  • Foreign Ministry intervenes in IGP, British High Commissioner diplomacy disagreement

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has intervened in the public diplomatic disagreements between British High Commissioner, Harriet Thompson, and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare.

The IGP had disagreed with the British High Commissioner’s comment on the arrest of the convenor of the #FixTheCountry Movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor for a motoring offence.

The IGP in a four page letter had argued that the comment by the Diplomat was in contravention with the Vienna Convention on International Diplomacy by commenting a Ghanaian internal affair.

In a statement issued Tuesday [June 1, 2022], the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration said it had noted with “concern the intense public debate that has been generated by the communication between the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the British High Commissioner in Accra.”

“In line with the general diplomatic practice of communicating with diplomatic Missions, preferably through direct engagement, the Ministry wishes to remain  circumspect on its pronouncements on the matter.”

“We have therefore initiated contact with both the British High Commissioner and Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to resolve the issue at stake.”

“The Ministry wishes to underline its commitment to the strong historical bonds between Ghana and the United Kingdom, which through the years, have been deepened by, among others, the exchange of high-level visits on both sides as well as increased cooperation on trade, investments, and security.”

“We take this opportunity to reaffirm the bonds of friendship and cooperation between our two countries,” the statement added.

  • I ordered the flogging of sex tape youth — Wa Naa makes U-turn

After denying knowledge of flogging two persons, barely 24 hours ago, Na Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, the Overlord of the Waala Traditional Council has stated that their flogging was under his orders.

The two were allegedly involved in a sex video scandal that went viral.

He said it formed part of measures the Council including opinion leaders in the municipality instituted to fight the immoral and deviant behaviour among the youth in the area in recent times.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Wa, to personally react to the said video in circulation on social media and for him to give reasons for denying that the youth took arbitrary action in flogging the boy and the girl without his concern.

He explained that flogging was part of the regulations put in place to instill discipline in the youth, who in recent times put up some behaviour detrimental to the well-being of society.

“Beside the flogging, parents of the boy and the girl will also agree to let the two get married and stay as a couple to serve as deterrent to the youth and to live upright lives,” he said

The Wa Naa said the regulations were aimed at allowing decency, morality, and peace to prevail in the Municipality to attract investors for the teeming youth to get employed.

“The measure will also let people who come to Wa to enjoy their stay and outsiders who have their relatives will not be worried about their safety,” he said.

He said he and his elders as well as other opinion leaders would not shun their responsibilities but would ensure that Wa remained a peaceful town for all to stay.

On Tuesday, May 31, Naa Kadri Ibrahim, the spokesperson for Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, the Overlord of the Wala Traditional Council condemned the flogging on behalf of the chief.

He said the act could only drag the reputation of the palace into disrepute and gave the assurance that the perpetrators of the barbaric act would be fished out to face the full rigours of the law.

The admission of Wa Naa that he gave his blessing to the flogging contradicts his spokesperson.

  • 320 recovered Pantang patients reintegrate with families

Dr Frank Baning, the Medical Director of Pantang Hospital, has announced that about 320 recovered patients have been reunited with their families

Dr Baning told Graphiconline.com that, the hospital administration relied on community psychiatric units located within the various assemblies to work in partnership with the Social Welfare Department offices across the country to reintegrate the cured patients into society.

Prior to the reintegration 0f the 320 patients, the Medical Director of Pantang stated that the hospital had challenges reconnecting patients who had fully recovered with their families.

Some of the challenges, he says also stems from refusal of family members to reconnect with patients.

According to him, the recovered patients represented about 70 per cent of the 500 patients who were on admission at the facility before 2016.

“We do have these challenges of families refusing to come for their patients when they have recovered but we continue to develop the means to send the patients home rather than keeping them in a restricted facility.

“We have very good community psychiatry and social welfare units at the hospital that liaise with the various districts across the country to ensure patients cured reconnect with their families,” he said.

He, however, stated that through its community psychiatric and social welfare units the hospital has been able to put in place measures to intensify and enhance efforts to reintegrate the patients with their families through investigations on the background of patients.

Dr Baning further added that the hospital as part of efforts to unite families has also introduced programs to orient relatives on how to manage the patient.

“Sometimes, it is not the fault of the families; they just do not know how to manage and deal with the person. They lack understanding on how to manage the person because they are already frustrated.

“And so, we do our best to orient them on how to manage the patient before we officially discharge the patient to them and we also do periodic follow-ups to ensure that patients are well taken care of,” he said.

     Support for recovered patients

The Medical Director of Pantang Hospital  mentioned that while on admission, were provided with a sustainable source of livelihood so that when discharged they would not become a burden to their families.

“The Social Welfare Unit does an assessment to ascertain those that are trainable and those that are not. With some we need to engage a third person or a contact person in the family and equip that person to be able to care for the patient in question,” he said.

In his quest to help patient transition smoothly into society, the medical director said the unit had an engagement with the German Development Agency (GIZ) to support patients who were undergoing skills training at the facility.

“GIZ recently asked the unit to provide a list of patients and their details and what could be done or required to help them train,” he said.

Dr Baning called on Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA) for financial support for recovered patients.

The commencement of the factory, he says will generate the needed jobs for residents in the regions and sugar cane growers.

“This is no political talk. I will not play politics with the people I serve, there are a lot of works going on at the factory right now.

“A three million litre reservoir has been constructed. The roof of the factory has been changed, and a raw sugar warehouse has been built to store raw unrefined sugar for the processing,” he added.

Meanwhile, the factory has not worked since its commissioning in 2016.
In February this year, President Akufo-Addo gave his assurance that the Komenda Sugar Factory will start operations in April.

He projected that the company after it commencement will inject $28 million into the factory between 2020 and 2023.
Out of the amount, $11 million was to go into sugarcane cultivation; $6 million to upgrade plant and machinery, and $11 million as working capital to bring the ailing factory back on its feet.

  • Bring back lithovit fertiliser – Farmer pleads at Opuni-Agongo trial

Mr. Thomas Amo Amankwaa, a renowned cocoa farmer in Berekum has made a passionate appeal to government to reintroduce the supply of Lithovit liquid fertilizer to farmers.

According to him, the years that lithovit was supplied to farmers by CHED of COCOBOD, they recorded bumper harvest.

In his case, for instance, his production jumped from 1,600kg of cocoa beans to 4,600kg when he applied Lithovit liquid fertilizer during the 2015/2016 cocoa season.

Mr. Amo Amankwaa has been testifying in the trial of former COCOBOD Chief Executive Dr Stephen Opuni and businessman Seidu Agongo who have been accused of, among others, causing financial loss to the state. It is the case of prosecution that Lithovit liquid fertilizer purchased under the tenure of Dr. Opuni was a waste of resources, because the state did not get value for money.

The state called seven witnesses but none was a farmer to testify to the efficacy or otherwise of Lithovit when it was applied on his or her farm.

Dr. Opuni in his defence has called three witnesses so far with two being cocoa farmers.

Mr. Amo Amankwaa, who is the third defence witness has four different cocoa farms: Two of the farms are located at Subronou in the Ahafo region: one at Biadian covering an area of 13.6 acres; there is another one at Yaakrom in the Dormaa West District and covers an area of 21 acres.

The witness is the second cocoa farmer to have so far testified in the over four-year trial, and have all testified in favour of the accused persons. Whilst the first described Lithovit as a “messiah”, Mr. Amankwaa calls it a “great saviour”.

Being cross-examined by lawyer Nutifafa Nutsukpui, who is holding brief for Benson Nutsukpui, on Thursday, May 26 at the High Court in Accra, the witness asserted that based on personal experience, the efficacy of the Lithovit liquid fertilizer was way above other fertilizers he and his colleague farmers applied on their cocoa farms.

He recounted the frustrations of cocoa farmers when government stopped supplying them Lithovit, and appealed for it to be brought back.

“My lord, we went to CHED office to demonstrate for the litovit fertiliser to be brought back because it helped us.The COCOBOD officials told me that this will not have any effect and that if we want we can go to radio stations, and so I went to Akonoba FM in Sunyani, Chris Fm in Berekum, Ahenfo fm in Berekum and Shalom FM in Berekum to appeal to the government to bring back Lithovit fertiliser because it helps give us good yield in our cocoa farms.

“My lord, I am here not because of anything but to plead with the government to bring back Lithovit fertiliser because it really helped us.”

Mr. Amankwaa has since tendered in evidence his passbook which contains details of all products received and the quality of cocoa produced by him as well as other information from Licenced Buying Companies.

The former COCOBOD Chief Executive, Dr. Stephen Opuni and businessman Seidu Agongo as well as Agricult Ghana Limited, are facing over 25 charges, including defrauding by false pretences, willfully causing financial loss to the state, corruption by public officers and contravention of the Public Procurement Act.

Sitting continues on Monday, May 30, 2022.

  • Top 5 ways to improve company communication

Talking about the importance of effective communication in business is like saying that water is wet and fire is hot. It’s a truism that everyone knows. However despite the obviousness, many people don’t pay proper attention to it. And this is a huge mistake.

    Let’s turn to statistics:

    • 28% of employees cite ineffective workplace communication as the main cause of task deadlines.
    • 86% of employees and managers believe that the main reason for failure in any case or project is poorly constructed communication.
    • Poor communication costs companies, on average, $62.4 million annually. This amount includes low productivity, overwork, missed opportunities and sales.

But this is all just theory. Now let’s get directly to the topic of the article. How do you improve communication in the workplace?

Implementing Comprehensive Solutions in the Workplace

It’s impossible to make communication effective if some employees (or even whole departments) use a different communication tool than the others. This has become especially important recently, when more and more employees are moving to a remote or hybrid mode of work.

Cloud telephony brings everyone involved into a single network, no matter where people are. At any moment they can connect to a discussion, form a request or discuss a new project.

Of course, when we talk about universal solutions, we do not only talk about telephony. This includes the CRM system, which can be changed by an employee from anywhere in the world, the possibility of video conferencing on a single platform with easy connectivity, and even support for different devices.

If you can access your work tools not only from your computer but also from a phone or tablet, it will help you to speed up your questions and tasks considerably.

    Not Arranging Useless Meetings

As different as normal communication and business conversation are, so different are useful and empty meetings. If used correctly, it is a convenient way to discuss all the issues on the agenda and make a decision. But when used incorrectly, it is a waste of time, energy and nerves. How do you distinguish a good meeting from a bad one? Here’s a sample checklist for a meeting:

    • There’s no way to avoid a meeting. There are no other ways to discuss the issue that has arisen. As practice shows, if there is another solution, it’s better to take it.
    • The meeting is devoted to one topic (agenda) and the whole meeting will discuss only this topic.
    • In the work schedule, the meeting is not first thing on Monday and last thing on Friday. Otherwise, your employees will be thinking not about how to discuss a particular topic but about how they will come home and play at 22Bet or spend time with their families.
    • The meeting has a clear time frame and the discussion ends exactly when it is supposed to.
    • After the discussion, a letter is sent to all meeting participants that summarizes the meeting and lists the major agreements reached.

If the meeting you planned meets all of these parameters, it is truly a useful and productive event.

Understanding the Advantages and Disadvantages of Individual Communication Methods

A difficult issue is best handled face-to-face. It can be as simple as a regular phone call or a video call. On the other hand, it’s silly to put together a formal conference call to convey the idea of something new to an entire team, but that doesn’t change anything fundamentally. An email or messenger message is enough.

The point is to use the method of communication that suits the particular situation. Of course, common sense alone is not enough for this – you’ll have to teach the team and learn for yourself. But believe me, this training will pay off when the effectiveness of the work begins to grow.

    Active Listening Technique

Effective communication is not only about tools and technical implementation. It’s about the presentation and perception of information. Even with the most effective services and in a properly organized meeting, things can go wrong if people do not want to convey information correctly. And the interlocutors are not just listening, but listening as well. In the latter, the technique of active listening is a great help. And here are some tips:

    • When holding a conference it is considered good form to look at the interlocutor on the screen. It would also be great to periodically look into the camera to establish eye contact with the person you are talking to.
    • Be attentive, but at the same time remain calm and relaxed. This is important, in general, for all modes of communication. Your tension will be felt not only when you’re on the phone or on a video call, but even in a letter or in a chat. And this can only turn the interlocutor against you, which will prevent you from coming to any result.
    • If it’s appropriate, politely stop the interlocutor and ask him to clarify or to repeat the last thought. As practice shows, often after a long monologue it turns out that 90% of the speech was not understood by the interlocutor and you have to reconstruct everything in your memory and lose even more time than explaining some of your theses in the flow of speech.

These rules apply to personal conversations as well as to telephone and chat conversations. Be mutually respectful and make sure you are understood correctly. And that’s what our fifth point is about.

    Being Polite

Even if you comply with all four tips above, but do not comply with the banal norms of politeness and respect – even the calmest conversation will be perceived as an attack and aggression. This should be observed at all levels of the company – both horizontally, among employees of the same level, and in the chain manager – subordinate.

The latter is perhaps the most important. It is on how the head will interact with the subordinates and will determine the atmosphere in the team and how the employees themselves will interact with each other. Remember that there are no useless employees. There are only those who are not performing their tasks.

    Summary

Effective communication within the company is the key that will open the door to company growth by increasing employee productivity and increasing their loyalty to the business. Moreover, it greatly improves the customer experience from interacting with you, which will undoubtedly have a positive impact on sales and profits.

Simply put, a well-established communication process is beneficial in both the long and short term.

  • We must stop doomsday prophecies Pentecostal Council backs Police directive

The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) has supported the directive by the Police Administration to religious leaders to desist from communicating prophetic messages that could harm others and disturb the public peace.

The Ghana Police Service, in a statement on Monday, December 27, asked religious group leaders to be measured in their prophetic utterances that may injure the rights of others and public interest as the year draws to a close.

The statement, signed by Supt. Alexander Kwaku Obeng, Director of Public Affairs, said it was a crime for a person to publish or reproduce a statement, rumour, or report, which was likely to disturb the public peace without evidence.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, the Reverend Emmanuel T. Barrigah, the General Secretary of GPCC, said the call by the Police Administration was in order.

“Prophecies in themselves are expected to edify and glorify God and where there is the need to also rebuke those who might have fallen foul of the law of God, we should not hesitate to do so,” he said.

“Where prophecies become a threat or become a prediction of death and harm, there is a question mark on those kinds of prophecies.”

Rev. Barrigah said he could not fathom why end-of-year prophecies were mostly centered on negative issues and not positive ones that would propel national unity and prosperity.

“We must stop those doomsday and death prophecies. Why is it that we can only predict harm and death and not positive things?” he asked.

Rev. Barrigah urged the Christian community to be careful and measured in their celebration of the New Year, bearing in mind the presence of the Omicron variant of the COVID-19.

He said the GPCC had issued a circular to its members, encouraging them to, as much as possible, hold outdoor services to usher in the New Year.

“We have also asked them to ensure that all the preventive protocols, including hand-washing, hand sanitizing, and wearing of nose masks, are strictly observed in addition to sanitizing all the things we use at the church,” he said.

The Police had warned that it was a crime for a person, by means of electronic communications service, to knowingly send communication that is false or misleading and likely to endanger the safety of others.

“A person found guilty under these laws could be liable to a term of imprisonment of up to five years,” the police said.

  • How to Digitize a Company: The Best Tools All Business Owners Need

What software for remote work, collaborative team product and service development, online sales and payment solutions, and process automation can help optimize business processes for the new digital reality?

2021 is marked by optimization of business processes, when extra cramps can cost a company not just profit but life. Business will optimize all its current activities, adjusting or even shaping a new reality in which everything is constantly changing. The key will be digital solutions to help do this. Here’s what digital technologies will not only improve each employee’s productivity but also increase business efficiency.

    Know Your Customer

Today, entrepreneurs have access to a wide range of tools that can be used to digitize all major types of operations. If we talk about sales, CRM (Customer Relationship Management) systems are widely used for this purpose, allowing to systematize information about customers and effectively use various marketing channels.

Such systems make it possible to manage sales funnels, store all information about clients, deals, contracts, form analytics and reports on key indicators. Typically, CRM systems are integrated with telephony, email and other means of communication.

    Analyze It

Next, to tie together all the collected data, you can’t do without setting up end-to-end business analytics.

Collecting data from CRM systems and other places allows you to analyze customer touchpoints, from entry to sale, and disable those advertising channels that aren’t generating revenue. You can set up metrics to monitor activity, to find out what happened today, what customer conversion, where indicators have changed noticeably. You can get this information not in a month but almost immediately.

Suppose you’ve noticed that Apple users don’t check live sports betting offers anymore. Then, you can take action, detect errors, and understand why the conversion has dropped drastically. There are services which help manage mailings, there are settings of automatic chains of letters, there are schedulers for sharing social media posts. You can use different systems, as long as they support all the major social media platforms. This is also one of the important methods of digitalization.

Lots of systems and services are created for this purpose. For example, Aori is helpful for managing online advertising and UniSender is amazing for managing newsletters.

    The Art of Communication

Some services unite all communication channels with clients and allow them to work conveniently with appeals which come in through different online chats, through social networks, or by email. The user receives all the information in one window – where the client came from, what his status is. If different people in the company are responsible for different channels, they can all connect to the system. It becomes a kind of business messenger on the site or in the social networks.

One of such services is JivoChat, a multifunctional online adviser that helps you interact with potential clients through the site, social networks, by phone or email. It allows communicating with customers in chat mode and can be useful for companies which get customers exactly from the Internet. Let’s not forget about bots, they are everywhere now. With them, you can forget about answering the most frequent questions and let your employee complete harder tasks.

    Replacement for the Accountant

Digitalization also affects internal business processes. Where there are sales, there is accounting, contracts and taxes. Small companies can outsource these functions to third-party services. There they can set up “reminders” of deadlines to file certain documents.

    Supervised Projects

There are products that help resolve more complicated business tasks, such as internal company management information systems or project management information systems. These are fully customized services that help go through all phases of project life in a company. This is especially important if the company sells not some simple products but complex integration solutions that are constantly undergoing changes.

Such companies sometimes need to adjust the entire project and production cycle from the business idea to the completion of the project. They have to disassemble the project (product) into many parts. It is unrealistic to tie it all together and keep it in your head or in Excel. Project management systems make it possible to coordinate the stages and make the necessary changes in the process so that project managers are aware of who is at what stage.

    Summary

After all, just a few years ago, it was hard to imagine that modern technology would offer such a wide range of IT tools for digitizing almost all key areas of a company’s activities, including sales, advertising, communications with customers, accounting and legal services, and project management.

In the end, the companies that digitize their processes without loss of quality and convenience for their clients will win. So, many more technological innovations and digital discoveries await us, as the process of digitization of various industries will gain momentum.

  • We shall prevail Sam George to those opposing anti-LGBTQ+ bill

Samuel Nartey George, MP-Ningo Prampram, has indicated that, those who are for the anti-LGBTQ+ bill outnumber those who oppose it.

According to him, their argument is superior to the opposition and they have the facts to support their position.

In a post on his Facebook timeline, Sam Nartey George, who is a lead advocate of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill wrote:

“Those with us and for us far outnumber the few whose consideration is material. We have a superior argument. The facts support our position. We shall prevail.

“The will of the majority of Ghanaians shall prevail against all machinations and schemes. Do not be dismayed with titles or self-proclaimed accolades. They would count for nothing during the debates on the floor of Parliament. That is where the business is.

“We are on course. Victory beckons.”

Some fifteen renowned individuals have sent a memorandum to Parliament to thrash the anti-LGBTQ bill before the house as it violates most of the fundamental human rights of Ghanaians.

The individuals which include legal practitioners and professors stated that aside from violating the key fundamental freedoms under the constitution, the bill also violates the dignity and inviolability of every person guaranteed under Article 21 of the constitution.

“The Bill violates the right to inviolability of the person. It violates virtually all the key fundamental freedoms guaranteed under the Constitution, namely the right to freedom of speech and expression; the right to freedom of thought, conscience and belief; the freedom to practice any religion and to manifest such in practice (which includes the freedom not to practice any religion); the right to assemble, including the freedom to take part in processions and demonstrations; the freedom of association and the right to organize- in essence the fundamental human rights guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution.”

The memo further noted that: “In addition, the provisions of the Bill violates the dignity and inviolability of every person, guaranteed under Article 15; it violates the principle of equality before the law, and the right to freedom from discrimination on grounds of gender, race, colour, ethnic origin, religion, creed or social-economic status, guaranteed under Article 11, as well as the right to privacy guaranteed under Article 18 of the Constitution. In short, the provisions of the Bill are so egregious in their violation of the fundamental human rights and freedoms guaranteed under the Constitution that it beggars belief that it could be introduced as a Bill in the House of Parliament.”

The team pushing for this include Akoto Ampaw, Prof Emerita Takyiwaa Manuh, Prof Kwame KariKari, Prof Kofi Gyimah-Boadi and Prof Audrey Gadzekpo.

The others are Dr. Rose Kutin-Mensah, Dr. Yao Graham, Prof Dzodzi Tsikata, Prof H. Kwasi Prempeh, Kwasi Adu-Amankwah, Dr. Kojo Asante, Akunu Dake, Tetteh Homerku-Adjei, Prof Raymond Atuguba and Kofi Ofei-Nkansah.

  • Is Cristiano Ronaldo’s Signing Really Great for Manchester United?

In what’s arguably the deal of the summer transfer window, Manchester United sensationally resigned Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus more than a decade after the player first left the club.

Ronaldo first joined Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon in 2003, and after a slow start to his career at Old Trafford, the Portuguese went on to become one of the club’s greatest ever players.

Ronaldo scored 118 goals in 292 appearances for United in his initial six-year stint at the club, winning three Premier League titles, one Champions League, one FA Cup and two League Cup crowns.

He also won the Ballon D’Or in 2009, the season he left for Real Madrid.

Ronaldo was great for Manchester United, but it was at Real Madrid where he truly elevated his legend to the point of being considered arguably the greatest players of all-time.

The Portuguese skipper is never one to rest on his oars, and he took up yet another challenge when he moved to Juventus in 2018.

His time at Juve was comparatively underwhelming, but that was by Ronaldo’s ridiculous standards. He still pumped in 101 goals in just over three seasons at the club.

The £12.85 million United paid Juventus to get their man was an absolute bargain, as the Red Devils capitalised on Juve’s desperate financial situation to bring back one of the greatest players of all time.

If Ronaldo is available for that kind of amount, it’s almost a no-brainer that you should go for him.

But how does Ronaldo’s return affect United?

On the surface, it looks like a great signing.

Ronaldo brings with him a winning mentality to a club that is keen to rise above the mediocrity of the last few seasons. The Red Devils have got a global football force with an insatiable desire to score goals and win titles.

Having said that, this isn’t the Ronaldo of 10 years ago. At 36, he is still remarkably super fit, but he is not as productive as he was in his most prolific years.

He is no longer that pacy wing-wizard that could take the game by the scruff of the neck and single-handedly alter the fortunes of his team.

These days, Ronaldo has almost exclusively become a goal scorer and relies a lot more on the quality of those around him.

During his time with Juventus, the Old Lady only made one Champions League quarter final, and crashed out in the Round of 16 in each of his other two full seasons. They also lost their nine-year stranglehold on the Serie A title last season, only managing to scrap into the top four.

It is true that football is a team game and that Ronaldo can hardly be singularly blamed for Juve’s decline, but the fact that he could not inspire the biggest club in Italy to greater success cannot be ignored.

Ronaldo will score his fair share of goals for United- that is what he does- but can he really fire Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men to the title?

Unsurprisingly, with Ronaldo now at Manchester United, the club is getting some more love from bookmakers. Many betting sites around the world, including bookies here in Ghana, expect United to produce a sustained bid for the Premier League title this season.

Solskjaer has all but confirmed that the great man hasn’t come to Old Trafford to sit on the bench, which means two of younger players- Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford- will have to be sacrificed when everyone is fit.

If Ronaldo fires United to the Premier League title, no one will be too bothered about that.

However, should the Red Devils struggle again this season, more questions will be asked about the justification for bringing a 36-year-old Ronaldo back to the club.

  • Baako, Sammy Gyamfi beg Akufo-Addo for presidential pardon for critically ill ex-GYEEDA boss

The editor-in-chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, has tasked authorities at the Nsawam Maximum Security Prison to commence processes to trigger a presidential pardon for jailed boss of defunct Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA), Abuga Pele.

Mr Kweku Baako jnr. believes it is about time such an arrangement is initiated following media reports that the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Chiana-Paga constituency in the Upper East, was critically ill.

He is reportedly been admitted at the Greater Accra Regional hospital formerly Ridge Hospital.

He is said to be in a critical condition at the High Dependency Unit (HDU) of the hospital after he was taken there from the Prison last week.

It is unclear what the hospital is treating the incarcerated politician for. He has so far served more than half of his jail term.

According to the veteran journalist, Mr Pele considering his current condition, needs the gesture.

“Why keep him there if it is a critical condition and I believe so because otherwise, they would not have sent him to the hospital.

Usually, Nsawam Prisons they have a medical facility I mean internal one. The very moment you are moved out of the prison yard to a health facility outside, it means the prison facility is admitting the inadequacy of it medical system relative to what disease or condition you are suffering”, Mr Baako said.

He continued â€œSo they should evaluate it, prepare a report, send it to the appropriate authorities and I believe that a pardon will be a fair idea. That is the way I feel”.

Mr Pele, whose prosecution started under former President John Mahama was jailed six years in 2018 together with businessman Philip Akpeena Assibit, for causing financial loss to the state.

Mr Baako who did not want to go into the issues that led to the incarceration of the two, when he was tempted, said the pardon should purely be on humanitarian ground.

â€œLet us focus on the state of health, it is supposed to be critical condition and let ask the appropriate authorities, to do something on humanitarian ground and pardon. I mean that is my feeling and it is a personal one”, he added.

The request was made on Good Morning Ghana programme on Metropolitan television on Thursday June 03, 2021.

Mr Baako was on the show with the Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Sammy Gyamfi who supported his colleague panel member.

The young lawyer said it will be in order if President Akufo-Addo exercised the power of clemency so that the incarcerated politician can join his family and seek proper medical care. Sammy challenged lawyers for Mr Pele to also pursue the course of getting their client freed.

“I think that the facility where he was rushed to and the medical doctors working on him should prepare a report about his current health condition and share same with the authorities who are concerned with such issues.

I think that it is in order that having served more than half of his prison term, he will be given a remission of his sentence or a presidential pardon and this will not be the first time.

He cited examples in the past where others were pardoned by the then President Kufuor adding the objective upon which Mr Pele was punished has been achieved.

“Under the Kufuor administration when some former government appointees were incarcerated for similar offenses it got to a stage where even President Kufuor, saw the need to give some of them presidential pardon which is provided for in our laws anyway.

I think that, he and the others have been punished enough, the deterrent they wanted to achieve for me has already been achieved.

So on grounds of health, if what we are hearing is anything to go by, I want to join Mr Baako to humbly appeal to the President and the ruling government, to tamper justice with mercy and give him a pardon so that, he can come home, seek medical attention immediately and spend some time with his family.

He is lost so much already”, he concluded.

  • Assin North MPs case: Amaliba withdraws services as lawyer

The Head of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team, Lawyer Abraham Amaliba has withdrawn his service as counsel for the Member of Parliament of Assin North, Joe Gyakye Quayson in the ongoing dual citizenship case.

He has accused Justice Kwasi Boakye, the trial judge of being bias, in a case in which Michael Ankomah Nimfah, a resident of the Assin North Constituency, is challenging the eligibility of Joe Gyakye Quayson as MP.

In the suit, Michael Ankomah Nimfah is alleging that the MP held dual citizenship at the time of filing his nomination to contest the 2020 Parliamentary elections and thus was not qualified.

Lawyer Amaliba failed to substantiate the accusation of bias when given the opportunity, thus his application was refused.

He alleges that on the day the matter came up for settlement of the issues for trial, the presiding judge, Justice Kwasi Boakye, made a comment to the effect that Article 94(2) (a) applies at the time of filing the nomination forms.

Mr. Amaliba explained that although his application was refused, he was still of the conviction that the likelihood of bias still exists, so he could not be a party to such an enterprise.

Speaking to the media after the Court sitting the National Communication Officer for the NDC Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi said it was important that the court allowed for some time to enable the MP to find a new lawyer to defend him.

Meanwhile, the Central Regional Secretary for the New Patriotic Party Richard Takyi Mensah addressing the media after the Court sitting said Lawyer Amaliba intentionally withdrew his service to delay the Court rulling.

The case has been adjourned the case to 8th June 2021.

In court today were some NDC bigwigs including Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, National Democratic National Chairman, Sammy Gyamfi, NDC National Communication Officer Lawyer, Central Regional Vice Chairman, Theophilus Adu Mensah, Lawyer Abraham Amaliba among others.

  • We need problem solvers to end dumsor, compete globally Bishop Agyinasare

The General Overseer of Perez Dome Bishop Charles Agyinasare has challenged Ghanaians especially our leaders to be problem solvers.

The respected man of God said we have seen examples in the past where we had problem-solvers who had a vision for the country and if we follow these examples, we will have people who will solve our problems.

He recounted how the late Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was thinking about Atomic energy when he was in power.

This made Nkrumah build the Atomic Energy Department to help develop nuclear energy in those days.

He said the plan was to make Ghana have different sources of energy and not only depend on the Akosombo dam.

The man of God indicated the vision of Nkrumah shows that we can be problem solvers if we put our minds to it.

He said 60 years ago, Kwame Nkrumah built a dam that was thought not to be necessary but today, it cannot take care of us and we are having dumsor for several years.

He said: “almost 60 years ago, Kwame Nkrumah was thinking about atomic energy for Ghana. He built the Atomic Energy Department and machines that were going to give us nuclear energy those days so that we will not just depend on Akosombo Dam. I mean, this is 60 years ago. So it means that we can be problem solvers.”

“Sixty years ago, Kwame Nkrumah built a dam that was thought not necessary. Now the Akosombo Dam cannot even take care of us.”

  • Mechanic repairing the ambulance used it to convey cement Ambulance Service explains

The National Ambulance Service (NAS) of the Ministry of Health says its preliminary investigation into an incident where an ambulance belonging to the service was used for the purchase and transportation of bags of cement reveals that the act was done by a mechanic working on the vehicle.

A viral video shows a seemingly new ambulance under the one Constituency one Ambulance initiative by the government stationed at Sege was being loaded with bags of cement by some young men.

This act received a lot of backlash on social media with the service being criticized for what is being described as negligence.

But according to the service, the incident which has been captured in a viral video occurred on or around March 26, 2021, while the vehicle with registration number GV 537-20 was in the custody of the suppliers, Service Ghana Autogroup Ltd.

The NAS explained in a statement copied to GhanaWeb that the vehicle was one of the Ambulances being fixed for minor faults by the supplier before it will be received and integrated into the National Ambulance Service fleet.

“The said suppliers had caused the Ambulance to be sent to its garage to address a minor fault. The National Ambulance Service had earlier declined to take custody of the vehicle because of the said fault.

“A mechanic of the said garage (Nana Ofosu Gear Box specialist) after the repairs, drove the ambulance toward the Mallam-Kasoa-Winneba Road on a test drive and during the process employed the vehicle for his private purposes,” the statement signed by Simmons Yussif Kewura, Head, Public Relations, explained further.

The NAS concluded that “the ambulance is still in the custody of Service Ghana Autogroup Ltd and therefore not being used by the paramedics of the National Ambulance Service. It is thus, not part of the National Ambulance Service fleet.”

  • Shatta Wale leads gang to assault road Engineer for not extending road to his office

Dancehall musician Shatta Wale has allegedly led a gang to assault a supervisor at a road construction site at Adjiringanor in Accra for not extending the road to his office.

According to the engineer, Kennedy Acquah, Shatta Wale had on Saturday sent a delegation to workers on the site to ask them to extend the road to his office or have him to contend with.

“He sent someone to us on Saturday to tell us to extend the road to his office but we told them the length of the road and areas covered are contractual matters and not decided by the site workers. We asked them to pick the matter up with Urban roads who are supervising the project,” he told StarrFM.com.gh Monday.

He explained further “We were working today when he (Shatta Wale) just drove past the roadblock sign and came through where we were working despite the fact that we had just laid the asphalt, and asked who was in charge, I went close to tell him I was in charge and before I could explain anything, one of the guys with him just slapped me and he was looking on. There were a number of guys on motorbikes with him. The incident was captured on video by people passing, the police came there but did nothing about the assault on me, they rather exchanged pleasantries with him and told me to be careful”.

He has visited the hospital and heading to the Police station to file a formal complaint.

Attempts by Starrfm.com.gh to reach the musician for his side of the story have been unsuccessful. Some members of his team called by StarrFM.com.gh did not respond to their calls after numerous attempts.

  • Govt to spend GHS 521 million on upcoming population and housing census

Ghana is expected to spend five hundred and twenty-one million cedis (GHS 521 million) on its 2021 population and housing census.

According to Mr Emmanuel G. Osei, the Head of Census Secretariat, the amount is unique because it will be done technologically and tablets have been acquired for enumerators and supervisors.

The amount includes the payment of enumerators, purchasing of logistics, fieldwork cost, and training of members to facilitate the effectiveness and efficiency of the census.

According to the Head of Census Secretariat, the enumeration process required logistics to enable the field officers to reach out to all villages, communities and hamlets across the districts in the Region.

He said the GSS would need logistical support, including vehicles and motorbikes to reach out to residents in the hard-to-reach communities and urged the heads to avail themselves when they needed their support and services.

On the benefits of the exercise, he said apart from providing an updated demographic social and economic data to support national development activities, to track implementation of global and continental development, the exercise would also help at the district and local levels to assess the developmental needs of the people.

    President Akufo-Addo

Mr Osei disclosed that the 2021 Census would be heavily dependent on the use of computer-assisted personal interviews and a global positioning system (GPS) coordination for all structures and communities.

Mr Osei explained that as part of the preparations towards the successful implementation of the census, the Central Region had been divided into six zones to facilitate the smooth implementation of the census and to ensure everyone was duly captured.

He said recruitment, training of supervisors and field officers who would undertake the enumeration is ongoing and has therefore appealed to the participants to support the GSS to carry out a successful exercise.

  • ‘No ID, no MoMo’: Abort this ‘porous’ system and come out with ‘more robust’ one – MTN told

It appears a larger percentage of MTN customers have kicked against the newly introduced ‘no ID card, no MoMo’ system.

The new system according to the telecommunications giant, was rolled out to end the fraud associated with mobile money.

But barely a week after its official introduction, some mobile money users have been sharing their experiences on whether or not the new system will bring any positive change as has long been propagated by MTN Ghana.

Expressing his opinion on Facebook about the new system, a social commentator and an outspoken member of the NPP, Mr. Patrick Kwarteng Sarpong, indicated the directive by MTN has widely been criticized.

“Your directive to MoMo customers to display ID cards to enable them to send or withdraw monies is already under siege.” He wrote.

He described the system as “porous” as according to him, contrary to MTN’s directive, customers can still withdraw or make deposits even without any valid national identification card.

“The MoMo vendors have lined up their own ID cards from wherever and are using same to withdraw and send monies for customers.

“What this means is that, with or without an ID card, these vendors can withdraw or send for you because they have ID cards other than the ones bearing the details of customers.

“I ask, with such a porous system, how do you ensure that whatever informed this directive of yours is achieved?”

    P. K. Sarpong, as he is affectionately called, has since advised MTN Ghana to either reinforce the system or scrap it and come back stronger.

“You either strengthen this system or you abandon this idea and come up with a more robust system next time round.” He added.

  • LIVESTREAMING: 2020 Election Petition hearing

The Supreme Court will resume the 2020 Election Petition case filed by the Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama today Friday, February 5.

The case was adjourned after the lawyers for Mr. Mahama requested an in-camera hearing on the status of one of their witnesses due to ill-health.

However, a third witness of the petitioner Mr. Robert Joseph Mettle Nunoo, on Thursday, February 4 filed his witness statement at the Supreme Court to enable him to testify in the case.

The statement was filed on his behalf by the petitioner, Mr. John Dramani Mahama.

In his 39 point statement, the representative for the petitioner highlighted his role in the strong room of the EC, his various interactions with the Chairperson of the Commission, Jean Mensa, and other officials during the electoral process.

He is set to be cross-examined by counsels of the EC and President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo today.

Mr. Mettle-Nunoo became critical in the petition after the second witness, Dr. Michael Kpessa-Whyte, during his cross-examination, said the former minister was instructed by the Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa, to go and consult with Mr. Mahama over some grievances.

Former President John Dramani Mahama is currently at the Supreme court challenging the verdict of the 2020 elections which declared Nana Akufo-Addo as President.

The Electoral Commission (EC) declared President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) the winner of the 2020 polls, however, Mr Mahama disagrees with the figures put out by the Chair of the Commission.

John Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Candidate is therefore seeking a rerun of the election because he believes no candidate won the polls.

The court is expected to hear the case and give a ruling within a period of 42 days.

  • Ghana Water headquarters shuts down over COVID -as ex-MD Kweku Botwe dies from virus

The headquarters of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), has shut down for a week after the detection of some 19 cases of coronavirus, according to some workers there.

It comes as reports available to The Herald, says one of its former Water Managing Director, who left the employ of the state water provider years ago, Kweku Botwe, has also been killed by the coronavirus, further heightening the fear around the disease which has taken the lives of Nanabanyin Pratt, a younger brother of ace journalist Kwesi Pratt and the General Manager of Radio Gold, Sainti Baffoe-Bonnie.

The lockdown of the GWCL which started on Monday, followed a test conducted at the place on the instruction of management where out of the over 200 workers, the 19 individuals were detected as living with the condition.

Names of the workers were not given, but The Herald is informed that, the headquarters will open for business sometime next week.

In the case of Kweku Botwe, The Herald was informed that he died sometime about a week ago, at a health facility in Accra after being detected to have contracted the virus.

Family sources say, Mr Botwe, who was withdrawn from GWCL in 2013 by the Ministry of Works and Housing, had returned from a business trip to Turkey, where he was believed to have acquired the condition.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), has revealed that twenty cases of the coronavirus, have been recorded in the schools since the reopening.

Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, revealed this at a press conference in Accra yesterday.

“Greater Accra, has cumulatively reported about 20 cases in a couple of schools,” he said but failed to give out the names of the schools although this would help parents, teachers and students in these to take precautionary measures.

He added “Three cases, limited outbreaks have been recorded in two secondary schools from the Upper West. 34 contacts screen in the Upper West SHS school yielded one additional positive case. Thus, a school has three active cases and the second has one.”

It comes as the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has questioned statistics on Covid-19 casualties the government has been reporting.

General Secretary of MOWAG, Richard Kofi Jordan, told host Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin that the government is massaging the actual figures for whatever reasons best known to them.

He explained that, “even the number of people who die in their various houses is more than the deaths”.

“We the mortuary attendants work closely with the doctors and we know the number of people who are brought into the morgue as a result of Covid-19, so we want to tell the public that the Covid-19 is real and so many people are dying contrary to what we have been told.”

He further admonished the public to adhere to the laid down Covid-19 protocols to fight the communal spread of the virus.

As at January 29, 2021, Ghana’s active Covid-19 cases stood at 5,358 with 67,010 confirmed cases and 416 deaths.

Thirty-six nurses at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, have within the last four weeks tested positive for Covid-19.

Averagely, each day since January 1, at least one nurse at the Hospital tests positive for the virus, a situation health experts, say has been the highest since the outbreak of the virus in March, 2020.

The Chairman for the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwifery Association (GRNMA) for the KATH Gabriel Ofori Agyei, revealed he has recently tested positive for the virus, including his wife and kid.

Speaking on Akoma FM’s morning show Ghana Akoma, he explained the virus’ new wave has been very prevalent at the referral centre.

Mr Ofori Agyei told host Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin that “in the last 28 days, 36 of my staff have tested positive, including myself”.

“The virus has been very active in the past four weeks. Although there are PPEs available, most of the frontline workers are contracting the virus so I will appeal to the general public to adhere to the Covid-19 protocols to reduce the communal spread of the virus.”

Last year, between the months of March and December, 300 nurses at KATH tested positive for the virus, but it seems the second wave of the virus is spreading at a faster rate than before.

With the ongoing total disregard to safety protocols, more Ghanaians are feared to be infected especially among health workers.

Meanwhile, Information Minister-designate, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has been clarifying the decision of the President to ban funerals and weddings as part of measures to deal with the coronavirus.

In his 23rd update on the coronavirus virus last Sunday January 31, President Akufo-Addo, placed the ban on all social gatherings including weddings and funerals.

Providing further explanations into this matter, Mr Oppong Nkrumah said that “The president did not ban burial service because of the activity of burial, we actually encourage it to go on… What is banned is the funeral where typically in the Ghanaian community we will all gather, shake hands, announcement of people, then they’ll call for a song, people will come and dance, where there is a little party associated with it. That is what has been banned,”

He added “In the same way, when it comes to marriage, what the president has said is that, what in Ghana we call weddings, the full-blown wedding where we have a big party with reception and people dancing and people eating, sitting at reception tables, etc, that is what has been banned.

“We’ve got a lot of requests about what if somebody is having a church service, which is allowed, and they choose to bless their marriage there as part of the church service.

“I’m not sure that is what has been banned. It’s the wedding. The full-blown wedding with its reception and social activity associated with it is what has been banned”.

  • SC ruling: Petitioner suffered a major blow when his application for inspection was dismissed Lawyer

A private legal practitioner, Lawyer Tachie Antiedu says it was not surprising that the Supreme Court by a unanimous decision dismissed the application by lawyers for petition John Dramani Mahama to inspect original documents in the custody of the Electoral Commission (EC).

He explained that it is not in the rules of procedure used by the Apex court for this application to be granted but through the inherent jurisdiction of the court, it could have granted on grounds for a fair trial.

The lawyer speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm said the ruling should not surprise people.

He said the most important thing is the duties of a person who goes to court either as a petitioner or a plaintiff, you, have the burden to provide evidence to support your claims.

He said you have the burden to argue your case and convince the court that you have a strong case.

The lawyer told hoast Kwabena Agyapong the dismissal of the application was a big blow to the petitioner.

The petitioner was seeking to have documents which include the originals of the constituency presidential election result collation forms (form 9) for all constituencies, the originals of all constituency presidential election results summary sheet (form 10) and the originals of the regional presidential election collation forms (form 11) for all regions.

The others are the team is asking for the originals of the regional presidential election results summary sheets (form 12) for all regions and the original declaration of the presidential results form (form 13) and the records of the alleged update to the purported declaration of presidential election results on 9th December 2020, of the results of four (4) constituencies in the Greater Accra Region.

But the court in its ruling said the petitioner failed to demonstrate that he had no copies of the documents in question.

The court said the witnesses of the petitioner admitted on oath of having copies of the documents.

The chair of the panel Chief Justice Anin-Yeboah said the application and whether it would be granted was subject to the discretion of the court and not as of rights.

He added the application did not also raise that it had no copies of the original documents.

“In the instant case, the applicant has not raised any issue that he has no copies of the documents of the subject of this application. In view of the fact that the proceedings show the petitioner has copies of all the documents the subject of this application. We are of the opinion that no proper case has been made to warrant the exercise of our discretion in favour of the applicant.”

The lawyer in his opinion said this was not surprising and the copies the petitioner have is as genuine as the originals unless there is a situation the authenticity of a document is in doubt.

“In evidence act, the original copies are seen as the best evidence rule. In documentary evidence, the originals are the best but there exceptions and if there is no doubt with the copies, then it is as good as the originals. That was what the court based their ruling on and dismissed the application”.

In his view, it was needless for the petitioner to have pursued this application when their witnesses admitted under oath to having copies.

He stressed this has had a blow on the petitioner since his application was dismissed.

  • Economy picks up

Growth has picked up in the domestic economy since the sharp contraction in the second quarter due to the novel coronavirus, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has indicated.

A recent Monetary Policy Committee press release issued by the central bank, which disclosed this, emphasized, “All the high-frequency indicators of economic activity have rebounded, consumer and business confidence levels are back at pre-lockdown levels and there are indications of steady growth in the private sector credit. However, the renewed threat from the second-wave of the pandemic has again heightened uncertainty and could hamper the recovery process in the near-term.”

    Banking Sector Well Capitalised

According to the BoG, the banking sector was well-positioned to continue with the core objective of financial intermediation and providing support to the growth recovery process. Banks are expected to sustain the strong performance under mild to moderate stress conditions, barring more severe consequences on the real sector from the second wave of the pandemic. Policy and regulatory reliefs granted to the industry would be reviewed alongside close monitoring and prompt supervisory actions which would be taken to address emerging potential vulnerabilities in the financial sector arising from the pandemic.

It said the current account balance turned out better than earlier anticipated. However, lower-than-projected FDI flows and portfolio reversals resulted in a lower buildup of reserves than earlier projected.

    Assurance

The BoG continued that gross reserves at US$8.6 billion, which translated into 4.1 months of import cover, would provide adequate cushion against potential external vulnerabilities in 2021.

    Need For New Revenue Measures

It also noted that the prospects of a sharp fiscal correction in 2021 now looked unlikely amidst the second wave of the pandemic which would be requiring additional spending to provide testing, vaccines, etc. To put debt on a sustainable path and to ensure sustainability in policies, some new revenue measures and expenditure rationalization efforts will have to be pursued within the context of the medium term fiscal framework to allow for the generation of primary surpluses.

    Inflation

Headline inflation, while on steady, declined in the early months of the last quarter of 2020, jumped in December to 10.4 per cent, outside the target band of 8±2 per cent, driven by food prices. However, the bank projects headline inflation to return to target in the second quarter of 2021. Risks to inflation in the near-term are broadly contained, but short to medium-term risks emanating from the fiscal expansion and rising crude oil prices are emerging.

    Policy Rate Maintained

Under the circumstances, and given the balance of risks to inflation and growth, the committee announced that it had decided to keep the policy rate at 14.5 per cent.

  • How fight over 50 pesewas landed man in Koforidua prison

He went down on knees, said thank you to God and said thank you to the good samaritan whose GH¢2000 donation has given him back his freedom.

He then went ahead to deliver what turned out to be the most compelling aspect of the emotional interview. With tears running down his cheeks he uttered: “I want to urge everyone to refrain from any act of violence and obey the elders in society in order not to end up in prison”.

You will better appreciate his wise counsel if you are aware of the events that precipitated his incarceration at the overcrowded Koforidua Prisons.

It was his failure to obey an age-long saying of do not act when angry that took him from the comfort of his home to the prison.

It was his failure to exercise discretion that landed him in prison, tainting his record as an upright citizen.

Had he listened to the advice and sought remedy at the police instead of confronting the man who had attempted to defraud him, he would not have been here in the first place.

Understandably, it was disappointing to see someone you describe as a friend attempting to defraud you but as the saying goes “act out of anger and you will forever regret it”.

So how did it all start? From his own narration, Kwabena Boateng as he is called owned a shop which had his 10-year-old daughter as an attendant.

His closest buddy tried to take advantage of the perceived ignorance of the little girl by offering her the obsolete five pesewas coin in exchange for a stick of cigarette.

But unknown to his friend, his daughter could differentiate between an active currency and expired one so she quickly drew his attention.

An angry Kwame Boateng went to his friend to enquire why he would attempt to dupe his daughter and to an extent him.

The exchanges escalated into a fight and his friend drew a dagger. Kwame Boateng trusted his abilities and tried to take the knife from him. In the process of doing that, he inflicted injuries in the palm of his friend and the incident turned into a police case.

He was arraigned in court, tried without a lawyer, found guilty and asked to pay GH ¢2000 or risk 12 months in prison.

Kwame Boateng says he tried every possible means to raise the amount but all efforts came to nought.

He was thus condemned to 12 months in prison which he has so far served a little over one month.

Luck shone on him as through the Crime Check Foundation, one Ali Ibrahim saw his story on TV and offered to pay the fine for him to be released.

Following the settlement of his fine, he is now a free man with loads of lessons.

  • Coronavirus: Our hospitals are full Akufo-Addo announces

When COVID-19 first hit Ghana in March, the president declared a lockdown of parts of Accra, Tema and Tema metropolitan areas when total active cases hit 397.

Today, however, despite over 4000 active cases recorded in this second wave of infections, with “our average daily rates of infection now stand[ing] at 700, compared to 200 two weeks ago”, all social media predictions of a lockdown announcement by the president did not materialise.

The president in his 23rd Coronavirus address on Sunday said: “You do not have to be arrested by the police before you wear your mask, your workplace should not be closed for non-conformity with the protocols, if there is no urgent reason for you to be outside, please stay at home.”

He continued, “As of Friday, January 29, sixty-four more people had sadly died over the last two weeks, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths to 416…our hospitalisation rates are increasing, with the number of critically and severely ill persons now at 172. Our hospitals have become full, and we have had to reactivate our isolation centres.”

The total number of active cases, President Akufo-Addo noted, has more than doubled from a little over 1,900 two weeks ago, to 5,358 currently.

The president, therefore, only announced that funerals should be limited to 25 persons.

“My faith in God tells me that this too shall pass, for, the Battle is the Lords,” Akufo-Addo concluded his speech.

  • Call off strike; lets return to the negotiation table FWSC to Uni. Senior Staff

The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has urged the Senior Staff Association to call off their strike immediately and return to the negotiation table for an amicable solution.

A statement issued by the FWSC and signed by the Chief Executive, Dr. Edward Kwapong underscored the need for the Association to meet with FWSC urgently so as to clear some outstanding issues raised in their petition.

“As part of the negotiations, we have covered all demands except two (2). Incidentally, there are two (2) outstanding issues comprising issues raised in your press release for which we need to engage. In the circumstance, we are urging you to call off the strike and meet with FWSC as soon as possible early next week,” the statement said.

The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana, (SSA-UoG) announced the withdrawal of their services effective Thursday, January 21.

According to the First Vice Chairman of the Senior Staff Association, this has become necessary following the non-payment of their tier-two pension arrears, delay in the award of market premium and non-basic allowance, failure by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to engage them on their condition of service among others.

“I wish on behalf of the National Executive Council, to announce the withdrawal of our services with immediate effect. This has become necessary in view of the following concerns.

“Non-payment of tier-two pension arrears, delay in the award of market premium and non-basic allowance, failure by FWSC to engage us on condition of service.

“For the avoidance of doubt, members are hereby required to lay down their tools until further notice,” he said at a press conference on Thursday, January 21.

But the FWSC in a reaction to the development rather accused the Senior Staff Association of negotiating in bad faith.

“FUSSAG to be able to determine the manner in which the Union would collaborate with each other in engaging the employer. We are therefore, extremely surprised that while waiting, you wrote to the National Labour Commission on 15th January, 2021, informing them of your intention to embark on a strike action.”

  • Alex Saab: Detained Venezuelan diplomat ordered on house arrest by Cabo Verdean court

Alex Saab, a Venezuelan diplomat who has been in a Cabo Verdean prison since June 2020 on a U.S. arrest warrant is said to have had his application seeking his removal from prison approved by the Barlavento Court of Appeal.

The court on Thursday, January 21, 2021, said Alex Saab, 49, should rather be placed under house arrest while he fights an extradition request to face corruption charges in South Florida.

This, the court said, should be adhered to, till the apex court of Cabo Verdean gives its final verdict on the case.

“For the practical effect of this article, the extradited person, as already exposed, and once he has financial possibilities and has already requested it, must qualify a residence for the purposes of his stay, which will be approved by the competent authorities, the criminal police, to safety effects and in order to avoid the serious danger of escape,” a portion of a document from the court reads.

“Prosecutors in Cabo Verde said in a statement that the decision for house arrest was partly based on the fact that Saab has remained provisionally detained longer than the maximum allowed,” reports Times Union.

Mr. Saab, a known businessman closely associated with the current Venezuelan government was arrested by police in Cape Verde last year on his way to Iran aboard a private jet.

According to Times Union, U.S. officials believe Saab holds many secrets about how Maduro, his family and top aides allegedly siphoned off millions of dollars in government contracts amid widespread hunger in the oil-rich nation.

Prior to the approval of Saab’s application, a survey assessing the decisions of the Cape Verdean government in the case showed that citizens in that country are unhappy with the actions the government has taken so far.

The survey report said the government acted unfairly by taking a side when it should have remained neutral in the impasse between the U.S. and Venezuela over the arrest and detention of Saab.

Venezuela, which said it had given Saab a diplomatic status is of the view that he cannot be extradited to the U.S. because he is their diplomat and was on an assignment for them when he was arrested.

Besides the three countries involved in the case, other African countries also waded into the matter. A group of lawyers including Nigeria’s famed human rights lawyer and former president of the West African Bar Association, Femi Falana, earlier this month jointly wrote to the president of Cape Verde, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, to call for Alex Saab’s immediate release.

They said his detention is illegal and a breach of international law.

  • Court set to rule on Bobi Wine house arrest case

The High Court in Kampala has set Monday, January 25 as the date to pronounce itself on a case in which the runner-up in the just concluded presidential polls, Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu aka Bobi Wine and his wife Barbra Kyagulanyi, are seeking unconditional release from house detention following a week-long siege on his home by security.

Justice Michael Elubu set the date after hearing the submissions of all parties Thursday.

In a petition filed by a group of lawyers, the couple sued the Attorney General (AG), Chief of Defense Forces (CDF) and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

“A writ of habeas corpus be issued ordering the respondents (AG, CDF, and IGP), their servants, and agents acting under their orders, to produce the bodies of Kyagulanyi Sentamu Robert and Barbra Kyagulanyi Itungo before this honourable court for appropriate orders,” reads in part the court documents filed.

However, during the submissions by the State Attorney, Mr Martin Mwambutsya, the court heard that Mr Kyagulanyi and his wife are not in custody of any of the security agencies but rather they are at their residence with police giving them the necessary protection.

Mr Mwambutsya presented two affidavits; Brig Dr Goddard Busingye the chief of legal services in the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs and the Assistant Inspector General of Police Edward Ochom to back up his submission.

Court further heard that Ms Kyagulanyi and other members of her household have not been restricted in their movements in any way.

In their affidavits, the two officers noted that Mr Kyagulanyi has on several occasions organised processions and addressed mass gatherings in several places contrary of Covid-19 regulation S10 No 83 of 2020 of the Penal Code Act Cap 120.

“His movements have been restricted as a preventive measure with the aim of neutralising security threats,” Mr Mwambutsya said.

However Mr Kyagulanyi’s lawyer, Mr Merdard Ssegona asked court to disregard AIGP Ochom’s affidavit saying that it was just a scanned document with no date and a scanned signature which must not allowed by law.

The judge also wondered why affidavits of the officers in charge of Kyegegwa, Kayunga, Koboko were not filed by the state instead of hearsay which is not allowed.

Mr Ssegona asked the court to order the security operatives to vacate the home of Mr Kyagulanyi.

“It is not clear for what reason the applicant (Mr Kyagulanyi) is in detention. Whether he’s there for protection or not, what he’s going to do. Mr Kyagulanyi has not tested positive for Covid-19 to say that he’s going to spread the virus,” Mr Ssegona submitted.

According to court documents, Bobi Wine was one of the 11 presidential candidates and that last Thursday upon casting his vote, he returned to his home in Magere, Kasangati Town Council in Wakiso District. However, later that day, several police officers and soldiers surrounded his home and have since never left.

This has created a situation where Bobi Wine and his wife cannot leave their home to go out and their visitors including his lawyers and doctors can’t access their home.

  • Troubled Legon Cities FC to face free-scoring Ashgold

Troubled Legon Cities FC will have to dig deep this Friday, when they take on free-scoring AshantiGold SC at the Accra Sports Stadium in a matchday ten of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) fixture.

With just a win for the Royals, in the nine-week-old league, they would be seeking another win in the season to enhance their chances of surviving relegation but that would come at a price as their opponents are one of the highest-scoring sides in the season.

The Royals would be welcoming Baba Mahama back into the team this weekend after serving his one-game suspension against Aduana Stars, whilst central defender Nicholas Mensah is expected back to the starting line-up to face the Miners.

However, Asamoah Gyan would remain on the sidelines with an injury.

AshantiGold SC would have their eyes set on the top spot again after dropping from the first spot on Sunday following a goalless draw against Medeama SC at home.

They seem to have a good record at the Accra Sports Stadium as they have so far recorded win over Great Olympics and draw with Hearts of Oak.

It is a clear indication of the outcome of the game, as all points the way of the miners.

A win for the home side would a major surprise in the season.

  • Don’t fear victimization; make complaints against health professionals – GMA urges Ghanaians

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has urged Ghanaians to file complaints of mistreatment and neglect against any and all health professionals who act unprofessional in the discharge of their duty.

The Association noted that health professionals exist solely for the well-being of patients and need to be sanctioned if they behave otheriwse.

The President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Frank Ankobea in an interview earlier today noted that hospitals have various ways of addressing patient concerns and advised patients and their families to take advantage of that.

In an interview on the Happy Morning Show with host, Samuel Eshun, Dr. Ankobea said, “there are channels one can use to address problems and concerns in hospitals and patients must take advantage of them”.

He noted that patients will continuously suffer mistreatment if they make no complaints as these unprofessional health practitioners will keep on repeating their actions.

Dr. Ankobea believes these complaints can be escalated further if the hospitals refuse to take any actions against their staff.

“If your complaints are not addressed by the hospital, you then go to the various regulatory bodies and press charges. Ghanaians must know that one can make these complaints without suffering any victimization”.

On his authority, a discussion on the rights of patients should be made a priority. “We need to start educating patients on how they can protect their rights. This is the time and we should start now”, he said.

  • Ignore declaration from national executives, were still on strike UG TEWU

The University of Ghana chapter of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) has dismissed claims from national executives of the Union that an agreement has been reached to call off their strike.

Leaders of the Union on the campus of the University says that no such agreements have been made, thus, the notice from the national union should be disregarded.

The UG chapter says that their industrial action continues unabated as long as the government does not exhibit a concrete commitment to improving their conditions of service.

Speaking to UniversNews after meeting with members of the Union on Wednesday, UG local TEWU President, Kenneth Botchway, said that the statement from the national executive calling for an end to the strike was made without consultation with local executives.

“The statement that we saw which is not carrying our letterhead stated that local executives in public universities have agreed to suspend the strike. That paper circulating is not carrying our letterhead so we do not treat it with relevance,” Kenneth Botchway.

  • Fake police officer arrested in Kumasi

A young man has been arrested for dressing as a police officer and directing traffic in some parts of Kumasi.

The suspect, identified as Osei Agyeman was caught red-handed conducting motor checks at Adum-Kejetia in Kumasi.
