  • Prisoners and diaspora allowed to vote in Ugandan election

The High Court in Uganda has ruled that prisoners and citizens in the diaspora should be allowed to participate in elections.

Lawyer Stephen Kalali filed the petition two years ago and the ruling was delivered on Wednesday.

He argued that excluding these two groups was a violation of their fundamental rights.

The electoral commission had argued that there was no legal framework which provided for voting while in the diaspora and in places of confinement.

The judge, however, said that by excluding these categories of people from voting, the Electoral Commission was acting contrary to the fundamental rights and freedoms in the constitution.

Uganda is due to hold a general election in 2021.

The Coronavirus pandemic has already heavily affected the preparation for that election, with mass rallies banned.

  • Nigeria and Cameroon declared polio free

The World Health Organization (WHO) has certified Nigeria and Cameroon to be free of polio, a crippling disease that usually affects children under five.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are now the only countries with cases of the wild polio virus.

The UN health agency is expected to formally present Nigeria with a certificate and also declare Africa free of the wild polio virus.

Nigeria’s head of primary health care agency Dr Faisal Shuaib described the achievement as a “proud moment for us and indeed all Nigerians”.

Cameroon’s Health Minister Malachie Manaouda had on Wednesday announced that the country had been certified free of polio.

Health experts in the country welcomed the development but urged caution.

For a country to be declared polio-free it must ensure high immunisation coverage and prove there have been no transmissions for at least three consecutive years.

It should also maintain a surveillance and outbreak preparedness system.

  • Dont neglect your wives after they have given birth Counselor Lutterodt advises men

Ghanaian marriage and relationship expert, Counselor George Lutterodt has advised men to make their wives a top priority in their marriages for a peaceful coexistence.

According Counselor Lutterodt in a video sighted by GhBase Entertainment, most men neglect their wives as soon as they give birth which is a bad practice.

” As a father, I can understand the need to give undivided attention to our children but what we must never do is neglect the needs of our wives in the process. They also need love, attention, pampering and gifts to feel wanted. Most of the times we concentrate too much on taking care of our kids that we forget that we have wives and this is how adultery begins.” Counselor Lutterodt noted.

He furthered that men who refuse to take care of their wives will live to regret it after the children grow and move out of the house.

  • Trump’s bid to end Obama-era immigration policy ruled unlawful

The US Supreme Court has ruled against President Donald Trump’s bid to end a programme that protects hundreds of thousands of young immigrants from deportation.

The justices upheld lower court rulings that found his move to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Daca) programme was “unlawful”.

It protects “Dreamers”, who entered the US without documents as children.

The Trump administration has sought to end the Obama-era policy since 2017.

The Supreme Court took up the case after lower courts ruled that the Trump administration did not adequately explain why it was ending the programme, criticising the White House’s “capricious” explanations.

On Thursday, the justices voted 5-4 to uphold the lower courts’ findings that the administration’s order violated the Administrative Procedure Act, which says a government action cannot be “arbitrary, capricious, an abuse of discretion or otherwise not in accordance with law” or “unsupported by substantial evidence”.

  • Coronavirus: Brouhaha at University of Ghana Medical School over student agreement

Students at the University of Ghana Medical School have expressed concern over the wording of a new document they are required to fill amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some of the students in an interaction with Dailymailgh.com said signing the document puts them at risk during their clinical rotation in this period of coronavirus.

According to the document, which is mandatory for every student to sign, the students are to note that they “face the same risk as full-time Health Workers” during their clinical rotations and will “agree to continue my training under these circumstances which will be the same during my professional life.”

Some of the students said they also deserve insurance as other health professionals during the clinicals and want authorities to take a second look at the document.

Below is a write-up from one of the students to Dailymailgh.com:

On 18th June, 2020, there was an orientation session organized for students of the University of Ghana Medical School which was focused on briefing the students concerning the COVID-19 situation and how to adapt to the new normal.

Students were required to do thorough handwashing and temperatures were checked before entry. In the course of the meeting, the Dean of the Medical School (Prof. Margaret Lartey) made mention of a document to be signed by students. What was problematic about this document was the first and second paragraph which read: “I (Insert Full Name) a level 600 Medical Student recognize and acknowledge that during my Clinical Rotations, I face the same risk as full-time Health Workers. I agree to continue my training under these circumstances which will be the same during my professional life”.

The document does not make mention of insurance cover for students and when asked, the dean evaded the question about insurance and stated that if anyone did not feel comfortable with signing the documents, that individual can defer the course and come back when they are comfortable.

Personally, that was the first time I came across such a document and the words of the dean indirectly forced me and I believe many others to succumb to the pressure of signing the document just to avoid complications with the school authorities.

I believe that we should have been told about this document and given ample time to go through the document and analyze its legal implications as the intelligent students we are taught to be. Our questions about insurance should not be dismissed by the authorities and the school should not leave us to fend for ourselves when it comes to insurance because we are exposed to the same risk as all health workers (if not more) and for that an insurance package should be made available for students in case someone comes down with COVID-19.

I stand with and speak on behalf of those who also see the unfairness with regard to this stance taken by the school and I hope to see that students are also given an insurance package specifically for COVID-19 aside the basic healthcare provided by the school clinic. We are all human so let us humanely treat each other with the respect we all deserve. After all, we should all be equal under the law; some people should not be more equal than others.

  • State add more charges against Dr. Duffour and eight others

The state has added to the charges against Dr Kwabena Duffour former Minister of Finance and Governor of the Bank of Ghana, and eight others for their alleged roles leading to the collapse of Unibank Limited (a commercial bank).

The accused were initially facing 68 charges but those charges were increased on Thursday to 71.

The state led by Mrs Yvonne Atakorah Obuobisah, the Director for Public Prosecution (DPP) prayed an Accra High Court that the old charges against the accused should be dropped whiles new ones were read out to them.

The court therefore read out the charges which included falsification of a Unibank account, conspiracy and defrauding by false pretenses.

The initial charges of 68 charges included, fraudulent breach of trust, money laundering, dishonesty receiving and falsification of accounts, and conspiracy to commit crime.

Dr Kwabena Duffour, Hoda Holdings Limited, Johnson Pandit Asiama, Kwabena Duffour II, Below Nyarko Dadzie-Dennis, Elsie Dansoa Kyereh, Jeffery Amon, Benjamin Ofori, and Kwadwo Opoku Okoh were all admitted to their former bail of a Gh¢60,000,000.00, with three sureties each, two of whom must be justified for each accused.

The court presided over by Justice Bright Mensah, adjourned the matter to July 16 and 17, for Case Management Conference.

This was after the defence lawyers have prayed the court to give them ample time to peruse the voluminous documents filed by the state.

The accused have been accused of misappropriating some GH¢5.7 billion leading to the fall of Unibank in 2017.

  • Tree kills driver in parked car in Kumasi

A motorist was killed in a freak accident when a tree fell on his car while he parked his vehicle amidst high winds, witnesses said.

The man only identified as Alhaji was pronounced dead at the scene near the Asanteman Senior High School, on Thursday.

He was said to have parked his vehicle while awaiting passengers when the tree fell just before 17:00 GMT, officers who were at the scene told Dailymailgh.com.

Though two of his colleagues escaped unhurt, it was too late for him to do so as he sat on the boot of his Opel Astra car with registration AW 7248-14.

It took the intervention of some chainsaw operators to cut through the fallen Neam tree to recover the body which had been trapped in the mangled vehicle.

Police later declared him dead at the scene. The incident caused heavy vehicular traffic on the busy road.

The body of the deceased was sent to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for preservation and autopsy.

Though the Suame Divisional Police Command has described the incident as an “unnatural death,” it is, however, investigating the case.

  • Coronavirus scare hits National Cardio Centre

Staff of the National Cardiothoracic Centre at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital are living in fear following the recording of a number of coronavirus cases there.

Their worry stems from the fact that management has defied advise to make room for isolation to take care of patients who known to have contracted the virus which has affected well over 11, 000 in the country.

Credible information has it that two weeks ago, coronavirus infection case was recorded at the dialysis unit of the Centre which led to a fumigation of the place on Sunday, June 7.

This was to have also necessitated the screening of staff to ascertain whether or not some had contracted the virus.

When the report came out, sources say it turned out that 22 staff at the Cardio Centre which is touted a centre of excellence were said to have tested positive, leading to their isolation and subsequent quarantine.

Just this past Monday, June 15, another patient who was on admission there was said to have tested positive and has since been transferred to a treatment centre.

Sometime in April, a patient said to have been referred to the Cardio Centre from the Medical Block of the Korle Bu hospital reportedly died there of the virus.

This is what is putting fear in workers there who think their safety is being put at risk considering the fact that they are exposed.

  • John Mahama speaks on running mate and manifesto

One of the challenges the New Patriotic Party (NPP) throws at John Mahama and the New Democratic Congress is on running mate and manifesto.

NPP has been teasing NDC with John Mahama’s running mate and manifesto. NPP has been accusing NDC of not having competent people in their party to support their flag bearer to convince and win election.

And with respect to manifesto, NPP has been teasing NDC that, their inability to produce a practical and convincing manifesto is because they don’t have anything good path to lead the country into.

On Facebook live today (18/06/19), John Mahama gave a hint on the above accusations and teases from the NPP.

Former prez. John Mahama made it known in his presentation without a specific date. But he says within a month the announcement of running mate and the launching of manifesto will be made. He choose the month of August.

He made it known that the selection of running mate will follow after consultation with the elders of the party.

  • Coronavirus: FDA issues warning against UK breakthrough drug dexamethasone

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a warning against the use of dexamethasone for the prevention of the novel coronavirus disease.

Dexamethasone, a steroid drug, has been hailed in the UK as a breakthrough in the fight against coronavirus.

However, in a statement issued on Wednesday, June 17, 2020, the FDA explained that the drug is shown to be beneficial only in preventing some deaths in COVID-19 patients on ventilators and oxygen and not asymptomatic or mild to moderately ill patients.

“Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid and is classified as a Prescription-Only-Medicine and should only be prescribed and used under medical supervision in COVID-19 or for any other disease,” the FDA statement indicated.

The FDA also explained that dexamethasone suppresses the immune system, and in the UK study, this effect was beneficial and needed in order to suppress the clinically problematic excessive immune reaction in severe and critical COVID-19 cases.

It said dexamethasone should therefore not under any circumstances be used for the prevention of COVID-19 as its potential to suppress the immune system will counteract the body’s natural function to fight against COVID-19 and other infections in long-term use.

“The public is therefore cautioned against the purchase, stocking and use of dexamethasone or any other corticosteroid medicine unless certified by healthcare professionals,” the FDA warned.

  • Ghanaian Times: Coronavirus and stranded Ghanaians abroad

The government on Tuesday announced the evacuation of at least 1,100 Ghanaians stranded in foreign lands back home.

They were stranded in different locations across the world following the closure of borders amid the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, 230 of the stranded Ghanaians were flown in from Kuwait, 77 from Nigeria, 41 being students who were on an exchange programme in Washington D.C in the United States of America (USA), 154 arrived from Dubai while 141 students arrived on a bus from Benin.

The rest were flown in from Egypt, South Africa, Israel, Burkina Faso and China.

Briefing the media in Accra, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, said, the stranded Ghanaians were brought into the country between May and early part of this month.

She said about 250 more Ghanaians stranded in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are also expected in the country soon.

An additional 400 arrived in the country yesterday and later on June 21 from China while 196 are expected from Lebanon.

Furthermore, she said other stranded Ghanaians would be airlifted from China, New York and Washington both in the United States (U.S) by the end of the month.

Whilst we commend the government for facilitating the safe arrival of Ghanaians from abroad into the country, we regret that the processes of evacuating our compatriots from abroad has been impeded by the high cost of hotels to accommodate those who have arrived to undergo mandatory quarantine.

According to Madam Botchwey, the exercise has also been dogged with determining persons considered to be destitute amongst the evacuees.

These issues are likely to present the government additional burden apart from the fight against the disease that is wreaking havoc across the world.

The evacuation of Ghanaians across the world is not an easy task and we believe that there are many others scattered around the world who would wish that they are evacuated back home but help has not reached them yet.

Although the Ghanaian Times is aware arrangements are being made to ensure that all others are brought back home, we believe it is time institutions and individuals which have facilities offer support to the government by giving out their facilities as places for quarantine.

As had been stated above already, the high cost of hotels to accommodate those who have been evacuated to undergo mandatory quarantine has become a burden that government cannot carry alone.

We ask all affected citizens both home and abroad to cooperate with the government as it undertakes the exercise in a manner which will ensure all stranded outside the borders of the country return home safely without exposing the whole populace to COVID-19.

  • I will build and deploy a new hospital ship when elected – Mahama

Former President John Mahama is intensifying his campaign for a comeback in 2021 with a promise to build a hospital ship to improve healthcare delivery if elected on December 7, 2020.

“We will build a new Onipa Nua Hospital Ship and deploy it to provide medical services to the inaccessible riverine and fishing communities on the inland Volta waterways,” Mr Mahama said.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate made the promise on Thursday, June 18, 2020, during one of his Facebook Live sessions.

He made the promise to build and deploy the hospital ship after criticizing President Nana Akufo-Addo for abandoning some of his innovative policies that were aimed at improving healthcare delivery in the country.

He blamed the current administration for abandoning the Onua Do Mobile Vans that his administration introduced in 2015.

“These were vans meant to provide medical outreach services…in underserved and hard to reach areas of the country. But the vans have been left at the vagaries of the weather,” he stated.

He said the vans were designed to deliver specialized services in ophthalmology, dentistry, mammograms and general medicine by visiting rural and far-to-reach communities of the country but they have not been put to that use since he left office.

He said since the Akufo-Addo government has deliberately abandoned the specialized vans at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

He, therefore, promised to rehabilitate these dilapidated mobile clinics and expand the number to care for all 16 regions of the country to enable government “take healthcare to the doorsteps of all our people, even in the remotest parts of our country”.

One of the highly-rated new signings for Kumasi Asante Kotoko Christopher Nakai Nettey has revealed that COVID-19 has stalled plans he had for his football career.

Speaking to Power FM 97.9 sports in Accra, the former Attram Visser lateral back said he was in one of his best forms which he was hoping to use to announce his presence in the top flight of Ghana League

Before the global coronavirus pandemic hit Ghana premier league, Nettey established himself as Maxwell Konadu’s first-choice right-back, featuring in 14 matches.

Christopher who made a transfer move of thirty-five thousand dollars ($35000.00) from Attram De Visser Soccer Academy to the porcupine Warriors was adjudged the most valuable player (MVP) in their league game against Ashanti Gold in Kumasi, and earn nominations for Kotoko player of the month in January and February.

  • Ex-Ghana coach Appiah claims prejudice in salary delay

Former Ghana coach Kwasi Appiah has said he is being treated in a way no white coach in Africa would be as he awaits salary arrears totalling nearly $200,000 from his time in charge of the Black Stars.

Appiah’s second spell in charge of Ghana, which started in April 2017, ended at the turn of the year.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports says it will pay the money “soon”, blaming the delay on the coronavirus pandemic.

“I was owed money since August 2019 when there was no Covid-19,” Appiah told BBC Sport Africa. “Would they owe a white coach for 11 months?”

The 59-year-old, who has previously said he feels ‘disrespected’ by the way his case is being handled, says he is owed $185,000, most of which covers five months’ unpaid salary.

“(My predecessor) Avram Grant was not owed more than a month when his contract ended,” Appiah explained.

The reason the Israeli, who led the Black Stars between 2014-2017, was not paid at that time was because he had yet to file a report on the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations on time, but his arrears were swiftly settled once he did.

In recent times, some white coaches in Africa – such as Nigeria’s Gernot Rohr – have not been paid on time while others, such as Botswana coach Adel Amrouche, who holds both Algerian and Belgian citizenship, is still awaiting payment from an old job.

Appiah simply wants this practice of late payments to just end for good.

“It’s not right and should not be encouraged – irrespective of whether (the coach is) local or foreign,” he added.

BBC Sport Africa understands that it is not just Appiah awaiting salary for his role with Ghana, but the country’s current national youth team coaches as well.

Both the U17 and U23 coaches declined to comment but U20 coach Karim Zito confirmed that he is owed money.

Zito, a former international, was first drafted into the coaching set-up of Ghana’s youth teams in 2013 when he was assistant coach for the Under-23 team and says this is a familiar tale.

“We had only collected our salaries for three months when we received a letter stating that we will no longer be paid – no reason was given,” Zito told BBC Sport Africa.

“I was appointed as coach of the (Under-20) national team in January this year but I am being owed. I will attribute the failure of to pay our salaries to the coronavirus pandemic.”

    Coronavirus claim

Appiah’s outstanding payment of $185,000 equates to five times his monthly salary of $35,000 in addition to a $10,000 bonus for beating Sao Tome prior to his contract expiring in December 2019.

Kofi Asare Brako, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Youth and Sports, has blamed the failure to pay the outstanding salary on the coronavirus pandemic causing a financial constraint on the ministry.

“The salary of the head coach of the Black stars has always been paid through a sponsorship package, and it is unfortunate this has now dragged into the period of the coronavirus pandemic,” Kofi Asare told BBC Sport Africa.

“We have paid him for the two-year contract period of 24 months. What is left is the extended contract period of eight months, of which we have already paid three months.”

“We are still in touch with the former coach and in no time we will pay him. Soon, all money will be paid to Appiah.”

The coach, who also led Ghana at the 2014 World Cup, has told BBC Sport he is prepared to take his claim to football’s world governing body Fifa if he does not receive his money soon.

“I gave the GFA a three-month deadline (earlier this year) but neither the GFA nor the Sports ministry have met with me,” Appiah said.

    Brako has refuted Appiah’s claims.

“I can say categorically that the chief accountant of the Ministry of Youth and Sports has been in constant communication with Appiah,” Brako added.

“We are still in talks with him. If we have to structure a payment plan, we will do that but if he insists we have to pay all at once we have no choice but to do it.”

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has not given an exact timeframe as to when Appiah’s salary will be paid but Brako assures it will paid ‘soon’.

Appiah’s contract was not renewed following his team’s disappointing outing at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations where the Black Stars exited in the Round of 16.

Ghana were the first team to ever reach four Nations Cup titles but have not won the trophy since 1982.

  • JE Sarpong’s ‘wee’ comment unfortunate – Yusif Chibsah

Former Asante Kotoko captain and FIFA football agent, Yusif Chibsah believes that the weed(marijuana) comments from veteran coach J.E Sarpong has the tendency of bringing the already tainted Ghana Premier League brand.

Coach J.E Sarpong some days ago alleged that over 60 percent of Division One League and Ghana Premier League players are weed addicts.

He went further to say that ” the late Ghana FA chairman Ben Koufie one time he had to buy marijuana for Robert Mensah before he kept the post for the Black Stars”.

Adding his voice to the discussion, Chibsah who is the spokesperson for the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana(PFAG) in an interview with GhanaWeb said the comment from the veteran coach is just unfortunate.

“It’s quite unfortunate, I’m not here to condemn what he said or to testify that it is true or not but my point is that it is an open secret. Even in Europe, you might have players who smoke weed.”

“But here we are in a country that we’ve gone through a lot of issues Anas expose, Normalization Committee and now COVID-19. We have gone through a lot and we are now trying to rebrand the product- Ghana Premier League and then this comment comes.”

“If you weigh the options, such comments do more harm than good to the players and the Ghana Premier League. There could have been a better way to channel this issue than the way coach Sarpong said it blatantly on air. We are in contact with the GFA’s medical team to put in measures that will deter the players from such an act.” Yussif Chibsah told GhanaWeb.

  • Shutting down opposition media and granting license to family, friends not democratic Sulemana Braimah

Executive Director of the Media Foundation West Africa, Sulemana Braimah, has said shutting down media houses belonging to opposition parties and then granting frequency licenses of affected media houses to families, friends does not justify democracy.

According to him, the country can only strive if there are a diversity of voices that speak for or against the ruling or opposition government.

His comment comes after reports alleging that the National Communications Authority (NCA), the broadcasting and telecommunication frequency regulator in Ghana, has given the frequency of closed down Accra-based radio stations, Radio Gold and Radio XYZ, to a new one named Asaase Radio.

Radio Gold and Radio XYZ were shut down in May 2019 with the regulator NCA, indicating closure of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) affiliated media houses was carried out in accordance with Regulations 65 (1) of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011, L. I. 1991, which states that “a person shall not use a radio frequency without authorization from the Authority.”

Meanwhile, the new radio station with the frequency 99.5FM is alleged to belong to members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) even though the names of the owners have not been disclosed.

Sulemana Braimah, in a Facebook post, described the move by the NPP as “undemocratic” on the side of government to shut down the broadcast media firms only to give out their frequencies to a new one allegedly owned by family and friends.

“Democracy is built NOT by shutting down opposition broadcast media and granting frequencies to family and friends. Democracy thrives on diversity of voices, not monologue praise-singing by allies of a ruling party,” he said.

  • Being strict on club licensing rules may destroy Ghana football- MND Jawula

Chairman for the Ghana Premier League Board, Alhaji MND Jawula has advised against the use of strict measures in getting clubs to follow the rules put in place by the Ghana Football Association’s Club Licensing Board.

The Club Licensing Board headed by Dr. Kwame Baah-Nuakoh was keen on getting all the 18 Premier League clubs to meet at least half of the rules before the commencement of the 2019/20 season which has been halted by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Emmanuel Dasoberi, the Secretary of the board, several weeks ago disclosed to GhanaWeb that only International Allies FC who were able to meet all the requirements of the board before the start of the league.

Alhaji MND Jawula, who was formerly the Chairman of the Ghana Football Association in an interview with ‘Beyond The Pitch’ which airs every Wednesday at 2 pm on GTV sports+ said pushing the rules too much may deter people from the game as they invest with their own incomes.

“I have been of the view that if we push too hard, we shall destroy football. This is because Ghana is not lucky, we don’t have sponsorships as other countries have.”

“In most of these countries, it’s about sponsorships, you get a lot of companies who come on board and pay players to the extent that they will be comfortable but in Ghana people don’t have that much and it seems the concept of investing in football is not in the books of the companies.”

“So if we want to get the best stadia, the best salary structure for players, it will take some time and if you insist on it, you are not likely to get people who will not show interest in football again because people use their own income to invest in football.” he told ‘Beyond The Pitch’.

  • New inmates are screened, isolated for 14 days Ghana Prison Service

The Public Relations Officer for the Ghana Prison Service, Superintendent Courage Atsem, has stressed that safety measures have been employed to prevent the possible transmission of coronavirus from new inmates to those who are already facing their jail term in prison.

Supt. Courage Atsem stated that new admissions are screened and go through the 14-day mandatory isolation period before they join other inmates.

In an interview with GhanaWeb, Supt. Atsem said, “We have all new admissions screened for COVID-19 and thereafter quarantined for 14 days. That has been the practice, for now, it has been challenging because of the prisons are congested therefore finding the space for isolation was a bit of a challenge.”

Mr. Atsem again disclosed that the prison administration has created 7 new prison facilities across the country to admit new prisoners in this time when Ghana is battling with the Coronavirus pandemic.

“The prison administration in conjunction with other players in the Criminal Justice System has come out with seven selected prisons purposely for new admissions, by this arrangement we might be minimizing the risk of transmitting the virus to a larger number of inmates,” he reiterated.

With overcrowding and poor ventilation being a major challenge in some prisons, there are fears of an outbreak of COVID-19 cases behind bars. Many have called on the government to consider a short-term plan to reduce the number of inmates in each cell.

Speaking on the plans to address the issue of overcrowding Supt. Courage Atsem said that, “pardon is one of the ways to decongest prisons, it is the prerogative of the president, so anytime he decides to do it. It will be a welcome development. They are other measures too except that those are rather for medium to long-term purposes.”

Meanwhile, data provided by the Ghana Prison Service (GPS) revealed that the total number of inmates across all prisons in Ghana stood at 13,882 as of June 15, 2020.

New data available to GhanaWeb disclosed that three inmates have so far tested positive for coronavirus with two fully recovered. However, the third patient is currently receiving treatment at an isolation center.

Also, the GPS added that all six Prison Officers whose test results came out positive have recovered.

  • Thomas Partey features as Atletico Madrid makes light work of Osasuna

Ghanaian international Thomas Partey featured for Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night as they cruised past Osasuna with an emphatic 5-0 win in the Spanish La Liga.

After failing to grab all 3 points last weekend when the 2019/2020 league season restarted, Diego Simeone’s men finally got the job done today and in fine fashion as well.

The matchday 27 clash between the two teams played at the Estadio El Sadar saw Joao Felix breaking the deadlock after 29 minutes of play when he proved clinical in front of the goal.

Despite some end to end action for the remaining minutes of the half, neither side could get on the scoresheet as the first half ended 1-0 in favour of the away team.

Atletico Madrid returned from the break and played with some swagger as they scored four times. Joao Felix found the back of the net on the 56th minute to complete his brace before making way for Thomas Partey on the 69th minute.

Later on, a goal each from Marcos Llorente, Alvaro Morata, and Yannick Carrasco added to the woes of Osasuna as they lost 5-0 at the end of the 90 minutes.

For the minutes he played, Thomas Partey looked in good form with his precise passing and good reading of the game to intercept passes.

The hardworking midfielder remains a key member of the Atletico Madrid team but looks set to switch to the English Premier League at the end of the season to play for Arsenal.

  • Science or Luck: Laryea Kingston talks about penalty taking

Former Ghana international, Laryea Kingston, has waded into the age-long debate about penalty taking in football being much more about strategy or sheer luck.

According to the ex-Black Stars winger, the art of taking penalties amounts to luck, and its therefore not necessary spending time practicing it.

The topic of penalties often evokes painful memories for Ghanaians.

After winning the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in 1982, Ghana has had major heartbreaks in competitions following defeats via penalty shootouts -with the only exception being in 2009, when the Black Satellites won the ultimate at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

The Black Stars lost the AFCON 1992 and 2015 titles to Ivory Coast via shootout and as well missed out on being the first African team to make the world cup semi-final stage after suffering elimination in the last 8 in 2010 following a penalty shootout defeat to Uruguay.

These occurrences and others have led to conclusions that Ghana has been unlucky with penalties.

Speaking on the Football Made In Ghana show on Citi TV, Kingston said“Some people think penalties are between you and the goalkeeper but it is the most difficult thing in football,” Laryea Kingston said.

“Sometimes you may get the decision right but your decision may be the same as that of the goalkeeper. So if you have noticed, all the great players in the world have missed crucial penalties in their career,” he remarked.

“For me, I do not see it as very important to practice it because it is not scientific. Sometimes you will go in with an advantage and still lose. An example is the 2015 AFCON against Ivory Coast. We led by two and you expect it to be easy but we lost. If practicing it and perfecting it makes you win then we should have won that. So it is not scientific,” he concluded.

Laryea Kingston played for Ghana at 2 Nations Cup tournaments (2006 and 2008).

Overall the 49-year old amassed 41 caps for the Black Stars scoring 6 goals in a national team career running from March 2005 to October 2009.

He currently works as a coach with the famed Right to Dream Academy.

  • Safety measures must be put in place before league resumes – Emmanuel Akuoko

The Ghana Football Association has set June 30 as the date they decide the future of the league.

“We should not rush to resume football now, it is up to the GFA,”

Striking it out, the judge said, “all the accused persons are discharged of the old charges but their plea will be taken for the new charges.”

In a statement signed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the lead organisation, Ideapath Consult, Mr Lukeman Tahiru and released to the Ghanaian Times, the consortium appealed to the government to prescribe tax holidays for importers of sanitary pad.

It also encouraged government to invest in the manufacturing of sanitary pads locally as well as promote local entrepreneurs who would venture into such production in order to reduce cost.

The statement noted with concern, the spate at which some young girls had fallen victim to unscrupulous men in their bid to secure money to purchase basic items such as sanitary pads.

“Menstruation is not an option. It is a normal biological process for women yet low-income families are heavily hit as parents and guardians are unable to afford sanitary pads for their wards” it stated, adding that the situation was more pronounced in the Upper West Region where poverty was widespread.

The consortium opined that if taxes on sanitary pads were slashed it would make the product affordable for females and would go a long way to reduce social vices such as child prostitution with its resultant problem of teenage pregnancy and school dropout cases

“Many girls in this region, particularly in the rural areas, according to our preliminary survey stay out of school when they are menstruating and that is because they do not have sanitary pads to keep them safe and confident,” it noted.

The statement further lamented that the problem was compounded by the colour of the school uniforms being used by a particular school, indicating that girls with bright coloured uniforms would opt out of school for a whole week during their menstrual period for fear of soiling themselves in public.

“The impact of this on the girl child is enormous as it affects her academic performance and kills her confidence as well,” the statement expressed and added a plea to government to abolish the taxes as soon as possible.
