  • Rapist father jailed 18 years

    A 42-year-old Zimbabwean man who raped his 11-year-old daughter on numerous occasions since she was eight years, was yesterday sentenced to 18 years in prison by a Bindura magistrate.

    The man from Mhasvi Village in Chiweshe, kept his daughter isolated and silenced her by saying no one would look after her if she reported him to the police.

    The man pleaded not guilty to rape charges when he appeared before regional magistrate, Mr Ngoni Nduna, but was convicted after a full trial.

    He was initially sentenced to 20 years, but Mr Nduna suspended two years of the sentence.

    Mr Nduna said the man had committed, “a terrible, traumatising, dehumanising, humiliating and abominable crime”.

    The court was told that the medical report showed that the minor had sustained hymnal tears that had since healed, an indication that the abuse started years back.

    The sexual assault started in 2016 when the man was left in the custody of the minor after he divorced the mother.

    The victim slept in the kitchen, while the father used the bedroom.

    The court heard that on an unknown date in 2016, the father knocked at her door at night.

    She opened the door for him and he raped her. The court heard that she cried for help, but no one heard her and he ordered her not to tell anyone about the offence before going back to his room. He raped her on numerous occasions and in her evidence, in court, the minor said she became afraid of her father.

    On December 20, 2019, she was assaulted for allowing a neighbour to fetch water at their well and decided to leave the homestead.

    She met Chaitezvi Mundandiswe, the sister-in-charge at Rosa Clinic while looking for transport to Mt Darwin where she intended to look for her mother.

    The girl narrated her ordeal to her and the matter was reported to the police, leading to the man’s arrest.

    In his defence, the man said he used to come home late and never sexually assaulted his daughter.

    He told the court that relatives refused to take custody of the minor and the mother was also not forthcoming.

  • US missionary pleads guilty to abusing children in Kenya

    An American missionary accused of sexually abusing girls at an orphanage he ran in western Kenya has pleaded guilty to the charges in a US court, local media in Philadelphia report.

    Gregory Dow is likely to serve up to 16 years in prison, according to the Lancaster Online.

    He pleaded guilty to four counts of engaging in illicit sexual conduct in foreign places during a teleconference on Monday with US District Judge Edward Smith and federal prosecutors.

    He ran the orphanage in Bomet county, 263km (163 miles) west of the capital Nairobi, with his wife Mary Dow.

    He committed the crimes between October 2013 and September 2014.

    Mr Dow fled Kenya in September 2017 to avoid prosecution after police were tipped of the abuses.

  • Airline sorry for flying Nigerian star Naira Marley to concert

    An airline in Nigeria has apologised to the aviation minister for flying musician Naira Marley on Saturday from the commercial hub, Lagos, to the capital, Abuja, to perform in a concert

    The Executive Jet Company was suspended by the minister for facilitating what was classed as non-essential travel and was against the government’s recommendations to fight the spread of coronavirus.

    In an apology letter to the aviation minister, the airline’s CEO, Sam Iwuajoku, said the flight had been initially booked for a judge on Sunday who then made other travel arrangements.

    Mr Iwuajoku said in the letter that he had approved the flight on Saturday after reviewing the passenger manifest and thought one of them was a government minister.

    “I saw Fashiola Babatunde, I thought it was the Honourable Minister for Works with his men, so we decided to do the flight since [it was] a serving minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I didn’t know that it was a bunch of useless people,” Mr Iwuajoku said.

    Nigerian artist Azzez Fashola, also known as Naira Marley, was among those who travelled.

  • Zimbabwean in court over ‘fake coronavirus contracts’

    A Zimbabwean businessman is due to appear in court for a bail hearing, charged in connection with a multimillion-dollar coronavirus medicine and equipment procurement scandal.

    Delish Nguwaya is facing two charges of misrepresentation and fraud after he allegedly tried to secure contracts to supply a state firm.

    He’s the first person to be arrested in a scandal that was initially exposed on social media.

    People started raising questions about how a controversial businessman, who had failed a vetting process months earlier, had managed to set up a new company and secure millions of dollars’ worth of contracts to supply medicines and equipment – some at hugely inflated prices.

    The government has said it has now cancelled his contract.

    President Emmerson Mnangagwa has long pledged to stamp out corruption, but his government has secured only two convictions in nearly three years despite many prominent arrests.

  • Malawi courts stop forced retirement of chief justice

    The courts in Malawi have issued two separate orders stopping the government from sending the country’s Chief Justice Andrew Nyirenda on leave pending retirement.

    By law, judges in Malawi have to retire when they reach 65, but Mr Nyirenda will only turn 65 at the end of next year.

    The government said that seeing as he had accumulated so many leave days – more than he had time left to serve – he should step down now.

    But the courts have tried to put a stop to this.

    Malawi’s courts and the presidency have been on a collision course since judges nullified President Peter Mutharika’s re-election last year and ordered fresh presidential elections, which will now be held on 23 June.

    Mr Mutharika is facing a stiff challenge from opposition leader Lazarus Chakwera who is heading a coalition of nine opposition political parties.

  • Know when Ghana Card mop-up registration exercise will start in your region

    The National Identification Authority (NIA) is set to embark on a mop-up mass registration exercise in the various regions across the country with the exception of the Eastern Region.

    This is because the Eastern Region will continue with its Ghana Card registration from June 18 to June 27 after the exercise got suspended on March 21 following an interlocutory injunction by the High Court.

    In a press release signed by the Head of Corporate Affairs, ACI Francis Palmdeti said the NIA is expected to register about 16.7 million Ghanaians by the end of the mop-up registration exercise.

    “It is expected that a total of 16.7 million Ghanaians would have been registered and issued with Ghana cards when the mop-up exercise is completed,” he said.

  • Nigerian troops kill Boko Haram commander

    A Boko Haram commander, Abu Imrana has been killed in an exchange of gunfights with Nigerian soldiers in Borno state.

    Vanguard had reported how over 150 people were killed in attacks across Monguno and Gubio local government areas of Borno last week.

    Recently, Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai commended the Nigerian troops for repelling Boko Haram attacks in Mungonu.

  • Coronavirus: Nigeria records 403 new cases, total now 16,085

    The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has announced 403 confirmed new coronavirus cases in the country on Sunday.

    The 403 cases announced by the Centre for Disease Control takes the total number of confirmed cases to 16085.

    The NCDC also announced the discharge of 119 patients from isolation centres across the country with 13 new deaths reported.

    “On the 14th of June 2020, 403 new confirmed cases and 13 deaths were recorded in Nigeria No new state has reported a case in the last 24 hours.”

    Till date, 16085 cases have been confirmed, 5220 cases have been discharged and 420 deaths have been recorded in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

    The 403 new cases are reported from 20 states- Gombe(73), Lagos(68), Kano(46), Edo(36), FCT(35), Nasarawa(31), Kaduna(17), Oyo(16), Abia(15), Delta(13), Borno(13), Plateau(8), Niger(7), Rivers(7), Enugu(6), Ogun(6), Kebbi(3), Ondo(1), Anambra(1), Imo(1)

  • Swiss authorities search for person who left $191,000 of gold bars on train

    Swiss police are looking for a forgetful individual who left something rather important on a train — a package full of gold bars, worth more than $190,000.

    The parcel containing the gold bars was found in the carriage of a Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) train travelling from the northeastern Swiss town of St Gallen to Lucerne, a city in the centre of the country, in October last year, authorities said.

    Despite “extensive investigations,” the owner of the high-value package had not been tracked down, officials said in a statement published in the local government Lucerne Canton gazette.

    After authorities failed to track down the owner of the precious cargo, the gold bars, worth 182,000 Swiss francs ($191,000), were confiscated by the public prosecutor’s office.

    Now, authorities have decided to publicize their quest to find the bounty’s mysterious owner.

    In a bulletin dated June 2, officials said the owner has five years to make a claim for the treasure.

    A spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office told CNN that several inquiries had been made about the gold and were being checked. No details about the nature of the checks were given.

  • Nigeria records ‘one rape every five hours’

    There were 717 rapes in Nigeria between January and May this year, amounting to one rape every five hours, the country’s police chief says.

    Mohammed Adamu described rape as a serious and wicked offence and urged Nigerians to report any case.

    Speaking to journalists after meeting President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential palace in Abuja, the police chief said that 799 suspects had been arrested and 631 had appeared in court.

    But Mr Adamu did not speak about the sentences or number of convictions. Activists are concerned that not many trials result in someone being found guilty.

    Some of the recent victims were allegedly murdered after being raped prompting a series of protests across Nigeria demanding action from the authorities and communities.

    The police chief said security agencies are partnering with non-governmental organisations in the areas of training, working with victims and evidence gathering for successful prosecutions as part of efforts to tackle the issue.

  • Coronavirus: Face masks mandatory for Uber passengers and drivers

    Ride-sharing giant Uber is to make it mandatory for passengers and drivers to wear face coverings from Monday in the UK.

    The minicab app firm said it was taking measures “to help everyone stay safe” and had introduced measures to give drivers access to protective equipment.

    Face coverings will become compulsory on public transport and in hospitals in England from Monday.

    It comes after a study suggested masks could cut Covid-19 spread by up to 40%.

    Uber drivers in London will have to submit a picture of themselves to verify they are following the new rules before they can begin working.

    Other measures include trialling in-car partitions in Newcastle, Tyne and Wear, distributing more than two million masks to drivers and sending out 54,000 units of cleaning spray and hand sanitiser.

    Uber’s regional general manager for northern and eastern Europe, Jamie Heywood, said: “For months we’ve been urging people to stay home, for their safety and the safety of drivers who make essential trips.

    “Now, as cities begin to reopen and people start moving again, we’re taking measures to help everyone stay safe and healthy every time they use Uber.

    ” ‘Potentially useful tool’ Research on face coverings has been described as “slim” by many authorities, and for health professionals there’s always been the fear of a rush to snap up medical-grade masks.

    But studies in laboratories have shown not only how far droplets can be spread by coughs but also how various kinds of materials can dramatically reduce how many of those droplets do get through.

    A homemade mask will not do a great job of protecting you but may reduce the chances of you infecting others.

    And if enough people follow that advice, the risks of the infection spreading are brought down.

    There have been passionate disagreements over this within the world of science.

    And even advocates would agree that the public wearing masks will not defeat the virus on its own; but it’s a potentially useful extra tool as we come out of lockdown.

    From Monday, face coverings will be compulsory on public transport in England.

    Scotland already recommends wearing coverings in shops and on public transport.

    People in Wales are asked to wear three-layer face coverings on public transport and other situations where social distancing is not possible.

    Face coverings on public transport are also recommended in Northern Ireland.

    According to government figures, the average person in England made 10 taxi or private hire vehicle trips last year with an average duration of 20 minutes per trip.

    More than a third of all licensed vehicles in England are registered in London.

    Uber said its platform was used to complete 10 billion trips worldwide in 2018.

  • Czech quarantine policy draws protest on Polish border

    Czech and Polish citizens of the divided border town of Cesky Tesin/Cieszyn gathered on Friendship Bridge on Monday evening to highlight what they see as the absurdity of continuing border restrictions due to Coronavirus.

    Around 200 people from both sides of the Czech-Polish border gathered on the bridge for a silent protest against the ongoing restrictions put in place by the Czech authorities, Czech Radio reports. The event was attended by representatives of both the Czech and Polish town councils, including the mayor of Cieszyn on the Polish side.

    The Czech government has designated the Polish province of Silesia as high-risk and requires all Czechs returning from there and all Poles crossing into the Czech Republic from there to provide a negative Coronavirus certificate within 72 hours or self-isolate for 14 days. Local people say it is destroying business and family ties as they are used to crossing the river to visit the other side several times a day.

    “We’re one city. If you say the border’s going to open, then it should be open on both sides. If you only open it on one side, then to me that’s not opening it,” the mayor of Cieszyn, Gabriela Staszkiewicz, told Czech Radio.

  • Kenya president’s staff test positive for coronavirus

    Four staff members working in the office of Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta have tested positive for coronavirus, a statement from the presidency says.

    All four have been referred to a nearby hospital for treatment, it adds.

    The president and his family are “safe and free from Covid-19”, the statement says.

    All staff, including the president and his family, are tested on a regular basis.

    But to ensure that the spread is contained there will now be “extra access protocols” for those staff members who live outside state house.

    Kenya currently has more than 3,000 confirmed cases of the virus and more than 80 people have died after catching Covid-19.

  • UN must do more to remove ‘stain of racism’ – Officials

    More than 20 senior United Nations officials from different African countries have spoken about their outrage at systemic racism and police brutality in the United States and across the world.

    The authors of a letter, including the head of the World Health Organization Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and the head of UNAids Winnie Byanyima, say the organisation must do more to remove what they called the “stain of racism on humanity”.

    Writing in a personal capacity they say racism exists within the UN and the organisation needs an honest assessment of itself if it is to lead the wider fight for equality.

Not many professional footballer stars in Europe who have Ghanaian roots have shown the kind of deep love Memphis Depay has been showing to Ghana. Most comments, pictures and videos from Memphis on social media shows that he is deeply in love with Ghana.

    He is always proud he has his roots in Ghana. He could have played for the senior national team, Black Stars, but he turned the opportunity down owing to the fact his Ghanaian father, Dennis Depay, neglected and left him to his Dutch mother, Cora Schensema, in his early years. As I write this article, he has peacefully reunited with his father. I don’t know what exactly his dad might be thinking about but I am sure he has regretted neglecting young Memphis especially now that his son is a superstar and also couldn’t play for Black Stars because of his actions. This should serve as a lesson to all up coming fathers. Don’t ever neglect the products of your sperms no matter the situation.

    Depay became popular to many Ghanaian football fanatics when he moved to Manchester United. At a point in ones life, you start to show maturity in whatever you do. Your attitudes or behaviours changes and such is Memphis. He started showing deep love for Ghana when his stellar performance started at his current French Club, Lyon.

    Memphis has been spotted in Ghana at different locations especially Cape Coast. A lot of stars around the globe knows their roots to be Ghana but only fewer of them have even visited or shown interest in Ghana. Memphis Depay is exceptional among them. He loves everything about Ghana. The dress, the people, the food and the historical places. He has good memories about Ghana after his recent visit. I wouldn’t be surprised if one day he says he want to live in Ghana.

    He had a lot of fun in Ghana. In his visit to one of the the blind and deaf school in Ghana, he slept in a dormitory. He could have slept in one of the luxurious 5star hotels around but he chose to sleep in a dormitory. What human love surpass this? He danced and played football game with the kids. Guess what? He also dressed in their school uniform. His interactions with them was so great and I haven’t seen one of this kind.

    As a footballer, he has a unique way of celebrating goals he scores. He does that by using his index fingers to close his ear canal on both sides of his head. The meaning of this sign is best known to him. His style of celebrating his goals has been copied by other footballers around the world. According to him, once you decide to use his style, then you have decided to live a special way of living. He made this post with a picture of one of the Ghana national team and Kotoko FC players celebrating with his style.

    He has really shown his love for Ghana. He never stop using the Ghana flag in most of his posts. On March 6th, 2020, he made a post on Twitter wishing all Ghanaians a happy Independence day. This is lovely. He calls Ghanaians “my people” because he knows he is a true son of Ghana

    One of his recent post that caught many attention was, “When I became blind and deaf to the world, my spirit became stronger and I started to focus on myself and the relationship with God, but I will never shut my eyes off racism”. He added a picture he took together with the blind and deaf children in Cape Deaf School in Cape Coast. Reading this post will melt your heart.

    Memphis Depay is indeed a true son of Ghana. When your roots calls you, you have nothing to say than to oblige to it lovely. Memphis, Ghana also loves you as her son.

Although some of the women have not reacted to rumours that,they have children with Hon.Kennedy Agyapong,the MP for Dome Kwabenya,Mrs.Sarah Adwoa Sarfo confirmed sometime ago that,she has 2 children with Kennedy Agyapong.

    And the MP himself has said,he admit having children with some women of which they have not brought the Kids to him.

    He began schooling as he tried to catch up with most of his age mates at age sixteen at the Adisadel college in cape coast.This was when he was in his eleventh year in 1976.

    In the year 2000,Hon.Kennedy Agyapong was elected in the 2000 general elections by the residents of the Assin North constituency, to represent them,and he retained his seat in the 2004 and the 2008 elections.The maverick MP claimed, he is the only person doing politics in his family since it was not their intention,but he was introduced into politics by one of his managers he worked with.

    In 2012,he left Assin North to contest as an MP for the Assin Central and he was elected as the MP for Assin Central due to his hardwork and fame in Assin.He was then re-elected in 2016.

    Aside from politics,he is also a business man and he is counted among the wealthiest politicians in the country.And he is currently the MP for the Assin Central Constituency.

    The NPP government had failed the people of Ghana in everything they are doing as they have scored below the belt. Over the 631 promises they wrote in their manifesto in 2016 they have delivered a little over 87 of them, even some of them were credited to them” This is according to Sammy Gyamfi the NDC Communication Director

    Sammy said this to Philip Osei Bonsu who is a senior broadcast journalist and the host of political, social and current affairs talkshow, Eko Sii Sen on Asempa FM.

    The NDC communication’s officer further added that, Information Minister Oppong-Nkrumah who responded to the NDC press conference has failed in analysing the main issue, hence made only comic relief.

    Oppong Nkrumah is disgracing the NPP. instead of him to analyse the issue, he is (Oppong Nkrumah) rather making a comic relief. Because we have listed 631 promises that were written in their own manifesto and we gave pages to then but he didn’t come to talk about the pages if they are either true or false but just beating around the bush. The NPP are hiding behind a statement they claim is a vision. But still they have failed the people of Ghana.”

    He wishes the NPP would take their time to read their reports one after the other and analyse the presentation that was done before they answer.

    That he says would have been the best and good exercise which would have helped the people of Ghana and these would have brought us to a fruitful discussions.

    The NPP believe and had accepted that the words that were presented during our press briefing were heavy and loaded.

    Former Central Regional Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bernard Allotey Jacobs has said on Net2 tv on phone call that, Kennedy Agyapong is a man of great wisdom, very honest and a man who really helps everyone without discrimination.

    He hailed Ken Agyapong and advised him to continue his good works because it is helping the citizens and Ghana as a whole.

  • IGP must ‘arrest’ Akufo-Addo – Okudzeto Ablakwa

    Former deputy Information and Education minister in the erstwhile John Dramani Mahama Administration and member of parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwah has said that Akufo Addo should be investigated by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and if possible put behind bars because he has said lots of lies to Ghanaians.

    The MP made this statement on Monday, June 16th, 2020 during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) weekly press briefing on the topic: ‘NPP 2016 manifesto into perspective.’ The NDC is currently informing Ghanaians on the unfufilled promises made by the Akufo Addo led government.

    In a presentation, the MP said:

    “You see, Akufo Addo must be called by the IGP for some questioning and answers just like how National security called Bernard Mornah. He has lied, he continues to lie and he might be lying soon too.”

    “He promised one student, one chocolate, Accra will be the cleanest city in Africa, providing bank account for every Ghanaian in this country? Has all these seen the light of the day? Too much lies from an old man. That’s uncalled for.”

    The NDC also claimed that the NPP are reducing their promises because they have realized it is not achievable, but the NDC have all records of the promises.

    Okudjeto continued: “Their total promises made is 631. Total promises the Vice president Dr. Bawumia alone made was 388. Smuggled promises by the Vice president was 8, deceptive promises were 8. In all they have been able to achieve only 235. We score them 14%,” the MP added.

    The MP satarically said that these were what the NPP government had rather achieved.

  • Former Kotoko star Nii Adjei turns to ‘farming for survival’ amid coronavirus shutdown

    Former Asante Kotoko captain Daniel Nii Adjei has ventured into farming as a means of “survival” as coronavirus shutdown continues to bite footballers in Ghana.

    The 31-year-old midfielder is now harvesting maize in the West African country due to the absence of football.

    Ghanaian football has been on suspension since March this year due to the outbreak of the novel virus.

    With his current club King Faisal struggling to pay wages of players amid the coronavirus shutdown, the former TP Mazembe ace turned to a new profession to survive.

    “Due to the COVID and absence of football, I started some farm and currently I’m harvesting maize,” Nii Adjei told Accra-based Angel FM

    “I can’t say cos of COVID-19, I’ll sit at home and be hungry while there’s rain and fertile land available.”

    Nii Adjei is a celebrated former Kotoko skipper who spent six fruitful years with the Ghanaian giants before joining Congolese outfit TP Mazembe.

    He returned to the Porcupine last season but his contract was terminated due to poor performance.

  • NIA to embark on mop-up mass registration exercise throughout the country

    The National Identification Authority (NIA) is set to embark on a mop-up mass registration exercise throughout the country, except in the Eastern Region.

    This will enable those who could not register for the Ghana Card during the registration period do so from now.

    It is expected that a total of 16.7 million Ghanaians would have been registered and issued with Ghana cards when the mop-up exercise is completed.

    Meanwhile, the NIA has stated that it will continue the Mass Registration in Eastern Region which was suspended on 21st March 2020 in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

    “All persons who registered but have not received their Ghana Cards are requested to go to the registration centre where they registered to pick up their card,” NIA stated.

    CARD ISSUANCE

    The Ghana Card Issuance Exercise by the National Identification Authority (NIA) commenced on Wednesday, 10th June 2020 at 5,635 registration centres across the country and is set to continue till Thursday, 18th June 2020. The exercise will enable approximately 3,934,073 Ghanaians who could not receive their cards during the mass registration exercise to do so. The cards are being issued to Ghanaians at the same centres where they registered during the mass registration exercise. Nearly 800,000 Ghanaians have received the Ghana Card since the exercise began last Wednesday, 10th June 2020.

    All persons who registered but have not received their Ghana Cards are requested to go to the registration centre where they registered to pick up their card. To receive the card, a Ghanaian must present the registration application form, the printout or receipt given at the time of registration, or provide other relevant information to be cross-checked against his/her photograph and personal details contained in a Registration Centre Album.

    Any Ghanaian with concerns about the card issuance process may contact NIA on any of the following: WhatsApp 0205044793; Call 0302-738-333, 0242438615.

    By the end of the exercise on 18th June 2020, over 11million Ghanaians will possess the Ghana Card which they may use for social, economic and political purposes. Out of that number, a total of 10,295,578 Ghanaians will be aged 18 years and over.

    CONTINUATION OF MASS REGISTRATION IN THE EASTERN REGION

    NIA will continue the Mass Registration in Eastern Region which was suspended on 21st March 2020 in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The exercise will take place from 18th 27th June 2020.

    Musician Eric Jeshurun has revealed his reason behind the change of his name.

    The ‘Yahweh Victory chant’ hitmaker was formerly known as Jeshurun Okyere.

    Revealing the rationale behind the change, he told Okay FM’s Abeiku Santana on Ekwanso Dwodwoo, that the official name on his passport is Eric Jeshurun Okyere.

    He added that most people know him from childhood as Eric, adding that prior to his shot to fame, he was widely known as “Eric Jeshurun.”

    Against this background, he decided to merge the two (Eric and Jeshurun) and drop the Okyere.

    Jeshurun further added that he had received countless feedback over challenges encountered by people try to search for his videos and other songs online.

    This coupled with other brand positioning vision, there was the need to address the feedback.

    Jeshurun is also the convener of one of Ghana biggest worship gatherings ‘August Worship’ which has featured many local and African acts like Nathaniel Bassey, Preye Odede, Joe Mettle, Joe Beecham, Victoria Orenze etc.

    His music and concerts have won several awards and nominations at the African Gospel Music Awards UK, VGMAs, Ghana Music Awards UK among others.

  • Airline company suspended for flying Naira Marley to Abuja by Federal Government

    The executive Airline which a few days ago flew Naira Marley to Abuja has been suspended by FG.

    According to the Federal Minister for Aviation, Hadi Sirika flight company that provided services for Naira Marley and his crew to Abuja for a concert has been sanctioned.

    The minister added that, the flight was approved for a different purpose.

    He revealed this while answering questions during the daily briefing on the presidential task force on Coronavirus not long ago indicating that the company has been suspended indefinitely.

    Additionally, the flight captain will be sanctioned for providing false information.

  • Nigeria develops three-year coronavirus response plan

    The Nigerian government says it is developing a three-year action plan for its response to the pandemic.

    It also said it is not yet safe to reopen schools and other places where large gatherings could take place.

    Health Minister Osagie Ehanire told journalists that the pandemic “will be with us for a long time and we shall keep learning as we go along”.

    He said the response plan covers the short, middle and long term effect of the pandemic.

    Tracing, testing and case management will also be driven by data and evidence.

    The minister decried what he described as an escalation in the level of non-compliance with social distancing and wearing of face masks especially in markets and motor parks.

  • Nigeria’s police arrests 799 rape suspects in 5-months – IGP Adamu

    The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Adamu has said that there has been an upsurge on sexual-based violence as a result of the lockdown imposed by the government to contain the spread of the ravaging Coronavirus pandemic.

    IGP Adamu, who was flanked by the Ministers of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen and the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said within five months, the Police have recorded 717 rape incidents, arrested 799 rape suspects, 631 of the cases investigated and charged to court, while investigations are ongoing on 52 of the cases.

    The Police boss, who said that some people indulge in rape for ritual purposes, assured that all those involved in the criminal act will not go scotched free.

    According, “We are here to brief you on sexual and gender-based violence and the action that the government has been taking, particularly the Nigeria Police. “It has come to the public knowledge now that because of the COVID-19 restrictions, we have surged in cases of rape and gender-based violence. These are cases that are now coming up but we want to let members of the public know that, rape and gender-based violence have been there.

    “The law enforcement agents have been dealing with these cases, in most cases, members of the public are not aware of the actions that the law enforcement agents have been taking.

    “The Nigeria police so far from January to May 2020, we have recorded about 717 rape incidents that were reported across the country, about 799 suspects have been arrested, 631 cases conclusively investigated and charged to court and 52 cases are left and under investigation.

    “The police and other security agencies and other Non-Governmental Organizations have been collaborating, to see to it that these cases of rape and gender-based violence are dealt with.

    The NGOs and CSOs (Civil Society Organizations) that have the capacity to deal with this kind of offenses, have been cooperating with law enforcement agencies in capacity building, management of victims of rape and similar offenses and procedures for collecting evidence, towards successful prosecution.”

    IGP Adamu said the upsurge of rape cases in recent times has made the government take a more drastic approach towards curbing the menace. He called on every Nigerian that has or comes across to any victim of sexual offences or rape or gender-based violence, to quickly report to law enforcement agents.

    He said, “Keeping it without reporting it will give room for the perpetrators to continue to commit the offenses. It is a very wicked offense, it is a very serious offense, it is very wicked of an individual to engage in rape or defilement.

    “And there are a lot of causes, some are doing it for ritual purposes, some are doing it because they are within the family and they see the victims and have the urge to go into it and do it. But such people should not be allowed to go scotch free.

    “I am just to inform you that the government is doing something about it and you can see me with the Ministers of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed and Women Affairs Development, Pauline Tallen.

    “From now onward, a national partnership with every stakeholder is what we are going into. It will not only be within the country but within the sub-region. We have to partner with organizations that are involved in this.”

    IGP Adamu said the Police and the government have been working with UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) and other civil society organizations to curtail sexual-based violence in the country.

  • Kenya probes ‘disappearance’ of Jack Ma’s donation

    Kenya’s health ministry is investigating the alleged disappearance of coronavirus medical equipment and testing kits donated by Chinese billionaire Jack Ma.

    The shipment comprising of protective gear, testing kits, face masks and equipment arrived in the capital, Nairobi, on 24 March.

    Health Minister Mutahi Kagwe confirmed to journalists about the investigation, amid reports of a shortage of protective gear for health workers and testing kits.

    “We know there was something like that, there is an ongoing investigation and therefore I can’t talk about it any more than that,” he told a media briefing on Sunday.

    Uganda’s Electoral Commission has banned mass campaign rallies and encouraged aspiring candidates to campaign through the media.

    The commission said the country’s general elections will go ahead in January 2021, but with strict measures to protect voters against coronavirus.

    Wearing of masks, hand hygiene and social distancing will be enforced on polling day.

    The commission has squeezed the elections’ timelines, including the nomination of candidates, into less than six months.

    Ugandans will elect their president, members of parliament and local leaders in the elections.

    President Yoweri Museveni, who is serving his fifth term of office, is eligible for a fresh term but has not announced whether he will vie.

    Associate Professor of Clinical and Health Psychology, Prof Joseph Osafo has waded into the controversies surrounding Parliament where it is alleged that some Members of Parliament who have tested positive for COVID-19 are ‘hiding’ and refusing to isolate themselves.

    He said as role models in society, it sends out the wrong signal to their constituents and followers and can affect the fight against the virus.

    Parliament has been rocked with confusion after members subjected themselves to be tested for COVID-19.

    The Minority reported that a number of MPs have tested positive to the virus; however, the Majority in the House insisted that they were peddling falsehood.

    Reports were rife that some MP’s, parliamentary staff and Journalists who have tested positive for the virus were refusing to self-isolate and were still coming to the House.

    Health Minister

    Then President Akufo-Addo confirmed on Sunday evening in his 11th address to the nation on the coronavirus pandemic that the Health Minister, who is also a Member of Parliament for Dormaa Central, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu had tested positive and was in a stable condition.

    MPs not bold

    Contributing to a panel discussion on Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, Prof Osafo said the MPs are not bold enough to declare their status because “the stigmatization is deeply rooted in officialdom . . . when you have officials who are infected but are denying, their followers can emulate because they are like moral examplers; the ordinary people can also hide their status.”

    He further said others (MPs) might be afraid of losing their seats and so they will prefer to hide their status.

    “Some of them may be subscribing to some myths and fear that as an MP and in an election year; (if they declare their status), how will they campaign; so there’s that fear,” he added.

    Majority Leader’s Caution

    Presenting the business statement before the House last Friday, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Majority Leader cautioned persons who have been infected with coronavirus to stop visiting the House.

    The Suame MP noted that the affected persons have defied the communications from the COVID-19 team that they should stay away following their positive results.

    On his part, Minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu assured that the confidentiality of medical records remains of extreme paramount importance hence urged the said patients to avail themselves.

    Speaker of Parliament, Prof Mike Aaron Oquaye said the medical team will conduct another test for MPs and staff.

    He warned that any MP or Journalists who fail to conduct the test will be banned from entering the premises of Parliament.

  • Guinea to reopen schools and places of worship

    Guinea’s President Alpha Condé has announced the easing of some restrictions intended to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

    In an address to the nation on Monday, the president said places of worship will reopen from 28 June in areas where infections have not been reported.

    Students scheduled to sit for exams and those in universities will resume learning on 29 June.

    During the first phase of resumption of lessons, social distancing and mask-wearing will be implemented.

    Wearing of masks in public is compulsory in the West African country and a nighttime curfew from 23:00 to 04:00 local time is in force.

    The country has confirmed 4,572 coronavirus cases including 26 deaths.

  • Works on Hearts of Oak Pobiman Project to start next week

    Works on the Accra Hearts of Oak SC Pobiman Academy starts next week, the club’s majority shareholder Togbe Afede XIV has revealed.

    Turkish firm Prefabex Construction is expected to start work on the modern facility.

    The Pobiman Project when completed will be housed with Staff Residence, Senior Housing Unit, GYM, Training Centers (Pitches), Laundry, Swimming Pool, Lockers, Toilet Facilities, Kitchen and Dining Hall.

    “To become successful technically, we need infrastructures and that’s where Pobiman Academy Project comes in. We have done everything that we need to do for the Pobiman Academy Project to start”, the President of the National House of Chiefs told GTV Sports +

    “We have signed a contract with a Turkish company, Prefabex to build the structures for the Pobiman project. Prefabex is building the structures in Turkey and a local contractor has been tasked for the foundation under the Turkish company’s supervision.   • Myron Boadu, Hudson-Odoi join Kudus Mohammed on 2020 Golden Boy Award shortlist

    Dutch-born Ghanaian forward Myron Boadu, Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, and FC Nordsjaelland whizkid Mohammed Kudus have been shortlisted for the 2020 Golden Ball Award.

  • US Supreme Court backs protection for LGBT workers

    America’s top court has ruled that employers who fire workers for being gay or transgender are breaking the country’s civil rights laws.

    In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court said federal law, which prohibits discrimination based on sex, should be understood to include sexual orientation and gender identity.

    The ruling is a major win for LGBT workers and their allies.

    And it comes even though the court has grown more conservative.

    Lawyers for the employers had argued that the authors of the 1964 Civil Rights Act had not intended it to apply to cases involving sexual orientation and gender identity. The Trump administration sided with that argument.

    But Judge Neil Gorsuch, who was nominated to the court by President Donald Trump, said acting against an employee on those grounds necessarily takes sex into account.

    “An employer who fires an individual for being homosexual or transgender fires that person for traits or actions it would not have questioned in members of a different sex,” he wrote. “The limits of the drafters’ imagination supply no reason to ignore the law’s demands.”

    What does this mean?

    Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 forbids employers from discriminating against employees on the basis of sex as well as gender, race, colour, national origin, and religion.

    Under the Obama administration, the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which enforces the anti-discrimination law, said it included gender identity and sexual orientation. But the Trump administration has moved to roll back some protections in health care and other areas.

    While some states in the US had already explicitly extended such protections to LGBT workers, many have not.

  • Virus-hit India’s overwhelmed health workers brace for monsoon

    With hospitals already severely stretched, coronavirus-hit India is now bracing for the monsoon and its deadly annual onslaught of mosquito-borne illnesses, with an overwhelmed army of public health workers the only defence.

    Every year illnesses such as dengue fever and malaria infect more than half a million people and kill hundreds in India as the monsoon brings much-needed rain but also devastation and disease.

    With more than three decades of experience as a doctor in India’s chronically underfunded public healthcare system, Vidya Thakur – medical superintendent at Mumbai’s Rajawadi Hospital – is used to managing “heavy burdens”.

    But now, she says, “COVID-19 has left us helpless… and the monsoon will make things even more difficult”.

    Every bit of space at the 580-bed state-run hospital where she works is already devoted to dealing with the pandemic. Beds crowd corridors, storage rooms function as wards and staff are overworked.

    At Mumbai’s massive Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital, better known as Sion, undergraduates have been drafted into service, medical resident Shariva Ranadive told AFP.

    Many experienced doctors and nurses are staying on the sidelines because they are vulnerable to the virus due to their age or pre-existing conditions such as diabetes.

    “Everyone is working constantly… we are overwhelmed,” Thakur told AFP.

    And now with the monsoon has arrived in Mumbai on its months-long journey northwards, she is readying for the usual rush of seasonal ailments.

    A particular problem is that many season illnesses have symptoms that are virtually indistinguishable from coronavirus, such as fever, breathing difficulties and loss of appetite.

    This means more testing, more isolation beds and more protective equipment will be needed to ensure that patients are diagnosed correctly and not exposed to coronavirus too.

    “We will need to treat everyone as if they were a COVID-19 patient,” said Thakur. “Every precaution will have to be taken.”

    Delayed efforts, double shifts

    Healthcare workers are not the only ones battling exhaustion.

    A months-long lockdown to prevent the epidemic from spreading left Mumbai with an acute shortage of sanitation workers.

    Thousands of public health workers who fumigate neighbourhoods to kill disease-carrying mosquitoes had to delay those crucial efforts for two months to focus on sanitation instead.

    “Many of our men are doing double shifts, working 14 hours straight,” said Rajan Naringrekar, the head of the city’s insecticide department.

    With nearly 60,000 infections, Mumbai accounts for around a fifth of India’s coronavirus cases.

    As teams fumigated a slum and cleared out stagnant water – a potent breeding ground for mosquitoes – from sagging tarpaulin roofs, storage bins and bottles, Naringrekar told AFP many of them were afraid of contracting the virus.

    The risks will increase exponentially with the rains, with workers required to inspect homes and offices in case of a dengue outbreak.

    “We are obviously worried but we have to do our job and take as many precautions as we can,” he said, pointing to the gloves and masks worn by the workers.

    Monsoon trauma

    Their fears are shared by millions living in slums across India, who say their homes offer little protection against coronavirus or other diseases.

    For Mumtaz Kanojia, who lives in a small one-room house with her son and daughter, the memory of her bone-chilling three-week-long bout with malaria still haunts her 10 years on.

    “My daughter and I were severely ill, we had a fever, we couldn’t eat anything. She even fainted at one point,” the 53-year-old told AFP.

    Kanojia is already fearful of contracting coronavirus, and the onset of the monsoon prompts further dread – of flooding outside her front door, a leaking ceiling, contaminated drinking water and deadly diseases.

    “The water gets everywhere… and the mosquitoes follow,” she said, adding that she and her neighbours had little choice but to use tarpaulins as makeshift coverings despite the risk they could become breeding grounds.

    “Without it, the roof leaks every time there’s a heavy downpour,” she said.

    “Each time, we have to take care of it ourselves. No one from the government ever comes to help.”

    The Ghana Police says it is awaiting an executive instrument (E.I) on the mandatory wearing of face mask as directed by President Nana Akufo-Addo to contain the spread of the deadly coronavirus in the country.

    President Akufo-Addo in his nationwide address on covid-19 to the nation announced wearing of fase mask has now been made mandatory in the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Central and Western regions where the number of people contracting the virus has surged.

    “…residents of these four regions and indeed all Ghanaians must remember that the wearing of masks is now mandatory.Leaving our homes without our face masks or face covering on is an offence,” the president said in the Sunday address.

    He directed the police to ensure strict compliance of the directive, which he said will be the subject of an executive instrument.

    The police in a statement Monday night said they thus expect compliance from Ghanaians.

    “Good people of Ghana, we expect immediate compliance from the general public on the mandatory wearing of face mask, as directed by H.E President Nana Akufo-Addo, while awaiting the Executive Instrument on the subject,” it said.

    It has thus advised all to safeguard their health, families, loved ones and the nation as a whole, stating “COVID-19 is real, it kills but you can prevent it”.

    Of the 11,964 cases so far recorded in the country, 4,258 have recovered with 54 deaths and 7,652; a situation President Akufo-Addo said was a worrying situation.

    Greater Accra leads with 7,138 cases followed by the Ashanti region with 2,205 confirmed cases.

    The Western Region, after being flagged the new hotspot region, follow with almost 1,000 cases. Its eastern neighbours, the Central Region, has so far recorded 621 cases, making it the fourth highest region with Covid-19 cases.

    “It is important for me to remind residents of the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions, where a great majority of cases have been recorded, and in the Western and Central Regions, where we are seeing an increase in infectious cases, to continue to adhere strictly to the social distancing and in-house hygiene protocols announced,” President Akufo-Addo advised.

  • North Korea ‘blows up joint liaison office’ with South

    North Korea has blown up its joint liaison office with the South near the border town of Kaesong, South Korean officials say.

    The move comes just hours after the North renewed threats of military action against the South.

    The site, which is in the North’s territory, was opened in 2018 to help the two Koreas to communicate.

    The liaison office has been empty since January due to Covid-19 restrictions.

    Tensions between North and South Korea have been escalating for weeks, prompted by defector groups in the south sending propaganda into the north.

    The North Korean leader’s sister, Kim Yo-jong, threatened to demolish the office in a “tragic scene” in a statement at the weekend.

    South Korea’s Unification Ministry in Seoul confirmed that at 2:49pm local time there was an explosion at the liaison office.

    In recent weeks, North Korea has repeatedly condemned the South for allowing propaganda across the border.

    Defector groups regularly send balloons with leaflets and other items, including USB sticks, into the north.

    Last week the North announced it was severing all official communication links with Seoul.

    The two states set up the office in Kaesong after talks between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and his counterpart from the South, President Moon-Jae-in.

    “North Korea’s violent destruction of the liaison office at Kaesong is a symbolic blow to inter-Korean reconciliation and co-operation,” said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul.

    “It’s hard to see how such behaviour will help the Kim regime get what it wants from the world, but clearly such images will be used for domestic propaganda.”

    Analysts say Pyongyang may be seeking to create a crisis to increase its leverage as nuclear negotiations with the US are at a standstill.

    North and South Korea are technically still at war because no peace agreement was reached when the Korean War ended in 1953.

They claim it’s Gyedu Blay Ambulley Uncle but when you ask Uncle Gyedu Blay Ambulley, he will tell I had to name it Hiplife”, he emphasized.

    He added that he made Hiplife attractive; ”…I laugh when they’re fighting over the name because it’s not the name that made it relevant. It was the work behind the name.”

    Reggie Rockstone also touted the impact of Hiplife in Ghana to refute claims by musicians like Shatta Wale who think Hiplife has become extinct in the country’s music industry.

    ”Hiplife has done almost everything from radio to television, employment. I mean look at the music. Look at the soundtrack to the country; I mean we have a colorful collage of artistes today, from Patapaa to you name it. You know all of these kids are employed now. People are employed. You look at my brother Dr. Duncan; Bola Ray had a huge hand in Hiplife. You ask him about his humble beginnings, Hiplife will be up there”, he said.

  • Man electrocuted at a mosque in Kumasi

    A fifty-year-old man was on Saturday afternoon electrocuted by an exposed electric cable at a mosque at Nima Junction in the Asokore-Mampong Municipality.

    The deceased, Baba Haruna Suleiman, was said to be cleaning the mosque together with other committee members when the incident occurred.

    Mr Basiru Sheihu, an eyewitness, told Ghana News Agency (GNA) that following the easing of restrictions on public gathering by the President, the Committee at the Al- Albayan Mosque decided to clean and tidy the place for prayers on Saturday.

    He said due to the dusty nature of the woolen carpets in the mosque, they decided to use an electric hover to speed up the process.

    Mr Sheihu said whilst hovering the dust, a power fluctuation occurred and Baba Suleman, who was then holding the hover was electrified by an exposed cable and he fell down unconscious.

    He was rushed to the hospital but died on arrival.
