  • Nigeria governor’s wife in Twitter storm over killings

The wife of Nigeria’s Kaduna state governor is under criticism for not using her influence to speak out against last week killings in the southern part of the state.

Hadiza Isma el-Rufai tweeted that although she was married to the governor, Nasiru el-Rufai, she had taken no oath of office and was not a “first lady”.

About 14 people were killed by gunmen in a village in the state last week – the latest of a series of attacks that have left dozens dead this year.

The topic began trending on Twitter in Nigeria on Wednesday when the governor’s wife celebrated the fact that she now had 80,000 followers.

She was then questioned by some about why she did not use her influence on Twitter to call for an end to the killings.

She replied with a tweet that has been shared widely, saying she uses the social media platform for “language, humour and other light-hearted issues”.

“I don’t tweet about serious matters like governance and politics. Though I’m married to a governor I’m not part of government.”

  • John Mahama’s running mate allegedly says no to him

Mahama’s Running Mate Nominee Says No to Mahama and the NDC

The leader of the National Democratic Congress John Dramani Mahama is alleged struggling to have a running mate who will deputise as his Vice President if voted to power come December 7.

John Dramani Mahama who served as President of Ghana from 24 July 2012 to 7 January 2017 following the death of his former boss and President Atta Mills is struggling to have a Running Mate of his choice according to Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko a flamboyant NPP man and a Senior Partner of Africa Legal Associates according to his Facebook profile.

Gabby last night threw in a delicate gossip which states how the former President John Mahama is struggling to have a Running Mate of his own choosing because the one he wanted has turned down the offer and not only did he turned it down indirectly but did it directly when the former president who is the flag bearer for the opposition party NDC paid the said individual a curtsey call. “It must be pretty frustrating when your choice of running mate turns you flat down… especially after you have approached him personally with your offer. Uneasy lies the head that wears a thorny crown.” Gabby’s post entails.

Though it hasn’t been confirmed as truth but a man of Gabby’s calibre will never risk telling a fake gossip.

John Mahama who served as Vice President of Ghana from January 2009 to July 2012, and took office as President on 24 July 2012 following the death of his predecessor, John Atta Mills is running for power for his second term as President. The Ghanaian constitution makes it possible for him run for a second term and if he succeeds will become the longest serving elected President of Ghana following their path of democracy starting 1992.

Gabby’s Facebook friends then added fuel to the fire when their comments suggested it was indeed the former President the post was talking about.

  • New voters’ register: EC targets 16 million Ghanaians

The Electoral Commission has estimated to register sixteen (16) million eligible Ghanaian electorates onto the new voters’ register.

The Commission, during an IPAC meeting on Wednesday, May 27, 2020, announced the registration exercise will begin in June this year.

Persons in the age brackets of 18 years and above are expected to participate in the exercise.

Legal documents for the registration exercise are the Ghana card and passport but those without these two requirements can register the names by the help of guarantors.

The EC’s decision to compile a new voters’ register has however been met by opposition from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and members of the Inter-Party Resistance Against New Voter Register [IPRAN] who claim the Commission’s is plotting to disenfranchise about 11 million eligible Ghanaians.

The NDC has also accused the EC saying it seeks to rig the December elections for the governing New Patriotic Party and the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

But speaking in an interview with host Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s flagship programme ‘Kokrokoo’, a Deputy Chairman of the EC, Dr. Bossman Asare has debunked that the Commission wants to deprive some Ghanaians of their voting right.

According to him, the measures put in place by the EC will not exclude any eligible voter in the nation.

He echoed that the electorates without the Ghana card or passport have the option of someone guaranteeing for them to register their names and so no person will be left out of the registration exercise.

The EC Chairman also revealed that the Commission is approximating 16 million names to get into the new voters’ register, contrary to the claims that 11 million people won’t get the opportunity to register.

”We’re looking at between fifteen to sixteen million. And when you take into account the machines we’re using, we can register between six hundred to eight hundred thousand people”.

Dr. Bossman Asare further advised the attendees not to be entrapped by the notion that, due to the Coronavirus outbreak, they will be risking their lives going to the various registration centres.

“We have consulted with health experts, the national COVID team and the Ghana Health Service among others. The measures we are putting in place are scientific and we expect every person to abide by them. Make sure to wear face mask when going to the registration centres. We will also check your temperatures, provide water and soap for the washing of hands and hand sanitizers,” he stated.

He added “the registration is not a one-day event. We are using six days” and so should a person go to a centre and the numbers are almost crammed up, he or she can register on a different day.

  • The Minneapolis police officer who knelt on George Floyd’s neck had 18 previous complaints against him, police department says

The former Minneapolis police officer seen in a video with his knee on George Floyd’s neck had 18 prior complaints filed against him with the Minneapolis Police Department’s Internal Affairs, according to the police department.

It’s unclear what the internal affairs complaints against the officer, Derek Chauvin, were for. MPD did not provide additional details.
Chauvin was fired this week, along with three other MPD officers who were present when Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck. Police have said they were responding to an alleged forgery at a corner store.
Floyd, a 46-year-old black man who was unarmed and handcuffed, pleaded that he could not breathe. He was soon after declared dead at a nearby hospital, according to authorities.
Floyd’s death and video of the incident have sparked widespread anger, destructive protests and calls for the officers involved to face criminal charges.
Only two of the 18 complaints against Chauvin were “closed with discipline,” according to a MPD internal affairs public summary. In both cases, the “discipline issued” column indicated that a letter of reprimand had been issued in response.
Chauvin was not the only officer on the scene that day with a history of complaints against him.
Former officer Tou Thao had six complaints filed with internal affairs, one of which was still open, according to the public summary released Thursday. The other five complaints had been closed without discipline.
The two other officers involved had no complaints filed against them, per MPD internal affairs.
CNN has reached out to attorneys representing the officers for comment.

One officer was the subject of a lawsuit

Thao was also part of a 2017 excessive force lawsuit that was settled by the city of Minneapolis, according to a settlement obtained by CNN and an attorney for the plaintiff in the case.
The lawsuit was brought by Lamar Ferguson, who claimed in the suit that Thao and another officer subjected him to “cruel and unusual” punishment when they arrested him in October 2014.
According to the lawsuit, the officers used “unreasonable force,” including “punches, kicks and knees to the face and body while Ferguson was defenseless and handcuffed.” As a result, Ferguson suffered broken teeth, bruising and trauma, the lawsuit says.
The city would go on to pay Ferguson and his attorney $25,000 to settle the lawsuit on December 11, 2017.
Both the city and the officers denied liability in the settlement, according to a 2017 statement from the city of Minneapolis.
According to the lawsuit, Ferguson was walking home from his grandmother’s house with his pregnant girlfriend on October 7, 2014, when they were approached by a Minneapolis police car with Thao and another office inside.
The lawsuit claims the officers handcuffed Ferguson despite having no probable cause to believe he had committed a crime.
The officers took Ferguson’s wallet and ID and the second officer ran the ID through the National Crime Information Center, a federal database, but no warrant showed up in the system, the lawsuit said.
Despite this, the second officer “falsely stated that there was a warrant out for Plaintiff’s arrest,” the lawsuit states. The officer questioned Ferguson about a previous incident involving people who the officer believed were Ferguson’s family members, but Ferguson “said he had no information to tell the officers.”
A physical altercation broke out, according to the lawsuit, then Thao threw Ferguson to the ground and began hitting him. Thao allegedly lifted Ferguson’s head up by grabbing the back of Ferguson’s hoodie as the other officer allegedly kicked him in the mouth.
Ferguson was taken to a hospital, but allegedly the officers “expressed impatience with medical staff caring” for Ferguson. When he was discharged, the officers allegedly threw his discharge papers — including prescription painkillers — in the garbage as they left the hospital, the lawsuit states.

The court heard that Mr Ngumi sought a secret meeting with the businesswoman to review her tax arrears ahead of a visit to her firm by KRA auditors. The meeting was scheduled to be held just a few days before the KRA field team was expected at her company for a final audit review.

Ms Wanjiku reported the matter to EACC detectives who accompanied her to the private meeting held at the Southern Sun Hotel in Westlands, Nairobi.

On March 11, 2014, unknown to the accused, the officers visited the hotel earlier, sat at a distance and observed the two as they had their conversation, also recorded on a gadget that Ms Wanjiku had been given by the EACC officers.

Mr Ngumi told Ms Wanjiku to have the money converted into dollars as one of the measures to avoid raising suspicion and for ease of movement.

While two other meetings had been previously held at Boulevard Hotel, it is this specific meeting that saw the accused handed an envelope with genuine $1,100 and fake $148,900.

In his defence, Mr Ngumi claimed that the matter was fabricated and denied the charges. His lawyer cited the fact that the recording that was presented in court as evidence did not show their faces, arguing that there was confusion in the recording given that the accused and the complainant shared the same last name, Ngumi.

But Ms Wanjiku, while arguing that her company had no tax arrears, told the court that the indepth audit was not concluded because her firm was never served with the final report by the taxman after it disputed the initial findings.

  • ‘Jihadists target’ Mali farmers in deadly raids

There are reports from Mali that 27 civilians have been killed during three attacks on villages which are home to people from the Dogon ethnic group.

Local officials believed the three attacks, between Tuesday night and Wednesday evening, had been carried out by Islamist militants, who often say they are defending Fulani herders against rival Dogon farmers.

As Islamist militant violence has spread from the north of Mali to the centre of the country, this has fuelled reprisal killings between herding and farming communities.

The army has in recent years been criticised by rights groups and residents for failing to protect civilians in central Mali.

  • Call to increase fight against coronavirus in Africa

The head of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has called for a greater effort to counter coronavirus at a time when there is evidence it is increasingly being spread within the community in countries across the continent.

John Nkengasong said it was time to test people with flu-like symptoms and to increase measures like social distancing, the wearing of masks and hand washing.

So far the virus has multiplied more slowly in Africa than in Asia or Europe.

Experts believe this could be partly due to Africa’s young population.

However predictions are difficult to make on a continent where there have now been around 120,000 cases, from a population of more than one billion.

  • UT Bank case: Give Amoabeng all documents Court to AG

The Attorney General has been asked by the court to give all the evidence it intends to rely on in the case against the founder of the defunct UT Bank, Mr Prince Kofi Amoabeng, who is on trial in connection with the collapse of the bank.

Justice Philip Bright Mensah, a Justice of the Court of Appeal who sat as a High Court judge, ordered the AG on Thursday, 28 May 2020, to serve Mr Amoabeng and four others with all the necessary documents.

The Attorney General has up to June 22 to file the disclosures and serve them on the defence team.

Chief State Attorney Frances Mullen Ansah told the court on Thursday that his side was working to have the trial documents filed and served on the accused persons with the initial June 23 adjournment date in mind prior to the abridgement of time.

In February, Mr Amoabeng and five others were slapped with 42 charges by the state.

The charges came after an Accra Circuit Court on, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 dropped all the earlier charges against him.

The five others include Johnson Pandit Asiama (2nd Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BOG) between May 2016 and December 2017), Raymond Amanfu (Head of Banking Supervision Department (BSD) at BOG from 2014 to October 2017), UT Holdings Ltd. According to her, the earnings were proceeds from accommodation, food, shopping, local transport and entertainment.

GHS6 million was, however, spent on promoting the Year of Return campaign in and out of the country.

The minister emphasised that the average expenditure per tourist was $2,391.

  • Market Queens in Takoradi welcome shift system

Market Queens at the Takoradi Market Circle in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) have welcomed the decision of the Assembly to introduce a shift system using coloured cards for traders as a means to stem the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Metropolis.

The market queens in the various markets were engaged by the Assembly, before arriving at the decision to introduce the shift system using coloured cards when the markets reopened.

Mr. Anthony K.K. Sam, Metropolitan Chief Executive of STMA, explained that the Sekondi-Takoradi Metro and the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assemblies held a joint Security Council meeting to review measures put in place to control the spread of COVID-19 in the Metropolitan area.

At the meeting, it was agreed that the Sekondi, Takoradi, Jubilee Park, Kojokrom and Effia Markets be close down to public from Thursday, May 28, to Wednesday, June 3, 2020.

He explained that while the markets remained closed, the various Assemblies would undertake fumigation and disinfection exercises.

The MCE noted that the recent increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the Metropolis was due to a decision taken to get all staff of the Assembly, front line workers, health institutions and security agencies to a compulsory test for the COVID-19.

He indicated that initially some market women agreed to go to the Jubilee Park but later disregarded the move and went back to the Market Circle to sell whereas some members at the fishing harbour flouted the protocols.

Mr Sam disclosed that his outfit was looking for more centers to be used for quarantine, more security personnel, funds to support front line workers with PPEs as well as educate people on the need to implement more robust plans to stem the spread of the pandemic in the Metropolis.

The meeting agreed that the Takoradi Market would run three shifts thus, red, yellow and green coloured cards would be used, while the Sekondi, Kojokrom and Effia Markets would run two shifts using red and yellow cards.

Madam Rose Nyameye, a Market Queen who spoke to the Ghana News Agency in an interview, hinted that traders were doing their best to observe the protocols, but that there were some recalcitrant ones who relegated the protocols to the background, hence the need to close down the markets.

“I believe when this is done, the traders will learn their lessons and comply with the directives when the market is reopened. Our numbers keep rising and the authorities need to do something about it,” she opined.

Meanwhile, market women at the Effia Market in the Effia-Kwesimintim Municipal Assembly (EKMA) have pleaded with the city authorities to exempt them from the closure.

They have also pleaded with the city authorities to consider extending the closing date to enable them clear their stocks, which were already going bad.

A market woman, Madam Ayishetu Anas told the Ghana News Agency that the news about the closure came to them two days to the closure. It came as a surprise since they were doing their best to comply with the social distancing protocols.

Mr Philip Evans Nyarko, Assemblyman for the Effia Electoral Area, said Assembly Members were not consulted about the decision, but that it was necessary that the Effia Market was closed. If not all the people would troop there for trading and shopping when exempted, which may import COVID-19 cases into the Municipality.

He said the decision to close the markets was not an easy one to take, but looking at the fact that the Metropolis was becoming a hotspot for the pandemic, it was necessary for all strategies to be put in place to fight the menace.

He was of the view that the closure of the markets would inure to their good, as it would save lives and urged the market women to embrace it and refrain from the market during the period.

Mr. Nyarko noted that trading has not being banned and encouraged the traders to engage in neighbourhood trading, while observing the social distancing, wearing of nose mask, and the washing of hands especially after handling money to avoid possible infections.

  • Ghana’s daily infection rate slightly decreasing – Dr Badu Sarkodie

Dr Badu Sarkodie, the Director of Public Health, Ghana Health Service (GHS), on Thursday said although the country’s daily rate of new COVID-19 infections are decreasing, the curve is not sharp enough.

He said while some earlier hotspot areas such as Tema, Lower Manya and Obuasi districts have not recorded new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the past week, three other hotspots have sprung up within the same period, pushing the infection curve slightly upward.

He attributed this to the fact that people were still not adhering to the preventive etiquettes and safety protocols, and advised the public to be more responsible and supportive in their behavior towards the fight against the spread of the virus in their communities.

Dr Sarkodie, who was giving Ghana’s situational update of the COVID-19 pandemic at the Minister’s press briefing in Accra, said official data by the GHS as at May 26, 2020 indicates that there has been 186 new infections from 31 districts in four regions since its last update on Tuesday, May 25.

He said the country’s current test positivity rate is 3.56 per cent, with a cumulative total of 7,303 positive cases, 2,412 recoveries and 34 deaths.

He said this leaves the total number of active cases at 4, 857 persons, who are being managed in treatment sites, isolation centres and other home management situations; and out of these 14 were severe, but not on ventilators and three were also critically ill.

Giving details on the district update of the new cases recorded, he said, although in the Greater Accra Region 18 districts new cases, those with significant numbers were Ablekuma -47, Ayawaso East-36, Ayawaso North-11, Korle Klottey-13, and Okaikoi-six, with the remaining districts contributed about five cases or less each, while Tema metropolis also recorded four new cases.

He explained that all of them were districts who had already recorded cases and were being managed by health authorities through the existing measures, including aggressive contact tracing, treatment, isolation and intensive public education on the hygiene and safety protocols among others.

Dr Sarkodie said districts in the Eastern Region including the Akuapem North and South respectively recorded new cases, while in the Central Region, Cape Coast, Mfantseman, Abora Dunkwa and Upper Denkyira also had new record of infections.

In the case of the Ashanti Region six districts recorded new cases and these were made up of the Kumasi Metropolis-four, Amansie West- one; Kwabre East- one; Effigya Kwabre South-one; Ejisu-one and Oforikrom-one, but Obuasi metro did not record any new cases.

He said the three new hotspots involving Obuasi, Lower Manya Krobo and Tema districts which previously spiked the number of new infections did not record any cases this time, meaning the various measures including aggressive tracing, testing, isolating, and managing cases were working.

Dr Sarkodie said ongoing actions included engagements with all stakeholders including religious organisations, Ministry of Education, Ghana Football Association and providing them with the technical support needed for to develop their own risk communication guidelines for education.

Again, enhanced surveillance, contact tracing, testing and treatment were also ongoing.

He appealed to all citizens to remain committed and disciplined in enforcing the various hygiene and safety protocols which included social distancing, wearing of face masks and regular handwashing with soap under running water, or use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers.

  • Six districts in UE restricted from fertilizer distribution this year

Six districts in the Upper East Region have been restrained from dealing with sales and distribution of subsidized fertilizer to farmers due to incessant reported cases of smuggling.

According to the Regional Director of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA), Mr Francis Ennor, only nine districts could provide the services to farmers during the present cropping season.

The restricted districts include the Kassena Nankana West District, Bawku West and Bawku Municipal, Pusiga, Garu and Tempane Districts.

Mr Francis Ennor who made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Bolgatanga, had earlier said in some interviews, that until the rains start, no fertilizer would arrive in the Region due to the smuggling.

The Regional Director has however given a nod to input in the remaining nine districts to start bringing in their produce with the onset of the rains, to help the farmers who have started preparing and cropping their farms.

He said due to irrigation and farming activities at the Tono Irrigation areas, input dealers in the Kassena Nankana District had been given approval to supply farm inputs.

Though he was unable to give specified quantities because his outfit was still sorting that out, he mentioned that 20 articulator trucks of fertilizer had arrived in the Bolgatanga Municipality, for PENTASCO, distributors of farm inputs.

The MoFA Director reiterated that in all remaining fertilizer sales points, personnel of Nation Builders Corps (NABco) will be present to oversee the distribution of the fertilizer.

On Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJs), he said the programme would continue to receive the needed support in the entire region and indicated that District Chief Executive Officers will provide approval for the distribution of government subsidy to the farmers.

He said this year, the compound fertilizer was expected to be sold for GHC42.00 while Urea would be sold at GHC40.00, and both were contained in 25kilogramme bags instead of the 50KG bags distributed last cropping season.

All the inputs would be in identifiable PFJs sacks, he added.

On Seeds, he said the maizehybrid and open pollinated varieties, cowpea and soya beans would be sold at GHC 5.00 per kilo. On Covid-19 and how farmers can be protected, he advised input dealers to follow the protocols and not allow over-crowding at the sales points.

  • Locomotive crashes faulty fuel tanker on a rail line in Takoradi

A Locomotive (train head) belonging to the Ghana Railways Company Limited on Wednesday crashed into a faulty fuel tanker on a portion of the rail lines linking the Sekondi-Kojokrom- Takoradi Harbour.

    No casualty was recorded.

Confirming the story to the Ghana News Agency, Mr. Charles Brown, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Railways Company Limited, said the driver of the fuel tanker, which had loaded fuel from Ghanstock and heading towards Goil terminal, developed an engine failure upon reaching a section of the train line.

According to him, the tanker driver tried to work on the vehicle but was unsuccessful, which attracted the Level Crossing Keeper to go to his aid, but it did not also work.

The PRO indicated that just when the level crossing keeper had warned of how risky it was to stay on the line, the Locomotive reared its head.

Mr. Brown said, “Unfortunately the spot was a curve so signaling the Locomotive about the incident with the red flag did not help much since the train head could not make an abrupt stop”.

Meanwhile, it took the fire service a real hurdle to clear the rail of the debris after the crash that got the content of the tanker spilling all over the place.

DO III, Emmanuel Bonney, the Western Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, said it took personnel more than eight hours to work on the defect to bring sanity on that portion of the rail.

He explained that initially, the Service “foamed the area” to avoid any flames, which he noted enabled them to remove the tanker from the rail without any fire outbreak.

The tanker driver and his mate according to the Fire Service PRO later reported themselves to the Police for further interrogation.

  • Ghanaian Times: Reopening schools amid coronavirus pandemic

Since March, schools across the country have been closed to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. Subsequently, the country has struggled to combat the disease that has no known cure yet.

The closure of the schools is just one of the numerous decisions that were taken by the government to ensure the safety of all students, their teachers as well as members of the public.

After staying at home for sometime however, there has been mixed reactions towards the closure of the schools. While some call for easing of the restrictions to allow the schools to reopen, others recommend gradual reopening with another group also asking the government not to reopen the schools at all.

In fact the argument advanced by the various groups makes a lot of sense but of course, every one of them is going to be subjected to scrutiny by the health experts before a final decision is taken by the government.

On our part, we hold the view that we cannot remain in the present condition forever and that someday, somehow, students and teachers would have to go back to the classroom. So what do we do when the disease is still lurking around?

No doubt, the decision to open or not to open schools is not going to be an easy one because the teacher unions, the Parent-Teacher Associations and School Management Committees have said in various statements that the lives of teachers, students, and other school workers would be at risk due to the difficulty in maintaining social distance at schools.

They, therefore, proposed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) that any future decision to reopen schools must be based on science with published convincing data in support and consensus by parents and other stakeholders.

“Amid an increasing community spread, and the water, sanitation, and hygiene logistical constraints in schools, the GES should not advise the government to reopen schools now,” a statement from the Parent-Teacher Associations and School Management Committees said.

This position is however, strongly opposed by private schools who want the government to reopen the schools because their incomes and livelihoods depend solely on fees from their students.

Whatever decisions the government comes up with; there are some basic things that we must begin to look at before the schools are reopened.

The first major one is that, schools are going to face major budgetary challenges to meet the social distancing requirements demanded in the directives issued by the government.

Furthermore, the education authorities must be able to ensure that students and their teachers wear nose masks and wash their hands frequently with soap under running water which would require a lot of funds to sustain.

Although, some countries around the world have started reopening their schools and it would not be out of place for Ghana to do same, it is important that the logistics and other protective needs are provided the schools to ensure their safety in order contain the spread of COVID-19

It would be risky to reopen the schools without taking adequate measures to ensure that all schools adhered strictly to the necessary protocols to avoid further spread of the disease.

  • NDC is a disorderly party with ‘vacillating inconsistent leadership’ – Kwamena Duncan

Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan has described the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as a disorderly party with a “vacillating inconsistent leadership”.

According to Kwamena Duncan, everything the NDC is involved with ends up in shambles.

The National Democratic Congress on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 boycotted the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting with the Electoral Commission on the compilation of a new voters’ register.

Prior to the NDC’s abstinence from the meeting, the party had accused the EC of planning to rig the elections for the governing New Patriotic Party and added that the Commission’s decision to use only the Ghana card and passport as the legal requirements for the registration exercise is a ploy to disenfranchise 11 million Ghanaian electorates.

The party has also filed a suit against the EC in the Supreme Court praying for an order to direct the EC to include “all existing voter identification cards duly issued by the 2nd Defendant (EC) as one of the documents serving as proof of identification for registration as a voter for the purposes of public elections”.

It is also seeking a “declaration that, upon a true and proper interpretation of the provisions of the Constitution, particularly article 42, upon the registration of and issuance of a voter identification card to a person, that person has an accrued right to vote which cannot be divested in an arbitrary and capricious manner”.

Making his submissions on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, Kwamena Duncan noted that NDC’s opposition to the EC shows the party is in a confused state and made up of unserious people.

He urged Ghanaians not to repose any confidence in the NDC saying they have nothing better to offer the nation.

“It’s a political party that the leadership is in disarray. Their Presidential candidate struggling to find a partner, again five or six months to general elections; you don’t hear alternatives nor manifesto. In fact, everything is in disorder and that is what has attended their character anytime they’re in government,” he stated.

  • Teams must isolate and test players prior to league resumption – Godwin Attram

Head coach and president of Attram De Visser Soccer Academy, Godwin Attram has cautioned all club owners across the country to quarantine their players, technical team and officials at least for ten days before the season returns from COVID-19 break.

The football administrator and a coach made it clear that the game is played with confidence so players can not perform to their peak if they should harbour the fear of COVID-19.

Talking to power fm 97.9 sports about possible come back for the Ghana Premier League, the Black Stars team B assistant gaffer suggested that as part of measures to stop the spread of deadly novel coronairus pandemic, all premier League clubs, division one teams and Women’s League sides should endeavour to isolate themselves by doing from hotel or club house to training for at least ten days to prove to government and health authorities that football organizers are ready.

“I have been following media and stakeholders discussion which gave opinions like cancellation, continuation behind closed doors which are all good. But for me as a football person I do not support the idea to abridged the season especially facing deficit the previous year due to Anas expose”.

The 1997 u-17 national team skipper added that German football has led the way for all other leagues in the globe to follow. Some of the precautionary measures taken by the Germans includes one team traveling with three buses to honour a game all by ensuring social distancing protocol, changing Jersey in each half of the match, no spectators, avoidance of contact during celebration of goals, exchange of pleasantries with referees before, during and after matches just to mention a few.

I know Ghana can not observe all these because of our economy and the market value of our football but we have to sacrifice by directing resources to isolation and testing just to meet basic safety protocols requirements outlined by local government authorities and World Health Organization (W.H.O) to fight the disease.

Godwin Attram remind his fellow football administrators that German government gave football authorities the green light to play Bundesliga because of convincing preventive health measures presented so Ghana Football can not be in hinterland.

The simplicitor concluded saying whilst waiting for government to lift banned on public gathering and sporting events we must also start thinking of coming out with irresistible proposal as to why we football people think it’s safe to play football while fighting coronavirus.

Ghana premier League started very well with * bring back the love* slogan with all other teams honouring 15 games except Hearts, Kotoko, Inter Allies and King Faisal playing 14, and we must continue the trend of revival after number 12 video.

But, Opare Addo has denied these claims in an interview with Kumasi based OTEC FM.

  • Coach Michael Osei told my wife that women like foolish men – Samuel Kyere

Former Asante Kotoko defender Samuel Kyere says things went sour when David Duncan was sacked as coach of the Porcupine Warriors.

The defender has accused former coach Michael Osei of insulting him in the presence of his wife at the club’s training grounds.

Kyere and Michael Osei never saw eye to eye at the club when David Duncan left the club in 2016.

“I went with my wife to the training grounds and she was in my car so coach Micky told my wife that he likes me a lot and that she should talk to me because I have a bright future.

“So he exchanged contacts with my wife and asked her that how did she meet me and told her in front of me that women like foolish men at the training grounds.” he told Kumasi based Ashh FM.

“Ah I have spent money to marry my wife and since I came to Kotoko she had never watched my game so I brought her to the training grounds to watch my game.

“She did not even get down she was in the car and after training when the coach was coming to move his car I introduced her to him and he gave her an advice that she should talk to me because I have a bright future.”

“After all this advice he asked how did she meet me and added that women like foolish men a lot and he added that insult to achieve what purpose.”

“Asked how her wife took it he said “she smiled at the training grounds but when they got home she asked why would the coach do that.”

“It was then that I told her that is the way he has been behaving towards me since David Duncan left the club.”

“There are some people who smile to you in your face but in their heart they dislike you” Kyere added.

A 95-year-old World War Two veteran, Pte Joseph Hammond from Ghana, has sent a video message to fellow Burma veteran Capt Tom Moore, asking him to send a message to other veterans in Africa.

In the message he said: “I fought in second world war in Burma, just like you, and I have been inspired by what you did in Britain to raise funds for the people.”

“I fought in second world war in Burma, just like you, and I have been inspired by what you did in Britain to raise funds for the people.”

The war veteran Capt Tom raised more than £32m ($30m) for NHS charities by walking 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday in April.

Inspired by this, fellow war veteran Pte Joseph then walked two miles a day around Ghana’s capital Accra, for a week, finishing his challenge in Monday.

He raised just over £21,000 for front-line workers and veterans in Africa.

In the video message he said: “I would appreciate a note from you to share with my colleagues, the veterans in Africa.”

He is one of thousands of Africans, then under colonial rule, who fought for Britain in World War Two.

  • George Afriyie denies GFA appointment on Division One Advisory Board

Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, George Afriyie has vehemently denied reports that he has been appointed by President Kurt Okraku to serve on the Advisory Board of Division One.

But the Planners Athletic owner disclosed he was nominated by members of Division One to represent them on the Advisory Board.

Setting the records straight, the former FA President candidate revealed his continuous support for Ghana football.

Below is a letter from George Afriyie:

    Dear colleagues in football,

I trust we are all staying safe and continue to adhere to the safety protocols as we collectively seek to win over the COVID-19 pandemic.

I have received a lot of calls and messages in the last couple of hours and have read various media publications on a purported appointment by GFA President Kurt Okraku to serve on a Division One League Advisory Board.

The numerous media reportage and social media circulations only seek to peddle a blatant misrepresentation of the facts.

Let me hasten to put on record that my place on the Division One League Advisory Committee is not on the dint of an invitation from the GFA but rather a nomination by club owners and administrators on the Zone 3 platform who share a common position with me on the subject at hand (18-club Division One League) for which I have strongly kicked against. I also feel compelled as a club owner to get involved in deciding on matters that affect the nucleus of our clubs thus my decision to accept the nomination from club owners and administrators from Zone 3. I believe that we need to come together to review and amend the current statutes as we agreed in principle at the last congress of the Normalisation Committee.

I believe that the future of our football ultimately lies in the choices and decisions we make today. Therefore my position is that there must be a broader engagement and consultation on the subject with the wider football legislature (CONGRESS) because every Premier League club is a potential Division One League club, every Division One League club is a potential Premier League club, or a Division Two club. So concentrating power in the hands of the minority to decide the fate of the majority is not the way to go.

I will continue to serve in various capacities in seeking the greater good of Ghana football.

Let us continue to stay safe, obey the safety protocols and remain vigilant in the fight against COVID-19.

    #yestogether we build

    Kindest regards, George Afriyie

  • Things went bad after David Duncan left – Kotoko defender

Former Kotoko player Samuel Kyere says things went sour when David Duncan was sacked as coach of Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

The often controversial player has sung the praises of his former coach as a coach who is not economical with the truth to players and says things as it is.

Kyere says things were never the same when the now Black Stars assistant coach left the porcupine warriors.

“When David Duncan left Kotoko things went bad because If you look at when he came initially in his first game against Medeama at the Kumasi Sports Stadium and next one against Ashgold I was dropped and did’nt make the squad.” he told Ashh FM

“He told me at training that If I’m not serious at Kotoko he will not use me at the club, he does not hide anything from players he said it in the full glare of the whole team.

He told me to be serious and break into the team and not expect to get into the team because I came during his time.”

“I came to Kotoko as a right back but he used me at a left back but he did’nt bench Amos [Frimpong] for me to play at right back despite Amos being able to play at left back.

He brought me but did’nt care to field me instead of Amos Frimpong we were all able to play at the full back positions.

When I was at the U-20 Amos came to do justify about four times but he was unable to displace me at the right full back position.

I went to the U-20 tournament with Richmond Nketiah in South Africa.” he added.

Samuelk Kyere joined Asante Kotoko in 2013/14 season and left the club in 2017.

  • Ghanaian youngster Jordi Osei-Tutu on target as VfL Bochum beat Holstein Kiel

Ghanaian youngster Jordi Osei-Tutu scored again for VfL Bochum in their 2-1 win over Holstein Kiel in the German Bundesliga II on Wednesday.

  • Willie Klutse slams money-focused footballers

Former Ghana international Willie Klutse has criticised current members of the national team, claiming players are more focused on personal gains at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) than winning the trophy.

The West Africans have endured a series of misses since last conquering the continent in 1982.

Last year, the Black Stars’ attempt misfired woefully as they suffered a Round of 16 elimination at the hands of Tunisia, their first time of failing to reach the quarter-finals since 2006.

“I see players projecting themselves for their foreign contracts and forgetting about the agenda of the country,” Klutse, a member of Ghana’s side which won the nation’s third of four Afcon titles in 1978, told Joy News.

“Right now, we are [concerned] about not winning the Afcon trophy in 39 years. Is that the mentality of our players? Are they also thinking like that? Are they hungry to win the cup for us or they are just trying to play in the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup to better their contracts outside the country?

“If they have this mentality, there is no way we can win the Africa Cup of Nations now. Because the mentality back then is different from the mentality that I see this time around.

“They only come and their mentality is on money. They are going to the Africa Cup of Nations and they want to meet the president and bargain how much [they] are getting. They have their [own agenda] because the focus is on the money and not the cup.”

Without a doubt, Ghana’s biggest money-related controversy at a major tournament in recent times remains the embarrassing 2014 World Cup episode in Brazil.

Ahead of a must-win last group game against Portugal, players boycotted training sessions in protest over unpaid appearance fees and bonuses.

It had to take a presidential order to fly over $ 3.5 million [€3,185,829.4] to the South American nation on the eve of the all-important match to calm agitations in camp.

Ghana ultimately lost 2-1 to Portugal, finishing last in the group and exiting the tournament.

It was the first time the West Africans had failed to progress past the group stage of the World Cup in three appearances.

Unsurprisingly, the team was greeted with apathy on their return home, amid boos and jeers.

The public anger became apparent in games as fans largely boycotted national team matches.

In a 2017 Afcon qualifier against Uganda, the Black Stars played in virtually an empty stadium despite playing at their revered Baba Yara Stadium home ground in Kumasi.

The next Afcon is set to come off in Cameroon next year.

  • English football was too strong for me – Odartey Lamptey

Former Aston Villa and Coventry City attacker Nii Odartey Lamptey has revealed the physicality of the Premier League contributed to his largely unsuccessful spell in England in the 90s.

After a fine stint on loan at Dutch side PSV Eindhoven from Belgian giants Anderlecht, the Ghanaian joined Villa in 1994, a transfer that produced three goals and less than a dozen appearances in all competitions.

He was on the move the following season to City but another disappointing campaign meant he would promptly quit English football for good, making a switch to Italian side Venezia.

“It was really too much for me, to me it was a wrong decision to move to England at that time,” Lamptey, who has advised in-demand Ghana midfielder Thomas Teye Partey to snub English clubs Arsenal and Manchester United in the wake of transfer reports, told the Daily Graphic newspaper.

“I went there because Anderlecht did not want to approve of my stay in Holland, which would have helped me much and I was also not willing to return to Belgium.

“It was not easy to fit into the [Premier League] in those days. Their style of play was too robust for my liking and besides, I met very tall players, so I struggled to cope.

“Their style of play never suited me at all. The players were not only tall but also they liked playing long balls and running for them.

“I was short and skilful at that time so it affected my performance so much.”

Lamptey again spent only one season at Venezia, foretelling a journeyman’s career in waiting.

He transferred to Argentine side Union Santa Fe where he spent less than a year before moving to Turkish outfit Ancaragucu and later to Portuguese fold Union Leiria.

“I was also playing many matches for the various national teams in Ghana so at a tender age of 19 years in 1994, it was not easy for me. You can imagine the load on my shoulders at that time,” the 45-year-old, who won gold with Ghana at the 1991 U17 World Cup, bronze at the 1992 Olympic Games and Silver at the 1993 U20 World Cup, added. His outstanding performance at the U17 World Cup, where he was adjudged Player of the Tournament, caught the eye of Brazil and world football icon Pele.

“My work permit [in England] was not renewed because a foreign player needed to play 75 percent of matches for his club but because I was almost always playing for the national teams, I did not meet their criteria for a work permit renewal.

“Eventually, I left for Italy to continue my career in Venezia but I stayed for a short time and left for Argentina to play for Boca Juniors.”

Lamptey later played for German side Greuther Furth, Shandong Luneng in China and Al-Nasr Dubai in the United Arab Emirates before briefly returning to Ghana to feature for Asante Kotoko.

He last played for South African side Jomo Cosmos before calling time on his career.

  • Flashback: Normalisation Committee rubbishes report of Nyantakyi’s exoneration

A year ago today, the Normalization Committee led by Dr. Kofi Amoah disputed a claim that the Federation of International Football Association(FIFA) has cleared former Ghana Football Association boss Kwesi Nyantakyi of all financial impropriety.

This came after Ghanasoccernet published that Mr. Nyantakyi and members of the Executive Committee under his tenure have all been exonerated from all counts of corruption after FIFA forensic audit.

The publication further stated that the forensic audit conducted by FIFA on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) found no acts of corruption or financial impropriety on Kwesi Nyantakyi during his tenure.

The Normalization Committee through its Member Naa Adofoley Nortey rubbished the claim, denying any knowledge of such a report at the office of the committee.

The Normalisation Committee has disputed a claim that FIFA has cleared former GFA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi of all financial impropriety.

Ghanasoccernet on Monday revealed that Mr Nyantakyi and members of the Executive Committee under his tenure have all been exonerated from all counts of corruption after FIFA forensic audit.

It said a forensic audit conducted by FIFA on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has found no acts corruption or financial impropriety on Kwesi Nyantakyi during his tenure,

But member of the NC Naa Adofoley Nortey rubbished the claim, denying any knowledge of such a report at the office of the committee.

“I was very surprised when I read that FIFA has finished with their forensic audit and there was no charges against Mr Nyantakyi, she said as quoted by modernghana.com.

“The Normalization Committee have not received anything from FIFA.

“We know how FIFA works when it comes to communicating to the public. Visit the website of FIFA and check if there is anything like that.

Naa Adofoley has categorically falsified the report, urging the public to disregard it.

“There is nothing like that there and I can confirm to you that we have not received anything like that,” she said.

“The publication was false and I will urge the public not to pay attention to it.”

“We were even discussing when FIFA will give us the feedback on the forensic audit and as a I speak nothing has been communicated to us from FIFA. The media is there to give accurate information and not to tell lies about the Normalization Committee.”

Mr Nyantakyi resigned as the president of the Ghana Football Association after he was captured in the ‘Number 12’ investigative video.

He is however challenging his lifetime ban from football-related activities at the Court of Arbitration of Sports.

He has also sent Anas to court in Ghana claiming the violation of his human rights and also seeking damages for defamation.

  • NDCs absence at IPAC allowed sanity to prevail – Kofi Akpaloo

Founder of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Mr. Kofi Akpaloo says he was happy the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) failed to show up at the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Wednesday.

The presidential candidate told Kwabena Agyapong on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that the NDC had nothing meaningful to add to the deliberations that the various parties had with the Electoral Commission (EC) concerning its preparedness towards the compilation of the new register.

Mr. Akpaloo said the compilation of the new register is a must and the only way for us to have free, fair, credible and transparent elections this year.

The presence of the NDC he said would have amounted to nothing considering their position on the new register.

”The LPG as a party is satisfied with the arrangements of the EC and we are fully in support of the new register. We cannot go into this election with a register that is fraught with irregularities, he stated.

”The absence of the NDC at IPAC was good for the meeting. Sanity prevailed in the absence. They are troublesome and as a politician, I pray their party will collapse to save this country from their troubles. The high rate of unemployment and difficulties we have encountered as a country is their fault.”

Meanwhile, the EC has hinted it will conduct the compilation of the new register in five clusters.

The Director of Electoral Services at the EC, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe disclosed this to journalists after an Inter-Party Advisory meeting on Wednesday.

He said the exact date for the registration exercise would be announced later but it is expected to start in the last week of June 2020.

“This time around we are using five registration centres per a cluster. So assuming you have 15 polling stations, you divide the 15 by five, so that you have 10 clusters. And each cluster will form one registration team and each team will be made up of two registration officers, two data entry clerks, one registration officer special duties, he will be in charge of commuting between the team and the district office as well as exporting data and the rest, then we will have the laminator.”

“So each phase for the five,… will last for six days. So what it means is that the registration officers will go to the first phase of the five polling station centre in that cluster. So when they go to the first cluster, they will be there for six days, and when they are there for six days, on the 7th day, they will rest due to the rush and interaction and then they will move to the next registration centre in the second phase for another six days and one day to retool and then they will go to the third phase…”

  • Baby delivered via Caesarean section from Covid-19 positive mother has tested negative

The baby boy whose mother was a positive Covid-19 patient and was delivered via a Caesarean section at the Apinto Government Hospital in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality in the Western Region last week has tested negative for the disease.

The mother has also now tested negative for the disease but the doctors are waiting for a second confirmatory test to declare her as fully recovered from the disease, according to Dr Joseph Darko.

A medical team, led by Dr Jospeh Darko a specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist did the delivery.

The team, which was made up of doctors, nurses, midwives and anaesthetics, with support from cleaners, was confronted with the real life situation of saving the life of mother and child or ignore that for the fear of contracting COVID-19.

Confirming the negative status of the baby, Dr Darko said: “About two weeks ago we did successfully operate and deliver a confirmed Covid-19 expectant mum of a very handsome baby boy and soon afterwards we took the sample of the baby and sent to the lab to be tested for SARSCov2.”

“The good news is the result came in this morning and the baby tested negative for SARSCov2. The better news is that, even the mum’s sample that was taken a couple of days after the surgery and was sent for re-testing also came out as negative. We are awaiting a second sample that was taken some days back to also test negative so that we can declare the mum as having fully recovered from Covid-19,” Dr Darko told Citi FM’s Western Regional correspondent.

  • Coronavirus deaths in US top 100,000

The US has passed 100,000 deaths in the coronavirus outbreak in less than four months.

It has seen more fatalities than any other country, while its 1.69 million confirmed infections account for about 30% of the worldwide total.

The first US infection was reported in Washington state on 21 January.

Globally there have been 5.6 million people recorded as infected and 354,983 deaths since the virus emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan late last year.

The US death toll stands at 100,276, according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, which has been tracking the pandemic.

It means that around as many Americans have died from COVID-19 than from the Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined.

But on a per capita basis the US ranks ninth in its mortality rate behind the likes of Belgium, the United Kingdom, France and Italy, according to the university.

The US death toll is still climbing, and health officials say the actual number is likely higher than the recorded count.

    What’s the national picture?

Twenty states reported a rise in new cases for the week ending on Sunday, according to a Reuters study.

North Carolina, Wisconsin and Arkansas are among those seeing a steady rise in cases.

The caseload remains stubbornly high in a number of metropolitan areas, including Chicago, Los Angeles and suburban Washington DC.

Some hard-hit states are seeing a drop in death rates, including New York, where 21,000 residents have died.

During the peak of the crisis in the city, the daily death toll was in the hundreds. Hospitals were overwhelmed and makeshift morgues were built outside health facilities.

What has been the political response?

President Donald Trump has insisted that without his administration’s actions the death toll would be 25 times higher, though critics have accused him of a slow response.

State governors have also been blamed for failing to grasp early enough the lethal threat that the virus posed to nursing homes.

Initially, the Republican president downplayed the pandemic, comparing it to the seasonal flu. Back in February he said the US had the virus “under control” and that by April it could “miraculously go away”.

He predicted 50,000-60,000 deaths, then 60,000-70,000 and then “substantially under 100,000”.

Mr Trump also argued this month it was “a badge of honour” that the US had the world’s highest number of confirmed infections “because it means our testing is much better”.

A study from Columbia University in New York suggested about 36,000 fewer people would have died if the US had acted sooner.

Joe Biden, Mr Trump’s likely Democratic challenger in November’s White House election, issued a message directly to grieving families on Wednesday.

“To those hurting, I’m so sorry for your loss,” the former vice-president said in a tweet. “The nation grieves with you.”

He also criticised the Trump administration’s handling of the crisis. “This is a fateful milestone we should not have reached; it could have been avoided,” he said.

    How is the lockdown easing?

With nearly 39 million Americans out of work during the pandemic, the US is pressing ahead state by state with reopening the coronavirus-frozen economy, even as the death toll continues to move upwards.

All 50 states have begun to ease COVID-19 rules in some form.

The world’s largest theme park, Walt Disney World in Florida, has plans to begin opening on 11 July, if the state governor allows it.

Four Las Vegas casinos owned by MGM Resorts are also scheduled to reopen on 4 July. The company says employees will be tested for Covid-19 regularly.

Currently, there is no vaccine for Covid-19. There is also no confirmed treatment for the disease, but there are several being tested.

According to an AP-NORC poll conducted this month, just 49% of Americans said they would get a coronavirus vaccine if one became available.
