  • Messi is an inspiration – Braithwaite opens up on life at Barcelona

Barcelona forward Martin Braithwaite has described Lionel Messi as an “inspiration” as he reflected on his first few months at Camp Nou.

The 29-year-old was a surprise signing in February after injuries to Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele left Barcelona short on attackers. While yet to score for the club across three appearances, Braithwaite did contribute two assists on his debut as he gets used to playing with the Catalans.

Messi is one player the Dane hasn’t struggled to gel with as he noted the Argentina legend has already begun improving his game.

“It changes a lot, of course,” Braithwaite told Goal when asked about his opinion on Messi now he plays alongside him.

“He gives so much confidence to the team because he can make the difference and also helped me personally to be a better player with his advice and how he sees football. He is really an inspiration.”

Signed in the wake of an injury to Suarez, Braithwaite may now struggle for minutes when the Liga season resumes this week with the Uruguayan star now fully fit again, but rather than despair at his likely limited role at Camp Nou, the Denmark international is eager to learn from Suarez.

“Honestly I don’t think in that kind of way. I am so happy that Luis is back because when I came here he was injured and I haven’t played with him,” he said. “I want to learn from him, he is one of the best strikers in the world and I am happy he is back.”

After previously playing for the likes of Leganes, Middlesbrough and Toulouse, Braithwaite has found things quite different on the training ground at Camp Nou.

“The training is totally different to what I was used to so I can feel I am developing a lot in the technical level,” Braithwaite said. “As a human I can feel I have more attention in such a big club like this but you must learn to live with all this attention.”

One year ago, the prospect of Braithwaite being a Barcelona player would have been laughed off by many, but the fact it has happened convinces the man himself that no dream should be deemed too hard to reach as he hopes his time at the club will show his grandchildren anything is possible.

He said: “I just want to tell them everything is possible in life. If you put your mind in it you can achieve your dreams.”

  • Audit report uncover cases of payment for no work done

The Performance Audit Report on Capital Projects funded through District Development Facilities in 30 Districts Assemblies compiled by the Auditor-General has uncovered cases of payment for no work done.

Findings of the Audit Report on payment and work done showed that monies were disbursed for non-executed works resulting in overpayments.

“For example, the pavement for work at the taxi station of Ho barracks was paid in full when only 50 per cent of the work was done. In some instance, items that were specified for installation were omitted yet payments were made like the U drain around the Bibiani District Police Headquarters, which was not done yet paid in full,” it noted.

The report said in Prestea Huni Valley, the specified depth of the borehole at Gordon Community was 35 to 45 metres for a Mechanised pump however investigations revealed that the depth was not up to that.

“Upon completion of the drilling, an AFRIDEV hand pump recommended for a depth of 16.6 to 30 metres was installed and therefore was not deep enough to pump out water from below 35meter when it was completed and handed over,” it said.

The report said the contractor was paid in full for a mechanised borehole when he provided a manual hand pump borehole and the community had no water. “We observed that Assemblies make payment for no work done due to insufficient due diligence and familiarisation. In the individual reports, we have recommended for disallowance and Surcharge of the individuals concerned,” it stressed.

The report stated that the occurrences were due to a combination of lack of due diligence on the part of the District Management Team, District Works Engineer (DMEs) and familiarization between DWEs and Contractors.

It said, “Contractors and works engineers get to familiarize with each other to the extent that a suggestion by a contractor for DWE to increase the work done beyond the actual work to cater for delayed payments are accepted and paid for.”

The report said payment for work done except for mobilization was based on measured work at the time of preparing Interim Payment Certificate (IPC).

It noted that the DWEs, upon request by contractors measure the amount of work done, cost it, and prepare certificates to cover the amount.

Per the rule, it said the DMT validates the work against the IPC quantities before approval was given for payment.

  • Auditor-General identifies political interference in local project awards

The Performance of Audit Report on Capital Projects funded through District Development Facilities in 30 Districts Assemblies compiled by the Auditor-General has identified political interference in project awards.

The report on the website of the Audit Service found out that in some cases, projects were not initiated in accordance with the National Development Planning Commission Guidelines, but were based on political decisions at the local level rather than followed procedure.

“The District Chief Executives and Members of Parliament under the guise of directives influence the type of projects, selection of contractors and siting of projects,” it said.

“We found markets; KVIPs and some schools sited in areas far from the communities and not being used thereby defeating the purpose for which they were built”.

The report, which was submitted to parliament, said the projects were termed priority projects and imposed on the communities thereby externally interfering to undermine the process.

“There was the inclusion of tenders who did not purchase tender documents as it was in Bibiani and evaluation of Tenders who did not meet preliminary qualification criteria set by the Assemblies to have won and awarded contracts as in the case of Awutu Senya District in the award of contract for a pavilion and the maternity ward,” it noted.

It said the guidelines stipulated that districts undertook development projects by involving the various communities to ensure that projects undertaken were based on need rather than partisan political considerations.

The report said, “Session 2(1a) of the National Development Planning (System) Act 1994 (Act 480), a District Planning Authority established under the Local Government Act, 1993 (Act 462), initiate and prepare district development plans and settlement structure plans in the manner prescribed by the Commission and ensure that the plans are prepared with the full participation of the local community”.

  • I built the greatest economy in the world – Trump

“I built the greatest economy in the world, the best the U.S has ever had. I am doing it again!”

The world of politics is characterized by the ability to lobby. To be able to engage in any political activity, one must possess the capacity of constructing logically valid arguments, in order to convince people for their votes. Sometimes, in the process of soliciting for votes, you have to make the people aware of some of the things you have achieved, giving the people the assurance that you will achieve similar results provided they give their votes to you.

In a recent Tweet by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, he claimed that he had built the greatest economy in the world, the best the U.S has ever had. He added that he is doing it again.

It is pretty obvious such words are meant for the people to notice the amazing works of Trump in order to give their votes to him in the nations Presidential elections in November this year. Let us look at some of the achievements of Trump, to see if his claims are genuine.

On January 23, 2017 President Trump reinstated and expanded the Mexico City Policy, which blocks funding for international organizations that perform or promote abortion. This new program is known as Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance (PLGHA), which now covers $8.8 billion in family planning and global health funds that go to organizations abroad (none of whom may perform or promote abortion).

On January 16, 2018 the Department of Justice filed an amicus brief with the District Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia on behalf of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. The Archdiocese had wanted to promote a religious message during the Christmas holiday but, had been denied advertising space within the District’s public transit system.

On April 12, 2019 the Trump administration’s policy on military service by those with gender dysphoria went into effect. This policy will help halt the deterioration of military readiness, lethality, and unit cohesion caused by social experimentation in the military.

On May 18, 2020 USAID Acting Administrator John Barsa sent a letter to the UN Secretary General advocating that the UN not push abortion during the coronavirus crisis. Barsa noted that abortion is not an “essential service,” and there are many actual health needs at this time. Therefore, the United States, which stands with the international pro-life community under the Trump administration, does not look kindly on these efforts to promote abortion.

These are few of the numerous achievements of Donald Trump which can win him another tenure of office. But will Trump stand a chance in the impending elections especially when the nation recorded higher numbers of racial injustices in his term of office?

  • New Zealand to lift all restrictions as it declares itself virus-free

New Zealand is set to lift almost all its Coronavirus restrictions within hours as it reports there are no active cases in the country.

It will move to level one, the lowest of its four-tier alert system, at midnight local time (12:00 GMT).

Under this, social distancing will no longer be required and there will be no limits on public gatherings, but borders will remain closed.

New Zealand has reported no new COVID-19 cases for more than two weeks.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told reporters she did “a little dance” when she was told the country no longer had any active virus cases.

“While we’re in a safer, stronger position there’s still no easy path back to pre-Covid life, but the determination and focus we have had on our health response will now be vested in our economic rebuild,” she said.

“While the job is not done, there is no denying this is a milestone. So can I finish with a very simple Thank you, New Zealand.”

    ‘A sustained effort’

New Zealand first went into lockdown on 25 March, setting up a new four-stage alert system and going in at level four, where most businesses were shut, schools closed and people told to stay at home.

After more than five weeks, it moved to alert level three in April, allowing takeaway food shops and some non-essential businesses to re-open.

As the number of community cases continued to decline, the country moved into level 2 in mid-May.

The move to level one comes ahead of plan – the government had originally meant to make the move on 22 June, but it was brought forward after no new cases were reported for 17 days, say local media outlets.

Under the new rules which will come into place in just a matter of hours, all schools and workplaces will be open. Weddings, funerals and public transport will be able to resume without any restrictions.

Social distancing will no longer be required but will still be encouraged.

However, all New Zealanders arriving from abroad will still have to go through a 14-day period of isolation or quarantine.

Ms Ardern warned that the country would “certainly see cases again”, adding that “elimination is not a point in time, it is a sustained effort”.

New Zealand has seen 1,154 confirmed cases and 22 deaths from Covid-19 since the virus arrived in late February, but has been widely praised for its handling of the crisis.

  • India re-opens more public spaces despite record virus infections

Malls and temples re-opened in several cities across India on Monday despite the country recording a record daily number of new Coronavirus infections, with the pandemic expected to ravage the country for weeks to come.

After a 10-week lockdown the government has risked lifting some restrictions in a bid to ease the devastating blow to the economy dealt by the Coronavirus.

But the number of new cases rose by 9,983 to 256,611, according to government figures announced Monday, putting the country of 1.3 billion on course to overtake Britain and Spain among nations with the highest number of infections.

The reported death toll of 7,135 is much lower than reported in other badly-hit countries, but the epidemic is only expected to peak locally in July, according to health experts.

Still, in the capital Delhi, shopping malls, restaurants, temples and mosques were allowed to re-open for the first time since March 25.

The response was tentative, however, and only a trickle of people returned to some places of worship.

Businessman Mohit Budhiraja, wearing a mask and carrying sanitiser, went to his local temple in eastern Delhi for the first time since the lockdown.

“It felt like something was missing when I couldn’t come to the temple for all these weeks,” he said.

“I hope things improve, but now I will come every day.”

Many temples set up sanitisation tunnels at their entrances and barred worshippers from bringing offerings.

“People are having their temperature tested twice before they get in,” said Ravindra Goel, a trustee of the Jhandewalan temple, one of the oldest in Delhi.

The 400-year-old Jama Masjid mosque – one of the biggest in India – planned to allow the faithful in just three times a day instead of the usual five.

    Major hit

Delhi is one of India’s worst Coronavirus hotspots, accounting for more than 27,600 cases and 761 deaths – although media reports say the real figures are much higher.

Mumbai, which accounts for around a fifth of India’s cases and hospitals have been overrun, was more cautious. Roadside shops were allowed to re-open, but malls, restaurants and hair salons remained shuttered.

The Indian government says the tough lockdown it ordered on March 25 has limited the spread of the Coronavirus.

But it is now braced for a major hit to the economy, with millions of labourers now jobless.

Rating agencies have said the economy could contract by more than five percent this year, after average growth of about seven percent over the past decade.

Despite restrictions being eased last month, India’s manufacturing sector is struggling to restart because of an exodus of migrant workers prompted by the virus lockdown.

Big cities – once an attractive destination for workers from poor, rural regions – have been hit by reverse migration as millions of labourers fled to their village homes.

“A lot of the manufacturing industry is actually located in the very states where the pandemic’s impact has been great,” Professor Santosh Mehrotra at Jawaharlal Nehru University told AFP last week.

“Now these are the areas where naturally workers have left in large numbers… They will not return in a hurry.”

  • Erection doesnt mean men want sex; they get raped too and suffer in silence – Stephanie Benson

Just like the ‘no means no’ campaign against women being raped, Stephanie Benson is saying that erection doesn’t mean a man has given his consent to have sex too and that must be respected.

The Ghanaian singer was bringing to mind that men suffer from sexual abuse too and that must be addressed. “Men are raped too and suffer in silence. The rules apply for both sexes. Young boys and young adult men are also raped

According to the 52-year-old outspoken singer, she has received complaints from men who have ever been raped. “Men DM me all the time suffering from depression, and suicidal thoughts, because of Rape. Let’s give it the attention it deserves as well,” she wrote to a video of herself explaining the worrying issue.

Stephanie Benson’s comments are coming amid campaigns against rape flooding social media due to some rape cases that have hit the Nigerian social media and entertainment space. Speaking on the issue, the Ghanaian singer condemned the act and sympathized with women and children who get raped before chipping in that men get raped too.

The quarantine has also provoked fierce criticism from the aviation and travel industries, with the boss of Ryanair labelling it ineffective and a “political stunt”.

  • George Floyd: Minneapolis council pledges to dismantle police department

A majority of Minneapolis City Council has pledged to dismantle the local police department, a significant move amid nationwide protests sparked by George Floyd’s death last month.

Nine of the 13 councillors said a “new model of public safety” would be created in a city where law enforcement has been accused of racism.

Mayor Jacob Frey earlier opposed the move, drawing boos from the crowds.

Activists, who for years have defended such a move, called it a turning point.

But commentators say Minneapolis can now expect a long and complex debate over-policing.

Mr Floyd’s death in police custody triggered mass protests against racism and police brutality. Security measures across the country were lifted on Sunday as unrest started to ease.

Thousands of people are expected to gather on Monday for a public viewing of Mr Floyd’s body in Houston, his home city in Texas before he moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. A private funeral will be held on Tuesday.

A video of Mr Floyd, a 46-year-old African American, pinned to the floor with a white police officer kneeling on his neck for almost nine minutes sparked worldwide outrage.

Officer Derek Chauvin has been dismissed and charged with second-degree murder. He will make his first court appearance later on Monday.

Three other officers who were at the scene have also been sacked and charged with aiding and abetting.

  • Government tackles Kumasi floods ahead of rains

The perennial floods that cause nightmarish moments for most of the residents of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region look likely to stop this year.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, has announced that most of the bridges in the flood-prone areas in Kumasi will be fixed and big drains desilted, because heavy rains are being anticipated.

Some residents of the city, especially those that live in the flood-prone areas, always encounter difficult moments during rainy seasons and there have been instances where the annual floods have destroyed valuable properties or even led to deaths.

He said the government was aware of the situation and had subsequently rolled out a plan to help curb the perennial floods before the rains set in.

Mr. Osei-Mensah, who was interacting with journalists in Kumasi, said “we have carried out a research and realized that in some places their bridges are too small and as a result it leads to floods whenever it rains. Government has, therefore, planned ahead to reconstruct some of the smaller bridges into bigger bridges in order to help curb the floods,” he said.

For instance, the minister said a smaller bridge at TUC Junction, where it floods easily during rainy seasons, may be reconstructed.

He announced that the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) had commenced the desilting of some choked drains ahead of the rains.

The minister lauded the KMA for a good work done to help stop floods and urged other assemblies to emulate that shining example.

Besides, he admonished Kumasi residents to keep their environment clean at all times to help stop floods in the city.

  • Immigration Service intercepts 79 bags of cocoa beans being smuggled to Togo

Officials from Akanu Sector Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) have intercepted 79 un-standardised bags of raw cocoa beans being smuggled out of Ghana to neighbouring Togo.

The arrest was made at about 0148 hours on June 04, 2020 at Deme in the Ketu North Municipality, when some five persons attempted transporting the goods in five Apsonic motorcycles through an unapproved route to Togo.

The suspects, Mr Vincent Tortise, Mr Felix Henyo, Mr Christian Dzamesi, Mr Emmanuel Adator and Mr Amos Korshi currently on self-enquiry bail, were using motorcycles with registration numbers, M-18-VR 3176, M-19-VR 653, M-20-VR 383, M-19-VD 2443 and one unregistered one.

Mr Felix Agyeman-Bosompeh, the Sector Commander during the official handing over of the impounded goods to officials from Volta/Oti Region of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) said the Command had information on the intended smuggling of the cocoa beans necessitating a patrol team to be on alert to foil the plan.

He said the suspects tested the alertness of the patrol team by first smuggling 10 bags of fertilizer across the border on two trips and feeling assured that they were safe to operate, attempted transporting the “five motorcycles fully loaded with the cocoa beans.”

Mr Agyeman-Bosompem said his men were committed to duty and had stepped up anti-smuggling operations saying, “We make a lot of interceptions all the time including; vehicles with planting for food and Jobs (PFJ) fertilizers and marijuana.”

The Sector Commander therefore warned all smugglers thinking the Akanu area was an easy route for them to ply their trade to desist as, “this terrain is as rough as they can imagine” and called on his officers to always be professional and not countenance any individual or group to beat the system.

Mr Wisdom Delali Amexame, Volta/Oti Regional Head, COCOBOD said his outfit was collaborating with border security agencies to arrest the smuggling of cocoa beans out of the country to enable government recoup part of its investments in the cocoa sector and the needed revenue for infrastructure development in the country.

“Government makes huge investment including; providing seedlings to farmers, mass spraying, cocoa pollination, mass pruning and subsidised fertilizers to improve yields and so, I see such farmers who after all these find means to smuggle their cocoa beans out of Ghana to deny government revenue, as unpatriotic. Last week, our Boss was in the region and described these farmers as evil and I agree with him on that,” he said.

Mr Amexame added that COCOBOD recently announced it was going to construct the Have-Jasikan stretch of the Eastern Corridor Road and the only “means we get revenue to carry out the projects is when farmers bring their produce to us to buy and not smuggle them out.”

  • Trump ‘drifted away’ from constitution, says ex-military chief Colin Powell

Former US Secretary of State Colin Powell has strongly criticised President Donald Trump’s handling of anti-racism protests, saying he has “drifted away” from the constitution.

The Republican, a former top military officer, is the latest to condemn Mr Trump’s response, including his threats to use the army to quell unrest.

He said he would vote for Democratic candidate Joe Biden in November’s poll.

President Trump responded by calling Mr Powell “highly overrated”.

Mr Powell, the only African American so far to have served as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has joined a growing list of former top military officials to have launched scathing attacks on President Trump.

It comes amid days of nationwide protests against racism and police brutality sparked by the death of African-American George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis on 25 May.

On Sunday, nine of 13 Minneapolis City Council members pledged in front of hundreds of protesters to dismantle the local police department and instead create “a new model of public safety that actually keeps our community safe”.

Meanwhile, security measures across the US were lifted as unrest started to ease. New York ended its nearly week-long curfew, and Mr Trump said he was ordering the National Guard to start withdrawing from Washington DC.

  • Coronavirus: UK travel quarantine rules come into effect

New rules requiring all people arriving in the UK to self-isolate for 14 days have come into effect.

Those arriving by plane, ferry or train – including UK nationals – will have to provide an address where they will self-isolate and face fines of up to £1,000 if they do not follow the rules.

Home Secretary Priti Patel said the laws were designed “to prevent a second wave” of coronavirus.

But some industries have warned they will be severely impacted by the rules.

Anyone arriving from the Republic of Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man does not have to complete the form or enter quarantine.

There are also exemptions for workers in some industries such as road haulage and medical professionals who are providing essential care.

All other travellers have to fill in a “public health passenger locator” form on arrival. Failure to do so could lead to a penalty of £100, or travellers may be refused entry.

If they are unable to provide an address, the government will arrange accommodation at the traveller’s expense. There will also be checks to see whether the rules are being followed.

The government has faced criticism from the aviation industry and some Tory MPs over the measures, but Ms Patel said the measures were “proportionate” and being implemented “at the right time”.

“The science is clear that if we limit the risk of new cases being brought in from abroad, we can help stop a devastating second wave,” Ms Patel said.

Those arriving in England and Northern Ireland could face a fine of £1,000 if they fail to self-isolate for the full 14 days, while they face a £480 fine in Scotland. The maximum fine for repeat offenders in Scotland is £5,000. The enforcement rules in Wales are not clear.

  • ‘Virus drains no-deal Brexit medicines stockpiles’

The UK has been warned by the pharmaceutical industry that stockpiles of medical supplies have been “used up entirely” by the coronavirus pandemic.

A memo seen by the BBC advises the government to buy and store “critical” medicines to treat the virus.

Drugmakers fear stockpiles cannot feasibly be built back up again, if the UK should fail to strike a post-Brexit trade deal with the EU.

The government said “robust contingency plans are in place”.

The spokesperson added: “We want a relationship with the EU which is based on friendly cooperation between sovereign equals and centred on free trade.”

However, firms fear disruption to global supply chains will seriously impact the NHS.

The internal pharmaceutical industry memo, which was prepared for the government in May, warns that after the pandemic ends, there will be “less or zero product available in the market to allow for stockpiling a broad range of products” than there was in 2019, when stockpiling occurred in preparation for a possible no-deal Brexit.

At the time, the industry itself paid for six weeks’ worth of stockpiles.

“Preparations for the end of the transition period must complement plans to secure the supply of coronavirus therapeutic and supportive products,” the memo says.

The pandemic has led to a massive increase in demand for medicines not previously stockpiled for critical care and respiratory medicines, such as inhalers.

The self-declared republic of Somaliland has freed controversial Somali journalist Abdimalik Muse Oldon following a presidential amnesty.

Mr Oldon had been behind bars for more than 13 months. He was found guilty of defamation and spreading false news by a court in Hargeisa in July 2019 and sentenced to three and half years in prison.

He has repeatedly denied all the charges and his lawyers termed the judgement as injustice.

Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi on Saturday ordered for his release following pressure from opposition leaders and human rights groups.

This was the second time Mr Oldon was released through a presidential pardon.

“I was released after the leaders of UCID (For Justice and Development) and Waddani political parties spoke to Somaliland President,” Mr Oldon told BBC Somali Service.

He said he was treated well while in prison but had become ill.

Since Somalia’s civil war and the collapse of government in 1991, Somaliland has been a self-declared independent state and has its own government. However, it is not officially recognised by the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU) or any country.

  • George Floyd: New York and Washington see security ease

Security measures in the US have been lifted as unrest over the death in police custody of African-American George Floyd eases.

New York ended its nearly week-long curfew and President Donald Trump said he was ordering the National Guard to start withdrawing from Washington DC.

The unrest has largely been replaced by largely peaceful worldwide protests against racism and police brutality.

Black Lives Matter protests continued on Sunday in European nations.

George Floyd died in police custody in Minneapolis on 25 May. Video showed him pinned to the floor, with a white police officer kneeling on his neck for almost nine minutes.

Officer Derek Chauvin has been dismissed and charged with murder. Three other officers who were at the scene have also been sacked and charged with aiding and abetting.

Mr Floyd’s funeral is scheduled for Tuesday in Houston, his home city before he moved to Minneapolis.

US Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is due to travel to Texas on Monday to meet Mr Floyd’s family ahead of the service and offer his condolences, two senior aides told Reuters news agency. He is not expected to attend the funeral.

Mr Biden also took to Twitter on Sunday to hit out at Mr Trump’s handling of the protests, saying he had “callously used his [words as a president] to incite violence, stoke the flames of hatred and division, and drive us further apart”.

Hours earlier, President Trump had tweeted that the National Guard could start withdrawing from the capital as “everything is under perfect control”.

“They will be going home, but can quickly return, if needed. Far fewer protesters showed up last night than anticipated!” he said.

The National Guard is the reserve military force that can be called on by the US president or state governors to intervene in domestic emergencies.

Washington had seen angry protests outside the White House, particularly last Monday when demonstrators were cleared for Mr Trump to walk to a nearby church.

Saturday’s massive protest in the capital was peaceful.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted: “We are lifting the curfew, effective immediately. Yesterday and last night we saw the very best of our city.”

The end of the curfew comes a day before New York enters the first phase of its plan to reopen after more than two months of lockdown due to the coronavirus outbreak.

“Tomorrow we take the first big step to restart. Keep staying safe. Keep looking out for each other,” Mr de Blasio said.

New York has seen its fair share of violence in the past week, with looting of luxury stores in Manhattan, scores of arrests and the burning of dozens of police cars.

There were also accusations against the police, including the beating of protesters. One patrol car was also driven into a crowd of protesters, sparking a row between politicians.

Many major US cities that saw unrest have now lifted curfews, including San Francisco and Los Angeles, although a few protests have still led to clashes.

    Where are protests continuing now?

Sunday has seen more demonstrations taking place across Europe under the banner of Black Lives Matter.

In Madrid, thousands of people marched carrying anti-racism placards and wearing masks to observe coronavirus measures, although images showed social distancing was not being followed.

Outside the US embassy in Madrid, protesters shouted “I can’t breathe”, echoing Mr Floyd’s last words. Others took a knee to observe the mark of protest that originated in the US against police brutality and racism.

Similar protests were held in Rome, where protesters fell silent for roughly the same time that George Floyd was pinned down.

There have also been events in Brussels, Copenhagen and in several places in the UK.

Protesters in Bristol tore down a statue of Edward Colston, a prominent 17th Century slave trader.

    What happened on Saturday?

Huge peaceful rallies took place across the US.

Tens of thousands of people gathered in Washington DC, in the city’s largest protest so far, many of them at the newly renamed Black Lives Matter Plaza outside Lafayette Park.

There were also massive protests in San Francisco, Chicago and Los Angeles.

There was even a protest in the small, east Texas town of Vidor, once infamous as a Ku Klux Klan stronghold.

Dozens of white and black protesters carrying Black Lives Matter banners rallied in a place previously known as a “sundown town” because blacks did not venture out after dark.

Though the vast majority of protests were peaceful, both Portland and Seattle saw unrest on Saturday night, with projectiles thrown and arrests made.

Meanwhile, people paid their respects to Mr Floyd in North Carolina, where he was born, with a memorial service held.

  • Ofankor ‘killer’ landlord is a suspected coronavirus patient Prosecutor to Court

The prosecutor in the case in which a landlord at Ofankor in Accra murdered his tenant has told the Abeka District Court that the suspect may be a COVID-19 patient.

According to the prosecution, the suspect has already tested for the virus and is awaiting his results.

This came to light after the suspect who appeared in court today [Monday] was spotted on the court premises but was not allowed out of the police vehicle that brought him.

Court Correspondent Muntalla Inusah reports that soon after the Magistrate, Achamaa Ofosu adjourned the case to June 22, 2020, the accused was immediately taken back for quarantine after the court was informed that the accused person is a suspect for COVID-19.

Meanwhile, family members and friends of the late Benjamin Okyere who was shot to death by his landlord are demanding justice.

According to the family members present at the court, the accused ought to be killed in the manner their family member was killed for justice to prevail to satisfy the principle “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.”

The angry loved ones clad in red and black held posters with inscriptions like “Justice, we need Justice, God is our helper,” and chanted war songs.

  • Doctors on coronavirus duty, others begin strike next week

The National Association of Resident Doctors, the umbrella body of all doctors working in government health facilities, has issued a notice of strike effective Monday, June 15, 2020.

The association said the call to strike also includes doctors attending to COVID-19 patients and other emergencies.

The National President of NARD, Dr Aliyu Sokomba, said this in an official letter with reference number NARD/SG/2019-2020/070620/246.

The NARD President said the strike would be total regardless of the current pandemic.

Sokomba said the action had become necessary due to the failure of the government to redeem its pledges especially in the areas of salary arrears and working conditions.

The letter read in part, “The strike shall, therefore, be total and indefinite. No service of any kind, be it emergency, care at COVID-19 treatment centres shall be exempted and members including all resident doctors, medical officers below the rank of a principal medical officer, and house officers are expected to be part of the strike.”

While sympathising with Nigerians and patients as a whole, the doctors said they could no longer condone government neglect.

NARD said the plight of its members in state health facilities was sometimes worse than those at the federal institutions.

  • George Floyd death: Protesters tear down slave trader statue

A slave trader’s statue in Bristol has been torn down and thrown into the harbour during a second day of anti-racism protests across the UK.

It comes after largely peaceful demonstrations in London on Saturday ended in some clashes with police.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick urged protesters to find another way to make their views heard.

But thousands of protesters massed for a second day outside the US embassy in London before moving towards Whitehall.

Other protests have been taking place in Manchester, Wolverhampton, Nottingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

In Bristol, protesters used ropes to pull down the bronze statue of Edward Colston, a prominent 17th Century slave trader, who has been a source of controversy in the city for many years.

Colston was a member of the Royal African Company, which transported about 80,000 men, women and children from Africa to the Americas.

On his death in 1721, he bequeathed his wealth to charities and his legacy can still be seen on Bristol’s streets, memorials and buildings.

After the statue was toppled, a protester posed with his knee on the figure’s neck – reminiscent of the video showing George Floyd, the black man who died while being restrained by a Minnesota police officer.

The statue was later dragged through the streets of Bristol and thrown into the harbour. The empty plinth was used as a makeshift stage for protesters.

Home Secretary Priti Patel called the tearing down of the statue “utterly disgraceful”, adding that “it speaks to the acts of public disorder that have become a distraction from the cause people are protesting about”.

“It’s right the police follow up and make sure that justice is undertaken with those individuals that are responsible for such disorderly and lawless behaviour,” she said.

In a statement, Avon & Somerset police confirmed there would be an investigation into the “act of criminal damage”.

Historian Prof David Olusoga told BBC News that the statue should have been taken down long before.

He said: “Statues are about saying ‘This was a great man who did great things.’ That is not true, he [Colston] was a slave trader and a murderer.”

    ‘Proud of young people’

Aerial footage in London showed thousands more protesters flooding the roads outside the US embassy in Vauxhall, south London before marching towards Parliament Square and Downing Street.

They appeared to be ignoring warnings from both the police commissioner and Health Secretary Matt Hancock not to congregate and risk spreading the coronavirus.

But free masks, gloves and hand gel were being handed out by volunteers.

Labour’s Lisa Nandy backed the demonstrations, saying people “cannot be silent in the face of racism”.

The shadow foreign secretary said young people were “right to raise their voices” but urged demonstrators to take precautions and socially distance amid fears that the mass gatherings could prompt another spike in coronavirus cases.

Ms Nandy told the BBC’s Andrew Marr she was “proud” of young people demanding change following mass anti-racism protests across the UK on Saturday.

“I think it’s one of the most important things about living in a free society is that people can go out and protest,” she said.

    Officers injured

While protests across the UK on Saturday were largely peaceful, some clashes broke out between police and people gathered near Downing Street in the evening.

Missiles and fireworks were aimed at police and bikes were also thrown by some demonstrators.

The Metropolitan Police said 14 officers were injured, including a mounted officer who came off a horse as it bolted down Whitehall, with a further 13 hurt during demonstrations earlier in the week.

Dame Cressida said she was “appalled” by the scenes of unrest on Saturday night, which led to 14 arrests.

In a statement on Sunday, she added: “There is no place for violence in our city. Officers displayed extreme patience and professionalism throughout a long and difficult day, and I thank them for that.

“I would urge protesters to please find another way to make your views heard which does not involve coming out on the streets of London, risking yourself, your families and officers as we continue to face this deadly virus.”

Ms Patel condemned the actions of those involved and said there was “no excuse for violent behaviour”.

“These protests should stop, they should not go ahead and people must be mindful and stick with the rules that have been put in place.

“We have guidelines that basically say it is illegal for gatherings of more than six people to get together…. It is not in the interest of public health and it is certainly not going to assist the NHS or protect lives.”

Prof John Edmunds, an member of the government’s scientific advisory group, Sage, said – even with reduced transmission outdoors – the large numbers protesting increased the risk of spread.

“If you have a crowd of a few thousand people you would expect some of those people to be infectious,” he said.

“And we know that the infection can be passed on by people who don’t have symptoms.”

  • Money is good, See old pictures of Kante selling sugarcane and sachet water

Everyone who is familiar with football should definitely know the France/Chelsea midfielder Ngolo Kante.

He is a one time world cup winner, one time Europa league winner, one time first eleven player in the world, one F.A Cup and also two times EPL winner.

He is considered as one of the most successful footballer of this present era,and His kind of play in the midfield is comparable to no one as He is known to have some of the best tackles and also very much attacking minded as He has bagged some number of goals as a midfielder which is really rare among midfielders.

Well, the truth is that Ngolo Kante has really had a rough time growing up in France as He once posted some pictures of Himself selling Sachet Water and Sugarcane in His country just to make ends meet.He once said in an interview that during the 2014 world cup,He was amongst those who were selling sachet water to people who were watching at match centres, also He stated that He never knew He would reach the height He has attained in just a few number of years.

Because of how His childhood was,He is known to always be shy in the field and that is the reason why He doesn’t talk at all in the football field and also,He is notable of giving to those in need all the time.

The midfielder is earning 150,000 Euros per week in Chelsea and His contract extends till 2023,but one shocking thing about the midfielder are the kind of cars He drives as they are believed to be way lower than His standards. He has announced that He isn’t really interested in flashy cars of homes instead,He believes in giving to the needy because He knows how hard can be at tiimes.

In conclusion, I believe that everyone who is striving to make it in the football world should emulate his humbleness because its really one of a kind.

  • 600 nurses killed by coronavirus worldwide

Statistics from the International Council of Nurses (I.C.N.) indicates that over 600 nurses across the world have been killed by COVID-19.

Approximately 230,000 health-care workers have also contracted the virus.

Howard Catton, the Chief Executive Officer of International Council of Nurses (I.C.N.) noted that, “We need a central database of reliable, standardized, comparable data on all infections, periods of quarantine and deaths that are directly or indirectly related COVID-19.”

He noted that the death toll could be higher as they were not getting reliable statistics from some countries.

In Ghana at least 13 doctors have contracted the virus according to the Ghana Medical Association. Close to 30 nurses have the virus.

  • Liberia to reopen airport and hotels in a fortnight

Liberian President George Weah says the country has made enough progress against the coronavirus to allow the reopening of the international airport and hotels in two weeks’ time.

A state of emergency which is due to end next Tuesday will not be renewed.

To date, 345 cases of the virus have been confirmed in Liberia, with 30 deaths.

Due to very low levels of testing, the full extent of the disease is uncertain.

Correspondents say although schools have shut and an overnight curfew is in place, most people have carried on with their lives as normal during the state of emergency, with markets still busy and shops open.

  • Bail for Zimbabwe politicians accused of lockdown breach

A number of opposition figures arrested for allegedly breaching Zimbabwe’s lockdown rules have been released on $1,000 (£789) bail each.

Tendai Biti, Lynette Karenyi-Kore, David Chimhini, Gladys Hlatywayo, Lovemore Chinoputsa and Vongai Tome – all of the MDC party – were arrested on Friday for gathering at a building in the capital Harare that had been occupied overnight by a rival faction with the help of military and police.

The takeover was condemned by the US embassy, which called the security forces’ actions “politicised”.

All six were freed on bail on Saturday after being charged with “criminal nuisance” and breaching Covid-19 regulations banning gatherings of more than 50.

Their lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa said she would file a complaint, and called the arrests “ironic” because police themselves did not enforce social distancing rules in her clients’ cells nor supply “masks or any sanitisers despite request”.

  • Iran says virus uptick due to increased testing

Iran’s health ministry said Sunday a surge in new reported Coronavirus infections was due to increased testing rather than a worsening outbreak.

After hitting a near two-month low in early May and a lifting of tough movement restrictions, cases of the COVID-19 illness have been rising in Islamic republic which is battling the Middle East’s deadliest outbreak of the disease.

“The main reason for rising numbers is that we started identifying (infected people) with no or light symptoms,” said Mohammad-Mehdi Gouya, the health ministry’s head epidemiologist.

He added that the gradual easing of lockdown measures had also contributed to higher infections “which has more or less happened all over the world,” ISNA news agency reported.

Authorities have progressively lifted restrictions imposed to tackle the virus, and activity has almost returned to normal in most of the country’s 31 provinces.

Ministry spokesman Kianoush Jahanpour said the situation had steadily improved with fewer hospitalisations, critical cases and deaths.

“It is only normal for infections to slightly grow after reopenings,” he said in televised remarks Sunday.

He confirmed 2,364 new infections in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number to 171,789.

Yet 2,596 of total patients hospitalised were in “critical” condition on Sunday, with the number seemingly on a rising trajectory since Thursday, when Iran reported record high daily infections.

Jahanpour noted that 72 more people had died in the same period, raising the overall toll to 8,281.

There has been scepticism at home and abroad about Iran’s official figures, with concerns the real toll could be much higher.

Rising infection figuress since a low in early May and lax observance of social distancing have worried authorities, which have reiterated calls for strict adherence to health protocols.

  • Letter from Africa: Why Nigerians are muting their mothers on WhatsApp

In our series of letters from African writers, Nigerian novelist Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani says children are now having to police their credulous parents on WhatsApp.

Just a few years ago, local comedians had a field day with jokes about elderly Nigerian mothers and their nonchalant attitudes towards their mobile phones.

They needed their children’s assistance to type and send text messages or log in to their accounts and read emails.

And their frequent excuse for missed calls was: “My phone was in my handbag.”

These days, the jokes have upgraded to Nigerian mothers and their infatuation with WhatsApp, the most popular messaging app in Africa.

Nigerian comedians like Maraji have been making skits about them.

“My mother spends her entire morning on WhatsApp,” 39-year-old Udo, whose home is in Lagos, told me.

“Throughout while she’s having her breakfast and drinking her tea, she’s checking people’s status updates and watching videos.”

    ‘Relevant messages’

Unlike Twitter and Instagram, WhatsApp can work even when internet connections are iffy, as is often the case in many parts of Nigeria.

And it requires no profiles or passwords, so the generation that mostly retired from active life before access to the internet became common in Nigeria finds it easy to use. In fact, it is their internet.

A common complaint among younger Nigerians is the number and nature of WhatsApp messages they receive from their mothers.

“You just wake up in the morning and you see 10 videos from your mother,” 41-year-old Ihuoma, who lives in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, told me.

“And each one begins with: ‘You must watch this!’ ‘This will help somebody!’ Those are always the opening lines.”

Her 76-year-old mother, Patty, told me that all the messages she forwards are “relevant”.

“I don’t send frivolous messages at all,” she said.

“Why I send those things to my children, it is a form of education, lifting up of minds, sharing knowledge, experiences. I consider it a sort of fellowship, sharing with my children.”

Ihuoma has since muted her mother’s WhatsApp account and rarely opens her messages.

For many Nigerian mothers, the ability to broadcast ready-made messages via WhatsApp is like a superpower.

It enables them to transmit unsolicited prayers, advice and opinions.

One woman who complained on Twitter about her mother putting onions in the corner of every room in the house – touted on WhatsApp as a way to absorb toxins – received replies saying their mothers had also followed the erroneous advice.

“In our family group, my mother was always forwarding me and my siblings different health suggestions, concoctions to mix and drink,” said Udo.

“When I pointed out to her that some of them are questionable, she replied: ‘You never know, just try it and see.’”

Her mother also forwarded gory videos of kidnap victims and crime scenes, insisting that her children needed to see these to be aware and beware.

“That’s when I left the family group and felt I could not do this any more,” Udo said.

“My brother blocked her, which hurt her a lot. But she wouldn’t listen. She keeps forwarding.”

Thongs, cancer and other fanciful warnings

A number of people told me that they also had blocked their mothers on WhatsApp but did not want to let them know.

“I was once involved in an online debate about this,” Ihuoma said.

“Some people were of the opinion that they wanted to block their mothers but couldn’t get themselves to do that to someone who had carried them in the womb for nine months.”

They were tired of the advice and cautions, mostly from conservative or religious mothers who have always had a problem with their more liberal-minded children’s lifestyles.

Warnings, for example, signed by unknown medical experts, explaining how wearing thongs can cause cancer and how tight skirts can lead to heart attacks.

All stories accompanied by videos and photos.

Affordable internet access became common in Nigeria just a few years ago, so this generation of elderly Nigerians was hardly exposed to the wonders of Photoshop and the ingenuity of idle minds that invent stories just for fun and clicks.

    The Wuhan ‘dragon’

And so, they tend to believe most information they come across, especially when there is visual “evidence”.

“My mother sent me and my siblings a video of a dragon-like creature fleeing towards the sky,” said 40-year-old Grace, who lives in Lagos.

“She said we should see, that coronavirus was finally leaving the earth.”

  • Brazil’s domestic workers cut adrift in pandemic

Days after Brazil registered its first Coronavirus death in March, the country began to close down. Businesses and restaurants were shuttered and people were told to stay home.

That’s when Rosangela Jesus dos Santos’s life changed unimaginably. The 47-year-old diarista, or daily housekeeper, was fired by most of her employers.

“They said it was because of the virus,” she says. “I went to a different house every day of the week and some clients are elderly, I understand.”

Rosangela is scared. She hopes she can return when the outbreak is over but, for now, she’s been left working just one day a week. Her remaining employer gives her a mask but at no point have they told her to stay home for her safety. She’s wary of the virus but she knows if she doesn’t work, she won’t get paid. Brazil has now seen more than 670,000 cases and almost 36,000 deaths.

“I need to work – my family is big, that’s the truth,” she says, adding: “I would like to be working and I’m used to it, going out early and coming home late.”

  • Ohemaa Mercy has left her matrimonial home – Afia Schwarzenegger alleges

Controversial media personality Valentina Nana Agyeiwaa aka Afia Schwarzenegger has alleged that award-winning gospel musician Ohemaa Mercy’s marriage has collapsed for almost a year now.

In a video released on her Youtube page, Afia Schwarzenegger alleged that the ‘Edin Jesus’ hitmaker packed her belongings from her matrimonial home two days after her annual Tehilla Experience Concert in August 2019.

“Ohemaa Mercy left her marital home in August two days after her Tehilla Concert. If only the information is correct then coming August will be exactly one year she left her home. The man has claimed lordship over the house. The children were also not allowed to see her, until recently.”

According to Afia Schwarzenegger, the husband of Ohemaa Mercy, Mr. Isaac Twum-Ampofo, is alleged to have cheated on his wife with some of her backup singers.

“Information available indicates that Ohemaa Mercy caught her husband having sex with her backup artiste a day to her Tehilla Concert,” she said in the Twi dialect.

Mr. Isaac Twum-Ampofo, according to the media personality, is also feeding bloggers with news that he believes he’s not the real father of their third child.

“But Ohemaa Mercy’s husband threatened her. He’s going around telling bloggers that his wife has cheated on him. And he believes their last born is not his.”

Trying so much to cripple his wife, Afia claimed, the man made a quick to register Tehilla Experience in his name, although he is not a musician.

Not only that, she alleged that Mr. Isaac Twum-Ampofo has also taken access to all her social media pages, with the excuse that he created the pages for her in the capacity as a manager.

“He has gone a step further to register Tehilla Experience…Also if you don’t hear from Ohemaa Mercy on social media, it’s because her husband claims he opened the accounts for her. The man has also claimed ownership of the house,” she added.

The couple who have been married for almost 18 years have 3 children together.

  • NPP suspends all cursing delegates

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has instructed constituency executives to suspend, with immediate effect, all delegates who invoked curses on leadership over the disqualification of some parliamentary aspirants.

These delegates of the party resorted to invoking deities to register their dissatisfaction with the national executives for not allowing some aspirants to contest and others to be contested.

According to some of them, the grounds for disqualification of some of these aspirants were not legitimate and just a move to ensure that incumbent Members of Parliament, in particular, go unopposed.

In the Offinso South Constituency, for instance, some delegates slaughtered a ram in River Offin and performed some rituals after they complained that the National Vetting Committee is scheming to have incumbent MP Ben Abdallah Banda go unopposed.

But addressing a press conference on Monday, June 8, General Secretary John Boadu said all those delegates stand suspended.

He said the party will not countenance such behaviour and the necessary sanctions will apply.

The primaries are scheduled to be held on Saturday, June 20 across the country but only in constituencies where the NPP has sitting MPs

  • Churches reopening is ‘great blessing’ – Archbishop

Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the Archbishop of Westminster, says it is a “great blessing” that English churches will soon be able to open their doors to worshippers again.

The government is set to announce next week that all places of worship in England can allow private individual prayer from 15 June.

Nichols said: “Not every Catholic church will be open on 15 June. Local decisions and provision have to lead this process. But it is a great blessing for individuals and for the benefit of all in society, that church doors will again be open to all who long to pray there for the peace and grace we need today.”

According to The Sunday Times, the government might soon also allow outdoor weddings, currently limited to Jews and Quakers. The report also claims restrictions on weddings and funerals will be eased to enable up to 10 people to attend such occasions indoors from early July.
