  • New Voters’ Register: Don’t register your names – Nana B appeals to NDC

Nana Boakye, National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has appealed to members and supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) not to participate in the new voters’ register by Electoral Commission (EC).

The registration exercise will begin in the last week of June 2020.

The EC piloted the exercise on 2nd and 3rd June to test their machines and also assess the process in order to prevent any mishaps during the main exercise.

Although the EC has justified its decision to conduct the exercise aimed at compiling a new voters’ register, the NDC has raised red flag over the exercise.

The opposition party has dragged the EC to the Supreme Court praying the court to direct the Commission to act according to the constitution because, to the party, the Commission’s decision for a new voters’ register contravenes its constitutional mandate.

The NDC has also accused the EC of trying to rig the 2020 elections.

Speaking to host Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s ”Kokrokoo”, Nana Boakye, popularly called Nana B asked the opposition party to stop fighting so hard against the EC and just abstain from the exercise.

”I want the Electoral Commission to commence the process but I plead with the NDC members and supporters not to register their names. Don’t write your names. I have started mobilizing our youth. We’re going to register in our millions. And if you think you are a man with strong muscles, just come to the polling station where the youth are registering their names and cause commotion, and you will taste the wrath of the security forces. It’s a legitimate exercise. It’s by law and they don’t break any laws,” he said.

  • Registration exercise: Nobody will die in Ghana – Charles Owusu rubbishes incendiary comments

‘Nobody will die in this country’, Charles Owusu rubbishes the seditious comments by PNC National Chairman Bernard Mornah and other politicians.

The Head of the Monitoring Unit of the Forestry Commission, Charles Owusu, says neither the Electoral Commission’s registration exercise or general elections is a do or die affair for any person to lose his or her life for a candidate.

According to him, elections are an opportunity for Ghanaian eligible electorates to exercise their voting rights not for them to pick up arms for war.

”Nobody will die in this country. Just because of a registration, people should die; never! It’s a joke. Nobody should pay attention to it. There are laws in this country. No person can take the laws into their hands and do anything in this countr,” he charged.

    Inflammatory Comments/CID Arrest

Charles Owusu’s comment comes on the heels of inflammatory remarks by Bernard Mornah and Major Osahene Boakye Gyan (rtd) who have been invited by the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service.

Bernard Mornah is said to have threatened the Electoral Commission saying ”people who are already Ghanaians and already registered are going to be taken out of the register, don’t you think confusion will come at the registration and if confusion come there, you think the EC staff will be safe, we will beat each other there, we will kill each other there if that is what the EC want to lead this nation to”.

Major Osahene Boakye Gyan (rtd), on the other hand, challenged the EC’s decision to use only the Ghana card and passport for the new voters’ registration exercise, and cautioned by pointing out that most electoral disputes in Africa have resulted in civil wars and Ghana is not immune to it, and further warned that “should the EC continue to toe the line of their paymasters, it will certainly spell doom for this country.”

“… it is political motivation that led to the dismissal of Madam Jean Mensah as the EC Chairperson by the current administration. They want to beef up the numbers so they can win simply because they don’t have confidence in their winning numbers, otherwise, they won’t tamper with it…But more importantly…post-independence Africa, all crises and civil wars have been on the back of disputed electoral results. What they are doing now, they are driving us into a civil war and if they want it, they will get it,” he screamed.

    Why Should People Die?

Speaking on Peace FM’s ”Kokrokoo”, Mr Owusu who is also an aide to the Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, rebuked these political figures and warned others to refrain from making comments that seek to beat ”war drums” in the country.

”Sometimes, what is sad is when a person who has had the opportunity to lead this nation in various capacities, whether serving as a Minister, Chief Executive or any leader wishes doom for this country, forgetting that it is through this nation that they became prominent. In fact, what happens when we conclude the voting process? Someone will become President and so what? What really happens that is so extraordinary that a person must die before somebody becomes President in this country? We can’t preside over anything, you can’t rule over nothing apart from people. We are here because of others…So, if you are going to rule over people, then why should the people die before you become a ruler?” he questioned.

  • NDC/EC brouhaha: When the law speaks, all other voices are opinions – Charles Owusu on SC ruling

The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has announced the end of June 2020 to commence the registration exercise for the compilation of a new voters’ register.

The exercise was piloted on Tuesday, June 2 to assess their machines and ensure a smooth registration exercise.

Meanwhile, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has dragged the EC to the Supreme Court praying the court to direct the EC to include “all existing voter identification cards duly issued by the 2nd Defendant (EC) as one of the documents serving as proof of identification for registration as a voter for the purposes of public elections”.

The party further seeks a proper interpretation of Article 45(a) of the 1992 Constitution, on whether the EC has “the constitutional power to, and can, compile a register of voters only once, and thereafter revise it periodically, as may be determined by law” and also wants a declaration on whether the EC “can only revise the existing register of voters, and lacks the power to prepare a fresh register of voters, for the conduct of the December 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections”.

Speaking on Peace FM’s ”Kokrokoo” on Friday, the Head of Monitoring Unit at the Forestry Commission, Charles Owusu, has commended the NDC for resorting to the law court to address their grievances.

He believed the Supreme Court will be the ultimate finality on the NDC and EC brouhaha.

”When the law speaks, other voices are opinions. There is nothing we can do…When the court delivers its verdict, let’s all accept and allow the law to take its course”, he said.

  • China now Ghana’s biggest trade partner with volumes exceeding $7.4bn – Shi Ting Wang

China is now the biggest investor in Ghana with investments creating about 100,000 jobs for Ghanaian citizens with trade volumes exceeding $7.40 billion.

This was disclosed by the outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Shi Ting Wang, who paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional integration Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, on Friday, 5 June 2020.

“Now, we are the biggest investor in Ghana and our investment created about 100,000 jobs for the local people in addition to the government projects, the private investment to Ghana is also very strong. There are about 10 big private investor factories which were officially launched in the past two years, mainly in the manufacturing industry. Certainly, if we are talking about our people to people exchanges, we are also very proud of that. In the past two years, China has offered about six hundred full scholarships to Ghana and about 2000 short term training opportunities to Ghana,” he stated.

The ambassador attributed the development to increasing cooperation and partnership between Ghana and the Chinese government.

“We are the number one trade partners. Last year, the trade volume was $7.4 billion, ranking the seventh in the whole of Africa and in the past two years, there are so many projects rolling out between our two countries,” Mr Wang said.

  • Mark it, there will be no mass registration in Ghana – Eric Adjei swears

Eric Adjei, a member of the Communication team of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has sworn that the compilation of the New Voters’ register will not be held.

The NDC and the Inter-Party Resistance Against New Voters’ Register (IPRAN) have been consistently opposed to the idea of compiling a new voters’ register.

Aside their claim that the EC wants to rig the 2020 elections in favor of the incumbent government, they also argue the register, in its current form, is credible to be used for a general election so long as it has been used for other electoral exercises.

This notwithstanding, the Electoral Commission (EC) has announced the registration exercise will commence in the middle of June this year.

The exercise is aimed at compiling a new voters’ register for the 2020 general elections and subsequent Presidential and Parliamentary elections in the country.

The EC argues there is the need for a new register to replace the current one because the current register is bloated and therefore compiling a new voters’ register will help in eliminating unqualified names to ensure credible elections.

Eric Adjei contributing to a panel discussion on Peace FM ‘Platform’ programme, hosted by Nana Yaw Kesseh openly bragged: There will be no mass registration in this country; there will be no mass registration in Ghana take it from me…mark it on the wall; there will be no mass registration to compile a new register; we are using the existing register for the 2020 elections.”

Due to this, commercial vehicles do not operate in the Domeabra community. Residents and other inhabitants in neighbouring towns resultantly resort to use of motorbikes as their means of transportation.

Good road network and a clinic our major needs as a community.

Nyafomanghene, Nana Ansa Sasraku Nipa IV indicated that the deteriorating roads from Domeabra through to Nyafomang has been their major worry.

Aside the deplorable road, another burden on him is the unavailability of a health facility in the community.

According to the chief, he has forwarded their grievances to the DCE and is yet to receive feedback from authorities on that.

The road has been awarded to a contractor – DCE

In an interview with the DCE, Remond Nana Damptey, told the news team that the Domeabra road has been awarded to a contractor and hopefully, in the next 24 months, the people of Domeabra will have access to a bitumen road.

“The construction of the Domeabra road is dear to me more than the commuters. Water and a good road are the two major things this community needs. Government has awarded the road to a contractor who is readying himself to commerce work. The people of Domeabra will have a bitumen road in the next 24 months,” the DCE averred.

A resident who appeared skeptical about the DCE’s claim said “I can only believe the DCE is helping to fix our road when the contractor starts working on it. The reason being that, we are fed up with their lies”.

Residents however are yet to experience the commencement of the road project in Domeabra and its environs.

Consequently, Muslims are continuing their individual prayers at homes, checks by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) reveals.

Alhaji Mahmud Issaka, the Hohoe Municipal Chief Imam, in an interview with GNA said although the restrictions on religious activities were eased, the requirements demanded before the mosques were opened, are “a lot”.

He said a meeting held by all Imams in the Municipality, therefore, concluded that all mosques should remain closed until positive Covid-19 cases decreased and all restrictions are lifted.

Alhaji Issaka said they also realised that once the mosques were opened, a lot would be required to effect the protocols and breaching them after reopening would be counterproductive.

Mallam Mohammed Awal, an opinion leader at Hohoe Zongo noted that it was better to allow mosques to remain closed despite the easing of restrictions to curb the spread of the disease than to have even one person infected.

He called on all Muslims to continue to observe their individual prayers and pray for the end of the pandemic.

  • You can’t use me to resurrect your dead career – Danso Abiam replies AK Difaya

Danso Abiam, “Ghanaian lady” hitmaker, has debunked allegations leveled against him by Takoradi-based Hip Life artiste, AK Difaya.

2019 RTC Music Video of the year winner, AK Difaya, accused Danso Abiam of failing to come on set for his music video shoot after he was paid adding that his management also refused to refund the money.

In a quick rebuttal, Danso Abiam denied all these allegations leveled against him.

“I was advised by my management not to respond to AK Difaya’s unfounded allegations leveled against me. Ghana is not in normal times because of COVID-19. But I think it is good I come out to tell my side of the story. When his management approached me concerning the shooting of the video, I never charged them. They decided to give me the money for my personal expenses to and from the set. Even on that day, they only gave me half of the amount they quoted initially. AK Difaya personally told me he will be calling me for the set in 3 days.

“I never heard from neither AK nor his management again. I called him several times without success. I finally got in touch with a crew only to be told they were already on set. What crime did I commit to warrant such a run down? AK Difaya is below my standard. Even Sarkodie can not do this to me.”, he said.

Danso Abiam disclosed that he didn’t charge AK Difaya for the track be featured on. He did it for free out of genuine love.

He cautioned AK Difaya to be careful of his utterances in the media space.

  • Al-Qaeda chief in north Africa Abdelmalek Droukdel killed – France

France says it has killed the leader of al-Qaeda in north Africa, Abdelmalek Droukdel, in an operation in Mali.

Defence Minister Florence Parly said Droukdel along with members of his inner circle had been killed in the north of the country on Wednesday.

French forces had also captured a senior Islamic State group commander in Mali in an operation in May, she said.

The “daring operations” had dealt “severe blows to the terrorist groups”, she said.

“Our forces, in co-operation with their partners in the Sahel, will continue to hunt them relentlessly,” she said.

    What is the context?

As head of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Droukdel was in charge of all affiliates in north Africa and also commanded al-Qaeda’s Sahel affiliate, Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM).

The captured Islamic State group commander, Mohamed Mrabat, was a veteran jihadist and had a senior role in the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) group, Ms Parly said. He was caught on 19 May, she added.

On 7 May IS revealed its militants had been engaged in fierce clashes with al-Qaeda in Mali and Burkina Faso. It accused JNIM of attacking its positions, blocking fuel supplies and detaining IS supporters.

ISGS has quickly established a foothold in the Sahel countries after announcing a presence in March last year.

    Who was Abdelmalik Droukdel?

Aged in his late 40s, Droukdel fought against Soviet troops in Afghanistan, and was thought to regard the former leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, as his inspiration.

Under his leadership AQIM carried out numerous deadly attacks, including a 2016 assault on a hotel in the Burkina Faso capital Ouagadougou that left 30 dead and 150 injured.

In 2012 he was sentenced to death by a court in Algeria after being convicted in absentia of murder, membership of a terrorist organisation and attacks using explosives.

The charges related to three bomb attacks in the capital Algiers in April 2007 which killed 22 people and wounded more than 200 others.

    Presentational grey line

    A veteran jihadist

This veteran Algerian jihadist was one of the most notorious commanders in the north Africa-Sahara region, waging violent campaigns first in Algeria then later against French and other forces in Mali.

According to the UN Security Council, which sanctioned him in 2007, Droukdel was an explosives expert who built devices that killed hundreds of civilians in public places. As leader of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) he was instrumental in the kidnap of both local and western nationals in attacks as far apart as Tunisia, Niger and Mali.

He also helped the group expand its area of activities deep into Mali where, according to the French government, he met his end.

Jihadist groups are usually quick to announce a successor to killed or captured leaders but in north Africa there are signs of increasing tension between al-Qaeda and its more recent rival, Islamic State and its affiliates.

    Presentational grey line

What is France doing in the Sahel?

Thousands of French troops have been deployed in Mali since 2013.

France, the former colonial power, became involved after Islamist militants overran parts of the north. With French help, Mali’s army has recaptured the territory, but insecurity continues and violence has spread to neighbouring countries.

More than 5,000 French troops have been serving as part of Operation Barkhane in support of the forces of Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso and Chad.

However they face a growing insurgency by jihadist groups, which have significantly stepped up their attacks in the Sahel countries since last year.

  • When I die and reincarnate Ill choose Nigerian music industry – Zapp Mallet

Award-winning Sound engineer,Emmanuel Zapp Mallet better known as Zapp Mallet, has stated categorically that he would go for Nigerian Music industry, if he was reincarnated.

In an interview with Sandra of RazzNews, the legendary Sound engineer asserted that whoever has chosen the music profession in Ghana has chosen a very noble profession but at a crappy location.

Juxtaposing Ghanaian artists with artists of other countries, Zapp Mallet Stated that while the former are crying over hunger, the latter are rather sponsoring Politicians.

The veteran record producer said that the main source of revenue for the Ghanaian artists is from shows, but artists from Francophone countries in Africa earn a lot from royalties.

According to him ,the coronavirus pandemic has had a serious hit on the pockets of Ghanaian artists, yet their songs are still being played on TV and radio without earning royalties.

He thus expressed his discontentment with the income and revenue derived from the music industry in Ghana–adding that though the Ghanaian music industry has not served them well, they are forging on for posterity sake–so that the future leaders of the industry can possibly make a change.

Zapp Mallet, who has engineered many hit songs including “Ngozi”(Michael Dwamena) and “Puulele”(Terry Bonchaka) expressed regret by emphasizing that the music profession is a noble profession but he just found himself in an erroneous location hence he would obviously prefer to be in the Nigerian Music industry if he died and reincarnated.

  • PPAG centre performs 2,000 abortions in 3 years

The Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) centre in Cape Coast undertakes at least three abortions a day.

Clients to the facility come from as far as Elubo in the Western Region and Kumasi in the Ashanti Region for services.

The Youth Programme officer of the PPAG, Mr Michael Tagoe, said this had been the situation for the past four years.

This translates to about 2,000 aborted pregnancies over the period.

    Abortion

Abortion is illegal in Ghana and is only to be conducted when the pregnancy is the result of rape or defilement or incest and the abortion or miscarriage is requested by the victim or her next of kin of the person if she lacks the capacity to make such request.

Again, one could abort a pregnancy where the continuance of the pregnancy would involve risk to the life of the pregnant woman or injury to her physical or mental health or where there is substantial risk that if the child is born it may suffer from or later develop a serious physical abnormality or disease.

Mr Tagoe said the situation presented a grim picture of the many unplanned pregnancies in the country.

Mr Tagoe was speaking at a workshop to sensitise heads of vocational institutions, apprenticeship and artisanal groups to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), Sexual and Reproductive Health and Gender Equality in Cape Coast last Wednesday.

Sixty participants selected from districts including the Assin South, Upper Denkyira West, Komenda-Edina Eguafo Abrem, Ajumako Enyan Essiam, Ekumfi and Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira districts of the Central Region were trained in the three-session workshop.

It was organised by the National Youth Authority (NYA) in collaboration with the Central Regional Coordinating Council with funding from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

    Many unreported

Mr Tagoe stated that many pregnancy termination cases were unreported with some undergoing dangerous abortions.

He said it was important for particularly women to take responsibility for their own health, including adopting contraceptives to help prevent unplanned pregnancies.

He said it would be unfortunate for a woman with all the available contraceptives to die from unsafe abortions and, therefore, advised the participants to take up roles in educating their communities on responsible sexual behaviour.

    Mutual respect

The Central Regional Director of Gender, Mrs Thywill Kpe, urged the participants to treat the other sex with respect.

She further advised them not to shield perpetrators of sexual and gender-based violence but to report to law enforcement agencies for the right actions to be taken.

“Nobody wishes to be raped and so we must not condemn the rape victims and make them feel as if it was their fault,” she added.

An Investigator with the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, Mr Richard Boadi-Twum, said men were mostly the culprits when it came to sexual offences.

    Divulge information

He explained that sex was done in obscurity and it would take the vigilance of all and a willingness to divulge information for the police to get the perpetrators to face the law.

The Regional Director of the NYA, Mr Emmanuel Sodja Mantey, said the workshop was necessary to help educate the various communities to live planned and enhanced lives.

The Focal Person, Mr David Alan Paintsil, urged parents in particular to be vigilant and ensure that their children were safe during this COVID-19 pandemic period.

He also urged the participants to educate their communities on SGBV to help reduce the number of cases in the region.

  • Election 2020: NDC will regret their actions, they’ll pay dearly for it – Nana Boakye

NPP National Youth Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye, has spelled doom for the opposition National Democratic Congress, stating the party will pay dearly for objecting to the compilation of a new voters’ register.

He believed the NDC will regret their actions during the December polls this year.

According to Nana Boakye, the hierarchy of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is afraid of a low turnout of their members during the EC registration exercise and eventually the general elections because of their poor leadership.

He stated the NDC ordered their members and supporters to abstain from the National Identification Authority’s (NIA) exercise for identity cards called the Ghana card and is, therefore, reaping what they sowed.

He further diagnosed the NDC’s problem saying it has a leadership crisis.

”They have not shown leadership at all. They are going to regret it. They’re going to pay for it and when the day of reckoning comes and when we are done with the elections, and they have been declared losers; they will go back and write a report. They will go round again and go to their branch members and their branch members will remind them that they didn’t allow them to write their names when the NIA began the process of writing names, and that is why we suffered when the mass registration exercise was due and that is how we have lost woefully again. This is poor leadership”, he said on Peace FM’s ”Kokrokoo”.

  • NDC will win the 2020 election according to a poll conducted on twitter

Ghana’s politics is one of the most sensitive areas of our lives. Everything related to politics, political parties, or political figures, can spark outrage on various platforms and even in real life.

As elections approach, it is quite normal for people to set in with their predictions on who deserves the presidential seat for the next term of office. This talk of presidential elections normally settles on either the National Democratic Congress (NDC) or the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Even though there are many other political parties in the country, these two are the people’s favourite.

In the bid to satisfy our curiosity before the real and actual general elections in December 2020, a popular Ghanaian Twitter user and influencer, Kalyjay, conducted an anticipatory virtual election poll in which 34,767 Twitter users took part.

The poll was meant to determine the likely winner for the 2020 elections. The voters’ options were NPP, NDC, any other party, and independent candidate.

At the end of the poll, the final results indicated the following percentages:

    NPP – 39%

    NDC – 46%

    Any other party – 8%

    Independent candidate – 7%

It is true that this is not the total number of voters in Ghana. And perhaps there were even unregistered and underaged people who took part in this poll since Twitter is open to all. This is obviously not meant as an official declaration of whoever will win. This was certainly for fun.

But Ghanaians have shown their stance. And going by this poll, NDC will win the 2020 elections.

Well, now my question to you.

Is this how you see events unfolding? Or do you have an opposing view?

  • Grandmother arrested for selling grandchild for GH¢8,000

A 45-year-old grandmother and two other persons have been arrested for allegedly selling her two-month-old grandchild for GH¢8,000 at Anyaa in the Ga Central municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

Grandma Comfort Okai is said to have taken the baby from her 29-year-old daughter and sold her through a third party to a childless woman.

After taking the baby, the childless woman, in addition to paying GH¢8,000, rented a room for the baby’s mother and her seven children and also bought a new refrigerator for them.

The woman who bought the baby and her agent are in police custody for investigations.

    Burden

Confirming the arrest, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Accra Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mrs Effia Tenge, said on June 3, 2020, the Anyaa Police received a report that a woman had sold her grandchild.

When Madam Okai was arrested, she told the police that she had sold the child to free herself from child care burden, since her daughter already had seven children with different men.

Mrs Tenge said Madam Okai told the police that she had been weighed down by the burden of caring for her daughter’s children, for which reason she took the decision to sell the eighth child.

    Baby buyer found

Madam Okai, according to the police, sold the baby through a 55-year-old woman who concealed the identity of the buyer but rented accommodation for the mother of the baby and her children and also provided a refrigerator for them.

Mrs Tenge said the woman who acted as an agent initially told the police that the baby was with her childless sister in Takoradi in the Western Region and then later took the police to Ashaiman and Odorkor, both in the Greater Accra Region, in search of the buyer.

After taking the police on the fruitless journey, she finally led them to recover the baby from the buyer at Dansoman in Accra.

The buyer and the agent were subsequently arrested to assist with investigations.

  • Check the credit Akufo-Addo accorded Mahama during Tema Interchange commissioning as NDC demanded

Prior to the commissioning of the completed Tema Motorway Interchange today, the NDC held a press conference to emphatically state that the Tema Motorway Interchange was an initiative of the former president, their flag bearer John Dramani Mahama.

According to their statement, Nana Addo must give the credit to John Mahama by involving him in the commissioning of the just completed project.

The National Democratic Congress, went on and accused the NPP administration of taking credit for projects others have initiated. We’re not an exemption especially the Tema Motorway Interchange, Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange amongst others.

However, you will be shocked of the speech pf Nana Addo during the commissioning he said

“We made a plege to the Ghanaian people to expand and improve the road network while closing the missing links in the network. We had to make this plege because we know that the so-called unprecedented infrastructure development of the Mahama administration was a fantasy; existing bin the Green Book and not on the ground,”.

  • Year of Roads: Evaluation for Accra-Tema Motorway expansion completed Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said an evaluation for the expansion of the Accra-Tema Motorway into a three-lane dual carriageway has been completed.

According to him, the project is awaiting approval from the Public Private Partnership Approval Committee of the Ministry of Finance to engage the contractor to commence work.

Speaking at the commissioning of the phase one of the Tema Motorway interchange on Friday June 5 2020, President Akufo said; “Evaluation for the expansion of the AccraTema Motorway into a three-lane dual carriageway with service roads under a Public Private Partnership arrangement has been completed. We are awaiting approval from the Public Private Partnership Approval Committee of the Ministry of Finance to engage the contractor”

“The economic benefits of these and many other trunk roads being undertaken by the Ghana Highways Authority, the Department of Urban Roads and the Department of Feeder Roads will be immense. Government is committed to the successful completion of all the projects, and I urge the Ministry of Roads and Highways to see to their expeditious completion,” President Akufo-Addo added.

The recently commissioned Tema Motorway interchange, which had a June 2020 deadline was financed by the Japanese government with an estimated US$56 million earmarked for the project.

Additionally, President Akufo-Addo had earlier tagged the year 2020 as the “Year of Roads.”

Speaking at a media encounter in December 2019, he flaunted his administration would embark on an aggressive road development across Ghana in 2020, saying “Next year is the year we will adopt as the year of roads.”

The president noted roads are critical in the development of any nation and that the development of the much-touted roads under the previous John Dramani Mahama administration was untrue.

  • Akufo-Addo jabs Mahama -Your so-called infrastructure projects exist only in your ‘green book’

Comprising a two-tier intersection, a tunnel in the East-West direction, four (4) kilometers of improved roads, four (4) pedestrian bridges, one at each approach of the intersection and the presence of several drainage structures.

The Greater Accra regional Executives of the National Democratic Congress held a press conference on 4th June, 2020 and asked the President to acknowledge the efforts made by former President John Mahama for iniatiating the Tema Interchange project.

They further said that, H.E John Dramani Mahama in his last State of the Nation’s Address on 5th January, 2017 at the Parliament House Accra, to end the 6th Parliament in the fourth republic, the former President listed some projects his Government had secured funding for ahead of his exit from office on 7th January, 2017.

The NDC Greater Accra executives said, the Tema Interchange project was part of the listed projects H.E John Mahama stated in his last address and therefore, he needs to be invited to the occasion and credited with the project.

    But, H.E Nana Akuffo Addo in his address during the commissioning of the Phase one of the Tema Interchange project jabbed the NDC and H.E John Mahama instead of Crediting them. He was quoted as saying;

” We made a pledge to the Ghanaian People to expand and improve the road network, while closing the missing links in the network. We had to make this pledge because we knew that the so-called “unprecedented infrastructure development” of the Mahama administration was a fantasy, existing only in the ‘Green Book’, but not on the ground”.

H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Addo said, the funds for the project was secured in March 2017 as Grant aid from the Japanese Government. The negotiation was made and signed in March 2017. Construction commenced in February 2018 and completed in June 2020 with an amount of $56million.

The President further said that, the provision of quality roads improves socio- economic development and thus the Government will ensure the spread of these projects to other areas of the county.
