to have the warrant cancelled, said the lawyer.

The ruling on the application for discharge will now be handed down on August 4.

Dangarembga stepped into the international limelight in 1988 with her debut novel “Nervous Conditions,” the first book published in English by a black Zimbabwean woman.

The work earned her the prestigious Commonwealth Writers’ Prize the following year.

The Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) last week called on the Zimbabwe government to clear Dangarembga “of all charges, or to drop the case.”

  • Separatist leader in Nigeria denied bail again

Nnamdi Kanu, who heads a banned separatist group in Nigeria, has been denied bail by a court for the second time in as many months.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob) leader is awaiting trial on terrorism and treason charges, which he denies.

Mr Kanu, who holds a British passport, was arrested in Kenya a year ago and extradited to Nigeria – where he is in custody of the secret police.

Rejecting his latest bid, trial judge Binta Nyako said Mr Kanu had failed to give a satisfactory reason for breaching previous bail conditions imposed on him in 2017.

She insisted that the suit was a gross abuse of the court process and an attempt to continue to litigate on issues that have already been ruled on.

The case has been adjourned until November 14.

Ipob wants a group of states in south-eastern Nigeria, made up mainly of people from the Igbo ethnic group, to break away and form the independent nation of Biafra.

  • Sammy Gyamfi explains how an NDC government will deal with National Cathedral project

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has consistently criticized the project insisting that since it was a personal vow the President made to God, it was wrong to use state funds.

According to the NDC’s argument the President mentioned that the construction of the project was not going to be done at the expense of the taxpayer, hence it’s wrong to use state funds for personal dreams

The question on some people’s minds is whether or not the project will be continued if the NDC comes to power.

Even though there’s not been an official position, Sammy Gyamfi said: “The board of trustees is already raising funds for the project and individuals and other groups are also donating and so if we come and the church or Christian body brings up an idea or seek government’s support or facilitation for any cause, I know any NDC government will support.

“For now, public funds have been used on that project without parliamentary approval and against the laws of this country and so let’s deal with that”.

Speaking on PeaceFM’s “The Platform”programme, he added: “…who knows if by the time we come to power and the project has advanced to a certain stage because of funds raised; who knows…the party is yet to take a position on whether it will be willing to commit public funds…

  • US Embassy in Ghana restates support for LGBTI+ community

The US Embassy in Ghana has restated the support of their country towards persons who identify as members of the LGBTQI+ community.

In a post on their social media handle, the Embassy said US remained committed to bringing an end to the stigma and discrimination meted out against LGBTI+ persons.

It also stressed their dedication to promoting human rights and ensuring freedom for all.

“The U.S. is committed to ending violence, discrimination, and stigma against LGBTQI+ persons and promoting human rights and fundamental freedoms for all,” the US Embassy in Ghana tweeted on June 27.

In a separate tweet on June 24, the embassy advocating for LGBTQI+ persons said they were seeking for their basic human rights to be respected.

It stated that LGBTQI+ persons deserve to be treated equally under the law.

“LGBTQI+ persons do not seek special rights, only respect for their basic human rights. As our colleagues, our neighbors, and members of our families and houses of worship, LGBTQI+ persons deserve equal treatment under the law,” the tweet said.

Conversations bothering on LGBTQI+ resurfaced earlier this month after advocates mounted a huge billboard along a major road to mark the Pride month which is celebrated in June.

This drew the wrath on Ningo Prampram MP, Sam Nartey George, who issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the city authorities to pull down the billboards.

    This was subsequently carried through.

The MP and some of his colleagues are spearheading a Private Members bill against LGBTI+ and it related activities.

The bill when passed will criminalize activities of LGBTI+ and curtail the rights of individuals engaged in the act.

  • E-Levy not bad, Ghanaians simply don’t want to pay taxes – Gabby

A leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has stated that the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) is not a bad tax measure.

In a series of posts on his social media handle on Monday June 27, the lawyer lamented that the E-Levy since its passage in May this year has failed to live up to government’s expectation, in terms of delivering needed revenue.

According to him, the tax measure has only managed to deliver on 10% of the estimated revenue target.

“After 5 months of stalemate and bashing, the e-levy, after implementation, is delivering only 10% of estimated revenues; our revenues remain very low as compared to the rest of the world; debt levels dangerously high, cedi, like most currencies, struggling against the US dollar,” Gabby tweeted.

While hinting at an IMF bailout programme option available to government, Gabby was quick to add that “I am not for an IMF program that throws peanuts at us but imposes conditions that will end up hurting the poor, jobs and businesses more.”

In a separate tweet however, the co-founder of Danquah Institute stated that despite the E-Levy not delivering on expected revenue, it does not make it a bad tax but rather Ghanaians are responsible since they do not want to pay taxes.

“If the e-levy is so far not bringing in the estimated revenues, it does not mean it is a bad tax. It means Ghanaians simply do not want to pay taxes,” Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko tweeted.

The E-Levy was passed and signed into law by President Akufo-Addo in March despite fierce opposition from a cross-section of Ghanaians, the Minority in Parliament, civil society organizations, and various stakeholders.

The government believes the tax measure is necessary to close revenue gaps and help address the nation’s revenue mobilization and economic management, even though many have criticized it as regressive and one that would reverse progress made toward a cashless economy.

After a five-month impasse in Parliament, it was passed in late March 2022. But the levy’s projected revenue for the 2022 fiscal year had to be revised from GH¢6.9 billion to GH¢4.9 billion.

  • Arise Ghana appeals High Court ruling on protest

A pressure group, Arise Ghana, has filed a suit at the Court of Appeal to set aside a ruling by the High Court on their intended demonstration.

The Accra High Court on Monday ruled that the protest by Arise Ghana on June 28 and 29 could only be staged between the hours of 8 am and 4 pm.

The court additionally directed that the protest should commence at the Obra Spot here in Accra and end at the Independence Square.

But the group is unsatisfied with the ruling of the High Court.

In a suit filed by the group sighted by myjoyonline.com, Arise Ghana is seeking an “order reversing the ruling of the High Court.”

The service filed the case seeking to halt the two-day protest set to commence on Tuesday.

This was after it alleged in a statement that the group, Arise Ghana, had refused to begin and end the demonstration before nightfall.

The group, however, contends it reached an agreement with the police and is therefore surprised at the turn of events.

DSP Sylvester Asare urged the court to adjourn the matter since the Ghana Police Service had yet to receive documents filed by the protestors. He asked for a two-day adjournment.

But the lawyer for the protestors, Godwin Tameklo accused the Police of bad faith; adding that the protest was to take place on Tuesday.

He told the court that granting an adjournment will effectively mean putting the protest on hold. The group, he continued, informed the Police of the demonstration as far back as June 2.

The Court presided over by Justice Comfort Tasiame adjourned proceedings to 11:30 am to enable the Police to study the documents.

At 11:30 am on Monday, DSP Asare once again asked for an adjournment. He explained that the Police needed more time to study the documents.

On his part, Mr. Tameklo urged the court to dismiss the application, arguing that granting this request will empower the Police to use such processes to frustrate the rights of citizens to protest.

Justice Comfort Tasiame subsequently dismissed the request by the Police and directed that lawyers for the Service justify why the protest should be halted.

DSP Asare then told the court, the proposed timelines as put forward by the protestors have the potential to affect effective policing.

He explained that it is on this basis that the Police was asking for a restraining order. Lawyer for Arise Ghana, Godwin Tameklo disagreed.

He insisted the Police have no power under the law to determine at which time a protest should take place.

He accused the Police yet again of acting in bad faith and going against its arrangement with the group. He said the organizers had initially wanted to stage a 48hour non-stop protest but later conceded to end at 3pm and 5pm on day one and two respectively.

The Court presided over by Justice Tasiame decided to grant the request by the Police partially by fixing the said timelines and routes.

  • Land guards attack residents at Dome, destroys homes

An attack by land guards on properties on a land at Sawmill Down at Dome Pillar Two in Accra on Sunday morning has left more than 60 residents, including children and pregnant women, displaced.

The land guards, wielding guns and machetes, destroyed makeshift structures occupied by the residents, in an attempt to eject them from the land which is a subject of a court litigation.

During the attack, one of the pregnant women fell unconscious and had to be rushed to the hospital.

The attackers, who arrived at the scene on motorbikes, hacked and vandalised all 14 wooden structures on the two-plot land, warning to burn down the structures if the residents refused to leave.

The police were called in but the attackers, numbering about eight, escaped before the arrival of the police patrol team.

The original owner of the land, Nana Kwame, permitted the residents to occupy half of the land, on humanitarian grounds, while he built on the other half.

According to him, he acquired the land in 1995 from one of the Gbese families, adding that there had been no issue until recently when another family gave indication that it had won a court case over the ownership of the lands in that area.

Nana Kwame explained that the family filed a suit in court against him over the land, and as part of the settlement he decided to attorn tenancy to the new family, and pay the necessary fees.

But before they could sign the settlement agreement, the family said it had sold the land to another person, Ibrahim Sibie, popularly known as Bolumba, who also claims to have sold it to a new buyer.

According to Nana Kwame, he has secured a court injunction restricting Bolumba and his assigns from entering the land, indicating he will file for contempt against him.

  • Government setting up data exchange hub Ursula

Minister for Communication and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, says the government is setting up a data exchange hub to make uniform data across all sectors of the economy readily available in the governance process.

Speaking at the World Development Report 2021 launch, a country dissemination workshop in Accra, the minister said: “We are working on a data exchange hub. We see that it will be difficult to store all our data in one location, but what will make it possible for us to access the health of data in several databases is putting in place a data exchange hub that provides the infrastructure protocols and framework for data-sharing across the public and private sectors”.

She mentioned that sharing real-time information is also expected to improve security across the country, as the security and intelligence agencies can target scarce resources to where it is needed most based on timely and accurate data.

“The partnership between development partners, civil societies and government is expected to improve, as there will be more reliable and uniform data across all sectors of the economy readily available in the governance process,” Ms. Owusu-Ekuful said.

The minister revealed that on the commercial side, the government is looking to model a regulated commercial framework around big data. This will encourage institutions, both private and public, to generate more data.

The Big Data initiatives are expected to be deployed with a data governance framework that defines data value, data exchange protocols, security channels and protocols, data governance hierarchy, and data exchange dispute resolution protocols, among others.

The government is currently working on deploying Big Data across the country to rationalise the collection, processing, storing and sharing of data among government agencies.

“This is expected to be the next major jump on our journey to completely digitize our economy. Big Data is expected to come with the needed data analytics platform that will help make proper sense of all the data being mined across government. It will also help the government track trends across the ecosystem and make projections based on data modeling techniques that will be critical for decision-making across the spectrum,” Ms. Owusu-Ekuful said.

Big Data architecture also takes into consideration the data generated and stored within the private sector to ensure there is seamless sharing of data across both private and public sectors.

The Big Data regime is expected to bring transparency and efficiency to the way data is utilised. The built-in artificial intelligence component will ensure real-time updates of the different models for different stakeholders.

“The underlying infrastructure to ensure that we get more value out of this data ecosystem we are building is also being improved,” she said.

The government will then be able to make policy decisions based on data science and communicate effectively to citizens who will have access to the same data. This should improve the trust relationship between government and citizenry.

For instance, GIFEC through the rural telephony project is extending connectivity to the most rural parts of communities with shared community base stations, so as to enable all telco providers to provide services for rural folks without the CAPEX overhead on their part. This will facilitate access to the data ecosystem.

According to the WDR2021, this ecosystem includes data infrastructure policies, laws and regulations, economic policies as well as data institutions for effective implementation of these enabling frameworks. These building blocks of data governance together constitute a new social contract that seeks to deliver the potential value of data equitably, while fostering trust by safeguarding against data misuse.

  • Police seeks court ruling on time and location of Arise Ghana protest

The Police are seeking a court ruling on the time and location of an intended protest by a group, Arise Ghana.

This, the Service said has become necessary “due to the lack of agreement between the Police and the organisers on the time for the demonstration and location for their planned picketing.”

The Court is expected to hear the case on June 27. The Police in a statement on Sunday said it informed Arise Ghana on June 22 of its intention to proceed to court on the time and location of their demonstration.

Arise Ghana had earlier informed the Police of its intention to demonstrate and picket in front of the Jubilee House on the night of June 28 and 29.

The purpose of the protest is to demonstrate against worsening economic conditions in the country.

The Police subsequently invited the group to a meeting to discuss the time and location of the planned demonstration.

At the meeting, the Police urged the Group to conclude its protest by nightfall to ensure the safety of the demonstrators.

But the Group on June 22 responded to the Police that “they are unable to change the time of the demonstration.”

This compelled the Police to head to court for a resolution on the matter.

“The police have had no option but to submit the process to the court for a determination,” the Police statement read.

The Service assured the organisers of the protest and Ghanaians of its readiness to “provide security for demonstration once the matters are determined by the court.”

  • Govt likely to miss ¢4.5bn e-levy target -IMANI report

The government may not meet its target of raising some ¢4.5 billion from the Electronic Transaction Levy, as about 83% of Ghanaians have reduced their mobile money transactions since the introduction of the levy.

This is according to a survey report released by IMANI Centre for Policy and Education in collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).

“About 83% or 8 in ten respondents indicated that their volume of transactions has changed since the implementation of the e-levy in May 2022. Of this number, about 47% indicated that they had reduced the number of mobile money transactions by about 51% to 100%. Our findings suggest that the official 24% attrition rate, which the government estimates for the first three to six months following the introduction of the e-levy, is likely to be much higher.”

“This finding implies that the forecasted GH¢4.5 billion (GHS¢60 million per month) e-levy revenue target for 2022 is unlikely to be attained given the strong consumer backlash and people finding alternative means of undertaking financial transactions,” portions of the survey said.

The research, which interviewed 1,677 respondents across the country, was aimed at determining the impact of the e-levy on Ghanaians and the coping mechanisms Ghanaians had adopted since its passage in May this year.

Sampled respondents indicated that they had found alternative ways of avoiding the e-levy which included “carrying physical cash (43.8%), using the mainstream commercial banks (18.1%), and exploiting loopholes in the system by collaborating with mobile money vendors to allow cash out (20.7%).”

The majority of respondents who are opposed to the levy feel that the government could reduce its expenditure to raise more revenue.

“32% of those not supporting the e-levy indicated that the government could cut down on wasteful expenditures such as Land Cruiser V8 cars, allowances, conferences, and travel. It is apparent here that
many citizens (72.6%) feel that the government already collects enough taxes and should prudently manage the expenditure side of the equation.”

The government commenced the implementation of the levy on May 1, 2022, after its initial announcement in the 2022 budget.

It was reduced from 1.75% to 1.5% following protests from various stakeholders.

The reduction was considered insufficient by groups that were calling for the levy to be scrapped.

The government had hoped to rake in about GH¢7 billion from the collection of the 1.5% levy on mobile money and other electronic transactions, but the figure was revised downwards to about GH¢4 billion recently.

  • Can Akufo-Addo switch flights in the sky? – Presidential staffer ‘attacks’ Ablakwa

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Hon Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa’s recent write-up on President Akufo-Addo’s use of luxurious private jet on foreign trips appears to have ruffled an aide of the President.

Presidential Staffer and Head of Social Media Team at the Presidency, Charles Nii Teiko Tagoe, attacked Ablakwa describing him as an unrepentant liar using some very unsavoury words.

    Ultra-luxurious Airbus Charter

The NDC MP, via a social media post on June 23, claimed “after pretending he was a changed man by flying commercial on his last two trips to the US and the UK,” the President “returned to his grossly insensitive and reckless ways of profligate traveling in ultra-luxurious charters.”

He alleged the trip is costing the country in excess of GHC4 million.

According to him, President Akufo-Addo ordered a top-of-the-range and most expensive aircraft— the Airbus ACJ319, registered as D-Alex for his recent trip to Belgium and Rwanda; “at a conservative bill of €480,000.00. The 480,000 Euros which is derived from 21 hours of total flight time plus other industry charges works out to some 4.1million Ghana Cedis at current exchange rate”.

    Expensive Dental Chiselling Yet

But in a rather feisty denial posted on his Facebook wall, the Presidential Staffer stressed there was no way the President could have travelled to Belgium on a chartered private jet from Ghana, since he personally saw him board a commercial Air France aircraft.

Cheekily, he questioned whether the NDC MP was perhaps suggesting “the pilot stopped in midair for Akufo-Addo to use a parachute to jump off James Bond style onto a private jet flying by.

His post read in parts: “On Sunday at 7:30 pm, I Charles Nii Teiko Tagoe, was at the Accra Kotoka International Aiport to see President Akufo-Addo and his team off. I saw Mr. President with my own eyes when he was boarding Air France and it took off.

“A baby with sharp teeth is always a baby with sharp teeth even after several expensive dental chiselling,” he added.

    Jubilee House Rebuttal

Meanwhile, the Presidency has officially refuted the North Tongu MP’s claims describing them as “inaccurate”.

The Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin in a statement said “these claims by the North Tongu MP are not accurate, and as a Member of Parliament, I was hoping he would have been factual and truthful in his claims, and resisted the urge to engage in propaganda,” Mr Arhin stated, adding the President travelled to Belgium onboard an Air France Commercial Flight (AF0584).

  • Parliament approves €74.1 million loan agreement for Tarkwa Water Project

A buyer’s credit facility agreement worth EUR 74.1 million for the Tarkwa Water Supply Project has been approved by Parliament.

A commercial contract worth €65 million plus the associated €9.1 million Credendo premium for the Belgian Export Credit Guarantee makes up the total.

The Project involves KBC Bank NV and Commerzbank AG (as arrangers and original lenders) are involved (as agent).

By increasing the capacity of the existing Bonsa Water Supply System and extending service to neighbouring communities like Bonsa/Bonsaso, Bankyem, Charliekrom, Efuanta, Kwabedu, Mantrem, Agona Wassaw, and Nsuta, this project aims to improve the availability of potable water to the people of Tarkwa and the surrounding area.

Tamso, Fanti Mines, Senyaekurase, Akyempem, Simpa, Dompin-Papase, Brofroyedu, Atoabo, Aboso, the University of Mines and Technology, and other communities make up the rest.

To meet the current demand of 15,000m3/day (3.3MGD) and the projected water demand for the Municipality in 2040, the Project will increase the capacity of the existing water supply system from 2.8m3/day (0.6MGD) to 27,000m3/day (6MGD).

Upon handing over each fully functional component to the client, a 12-month defect liability period will begin counting down from the project’s anticipated completion date of 36 months.

Parliamentary Finance Committee Chairman Kwaku Agyeman Kwarteng, who introduced the motion to approve the loan, argued that the Committee, after reviewing the Agreement in detail, was convinced that the Facility, if approved, would help expand access to water in Tarkwa and its surrounding areas.

The motion was seconded by Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, the Ranking Member for the Finance Committee, who said that they had been informed that the Government of Ghana would be paying a commitment fee of 0.4% and an upfront fee of 1% to support the Tarkwa Water Supply Project.

“Mr Speaker, my concern relates to the fact that the Government of Ghana is taking a loan of €65 million but we are paying an insurance premium of €9.1 million,” he said.

“Mr Speaker, this means that the insurance for the facility alone is 14 percent of the loan amount, I recognise that, this is high but I will only urge the Ministry of Finance going forward to start working on our insurance premium.”

“Mr Speaker, it looks as if Ghana is paying so much insurance on some of these export credit agency loans.”

The loan itself, he said, was inexpensive, but the insurance premiums were something Ghanaians should be concerned about.

He also voiced his displeasure over the fact that the Finance Ministry had not conducted a value for money audit prior to the loan’s implementation.

The Majority Leader, Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, agreed with the Ranking Member on the value for money audit and said that it was time for Parliament to start using the services of experts to conduct such audits before approving loans.

  • Inability to balance on one leg indicates early death

The inability to stand on one leg for 10 seconds after the age of 50 could indicate an early death is on the horizon, new research suggests.

Researchers found that people who failed the simple balance test had double the risk of dying from any cause in the next 10 years.

Nearly one in six of the poor balancers died within a decade, the study reported, compared to just one in 22 of those who passed the test.

The experts made allowances for other conditions that can influence the ability to balance, such as ill health or obesity, and found that even when those factors were taken into account, inability to complete the task raised the risk of death by 84 per cent.

One-leg standing time is a measure of postural instability, which some experts believe might go deeper than physical strength, and actually be a consequence of the presence of brain issues.

Although private healthcare providers often include balance checks in routine health tests, researchers say it should be used more widely.

The author of the study, Dr Claudio Gil Araujo, of Clinimex Exercise and Sports Medicine in Brazil, said: “The 10 second balance test provides rapid and objective feedback for the patient and health professionals regarding static balance.

“The test adds useful information regarding mortality risk in middle-aged and older men and women.”

Unlike aerobic fitness and muscle strength and flexibility, balance tends to be reasonably well preserved until people reach their 60s, when it starts to wane relatively rapidly.

One of the reasons balance tests are not more widely used is because there have been few studies linking performance to health outcomes.

For the current study, 1,702 participants aged 5175 were asked to undertake a balance test and then monitored between February 2009 and December 2020.

    Inability doubles every five years

Around one in five failed to stand on one leg for 10 seconds, with the inability to do more or less doubling every increase in five years of age.

While just five per cent of the 51 to 55 year olds could not manage the test, more than a third of the 66 to 70 year olds could do it.

In general, those who failed the test had poorer health: a higher proportion were obese, and/or had heart disease, high blood pressure, and unhealthy blood fat profiles. And type 2 diabetes was 3 times as common in the failure group.

However after accounting for age, sex, and underlying conditions, an inability to stand unsupported on one leg for 10 seconds with a near doubling risk of death in the next decade.

Previous studies have shown that an inability to stand on one leg for more than 20 seconds is associated with microbleeds and “silent” strokes.

Silent strokes, or lacunar infarctions, are known to increase the risk of both full-blown strokes and dementia.

The research was published by the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

Management of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has announced that the Ministry of Energy (MoE) has permitted the Oil Company to negotiate a lease agreement to refine crude oil with a private investor, Decimal Capital Ltd.

TOR in a press release stated that the “Decimal Capital Ltd. proposal emerged as the most appropriate to meet the needs of the Refinery among the host of proposals that were presented.”

According to TOR, the deal “is expected to boost the local supply of refined oil products and help stabilize the Ghana Cedi, in the lace of the ongoing international oil market crisis.”

They noted that “A local Transactional Advisor has been contracted by TOR to lead the negotiations in formulating the lease agreement, which is expected to be completed over the next three to four weeks.”

“The investment partner is expected to provide funding for a first phase, which will bring the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) of TOR back on stream to refine about 45.000 barrels per day in the next few months,” parts of the release stated.

TOR noted that the agreement will “contribute significantly to improving fuel security” in the country.

“Production from TOR can contribute about a third of the current monthly consumption of diesel, and the full requirement of the Aviation Turbine Kerosene (ATK) and Fuel Oil needs of the country.”

They added that “Output from Phase One of this partnership project will be used to revamp the Residual Fluid Catalytic Cracker (RFCC) and other associated units of the Company, to maximize production from the Refinery.”

  • Mary Mensah: ‘I will revive the GJA chapters to make them more vibrant’

An aspiring Organising Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mary Mensah, has promised to revive the GJA chapters in all media organisations.

That, she explained, would re-energise and make the association more transparent, and easily accessible to win back the confidence of its members.

Ms Mensah who is the Foreign and Supplement Editor of the Daily Graphic, and the incumbent Public Affairs Officer of the GJA said re-energizing the chapters will also enable the public to build back trust in the association.

The duties of the organising secretary of the association include ensuring that existing branches and chapters are active and supervising the setting up of new ones among others.

    Chapters in media houses

Apart from the Daily Graphic chapter, which has been strong over the years, all the other chapters have virtually folded up, making it difficult for members who needed assistance or are facing challenges to have their issues promptly addressed.

Chapters play a very crucial role in the association as they act as a liaison between members and the GJA Secretariat, bringing them to the doorstep of the association for effective communication and resolving of issues.

“Our over 70-year-old association has gone through serious challenges over the years but is still standing, giving a clear indication that if all members come on board, the GJA will once again be the citadel of professional excellence in Ghana, Africa and beyond,” Ms Mensah said.

    Capacity building

Capacity building is dear to the heart of Ms Mensah, and with deep-rooted contacts, when given the nod, she will source for funding from the various embassies, missions, institutions and civil society organisations for periodic training and retraining of members, especially female journalists to enable them to sharpen their knowledge and communication skills.

Ms Mensah is a born leader, goal-oriented person, unifier, displays honesty and discretion, meticulous with work, has a good eye for detail, as well as organisational, professional and communication skills.

    Critical role of journalists

Ms Mensah indicated that journalism as a profession played a critical role in national development “as we do not only inform, educate and entertain but we are also the conscience of society”.

According to the aspiring organising secretary, by effectively playing our roles, we would help shape the minds of society.

“This places on each journalist a huge responsibility to play his or her role in strict adherence to professional ethics and values, including upholding the principles of objectivity, fairness and balance in our news judgement and reportage,” she stated.

    Centre of excellence

Ms Mensah said no executive member of the association could work in isolation as the GJA was teamwork, hence she would support the other executive members to transform the press centre and make it a centre of excellence and a one-stop shop for all media activities by capitalising on her communication skills to help market the association on all fronts.

In her view, though media practitioners in Ghana had played their normative roles quite well, there was still room for improvement, especially in the area of training and retraining of members.

    New positive image

“Recent events have cast a shadow over the association and we need to create a new positive image, and by so doing encourage the rank and file of the association to be professional and circumspect in their day-to-day activities,” Ms Mensah said.

She added that if she was given the mandate, she would make the GJA more attractive in order to get more committed members on board.

She said there was the need to enforce our Code of Ethics and to revive the Committee on Ethics to sanction errant journalists, name and shame them, and deny them invitation to official programmes or functions.

    Unionisation

Ms Mensah said she would continue with the effort of the unionisation of the association to strengthen the bargaining position for higher renumeration.

“It is my candid view that the effective implementation of these key points will go a long way to move the association from where it currently finds itself to a position of greater influence and impact on society,” she pointed out.

She is the Convener of the Association of Women in the Media (ASWIM) and passionate about empowering female journalists by training and capacity building. She is strong-willed, articulate and a unifier.

Vote wisely and vote Ms Mary Mensah as the Organising Secretary of the GJA for effective planning and organisation.

  • E-Levy: 8 out of 10 Ghanaians have changed MoMo transaction behavior Study

Majority of Ghanaians are said to have changed their behavior towards the electronic transfer of funds since the E-Levy kicked in back in May this year.

According to a study, 83% of the populace felt compelled to do so in order to adjust to the limits introduced by the said levy as far as their livelihoods are concerned.

These were part of research findings on the effect of the new tax slapped on citizens geared towards shoring up revenue for the government.

The IMANI Digital Financial Services Research Project looked into the impact of the 1.5% tax on the coping mechanisms thereof.

“To assess the impact of the e-levy on the use of digital financial services, we first assessed how often people use digital financial services accounts (such as mobile money) in a typical week and then asked further questions on how it has affected the volume of mobile money transactions they make.”

“Of this number, about 47% indicated that they had reduced the number of mobile money transactions by about 51% to 100%,”

“Another 25% indicated that they had reduced their transactions by about 10% to 50%. Only about 1.6% of respondents indicated that their transaction volumes have stayed or increased their volume.”

Meanwhile, in terms of the regularity of transfers, the results were even.

The June 22 report also found that “about 31% of respondents indicated that they make between 1-2, 3-5 or more than five transfers per week.”

  • Meghan Markle sends snacks and coffee to women campaigning for safe gun laws

Meghan Markle praised the work of women campaigning for safer gun laws — and sent them some “delicious and appreciated” treats to keep them fueled.

“@MomsDemand volunteers and staff have been working around the clock for weeks, so it was moving to receive such a supportive note – and snacks! – from the Duchess of Sussex today,” Watts shared on Twitter along with a photo of the note.

Watts later followed up with another tweet: “Lots of questions about the snacks! Donuts, bagels w/the works, coffee, cookies, etc… Delicious and appreciated.”

“Good afternoon ladies!” the mom of two — son Archie, 3, and daughter Lilibet, 1 — wrote. “To each of you and your fearless leader, Shannon, a huge thank you for the work you are doing to keep our kids, families, and communities safe.”

She continued, “Please know that while you may feel exhausted by your endless hours of dedication to this cause, I hope you feel energized in knowing that the work you’re doing is vital and so deeply appreciated. As a mom, as a friend, thank you so much!”

Meghan, 40, signed the letter with her first name in her recognizable penmanship (she once worked as a professional calligrapher!), above a typed “Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex.”

Moms Demand Action describes itself as a “grassroots movement of Americans fighting for public safety measures that can protect people from gun violence. We pass stronger gun laws and work to close the loopholes that jeopardize the safety of our families.”

  • My son worked as a security guard and a cleaner to be disciplined McDan

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the McDan Shipping Company Dr. Daniel McKorley, has disclosed that in order to instil empathy and discipline in his first son, he made him start work as a Security Guard.

He wanted his son to understand the rudiments of serving and therefore had to make him start from the lowest to the highest rank in the company.

From a Security Guard, his son, he says, was promoted to be a cleaner and moved through all the ranks until he got to where he is.

McDan was speaking on Accra-based Joy Prime when he made this known.

He believes that instilling discipline in children should not be the macho type but rather give them the understanding of why they need to be disciplined.

“My son, for instance, was supposed to go to the university, but I said he should sit at home for one year. I told him to go and start work in my company as a security guard. He saw the trend of learning how to be disciplined. I always teach my children how to serve because they are sports personalities, and all of them play tennis.

“The boys play football. He started work in my company as a Security guard; he moved as a cleaner. Right now, he is a big boy. So for me, teaching discipline is not the macho type of discipline but the soft skill discipline. I have ten kids, and I never say stop twice because the second stop, you’ll receive some lashes. It worked for me; it might not work for somebody else.”

  • Well ensure govt prioritizes school feeding caterers needs Bagbin

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has emphasised the need for challenges with the national school feeding programme to be quickly resolved.

In recent times, there has been a running battle between caterers of the programme and authorities over the cost of feeding per student.

In a bid to resolve the challenge, the Speaker paid a surprise visit to the National Buffer Stock Company and the National School Feeding Programme.

“I decided to spring this surprise to see on the ground how these agencies are struggling to cope with the pressure. I am trying to understand the challenges they are experiencing and how we can support them to do their work. It is a national issue that I did not want to be taken along partisan lines. We pass the laws and approve the budget, and therefore we should be on top to assist the government to put their priorities right.”

Caterers nationwide boycotted cooking weeks ago over outstanding allowances owed to them by the government.

Caterers in Savannah, Volta, Western North, Oti, Bono, Ahafo, Bono East and North-East regions were subsequently paid by the government after several protests.

However, some school feeding caterers in the Western Region recently picketed at the offices of the School Feeding Programme Secretariat in Accra, agitating over the non-payment of monies owed them for preparing meals for pupils.

  • Presidential spouses’ salary: Supreme Court postpones ruling again to July 27

The Supreme Court has for the second time failed to deliver its judgement in a case challenging payment of salaries to spouses of the President and Vice President.

The court now says it will deliver its judgement on July 27.

The Court previously indicated it was delivering its decision on May 4 and July 22.

Two MPs Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor of South Dayi, Dr. Clement Apaak of Builsa South and private citizen Frederick Nii Commey filed the action against the Attorney General.

The Committee had recommended that the First Lady be paid a salary equivalent to a Cabinet Minister who is a Member of Parliament (MP) while her husband is in office and the payment of a salary equivalent to 80% of the salary of a Minister of State who is a Member of Parliament (MP) if the spouse served one full term as President or 100% of the salary of a Minister of State who is a Member of Parliament (MP) if the spouse served two or more full terms as President.

The Committee further suggested that the Second Lady be paid a salary equivalent to a Cabinet Minister who is not an MP while her husband is in office and the payment of a salary equivalent to 80% of the salary of a Minister of State who is not a Member of Parliament (MP) if the spouse served one full term as President or 100% of the salary of a Minister of State who is a Member of Parliament (MP) if the spouse served two or more full terms as Vice President.

But the plaintiffs say Ntiamoa-Baidu Emoluments Committee did not have the power to recommend payment of salaries or provision of any facilities to the first and second lady.

On the back of this, Mr. Dafeamekpor told pressmen the court must begin to adopt technology to publish judgements to avoid inconveniencing parties with such adjournments.

Meanwhile, First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo and wife of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, Samira Bawumia have both returned to the state, salaries paid to them in 2021.

  • Physician Assistants not doctors – Medical and Dental Council

The Medical and Dental Council has admonished Physician Assistants (PA) not to assume the role of medical doctors in order to avoid lawsuits and mishaps in healthcare delivery.

By law, Physician Assistants refer to three distinct groups of healthcare professionals trained in the medical model to practice medicine and dentistry under supervision.

They are P.A-medical also known as medical assistants; PA-Dental, also known as community oral health officers and PA-Anesthesia, also known as certified registered nurse anesthetists.

The council gave the admonishment when it inducted 538 newly qualified professionals in Accra who had met all the academic requirements.

    Supervision

They are expected to complete an additional one-year internship programme with any accredited health facility to be permanently placed on the professional register of the council.

Speaking at the induction ceremony in Accra yesterday[June 22, 2022], the Chairman of the Board of the Medical and Dental Council, Professor Paul Kwame Nyame, reminded the professionals that they were not medical doctors, and therefore, had to deliver on their mandate under strict supervision to enhance healthcare.

“Physician assistants are expected to examine, prescribe and request for diagnostic tests under the supervision of physicians or surgeons,” he said.

He said they could work independently, especially in rural areas without doctors, but ultimately under supervision.

Physician Assistants are not medical officers but rather a middle level cadre of healthcare providers. PAs can work independently, especially in rural areas with or without doctors, but ultimately working under supervision.

    Scope of practice

Professor Nyame said the council had recently spent a lot of time engaging stakeholders in the development of a comprehensive scope of practice document for all categories of Physician Assistants — Medical, Dental & Anesthesia.

He said the document spelt out the limit to which the PA could go, or what they could do and what they could not do.

“Referral is important when you realise that your case management goes beyond your capabilities.

“Your training should allow you to recognise cases that are not within your scope but you should be able to provide initial treatment for the relief of pain and then refer to the nearest hospital that can manage the case effectively,” he said.

He said the medical and dental council would closely monitor their adherence to the tenets of the document to avoid the professionals attracting legal suits.

    Future requirement

He said the council had observed over the years that PAs with nursing background had added advantage in trading than those who took the course directly from senior high schools.

He said the council would, therefore, in the not-too-distant future, make post-basic qualification a prerequisite for entry into a PA training programme.

The Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, in a speech read on his behalf, said the 538 newly qualified PAs would augment the current strength of about 6,642 PAs serving in various parts of the country.

He said in keeping with the high regard that society accorded to healthcare professionals, the society rightly expected a correspondingly high standard of professionalism and conduct.

“As a consequence, the object of Council as provided for in the Part II of the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act, 2013, (Act 857) is to secure in the public interest the highest standards in the training and practice of medicine and dentistry in Ghana.

“Regrettably, often the allure of specialised knowledge and success, if not properly managed, tend to result in bloated egos or inconsiderate conduct and may make one lose his humanity — the capacity to care,” he said.

  • My mother gave me a year to prove myself or quit music – Sarkodie

Sarkodie has disclosed that his mother, Emma Ewurama Maame Aggrey, was among the few people who believed in his talent at a young age. However, she was a bit skeptical, the reason she gave him a year to prove himself or focus on his education.

Ghana’s most decorated rapper, Michael Owusu Addo, better known as Sarkodie has attributed a major part of his success story to his family, especially his elderly sister. The latter connected him to big artistes in the industry at the beginning of his music career.

“My whole family supported it, my big sister was one of the people that held my hand into the industry. She started making friends in the industry and introduced me to already known artistes. My family made a major role,” he said.

According to Sark, his hard work earned him a major hit song before the one-year deadline his mother gave. She felt proud and never regretted her decision when music lovers finally accepted his son.

“In Africa, parents don’t see music as a thing to go into because of how some of us turn out when we go into it…my dad wasn’t around. It was mainly my mum, she played both parts. My mum was very strong and she was really strict.

“She gave me a year to prove myself if this is what I really want to do and thank God it was the same year I had one of my biggest records. In that same year, she was in a taxi and the driver was talking about her son. She wasn’t aware that I was out there. He didn’t believe her when she said she was my mother,” the rapper disclosed in an interview on ‘Podcast and Chill MACG’ in South Africa.

The 36-year-old rapper is now counted among the country’s top musicians whose longevity is worth acknowledging. Sarkodie has won several awards both locally and internationally. He was the first recipient of the BET ‘Best International Flow’ in 2019.
