  • Post Coronavirus: Strengthen local production base – Policy Analyst

Mr Maudo Jallow, Policy Analyst at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change has said “if we are to make any progress in the post COVID-19, there is the need for the African continent to strengthen its local production base.

He said that would create employment and contribute to the continent’s economy.

Mr Jallow speaking at the Ghana Young Entrepreneurs Roundtable (GYER) on the Sustainable Development Goals’ (SDGs) Virtual Conference on Zoom said the COVID-19 pandemic had refocused attention to local production, which was laudable.

The Virtual Conference was on the theme: “Post-COVID 19 and SDG Targets: Re-sharpening strategies to Match the Goals.”

The conference brought together representatives in government, private sector, development and advocacy setting to discuss how achievement of SDGs can still be realised.

He said with the pandemic, there was the need to think about opportunities based on sectors including; Fintech, Digital Education and Digital Health.

The Policy Analyst said even as entrepreneurs look at the SDGs and aspire to them, they should not forget that “this is the time to restructure our economies to reduce the inequalities and create jobs.

“We have seen high growth figures in economies yet citizens do not realize these growths”.

He said it was an opportunity to work together as entrepreneurs to collaborate on things, while restructuring for a brighter future.

He said collaboration would continually enable entrepreneurs to find solutions better to most of their challenges and problems they encounter in their line of work.

Madam Alima Bawah, Co-founder Cowtribe Inc said, “If we approach the SDGs as we are approaching COVID-19, we will attain higher heights.”

She said the SDGs were a pandemic on its own as even hunger kills more.

Madam Bawah called on the Ministry of Business Development to develop a strong startup ecosystem to support young entrepreneurs in the country.

She urged Governments to consciously invest and expand access telecommunications infrastructure to rural communities.

She said the country needed to commercialise agriculture and open at various parts of the country with more infrastructure at farm gates, especially at the Northern Ghana.

She urged NGOs to provide skills training and capacity of people than rather giving them free things to support them.

Mr Dela Gadzanku, Regional Chair, Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), (Eastern/Volta Region) said the Association was available to assist any startup to formalise their business.

“We cannot do any meaningful business without formalising our businesses,” he said.

He urged them to take advantage of Government’s stimulus package to support their businesses and advised them to utilise the resources well.

  • NPP man regrets curses in river

One of the four New Patriotic Party (NPP) members in the Juaben Constituency that cursed their party leaders in a river has regretted his weird action.

Ransford Osei, an NPP Polling Station Executive at Juaben Anglican, and three other party members did the unthinkable by cursing their party leadership recently.

The four aggrieved party members had complained bitterly that their political idol had unfairly been disqualified from the upcoming NPP parliamentary polls at Juaben.

Instead of following laid-down party rules to make their voice heard, the four party members rather slaughtered a sheep in a river at Juaben to deal with some NPP leaders. As a result, Mr. Osei and the three other party members have since been suspended by the party to serve as a deterrent to other party members with a similar mindset.

He has now regretted his action and admitted that they had no right to call on a river deity, slaughter a sheep and rain curses on their party leaders no matter how badly they thought their man was being treated.

Speaking on radio, Mr. Osei said he had learnt his lessons, for which reason he would never stoop low by invoking curses on his party leaders in future. He said that, ideally, he and his group should have used the laid-down rules of the party to drum home their grievances, admitting that the decision to curse was in bad taste.

Sounding like someone that has turned over a new leaf, Mr. Osei admonished NPP members in the country not to emulate their reprehensible action in future.

According to him, it is important for party members to always respect and act according to the laws of the party, so that they would not find themselves in trouble.

He said the party was right to suspend them, stressing that he had decided to use every opportunity he would get to educate his party members to be tolerant and disciplined.

Meanwhile, reports indicated that the Juaben Traditional Council in the Ashanti Region had fined Mr. Osei and the three other NPP members 12 sheep for invoking the curse in contravention of traditional rules.

  • Trump sought Xi’s help to win re-election – John Bolton

US President Donald Trump sought help from Chinese President Xi Jinping to win re-election, ex-National Security Adviser John Bolton’s new book says.

Mr Bolton says Mr Trump wanted China to buy agricultural produce from US farmers, according to details of the forthcoming book previewed by US media.

He also says Mr Trump “remained stunningly uninformed on how to run the White House”.

The Trump administration is trying to block the book from hitting shelves.

Speaking to Fox News Mr Trump said of Mr Bolton: “He broke the law. This is highly classified information and he did not have approval.”

“He was a washed-up guy,” the president added. “I gave him a chance.”

John Bolton joined the White House in April 2018 and left in September the following year, saying he had decided to quit as a national security adviser. President Trump, however, said he had fired Mr Bolton because he disagreed “strongly” with him.

His 577-page tome, The Room Where It Happened, is due to go on sale on 23 June.

But on Wednesday night, the Department of Justice sought an emergency order from a judge to stop the book’s release.

The publisher, Simon & Schuster, said in a statement: “Tonight’s filing by the government is a frivolous, politically motivated exercise in futility.”

It said hundreds of thousands of copies of the book have already been distributed around the world and the injunction would accomplish nothing.

Mr Trump’s Democratic challenger in this November’s election, Joe Biden, said in a statement about the book: “If these accounts are true, it’s not only morally repugnant, it’s a violation of Donald Trump’s sacred duty to the American people.”

What does Bolton allege about the meeting with Xi?

The allegations refer to a meeting between President Trump and President Xi at the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan, in June last year.

“Trump, stunningly, turned the conversation to the coming US presidential election [in 2020], alluding to China’s economic capability and pleading with Xi to ensure he’d win,” Mr Bolton wrote.

“He stressed the importance of farmers and increased Chinese purchases of soybeans and wheat in the electoral outcome.”

Farmers make up a key voting bloc and largely supported Mr Trump in the 2016 election.

Speaking on Wednesday evening, US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer disputed Mr Bolton’s account, saying the request for help with re-election “never happened”.

Mr Bolton also mentions an earlier conversation at the summit’s opening dinner, in which they discussed the building of camps in China’s western Xinjiang region.

Mr Trump said the construction should go ahead as it was “exactly the right thing to do”.

China has detained about a million Uighurs and other ethnic minorities in the camps for punishment and indoctrination.

The Trump administration has been publicly critical of China’s treatment of Uighurs, and on Wednesday the president signed legislation authorising US sanctions against Chinese officials responsible for the repression of Muslims in Xinjiang province.

China denies mistreating Uighurs and attacked the US move, calling it malicious and threatening countermeasures.

On one hand, the account John Bolton offers in his new book should seem somewhat familiar.

This is hardly the first time a former adviser or anonymous current aide to Donald Trump has offered anecdotes about a president seemingly uninterested in the details of governing and uninformed on basic issues of foreign policy. For nearly three-and-a-half years, there have been plentiful stories about a White House rife with backbiting and internal power struggles.

Mr Bolton’s book goes beyond this well-trodden ground, however, in painting a broad portrait of a president willing to bend foreign policy to advance his domestic and personal political agenda. This was the heart of the impeachment case congressional Democrats made against Trump in January.

Mr Bolton confirms their allegations that the president wanted the withholding of military aid to pressure Ukraine to provide damaging information about Democratic rival Joe Biden. Mr Bolton adds that Trump’s dealings with China were also done with an eye on his re-election and that he repeatedly intervened to assist friendly autocrats around the world.

Republicans suggest this is all the work of a disgruntled employee trying to sell books, while Democrats are already growling that Bolton should have volunteered these bombshells during the impeachment proceedings. That ship has sailed, of course, but Bolton’s book can still have a bite, distracting a presidential campaign struggling to find its footing less than five months before election day.

What else did Mr Bolton say?

Mr Bolton says the impeachment inquiry into the president might have had a different outcome this year if it had gone beyond Ukraine and investigated other instances of alleged political interference.

In January, President Trump was impeached for withholding military aid to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky into starting a corruption investigation into Mr Biden and his son Hunter.

The president denied the wrongdoing and was acquitted after a two-week trial in the Republican-controlled Senate in February, which did not include any witnesses.

Mr Bolton – who was criticised by Democrats for declining to testify to the hearings – does not discuss in the book whether he thinks that Mr Trump’s actions on Ukraine were impeachable.

The publication contains a number of other damaging allegations:

‘Oh, are you a nuclear power?’

Among other things, Mr Trump is alleged to have been unaware that the UK was a nuclear power.

Britain’s atomic deterrent came up during a meeting with Theresa May in 2018 when it was mentioned by one of the then-prime minister’s officials.

According to the book, Mr Trump said: “Oh, are you a nuclear power?” Mr Bolton said he could tell it “was not intended as a joke”.

Mr Trump also once asked his former chief-of-staff John Kelly if Finland was part of Russia, writes Mr Bolton.

    Invading Venezuela would be ‘cool’

Mr Trump said invading Venezuela would be “cool”, according to the book, and that the South American nation was “really part of the United States”.

But he was less enthusiastic about another invasion. Of the Afghanistan conflict, Mr Trump is quoted in the book as saying: “This was done by a stupid person named George Bush.”

Mr Bolton writes that in a May 2019 phone call Russian President Vladimir Putin pulled off a “brilliant display of Soviet-style propaganda” by likening Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó to 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, which “largely persuaded Trump”.

Mr Putin’s objective was to defend his ally, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, Mr Bolton writes. In 2018, Mr Trump labelled the leftist Mr Maduro a dictator and imposed sanctions, but he clung to power.

In an interview with ABC News to be broadcast in full this Sunday, Mr Bolton says of Mr Trump: “I think Putin thinks he can play him like a fiddle.”

    ‘This is a bad place’

Mr Bolton writes that many of the president’s closest aides privately disparaged him.

When he arrived at the White House, Mr Bolton said Mr Kelly warned him: “You can’t imagine how desperate I am to get out of here. This is a bad place to work, as you will find out.”

During Mr Trump’s 2018 meeting with North Korea’s leader, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo passed Mr Bolton a note about the president that said: “He is so full of shit.”

He writes that Mr Pompeo, often described as a Trump loyalist, was among aides who considered resigning in disgust in frustration at working for the president.

Mr Bolton writes that the president “saw conspiracies behind rocks, and remained stunningly uninformed on how to run the White House, let alone the huge federal government.”

  • Your pastor should not choose a partner for you – Josh Obeng

Josh Obeng, son of renowned pastor and founder of the Calvary Charismatic Centre, Rev. Ransford Obeng joined Nana Adwoa Sarkodie on her weekly Instagram live sessions for yet another interesting conversation surrounding “Dating in Christianity”.

This comes barely a week after the sexual immorality discussions with Gospel musician Diana Hamilton.

The young pastor reiterated the importance of abstaining from sex until marriage describing his own experience while dating his wife. “I did all the dirty before I got born-again, but after that I made up my mind that when I dated again, it would meet the standards of God and the Bible. So when dating my wife, it was very difficult because she is pretty and I was attracted to her but we waited till we got married” he said.

According to Pastor Josh, dating in Christianity is getting to know someone in a way that leads to marriage, while dating in the world has an end goal of having fun and simply enjoying yourself. He urged single people not to be overwhelmed with the pressure of getting married, as there are so many advantages of being single, including the freedom to make quick decisions and accomplish all your dreams, without the responsibilities accompanied by a wife or children.

    Responding to a question about searching for a partner, Josh Obeng made these relevant points;

    1. “Do not be unequally yoked with an unbeliever. So you can’t date or marry an unbeliever if you’re a true Christian”

    2. “Don’t date someone that would put you before God. Be proud to be number two. If your partner has no respect for the God who created them, how would they respect you?”

    3. “Find someone you can share your life with. Look for someone who has a life you can share in. You need to become someone who has the life that is worth sharing in”

    3. “Don’t date anyone who has no purpose in life. Ask them about their purpose and not just where they see themselves in the next 10 years. Your purpose, ideologies and values must align. If you can’t agree on things like children, careers, finance, you can’t have a successful marriage

    4. “Don’t date someone you don’t respect because there’s going to be some form of submission, and it only gets harder to submit if you don’t respect your spouse”

He insisted that when you’re dating and having sex, you often spend all your energy on having sex without asking the person what they believe in and what their purposes are. So you get married and discover their true character only to become disappointed.

“Don’t be caught in a room alone with your partner because you’re not an angel. Temptations will rise and something can happen. Sexual desires are very strong and powerful. Don’t get yourself caught in compromising situations. Put benchmarks in place and possibly avoid French kissing” he added.

One of the most intriguing revelations the pastor made was in relation to “finding a soul mate”. He explained the mindset that there is only a particular person designed for you to marry is from a Greek mythology and not Biblical.

“The prophetic word is not supposed to make a decision for you. Your pastor or parents should not choose a partner for you. It’s important to receive their counsel, but you still have to make a personal decision.”

“If you follow Biblical principles in dating and marriage, divorce becomes impossible. However, in the unlikely situation of an abuse in marriage, there should be a separation and hopefully when the person changes, there can be a reconciliation” he answered a viewer.

In another question about the ideal time period for getting to know someone, Pastor Josh explained the only important thing was to establish trust and transparency, which could be relative, making a time limit impossible to pin. “I knew my wife for fifteen (15) years before getting married but others can get to know their partners in just six (6) months and still get married successfully. One of the gifts of the spirits everyone needs to have is the spirit of discernment. Sometimes, emotions can cloud your judgement which is why you need Godly counsel and wisdom” he said.

  • Kweku Baako praises NDC, NPP for not engaging in politics of insults

Seasoned journalist, Kweku Baako has eulogized both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for engaging in intellectual political discourse.

According to Kweku Baako, both parties have done well by not trading insults but resorting to sound criticisms to establish their points on which party deserves to be voted into power.

Mr. Baako was commenting on the NDC score of 14 percent regarding the government’s fulfillment of its campaign promises.

The NDC scored the Akufo-Addo-led administration 14% stressing the government has achieved only 86 out of 631 campaign promises it made to the people of Ghana.

Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency in the Volta Region, Hon Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa added that the party has even been charitable and that the actual figure is 13.6%.

“We observed that only 86 promises have been delivered out of the 631 and if you do the arithmetic and divide the 86 by the 631, what you will get is 13.6% and so we have been generous to gift them 14%; we added 0.4% to it by rounding the figure up,” he indicated.

Addressing the issue on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, Mr. Baako said the NDC scoring the government isn’t surprising because it is a political trend to find parties challenging themselves in an electioneering year but what he wouldn’t subscribe to is the use of insults.

“We don’t have the luxury of an alternative. Whether we like it or not, December 7th, this country will go for an election. That is five/six months; so if you hear that political parties and politicians are throwing out some of these things, I think it shouldn’t be surprising. It is to be expected and indeed, on one level, I prefer these things to the subculture of outright insults and character assassination and so forth. So, it’s not bad”.

“This sounds a little bit more intellectual. It’s academic. People like us who do research and historians and so forth would have the threat shifted to this level…In principle, in essence, I think it’s not bad. Indeed, if there is anybody who I think has personified this particular trend, I will say Dr. Bawumia is one. His emergence on the political landscape, he comes with that decisive, focused, intellectual, sometimes academic…He’s like a pioneer in it,” he stated.

  • Coronavirus: University of Mines and Technology uses questionnaires to ‘test’ for virus

Students from the University of Mines and Technology are claiming that the university is using questionnaires to test for Coronavirus.

A photo shared by one student of the university indicated that she had been given a COVID-19 clearance form after filling out the questionnaire.

Some of the questions on the said questionnaire were as follows: “Do you have a headache? Sore throat? General body weakness? Fever? Are you: Coughing? Sneezing? Have you come into contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19?

The questionnaire also asked about the travel history of students.

Based on the answers provided, a COVID-19 clearance form may then be issued.

This comes as some final year students have been allowed to return to campus to complete their final semester.

  • Over one percent of humanity displaced – UN

Nearly 80 million people have been forced to flee their homes due to violence and persecution, marking a near-doubling of global displacement in a decade, the UN said Thursday.

By the end of 2019, one out of every 97 people in the world was living uprooted and displaced, according to a fresh report by the United Nations refugee agency, highlighting swelling displacement from conflicts in places like Syria and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“One percent of the world population cannot go back to their homes because there are wars, persecution, human rights violations, and other forms of violence,” UN refugee chief Filippo Grandi told AFP in an interview.

The UNHCR agency found that by the end of last year, a record 79.5 million people were living either as refugees, asylum seekers or in so-called internal displacement within their own countries, marking a dramatic increase of nearly nine million from a year earlier.

“This is a trend that has been going on since 2012: the figures are higher than the year before,” Grandi said, pointing out that this meant “there has been more conflict, there has been more violence that has pushed people away from their homes.”

It also means, he said, “that there have been insufficient political solutions” to the conflicts and crises that would allow people to return home.

Grandi pointed out that 10 years ago, the number of people living in displacement around the global stood at around 40 million.

“So it has basically doubled. And we don’t see this trend diminishing,” he said.

    Fears for 2021

“With the international community so divided, so unable, so incapable of making peace, unfortunately, the situation won’t stop growing, and I am very worried that next year it will be even worse than this year.”

Thursday’s report showed that at the end of 2019, nearly 46 million of those displaced remained inside their own country, while 26 million had fled across borders as refugees.

Another 4.2 million people were asylum seekers, while 3.6 million Venezuelans displaced abroad were tallied separately.

Last year, some 11 million people were newly displaced, many in a handful of conflict-wracked countries and regions, the report showed.

They include Syria, which after more than nine years of civil war counts 13.2 million people displaced either inside or outside the country – a full sixth of the global total.

In fact, Grandi pointed out, a full 68 percent of the world’s refugees come from just five countries: Syria, Venezuela, Afghanistan, South Sudan and Myanmar.

This, he stressed, “means that if the international community found the unity, the political will and the resources to help these countries get out of crisis and rebuild, most likely we would have solved well over half of the world (refugee) problem.”

    Coronavirus impact?

The report did not address the evolving displacement situation since the global coronavirus pandemic struck.

Grandi said it was clear the crisis was complicating the situation for the displaced at a time when everyone is being told that “being on the move is a liability for yourself and for others.”

But he pointed out that the poor and middle-income countries that host around 85 percent of the world’s refugees had so far been relatively spared the worst health impacts of the pandemic.

However, he warned, the economic impacts were taking a dire toll.

“What we have really seen escalating dramatically is poverty,” he said, pointing out that lockdowns in many countries had eliminated any chance most displaced people have of making an income.

Without significant support for displaced people and their host communities, this could spark “further population movements”, he warned.

Grandi also reiterated that countries must continue granting asylum to those in need, despite border closures and lockdown measures.

“One activity that doesn’t seem to have been discouraged by the pandemic is war, or conflict or violence,” he said.

“Unfortunately people continue to flee their homes because pandemic or not, they are at risk… and they need to continue to be given refuge, protection, asylum.”

  • Ghana Card: Dont turn yourself into vouching contractors Ghanaians told

The National Identification Authority has warned Ghanaians to desist from taking fees for vouching in its Ghana card registration exercise.

Speaking at a media briefing to update Ghanaians on its ongoing mass Ghana card distribution exercise and to give details on its upcoming mop-up registration exercise, the Executive Secretary of the Authority Professor Kenneth Attafuah said whiles there is no limit to the number of times a person can vouch for applicants, the process of vouching must be done with integrity and honesty as well as with diligence that can prove the nationality of the applicant to be Ghanaian.

“The personal identification number of the person vouching is tied to that of the person who has been vouched for. Both parties will be prosecuted if it is discovered that the vouching process is done fraudulently.

Please be advised that nobody should take up the responsibility of vouching as a contract for fee payment. You are to vouch for persons you know to be Ghanaians and are eligible to register. Vouching falsely is criminal and there are consequences,” he warned.

Professor Attafuah went ahead to disclose that the authority has withheld the Ghana Cards of some applicants as their Personal Identification Numbers indicate that they had previously registered in the National Identity Register as foreigners and have now attempted to register for the Ghana Card as Ghanaians, without showing evidence of acquiring citizenship.

He said persons in this category will be required by the NIA to provide evidence to establish that they have subsequently acquired Ghanaian citizenship before their cards will be issued to them.

    Background

Under the regulations of the NIA, an applicant of the Ghana Card must be a Ghanaian citizen and must be able to prove same by presenting a valid Ghanaian Travelling Passport, a birth certificate or a valid certificate of acquired citizenship as well as a Ghana Post Digital Address Code (residential) in order to qualify to register.

In case an applicant does not have any of the above mentioned mandatory documents, a relative issued with a Ghana Card can vouch for the person under oath, or two members of the persons community of residents who have been issued with a Ghana Card and falls within a given category of status can vouch for the applicant.

The NIA on April 29, 2019 commenced a nationwide exercise to issue identity cards to all Ghanaians across the country beginning with the Greater Accra Region. Since then the authority has conducted the mass registration exercise in all 16 regions in the country except in the Eastern Region where the exercise was truncated on March 21, 2020, due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Authority has however announced it is resuming the exercise in the Eastern Region on Thursday, June 18, 2020, to Saturday, June 27, 2020, with registration centers expected to be open from 7:00 am each day to 5:00 pm, with the exception of statutory public holidays.

The NIA is also commencing a mop-up registration exercise in all 16 regions beginning with the Upper East and Upper West from Thursday, June 18, 2020, to Friday, July 3, 2020.

  • MP urges Government to pay for upkeep of ‘stranded Ghanaians’ in quarantine

The MP for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, wants government to pay for the upkeep of stranded Ghanaians when they return home to undergo quarantine.

The legislator believes the government has requested for enough funds to be able to cater for their needs during the two-week mandatory quarantine.

According to him, it would be disingenuous for government to ask persons who were stranded to pay for their own upkeep during quarantine.

Government came to Parliament on three different occasions to ask for money. They got GHS16.7 billion,” Mr. Dafeamekpor told Citi FM.

“They turned some of these things to international bond and all and they got every single dime under the program. And one of the key things they told Parliament was that they are spending money to evacuate Ghanaians from other regions and when they do so, they will have to feed them for a number of days to conform to the protocols.”

Many Ghanaians abroad have expressed their unhappiness about the amount being charged by government to quarantine them when they are evacuated back to Ghana.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry plans to airlift “willing” Ghanaians, quarantine them for a period of 14 days, before reintegrating them back into society if they test negative for COVID-19.

But these stranded Ghanaians are not only expected to pay for their air tickets, the government also requests that the foot the bill for the 14-day quarantine period.

In a statement, the Ghana Embassies said they will be quarantined in two-star and four-star hotels which cost GHc500 per night and GHc600 per night, respectively.

This means each stranded Ghanaian that is evacuated will pay at least GHc7,000 or GHc8,400 to cover the cost of their quarantine, depending on which hotels they are lodged in.

This, many of the stranded Ghanaians, believe is too expensive and want the government to intervene.

  • George Floyd protests: Brother makes impassioned plea to UN

The brother of George Floyd, whose death last month triggered mass anti-racism protests, has asked the UN to investigate the killing of black people at the hands of US police.

Philonise Floyd told the UN Human Rights Council the whole world saw how his brother was tortured and killed.

He said this proved that black lives did not matter in the US.

UN Human Rights chief Michelle Bachelet criticised the “gratuitous brutality” of Mr Floyd’s death.

She said the protests were the “culmination of many generations of pain”.

Ms Bachelet, a former president of Chile, also urged countries to confront the legacy of slavery and colonialism, and to make reparations.

Mr Floyd died after a white police officer in Minneapolis knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes. The killing spurred global protests led by the Black Lives Matter movement.

In a separate development on Wednesday, US Senate Republicans unveiled a proposal for police reform, which would discourage tactics like the chokehold that killed Mr Floyd but it stopped short of an outright ban.

It follows a more radical measure proposed by House Democrats earlier in the month, which would include a ban.

    ‘Tortured and murdered’

George Floyd’s brother called on UN officials to set up an independent commission to investigate the deaths of African Americans in US police custody, as well as violence against peaceful protesters.

He was speaking by video link at a debate convened by African countries at the human rights council’s headquarters in Geneva.

“The way you saw my brother tortured and murdered on camera is the way black people are treated by police in America,” he said.

“You in the United Nations are your brothers’ and sisters’ keepers in America, and you have the power to help us get justice for my brother George Floyd.

“I am asking you to help him. I am asking you to help me. I am asking you to help us black people in America.”

He also denounced police treatment of people involved in the protests which swept the US in the weeks after his brother’s death.

“When people dared to raise their voice and protest for my brother they were tear-gassed, run over with police vehicles,” he said.

The BBC’s Imogen Foulkes in Geneva says it is unclear whether the demand for an official investigation will get enough support to be approved.

The Trump administration pulled the US out of the council two years ago and does not attend its meetings, but our correspondent says some countries are understood to be reluctant to back an inquiry which so clearly singles out the US.

  • Ibrah One sends death threat to Kennedy Agyapong

Ghanaian politician and member of parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, in his recent war against fake prophets in Ghana, has turned his attention to a young millionaire in Ghana called Ibrah one who sparked trouble for his own self in defence of a ‘fake’ pastor, Obinim.

Ibrahim Dauda is his actual name. It is still s mystery as to how he became a millionaire. All we know is that his game began overnight. Since then, he has flaunted several cars and buildings which he owns as a show of his wealth.

Kennedy Agyapong, however, has named his as an internet fraudster, a money launderer and a ‘sakawa’ boy. This, he claims is how Ibrah one became the millionaire he’s seen to be. His nationality is even in doubt. It is said that he’s from Niger.

It seems the expose of Kennedy Agyapong has hit him very hard such that he has replied. He has sent out a death threat to Kennedy Agyapong. He has given him a deadline to apologize for all that he has said against him. If not, death awaits him and his people.

  • Ofosu-Ampofo-led NDC in tatters – Kwamena Duncan

Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) led by its National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, is in tatters.

According to him, the NDC leadership is a bunch of confused people.

Hon. Kwamena Duncan was commenting on recent comments by the NDC flagbearer and former President, John Dramani Mahama that the party will reject results of a flawed elections by the Electoral Commission (EC).

Mr. John Mahama, speaking to the party members and supporters at their 28th anniversary, served notice to the EC ahead of the December polls saying “as leader of the NDC, I wish to serve notice that we shall do all our parts to ensure that our country remains peaceful and that the electoral process proceeds smoothly, but let nobody assume that we will accept the results of a flawed elections.”

The former President, according to Kwamena Duncan, also says the NDC will “police the ballot box boot for boot”.

Meanwhile, the NDC National Chairman has also ordered their members and supporters not to participate in the upcoming mass registration exercise for reason being that the atmosphere in the country is not conducive for the exercise.

“We say no to the new register and even if Parliament passes the legislation we will not accept it. We are not just against it because they will not accept the old voter card but because the whole atmosphere in the country is not conducive,” he said.

Contributing to Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ on Wednesday, Mr. Duncan asserted that the “Ofosu Ampofo-led NDC today is in tatters” and wondered how the party expects their members to vote in the general elections.

“Leadership that only exudes confusion . . . You have your Presidential candidate talk about policiing the ballot box boot for boot at every level, then the party Chairman says he will not allow his people to go and register. So, who will then go and cast the ballot?” he quizzed.

To him, the NDC leadership is conditioning their members to reject the election results when former President John Mahama loses.

“The implication from such statements is somehow preparing the minds of his supporters that if it doesn’t go my way, that I see the outcome as a flawed one and that, all of you, as I have already said, as I have made the pronouncements five months ago; we’re not going to accept this. It’s preparation of their minds,” he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi.

“You’re policing the ballot boot for boot and when you finish, and the results come out; how are you going to call it? That if it favors you that it will not be considered flawed and if it doesn’t favor you, that’s when you’ll call it flawed?” he further questioned.

“I’m a MUSLIM, and a devout one as such. I know this is going to irk some people but I don’t care . If she was thrown out of a public school, a public office or hospital, I’d be here to defend it.

But you don’t carry your religion and its beliefs into someone’s private business and come to social media to court unnecessary sympathy. Why does anyone think that a private programme or event that has set their own standard criteria and requirements should admit them together with their religious beliefs?

She can go and partake in a Muslim beauty contest that allows pageants to wear Abaaya and Hijab. It is NOT by force. Beauty is not only about looks but intelligence. Intelligence is knowing what is the criteria for doing what you want to do, where to do and when to do it.

  • Jubilation time for NDC party members as Mahama decides to choose a running mate in September.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been at war selecting it’s running mate for their flagbearer Ex-President Mahama. This has lead to the NPP calling the NDC alot of names also saying they are not serious.

This seems to be a problem for the NDC as most of their own party executives are all even afraid of joining their flagbearer but an information reaching us is that three people have been chosen and these people are two males and one female.

The Ex-President is expected to choose any of these three people to assist him in government he has decided to make the decision public and known to all in September this year.

NDC could make a record by selecting the female because in the history of Ghana no female has ever been voted in as President or as a vice president of Ghana. Most people have started to criticize the party by saying if they go in for a female as a running mate they have no chance against the ruling party.

Here in Africa females has a lower percentage in being a president or a vice as we know the likes of Madam Konadu Agyeman Rawlings and the Daughter of Kwame Nkrumah as well as others have all failed to take the seat from the men.

  • GMA bemoans non-adherence to coronavirus measures by public

The Greater Accra Division of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has bemoaned the non-adherence to COVID-19 safety and preventive measures by the public.

It said this was disturbing as Ghana’s case count kept increasing despite efforts aimed at curtailing the pandemic.

Ghana has recorded a total of 12,590 confirmed cases, 4,410 recoveries, and a death toll of 66. The Greater Accra region remains the most affected with 7, 419 cases recorded.

This was in a press release issued by the GMA and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Wednesday in Accra.

It said: “As we ease restrictions and learn to live with the virus, many people have regrettably relaxed their attitudes especially with regards to measures aimed at reducing the spread of the disease.

The release said a drive around many parts of the region reveals non-adherence to social distancing protocols, non-observance of hand hygiene measures, and not wearing facemasks.

These negative tendencies it said were particularly worse in areas where a lot of commercial activities take place such as the markets.

It said the much-publicized enforcement of these measures by the security agencies and local authorities that characterised the beginning of the pandemic had also been relaxed.

The GMA said cognisant of the negative effects of a worsening pandemic on the economy, the limited resources, underdeveloped healthcare system, inadequate healthcare personnel, and critical care facilities, made suggestions to curtail the situation.

It called on District, Municipal, and Metropolitan Assemblies to lead the fight in enforcing strict adherence to prescribed preventive measures by the public.

“The security agencies must be enlisted to support these measures, traditional and religious leaders such as chiefs, queen mothers, Wulomei, pastors and Imams must be engaged to support an intensified public education drive,” it stated.

It said with the partial easing of restrictions to allow for some religious activities such an approach must be explored with greater vigour.

It urged that COVID-19 education in all languages using the electronic, social, and print media must be intensified and The National Commission of Civic Education (NCCE) must take the lead by roping in celebrities and influential people as icons to help drive home these preventive measures.

“Voluntary public disclosure of status must be encouraged to minimise stigma. We thus salute all affected individuals who have publicly declared their status,” it added.

It reminded the public that the COVID-19 is real and must all be responsible in their dealings to protect themselves and loved ones.

  • Dont cheapen yourselves as a tool for political violence Sheikh Aremeyaw to Muslim youth

The spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu has urged Muslim youth to shun any politician who would attempt to use them to achieve their end or to cause mayhem during this year’s December elections.

He advised Muslim youth to resist the temptation of being used by politicians to foment trouble, adding that “Muslim youth need better education and not violence.”

He said the prevailing peace, political stability and sound economic management in Ghana had been recognised internationally and that the country had won an enviable position as the beacon of democracy in West Africa, which should be jealously protected.

He pointed out that Islam stood for peace, and therefore all Muslims, irrespective of their educational or ethnic background, should preach peace and pray against violence in the country.

According to him, Zongo communities in the country were experiencing change through government’s social intervention programmes aimed at creating employment for the people, and appealed to them to do their best to consolidate such gains.

He indicated that responses and statements from various political divides in the ongoing debate over the compilation of a new electoral register portend danger for our country.

“We must reject any mindset that seeks to accept violence as a means for political expression. We must speak against this with the strongest of voice”, he urged opinion leaders.

He added that “our young people should not be reduced by politicians to become tools to visit political violence. It is immoral and must be condemned”. Sheikh Aremeyaw was speaking at a press soiree organised by The Light Foundation in Accra.

The Light Foundation was established in 2005 to help poor people access basic services including education, water, sanitation and healthcare.

Guided by the core values of peace, excellence, compassion and social justice, the Light Foundation’s press encounter with the media was to spell out activities in helping to ensure a peaceful election in December 2020.

Fake news hampering the fight against COVID-19

Sheikh Aremeyaw highlighted fake news as one of the challenges the country is facing in the fight against COVID-19.

According to him, there are times when people have experienced falsification of information that casts doubts on the information they are being given. These doubts, he stated, discourage people from taking the precautionary measures, making it a very serious trend for Ghana as a nation.

He, therefore, encouraged politicians to refrain from the unnecessary politicisation of official information in the fight against the pandemic.

“It is worrying to see people on the media front from the political divide exchanging words about what is to be done rather than sounding complimentary to the efforts being made and taking entrenched positions. We need to work hard to ensure we all contribute our quota to ensure our safety,” he lamented.

“We made a pledge to the Ghanaian people to expand and improve the road network while closing the missing links in the network. The President in his 11th update to the nation however confirmed the report and wished him speedy recovery.

The Health Minister according to critics should have known better than to play hide and seek with his status.

Dr Dacosta Aboagye in an interview on Neat FM said it is insensitive to criticse the Minsiter and that Ghanaians should rather pray for him to get better.

  • A Ghanaian man cannot be raped Legal practitioner

Legal practitioner, Mr Lamtiig Apanga has clarified that in accordance with the laws in the country concerning rape, a man cannot be raped by a woman or a fellow man, as the law focuses on penile penetration.

According to Mr Lamtiig, the law by definition says that only a female can be raped, so a man cannot go to the police to file a rape case.

“The law as it states, section 97 of Acts 29, the act of the criminal offence defines rape to mean the natural carnal knowledge of a woman or a female who is sixteen years and above without her consent. So it specifically says a female. So by definition, the law says that it is only a female who can be raped. And so a man cannot be raped per our law. That is what the law says, so a man cannot run to the police station and say that I have been raped. He cannot run to the police station and make claims against a fellow man even if a fellow man rapes him,” he said in an interview with GhanaWeb on June 17, 2020.

He stressed that the law clearly highlights that rape involves natural carnal knowledge, and penile penetration is the only recognized carnal knowledge in the country.

“Once it says natural, it has to be natural, and natural here means that penile penetration of the vagina by the penis. The way the law has been made, it is not possible for a man to say a woman has raped him,” he stated.

Mr Lamtiig, however, added that on the other hand both males and females can take legal action towards cases of defilement, and perpetrators could get a jail term of not less than six months.

“Section 103 on Indecent assault clearly states that whoever indecently assaults any person shall be guilty of a misdemeanour and shall be liable on conviction to a term of imprisonment of not less than six months. A person commits the offence of indecent assault if without the consent of the other person he forcibly makes any sexual bodily contact with that other person or sexually violates the body of that other person in any manner not amounting to carnal knowledge or unnatural carnal knowledge,” he concluded.

  • Registration exercise too risky; be advised & cancel it – Kwesi Pratt to EC

Kwesi Pratt has advised the Electoral Commission (EC) to draw lessons from the unfortunate situation of the Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, and curtail plans to compile a new register.

The Health Minister of Health is on admission at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), receiving treatment for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo disclosed the health status of the Minister and wished him speedy recovery, during his 11th update on COVID-19.

“Let us also wish our hardworking Minister of Health, Mr Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, MP for Dormaa Central, a speedy recovery from the virus, which he contracted in the line of duty and is in stable condition,” the President said.

Contributing to Peace FM’s political programme ‘Kokrokoo’, Kwesi Pratt noted that despite all preventive measures adopted by the Health Minister, he couldn’t become immune from the virus and to him, the EC shouldn’t think their measures are foolproof to secure the lives of the participants in the new voters’ registration exercise.

According to him, the Commission will be exposing the electorates to the pandemic disease and endangering the lives of many Ghanaians.

He therefore has asked the EC to stop the mass registration exercise scheduled to begin on Tuesday, June 30 this year.

“The Health Minister, himself, is in the hospital. Meanwhile, there’s nobody in Ghana who can tell that the Minister in charge of health didn’t comply with the President’s directives. He followed them; he wore face mask. He has done the social distancing and so forth but he’s infected…Unless you want to tell me the Minister didn’t adhere to the preventive instructions that were given by the President. He complied with it but he is in hospital and now the President says we should pray him. And we’re praying for him to fully recover. So, it’s too risky,”he emphasized.

  • Shama finally elects Presiding Member after eight attempts

After eight attempts by the Shama District Assembly to elect a Presiding Member, Assembly Member for Bentsir Electoral Area, Emmanuel Mark Ackon has been given the nod for the office.

He secured 25 out of the 26 votes to emerge victorious.

The Shama District Assembly has been without a Presiding Member for the past seven months.

In the fiercely contested elections, Mr Ackon in the first round had 13 votes while the other aspirant, Assembly Member for Aboadze Emmanuel Amevor, had 12 Votes.

It took the timely intervention of some traditional authorities to convince Mr Amevor to step down for Emmanuel Ackon to sail through with 25 votes with one spoilt ballot after the second round of elections.

The first attempt by the Shama District Assembly to elect the Presiding Member was in November, 2019.

Subsequent attempts to compose the Assembly for another election could not happen due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

With the easing of restrictions, the Assembly tried unsuccessfully to elect the PM as all the Presiding Member aspirants failed to get the needed majority. The eighth attempt on Wednesday has, however, been successful.

Elected Presiding Member Emmanuel Mark Ackon stressed that members posed their trust in him by endorsing his candidature as a result of his good relation with them and also by the fact that they believed in his good vision for the assembly.

District Chief Executive for Shama Joseph Amoah acknowledged the intervention by the traditional authorities towards the successful election of the Presiding Member and assured that he would work towards bringing all perceived factions together.

Acting Paramount Queen-mother of Shama Traditional Council Nana Akosua Gyamfiaba II believes the needed development will be achieved with the election of a Presiding Member.

  • Offinso traditional council performs rituals to pacify river god

The Offinso Traditional Council has performed a ritual to pacify the Offin River god on behalf of some NPP youth group who called its name to invoke curses on their leaders.

The chiefs, led by Nana Kwaku Wiafe, chief linguist of the traditional area, gathered on the banks of the river and slaughtered a male sheep and fowls to the river god to prevent a possible calamity in the area as a result of the action of the youth.

It would be recalled that some aggrieved NPP youth in the Offinso South constituency went to the Offin River with fowls and schnapps to invoke curses on some of their leaders whom they accused of trying to manipulate the process to disqualify their preferred candidates in the up-coming constituency primaries.

The Offinso traditional council after hearing the act, traditionally arrested the perpetrators and summoned them before the palace of the paramount chief to answer some charges.

Among the charges were going to the river god without passing through the right process and not seeking permission, calling other river gods whilst they were inside river Offin, wrong choice of words and insult to the river as well as insulting the people of Offinso as prostitutes.

The youth accepted the charges and ran to Nana Boakye Yam Ababio, the Nkwantakesehene to intercede on their behalf.

They were fined and ordered to bring 24 sheep, one box of schnapps, six crates of eggs and six fowls.

They were however, ordered by the chiefs to bring at least two sheep, three fowls, three crates of eggs and a box of schnapps following the intervention of Nana Boakye Yam.

The chiefs after receiving the items went to the river to perform the rituals as demanded by custom and traditions of the area.

Nana KwaKu Wiafe, the Chief Linguist, after the process, explained to the Ghana News Agency that the rituals were performed to reverse the curses and also pacify the river god to prevent a possible outbreak of a calamity in the area.

He said the traditional council was happy that everything went on successfully indicating that, the gods had accepted the pacification.

Nana Wiafe appealed to the youth never to joke with gods, since their power and wrath could be deadly.

He pointed out that the chiefs were now going to sit down to determine the type of punishment to be given to the offenders.

Mr Akwasi Adu Gyamfi, who led the group to invoke the curses, expressed remorse for their action, saying they did that out of anger and thanked the chiefs for the intervention.

  • Ghanaian Times: Menzgold customers outrage justified

In August last year, Nana Appiah Mensah, popularly known as NAM1, the Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of controversial gold dealership firm, Menzgold, addressed a press conference in Accra and appealed to the government to help his outfit to pay customers who have been living in fear of losing their investments.

He was addressing the media soon after returning to Ghana after his release from custody in Dubai and after securing bail from an Accra court where he was arraigned and charged with over 61 offences against the state.

The offences, including money laundering, fraud, taking illegal deposits and trading in unlicensed minerals, were brought against NAM 1. The amount involved is GH¢1.68 billion ($308.4m) collected from 16,001 investors.

From 2014 to 2018, Menzgold was said to have offered the investors interest rates of seven to 10 per cent per month on gold deposits.

On paper, the offer was very attractive and more generous than what traditional banks offered at the time.

But as is public knowledge, the business went bust and since last year the customers have made many efforts to retrieve their investments without success.

To back their demand, hundreds of the Menzgold customers on many occasions in the past protested in different parts of the country demanding retrieval of their monies.

Some even went as far as to demand payment from the government citing regulatory failures by the Bank of Ghana (BOG) and allied bodies like the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Unfortunately, all the efforts have not yielded results and as some of them would want us to believe, many of the investors have died and others continue to agonise over the loss of their investments.

To make matters worse, however, NAM 1 continues to flaunt his wealth around by organising flamboyant events, many of which the customers justifiably consider offensive.

The question on the lips of many of these customers is that, if he still has what it takes to organise such lavish ceremonies, why then is he not paying their monies back to them.

Of course, that does not appear to be his priority and that has angered the investors who have called for his immediate arrest.

Under an umbrella group, the Coalition of Aggrieved Customers of Menzgold (CACM) Ghana, the investors said “we are very much appalled by the bravado and open disregard for the laws of the land seeing NAM1, a man who has been slapped with 61 criminal charges including money laundering still signing financial contracts and being escorted by macho men.

In fact, the actions of NAM1 do not show any empathy towards the sufferings of his customers who he has failed to pay in the past several months and he goes ahead to rub salt into their wounds by organising a lavish public event that has gone viral on social media.

The Ghanaian Times sympathises with all the customers who are yet to retrieve their investments and urge state institutions which are handling the case in court to deal with it quickly, so that, the investors can get their monies back.

  • Re-Live: Ghana’s first ever FIFA World Cup win against Czech Republic

Ghana pulled off the biggest upset in the 2006 FIFA World Cup by recording its first victory over the second-ranked team on the FIFA/Coca -Cola World Ranking, Czech Republic 2-0 at the RheinEnergiestadion in Cologne, Germany.

Asamoah Gyan fired Ghana ahead after just 70 seconds, finishing superbly to punish Tomas Ujfalusi’s mistake.

Ujfalusi was later sent off for bringing down Matthew Amoah, but the Czechs had a reprieve as Gyan struck the resulting penalty against the post.

Petr Cech kept Ghana at bay with a string of great saves but the Black Stars sealed the victory with a second when Sulley Muntari rounded off a fine move.

Ghana gave an instant demonstration of their determination to make amends for their error-strewn defeat to Italy by sweeping into the lead inside 70 seconds.

A Ghana corner was cleared only as far as Stephen Appiah whose cross was missed by Ujfalusi and fell for Gyan who finished superbly past Cech from the edge of the box.

The Czech Republic was having problems getting the influential Tomas Rosicky on the ball.

Ghana’s central midfielders Appiah and Michael Essien worked their socks off to negate the threat of Nedved and Rosicky.

The Czechs at last stitched a move together, with Jaroslav Plasil, Rosicky and Nedved combining to set up Poborsky for a cross which Rosicky fired wide.

Czech Republic’s hunger for an equaliser almost proved their undoing as Asamoah Gyan caught them short-handed at the back and it needed a great save Cech to prevent Ghana from doubling their lead.

Aduana Stars FC forward, Yahaya Mohammed has said his side should be crowned league champions if the 2019/20 Ghana Premier League (GPL) is truncated due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ghana’s President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his 10th address on measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus extended the ban on sporting activities till July 31 which has seen many club administrators urging the GFA to cancel the season due to time factor as there are plans to synchronize the local football calendar with that of the Europeans.

“We call him ‘Lewangoalski’ for that reason,” the left-back said. “He’s a top striker, the top in the world. Coming in and scoring 31 goals, it’s unbelievable.”

Davies was sent off with 11 minutes remaining, while Werder Bremen’s late appeal for a penalty was turned down.

“Unfortunately, anger comes into play,” he explained. “I got a yellow card, apologies for that. The second yellow card, I don’t know what happened, I tried to run backward, he came into me.

“It’s the referee’s decision, so I apologise to everyone. That’s not the FC Bayern way, but I’m happy we can win the championship.”
