  • Forgiveness heals emotional wounds – Mrs Gladys Oduro

The wife of the Yennyawoso District Minister of The Church of Pentecost, Mrs. Gladys Oduro, has admonished Christians to forgive their offenders in order to receive healing for their emotional wounds and live long.

According to her, bitterness is one of the killer diseases that fights against Christians and deteriorates the health of the individual.

“Many people are dying out of bitterness. When someone offends you just forgive and forget because forgiveness heals emotional wounds and prolongs one’s life,” she advised.

She emphasized that bitterness ruins one’s relationship with God and other people, and hinders the prayers of the individual as well.
She, therefore, cautioned all not to harbour pain and bitterness in their heart, saying, “If someone hurts you, it is good to go to them and point out their fault so that peace prevails.”

Mrs. Oduro, however, stated: “For the sake of peace, if going to point out one’s fault will even inflame passions and worsen the situation, it will be prudent to stop and forget about it.”

She reminded Christians that forgiveness is reciprocal, stressing that “if we do not let go of our brothers’ sins, God will not also forgive us our sins.”

Mrs. Oduro made these assertions during the Yennyawoso District 2020 Christmas Convention on Saturday, December 26, 2020, at Krofrom M/A Division School Park, Kumasi. The convention was held under the theme, “Jesus Christ; The Prince of Peace” – (Isaiah 9:6).

Dilating on “Peace” with Romans 12:18 as the anchor text for her sermon, Mrs. Oduro charged believers to strive to live at peace with all manner of persons. She admitted that, “though some people are irritating and disturbing to handle and live with, we are enjoined as Christians to tolerate and accommodate them.”

She noted that it is not just enough for believers to accept Jesus Christ, who is the Prince of Peace but they are to demonstrate His peaceful nature to others.

Describing Christians as agents of peace and peacemakers, Mrs. Oduro urged them to make way for such qualities to reflect in their marriages, families, homes, workplaces, among others.

“As Christian couples, we should not consider divorce as an option when things turn out to be horrendous because marriage is a lifelong journey,” she indicated, adding, “Whatever the case is, we must ensure that peace ensues.”

With emphasis on peace in the church, she noted that signs and miracles that have taken nosedive in the church nowadays are due to the fact that there are factions and divisions among believers. She asked, “How can God be merciful and come to us in the midst of chaos and confusion?” She, thus, called for a change of heart and attitude to create an atmosphere of acceptance by God so that He [God] can work among His people.

Quoting Hebrews 12:14, Mrs. Gladys Oduro warned that failure to live peaceably with one another will cost Christians eternal life and for that matter, “we must try as much as possible to live by God’s Word and pursue peace because the Scripture does not speak in vain.”

She also advised parents to avoid being discriminatory towards their children in order to foster unity and ensure peaceful coexistence among them.

  • I want the same thing Akufo-Addo wanted in 2012 election petition – JDM

Former President John Dramani Mahama says many were those impressing upon him to vacate his petitioning the Supreme Court over the outcome of the December 7, 2020 presidential polls.

He said those people continually ask him what it is he is seeking to gain from the exercise.

And according to the former president and candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the election, his answer to that question is that he is seeking the same thing President Akufo-Addo, then candidate of the New Patriotic Party in the election, sought when he petitioned the apex court in 2012.

Mahama caused his lawyers to file the petition Wednesday afternoon, and explained why he chose to go to court, during a late night broadcast.

“Let me tell you: I want, perhaps, the very same thing that my opponent wanted when in 2012 he challenged the results of that election; I want the removal of doubt. I want for all of us to know that our elections should be free, fair, and safe—and that we do not have to settle for a process that leaves us confused, and with more questions than answers.

“I want a Ghana where institutions of state can be held to account. Where we can stand on principle and demand transparency without the risk of losing our lives”, he said.

According to John Mahama, when people lose their lives—as seven people did in the election, “we are moving backwards not forward; we are unraveling the very fabric of our democracy; we are risking the loss of three decades worth of progress.

“When today we see armed military and militia in our collation centres and election outcomes declared at the point of a gun, for us who have witnessed our country’s journey through all its post-independence travails, we wonder if we have truly exorcised the ghosts of our tortuous past. We must continue to be a nation in which our young citizens have faith in our institutions, trust the rule of law, and rely on the presence of peace because there is justice.

“Ghana must be a country where we citizens know and believe, without any doubt whatsoever, that the way forward is determined by the will of the Ghanaian people. And that we can hold our institutions of state accountable and guarantee that they work in favour of the national interest and not in the interest of the administration or person in power.

    “That is what I want.

“This is why earlier today, my lawyers filed a petition in the Supreme Court of Ghana challenging the declaration of the results of the December 7, 2020 Presidential Election made by Mrs. Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

“I have been compelled to do this because of her clear failure to act in accordance with the Constitution.”

The exercise is in accordance with the law which requires the EC to gazette the presidential and parliamentary results of every election.

  • Post Election 2020: Assembly Members call on NDC to seek redress in court

Greater Accra Assembly Members has called on opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to call its sympathizers to order and seek redress of outcome of the just ended 2020 December elections in court.

In a statement delivered by Mr Alfred Adjei, General Secretary of the Greater Accra Assembly Members (GAAM), said chapter five of the 1992 Constitution allows any individual to seek redress in court if suspected their rights has been violated.

According to him, there is a precedent of resolving electoral related disputes in a competent court of jurisdiction.

“We therefore encourage the NDC leadership to chart a course already blazed by the NPP in 2012 by going to court with their body of evidence to challenge the election results as law abiding citizens.”

According to the group, leaders of the NDC are inciting their followers against the Electoral Commission (EC) and the media.

“We must state with emphasis that the behavior of leadership of NDC is inciting their fellowers against the EC and subsequently a accusing the Ghanaian media for conniving with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rig the 2020 presidential and parliamentary polls..”

The group said it was worried about the persistent protests amid burning of vehicle tyres in the streets across the country without approval from the Police, and described the incidents as creating fear and panic.

He called on the police to arrest and prosecute groups and individuals whose actions threaten the peace and security of the country.

  • Gazette of Hohoe Parliamentary results will not affect court’s order – Lawyer

Lawyer Nelson Kporha, Counsel for the applicants in the Hohoe Parliamentary election injunction case, says although the Electoral Commission (EC) has gazetted the Hohoe Parliamentary results it would not have any consequence on the restraining order from the Ho High Court.

He said restraining the EC from gazetting Hohoe MP-elect, John-Peter Amewu, was just one of the reliefs, disclosing that they were aware of the gazette before going to Court.

Mr Kporha, who is one of the Counsel’s for applicants, secured an interim injunction restraining the EC from gazetting John-Peter Amewu, New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament-elect for Hohoe.

Meanwhile, Ghana News Agency’s (GNA) checks revealed that the Hohoe Constituency election was gazetted by the EC on Tuesday.

Mr Kporha said the EC’s gazette was just “a presumption of elections,” which is a periodical publication that has been authorised to publish publicly or legal notices, usually established by statutes or official action, could be legally nullified, therefore it would not have any consequences on the order they sought from the court.

He said “we are not bothered by the gazette,” we have other reliefs or orders that could make our case still hold.

Mr Kporha said to restrain the respondents, especially the MP-elect from presenting himself as such between January 7 to January 2025, still is legal before the law.

He said another is the availing himself to be sworn-in as Member of Parliament for Hohoe Constituency or holding himself as such.

A Ho High Court on Wednesday granted an interim injunction restraining the EC from gazetting John-Peter Amewu, New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament-elect for Hohoe.

The Court presided over by Justice Mr George Buadi granted an ex parte application filed by Professor Margaret Kweku, National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Hohoe Constituency, Mr Simon Allan Opoku-Mintah, Mr John Kwame Obimpeh, Mr Godfred Koku Kofie and Mr Felix Quarshie.

The respondents in the case are the EC, Mr Wisdom Kofi Akpakli Hohoe Municipal EC officer, Mr Amewu and the Attorney-General.

The Court held that the EC be restrained from seeking to gazette the MP-elect with the order lasting for 10 days from Wednesday.

The Court also ordered the MP-elect from presenting himself to be sworn-in as the MP for Hohoe Constituency or holding himself as such.

  • Kwesi Jonah calls for review of mode of appointment of EC Chairperson, Commissioners

A Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG), Kwesi Jonah is calling for a review of the mode of appointment of commissioners of the Electoral Commission.

According to him, the current mode of appointment is a contributory factor to the lack of confidence in the EC as expressed by the NDC in the just-ended elections.

Currently, the President upon the advice of the Council of State appoints the EC Chairperson, the two Deputies, and the four other members of the commission.

President Akufo-Addo in July 2018 nominated the current chair of the commission, Madam Jean Mensa, and her two deputies and were subsequently approved by the Council of State after the previous Chairperson, Charlotte Osei and her two deputies, Georgina Opoku Amankwa and Amadu Sulley were removed from office.

Kwesi Jonah says the appointment of the EC officials must be done on broader consultative grounds in order to engender trust among stakeholders.

He further proposed an amendment of the necessary laws to enable Parliament to vet and approve or disapprove of persons nominated to occupy the office.

“The process of appointing the chair, the deputy chairs, and other members of the Commission have not been very consultative and that is why anytime someone is appointed is seen as someone who is coming to serve the interest of the government that appointed him or her,” he said.

“We (Ghana) should look at it and make the process of appointment a bit more consultative, transparent, and open. Probably amend a section of the provisions of appointment so the chair will be vetted by Parliament and be voted upon,” he added.

  • Malaria tops OPD attendance in Akuapem North

The Akuapem North Municipality has recorded a total of 10,021 cases of malaria between January and October this year, topping the list of all diseases reported at the Out-Patients Department (OPD) of health facilities in the area.

The figure comprised 2,531 reported cases of under-five malaria and 156 cases of malaria in pregnancy, even though it indicates a slight decrease in the recorded cases of malaria in the previous year, malaria remained the number one cause of OPD attendance in the municipality.

This was made known at a stakeholders dialogue on the 0.5 District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) for malaria-related activities, under the People for Health Project being implemented by a consortium including Send Ghana, Pensplusbytes, and the Ghana News Agency, at Akropong.

Mr Paul Arthur, the municipal health information officer who shared the information mentioned non-compliance to the usage of the long-lasting insecticide nets and poor hygienic practices as some of the key factors leading to the malaria cases.

Mrs Harriet Nuamah, Senior Programs Officer at Send Ghana, said their findings had shown that the 0.5 DACF for malaria was not utilized because the district health directorates failed to claim the money’s for malaria-related activities whiles the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) also overlooked its disbursement.

She noted that most of the health directorates were not even aware of the existence of such a facility to fund malaria education in communities and so those monies were channeled into other things at the expense of malaria which had the highest cases of OPD attendance in many health facilities across the country.

She, therefore, called for a strong collaboration between the MMDAs and the health directorates to ensure that the 0.5 DACF was released to enable the latter to undertake outreach malaria education and sensitization programs to reduce the impact of the malaria burden on socio-economic development.

Mrs Nuamah hinted that Send-Ghana was considering requesting the 0.5 DACf to be deducted at source from the common fund and paid directly into the accounts of the respective districts health directorates for efficient utilisation of the fund to achieve the intended purpose.

Also, she said there was an engagement at the national level to set up malaria committees at the district level with clear guidelines as part of the agenda to make malaria a priority in the healthcare delivery sector.

  • Life is very difficult for MPs Joseph Osei-Owusu confesses

First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu has confessed that Parliamentarians face difficulty because Ghanaians do not know the work of their parliamentarians.

According to him, although the constitution stipulates that Parliamentarians are lawmakers, their Constituents think they are agents of change through development.

He indicated that constituents are of the view that Members of Parliament are rather agents of development hence their failure to provide developmental needs of the people creates some form of difficulty for MPs.

He said while speaking in an interview with Accra-based TV3 monitored by MyNewsGh.com that “It appears to me that what the constitution assigns a MP and what the voter expects of a Member of Parliament are irreconcilable.”

“The voter expects the MP to be the agent if development whereas the constitution makes the MP the legislator.”

“I think that to be fair Ghana is becoming money prone,” he stressed.

  • Akufo-Addo’s swearing-in will take place in Parliament Government

The government says the swearing-in of President-elect, Nana Akufo-Addo will take place at the Parliament House instead of the Independence Square.

Deputy Information Minister, Pius Enam Hadzide who addressed a government press briefing said the decision is based on a request made by the leadership of Parliament in November 2020.

He said all COVID-19 safety protocols will be followed for the inauguration to be held at the new location.

“On the 3rd day of November 2020 when President Akufo-Addo commissioned the office facilities under the physical infrastructure projects of Parliament in Parliament House, Accra, parliament made a passionate representation to him that the nation at large that they want subsequent swearing in of presidents of the republic to happen in parliament and before parliament in accordance with Ghanaian laws and international best practices.”

“The transition team has favorably considered the request of the Parliament of Ghana stated by Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu [Majority Leader] and has hence decided that the swearing-in of President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo on the 7th of January 2021 shall happen before parliament and with the precincts of parliament,” he said.

The deputy minister said the transition team is working closely with the leadership of parliament to ensure that the inauguration is successfully held.

The Majority Leader in November said Parliament has resolved to discontinue the practice of swearing in newly elected Presidents at the Independence Square instead of Parliament.

The constitution stipulates that a newly elected President should be sworn in before Parliament, however, by convention, all newly elected Presidents except the first term of President John Agyekum Kufour have been sworn in at the Independence Square.

“The House has decided that the President-elect must follow the rules, subject to security considerations, be sworn-in in the presence of Parliament, before parliament and in parliament. The parliament of Ghana is proposing that the swearing-in of the president-elect should be done in the present precincts of parliament as it happened during the first inauguration of President Agyekum Kufuor.”

Article 57(3) of the 1992 Constitution states that “Before assuming office the President shall take and subscribe before Parliament the oath of allegiance and the presidential oath set out in the Second Schedule to this Constitution.”

Some have interpreted the dictate of the constitution as having the president-elect being sworn in anywhere so long as parliament is convened there and not necessarily within the precincts of the Parliament House.

  • Election 2020: UFP mount pressure on EC to redeclare correct results within 48 hours

The United Front Party (UFP) has given the Electoral Commission (EC) a two-day ultimatum to redeclare the true results of the 2020 polls else face the wrath of the feud parties.

The political party said the flip-flopping of the EC and the frequent changing of figures on the EC website is a clear indication of the flawed nature of the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.

The leader of the party, Nana Agyenim Boateng said Madam Jean Mensah’s conduct has eroded gains made by the EC in the past decade and called on the citizenry to rise against her inactions to safeguard Ghana’s democracy.

He also wants the EC to involve disgruntled parties to remedy the mishap before it leads to civil uprising as witness in other countries in Africa. Adding, “if chaos or something bad happen in this country Jean Mensah would have herself to blame”.

Speaking at a press conference held at Kumasi on Tuesday, 22 December 2020; Mr. Agyenim argued that the conduct of the commissioner has subverted the will of many Ghanaians.

He, therefore, called on well-meaning Ghanaians and respectable Civil Society Organizations to revolt and speak against the irresponsible act of the Electoral Commission.

He told Maxwell Attah, a freelance journalist in a sideline interview that: “Nana Akuffo Addo was selected as president by Jean Mensa and some media, while John Mahama is the true president elected by majority of Ghanaians in the December 7 elections.”

He noted that the just-ended presidential poll was rigged by NPP IT unit and endorsed by Madam Jean Mensa, as media houses who claimed their figures tallied with the EC have all been proved to be false, couple with constant massaging of figures by EC on daily basis.

Against this backdrop, he implores the media to interrogate the matter and mount pressure on the EC to declare another results that truly reflect the 2020 presidential polls.

  • ECG explains how its prepaid customers get debts

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says it has started work to improve the communication link between its servers and prepaid meters to reduce instances of its customers getting debts on their meters.

In a press release addressing concerns by the Institute of Energy Securities about the service it renders to prepaid customers, the ECG said its team of technical staff have been deployed to upgrade the communication network between the prepaid meters and its servers which has resulted in debts for some customers.

Addressing concerns by the Institute of Energy Securities about the service it renders to prepaid customers, the ECG said there is no feature in the prepayment system that converts electricity credit to debt.

“Currently, a team of technical staff have been deployed to upgrade the communication network between the prepaid meters and the server, and this has resulted in the increasing debts of customers whose meters have been operating on credit mode, and as such have not made any commensurate purchases of electricity used over the months,” the release said.

“We take this opportunity to thank our affected customers for their patience, and the IES for raising the concerns of customers. However, we wish to assure our stakeholders that we have already started assiduous work to improve the communication link between the server and the meters, as well as replace faulty meters with new ones”.

The release signed by the Managing Director of ECG, Kwame Agyemang-Budu added that in some “minimal cases, prepaid customers stay connected even after their credit runs out which can lead to a debt which is deducted at the next deposit.

“ECG currently operates internationally approved standard prepayment metering systems for over 2 million customers using the approved PURC tariff. There is no feature in the prepayment systems that converts electricity credit to debt, nor is there a facility where “the more a customer buys electricity, that customer will owe ECG”,” the release said.

“Generally, with ECG prepaid meters, money is deposited into a meter account and dispensed with an approved tariff till it is finished, then the meter disconnects electricity supply till another deposit is made. In some minimal cases, the meter breaker stays connected and the meter continues to record the customer’s consumption on a zero balance, and this can lead to a debt”.

The release further explained that there can be a lag in communication between ECG servers and some smart meters deployed in 2014 which can result in a negative balance when communication is restored.

“For some smart meters deployed in 2014 in parts of Accra, the money is deposited into the customer’s account on a centralized server and gets dispensed only when the meter is remotely connected to the server,” the release said.

“Delayed routine reconciliation due to failed remote communication between meters and the server automatically switches the meters into credit mode and allows the customers to consume electricity beyond their remaining credit. This usually results in a negative balance when communication is restored between the server and the meters.

“In most cases, debt after the reconciliation of the customer’s initial deposit and the actual electricity consumed is scheduled for payment on flexible terms for the customer”.

    PRESS RELEASE

RE: THE ECG MUST QUICKLY RESOLVE THE CHALLENGES OF PREPAID CUSTOMERS

The Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) attention has been drawn to a media release on 21 December 2020, by the Institute of Energy Security (IES) to quickly resolve challenges of prepaid customers.

    The ECG wishes to explain the situation to its stakeholders and our cherished customers as follows;

ECG currently operates internationally approved standard prepayment metering systems for over 2 million customers using the approved PURC tariff. There is no feature in the prepayment systems that converts electricity credit to debt, nor is there a facility where “the more a customer buys electricity, that customer will owe ECG”

Generally, with ECG prepaid meters, money is deposited into a meter account and dispensed with an approved tariff till it is finished, then the meter disconnects electricity supply till another deposit is made. In some minimal cases, the meter breaker stays connected and the meter continues to record the customer’s consumption on a zero balance, and this can lead to a debt.

For some smart meters deployed in 2014 in parts of Accra, the money is deposited into the customer’s account on a centralized server and gets dispensed only when the meter is remotely connected to the server. Delayed routine reconciliation due to failed remote communication between meters and the server automatically switches the meters into credit mode and allows the customers to consume electricity beyond their remaining credit. This usually results in a negative balance when communication is restored between the server and the meters.

In most cases, debt after the reconciliation of the customer’s initial deposit and the actual electricity consumed is scheduled for payment on flexible terms for the customer.

Currently, a team of technical staff have been deployed to upgrade the communication network between the prepaid meters and the server, and this has resulted in the increasing debts of customers whose meters have been operating on credit mode, and as such have not made any commensurate purchases of electricity used over the months.

We take this opportunity to thank our affected customers for their patience, and the IES for raising the concerns of customers. However, we wish to assure our stakeholders that we have already started assiduous work to improve the communication link between the server and the meters, as well as replace faulty meters with new ones.

Customers who require further information or have peculiar challenges with their prepaid meters are being advised to call ECG customer service centre on 0302 611611, where their details will be recorded for the metering experts to take up the issues and work promptly to normalize the situation. Thank you. END.

  • Government wont be distracted by incessant protests by NDC Mustapha Ussif

The Executive Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS) and Member of Parliament elect for the Yagaba/Kubori constituency of the North East Region, Mustapha Ussif says the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not be distracted by the incessant protests by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Supporters of the NDC across the country have been protesting the outcome of the 2020 elections.

Aside from grievances at the constituency level, the NDC has also rejected the outcome of the presidential election which saw Nana Akufo-Addo declared President.

But in an interview on the Point Blank segment on Eyewitness News, Mr. Ussif expressed disappointment at the leadership of the party for fuelling the protests.

“I am not worried about the protest all over but concerned for a candidate who gave the green light to his followers to protest instead of seeking redress in court unlike Akufo-Addo in 2012 who accepted the verdict of the Supreme Court though he disagreed with it. The party leadership is inciting demonstrations among its followers by throwing dust into their eyes.”

“I am so happy about the turn out of elections. And clearly, NDC is not contesting the results of the presidential election because John Mahama knows very well that he lost. It is just unfortunate that people tend not to be honest. He does not want to accept defeat,” he added.

He further indicated that the governing party will not be distracted by the NDC.

“President Akufo-Addo has been declared the winner of the elections. The results have been gazetted. We are however focused on delivering the mandate given us with hard work and will not be distracted.”

Mr. Ussif, who won the seat in the 2012 elections and later lost it to Alhaji Ibrahim Abdul Rauf Tanko in 2016, has successfully made his way back to parliament with a landslide victory.

Mr. Ussif won 18,153 votes (64.01%) while 9,393 votes (33.14%) were recorded for the incumbent, Alhaji Tanko.

In the same constituency, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo managed to win 17,099 votes against 9,881 votes for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Mahama.

This is the second time Mr. Ussif and the NPP have won the seat since its creation in 2004.

He said, “There is total breakdown of law and order, command and operations within the security services.”

“There is total breakdown of discipline within the security services. I experienced it when a whole officer of the Ghana Police service was issuing instructions and an ordinary rank was countering the instruction of the officers.”

“When a Police junior officer was brutalizing me a sitting Member of Parliament and our officer was standing and the officer cannot talk because that junior officer was talking instructions from a political person who has control over the Police service.”

“Today we think it is Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, no. It is the moral fiber of this country which is being adulterated and mutilated. It is something we must all rise up to.”

According to them, land guards have over the past years been disturbing them but several reports made to the Ejisu District police command have yielded no result.

To the residents, they have lost hope in the police, and if the Ashanti Regional Police command therefore if Otumfuo Osei Tutu II does not act swiftly to address the land guard menace in the area, they would be forced to take the law into their own hands.

  • Electoral Commission denies receiving notice of minority petition presentation

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has denied allegations that it received prior notice of the Minority caucuses presentation of a petition scheduled for Tuesday at its head office in Ridge, Accra.

Haruna Iddrisu, the Minority Leader in Parliament, on Tuesday told the media that the Chairperson of the EC refused to accept the Minority caucuses petition despite an earlier notice.

“We note that she refused to see or acknowledge us and contemptuously refused to receive a lawful and harmless petition…That also sets a good precedent for us that elected representatives of the people can be ignored as she did us,” he said.

But explaining why no official was available to receive the petition, the EC in a statement said: “For the record, the Electoral Commission wishes to inform the General Public that it did not receive prior notice of the said presentation of the petition from the Minority Caucus.”

“The letter gives the start time of the said presentation as 10:00 am, giving the Commission no notice to receive the Minority Caucus given that the Chairperson and her senior team were not in the office,” the EC said.

  • Well protect Ghanas democracy A. B. A. Fuseini

Alhassan Bashir A. Fuseini, popularly known as Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, the MP for Sagnarigu, has said the opposition NDC is prepared to lay down their lives to protect and defend the democracy of Ghana.

“If we [NDC] have to die to defend this democracy we will do it. We would not allow anyone to suppress us,” A. B. A. Fuseini told Joy News in a report monitored by GhanaWeb, based on their protest march to the Electoral Commission head office in Accra.

He added that the purported declaration of the Techiman South parliamentary seat by the EC is fraudulent and lacked transparency.

“Article one of the [1992] constitution of the Republic which is the supreme law of the land enjoins Ghanaians to have a bonding duty to rise up and defend our democracy and that is what we just did,” A. B. A. Fuseini stressed.

“They are subverting the will of the people and the democratic decision that the people took on December 7…where they go and vote and they steal the votes for Nana Akufo-Addo.”

The Minority caucus in Parliament on Tuesday marched to the Electoral Commission headquarters to submit a petition but was physically frustrated from the Parliament House through the Ridge Hospital neighbourhood to the EC offices.

Alhassan B. A. Fuseini noted that the march they embarked on is to protect the will of the electorate and demand that the Techiman South parliamentary results are re-collated.

  • Votes of candidates in Techiman South results exceeds total valid votes – Kwaku Azar

A professor of law and accounting, Stephen Asare, popularly known Kwaku Azar has raised mathematical questions over the publication if the Techiman South presidential results which was declared by the Electoral Commission.

The outspoken lawyer is wondering why the total votes the candidates got were far more than the total valid votes cast announced by the EC on the face of its pink sheet.

The lawyer although commending the EC wondered why they could make such an error.

“I struggle to understand some of the numbers though. Take, for instance, Techiman South where Nana got 46,379 votes and Mahama got 52,034.

When I add those votes, I get 98,413 votes. However, the form also says total valid ballots is 97,227.

I am struggling to understand how the sum of the valid votes acquired by the two candidates (98,413) exceed total valid ballots (97,227).

In fact, when I add the votes obtained by all candidates I get 99,436, which of course exceeds the total valid ballots of 97,227.

However, the total votes obtained by all the candidates is equal to the total votes cast.”

Things turned confrontational at the Electoral Commission’s Headquarters in Accra when some Minority members in parliament stormed the Electoral Commission’s Headquarters to present a petition.

  • Sunyani records sharp increase in Christmas consumables

Traders in Sunyani, the Bono Regional Capital, have experienced high sales of Christmas consumables, as the season sets in, a Ghana News Agency (GNA) market survey has revealed.

Traders at the Central Business District (CBD) said they were happy about the high demand for Christmas products and expected sales to rise by the 24th of December.

The demand for oil, rice, tomato paste, and soft drinks have increased compared to last year’s festivity, Madam Nasta Abass, a shop keeper, said on Monday.

“Business is booming and we are extremely excited. Though prices for commodities have seen a slight increase, buyers are patronising, few of them sometimes complain, however,” she added.

Currently, the market price of five kilos of rice, she said, ranged from GHC65.00 and GHC32.00 instead of the previous GHC60 and GHC27, while that of five litres of oil and one litre was between GHC55 and GHC10 respectively.

Previously, market prices for oil at the CBD hovered around GHC8 and GHC50 for one litre and five litres respectively.

Dealers in Christmas toys and guns told the GNA that they had been encouraging as compared to the last season.

“I can now sell about 80 pieces of baby toys, guns and ribbons every day and price bargaining is not common nowadays,” Philomena Abenaa Kwakye, said.

Dealers in vegetables, including tomatoes, pepper and onions at the CBD have also been having a field day.

They said buyers from neighbouring Burkina Faso patronised the items in bulk, and if that continued it could lead to shortage of vegetables in the season.

  • Police defend transfer of officer allegedly attacked by Ajumako DCE

The Ghana Police Service has defended the decision to transfer one of its men who was assaulted by a District Chief Executive (DCE) in the Central Region.

The Inspector-General of Police, James Oppong Boanuh, last Friday ordered the transfer of Corporal Frank Mensah citing safety and health concerns.

While at post at the Ochiso Police Station, the officer was attacked by unidentified men on the orders of the DCE for Ajumako/Enyan/Essiam, Ransford Kwasi Nyarko.

He was later hospitalized after he sustained life-threatening injuries sparking widespread agitation among police officers in the area.

But there are heightened fears amid social media reports of attempts to discontinue investigations after the officer was reposted to the Winneba District Police Headquarters.

Reacting to the claims on Monday, December 21, police spokesperson at the Central Regional Command DSP Irene Serwaah Oppong confirmed the directive but said the reports are unfounded and must be disregarded.

“The transfer of the policeman from Ochiso Police Station to his new station is to give him protection. The police administration also sees it necessary that the police officer should be sent to where he can get easy access to medical facilities”, DSP Oppong remarked.

She further clarified that: “The police administration also anticipates that the officer has gone through psychological trauma and needs to see a clinical psychologist. In this case, he has been transferred to a new police station where all these services are available and the police officer can be protected”.

The DCE and one Bob were arrested in connection with the incident which occurred on December 2, 2020.

The two have since been granted bail by the police as investigations continue.

  • Accra Mayor and National Fire Service contradict NADMO and NPP on causes of market fires

Government officials appear busy to hang the various fires in the market on the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

An arrest has been made in the Volta Region, in connection with the Kantamanto market fire outbreak in Accra about a week ago, and pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) newspapers, including Daily Guide, have in a coordinated manner reported that the alleged arsonist, is a supporter of the opposition NDC.

NPP activists and Deputy National Youth Authority boss, Akosua Manu, on Metro TV, on Monday, December 21, 2020, painstakingly pushed the arson on the NDC and directly accused the party’s National Chairman, Samuel Ofusu-Ampofo, as the one behind the fires, insisting that the alleged audio recording which has him in a criminal trial, has elements of market burnings, murders and kidnapping among other criminal activities.

Interestingly, the Mayor of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Mohammed Adjei Sowah and the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Ellis Robinson Oko, did not mention arson, but suggested that the fires are due to illegal electricity connection in the markets.

The AMA boss in particular, said the illegal connections in the markets, are being addressed with an arrangement with the Millennium Development Authority (MIDA) to redevelop the markets, adding procurement procedures are ongoing.

Both the Accra Mayor and the Ghana National Fire Service, Ellis Robinson Oko, separately spoke from the scene of the fire.

Indeed, in the Kantamanto market fire, it is emerging that a contract has been awarded to a private company, Gold Coast Contractors to modernize the market.

It is unclear, whether the company deliberately set out the fire in the densely populated market as a means of clearing the place ahead of the construction, which is likely to meet some resistance from the traders.

But, ahead of the arrest in Ho, the Deputy Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), had alleged arson against the NDC, although he did not provide any basis.

Abu Ramadan, had taken to Facebook, hours before the arrest “Fire under control. You want to be President but yet burning markets and peoples investments lost. NDC a curse to Ghana”.

The newspapers, including Daily Guide, The Searchlight, the New Crusading, the Finder and others, have in a syndicated publication claimed that the man was arrested in Volta the Regional capital, and the police sources gave his name as Daniel Dah Kormlah, 41.

According to the newspapers, police sources have disclosed that Daniel was identified through police investigations into the Kantamanto fire incident.

The reports said that police and other intelligence agencies had begun arresting persons believed to be linked to recent arsons in some markets across the country.

In November the Odawna Market in Accra, got burnt, followed by Kantamanto market then followed by the Kaneshie market, Ghana News Agency (GNA) reported that some nine shops got burnt.

The Liberty House branch of the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) also got burnt. In Koforidua in the Eastern Region, a fire incident occurred.

The newspapers claimed that a joint team of Police and Intelligence operatives left Accra on Thursday, December 17, 2020, in pursuit of the suspect.

The suspect was arrested at his hideout in Ho in the Volta Region on Friday evening December 18, 2020, at about 10 pm. It said that upon further interrogation, it was realized that the suspect was an active member on various political platforms, namely NDC Group Administrators, Renaissance Agenda 2020, among others.

The report said phone records showed several conversations with other persons aimed at incitement to riot and possible conspiracy to attack other state institutions.

It claimed that the suspect had admitted to the said conversations and to engaging with like-minded persons to execute some acts with the potential to breach the peace of the nation, sources say. The security agencies are carrying on with their investigations to apprehend more suspects in the coming days, one source stated.

The NDC’s Lawyer, Edudzi Tamakloe, fired back at Abu Ramadan in another Facebook post, saying “Ordinarily, I won’t give this further publicity but this is the Deputy National Director of NADMO making a serious allegation of arson against a political party without basis”.

“In any serious country, the Police should be inviting him to give a statement. But nobody will call him because he is the in-law of Dr Bawumia. In 2012, Let My Vote Count did a rally in Taifa with many speakers”.

One young man who spoke at the event stated clearly that “they (NPP members) should burn the markets and bomb schools to attract international attention.”

Abu Ramadan was a member of that group. They think others will do what they possibly did in the past. A deputy NADMO boss, do a fire incident report to the Police. This is shameful”.

Indeed, there are suspicions that the NPP is using the fires to demonize the opposition NDC to defuse the ongoing demonstrations against the irregularities that the party is complaining about with respect to the 2020 election.

The Police service is yet to officially speak on the matter of the arrest and the extent of its investigations.

The GNA reports that he Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has called on the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to undo illegal connections at market places to avert the increasing incidence of fire outbreaks at such places.

Ellis Robertson Okoe, Divisional Officer II, Head of Public Relations, GNFS, said such checks were important because investigations into the fire incidents showed that most fires were caused by electrical faults.

The call followed another fire outbreak at the Kaneshie market on Saturday, after similar incidents were recorded at the Kantanmanto Market in Accra and other markets in the Eastern and Central regions.

He said the markets had witnessed congestion over the years with new power connections, some of which were done illegally and haphazardly and must be checked.

“So until these issues are checked, the fires will continue.”

Mr Okoe said a Fire Service personnel had an electric shock when fighting the Kantamanto Market fire a few days ago, and stressed the need for illegal connections to be checked.

“This disrupted fire fighting for about 30 minutes because we had to call ECG to cut off the power before we continued.”

“This made some people to conclude that the Fire Service came to the scene to watch if there was an outbreak before bringing our fire tenders to start fire fighting, which was not the case” he added.

Mr Okoe advised ECG to as a matter of urgency deploy a task force to check and undo illegal connections at the markets.

The PRO also called on traders to ensure that they always extinguished naked flames after cooking in the markets.

The Kaneshie Market fire, which occurred in the late hours of Saturday night, engulfed nine fabric shops, which also served as a tailoring shop and a warehouse.

Out of the nine shops, six were totally burnt and the remaining, partially salvaged.

Mr Okoe said the fire was brought under control at midnight and totally extinguished within 30 minutes.

He said the cause of the fire was not immediately known but suspected electrical faults.
