  • Pro-Trump mob storm US Capitol

Police are clearing supporters of President Donald Trump from the US Capitol after they breached one of the most iconic American buildings, engulfing the nation’s capital in chaos after Trump urged his supporters to fight against the ceremonial counting of the electoral votes that confirmed President-elect Joe Biden’s win.

Shortly after 1 p.m. ET hundreds of pro-Trump protesters pushed through barriers set up along the perimeter of the Capitol, where they tussled with officers in full riot gear, some calling the officers “traitors” for doing their jobs. About 90 minutes later, police said demonstrators got into the building and the doors to the House and Senate were being locked. Shortly after, the House floor was evacuated by police.

An armed standoff took place at the House front door as of 3 p.m. ET, and police officers had their guns drawn at someone who was trying to breach it. A Trump supporter was also pictured standing at the Senate dais earlier in the afternoon. A woman is in critical condition after being shot in the chest on the Capitol grounds, according to two sources familiar with the matter. The sources could not provide further details on the circumstances of the shooting. Multiple officers have been injured with at least one transported to the hospital, multiple sources tell CNN.

Smoke grenades were used on the Senate side of the Capitol, as police work to clear the building of rioters. Windows on the west side of the Senate have been broken, and hundreds of officers are amassing on the first floor of the building.

The Senate floor was cleared of rioters as of 3:30 p.m. ET, and an officer told CNN that they have successfully squeezed them away from the Senate wing of the building and towards the Rotunda, and they are removing them out of the East and West doors of the Capitol.

It’s not clear if any of the individuals have been taken into custody.

Vice President Mike Pence was also evacuated from Capitol, where he was to perform his role in the counting of electoral votes.

The stunning display of insurrection was the first time the US Capitol had been breached since the British attacked and burned the building in August of 1814, during the War of 1812, according to Samuel Holliday, director of scholarship and operations with the US Capitol Historical Society.

Trump has directed the National Guard to Washington along with “other federal protective services,” according to White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany.

The entire DC National Guard has been activated by the Department of Defense following a pro-Trump mob breaching the United States Capitol.

“The D.C. Guard has been mobilized to provide support to federal law enforcement in the District,” said Jonathan Hoffman, the chief Pentagon spokesman. “Acting Secretary Miller has been in contact with Congressional leadership, and Secretary McCarthy has been working with the D.C. government. The law enforcement response will be led by the Department of Justice.”

The Department of Defense had earlier received a request from the US Capitol Police for additional DC National Guard forces but a decision has not been made, according to a senior defense official.

The official said DC National Guard was not anticipating to be used to protect federal facilities, and the Trump administration had decided earlier this week that would be the task of civilian law enforcement, the official said.

The shocking scene was met with less police force than many of the Black Lives Matter protests that rolled across the country in the wake of George Floyd’s killing at the hands of Minneapolis police officers last year. While federal police attacked peaceful protesters in Lafayette Square outside the White House over the summer, clearing the way for Trump to take a photo in front of a nearby church at the time, protesters on Wednesday were able to overrun Capitol police and infiltrate the country’s legislative chambers.

House and Senate leadership is safe and in an undisclosed locations, according to a person familiar. A separate lawmaker said House members have been evacuated to a location that this source would not disclose.

The US Capitol Police are working to secure the second floor of the Capitol first, and will then expand from there. Outside the Capitol, the DC Metropolitan Police Department continues to mass, but no major move has been made yet toward the crowd.

The Capitol police officer in the House chamber told lawmakers that they may need to duck under their chairs and informed lawmakers that protesters were in the building’s Rotunda. Lots of House members were seen wearing gas masks as they move between Capitol buildings. Members were calling family to say they are OK.

Trump finally called on his supporters to “go home” hours after the riot started, but spent a large amount of time in the one-minute video lamenting and lying about his election loss.

In one stunning line, Trump told the mob to “go home,” but added, “We love you. You are very special.”

Trump struck a sympathetic tone to the rioters he himself unleashed saying, “I know your pain, I know you’re hurt. We had an election that was stolen from us. It was a landslide election and everyone knows it. Especially the other side. But you have to go home now. We have to have peace.”

Others inside the President’s orbit tweeted their calls for calm as the mob repeatedly attempted to take over the building.

Donald Trump Jr., the President’s son, said that his supporters who mobbed the Capitol were “wrong and not who we are.”

“Be peaceful and use your 1st Amendment rights, but don’t start acting like the other side. We have a country to save and this doesn’t help anyone,” he tweeted.

The protesters have breached exterior security barriers, and video footage shows protesters gathering and some clashing with police near the Capitol building. CNN’s team on the ground saw a number of protesters trying to go up the side of the Capitol building. Several loud flash bangs have been heard.

Protesters could be seen pushing against metal fences and police using the fences to push protesters back, while other officers reached over the top to club people trying to cross their lines.

Flash bangs could be heard near the steps of the Capitol as smoke filled the air. In some instances officers could be seen deploying pepper spray. Tear gas has been deployed, but it’s not clear whether by protesters or police, and people wiped tears from their eyes while coughing.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser just announced a citywide curfew from 6 p.m. ET on Wednesday until 6 a.m. ET Thursday.

Federal and local law enforcement are responding to reports of possible pipe bombs in multiple locations in Washington DC, according to a federal law enforcement official. It’s unclear if the devices are real or a hoax, but they’re being treated as real.

A pipe bomb was found at the Republican National Committee’s headquarters earlier Wednesday, an RNC official told CNN. The device was found on the ground outside, along the wall of the headquarters. It was safely detonated by the police, the RNC official said.

At least two suspected pipe bombs have been rendered safe by law enforcement, including the one at the building that houses RNC offices and one in the US Capitol complex, a federal law enforcement official told CNN. The official said these were real explosive devices and they were detonated safely.

The Democratic National Committee was also evacuated after a suspicious package was being investigated nearby, a Democratic source familiar with the matter told CNN.

The party had preemptively closed the building ahead of the protests, the source said, but a few security and essential personnel were evacuated.

  • Military and police storm Parliament amid chaotic Speaker vote stalemate

Security personnel have stormed Parliament following several commotions recorded in the Parliament since the inauguration processes for the 8th parliament commenced.

The military and police officers who were heavily armed and clad in full regalia marched unto the floor of the Parliament to restore calm after some opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs, for the fourth time, disrupted the electoral process of a new Speaker for the House.

Some members of the Minority, led by their Chief Whip, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka continuously disrupted the election process by carrying away the ballot box.

But on the fourth occasion, not only the ballot bot was snatched, MP for Yapei Kusawgu, John Abdulai Jinapor was seen together with Mr Muntaka kicking the ballot booth.

According to the NDC, the lawmakers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) were breaking the order of secret voting by showing their ballot to their whip, Frank Annor-Dompreh before depositing it in the box.

But after the heavily armed military officers barged into the House, the NDC chanted a portion of the national anthem saying, “and help us to resist oppressors rule with all our will and might forevermore.”

Meanwhile, the soldiers left the House barely 10 minutes after storming the place.

  • Carlos Ahenkorah snatches ballot papers during Speaker of Parliament election [Photos]

The Member of Parliament for Tema West, Carlos Ahenkorah did the unexpected on Thursday morning in Parliament when he snatched uncounted ballot papers in the Speaker of Parliament elections and attempted to bolt with it.

This was after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament began celebrating what they expected to be a victory in their favour.

The former deputy Trade and Industry Minister who was not previously sighted, ran to the table during counting and snatched the ballots of Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye and attempted to bolt with it.

He was quickly chased and accosted at the entrance of the parliamentary chamber and physically challenged by some NDC MPs.

The Chief Whip on the NDC side and MP for Asawase, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak also went after him and secured the ballots papers which were returned to the table.

Carlos Ahenkorah has since left the parliamentary chamber.

  • FDA cautions radio stations against advertisement of sexual enhancement drugs

Radio stations in the Ashanti Region have been warned against the advertisement of sexual enhancement medicines on their platforms.

The warning by the regional branch of the Food and Drug Authority (FDA) follows the continuous flouting of the directive laid down by the regulatory body by some radio networks.

According to the Head of the Ashanti Regional FDA, Nora Narkie Terlabie, radio stations who use their network for such advertisement risk facing the law.

“The FDA has cautioned several media houses to stop this lawlessness but they seem not concerned… the law is clear, sexual enhancement drugs cannot be advertised on radio in the country, but sadly some radio stations continue to flout this simple rule,” said Madam Nora Terlabie.

The directive does not only apply to radio stations in the Ashanti Region alone but all other radio stations in the country.

Most radio stations in the country have been found guilty of using their channel for the advertisement of sexual enhancement drugs despite the FDA directive that frowns on it.

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwesi Amoako-Atta, has advised persons who have encroached the Tema Motorway reservations to remove unauthorized structures from the area or face demolition.

He revealed that owners of the properties found along the said location have turned deaf ears to several calls to remove their properties to allow for the reconstruction of the Tema motorway into a three-lane dual carriage.

Mr Amoako-Atta in a media engagement mentioned that several letters have been presented to encroachers but that notwithstanding, people continue to erect structures along the Tema motorway reservations.

He intimated that “The time of reckoning has come, the road has been awarded for reconstruction and those who have ignored all these pieces of advice to leave the area would now see whether they will obey orders or still do whatever they want to do.”

Mota-Engil Engenharia Econstrucao Africa S.A has been awarded the contract for the reconstruction of the Accra-Tema Motorway and extension from the Tema interchange through Apenkwa Interchange to the Neoplan Junction.

  • Asante Kotoko suspects foul play in coronavirus results released ahead of Al Hilal clash

Asante Kotoko remains suspicious of the Coronavirus results released by Al Hilal ahead of their CAF Champions League clash.

Five players and seven officials were reported to have contracted the virus a few minutes to the clash with the Sudanese giants.

The results released showed discrepancies which the Porcupine Warriors are eager to challenge.

“AL Hilal covid test results were mixed up with our results and a Covid result of one Asante Kotoko player conspicuously missing,” Asante Kotoko wrote on their official Twitter handle.

“The two different covid result sample. The Negative results are different from the “ typed letter” format of the Positive covid results,” the club added.

It is yet to be known if another test will be conducted to determine whether the players are indeed positive or negative.

  • Man City confirm three new positive coronavirus tests just hours before Man Utd clash

Manchester City have confirmed that two more players, and one additional staff member, have tested positive for Covid-19 following the club’s latest round of testing.

Goalkeeper Scott Carson and 18-year-old midfielder Cole Palmer are the two members of the playing staff that have tested positive, while an unnamed member of the non-playing staff has also delivered a positive test.

The coronavirus crisis continues to worsen in the United Kingdom and globally, with 40 new cases among Premier League players and staff recorded in the past week – a new high for England’s top flight.

Manchester City have been one of the worst-affected clubs in the Premier League in terms of the number of positive coronavirus tests, with a total of eight players having now tested positive for Covid-19.

That includes first-team stars such as Eric Garcia, Gabriel Jesus and Kyle Walker, who all missed City’s 3-1 win over Chelsea in their last fixture on January 3.

Despite that fixture at Stamford Bridge going ahead, City have already had one of their matches postponed in the 2020-21 campaign due to the coronavirus situation, with the Premier League meeting against Everton, that was due to be played on December 28, having been called off.

And the news regarding the positive tests for Carson, Palmer and the unnamed staff member represents a worrying latest development, with Covid-19 continuing to spread within the Premier League club.

    The bigger picture

The latest news will come as a concern to head coach Pep Guardiola, who has already seen his options limited in terms of squad selection over the past month.

While the latest two players to have tested positive for Covid-19 are not essential members of the Catalan’s starting XI, the continuing spread of the virus offers a bleak outlook with there the obvious potential for more players and staff to test positive.

Despite the absence of several key players, City have coped well on the pitch, beating Newcastle United 2-0 on Boxing Day before Sunday’s impressive 3-1 win over Frank Lampard’s Chelsea.

    What’s been said?

The statement from City regarding the latest positive coronavirus tests reads, in full: “Manchester City FC can confirm that Scott Carson, Cole Palmer and one member of staff have tested positive for Covid-19.

“Both personnel will now observe a period of self-isolation in accordance with Premier League and UK Government protocol on quarantine.

“Everyone at the club wishes Scott, Cole and all of our other colleagues a speedy recovery ahead of their return to work, training and competition.”

Guardiola, meanwhile, has insisted that City “don’t have many players” ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final meeting with rivals Manchester United, and is concerned that his side will struggle to meet the demands of the fixture list with an ever-depleting squad.

  • CAFCL: Four officials, seven players of Asante Kotoko test positive for COVID-19 ahead of Al-Hilal clash

Ghana Premier League side, Kumasi Asante Kotoko have confirmed multiple coronavirus cases in their team ahead of their CAF Champions League reverse tie against Al-Hilal, Omdurman scheduled for today, Wednesday, January 6, 2021, in Sudan.

In a statement, the team confirmed that four officials and seven players tested positive for the virus.

Kotoko is however challenging the results, claiming the tests had been tampered with.

The affected persons have been sent back to the team hotel in Sudan.

The names of the players who had contracted the virus were however not stated.

Kumasi Asante Kotoko lost 1-0 in the first-leg at the Accra Sports Stadium and must beat the Blues if they have to advance to the group stages of the CAF Champions League.

The CAF Champions League reverse tie, which was scheduled to come off at 13:00GMT has been delayed.

  • Asante Kotoko management settle striking players per diems ahead of Al Hilal clash

The management of Kumasi Asante Kotoko have settled per diems of their striking players ahead of the CAF Champions League qualifying second leg tie against Sudanese giants Al Hilal.

The players boycotted training in Sudan on Tuesday, and threatened to boycott the game itself if management did not pay all per diems owed the players from previous games.

Management met the players to try to persuade them to go ahead with training with a promise that all monies would be paid after the game but the players stood their grounds and refused to train.

This action forced club CEO Nana Yaw Amponsah and Administrative Manager Emmanuel Newton Dasoberi, to come up with an amount of $8,800 to settle the 22 players, who will each take home $400.

The Porcupine Warriors lost the first leg 1-0 in Accra a fortnight ago and must beat the Sudanese giants by a 1-goal margin if they are not overturn the result and qualify for a first Champions League group stage appearance since 2006.

Game is slated to come off in Omdurman at 13:00GMT on Wednesday 6th January, 2021.

  • Runoff election in Georgia Tuesday to determine who controls Senate

The southern US state of Georgia on Tuesday will hold key runoff elections that will determine which political party controls the US Senate, the Republicans or the Democrats.

Two Senate seats, both currently held by Republicans, are up for grabs in Tuesday’s race.

The runoff is being held because no candidate succeeded in garnering the 50 per cent of the vote needed to win the election that was held in early November. On January 5, the top two contenders from each race will face off again.

In one of the races, incumbent Republican candidate David Perdue, 70, is up against the much younger Democratic candidate John Ossoff, the 33-year-old former head of a documentary film company.

Ossoff spent five years working for a Democratic Congressman from the state capital Atlanta prior to working in media.

Perdue, a staunch ally of US President Donald Trump, has been in the Senate since 2015.

In the other race, Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler, 50, is running against the Reverend Raphael Warnock, a 51-year-old newcomer to politics.

Loeffler, who was appointed to the Senate in 2019 by Georgia’s governor after the previous senator resigned, is running to hold onto her seat.

Her Democratic opponent helped co-found the New Georgia Project, a voting rights organization, and is a pastor for the church where civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr preached.

The outcome of the race will impact how easily Democratic President-elect Joe Biden can implement his agenda.

If Republicans win just one of the two races, they will maintain control of the upper chamber of Congress. If the Democrats win both, the Senate will be split, but the vice president, which in the new administration will be Democrat Kamala Harris, can act as a tie-breaker.

Biden spoke at a rally in Atlanta, Georgia on Monday and urged voters to send Ossoff and Warnock to Congress, arguing that Perdue and Loeffler are more loyal to Trump than they are to the people of Georgia.

“By electing John and the Reverend you’ll be sending a powerful message to Congress and to the country, that’s it’s time for this nation to finally come together,” Biden said.

  • 30-day lockdown for Zimbabwe following spike in coronavirus cases

Following a spike in coronavirus cases, Zimbabwe has reintroduced a 12-hour curfew from 6 pm until 6 am.

The new curfew was announced on Saturday by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.

“We have seen a surge in COVID-19 cases and deaths, almost double in two months, from 8,374 on 1 November to 14,084 to date. In light of the recent surge in COVID-19 cases the following stiff lockdown measures are being put in place with immediate effect,” he said.

Aside from the dawn-to-dusk curfew, other measures have been reintroduced.

Only essential businesses can remain open and all gatherings such as wedding ceremonies or religious services are banned, with the exception of funerals, which are limited to 30 people.

The measures could worsen the already troubled Zimbabwean economy.

However, Health Minister Constantino Chiwenga justifies this decision by an increase in coronavirus contaminations which is said to have almost doubled since November — rising from 8,374 cases to more than 14,000.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the country has recorded 369 deaths linked to coronavirus.

  • Ethiopia’s Tigray conflict revives bitter disputes over land

As rifle-toting militiamen fired celebratory rounds into the air, young men marched through the streets denouncing the former ruling party of Ethiopia’s Tigray region as “thieves.”

The party, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), is the target of military operations ordered by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, last year’s Nobel Peace laureate, that have reportedly left thousands dead since early November.

But the impromptu parade this month in Alamata, a farming town in southern Tigray flanked by low, rolling mountains, was unrelated to any kind of battlefield victory.

Rather it was to hail the release of Berhanu Belay Teferra, a self-described political prisoner under the TPLF whose pet issue, analysts warn, risks becoming Ethiopia’s next flashpoint.

In 2018, Berhanu, 48, was detained by the TPLF for advocating that his homeland — located in an area known as Raya, of which Alamata is the biggest city — had no business falling under Tigrayan control.

Berhanu argued that the TPLF had illegally incorporated the famously fertile land into Tigray after it came to power in the early 1990s.

  • AC Monza star K.P Boateng satisfied with draw against Lecce

Ghana forward Kevin-Prince Boateng has expressed satisfaction in AC Monza’s goalless draw at Lecce in the Serie B over the weekend.

Monza who were without forward Mario Balotelli failed to close the gap on leaders Empoli after the draw at the Stadio Comunale Via del Mare.

“We knew that the Giallorossi was a strong team and we had a good match like them after all. The draw is the right result for a match where we were tired and not that we wanted to make mistakes,” he said after the game.

Balotelli was left out of the matchday squad despite his immediate impact on his debut against Salernitana. Boateng believes the Italian forward will contribute hugely to the club in the second round.

“He arrived with great desire, he wanted to play at all costs today even if he felt a little annoyed. Now with the break, he can get back in shape and give us a hand in the second half.”

Boateng joined Monza in the summer transfer window and has already netted four times as the club lie 3rd on the Serie B table.

  • 126 private schools have collapsed since COVID-19 began GNACOPS

Data from the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) show that a total of 126 private schools in the country have collapsed as of Monday, January 4, 2021, due to the challenges brought on by the ravaging impact of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The pandemic among other things has left many of the schools in a state of financial difficulties, bankruptcy and insolvency making it difficult for many of these schools to operate as the nationwide resumption of school activities approach.

The Council has also identified the failure of regulatory agencies such as the National Inspectorate Board (NIB), Social Security Insurance and National Trust (SSNIT) and Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to ensure flexible terms of cooperation during their hard times.

In a statement, the Greater Accra Region topped the list with 16 collapsed schools. It was followed by the Northern Region where 13 schools have become non-operational.

The Ashanti Region came third with 11 closed schools.

GNACOPS says the closure of these educational facilities means an average 37,800 students have been affected due to the unfortunate development.

An average of 2,394 teachers have also become redundant as a result, the GNACOPS reported noted.

In an interview with citinewsroom.com, National Executive Director of GNACOPS, Enoch Kwasi Gyetuah decried the tough moment being faced by its members.

“Most of the schools have sacked teachers during lockdown because SSNIT took them to court over contributions, so they had to sack the teachers to be safe. GRA threatened the schools with closure; they had to go to their offices and plead. The NIB which regulates both public and private schools want to police the schools rather than the sustenance measures checking the schools for standards and registration other than sustenance. Out of frustration, most schools sat on bank loans, sell off school properties, change infrastructure to rentals,” he lamented.

  • Immigration Officers force individuals to slap each other in viral video

A cruel video of Immigration Officers forcing some alleged arrested persons to slap themselves has surfaced online and has got people talking.

In the video that was sighted by GhanaWeb, the Immigration Officers, whose faces were not captured by the camera and names unknown, instructed the arrested people to slap themselves to their amusement.

The first two people who were Okada Riders had to obey what the officers had ordered them to do for fear of what might have happened to them if they refused to follow the order from the security officers.

One Immigration Officer at a point had to demonstrate to the young men how to slap better because he seemed not to be satisfied with the standard slaps.

He then allowed the Okada Drivers to go after making them exchange a series of slaps on the streets and brought other young men to repeat the same acts.

GhanaWeb, however, cannot confirm when the incident happened.

  • Germany reports 9,847 coronavirus cases in 24 hours

German health officials said on Monday that the country had registered 9,847 new coronavirus infections and 302 deaths in the last 24 hours.

The country’s infectious disease agency, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) noted that diminished counting at the tail end of the New Year’s holiday might be distorting the data.

Overall, the country has recorded 1,775,513 cases, with 34,574 deaths and 1,401,200 people who have recovered.

Meanwhile, nationwide restrictions designed to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus appear all but certain to continue. Chancellor Angela Merkel is due to meet the 16 state premiers on Tuesday to discuss the next steps.

Germany enacted sweeping closures and restrictions across the country in mid-December, tightening a partial lockdown initiated in early November that failed to reverse the country’s rising trend in infections.

The tougher lockdown is to stay in place until at least January 10.

  • Explosion at fuel depot on Lebanon-Syria border injures 10

An explosion inside a fuel warehouse on the Lebanese-Syrian border injured at least 10 people on Sunday, the Lebanese Red Cross said.

Three were treated at the site in the border town of al-Qasr, while the seven others were transferred to local hospitals, George Kettneh, the secretary-general of the Lebanese Red Cross, told dpa.

Footage online purportedly showed flames of fire rising from the warehouse amid successive blasts reportedly caused by exploding gas cylinders.
The initial explosion was powerful and triggered a massive fire, local residents said.

The blaze was later brought under control, Bilal Rad, a civil defence official, said. “The search is ongoing for any injured,” he told the online edition of the Lebanese newspaper Annahar.

Local media reported the explosion had been caused by a short electrical failure.
The Lebanese army said the warehouse was located on the Syrian side of the border and that the privately owned facility was used to store fuel and gas.

“The warehouse is far from the army checkpoint in the area,” the army said in a brief statement, adding there were no casualties among military personnel.
The area is controlled by the Iran-allied Lebanese Hezbollah movement and is a hub for smuggling activities into neighbouring Syria.

In August, a cataclysmic explosion hit the Beirut port, killing more than 190 people, injuring 6,000 others and leaving some 300,000 more homeless. That blast was caused by tons of ammonium nitrate, which had been inadequately stored at the port.

  • New US Congress sworn in amid fight over Biden’s election win

The new US Congress convened for the first time on Sunday amid threats by Republican senators to vote against the upcoming certification of presidential election results.

The House of Representatives met at noon (17:00 GMT), as prescribed in the Constitution, and then voted to elect a new speaker. Nancy Pelosi was re-elected to the role by a narrow margin.

The 80-year-old California Democrat, the only woman to have ever served as a speaker, has led the House Democrats for 17 years. It is expected to be her last term in the House’s top job.

However, Pelosi faces challenges in the 117th Congress, leading the narrowest majority in two decades in the lower chamber after Democrats lost seats in the November election.

Control of the Senate is still undetermined and will be decided by two hotly-contested run-off elections in Georgia on Tuesday.

Newly elected and returning members of Congress were being sworn in in small groups at the US Capitol as a safety precaution amid the still-raging coronavirus pandemic, which also forced festivities to be cancelled.

Vice President Mike Pence elbow bumped senators after administering the oath of office to them.

“To say the 117th Congress convenes at a challenging time would indeed be an understatement,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said as he welcomed senators.

“From political division to a deadly pandemic to adversaries around the world, the hurdles before us are many and they are serious,” he said, adding there were also “reasons for hope.”

Congress will face its first major test on Wednesday when it is mandated to certify president-elect Joe Biden’s election victory before his inauguration on January 20.

The normally routine occasion risks being complicated by a group of Republican lawmakers who have said they will vote against the certification of electors from US states where President Donald Trump has disputed Biden’s win.

The move to subvert the vote is widely expected to fail and simply draw out the certification process. It is also creating a rift in the Republican party.

A day after 11 Republican senators said they intended to appeal the certification, a bipartisan group of 10 senators on Sunday issued a statement urging their colleagues to support the electoral college vote. “The 2020 election is over,” they said.

Trump has been promoting unfounded claims that the election was rigged against him, but has provided no proof that swayed any court to his side.

In his latest effort to overturn the election results, Trump pressured Georgia’s top elections official to “find” nearly 12,000 votes needed to flip the state in his favour in an hour-long Saturday phone call, according to recordings published on Sunday by the Washington Post.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a fellow Republican, dismissed the president’s claims in the call, telling Trump they were based on debunked conspiracy theories.

“He has no clue!” Trump tweeted about Raffensperger on Sunday, saying he had phoned the secretary of state about “voter fraud in Georgia.”

  • Students in Western Kenya use boats to school as a result of floods

Some Kenyan students in Kisumu county, close to the overflowing Lake Victoria, are forced to take a boat to school, only to find waterlogged classrooms and no teachers on site. Public schools have reopened in Kenya following a closure ordered by the government in March 2020 to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The flooding has made parents to spend more in maintaining their kids attendance to schools despite the beckoning dangers

“When the coronavirus came all the pupils stayed home, but today the schools reopen and we are forced to take them back to their original schools where they were learning. But it’s impossible as the school is marooned and the only way to reach it is through water transport in boats. But they have to eat lunch and we also pay the boat fare again in the evening for the return,” a parent said.

The floods now pose high risks to the learners as some of them are expected to compete with other students and schools in the upcoming national examinations.

“There is a lot of water in the school. We cannot learn like the others (in other schools), but we will sit the same national exams,” a student told journalists.

Kenya has had almost 97,000 cases and over 1,600 deaths since the start of the outbreak, with a surge in its positivity rate of up to 20 percent in October decreasing to below five percent in the past week

  • Real Valladolid interested in re-signing Mohammed Salisu

Spanish side Real Valladolid are interested in re-signing Mohammed Salisu from Southampton in the January transfer window.

The 21-year old is still waiting to make his debut for the Premier League side since he joined in the summer from Real Valladolid.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhüttl has indicated the Ghanaian defender is not yet ready but has a future at the club.

“Salisu is the future of this club. It will take time. We know how long it takes for some players to step into the team,” Hasenhuttl said.

Real Valladolid are monitoring the situation and are interested in signing the centre back or consider a loan option due to his inactivity at the club.

Mohammed Salisu may also fancy a move back to the La Liga side were he excelled after making over 30 appearances before his move to the Premier League.

With the transfer window opening in some few days, clubs in the Premier League and Spain may be interested in securing the services of the centre back should he opt to move for playing time.

Salisu made Southampton’s matchday squad for the first time for a 2-1 win over Brighton and Hove Albion earlier this month and has since made Hasenhuttl’s bench on consecutive occasions.

  • Trump extends freeze on some work visas until March

US President Donald Trump has extended a suspension on issuing certain work visas and green cards through the end of March, justifying the measure as a means to shore up jobs for US citizens amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Allowing immigrant workers into the country would “pose a risk of displacing and disadvantaging United States workers during the economic recovery following the COVID-19 outbreak,” a presidential proclamation released on Thursday said.

Therefore, measures imposed in April and June that significantly restrict legal immigration to the US should remain in place for now, it said.
The limits are now set to remain in place as president-elect Joe Biden replaces Trump in the White House in January.

The Labor, Homeland Security and State departments are to periodically review whether changes to the measures are necessary.

The orders apply only to aliens who are currently outside the country and do not yet have permission to enter. Those who already have permanent residency are not affected, and there are exceptions for people including spouses and children of US citizens.

The US economy is struggling and the number of people receiving unemployment benefits is now 19.6 million, compared with only about 1.8 million a year ago. The large number of daily new Covid-19 infections gives little hope for a quick recovery.

Whilst the government painted a pessimistic picture to justify the measures in the proclamation, Trump claimed in a video message released on Thursday that the country had weathered the pandemic “dramatically better” economically than experts had predicted.

  • COVID-19: US hospital worker arrested for destroying 500 vaccine doses

A since-fired Wisconsin hospital worker was arrested for removing more than 500 doses of Covid-19 vaccine from refrigeration, causing them to spoil, police said Thursday.

A statement from police in Grafton, near Milwaukee, said the suspect was charged after “tampering with and causing the destruction of 57 vials containing approximately 570 doses of the novel coronavirus vaccine.”
The name of the person charged has not been released.

Advocate Aurora Health initially reported that 57 vials of the Moderna vaccine were tossed after an employee “inadvertently” removed them from the fridge at the Grafton center and left them out overnight. The employee, however, admitted to doing it deliberately, officials said.

Dr Jeff Bahr, Aurora Health Care Medical Group president, said Thursday that the FBI and Wisconsin state police had joined the ongoing law enforcement investigation. He added that the individual’s motive remained unclear.
    The worker was fired Wednesday.

The vaccine must be stored in a freezer between minus 13 degrees and 5 degrees Fahrenheit, then thawed in a refrigerator for 21 and a half hours or at room temperature for an hour.

“We continue to believe that vaccination is our way out of the pandemic,” Aurora Health said in a statement.

“We are more than disappointed that this individual’s actions will result in a delay of more than 500 people receiving their vaccine. This was a violation of our core values, and the individual is no longer employed by us.”

Aurora Health said it has contacted “appropriate authorities for further investigation, but Grafton police have not publicized any potential charges.
Bahr said there was no evidence the individual tampered with any other vials of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines at the facility. He credited the system in place at the hospital for preventing further losses.

“It’s become clear this is a situation involving a bad actor and not a bad process,” Bahr said during a news conference.

Bahr said that 57 people received vaccines from the doses that were removed from the facility’s refrigerators, before the rest of the vaccine was tossed.
The doctor said those who received those doses have been informed that their inoculations may have been less effective.

Wisconsin has reported more than 477,000 positive Covid-19 cases so far and almost 5,000 deaths.

  • Peace can only exist without justice in a nation of powerless citizens John Mahama

Former President John Mahama has said justice is important for peace to prevail in any country. According to him, it is only in a country of powerless citizens that peace can exist without justice.

Mr. Mahama said this when he addressed the nation after his party announced their decision to challenge the results of the just-ended election which John Mahama has said was not free and fair but was rigged for his opponent, Nana Akufo-Addo.

“It is only in governments where the people are powerless, and at the mercy of those who hold office, that peace—or at least what passes as peace—can exist without justice.” He said.

John Mahama said he is fighting in court for the same thing Akufo-Addo fought for in 2012, the removal of doubt and to create a system that answers questions.

“Some people have asked me what I hope to gain by challenging the results of this election. Let me tell you: I want, perhaps, the very same thing that my opponent wanted when in 2012 he challenged the results of that election; I want the removal of doubt. I want for all of us to know that our elections should be free, fair, and safe—and that we do not have to settle for a process that leaves us confused, and with more questions than answers.”

“I want a Ghana where institutions of the state can be held to account. Where we can stand on principle and demand transparency without the risk of losing our lives.

When people lose their lives as seven people did in the course of our elections, we are moving backwards not forward; we are unravelling the very fabric of our democracy; we are risking the loss of three decades worth of progress.”

The respondents, which is the EC and President Akufo-Addo have 10 days to respond.

  • Tony Lithur heads Mahamas legal team in election petition

Renowned lawyer Tony Lithur will be the lead counsel for John Dramani Mahama in the latest election petition filed by the former president.

The head of Lithur Brew and Company was also the same lawyer in the landmark election petition of 2013 when then-President John Dramani Mahama was cited as one of the respondents.

In the petition filed at the Supreme Court on Wednesday, December 30, Mr Mahama wants the results of the elections to be declared null and void and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo the declared winner by the Electoral Commission restrained from holding himself out as the president-elect.

The EC is the First Respondent while Mr Akufo-Addo is the Second Respondent.

In 2013, Mr Lithur was in the William Atuguba-led Court as the lead counsel for Mr Mahama, then the First Respondent.

Another renowned lawyer Tsatsu Tsikata represented the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in that suit.

Already, there are reports Philip Addison, who represented the three petitioners in 2013 as their lead counsel, could be the lawyer for Second Respondent Nana Akufo-Addo.
