  • SWAG is 52 years today

Fifty-two years in the life of anyone or an organization is significant enough as it defines the direction of the next 50 years after the Golden Jubilee celebrations.

Despite the changing phases of the industry which has evolved around the traditional media to electronic and now the new media, our industry has thrived, providing the spring required to make the industry successful.

Organizations and associations such as ours, thrive on the commitment and dedication of its members and while some that began the journey with us have fallen off the way, the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has remained true to the ideals of the founding fathers.

For the past five decades, batons have changed hands with generations after generations playing their roles steadily, helping to remain the conscience of the people and the voice of the sportsmen and sportswomen as well as a key stakeholder in the development and promotion of the industry.

As we chart the path leading us steadily towards 60 years, it is important to take stock of where we have come from and where we are heading towards and the need for us to also keep abreast of the fast-changing technology-driven the industry to remain relevant and protect our means of livelihood.

That has become even more important as unexpectedly, the world was hit by a crisis that took everyone unawares and which is threatening the very existence of people of which our industry has not been spared the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic as all competitions both at the local and international levels, that fuel our jobs had to be cancelled, leaving many of us to draw deep and show our ingenuity and innovativeness.

Now more than ever, we will have to individually and collectively work towards safeguarding our work, adapting to the changing trends to ensure that we thrive no matter what and by so doing, give life to our association, because it can only be when we are.

As we commemorate this 52nd anniversary, it is important to yet again pay glowing tribute to our forebearers namely Joe Lartey, Willie Kwarteng, Oheneba Charles, Joe Aggrey, Ebo Quansah, Ackah Anthony and all that served SWAG in various capacities whose tireless efforts have helped build brands and images that have placed SWAG where it stands today one of the active members of our mother body, the Association of International Sports Press (AIPS) and it is heartwarming to note that members are also not just participating in the activities of the mother body, but excelling.

SWAG was inaugurated on August 3, 1968, with 12 members in Accra, has grown in membership to about 300 from the Ashanti, Bono, Eastern, Volta regions, and will soon inaugurate the Western and all the northern branches.

However, it will not be enough to have just the numbers thus it is important to emulate our forebearers whose commitment, dedication, and sense of duty has turned our association into one of the biggest umbrella bodies in the media industry in the country.

It is in order to pat ourselves on the shoulders for the good job done so far, but this is also a strong reminder that there is still a lot more to be achieved.
We can confidently say SWAG has grown bigger and better, become more relevant and building the capacity of the sports media in Ghana.

Though we are celebrating, we are also saddened by the news of the demise of Mr. George Painstil, the CEO of Presence Ghana Limited, who designed the logo that has given us our identity. He was for a very long time, a good friend of the association, and played key roles in keeping the prestigious SWAG Awards going.

We send our heartfelt condolences to the family. May his soul and that of all sports stakeholders who have also departed rest in peace.

As we proudly commemorate our 52nd Anniversary we salute all sports journalists for the watchdog role played, their effort in influencing development and promotion but urge all our members and practitioners to imbibe a true sense of professionalism, objectivity, integrity, and strong principles, qualities our forbears bequeathed to us, and which defines our profession.

  • Fiorentina’s Duncan and Kouame end Serie A campaign with a bang

Ghana’s Alfred Duncan and Ivory Coast’s Christian Kouame scored a goal each as Fiorentina ended their 2019-20 Serie A season with a 3-1 win against SPAL.

Duncan broke the deadlock at the Stadio Paolo Mazza in the 30th minute with his maiden goal for the Violets since his loan signing from Sassuolo in January.

Nine minutes later, Marco D’Alessandro equalised for SPAL as both teams headed into the interval with a 1-1 draw.

Both teams were tied for the majority of the second 45 minutes until Christian Kouame, who came on as a 55th-minute substitute for Kevin Agudelo, fired Fiorentina ahead in the 89th minute.

Eric Pulgar assisted the Ivorian forward in breaking his duck for Giuseppe Iachini’s side with his first since his loan signing from Genoa in January.

A few minutes later, Pulgar wrapped up the victory for the visitors with his strike from the penalty spot in the stoppage-time.

Duncan was replaced by Christian Dalle Mura in the 95th minute, while Burkina Faso’s Bryan Dabo, Algeria’s Mohamed Fares and Senegal goalkeeper Demba Thiam could not stop SPAL from dropping to the Serie B.

They finished the campaign at the bottom of the Italian top flight table with 20 points from 38 matches, while Fiorentina secured the 10th spot with 49 points after the same number of games.

A ruptured cruciate ligament injury picked up during the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations in Egypt back in November delayed Kouame’s debut for the Violets until July.

He made his long-awaited return to action in the goalless draw against Cagliari on July 8 and went on to play six more games.

It remains to be seen if Fiorentina will activate the option to sign Kouame permanently in the coming days. Meanwhile, they have the obligation to sign Duncan on a permanent deal after signing him temporarily earlier this year.

  • What is the future of Kurt Okraku if Palmer wins case against GFA?

The future of Ghana FA boss Kurt Okraku could be thrown wide opened if Wilfred Osei Kweku “Palmer” wins his landmark case against the association at the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Tuesday.

If Palmer’s reliefs are granted by the world sport court on August 4,  it will essentially collapse the 10-month presidency of the former Dreams FC Executive chairman.

Okraku coasted to a sweet victory in the presidential election back in October last year after a rigorous campaign.

But his young administration could be scuttled if Palmer becomes successful at the global tribunal.

The Ghana FA boss could face another bout of a laborious re-election bid if the association losses the case at CAS.

However, these are ifs and buts with the much anticipated verdict expected to put paid to the long-winding battle that has rocked the Ghana FA before Mr Okraku assumed the top position.

Palmer dragged the defunct normalisation committee to CAS for an unfair and “calculated” disqualification from the presidential race.

The verdict has a far reaching implication for both parties with CAS set to announce the ruling on Tuesday August 4.

There are two things likely to happen – CAS to throw out the case and allow the status quo to remain or order for a re-run of the election if it was deemed the plaintiff was unfairly disqualified from the race.

These are frenetic times for the followers of both disqualified aspirant Wilfred Osei Kweku and current FA boss Kurt Okraku.

Palmer dragged the FA to the apex of world sports court after he was disqualified from contesting the 2019 Presidential race by the defunct normalisation committee.

CAS will announce the decision whether to uphold Palmer’s quest to annul the election and order for fresh polls to decide on a new President for the GFA or allow the status quo to remain.

The situation has put the presidency of Kurt Okraku on the line with wide-reaching implications if Palmer becomes successful.

The ruling from CAS will put to rest months of intense anxiety involving all the principal actors.

  • What future remains for Palmer if he loses case against GFA

Tema Youth president Wilfred Osei Kweku “Palmer” could be facing an uncertain future if he losses his case against the Ghana Football Association at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Tuesday.

Palmer who was successful at the global tribunal in 2016, is facing another battle for a re-election bid following his disqualification from the race by the defunct normalisation committee.

The investment banker is challenging his unfair elimination from the presidential race 10-months ago.

However, it remains unclear what the future will hold for the hugely respected football owner if he becomes unsuccessful at the world sport court.

A defeat for Palmer will be a huge financial loss to the former Ghana FA Executive Council member  after paying a staggering $48,000 fee for the case to be heard.

Also, it will be a massive blow to his numerous followers, who are in a positive mood ahead of the much-awaited verdict on Tuesday August 4.

The chips will fall in place for both parties latest by Tuesday to bring to an end a long-winding 10-month litigation involving the two parties.

The verdict from CAS will be the final coffin for both Palmer and the Ghana Football Association as it will bring a closure to the litigation which has brought so much animosity and anger.

There are two things likely to happen – CAS to throw out the case and allow the status quo to remain or order for a re-run of the election if it was deemed the plaintiff was unfairly disqualified from the race.

  • Upper West Regional NPP youth organizer suspended

The Upper West Regional Executive Committee of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has suspended the Regional Youth Organizer of the party, John Bosco Luri Tia.

The Regional Communication Director of the party, Ali Bukari who revealed this to Citi News said the suspension of John Bosco was a unanimous decision taken at an executive committee meeting last Thursday to review a petition filed by a member of the party against him.

He said: “I can confirm that the regional youth organizer has been asked to step aside. A member of our party petitioned the regional executive committee to suspend him. When the petition was brought, we held a meeting where Mr. Bosco himself was present. A unanimous decision was taken that he should be made to step aside while we wait for investigations into the petition”.

Citi News checks indicate that one Sadik Adinan petitioned the regional executive committee to remove John Bosco Luri Tia from office, citing his inability to mobilize the youth in the Upper West region for party activities as the basis for his demand.

The petitioner also accused the youth organizer of engaging in divisive tendencies which he claims had created bad blood between some executives of the party in the region.

He further blamed the NPP regional youth scribe of absenting himself from the region, particularly anytime the President or his vice is visiting the region as well as refusing to deliver some bags of sugar that were given to him to be released to constituency youth organizers during the fasting season.

Citi News contacted the suspended youth organizer who contested but lost in the last NPP parliamentary primaries in the Sissala west constituency but he declined to comment on the allegations.

Meanwhile, a statement signed by the Upper West regional chairman of the NPP, Mr. Saanbeye Basilide Kangbare says “following the suspension of the Regional Youth Organiser, Mr Luri Tia John Bosco, a seven-member youth committee has been formed to unite and motivate the youth in readiness for the upcoming general elections”.

According to the statement, “the committee consists of the Deputy Youth Organiser, the three other aspirants to the Office in the last Regional Elections, the Wa Central Constituency Youth Organiser, the TESCOM Coordinator and the Mandom constituency youth organizer.

  • Gunmen storm prison in Afghanistan’s Jalalabad, over 20 killed

At least 21 people have been killed in ongoing fighting between Afghan security forces and gunmen who raided a jail overnight in an attack claimed by ISIL (ISIS) group, officials said on Monday.

Among the dead were prisoners as well as civilians, prison guards and Afghan security personnel, Attaullah Khogyani, a spokesman for the governor of Nangarhar province, told Al Jazeera.

Another 43 people have been wounded in the attack in the provincal capital Jalalabad that began late on Sunday when an ISIL suicide bomber slammed his explosive-laden vehicle into the gate of the prison.

More assailants opened fire. Three attackers have been killed so far as the battle continued on Monday, Khogyani said.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group’s affiliate in Afghanistan, known as IS in Khorasan province, claimed responsibility for the attack. The affiliate is headquartered in Nangarhar province.

Afghan officials said the death toll could rise.

Police were forced to divert manpower to recapture escaped prisoners and by noon on Monday around 1,000 had been caught, according to Khogyani.

The prison houses about 2,000 inmates, including many from the ISIL and the Taliban.

The Jalalabad city was put under lockdown. “The whole city of Jalalabad is under curfew, shops are closed. Jalalabad is completely empty,” Sohrab Qaderi, a lawmaker in the capital of Nangarhar province, told Reuters.

Earlier, a Taliban spokesperson said on Twitter that the group was not involved in the attack, which came on the final day of a rare truce between the armed group and the Afghan government to mark the Eid al-Adha Muslim holiday.

The prison attack came a day after the Afghan intelligence agency said a senior ISIL commander was killed by Afghan special forces near Jalalabad, about 150km (93 miles) east of the capital, Kabul.

Nangarhar has been hit by regular attacks, several of them claimed by ISIL.

On May 12, a suicide bomber killed 32 mourners at a funeral for a police commander in the province, in one of the deadliest attacks this year also claimed by ISIL.

A United Nations report last month estimated there are around 2,200 ISIL members in Afghanistan, and that while the group is in “territorial retreat” and its leadership has been depleted, it “remains capable of carrying out high-profile attacks in various parts of the country, including Kabul”.

Efforts to get peace talks under way between the Taliban and the Kabul government have stalled after the Taliban and the United States signed an agreement in February, touted as the deal to end Washington’s longest war.

The agreement struck in Qatar’s capital, Doha, lays out plans for the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan in exchange for security guarantees from the Taliban.

Last week, a UN report said almost 1,300 civilians, including hundreds of children, were killed in Afghanistan in the first six months of the year, a 13 percent drop compared with the same period in 2019.

The report credited the drop in part to the reduction of operations by international forces in support of Afghan government forces and also to a decrease in the number of attacks by ISIL.

  • UK to roll out millions of 90-minute ‘rapid tests’

Britain is set to roll out millions of new, 90-minute “rapid tests” for the novel Coronavirus and other viruses common in winter, the country’s health ministry has said.

Starting next week, hospitals, nursing homes and laboratories will have access to some 5.8 million tests analysing DNA and another 450,000 swab tests.

Neither requires medical training to administer, meaning they can be performed in non-clinical environments, the ministry said in a statement released on Monday.

This would be a significant increase on current testing capacity in the country and would aim to limit community spread of the virus before the cold months, when people are more vulnerable to viruses

“The fact these tests can detect flu, as well as COVID-19, will be hugely beneficial as we head into winter, so patients can follow the right advice to protect themselves and others,” Health Minister Matt Hancock said.

Approximately 5,000 machines that will be used for the analysis of DNA collected in nasal swabs will be distributed to government hospitals from September.

“We have been able to successfully adapt our in-store consumer DNA testing technology – which identifies genetic risks for chronic conditions related to obesity and type 2 diabetes – and validate it for detecting COVID-19 with gold-standard accuracy,” said Chris Toumazou, CEO and co-founder of DnaNudge, the company the produced the DNA-based tests and associated machines.

Meanwhile, almost half a million of the new swab tests, called LamPORE, will be available at elder care settings and labs from next week, with millions more to be rolled out later in the year.

With more than 300,000 cases of infection recorded, the UK has been hit hardest in Europe by the pandemic in terms of the death toll.

More than 46,000 people have died from COVID-19, according to official figures, the fourth-highest toll in the world.

Britain’s healthcare system has come under severe strain during peaks in the outbreak.

Separately, the publicly funded National Health Service (NHS) said it would be offering “COVID-friendly” treatments to cancer patients, including drugs that do not have a big impact on the immune system.

Despite some respite granted businesses by government with the ¢600 million stimulus package, close to 131,000 businesses revealed they still had challenges accessing finance with over 60 per cent calling for subsidised interest rates.

The sample for the research were extracted from the Ghana Business Register, Non-farm establishments from Ghana Living Standards Survey and National Board for Small Scale Industries.

Data was collected between May 26 to June 17, 2020, with a targeted sample size of 4,248 businesses.

  • German children start new school year amid pandemic

A new school year has kicked off in parts of Germany, where pupils have daily class for the first time since a coronavirus lockdown in March. Catch up with this and other latest news on the COVID-19 pandemic.

School children in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern went back to school on Monday, the first state in Germany where the academic year has started again following the summer holidays. For the first time since the coronavirus lockdown closed schools in mid-March, the state’s 152,700 pupils and students will once again have daily classes.

Around 400 of the state’s 13,000 teachers are considered at high risk for COVID-19 and will therefore work from home. Consequently, distance learning will continue to play a role this school year.

To minimize the risk of infection, pupils have been divided into set groups which are not to intermingle, though social-distancing within those groups is not required. Medical face masks are also required in the halls of the building.

Some islands in the northern state of Schleswig-Holsten also returned to school on Monday. The city of Hamburg will follow suit on Thursday, with schools in Berlin, the surrounding state of Brandenburg, as well as the western state of North Rhine Westphalia due to join next week.

Here’s a roundup of the other major stories regarding coronavirus around the world:

    Asia

A body of lawyers in Hong Kong have said that their government’s move to postpone Legislative Council elections may be unlawful.

There are “serious doubts about the legal and evidential basis of the government’s decision,” the Hong Kong’s Bar Association said on Sunday.

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam on Friday had announced that she was postponing an election planned for September 6 for one year due to concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

Meanwhile, the mandate of Hong Kong’s current Legislative Council is due to expire. Lam asked China’s parliament to resolve the issue.

The bar association said the local government was “effectively inviting” Beijing to “override the relevant provisions” of its mini-constitution.

Authorities in the Philippines said on Sunday they would reimpose a stricter lockdown in the capital, Manila, and nearby provinces on Tuesday, with restrictions remaining till August 18.

Under the lockdown, some businesses and public transport are expected to be shut down in the capital, and work and quarantine passes will be required. Currently, the city is under restrictions but of a less stringent nature.

The move, approved by President Rodrigo Duterte, comes after 80 local groups representing medical workers called for a reimposition of lockdown restrictions, saying the country was losing its battle against the pandemic.

The country experienced its largest daily rise in recorded infections on Sunday, with 5,032 new cases taking the confirmed total to 103,185. The death toll rose by 20 to 2,059.

The toll of infections and death is the second-highest in Southeast Asia after Indonesia.

Manila and other provinces were already subject to one of the longest and strictest lockdowns in the world for three months from mid-March. President Rodrigo Duterte began loosening the restrictions in June in a bid to revive the economy, which is facing its biggest slump in more than three decades.

Australia’s second-biggest city of Melbourne is under an overnight curfew, after a surge of infections in the state of which it is the capital, Victoria, caused authorities to declare a state of disaster.

Under newly imposed restrictions, Melbourne residents will be allowed to shop and exercise only within 5 kilometers (3 miles) of their homes, while students will return to learning at home. L

Less strict restrictions are in force in other regions of the state, which currently has 6,322 cases of active infection. The measures are to stay in place until at least September 13.

India’s Interior Minister Amit Shah, 55, who heads the ministry that is mainly responsible for managing the epidemic in the country, has tested positive for COVID-19 and been admitted to hospital. He is the most senior politician in India to have contracted the disease.

Meanwhile, renowned veteran Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan, who was taken to hospital on July 11 with his son Abhishek after testing positive for the disease, has been discharged from hospital in Mumbai. In a tweet, he thanked the staff at Nanavati Hospital for his recovery.

India has recorded its steepest spike of 57,118 new cases over the past day, taking its coronavirus caseload close to 1.7 million, with July alone accounting for nearly 1.1 million infections. Is public negligence causing a surge in cases? Read our full story here.

In the Philippines, coronavirus infections have passed the 100,000 mark after a record 5,032 cases were reported on Sunday. The total caseload is now 103,185, with the death toll also rising on Sunday by 20 to 2,059. Health care workers have called on the government to reimpose a lockdown in the capital, Manila, in a bid to curb the spread of the disease.

    Europe

The northern English city of Manchester has declared a “major incident” to increase coordination and free resources to combat a rising number of coronavirus cases, a local official was quoted as saying by the Manchester Evening News.

“It allows the establishment of a central command structure to oversee the response and enables agencies involved to draw on extra resources,” said the head of the city council, Richard Leese.

He said such a declaration was “standard practice” for situations where several agencies had to coordinate and that residents should not be alarmed.

Belgium is the latest European country to ban travel to some areas of Spain due to a surge in cases. The regions of Navarra and Aragon, along with the Catalan cities of Barcelona and Lleida are now prohibited for non-essential travel.

Belgium has also put areas in Bulgaria, Romania, central England, northern France and Switzerland on its red list, which means anyone returning from these locations must self-isolate.

From Saturday, arrivals into Belgium have to fill out forms stating where they have been over the past 14 days.

Around 20,000 protesters rallied in Germany’s capital Berlinon Saturday, with many ignoring social distancing rules and labeling the pandemic a “false alarm.” Police eventually broke up the demonstration and some people were forcibly removed by officers. Read more about the protests

    Latin America

Rising death tolls in countries like Brazil and Mexico have cemented Latin America’s status as one of the epicenters of the virus as cases in the region have doubled over the past month to more than 4.7 million infections.

The real number of infections is likely to be higher, as comparatively fewer people are being tested there.

    North America

The coronavirus has been blamed for the decision to hold the vote to renominate Donald Trump as the Republican candidate for president in private. A spokeswoman for the Republican National Convention said the poll would take place without the presence of the media.

Trump called off the public components of the convention in Florida last month, citing spiking cases of the virus. However, 336 delegates are scheduled to gather in Charlotte, North Carolina, on August 24 to formally vote to make Trump the GOP standard-bearer once more.

Nominating conventions are traditionally meant to be media frenzies, as political parties seek to leverage the attention the events draw to spread their message to as many voters as possible.

Also in the US, Hurricane Isaias’ imminent arrival forced the closure of some outdoor testing sites even as Florida reached a new daily high in deaths.

    Middle East

Muslims are marking the Eid al-Adha holiday despite restrictions due to the pandemic. The streets of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, have been largely empty due to a 10-day lockdown imposed by authorities to prevent further spread of the virus.

The last day of the annual hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia has been taking place with as few as 1,000 pilgrims compared to last year’s 2.5 million.

Meanwhile, an Israeli Cabinet minister says he has tested positive for the coronavirus. Minister for Jerusalem and Heritage Rafi Peretz tweeted late Saturday that he received a positive result, but said he felt well.

Israel is experiencing a surge in coronavirus cases after having largely contained an earlier outbreak in the spring.

    Africa

South Africa has surpassed 500,000 confirmed cases, but President Cyril Ramaphosa said Sunday he sees “promising signs’” that the rapid growth of infections has stabilized.

South Africa has now tallied more than 50% of all recorded infections in Africa’s 54 countries and has the fifth-highest number of cases in the world.

The country’s hospitals have been stretched to the limit but in most provinces, they are succeeding in providing treatment to COVID-19 patients, Ramaphosa said.

The coronavirus pandemic has had devastating effects on finances worldwide, both public and private. A new study has found that in Germany, it is the under-30s who have been bearing the brunt. And at a psychological level, it is women who have been suffering more than men.

  • GRA denies misleading reports about 45% shortfall in revenue target

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has said media reports that the Tema Collection of the Customs Division has failed to meet its revenue target by 45% are false and misleading.

According to the GRA, the malicious reports sought to blame the deployment of the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS) at the Tema port for the revenue shortfall.

“The Customs Division on the average collects GH¢942 million monthly. The average three months run rate for Tema collection for 2020 is GH¢574.8 million. This figure compares with the June performance of the Tema Collection of GH¢554 million and does not show any significant difference in collection,” the GRA explained in a statement.

The Republic Online reported five days ago that poor revenue figures at the Tema Collection point of the GRA were being kept under wraps because government was bent on painting a good picture of the ICUMS.

The online portal reported that “in plain figures, the total revenue raised at the Tema Ports for June 2020 summed up to only GH¢553,566,898.06 when the revenue target was GH¢1,006,880,000.00.”

But the GRA in the statement denied the claims as without merit and scandalous.

  • Armed soldiers raid 5 houses in Honuta

Armed soldiers raided at least five houses in the border town of Honuta in the Ho West District on July 7 and subjected the occupant to terror after falsely accusing them of hosting Togolese contracted to take part in the voter registration exercise, the Honuta Traditional Council has confirmed.

This was during the second day of the voter registration exercise in the area.

Elder Robert Atutornu, secretary of the council stated that the soldiers who were supported by a vigilante group ransacked the rooms in the houses they invaded but found no Togolese in any of the rooms.

He made the startling revelation when the President of the National House of Chiefs, Togbe Afede XIV and members of the Volta Region House of Chiefs called at the palace of the acting Paramount Chef of Honuta, Togbe Agamasu II, during their tour of some border traditional areas at the weekend.

The tour followed growing reports of unmitigated harassment of people in those communities by personnel of the security agencies.

Elder Robert Atutornu said that the invasion of homes by the soldiers had left the people of Honuta in a state of great fear and anxiety.

In one instance, he said that the Awafiaga (war lord) of Honuta, Togbe Awudzatse IV was travelling with one of his sub-chiefs to nearby Akorme, only for them to be intercepted mid-way into the journey by the thugs who were assisting the security agencies.

According to Elder Atutornu, the thugs ordered the Awafiaga and the sub-chief to return to Honuta after telling them that their faces looked more Togolese than Ghanaian.

The Awafiaga and the sub-chief did not budge, the visiting delegation was told.

The Honuta Traditional Council secretary said that some farmers at Honuta who turned up at the registration centres were turned away by security operatives who described them as Togolese.

He said that the fertile farmlands of Honuta were also occupied by people from Adaklu, Goviefe, Akatsi, Ho and Krobo which were all in Ghana, adding that no Togolese nationals crossed into Honuta to register at any of the centres during the exercise.

Elder Atutornu said that the people of Honuta had lived in peace and harmony with neighbours in the Klor Prefecture of Togo for years, insisting that there was no conflict between them to warrant a military intervention.

“It beggars belief that some people are now re-defining the border between us to tell us who is a Ghanaian and who is a Togolese,” he told the delegation.

In response, Togbe Afede said that the reports were most unpleasant.

For that matter, he gave the assurance that the Volta chiefs would seek a meeting with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as soon as possible to address the problem.

The chiefs also visited the Honuta Border Post which remained closed with no crossing into Ghana or Togo.

The DCE Mr Ernest Victor Apau turned up at the border post to meet with the chief but that was not part of their agenda.

  • COVID-19: WHO warns there might not be a silver bullet solution

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said that there is a possibility that a “silver bullet” answer to defeating the virus might never happen.

Director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual press conference: “There is no silver bullet at the moment and there might never be”.

It comes just days after the WHO warned that the pandemic was likely to be “lengthy”.

A number of trials are taking place around the world to help try and find a vaccine to fight the virus.

Last month, an Oxford University announced that its vaccine appeared safe and triggered an immune response. More than 10,000 people will take part in the next stage of the trial.

  • Iran cover-up of deaths revealed by data leak

The number of deaths from coronavirus in Iran is nearly triple what Iran’s government claims, a BBC Persian service investigation has found.

The government’s own records appear to show almost 42,000 people died with COVID-19 symptoms up to 20 July, versus 14,405 reported by its health ministry.

The number of people known to be infected is also almost double official figures: 451,024 as opposed to 278,827.

The official numbers still make Iran the worst-hit in the Middle East.

In recent weeks, it has suffered a second steep rise in the number of cases.

The first death in Iran from COVID-19 was recorded on 22 January, according to lists and medical records that have been passed to the BBC. This was almost a month before the first official case of coronavirus was reported there.

Daily number of deaths from COVID-19 in Iran
Official figures vs uncovered data, 22 January to 20 July 2020

Since the outbreak of the virus in Iran, many observers have doubted the official numbers.

There have been irregularities in data between national and regional levels, which some local authorities have spoken out about, and statisticians have tried to give alternative estimates..

A level of undercounting, largely due to testing capacity, is seen across the world, but the information leaked to the BBC reveals Iranian authorities have reported significantly lower daily numbers despite having a record of all deaths – suggesting they were deliberately suppressed.

Where did the data come from?

The data was sent to the BBC by an anonymous source.

It includes details of daily admissions to hospitals across Iran, including names, age, gender, symptoms, date and length of periods spent in hospital, and underlying conditions patients might have.

The details on lists correspond to those of some living and deceased patients already known to the BBC.

The source says they have shared this data with the BBC to “shed light on truth” and to end “political games” over the epidemic.

The discrepancy between the official figures and the number of deaths on these records also matches the difference between the official figure and calculations of excess mortality until mid-June.

Excess mortality refers to the number of deaths above and beyond what would be expected under “normal” conditions.

    What does the data reveal?

Tehran, the capital, has the highest number of deaths with 8,120 people who died with COVID-19 or symptoms similar to it.

The city of Qom, the initial epicentre of the virus in Iran, is worst hit proportionally, with 1,419 deaths – that is one death with COVID-19 for every 1,000 people.

It is notable that, across the country, 1,916 deaths were non-Iranian nationals. This indicates a disproportionate number of deaths amongst migrants and refugees, who are mostly from neighbouring Afghanistan.

The overall trend of cases and deaths in the leaked data is similar to official reports, albeit different in size.

The initial rise of deaths is far steeper than Health Ministry figures and by mid-March it was five times the official figure.

Lockdown measures were imposed over the Nowruz (Iranian New Year) holidays at the end of the third week in March, and there was a corresponding decline in cases and deaths.

But as government restrictions were relaxed, the cases and deaths started to rise again after late-May.

Crucially the first recorded death on the leaked list occurred on 22 January, a month before the first case of coronavirus was officially reported in Iran.

At the time Health Ministry officials were adamant in acknowledging not a single case of coronavirus in the country, despite reports by journalists inside Iran, and warnings from various medical professionals.

In 28 days until the first official acknowledgement on 19 February, 52 people had already died.

    Who were the first whistleblowers?

Doctors with direct knowledge of the matter have told the BBC that the Iranian health ministry has been under pressure from security and intelligence bodies inside Iran.

Dr Pouladi (not their real name) told the BBC that the ministry “was in denial”.

“Initially they did not have testing kits and when they got them, they weren’t used widely enough. The position of the security services was not to admit to the existence of coronavirus in Iran,” Dr Pouladi said.

It was the persistence of two brothers, both doctors from Qom, which forced the health ministry to acknowledge the first official case.

When Dr Mohammad Molayi and Dr Ali Molayi lost their brother, they insisted he should still be tested for COVID-19, which turned out to be positive.

In Kamkar hospital, where their brother died, numerous patients were admitted with similar symptoms to COVID-19, and they would not respond to the usual treatments. Nevertheless, none of them were tested for the disease.

Dr Pouladi says: “They got unlucky. Someone with both decency and influence lost his brother. Dr Molayi had access to these gentlemen [health ministry officials] and did not give up.”

Dr Molayi released a video of his late brother with a statement. The health ministry then finally acknowledged the first recorded case.

Nevertheless state TV ran a report criticising him and falsely claiming the video of his brother was months old.

    Why the cover-up?

The start of outbreak coincided both with the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution and with parliamentary elections.

These were major opportunities for the Islamic Republic to demonstrate its popular support and not risk damaging it because of the virus.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader, accused some of wanting to use the coronavirus to undermine the election.

In the event, the election had a very low turnout.

Before the global coronavirus pandemic hit, Iran was already experiencing a series of its own crises.

In November 2019, the government increased the price of petrol overnight and cracked down violently on protests which followed. Hundreds of protesters were killed in a few days.

In January this year, the Iranian response to the US assassination of top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani, seen as one of the most powerful figures in Iran after its Supreme Leader, created another problem.

Then Iranian armed forces – on high alert – mistakenly fired missiles at a Ukrainian airliner only minutes after it had taken off from Tehran’s international airport. All 176 people on board were killed.

The Iranian authorities initially tried to cover up what happened, but after three days they were forced to admit it, resulting in considerable loss of face.

Dr Nouroldin Pirmoazzen, a former MP who also was an official at the health ministry, told the BBC that in this context, the Iranian government was “anxious and fearful of the truth” when coronavirus hit Iran.

He said: “The government was afraid that the poor and the unemployed would take to the streets.”

Dr Pirmoazzen points to the fact that Iran stopped international health organisation Médecins Sans Frontières from treating coronavirus cases in the central province of Isfahan as evidence of how security-conscious its approach towards the pandemic is.

Iran was going through tough times even before the military showdown with the US and coronavirus hit.

The sanctions which followed Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the nuclear deal in May 2018 hit the economy hard.

Dr Pouladi says: “Those who brought the country to this point don’t pay the price. It is the poor people of the country and my poor patients who pay the price with their lives.”

“In the confrontation between the governments of the US and Iran we are getting crushed with pressures from both sides.”

The health ministry has said that the country’s reports to the World Health Organization regarding the number of coronavirus cases and deaths are “transparent” and “far from any deviations”.

  • No signs Trump has pandemic plan despite chilling warnings

Donald Trump‘s top government experts now say that the pandemic is entering a new phase as it invades the rural heartland — and they can’t say how long it will last.

With millions of kids nowhere near going back to school and the economy reeling from a 32.9% annualized contraction in the second quarter, the months ahead are stretching into what looks like an endless crisis as Trump tweets “Make America Great Again” and spends his weekends on the golf course.

Top administration officials in recent days have repeatedly delivered information and warnings that directly contradict Trump’s upbeat messaging on Friday on the virus: “We’ll get rid of it, we’ll beat it, and it will be soon.”

Amid this grim outlook, the administration and Capitol Hill Democrats are deadlocked on a plan to extend federal unemployment payments to millions of Americans who lost their jobs in lockdowns.

Dr. Deborah Birx delivered a series of stunning warnings on CNN’s “State of the Union” five months into a pandemic that the President once said posed no threat to Americans but has now killed more than 150,000 of them.

“What we are seeing today is different from March and April. It is extraordinarily widespread. It’s into the rural as equal urban areas,” Birx, the White House coronavirus task force coordinator, told CNN’s Dana Bash.
Birx even suggested that some Americans in multi-generational families should start wearing masks in their home and assume that they already have the disease.

She did not reject a warning by former Federal Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb that there could be 300,000 coronavirus deaths by the end of the year, saying, “Anything is possible.”
“To everybody who lives in a rural area, you are not immune or protected from this virus,” Birx said.

Her comments came after her colleague, Dr. Anthony Fauci, told a House committee on Friday it was “unclear” how long the crisis will last. But the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told Americans to brace for an average of 1,000 deaths a day for the next 30 days.

And while there are some signs that infections have plateaued in sunbelt states in the last week, albeit at high levels, Birx’s words suggest new epicenters are looming, a situation hardly consistent with Trump’s description of “embers” of infection.

The President speaks optimistically about a coming vaccination — though experts say it could still be months away — and boasts about advances in therapeutics and of building thousands of ventilators. But the horrible statistics of the pandemic are relentless with 1,000 Americans dying almost every day. And the administration response appears — as it has from the start — short of the scale needed to beat back the worst public health crisis in 100 years.

    ‘Assume you are infected’

With a vaccine still lacking, Birx also warned that too many Americans were not taking the virus sufficiently seriously, in another jarring disconnect from the President’s messaging.

“Across America right now, people are on the move … as I traveled around the country, I saw all of America moving. I think it’s our job, as public health officials, to be able to get a message to each American that says, if you have chosen to go on vacation into a hot spot, you really need to come back and protect those with comorbidities and assume you’re infected.”
Despite the worsening crisis, there is no sign of a new administration approach, or evidence of an effort to set up the massive testing and tracing nationwide program that experts say is needed to finally get a handle on the crisis.

But surprisingly, Birx said the administration had already re-examined its approach.
“I think the federal government reset about five to six weeks ago when we saw this starting to happen across the South,” she told Bash.

At the start of a rough six-week period that saw the virus surge unimpeded through Florida, Texas, Arizona and other states that Trump pressured to open before the pathogen was under control, Vice President Mike Pence, who heads the coronavirus task force, declared in a Wall Street Journal op-ed that the US is “winning the fight” and there “isn’t a ‘second wave.’”
Birx has faced criticism for becoming too compliant with the administration’s political line rather than following the science where it leads.

Birx defended herself on “State of the Union” after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she didn’t have confidence in the veteran public health official because she was an appointee of a President who is spreading disinformation.
“I have never been called Pollyannish or non-scientific or non-data-driven,” Birx said on “State of the Union.”

Birx contradicted the President’s call for schools to open everywhere, saying that where there is a high caseload and active community spread, where people shouldn’t go to bars or have house parties, they should “distance-learn at this moment so we can get this epidemic under control.”
Another senior administration official involved in the fight against the pandemic, testing czar Adm. Brett Giroir, contradicted the President’s fresh touting of hydroxychloroquine last week as a potential treatment for Covid-19.

“At this point in time, there’s been five randomized controlled, placebo controlled trials, that do not show any benefit to hydroxychloroquine,” Giroir said on NBC News’ “Meet the Press.”

“I think most physicians and prescribers are evidence-based and they’re not influenced by whatever is on Twitter or anything else,” he said. “And the evidence just doesn’t show that hydroxychloroquine is effective right now.”

    Trump’s disconnect on the crisis

Far from showing that he understand the depths of the calamity and has a plan to address it, Trump spent the weekend spreading lies and disinformation in between two trips to his golf course in Virginia, again underscoring how he has declined to adopt the leadership role that would have been expected from a traditional president during a grave national crisis.
He again falsely claimed that the only reason there are more cases of the virus is because the US is doing new testing. He gloated about “Big China Virus breakouts” in nations where reopenings have caused viral spikes and where leaders did a better job in quelling the virus than he did in the United States. Trump also claimed falsely that the media was not reporting on such hotspots around the world.

The President also launched a new attack on Fauci, who said last week that the reason Europe did better containing the initial pandemic was because it shut down far more of its economy that the President allowed in the US.

Trump’s tweets followed a report by Vanity Fair last week that Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner worked on a secret national testing plan last spring before the approach was rejected, reportedly for political reasons, in favor of putting the responsibility for fighting the virus on
    individual governors.

Since then, tens of thousands of Americans have died and experts say there still is not sufficient testing capacity to flatten the infection curve of the virus. Many test results are coming back far too slowly to be of any use controlling the spread of the disease. The White House says the premise of the article is wrong and misstates the facts.

    Deadlock in stimulus talks

Hopes that a new coronavirus stimulus program could soon come to the rescue of millions of Americans who rely on federal unemployment payments to pay for food and rent were dashed as both sides in the talks dug in on Sunday.
Pelosi, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows are due to meet for further talks on Monday.
Pelosi rejected the administration’s argument that the $600 unemployment benefit was stopping Americans from returning to work but did not specifically say it was a deal breaker.

“The $600 is essential. It’s essential for America’s working families. And, again, to condescend, to disrespect their motivation is so amazing … how insistent the Republicans are about a working family and their $600 and how cavalier they are about other money that is going out,” the speaker said.
Mnuchin argued that the White House had proposed a one-week unemployment benefit extension of $600 as negotiations continued, but had been rebuffed by Democrats. Without giving details, the Treasury secretary also said he and Meadows made “three or four” other offers to the Democrats to deal with enhanced unemployment.

Unemployment “should be tied to some percentage of wages, the fact that we had a flat number was only an issue of an emergency,” Mnuchin said. “There are cases where people are overpaid, there are cases where people are underpaid. The issue is, we need to come up with an agreement to extend this,” Mnuchin said on ABC News’ “This Week.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Sunday that while “good progress” was made in the talks between the White House and Democrats, they are “not close” to an agreement yet.

That’s not very reassuring for struggling Americans whose unemployment assistance expired last week.

  • Man, 27, dies after inhaling ammonia on fishing vessel

A routine cleaning of a storage well within MV Africa Star, a fishing vessel belonging to the Africa Star Fisheries Limited, has allegedly led to the death of a 27-year-old man, Elvis Otoo, at the Tema Fishing Harbour.

The deceased, an employee of Jamens Limited, a vessel cleaning company, died when a supposed damaged pipe containing ammonia, a refrigerant for the tuna vessel, exploded and trapped him and a colleague, Enoch Teye, 32, in the process.
Otoo was said to have had high exposure to the substance which he inhaled. He also had cuts on the body.
According to an eyewitness, attempts by his colleagues to rescue him were unsuccessful.
Teye, who managed to escape, sustained injuries and was rushed to the Narh-Bita Hospital in Tema where he is said to be receiving treatment while the body of the deceased has been deposited at the International Hospital Mortuary awaiting autopsy.
    Incident
The Head of the Marine Police Unit at the Tema Port, Supt Joseph Antwi-Ababio, told the Daily Graphic yesterday that the incident occurred on Wednesday, July 29, 2020 at about 12:30 p.m.
The vessel, he said, had returned from a voyage on Sunday, July 26, 2020 and began the processes to offload the tuna from the hatches (holding compartments) the following day.
He said Otoo and Teye were tasked to commence the cleaning works in the hatch which had all of its tuna contents emptied, while other workers of African Star offloaded the rest of the tuna from other hatches of the vessel.
Supt. Antwi-Ababio explained that the cleaning of the vessel was to enable it to go on another voyage when the entire contents were fully emptied.
He said during the cleaning the gas leaked into the environment, creating an uncomfortable working environment within the fishing harbour.
“According to an eyewitness account, Otoo could not escape the scene as the substance, apart from causing eye sensation, also came with a pungent smell”,  Supt Antwi-Ababio stated.
    Evidence Tampering
While some workers of the company had alleged that the Chinese owners of the vessel attempted to tamper with evidence of the damaged pipes, the Commander said a technical team from the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) who visited the scene of the incident had tasked the owners to check whether there were any further leakages of the ammonia into other areas of the vessel.
“A proposal was also made for them to attempt to evacuate the ammonia from the other areas to its original holding base to prevent further leakage into the fishing harbour environment,” he said.
Supt Antwi-Ababio stated that the police had no evidence to the claims by the eyewitnesses since it was only the GMA officials who had the technical expertise to determine whether the vessel owners attempted to carry out any repair works on the damaged pipes.
The Deputy Director in charge of Ship Inspections and Maritime Security at the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Captain Emmanuel Kofi Ankamah, who also confirmed the incident, said investigations were ongoing and that the Authority could only comment when they were able to establish the cause of the accident.

  • Neymar: Barcelona president says it is ‘unfeasible’ to sign Brazilian during Covid-19 pandemic

It is “unfeasible” for Barcelona to re-sign Neymar from Paris St-Germain in the current economic climate, says the club’s president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

A move for Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez has also been affected.

Bartomeu told Spanish newspaper Sport that Barca generated 200m Euros less than expected between March and June because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“All the big European clubs are affected,” he said. “This isn’t going to last a year, but three or four.”

Brazilian forward Neymar joined PSG for a world record 222m Euros (£199m) in August 2017 but Barcelona tried to re-sign the player last summer.

“Neymar? In this situation, it’s unfeasible,” said Bartomeu. “Nor does PSG want to sell him.

“Barca have spoken with Inter about Lautaro, but the talks have stopped. The situation doesn’t invite large investments.”

Bartomeu went on to explain that Barcelona lost 200m euros between March and June. He added: “In the 2020-21 season we expected to post 1.1 bn euros, but we’ll have 30% of that.

“If the situation of the pandemic doesn’t improve, there will be no spectators, no museum, no stores open, and money will continue to be lost.

“It forces us to be very rigorous in management: we must review which investments are essential and which can wait.”

Bartomeu also confirmed the club opened up disciplinary proceedings against midfielder Arthur, who is joining Juventus as part of a swap deal with Bosnian midfielder Miralem Pjanic, after he failed to return to the club from holiday.

“We reached the agreement that until the Champions League ended, he would continue playing for Barca. He could help us,” said Bartomeu, who has been Barca president since 2014.

“But he didn’t return from his mini-break so we have opened a file on him.”

  • Why soldiers were sent to Banda – GAF explains

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has explained why it deplored military personnel to the Banda area for the last phase of the mass voters registration exercise.

According to the GAF, the deployment followed a request by the Bono Regional Security Council (REGSEC).

This was because, the two leading political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) were bussing [transporting] people in their numbers to register and that had earlier resulted in a clash which led to the death of one person.

The General Secretary of the NDC, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has been seen in a video on social media complaining about the presence of the military in the Banda area and arguing that soldiers were not supposed to be part of the registration process.

Some reports have suggested the military were preventing non residents and people deemed not to be Ghanaians from registering in the area.

Videos circulating on social media show a number of military personnel questioning registrants at a registration centre.

The video also show the military personnel stopping a vehicle – a truck loaded with people – from crossing into the community.

The flagbearer of the NDC, former President John Dramani Mahama for instance in a post on Facebook at the weekend commented on the issue and accused President Akufo-Addo of discriminate use of the military in the voter registration.

    GAF’s statement

But a statement signed and issued by the Director of Public Relations of the GAF, Colonel E. Aggrey-Quashie, explained that following the reported allegation of registration restrictions being placed on a section of the community in the Banda area by the military, it has become necessary to situate the issue in context and set the record straight.

“The Military wishes to state that on 30th July 2020, the Bono Regional Security Council met representatives of the two main political parties NPP and NDC to deliberate on the peaceful conduct of the registration exercise.

“This was in the wake of the disturbances that resulted in the unfortunate demise of one person.”

The Agreement signed by Mr. Joe Danquah (NPP) and Ahmed Ibrahim (NDC MP – Banda) and witnessed by the Regional Minister stated as follows:

“We the undersigned agreed today to maintain peace in the Banda District during the remaining days of the voters registration exercise and after, until the end of the 2020 General Elections in December 2020.”

The full details of the Agreement were as follows:

    • That the REGSEC will give the necessary security to the Banda Constituency and the entire Region, before, during and after the process of the 7th December Election.
    • The REGSEC and the Electoral Commission and other stakeholders should meet the Chiefs to determine the boundaries of Banda.
    • The two Parliamentary Candidates (Mr. Joe Danquah and Ahmed Ibrahim, MP) should stop bussing people to the registration centres, if indeed they were ordinary residents; they should go there on their own volition.
    • Political parties should educate their agents at the registration centres to fill challenge forms in challenging people whose citizenship or residency they doubted.
    • That no physical violence should be used in preventing people from registering.
    • That the two candidates should pledge their support to ensure peace in the Constituency by signing the Peace Agreement offered by REGSEC.

The statement explained that the security agencies were therefore available to support the REGSEC-brokered Agreement.

No specific ethnic group was targeted in this regard. The general public is accordingly informed of these developments, the GAF said.

  • Infantino staying on as FIFA blasts Swiss probe

FIFA president Gianni Infantino will continue in his post, world football’s governing body insisted Sunday, as they blasted the launch of Swiss criminal proceedings against him.
“There was and is absolutely no reason to open any investigation because nothing remotely criminal has happened and there is nothing at all to suggest any form of criminal wrongdoing,” FIFA said in a media release.

“The FIFA president will continue to fully assume his functions within FIFA and fulfil his duties and will continue to cooperate with the authorities in Switzerland and around the world.”

Special prosecutor Stefan Keller started proceedings on Thursday as part of an investigation into suspected collusion between Infantino and Switzerland’s attorney general Michael Lauber, the country’s top prosecutor.

Lauber, who offered his resignation on July 24, was in charge of Switzerland’s probe into the towering corruption scandal that exploded at the heart of Zurich-based FIFA in 2015.

But he was forced to recuse himself from the investigation in June 2019, following media revelations that he had held several undeclared meetings with Infantino during the probe.

Swiss authorities said Keller “reached the conclusion that… there are indications of criminal conduct” in relation to meetings between Infantino, Lauber and another official, Rinaldo Arnold, in 2016 and 2017.

“This concerns abuse of public office, breach of official secrecy, assisting offenders and incitement to these acts,” the authorities said.

    Categorical denial
FIFA hit back on Sunday, accusing Keller of having brought forward no legal grounds for his probe.

“Keller has presented no serious elements or legal basis for the opening of any investigation and lacks any detail as to the substance of the case.

“FIFA and the FIFA president categorically deny any implication or suggestion that the FIFA president would ever have attempted to exert any form of improper influence” on Lauber.

FIFA said it was “not illegal anywhere in the world” to meet a prosecutor.

It said the meeting between Infantino and Lauber was “entirely logical” given that the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) was conducting investigations in more than 20 cases in FIFA-related matters.

The organisation said such meetings or contacts were “routine” during an investigation.

It said the point of the meeting was to offer FIFA’s “full support” for the investigations, and Infantino attended in “good faith”.

“FIFA was trying to restore trust in the institution at that time,” it said, finding itself “in a disastrous situation and at risk of being designated a criminal organisation by the US authorities”.

FIFA said that “in no way whatsoever” were the meetings secret, and they had been arranged by the OAG.

    No obligation’ to keep minutes
FIFA claimed that meeting a prosecutor was “the best guarantee that any such meeting is legitimate”.

It also insisted there was “no obligation” on the FIFA president to keep minutes of such meetings.

Switzerland has pursued a number of cases since a raid on a luxury hotel in Zurich in May 2015 led to the arrests of a several FIFA executives and exposed an allegedly corrupt underbelly in world football.

In total, more than 20 FIFA proceedings have been opened in Switzerland over the past five years into allegations of corruption and vote-buying, and allegations over the awarding of television rights contracts.

  • Edouard hat-trick helps Celtic start title defence by thrashing Hamilton

Celtic keeping striker Odsonne Edouard is “pivotal” if they are to realise their ambitions this season, says manager Neil Lennon.

Edouard scored a hat-trick as Celtic began their quest for a 10th title in a row with a 5-1 home win over Hamilton.

He tapped in from two crosses, and then pounced on a rebound for his third – as the champions responded to Rangers’ 1-0 win at Aberdeen on Saturday in style.

“We don’t want him to go anywhere,” Lennon said of Frenchman Edouard.

“That’s what’s pleased me over the last 12 to 18 months – his goal return as well as all the other things he brings to the game.

“He’s scoring a lot of goals now and it’s fantastic to see. He would be the first to say it was a real team effort.”

Edouard converted Greg Taylor’s cross before the Scotland left-back laid on a tap-in for right-back Jeremie Frimpong.

Scott Martin’s deflected strike gave Hamilton hope, but Edouard added two more from close range after the break, getting on the end of James Forrest’s cross and then side-footing in after Ryan Christie’s shot was saved.
