  • Coronavirus: Brazil now fourth-highest nation in Covid-19 deaths

The number of coronavirus fatalities in Brazil has risen by almost 1,000 in a day, making the country’s overall death toll the world’s fourth-highest.

Its figure of 28,834 has now surpassed France, and only the US, the UK and Italy have recorded more deaths.

President Jair Bolsonaro has consistently played down the outbreak, although the country has the world’s second-highest number of cases.

He has criticised state lockdowns for harming Brazil’s economy and jobs.

    What are the latest figures?

Brazil’s health ministry said the past 24 hours had seen 956 new deaths.

This puts it past France’s total of 28,774. Even if new figures raised the French total back above Brazil, the trends in the two countries show deaths in the Latin American nation are on a far steeper upward trend.

According to a count by Johns Hopkins University, Brazil now has 498,440 confirmed cases.

Only the US has more, with 1.77 million.

The number of deaths in Brazil has been doubling roughly every two weeks, compared to about every two months in the UK, four months in France, and five months in Italy.

Experts have warned that the real figure may be far higher due to a lack of testing.

    Will this change Brazil’s policies?

Mr Bolsonaro is unlikely to alter his stance, arguing that the economic fallout of lockdowns is worse than the outbreak.

He has fought what he calls “the tyranny of total quarantine” by state governors – despite the upward tick in cases – and has even called for Brazil’s football season to resume.

He has also been seen mingling with hundreds of supporters in Brasilia while not wearing a face mask.

On Sunday, Pope Francis added to the pressure on the president by highlighting the plight of the people of the Amazon.

“We call on the Holy Spirit to grant light and strength to the Church and to society in Amazonia, which has been harshly tested by the pandemic,” he said.

Amazonas state has one of Brazil’s highest infection rates and also one of the most underfunded health systems.

Many experts believe Central and South America are now the major hotspots for increased infections.

A combination of under-pressure healthcare systems and a mixed response by governments to the severity of Covid-19 has meant the region cannot apply the same easing of lockdowns taking place in Europe and elsewhere.

  • Old Telenovelas that won the heart of every Ghanaian ;And how the characters are faring now.

Before “Kumkum Bagya” and “Mahubala”, there were telenovela series that won the heart of every Ghanaian. Gone were the days when the old and the young used to rush to the television when darkness was starting to fall. Even our fathers and mothers were more entranced (attracted) by the telenovela series than the young ones. There used to be “Rosalinda”, “Second Chance” and others that made the ladies especially go into gaga. Here are the list of those enchanting telenovelas:

    (1)Rosalinda

Ghanaian girls did not pick up their calls even if it were their parents calling because they didn’t want to miss any scene. They stayed glued to their television. As the saying goes”experience is the best teacher”, this was the first telenovela series I watched, and it was Tv3 that showed it. Tv3 at that time was the “boss” and looked as if it was the only TV station in Ghana. “Rosalinda” was released on 1st of March 1999 and it still holds the record of being the most expensive television production in Mexico. Let us know how our favourite characters are faring now.

This picture of Thalia Sodi Miranda (known as Rosalinda) was taken in 2006.Her last series was “Rosalinda” and she is considered as the “queen of telenovelas” by the mass media Mexico. She starred in many popular telenovela series like “Marimar” in 1994,”Maria Mercedes” in 1992.She is now a famous singer and a successful businesswoman.

Fernando Carrillo(Fernando in “Rosalinda”) who was also one of the main characters has really aged but still looks like he is in his twenties . He is a Venezuelan and still acts unlike Rosalinda.

    (2)Second Chance

You can’t talk about popular telenovela series in Ghana leaving out “second chance”. This series is about a man who comes back from the dead to only find out about how evil her beautiful widow is.

Lorena Rojas (known in the series as Isabel Arroyo) unfortunately died of breast cancer in 2015.

    Lorena Rojas DakruzzyBase

Mario Cimarrio (known as Pedro Jose Donoso /Salvador Cerinza) is one of my favourite telenovela actors. He is a Cuban actor ; he starred in many series like “curse by the sea”, where he was the protagonist; also in “Don’t be late”. He is still active in the movie industry. He still looks handsome.

Martin Karpan (known as Andres Corona) is an Argentine actor. He is still active in the movie industry.

    (3)Storm over paradise

Storm over paradise hit Ghanaians like a storm when Viasat 1 started showing it in 2009. I would be late to school just because I didn’t want to miss a scene.

Sara Maldonado (known as Aymar in the TV series) is a Mexican actress. She is really blessed with glowing

beauty. She has starred in other TV series including “Aurora”, “Triumph of Love” etc.

Elias (known as Nicholas in the series) is a Mexican actor who started his acting career in 2000 and is still active.

Mariana Seoane (known as Maura Duran in the series) is a Mexican actress, model, singer and a songwriter. She has starred in many TV series like “The inmate”, “Curse by the sea” and many more interesting ones.

Jose Luiz (known as David in the series) is an actor and a model. He starred in “fearless hearts” and others.

    (4)Shree

So far, this is the telenovela that forced many schools to close before the actual closing time just because of how captivating it was. This series made workers to run from their offices to their various homes when it was about to get to 3:00pm for the Indian series to start on TV3 ; it even appeared in the news that workers were abondening their works to go watch the series. Let us see how the Indian characters, who sweetly influenced Ghanaian students at that time to run from school to stay glue to their television, are faring now :

Wasna Ahmed (known as Shree) is an Indian actress who starred in other TV series like “Phulwa”, “Palaandu vaazhga” etc.

Pankaj Singh Tiwari (starred as Hari) was a model before turning into an actor.

  • Akufo-Addo has succumbed to uneducated pressure Sam George

In less than 24 hours after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo eased the restrictions on social gatherings by allowing churches and mosques to operate with only 100 congregants per hour, Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George has tongue-lashed Akufo-Addo for his action.

According to him, the President has bowed to the pressure of ignorant people to allow churches and mosques to function.

The Ningo-Prampram MP has called on Akufo-Addo to order the closure of churches until further notice.

“What kind of meaningful church service can you have with 100 people for a maximum of 1 hour? Mr President, you have fortunately succumbed to uneducated pressure. Keep the churches closed,” he said.

  • George Floyd death: Lawyer calls it ‘premeditated murder’

A lawyer for the family of George Floyd, whose death sparked unrest across the US, has accused a police officer of “premeditated murder”.

Minneapolis policeman Derek Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder, but lawyer Benjamin Crump told CBS news it was a case of first-degree murder.

“We think that he had intent… almost nine minutes he kept his knee in a man’s neck that was begging and pleading for breath,” he said.

Several US cities have imposed curfews.

The Floyd case has reignited US anger over police killings of black Americans. It follows the high-profile cases of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Eric Garner in New York and others that have driven the Black Lives Matter movement.

“The fact that officer Chauvin kept his knee on his neck for almost three minutes after he was unconscious. We don’t understand how that was not first degree murder. We don’t understand how all these officers haven’t been arrested,” lawyer Crump said.

Three other officers present at the time have also since been sacked.

For many the outrage over George Floyd’s death also reflects years of frustration over socioeconomic inequality and segregation, not least in Minneapolis itself.

In video footage, Mr Chauvin can be seen kneeling on Mr Floyd’s neck for several minutes on Monday. Mr Floyd repeatedly says that he is unable to breathe.

  • Kennedy Agyapong drops the photo of Bishop Obinim’s house in Spain

Loudmouth Member of parliament for the good people of Assin Central Constituency, Honourable Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has caused a stir online with his latest rant with his controvert partner, Bishop Angel Obinim who remains the founder and leader of International God’s Way Church.

Kennedy Agyapong who has been in the news for all the good and the bad reasons since he unleashed his venom on the popular cleric; Bishop Daniel Obinim has gathered huge admiration from the Ghanaian populace, more importantly, those who hold the belief that majority of the pastors, bishops, and prophets in Ghana are hugely fake.

The CEO of KenCity Media, Kennedy Agyapong has dragged Bishop Daniel Obinim to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), which is a specialized agency to monitor and investigate economic and organized crime and on the authority of the government.

The controversial Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong who claims he only dreams of two things in his sleep thus fight and money launched his crusade to expose fake pastors and claims Obinim is one of them and remains his target for now as his cup turns full.

  • 6 Ghanaian celebrities who are bad influence on the youth (opinion)

The Ghanaian ideal which is found in the sacred culture of our ancestors is being eroded. The values that made us who we are are being diluted and adultrated. Principles that were upheld by our forefather are being trampled upon and made to lose relevance in our society. And this is all due to certain individuals who have managed to get unto the public space with social media and television.

These individuals have corrupted themselves with other cultures and traditions alien to our country, and have come back to influence the youth with this.

You might look at this article with sceptism. But really, what happened to modesty in dressing? Our parents kept it together in their marriages for decades and made us have a good upbringing. Yet, these persons have come and are making others sin and attempt infedelity in their marriages.

What one does not know does not kill them.

Some of the activities they perform and lifestyle they live are not wrong, but the audience they promote it among is downright wrong. Why will you let a thirteen year old see your breast, then tell the public that you are free to live and dress as you like?

Now, imagine, would you, as a lady, go and walk semi naked among thugs who are intoxicated? So why do you try to justify your living as ‘I am free to dress as I want’ then post it for the world to see?

Do you get the logic? Yes, you can dress how you want. But you do not need to let the whole world know, do you?

This is how these people are corrupting the Youth. And if we are not mindful, the degeneration will be prevalent and widespread that no morality will exist in our culture.

The rites we learnt that passed people through their life are now redundant. Those were our cultures. IF YOU LOSE YOUR CULTURE, YOU’VE LOST YOURSELF.

So a lot of us are lost.

We do not listen to our adult speak because we feel we know a lot. So culture is not transfered.

These are few of the ‘celebrities’ who are degenerating the society with their lifestyle on social media.

    1. Efia Odo

She is an amazing and industrious lady, trying to make her mark in the world. She is really admired for her candor and soft heart. However, Efia is too much of an exhibitionist. Almost every male and female in Ghana who is online can describe her private parts – breast and below. Like the name suggests, they are called private parts because they are that, PRIVATE. But Efia has made hers public.

    2. Stephanie Benson

Another lady admired for her confidence and look-young spirit. She is married to a good husband and has lovely children. She is also lovely in person. However, when Stephanie posts almost nude photos of herself on Social Media, all the good values she teaches get mired by those. Every good stuff has some amount of chaff. (Rice has got some chaff, so has beans) But the Youth cannot seive these chaffs from the wheat. Stephanie’s chaff is her exhibitionism she displays on social media.

True, it is a free world, but you have to be mindful of others and their progress. Not being self-centered.

    3. Sandra Ankobia

As an accomplished lawyer and media personality, she stole the media waves with her charm and intelligence. And she is. Coming from somewhat a privilege background, she has gotten the best of education and exposure. But lately, Sandra has been living her life lavishly, which is not bad in itself. But she does that for the world to see. You see, not everyone is strong like you are. So do not lead someone who is weak into temptation. The Bible speaks clearly of this, when Paul says, “if you know the meat you will eat will offend someone, don’t do it, at least before them”.

    4. Princess Shyngle

Princess Shyngle Biography and Net Worth | Net worth, First date ...

Downright a bad influence. She has come out herself to say that she is not a good influence to the youth. So the least said about her, the better.

    5. Moesha Buodong

I am sure this list will not be complete if her name was not included. Moesha did probably the abominable when she had her interview with CNN’s Amanpour. She betrayed Ghanaians when she sold to the outside world her lack for reverence for our cultural heritage and value. With the media being an educational tool, the youth have accepted what she said as true and okay. But that is plainly wrong!

    6. Lydia Forson

Yes, I put her here for a reason. Lydia is probably our favorite actress. She is outspoken and very confident. Something we all admire. But when some of the utterances that come from her go against the fibre of our makeup, our culture, she ceases to be good influence. We have principles of ‘ladyhood’ which is ‘Aketesia’, meaning covering up oneself. So do you think the originators of these were daft when they coined the glorious state with that word?

I know this list is not exhaustive, and there are hundreds of names that fit in this list. But I wanted to bring to your attention this growing canker in our society which is being fueled by the media, social media and the internet. This canker is corrupting the fibre of our livelihood as Ghanaians. And if left to linger, will end in a complete degeneration of the morals our society was established on.

JUST BECAUSE IT FEELS RIGHT DOES NOT MEAN IT IS RIGHT. Speak up if you care about our values, traditions and culture.

  • Don’t misquote Mac Manu, NPP isn’t against new voters’ register – John Boadu

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu has jumped to the defence of the party’s campaign manager for 2020 elections, Peter Mac Manu, over the latter’s recent comments regarding election rigging claims against the party.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), through its National Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, holds that the EC’s decision to use the Ghana card and passport as the legal documents for registering eligible Ghanaians into a new voters’ register is a ploy to skew the December polls in favour of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The NDC strongly opposes the EC saying the Commission wants to disenfranchise 11 million Ghanaians in order to rig the elections for the incumbent government.

Reacting to the NDC claims, Mr Peter Mac Manu emphasized that the governing party has no interest in rigging the elections and is not conspiring with the EC to perpetrate such crime.

He stressed that, with or without a new voters’ register, the NPP will win the elections because they have a solid track record and so doesn’t need the EC’s help.

”We do not need the EC to rig the elections in our favour. NPP will win the election based on our soundtrack record . . . This is because the Ghanaian electorate has confidence in the ruling NPP government since President Akufo-Addo had shown leadership and sought the welfare of the ordinary Ghanaian over the period of his tenure,” he said.

Mr Mac Manu’s comments attracted the attention of seasoned journalist Kwesi Pratt, who speaking on Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, questioned why the NPP is advocating for a new voters’ register if their Campaign Manager has no worries over the old register.

Mr Pratt believes it is baseless for the NPP to support the EC’s decision to compile a new register if the party will win the elections with or without it.

Speaking on the same programme, the party’s General Secretary sought to correct the misconception created by Kwesi Pratt that the NPP Campaign Manager is against the new voters’ register.

John Boadu told host Kwami Sefa Kayi that Kwesi Pratt’s interpretation of Mr Mac Manu’s response is misleading.

According to him, nowhere did Mr Mac Manu make a comment that the NPP supports the old register, therefore clarifying that Mr Mac Manu was rather pointing out to the opposition party that the NPP will win the 2020 elections based on their performance.

“It doesn’t mean Mac Manu is against the compilation of a new register. Mac Manu didn’t say using the old register will make the elections credible. He didn’t say that and don’t misquote him,” John Boadu charged.

Take it or leave it, David Adeleke better known by his stage name as Davido is one person with a good heart and great sense of humor.

It’s no longer news that the Okoye brothers, Jude, Peter and Paul have been on longhead with each for about three years now.

Last week, Cynthia Morgan woke Nigerians up with her revelation of how Jude Okoye according to her pushed her into depression after he took over everything she ever worked for while she was still signed to his record label North side music.

Jude also replied him by accusing him of always trying to use every opportunity to disgrace the family.

That been said, over the weekend, Jude Okoye posted a picture from his yet to be completed apartment in Banana Island and captioned it “Davido call me, I got new anthem”.

” I am in Peter’s house call him to give me the phone “.

Immediately after that, Paul also asked Davido to call his neighbor, which is Jude Okoye, and Davido replied him again.

  • When they were young: Pictures of Akufo-Addo and John Mahama as kids

It may seem very difficult to believe but the immediate past President, Mr. John Dramani Mahama and the current President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, were once children.

It would amaze you to know that, these two important personalities have also sat on floors to play games with their neighborhood friends, suffered punishments from their parents and have been beaten to eat their meals.

Seeing childhood pictures of Presidents make one realize, they had a humble beginning and were once young and  innocent.

  • Reverse decision to reopen schools for final year students – Lecturer to Akufo-Addo

The decision by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to allow final-year students at all levels to resume has been described as terrible and a recipe for disaster.

Lecturer and psychologist at the University of Education, Winneba, Mr. Samuel Ziggah made the call when asked his opinion about the decision to have final year students resume.

The lecturer is of the view that we have open the flood-gate for an escalation of more COVID-19 cases.

He wants the president to rescind the decision before we regret the outcome.

He explained after schools were closed, some of the students travelled and asking them to return without proper mechanisms in place to check them would worsen our plight.

”Asking students to resume will worsen our cases. Our healthcare workers would be overwhelmed with more cases. We will have a break down of our health systems and so, I will encourage the president to rescind his decision with immediate effect,” he said.

He added ”we are behaving as if the coronavirus is no longer with us but we are still having more cases. The argument put forward by the president before asking students to resume is not reasonable and dangerous for us. We are exposing students and Ghanaians to danger. If it will take two years for the coronavirus to be dealt with, we can wait. Education is not a race”.

For him, there would not be a conducive environment for students to learn as anxiety will set in due to the fear for, the virus.

”This not easy. If our cases escalate, we will regret taking this decision. We do not have what it takes to deal with an escalation. Nurses and doctors are even dying from the virus. How much more citizens,” he lamented.

”No responsible parent will allow his or ward to go back to schools. The parents should resist this decision and protect their children.” he advised.

  • eShun is a chronic lying ‘promiscuous’ woman – Kofi Asamoah

Movie Producer, Kofi Asamoah has jabbed Ghanaian singer eShun over her recent testimonial about her estranged ex-manager.

eShun has recently kept the internet busy with her shocking revelations about her ex-manager, Stephen Mensah.

The singer, in recent interviews, accused her ex-manager of abusing her after their professional relationship turned into a romantic affair.

She also confidently disclosed that she had sexual affairs behind her ex-manager cum fiancé, cheating on him twice but offered no reasons for her infidelity.

She also denied signing a five-year contract with him as her manager.

It is however unclear what to believe or not to believe in eShun’s new testament because in her previous interviews last year, she had blatantly denied all claims of having a love affair with the ex-manager and told the media that she had a five-year contract with Stephen Mensah.

Beginning from when their professional relationship turned romantic to her being abused and her revealing she had no contract with the ex-manager, it appears eShun’s story calls for empathy but one person who is not enthused about her call for pity is Kofi Asamoah.

Touching on the issue on Peace FM’s ‘Entertainment Review’, Kofi Asamoah touted eShun as a promiscuous woman.

To him, eShun has shot herself in the foot as by revealing she cheated on her ex-manager portrays her as an unfaithful woman and someone who enjoys having multiple sexual relations even when in a committed relationship.

“It establishes that she’s a promiscuous person. That is who she is. She is a woman who can cheat on you in a relationship,” he said.

On her denial of having signed a five-year contract with the manager, Kofi Asamoah further labeled eShun as a chronic liar.

“Clearly, eShun is a liar. She is not a truthful person because if you check her previous utterances as compared to how she is talking now, it is difficult to tell when next she will come and say somebody pushed me to speak ill of Stevie Mensah,” he asserted.

  • Easing restrictions: Let’s be cautious – Alex Segbefia

Former health minister and a member of the National Democratic technical team for the coronavirus, Mr. Alex Segbefia has bemoaned the lack of discipline as the government has eased restrictions on some aspect of social gatherings.

He underscored the need for Ghanaians to be disciplined and adhere to the safety protocols despite alluding to the fact that discipline does not exist.

He was worried some persons are still of the belief that the coronavirus was a myth.

Mr. Segbefia admonished churches, mosques to put in measures to ensure the virus is contained.

The easing of restrictions and the directive to allow the Electoral Commission and National Identification Authority (NIA) to resume their operations means they would be more contacts hence the need for strict measures to be taken to ensure the cases are not increased further.

Speaking to Kwame Agyapong on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5f, he cautioned authorities not to bang all their hopes in our low mortality rate but rather strive to protect lives.

Persons with underlining health conditions such as diabetics, heart disease, hypertension and others stand at higher risk should we record more cases and so we have to protect all these persons, he added.

President Nana Akufo-Addo on Sunday announced changes to the COVID-19 protocols being implemented to contain the spread of the virus.

Mr Akufo-Addo indicated that schools should resume for final year students in Universities, Senior High Schools (SHSs) and Junior High Schools (JHSs).

Similarly, churches and mosques have been asked to resume normal worship services but only with 100 people in attendance during each period.

Attendees are to wear masks, observe social distancing and names recorded for each service.

Meanwhile, fumigation of churches, mosques and schools will be undertaken ahead of reopening whereas all teachers and students will be provided with face masks.

Security services have been tasked to enforce rules of easing.

The president declared that institutions who flout regulations will be sanctioned without fear or favour.

  • Kennedy Agyapong exposes NDC again, says STL and NDC bloated voters’ register by 1.5 million names.

Member of Parliament for Assin Central constituency, Hon. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has exposed the opposition National Democratic Congress on the main reason why they are ‘crying’ against the Electoral Commission’s decision to scrap the old Voter’s register.

According to the outspoken MP, the outcry of the NDC party to oppose the compilation of a new register is because they fear sacrificing their corrupt deals which they did in connivance with the Israeli IT company STL. He states categorically that the NDC together with STL have illegally added 1.5million names to the current voter’s register, and they are afraid of losing those huge bloated numbers.

He therefore said that had it not been the 1.5million ghost votes in John Mahama’s account, Nana Akuffo Addo would have won by about 2.5 million votes difference in the last elections in 2016. This he said is the main reason behind NDC’s vehement objection to the compilation of the new register.

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has set June 2020 as the time of beginning the compilation of a new register for voters, going into the December 2020 Elections.

Meanwhile the opposition NDC has given several reasons why they believe the EC’s decision is not the best. Their main reason currently is that the COVID-19 pandemic makes it unsafe to ask Ghanaians to go through the registration process, but the Electoral Commission is saying they have put measures in place to ensure adherence to all safety precautions to ensure Ghanaians go through the process safely. Initially the party was citing financial reasons for their objecting the idea, saying Ghana do not have the required funding to compile a completely new register, but it seems this point has been dropped now.

But Hon. Kennedy Agyapong believes the NDC has a hidden agenda which they are seriously pursuing. That is to protect the 1.5 million names already smuggled into the electoral system and which guarantees them of a cool 1.5 million votes even before the December general elections is conducted.

Hon. Kennedy Agyapong was speaking on Happy FM’s Epa Hoa Daben political talk show.

  • Teachers need training on coronavirus case management – Education Watch

The Executive Director of Africa Education Watch Kofi Asare has said teachers need training in managing Covid-19 cases in secondary schools as restrictions on school activities will be eased from June 5.

According to him, teachers also needed to be trained in providing psycho-social supports to students who may have contracted the disease, as well as managing stigma attached to contracting the virus.

He told Francis Abban on the Morning Starr Monday that his organisation has incorporated these recommendations in their letter to government on how to manage a COVID-19 secondary school environment.

“Managing a Covid secondary school environment means that a teacher is the one who has custody of the children and for that matter needs to be trained on how to manage any possible case of Covid-19.

“Any child who may have had COVID, the teacher would have to provide psycho-social support to the student. And giving the stigma attached to this, most students will be jittery and they may not have the right frame of mind to learn. The teachers will have to be giving psycho-social support to students. So, you need to train the teachers in all these,” he said.

Mr Asare also noted further that teachers needed to be trained “on how to teach in a socially distant class such that movements are restricted, such that the teachers are wearing their PPEs and deployment of laser thermometers in schools.”

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Sunday, May 31 announced that churches and students will resume this month for final year students as part of measures to ease the restrictions introduced to slow the spread of the deadly COVID-19.

Effective June 5, 2020, Churches can reopen with a maximum of 100 people under effective social distancing rules. Churches and Mosques must also not spend more than 1 hour during a service.

  • Irate assembly members describe election of Tarkwa MCE as barbaric and irresponsible

Irate assembly members of Tarkwa-Nsuaem in the Western Region who were prevented from voting in the confirmation of the new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) as required by law have described the action as barbaric, crude, irresponsible.

According to them, they will not rest on their oars but will employ all legitimate means to seek redress and reversal of the unsolicited disgrace brought upon the people of Tarkwa-Nsuaem by the Western Regional Minister and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tarkwa.

They also said the move was an affront to the democratic tenets of the country and a threat to the local governance practice.

Speaking at a press conference organised on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at Tarkwa, the Spokesperson of the angry assembly members, Papa Kwesi Ephraim, Assembly Member of Kwabedu Electoral Area, registered their anger against the authorities including the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah and the Member of Parliament for Tarkwa George Mireku-Duker disallowing them to exercise their constitutional rights during the “Rambo-Style” of election without inviting the twenty-two duly elected assembly members as required by law.

Mr. Ephraim stated that the so-called election on which the presidential nominee for the position of the Municipal Chief Executive was confirmed was illegal since it did not follow the legal processes as prescribed by law the local government Act, 2016, Act 936 as amended.

They have, however, refused to recognise Mr. Benjamin Kesse as the legally confirmed MCE for the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Assembly following the shambolic confirmation last week Friday.

They have petitioned the president and all the relevant institutions in the country to take interest in the matter and allow justice to prevail at the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly.

On Wednesday, May 13, 2020, President Akufo-Addo revoked the appointment of the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Chief Executive Gilbert Kenneth Asmah.

Prior to that, the President nominated the former presiding member, Benjamin Kessie, but, as the Local Government Act, Act (963 as amended) requires the assembly to convene a meeting to confirm his nomination.

Unfortunately, the nominee failed in the first attempt to secure the two-thirds majority as the law requires.

Subsequently, machiavellian tactics were adopted by leading members of government to force the confirmation of the MCE down the throats of the Assembly Members, which got their goats.

The Spokesperson of the Aggrieved Assembly Members who is also the Assembly Member Kwabedu Electoral Area in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem municipality, Paa Kwesi Ephraim threatened to seek redress and reversal of the confirmation of the newly elected MCE at the law court.

Mr. Ephraim accused the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah and Member of Parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuaem George Mireku-Duker describing their conduct as enemies of good governance, democracy and rule of law.

  • The common thing between John Mahama and Samira Bawumia

Mr John Dramani Mahama, the immediate past president of the Republic of Ghana and also the current flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, has many excellent qualities that both members of his party and members of other parties will testify to any day.

When it comes to communication skills, he is apt. He knows just how to get his audience in tune with him and can make some very lasting comments in the minds of his audience.

Another good thing about him is that he is a dandy. He loves to dress and appear good to the eye. Some even refer to him as a ladies’ man.

Of course, these are not the only good things about him, there are more.

Mrs Hajia Samira Bawumia, the wife of the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, is a rear kind of politician whom one cannot help but love and admire.

She possesses so many excellent qualities too. She is also a good communicator with a very serenely calm voice.

Apart from being naturally beautiful, she loves to dress to kill. Her pictures are a delight to watch.

She has brought some youthful exuberance, elegance, class and prestige to the office of the second ladyship of our dear country.

With her foundation, Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Project (SEHP), she goes out of the political environment to help many people across the length and breath of this country.

As politicians, being able to speak many languages is a big advantage as it helps them to be able to relate with the people better. The fact that they are able to speak these many languages make them acceptable to the local people who may not be able to speak English Language with them.

By this, you are encouraged to learn to speak more languages as it will help you in diverse ways.

The next time any of these two great politicians pass by you, be careful which language you speak. They may understand you perfectly well.

  • eShun is untrustworthy and a liar – Arnold Asamoah Baidoo

Entertainment Analyst, Arnold Asamoah Baidoo has expressed deep resentments over the conduct of Ghanaian music sensation, Eshun, who has recently set social media into a frenzy over revelations regarding her ex-manager, Stephen Mensah.

Singer Eshun’s Instagram and other social media accounts have been seized by her ex-manager following their bitter separation and after estranging her manager, she granted an interview with Zionfelix disclosing how her ex-manager abused her.

According to the budding artiste, she never signed a contract with Stephen Mensah who managed and projected her music career in the past.

Explaining why there was no contractual agreement, she revealed her ex-manager who later became her boyfriend came with a promise to marry her and supported her career because they were in a romantic relationship.

The singer also happilly disclosed she cheated twice on her ex-manager in their love affair but didn’t provide reasons why she decided to have sexual relations outside her relationship.

She further added that her ex-manager cum boyfriend was brutally abusive towards her.

These revelations by Eshun are however contrary to her previous interviews with the media where she had denied any amorous relationship with Stephen Mensah and also stated she had signed a five-year contract with him.

Juxtaposing the inconsistent statements made by Eshun, Arnold Asamoah Baidoo concludes the singer is an absolute liar and very deceitful.

To him, for Eshun to have earlier told Ghanaians and her fans that she had a contract and a professional relationship with her ex-manager and today make a U-turn to retract all her claims shows she’s not trustworthy.

Arnold, speaking on ‘Entertainment Review’ on Peace FM, was extremely disppointed in the character and brand of Eshun, and demanded an apology from her.

“She lied to all of us a year ago that nothing of that sort was going on. You sat on a public radio, a public domain and medium and lied to us, that makes you a liar. What proves that all those revelations about the abuse were not also lies because you have a track record? A year ago, you denied being in a relationship but even if that’s the case now, why didn’t she apologize to Ghanaians?

“it could be what she is saying is true although I have my doubts because of her track record of lying to us…However, these are my takeaways from the interview she granted; 1. Her credibility has been heavily hit because of how she’s lied over the period. 2. I find it weird with how she was gutsy enough to come out and declare that she cheated twice on her boyfriend. I was like this girl is bold. I’m saying this because of our culture and terrain, and how people look at you. Because she is young; she’s a budding artiste…Again, I find it quite weird that was this done because of a certain song you want to promote? If you check the chronology of what is happening, for me, I don’t think it sits right with me seriously,” he stated.

  • Trump delays ‘outdated’ G7 leaders’ summit

US President Donald Trump has said he will postpone this year’s G7 summit and invite leaders of other countries to participate in the talks.

“I don’t feel that… it properly represents what’s going on in the world. It’s a very outdated group of countries,” Mr Trump said on Saturday.

The G7 group, which the US hosts this year, includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the UK.

The president said Russia, South Korea, Australia and India should be invited.

Speaking to reporters on board the presidential plane Air Force One, Mr Trump said that he was delaying the summit – which was scheduled to take place later in June – until September.

Last week, Mr Trump said it might be possible to hold a gathering at the White House and potentially parts of Camp David, the US presidential country retreat, despite concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel later rejected the president’s invitation to attend a summit in person because of the outbreak.

Her spokesman thanked Mr Trump, but said the German leader “cannot agree to her personal participation, to a journey to Washington”.

On Friday, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson “agreed on the importance of convening the G7 in person in the near future” following a conversation with the US president, the White House said in a statement.

The G7 – or Group of Seven – leaders were scheduled to meet by videoconference in June in response to Covid-19.

The group is made up of seven of the world’s largest economies.

It regards itself as “a community of values”, with freedom and human rights, democracy and the rule of law, and prosperity and sustainable development as its key principles.

  • Amazon UK website defaced with racist abuse

Amazon has blamed a “bad actor” for racist abuse that appeared on multiple listings on its UK website.

The abuse, now removed, appeared when users searched the online shop for Apple AirPods and similar products.

It was unclear how long the racist language remained on the site, but it sparked outrage on Twitter and the sharing of screenshots and video grabs.

“We are removing the images in question and have taken action on the bad actor,” Amazon told the BBC.

The company did not elaborate on the “bad actor”, nor give details of how many products were defaced and how long the abuse was visible on the listings.

Nadine White, a journalist for the Huffington Post, tweeted that the abuse “needs to be acknowledged, removed, explained, apologised for asap. Being Black right now is hard enough; we don’t need to be called the N- word while shopping online, to boot”.

Another Twitter user said Amazon should have been able to remove the offending messages in minutes. “They’re still on Amazon UK. Extraordinarily poor site administration,” he said during early hours of Sunday.

Amazon also allows third-party retailers to sell goods through its website, with the company making about half its retail revenues from this.

But the Amazon Marketplace platform has come under scrutiny.

There has been concern about counterfeit goods appearing in the listings, and during the coronavirus pandemic Amazon was criticised for not doing enough to stop sellers inflating prices.

In April, several of Amazon’s foreign websites, including the UK domain, were added to the US trade regulator’s “notorious markets” report on marketplaces known for counterfeiting and piracy concerns.

Amazon strongly disagreed with the report at that time, describing it as a “purely political act”.

  • Election 2020 must happen – Oppong-Nkrumah

Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, says it is clear to all Ghanaians that the December general elections must take place despite the existence of the COVID-19 global pandemic.

He said the only question that remains about the elections and the pandemic is what the electoral commission of Ghana and its related agencies are going to do to ensure the safety of the Ghanaian population against the virus before and during the elections.

“I think we are clear in our minds that this election 2020 must happen. Countries have had elections in the midst of this pandemic, the question is how do we prepare ourselves to have an election in the midst of this pandemic and in the manner that we can protect our population.”

The minister who was speaking on JoyNews before the president’s announcement of easing of restrictions said the decision by the government and the EC to ensure the elections are able to take place is not a political one as some may seem to suggest. • Coronavirus: Mandatory testing of all students not feasible – Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah

Minister of Information Kojo Oppong Nkrumah says calls for the government to conduct mandatory testing for COVID-19 on all students as a precursor to the opening of schools is not feasible considering how contraction and spread of the virus works.

Speaking on JoyNews before the president’s address on Sunday night, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said whiles government continues to manage the spread of the virus and confirmed cases, government remains focused on applying strategic testing measures such as mass testing, contact tracing and enhanced surveillance which have so far proven to be effective.

“The bigger question is what optimally have to be put in place if students or some category of students are going to go back to school,” the minister said.

According to the minister, considering that testing does not prove immunity against the virus or act as a preventive measure, it is more important to focus on the group of population who are at risk of contracting the virus in testing.

The announcement includes the gradual reopening of schools starting from Monday, June 15, 2020.

  • Fuel prices to go up today

Consumers of petroleum products should be prepared to pay more for fuel at the pumps beginning today, June 1, 2020.

This follows an increment in the BOST Margin by Cabinet which was announced by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) over the weekend.

The BOST Margin has been increased from 3 pesewas to 6 pesewas for a litre of petroleum product.

Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), Duncan Amoah says fuel prices at the pumps will go up by between five and eight percent.

“Consumers will most likely have to pay more for fuel because world market prices, crude alone has done about 40%. With finished products such as gasoline, gas oil has also seen a sharp jump on the international market. It is quite certain that we will be doing between 5% and 8% [increase in fuel prices],” he said in an interview.

    Background

The BOST Margin has remained at 3 pesewas per litre since 2011.

In December 2019, it almost went up to 6 pesewas per litre but the decision was quickly reversed following intense pressure on government by opposition parties as well as CSOs such as the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC).

BOST MD appeals for nine pesewas increment

It will be recalled that Managing Director of BOST, Edwin Provencal earlier in March appealed to the government to increase the BOST Margin from three pesewas per litre to nine pesewas.

According to Provencal, the increment will help them maintain the deteriorating facilities at BOST, a strategic asset of the State.

Meanwhile, Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers, Duncan Amoah says apart from the increment in the BOST Margin, recent increment on the world market will also result in an 8 percent rise in prices at the pump.
