  • People use wrong measuring rods to access MPs Majority Leader

Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has noted that lawmakers are being measured with wrong yardsticks.

He explained that if parts of the country lack development projects, the first person to blame is the Member of Parliament for the area. However, he said, it is not the duty of the legislator to provide these projects.

The Member of Parliament for Suame constituency explained in an interview with Berla Mundi on the New Day on TV3 Wednesday September 23 that MPs are not agents of development rather, facilitators.

The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs said “I always want us to look at the functions of a Member of Parliament. What are the functions of a Member of Parliament, a representative of a constituency?

“Matters come to parliament you deliberate on them, that is the deliberative functions of a Member of Parliament. Then, because you speak from an informed perspective you transmit information to the populace, so there is the information transmission of a Member of Parliament.

“Then the power of purse function of a Member of Parliament that is interrogating agreement in particular budgets that come before us.

“The financial control function of parliament are you able to do that? Are you able to perform your oversight functions as a Member of Parliament? And then business legislation . These are the core responsibilities of a member of parliament .

“People really apply the wrong measuring rod in judging the performance of Members of Parliament . Members of Parliament are not agents of development. They are facilitators and so now the focus is on development.”

He however, blamed some MPs and aspirants for this development saying that they create the wrong impression by promising to provide projects.

  • Today in history: BNI, CID foil coup plot on Jubilee House; three arrested

In September 2019, the government of Ghana announced that security agencies had been able to foil a plot by some individuals targeted at the Presidency.

It was reported that the people invaded the Jubilee House with the ultimate aim of destabilizing the country.

Read below a statement announcing the government operation which resulted in the arrest of some individuals including a medical doctor:

On Friday, 20th September 2019, a joint security operation of personnel drawn from Defence Intelligence, CID and Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), conducted a successful operation which led to the arrest of three persons and the retrieval of several arms, explosive devices and ammunition from locations in Accra and Bawaleshie near Dodowa.

    2. The joint operation was to neutralize an elaborate plot targeted at the Presidency, and with the ultimate aim of destabilizing the country.

The arrest and seizure come after fifteen (15) months of surveillance and gathering of evidence on the activities of the prime suspects and others.

    3. The persons arrested are Dr. Frederick Yao Mac-Palm and his two accomplices Mr. Ezor Kafui (a local weapon manufacturer) and Mr. Bright Allan Debrah Ofosu (aka BB or ADC).

    4. The following items were retrieved as part of the operation: a. Citadel Hospital (Alajo, Accra);

    5 x locally manufactured pistols with magazines fitted on. 1 x foreign pistol (Reg. No. PX154006) with 2 X magazines. 3 x locally manufactured pistol barrels. 3 x smoke grenades.· 22 x Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). 9 x 7.62mm NATO AK47 rounds. 2 x AK47 magazines.· 1 x long Knife.

    The outlined plan for the operation presented by some soldiers at one of their meetings at Next-Door Resort. 7 x mobile phones. 2 x IPADs 2 x decoders 1 x modem 3 x tablets 1 x Ghanaian passport 2 x pen-drives 1 x voice recorder 1 x USB connector

Machines and materials for manufacturing weapons and IEDs.

    b. Bawaleshie near Dodowa 63 x 9mm NATO rounds.

    5. Surveillance on the activities of the persons involved commenced in June 2018, when Dr. Mac-Palm and Bright Allan Debrah Ofosu (“BB” or “ADC”), started organizing a series of meetings at the Next-Door Beach Resort, in Teshie, and other locations in Accra, in furtherance of their objectives.

    6. Between June and August 2018, BB, acting for and on behalf of Dr. MacPalm, contacted a number of serving military personnel, and talked them into hatching and executing a plot to obtain weapons, take over key installations, and secure funding for the purpose of taking over the reins of government. These meetings were closely monitored.

    7. In August 2018, Dr. Mac-Palm and two others, Kennedy Amoah and Dr. Albert Sam (Based in the USA) formed a group called “Take Action Ghana” (TAG), under the guise of mobilising the youth for nation-building, education, health, and providing shelter to the needy. Evidence available shows the intent was to build a support base of youth, and radicalize them against the political authority in Ghana.

    8. In furtherance of this scheme, Dr Mac-Palm contracted one Mr. Ezor from Alavanyo to produce locally made weapons and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) for the operation. In July 2019, Mr. Ezor set up a workshop in a container, originally used as an X-Ray laboratory, at the premises of Citadel Hospital, and started producing the weapons and IEDs in-house.

    9. On 10th September 2019, Dr. Mac-Palm and Mr. Ezor procured from the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, some essential chemicals to be mixed with gun powder, stone chippings, surgical needles and powdered pepper for their operations. He also contracted a worker at the Base Workshop in Burma Camp to supply 10 AK 47 riffles. He made an advance payment of GH¢7,000.00.

    10. On Thursday, 19th September 2019, at about 2300 hours, still under surveillance, Dr. Mac-Palm, Mr. Ezor, and one soldier went to an area close to the Laboma Beach to test fire some of the locally manufactured weapons.

    11. On the following day, 20th September 2019, between 0915 and 1755 hours, a team of security personnel undertook the operation which led to the arrest of Dr. Mac-Palm and his accomplices, and the subsequent retrieval of the items listed above.

    12. The IEDs and all the exhibits are currently in the custody of the BNI, whilst investigations are being carried out for further action. Meanwhile, the suspects are undergoing interrogation.

    13. State security agencies assure the general public that they remain vigilant, and will work to safeguard national security and public safety. The public is encouraged to remain calm and advised to provide information on any suspicious persons or activities to the police for necessary action.

    14. The Government of Ghana will also continue with efforts to provide the necessary logistics and motivation to the security agencies for intelligence gathering, capacity building and other operations, to protect the country from terrorism, subversive activities, and other violent crimes.

  • Aiyinasi South circuit supervisor advises JHS graduates to lead decent lives

The Aiyinasi South Circuit Supervisor (CS) of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region, Slyvester Nkansah has advised the just-ended Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates to lead decent lives.

He disclosed that at the Holy Child School Examination Center one nursing mother and a pregnant candidate wrote the exams and therefore advised all female students to lead a decent lifestyles

He said, “They have to lead the very decent lives because this is not the end, after writing the BECE and the examiners are going to mark it and you should expect something good so the female ones among them, they are those that matter most, even at the centre here we realized that one is a nursing mother and we saw another one too who is pregnant so my advice to them is that they should lead decent behaviour so that their parents will prepare and get the zeal to further their education.”

He added that “because when you lead a very bad behaviour within the society, the parents will not get that confidence to send you to the second cycle institution to further your education so they should not compare themselves to others who could not get the opportunity to further their education, this is an opportunity and as such they get the opportunity to further their education so they should behave well”.

Mr Nkansah, therefore, took the opportunity to revealed that even though the examination went on well but some candidates went to the exam hall with some foreign materials of which they were tracked.

“Everything went on smoothly without any problem. The little problem we encountered was that we found out that most of the children want to enter the examination hall with some foreign materials and we were able to track all of them so for the examination we didn’t get many problems.”

He added, “actually some of the students their confidence wasn’t as expected, some of them their performance was below average, others too were very good, they were written something so I will is okay”.

“Actually we had 9 schools of which 5 is from the south and 4 from the northern sector that is the Aiyinasi north.”

“A total number of candidates were 208 but we had 7 absentees, we were expecting 208 at this center but 7 were absent so the number of the candidates that wrote the BECE at the Holy Child center were 201”.

He explained further that, “what I heard from their teachers was that most of them stopped immediately they were registered and others too travel to their hometowns and they didn’t come back.”

Mr. Nkansah commended the security and the invigilators for excellent work done.

In all, over 1,000 sat for the 2020 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Ellembelle District which started on Monday, September 14 and ended on Friday, September 18, 2020, in 6 centres.

  • NPPs Charles Bissues face swollen after fight with Tarkwa-Nsuem MP

Less than 72 hours after the alleged fight between presidential staffer Charles Bissue and Tarkwa-Nsuem MP George Mireku Duker, pictures of the former with his face swollen has hit social media.

The trending photos also show Mr Bissue with a bloodied eye which is forced open for examination.

JoyNews sources say the fight between the two governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) politicians occurred at the Kingston Hotel in Takoradi during a workshop for Regional executives and Parliamentary Candidates.

According to sources, Mr Mireku Duker and Charles Bissue have not been on good terms since the latter allegedly supported an independent candidate over the incumbent during the parliamentary primaries.

The report further indicates that, during the meeting, there was a misunderstanding between the MP and the regional party executive.

Eyewitnesses say Mr Bissue who is also the Regional Secretary for the Party, amid the confusion grabbed the hands of Mr Duker and bite it several times causing the MP to bleed profusely.

The development is believed to have led to the exchange of punches between the two.

  • Coronavirus: US death toll passes 200,000

The US coronavirus death toll has passed 200,000, according to data from Johns Hopkins University (JHU).

More than 6.8 million people are known to have been infected in the US, more than in any other country.

The milestone comes amid an increase in cases in a number of states, including North Dakota and Utah.

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday the new death toll was a “horrible thing” and claimed China “should have stopped” the virus.

He also defended his record, claiming that had the US not taken action, “you could have two million, 2.5 or three million” dead.

JHU reported the new death toll of 200,005 on Tuesday. The university has been collecting US and global coronavirus data since the outbreak began late last year in China. The first case in the US was confirmed in January.

President Trump’s administration has been repeatedly criticised over its handling of the outbreak.

“Due to Donald Trump’s lies and incompetence in the past six months, [we] have seen one of the greatest losses of American life in history,” Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said on Monday.

“With this crisis, a real crisis, a crisis that required serious presidential leadership, he just wasn’t up to it. He froze. He failed to act. He panicked. And America has paid the worst price of any nation in the world.”

But on the same day, Mr Trump said he and his administration had done “a phenomenal job” and gave himself an “A+” for his handling of the pandemic.

He said the US was “rounding the corner on the pandemic, with or without a vaccine”.

  • One ‘killed’ in Cameroon anti-government protests

A protester was killed and others injured in Cameroon during anti-government protests held across the country on Tuesday, according to the opposition party’s lawyer.

The lawyer, Robert Amsterdam, tweeted a video of a protester lying motionless.

He wrote: “We are receiving reports that at least one protester has been shot and killed by police in Douala [the country’s biggest city] and many others injured and arrested.”

The government had warned of a firm response to Tuesday’s protests called by opposition leader Maurice Kamto.

The demonstrators were calling for an end to the Anglophone crisis and a reform of the electoral code.

Mr Kamto has suggested if the two issues are not addressed, the protests will continue until President Paul Biya is forced from power.

Mr Biya has been in power since 1982. He was re-elected in 2018 in an election that Mr Kamto claimed he won.

  • Six African heritage sites under threat from climate change

From rock art in southern Africa to pyramids along the River Nile, humans have been leaving their mark across the continent for millennia.

But extreme weather events, the rise in sea levels and other challenges associated with the changing climate are threatening to destroy invaluable cultural landmarks, a recent study warns.

Writing in the Azania journal, researchers from the UK, Kenya and the US say that “significant intervention” is needed to save these heritage sites.

As if to underline the warning, in recent weeks archaeologists in Sudan have been trying to stop floodwater from the River Nile from reaching the UN-designated World Heritage Site at al-Bajrawiya.

The river floods every year, but people working in the area have never seen the water spread so far.

The authors of the Azania report have identified a number of sites that they consider under threat.

    Suakin, Sudan

Suakin, in north-eastern Sudan, was once an extremely important port on the Red Sea.

Its story began 3,000 years ago, when Egyptian pharaohs turned the strategically located port into a gateway for trade and exploration.

Suakin later became a hub for Muslim pilgrims on their way to Mecca and played a significant role in the Red Sea’s slave trade.

It also became part of the Ottoman Empire, though it lost its prominence as a port once Port Sudan was developed further north at the beginning of the 20th Century.

Much of Suakin is in decay but it still contains fine examples of houses and mosques, the UN’s cultural organisation, Unesco, says.

Professor Joanne Clarke from the UK’s University of East Anglia is currently working on research to quantify the speed at which the loss is being caused by the rise in the sea level and coastal erosion.

“What we do know is that the Red Sea coast will be impacted in the coming decades, which means what currently survives will be lost [without intervention],” she says.

    Lamu Old Town, Kenya

The Old Town in Lamu is the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa, according to Unesco.

Unlike other towns and villages along the East African coast, many of which have been abandoned, Lamu has been continuously inhabited for more than 700 years.

It has also become a significant centre for the study of Islamic and Swahili cultures, the UN adds.

However, Lamu has been “severely impacted by shoreline retreat”, meaning it has lost the natural protection once offered by sand and vegetation.

This is partly about the change in sea levels but Prof Clarke also blames the construction of the huge Lamu port to the north of the Old Town, “which is destroying the mangrove forests that protect the island from flooding”.

“So a lot of what we would call natural heritage is a protection for cultural heritage. And as we destroy the natural heritage, we also leave cultural heritage sites exposed.”

    Coastal sites, Comoros Island

The Comoros, a volcanic archipelago off the East African coast, has several well-preserved sites, including a medina and a palace dating back hundreds of years.

But it is one of the places “most threatened” by sea level rise in Africa, Prof Clarke says.

In a plausible scenario of moderate-to-high global carbon emissions, “significant parts of the African coastal zone will be inundated by 2100”, according to the study.

“By 2050, Guinea, The Gambia, Nigeria, Togo, Benin, Congo, Tunisia, Tanzania and the Comoros will all be at significant threat of coastal erosion and sea-level rise.”

    Coastal forts and castles, Ghana

The coast of Ghana is dotted with fortified trading posts, founded between 1482 and 1786, that stretch 500km (310 miles) along the coast.

The castles and forts were built and occupied at different times by traders from Portugal, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Holland, Germany and the UK.

That infrastructure played a role in the gold trade and, later, in the rise and fall of the slave trade between Africa and the Americas.

But the forts are located in areas that are highly vulnerable to the impact of storm surges and the rise in the sea level.

Prof Clarke says some examples of that architecture, such as Fort Prinzenstein in Keta, eastern Ghana, are being “eroded into the sea”.

Comparing current images of the fort with ones shot 50 years ago, it is possible to see the way that the structure has crumbled.

    Rock art at Twyfelfontein, Namibia

Climate change can increase humidity in relatively arid areas, and create the conditions for the proliferation of fungi and microbial life on rocks.

That is what is happening at sites such as Twyfelfontein in Namibia’s Kunene region, which has one of the largest concentrations of rock art in Africa.

Unesco describes it an “extensive and high-quality record of ritual practices relating to hunter-gatherer communities in this part of southern Africa over at least 2,000 years”.

    But these could be lost.

    Djenné, Mali

The 2,000 or so mud houses of Djenné form some of the most iconic images of Mali. Inhabited since 250 BC, Djenné was a market town and an important link in the trans-Saharan gold trade.

In the 15th and 16th Centuries, it was one of the centres for the propagation of Islam across West Africa.

But climate change has affected the availability of high-quality mud used by the original residents for those constructions.

Local people, who have also seen their income drop due to crop failures, have to rely on cheaper materials which is “radically changing the town’s appearance”, the study says.

Prof Clarke says that “climate change has the ability to be a threat multiplier. It has indirect impacts which are arguably more serious than the direct impact”.

    ‘Unbelievably wonderful sites’

Some countries are better placed to deal with the impact of climate change on their cultural heritage.

Egypt, for example, sits on a low-lying region at “severe risk of flooding in the coming decades” yet is well-equipped to deal with some of the challenges.

There are places like the self-declared republic of Somaliland which has some ancient cave drawings but needs more help in protecting them.

Archaeologically, some of the “most unbelievably wonderful sites” exist there, Prof Clarke says.

Her research aims to shed light on those sites, which are little known to the rest of the world, and she fears “will disappear and no-one will know”.

  • Your level is below Besiktas – Ex-Turkish star attacks Ghana’s Bernard Mensah

Former Turkish international R?dvan Dilmen has made a damning statement about Bernard Mensah, claiming the Ghana midfielder’s level is below SupaLiga giants Besiktas.

Mensah joined the Black Eagles from Kayserispor on a loan deal with the option to sign permanently next summer.

The lanky midfielder has quickly established himself in the side, notching one goal in two games for the club in the ongoing campaign.

Despite the 25-year-old’s bright start in the capital-based outfit, former Galatasaray and Fenerbahce player R?dvan Dilmen, who is now a sport pundit with NTV Spor, claims the Ghanaian is a good player but not the kind to don the Black and White jersey of Besiktas.

“Mensah is not the player to play in Be?ikta?,” Dilmen said.

“Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, Besiktas, Trabzonspor, there are too many players who can not play according to my dreams in our long-established clubs . As far as I have seen, Mensah is one of them.”

“Not a bad player, of course, but the Anderson Talisca’s level should be the Jose Sosa’s level.”

Mensah was involved in 13 goals, scoring five and assisting eight in 26 games for Kayserispor last term.

  • Kotoko players deserve an increment Former captain appeals to management

Former Asante Kotoko captain, Amos Frimpong, has appealed to the current management led by the Chief Executive Officer, Nana Yaw Amponsah, to take a critical look at the salary structure of the playing body.

Frimpong spent eight seasons with Asante Kotoko after he joined the club from BA United in July 2011 before leaving the shores of Ghana to join Kaloum Stars of Guinea.

According to Amos, he left the club after 8 years of service to go and seek greener pastures elsewhere as the financial package that goes to players who plies their trade in Ghana is low as compared to those playing in other leagues.

He, therefore, appealed to the club’s new management and Board to take another look at the wages of the players.

“I will plead with the Asante Kotoko management to increase the salary of the players,” Amos Frimpong told Bright Kankam Boadu in an interview on Kumasi based Pure FM.

  • Hearts of Oak is part of the six elite African clubs to win treble

Ghanaian giants, Accra Hearts of Oak has gained the bragging rights over their fierce rivals Asante Kotoko after emerging as the only club from the West African state to win the recognisable treble in world football.

The Phobians are part of an elite number of clubs to have won three major trophies in a season on the continent, joining Egyptian giants Al Ahly, Congolese powerhouses TP Mezembe and AS Vita Club.

North Africans Esperance de Tunis and Mouloudia Club d’Algers complete the list.

Accra Hearts of Oak is the only West African club to have achieved such a significant mark, after winning the Ghana Premier League, the FA Cup and the CAF Champions League in the year 2000.

The Rainbow club hogged the headlines at the start of the millennium with some exciting football, boasting of some of the finest players in the country, with the likes of Ishmael Addo, Emmanuel Osei Kuffour and Sammy Adjei as the fulcrum of the squad.

The first African club to set the record of winning a treble in a single season was TP Mezembe in 1967, followed by Congolese rivals AS Vita in 1973.

MCA or Mouloudia Club d’Alger won the treble in 1976, before Accra Hearts of Oak in 2000 followed by Al Ahly, who did it twice in 2006 & 2007, and the last club to achieve the mark on the continent was the Esperance team of 2011.

Winning the treble has become a measure to justifying the greatness of a club, with Machester United boasting it’s status as the best club in England after their 1999 treble winning feat.

Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Bayern Munich are part of the few European elite sides that can brag of a consistent treble making feat.

  • Laid off GCNet staff demand outstanding salaries and severance package

Redundant staff of Ghana Community Network Services Limited (GCNet) are up in arms against the company for refusing to pay them outstanding salaries and severance package.

Their anger stems from the fact that the company is disobeying a decision of the arbitration panel appointed by National Labour Commission (NLC).

The decision of the panel was taken on Friday, September 4.

The workers were laid off when government terminated the trade facilitation contract of GCNet.

Expressing shock, disbelief and disappointment, the affected staff served notice to embark on series of industrial actions to press home their demand for immediate payment.

They observed that these acts were inconsistent with the value of integrity of SGS/GCNet.

Making reference to the Arbitration Award report, the affected staff said in the midst of Covid-19 pandemic, the action of the company has inflicted untold hardships on them.

They argued that GCNet would be making a claim to the government for compensation, which would include redundancy payments made to staff as a result of contract termination.

Some affected staff recalled some difficult moments in their over 19 years of employment, especially when they had to work assiduously during the period of transition to full paperless regime starting from September 1, 2017, leading and facilitating the integration process of the newly constructed state-of-the-art Meridian Ports Services (MPS) round the clock in record time.

They cited instances where they had to risk their lives across the length and breadth of the country to ensure all customs operational sites were always running seamlessly without any interruptions.

“We did it all of these with precision and love for company and mother Ghana. The call to duty was always adhered to without any resistance. We feel brainwashed to believe in integrity as the hallmark of the entire company. Those who preached and made us to live by integrity are now sweeping it under the carpet,” they said

  • We didn’t endorse NDC – Asankrangwa Chiefs

Chiefs at Asankrangwa have denied reports circulating that they have endorsed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the December 7 polls.

The Gyaasehene of Asankrangwa, Nana Adu Boahen is said to have made some statements to suggest they are solidly behind the NDC for victory, when NDC Running Mate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang visited the Amenfi West constituency on Tuesday, September 22, 2020.

In a statement copied to Peacefmonline, the Chiefs want the general public to know that the words of the Gyaasehene have been misconstrued, hence the need to set the records straight.

”The language we employed in our speech is the language use for every Presidential candidate and running mate who pays a courtesy call on Nananom. The Divisional Council has the history of neutrality on politics. We do so, acutely aware of the political divide that has polarised our traditional area and constituency. Rather than endorse, we encourage–and that is what we did when the lady Professor took her turn to visit us. It’s unfortunate that the language of neutrality Nana Adu Boahen employed, perhaps with the embellishment of royal diplomatic semantics, didn’t sit well with sections of the public.

”We spoke, being aware that all political parties have an equal chance of emerging victorious on the December 7 election, hence our reference to the lady Professor that, being in the race, she like all other candidates, has the potential to emerge victorious. We asked that when she has her turn to be in power, she should remember our deplorable circumstances and help us.”

The Chiefs also stated emphatically that ”the act of political endorsement is alien to our standard of neutrality and therefore would not engage in this divisive scheme…”

    Read full statement below:

    WE DIDN’T ENDORSE NDC–ASANKRANGWA CHIEFS

The Asankrangwa Divisional Area of the Wassa Amenfi Divisional Council issues this explanatory note to clear the misconceptions arising out of the statement made by Nana Adu Boahen, when Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman, the running mate to the NDC flag bearer visited the Amenfi West Constituency on the 15th September 2020. Nana Adu Boahen’s statement has been misconstrued, and we want to set the records straight as espoused below.

The language we employed in our speech is the language use for every Presidential candidate and running mate who pays a courtesy call on Nananom.

We spoke, being aware that all political parties have an equal chance of emerging victorious on the December 7 election, hence our reference to the lady Professor that, being in the race, she like all other candidates, has the potential to emerge victorious. We asked that when she has her turn to be in power, she should remember our deplorable circumstances and help us.

We spoke, knowing that any of the parties that comes to power on January 7 can potentially help us with development projects. As traditional rulers, we speak what will benefit the mass of our people.

This explanatory note does not proceed from prejudice, ill-will or fear; neither is it borne out of sychophancy or eye pleasing service. When it comes to Chiefs endorsing political parties and candidates, the Asankrangwa Divisional Area have the benefit of history that attest to our neutrality.

We stick to our statement that our area has long been neglected by politicians since 1992. This we reiterated during the visit of the Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman, and we shall continue to engage any other visiting political party on such developmental issues.

In conclusion, we Nananom of the Asankragwa Divisional Area, wants to affirm that the act of political endorsement is alien to our standard of neutrality and therefore would not engage in this divisive scheme which have a strong potential of hurting our common purpose and unity as a nation.

  • Record rise in weekly Covid-19 cases, but deaths down: WHO

The coronavirus pandemic appears to be accelerating worldwide, with new cases soaring last week to a new seven-day high of almost 2 million even as new deaths decreased, World Health Organization (WHO) statistics show.

In its latest global update late on Monday, the UN health body said 1,998,897 new cases of the novel coronavirus had been registered around the world during the week ending on September 20.

That marked a 6-percent increase from the week before and “the highest number of reported cases in a single week since the beginning of the epidemic,” the WHO said.

Since the novel coronavirus first surfaced in China late last year, it has infected more than 31 million people globally, while nearly 965,000 have died, according to the latest figures released on Tuesday.

Nearly all regions of the world saw new cases rise last week, WHO said, with Europe and the Americas seeing new cases swell by 11 and 10 percent respectively.

In countries such as the United Kingdom and Spain, restrictions were announced this week in fears of another outbreak as cases surged back to levels seen earlier in the year.

The United States continued to have the highest number of cases in the world, with more than 6.8 million infections, followed by India and Brazil

Only Africa, which has remained relatively unscathed by the pandemic, dodged the upward trend, reporting a 12-percent drop in new cases from a week earlier.

    Deaths declining

Even as cases shot up across much of the world, the number of deaths is going down, the WHO statistics showed.

Last week, some 37,700 new deaths linked to the virus were recorded worldwide, marking a decline of 10 percent compared with the previous week.

The decline was driven by the Americas, long the hardest-hit region, where new deaths were 22 percent lower than a week earlier, and by Africa where new deaths dropped 16 percent.

The Americas, however, still account for half of all reported cases and 55 percent of global deaths. The drop in new deaths in the region was driven mainly by decreases in Colombia, Mexico, Ecuador and Bolivia.

The US and Brazil continued to report the highest number of deaths, each reporting more than 5,000 new deaths in the past week.

Meanwhile, parts of Europe, experiencing a second wave of infections, saw the new death count shoot up to more than 4,000 for the seven-day period, a 27-percent hike compared with the week before.

France, Russia, Spain and Britain reported the highest number of new cases in the past week, while Hungary and Denmark saw the highest relative increase in deaths.

Britain continues to count the highest number of cumulative deaths on the continent at nearly 42,000 since the beginning of the pandemic.

  • Partey, Torreira swap deal unlikely Reports

Arsenal midfielder, Lucas Torreira, is close to joining Spanish La Liga side Atletico Madrid, according to reports in his native Uruguay.

Arsenal and Atletico are said to be in advanced stages in their negotiations over the 24 year old.

Arsenal were interested in facilitating a player-plus-cash deal involving Torreira for Atleti midfielder Thomas Partey.

But with Atletico only interested in signing Torreira on loan, that deal looks very unlikely.

Partey has been linked with Arsenal throughout the summer window but the Gunners have not been prepared to pay his £45m release clause.

The Ghana international is still yet to sign a new contract extension with Atletico which will see a significant rise in his release clause.

The position of Atletico on the future of Partey remains unchanged, and Arsenal will have to trigger his release clause if they are to have any chance of signing him.

Three police officers are facing interdiction, whiles three other persons have been arraigned before a court on offenses of conspiring to commit crime and defrauding by false pretenses.

The officers have been charged over their involvement with Owen Kwame Frimpong, a 46-year-old Shipping Consultant, and Evans Owuraku Amofa, 39, who defrauded a businessman of US$29,000 equivalent to GH? 163,850.

The report according to Myjoyonline stated the complainant and his boss in the month of April 2020, needed a specified quantity of Carbomer, a chemical used in the preparation of hand sanitizers.

The complainant through the help of a witness in the case is said to have reached out to Evans who promised to help them acquire the chemical.

The witness introduced Evans to the complainant at his office, at which point Evans suggested bringing on board his other accomplice, Owen.

The prosecution Officer, Inspector Pobee told the court during hearing that, “Evans left and later called the complainant to inform him that Owen was ready with the chemical, so they should meet him at Prampram to pay and collect it”.

The court further heard that the complainant and his boss accompanied by others met the accused persons on May 5, 2020, at Prampram for payment and collection of the chemical.

The merchandise is said to have been delivered by a lady instead of Owen in an ice chest.

According to the Prosecutor, the complainant, his boss, and others on their return to Accra with the Carbomer, “the complainant and the witness were arrested by Police with the ice chest and its content seized from them. They were later released by the police.”

The complainant who became suspicious of the event that unfolded reported the matter to the Accra Regional Command, leading to the arrest of the accused persons.

“The accused persons arranged with 3 police officers, who were their friends, to seize the fake chemicals from the complainant to avoid detection,” the court was told.

The accused persons in their caution statements are said to have admitted to the whole event as being a scam and made a promise of refunding the amount but failed to do so.

Whiles Owen and Evans are facing charges of conspiring to commit a crime and defrauding by false pretenses, the three police officers involved in the matter have been interdicted with formal proceedings instituted against them for their conduct.

  • GFA suspends Techiman City from all activities until next Congress

The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in the exercise of its powers under Article 39(n) of the GFA Statutes 2019 has suspended Techiman City Football Club provisionally until the next Congress of the GFA for violating the Statutes of the Association.

Article 39(n) of the GFA Statutes 2019 states as follows: â€œThe Executive Council shall have the following powers: Dismiss a member of a body of GFA provisionally or suspend a Member of GFA provisionally until the next Congress”.

Techiman City Football Club on Friday, August 28, 2020, issued a Writ against the GFA and filed an Ex-parte Motion against the GFA to place an interlocutory injunction on the recently held 26th Ordinary Congress of the Ghana Football Association.

It is very clear from the admission requirements under Article 13 and 16(1)(f) of the GFA Statutes 2019 that a member of the GFA will not take matters of interpretation and application of the FIFA, CAF and GFA Statutes, Regulations, decisions and directives to the ordinary courts, unless the FIFA Statutes or regulations, CAF Statutes or the GFA regulations, or binding national law, provide for a stipulate recourse to Ordinary courts.

Where there are violations, Article 17.1 of the GFA Statues 2019 states that “the Congress is responsible for suspending a Member. The Executive Council may, however, temporarily suspend a Member that seriously and/or repeatedly violates its obligations as a Member with immediate effect. The suspension approved by the Executive Council shall last until the next Congress, unless the Executive Council has lifted it in the meantime”.

Following this decision of the Executive Council, Techiman City Football Club is suspended from all GFA activities including the upcoming 2020/2021 football season until the next GFA Congress decides the fate of the club as prescribed under Article 17 and 18 of the GFA Statutes.

Article 17(3) of the GFA Statutes states that “a suspended Member shall lose its membership rights. Other Members may not entertain sporting contact with a suspended Member. The Disciplinary Committee may impose further sanctions”.

Consequently, Techiman City FC is provisionally suspended from the Ghana Football Association until the next GFA Congress, where the delegates will be presented with the matter on the agenda for Congress to take a decision on the issue in accordance with the Statutes of the Association.

C.K. Akonnor, who is now the head coach of the senior national team, has maintained Andre Dede Ayew as the captain of the team with Thomas Partey and Richard Ofori as deputy captains.

This has called for doubts on the future of Gyan in the Black Stars.

Reacting to the new captaincy structure of the Black Stars, Manso said, “The time is up for Gyan to retire because players like Essien and others have retired.”

“He should not challenge the body again so the country can bid him a farewell” he told West FM.

Asamoah Gyan is the all-time top scorer for Ghana with 51 goals.

  • GAA to organize national championship before the end of the year General Secretary

Bawa Fuseini, General Secretary of the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) has said that his outfit hopes to organise at least one national championship before the close of the year.

He said the athletes had been training individually even during the COVID-19 and lockdown and were ready to perform when given the opportunity, hence their decision to stage one event for them.

According to the General Secretary, the championship was aimed at giving the athletes at least one platform to shake off the boredom.

“Had it not been the spread on COVID-19 which derailed their programmes and caused major international events including the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games to be postponed to next year, we would have organised a lot of championships,” he added.

According to Mr. Fuseini, both local and foreign-based Ghanaian athletes were waiting for the lift of the ban on contact and outdoor sports so they can commence preparations.

Mr. Fuseini said the GAA was patiently waiting on the health authorities for advise to come up with their programme.

He noted that very soon the international body will announce dates for qualifiers for the Olympic Games and other championships.

  • COVID pushes New Zealand into worst recession in years

New Zealand is in its deepest recession in decades, following strict measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic which were widely praised.

The country’s GDP shrank by 12.2% between April and June as the lockdown and border closures hit.

It is New Zealand’s first recession since the global financial crisis and its worst since 1987, when the current system of measurement began.

But the government hopes its pandemic response will lead to a quick recovery.

The nation of nearly five million was briefly declared virus free, and although it still has a handful of cases, it has only had 25 deaths.

The economy is likely to be a key issue in next month’s election, which was delayed after an unexpected spike in Covid-19 cases in August.

Stats NZ spokesman, Paul Pascoe said the measures implemented since 19 March have had a huge impact of some sectors of the economy.

“Industries like retail, accommodation and restaurants, and transport saw significant declines in production because they were most directly affected by the international travel ban and strict nationwide lockdown,” he said.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s government has said the success in suppressing the virus is likely to help recovery prospects.

Finance Minister, Grant Robertson, said the GDP numbers were better than expected, and suggested a strong recovery ahead.

“Going hard and early means that we can come back faster and stronger,” he said.

Some economists are also predicting a swift recovery, because of New Zealand’s strong response to the virus.

“We expect the June quarter’s record-breaking GDP decline to be followed by a record-breaking rise in the September quarter,” said Westpac Senior Economist Michael Gordon.

Ms. Ardern said she backs the economy’s ability to rebound.

“I think one of the key questions here is not just about what’s happened over that June quarter in terms of the effect of lockdown. It’s actually about the rebound – and I back New Zealand’s rebound,” she said.

She said activity is already picking up as the country has been able to open up a lot more quickly compared with other nations.

“Even with some of the more recent restrictions, we’ve seen a return to activity, whereas compared to Australia we are in a much better position,” she added.

However, Treasury forecasts released yesterday suggested massive debt and continuing disruptions are likely to delay a full recovery.

The opposition National party accused the government of a lack of pragmatism that made the impact worse than it needed to be.

New Zealand recorded a steeper drop than neighbouring Australia, where the lockdown was less severe.

But the state of Victoria has faced a second lockdown, which is likely to weigh on Australia’s economic recovery.

  • Top US law official slammed for comparing lockdown to ‘slavery’

US Attorney General William Barr, a top Trump appointee and the highest ranking US law enforcement official, has drawn fire for comparing Covid-19 lockdown orders to the historical US enslavement of black people.

“You know, putting a national lockdown, stay at home orders, is like house arrest. Other than slavery, which was a different kind of restraint, this is the greatest intrusion on civil liberties in American history,” he told a college in Michigan on Wednesday.

In a CNN interview, Democratic Congressman James Clyburn – the highest-ranked African-American in the House of Representatives – slammed the remark as “the most ridiculous, tone-deaf, God-awful thing I’ve ever heard”.

“It is incredible that the chief law enforcement officer in this country would equate human bondage to expert advice to save lives. Slavery was not about saving lives, it was about devaluing lives.” He pointed out that the federal government never instituted a lockdown, and they were instead ordered by the states.

Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, who is also black, took issue with Barr’s description of slavery as a form of “restraint,” telling CNN it was actually “one of the worst crimes against humanity ever committed”.

  • Over 400 United Steel workers laid off after shutdown over air pollution

Over 400 workers at United Steel Company, a steel manufacturing firm within the free zones enclave at Tema, have been laid off following the shutdown of the company by the government.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ordered the closure of the facility due to its failure to adhere to a directive by the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology to find ways of addressing air pollution from its activities.

Speaking to journalists during a tour of the facility by the EPA, the Executive Director, Henry Kwabena Kokofu said despite the economic benefits derived from the operation of the factory, it will remain closed until management fixes its pollution challenges.

“400 workers sitting at home is not a pleasant situation. As much as we want our young men and women to work, as much as we want the needed revenue to come in the form of taxes and all that, we cannot compromise on the integrity of the environment. Pollution and all others, we know the consequences that they bring, so we will work within the law.”

The EPA gave the firm till January 31, 2020, to fix air pollutant systems to reduce pollution in the atmosphere.

A visit to the manufacturing site by officials of the EPA and some National Security operatives showed that the company had not met the deadline, leading to its closure.

The World Health Organisation has estimated that air pollution from all sources caused about 28,000 deaths in 2016.

According to WHO, outdoor pollution caused 2,000 deaths in 2017.

  • Botswana allows wives to own land

Botswana wives can for the first time own land alongside their husbands, President Mokgweetsi Masisi has said.

Until now, the country’s land policy stopped wives from owning land if their husbands already had some.

Only unmarried women or the wives of men who did not already own land were eligible.

The discrimination left millions of women without access to the land where they live and work.

The president tweeted the amended law that reads: “Each Motswana will be eligible for allocation of one residential plot at an area of their choice within the country, on both state land and tribal land.”

He said the new policy will also protect widows and orphans who head households and are in need of land for residential purposes.
