  • Budget Consultant urges CSOs to track budgetary allocations to fisheries sector

A Budget Consultant, Mr Benjamin Arthur has asked Civil Society Organizations (CSOs)in the Fisheries sector to track government’s annual budgetary allocations to the sector especially at the decentralized level.

This, according to him, would enable them to monitor the actual percentage of the budget statement that went to the sector annually.

Mr Arthur reminded the CSOs to be in constant touch with policy makers such as Members of Parliament (MPs), Ministers, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives(MMDCEs) to make inputs into the budget statement.

Mr Arthur was speaking at the opening of a-two-day Far Ban Bo (Protecting Fisheries Livelihoods) tracking workshop for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the Fisheries sector in Accra.

It was organized by the Far Ban Bo project funded by the European Union(EU) and being implemented by Care, Oxfam and Friends of the Nation.

The workshop aimed at training CSOs and fishers in budget analysis and public expenditure tracking for budget advocacy in the Fisheries sector.

Mr. Arthur who took participants through the four(4) stages of preparation and calculation of percentage of the budget at the local level, stressed the need for evidence-based budget advocacy to influence decision-making to be catered for in the national budget.

The Budget Consultant entreated CSOs and fishers to impress upon MPs, Ministers and MMDCEs to forward their concerns to cabinet meetings for their inputs to engage the attention of government.

He reminded them that engagement on the budget preparation started from July to August, so they could engage the Ministers, MPs, and MMDCEs to channel their inputs.

Mr. Arthur asked the CSOs and fishers to dialogue with the DAs to chart a common path on how to make inputs into the budget and push for adequate percentage for the Fisheries sector.

He observed that the budget allocation at the district level does not serve the needs of the fisher folks.

Mr. Arthur intimated that the Fisheries Industry contributed meaningfully to the country’s Gross Domestic Product(GDP) hence there was the need for the government to increase the budgetary allocations to the sector.

He called on all stakeholders in the fishing industry to forge ahead in unity to fight for a sustainable budget to make the fishing industry more viable.

Earlier in an opening statement, the Project Manager of Care International, Mr. Kwame Mensah said budgetary allocations to the Fisheries sector had not been stable, adding that it was difficult to track budget for the fisheries sector unlike other sectors.

He said over the past 12 years, the Water and Sanitation sector was able to track their budget and experts wanted to use it to track the Fisheries sector.

Mr Mensah said the Far Ban Bo partners would educate fishers and other stakeholders at the Regional and District levels on effective tracking of the budget to the Fisheries sector at the decentralized level.

  • Ga East MCE warns encroachers on waterways as assembly begins demolition exercise to avert flooding

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Ga East Municipal Assembly (GEMA), Abokobi Hon. Janet Tulasi Mensah, has yet again issued a stern warning to encroachers of waterways in the municipality. The MCE said this in an interview with the media at a demolition exercise at Dome Parakou, Paradise-Riverside.

The Assembly on Wednesday, 29th and Thursday, 30th moved to pull down structures near the Onyasea River which divides the Ga East Municipality and the Okaikwei North Municipality, following growing concerns by residents on the spate of flooding in the area with a little rainfall.

The Assembly, determined to clamp down on recalcitrant and deviant developers who build on waterways and places designated as roads and for public use without recourse to the necessary, required procedures by the Assembly, embarked on the exercise to send the right signal.

The demolition exercise, was not only meant to address the perennial flooding in the Dome Parakou Paradise-Riverside area, but also formed part of the Assembly’s plans towards safeguarding the sanctity and serenity of the water bodies and climate change agenda.

On Wednesday morning, an excavator, hired through the efforts of the Paradise-Riverside Residents’ Association, with support from the Assembly, razed down buildings identified to have encroached on the waterways and buffers of the Onyasea River.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Janet Tulasi Mensah, who was personally on site for the demolition exercise observed that indiscriminate building is a major cause of flooding in the municipality and wondered why people would spend their hard-earned money putting up structures at unauthorised places only to be demolished and encouraged them to seek the right permits.

“Our actions and inactions have diverse effects on us as a people. We see that a place is waterlogged or waterway but because we have money, we fill such places and build on it and at the end of the day it comes back to affect the whole community. I’m appealing to all prospective developers to approach the Assembly and obtain the necessary permits before embarking on any project in the municipality”, she said.

She further bemoaned the habit of some people in diverting natural waterways to suit their parochial interests and stated that the Assembly is moving to deal with such offenders.

“I believe we all understand that building on waterways causes flooding. The Assembly has the mandate to pull down such structures and I’m therefore using this opportunity to caution us all to desist from such practices in order not to make us resort to demolition”, she stated.

The Municipal Works Engineer (MWE), Peter Bah-Lano, who supervised the exercise, alongside his colleague, the Municipal Urban Roads Engineer (MURE), Aboagye Foster, recounted the flooding situation in the area and said he was hopeful that the action will send the right signal to developers who undertake projects without consulting the Assembly for the required permits.

“Every year, when it rains it affects people living here badly. The Onyasea River passes here and people have encroached on the buffer and this impedes the flow of water into it. Through state-citizens participation in governance, the Association made contributions and we collaborated to undertake this exercise”,

The MWE expressed gratitude to the Residents’ Association for teaming up with the Assembly to carry out such action and called on the other RAs, individuals and corporate bodies to follow suit to help curb the numerous developmental menaces in the municipality.

“We know the problems in the various communities but the Assembly hasn’t got the funds to tackle all so I’m appealing to the other Residents’ Associations to mobilise themselves and and support us to address the challenges facing them. We know Associations such as the South East Haatso, South Kwabenya, Ashongman Estate and Pure Water, among others, are all doing their best in this regard so we are calling on the others to follow suit”, the MWE requested.

An executive member of the Dome Parakou Paradise-Riverside Residents’ Association, Mr. Ernest Appiah, who was at the site of the demolition exercise together with Mr. Kofi Appiadu and other members, expressed his and the Association’s joy at and commendations for the action taken by the Assembly.

“Those of us who live here suffer a lot from flooding whenever it rains. We came mobilised ourselves as an Association and submitted our request to the Assembly and the result is what we’re witnessing. The Assembly coming in to do this exercise brings us a lot of joy and we’re grateful to them”, he said.

Similar exercise is expected to be carried out in the parts of the municipality where developers have encroached on waterways and public places.

The Assembly has already commenced due diligence to complete the necessary legal processes on other structures earmarked for demolition in the area.

According to him, the healthcare plan will cover persons who seek healthcare services at the district level and lower.

“We have just taken $100 million under COVID. We have taken another $1 billion as a loan. You mean as a country, we can’t find an extra $18 million to give free healthcare from district hospitals and below?” he queried.

John Mahama unveiling his running mate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, said the healthcare plan will be implemented to ensure that both the young and elderly have free primary healthcare.

Nigeria is Africa’s third most impacted behind only South Africa and Egypt. The federal and state governments are working to increase testing as authorities stress that cases definitely far exceed the current tally with less than 300,000 people tested so far.

Nigeria has tested almost 280,000 of its 200 million population.

The country continues to record hundreds of new COVID-19 cases daily but has also had to reopen its economy as authorities seek to balance health needs with the economic needs of the populace. Schools are being reopened gradually, domestic flights have resumed, while markets and religious centres are also gradually being reopened.

  • ‘Nothing to live on’ – trying to hold on as pandemic guts tourism

With no American visitors to show around the D-Day beaches or the Loire Valley’s chateaux, and no work on the immediate horizon, Paris tour guide Linda Zenou frets about how she will pay off a loan and continue to care for her ailing mother in the achingly lean months ahead.

“My situation is going to become completely inextricable,” she said. “We have nothing to live on.”

For growing numbers of businesses and individuals who depend on the global tourism industry, the question is not so much when the coronavirus pandemic will end but how and if they will survive until business picks up. In trying to fend off the virus, countries that put up entry barriers to tourists have done so at a mounting cost to themselves and others.

“It’s now survival of the fittest,” said Johann Krige, CEO of the Kanonkop wine estate in South Africa, where the drying up of wine-tasting tourists threatens dozens of wine farms around the historic town of Stellenbosch, near Cape Town.

“A lot of them are going to go under because they just don’t have sufficient cash flow,” Krige said.

Around the world, travel amid the pandemic is becoming a story of tentative steps forward in some places, but punishing steps back elsewhere, of “yes” to letting back visitors from places faring somewhat better against COVID-19 but not from others where outbreaks are flaring.

The result is an ever-evolving global mishmash of restrictions and quarantines, all of which are providing zero long-term visibility for businesses trying to make payrolls and for everyone in the industry from trinket sellers to luxury hotels.

In Australia, the government of Queensland, home to the Great Barrier Reef, barred visitors from Sydney starting Saturday because of a growing outbreak in the country’s largest city. Queensland tourism official Brett Kapernick predicted that could cost some businesses a 40 percent plunge in revenue.

“With this pandemic, the situation becomes fluid and therefore evolves weekly,” Kapernick said. “A week ago, we didn’t think we’d be facing a border closed to Sydney.”

While the Indonesian resort island of Bali tentatively opened up to domestic visitors on Friday, the beaches of Da Nang in Vietnam were deserted. The city locked down Tuesday to contain a cluster of nearly 100 cases.

Shorn of tourism’s lifeblood, some businesses already look doomed. Many of the luxury hotels in Rome’s historic centre did not reopen in the late spring when Italy started allowing arrivals from elsewhere in the European Union and other select nations. Early in the pandemic, Italians who for years worked as dining room staff, cooks or maids at hotels instead sought farm work, picking fruits and vegetables.

On Portugal’s Algarve coast, individual catastrophes also loom for the staffs of empty hotels, bars and restaurants which are losing hope that tourists will return quickly enough to keep them afloat. In a region almost entirely reliant on tourism, the unemployment rate has already jumped 230 percent.

And in Oxford, England, tour operator Frederick Laurie is clinging to British “staycationers”, optimistically describing them as “green shoots” in an otherwise bleak year. He concedes that their numbers will never make up for the ruinous plunge in foreign visitors who once thronged the university town before the coronavirus chased them away.

“It’s an extremely difficult time for us,” he says. His decade-old company, Footprints Tours, has seen revenues collapse by 70 percent.

Losses globally are counted in the billions. Percentage drops in visitor numbers are often double-digits. Tourism income in South Africa was down 98 percent in May compared with the same month last year, the Tourism Business Council says, and more than half a million jobs in its sector are at risk.

Governments in countries heavily reliant on tourism are trying to use bailouts to keep businesses afloat. Thailand’s cabinet this week approved projects worth more than $700m for the tourism industry. Bulgaria is offering tax breaks and job subsidies to shore up its tourism sector bracing for huge cuts in its workforce of 290,000. Hotel owners lament that they have more employees than patrons at Bulgaria’s biggest sea resort, Sunny Beach.

The bright spots are few and far between. Among them: Locals who are unable or reluctant to travel are rediscovering attractions where foreign tourists used to jostle for elbow space.

Animals have South Africa’s world-famous wildlife parks largely to themselves because of lockdown rules that barred international tourists and made it illegal for South Africans to travel between provinces for vacations. At the Kruger National Park, lions sleep undisturbed in the roads and roam around empty lodges.

At the Louvre Museum in Paris, it is now possible to calmly contemplate the works. That is a rare treat for Parisians but a nightmare for tour guides, who gathered in protest again this week, dressed in black and wearing masks, to demand more financial help. Among them was Janice Baneux, who was decidedly pessimistic for their future.

“Some people had to sell their homes, returning to their parents and waiting until next year when tourism will probably be back again,” she said. “But this year there is no hope.”

  • UG considering off-campus private residential facilities for Free SHS graduates Vice-Chancellor

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana is concerned about the ability of the institution to accommodate the influx of graduates from the Free SHS programme.

Prof Ebenezer Oduro Owusu said due to financial constraints, it is difficult for the university to expand its residential facilities.

Addressing the University of Ghana Maiden Virtual Congregation Ceremony, Prof Owusu said management is considering innovative ways to address the housing deficit on its Legon campus.

“The University for some time now, decoupled admission from accommodation due to financial obligations. This financial obligations and judgement debt, truly have affected our capacity to undertake further investments to augment the housing stock” VC said.

For some years now, fresh students have to fight for the limited space on the main campus with others having to forfeit their admission due to financial challenges in securing a room at a private hostel.

”To address the accommodation challenge which will be posed by the influx of the first cohort of graduates from the Free SHS policy, management is considering various approaches including an off-campus arrangement to identify suitable private residential facilities and recommend same for interested students” Prof Owusu indicated.

A total of 375,737 candidates are currently writing the WASSCE and will be struggling for the limited space in the various public universities in September 2020.

The Chancellor of the University, Mary Chinery-Hesse also said the management is working towards receiving the first of graduates from the Free SHS programme.

She indicated that the institution is improving its infrastructure to offer a multidimensional approach to learning.

”The University is preparing to receive the products of the first batch of the Free SHS Programme. The innovations thrust upon us by COVID-19 have afforded us the opportunity to explore both conventional and non-conventional ways of opening up access to higher education to these prospective students”

Madam Chinery-Hesse also added ”As the university works to complete the physical infrastructure to receive these students; we are also improving our IT infrastructure to strengthen our ability to offer a blended approach to teaching and learning.”

The virtual graduation held on July 30, 2020, saw 133 students having their academic toils crowned.

Eighty-eight of this figure graduated with Bachelor of Law Degrees whiles the remaining 45 passed out with either Bachelor of Medicine or Bachelor of Dentistry Degrees.

In all, the University of Ghana will hold congregation for 14,295 students, comprising 964 students in the non-degree programmes, 8,236 undergraduates, 4,668 postgraduate students and 427 PhD students, with 6,807 being females and 7,488 being males.

  • Coronavirus: South Africa virus cases pass half million mark

More than half million Coronavirus have been confirmed in South Africa, according to the country’s health minister.

Zwelini Mkhize announced 10,107 new cases on Saturday, bringing the tally to 503,290, along with 8,153 deaths.

South Africa is the hardest-hit country on the continent and accounts for half of all reported infections in Africa.

It also has the fifth-highest number of cases in the world after the US, Brazil, Russia and India.

Researchers have said the true number of deaths in the country may be far higher.

South African health authorities have said the rate of infection is increasing rapidly, with cases currently concentrated around the capital, Pretoria.

More than a third of all infections have been reported in Gauteng – South Africa’s financial hub, and a province that has quickly become the epicentre of the national outbreak.

Infections are not expected to peak for another month.

South Africa imposed a strict lockdown in April and May that slowed the spread of the Coronavirus.

It began a gradual reopening in June but restrictions – including a ban on alcohol sales – were reintroduced last month as infection rates began to rise again. A state of emergency is also in force until 15 August.

The influx of patients has put an incredible strain on South Africa’s hospitals, and a BBC investigation found an array of systematic failures that had exhausted healthcare professionals and brought the health service near to collapse.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said last month that 28,000 hospital beds had been made available for COVID-19 patients but the country still faced a “serious” shortage of doctors and nurses.

Last week the World Health Organization warned that South Africa’s experience was a likely a precursor to what would happen across the rest of the continent.

  • Kenya Airways pilots plead with Kenyatta to save their jobs

Pilots are seeking the intervention of President Uhuru Kenyatta to save their jobs as struggling Kenya Airways (KQ) pushes on with the resolve to send them home.

Through their union, Kenya Airline Pilots Association (Kalpa), they wrote an open letter to the President pleading with him to save some 4,000 families who would be directly affected by the downsizing.

“As opposed to issuing letters of redundancy in the midst of a pandemic – a move that will severely impact over 4,000 families who directly depend on KQ and the adverse net effect of the same, industry stakeholders have the opportunity to consultatively reposition the airline to strategically fill the gap left by the closure of Air Mauritius and South Africa Airways,” the letter signed by Kalpa General Secretary, Captain Murithi Nyagah, stated.

    Expand network

They opposed any move by the airline to reduce staff, instead urging for measures to expand its network and preserve Nairobi as an economic hub for the East African region.

“We strongly believe expanding Kenya Airways will give our country the opportunity to capitalise on the maturity of her hospitality industry and fully utilise her substantive investment in airport infrastructure,” they said.

The pilots further cautioned over the risk of the country losing its professionals in the aviation sector to competitors in the region, faulting KQ for the move as other airlines are making decisions to strengthen their brands.

    Downsize

“The decision to downsize the airline will result in the country losing its highly-trained home-grown talent to foreign carriers, as well as its regional advantage as a hub to Addis Ababa – that is expanding under the support of Ethiopian Airlines, or Kigali – that is also expanding under the support of RwandAir.”

Kenya Airways top management has, however, termed its decision as “right-sizing” the organisation so as to ensure that the airline operates cost-effectively.

  • Rwanda uses robots to fight against coronavirus

One of the challenges being faced worldwide is the rate of infection of health professionals while treating COVID-19 patients. 2016 statistics show the following picture of Rwanda’s health sector: 1/50,505 ground ambulance/population ratio; 1/10,055 Doctor/population ratio; 1/1,094 Nurse/population ratio; 1/10,500 Laboratory technicians/population ratio.

Although Rwanda is on track to meeting most of the required quota, the country cannot afford the set back that a pandemic like COVID-19 among health professionals would cause.

To minimize contact time with confirmed cases and therefore reducing the risk of contamination of health professionals in COVID-19 treatment centres, robots were deployed. At Gatenga and Kanyinya treatment centres in Kigali City, visits by medical staff to patients went from 3-4 to 2 per day since May 2020.

The 5 human-size robots are programmed to perform temperature screening, take readings of vitals, deliver video messages and detect people not wearing masks then instruct them to wear masks properly.

On Tuesday, May 19 at the Kanyinya COVID-19 Treatment Centre, the 5 robots were launched by the Ministry of Health. Named in Kinyarwanda, Akazuba, Ikirezi, Mwiza, Ngabo, and Urumuri are made by Zora Bots, a Belgian company specialised in robotics. They were acquired through a partnership between the UNDP Rwanda Accelerator Lab (AccLab) and the Ministry of ICT and Innovation. Each robot costs about $30,000.

Urumuri is currently deployed at the Kigali International Airport with the capacity to screen 50 to 150 people per minute and report abnormalities to officers on duty.

As Rwanda is reopening Kigali International Airport for commercial international flights from 1st of August, Urumuri will allow to speed up mass screenings of fever for passengers as they land.

Smart anti-epidemic robots have been used in Asia to help flatten the COVID-19 curve. The pandemic has proven to be a crosscutting challenge affecting Rwanda in all sectors (Health, Economy, Education, Agriculture, …). It therefore requires different sometimes innovative solutions with available resources like robots.

  • Tsitsi Dangarembga: Booker Prize nominee arrested in Zimbabwe

Award-winning Zimbabwean author Tsitsi Dangarembga, a nominee for this year’s Booker Prize, has been arrested in the country’s capital, Harare, during an anti-government protest.

Dangarembga, 61, and another protester were bundled into a police lorry while carrying placards.

The government has warned that participation in Friday’s demonstration is regarded as insurrection.

Police and soldiers are patrolling cities where streets are mainly empty.

Opposition parties and civil society organisations had called for protests against alleged government corruption and a deepening economic crisis with inflation running at more than 700%.

But President Emmerson Mnangagwa has accused the opposition of exploiting the country’s economic challenges to topple his government.

Media captionZimbabwe was largely shut down on the day meant for demonstrations against corruption and economic hardships.

An opposition politician who called for the demonstration is in detention, arrested last week and charged with inciting violence.

He remains behind bars, along with prominent investigative journalist Hopewell Chin’ono, who was detained at the same time.

In June Chin’ono had exposed an alleged multi-million dollar scandal involving coronavirus supplies – revelations which led to the sacking of the health minister.

  • Thomas Partey is the right man for Arsenal – Kenyan international Okoth

Kenya and Sofapaka striker Ronald Okoth believes Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey is the right player for Arsenal this summer.

The 27-year-old enjoyed his best season in La Liga with Atlético Madrid making 35 appearances and scoring three goals.

The Gunners are still looking for a talismanic figure to fill their engine room and have been heavily linked to the Black Stars talisman who reportedly has a release clause of €50million (£43.5m).

According to Okoth, Partey’s signing will prove a worthy deal for the London side.

“I surely think he [Thomas] Partey is the right man for Arsenal because if you analyse the club now, it really requires an engine like Partey,” Okoth told Goal.

“If at all they [Arsenal and Partey] would come to an agreement, it is going to be the best signing made by Arsenal. Looking at the kind of defensive woes and all that, I think Partey is a man to bring some kind of stability across the board.

“He can help cushion the back four and join the attacks when there is a need to but his greatest strength, as I know, is creating the best link between the defence and the forward line.

“Partey will provide the much-needed cover that Arsenal have been lacking for quite some time.

“It will be the best signing in my view.”

He added, “[Matteo] Guendouzi is young and a hard-working lad, and when he plays one finds it hard to believe he is still very young.”

“If he continues putting the same work rate week in week out in a season, then I have no doubt that he has a bright future.

“He is definitely going to be among the best mid

“I will not call it a challenge [Guendouzi vs Partey possible rivalry] as such, but I would prefer to say that it would be a healthy competition. It will bring the needed fighting spirit among the players and end laxity.

“Whenever you get another quality player joining, that is always a plus because he will push you beyond your limit.

“In that process, one gets to unleash his own best side. It is the same thing we are seeing Chelsea doing; signing strikers when the likes of Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham are still there.”

  • Police arrest two TV station managers for promoting fraudsters

The Cyber Crime Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested the general managers of Accra-based free-to-air (FTA) television stations, AB TV and Amen TV, for promoting the activities of fraudsters on their TV stations.

The police arrested the managers in an operation aimed at clamping down on persons behind advertisements on television stations who are engaged in money doubling and fraud.

The Cyber Crime Unit said the suspects would be charged and arraigned for promoting charlatanic advertisements “because these are adverts they knew at the time of promoting that what the adverts purported to do was not true.”

According to the police, preliminary investigation showed that the suspects used their free-to-air channels to allow placement of advertisement of nefarious activities in the media and the suspected fraudsters end up duping unsuspecting people who either send money to the fraudsters through mobile money transfers or meet them personally at agreed locations to present the cash.

The Director of the Cyber Crime Unit of the CID, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Dr. Gustav Herbert Yankson, told the Daily Graphic that the Unit had observed that there were many television stations promoting the services of such fraudsters, while the police had received numerous complaints against the fraud and extortions of the ‘money doublers’.

“A number of fraudsters have succeeded in duping their victims under the guise of doubling monies for them,” he said.

He stated that for the first phase of the operation, “we have started with the television stations which advertise or have programmes that promote the activities of these fraudsters who claim they can double the money but end up duping people.”

Dr. Yankson said: “They claim they are able to hack into systems of some international money transfer services and multiply the money they receive from people. For example, they claim within five minutes, anyone who sends a minimum amount of GH¢100 will get CH¢1,000 in return and if they send GH¢200 they will get GH¢2,000 and it goes on and on.”

He added that the police suspected several persons might have fallen victim to the nefarious activities of the suspects and urged the public to volunteer information.

  • Zimbabwean soldiers assault 18-year-old, demand bribe to stop attack

Three armed soldiers Friday forced their way into a family home in Highfields, Harare and heavily assaulted an 18-year-old male before forcefully taking US$12 and $50 from him as a bribe to stop the beatings NewZimbabwe.com has learnt.

Tadiwa Gwatidzo said Friday his assailants were part of State security agents deployed to maintain peace in anticipation of a national anti-corruption demonstration the same day.

Gwatidzo said when the soldiers came Friday, it was still in the early and he was still asleep when three soldiers kicked open his bedroom door after failing to catch two unidentified men they were chasing.

“They started beating me up with a steel rod all over the body as demanding to know how much I had so that they stop the beatings,” narrated.

“I had US$12 and $50 on me which I put on the floor, which they quickly grabbed and forced me out of my room. All this time, they were beating me until we reached their truck and they left me,” said an emotional Gwatidzo who stays with an aunt in Highfields’ Western Triangle area.

He suffered bruises all over his body.

“If I could bewitch them, I would. I want revenge. There is no law that allows anyone to just get into people’s homes like that and beat them up. If only I had the power to also beat them up I would. It was pure evil by people who are as old as my father.

NewZimbabwe.com arrived at the family residence while neighbours were still consoling Gwatidzo.

“They beat him up for no reason. I am worried because the government said we must stay at home but now they are coming into our homes and beating us up,” said Nyaradzo Mandudzo, Gwatidzo’s aunt.

“The money taken from him was his grandmother’s, instead of depending on the army for protection they have turned into our enemies and we do not even know where to flee to.”

  • Lagos to reopen Mosques, Churches from Aug 7

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has announced that places of worship (Mosques and Churches) in the state will be reopened from Friday, August 7.

Sanwo-Olu disclosed this during a briefing on COVID-19 at the Lagos House in Marina area of the state.

While mosques will be reopened next week Friday, the governor said churches will follow suit on Sunday, August 9.

According to him, religious leaders must make available hand sanitisers, handheld thermometer checks, adding that the state government will ensure that social distancing is maintained.

“Places of worship in Lagos will now be opened from Friday, August 7 for our Muslim worshippers and on Sunday, August 9 for our Christian worshippers.

“We will only be allowing 50 per cent of their capacity at either the church or the mosque. Churches that have Saturday worship day will also be allowed to start holding their Saturday worship.

“We must reiterate that places of worship are only permitted to have their regular once a week service on designated days.

For the avoidance of doubt, there will be Friday worship for our Muslim followers and Sunday worship for our Christian followers,” he said.

“In addition, the following conditions must also be fully met by all our religious centres; regular gatherings are permitted to hold but vigils and other services should still be on hold for now.

“We recommend and seriously appeal to our senior citizens if you are aged 65 and above, you are still strongly advised not to attend these places of worship. Please stay back at home.”

Sanwo-Olu advised religious leaders to consider holding services in open spaces and well-ventilated areas “as circumstances of faith and tradition permit”.

“We should still ensure that no face masks policy are maintained throughout the duration of the services. They should ensure that regular cleaning and disinfection of the facilities are carried out to maintain a clean and hygiene environment before, during and after the services.

“It is mandatory to provide handwashing facilities and hand sanitisers at the various worship places. Handshakes, hugs, high-fives are not permitted during gatherings and should be emphasised and displayed at the various places of worship,” he added.

  • Global air travel won’t recover till 2024 – IATA

Global air travel won’t recover from the COVID-19 crisis until 2024, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced Tuesday.

That’s a year later than the airline body’s previous projection.

The body, which represents 290 airlines, blamed the sluggish recovery on a number of factors, including a lack of consumer confidence, the decline in business travel, and fresh coronavirus spikes in the United States and elsewhere.

The revised baseline forecast is that international passenger traffic will drop 55% in 2020, compared to 2019. Back in April, the IATA had predicted the drop to be just 46%.

Passenger numbers are expected to rise 62% next year, but will still be down almost 30% compared to pre-COVID times, with a full recovery to pre-pandemic levels not on the cards until four years from now.

“Passenger traffic hit bottom in April, but the strength of the upturn has been very weak,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s director general and CEO in a statement. “What improvement we have seen has been domestic flying.”

Unsurprisingly, short-haul travel is expected to recover faster than long-haul — due to passenger comfort levels, but also because international markets remain largely closed.

“Consumer confidence is depressed and not helped by the UK’s weekend decision to impose a blanket quarantine on all travelers returning from Spain,” said de Juniac.

The British government made a surprise U-turn on its UK-Spain travel corridor on Saturday, reinstating with immediate effect its 14-day quarantine for all travelers arriving from the popular tourist destination, following a rise in coronavirus cases in the country.

Many British holidaymakers — who’d jetted off shortly after schools broke up for summer — were caught out by the decision. British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab defended the move, telling Sky News that it “took the decision as swiftly as we could, and we can’t apologize for doing so.”

In terms of countries’ domestic traffic, China’s airlines are leading the recovery, with traffic down 35.5% in June compared to the 2019 period, up from a 46.3% decline in May.

The IATA says that scientific advances in fighting Covid-19, including the development of a successful vaccine, could allow for a speedier recovery. But for now, the future is looking bleak.

“In many parts of the world infections are still rising,” said IATA’s de Juniac. “All of this points to a longer recovery period and more pain for the industry and the global economy.”

With airlines struggling financially, governments will need to continue relief measures to stop carriers going under, said the airline body.

“Summer — our industry’s busiest season — is passing by rapidly,” said de Juniac. He said that there was “little chance for an upswing in international air travel unless governments move quickly and decisively to find alternatives to border closures, confidence-destroying stop-start re-openings and demand-killing quarantine.”

  • Ghana ace Andre Ayew attracts interests from the Middle East

Ghana captain Andre Ayew is attracting interest from the Middle East after a remarkable campaign with Swansea City this season.

The Swansea City vice captain’s hopes of helping the club return to the English topflight came to a crashing end after suffer a semi final play-offs defeat to Brentford.

Ayew enjoyed a very good campaign with the Welsh club, scoring 18 goals in all competitions and providing seven assists.

His future with Swansea remains uncertain, despite having a year left on his contract.

The 30-year old is believed to be interested in top-flight football, with manager Steve Cooper admitting his level is beyond the championship.

“We have seen the real level of player he is this year, with the goals he has scored and the impact he has had on and off the pitch. It’s been brilliant to work with him,”says Cooper.

“But I understand Andre is a better player than the Championship. That’s a matter of fact and I am sure he will have offers to do that.”

Meanwhile, clubs from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are ready to offer huge sums of money for the Ghanaian.

“I understand that it’ll be a talking point, whether he stays or goes,” Cooper added.

“Whatever Andre decides to do, he will have thought about it long and hard about it, that’s for sure, and we’ll see where it goes.”

Ghanaian forward Emmanuel Gyasi’s dream of leading Spezia Calcio to serie A is on course after helping the Eagles to a promotion play-offs spot at the end of the regular serie B season.

  • Kotoko has the materials to play in Africa – Michael Akuffo

Former Asante Kotoko midfielder, Michael Akuffo has said that the club has the materials to play in the Caf Champions League next season.

The Porcupine Warriors will represent Ghana in the CAF Champions League after the Coronavirus outbreak forced the cancellation of the 2019/2020 domestic football.

With many calling on the club to pull out from the competition, Akuffo beleives the club has enough quality to compete in Africa next season.

“It is highly possible Kotoko can represent Ghana in Caf Champions League looking at the players and the pedigree of Maxwell Konadu.”

“Konadu was the coach that led us to win the Ghana Premier League in 2012 and he has a lot of technical qualities.

“It is a matter of psyching the players and they also believe in themselves that the Caf Champions League is not beyond our reach.

“Every generation has its kind of players and the current squad is made of some quality ones so Kotoko can play well in Africa.”

“The players must give their best so ensure Kotoko is represented well in Africa,” Akuffo told Akoma FM.

  • Republicans to Trump: You can’t delay 2020 election

Top Republicans have rejected President Donald Trump’s suggestion that November’s presidential election should be delayed over alleged fraud concerns.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy both dismissed the idea.

Mr Trump does not have the authority to postpone the election, as any delay would have to be approved by Congress.

Earlier, the president suggested that increased postal voting could lead to fraud and inaccurate results.

He floated a delay until people could “properly, securely and safely” vote. There is little evidence to support Mr Trump’s claims but he has long railed against postal voting, which he has said would be susceptible to fraud.

US states want to make mail-in voting easier because of public health concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Trump’s intervention came as new figures showed the US economy had suffered the worst contraction since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

How have Republicans reacted? Senator McConnell said no US presidential election had ever been delayed before.

“Never in the history of this country, through wars, depressions and the Civil War, have we ever not had a federally scheduled election on time. We will find a way to do that again this November third,” he told local Kentucky station WNKY.

Mr McCarthy echoed him. “Never in the history of the federal elections have we ever not held an election and we should go forward with our election,” he said.

Trump ally Senator Lindsay Graham meanwhile said a delay was “not a good idea”.

However, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo refused to be drawn on Mr Trump’s suggestion. Quizzed by reporters on whether a president could delay an election, he said he would not “enter a legal judgement on the fly”.

The spokesman for Mr Trump’s re-election campaign, Hogan Gidley, said Mr Trump had just been “raising a question”.

What did Trump say? At a Thursday afternoon White House news conference, Mr Trump denied he wanted to postpone the election, but argued that mass postal voting would leave the result in doubt.

“I don’t want to delay, I want to have the election,” he said. “But I also don’t want to have to wait for three months and then find out that the ballots are all missing and the election doesn’t mean anything.”

“I don’t want to see a crooked election,” Mr Trump also told reporters. “This election will be the most rigged election in history if that happens.”

In a series of tweets earlier, Mr Trump railed against mass postal voting and warned – without providing evidence – that it would be susceptible to foreign interference.

  • Barack Obama calls for end to US voter suppression

Former US President Barack Obama has sharply criticised what he described as Republican attempts at voter suppression in a speech at civil rights leader John Lewis’s funeral.

He said people in power were “attacking our voting rights with surgical precision” and called for wide reform.

He also decried the police killing of George Floyd and the subsequent use of federal agents against protesters.

Lewis died of cancer earlier this month aged 80.

He was one of the “Big Six” civil rights leaders, which included Martin Luther King Jr, and helped organise the historic 1963 March on Washington.

In a fiery eulogy delivered in Ebeneezer Baptist Church in the city of Atlanta, Mr Obama, a Democrat, launched a stinging attack on Republican President Donald Trump’s administration and some police departments.

“Today we witness with our own eyes, police officers kneeling on the necks of black Americans,” he said. “We can witness our federal government sending agents to use tear gas and batons against peaceful demonstrators.”

He said people in government were “doing their darnedest to discourage people from voting” by closing polling stations and imposing “restrictive ID laws” on minorities and students.

Mr Obama singled out the role of the US postal service in delivering postal votes amid the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier on Thursday Mr Trump suggested the 2020 presidential election in November should be delayed because he said – without providing evidence – that postal voting would enable large-scale voter fraud.

Mr Obama also proposed a series of reforms to voting in the US, including:

    – making sure Americans are automatically registered to vote
giving the vote to former prison inmates who had “earned their second chance”

    – creating new polling stations and expand early voting

    – making election day a national holiday so workers who can’t get time off can vote

He also called for people in Washington DC and Puerto Rico to have the same representation as other Americans, a long-cherished ambition of Democrats.

Washington is a federal district and so does not have representatives in Congress, but only a delegate to the House of Representatives with limited powers. Puerto Rico is a US territory that does not have representation in Congress and Puerto Ricans cannot vote in presidential elections.

And he called for an end to the filibuster – which requires 60 votes to pass legislation instead of a simple majority of 51. He described it as a “Jim Crow relic”. Jim Crow laws enforced racial segregation in southern states until 1965 and were used to disenfranchise black people.

“If all this takes eliminating the filibuster, another Jim Crow relic, in order to secure the God-given rights of every American, then that’s what we should do,” he said.

Paying tribute to Lewis, Mr Obama said he had becomes the first black US president because of the congressman’s fight for civil rights for black Americans.

Lewis, also a Democrat, did “everything he could to preserve this democracy and as long as we have breath in our bodies, we have to continue his cause,” Mr Obama said.

The service was also attended by former presidents Bill Clinton and George W Bush and House speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Mr Bush, a Republican, said he had his “differences” with the late congressman, but “we live in a better and nobler country today because of John Lewis”.

“He believed in humanity and he believed in America,” Mr Bush added.

During the civil rights movement, Lewis was one of the founders of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and then became its chairman from 1963 to 1966.

He co-organised and spoke at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the rally at which Dr King delivered his historic I Have a Dream speech. Lewis was the last surviving speaker from the march.

  • Taller people face higher risk of catching coronavirus – Survey

People over six feet tall are more than twice as likely to be diagnosed with the coronavirus, the results of a new survey reveal.

The global team of researchers, including experts from the University of Manchester and Open University, surveyed 2,000 people in the country, as well as the U.S., to determine whether their personal attributes, work and living practices might play a role in transmission, The Telegraph reported.

The results found that taller people are at a higher risk, which researchers say suggests that the contagion is spreading through the air — because height would not be a factor if the virus was only contractible through droplets, according to the report.

“The results of this survey in terms of associations between height and diagnosis suggest downward droplet transmission is not the only transmission mechanism and aerosol transmission is possible,” Professor Evan Kontopantelis, of the University of Manchester, told the outlet.

“This has been suggested by other studies, but our method of confirmation is novel,” he added.

“Though social distancing is still important because transmission by droplets is still likely to occur, it does suggest that mask-wearing may be just as — if not more — effective in prevention. But also, air purification in interior spaces should be further explored.”

Droplets are larger than aerosols and are thought to travel relatively short distances and plummet from the air, according to the report. But aerosols, which can build up in poorly ventilated areas, are carried by air currents.

The study also found that using a shared kitchen or accommodation played a large role — especially in the U.S., where those circumstances made the chances of contracting the bug 3.5 times as high.

In the U.K., chances were 1.7 times higher.

  • Andre Ayew is a better player than the Championship- Swansea manager admits

Swansea City manager Steve Cooper has admitted that Black Stars captain Andre Dede Ayew’s level is beyond the English Championship after a remarkable campaign.

Ayew’s dream of leading Swansea back to the topflight league suffered a big blow after their semi finals play offs defeat to Brentford.

The Swansea City vice captain was involved in 25 goals for the club as they reach the play-offs, netting 18 goals in all competitions and providing seven assists.

However, with the club’s failure to achieve promotion, the future of the 30-year old remains uncertain, with manager Steve Cooper hoping to have a conversation with the player about his next move.

“I think that’s a conversation me and Andre need to have,” Cooper told the media. “I would like nothing more than for Andre to be playing with us again next season,” he added.

“We have seen the real level of player he is this year, with the goals he has scored and the impact he has had on and off the pitch. It’s been brilliant to work with him.

“But I understand Andre is a better player than the Championship. That’s a matter of fact and I am sure he will have offers to do that.

“We need to have a good conversation over the next couple of days. We trust each other 100 per cent and in the end we will come to a resolution that’s right for everybody.”

  • Samuel Osei Kuffour to be appointed Kotoko CEO

It appears the Kumasi Asante Kotoko board is getting itchy fingers about appointing Nana Yaw Amponsah as the club’s new CEO.

He was in the frame for the job a few months ago before disappearing from the radar.

The latest person who the board is reportedly considering is former Bayern Munich and Black Stars defender Samuel Osei Kuffour.

According to credible Nyhira FM Sports Journalist, Bismark Owusu Bempah, aka Ayala, the board is close to appointing Samuel Osei Kuffour as the new CEO.

Not too long ago, the former Ajax, Roma defender was a member of the GFA’s Normalization Committee and has in the past came very close to landing the Kotoko top job only to lose it because he reportedly granted an interview on Metro TV even before the Manhyia Palace could do so.

The former SuperSports pundit made 54 appearances for Ghana, scoring three goal and played at four AFCON tournaments  and was part of Ghana’s maiden FIFA World Cup squad in 2006.
