  • We want young players – Hertha Berlin coach on Boateng links

Hertha Berlin coach, Bruno Labbadia, has poured cold water on the Kevin-Prince Boateng reports, signalling the intention of the club to recruit younger players.

Boateng has made his return to Fiorentina after playing for Besiktas on loan in 2020. It was reported that he was interested in a return to Hertha Berlin.

The coach, however, clearly stated that he is looking at recruiting players far younger than the 33-year-old midfielder.

“Kevin Prince Boateng has quality, there’s no doubt about that. However, we want to build the staff of the coming years. This is a very important strategy for us. That’s why we’re focused on the transfer of young players,” he told the German media.

It remains to be seen if the Ghanaian stays at Fiorentina for next season.

  • Premier League clubs vote against retaining five subs rule

Premier League clubs voted against continuing to allow five substitutes for the 2020/21 season on Thursday.

Following the resumption of the 2019/20 campaign after the coronavirus shutdown, clubs were allowed to name nine substitutes and make five changes during matches to support player welfare.

Some clubs wanted the new regulation carried over but the Premier League confirmed they were voted down at Thursday’s annual general meeting, held virtually.

All 20 members also backed changes to the video assistant referee as the system is to fall in line with FIFA protocol.

“At the Premier League’s annual general meeting today, shareholders agreed to rules relating to VAR and substitute players for the 2020/21 season,” the statement said.

“Shareholders unanimously approved the implementation of VAR, in line with the full FIFA VAR protocol.

“Clubs also agreed to revert to using up to three substitute players per match, with a maximum of seven substitutes on the bench.”

The VAR changes come as FIFA aims to have a unified approach to its implementation.

There was controversy in several Premier League games during the season, with the new protocols agreed upon unanimously.

The changes will see referees use the pitch-side review area more often, with the Premier League now also using VAR to spot goalkeeper encroachment on penalties, while assistant referees have been told to keep their flag down for marginal offside calls until the attacking move has played out.

  • Kurt Okraku will maintain his GFA presidency for the next four years – Takyi Arhin

Former CEO of Eleven Wonders, Takyi Arhinm believes that Ghana Football Association President, Kurt Okraku will maintain his Presidency when the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) brings their final verdict on the case between the association and Wilfred Osei Kweku Palmer.

The tribunal was expected to announce the outcome of what has been a prolonged challenge, having rescheduled the date of their ultimate decision from July 17 to August 4.

Palmer dragged the national football’s governing body to CAF over the displeasure of being “unfairly” disqualified from the GFA’s presidential election in October last year.

But according to Takyi Arhin, Kurt Okraku will maintain his status as the GFA president when the final verdict is released on September 1.

“Nothing will change,” Takyi Arhin said. “Kurt Okraku will maintain his status as the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) when CAS finally release the verdict.

“We have all seen the good works Kurt Okraku is doing and I am convinced the status quo will remain the same,” he added.

  • Kotey not surprised Ghanaian referees are omitted from 2022 World Cup list

Referees manager for the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Alex Kotey, says it is no surprise that no Ghanaian referee was included in the FIFA pre-selection list for Africa referees to officiate in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The list released last Monday had referees from Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Senegal, Ethiopia and DR Congo and for him these countries present some of the best knights of the whistle.

“Ghana at the moment is not playing football and also for the past two seasons our league has gone through some turbulence. The Anas Number 12 exposé has robbed us of any chance of getting a representation at that high level, at least for the next decade.”

Speaking to the Times Sports yesterday, the former referee said getting referees to go that high “does not come easy at all and it would take a very long time to make that mark if Ghanaians do not come together to help buildup our referees to that height.”

“We are our own enemies; we had great prospects before that Anas Number 12 exposé who were steadily climbing to the pinnacle of the trade. Again as a country we go about bastardising what we have, insulting them and passing negative verdicts on them at the least opportunity.

“With this, do you expect FIFA to appoint referees we have destroyed to the World Cup? These are some of the factors derailing the progress of refereeing here in Ghana and the earlier we nip in the bud such attitude, the better it would be for us as a country.”

According to him, the new crop of FIFA referees the nation has are just two years old on the FIFA list and they would need at least seven years with high standards and great attitude to be in a good position to be at the Mundial.

“The number of years on the FIFA list is a very big factor in making it to the Mundial. Referees who have been on the list for seven years plus stand a good chance of being picked for such a big tournament.

“Thus, we have a very long way to go if we are to see a Ghanaian at that stage,” he added.

He made mention of Daniel Laryea as the only Ghanaian referee close to making the mark, but he is only five years on the list.

“For now, as Ghanaians we need to shift our way of handling refereeing situations in the country to one of positive if we wish to see them fly high the flag of Ghana at the World Cup.”

  • A lottery prize winner got her check from a robot because the pandemic

Due to the global coronavirus pandemic, claiming your millions in the Canadian lottery just became much more unexpected.

For the first time in Quebec’s lottery history, a winner was handed a $6 million check from a life-sized robot built by college students, according to lottery officials.

After 25 years of playing the same lucky numbers, Guylaine Desjardins, a resident of Laurentides, won the July 1 Lotto 6/49 drawing. The new multimillionaire bought the lottery ticket at her workplace using the numbers 1, 12, 27, 30, 34, 49 and bonus number 35.

It took Desjardins several days to even realize she was holding on to a $6 million winning ticket, according to a news release from Loto-Quebec.
“Wait, let me go get my glasses!” she told lottery officials, when she realized she won.
It costs $3 a ticket to play the Canada-wide lottery game that started in 1982. The odds of hitting a jackpot are 1 in nearly 14 million, according to Loto-Quebec.

As health officals have mandated social distancing to curb the spread of the virus, Desjardins wasn’t able to receive her prize money like the winners before her. Therefore, lottery officials got creative in finding a safe way to present the winner with her winnings.

In an effort to adhere to public health guidelines, the ceremony held on July 23 was streamed live on Facebook and those in attendance wore masks and maintained a physical distance — all except for the virus immune robot named SARA.

SARA, an automated robotic assistance system, was built and designed in partnership by students at the University of Quebec’s school of engineering and Centech, a non-profit that supports technology startups. Students from the engineering school’s Walking Machine club controlled the robot at the prize payout ceremony held at the Casino.
“A great experience and a well-deserved outing for our robot who was alone since the beginning of the quarantine!” the Walking Machine club posted on Facebook.

The lucky winner plans to use her newfound riches to buy herself a three-wheel motorcycle, spoil her two sons and travel once pandemic safety guidelines are lifted.

The convenience store, Dépanneur Lacelle, where she worked and purchased her winning ticket will receive a 1% commission of $60,000, according to Loto-Quebec.

  • Player exodus cannot be stopped in Ghana – Inter Allies coach Tony Lokko

Inter Allies FC head coach Anthony Lokko insists player exodus cannot be stopped in Ghana.

The experienced trainer believes that home based footballers deserve more than what they are currently earning as salaries and bonuses which the clubs cannot.

And due to the fact that clubs cannot meet players’ demands, they will continue to travel elsewhere for greener environment every season.

It has been a common practice in Ghana as every season many talents travel outside the country to seek for greener pastures and that has affected the quality of the domestic league.

Lokko says it will be extremely difficult for the Ghana Football Association to stop the player exodus.

“It will be extremely difficult for us to stop players from travelling to seek greener pastures following how low their salaries are,” he told Opemsuo 104.7 FM in Kumasi.

“Until we are able to pay huge sums of money to our local players, we should forget to keep them in Ghana.”

  • Almost 100 people in Ohio were infected with coronavirus after man attended church service

A man with COVID-19 went to church in mid-June, then 91 other people got sick, including 53 who were at the service, according to Ohio’s governor.

“It spread like wildfire, wildfire. Very, very scary,” Gov. MIke De Wine said Tuesday. “We know that our faith-based leaders want nothing more than to protect those who come to worship.”

To illustrate how one infected person can spread the virus, state health officials released a color graphic showing how the cases radiated to some who weren’t even at the service.

DeWine urged people attending religious services to wear masks. He had mandated wearing face coverings for people 10 and older on July 22. On Wednesday, he ordered children in schools to wear masks, with a few exceptions.

The governor said he was going to send letters to churches, mosques and synagogues to share important health information.

“It is vital that, any time people gather together, everyone wear masks, practice social distancing, wash hands, and while indoors, making sure there is good ventilation and airflow,” he said.

In the case of community spread from the worshiper at the undisclosed church, a 56-year-old man went to the service. A total of 53 people got sick and 18 of those churchgoers spread it to at least one other person.

One instance of spread was a family in which a 34-year-old man became sick. His 31-year-old wife also became infected, as did four children who range in age from 1 to 11.

The wife and two children of the 56-year-old worshiper mentioned by the governor also got sick. The state didn’t detail the seriousness of the 91 people’s illnesses.

More than 96,000 people in Ohio have tested positive for the coronavirus.

  • World Economic Forum partners Ghana to launch Africas 1st Country Financing Roadmap

The World Economic Forum is partnering with the Government of Ghana to launch the first Country Financing Roadmap (CFR) initiative in Africa.

This government-led project, in collaboration with the Sustainable Development Investment Partnership, a World Economic Forum and OECD/DAC joint initiative, seeks to address bottlenecks in the financing of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A statement issued by the Forum, says “Just as the global community enters the Decade of Action to deliver on the SDGs, the COVID-19 pandemic has afflicted the world, creating an upheaval in health systems and devastating impact on the global economy.

While the economic and social crisis is seriously affecting every country, Ghana is emerging as a social and sustainability champion. Although the country has been affected by the pandemic, the government continues to work assiduously in containing the impact on society.

Still, Ghana, despite recent economic gains, is threatened by challenges such as climate change and desertification, challenges that could exacerbate inequalities in different parts of the society and set back the economy.

Accordingly, the country stands committed to using the SDGs as its framework for its post COVID-19 recovery, as well as in building back better.”

“The optimal way to recover from this crisis and build a more inclusive and resilient society is to frame the economic and social recovery in the context of the SDGs. As such, we are delighted to partner with the World Economic Forum on the Country Financing Roadmap. Through this initiative, working closely with other key partners, we will identify key SDGs financing gaps and determine a set of actions to unlock capital for critical investments in our country”, says Dr. Eugene Owusu, Special Advisor to the President of Ghana on SDGs.

Member of the Executive Committee of the World Economic Forum, Terri Toyota, said that, “As the COVID-19 pandemic has led to an economic crisis around the world, it is clear that sufficient finance cannot be mobilized from the public sector alone. The existing financial gap to pursue the 2030 Agenda must be filled by effective private-public cooperation.”

“The Government of Ghana has shown tremendous leadership as an SDG champion, and our partnership will be instrumental to inform and advance our joint efforts to open new markets,” she added.

Funded by the Government of Denmark, the European Commission, and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, the Ghana CFR initiative builds on existing assessments and experience from the public and private sector, international organizations, civil society and multilateral institutions, with the aim of defining an action plan to scale up financing for the SDGs.

  • Oaxaca bans sale of junk food to children

The Mexican state of Oaxaca has banned the sale of junk food and sugary drinks to children in an attempt to reduce high obesity and diabetes levels.

Oaxaca is the first state to take the measure in Mexico, which has one of the world’s highest rates of childhood obesity.

People breaking the law can be fined and have their businesses closed. Re-offenders face jail terms.

The move comes as Mexico’s number of deaths linked to COVID-19 nears 50,000.

Mexico’s death toll is the third-highest in the world after the US and Brazil. Experts say being obese or overweight puts you at greater risk of serious illness or death from the virus.

About 73% of the Mexican population is overweight, compared to one-fifth of the population in 1996, according to according to study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Mexicans consume more carbonated drinks per person than any other nation.

Oaxaca is the Mexican state with the highest child obesity rate and the second-highest rate in adults, according to Oaxaca state health data.

The passing of the law was greeted with applause from lawmakers inside the state Congress, but outside shop owners and street sellers were protesting against it.

The law forbids the sale, distribution and promotion of sugary drinks and junk food to those under age. It will also apply to vending machines in schools.

The lawmaker who introduced the bill, Magaly López Domínguez, said the idea was not to harm shop owners and street sellers. She argued that they could continue selling sugary drinks and junk food, just not to children.

Mexico’s deputy health minister and the country’s coronavirus czar, Hugo López-Gatell, welcomed the move. Mr López-Gatell last month called sugary drinks “bottled poison” and urged people not to drink them.

Christian Skoog, the Unicef representative in Mexico, also tweeted his approval (in Spanish), saying that such measures protected children’s rights to quality and nutritious food.

In 2014, Mexico introduced a tax on sugary drinks and junk food but it had so far stopped short of banning the sale of such items to children.

  • China sentences Canadian to death on drugs charge

A Chinese court has sentenced a Canadian citizen to death on charges of producing the drug ketamine.

A court notice in the city of Guangzhou said Xu Weihong was found guilty after a trial. His alleged accomplice, Wen Guanxiong, was given a life sentence.

No details of the case were disclosed. He is the third Canadian to be sentenced to death in China recently.

Relations between the countries have been tense since the arrest of a Huawei executive in Vancouver in late 2018.

Meng Wanzhou’s detention following a request from the United States angered China and soured relations with both Canada and the US.

How many countries still have the death penalty?

Local media in Guangzhou in southern China reported that Xu Weihong and Wen Guanxiong began making the drug in October 2016. Police later seized 120kgs (266 pounds) of it from Mr Xu’s home and another address, the reports said.

Ketamine is a powerful animal tranquilizer that has become popular as a recreational drug.

China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said there was no connection between the case and the current state of China-Canada relations.

“I would like to stress that China’s judicial authorities handle the relevant case independently in strict accordance with Chinese law and legal procedures,” said Mr Wang. “Death sentences for drug-related crimes that are extremely dangerous will help deter and prevent such crimes.”

Last year two other Canadian nationals were sentenced to death over drug charges. Robert Lloyd Schellenberg was found guilty of drug smuggling after a sudden retrial. Months later another man, Fan Wei, was given the death penalty for trafficking methamphetamine.

Earlier this year, China detained two Canadians, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, accusing them of spying.

  • GFA focused on delivering its mandate not impeding CAS verdict – Prosper Harrison Addo

The General Secretary of the Ghana FA, Prosper Harrison Addo says the FA is focused on delivering on its mandate and not perturbed about the impeding Court of Arbitration of Sports (CAS) verdict between the FA and Tema Youth President Wilfred Osei Kwaku.

Wilfred Osei Kwaku is seeking redress at CAS for his disqualification from last year’s Ghana FA presidential election by then Ghana FA Normalisation Committee led by Dr Kofi Amoah.

Osei Palmer was disqualified for failing to pay a 10 per cent fee on a player transfer to the FA.

The verdict from CAS may lead to re-election should it go in the way of Palmer which endangers the current administration led by Kurt Okraku.

The General Secretary, Prosper Harrison says the impeding case has no bearing on the FA’s day to day administration.

“We have a lot to do at the Ghana FA Secretariat so we don’t have the luxury to be thinking about the CAS verdict. We will follow to any directive from CAS but for now, we have a lot doing such as securing sponsorship, working with FIFA and also preparing for Congress”

  • National treasury halts emergency procurement of PPE

National Treasury Director-General Dondo Mogajane says an instruction will be issued to government departments across all spheres to halt the emergency procurement of personal protective equipment (PPE) as the State tightens the lid against corruption.

At a joint virtual meeting of the National Assembly and National Council of Provinces Finance Committees on Wednesday, Mogajane said the demand and supply of PPE had somewhat eased compared to the early stages of the outbreak.

“[PPE is] easily available and we have boosted local production… The local production of face shields and masks… is now in place after a few months of challenges in terms of how companies in South Africa could [participate in production],” said Mogajane.

The instruction to halt the emergency procurement of PPE comes as calls mount for all allegations of corruption, in relation to COVID-19 relief funds, be investigated and those responsible to be brought to book.

The allegations have over the past two weeks been a point of concern among many citizens, with some expressing their outrage on social media.

In his weekly newsletter on Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa said corruption during a national disaster is a particularly heinous type of crime, and perpetrators are going to be dealt with decisively and harshly.

Mogajane said with the halting of emergency procurement, the instruction will request all departments to revert to procurement processes that are compliant with all existing instructions for procurement.

National Treasury, Mogajane said, will lock the absolute price for all PPE and listed protective clothing procurement. Permission will have to be sought for any amount above the absolute price.

Institutions will be asked to provide National Treasury with the names of all PPE and protective clothing appointed service providers for publishing on the Treasury website.

    Bringing culprits to book

Finance Minister Tito Mboweni said the instruction previously issued by National Treasury in relation to all COVID-19 procurement has not been adhered to.

While it is important for accounting officers to adhere to the Treasury instruction, Mboweni said it was equally important for executive authorities – Ministers, MECs and Mayors – to hold accounting officers accountable.

He said it is now up to law enforcement agencies to follow up on companies that were awarded tenders in order to find any wrongdoing and to bring the culprits to book.

“One of the key issues is whether some of the companies, which were awarded these contracts, were properly registered with the company registration office. Were they registered with SARS? Did they go through a competitive process?

“The administrative investigation has to show us that indeed this was done and that the companies competed for these contracts, and these particular companies won the contracts on the basis of merit scores. They have to demonstrate that to us.

“In the meantime, I am having a conversation again [on Thursday] with the MECs of Finance to try to find out whether all these processes were followed or not, and if they were not followed, why they were not followed. Who broke the rules?

“In my conversation with the MECs of Finance, we are going to discuss and insist on the fact that all these contracts must be published for the public to see. In publishing who won which contract, we will also want to know who were the competitors, and on which basis did the competitors lose.

“We would be interested to know about the age of the companies. Were they formed [recently] or [have they been around for long]?”

Towards the end of July, President Cyril Ramaphosa signed a proclamation authorising the Special Investigating Unit to probe, in any State institution, allegations of corruption related to the COVID-19 national State of Disaster.

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has condemned the rude behaviour and vulgar language by some Senior High School (SHS) students towards President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo after writing their first final examination paper.

Lots of videos went viral on social media days ago showing some students in various SHSs insulting the President because they relied on leaked examination questions which didn’t appear in their actual exams.

The students, who are beneficiaries of the President’s free SHS programme, were disappointed that they couldn’t write their exams satisfactorily.

With some of them demonstrating and vandalizing school properties, others also blamed the President for not helping them amidst fears they will fail the exams and so used unpalatable words on the First Gentleman of the land.

Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa, addressing the issue, has cautioned his fellow legislators, politicians and the entire nation not to condone the student’s insubordination.

“Vandalizing school property & insulting the President because you are not pleased with your exams must be the height of indiscipline, insubordination & disrespect which must be condemned by all. Education is not just about passing exams, it is more about shaping good character,” he tweeted.

The Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights) has slammed government for apparent failure to implement recommendations made by a post-election violence probe team once headed by former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe two years ago.

The Motlanthe Commission was a seven-member Commission of Inquiry into post-election violence in Harare 2018.

Seven civilians were gunned down by soldiers who had been deployed into the Harare CBD August 1, 2018 to quell wild protest scenes by sympathisers of the opposition MDC Alliance who were agitated by the slow announcement of poll results amid rigging fears by government opponents.

The Commission recommended, among others, compensation for victims of the atrocities and the bringing to account, members of the country’s security establishment who killed the civilians.

The Commission also urged Zimbabwean authorities to create a platform for political dialogue with political opponents.

But in its report entitled, “The Motlanthe Commission: What’s next for victims”, ZimRights argues none of the recommendations has been implemented yet.

The rights watchdog argues this was sheer waste of taxpayers’ money.

“A year and a half into the commission of inquiry’s findings and recommendations, no justice has been done for the victim and the perpetrators remain at large.

“It leaves in question government’s band-aid intention in establishing and appointing the Commission of inquiry with whom it had no obligation to implement the recommendations,” reads the report.

“The government has not fulfilled the recommendations, instead politicians have sought to use the report more as a public relations document rather than a sincere quest for reform and nation-building.”

The report further points out Mnangagwa has only used the Motlanthe Commission report to gain favour internationally.

Adds the report: “It is important for government to seek dialogue first with its citizens and affected families before parading the report to foreign governments.

“Many believe it was wasted money and time.”

In December 2018, ISS Researcher Ringisai Chikohomeron described the Commission as a “High Level PR stunt” by Mnangagwa.

Government on the other hand argues it has fully implemented the recommendations.

Justice Ministry Permanent Secretary Virginia Mabhiza, who was also secretary of the Commission earlier this year, said a few delays were as a result of Covid-19 but everything else had been dealt with.

“We have complied fully with the Motlanthe Commission but some of the processes are still ongoing,” said Mabhiza.

She said compensation of victims had been delayed because they were not forthcoming.

A Political Leaders and Actors Dialogue (POLAD) platform formed to facilitate discussions on key policies by the Mnangagwa administration has been dismissed by main opposition MDC and since failed to have the expected impact.

MDC president Nelson Chamisa has refused to acknowledge Mnangagwa’s presidency and POLAD.

  • Roma sold to US businessman Friedkin for 591 million euros

Roma on Thursday announced a change of ownership, with US billionaire Dan Friedkin buying the Serie A club for 591 million euros ($700 million).

Friedkin, 54, takes over the Italian side from American businessman James Pallotta, 62.

“AS Roma can confirm that an agreement has tonight been reached between AS Roma SPV, LLC, the majority shareholder of AS Roma S.p.A, and The Friedkin Group regarding the sale of the club,” the club said in a statement.

“The operation is valued at around 591 million euros,” the club added. The final sales agreement must be signed before the end of August.

Pallotta bought two-thirds of the club’s shares in 2012, but has had 100 percent ownership since 2014.

Houston-based Friedkin is the chief executive of the Friedkin Group, a consortium notably involved in the automotive and hotel and entertainment industry.

“All of us at The Friedkin Group are so happy to have taken the steps to become a part of this iconic city and club,” said Friedkin in a statement.

“We look forward to closing the purchase as soon as possible and immersing ourselves in the AS Roma family.”

According to Forbes, his fortune is estimated at just over four billion dollars (3.6 billion euros), which would make him the 504th richest man in the world.

Friedkin’s son Ryan will reportedly be involved in the day to day running of the club.

“Over the last month, Dan and Ryan Friedkin have demonstrated their total commitment to finalising this deal and taking the club forward in a positive way,” said Pallotta.

“I am sure they will be great future owners for AS Roma.”

Boston-based Pallotta had been unpopular among club fans for his rare appearances in Italy and his handling of player transfers and the departures of club legends Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi who were both pushed out of the club.

Roma have had recurring financial difficulties and been sanctioned by European football’s governing body UEFA for breaches of financial fair play.

As a result the club are very active in the transfer market, regularly selling off their best players, to the chagrin of fans.

Pallotta’s great project had been the construction of a new stadium in the south of the capital which was delayed because of legal and bureaucratic issues, and remains at the planning stage.

The high-point of Pallotta’s reign was the club’s sensational Champions League 3-0 second leg comeback in 2018 to beat Barcelona, before losing to Liverpool in the semi-finals.

The club won their third Serie A title in 2001, but have not lifted any silverware since the Italian Cup in 2008.

This season they finished fifth, missing out on elite European competition for the second year in a row.

They will play Sevilla later Thursday in the Europa League last 16.

  • Lebanese investigators focus on negligence in Beirut blast

Investigators probing the deadly blast that ripped across Beirut focused Wednesday on possible negligence in the storage of tons of a highly explosive fertiliser in a waterfront warehouse, while the government ordered the house arrest of several port officials.

Public anger mounted against the ruling elite that is being blamed for the chronic mismanagement and carelessness that led to the disaster that the health ministry said killed 137 people and injured more than 5,000. The port of Beirut and customs office is notorious for being one of the most corrupt and lucrative institutions in Lebanon where various factions and politicians, including Hezbollah, hold sway.

The investigation is focusing on how 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive chemical used in fertilisers, came to be stored at the facility for six years, and why nothing was done about it.

Lebanon already was on the brink of collapse amid a severe economic crisis and the coronavirus pandemic before the blast. Many have lost their jobs and seen their savings evaporate because of a currency crisis. Food security is a worry, since the country imports nearly all its vital goods and its main port is now devastated. The government is strapped for cash.

A senior US Defence Department official and member of the US intelligence community said there were no indications the explosion was the result of an attack by either a nation state or proxy forces. Both spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to discuss intelligence briefings publicly. They told AP that at the moment, the explosion seems to have been caused by improper storage of explosives.

Fueling speculation that negligence was to blame for the accident, an official letter circulating online showed the head of the customs department had warned repeatedly over the years that the huge stockpile of ammonium nitrate stored in the port was a danger and had asked judicial officials for a ruling on a way to remove it.

Ammonium nitrate is a component of fertiliser that is potentially explosive. The 2,750-tonne cargo had been stored at the port since it was confiscated from a ship in 2013, and on Tuesday it is believed to have detonated after a fire broke out nearby.

    Requests for guidance

The 2017 letter from the customs chief to a judge could not be immediately confirmed, but state prosecutor Ghassan Oueidat ordered security agencies to start an immediate investigation into all letters related to the materials stored at the port, as well as lists of those in charge of maintenance, storage and protection of the hangar.

In the letter, the customs chief warned of the “dangers if the materials remain where they are, affecting the safety of (port) employees” and asked the judge for guidance. He said five similar letters were sent in 2014, 2015 and 2016. The letter proposes the material be exported or sold to a Lebanese explosives company. It is not known if there was a response.

Badri Daher, the head of the customs department, confirmed to the local LBC TV channel that there were five or six such letters to the judiciary. He said his predecessor also pleaded with the judiciary to issue orders to export the explosive materials “because of how dangerous they are” to the port and staff there.

Daher said it was his duty to “alert” authorities of the dangers but that is the most he could do. “I am not a technical expert.”

President Michel Aoun vowed before a cabinet meeting that the investigation would be transparent and that those responsible will be punished.

“There are no words to describe the catastrophe that hit Beirut,” he said.

After the meeting, the cabinet ordered an unspecified number of Beirut port officials put under house arrest pending the investigation.

  • Four non-residents grabbed for attempting to register

Four non-residents have been arrested for attempting to register for voter card at the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly registration centre on Thursday, in Accra.

This follows the vigilance of the Municipal Chief Executive Sandra Owusu- Ahenkorah and members of the municipal security team, who saw the culprits attempting to register even though they do not reside in the area.

One of them, who had already registered, had the voter identity card (ID) seized after the suspects confessed that they did not reside in the area, but had come from Kpong Katamanso.

They were arrested and handed over to the Tesano police (their names are being withheld pending further investigations).

The MCE told the Ghanaian Times that, she received reports that one Adams was assisting non-residents to register.

Madam Owusu-Ahenkorah said when she arrived at the premises of the assembly, she saw the suspects in a queue, and when they were quizzed, they said they live at Roman Ridge, but could not mention the house number or the name of their landlords.

She said the four confessed that they came from Kpone Katamanso, but because they were encountering difficulties, they decided to try elsewhere.

The MCE said they were apprehended by the security personnel at the centre and handed over to the police.

The Tesano District Police Commander, Superintendent George Atia, who confirmed the arrest, and said the ID card of the one who had already registered had been seized and would be invited by the Electoral Commission EC to defend his action.

Supt Atia said the suspects indicated that they hail from Blekusu in the Keta municipality of the Volta Region, and had been staying at Kpone Katamanso and occasionally work as labourers for their uncle, who is a mason.

  • We are ready for automobile market – Kantanka Automobile

Kantanka Automobile Ghana Limited, the only indigenous automobile manufacturing company in Ghana, is set to get on the market with their range of vehicles.

Francis Kujoji, General Manager of the company, said the company has been given the green-light to proceed with mass production of different models of vehicles. “This is something we have been waiting for and now that it has been given, it has given us the opportunity to forge ahead to expand our production and come out with different models for the Ghanaian market.

“It has given us some leverage to expand our production that we were hoping for. Without a policy from government, it is a risky business. Now that we have waivers on duties and levies, we will come with cars that are moderate and affordable” Mr. Kujoji told the B&FT in an interview.

He said with current production standing at 12 units per day, the new policy direction would allow them to reach 20 per day. According to him the future of the industry is very bright with numerous economic benefits.

The auto industry is one of the largest contributors to employment, as lots of industries will spring up and job creation is assured at every level. He noted that with their small operation, Kantanka currently has 150 permanent employees and with demand increasing, there would be room for more employment.

Also, the automobile industry offers very good opportunities for technical and vocational institutions in the country because the premium on theory will shift to application of both theory and practical.

“It is going to help a lot and I believe it is going to revamp our automotive industry. We have various auto class tests in Abossey Okai, Odorna, Kokompe, Suame Magazine, so when we put these auto classes together and then we form an auto park, that is where Ghana is going to see the benefit of this automotive industry.”

He said Ghanaians should expect nothing but quality from the company, simply because their cars are equipped with the basic safety mechanisms which every Ghanaians will be happy to ride, urging them to patronise them.

  • Tweneboa Kodua SHS students apologise to school authorities, government for riot

Final year students of the Tweneboa Kodua Senior High School in the Ashanti Region have rendered an unqualified apology to school authorities and government following a protest on campus.

The riot which resulted in the destruction of properties was allegedly caused by the strict supervision of the headteacher of the school, during the writing of the WASSCE Integrated Science paper.

Mr. John Asante had also been accused of manhandling some students and teachers during the exams.

In a video circulating on social media, the students had threatened to boycott the exams if their headteacher is not removed from the examination hall.

While the boys marched to the office of the District Chief Executive (DCE), the girls who stayed on campus refused to take food served at the dining hall.

The police were subsequently called in to restore calm as the protest nearly halted the writing of Paper 2 of the Integrated Science exam.

But in a new video that has gone viral, some students could be seen on their knees while a male colleague apologises for their behaviour which has been widely condemned.

“On behalf of the entire students, I want to apologise first to the entire teaching staff, non-teaching staff, assistant headmaster, District Chief Executive, District Police Commander, Education Directorate and our dear headmaster. We are very sorry,” he said.

  • Coronavirus: We are not ready for football – Inter Allies coach

Inter Allies head coach Tony Lokko has disclosed that his team is not ready for the resumption of football as the coronavirus pandemic lingers on.

Ghana has recorded 32,000 cases since the outbreak of the virus and as the government continues to ease restrictions on some sectors of the economy, football activities remained suspended since March this year.

The effects of the coronavirus have led to the Ghana FA cancelling the 2019/20 football season with a new date for restart scheduled for October.

Despite efforts from the Ghana FA to ensure football restart amid the pandemic, Inter Allies coach Tony Lokko has hinted that his players are not ready as safety measures or protocols to ensure football returns in the safest possible means have not been put in place.

“We are not ready for our football to come back,” Tony Lokko told BBC Africa.

“I have been communicating with my players and they are also scared. Look at the situation, we are all scared of the virus.

“The health materials we are supposed to put in place are not ready and that is the fear of everyone at the moment.”

Meanwhile, the Ghana FA despite announcing to start the Ghana Premier League in October is yet to disclose the plans to ensure all the COVID-19 protocols are adhered to.

The FA is still engaging the government on ways to ensure football restarts amid the pandemic.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo last week gave the green light for the country junior national teams to resume camping ahead of their international assignments.

All sporting activities were suspended by the Ghanaian government due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

However, with the gradual ease of lockdown in the country, the Black Starlets (Male U-17), Black Princesses (Female U-20) and Black Maidens (Female U-17) will resume camp.

Whilst giving updates on measures taken against the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the President said the U-17, U-20 female teams can resume camping ahead of their respective international assignments in September 2020.

“The playing, technical and management teams must observe strictly all the protocols issued by Government, CAF and FIFA against COVID-19 whilst training,” he said.

  • ‘No contact’ from Man Utd over Sancho say Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund boss Hans-Joachim Watzke says the Bundesliga runners-up have had “no contact” with Manchester United over England winger Jadon Sancho.

According to UK media reports, Man Utd want to sign the 20-year-old who scored 17 goals and created the same number of assists last season as Dortmund finished second behind champions Bayern Munich.

Sancho is valued at around 120 million euros ($142 million) and Dortmund have said they have yet to receive an offer for their talented forward who joined in 2017 from Manchester City’s academy.

“So far, there has been no contact between Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United in terms of Sancho,” chief executive Watzke told Munich-based newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

“Not even indirectly or through so-called middlemen.

“There has never been an offer for Jadon, but there is a certain sum from us as to what should at least be paid,” Watzke added, referring to the 120 million euros price tag.

“I don’t expect there to be any problems.

“Jadon has accepted the situation and is a pleasant, fair bloke.”

Dortmund’s director of sport Michael Zorc says he plans to have Sancho in the squad for the new German league season, which kicks off on September 18.

“I expect Jadon to go to training camp on Monday (at Bad Ragaz, Switzerland) and play with us for the coming season,” added Zorc.

However, the transfer window in both Germany and England does not close until October 5, a date extended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Dortmund need to handle Sancho carefully as both former stars Ousmane Dembele and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang forced transfers to Barcelona in 2017 and Arsenal in 2018 respectively by effectively going on strike.

  • IGP condemns lynching of 90-year old woman at Kafaba

The Inspector-General of Police, James Oppong-Boanuh has condemned the lynching of 90-year-old Akua Denteh at Kafaba in the Savannah Region.

Akua Denteh, about two weeks ago, was tortured and killed after she was accused of being a witch by a supposed priestess brought into the community to allegedly cleanse it.

The matter has generated nationwide condemnation with calls on the police to ensure that all those culpable are made to face the law.

During a visit to the Savannah Region, Mr. Oppong-Boanuh expressed worry over the incident and urged Ghanaians

“The incident was something that was worrying. If you look at the age of the woman and what was done to her by her own relatives is a bit disheartening. Ghanaians in this age and times should not be doing that. Why is it that it is always the ladies that are being accused of witchcraft? We should always ensure that we protect our mothers and sisters.”

So far, seven people are in police custody in connection with the incident.

Six of them have already been arraigned and charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

The other one is a 40-year-old priestess, Sherina Mohammed, who is alleged to have masterminded the lynching has been remanded into police custody.

Sherina Mohammed has admitted to being the woman in the viral video, but denied she led the lynching.

She is expected to reappear in court on 20th August 2020.

    Akufo-Addo welcomes recent arrests

President Akufo-Addo has expressed his satisfaction with the arrest of these persons believed to have taken part in the gruesome murder of the woman.

He is hopeful the prosecution of the individuals will serve as a deterrent to others.

“I am happy that the Regional Minister says five people have been arrested and will be arraigned. I beg you. We do not want to hear of such an incident again”, the President said during a tour to Damongo.

The President had earlier said the lynching had disfigured the nation and prayed for justice to prevail.

  • Price of hydroxychloroquine skyrockets in Nigeria

The price of the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine has skyrocketed in Nigeria, according to the government’s consumer protection body.

There’s been widespread interest in hydroxychloroquine as both a preventative measure and for treating patients with coronavirus but the World Health Organization (WHO) says the drug doesn’t reduce death rates in patients with coronavirus.

Despite the lack of evidence, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission’s audit of prices across the country has observed an astonishing rise in the drug’s price in the last four months.

It found that – a packet of 60 tablets selling for 3,000 naira ($8; £6) four months ago – could be on sale in pharmacies for as much as 75,000 naira ($194; £147) now.

In a letter published on their Twitter account the body described “excessive and unconscionable pricing”.

It added that “unreasonable, unjust and irrational prices or margins are a criminal offence” in Nigeria.

Promotion by leading political figures such as US President Donald Trump has led to both hydroxychloroquine, and the related drug chloroquine, becoming the subject of widespread speculation online about their potential benefits and harmful effects.

This has led to high demand for the drugs and global supply shortages.

But despite some early studies raising hopes, one subsequent larger scale trial has shown it’s not effective as a treatment and the WHO has halted its trials.

  • Two foreigners jailed for acquiring Ghana voter card

Two foreign nationals were sentenced to two years each in prison by the Keta Circuit Court for unlawful acquisition of the Ghana Voter Identity (ID) card.

The two, Okafor Wale, a 47-year-old Nigerian and Yao Dieu-Donne Evoda, a 22-year-old Togolese, were each convicted on charges of registering for Ghana Voter ID card when not qualified and a prohibited immigrant.

Evoda was slapped with an additional charge of abetment of crime.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Obrako Sarpong Bempah, the Aflao Police Commander, said the convicts, who lived in the country for over ten years, managed to get people to vouch for them to register for the card on July 10.

He said the Togolese first got Ghanaian neighbours to vouch for him as an eligible applicant to acquire the card and he later got one person in addition to himself and convinced the Nigerian he lived in the same house to also register.

Mr Bempah said the Nigerian after acquiring the card tried to cross over the border through an unapproved route at ‘Beat 11’ in Aflao and was arrested by an Immigration officer, who he tried to beg using the Ghana Voter card as his trump card.

The Police Commander said upon interrogation, he confessed his nationality and mentioned his Togolese accomplice.

They were arrested and subsequently handed over to the Police for action.

“We sent them to court on July 13. The second appearance was on July 27 on which day the court took their plea and deferred pronouncement on the case to July 30. They got two years each on all the counts which run concurrently,” he said

  • One shot dead during clash with police in Tamale

One person has been shot dead after residents of Choggu Manayili in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale attacked police officers on Wednesday, August 5,2020.

The police had been called by the chief of the area to rescue a suspected thief who was about to be lynched by the residents.

The mob turned on the police and attempted to stop them from rescuing the suspect.

The Northern Regional Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent Otuo Acheampong who narrated the incident to MyNewsGh.com, said the residents had tied the suspect with robes and were about the kill him, after they caught him with a cattle that he allegedly stole from the community.

According to him, the mob was angry that the police had come to rescue the alleged thief.

“They had succeeded in rescuing the suspected thief into the police van. And then the irate mob which had wanted to lynch him before the arrival of the police started to even to snatch the suspect from the police, and people started…even they fired and missiles were thrown at the police, and even one of the officers was hit in the hand”.

  • Facebook and Twitter punish Trump for virus claim

Facebook and Twitter have penalised Donald Trump and his campaign for posts in which the president claimed children were “almost immune” to coronavirus.

Facebook deleted the post – a clip from an interview Mr Trump gave to Fox News – saying it contained “harmful Covid misinformation”.

Twitter followed by saying it had frozen a Trump campaign account until a tweet of the same clip was removed.

US public health advice makes clear children have no immunity to COVID-19.

What did Facebook and Twitter say?

A Facebook spokesperson said on Wednesday evening: “This video includes false claims that a group of people is immune from COVID-19 which is a violation of our policies around harmful COVID misinformation.”

It was the first time the social giant had taken action to remove content posted by the president based on its coronavirus-misinformation policy, but not the first time it has penalised Mr Trump over content on his page.

Later on Wednesday, Twitter said it had frozen the @TeamTrump account because it posted the same interview excerpt, which President Trump’s account shared.

A Twitter spokesman said the @TeamTrump tweet “is in violation of the Twitter Rules on COVID-19 misinformation”.

“The account owner will be required to remove the Tweet before they can Tweet again.”

It later appeared to have been deleted.

Twitter last month temporarily suspended Mr Trump’s son, Donald Jr, for sharing a clip it said promoted “misinformation” about coronavirus and hydroxychloroquine.

But in March, Twitter said a tweet by entrepreneur Elon Musk suggesting children are “essentially immune” to coronavirus did not break its rules.

What did Trump say in his TV interview?

Speaking by telephone to morning show Fox and Friends on Wednesday, Mr Trump argued it was time for all schools nationwide to reopen.

He said: “If you look at children, children are almost – and I would almost say definitely – almost immune from this disease.

“So few, they’ve got stronger, hard to believe, I don’t know how you feel about it, but they’ve got much stronger immune systems than we do somehow for this.

“And they don’t have a problem, they just don’t have a problem.”

Mr Trump, who is running for re-election in November, also said of coronavirus: “This thing’s going away. It will go away like things go away.”

  • Woman arrested for roasting hand of stepson at Gomoa Nkwantanan

A woman who callously burnt the fingers of her 3-year-old stepson and buttocks of her 7-year-old stepdaughter at Gomoa Nkwantanan in the Central Region has been arrested by the Police.

The suspect is said to have committed the dastardly act after her husband had left home for work for two weeks.

The father had asked his divorced wife to bring the children to stay with him for a while since basic schools have been closed down due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Information gathered by Kasapa FM News Yaw Boagyan indicated that the stepmother had been maltreating the children; sometimes starving them and forcing the 7-year-old to beg for food.

The suspect capped her maltreatment meted out to the kids by burning their hands and buttocks for reasons best known to her.

The victims are receiving treatment at Winneba Trauma Hospital.

The Kasoa DOVVSU Commander, ASP Doris Laryea confirmed the incident and arrest of the suspect who has been remanded by Ofaakor circuit court.

ASP Doris Larye advised mothers not to leave their children in the care of their rivals after divorce. She also appealed to stepmother to desist from torturing their stepchildren.

  • We are ready for 2020 polls IGP assures

The Inspector-General of Police, James Oppong-Boanuh, has said the Ghana Police Service is ready to maintain law and order before, during and after the 2020 polls.

According to him, his outfit is prepared to do whatever it takes legally to ensure that the elections come off without any incidents urging the youth in particular not to allow themselves to be used by self-seeking politicians for personal gain.

“The police is ready to maintain law and order before, during and after the 2020 polls. There is however the need for collaboration between the security agencies and the citizenry to ensure that the polls is not characterized by incidents. Education is key in this regard”, he observed.

During a courtesy call on the Savannah Regional Minister Salifu Adam Braimah in Damongo, the Police Chief hinted on the need for a collaboration between the police and various stakeholders in the maintenance of peace.

“The citizens must be prepared to keep peace. The youth in particular must not allow politics to create divisions between us because we are one people who will continue to stay in the same community together after the polls,” he pointed out.

In his view, politics is about the contest of ideas and not about who is more violent than the other.

“Let us not antagonize each other over politics because it does not pay to be violent”, he stressed.

  • Europe fears second virus wave as Trump takes heat for & misinformation

While Europe tightened virus restrictions to face the threat of a second wave of COVID-19, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday found himself in the crosshairs of Facebook and Twitter because of a video in which he claims children are “almost immune” to the new COVID-19. The worldwide death toll crossed 700,000 as the two US social media giants took action against Trump for spreading what they called “misinformation” about the virus.

Several European countries and cities reimposed tighter restrictions, including a “wake-up week” in Greece and new face mask and quarantine rules elsewhere.

The US tallied another 1,262 deaths and 53,158 cases Wednesday, marking 157,930 total deaths and more than 4.8 million cases — making it by far the worst-hit country in the world.

A total of 703,640 deaths have been recorded so far around the world, according to an AFP tally compiled from official sources as of 0300 GMT Thursday.

Europe remains the hardest-hit region with 211,764 fatalities, but the number of deaths is rising fast in Latin America, with 208,329 deaths recorded.

Restrictions re-introduced Announcing the re-introduction of restrictions in Greece, government spokesman Stelios Petsas told Mega TV: “We are trying to awaken people with messages and daily announcements on additional measures,” citing travel, social gatherings and public transport as major spreading concerns.

Restrictions reimposed on the northeast Scottish city of Aberdeen included the closure of all indoor and outdoor hospitality venues starting late Wednesday as First Minister Nicola Sturgeon referred to what could become a “significant outbreak.”

Toulouse in southwest France made face masks compulsory, with more French cities expected to follow suit.

And Germany included Belgium’s Antwerp province on its list of regions requiring arriving travelers to quarantine for 14 days unless they can show a negative virus test.

In Belgium, one of the country’s biggest meat processing plants, Westvlees, sent 225 staff home to quarantine after a cluster of coronavirus cases was discovered.

Switzerland added mainland Spain to a quarantine list of 46 countries as well as Singapore and Romania.

In the Netherlands, similar mask-wearing measures came into force in Rotterdam and in some busy neighborhoods of Amsterdam, including its famous red-light district.

‘Misinformation’ In an extraordinary move late Wednesday, Facebook removed a video clip about the virus from Trump’s account.

It was the first time the social network has taken down one of the president’s posts for violating its content rules — for “claims that a group of people is immune from COVID-19 which is a violation of our policies around harmful COVID misinformation,” a Facebook spokesperson told AFP.

Twitter meanwhile said it had blocked Trump’s official campaign account, also for a “misinformation” violation over a tweet containing the same video, in which Trump made the case for reopening US schools starting in September.

Soon thereafter, the @TeamTrump account was active, suggesting the contested video had been taken down.

Also in the United States, New York mayor Bill de Blasio, announcing new checkpoints at access roads into the city, said: “We’re not going to let our hard work slip away and will continue to do everything we can to keep New Yorkers safe and healthy.”

The virus killed more than 32,000 people in the city, which was one of its first epicenters in the United States.

Latin America surge One of Brazil’s leading indigenous chiefs, 71-year-old Aritana Yawalapiti, died Wednesday of respiratory complications caused by COVID-19.

Brazil, South America’s largest country, is driving a surge in Latin America and the Caribbean. It has recorded nearly 2.9 million cases, and more than 97,000 deaths, nearly half the region’s 208,329 fatalities.

Meanwhile the death toll continued to rise in Peru, which reported a new daily record of 221 deaths and 7,734 new cases, according to Health Ministry figures, bringing the total COVID-19 deaths to 20,228, and 447,624 confirmed cases — though total deaths could be closer to 50,000 when considering suspected cases, according to press reports.

Peru, population 33 million, has the third highest death toll in Latin America after Brazil and Mexico.

Vaccine trials In South Africa, the hardest-hit country in Africa, some 24,000 health workers have contracted the coronavirus and 181 have died since March, Health Minister Zweli Mkwize said.

But he added: “We haven’t got to the stage where we don’t have hospital space for patients.”

In Afghanistan, the health ministry said nearly a third of the population — or 10 million people — has been infected with the novel coronavirus.

The world’s hope of ending the current cycle of outbreaks and lockdowns rests on finding a treatment, which has proved elusive so far.

The US government Wednesday announced a new $1 billion investment in a COVID-19 vaccine being developed by Johnson & Johnson, guaranteeing 100 million doses.

J&J;, via its subsidiary Janssen, received $456 million in March.

Clinical trials on humans began in China for a potential coronavirus vaccine developed by German pharmaceutical group BioNTech with Chinese company Fosun Pharma.

  • Facebook removes Trump post over false & virus claims

Facebook said Wednesday it had removed a video post by US President Donald Trump in which he contended that children are “almost immune” to the coronavirus, a claim the social network called “harmful COVID misinformation.”
This was the first time the leading social network has pulled a post from the president’s page for being dangerously incorrect, although it did remove a post from his campaign’s page for using a Nazi symbol.

The video clip from a Fox News interview “includes false claims that a group of people is immune from COVID-19 which is a violation of our policies around harmful COVID misinformation,” a Facebook spokesperson told AFP.

The move came as Facebook faces pressure to prevent the spread of misinformation while simultaneously being accused of silencing viewpoints by calling for posts to be truthful.

Trump defended his comments when questioned about them during a White House press briefing.

“I’m talking about (being immune) from getting very sick,” Trump said.

“If you look at children I mean they are able to throw it off very easily.”

Health officials have urged people of all age groups to protect themselves against exposure to the virus, saying everyone is at risk.

Trump last week unleashed a burst of misleading medical speculation, criticism for his own top virus expert and praise for an eccentric preacher-doctor touting conspiracy theories.

That put an end to a brief period during which Trump sought to get his shaky reelection campaign back on track by addressing national criticism of a leadership void in a crisis that has already killed nearly 160,000 Americans and wreaked havoc on the world’s biggest economy.

Trump said it was unfair that leading US infectious diseases specialist Anthony Fauci was more popular than him.

He pushed his pet theory — counter to advice from his own government and most doctors — that the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine can be used to treat COVID-19 patients.

And he took pains to praise Stella Immanuel, a doctor and preacher who believes in witchcraft and a plot being carried out to vaccinate people against being religious, calling her “spectacular.”

Facebook placed an informational disclaimer last month on a post from Trump claiming mail-in voting would lead to a “corrupt” election.

The move appeared to follow through on the social network giant’s pledge to step up efforts to fight misinformation, including from world leaders, shifting slightly from its hands-off policy on political speech.

Facebook has largely held firm to a policy that it would not fact-check political leaders, but it has pledged to take down any post which could lead to violence or mislead people about the voting process.

A coalition of activists has pressed Facebook to be more aggressive in removing hateful content and misinformation, including from the president and political leaders. Some 1,000 advertisers have joined a boycott aiming to ramp up pressure on Facebook.
