  • Six feared dead in Swedru-Winneba road accident

Six passengers onboard a Hyundai Grace commercial vehicle are feared dead in an accident that occurred at Gomoa Osamkrom on the Agona Swedru-Winneba main road Tuesday afternoon.

The accident involved a Hyundai Grace with registration number GT 4110-13 which was loaded with many passengers and was heading towards Winneba.

The other accident vehicle is a DAF tanker truck with registration number GT 7728-16 which was heading towards a gas filling station at Agona Swedru to offload gas.

According to information gathered by Graphic Online’s Glibert Mawuli Agbey, another vehicle did an overtaking but had to slow down abruptly in front of the tanker truck.

In an attempt to avoid running into the vehicle which had slowed down abruptly ahead of it, the tanker driver applied his brakes whilst descending a slippery slope towards the Osamkrom township.

In the process, the tanker skidded off the road and hit the Hyundai which veered off the road into a nearby bush.

Officials of the Swedru Municipal Fire Service and the personnel from the Swedru Divisional unit of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service rushed to the scene to maintain law and order.

Six passengers onboard both vehicles including the drivers and their mates who were severely injured were rescued and taken to the Swedru Government Hospital for emergency medical attention.

However, some passengers who are yet to be identified were trapped in the Hyundai vehicle.

For more than six hours, attempts were still underway by the security personnel to rescue them.

Some eyewitnesses said they saw about six people trapped in the Hyundai vehicle which was under the tanker.

    Confirmation

Confirming the incident to Graphic Online, the station Officer at the Swedru Divisional MTTD, Chief Inspector Sampson Boamah said that the rescue team would only be able to retrieve the dead bodies if the LPG gas is discharged from the tanker.

He noted that the situation at the scene of the accident was being attended to with a lot of caution since any little mistake could lead to an explosion which may have devastating effects on the adjoining communities.

He noted that a recovery truck is in the process of trying to remove the container so that the bodies of the passengers trapped to death could be deposited at the morgue for autopsy.

He noted that members of the Osamkrom community who are very close to the accident have been sensitized to avoid flammable items close to the scene that could lead to the explosion of the tanker.

Meanwhile, the Swedru-Winneba main road has been blocked to traffic as commuters and drivers would have to use alternative routes to get to their respective destinations.

Speaking to the community members in their local dialect Dagboni, they also appealed to government and NGOs to come to their support.

“We are calling on government and the NGOs to come to our aid to ensure that the classrooms are re-roof for students to enter,” Mr. Abukari, a resident of Gburumani told GhanaWeb.

Mr. Baba another concerned resident in the Gburumani community explained, “this is a problem that keeps us awake in this community and we have contacted our local authorities to come to the support of the school but no response. We have also contacted the district assembly to come to our support but haven’t heard from them.

  • United States accused of blocking Hanna Tetteh’s appointment as UN envoy to Libya

Germany and France are angry at the Unites States for delaying the appointment of a Hanna Tetteh to replace Ghassan Salamé as the United Nations special envoy for Libya, Ghanaguardian.com can exclusively report.

Paris and Berlin have expressed their disgust over the slowness in the appointment process of Ghana’s former foreign minister to the position which has been left vacant by the ailing Lebanese diplomat.

The two European countries are pointing their fingers at Washington without expressly naming the country but its clear their guns are aimed at the United States.

The post has been vacant since March 2 when the Lebanese Ghassan Salamé resigned from his post as United Nations envoy for Libya for health reasons.

To replace him, the UN secretary-general, Antonio Guterres, had set his sights on Ramtane Lamamra, the former Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs but Washington vetoed his appointment , without giving a reason.

Since then, according to diplomats, Antonio Guterres has submitted another name to the UN Security Council, that of the former Ghanaian minister, Hanna Serwaa Tetteh, 53, who has been the United Nations’ representative to the African Unioon since 2018.

Some sources say Maddam Tetteh’s profile does not convince a lof the diplomats on the American side but other says Washington is keen on a figure they can control given the strategic nature of their oil interests in the North African country.

As a result of that her appointment has been stopped which has angered France and Germany, who together denounced the United States, without naming it.

“We have made no progress,” said French ambassador to the UN, Nicolas de Rivière, during a joint press conference with his German counterpart on Monday. “The first (name) has been rejected and there is still no agreement on the second. It is really painful, ”when there is“ an emergency now ”with a“ very bad situation in Libya.”

Since 2015, two rival authorities have been fighting for power on the ground: the Government of National Unity (GNA), recognized by the UN and based in Tripoli, and a power embodied by Marshal Khalifa Haftar in the East. Since April 2019, the latter has put a deadlock on any attempt at political settlement by wanting to seize Tripoli militarily.

  • Roadside bomb kills 7 civilians in Afghanistan

Seven civilians were killed by a roadside bomb linked to the Taliban in northern Afghanistan, officials said Tuesday, even as authorities pressed for peace talks with the militants.

Overall violence across much of Afghanistan has dropped, however, since May 24 when the Taliban announced a surprise three-day ceasefire to mark the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

The latest blast struck a small truck carrying a group of labourers late Monday in the volatile district of Khan Abad, in the province of Kunduz.

No group claimed responsibility, but Kunduz provincial spokesman Esmatullah Muradi pointed the finger at the Taliban.

“The Taliban usually plant roadside bombs to target security forces, but their bombs usually kill civilians,” he told AFP.

Two of six others wounded in the blast were in critical condition, said district chief Hayatullah Amiri.

President Ashraf Ghani had welcomed the Taliban ceasefire offer and authorities responded by announcing around 2,000 Taliban prisoners would be released in a “goodwill gesture” with a view to kickstarting peace talks.

Afghanistan’s former chief executive Abdullah Abdullah, who has been appointed to lead the talks, said his team was ready to begin negotiations “at any moment”.

Late on Monday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who has been pushing for peace talks to begin, held a video conference with top officials in Kabul including Ghani and his first deputy Amrullah Saleh.

While Saleh highlighted the importance of ongoing drop in violence and the need for holding on to a ceasefire, the two sides discussed the future steps needed to bring peace in Afghanistan, Ghani’s office said in a statement.

The issue of the release of Taliban prisoners and the venue for the intra-Afghan peace talks were discussed in particular, it said, adding that Pompeo reiterated Washington’s support for a peaceful and stable Afghanistan.

Violence had surged after the Taliban signed a landmark agreement with the United States in February, which paves the way for the withdrawal of all foreign forces by May next year.

The government of Ghana has agreed with investors to postpone interest payment on non-marketable domestic bonds held by public institutions to fund the financial sector clean-up for about GH¢1.2 billion (US$207 million), approximately 0.3% of Gross Domestic Product.

According to Fitch Solutions, the government of Ghana plans cutting spending on goods and services, transfers, and capital investments this year.

This also reflects the lower absorption capacity of the economy due to the COVID-19 pandemic, for a total of at least GH¢1.1 billion (US$189 million), 0.3% of GDP.

“To reduce the financing needs, the government will also draw US$218 million from the Stabilisation Fund and will borrow up to GHS10 billion (USS1.7 billion) from the Bank of Ghana. As a result of all these fiscal policies in place, we anticipate GDP growth to shrink in 2020”, Fitch Solutions forecast.

    Healthcare spending

Fitch emphasized that the government of Ghana has increased healthcare spending in order to address the coronavirus pandemic.

The government committed US$100 million to support preparedness and response, and about US$210 million under its Coronavirus Alleviation Programme to the promotion of selected industries including the pharmaceutical sector supplying COVID-19 drugs and equipment.

Additional funds have also been reserved to address the availability of test kits, pharmaceuticals, equipment, and bed capacity.

On April 26, a major investment in healthcare infrastructure was announced, including the construction or upgrade of 100 district and regional hospitals.

Fitch said an increase in healthcare spending will equate to more testing kits, pharmaceuticals, equipment and bed capacity available to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic.

  • Partey, Koke and Saul are non-negotiable for Diego Simeone

Diego Simeone will continue to view Saul Niguez, Koke, and Thomas Partey as indispensable members of his Atletico Madrid side when football returns this month.

The trio were essential before the break and that won’t change, with the three expected to feature in midfield at San Mames in the first game back.

Simeone knows what they bring to the table and trusts them completely to do a job defensively as well as in attack.

Not even Marcos Llorente’s Anfield heroics are enough to displace any of the three from the XI and only an injury, as has been the case with Koke this term, could see one of them drop out of the team.

Simeone tried an XI on Monday that was as follows: Jan Oblak; Kieran Trippier, Stefan Savic, Jose Gimenez, Renan Lodi; Marcos Llorente, Thomas, Koke, Saul; Thomas Lemar, Diego Costa.

Many accounts have been given on the instances that led to the death of Major Maxwell Adam Mahama, the armed military man who was lynched at Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region by some townfolks in 2017.

On June 2, 2017, the Director-General of the CID, DCOP Bright Oduro gave a detailed account of how Major Mahama met his untimely death through instances of mob justice after being mistaken for an armed robber.

“On Monday, May 29,2017, at about 8:00 am the deceased left the detachment base for a 20km walk, he was in civilian clothing but carried his sidearm (gun)… he had walked to a place at the outskirt of the village where a number of women were selling food items by the road, the deceased stopped to interact with them and even bought some snails which he left with the women to pick-up on his return from the walk. While the deceased was taking out money from his pocket to pay for the snail, the woman from whom the deceased bought the snail and a few others saw the deceased side arm tacked to his waist… without verifying the information, the Assemblyman mobilized the town folk to prepare to attack an armed robber who have been sited by the women,” said DCOP Bright Oduro in a Press Briefing.

  • Charles Awuzie reveals why Anita Oyakhilome left Pastor Chris Oyakhilome

Charles Awuzie is a Cyber-Security Expert, CEO of Gemsbok Group, who lives in South Africa.

He took to his verified Facebook page to reveal why Anita divorced Pastor Chris Oyakhilome.

Do you know why Anita divorced Pastor Chris Oyahkilome?

Her conscience could no longer bear the level of mammon involved in what we call BIG MINISTRIES.

(Understand that before I make any statement, I speak directly with people who know better than some of us.)

It takes a certain level of evil heart to look a poor widow in the eyes and collect what she could use to feed her children in exchange for fake promises of prosperity.

How many seed sowing, tithe paying and anointing tapping pastors in Christ Embassy are truly prosperous? How many of them are dying secretly?

How many winner’s Chapel pastors are wondering if tithe really works because they keep burying their family members despite their bishop’s daily declarations?

It takes a really evil heart to continue in this religious economic war against vulnerable and desperate people. Evangelist Benny Hinn couldn’t afford to die in that evil conscience. Kenneth Hagin confessed. Dr. Abel Damina renounced it.

Bishop Mike Okonkwo said his conscience couldn’t let him continue. I too turned my back on it. Not omitting Dr. Sunday Adelaja and a host of other genuine preachers.

Today, pastor Anita Oyahkilome is Reformed and she is reforming others around her.

But guess who still believes the Sow-To-Prosper fraud? Poor African church givers who donate their future to fund the 1st class lifestyle of their religious slave masters.

For this purpose, Anita left Chris – not because Chris was cheating on her. Most women can accommodate a cheating man but not many women are able to live with a guilty conscience.

I know you won’t believe me because we once brainwashed you never to believe who makes you to reason logically.

But truth shall find a way to prevail…

    Maranatha.

  • Australia PM calls for probe into ‘assault’ on journalist

PM Scott Morrison has spoken to US President Donal Trump after an Australian TV crew was allegedly assaulted by police in Washington, reports say.

Mr Morrison has also asked the Washington embassy to investigate the incident.

Channel 7’s US correspondent Amelia Brace and cameraman Tim Myers were attacked while covering Monday’s protest outside the White House.

Police used tear gas to disperse the protests, leading to a stampede of sorts as the crowds fled – and that’s when the attack appears to have occurred.

The incident was caught on live TV, and the footage was shared on Twitter.

It shows an officer hitting Mr Myers with his shield and then punching him. But another officer intervened and the two reporters escape, just as a third officer swings a baton at them from behind.

The news comes amid a slew of similar reports during protests – of police assaulting journalists, arresting them and even damaging their equipment.
