  • India confirmed coronavirus cases surpass 200,000 peak weeks away

India’s Coronavirus infections crossed 200,000, the health ministry said on Wednesday, and a peak could still be weeks away in the world’s second most populous country.

Cases jumped by 8,909 over the previous day in one of the highest single-day spikes, taking the tally to 2,07,615. Six other nations, from the United States, to Britain and Brazil, have a higher caseload.

Government officials have previously said it could be later this month, or even July, before cases start to fall off.

The death toll from the disease stood at 5,815.

  • Malaysian beauty queen sorry over racist US protest remarks

A Malaysian beauty queen has apologised after her comments that black people should “relax” in response to raging US protests against police racism sparked an online outcry, including condemnation from “Crazy Rich Asians” actor Henry Golding.

The US has been rocked for the past week by once-in-a-generation demonstrations over the killing of George Floyd, an unarmed African-American man, by a white police officer in Minnesota.

But Samantha Katie James, who represented Malaysia in the 2017 Miss Universe pageant in the US, posted on Instagram this week: “To the black people, relax, take it as a challenge, makes you stronger.

“You chose to be born as a ‘colored’ person in America for a reason. To learn a certain lesson.”

Social media lit up with anger following the remarks, with the Malaysian-born English actor Golding also condemning her comments in his Instagram stories.

More than 80,000 people have signed an online petition calling for the 25-year-old to be stripped of her Miss Universe Malaysia crown, which she won in 2017, before competing internationally.

“She misused her platform and social media presence to voice out her blatantly racist and ignorant remarks,” read the petition.

The organisers of the Miss Universe Malaysia contest also slammed the comments as “inappropriate, offensive, unacceptable and hurtful”.

As anger mounted late Tuesday, James posted an apology.

“I do hear you, I’m sorry, I know you’re hurting. I’m not in your shoes to fully understand this,” she said.

Responding to her comment that black people “chose to be black”, she added: “Throughout my journey I have learned that we are more than just this temporary physical body, like an avatar, merely a tiny speck of dust in this vast infinite universe, we tend to overlook that from time to time.

“In our process towards evolution as a human being, on earth. We chose our body, our family, our place of birth, our name and our lessons from the path we take tailor made for us.”

Protests against systemic racism and police brutality have raged across the US since Floyd’s death, with many descending into mayhem as night falls.

  • French anti-racism protests defy police ban

Thousands of people have joined protests in France over the 2016 death of a black man in police custody, defying police orders not to assemble due to coronavirus restrictions.

The death of Adama Traoré, 24, has been likened to the killing of George Floyd in the US, whose death has sparked protests across the country.

Police clashed with protesters in the Paris suburbs on Tuesday.

The Paris police chief has rejected charges of racism against his force.

About 20,000 people defied the order on mass gatherings to join the protest. Initially peaceful, the march turned violent, with stones thrown at police and tear gas fired back.

There were also demonstrations in other cities, including Marseille, Lyon and Lille. Some of the demonstrators carried Black Lives Matter placards – the movement that began in the US and has spread internationally.

Mr Traoré died in a police station after being apprehended by officers in the Paris suburbs and losing consciousness in their vehicle.

One of the officers told investigators that he and two colleagues pinned down Mr Traoré using their bodyweight.

Official reports indicate he died of heart failure, possibly due to an underlying health condition. Last Thursday, the officers who detained Mr Traoré were exonerated by a police investigation.

Following his death in 2016, violent protests were seen in Paris for several days.

His case has become a rallying cry against police brutality in France, which young ethnic minority communities say targets them.

On Tuesday campaigners defied authorities, after their request for permission to protest was denied by police.

Public gatherings are limited to 10 people to control the spread of coronavirus.

Video showed police firing tear gas at crowds in Paris, as well as several fires and blocked roads.

“Today we are not just talking about the fight of the Traoré family. It is the fight for everyone. When we fight for George Floyd, we fight for Adama Traoré,” his sister, Assa, told the protest, according to AFP.

Paris police chief Didier Lallement defended his force against allegations of brutality and racism.

In a letter to police officers, he said he sympathised with the “pain” they must feel “faced with accusations of violence and racism, repeated endlessly by social networks and certain activist groups”.

Greg Crockett was sitting in the passenger seat of his grandfather’s van when he saw that – in the midst of rapidly escalating protests over the death of an unarmed black man named George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer – an auto parts store near his old neighbourhood was on fire.

Although he moved away from Minnesota almost two years ago, Crockett told his grandfather he needed to go. In response, his grandfather, a retired Marine, quoted Che Guevara.

Parliament has accused Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta of starving the institution of funds for its activities.

According to the Leadership of Parliament, allocations to the House approved in the budget are constantly not released thus making the work of the institution near impossible.

  • I feel pity for Akufo-Addo Kwesi Pratt

The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr who was speaking on Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, has said it is not easy to be a Head of State of any country especially in an era where the world is battling the coronavirus pandemic.

According to him, it will be an act of wickedness not to feel sympathy for President Akufo-Addo amidst all the struggles of the economy.

“I feel pity for the President (Akufo-Addo) . . .” Kwesi Pratt Jnr stated.

“In this current dispensation; every President should be pitied . . . in Ghana anyone who doesn’t sympathize with the President in this current state is wicked . . . In the first place, the economy is not doing so well and to carry this burden as President of Ghana; it is huge and so I feel pity for the President,” he averred.

    Number of Testing

On the other hand, Kwesi Pratt Jnr has asked authorities to up their game in the number of tests being conducted.

According to him, other countries are doing well with testing so there is a need to do more.

As at Sunday 31st May, 218, 425 tests have been conducted according to the Ghana Health Service.

Restrictions eased, gatherings should not be more than 100 people

President Akufo-Addo has introduced a phased approach of easing of restrictions especially in public gatherings and school attendance.

In his 10th address to the nation on measures being taken against the spread of COVID-19 he said effective 5th June, churches and mosques can start meeting with a maximum congregation of 100 and the mandatory wearing of nose mask.

“In addition to mandatory wearing of masks, a register of names and contact details of all worshippers must be provided; maximum duration of one hour per service,” he said.

  • George Floyd death: Archbishop attacks Trump as US unrest continues

Washington’s Catholic Archbishop strongly criticised President Donald Trump’s visit to a shrine as civil unrest continues in the US over the death of a black man in police custody.

The visit “misused” and “manipulated” the Saint John Paul II National Shrine, Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory said, adding that he found it “baffling and reprehensible”.

Anger over the killing of George Floyd as well as systemic injustice are fuelling protests, film-maker Spike Lee told the BBC in an interview.

On Monday Mr Trump threatened to send in the military to quell disturbances, vowing to “dominate the streets.”

Peaceful and violent protests sparked by the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis on 25 May continued overnight.

The president said that he would deploy the army if cities and states failed to control the protests.

But on Tuesday at least one city mayor rejected the use of National Guard and military forces.

Presidential candidate Joe Biden criticized Mr Trump for using the crisis to appeal to his supporters, saying he was “serving the passions of his base”.

Dozens of people have been injured as authorities used tear gas and force to disperse protests which have swept more than 75 cities.

On Tuesday the Las Vegas sheriff said an officer died in a shooting after police attempted to disperse a crowd, and four officers were injured on Monday in St Louis, Missouri.

  • Coronavirus: Risk of death is higher for ethnic minorities

People from ethnic minorities are at a higher risk of dying from coronavirus, a report by Public Health England says.

It shows age remains the biggest risk factor, while being male is another.

The impact of Covid-19 is also “disproportionate” for other Asian, Caribbean and black ethnicities. But it remains unclear why.

The health secretary said the “troubling” report was “timely” because “right across the world people are angry about racial injustice”.

On Monday night, the Department of Health and Social Care denied reports the delay was down to official concerns of potential civil unrest linked to global anger over the death of African-American George Floyd.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock told the House of Commons the public was “understandably angry about injustices” and that he felt a “deep responsibility because this pandemic has exposed huge disparities in the health of our nation”.

“Black lives matter, as do those of the poorest areas of our country which have worse health outcomes and we need to make sure all of these considerations are taken into account, and action is taken to level-up the health outcomes of people across this country,” he said.

Speaking at the daily coronavirus briefing in Downing Street, Mr Hancock said “much more work” needed to be done to understand “what’s driving these disparities”.

“We are absolutely determined to get to the bottom of this and find ways of closing this gap,” he said, adding that he has asked equalities minister Kemi Badenoch to continue working on the issue alongside Public Health England (PHE).

‘I can’t change my colour’ The BBC’s Rianna Croxford pressed Mr Hancock on whether there were any specific recommendations for people from ethnic minority backgrounds.

He said everyone in “the different high risk categories” highlighted in the report should follow social distancing guidelines “very stringently”.

Prof John Newton said although the virus was having a worse impact on black and minority ethnic people, “that is not necessarily because of their ethnicity” and could instead be related to their job, for example.

He said the report’s findings needed to be “widely discussed before deciding exactly what needs to be done”.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said “lives depend on” finding out why the virus disproportionately impacts black and minority ethnic people, and what actions the government was taking to stop it.

Davida Wilkins, a 38-year-old district nurse in the West Midlands, told the BBC she felt “even more anxious” about doing her job following the report’s publication.

She said she felt “obligated” to continue her front-line role but added she cannot minimise the risks posed to her by the virus because “it’s the colour that I am and I can’t change it”.

  • George Floyd death: Trump threatens to send in army to end unrest

President Donald Trump has threatened to send in the military to quell growing civil unrest in the US over the death of a black man in police custody.

He said if cities and states failed to control the protests and “defend their residents” he would deploy the army and “quickly solve the problem for them”.

Protests over the death of George Floyd have escalated over the past week.

Presidential candidate Joe Biden criticised Mr Trump on Tuesday for “serving the passions of his base”.

“We’re not going to allow any president to quiet our voice,” the Democrat said, referencing the US constitution which guarantees protestors’ freedom to assemble.

On Tuesday the Las Vegas sheriff said an officer died in a shooting after police attempted to disperse a crowd.

Dozens of people have been injured as authorities used tear gas and force to disperse protests which have swept more than 75 cities.

Four officers meanwhile were shot and injured on Monday night during unrest in St Louis, Missouri.

The protests began after a video showed Mr Floyd, 46, being arrested in Minneapolis on 25 May and a white police officer continuing to kneel on his neck even after he pleaded that he could not breathe.

The officer, Derek Chauvin, has been charged with third-degree murder and will appear in court next week. Three other police officers have been fired.

The Floyd case has reignited deep-seated anger over police killings of black Americans and racism. It follows the high-profile cases of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri; Eric Garner in New York; and others that have driven the Black Lives Matter movement.

For many, the outrage also reflects years of frustration over socio-economic inequality and discrimination, not least in Minneapolis itself.

    What did Trump say?

The president delivered a brief address from the White House Rose Garden, amid the sound of a nearby protest being dispersed.

Mr Trump said “all Americans were rightly sickened and revolted by the brutal death of George Floyd” but said his memory must not be “drowned out by an angry mob”.

He described the scenes of looting and violence in the capital on Sunday as “a total disgrace” before pledging to bolster the city’s defences.

“I’m dispatching thousands and thousands of heavily armed soldiers, military personnel and law enforcement officers to stop the rioting, looting, vandalism, assaults and the wanton destruction of property,” he said.

He called on cities and states to deploy the National Guard, the reserve military force that can be called on to intervene in domestic emergencies, “in sufficient numbers that we dominate the streets”. About 16,000 troops have been deployed so far.

Mr Trump added: “If a city or state refuses to take the actions that are necessary… then I’ll deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them.”

Can he do that? In order to take that step, the president would have to invoke the Insurrection Act, which in some circumstances first requires a request from state governors for him to do so.

This law was last invoked in 1992 during riots in Los Angeles following the acquittal of four police officers charged with assaulting black motorist Rodney King.

Mr Trump’s warning was met with swift criticism from senior Democrats. Joe Biden, the party’s presumptive presidential candidate, said Mr Trump “[was] using the American military against the American people”.

Following his address, Mr Trump walked to a nearby church which had been damaged by protesters on Sunday night. He and a number of aides stood at the steps of the building as Mr Trump held up a Bible in front of the gathered press.

  • Iranian scientist acquitted of stealing research deported by US

An Iranian scientist detained in the United States has left the country and is on his way back to Iran, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has said.

Sirous Asgari, a materials science professor from Tehran, was charged in 2016 with trying to trade secrets research from an American university.

He was acquitted by a federal court in November.

It was reported last month that Mr Asgari would be deported once he had recovered from a Covid-19 infection.

The US and Iran have denied that he is part of a prisoner swap.

In a post on Instagram on Tuesday morning, Mr Zarif welcomed what he described as the “good news” of Mr Asgari’s return on a flight to Iran, but accused the US of holding “hostage” several other Iranian scientists.

The 59-year-old professor at Sharif University of Technology was accused by US prosecutors of stealing trade secrets from a research project being carried out by Case Western Reserve University in Ohio for the US Navy.

He denied the charge and a judge eventually threw out the prosecution’s case.

His return to Iran led to speculation that he could be part of another prisoner swap.

At least six US citizens are currently imprisoned in Iran or out on bail. They include US Navy veteran Michael White, who was temporarily released from prison in March on medical grounds and is in the care of the Swiss embassy in Tehran.

In response to Mr Zarif’s Instagram post, Acting US Deputy Homeland Security Secretary Ken Cuccinelli tweeted that Mr Asgari and Mr White’s cases had “never been related”.

“We have been trying to deport Asghari since last year, being stalled every step of the way by the Iranian government. We wish Iran was so enthusiastic to get its illegal nationals back as they would have us all believe…”

He added: “… so how about the Iranians take the other 10 currently in custody with removal orders? You haven’t heard much about that, have you? If #Zarif wasn’t blowing smoke, they would’ve already made arrangements for these other 10. But instead, they stall.”

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi also said talk of a swap was “groundless”, noting that Mr Asgari was “released on the basis of being acquitted”.

In December, the US and Iran conducted a prisoner swap in a rare sign of co-operation. Chinese-American researcher Xiyue Wang and Iranian scientist Massoud Soleimani were freed.

Relations between the US and Iran have become increasingly hostile since 2018, when President Donald Trump abandoned the Iran nuclear deal.

Earlier this year, the US assassinated top Iranian commander Gen Qasem Soleimani in a drone strike in Iraq. Iran retaliated by launching ballistic missiles at Iraqi military bases hosting US forces.

  • Spain eyes new tax to rubbish plastic packaging

The Spanish government on Tuesday proposed new legislation on rubbish that seeks to dramatically reduce single-use plastic packaging, notably by taxing it.

The move specifically aims to reduce the plastic cups and bottles used in the fast food and take-away sectors.

“If we add up all the waste generated in a year in Spain… it would be enough to fill up the Santiago Bernabeu stadium 2,900 times,” said Environment Minister Teresa Ribera of Real Madrid’s 80,000-seat stadium in the Spanish capital.

“And just the plastic packaging from our homes alone would fill up 45 such stadiums,” she added, after the cabinet meeting at which ministers approved an extensive draft law on waste and soil contaminants to comply with European directives.

In summer 2021, certain products will be banned, such as cotton buds, plastic straws and cutlery.

A special tax on plastic packaging will be brought in by January 2023, meaning consumers will pay a little more for any take-away that includes a plastic container or cup, which will be itemised on the bill.

“The special tax on single-use plastic containers will be indirect and will impact the manufacture, import or acquisition within the European Union of non-reusable plastic containers for use within the Spanish market,” a ministry statement said.

“This is a similar tax to that being implemented in other neighbouring countries such as the United Kingdom or Italy.”

In imposing a tax of 0.45 euros per kilogramme (2.2 pounds) of packaging, the government hopes to bring 724 million euros per year into the state coffers.

  • It’s not true, they haven’t learnt any lessons – A Plus fires NDC

After series of attacks directed at the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), founder of The People’s Project (TPP), Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has reopened his fire on the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

A Plus says the behaviour of the NDC communication machinery contradicts the ‘we have learnt our lessons’ assertion made by the party leadership after losing the 2016 elections.

His comment comes after the NDC Communication Chief, Sammy Gyamfi, made politics with the death of George Floyd. In a Tuesday’s tweet, Mr. Gyamfi posted a cartoon of the late African-American being trangulated by President Akufo-Addo and EC boss, Jean Mensa, depicting that Ghanaians are being suffocated to death with the impending new voters’ register.

Reacting to this on Facebook, A Plus said the NDC will do better if the party’s communication is rather outsourced to an advertising company or a blogging platform.

“The NDC must outsource their communications to an advertising company or bloggers like GhKwaku, Nkonkonsa and ZionFelix. I’m sure they will do better”, he fired.

According to him, the NDC failed in 2016 after it tried to score cheap political points with the then NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo drinking a popular Ghanaian juice, kalyppo, an indication of a weaker communication team.

“In 2016 they scored an own goal when they attempted to mock Nana with Kalypo”, said Kwame A Plus.

He said people should not take the NDC serious since they have not genuinely learnt any lessons.

“Not long ago they told us to vote for them to come back to power because they have “learnt their lesson.” Don’t mind them. It is not true. They have not leant whuuutey!!!”, his post added.

  • Adolf Hitler house to be ‘neutralised’, Austria says

Austria has unveiled plans to “neutralise” the building where Nazi German dictator Adolf Hitler was born, by turning it into a police station.

The government bought the building under a compulsory purchase order in 2016 after a lengthy dispute.

Officials announced it would be turned into a police station in November.

Now an Austrian architecture firm will carry out the changes designed to stop the site, in Braunau on the border with Germany, attracting neo-Nazis.

“A new chapter will be opened for the future from the birth house of a dictator and mass murderer,” Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer told reporters on Tuesday.

The winning company – Marte.Marte, picked from among 12 candidates – submitted a plan which will cosmetically change the façade of the building and give it a new roof. Work is expected to be completed by 2023 and will cost about €5m ($5.6m; £4.5m).

“The neutralisation of this whole location was ultimately at the heart of this result,” interior ministry official Hermann Feiner told reporters.

Little marks out the house to suggest it is where the Nazi leader was born. A rock outside which reads “Fascism never again” is to be moved to a museum in the capital Vienna. A local historian however told the BBC that it was very important that the stone should stay in Braunau.

The genocidal dictator himself barely spent time at the property. He was born in an apartment in the 17th Century building in 1889, but his family left a few weeks later for another address in the area, and left the town permanently when Hitler turned three.

Neo-Nazis have however travelled to the site, and authorities want to ensure it does not attract others in the future.

Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany in 1938, and for decades presented itself as one of the first victims of the regime.

But many at the time welcomed the move, known as the Anschluss or connection, and Austria has begun to speak about its own complicity in Nazi crimes.

The Bole Magistrate Court presided over by His Worship Andrews Cudjoe has remanded Yikatey Somatey, a 60 year old farmer from Gando in the Sawla Tuna Kalba District of the Savannah region into prison custody for allegedly killing his wife.

The accused person has been charged with murder and will reappear in court on July 15.

It will be recalled that the Sawla Tuna Kalba Police Command arrested a 60 year old man who allegedly killed his wife, Bora Bonbiatey, 57, at Gando near Nyanyema , a suburb of Tuna in the Savannah Region.

The suspect, Yikatey Somatey, had accused his wife of cheating with another man in the community.

DGN Online gathered that the suspect lured his wife to a bush to perform some family rituals and in the process poured pepper into her eyes.

He then used a sharp cutlass to inflect multiple wounds on her until she died.

He then disposed off the body at a nearby bush and absconded.

However, luck eluded him when he was arrested by the police.

The Sawla District Police Commander, ASP Degraft Armah Adjei, who confirmed the incident to journalists said the uncle of the deceased reported to the police station accusing the suspect of killing his niece.

According to him, the police moved to the scene and found the deceased in a pool of blood with multiple cuts on her head and right eye.

  • Its unfair Coronavirus contact tracers write to Akufo-Addo over slashed allowance

Covid-19 contact tracers have revealed that they are now receiving GhC70 as daily allowance instead of the announced GhC150.

“Mr President, on Sunday, the 5th of April 2020, you made a public announcement that Contact Tracers across the country would be given a Ghc150 daily allowance for their efforts in the fight against Covid-19. This announcement was very timely and welcoming since by then none of us knew how much we were getting even after working for days.

“However, for the entire month of May, the money was not paid until on the 1st of June when we were asked to come the next day for our monies. We proceeded to our accountants for the money the next day only to be informed that, we are taking Ghc70 per day and not the announced Ghc150 per day,” a part of the letter reads.

They have therefore written an open letter to President Akufo-Addo to address their concern.

Below is the full open letter:

    Good day sir,

Accept a warm felicitation from us.

We pray our letter finds you in a good health condition as you lead your beloved country in this fight against an invisible enemy.

Mr President, on Sunday, the 5th of April 2020, you made a public announcement that Contact Tracers across the country would be given a Ghc150 daily allowance for their efforts in the fight against Covid-19. This announcement was very timely and welcoming since by then none of us knew how much we were getting even after working for days.

Mr. President, for the month of April, the money was paid as you announced and we thank you for that.

However, for the entire month of May, the money was not paid until on the 1st of June when we were asked to come the next day for our monies. We proceeded to our accountants for the money the next day only to be informed that, we are taking Ghc70 per day and not the announced Ghc150 per day.

So Mr. President, we would like to humbly enquire whether your office has reviewed the amount or some entities within the region want to “cheat” us.

Mr. President, when the announcement for the recruitment of health professionals to work as Contact Tracers was made, almost everyone was afraid to partake. A few of us showed up for the orientation and training, and a few among those who showed for the training actually showed up for work for fear of contracting the virus. But some of us against all odds sacrificed and contributed our quota in this fight. We faced some stigmatisations and distancing from even family members due to fear. People feared getting close to us just because of the work we do. But that did not deter us in fighting to make Ghana safe again.

The successes chalked in the fight would not have been possible without our tireless efforts in Tracing and Testing some 153,056 people and recording 4956 positives. This could not have been possible without us.

Mr. President, it is unfair for us to work all week including Saturdays and Sundays only for us to be denied what is due us. It is unfair sir.

So we call on your esteemed office to issue a statement, possibly through the daily Ministerial Press Briefings to shed some light on this issue.

    Thank you Mr. President

    Convener

Coalition of Contact Tracers, Ashanti Region.

  • George Floyd death: TV, radio and music industries mark ‘Blackout Tuesday’

Radio stations and TV channels have changed their programmes to mark “Blackout Tuesday”, reflecting on George Floyd’s death in police custody.

BBC Radio 1Xtra is hosting a series of discussions and debates in support of the black community, with song choices that reflect black pride and identity.

Many record labels and music stars have stopped work to observe the initiative.

MTV will go silent for eight minutes – the length of time a white police officer knelt on Mr Floyd’s neck.

The gesture will be replicated on other channels including VH1 and Comedy Central, while 4 Music will pause its output once an hour throughout the day.

There are also moments of reflection on BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2, while commercial radio stations including Kiss, Magic and Absolute Radio are observing a social media blackout “to show that racism of any kind cannot be tolerated”.

ITV daytime show This Morning briefly went dark, showing a black screen with the words “Black Lives Matter”.

Presenter Alison Hammond later said Mr Floyd’s death “hurt me to the pit of my stomach”.

“Firstly, I am a mother of a 15-year-old black boy,” she said. “When I saw that image of George Floyd, I saw my brothers, I saw my father and I saw my son, I saw everybody’s son and I was disgusted to my core.

“If black lives mattered, we wouldn’t be in this situation.”

Apple Music’s Zane Lowe tweeted that he would skip Tuesday’s edition of his radio show, saying he stood “united with his black and brown friends and colleagues”.

“I will not be on radio. I will be taking part in Blackout Tuesday, listening, learning and looking for solutions to fight racial inequality,” the DJ added.

On Radio 1, Clara Amfo gave a powerful speech about the effects of racism and the recent events on her mental health.

The broadcaster said Mr Floyd’s death reinforced a feeling among black people “that people want our culture, but they do not want us”.

Music companies and musicians around the world adopted Tuesday as a day of reflection and protest in the wake of Mr Floyd’s death last week in Minneapolis.

Katy Perry posted a plain black square to her Instagram account with the caption: “I hope that #BlackoutTuesday gives us all (especially in the music industry) an opportunity to take what we’re learning and put it into action on Wednesday, and every day going forward.”

Rihanna said her Fenty beauty label would not conduct any business on Tuesday.

Apple’s iTunes store and its streaming service Apple Music replaced their usual carousels of new music and playlists with a slide stating: “This moment calls upon us all to speak and act against racism and injustice of all kinds.”

Listeners were then directed to a livestream of the Beats 1 radio station, where the music is focusing on themes of black empowerment and civil rights. (All of the service’s usual tracks were still available through the search function, however.)

Spotify, meanwhile, blacked out the artwork for several of its most prominent playlists, including Today’s Hits and Rap Caviar.

The company also inserted a silence of eight minutes and 46 seconds into selected podcasts and playlists “as a solemn acknowledgement for the length of time that George Floyd was suffocated”.

    ‘Provoking change’
The movement began last Friday, when a number of companies and artists shared a statement posted under the hashtag #TheShowMustBePaused, calling for “a day to disconnect from work and reconnect with our community” and “an urgent step of action to provoke accountability and change”.

The initiative was started by Atlantic Records marketing executives Brianna Agyemang and Jamila Thomas, and spread by hundreds of artists including Billie Eilish, Britney Spears, the Rolling Stones, Radiohead, producer Quincy Jones and Eminem.

“Tuesday, June 2nd is meant to intentionally disrupt the work week,” wrote Agyemang and Thomas.

“The music industry is a multi-billion dollar industry. An industry that has profited predominantly from Black art. Our mission is to hold the industry at large, including major corporations + their partners who benefit from the efforts, struggles and successes of black people accountable.”

They have subsequently posted several calls to action, including a reading list called Anti-Racism Resources and links to community action groups.

All three major record labels – Universal, Sony and Warner Music, whose combined annual revenues exceed $16bn (£12.75bn) – signed up to the initiative, as did many independent labels, the Glastonbury Festival and event organisers Live Nation.

Interscope Records also vowed to stop releasing new music for a week, while many others donated money to the George Floyd Memorial Fund.

But some people in the music industry criticised the initiative’s lack of clarity and direction, dismissing it as “virtue signalling”.

“I love you all, but this music industry shutdown thing feels tone deaf to me,” wrote indie musician Bon Iver on Twitter, although he later apologised for “calling out people when they are on the same side as you”.

Indie labels Father/Daughter Records and Don Giovanni also said they did not plan to observe the blackout.

“If BLM [Blacks Lives Matter] calls for the music industry to take action, we will,” wrote the latter on its Twitter page. “But I have no interest in supporting major label record executive white guilt day.”

However, Agyemang and Thomas have stressed the blackout is just the beginning of a larger campaign.

“This is not just a 24-hour initiative,” they wrote. “We are and will be in this fight for the long haul. A plan of action will be announced.”

  • Man defiles 8-year-old in maize farm

A 43-year-old man, Ibrahim Adamu has defiled an eight-year-old girl at a maize farm at Duta, a suburb of Aflao in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.

The incident which is reported to have occurred about a week ago on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 has infuriated residents who said the act is becoming one too many.

Gabriel Ayitey, the Assembly member of the Duta Electoral area told the media that residents are not only worried by the incident but also angry that such criminal acts continue to jeopardise the lives of young girls in the area.

He alleged that this latest defilement incident is the third this year. In the two previous cases, the culprits for some reason were not prosecuted. Ayitey said his community members suspect there may be some underhand dealings that afford the perpetuators an opportunity to pay their way out of prosecution.

He was hopeful that this incident will take a different turn so that it deters other perpetuators from repeating the life destroying act.

The Public Affairs Officer of the Volta Regional Police Command, Cpl. Prince Dogbatse who confirmed the defilement incident narrated that on that day, the victim was playing with her friends when the accused person, Ibrahim Adamu called her.

He held the hand of the poor girl and took her to a nearby maize farm, undressed her and had sexual intercourse with her.

The girl later reported the incident to the father and on Saturday, May 30, 2020 the suspect who has been identified as a citizen of Niger was arrested.

Medical form was issued to the family to send to the hospital for the victim to be assessed. The medical report proved that indeed the girl had been penetrated.

Suspect, Ibrahim Adamu was subsequently arraigned before the Dzodze Magistrate Court on Monday June 1, 2020 where the case was adjourned to Wednesday June 17, 2020.

  • Were optimistic cabinet will approve proposal for tourism GTA

Director in Charge of Department of Quality and Assurance, Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Mr Alex Boakye, has said a proposal on how the tourism sector can be supported in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic has been submitted to cabinet.

He said on the Travel Pass show on 3 92.7FM Sunday, May 31 that the stakeholders in the tourism sector are optimistic that the proposal will be accepted and approved by government.

He explained that although the government has made available GHS1billion stimulus there is a need to adopt a special allocation for the tourism sector due to the role that sector play in the economy.

“We have presented [the proposal] to government,” he said adding that: “We are hopeful that the proposal for the tourism sector will be accepted.”

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has launched a One billion Ghana Cedi stimulus package to provide relief to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), hard-hit by the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The COVID-19 Alleviation Programme (CAP) Business Support Scheme, to be administered by the National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI) is to help lessen the effects of the economic crisis, like no other, caused by the pandemic.

It would provide additional capital for business expansion to meet the demand for respiratory illness-related goods and services.

At a ceremony at the Jubilee House, President Akufo-Addo said the flu-like virus had exacted a huge toll on world economies, including that of Ghana reduced productivity, job losses and steep decline of revenue for government, businesses, households and individuals.

“We are determined to protect as many jobs as possible and to help as many businesses as possible get back on their feet.”

Out of the amount earmarked for the scheme, GH¢600 million would be disbursed as loans to MSMEs with a one-year moratorium and a two-year payment period with three per cent interest.

Additionally, selected banks that would participate in the programme would provide a negotiated counterpart funding to the tune of GH¢400 million to be disbursed under the scheme President Akufo-Addo said.

  • Replace EC commissioners with an interim committee Brogya Gyamfi

Member of the National Communications team of the National Democratic Congress, Brogya Gyamfi has called on the Interparty Advisory Committee (IPAC) to join forces to push for the removal of the heads of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana.

According to him, peace and sanity can only prevail in the electoral process of Ghana only if EC Chair, Jean Mensah, and her deputies are removed from office.

“We should remove Jean Mensa and the current EC team from the office, and set up an interim committee with members of all the political parties in the country. This is the only way for peace and to ensure effectiveness in the electoral process.” He told Happy FM.

In his opinion, the sitting heads of the EC have been ineffective and have to be sacked as is a norm in this country for public office holders to be relieved of their duties when they cannot execute their roles effectively.

Citing the lapses in the work of the EC over the years, the politician noted that the law requires the EC to carry out a by-election after 90 days of the death of a sitting member of parliament (MP). “The Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election came off after the 90 days as stipulated by the constitution.”

Furthering his agenda, he added that “How can they invite people to a meeting which starts at 10 am but their letter states 10 pm. Notwithstanding, even the agendas of meetings are not the same as agendas stated in their letters.”

To him, this is not a hallmark of good leadership and with such clumsy people at the centre of affairs at the electoral commission, “how can they be trusted to compile something as important as a new voters register.”

“We should fire these batch of incompetent commissioners and get an interim committee to oversee the affairs of the EC hence, the 2020 general elections. They are trying to cause problems for us and the only way to stop that is to replace them” he reiterated.

  • George Floyd death: Spike Lee says protesters were ‘not just born angry’

Film-maker Spike Lee has said people in the US are angry because they “live every day in this world where the system is not set up for you to win”.

The Oscar-winner said the reasons for the current unrest included the deaths of black people like George Floyd but also wider injustices and inequalities.

“It’s not like you’re just born angry,” he told BBC arts editor Will Gompertz.

Lee also said President Trump’s response showed that “he’s a gangster, he’s trying to be a dictator”.

Mr Trump has threatened to send in the military to quell growing civil unrest across the US.

On Monday, the president walked from the White House to a nearby fire-damaged church to pose with a Bible, after demonstrators were cleared from his path.

Lee, whose new Netflix film Da 5 Bloods follows a group of African-American war veterans, said: “I was watching this last night with my family and we were all screaming in disbelief that this thing was staged.

“This show of force – gassing, beating innocent, peaceful bystanders so you could clear the street so you could take a walk to the church. It was ridiculous.

He added: “The Bible did not look comfortable in his hand, and he didn’t look comfortable holding the Bible either. I have never seen something like that before in my life, particularly with a world leader.”

In his speech before walking to the church, Mr Trump said: “I am your president of law and order and an ally of all peaceful protesters.”

Many US cities have seen demonstrations and unrest since the death of 46-year-old Mr Floyd in Minneapolis on 25 May, when a white police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes.

On Sunday, Lee released a short film combining footage of Mr Floyd and Eric Garner, who was killed while being arrested in 2014, with a scene from his 1989 film Do the Right Thing in which the character Radio Raheem is murdered.

A state grand jury declined to press criminal charges against the officer involved in Mr Garner’s death.

“Why are people angry?” Lee said on Tuesday. “People are angry because black people are being killed left and right, cops walked away free.

“Black and brown people are angry at the disparity between the haves and have-nots – education, drinking dirty water, racism.

“People are angry for a reason. It’s not like you’re just born angry. You’re angry because you live every day in this world where the system is not set up for you to win.

“The life expectancy… There are just so many things that one could make a list of [them] forever – that’s where the anger’s from.

“It’s a stupid analogy, but if you leave the pot on the stove, the water boils.”

Social inequalities have been particularly evident during the coronavirus pandemic, he said, with people from minorities more likely to die after contracting the disease.

“It’s the black and brown people who had to go to work, front-liners of all aspects, they kept this [country] going,” he said.

And racism is far from being unique to the US, he added.

“Racism is all over the world. This was a global pandemic before corona.

“I’m a very spiritual person and I don’t think that’s a coincidence that these two things are happening at the same time.”

  • Court remands cargo agent over dud cheques

The Kaneshie District Court has remanded into police custody a 50-year-old cargo agent who lodged at a hotel from January 11, to May 21, and later issued dud cheques to cover his bills.

Michael A. Gyasi denied issuing the two dud cheques of the Access Bank.

He will be brought back to the Court on June 24.

Police Inspector John Baidoo told the Court presided over by Rosemond Dodoa Agyiri that Mr Kofi Agyare, a receptionist of the AMPAQX Grand Hotel is the complainant.

He said the accused, a cargo agent at the Tema Harbour on January 11 this year, went and lodged at the hotel located at Asylum Down in Accra.

Inspector Baidoo said the daily charge was ¢150 and his bill accrued to ¢19,000 as at May 21.

He said Gyasi then paid ¢8,350 and afterwards issued two separate cheques of ¢1,700 and ¢2,000 for the outstanding balance but the cheques were dishonoured when presented at the bank.

The Prosecution said this led to his arrest and after he was cautioned, he was arraigned.

  • George Floyd death: Trump’s church visit shocks religious leaders

Last night he held a Bible in front of St John’s Episcopal Church, just across the road from the White House. Today, he’ll visit the Shrine to St John Paul II, also in Washington DC.

But US President Donald Trump’s signalling of religious affiliation has not been welcomed by a range of clerics as the nation struggles to manage the twin challenges of a pandemic and widespread political protest.

The Episcopal Bishop of Washington, the Right Reverend Mariann Budde, said: “The president just used a Bible, the most sacred text of the Judeo-Christian tradition, and one of the churches of my diocese, without permission, as a backdrop for a message antithetical to the teachings of Jesus.”

James Martin, a Jesuit priest and consultant to the Vatican’s communications department, tweeted: “Let me be clear. This is revolting. The Bible is not a prop. A church is not a photo op. Religion is not a political tool. God is not your plaything.”

Rabbi Jack Moline, President of the Interfaith Alliance, said: “Seeing President Trump standing in front of St John’s Episcopal Church while holding a Bible in response to calls for racial justice – right after using military force to clear peaceful protesters – is one of the most flagrant misuses of religion that I have ever seen.”

President Trump does not belong to a particular congregation, only occasionally attends a service and has said many times that he does not like to ask God for forgiveness.

But while he may not consider church essential to his personal life, it may yet hold the keys to his political future.

In 2016, Mr Trump won 81% of white evangelical votes and exit polls found that white Catholics supported him over Hillary Clinton by 60% to 37%.

Mr Trump’s status, as the champion of evangelical and conservative voters, can seem peculiar given his use of divisive rhetoric, his three marriages, accusations of sexual assault by dozens of women, the hush-money paid to a pornographic film actress, and the record of false statements made during his presidency – more than 18,000 according to the Poynter Institute’s Politifact website.

But he has sealed a powerful bond with religious voters by embracing their political priorities and appointing two Supreme Court justices – Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch – and federal judges with their support.

This may explain why – though an irregular congregant himself – the president has repeatedly demanded the reopening of churches, saying, on 22 May, “If they don’t do it, I will override the governors.”

Religious conservatives appear to be the most solid core of Mr Trump’s voter base, despite political unrest and the vast number of deaths from Covid-19.

According to the latest Pew Research Poll, 75% of white evangelical Protestants say he’s doing a good job in handling the pandemic – down 6 percentage points from six weeks before.

But while one voting bloc remains faithful, the country at large is deeply divided. According to analysis by the website FiveThirtyEight, which collates all polling data, 43% of Americans agree with the president’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, while 53.4% disapprove.

Several religious leaders are hoping that Trump’s visit to the shrine may encourage him to reflect on the words of then Pope John Paul II, delivered to the United Nations in 1995.

“The answer to the fear which darkens human existence at the end of the 20th Century,” he said, “is the common effort to build the civilization of love.”

Gospel diva, Ohemaa Mercy has shockingly revealed that there was a point in time that she wanted to divorce her husband over an expensive joke he made.

Speaking on Power FM, the award-winning musician said her husband, Isaac Twum-Ampofo nearly became a catalyst for their divorce after he passed good compliments about her costumier

‘My husband jokingly passed that comment but I did take not it lightly at all. I was hurt and thought about leaving,’ she said.

Ohemaa Mercy added that upon sober reflection, she decided to abort that idea as it was a recipe for a disaster.

“Prayer answers everything and I believe this is what has helped us so far. Although we fight we are able to resolve our differences,” she said. She admitted that her husband had been very supportive. “My husband is my pillar and has been supportive. I thank God I met him and I love him dearly,” she said.

  • French clubs call for fans to be allowed back to games next season

Struggling French football clubs have called for fans to be allowed into matches in time for the start of next season and urged the country’s government to provide financial help after the early end to this campaign due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The season was declared over early at the end of April, at the height of the pandemic and with 10 rounds of matches unplayed, after Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced that football could not restart. Paris Saint-Germain were named Ligue 1 champions.

With leagues in neighbouring countries having since restarted or set to return to action soon, various voices in the French game have criticised the decision to end the season early rather than waiting for the health crisis to subside.

France has been one of the worst-hit countries in the world by the pandemic, with almost 29,000 deaths, but the situation has improved and a strict lockdown has been steadily eased in recent weeks.

However, in a joint statement on Tuesday, the unions of clubs in the top two divisions admitted that the league and French Football Federation were left with “no other choice” but to bring a premature end to the season following the government’s announcement.

“But rather than looking in the rear-view mirror, we prefer to look forward,” the statement added.

They said they were working to put in place a “health protocol” and on a return to collective team training while also hoping to “organise training camps and friendly matches in the presence of spectators, with the start of next season in stadiums open to large crowds”.

In addition, the clubs called on the government “to find solutions” for their economic woes after already nearly three months without income principally due to the loss of ticketing and broadcasting revenue.

Several club executives have said the early end to the season has left French football with a financial black hole of between 500 million and 800 million euros ($559-895 million).

Meanwhile, the head of the company that has become the main domestic broadcaster of Ligue 1 in a record deal starting next season has slammed the decision to end the season early, calling it a “strategic error”.

“There was a strategic agreement between the leading leagues and UEFA to finish the season,” said Jaume Roures, the Spanish chief executive of Mediapro, at the launch of his company’s new channel Telefoot on Tuesday.

“For us, breaking that pact was a strategic error.”

Mediapro won the bulk of the rights to show Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 matches for four years starting next season in a total deal worth a record 1.217 billion euros ($1.36 billion) annually.

However, Roures expressed concern that his company’s new product would be diminished with struggling clubs being forced to sell players.

“That could affect the quality of the competition next season and obviously we are not going to be happy if that happens.”

  • DNA research uncovers Dead Sea Scrolls mystery

DNA research on the Dead Sea Scrolls has revealed not all of the ancient manuscripts came from the desert landscape where they were discovered, according to a study published Tuesday.

Numbering around 900, the manuscripts were found between 1947 and 1956 in the Qumran caves above the Dead Sea in the occupied West Bank.

The parchment and papyrus scrolls contain Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic and include some of the earliest-known texts from the Bible, including the oldest surviving copy of the Ten Commandments.

Research on the texts has been ongoing for decades and in the latest study, DNA tests on manuscript fragments indicate that some were not originally from the area around the caves.

“We have discovered through analysing parchment fragments that some texts were written on the skin of cows and sheep, whereas before we thought they had all been written on goat skin,” said researcher Pnina Shor, who heads the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) project studying the manuscripts.

“This proves that the manuscripts do not come from the desert where they were found,” she told AFP.

The researchers from the IAA and Tel Aviv University were unable to pinpoint where the fragments came from during their seven-year study, which focused on 13 texts.

The Dead Sea Scrolls date from the third century BC to the first century AD.

Many experts believe the manuscripts were written by the Essenes, a dissident Jewish sect that had retreated into the Judaean desert around Qumran and its caves. Others argue that some of the texts were hidden by Jews fleeing the advance of the Romans.

“These initial results will have repercussions on the study of the life of Jews during the period of the Second Temple,” which was destroyed in Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 AD, said Shor.

Such archaeological research remains a sensitive subject in Israel and the Palestinian territories, as findings are sometimes used by organisations or political parties to justify their claims to contested land.

In total, some 25,000 parchment fragments have been discovered and the texts have been continuously studied for more than 60 years.

“It’s like piecing together parts of a puzzle,” said Oded Rechavi, a professor who led the Tel Aviv University team.

“There are many scrolls fragments that we don’t know how to connect, and if we connect wrong pieces together it can change dramatically the interpretation of any scroll,” he said.

  • Paris police chief defends forces against ‘racism’ claims

The police chief of Paris defended his forces Tuesday against accusations of brutality and racism as anger over alleged police violence mounts in France as in the United States.

Following a string of complaints of alleged heavy-handedness, Didier Lallement wrote a letter sympathising with the “pain” officers must feel “faced with accusations of violence and racism, repeated endlessly by social networks and certain activist groups”.

The Paris police force “is not violent, nor racist: it acts within the framework of the right to liberty for all,” he insisted in an email to the city’s 27,500 law enforcers.

Lallement refused permission for a rally outside a Paris court later Tuesday to call for justice for a young black man, Adama Traore, who died in police custody in 2016.

As thousands across the United States protested the police killing last week of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, Lallement expressed concern that the “tone” of the call to rally in Paris could expose a “sensitive site” to risk.

He also cited a nationwide ban on public gatherings of more than 10 people designed to hamper coronavirus spread, according to the Paris police department.

Organisers have vowed to press ahead with the protest under the banner “Truth for Adama”.

Traore, 24 was apprehended in a house where he hid after leading police on a 15-minute chase in 2016.

He lost consciousness in their vehicle and died at a nearby police station. He was still handcuffed when paramedics arrived.

    – ‘Truth for Adama’ –

One of the three arresting officers told investigators that Traore had been pinned down with their combined bodyweight after his arrest.

The case sparked violent protests in the Paris suburbs and became a rallying cry for police brutality in France, which young, black men say is often targeted at them.

Last Friday, French medical experts exonerated the three police officers, dismissing a medical report commissioned by the young man’s family that said he had died of asphyxiation.

It was the third official report to clear the officers.

Several French officers have been investigated for brutality against members of the public at long-running “yellow vests” anti-government rallies, and more recent anti-pension reform strikes.

Scores of protesters were maimed by rubber bullets or stun grenades, some losing an eye or a hand.

On January 3 this year, a 42-year-old man suffocated to death after being pinned face down to the ground during an arrest in Paris.

    – ‘Republican bulwark’ –

Last week, a 14-year-old was badly injured in one eye during a police operation in Bondy, one of Paris’s less wealthy northern suburbs, sparking protests.

Lallement insisted Tuesday that any officer who erred would be appropriately punished.

“But I will not accept that individual actions throw into question the republican bulwark that we are against delinquency and those who dream of chaos and anarchy,” he wrote.

The police department in a tweet Tuesday also denounced the “unacceptable, systematic questioning of police intervening in difficult contexts with hostile crowds.”

  • George Floyd protests: Twitter bans over #DCBlackout hoax

Twitter has suspended hundreds of accounts for spreading claims about a Washington DC “blackout” which never happened.

Amid widespread civil unrest in the US, thousands to tweets using the #DCBlackout hashtag claimed that communications had been blocked in the capital to cripple protests.

But there was no evidence of this.

Twitter also said it had banned an account for inciting violence while impersonating a protest group.

The #DCBlackout hashtag trended on Twitter on Monday, with millions of tweets and retweets claiming that internet and phone communications were cut late in the night as the protests continued.

But reporters covering the protests had no such problems, and Twitter collated several of their tweets into a prominent link in Twitter’s main website sidebar. An internet monitoring service also said there was no indication of any widespread disruption.

A Twitter spokesperson said the social media site had “suspended hundreds of spammy accounts” that used the #DCBlackout hashtag, citing the company’s platform manipulation and spam policies.

The DC blackout hoax is a classic example of an internet rumour spiralling out of control.

The hashtag first started going viral on Twitter in the early hours of Monday. Panicky messages about a blackout also spread on Facebook, Reddit and later on Instagram too.

Some of the most shared posts were sent by users who were not based in Washington DC or even in the US.

Despite the lack of evidence of a blackout, the hashtag garnered more than 500,000 tweets from 35,000 unique accounts in a matter of hours and became a global trend.

Concerned residents in and around Washington DC then saw the trend on their social media feeds and began posting about it to find out what was going on.

So by the time Twitter removed it from its “trending topics” list, the claim may have been seen by millions worldwide.

This is a playbook we have seen over and over again.

When a major event is developing, rumours and claims about an emotional topic can go viral without any evidence to support them.

Twitter also suspended another account which claimed to represent the left-wing Antifa group, calling for violence.

But the antifa_us account turned out to be operated by a known white nationalist group operating under an assumed name, Twitter told US media.

Before it was suspended, it tweeted messages including: “Tonight … we move into the residential areas … the white hoods … and we take what’s ours”.

  • Singing with masks could lead to respiratory problems – Singer

A praise and worship leader, Emmanuel Fisher Amankawaa, has told Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that the use of face mask and singing would be difficult for singers as churches plan to resume following the easing of restrictions.

  • 95 persons recover from Coronavirus in Eastern Region Health Director

95 persons out of a total of 134 who tested positive for COVID-19 in the Eastern Region have fully recovered from the disease.

This was announced by the Eastern Regional Health Directorate on Tuesday, June 2, 2020.

Regional Health Director,  Dr. Alberta Biritwum Nyarko made this known at the official reopening of the Afcon Construction Camp B site at Kpong in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality.

She indicated that seven out of 21 health workers who contracted the virus in line of duty have also fully recovered.

“For the Eastern Region, we have 134 cases so far. But I must also say that 95 out of these 134 have fully recovered which means that we have at least 70 percent recovery as at now. Unfortunately, we have some of our health workers also infected some of them in line of duty or because of community spread. We have 21 of our health workers who have so far been infected and seven of them have also recovered.”

Dr. Nyarko mentioned that there is ongoing surveillance by health professionals to make sure that further infections are reduced and contained.

“We had all the cooperation of the company, the local government authority, security and also from the indefatigable health staff who had to work 24 hours every day for the past 10 weeks to ensure that we can proudly say, the outbreak is over, here in Kpong and Afcon camp B. We assure you of the fact that surveillance is still going on. We are not out of the woods yet because the infection is still in Ghana. We have to put our best foot forward so that when we have another infection, we will able to immediately find it and do the needful by containing It,” she added.

On his part,  Eric Kwakye Darfour the Eastern Regional Minister was impressed with the 100 percent recovery rate of all infected engineers working on the Tema to Mpakadan Railway project at the AFCON camp B.

The camp was where the Eastern Region recorded its first case of COVID-19.

Mr. Darfour, therefore, charged the workers to observe all the safety protocols as they resume work on the project.

“Today, we are all grateful that we have all gathered for a good purpose not to grief over the passing of anyone. We were faced with an obstacle but due to the hard work of the health service, the corporation from the company, and the front line workers, all of those who were affected by the virus have recovered.”

  • Ato Forson yet to file question on GHS280.3M COVID-19 expenses Parliament

Parliament has clarified that the Ranking Member of the Finance Committee of Parliament, Cassiel Ato Forson, is yet to file a question on the expenditure returns of GHS280.3 million allocated for the coronavirus fight.

Mr. Forson had reportedly claimed on Accra-based Joy FM that he filed the question during the partial-lockdown period.

These concerns from Mr. Forson had been highlighted earlier on Monday when he called on the Auditor-General to undertake a special audit into the GHS280.3 million that was allocated by the government for the provision of food, water and sanitation under the Coronavirus Alleviation Programme (CAP).

Parliament, however, says, from its records, there is no specific question on the GHS280.3 million on its file.

The statement further noted that Mr. Forson admitted he was yet to file the question.

“Upon further consultation with the Honourable Member [Cassiel Ato Forson], he indicated that he intends to file a question today [Tuesday] on the matter raised in the media.”

“Once it is filed, it will be processed in accordance with the rules of the House,” the statement added.

    New constituency allegations

Parliament also noted that Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, was alleged to have alluded to the creation of new constituencies in a presentation on May 20.

It refuted such claims saying “no such presentation has been made by the Majority Leader.”

“In fact, the Majority Leader in the said presentation stated categorically that the Committee of Subsidiary Legislation should endeavour to submit its report on the Public Elections 2020 for the consideration of the House on or before the coming into force of the instrument.”

The Education Minister Mathew Opoku Prempeh has revealed that parents and guardians will not be allowed to visit their children when school finally resumes for final year Senior High School students on June 22.

  • NDC joins EC pilot registration exercise

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is participating in the Electoral Commission (EC) pilot voter registration exercise.

The party has therefore directed its regional executives to attend the programme, an indication that when the registration finally takes of later parts of the month the NDC party may participate against its avowed opposition.

The exercise commenced today, June 2, 2020, and is taking place across the 16 regional capitals of Ghana.

In a statement signed by its Director of Elections, Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, the NDC directed “five persons including two Regional Executives, two persons of the Regional directorate and an IT personnel to attend.”

“Attendants are to observe the following: the time it takes for a voter to go through the registration process, the process of guarantorships and the time it takes,” it further directed.

It says the EC invited one Regional party officer to observe the exercise which is expected to end on June 3.

According to the EC, the essence of the exercise is to identify problems associated with the new biometric registration system, including its effect under various weather conditions and find ways of mitigating them.

The EC says “all issues identified will be forwarded to the Commission at the national level for the necessary rectifications to be made before the commencement of the exercise at the end of this month.”

“All Ghanaian citizens of 18 years and above and of sound mind are expected to register where they reside when the exercise begins; with either a Ghanaian passport or Ghana card as proof of identification or have two guarantors who have already registered as voters so they can register.”

“Safety measures will be put in place at all registration centres throughout the country to protect applicants, who are mandated to wear nose masks to the registration centres,” it stated.

  • NDC’s George Loh on why he participated in EC’s pilot voter registration

Former Member of Parliament for North Dayi on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr George Loh has explained that he participated in the Electoral Commission’s pilot voter registration exercise on Tuesday to be sure of how the exercise was ongoing.

There have been concerns that even though the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was opposed to the new register, it was preparing its members to get ready to register.

On social media, some have said Mr Loh’s participation in the pilot exercise was a move which, was not in consonance with the position of the NDC.

But Mr Loh in a radio interview with Accra based Citi FM on Tuesday evening said his participation in the exercise does not change the position of the NDC.

He disagreed with the suggestion that his action was hypocritical to the party’s position.

Mr Loh is currently the Volta Regional Vice Chairman of the NDC.

He participated in the pilot voter registration exercise in the Electoral Commission’s office Ho on Tuesday.

Asked in the radio interview if his action was not something that indicates he has abandoned his party in the cold in relation to the fight against the new voters register Mr Loh said:

“I do not believe that I have said anywhere or our party the National Democratic Congress [NDC] has said anywhere that we have abandoned our position or we have changed our position towards the compliation of a new voters register.”

“We have remained resolute that it is not a wise decision for the EC to say at this time, that they are going to compile a new voters register. and so it is untrue if anybody says that anybody in the NDC, let alone me, George Loh has abandoned our party’s position.”

He said there was no need to mix the issues because the NDC has not said anywhere that it was abandoning voting in Election 2020 and that the party has said that “at best the EC’s option should be a limited registration and not a compilation of a new voters register.

“If it is time for limited registration, the EC will use the system, won’t they? And so if they are piloting what they say are new machines don’t we deserve to know what kind of things they are doing and if there are any hanky panky games we prepare ourselves? So clearly, this thing is funny and all those doing mischief with it should better stop because the card that is being showcased is a dummy card, I cannot use it in any election.”

“So nobody should walk around with their minds thinking that, yes some people have acquired cards and they are going to participate in the voting that is going to happen in the compilation of a new voters register. This card given me has nothing to do with the new voters register, it is only a pilot of a system they say they are bringing, and some of us wanted to be sure, that yes.”

Mr Loh said as a Regional Vice Chairman in the Volta Region, he has a responsibility to ensure that proper things are done in the region and that he was called by the Regional Chairman to go and see what was happening there [EC office] and “I went, and so it is part of my official duty to ensure, and I didn’t go alone, I went with other officers of the party. But I am saying that as a party, we deserve the right to know what is happening at all material times.”
