  • Kudus Mohammed will need time to adapt in Netherlands – Ajax boss Ten Hag

Ajax coach Erik ten Hag has praised the qualities of summer signing Mohammed Kudus but believes the attacking midfielder will need time to adjust to life in the Dutch top-flight.

The 19-year-old joined Ajax from Danish side FC Nordsjælland on a five-year deal worth 9 million euros.

“Kudus is a multifunctional player, with many European top clubs behind it. He is versatile, has also played in many different positions in Denmark. In rush hour, behind rush hour, as a midfielder, on the flanks,” he said.

He has a similar potential to that we saw in [new signing] Antony, with the important difference that he has been in Europe for some time. He also speaks fluent English. In terms of adjustment, he has a head start, but in both cases, it remains to be seen how much adjustment time they need.”

Kudus is yet to start training with Ajax because of the finalization of some final formalities.

  • Nana Yaw Amponsah to be unveiled as Kotoko CEO Friday

Ghana Premier league club, Asante Kotoko, will on Friday name owner of Phar Rangers FC Nana Yaw Amponsah as the new CEO of the club.

The Porcupine Warriors dissolved their board of directors including the Chief Executive Officer, George Amoako, after the three-year mandate expired this year.

After months of searching, it looks like Kotoko have found Nana Yaw Amponsah capable of leading the club.

Although it was rumoured previously that he will not get the job because he revealed what was supposed to be kept a secret at his vetting to the media, it seems that reason was not strong enough for the position to elude him as the board of directors in consultation with Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has given him the nod.It will be remembered last year that he stood for the Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidential elections and came third amongst six candidates.

Nana Yaw Amponsah will replace Joseph Yaw Adu, who is currently the acting CEO of the club.

  • Tension in the air as CAS fails to deliver much-anticipated GFA-Palmer verdict

There is massive tension in the air after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) failed to deliver the much-anticipated verdict involving Wilfred Kweku Osei “Palmer” and the Ghana Football Association on Tuesday.

The delayed verdict has sparked an uneasy calm for both the appellant and defendant.

Palmer is seeking to overturn last years Ghana FA Presidential election after being disqualified.

The global tribunal body confirmed Tuesday August 4 as the date to announce the verdict to bring to an end a 10-month litigation which has far reaching implication for the administration of football in the West African nation.

While several watchers had been keen on the much-awaited verdict, CAS swerved Ghanaians by refusing to release the final judgment on Tuesday after initial postponement from July 17.

These are frenetic times for the followers of both disqualified Osei and current FA boss Kurt Okraku.

Palmer dragged the FA to the apex of world sports court after he was disqualified from contesting the 2019 Presidential election by the Normalisation Committee.

There are two things likely to happen – CAS to throw out the case and allow the status quo to remain or order for a re-run of the election if it was deemed the plaintiff was unfairly disqualified from the race.

CAS will announce the decision whether to uphold Palmer’s quest to annul the election and order for fresh polls to decide on a new President for the GFA or allow the status quo to remain.

The situation has put the presidency of Kurt Okraku on the line with wide-reaching implications if Palmer becomes successful.

The ruling from CAS will put to rest months of intense anxiety involving all the principal actors.

An initial ruling on July 17, 2020 was postponed to Tuesday August 4, 2020.

  • Albert Commey and Takyi Arhin caught in a ‘big lie’ over CAS ruling claims?

Albert Commey and Takyi Arhin have been caught in a gargantuan imagination after claiming that both the appellant and defendant in the case involving Wilfred Kweku Osei “Palmer” and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) have been served with the Executive Summary of the verdict.

The claim by Commey, the current Chief Executive Officer of Techiman Eleven Wonders and his predecessor Takyi Arhin is turning out to be hoax following further probing by local journalists.

Checks by GHANAsoccernet with both the appellant and the defendant have revealed that no summary verdict has been delivered to the parties.

Indeed, there is no executive summary from the global tribunal to question the bold claims from both Albert Commey and Takyi Arhin.

“Both Palmer and GFA have received the summary of the verdict but it is up to Palmer who is the complainant to release the it to the public,” Albert Commey claimed on Angel FM.

“I will not blame the GFA if they decide hold the verdict because they are not the complainant.”

Given the massive public interest in the case, the claim by Commey and Arhin, who are staunch supporters of current GFA boss Kurt Okraku has surprised many.

  • Obesity not defined by weight, says new Canada guideline

Obesity should be defined by a person’s health – not just their weight, says a new Canadian clinical guideline.

It also advises doctors to go beyond simply recommending diet and exercise.

Instead, they should focus on the root causes of weight gain and take a holistic approach to health.

The guideline, which was published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal on Tuesday, specifically admonished weight-related stigma against patients in the health system.

“The dominant cultural narrative regarding obesity fuels assumptions about personal irresponsibility and lack of willpower and casts blame and shame upon people living with obesity,” the guideline, which is intended to be used by primary care physicians in diagnosing and treating obesity in their daily practice, states.

Ximena Ramos-Salas, the director of research and policy at Obesity Canada and one of the guideline’s authors, said research shows many doctors discriminate against obese patients, and that can lead to worse health outcomes irrespective of their weight.

“Weight bias is not just about believing the wrong thing about obesity,” she told the BBC. “Weight bias actually has an effect on the behaviour of healthcare practitioners.”

The rate of obesity has tripled over the past three decades in Canada, and now about one in four Canadians is obese according to Statistics Canada.

The guideline had not been updated since 2006. The new version was funded by Obesity Canada, the Canadian Association of Bariatric Physicians and Surgeons and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research through a Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research grant.

Although the latest advice still recommends using diagnostic criteria like the body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference, it acknowledges their clinical limitations and says doctors should focus more on how weight impacts a person’s health.

Small reductions in weight, of about 3-5%, can lead to health improvements and an obese person’s “best weight” might not be their “ideal weight” according to BMI, the guideline says.

It emphasises that obesity is a complex, chronic condition that needs lifelong management.

“For a long time we’ve associated obesity as a lifestyle behaviour… It’s been a lot of shame and blame before,” Ms Ramos-Salas says.

“People living with obesity need support like people living with any other chronic disease.”

But instead of simply advising patients to “eat less, move more”, the guideline encourages doctors to provide supports along the lines of psychological therapy, medication and bariatric surgery like gastric-bypass surgery.

The guideline doesn’t completely do away with standard weight-loss advice.

“All individuals, regardless of body size or composition, would benefit from adopting a healthy, well-balanced eating pattern and engaging in regular physical activity,” it says.

However, it notes that keeping the weight off is often difficult because the brain will compensate by feeling more hungry, thus encouraging people to eat more.

Many studies have shown that most people who lose weight on a diet gain it back.

“Diets don’t work,” Ms Ramos-Salas says.

Physicians should also ask permission before discussing a patient’s weight, and work with them to focus on health goals that matter to them, instead of just telling them to cut calories.

  • I’m determined to wean Ghana off export of raw materials – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has on the occasion of the Founders Day celebration on Tuesday, August 4 assured Ghanaians that he will lay a strong foundation that transforms Ghanaians economy.

“We must, as a mark of reverence to our founders, work to free ourselves from the economic arrangements designed by the former colonial power to serve its particular purpose at the time which continues to bind us.

“We must make concerted efforts to break away from the neocolonial structure of the raw material producing and exporting economy which has largely been our lot.

“As president of the republic, I am determined to make the leadership of Ghana the period that witnessed the laying of the foundation for the transformation of our economy from an exporter of raw materials and retailer of cheap imported goods to a modern, value-adding, industrialized one.”

A decent healthcare system, decent jobs, a decent home an adequate safety net for the vulnerable and marginalized, and a decent retirement, and to live in an atmosphere of freedom, security, law and order.”

  • SpaceX: Nasa crew describe rumbles and jolts of return to Earth

Astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley have described the rumbles, heat and jolts of returning from space in the Crew Dragon spacecraft on Sunday.

Behnken vividly described the clouds rushing by the window and jolts that were like being “hit in the back of the chair with a baseball bat”.

But Hurley and Behnken said the spacecraft performed just as expected.

They splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico, ending the first commercial crewed mission to the space station.

“As we descended through the atmosphere, I personally was surprised at just how quickly events all transpired. It seemed like just a couple of minutes later, after the [de-orbit] burns were complete, we could look out the windows and see the clouds rushing by,” he said at a news conference broadcast from Nasa’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

“Once we descended a little bit into the atmosphere, Dragon really came alive. It started to fire thrusters and keep us pointed in the appropriate direction. The atmosphere starts to make noise – you can hear that rumble outside the vehicle. And as the vehicle tries to control, you feel a little bit of that shimmy in your body.

“We could feel those small rolls and pitches and yaws – all those little motions were things we picked up on inside the vehicle.”

As the spacecraft – named Endeavour by its crew – descended through the atmosphere, the rumbles increased in magnitude and the thrusters began to fire continuously. “I did record some audio but it doesn’t sound like a machine, it sounds like an animal,” said Behnken.

During the return from the International Space Station (ISS), the crew module has to separate from a section called the trunk, which has solar panels and heat-removal radiators.

“All the separation events, from the trunk separation through the parachute firings, were very much like getting hit in the back of the chair with a baseball bat,” said Bob Behnken. “Pretty light for the trunk separation but with the parachutes it was a pretty significant jolt.”

Behnken also described feeling some “warming” inside the capsule. He praised the engineers who worked on the Crew Dragon spacecraft: “I can’t say enough about how well the SpaceX team trained us,” he said.

Upon splashdown on Sunday, a flotilla of private boats approached the bobbing Dragon, which came down in the sea off Pensacola, Florida.

They were asked to leave amid concern over hazardous chemicals venting from the capsule’s propulsion system.

“We certainly appreciate the folks wanting to participate in the event, but there are some safety aspects that – as the administrator [Nasa chief Jim Bridenstine] said – we’ll have to take a look at, because it can’t happen like it did before.”

Hurley said they were not aware of the boats while they were sitting in the capsule because of the scorch marks over the windows. “You see it was daylight outside but very little else,” he said.

But reflecting on the historic nature of the mission, Hurley said it “was one of the true honours of my entire life, but certainly my professional career”.

Nasa is handing over the transport of astronauts to and from the ISS to private companies, namely SpaceX and Boeing. Since the retirement of the space shuttle in 2011, the United States has had no vehicle with which to launch astronauts from its soil.

In the intervening years, it has paid Russia tens of millions of dollars per seat to launch US crew members on the Soyuz vehicle.

During the last ever shuttle mission – STS-135 – in 2011, the crew left a US flag on the space station with the intention that the next crew to launch on a US vehicle return it to Earth. Nine years later, Hurley and Behnken have brought back the symbolic item, which also flew on the first shuttle mission in 1981.

  • Ex-Google engineer sentenced for theft – Anthony Levandowski

An ex-engineer for Google’s self-driving car unit has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for trade secret theft shortly before he joined Uber.

US District Judge William Alsup in San Francisco said Anthony Levandowski had carried out the “biggest trade secret crime I have ever seen”.

Levandowski loaded more than 14,000 Google files onto his laptop before leaving the firm in January 2016.

He led Uber’s robocar project, only to be fired in 2017 over this case.

Levandowski filed for bankruptcy in March this year because he owes $179m (£136m) to Google’s parent company, Alphabet, for his actions.

Judge Alsup said “billions [of dollars] in the future were at play, and when those kind of financial incentives are there good people will do terrible things, and that’s what happened here”, reports Reuters news agency.

Levandowski – who was a founding member of Google’s self-driving car project, Waymo – had been hoping for a sentence of 12 months’ confinement at his home in the San Francisco suburbs.

He said he had pneumonia, and could die of coronavirus in prison.

But Judge Alsup said a non-custodial sentence would amount to “a green light to every future brilliant engineer to steal trade secrets”.

He ruled that Levandowski could begin his custodial sentence after the Covid-19 pandemic had peaked.

Prosecutors had recommended a 27-month sentence.

Levandowski, who now runs self-driving truck company Pronto, said in a statement: “Today marks the end of three-and-a-half long years and the beginning of another long road ahead.”

Uber settled a lawsuit from Alphabet over the trade secrets theft, but the dispute between the companies continues.

According to TechCrunch, Levandowski is suing Uber for $4.1bn, stemming from its acquisition of his previous self-driving truck start-up, Otto.

  • Beirut blast: Dozens dead and thousands injured, health minister says

A large blast in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, has killed at least 70 people and injured more than 4,000 others, the health minister says.

Videos show smoke billowing from a fire, then a mushroom cloud following the blast at the city’s port.

Officials are blaming highly explosive materials stored in a warehouse for six years.

President Michel Aoun tweeted it was “unacceptable” that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate was stored unsafely.

An investigation is under way to find the exact trigger for the explosion. Lebanon’s Supreme Defence Council said those responsible would face the “maximum punishment” possible.

Hospitals are said to be overwhelmed and many buildings have been destroyed.

President Aoun declared a three-day mourning period, and said the government would release 100 billion lira (£50.5m; $66m) of emergency funds.

A BBC journalist at the scene reported dead bodies and severe damage, enough to put the port of Beirut out of action.

Prime Minister Hassan Diab called it a catastrophe and said those responsible must be held to account.

He spoke of a “dangerous warehouse” which had been there since 2014, but said he would not pre-empt the investigation.

Local media showed people trapped beneath rubble. A witness described the first explosion as deafening, and video footage showed wrecked cars and blast-damaged buildings.

“All the buildings around here have collapsed. I’m walking through glass and debris everywhere, in the dark,” one witness near the port told AFP news agency.

The blast was heard 240km (150 miles) away on the island of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean.

The explosion comes at a sensitive time for Lebanon, with an economic crisis reigniting old divisions. Tensions are also high ahead of Friday’s verdict in a trial over the killing of ex-Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in 2005.

Disputes not resolved amicably within 90 days of instituting negotiations for the amicable resolution or such other time as the parties may mutually agree, the report indicated, shall be referred to or finally resolved by arbitration in accordance with the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules.

Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee and MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, moving the motion, said the AfCFTA Secretary-General has already been appointed and that the recruitment of four other directors and essential staff were underway.

“Although the Ministry Foreign Affairs could not provide the specific percentage of Ghanaians that would be employed at the secretariat,  the committee was assured that the secretariat would be guided in its recruitment policy to hire the majority of Ghanaians particularly in the general staff category as the practice pertaining in countries hosting AU Organs,” Annoh-Dompreh, told the House.

  • Beirut blast: Lebanon in mourning after massive explosion

Lebanon is in mourning after a huge explosion in the capital Beirut killed at least 78 people and injured more than 4,000 others on Tuesday.

The whole city was shaken by the blast, which began with a fire at the port which exploded into a mushroom cloud.

President Michel Aoun said 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate had been stored unsafely in a warehouse for six years.

He scheduled an urgent cabinet meeting for Wednesday, and said a two-week state of emergency should be declared.

The country will observe an official period of mourning for three days from Wednesday.

President Aoun also announced that the government would release 100 billion lira (£50.5m; $66m) of emergency funds.

“What we are witnessing is a huge catastrophe,” the head of Lebanon’s Red Cross George Kettani told local media. “There are victims and casualties everywhere.”

Officials said on Tuesday that an investigation was under way to find the exact trigger for the explosion. Lebanon’s Supreme Defence Council said those responsible would face the “maximum punishment” possible.

The ammonium nitrate had reportedly been unloaded from a ship impounded at the port in 2013, and then stored in a warehouse there.

The explosion comes at a sensitive time for Lebanon, with an economic crisis reigniting old divisions as the country struggles with the coronavirus crisis. Tensions are also high ahead of Friday’s verdict in a trial over the killing of ex-Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in 2005.

    What happened?

The explosion occurred just after 18:00 (15:00 GMT) on Tuesday. A BBC journalist at the scene reported dead bodies and severe damage, enough to put the port of Beirut out of action.

Local media showed people trapped beneath rubble. A witness described the explosion as deafening, and video footage showed wrecked cars and blast-damaged buildings.

“All the buildings around here have collapsed. I’m walking through glass and debris everywhere, in the dark,” one witness near the port told AFP news agency.

Hospitals were said to be overwhelmed and many buildings were destroyed.

The blast was also felt 240km (150 miles) away on the island of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean, with people there saying they thought it was an earthquake.

  • Court upholds application challenging installation of Osei Bonsu Boateng as chief

A Kumasi high court has upheld an application by the Head of the Bretuo Royal Family of Jamasi, Ashanti, challenging the nomination and installation of Osei Bonsu Boateng, as a chief by the kingmakers.

The plaintiff, Nana Kwasi Sarpong, Head of the Bretuo Royal Family of Jamasi, and on behalf of the members of the family, contended that the nomination and installation of Osei Bonsu Boateng would be a contravention of Article 275 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

It provides that a person shall not be qualified as a chief if he has been convicted for high treason, high crime, or for an offence involving the security of the state, fraud, dishonesty or moral turpitude.

Defendants include Dasebre Osei Bonsu, Paramount Chief and President of the Mampong Traditional Council (First Defendant), Nana Brefo Gyedu Kotowko II, Gyasehene of Jamasi (Second Defendant) and Osei Bonsu Boateng (Third Defendant).

The defendants had prayed the High Court presided over by Mr Justice Akwasi Dapaa to dismiss the motion filed at the court by the plaintiff on grounds of wants of jurisdiction.

They said that “looking at the endorsement on the writ of summons and the averments contained in the statement of claim, the suit is a cause or matter affecting chieftaincy which lies to the chieftaincy tribunals or committees.”

Justice Dapaa in his ruling on February 3, this year, said, “I will refuse the motion for an order dismissing the action as being one affecting chieftaincy and sustain the action for trial on the merits. The motion is dismissed, the suit shall take its course.”

The defendant/applicant shall pay an amount of GH¢2,000 to the plaintiff/ respondent.

Kevin-Prince Boateng reiterated his desire to return to Hertha Berlin to end his career, but the current boss of the side Bruno Labbadia has disclosed that he may not need the services of the Ghanaian.

Born in Germany, the attacker together with his brother Jerome Boateng started their careers with the Bundesliga outfit and spent over a decade at the club.

After an illustrious career that has seen KP Boateng playing in almost all the top-flight leagues in the major European Leagues, the 33-year-old relished a return to the Berlin-based club.

However, his dreams of ending his career at Hertha Berlin have been shattered as the club looks forward to building a long-term project with the recruitment of youth stars in the near future.

  • 7 Nigerian illegal immigrants to be quarantined for 2 weeks

The seven Nigerians, who were arrested in Ho last Tuesday, by personnel of the Revenue Assets and Border Protection Unit after they entered Ghana through an unapproved route near Aflao, in the Volta Region, will be quarantined for two weeks, according to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).

“We will send them to a facility in Aflao where they will be isolated over the period,” said Deputy Commissioner of Immigration (DCI) in-charge of the Volta Region, Peter Claver Nantuo.

He said that the illegal immigrants would first be quizzed to ascertain how they gained access into the country through the unapproved route.

The suspects are Nwanku Mathew, 21, John Paul Achebe, 22, Dominic Sylvester, 20, Chukwubua Malachy, 27, Osinchi Kawase, 30, Destiny John, 31 and Bishop Pascal, 37.

DCI Nantuo said that the service was also making efforts to trace possible contacts of the suspects in Ghana, adding that, “For all you know they have friends and relatives here, who invited them to come over, and we need to look into that”.

Meanwhile, DCI Nantuo revealed that the GIS command in the region now had the powers to prosecute illegal immigrants.

“That means deportation is not the only option, we have in respect of people, who cross into the country without lawful authority; we can also try them at the law courts,” he explained.

In respect of the Nigerians, DCI Natuo said that the appropriate decision would be taken after investigations were concluded.

According to him, there were indications that they flouted the border closure with assistance from some cross-border transport operators.

The regional GIS commander warned that any unruly person, who violated the closure of the frontier, and crossed it into Ghana or attempted to cross out of Ghana would suffer swift and ruthless consequences.

After the Nigerians crossed into the Ghana side of the border, personnel of the Revenue Assets and Border Protection Unit of the Office of the President, trailed them to the lorry station at Aflao where they boarded a Ho-bound commercial vehicle.

Personnel of the unit used their duty vehicle to pursue the commercial vehicle and caught up with it at the Mile 48 Barrier in Ho.

The Nigerians were nabbed and handed over to the Ho police who later handed them over to the GIS.

    Investigations continue.

  • Suspense as journalists besiege residence of Wilfred Osei Palmer awaiting CAS ‘verdict’

Dozens of Ghanaian journalists have laid siege at the Tema home of football administrator Wilfred Osei Palmer awaiting his official reaction to the verdict of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in his case against the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

However, as at 20:15 GMT (8:15pm local time), the vedict from CAS had not been made public. This situation has further heightened tension and uncertainty over the outcome of the Palmer’s legal action.

The club owner and business magnate is basically seeking a re-run of the 2019 GFA Presidential elections and a clean slate of eligibility for him to contest the seat.

For a man many pundits believed was finished in Ghana football, Mr Palmer has shown remarkable grit, focus and determination to remain relevant and instrumental in the affairs of the game.

Interestingly, the President of the GFA Kurt Okraku, has remained calm and focused in the execution of his duties since the impasse.

Mr Okraku, speaking on Accra based media netoworks Max FM and Max TV said he is ready to accept the CAS ruling and has no issues with the appellant.

Meanwhile in what is seen as a spicy talking point, the brother of the FA President, Derrick Okraku, has cast doubts on the chances of a Palmer victory.

“For me, it is a pretty straight forward one and I will be shocked to see things go the other way round not because I may be close to the FA but from what I have read, I will be surprised to see the verdict come in favour of the appellant,”

    A confident Derrick Okraku further added that Ghana football is going through a necessary learning curve;

“It will be a learning point for me to know what interpretation was applied differently from what I expected, but in the courts, things can happen.”

Palmer was disqualified by the Ghana Football Normalization Committee on “integrity” issues.

In related news, one of GFA Presidential candidates Nana Yaw Amponsah is expected to be unveiled as the new CEO of Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

Another candidate, Amanda Clinton is scheduled be on Max Fm and Max TV at 3pm on Wednesday 5th August for what will surely be a revealing interview with host Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

  • Day of intense speculation as CAS misses its own date for GFA-Palmer verdict

The failure of Court of Arbitration for Sport to deliver a ruling on Wilfred Kwaku Osei‘s disqualification on Tuesday, 4 August, 2020 caused intense speculation in the west African country.

The local media had planned programmes around the ruling which has far reaching implications for both parties.

These are frenetic times for the followers of both disqualified Osei and current FA boss Kurt Okraku.

The Executive Council members are on the edge too.

An initial ruling on July 17, 2020 was postponed to Tuesday August 4, 2020

  • Gold price rises above $2,000 for first time

Gold has topped $2,000 (£1,527) an ounce for the first time as traders look for havens amid the pandemic.

Investors have moved cash into the precious metal as Covid-19 cases rise in the US and more money is pumped into the global economy.

The record high gold price has also been driven by concerns over tensions between Washington and Beijing.

Prices of other precious metals, including silver, have also risen sharply since the start of this year.

The price of gold has increased by more than 30% this year as coronavirus cases continue to rise in America, causing dozens of states to halt or reverse their plans to reopen.

The rapid rise in cases, which has dented hopes of a swift US economic recovery, has also helped to drive up the price of silver by around a third this year.

Among the reasons for those rises is investors preparing themselves for a possible pick-up in inflation due to the impact of trillions of dollars of stimulus from governments and central banks around the world.

In Washington, Trump administration negotiators have said that they will work “around the clock” with Democrats as they attempt to strike a deal on more economic relief measures by the end of the week.

According to Bank of America, governments around the world have already announced approximately $20tn worth of stimulus to combat the economic impact of the pandemic.

Some investors see the fallout from the Covid-19 crisis, along with ongoing tensions between the US and China, continuing to push up the price of gold.

Market strategist Margaret Yang says she sees potential for bullion to continue rising in the coming weeks and months: “The mid-to-long-term prospect of gold and other precious metals remains bullish against the backdrop of low interest rate environment and fiscal and monetary stimulus.”

Peter McGuire from XM.com said he sees gold reaching “$2,200 by Christmas” with silver, platinum and palladium also set to see strong gains.

  • Digital transaction, a necessity in post coronavirus – AGI Chairperson

Mrs Kate Quartey-Papafio, Sector Chairperson, Electricals and Electronics, Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), has asked businesses to do aggressive branding and enhanced digital marketing transaction for higher visibility and continuity in a post coronavirus era.

Mrs Papafio said since the outbreak of COVID-19, face-to-face business transaction had become difficult and called on businesses to explore and maximize the benefit of online transactions to remain competitive in the emerging world of business.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra on the impact of the pandemic on businesses, Mrs Papafio said creating a website was no longer a luxury for businesses since the COVID-19 pandemic had brought about changing trends of which demanded companies to take advantage of all digital platforms for their growth.

She emphasized that a transformed consumer would now opt for online shopping and delivery services as opposed to the traditional and physical walk-ins, urging businesses to quickly migrate to online transactions to meet customers’ needs and as well minimized the level of human interaction.

Additionally, she encouraged captains of industry with the relevant capacities, to employ the use of Intelligence Automation and Robotic Process Automation, an accelerated digital transformation that would better improve their ability to meet the high demands of consumers.

She stated that digitisation in micro and small businesses was an effective platform for companies to create their our own ‘Alibaba’ and ‘Amazon’ space for the continent and the global market at large.

“The growth of SMEs in post-COVID-19 will be heavily reliant on change in trade behaviour, change in delivery model, change in global sourcing and change in their unstructured nature. The consumer is now constantly processing what is and what is not essential at any point in time,” she added.

According to her, the SME must identify and understand the dynamics of this paradigm shift to survive and thrive in post-Covid-19, leading to sustained growth.

She noted that the underlying principle for the growth of SMEs was to ensure a holistic transformation to match the corresponding change in the socio-economic and environmental situations.

  • Forest fire in southern France triggers evacuations

A forest fire Tuesday ravaged 800 hectares of vegetation near the southern French city of Marseille, forcing the evacuation of over 200 people, officials said. There were no casualties thus far from the blaze that broke out west of Marseille, as 1,200 firefighters and water bombing planes were deployed to fight the flames.

Some 225 people, mostly tourists and campers, were evacuated by boat to a nearby fishing village and then taken by bus to makeshift shelters in the town of Martigues.

“We are braced for a difficult fight throughout the night,” said a spokesman for the firefighting service in the Bouches du Rhone department.

The fire broke out in the afternoon, sending out plumes of black smoke. It crossed eight kilometres in two hours, fanned by strong winds, the firefighting service said.

Seven water-dumping planes and a number of helicopters and other aircraft were deployed to back up 1,200 firefighters, officials said.

“We were in Martigues for shopping but now we cannot enter our home in La Couronne. All the roads have been cut off and the fire’s burning everywhere,” said Mylene Greffeuille.

“We’re very worried because my father is old and he is La Couronne,” near the fire, she said.

Part of a highway from Marseille to Martigues has been closed.

  • Beirut blast: Explosion rocks city injuring many

A large blast has hit the Lebanese capital, Beirut, causing widespread damage and injuring many people, officials say.

Reports say the explosion was in the port area of the city, with unconfirmed reports of a second blast. It is not clear what caused them.

Video posted online showed a large mushroom cloud and destroyed buildings.

It comes at a sensitive time, ahead of the verdict in a trial over the killing of ex-PM Rafik Hariri in 2005.

A UN tribunal is due to issue its verdict in the trial of four suspects in the murder by car bomb of Hariri on Friday.

The possible second explosion was reported to be at the Hariri residence in the city.

Lebanon’s health minister, Hamad Hasan, has spoken of many injuries and extensive damage.

Local media showed people trapped beneath rubble. A witness described the first explosion as deafening. Video footage showed wrecked cars and blast-damaged buildings.

The latest reports come amid political tension in Lebanon, with street demonstrations against the government’s handling the worst economic crisis since the 1975-1990 civil war.

There has also been tension on the border with Israel, which said last week that it had thwarted an attempt by Hezbollah to infiltrate Israeli territory.

    What’s the Hariri case about?

On the morning of 14 February 2005, Rafik Hariri – then an MP who aligned himself with the opposition in parliament – was travelling in a motorcade when the explosion went off in a busy area full of hotels and banks, causing widespread damage.

Mr Hariri had been one of Lebanon’s most prominent Sunni politicians and, at the time of his death, had joined calls for Syria to withdraw troops which had been in Lebanon since 1976 following the start of the civil war.

The killing brought tens of thousands of demonstrators on to the streets in protest against the pro-Syrian government, with the finger of blame for the assassination pointed at Lebanon’s heavily influential neighbour.

Within two weeks the government resigned and weeks after that, Syria withdrew its forces.

After collecting evidence, the UN and Lebanon set up the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) in The Hague in 2007 to investigate the bombing, and ultimately charged four suspects of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group with terrorism, murder and attempted murder.

A fifth man linked to the attack, Hezbollah military commander Mustafa Amine Badreddine, was killed in Syria in 2016.

Hezbollah’s supporters have dismissed the trial, suggesting that the STL process is not politically neutral.

  • France could lose control of virus spread – Science Council

France could “at any moment” lose control over the spread of the Coronavirus, the government’s COVID-19 scientific council warned Tuesday as official data showed the first rise in intensive care patients since April.

In an opinion prepared for policy-makers, the council warned “the virus has recently been circulating more actively, with an increased loss of distancing and barrier measures” since France emerged from a strict two-month lockdown in May.

“The balance is fragile and we can change course at any time to a less controlled scenario like in Spain, for example,” it said.

And the council warned of a possible “resumption of circulation of the virus at a high level” by autumn 2020, after the August summer holidays.

In the short term, retaining control is largely in the hands of citizens, it said.

The message was underscored by President Emmanuel Macron who urged the French public on Tuesday to remain “vigilant” and continue applying anti-infection measures such as keeping a safe distance from others, regular hand-washing, and wearing masks in public spaces.

Data released by the health department on Monday showed the number of people in intensive care had risen by 13 over the weekend, breaking a downward trend observed since April, when the country was under strict stay-at-home orders to curb the spread of the virus.

Twenty-nine new deaths were reported over the same period, bringing the country’s toll to 30,294.

At the height of the outbreak in April, more than 7,100 people were at one point receiving intensive care in French hospitals, which had 5,000 intensive care beds available when the crisis hit.

The country registered thousands of confirmed new infections last week, prompting some cities and regions to impose local restrictions amid reports of people ignoring social distancing and public mask-wearing guidelines.

    ‘Probable second wave’

The rate of confirmed infections has exceeded 1,000 per day since late July.

Prime Minister Jean Castex on Monday urged France “not to let down its guard” in order to prevent a new national lockdown.

“We are seeing an increase in the figures for the epidemic which should make us more attentive than ever,” Castex said.

“I call on every French person to remain very vigilant. The fight against the virus depends of course on the state, local communities, institutions, but also on each of us,” he added.

The southern city of Toulouse joined the ranks of local authorities Tuesday taking steps to oblige people to wear masks outdoors in certain situations, on top of the national requirement to cover up in shops and other shared spaces indoors.

The science council said the government’s response to a “probable second wave” of coronavirus infections will have to be different to the first.

It urged the authorities to put in place “prevention plans” for the France’s largest and most densely-populated metropolitan areas, with localised home-confinement strategies to be tightened or loosened in step with epidemic development.

Yonathan Freund, an emergency doctor at Paris’s Pitie-Salpetriere hospital, is among experts to caution against over-reacting.

“The situation in France today does not justify saying there has been a worsening,” he told AFP.

“If there are 1,000 cases per day, it is because the virus is still in circulation, and it is normal,” he said.

And epidemiologist Antoine Flahault said the focus of authorities seems to have shifted from preventing another run on hospital beds – an acceptable risk approach – to suppressing virus circulation to the lowest possible level, or a doctrine of “zero risk”.

  • Coronavirus: Avoid tariff and nontariff barriers to trade IMF

The External Sector Report of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said policy efforts in the near term should continue to focus on providing lifelines and promoting economic recovery.

The report said countries with flexible exchange rates would benefit from continuing to allow them to adjust in response to external conditions, where feasible.

“Foreign exchange intervention, where needed and where reserves are adequate, could help alleviate disorderly market conditions. For economies facing disruptive balance of payments pressures and without access to private external financing, official financing and swap lines can help provide economic relief and preserve critical health care spending,” it stated.

It added: “Tariff and nontariff barriers to trade should be avoided, especially on medical equipment and supplies, and recent new restrictions on trade rolled back. Using tariffs to target bilateral trade balances is costly for trade and growth, and tends to trigger offsetting currency movements.

“Tariffs are also generally ineffective for reducing excess external imbalances and currency misalignments, which requires addressing underlying macroeconomic and structural distortions. Modernizing the multilateral rules-based trading system and strengthening rules on subsidies and technology transfer is warranted, including by expanding the rule book on services and e-commerce and ensuring a well-functioning WTO dispute settlement system.

“Over the medium term, reducing excess imbalances in the global economy will require joint efforts on the part of both excess surplus and excess deficit countries. Economic and policy distortions that predated the COVID-19 crisis might persist or worsen, suggesting the need for reforms tailored to country-specific circumstances.

“In economies where excess current account deficits before the crisis reflected larger-than-desirable fiscal deficits (as in the United States) and where such imbalances persist, fiscal consolidation over the medium term would promote debt sustainability, reduce the excess current account gap, and facilitate raising international reserves where needed (as in Argentina). Countries with export competitiveness challenges would benefit from productivity-raising reforms.

“In economies where excess current account surpluses that existed before the crisis persist, prioritizing reforms that encourage investment and discourage excessive private saving are warranted.

“In economies with remaining fiscal space, a growth-oriented fiscal policy would strengthen economic resilience and narrow the excess current account surplus. In some cases, reforms to discourage excessive precautionary saving may also be warranted (as in Thailand and Malaysia) including by expanding the social safety net.”

  • Voter card: One Nigerian jailed, 5 others being prosecuted for registering EC

A Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr Bossman Eric Asare, has revealed that a Nigerian has been successfully prosecuted and jailed by Ghanaian authorities for registering for the voter ID card in the near-ending registration exercise being undertaken by the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

Also, five other Nigerians are being prosecuted for the same crime.

Addressing journalists in Accra on Monday, 3 August 2020, Dr Bossman Asare warned Ghanaians who guarantee for foreigners to desist from doing so because the law will come after them.

He explained that applicants who wish to register but do not have a passport or Ghana card can use the guarantor system, adding that a registered voter can guarantee for, at most 10 applicants.

“According to CI 126 (Regulation 1), guaranteeing for more than 10 applicants is unlawful. Guarantors should, therefore, desist from such an act”, he noted.

Also, Dr Asare noted, “Guarantors should make sure they know the nationalities of the applicants they are guaranteeing for”.

“In the event those you guarantee for are not qualified, guarantors will also be held accountable for perjury”, he warned.

“Do not guarantee for strangers. The details of guarantors are captured in our database, so, it is important that you know the persons you are guaranteeing for”, he cautioned.

He noted that foreigners are prohibited from taking part in the registration exercise.

“We have noticed disturbing reports since last week (phase 5) where Ghanaians, who have registered, will front for people of other nationalities to register. These are largely concentrated in border towns but there are some in other places, too.

“It is a crime to guarantee for foreigners to register and vote. Again, if you are a guarantor, it is incumbent on you to know the nationalities of the people you are guaranteeing for”, he stressed.

“Foreigners who are caught trying to register will be prosecuted”, he warned.

“An example is the Nigerian who was arrested and sentenced on Wednesday, 29 July 2020 by the Kaneshie District Court to a six-month imprisonment with hard labour for attempting to register at the Swag Club House in the Ablekuma West District.

“The Police are searching for the two guarantors who filled the form to guarantee for him.

“We understand they are on the run. Nonetheless, their names are with the Police. We will also discuss with our Lawyers to know what actions the Commission can take against the two guarantors”, he noted.

Additionally, he said: “We also know of five Nigeriens who have made their first appearance at the same court for attempting to register and thus acquire the voter ID card”.

The EC Deputy Chair urged political parties and their activists to “desist from encouraging foreigners to take part in the registration exercise”.

“We are equally beseeching our registration officials to ensure that all those they attend to qualify to register under the 1992 Republican Constitution (Article 42) and CI 91(Regulation 1(1a)). If you are a foreigner stay away from the registration centres”.

  • Zimbabwe VP named health minister after Coronavirus scandal

Zimbabwe’s Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga has been appointed as health minister, about a month after the ministry was rocked by a scandal surrounding the procurement of coronavirus tests and equipment.

Mr Chimwenga is a former head of the army who led the military takeover from former President Robert Mugabe.

His predecessor at the health ministry, Obadiah Moyo, appeared in court in June over corruption charges related to a $20m (£16m) contract awarded to a Hungary-registered firm, allegedly without going through proper processes.

    He was granted bail.

“President Mnangagwa has noted the urgency needed to stabilise the health delivery system in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic where the country has registered an acute surge of cases,” a statement from the presidency on Tuesday said.

Zimbabwe has confirmed nearly 4,200 coronavirus cases, including 81 deaths, but the actual number of cases is thought to be higher.

  • Letter from Africa: How African generosity dried a crying teacher’s tears

In our series of letters from African journalists, Kenyan Joseph Warungu looks at the acts of generosity helping ordinary people through desperately trying times.

When Covid-19 hit Africa, the effects were devastating – but some people have been crushed more than others, by the illness but also by the measures to deal with it.

Private-school teachers, who make up a significant amount of the education workforce, have been particularly hard hit by school closures as they have no safety net and in most cases no firm return date either.

Many have turned to farming, cleaning and street hawking in the meantime.

    ‘Don’t cry, it’s ok’
The strain has become unbearable, moving many to tears – among them Akindele Oluwasheun Oladipupo in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja.

He and other teachers were full of hope in July when the Nigerian government said it would allow schools to reopen for exams. But when that decision was reversed, the pain was too much.

Akindele, who is married with three children under eight years, told me in a telephone interview that he just sat in shock digesting the news, before tears ran down his face.

“My wife said to me, ‘Don’t cry, it’s ok, we’ll manage, somehow.’ But I was thinking of the many teachers who have nothing to feed their families. In many cases, both wife and husband are teachers. That’s the entire family income gone – indefinitely.”

Unable to bear his own and other teachers’ burdens, he turned to his mobile phone and poured out his sorrow.

A friend saw the video recording and urged him to post it online. It went viral, earning him the nickname of “the crying teacher”.

Akindele says he filmed it in the hope of encouraging people to help other private-school teachers in need.

Nigerian journalist Lara Wise launched a Facebook campaign to find Akindele and urged him to post a second clip with his account details. Donations poured in from around the world.

Overwhelmed by the generosity, Akindele decided to re-direct the more than 1.2m naira ($3,100; £2,400) to dozens of needy teachers.

“I said to myself – now that God has tested me and has opened a way for the money to come in, if I should sit on that money, it means I’m sitting on the destiny of my children.

“That’s how we started looking for teachers who were struggling. We reached out to more than 200 teachers and gave them enough foodstuff including rice, spaghetti. We also put some money in envelopes and gave it them.”

It is only when Akindele started to distribute relief packages that he realised the scale of the problem. Many teachers from different parts of Nigeria sought help from him.

“It was really difficult seeing elderly teachers who had given many years of service to the profession pleading for food.”

Facebook was full of comments lauding the crying teacher while also castigating the government for ignoring the plight of private-school teachers.

    ‘God bless Akindele’
One Nigerian said: “Shame on the politicians who eat this country dry. If a man who receives grace from God can do all this, all those men in agbadas (flowing robes) and those women hiding under [social media] filters, should bury their faces in shame.”

“God bless Akindele immensely,” wrote another. “May God remember and help many who are ashamed to cry out publicly… who are dying in silence.”

Apart from the selfless acts of frontline workers, especially health professionals who are saving lives during the pandemic, many people across the continent are coping through the generosity of ordinary Africans.

As he waits to see if the new school reopening date of late August will materialise, Akindele tells me this spirit of ubuntu – a common humanity and shared responsibility – shocked him.

“Africans are great people. That’s what I’ve seen in these past three weeks,” he says.

“People I’ve never met in my life – they don’t know me, they don’t know where I come from, they don’t know if I’m a scammer or fraudster – but they have been sending money to my account. I’m very grateful to them all.”

    ‘My suffering sparked empathy’
In Kenya, Michael Munene has also been praised for his spirit of giving during the pandemic.

Brought up in a poor family that could hardly afford one meal a day, he knows how hunger and poverty feels. When he started out in life working odd jobs he kept falling behind on rent.

He told me of the incident that unexpectedly sparked ubuntu in him.

“Early one morning my landlord waited for me to use the bathroom, which was outside the house, and quickly locked me out of his house because of rent arrears.

“Stuck outside with no clothes and no money, I swore to himself I would never let anyone else suffer such humiliation.”

Today Michael is a landlord renting to nearly 30 tenants. When their incomes shrank he gave them a payment holiday on their rent, which they have not had to pay since May.

“It’s tough for my business but I can’t bear the sight of homelessness. I’ve told my tenants that for now they should just focus on finding food for their families.”

In Ghana’s capital, Accra, when the lockdown was announced, Elizabeth Yawson’s thoughts turned to the vulnerable living on the streets.

When the radio journalist launched an online campaign to help homeless people, the response was enthusiastic.

“People responded generously and we were able to feed about 100 people for one week.

“I later got the support of two restaurants and we reached out to 30 health workers at a hospital in Kasoa, in the central region of Ghana, giving them free lunch for a whole week.”

What Akindele, Michael and Elizabeth have shown is that although the cock belongs to one household, when it crows it is heard in the whole village.

News of their deeds and others like them have stirred many souls across the continent.

  • Secondary schools reopen in Nigeria

Secondary schools in Nigeria reopened on Tuesday for classes almost four months after they closed to halt the spread of coronavirus.

Final-year students now have just two weeks to prepare for their exams.

There are indications the government may be using this reopening to test-run the system for possibly opening all schools in Nigeria.

It will be recalled that the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Programme was launched on 7th May 2019, in Koforidua, with its main goal being to improve urban management and basic urban services in the twenty-five (25) participating Municipal Assemblies across the country.

Cutting the sod for construction of the drainage project on Tuesday, 4th August 2020, President Akufo-Addo noted that the New Juaben Municipal Assembly has identified flooding as a major risk to the lives and livelihoods of persons living in Nsukwao, Zongo, Two Streams, Abongri and other communities within the municipality.

Nsukwao, the community in which the project will be situated, has since 2016 recorded, annually, incidents of flooding, which have rendered most residents homeless.

  • Calm returns after clashes in Banda

There is relative calm at Akayakrom in the Banda Constituency in the Bono Region following clashes in the community this morning.

The confusion was orchestrated by some alleged thugs who stormed the Funeral Ground registration centre at Akayakrom and terrorised prospective registrants.

The melee forced officials of the Electoral Commission to temporarily halt the on-going voter registration exercise for some time.

Confirming the incident, the Assembly Member for the Bui Electoral Area, Amos Gbortse Kokoti, told Ghanaweb that the thugs dressed in full military gear, stormed the community from nowhere and unleashed mayhem on residents.

He revealed that, it has been the situation in the community since the registration exercise started forcing the residents to live in fear.

According to Honourable Gbortse Kokoti, it has become a norm for the said thugs, numbering over thirty, to storm the polling station early in the morning just to disrupt the process and instil fear in the people.

He rubbished claims in the media that those being prevented from registering are not Ghanaians and challenged such people to come to the community and verify issues first hand.

“That has been the trend since the registration exercise commenced in this community. People have been brutalised by these thugs without any provocation under the guise that they are not Ghanaians. It is sad but that is our situation in this community”.

He, however, revealed that calm has been restored to the area and praised the security personnel for the timely intervention.

Another resident of Akayakrom who identified himself only as Mawuli, also described how the thugs have been terrorising potential registrants aimed at preventing them from registering.

Mawuli averred that even though that has been the trend since the process started in the community, the security operatives have been able to restore order.

“This morning it was not easy at all as some thugs stormed the community and started harassing people who had queued to register. The situation was scary in the morning but it is okay now.”

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of fuelling the confusion in the Banda Constituency.

  • Instant justice deserves ‘instant halting’ – Sisters Keepers to Gonja chiefs

A non profit women’s charity group, Sisters Keepers, has called on the traditional authority in East Gonja to sanction any group or individual that will take the laws into their own hands to seek instant justice.

According to the group, mob action as a method of punishing ‘offenders’ is unacceptable and that people who involved themselves in the act ought to be halted before the court to face full rigorous of the laws.

The group made this call when they visited the bereaved family of the 90-year-old woman, Skua Denteh, who was lynched in Kafaba, to commiserate with them.

They condemned the act of subjecting the aged, especially old women to abuses and torture.

The lynching of Akua Denteh has met with both local and international condemnation.

While in Kafaba, the Charity Director of the Ghana Chapter of the Sisters Keepers Association, Hajia Fauzia Karim appealed to the traditional overlord of the area to sanction persons who take the laws into their own hands to abuse their fellow humans.

“Traditional authorities have a key role to play in this fight and for us as an organization, we believe it is time for the overlord of the area to put in place severe sanctions for those who abuse women be it their family orr not”, she said.

“At a certain age, dementia sets in and one behaves strangely which many misconstrued for witchery”, Hajia Fauzia said.

The team then visited the Kpembewura Banbagne Ndefeso IV at his palace in Kpembe.
