  • President Akufo-Addo eases some coronavirus restrictions

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced the easing of Coronavirus restrictions that would enable the partial reopening of some sectors of the economy from June 5, 2020.

However, restrictions placed over the past eleven weeks on certain public gatherings, including sporting events, nightclubs, cinemas, drinking spots, bars, beaches, festivals, funerals, political rallies and large religious gatherings such as crusades, pilgrimages and conventions have been stayed until July 31, 2020.

Also, the country’s air, land and sea border remains closed to human traffic until further notice. But Ghanaians stranded abroad would be evacuated back under “a special dispensation,” and will undergo the mandatory quarantine and safety protocols.

In a televised address Sunday to give an update on measures to curb the spread of the virus, the President outlined a phased process for safely easing restrictions in a select list of public gathering, based on the risk profile, socio-economic impact and the capacity of the country to enforce and respond to a spike in infections.

Those measures, he said, were the outcome of two weeks of consultations with relevant stakeholders, who agreed, based on the analysis of data, that a strategic, controlled, progressive, safe easing of restrictions to return the country to normalcy be rolled out.

Thus, as the first stage of easing the restrictions, religious services are to commence with 25 per cent attendance, and with a maximum of100 congregants worshipping at a time in church or at the mosque.

In addition, religious gatherings are not permitted to go beyond one hour, and congregants are required to maintain a mandatory one-metre rule of social distancing, wearing of mask at all material times and keeping a register of names and contact details of all worshippers.

Also, religious institutions that are desirous of opening their premises to their members, such as churches, mosques and others, must provide handwashing facilities, disinfect, fumigate and put in place the requisite logistics needed to guarantee safe opening and operation.

“They must work with the designated, regulatory bodies and undertake test runs of the protocols I have outlined. I would appeal to them, in the case of Christians, on the first Sunday of re-opening, i.e. 7th June, in the case of the Adventists, Saturday, 6th June, and in the case of Muslims, on the first Friday, i.e. ?al?t al-Jumu?ah on 5th June, to dedicate their worship to prayers for the nation in these challenging times,” the President said, saying that specific guidelines for safe reopening of churches and mosque would be outlined in detail by Monday, June 1, 2020.

President Akufo-Addo also indicated that schools would be reopened for final year junior high, senior high and university students to resume classes ahead of the conduct of their respective exit examinations.

He said final year university students are to report to their universities on June 15, 2020, whilst final year senior high school (SHS3) students, together with SHS 2 Gold Track students were to go back to school on June 22, 2020.

The President indicated that final-year junior high school students were to report back to school on June 29, 2020.

However, JHS class size is limited to 30 students, a maximum of 25 students for the SHS, while university lectures are to take place with half class sizes.

The President further announced that all final year students of educational and training institutions, which are being managed by Ministries other than the Education Ministry, were to return to school on June 15, 2020, to complete their exit examinations.

He was emphatic that before the opening of schools and universities, the Ministry of Education, and the heads of public and private educational institutions, should fumigate and disinfect their institutions, disclosing that the ministry would provide students, teachers, and non- teaching staff with re-usable face masks.

But all other educational facilities, private and public, for non-final year students, will remain closed till further notice.

The President announced also that private burials could continue to be perfomed but with a maximum of 100 persons.

And restaurants, providing seated services, could operate under appropriate social distancing arrangements and hygiene protocols.

“Individual, non-contact sports can go ahead. Conferences, workshops, weddings, and political activities, except rallies, can now take place, but with limited numbers not exceeding one hundred persons present, with the appropriate social distancing and hygiene protocols,” he stated.

President Akufo-Addo also exempted market places, workplaces, public transport, and constitutional and statutory bodies such as the Electoral Commission, the National Commission for Civic Education and the National Identification Authority from the restrictions.

Cautioning however that their activities must be conducted in accordance with social distancing and the necessary hygiene and safety protocols, he stated that regulatory agencies would undertake random checks to ensure conformity with the set rules, and the security services would be tasked to enforce them.

“Should any institution fail to adhere to these directives, its activity will be immediately prohibited, and relevant sanctions applied,” he added.

President Akufo-Addo called on Ghanaians to remain vigilant, respect the enhanced social hygiene and distancing protocols as the country is opened through a phased process.

“Fellow Ghanaians, now, more than ever, we must adhere to enhanced personal hygiene and social distancing protocols, wash our hands with soap under running water, refrain from shaking hands, and wear our masks whenever we leave our homes.

“It is said that with greater freedom comes greater responsibility…We cannot afford to let our guard down, and ruin the successes we have chalked over this period,” he said.

Prior to the re-opening of churches and mosques, they must disinfect and fumigate their premises and put in place appropriate logistics to guarantee the safety of their members.

The President said the decision to ease the restrictions was based on a consensus that emerged from stakeholder consultations to ensure a strategic, controlled, progressive and safe easing of restrictions to get lives and economy back to normal.

He explained: “As I stated in my May Day address, a month ago, I am now in a position to outline the roadmap for easing safely the restrictions.

“Ours is going to be a phased approach, involving a selected list of public gatherings, based on their risk profile, socio-economic impact, and, most importantly, our capacity to enforce and to respond, in the event of a flair up in our number of infections.

“So, fellow Ghanaians, with effect from Friday, 5th June, we will begin Stage One of the process of easing restrictions.

“An abridged format for religious services can commence. Twenty-five per cent (25%) attendance, with a maximum number of one hundred (100) congregants, can worship at a time in church or at the mosque, with a mandatory one-metre rule.

“They must work with the designated, regulatory bodies and undertake test runs of the protocols I have outlined.

“I would appeal to them, in the case of Christians, on the first Sunday of re-opening, i.e. 7th June, in the case of the Adventists, Saturday, 6th June, and in the case of Muslims, on the first Friday, i.e. Salat Al-Jumu’ah on 5th June, to dedicate their worship to prayers for the nation in these challenging times.”

  • Beverly Afaglo confesses to using toys to attain orgasm in marriage

Ghanaian actress Beverly Afaglo and wife of Eugene Baah of Praye music group fame has revealed that she uses sex toys to attain orgasm.

According to her, her husband is not able to give her the level of satisfaction she desires in bed, therefore, she uses sex toys as a back-up.

This is contained in a report sighted by YEN.com.gh on 3news.com

Afaglo reportedly made this confession in an interview with 3FM with Etornam Sey as host.

She explained that before marriage, “I was exposed, very exposed [to sex]”, but her husband did not know.

Now, after being married for five years, Afaglo said she does not remember the last time she had an orgasm during sex, and so she had to use the sex toys.

According to her, most men are lazy and would not invest enough time into foreplay before sex, making the whole encounter boring and lacking pleasure.

  • Why do we keep paying huge bonuses to Black Stars despite no trophies – Dr Baah Nuako

Former Management member of Kumasi Asante Kotoko and a former Sport Journalist, Dr Kwame Baah Nuako has questioned why we keep spending money on football despite the seeming lack of end product.

Dr Baah-Nuako who is the General Manager, sustainability at Ghana National Petroleum Corporation says Ghana must make radical changes to our sports funding going into the future by rewarding results and not mediocrity.

He says we should spend our monies on disciplines that produce results and stop this age old adage that football is the passion of the nation.

For instance he cited the amount of money and huge bonuses paid to players of the Black Stars the last two decades despite them having nothing to show for in terms of trophies.

“We should move away from a system we are rewarding mediocrity. We have a national soccer team that has won nothing for several despite spending millions of dollars but we keep on saying it the passion of the nation. It is the passion of the nation yes. However, we have to stop rewarding mediocrity” he told JOY SPORTS.

Many Ghanaians have questioned the huge bonuses handed to players of the Black Stars despite the team’s obvious failures to the detriment of other disciplines who are getting results.

Dr Baah Nuako is among the numerous persons who believe we are not getting value for money from the Black Stars and football with the mammoth spending.

“I believe that the funding amount we put into Ghana soccer every year should be a function of the results that they bring” he concluded.

  • Let’s not stampede President Akufo-Addo to lift restrictions- Assemblyman cautions

Mr Christopher Kudzo Galenkui, Assemblyman for Wumenu Electoral Area in the Adaklu District has cautioned the citizenry against ‘stampeding’ President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to lift restrictions meant to contain COVID-19 in the country.

“If we stampede the President and he lifts the ban now, there will be
calamity in the country,” Mr Galenkui said in an interview with the Ghana
    News Agency.

He said there was no need to rush in lifting the restrictions, when
COVID-19 positive cases were on the increase.

Mr Galenkui said what the country needed now was God’s divine intervention
and observance of all safety protocols.

Reverend Samuel Amegboe, Awudome Tsito Area Head of Assemblies of God
Church also said the country’s borders should remain closed to avoid the
influx of people from neighbouring countries some of whom could be
    potential carriers of the virus.

He, however said apart from re-opening of schools, the ban on other social
    gatherings should be lifted.

  • Your ‘intransigent behaviour’ doesn’t befit the EC – Kwesi Pratt rebukes commissioners

Kwesi Pratt has cautioned the Commissioners of Ghana’s electoral management body to watch how they talk to opposition political parties in the country.

According to Kwesi Pratt, the Electoral Commission has been using unsavoury words on the parties for being against their decision to compile a new voters’ register.

He told host Kwami Sefa Kayi that the opposition parties have been branded as “nation wreckers” which, to him, doesn’t reflect the neutrality of the Commission.

“How can you then supervise a politically neutral process if you believe some political parties are nation wreckers?” he asked.

He advised the Commissioners to ”watch their tongue when talking”, adding that their responses on the new voters’ register feed into the notion that they want to rig the 2020 elections.

“If you don’t choose your words carefully, you strengthen that impression even though it may not be true. If you’re a Commissioner and you talk publicly against a political party, that is the impression you’re likely to create and that’s a problem. It’s a major issue,” he stressed.

He also called on the election management body to stop portraying a headstrong attitude towards the opposers of a new voters’ register.

“That intransigent attitude of them not willing to listen to any person is not fitting for the Electoral Commission. An Electoral Commission must necessarily build consensus,” he added.

  • 25 US cities under curfew over violent “George Floyd protest”

Protests over the death of George Floyd raged from coast to coast — with crowds breaking curfew in major cities on another night of fury and frustrations.

Fires burned and and tear gas canisters flew in Minneapolis. In Seattle, smoke filled the air as police in riot gear lined the streets. And in Philadelphia, officers chased a group of people down the streets for violating curfew.

The National Guard dispatched to Washington, DC, to assist police handling protests around the White House, authorities said.

At least 25 cities have imposed curfews and numerous states activated National Guard forces in anticipation of another night of protests, sparked in part by the death of Floyd– who was unarmed and handcuffed — while in Minneapolis police custody.

The former officer seen in a video kneeling on Floyd’s neck was arrested and charged. Protesters are demanding the arrest of three other officers at the scene.

    Latest developments

    • City curfews: A curfew is underway in cities like Atlanta, Philadelphia and Milwaukee until Sunday morning. Mayors in cities like Denver, Cincinnati, Louisville and Salt Lake City imposed evening curfews that will expire Monday morning.

    • National Guard: At least six states and the District of Columbia have either activated or requested assistance from the National Guard, including Minnesota, Georgia, Ohio, Colorado, Denver and Kentucky.

    • 21-year-old shot: A young man was killed Friday night in downtown Detroit where protests were taking place. Police had previously said the victim was 19 and that they could not confirm whether the victim was part of the protests.

    • Clashes and arrests: More than 500 people were arrested in Friday night’s protests in Los Angeles, police said. New York City police have made more than 200 arrests connected to protests, and more than a dozen officers have been seriously hurt, according to a senior NYPD source. In Houston, nearly 200 people were arrested and most will be charged with obstructing a roadway, police said.

    • Pleas for peace: In Dallas, Mayor Eric Johnson implored people destroying property to stop. In Portland, Oregon, police dispersed protesters with tear gas, saying there was extensive property damage. “Enough,” Mayor Ted Wheeler tweeted.

  • South Africa teachers’ union urges staff to defy return-to-work order

Union says schools do not have the protective gear to keep educators and pupils safe when the economy reopens on Monday.

South African teachers’ unions and governing associations urged their staff on Friday to defy a government order to return to school next week, saying schools did not yet have personal protective equipment (PPE) to keep educators and pupils safe.

Africa’s most industrialized state will reopen its economy on June 1, after two months of lockdown that deepened a recession and left millions jobless. President Cyril Ramaphosa imposed the lockdown to prevent a COVID-19 epidemic on the kind of scale that has devastated Western nations.

The country has had more than 27,000 confirmed cases but only 577 deaths from COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said last week that schools would reopen, but only for grades 7 and 12, the last years of primary and secondary school, respectively.

“The education system … is not ready for the reopening of schools. If the PPE (protective equipment such as masks and hand sanitiser) have not been delivered by now, chances are slim that all schools will have them on Monday,” the joint statement said.

“We therefore call on all schools … not to reopen until the non-negotiables have been delivered.”

Motshekga has urged the teachers’ unions not to obstruct those who want to go back to school.

On Monday, South Africa’s economy will mostly return to full capacity, as it moves to “level three” lockdown, lifting a curfew, a restriction on outdoor exercise and a ban on alcohol sales in addition to partly reopening schools.

Many of South Africa’s government schools are in poor shape, especially in rural areas, and analysts say a quarter of them have no running water – making handwashing nearly impossible.

South Africa’s state-run Human Rights Commission on Friday also urged the government to reconsider its decision to start opening schools until they are better prepared.

  • Akinwumi Adesina: Why the US is targeting a flamboyant Nigerian banker

The US and the African Development Bank have fallen out over allegations of corruption against the bank’s Nigerian head, writes former BBC Africa Business editor Larry Madowo.

Akinwumi Adesina is a sharp dresser known for his expensive tailored suits, immaculate white shirts and an endless supply of colourful bow ties.

But the clean public persona of the 60-year-old president of the African Development Bank (AfDB) is now being questioned after a string of corruption and abuse of office allegations from his own staff spilled into the open. Mr Adesina has denied all the allegations.

The board of governors of the 55-year-old institution met on Tuesday to discuss whether to bring in an outside investigator into the allegations concerning the Nigerian’s conduct just days after the US rejected an initial inquiry that cleared him.

The prospects of an independent probe comes only three months before he was expected to be re-elected unopposed at its annual general meeting in August.

    US at odds with Africa

The 20-point allegations of “impunity and bad governance” from unnamed employees have exposed a rift between Mr Adesina and ordinary staff.

The “Group of Concerned Staff Members of the AfDB” claimed that Mr Adesina has used the bank’s resources for self-promotion and personal gain while also paying out huge but undeserved severance packages to staff who resigned mysteriously, and favouring his fellow Nigerians.

US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin personally signed a letter to the board rejecting an internal investigation that cleared Mr Adesina.

“Mnuchin’s move is significant because it has now cast a limelight on governance issues and on [the] importance of an independent investigation to uphold the integrity of the AfDB,” said Barbara Barungi, the bank’s former lead economist on Nigeria. “There are very few people that were willing to stick their necks out.”

Besides the core 54 African countries, the US is one of the 27 non-regional members of the AfDB and its second largest shareholder.

“I think AfDB is Africa’s most valuable institution,” said one insider who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“But what you have now is the biggest paymaster, the US, in a stand-off against the Africans. If you read Mnuchin’s letter carefully, it has put the bank on notice.”

The BBC has obtained the original whistleblowers’ email from January 2020, sent to two executive directors of the bank, Yano Takuji (Japanese) and Steven Dowd (American), and the British director for its Integrity and Anti-Corruption Department Alan Bacarese.

In an April update circulated to a wider pool of senior managers, the whistleblowers said the Ethics Committee headed by Mr Takuji failed to examine their concerns.

The committee later carried out an investigation and declared that Mr Adesina was “totally exonerated of all allegations made against him” and recommended that the board of governors adopt its conclusions.

In early May, the board’s chair – Ivorian Planning Minister Nialé Kaba – wrote to shareholders that the African finance ministers who supervise the bank’s management intended to clear Mr Adesina.

“We fear that the wholesale dismissal of all allegations without appropriate investigation will tarnish the reputation of this institution as one that does not uphold high standards of ethics and governance,” Mr Mnuchin wrote back.

“Therefore, the United States cannot support dismissing the allegations at this stage,” he added.

Mr Kaba said in a statement that a decision had not been made about Mr Adesina and he remained in office.

“The bureau, which I chair, wishes to reassure the public that it is seized with the matter and it is treating it with the utmost seriousness that it deserves,” he said.

    ‘Trumped up allegations’

The whistleblowers have accused Mr Adesina of major conflicts of interest in his dealings with current and former employees, unethical conduct and preferential treatment.

  • Ghanaians now occupy top positions in mining sector

Most top positions in the mining sector are now being occupied by Ghanaians, President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Eric Asubonteng, has said.

He noted that out of the total number of direct mine employees, only 1.2 per cent are expatriates while the overwhelming majority remain Ghanaian nationals.

“Let me state emphatically that gone are the days when expatriates occupied all the key management roles on mine sites. Today, highly skilled Ghanaian mining professionals are occupying key positions at all levels of our industry, much to the satisfaction of our now actively discerning investors and stakeholders.”

“Interestingly, Ghanaian mining professionals are in high demand on the global market, as many of our colleagues have taken up management roles as expatriates, in both developed and emerging mining destinations across the globe,” he added.

The mining sector employed 1,790 more people in 2019 increasing the total workforce engaged directly by mining companies to 11,899 compared to 10,109 in 2018, according to the 2019 Annual report of the Chamber of Mines released today, Friday, 29 May 2020.

  • Mining employed 1,790 people in 2019 Chamber of Mines

The mining sector employed 1,790 more people in 2019, increasing the total workforce engaged directly by mining companies to 11,899 compared to 10,109 in 2018.

This was contained in the 2019 Annual report of the Chamber of Mines released today, Friday, 29 May 2020.

According to the President of the Chamber, Eric Asubonteng, the 18 percent growth in employment was primarily due to additional recruitments at Newmont’s Ahafo Mine, Asanko Gold Ghana Ltd, Golden Star Wassa Ltd and the redeveloped AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine.

He noted that out of the total number of direct mine employees, only 1.2 percent are expatriates while the overwhelming majority remain Ghanaian nationals.

Mr Asubonteng noted that although the Chamber is proud of the increase in direct jobs, it is important to recognise that direct jobs created by large-scale mining are but a fraction of the multiplier effect of mining operations on employment.

The value chain of mining, according to him, creates a huge pool of opportunities that ensure that support service providers such as input suppliers, food producers and vendors as well as social entrepreneurs are able to take advantage of the inherent opportunities to generate sustainable employment.

He emphasised on the importance of focusing on a well-structured small-scale mining sector for more job creation.

“We are all aware that thousands of our brothers and sisters are engaged in illegal mining financed by persons who are able to afford heavy machinery that are posing a major risk to our environment. If properly structured, small-scale mining could create many more decent jobs for the teeming youth of our dear nation, who would have the added benefits of pension contribution and plan for their future. It also has the potential to open up a pool of revenue generation streams for the state, if modelled in a worker-friendly manner,” Mr Asubonteng stressed.

According to him, Addi Self and Natty Lee called a woman in America to complain to her that Shatta Wale did not pay them after shows and that if he was in America, he would have been shot.

Infuriated by the actions of the militants, he threatened to beat Addi Self if he comes on social media to reply his messages, calling him ungrateful after forgetting all he, Shatta Wale did for the Militants.

Meanwhile, in an earlier interview with Delay, when she asked the Militants if they were being paid, they replied that their only focus was the production of the music, and not money.

She further warned them, especially Addi Self that from his reply, he will be the first person to betray Shatta Wale when things start flourishing and they are not being paid what they deserve.

  • Businesses in Western Region commend government for interventions

The business community in the Western Region has commended the Government for implementing measures targeted at stimulating economic growth in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Among the key measures are the establishment of a COVID-19 Alleviation Programme and the Business Support Scheme for businesses negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic to facilitate economic recovery.

In separate interviews with the Ghana News Agency, leaders of some key businesses commended the Government for implementing some tax relief measures to mitigate impact.

These include extending the due dates for filing of tax returns from four months to six months and the grant of waiver of penalties on principal tax liabilities owed by taxpayers who redeem their outstanding liabilities by June 30, 2020.

Businesses have also been granted an automatic two months extension for filing tax returns, which normally was due four months after end of their financial year.

Mr Barry Bruce Antwi, the Chief Executive Officer of Smart Trust Accounting Consultancy, said the intervention was timely and urged business owners to provide accurate information to qualify for the support scheme.

He expressed the optimism that the package would go a long way to cushion businesses in dire need of sustaining their activities to avert job losses.

Mr Antwi called on the Government to put in place stringent measures to help recover every money given, recalling that over the years monies given to businesses by government had been woefully managed leading to loses and low recovery rate.

He said the COVID-19 Alleviation Programme was to protect households and livelihoods, support micro, small and medium-sized businesses, minimise job losses and source additional funding for promotion of industries to expand output for domestic consumption and exports.

He called on businesses to undertake operational risk assessment and use the money judiciously to be able to make a profit and payback without defaulting adding that often time business owners went for loans only to diversify them for other investments.

Mr Bernard Kwarteng, an importer, noted that the waiver of the penalties would provide a window for taxpayers having outstanding tax obligations to avoid penalty charges.

He said though the tax measures were temporary as the COVID-19 situation remained fluid, more far-reaching tax measures should be introduced in future to stimulate economic activities, especially in the worst affected industries.

Mr Kwarteng said the recent announcement by the Ghana Revenue Authority to grant tax waivers for companies donating to the COVID-19 Fund should encourage businesses and individuals alike to support the Government in the fight against the pandemic.

  • African traditional religion practitioners plead for public holiday

A coalition of African traditional religion practitioners in the country, has called on government to institute a public holiday in honour of the faith, just as has been done to Christians and Muslims.

According to the group, led by New Gavriel Enlightenment Traditional Church, traditional religion deserves such consideration since it was recognised by the 1992 Constitution.

Article 21(a) and (c) of the 1992 Constitution provides respectively that “all persons shall have the right to: freedom of thought, conscience and belief, which shall include academic freedom and [the] freedom to practice any religion and to manifest such practice”.

This according to the founder and leader of the Church, Torgbui Anaglasi required the state to give equal recognition to all faiths including traditional religion.

Torgbui Anaglasi, made the appeal at a press briefing held at Somanya in the Eastern Region on Wednesday.

He explained that on July 9 and 10 every year, deities all over the world embarked on a journey to the spiritual realm to account for their deed to the Supreme Being as a result; it would be the ideal period for the practitioners to showcase their deities.

“Deities all the over the world embark on a journey to the spiritual realm to render accounts to the Supreme Being upon which they are further fortified to continue saving human lives as such must be celebrated after a successful journey” he added.

The day, he explained if instituted, would bring practitioners together to impact the new generation the true importance of traditional practices and customs, which are sacred and devoid of criminal activities.

Torgbui Anaglasi expressed regret that some practitioners or fetish priests were engaging in acts that dragged the name of the religion into disrepute.

He said “no true practitioner or fetish priest must shed or pour human blood; this cannot be accepted as true practice of tradition. As fetish priests we are to heal with herbs and spirit and to protect lives, not to take lives.”

Torgbui Anaglasi advised practitioners not to consider money more than human life, and urged them to help expose those destroying the noble and humble practice of the religion.

He advocated stiffer punishment for people engaging in criminal activities in the name of the African traditional religion, and appealed to the public to “refrain from lumping all traditional practices as evil and also stop casting a slur on their families as they may end up accusing the wrong people .”

He stressed “we have the Atigali, Nana Tongo, Kpakpaklidi, Azor, Kwaku, Alafia, Brekudi and many more with each knowing how to practice and worship, and do not kill human beings”,

Torgbui Anaglasi cautioned the public against the get rich quick attitude in order not to fall prey to swindlers and magicians who parade as fetish priests.

He urged the National Communication Authority to promulgate a law to ban money doubling scenes being displayed on television stations adding “We are calling on managers and owners of media houses not to allow money to rule their conscience but be guided by patriotism, love for fellow human and most likely the vulnerable,” he added.

Torgbui Anaglasi said a team would be dispatched to Kyebi to plead with the Over Lord of the Akyem Traditional Area, Okyehene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, to reconsider his decision to close down all shrines under his jurisdiction.

He, however, said “the Okyehene is right in taking that decision, but we have to plead for him to temper justice with mercy because he may or would end up throwing all of us including the good ones away”.

  • Payboy ends contract with Menzgold over arrest of officials

Following the arrest of some of its officials on Wednesday, May 27, 2020, Payboy Company Limited says it has terminated its agreement with Menzgold to facilitate the payment of its customers.

In a statement, the management of Payboy said “We have indicated to Menzgold Ghana Company Limited our decision to opt out of the ‘Payment Facilitation Agreement’ we signed on the 7th February, 2020. Amongst others, we indicated that we would NOT admit any Menzgold Customer at our premises on the basis of negotiating and facilitating mutually acceptable payment mode or manner for the indebted client.”

On Friday, the Economic and Organised Crime Unit announced it had arrested some officials of Payboy Company Limited indicating that the company was operating without the requisite licenses from either the Bank of Ghana or the Securities and Exchanges Commission.

Menzgold said in a statement at the time that the company will negotiate and facilitate the payment of the investment of its customers whose investments are still locked up.

  • Ghana looks up to media for violent-free election 2020 Police Commander

Superintendent Stephen Tenkorang, the Bono Regional Commander of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) says the nation looks up to the media to uphold professional standards to ensure a peaceful Election 2020.

He emphasised the Police and other security services had the capacity and were determined to create a peaceful atmosphere for the smooth conduct of the Election 2020, devoid of intimidation and hooliganism.

But, he expressed the fear that unprofessional media work would have the potential to heighten tension, charged the atmosphere, and cause election violence.

Interacting with selected News Editors at a forum held at Abesim, near Sunyani, Supt. Tenkorang said election violence was unacceptable and the existing Police-media relationship ought to be strengthened to help easily identify and tackle once and for all factors that contributed to election-related violence.

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) organised the forum, as part of a 14-month project the Association is implementing with support from STAR-Ghana Foundation.

Titled “No to political vigilantism and Electoral Violence in Ghana”, the project aimed at contributing to national discourse in disbanding political vigilantism and eliminating electoral violence in Ghana.

It further seeks to enhance the capacity of media in conflict-sensitive reporting, given its crucial role as one of the key gatekeepers in election management and reportage in Ghana.

Supt. Tenkorang indicated that the Bono Region had no election hotspots, but few flashpoints had been identified, and the Police would require media collaboration to ensure that tensions were not heightened in those flashpoints at the heat of the electioneering.

He appealed to the leadership of the GJA to help flush out miscreants and unprofessional media practitioners who had invaded the media fraternity and soiling the image of the profession.

Dr. Roland Affail Monney, the President of the GJA indicated Journalists also had their political parties of choice but cautioned them not to allow their voting pattern to affect their professional work and standards.

He emphasised that journalism and politics drove development, and the media must ensure that they avoid tendencies that could scale-up tensions in the political landscape by ensuring that they sieve stories and design useful programmes that would build society.

“We have professional, ethical, and godly responsibility to save Ghana from nation wreckers because political parties are like Suarez, and they want to score goals through fair or foul means”, he said.

“Our interest as journalists must not be who wins Election 2020, but our interest must be on how the general election would be free, fair, credible and peaceful”, the GJA President stated.

Dr. John Ekow Otoo, the Deputy Director, Public Health at the Bono Regional Health Directorate commended the GJA and the local media for their collaboration with the GHS so far in helping to stem the spread of the COVID-19 in the region.

He said because COVID-19 was novel, signs, symptoms, and mode of transmission kept on changing and called on the media to intensify public education so that the frequent use of sanitizers, handwashing with soap under running water, and social distancing protocols would not relapse.

Dr. Otoo said the region had scale-up precautionary measures and heightened surveillance at the various borders to stem the spread of the virus disease.

  • Floodwaters wash away vehicle into drain in Ho

A late Thursday afternoon rainstorm plunged a commercial vehicle into a drain in Ho.

The flood also brought tree logs onto the road causing vehicular traffic for hours at the Amegashie Bridge, near the Ho Central market.

The vehicle, with four occupants from Hohoe was washed off the bridge by a strong water current between 1400 and 1600 hours.

Some men in the community who witnessed the incident however braced the storm and rescued the occupants in the vehicle including two women.

Personnel of the Ghana National Ambulance Service responded promptly to send the victims, some with minor injuries, to the Ho Municipal Hospital where they were treated and discharged.

Mary, a 21-year-old woman who was onboard the vehicle with registration number GR 2488 14, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that they had cautioned the driver against using the flooded bridge.

She said the vehicle was partly flooded, and that they used an opened door of the vehicle to escape.

Personnel from the Police, the National Fire Service, and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) rushed to the scene for a joint rescue operation following distress calls.

Residents and business owners in the area told GNA the over 60-year-old bridge has been a trouble spot during rainy seasons.

The GNA was told that locals choked the culverts with different kinds of waste, causing overflowing water to flood the low-lying areas cutting off access to the Ho Central Market.

The storm also fell some trees at the Ho SNNIT Flats, causing a three-hour diversion of heavy traffic heading to and from areas including the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS).

]Heavy rains have made access to UHAS main campus extremely difficult with sections of the road unworthy for vehicular traffic.

The rainstorm also caused flooding on the Ho Polyclinic bridge with challenges for motorists and other road users.

  • Teenage pregnancy, incest, defilement on the rise in Sekondi-Takoradi

Ms Constance Baidoo, Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Director for the Department of Social Welfare has bemoaned the alarming increasing cases of incest and defilement in peri-urban communities of the Metropolis.

Ms. Baidoo who made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency explained that victims of this incestuous act were mostly girls aged between 15-18 years who are often coerced into sex, not just once but on several occasions.

She indicated that many cases were from separated marriages and broken homes.

According to her, the trauma and the threats alone discouraged the victims from speaking about it and quite often people prejudge and call them names such as spoilt kids and others.

She disclosed that two of such cases were investigated by the department last year while many of them were referred to her outfit by the CHRAJ and other allied agencies.

Ms. Baido further explained when her outfit receives such reports, they usually remove the children from the threat of abuse before investigations commence. “In such circumstances, custody is granted, preferably to a responsible relative, she added.

While expressing her dissatisfaction over the development, she expressed hope that her outfit would come up with practical steps to tackle the situation and also admonished parents and all stakeholders to join hands in educating young girls about the dangers of teenage pregnancy.

For her part, Madam Afua Yankson, Western Regional Deputy Chief Investigator of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) bemoaned the situation where some parents encouraged or forced their teenage daughters into marriages without recourse to their welfare and the pregnancy.

She called for the need for experts and educationists to gather feedback to develop a roadmap to check the rate at which young girls were forced out of school as a result of teenage pregnancy.

She called for a concerted effort to tackle the alarming rate of teenage pregnancies in Ghana as experts and government officials have been deliberating on ways to achieve the sustainable development goals through improved access to reproductive health and rights.

  • Ghanaians apprehensive ahead of Presidential coronavirus update

A section of the public on Friday expressed apprehension as the country awaits update on the measures to contain and or live with the COVID-19 by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Sunday May 31.

Some residents at Madina and Adentan catchment areas were uneasy about the possible lifting of the restrictions stressing that June should be used as transitional period towards a general lifting in July whilst others were eager for the lifting especially on church activities.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Ms Lovia Agboli, a food vendor at Adenta said the first sunday after a possible lifting of restrictions would be used as an observation moment at her church.

“If I noticed that, the leadership has put in place measures to adhere to the COVID-19 protocols then I will continue but if not, I will not,” she said.

She said the issue of whether to go to church or not depends on the safety measures which would be put in place, “we need to tread cautiously, we must be secured in the house of God, we have our human roles to play for safety but if we fail it would seriously affect our fight against the spread of COVID-19”.

Nana Kofi Boateng, a graphic designer at Madina said because of his role as a youth president of his local assembly, he would act on the directions of the Church Board especially to help them in putting down effective measures to guarantee the safety of members.

He said the youth would cooperate with the leadership of the church on whatever measures, especially on the observance of the social distancing protocols and other preventive directives.

Ms Ekua Ninson, a petty trader said she would go to her chapel once restrictions were lifted because the market square was even more populous and largely without any safety protocols than what may pertain at church but markets are still operating.

She said: “I do not believe that the Church premises can be a major place for the spread of the virus because when you walk through town, you see a lot of people not observing the safety protocols”.

Ms Mavis Eshun, a fashion design student said she would not go to church immediately but wait to hear if the protocols would be observed and also because “I am a type that would want to hug my friends.

“I will like to wait for a while before going to church to be sure that all protocols are guaranteed”.

Ms Eshun said I will go only if we observe social distancing and the use of veronica buckets with soap for handwashing under running water, and the provision of sanitizers to regularly sanitize our hands.

Ms Abigail Zatey, a guest house receptionist said she would go to church upon the announcement of the removal of restrictions but would be cautious to ensure that the measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 were appropriately in force.

Others interviewed called on the church leadership to assure the congregation that safety measures of COVID-19 would be observed to ensure that figures of infected persons were not increased upon the removal of the restrictions on social gathering.

As part of measures to control the spread of COVID-19 in the country President Akufo-Addo announced earlier in March the restriction on social gathering across the country.

  • Whether or not we will register is immaterial Peter Otokunor

Some political pundits have asked communication members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) if they will take part in the new Voters registration exercise following their opposition.

The NDC has sworn to resist the EC’s decision to compile a new voters register despite several reasons given by the Commission.

Many have wondered if they will take part in the exercise which has now been scheduled for June ending.

Replying critics Peter Otokunor, Deputy General Secretary of the NDC who was speaking on Neat FM’s Me Man Nti programme said “whether the NDC will take part in the exercise or not is immaterial”

  • EC is not a ‘god’; Let them not think they have unfettered powers – Kwesi Pratt

Seasoned Journalist, Kwesi Pratt has chastised the Electoral Commission over their decision to compile a new voters’ register despite oppositions from Civil Society Groups, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other political actors in the country.

To him, the country’s electoral body is putting on airs of a “god”, acting as if it has “unfettered powers”.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has slated the end of June to commence the registration exercise to compile the new register.

But the NDC has dragged the EC to the Supreme Court seeking an order for the Commission to rescind its decision to use only the Ghana card and passport for the exercise, and has also challenged the compilation of the new voters’ register.

The party is praying the court to direct the EC to include ”all existing voter identification cards duly issued by the 2nd Defendant (EC) as one of the documents serving as proof of identification for registration as a voter for the purposes of public elections”.

The NDC also seeks a declaration on whether the EC “can only revise the existing register of voters, and lacks the power to prepare a fresh register of voters, for the conduct of the December 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections”.

Bernard Mornah, a leader of the Inter-Party Resistance Against New Voters’ Register (IPRAN), has also threatened to disrupt the registration exercise should the EC fail to address their grievances.

The electoral body is however unfazed by the threats and opposition to their decision, and has announced measures to kickstart the registration exercise in June irrespective of these agitations.

Addressing the brouhaha about the new voters’ register on Peace FM, Kwesi Pratt stated that the EC’s adamant behaviour is indicative of the Commission’s lack of the neutrality.

According to him, the Commission needs to be reminded that their mandate as the election management body was given to them by Ghanaians, although set up within the confines of the constitution and so they have to pay a listening ear to all parties.

”The Electoral Commission is enjoined by Article 45 to work within the limits of the law…The court can stop the Electoral Commission…The Electoral Commission doesn’t have unfettered powers,”, he challenged.

Again, he stressed on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ that ”the Electoral Commission is not a god. It’s a constitutional institution that we, Ghanaians, have allowed to be set up. We have accepted the establishment of the Electoral Commission. So, it is the duty of the Electoral Commission to listen to Ghanaians and cannot do whatever they like. They are not allowed. They’re bound by law. They’re bound by the constitution and others to do what is proper”.
