  • GFA Executive Council unanimously vote to cancel GPL season

Ghana FA’s Executive Council has unanimously voted to cancel the 2019-20 season, sources within the 12-member body have told Ghana’s leading football website, GHANAsoccernet.com exclusively.

The decision was taken at a meeting via a video conference on Tuesday following a marathon deliberation on the future of the current campaign.

The Executive Council by a majority decision decided to abandon its season due to the coronavirus outbreak which has wreaked havoc to the game in the West African nation.

The Ghana FA has set June 30 to make public its final decision on the 2019-20 season but GHANAsoccernet.com understands the season is completely over barring any last minute change.

The Executive Council is clothed with powers to decide on all matters that hinge on “unforeseen contingencies and force majeure”.

Article 78 of the 2019 GFA Statutes amended at Congress on December 19 clearly stipulate that “The Executive Council shall have the power to decide on all cases of force majeure and on all matters not provided for in these Statutes, such decisions to be made according to right and justice, taking into account the relevant regulations of FIFA and CAF.”

With no end in sight to when restrictions will be eased for football to return coupled with its financial implication on clubs amid the Covid-19 precautions, the Executive Council has decided to prematurely end the season, sources have told GHANAsoccernet.com.

The season has been thrown into turmoil since football was suspended back in March this year amid uncertain signals from government – which is reportedly unwilling to risk players and officials back onto the pitch.

Ghana lifted a partial lock-down in April but has been reluctant to allow football to return despite easing restrictions for non-contacts sport.

Some Premier and Division One League teams were hoping for a return of the game shortly after the easing of restrictions, targeting a mid-August resumption of their seasons.

But that may remain a pipe dream with the Executive Council under enormous pressure to finally CANCEL the season.

A majority of clubs in the bottom half of the Premier and Division One Leagues want the season scrapped amid the coronavirus shutdown while a chunk of administrators are pushing for the current campaign to be axed.

While TV right holders StarTimesand FA Cup sponsors MTN are threatening to withdraw their sponsorship if the season is annulled, clubs will simply not budge.

The Ghana FA has been adamant to heed to several calls from many principal stakeholders, insisting the resumption will “take place if the government give a seal of approval and in full compliance with the rules for protection of health and safety of stakeholders.”

But it appears they have backtracked after unanimously voting to abrogate the season, GHANAsoccernet.com has been told.

The next two weeks will be crucial for Ghanaian football with the Executive Council expected to announce the direction of the season.

  • Good news for football fans: C.K Gyamfi left an autobiography

When I became editor of the Ghana edition of Drum magazine in the early 1960s, I used to double as the paper’s main Sports Writer.

My pen name a tongue-in-cheek nomenclature if ever one existed was Kokooase Adowa [Duiker Found Under The Cocoa Trees]! I am sure this had something to do, subliminally, with the fact that I had long, thin legs as a child, and that could run so fast on errands for my elders that one of them renamed me “Motor!”

Anyway, in the guise of Kokooase Adowa, I once visited the Black Star camp when the national team was preparing for a match with another African country. As soon as the team’s glamorous right-winger, the late, inimitable Baba Yara, saw me, he launched an attack on me for something I had written about him in Drum:

“You said in your report that I should use my left foot every now and then, but that’s precisely what I did in that match! Maybe you didn’t watch the match closely?” Yara charged.

The Black Star player-coach, Charles Kumi Gyamfi, intervened at once to forestall an argument between myself and his most precious possession.

“What he was implying, in saying that, “Gyamfi explained, “is that he knows you’re an ambidextrous forward, but that your natural instinct is to use your right foot more often than your left. You, of course, can’t notice that you’re doing that, because your whole mind would be on the game as a whole and not on individual moves you might or might not make.

“There are some criticisms that are made of us as players from the point of view of an admirer, not that of a critic. You have to read an article carefully before you can detect such nuances. For instance, in that same article that you’re cheesed up, about, he remarked that a ball I had shot at goal would have earned us a goal had I passed it to someone else better placed than me!

“Now that’s a serious criticism to be levelled against a player-coach, who, after all, is in charge of strategy and should set a good example to his players. But he added that he wondered why “Gyamfi of all people” should have done that! In saying that, he was revealing something about me, which was that he expected me, with all my intelligence, to make an impeccable decision about what to do whenever I got the ball! You can’t call that a ‘criticism’!”

My head swelled when Gyamfi defended me like that. But Baba Yara, who had a very sharp wit, immediately retorted that “What he did is like when a Fulani man wants to punish you: he will hit you, but then immediately bend down to breathe air onto the stricken spot so that the blow wouldn’t hurt you too much!”

Everyone laughed. And the tension which was about to arise between me and the players was instantly dissolved. Gyamfi, as the players’ protector, had defused a situation that could have ignited into hostility by the players towards me.

This, of course, would have been reflected in my next report on the team’s performance. Yet football players long for adulation, and hostile criticism against them gets to them all too easily.

The intercession by Charles Kumi Gyamfi in the threatening altercation between me and Baba Yara revealed to me that Gyamfi wasn’t just simply a very good player who had risen to become the national coach, but also, that he was a first-class psychologist and an expert manager of men’s egos.

He had saved me from the tongue of Baba Yara, but at the same time, he had subtly taught Yara something about the delicate art of cultivating diplomatic relations between footballers and sportswriters.

Indeed, so broad was Gyamfi’s intellect that his coaching method was total he took charge of the players’ sensitivities, whilst, at the same time, exacting the best physical and mental performance from them. In other words, he was a coach whose qualities comprised both intellectual depth and technical prowess a ‘Mourinho’ before his time; an Alex Ferguson who didn’t allow the results of his man-management skills to be scuppered by a prickly personality.

I recall these things about “C.K” because I am in the very happy position of having been given a sneak preview of the Autobiography Gyamfi left behind when he passed on 2 September 2015. Apparently, C.K had been painfully putting down his recollections of his long, illustrious football career, during his retirement and even when was enfeebled by illness. He was fortunate enough to befriend by a very young student called Fiifi Anaman, who, as it happened, was a “football enthusiast.”

Despite the half a century of years that constituted the age-gap between the two men, they developed a rapport which enabled “C K” to entrust what he had written to Fiifi, to enable him to “ghostwrite” the fantastic Autobiography that is about to be published by that indefatigable and shrewd Publisher, Fred Labi, proprietor of Digibooks.

Entitled “Black Star: The Autobiography of C K Gyamfi”, the book is certain to become an instant best-seller when it appears in our bookshops in a few week’s time hopefully, before the 5th anniversary of Gyamfi’s passing.

It makes for enchanting reading. We learn all about Gyamfi’s beginnings as a footballer in junior and senior school. His crawl from club to club until he arrived at Asante Kotoko, to attain national stardom alongside James Agyei, Kwaku Duah, and others; how he got disaffected with Kotoko but instead of merely leaving the club, formed his own team to contest dangerously for local popularity, against Kotoko, in Kotoko’s own home-base Kumase.

And so on and so forth until he became the national coach of the Black Stars and won the African Cup of Nation three times

    for Ghana!

I can’t wait for a copy of the printed book. Can you?

Not if you are a real football fan say I!

  • Just delete the 1m unqualified names, no need for new voters register – Kwesi Pratt to EC boss

Seasoned journalist, Kwesi Pratt is unconvinced about the reasons given by EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, to support the compilation of a new voters’ register.

The Electoral Commission has argued there are some defects in the current register which render it invalid for the 2020 general elections.

The Commission has therefore scheduled Tuesday, June 30, 2020 to begin a mass registration exercise aimed at compiling a new voters’ register.

The exercise which demands participants to use only the Ghana card and passport to register their names, according to the EC, will help expunge all unqualified names from the register.

To expound on the significance of the new register, Madam Jean Mensa reportedly revealed that there are 1 million ghost names and names of unqualified people in the current register which needs to be cleared.

Addressing the issue on ‘Kokrokoo’ on Peace FM, Mr. Pratt questioned the logic of the EC Chairperson to compile a new register when she has just disclosed the number of people that should be deleted from the register.

According to him, if Madam Jean Mensa knows there are 1 million ineligible names in the current register, then why the need to conduct a new voters’ registration exercise.

“So, she knows the 1 million people on the register; just take them off. If you know 1 million names in the register, how does that become reason for compiling a new voters’ register because all you have to do is to take the names off and we have a clean register,” he stressed.

  • Review voter transfer law to accommodate certain groups Majority leader to EC

The Electoral Commission may have to fashion the voter transfer law to give students the chance to transfer, says the majority leader in parliament Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

He made this statement while addressing the media on the upcoming voters registration exercise.

According to him, although the EC has the legal backing to rule out the transfer of votes in the 2020 elections, there is the need to review it so students are not disenfranchised.

“There are certain constituents who may be allowed to transfer and that has to do with students. Students may register at a location and during the voting, they may be somewhere not by any fault of theirs.”

“So that law should be fashioned out. They may have to have another review of that C.I so students may be allowed to transfer their votes but not ordinary citizens,” he explained.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has ruled out the transfer of votes in the upcoming general elections.

The elections management body says to transfer your vote, one must have registered 12 months prior to the transfer.

“With the compilation of a new voters register in the offing, electorates would be expected to register at where they reside or would be voting in December,” the EC noted.

  • Ghanaians in the USA contemplating on Ghana Soccer Cup competition

Ghana soccer fans in the US love to watch their national teams play, especially the Ghanaian senior national team, the Black Stars.

A Ghana soccer match win means a lot to them, and their fans are very devoted to the extent that they would require therapy anytime their team loses a match.

However, the national teams have not been as regular to the US to play their matches which has prompted a discussion among Ghanaians in the USA to set up the Ghana Soccer Cup competition.

The Ghanaian Cup would be a very important competition for the Ghanaian football fans in the USA where currently many Ghanaians are based and play in the MLS and the universities.

There are also Ghanaians born in the USA who would love to be associated with Ghana while there are several former footballers currently based in the USA.

This, it is envisaged, would become the most important game in the African country outside the country and would usually be an occasion for the Ghanaian national team players to show their tactical skill and teamwork.

It would also be the time for the supporters to cheer on their favorite players, and it is a great way to make sure that Ghanaians in the USA have the chance and opportunity to come together.

The format and form of the Ghana Soccer Cup are still being deliberated but would be held during the summer of every year as the Ghana national team’s most anticipated next match.

Massive preparation would go into via partnerships with television stations.

Fans usually watch training sessions at home. This is to ensure that they are ready for their game just when the Ghana Soccer Cup teams are doing their preparations for the tournament. For a Ghanaian who has not been to a Ghana Soccer Cup, he/she might not know the purpose of this.

Every Ghanaian sports fan is very eager to get a chance to watch his/her favorite team in action, even if it is a soccer match involving kids. The Ghana football cup would be a very special day for all the Ghanaian football fans.

While others go to other sports events and enjoy the competition and excitement, for Ghanaians it is just another opportunity to cheer for their team and to see their favorite Ghanaian players play.

There are many Ghanaian leagues around the country, where fans can watch their favorite players play for their country. To promote the Ghana football cup, there are several teams, which are in various leagues, including one in the United States. This will help a Ghanaian in his/her quest to watch his/her favorite player play.

The Ghana Soccer Cup, unlike the South Africa Cup, is organized in the would-be organised in the USA’s capital city.

Ghana is an independent country located on the West African coast, on the border with neighboring Togo. It is the largest sub-Saharan African country and has a population of about twenty-nine million people.

These guidelines follow the green light for the resumption of non-contact swimming activities by Minister for Youth and Sport, Mr. Isaac Asiamah as earlier announced by the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

In a statement signed by Mr. Muniru Kassim, General Secretary of GSA, it said swimming pool operators should eliminate low ventilated spaces and rooms that do not allow for social distancing.

  • Coronavirus: Do you want to usurp ‘angel’ Obinim’s duties? – Kwesi Pratt mocks Pius Hadzide

Seasoned journalist Kwesi Pratt and Deputy Information Minister, Pius Enam Hadzide, clashed on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ on Tuesday, June 16, 2020 and it was an interesting sight to behold.

The Deputy Information Minister and Kwesi Pratt were commenting on issues regarding the Electoral Commission’s new voters’ registration exercise when the political discussion suddenly turned into a challenge on whether or not Hon. Pius Enam Hadzide has the gift of prophecy.

What transpired was that Kwesi Pratt, making his submissions, argued that there is no need for the registration exercise and feared the EC might expose the participants to the Coronavirus disease.

But Enam Hadzide vehemently disagreed, thereby predicting there will be an overwhelming attendance at the registration centers.

The Deputy Minister was optimistic that a lot of Ghanaians will participate in the exercise.

This he said, is irrespective of the COVID-19 pandemic and the EC’s decision to exclude the voters’ ID card and birth certificate from the exercise.

Pius Enam Hadzide’s prediction utterly shocked Kwesi Pratt and then asked him if he wants to take over the prophetic work of the General Overseer of the International God’s Way Church, Bishop Daniel Obinim, popularly known as Angel Obinim.

”You want to arrogate to yourself the work of Angel Obinim? I am sure should Angel Obinim get wind of what you’re doing today in the studio, he will be very angry with you because you want to usurp his role. Are you going to prophesy here?” he questioned the Deputy Information Minister.

Ghanaian striker Kwasi Okyere Wriedt was an unused substitute as Bayern Munich sealed their eighth consecutive league title on Tuesday night.

Wriedt watched the entire game from the bench as The Bavarians recorded a 1-0 victory over Werder Bremen in a near-empty stadium courtesy Robert Lewandowski’s strike.

The visitors were far from their best against a Werder Bremen side fighting for survival at the other end of the table.

With the game goalless, Bremen’s Maximilian Eggestein went close from distance before Lewandowski’s winner after Kingsley Coman had earlier headed narrowly wide.

The Poland international chested down Jerome Boateng’s chipped pass to net the only goal of the game and seal the league title with two games to spare.

Coman again went close before Davies was sent off with 11 minutes remaining, while Werder Bremen had a late appeal for a penalty for handball turned down.

Werder Bremen remain 17th on the league table, level on points with Fortuna Düsseldorf who currently occupy the relegation play-off spot but now with a game in hand over their rivals.

Twenty-eight-year-old Tshegofatso Pule was eight months pregnant.

The man is due to appear in court later on Wednesday.

After her death, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said the culture of silence around gender-based violence had to end.

Ms Pule went missing on 4 June and four days later a member of the public found her body in the Johannesburg suburb of Roodepoort.

She was hanging from a tree and had been stabbed through the chest.

There was a wave of outrage in South Africa after her death and the hashtag #JusticeForTshego trended on Twitter.

On Saturday President Ramaphosa released a statement denouncing gender-based violence.

As many as 51% of women in South Africa had experienced violence at the hands of someone they were in a relationship with, the president’s statement said.

“Gender-based violence thrives in a climate of silence. With our silence, by looking the other way because we believe it is a personal or family matter, we become complicit in this most insidious of crimes,” President Ramaphosa said.

Following an outcry over a spate of femicides last year, President Ramaphosa said South Africa was one of “the most unsafe places in the world to be a woman”.

  • Baba Iddrisu is second most valued Ghanaian player in Europe

Real Mallorca midfielder Baba Iddrisu has a staggering €45 million release clause in his contract to make him the second most valued Ghanaian player in Europe behind Atletico Madrid star Thomas Partey, GHANAsoccernet.com can report.

The 24-year-old, who was denied a chance to sign for Spanish giants Real Madrid last year, has signed a fresh contract with the club until 2024.

Mallorca have set the monstrous figure to ward off interest from clubs who are keen to sign the talented Ghana international.

Baba’s buyout clause is second to Partey’s €50m release clause at Atletico Madrid.

The decision to increase Baba’s release is aimed at helping to fend off any unwanted interest from afar, as those planning transfer raids are forced to look elsewhere.

Iddrisu looks more likely to sign for Atletico Madrid as a potential replacement for compatriot Thomas Partey, who has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal.

It would be easier for Atletico to reach an agreement with Mallorca than Madrid or any other team in the current scheme of things.

    Convalescent plasma treatment

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) on Monday, June 15, approved the use of convalescent plasma intervention for the treatment of critically ill COVID-19 patients.

Convalescent plasma (CP) is the term used for plasma that is removed from the blood of a person who has recovered from a disease, then transfused into a patient still battling it.

Researchers hope that CP can be given to people with severe COVID-19 to boost their ability to fight the virus. It also might help keep people who are moderately ill from becoming more ill and experiencing COVID-19 complications.

    Life saving drug

Meanwhile, the BBC reports that a cheap and widely available drug called dexamethasone can help save the lives of patients who are seriously ill with COVID-19.

According to the report, the low-dose steroid treatment is a major breakthrough in the fight against the deadly virus as it cuts the risk of death by a third for patients on ventilators, while it cuts deaths by a fifth for those on oxygen.

It said the drug was part of the world’s biggest trial testing existing treatments to see if they also work for coronavirus.

  • Lets audit the auditor Ofori-Atta

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is advocating the audit-the-auditor concept to promote professionalism among auditors in the country.

Speaking at the Ministry of Finance and Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) inauguration of a new Tax Audit and Quality Assurance Unit to ensure a centralised audit planning process and guarantee quality auditing, Mr Ofori-Atta said: “Some auditors in charge of auditing jobs, sometimes get away with unprofessional practices because no one audits their work when they are done, so, many wrongs are buried upon the issuance of their reports never to be resurrected again, and we want to change that”.

“So, there should be an audit to audit the auditor concept”, he suggested, adding: “Once they know their work may be reviewed, they will not compromise on the integrity of their work.”

The unit, according to Mr Ofori-Atta, will work to eliminate corrupt acts in revenue mobilisation in the country.

For his part, the Commissioner-General of the GRA, Reverend Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, said the unit will help the Commission improve its revenue collection.

“If you, as a tax authority, want to be able to wipe away the issue of corruption and integrity, it requires a definite, purposeful act to move ahead, otherwise no matter what you do, we will not be able to get the needed result. Therefore, GRA, as part of our strategic direction aim at coming out with a definite action that will ensure that perception or the reality of corruption, as far audit is concerned, is reduced to a significant level in GRA. Our commitment to this course is absolute,” he stated.

  • CHRAJ discontinues investigations into EC boss’ asset declaration complaint

The Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has ruled in favour of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs Jean Mensa, over a complaint that she refused to declare her assets as required by law.

In its decision on June 4, 2020, CHRAJ held that at the time the complaint was filed on December 12, 2019, the EC boss had not filed her assets with the Auditor-General, but she filed her assets on February 17, 2020, after the complaint was brought to her attention.

Such a move, CHRAJ held, meant the EC boss had not refused to declare her assets as required by Article 286 of the 1992 Constitution.

According to the commission, having established that Mrs Mensa had complied with Article 286 of the 1992 Constitution, it was not necessary to continue with investigations into the complaint by the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA).

That, CHRAJ said, was in line with Section 13 (1)(b) of the CHRAJ Act, 1993 (Act 456) which allowed the commission to refuse to continue to investigate a matter when it appeared that further investigation was not needed.

“Having established in the course of the investigation that the respondent (EC boss) has  now complied with Article 286 albeit late , the commission is of the considered opinion that the appropriate action , having regard to the circumstances of the case, is to refuse to investigate the matter any further as further investigation will not be necessary,” the decision signed by the Commissioner for CHRAJ, Mr Joseph Whittal, stated.

    File your assets early

CHRAJ, however, advised Mrs Mensa not to delay in declaring her assets with the Auditor-General in the future.

“Based on the results of the investigations, the commission strongly advises the respondent (Mrs Mensa) to pay careful attention to her obligations under Article 286 to ensure that the delay that occurred previously in the declaration of her assets and liabilities does not occur,” CHRAJ said.

    Complaint

On December 12, 2019, ASEPA, filed a complaint with a case that Mrs Mensa had failed or refused to declare her assets within three months as stipulated by Article 286 of the 1992 Constitution, although she became the Chairperson of the EC on January 8, 2018.

CHRAJ, after receiving the complaint, wrote to the Auditor-General on December 17, 2019, to ascertain whether or not the EC Chairperson had filed her assets as required by law.

On December 30, 2019, the Auditor-General replied CHRAJ, and stated that Mrs Mensa had not submitted to the Auditor-General a declaration of her assets.

Based on the response from the Auditor -General, CHRAJ established that the complainant had satisfied a basis for the commission to investigate the matter.

    Response

The commission, therefore, forwarded a copy of the complaint to the EC boss to respond to the allegations levelled against her in line with the rules of natural justice.

In her response submitted to CHRAJ on May 12, 2020, Mrs Mensa informed CHRAJ that she had filed her assets and liabilities with the Auditor -General as required by law.

“She attached a copy of the official receipt dated February 17, 2020 from the office of the Auditor-General as evidence that she has submitted her assets declaration form,” CHRAJ stated in its decision. — #GhanaVotes2020

“It’s supposed to be normal for us to give birth without any issues.”

Cases of pregnant women either dying or delivering distressed or stillborn babies started emerging after the curfew was imposed.

The crackdown by the police on those who flouted the curfew meant that many women were afraid to seek medical attention.

Dr Kariuki has been helping women access health care through a phone call.

“Initially, when I was doing it alone, it meant I was handling 30 to 40 calls on a single day,” she said.

  • Atletico Madrid board want Thomas Partey sold – Report

Some members of the Atletico Madrid board want the club to sell Thomas Partey to mitigate the economic effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, GHANAsoccernet.com can report.

Diego Simeone’s side are thought to be open to cashing in on the star, which could pave the way for a move to Arsenal.

The Los Rojiblancos board are ready to sacrifice the talented midfielder for economic gain after the club was hit financially due to the coronavirus shutdown.

Cadena COPE has reported that some senior figures at the club want the Ghana international sold with Arsenal ready to meet his £44.5 million evaluation so they can mitigate the economic effects of post-coronavirus crisi.

The Gunners have stepped up their effort to the Ghanaian star, who is facing an uncertain summer after being linked with a move away from the Wanda Metropolitano.

Arsenal have reportedly tabled a triple-your-money contract offer for the Ghana star.

Partey had been keen to stay with the Spanish giants, but given the huge sums being discussed it’s reported that he’s now considering his options.

Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain have also expressed an interest in the 27-year-old, and could be tempted to make a move.

  • Baba Iddrisu’s agent denies client big career move to Real Madrid

Baba Iddrisu’s representative denied the Ghana midfielder a dream career move to Real Madrid last season, GHANAsoccernet.com can report.

The Los Blancos had the deal to bring the then 23-year-old to the Santiago Bernabéu almost tied up but a problem with the player’re agent scuppered the big career move to the La Liga giants.

Madrid identified the Ghana international as a huge prospect after he helped Real Mallorca pulled off an outstanding turnaround to return to La Liga for the first time in six years to feature in the 2019-20 campaign.

Mallorca hiked the player’s buy-out clause to 45 million Euros following the extension of his contract to 2024.

And coupled with the teams’s inability to reach an agreement with his representative means, Madrid failed in their bid to sign the talented midfielder.

Mallorca’s statement announcing the extension of the player’s contract amplify a strange situation that took place.

“RCD Mallorca and Iddrisu Baba have reached an agreement to extend the footballer’s contract until June 30, 2024. On July 3, the midfielder’s renewal was made official until 2022 after reaching a first agreement. However, both parties continued to negotiate and the new contract involves extending two more seasons the bond and increasing the termination clause to 45 million euros, “the statement read on July 23, 2019.

But it has now emerged that Real Mallorca increased the player’s valuation to 45 million Euros after Madrid encountered problems with the player’s representative.

Now, Iddrisu looks more likely to sign for Atletico Madrid as a potential replacement for compatriot Thomas Partey, who has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal.

It would be easier for Atletico to reach an agreement with Mallorca than Madrid or any other team in the current scheme of things.

The National Identification Authority (NIA) will resume the mass registration which it suspended in the Eastern Region on March 21, 2020, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

An announcement by the authority states that the exercise will take place between June 18 27, 2020.

Also planned, was a countrywide mop-up exercise without the Eastern Region.

The ongoing issuance of the Ghana card, which commenced on Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at 5,635 registration centres across the country and set to continue till Thursday, June 18, 2020, would enable approximately 3,934,073 Ghanaians who could not receive their cards during the mass registration exercise to do so.

But the dead ball specialist has revealed Dr Kofi Kodua Sarpong’s resignation at Kotoko seven years ago scuppered the deal.

  • How radio campaigning may muzzle Uganda’s opposition

The banning of campaign rallies by the Uganda electoral commission ahead of general elections in January 2021 could give the ruling party an advantage over the opposition.

This is because radio remains the most accessible form of media in Uganda and most private stations are owned by ruling party politicians.

Although the public broadcaster, Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC), has channels covering as many local languages and regions as possible, most FM radio stations are privately owned.

The concern is that ruling party candidates will have an unfair advantage over the opposition, with more access and more airtime.

Opposition politician Kizza Besigye sued the UBC after the 2016 election, for denying him airtime – and a court ruled in his favour.

The national broadcaster is obliged to give equal time to presidential candidates, but this does not happen in practice.

Radio stations in rural areas have in the past been raided by security agents, who have pulled shows off air for hosting members of the opposition.

The rallies have been banned to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Candidates will be free to use online and social platforms to campaign, but not everyone has access to those.

It is not yet known if President Yoweri Museveni, who is serving his fifth term of office, will run for another term.

  • Mother of Ken Agyapong’s daughter Anell speaks; reveals family secrets (video)

Araba Dawson-Williams, the mother of one of Kennedy Agyapong‘s daughters has spoken on statements the Assin Central MP made about their daughter.

The Assin Central MP recently narrated how one of his daughters has virtually become a beggar because of her wrong choices.

The daughter, Ken Agyapong revealed, was begging for funds to continue her education after squandering many opportunities he gave her.

According to Ken Agyapong, his daughter dropped out of California Institute of Technology (CIT) while in her third year of her five-year Architecture programme.

The Assin Central MP who was speaking on Oman FM indicated that he was paying $84,000 in school fees every year and was thus not pleased with his daughter’s decision.

The most painful thing to him was the fact that he had just paid half ($42, 000) right before his daughter called him while he was on a plane to China to inform him that she was dropping out.

He also revealed that her daughter had gone into substance abuse and was living a very promiscuous life.

From that time, Kennedy Agyapong added, he cut her off and even used the other half of her school fees for the year to buy a Bentley.

While he did not mention the daughter’s name, it has turned she is Anell Agyapong, a 25-year-old daughter he had with one Fante lady called Araba Dawson-Williams.

Anell’s mother has challenged the Assin Central MP to allow Anell and his other children to go for a test to prove or disprove his claim.

In her rant, Dawson-Williams admitted that she and her daughter were not correct but she knows that worse things happen in Ken Agyapong’s house.

She made a lot of revelations about Ken Agyapong and his household and even vowed to curse him and his other children if he did not retract his statement.

  • South Korea unification minister offers to resign over tensions with North

The South Korean unification minister has offered his resignation over the sharp rise in tensions with the North.

Kim Yeon-chul said he took responsibility for the worsening of inter-Korean relations.

It comes a day after North Korea blew up a symbolic liaison office near the border which was built to improve ties with the South.

The North Korean army meanwhile has said it will send troops into disarmed areas along the border.

Earlier on Wednesday, Pyongyang explained why it blew up the office in Kaesong.

A state media article accused the South of breaking 2018 agreements and behaving like a “mongrel dog” – while the sister of Kim Jong-un accused the South’s president of being a US “flunkey”.

While the South says it remains open for talks, it has condemned the North’s actions as senseless and damaging.

Tensions have sharply escalated in recent weeks – partly prompted by defectors in the South sending propaganda over the border.

    What did North Korea say?

North Korean state media accused the South of “systemically breaching and destroying” recent 2018 agreements, including the Panmunjom Declaration.

The article compared the South’s defence ministry to a “feared mongrel dog” that was “bragging and bluffing, rattling the dialogue partner and stoking [a] confrontational atmosphere”.

It closed with a warning that Tuesday’s explosion could be “a prelude to the total catastrophe of the North-South relations”.

Meanwhile, the North’s military said it would move troops to two symbols of past Korean co-operation: the shut industrial complex in Kaesong and the Mount Kumgang tourist zone on the east coast.

There was also an attack from Kim Yo-jong – the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un – aimed at the South’s President Moon Jae-in.

“The reason the north-south agreements which were so wonderful did not see…even a single step of implementation was due to the noose of the pro-US flunkeyism into which he put his neck.

“Even before the ink on the north-south agreement got dry, he accepted the ‘South Korea-US working group’ under the coercion of his master.”

    How did the South respond?

President Moon’s office on Wednesday said the North’s conduct was senseless – and warned Seoul would no longer accept unreasonable behaviour by the North.

Despite the explosion of the liaison office though, the South says it hopes an agreement from 2018 in Pyongyang can be honoured.

“It is our basic stance that the 19 September military agreement should be complied with without fail to establish peace on the Korean Peninsula and to prevent accidental clashes,” the South’s defence ministry said.

It warned, though, that any military action by the North was being closely monitored, with a “strong response” to any military provocation.

The South also offered to send special envoys to diffuse the current tension, yet the North was quick to reject the idea.

What was the build-up to this?

North Korea on Tuesday blew up a joint liaison office near the border, but on its own territory.

The office was opened in 2018 – a year of intense diplomacy – to help the two sides communicate.

But earlier this month, the North expressed its anger at the cross-border propaganda and then cut all communication with the South.

Pyongyang then escalated tensions further by threatening to move troops back into areas of the border zone it left after the 2018 deal.

The explosion of the liaison office – which was empty – was the most symbolic step so far by the North.

    Why is this happening?

Pyongyang’s anger over cross-border propaganda is the official explanation – yet the propaganda is nothing new.

Activists groups in the South routinely send balloons across the border carrying things like leaflets condemning Pyongyang’s human rights abuses.

Analysts think North Korea might be trying to intentionally escalate the situation to gain more leverage should diplomatic talks resume.

This would be a message aimed both at Seoul and Washington DC, Jeongmin Kim, Seoul Correspondent at NK News, told the BBC.

The destruction of the liaison office “is largely irrelevant to the US-North Korea relations,” she said.

But “it can still serve as a message that the North is willing to withdraw from any widely-publicised goodwill gestures they had made in the past – if they do not get what they want”.

  • Nigeria developing long-term Covid-19 response plan

The Nigerian government says it is developing a three-year action plan for its response to the pandemic.

It also said it is not yet safe to reopen schools and other places where large gatherings could take place.

Health Minister Osagie Ehanire told journalists that the pandemic “will be with us for a long time and we shall keep learning as we go along”.

He said the response plan covers the short, middle, and long term effects of the pandemic.

Tracing, testing, and case management will also be driven by data and evidence.

The minister decried what he described as an escalation in the level of non-compliance with social distancing and wearing face masks especially in markets and motor parks.

  • Ahafo Region Senior High Schools benefit from disinfection against coronavirus

Senior High Schools (SHSs) in the Ahafo Region on Tuesday benefitted from the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service and Zoomlion Ghana Limited disinfection programme against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The schools were Boakye Tromo Senior High Technical School, in the Tano-North District; Presbyterian Senior High School, Bechem; Bebusco SHS; Serwaa Kesse SHS, Duayaw Nkwanta; Bechem School for the Deaf and Blind etc., all in the Ahafo Region.

While some of the headmasters expressed their readiness to welcome back students, others contended that it will be difficult for them to observe, especially, the social/physical distancing protocol.

According to the Headmaster of Boakye Tromo SHS, Mr. Benjamin Kwarteng, he is ready to receive the final-year and Form-two students.

“…and I must stress that we have prepared very well to welcome them back to school,” he said.

However, he pointed out that the school will have a challenge with the social distancing protocol.

“It will be difficult for us to observe the social distancing protocol,” he admitted.

The reason, Mr. Kwarteng explained, is because the school does not have enough space in the various dormitories to be able accommodate all the final-year students, of which government has directed that there should be 25 in each dormitory.

He therefore used the opportunity to appeal to the traditional council and municipal chief executive for the area to come to their aid.

That notwithstanding, he commended Zoomlion for the exercise.

At the Presbyterian SHS, the Assistant Headmaster-Domestic, Mr. Michael Boamah Gyamfi, admonished the students who are scheduled to come back on Monday, June 22 to comply with all the COVID-19 protocols.

He advised parents against visiting their children while in school for the eleven weeks that they will be there.

He also highlighted that his school will have some difficulties enforcing the social distancing protocol.

For her part, the Principal of Bechem School for the Deaf and Blind, Mrs. Alice Oppong Adubia, made a passionate appeal for central government to assist them with Veronica buckets, hand sanitisers, nose masks etc.

“Because we use signs to communicate, we are appealing for government to help provide us with special face masks without which it will be very challenging for us to teach,” she said.

  • ‘I don’t think Tony Yeboah wanted to be captain at all cost’- MND Jawula

Former Ghana Football Association Chairman, Alhaji MND Jawula seems to disagree with the notion that two of Ghana’s former players, Abedi Ayew Pele and Anthony Yeboah were fighting over the captaincy.

After almost three decades when Ghana failed to extend its African Cup of Nations (AFCON) titles from four to five, the discussion about the captaincy saga between three times African Footballer of the Year Abedi Pele and two times Bundesliga top scorer Anthony Yeboah does not seem to be ending.

Anthony Yeboah, some weeks ago, revealed that he was hurt when the Black Stars handlers made Anthony Baffoe the captain in the absence of Abedi Pele in the 1992 AFCON final against Cote d’Ivoire but insisted that he had no problem with Abedi Pele.

Wadding in on the discussion, the new Chairman for the Ghana Premier League Board in an interview on GTV sports+’s ‘Beyond The Pitch’ said there was nothing like a rift between the two.

“People used to say these things but I never saw it. Both Tony Yeboah and Abedi Pele told me that their wives were very good friends and it’s true; their wives were good friends.”

“People have a way that they put things but I don’t think Tony Yeboah wanted to be captain at all cost because he had a lot of respect for Abedi Pele and everyone played their style. One was a tremendous striker and the other was a tremendous midfielder.” MND Jawula said.

Ghanaian rapper, D’Black isn’t amused at all about how much Ghanaians stranded in the United States of America would need to have in order to find their way back home.

So many Ghanaians have been left stranded in the United States of America due to Coronavirus as they are unable to return home.

Based on a post by D’Black, it seems Ghanaians currently in the United States of America who would want to come back home would need between 17, 000 and 24,000 Ghana cedis before they can do so.

For those who would be on an Economy flight and lodge in a 3-star hotel for a mandatory quarantine, they would need 17,000 Ghana cedis.

For those who would want to consider a Business class and a 5-star hotel for 14-days of mandatory, 24,000 Ghana cedis is needed.

In this regard, D’Black has made it categorically clear to President Akufo Addo that majority of Ghanaians stranded in the United States of America cannot afford to spend between 17,000 and 24,000 Ghana cedis just to return to Ghana.

  • I have a 12-bedroom house and spends GHC20,000 in a club – Ghanaian Musician

It’s sometimes confusing when Ghanaian artistes complain that there isn’t money in the industry.

Is it because they are not aware of how to make money through music?

Haven’t they learnt the business side of music or don’t they have management team members who would be able to help them in that regard?

Interestingly a Ghanaian artiste who goes by the name Oseikrom Sikani ,who is relatively unknown seems to have so much wealth even though none of his songs is popular yet.

Speaking to Zionfelix in an exclusive interview, he has indicated that he has been able to build a 12-bedroom house which also has three living rooms.

He has also disclosed that a necklace that he uses also costs 50,000 cedis .

Interestingly, he states that he is able to spend up to GHC20,000 whenever he steps into a club to have some fun.

If Oseikrom Sikanii is able to spend such amounts of money, how much more our mainstream artistes.
