  • Alleged kidnappers abandon victim after being rejected

Unidentified men who kidnapped a teenager on Friday around Area 52 in Ho made a U-turn by returning their ‘catch’ only when a voice rejected the boy’s offer for a girl’s preference.

The victim, (name withheld) narrated to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) from his hospital bed that some unidentified kidnappers took him, hostage, outside their gated house, when he stepped out to pass urine.

He said what he could remember was a hand blindfolding him and could later hear a voice rejecting his gender, in an unknown environment, all this time still in the sack with hands and face tied with ropes.

According to Mr Selorm Awadi, the father of the 14-year-old kidnapped teenager (name withheld) said his son was picked by the men, who managed to conceal the victim in a white sack and was abandoned at the vicinity of the area, where he was earlier kidnapped. He told the GNA that his son ran an errand to buy bread for the household before 0900 hours, and could no longer be located at home afterwards.

He said the whereabouts of his son could not be ascertained until word went round that a boy was abandoned in a sack around the popular Mirage pub area in Ho.

Mr Awadi said he thought that development or incident was far away from him and was never worried until the reality beaconed.

Mr Prosper Kofi Pi-Bansah, Ho Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), who conveyed the victim to the Municipal hospital for medical attention, said this could be a clear case of a ritual operation gone good for the victim and bad for the kidnappers, after confirming the incident to the GNA.

The dumbfounded MCE appealed to parents and guardians to be vigilant over their children especially teenagers as the nation positioned itself for another election in December. Meanwhile, hospital sources said the condition of the victim was stabilised after receiving treatment.

The Municipal Police Command has begun investigations into the alleged kidnapping episode.

  • Filing of nomination: Presidential aspirants commend Electoral Commission

Presidential aspirants who filed their nomination to contest for the December Elections have commended the Electoral Commission (EC) for putting in place the process to ensure free, fair and transparent general elections.

They said the Commission had been open and receptive to their concerns despite the fact that they had come up against challenges in the filling of their nomination forms.

Madam Akua Donkor, Aspirant of Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) praised the Election Management Body, for restoring the right logo of the Commission, which was in line with all state institutions.

“This is the right logo for the Commission. It is the same being used by institutions of all state institutions and I did not understood why it was changed. The Police, Military, Ministries, Judiciary, Embassies among others are using the same logo why must the past EC administration change it,” she quizzed.

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Alhaji Mohammed Frimpong, indicated that petty administrative lapses in the electoral process should not be over-dramatised.

Speaking after the submission of the presidential nomination forms of the flagbearer, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, the General Secretary said the EC should be allowed to work.

“For the first time, the Commission took the trouble to give us the checklist and it falls within our understanding that disagreements within our institutions should not be overdramatized as if Armageddon is going to fall on us,” she said.

  • Mireku Duker explains why thugs attacked his family

Tarkwa-Nsuaem MP, Mireku Duker, has explained why a group of people attacked his family over the weekend.

The MP was attacked on Saturday, October 10, 2020, in what was suspected to be related to a chieftaincy dispute.

However, narrating the incident to Joy News, the MP explained that the attack started with a knife that was pulled on a boy over suspicion that he was recording the thugs who perpetrated the act.

The attackers had allegedly been misbehaving at a funeral.

“We normally have funerals in front of one of our family houses. So, one boy, between the ages of 10 and 13 was around holding a phone when the thugs were misbehaving. Thinking that the small boy was recording them, one of the thugs called the boy to bring his phone for them to check whether or not he was recording,” he said.

He added: “So one of my nephews questioned them on why they were attacking the young boy and that provoked them.”

He added that a lady who was also at the scene was not forgiven when she questioned the thugs on why they were carrying out the attacks.

The MP said following the attack, his family has been moved out of Dompin, the MP’s hometown, to ensure their safety.

Mireku Duker also revealed that one person is currently in police custody over the matter.

“The police were brought in after the incident and they arrested the suspect,” he said.

  • Mfantseman MP was shot by contract killers, not armed robbers Kennedy Agyapong alleges

Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong has assured residents of Mankessim and the family of murdered Mfantseman MP, Ekow Quansah Hayford of justice.

He disclosed that preliminarily investigation conducted by his team indicates that the MP was killed by contract killers and not armed robbers as the media is reporting.

Speaking during a courtesy call on the family to express his condolences Monday, the business mogul said, he will do everything in his power to ensure the arrest of the killers within the shortest possible time.

While warning some persons who described themselves as eyewitnesses, Mr Agyapong said their narratives were hindering the investigation by the police.

The vociferous MP said this is making it difficult for the facts surrounding the attack to be ascertained.

Explaining further, Mr Agyapong said, the police currently have on record a man who alleges to have been present during the attack on the Nkusukum Mankessim-Abeadze Duadze road in the Central Region but his narration does not seem to add up.

The legislator also revealed that prior to the death of the MP, Elvis Morris Donkoh who is the current MP for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese constituency had received a call from some unknown person warning him about threats to his life.

He said Mr Donkoh had also been urged to call the late Mfantseman MP and NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam Constituency since their lives were also in danger.

  • Murder of Mfantseman MP highlights string of killings in the area Queen mother laments

The Queen mother of the Mankessim traditional area, Nana Araba Otua II, has urged the government to resolve the string of killings in the area, highlighted by the murder of the Mfantseman MP, Ekow Quansah Hayford.

Nana Araba Otua II catalogued a spate of killings in recent years which, she said, was a source of “great concern”.

The traditional leader mentioned the killing of a BNI Director, Samuel Ampofo and a police officer, L/Cpl Kingsley Kofi Boahen within a space of two months.

The BNI Director was killed by gunmen who fired into a crowd during the coronation of the Omanhen in December 2019.

Barely a month later, L/Cpl Kingsley Kofi Boahen was found dead at dawn on the Mankessim-Assin Fosu road.

He was killed in an armed robbery attack. The IGP placed a 10,000 cedis bounty on the killers. While some arrests have been made, these killings remain unresolved.

“Sadly, the people responsible for these killings are still at large,” she lamented in a statement to reporters.

Her statement follows the killing of the Mfantseman MP, Ekow Quansah Hayford, on October 9, 2020, by suspected armed robbers at dawn.

The late NPP MP was returning home from a campaign when assailants sealed off the Abeaze Dominase road he was travelling on and shot him together with his driver. Ekow Hayford died instantly, his driver is fighting for his life in a coma.

Expressing condolence to the bereaved family, the Omanhen of the Mankessim traditional area, Nana Araba Otua II called for an end to the spate of killings.

“These criminals must be found. The killings must stop”, a portion of the statement reads. The late NPP MP had had cause to also express concern about insecurity in the constituency.

Following the killing of the L/Cpl, Kofi Boahen, he had urged the security agencies to step up efforts in ensuring justice is served.

Stressing this call, the Omanhen said the “decent people of Mfantsiman cannot and should not live in fear.”

Mankessim holds cultural and political importance among the Fantes. It operated as the capital of the Fante confederacy in the 19th century.

The Mfantseman constituency is within the traditional authority of Mankessim.

  • Oti region still NDC stronghold in spite of split from Volta Ephson

Pollster Ben Epshon has revealed that the Oti region will be a stronghold of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in spite of the split from the Volta region.

Mr Ephson said on the Elections 360 programme with co-host Stephen Anti on TV3 that the split of the region by the Akufo-Addo administration will have no effect on the voting pattern in that part of the country.

“Oti region will still be an NDC stronghold,” he said on the programme on Monday, October 12.

Mr Epshon further explained that anytime any of the two leading parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the NDC lost less than 70 per cent of votes in their strongholds they go ahead to lose the elections.

“You will have to win a certain percentage. For example, any time the NPP has won less than 70 percent in Ashanti and less than 60 percent in Eastern region, they lose the elections because that is your stronghold.

“In Volta region, a new book I am working on shows that the NDC lost over a hundred thousand votes in Volta region alone compared to 2012.

“So if you strong hold you are losing votes and you are losing votes in the other places. And that is the cause of apathy.”

  • Attack on Mireku Dukers home adds to growing list of attacks on politicians

Attacks on the political class or persons close to them seem to be gaining notoriety as a common feature in the lead up to the upcoming December 7 polls.

In the last couple of weeks, four incidents of attacks on members of the political class have been reported, one of which has been fatal.

The close proximity of these attacks has caused some to wonder if there is a deliberate scheme by some unknown persons to target the political class.

On Saturday, October 3, 2020, the office of the pro New Patriotic Party (NPP) political think tank, Danquah Institute, located at Labone in Accra, was broken into by unknown persons.

The burglars allegedly stole some valuable items including laptops and GH¢12,000.

Then on Wednesday, October 7, 2020, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) campaign team was attacked by armed robbers at Ejuratia in the Afigya Kwabre District of the Ashanti Region.

The robbers took away two mobile phones and an unspecified amount of money.

The driver of the campaign vehicle Sawadogo Mahmood disclosed that two out of the five occupants of the saloon car were severely beaten by the robbers.

Then on Friday, October 9, 2020, the attacks turned fatal as the Member of Parliament for Mfantseman in the Central Region was shot dead by suspected armed robbers.

Six gunmen according to an eye witness attacked the MP and his campaign team while they were returning from campaign around 1.00 am, Friday.

The eye witness explained that in the process of de (the) robbery the late Ekow Quansah identifies (identified) himself as a lawmaker and after accusing the MP and the political class for the many problems the country is facing shot him to death.

The incident reignited calls by the legislature for dedicated security protection for them, a call that has been shot (down) by security analysts as selfish.

Finally, in the string of attacks on the political class or persons close them, two family members of Tarkwa-Nsuaem Member of Parliament, George Mireku Duker, suffered severe cutlass wounds on Saturday, October 10, 2020, after they were attacked by some assailants.

It is unclear what triggered the attack but it has been linked to a protracted chieftaincy dispute at Dompem, the hometown of the MP.

One of the victims is said to be in critical condition while the other is responding to treatment.

Political analysts have dismissed suggestions that the attacks are part of an elaborate plot to target the political class.

  • No government official has been arrested in UK with £26m Oppong Nkrumah

Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has said it is untrue that any government official has been arrested with £26 million in the UK.

He added that it is also untrue that British authorities have intercepted a haul of cash from Ghana to the UK.

Speaking on Takoradi-based Skyy Power FM on Monday, the Minister accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of fabricating the news as part of their planned propaganda ahead of the December polls.

According to him, as the country draws closer to the December polls, the opposition NDC will deploy all manner of propaganda tools in a desperate bid to sway voters pointing to the substantive matter as one of such propaganda techniques.

“It is a total fabrication and we are clear in our minds that it is a fabrication by the NDC and it is part of their strategy for these last eight weeks where they will churning out a lot of fabrication, lies and fake audiotapes.

“We are clear in our minds that it is the NDC for one or two reasons. The first person to articulate it publicly is Inusah Fusieni, NDC MP for Tamale Central.

“They are the ones who are championing it and articulating it on their online media platforms including Radio Gold online. And now you can also find that there is a fake audiotape that purports to be a piece of international news broadcast on it which is being circulated since last night,” he said.

He said the strategy is similar to the one deployed by the NDC weeks before the 2008 general elections and has been part of their propaganda architecture, especially in election years.

However, the Minister called on the media and the general public to ignore such fabrication and most importantly be on the lookout for similar concoction in the future from the NDC as the two major political parties in the country battle for votes.

“We are calling on first of all the media and the general Ghanaian public to not fall for these fabrications and fake doctored or cooked up tapes that they are going to be churning out in the next eight weeks as we get ready for the elections,” he added.

He said the current government has exhibited a lot of incompetence so far as the management of security is concerned, and that is why we have rising crimes in Ghana.

He said with the election coming up and when we have weak institutions, rising crimes and the proliferation of arms then it poses a bit of a problem.

  • Oil contracts cancelled over Coronavirus

The coronavirus has led to the cancellation of some petroleum contracts, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Commission, Egbert Faibille Jnr., has disclosed.

Egbert Faibille also indicated that the impact of the COVID-19 induced contract cancellation affected local jobs in the oil and gas sector.

“The consequential effect of the cancellation of contracts amidst the already reduced workforce in the industry resulted in lay-offs of both expatriate and local personnel. Over 500 Ghanaian workers in the industry are expected to lose their jobs as a result of the pandemic.”

“Local businesses have been significantly hit by the pandemic. The pre-COVID-19 outlook of the industry resulted in considerable investment in infrastructure, personnel and technologies in anticipation of participation in major projects.

Indeed, over 98 contracts worth over $389 million were awarded by Aker Energy, AGM, Eni, GOSCO and Springfield from Q4 2019-Q1 2020.

“The cancellation of these contracts such as the 5-year Maersk Drilling contract which was terminated in June 2020 together with associated sub-contracts would have a devastating toll on local businesses,” he said while briefing the Western Regional House of Chiefs on the petroleum sector.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Mfantseman constituency in the Central Region, has initiated moves to find a replacement for Mr Ekow Kwansah Hayford, the party’s Parliamentary nominee for Election 2020 who was killed last Friday by suspected armed robbers.

This is in line with Section 4 of the Public Elections Regulations 2020, C.I. 127, which states that: “Where at the close of nominations, but before the election, one of the candidates dies, a further period of 10 days shall be allowed for nominations.”

The NPP in the Mfantseman constituency is yet to settle on a candidate to represent the late Ekow Kwansah Hayford but is hoping to find one this week to meet the 10 days deadline specified in law.

Ekow Kwansah Hayford who was the Member of Parliament for the area and was seeking re-election filed his nomination forms on Thursday, October 8, 2020 only to be killed the next day.

The EC closed the filing of nominations on Friday, October 9, 2020 same day as the MP was killed at dawn.

As part of the processes for re-election, Mr Hayford battled it out with a new entrant Mr James Korsah-Brown in June 2020 where the NPP delegates endorsed him.

    Replacement

In an interview with Graphic Online’s Central Regional correspondent, Shirley Asiedu Addo, the first Vice Chairman of the Mfantseman constituency, Mr Yaw Berchie-Nuako said the constituency executive would meet by mid week to decide on a nominee and propose same to the national executive for approval.

He said they were hoping that whoever they select will be a winnable candidate to step in the shoes of the late Mr Hayford.

“The constituency executive here are on the grounds and so we know who can win the seat for us,” he stated.

Mr Berchie-Nuako stated that there was no way the national executive could impose any person on the constituency.

Is it going to be Ekow Kwansah’s widow?

Asked if the party was considering bringing the widow of the late MP, Mr Berchie-Nuako did not give a definite answer except to say that the nature of the death was a great blow to the family.

    Korsah-Brown

Asked if the executives would consider Mr James Korsah-Brown the only candidate who had contested the late MP in the primary in June 2020, he said “like I said we don’t have any name yet. The executives would decide and let you know,” he stated.

    NPP will retain seat

The NDC held the seat for 8 years before the NPP’s Ekow Kwansah Hayford snatched it from them in 2016.

“Our late MP was a good man who did a lot of work. His four-year work as MP is far more than the NDC’s work in 8 years,” he stated.

He said any candidate chosen would ride on the excellent works of the late MP.

“We are not going to rely on sympathy votes. The works of Kwansah Hayford speak everywhere and we are optimistic that the NPP will retain the seat,” he added.

He urged NPP members to remain calm and support the family in prayers.

“I was with him when the incident happened and I have still not recovered from it. It has hit us hard but we are praying and know it will make us even stronger,” he added.

The companies involved are Letshego Ghana with outstanding issuance of GH¢70.67m; Edendale Properties (GH¢17.35m outstanding); Bayport Financial Services (GH¢191.56m); Ghana Home Loans (GH¢361m); PBC Ltd. (GH¢37.7m); ESLA Plc (GH¢2.37bn); Bond Savings and Loans (GH¢29.6m); Quantum Terminal (GH¢95m); and Dalex Finance (GH¢130m).

An analyst of the Fixed Income Market, who preferred be anonymous, said in an interview that the prospects for the bonds are positive, especially as private and institutional investors have begun receiving their locked up funds in the liquidated non-bank financial institutions and fund management companies, and would be exploring options to reinvest those funds.

“Also, with the poor performance of the stock market in recent years, the corporate bond market offers an opportunity for investors to earn returns above GoG securities, given the risk premium,” the analyst said.

Investors are looking forward to the impending bond issuances due to the significant risk premiums being offered, over both government debt securities and bank fixed deposits.

As at September 2020, corporate bonds offered coupon rates of up to 20 percent compared with similarly tenured government bonds (three to five years tenor) which offer well below 19 percent. Shorter term government treasuries offer between 14 and 16 percent.

Likewise, interest rates on fixed deposits, as at August 2020, were on average of about 11.5 percent for three months tenor.

Although corporate bonds are medium to long term with regard to tenors, the high liquidity on the Fixed Income Market means that bondholders can exit their investments whenever they choose since buyers are generally readily available.

Even though corporate bonds are riskier than government securities, the companies with prior approval for new issuances are widely regarded as safe investment bets.

  • Robbery attacks: Too early to conclude politicians are being targeted Col. (rtd) Festus Aboagye

Colonel Festus Aboagye (rtd), a security analyst says it will be a case of hasty generalization for one to assume that recent armed robbery attacks on some politicians are indications that politicians are being targeted ahead of the elections.

In the past few days, there have been three separate robbery attacks on politicians and a political institution.

Danquah Institute, a think tank that aligns with the ruling government had their offices robbed by some yet-to-be-identified persons.

A statement signed by the Executive Director of DI, Richard Ahiagbah, disclosed that the robbers made away with laptops, flash drives and a sum of GH¢12, 000.

On Thursday, a campaign team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was attacked by robbers in the Ejuratia in the Afigya Kwabre District of the Ashanti Region.

Then today, October 9, 2020, the MP of Mfantseman became another victim of recent robbery actions.

In an interview with GhanaWeb, Colonel Festus Aboagy (retired) said the facts with respect to these armed robbery attacks do not support assertions that politicians are being targeted.

“Those who established the road blocks might not have known that at a certain particular time, this person might be arriving. In earlier instances, they attacked more than one vehicle. This one happens to be the MP’s vehicle alone. They may not necessarily have mounted the road blocks for him. They were probably looking for an opportunistic target,” he remarked.

“The other one in the Ashanti Region, they may or may not know that at that particular time, that group was going to come. Linking it directly to elections may not be correct at this point. Christmas is also around the corner and if it had not been for COVID-19, people will be travelling a lot so that could be another scenario”, he said.

The 24-year-old has begun the Segunda Division strongly, making 4 appearances to help place the side in 7th position after 4 round of games.

Should the transfer materialized, Mohammed will miss the first half of the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League as Atlético Madrid submitted their squad-list on Tuesday, October 6.

  • Total financial system assets expanded in 2019 BoG

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has noted in its Financial Review Report for 2019 that Total financial system assets expanded in the period under review.

The assets of the financial system increased to GHC186.11 billion at end-December, 2019 from GH?168.42 billion at end-December, 2018.

The improvement in the asset of the financial system was on the back of expansions in the banking, insurance, and pension sectors.

In the securities sector, a ban on guaranteed investment products and resolutions targeted at sanitising the sector, led to a drop in managed funds (excluding pension funds).

In the medium-to-long term however, these initiatives together with plans to recapitalise the securities sector are expected to bolster growth.

As at end of December 2019, the banking sector had the greatest share of total financial sector assets constituting approximately 76.78 percent, followed by the pensions (14.13 percent), securities (5.57 percent) and insurance (3.51 percent) sectors.

Broadly, the financial sector remained well-positioned to support economic growth and financial stability.

Interconnectedness of the Financial System Total exposures of banks to the other financial institutions6 approximately amounted to GH?1.5 billion as at end-December 2019.

Exposures of banks to the other financial institutions were mainly in the form of loans and investment placements with the other financial institutions.

In the year under review, universal banks were largely exposed to securities firms (GHC845.30 million), specialised deposit-taking institutions (SDIs) (GHC652.04 million), insurance companies (GHC25.86 million) and pension institutions (GHC0.12 million).

  • Liquidity risk is well contained in the banking sector BoG

The Bank of Ghana has noted that profitability within the banking sector improved during the year under review. Return-on-Equity (ROE) increased to 28.65 percent at end-December 2019 from 27.70 percent at end-December 2018.

Similarly, Return-on-Assets (ROA) increased to 2.87 percent at end-December 2019 from 2.26 percent at end of December 2019, the BoG said.

The positive growth in profits was mainly as a result of increasing net interest income.

Improvement in the earnings of banks is expected to reinforce capital accumulation efforts of banks and banking sector soundness.

Liquidity risk is well contained in the banking sector. Liquidity measures generally remained unchanged during the period under review.

These measures indicated that the banking sector was in the position to cover its immediate and short-term debts and obligations.

The improved liquidity stance was mainly driven by the increase in cash and balances due banks mainly as a result of the recapitalisation exercise and subsequent increase in long-term deposits after the clean-up of the banking sector.

    Activities of money doublers

The broadcast of the activities of money doublers and credit card loaders have been on the rise over the past year with many broadcasts on digital television platforms.

The broadcasts usually operate on a similar format with a fetish priest or Mallam and an assistant offering the promise to double a sum while deposit numbers scroll on the screen.

In May this year, their activities came to the notice of the Minister of Information, Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah who confirmed that he had petitioned the BoG and the National Media Commission on the worrying development.

He tweeted: “I have written to the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and National Media Commission (NMC) to take note of the activities of money doublers on TV and act as appropriately to tackle it. The Ghana cedi which is produced under the authority of the BoG cannot and ought not be duplicated”.

  • Postpaid customers refusing to settle bills after expiration of government’s 3 months electricity ECG

The Electricity Company of Ghana is lamenting how some of its non-lifeline customers have refused to settle their bills after the expiration of government’s three-month COVID-19 electricity subsidization in July.

Government as part of its efforts to ease the effects of COVID-19 on citizens in April announced the total absorption of bills for lifeline electricity consumers and 50% absorption of bills for non-lifeline consumers.

When the three-month period expired at the end of June, government extended the subsidy for the remainder of the year for the lifeline consumers and said non-lifeline consumers were to revert to paying their bills in full.

Speaking in an interview with the state broadcaster, GBC, the Director of Training for the Electricity Company of Ghana, Dr George Marfo said there has since the expiration of the subsidy been some reluctance on the part of non-lifeline consumers using postpaid metres in settling their bills.

“Our clients will not willingly come to our places to pay, we were devising new strategies to get them to pay. We felt that if we sensitize them they will willingly come to the offices to pay rather than resorting to disconnection and those things that create a lot of inconveniences.”

He said with the government subsidy expired and clients refusing to come in and settle their bills, ECG is going to embark on a sensitization campaign to make the public aware of the expiration in the hope that they will be informed enough to settle their bills so that they as a power distribution company can keep on serving the nation with uninterrupted power supply.

  • Ga chiefs to demonstrate against government over seized lands

Some chiefs of the Greater Accra Region have asked the government to immediately release to them lands that were confiscated by the state years ago for government projects but never used.

A statement issued by Nii Anang Amartey on behalf of Nii Kweitia We-Anumansah of Teshie and Amartse We said all efforts to get the land released have proved futile.

To that end, they have served notice to hit the street against the government.

“After series of petitions to the government to revert their lands, the president had eventually acted on their request by asking Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and Lands Commission to ensure a smooth release but unfortunately, the sector minister, Asoma Cheremeh is attaching lackadaisical attitude to the release process,” the statement said.
“We would like to make it clear to the president that our portion of the land he asked lands ministry and Lands Commission to release to us has already allegedly been sold by the caretaker.

“We would also like to put it on record that compensation has never been paid over the land since its acquisition by the state in 1970.

“Since our last meeting with the lands ministry which took place on the 22nd of September 2020,we have never heard from the minister again even though he told us we shall hear from him.

“We are indigenes of Kweiman, hence we are not prepared to be relocated to different land owned by different community.

“We would like to also inform you that plans are being put in place with other neighboring communities facing similar challenges to embark on a four day continuous demonstration to protect our territorial integrity.

“We shall communicate the date for the commencement of this demonstration to you as soon as possible. What it takes to embark on such exercise is to notify the police but not seek their permission; and we shall certainly do.”

  • Vote for Nana Akufo-Addo to continue with the development – Bawumia

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has asked Ghanaians to retain the government in power to continue with the many developments and social intervention programmes.

He said the December 7 election would be a choice between the era of untold hardships under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) or the few years of social interventions programmes by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He said under the NDC, Ghanaians encountered five years of power outages, youth unemployment, non-functioning ambulance service, arbitrary increase in utility and the absence of Teaching and Learning Materials (TLMs).

Dr Bawumia, who said this when he addressed a Durbar at Atobiase in the Wassa-East District to begin his two-day working visit to the Western Region, appealed to Ghanaians to give President Akufo-Addo the chance to change the fortunes of the country.

According to him, the NPP Government pursued a vigorous agenda to bring relief to the people of Ghana such as the free SHS policy, 1D1F, restoration of teacher trainee and nurses trainee allowances, planting for food and jobs, cocoa interventions and producer price increases, among others.

Dr Bawumia said the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic had gained global recognition and commendation with the free provision of water and electricity, COVID-19 alleviation fund to business owners, tax rebates and free meals to the populace during the lockdowns and students.

Nana Opiah Mensah, Acting Chief of Wassa Atobiase, in his address, commended the government for the unprecedented infrastructural development in the area.

He advocated the construction of a senior high school for the town since it was far from the district capital, Daboase.

He called for the provision of a mobile telecommunication network to solve the area and making it difficult to make calls and use internet services.

Nana Mensah also reminded him for the construction of a bridge over the Pra River to connect the residents to the neighbouring towns which makes it difficult for the children to cross during school days, as promised by President Akufo-Addo some time ago.

Mr Joseph Boahen, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of COCOBOD, noted that the free SHS policy had benefitted the majority of Ghanaians without which many children would have dropped out of school and called on the people to vote for the continuation of the policy.

Touching on cocoa production, he announced that the cocoa pruning and hand pollination initiative introduced by the government has tremendously changed cocoa production in the country, bringing big relief to farmers.

He urged the people not to take the National Democratic Congress’ ( NDC) propaganda of free fertilizer seriously and said it was not achieved when they were in government.

The CEO of Cocobod touched on the compensation package given to cocoa farmers whose farms were affected by the swollen shoot disease and said that was a huge investment of the NPP Government towards cocoa production.

He hinted that fifty-thousand youths would be engaged to embark on the cocoa tree cutting exercise to rid the farms of the dreaded swollen shoot disease for a replant.

Mr Boahen added that the cocoa pension scheme was vigorously pursued to give a befitting retirement package to cocoa farmers in the country.

Mr Wilson Arthur, Wassa-East District Chief Executive touted achievements in the education and skills training sector and said scholarships were given to students to further their education to higher levels and livelihood empowerment programmes.

He mentioned that the District had benefitted from two of the One-District, One-Factory (1D1F) initiative programmes to create employment to the teeming youth.

He said the administration had seen a lot of infrastructural developments in the three years.

Among the projects are the provision of potable water, construction of access roads, provision of the skills development centre and improvement in mobile telecommunications network among others.
