  • Check quality of Atuabo Gas COPEC

In a statement issued by the COPEC, Executive Secretary, Mr. Duncan Amoah said that, “based on complaints from consumers of LPG produced from Atuabo, we maintain that the Propane level in Atuabo LPG is unnecessarily higher than expected, and this has been partly blamed for some of the rampant fires the country has seen over the past years including domestic and retail outlet fires as adduced to by the LPG marketers on public record”.

“It is our value proposition that Atuabo checks these parameters going forward and also publish the P-B ratio of the gas it pumps onto the local market and where found to be higher in propane as our initial checks point to, causes a massive public education on the need to acquire storage bottles that are produced and specified as propane bottles together with the necessary cables to avert the rampant leakages due to the high pressures associated with the gas from Atuabo.”

“Further, beyond the calling on Atuabo Gas Company to declare the ratio of Propane to Butane in the LPG produced, we also demand an independent public testing to be conducted on random samples picked from some retail outlets at some accredited laboratories in order to put to rest the quality/standard issues and the observed high pressures from gas supplied by Atuaboa” the statement noted.

Among other demands, COPEC is also asking for, “an immediate review of the cost of LPG supplied by Atuabo to ensure Ghanaian LPG consumers do not continue to pay higher for locally produced gas whiles the imported one rather sells cheaper.”

  • Nana Yaa Brefo: Ex-Adom TV host tells why she resigned and McBrown’s role (video)

According to Yaa Brefo, her main reason for tendering in her resignation and eventually leave Multimedia Group.

As earlier reported by YEN.com.gh, Yaa Brefo, a co-host of Adom TV’s Badwam morning show, announced her resignation from Multimedia on Saturday, May 16, 2020.

Announcing her resignation, Nana Yaa Brefo thanked the company for the 10 years given her to work with Adom TV and Adom FM.

While she did not reveal the reasons for her resignation or her next move, many linked her decision to the recent interview she had with Nana Ama McBrown about the late Bishop Bernard Nyarko.

In her first interview after the resignation, Yaa Brefo had refused to speak to any of the rumours concerning the reasons for her resignation.

But speaking in an interview on Neat FM on Wednesday, May 27, 2020, Nana Yaa disclosed that she had thought of resigning from her role because she did not feel appreciated and not because of the McBrown issue.

Yaa Brefo, however, admitted that McBrown’s issue was the last straw that triggered her to move from the station.

  • Twitter tags Trump tweet with fact-checking warning

A post by US President Donald Trump has been given a fact-check label by Twitter for the first time.

Mr Trump tweeted, without providing evidence: “There is NO WAY (ZERO!) that Mail-In Ballots will be anything less than substantially fraudulent.”

Twitter put a warning label in the post and linked to a page that described the claims as “unsubstantiated”.

Mr Trump on Wednesday threatened to “strongly regulate” or even “close down” social media platforms.

He tweeted that Republicans felt the platforms “totally silence conservatives” and that he would not allow this to happen. In an earlier tweet, he said that Twitter was “completely stifling free speech”.

Later on Wednesday he said that Twitter “has now shown everything we have been saying about them… is correct” and vowed “big action to follow”.

It is unclear what regulatory steps the president could take without new laws passed by Congress. The White House has yet to offer further details.

For years, Twitter has faced criticism for not acting on the president’s controversial tweets, which include personal attacks on political rivals and debunked conspiracy theories.

This month the platform introduced a new policy on misleading information amid the coronavirus pandemic.

But recent posts in which Mr Trump – who has more than 80 million followers on Twitter – promoted a conspiracy theory about the death of political aide Lori Klausutis, blaming a high-profile critic, have not received the same treatment.

The notification on Mr Trump’s tweet shows a blue exclamation mark and a link suggesting readers “get the facts about mail-in ballots”.

It directs users to a page on which Mr Trump’s claims are described as “unsubstantiated”, citing reporting by CNN, the Washington Post and others.

The pandemic is putting pressure on US states to expand the use of postal voting because people are worried about becoming infected at polling stations.

In a “what you need to know” section, Twitter writes that Mr Trump “falsely claimed mail-in ballots would lead to ‘a Rigged Election’.”

“Fact-checkers say there is no evidence that mail-in ballots are linked to voter fraud,” it continues.

The company had pledged to increase the use of warning labels about false or misleading information on its site, but has been slow to take steps against the US president.

Mr Trump posted the same claim about mail-in ballots on Facebook, but it is not fact-checked on that platform.

  • Review of outmoded business regulatory regimes underway

The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MoTI) and key stakeholders have begun reviewing various regulatory regimes that govern the current business framework in the country.

The review seeks to amend business operating laws that are considered to be outdated and contradictory in the current business operating system as well as regimes that are further impacting dual taxes and causing unnecessary burden on the business community.

This is part of intense efforts aimed at enhancing entrepreneurship and also increase trade and investment in the country which is part of the Business Regulatory Reforms programme started in 2017.

The exercise seeks to clean up existing business regulations that are inefficient or considered not business-friendly, whilst maintaining adequate protections for consumers as well as improving how business regulations are produced by ensuring that new regulations meet an agreed minimum criteria.

Goldstreet Business understands that MoTI has already worked in partnership with a legal firm to coordinate all business operating laws into a single electronic register which consists of all business regulatory frameworks as this has been linked with the business consultation portal.

This is expected to enable the private sector and investors seeking to invest have access to detail information of all business regulations that have been developed.

Having coordinated all the business laws and frameworks, an initial assessment conducted indicated that some of such laws were contradictory and old.

Business Regulatory Reforms / SME policy

To enable the private sector benefits in the operationalization of the Business Regulatory Reforms programme, the Ministries of Trade and Industry and Business Development are preparing to launch a new policy framework to enhance the competitiveness of Micro, Small & Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) which was approved recently.

When fully implemented, the policy framework is expected to drive key specific interventions such as a credit rating system as well as effective measures to de-risk the business ecosystem which will in turn protect the development of SMEs.

Intense negotiations between the two ministries and business groups representing the private sector notably Ghana National Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GNCCI) and Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) reached an advanced stage last year geared towards implementing a National Policy framework to guide the operations of MSMEs.

  • Trump threatens to ‘close down’ social media after his tweets were tagged unsubstantiated

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened to close down social media platforms after Twitter labelled two of his tweets “unsubstantiated” and accused him of making false claims.

Twitter targeted tweets in which the president said that mail-in voting would lead to fraud and a “Rigged Election” in November.

Under the tweets, Twitter posted a link which read “Get the facts about mail-in ballots” — a first for the social network which has long resisted calls to censure the president.

In response, Trump fought back, tweeting that “Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives voices. We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen.”

Trump repeated his allegations, saying “we can’t let large scale Mail-In Ballots take root in our Country. It would be a free for all on cheating, forgery and the theft of Ballots.

“Whoever cheated the most would win. Likewise, Social Media. Clean up your act, NOW!!!!” he added.

The president also accused social media platforms of interfering in the last election, saying “we saw what they attempted to do, and failed, in 2016.”

    – 80 million followers –

The president has long used Twitter as a platform to spread abuse, conspiracy theories, false information and insults to his 80 million followers.

Before being elected in 2016, he built his political brand by supporting the “birther” lie that Barack Obama, America’s first black president, was not born in the United States and therefore was not eligible to be president.

The notice tagged to Trump’s tweets read “Trump falsely claimed that mail-in ballots would lead to ‘Rigged Election’

“However, fact-checkers say there is no evidence that mail-in ballots are linked to voter fraud.”

Trump aimed the misleading tweets at California, contending wrongly that anyone living in the state would be sent ballots when in fact they will only go to registered voters, according to the notice.

The tweets in question violated a recently expanded Twitter policy, said the San Francisco-based company.

“In serving the public conversation, our goal is to make it easy to find credible information on Twitter and to limit the spread of potentially harmful and misleading content,” the company vowed when the change was announced.

Twitter’s move came as Trump, already facing US economic calamity and 100,000 deaths from coronavirus as well as sinking reelection polls, continued to push a conspiracy theory about TV host Joe Scarborough.

In an attempted character assassination of Scarborough, Trump has spread the baseless rumor that Scarborough murdered an aide.

The entirely evidence-free story claims that Scarborough killed a woman he was having an affair with in 2001, when he was a Republican congressman and she was one of his staffers.

Politics is believed to be a game of chance and others think it’s a dirty game because the players disguise themselves with lofty promises while milking the masses to enrich themselves.

  • “She isn’t our mother” – 3 children reject mum who left them while still babies

There was drama in Roysambu estate, Nairobi county when three children who were set to be handed over to their mother protested the court’s directive insisting they wanted to stay with their father.

The mother, Grace Wachira, had moved to court seeking custody of the children after she allegedly left her marriage in 2018.

Speaking to the media on Sunday, May 24, the unidentified father said he was left with his youngest daughter who was breastfeeding at that time and had to single-handedly take care of her.

“The last born was left when she was suckling. I have raised them single-handedly and now she has a court order, she was supposed to take them but they have refused and created a scene,” said the man.

He said Grace had moved to court seeking custody of her children and won.

She was set to pick them up but the minors refused insisting they wanted to stay with their father.

“We want our dad, she is not our mum, she is called Grace Wachira. You work with her at Inooro. We don’t even want to listen to her,” said the eldest son.

The distressed man noted he tried to call his estranged wife for a dialogue in order to iron out issues with the children but his efforts fell on deaf ears.

“I don’t have an option, I’ll just go back to court and tell the magistrate how they reacted. I tried to plead with her and wrote her messages and told her to come to rebond with the kids but she refused,” said the father.

  • The Transformation Leadership Panel (TLP), an initiative of the Africa Center for Economic Transformation (ACET), will meet on May 27 to review COVID-1

Hundreds of traders from the Volta Region have begun flooding the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Headquarters in Ho to get registered for the Tax Identification Number (TIN), to enable them to acquire loans from the GH¢600 million stimulus package allocated to the National Board for Small Scale Businesses Industries (NBSSI).

Following the economic hardship the COVID-19 pandemic has brought across the country and the world at large, the government has allocated some GHS600 million as soft loans to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), with up to a one-year moratorium and a two-year repayment period with an interest rate of three per cent.

Traders would have to provide identifications including the TIN to enabled them to get the loans.

On Tuesday, 26 and Wednesday 27, May 2020, some traders most especially women from across the region without TIN flooded the premises of the GRA in Ho to register.

Anthony Kwabla Dekagbe, Chief Revenue Officer at the Ho Small Taxpayer Office who is in charge of TIN registration, indicated that there have been a massive registration for the past weeks, especially for petty traders and artisans.

“Last week alone, we processed over 600, some are from outside the Ho Municipality, we got some of the forms from Keta, some are from Kpetoe and the rest, this morning the hairdressers association brought some forms from Kpetoe for us to process…this is the first time we are trying to ensure that every Ghanaian have the TIN.” he noted.

He noted that some Ghanaians have now seen the need to have a Tax Identification Number, “Those who are coming from outskirts don’t really see the need for the TIN, but now with this fund, the fund is going down to the grassroots (hence they all need the TIN),” he added.

The Volta/Oti Director of NBSSI, Seth Klutse said many traders who have interest in the loan but without TIN were referred to the GRA to get registered to enabled them to have a smooth process for the money.

“A lot of them come to the office without their TIN, they are not even aware, so when they come, with the education and orientation we realise they don’t have a TIN, an average of 20 to 30 per day come to the office, just the Ho Municipal office, so when you use that across the board, we’re working in about 26 districts, and we refer them to the GRA,” he said.

He noted that the intervention is not politically motivated hence the need for every Ghanaian to apply especially small scale business owners to enable them to sustain their businesses amidst the coronavirus hardships.

“Those who are market women, those who are farmers…I encourage them to apply, it is not political, it is not politically biased, it is for everybody, once you are a Ghanaian, you are eligible,” he said.

Some traders said the loan will help them in their businesses but the process to acquire the money is not favourable.

  • Accra Village appeals for projects to improve living conditions

Mr Enock Adjetey Adjei, an Opinion leader of Accra Village, a community in the Eastern Region has appealed to the central Government for social amenities to enhance their living conditions.

He said the Accra Village, near Kuano in the Ayensuano District lacked electricity, borehole water, clinic, KVIP and accessible road to cart their farm produce.

Mr Adjei who made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said the residents were peasant farmers who lived in abject poverty and could not even afford to construct latrines in their homes, thereby living in insanitary environmental conditions, such as open defecation.

He pleaded for the fixing of the damaged bridge over Kua River, constructed in 1980 to enable children and farmers to have access to their schools and farms.

Mr Adjei said several appeals to the District Assembly, the Member of Parliament for the area and benevolent organisations yielded no results, hence the call on the central Government to come to their aid.

  • Elon Musk’s historic SpaceX launch postponed due to weather

Launch officials announced at 4:17 p.m. Wednesday that rough weather would prevent a SpaceX rocket and capsule from taking off from a Florida launch pad, carrying NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley on the first crewed spaceflight to take off from US soil in nearly a decade.

There are additional launch windows this Saturday and Sunday, a NASA spokesperson said. The next attempt will be on Saturday at 3:22 p.m.

There was a 50% chance the flight would be “scrubbed,” or postponed, due to weather as of Wednesday morning. Rain along the flight path and developing afternoon thunderstorms in the vicinity were the main concerns for the launch, as Florida has faced heavy rain from a tropical disturbance for the last several days.

In case any issues were to arise with the rocket after liftoff, SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule has the ability to break away from the rocket and fly the astronauts to safety. But to make sure they’ll have a safe splashdown, SpaceX must monitor the weather conditions through a broad swath of the Atlantic Ocean to prepare for any possible abort scenario.

The 45th Space Wing, an arm of the military that oversees all East Coast rocket launches, monitors the weather and shares its information with NASA and SpaceX.

The launch of SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft is planned to move forward over the weekend despite the Covid-19 pandemic, which has shuttered both private and government operations across the US. NASA says it must carry on with the mission in order to keep the International Space Station, a giant orbiting laboratory, fully staffed with US astronauts.

The space agency’s top official, Jim Bridenstine, also said he hopes this launch will inspire awe and uplift the general public during the ongoing health crisis.

On the ground in Florida, local authorities were bracing for an expected influx of spectators who were expected to gather on nearby beaches, which were recently reopened after weeks of lockdown amid the battle against Covid-19. But NASA did not welcome any visitors to the launch site. A few dozen journalists were permitted to cover the launch from the press area at Kennedy Space Center, but strict social distancing policies and guidelines around wearing masks were implemented. Bridenstine held most briefings by telephone, for instance, and in-person interviews were conducted one-by-one with news crews.

The launch is also intended to serve as a sort of litmus test for NASA’s push to partner more extensively with the private sector.

SpaceX developed Crew Dragon under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, which, for the first time in the space agency’s history, handed over much of the design, development and testing of new human-rated spacecraft to the private sector. NASA awarded SpaceX and Boeing fixed-price contracts to get the job done, but that decision wasn’t without controversy, particularly in the Commercial Crew Program’s early days. But if the SpaceX flight is a success, it could be seen as a huge win for people at NASA who hope to rely more extensively on similar contracts to help accomplish the space agency’s goals.

Bridenstine, for example, hopes to rely heavily on private-sector partnerships to accomplish the space agency’s ambitious goal of landing US astronauts on the moon in 2024.

“Ultimately, what we’re trying to achieve is having numerous providers that are competing against each other on costs, innovation and safety. And then NASA can be a customer, one customer of many customers, and we already know that this will save a ton of money over the long term,” Bridenstine told CNN Business’ Rachel Crane.

The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC), a civil society network championing the right to quality basic education for all children, has urged the Government to ensure that all teachers undergo mandatory testing before going back to school.

A statement issued by Mr Joseph Atsu Homadzi, Interim Chair, GNECC, which was made available to the Ghana News Agency also encouraged stakeholders to liaise with the Ghana Health Service to provide mandatory temperature checks for students and teachers daily.

It said they must also ensure that school heads and teachers were trained on the use of infra-red thermometer and enforcement of handwashing protocols as well as the use of hand sanitizers.

“Put appropriate measures in place to ensure full compliance with the recommended physical distancing measure of six feet between desks in small classes. Issue guidelines on teachers student interactions while in school.”

Concerning psychosocial support for students and parents, it called for the orientation of school heads and teachers to deliver psychosocial support and educate students on the health implications of the COVID-19 in addition to regular academic sessions.

“Conduct training using radio, community information centers, and television on the use and disposal process for Personal Protective Equipment as part of continuous awareness on COVID-19 spread, symptoms, and prevention. Schools (public/private) with buses should observe social distancing as directed by the Ghana Health Service.”

Regarding monitoring and enforcement, it recommended the conduction of effective monitoring to ensure all safety protocols are observed accordingly.

It mentioned the enforcement sanctions for anyone found guilty of flouting guidelines on COVID-19 protocols.

The Coalition it was was available to discuss recommendations to cover short, medium, and long term actions that the Ghana Education Service could take; adding that the recommendations could be implemented across the country.

“We remain committed to supporting the Ministry of Education and its agencies in ensuring the delivery of quality education for every Ghanaian child.”

  • NDC can demonstrate all they want but EC’s decision won’t change – Kweku Baako

Abdul Malik Kweku Baako, Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide, has jumped to the defence of the Electoral Commission, stressing that nothing can change the Commission’s decision on the voters’ register.

The Electoral Commission’s decision is to compile a new voters’ register and has petitioned Parliament to amend Constitutional Instrument (C.I) 91 to legitimize the Ghana card and Ghanaian passport as the only legal documents to be used for the registration exercise.

The EC’s decision has been met by intense opposition from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) which says the Commission wants to disenfranchise 11 million Ghanaian electorates, hence their decision to use only the Ghana card and Ghanaian passport for the registration exercise.

The NDC has also accused the EC of planning to rig this year’s elections in favour of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Although the EC called for an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting with all political parties on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 to discuss issues regarding the compilation of a new voters’ register, the NDC boycotted the meeting on principle that they are opposed to a new register.

The party has also dragged the EC to the Supreme Court praying the court for an order to direct the Commission to include “all existing voter identification cards duly issued by the 2nd Defendant (EC) as one of the documents serving as proof of identification for registration as a voter for the purposes of public elections”.

But to Kweku Baako, the opposition by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not bear any fruits.

According to him, the NDC may choose to boycott IPAC meeting but they still will have no option to meet the EC in an inter-party meeting even if the Commisison to rescind their decision for a new voters’ register and rather go for a limited registration exercise.

“Look, you don’t have a choice. They don’t have the luxury of an alternative. They must meet,” he said in reference to the EC/IPAC meeting for which the NDC was to attend.

Again, to him, the NDC should focus on their court case against the EC and stop giving commentaries on the sidelines regarding the Commission’s decision if the party doesn’t want to be involved in the IPAC meeting.

He however strongly believed the EC will go ahead with what it’s constitutionally right for them to do with or without the NDC’s consent.

“Demonstrations are legitimate. It’s an option available. Protests of all kinds…sitting on radio and television and talking and criticizing and arguing, all those are options the democratic dispensation allows but none of them can change the EC’s decision,” he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’.

  • Rain or shine, 2020 elections will come off – Kweku Baako

The Electoral Commission (EC) has come under a barrage of criticisms by opposition parties over their decision to compile a new voters’ register.

While the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is objecting to the decision and claiming the EC wants to disenfranchise 11 million Ghanaian electorates and rig this year’s elections to favour President Nana Akufo-Addo, other opponents have also argued that it is not safe for the EC to go ahead with the registration exercise because of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

With all these concerns over the country’s electoral system, the question arises that will the 2020 elections come off then?

Seasoned journalist, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako has offered an answer saying come rain or sunshine, the 7th December polls will be held by the Electoral Commission.

According to him, no opposition or challenge whatsoever will stop this year’s elections but called on the EC to adequately prepare themselves ensuring appropriate measures are put in place for the voters to observe the health protocols regarding the COVID-19.

Kweku Baako shared a realistic view that the pandemic is far from over and so he anticipates it will linger on till the end of the year, nonetheless it cannot hold back the elections.

“We all know that whether we like it or not, we will hold the elections on 7th December. Nobody should ignore that fact. If it is possible to defer the elections, then we can say we can toy around with certain ideas. But there is one thing that we cannot change; it’s immutable, the 7th December 2020 elections. Rain or shine, it will come off,” he said on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ programme.

  • No police officer in Eastern region has coronavirus Regional Commander

Eastern Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Afful Boakye Yiadom, has revealed that none of his officers in the region has contracted the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) disease.

“No infection has also been recorded among the prisoners in our custody,” he added.

DCOP Boakye Yiadom was speaking during the launch of the disinfection and fumigation exercise of police facilities in his region.

According to him, the command has strictly adhered to all the safety protocols since the outbreak of Covid-19.

That, he said, was to ensure a Covid-19 free of his officers, their families, and inmates in the various cells throughout the region.

“I am, therefore, confident that the fumigation and disinfection exercise which is about to start in all our facilities will further enhance our protection against the virus,” he gladly expressed.

The exercise, he disclosed, will be carried out in all the regional headquarters formations, eight divisions, thirty-five (35) districts, and one hundred and six (106) police stations including various cells across the region.

In this regard, DCOP Boakye Yiadom said police officers in the region have been directed to allow Zoomlion Ghana Limited easy access to their facilities.

For his part, the Eastern Regional Minister, Eric Kwakye Darfour, whose speech was read on his behalf by his Deputy, Samuel Nuertey Ayertey, stressed the need for residents in the region to take the Covid-19 safety protocols serious.

He intimated that the Covid-19 disease was real, adding that “the best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the Covid-19 virus, its causes and how it spreads.”

According to him, the region has recorded 118 cases with 88 recoveries as of Wednesday, May 27, 2020.

He said the virus that causes Covid-19 infects people of all ages.

“However, evidence to date suggests that two groups of people are at a higher risk of getting severe Covid-19 disease.”

These, he said, were older people (above age 60) and those with underlying medical conditions.

Public Jobs Manager, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Eastern Region, Faustina Shardey, explained that the collaboration between the Ghana Police Service and her outfit was crucial, especially as the police were one of the frontline workers in the Covid-19 fight.

She said the company will use six days to disinfect police facilities in the region.

  • ‘We will not allow EC boss to rig elections for Akufo-Addo’ – NDC former candidate

The 2016 Parliamentary candidate for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Jomoro Constituency of the Western Region, Mr. Thomas Yankey popularly known as ‘Nobody’ has indicated that his party will not sit aloof and allow EC boss Jean Mensa to rig the upcoming General Elections for President Akufo-Addo and NPP.

His comment follows his National Chairman, Mr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo’s accusation levelled against the Electoral Commission (EC) to rig the upcoming elections to NPP.

According to the NDC National Chairman, the Commission’s quest to compile a new register is a grand scheme to favour President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party to rig the elections.

He alleged that the EC wants to achieve this aim by disenfranchising 11 million Ghanaian electorates, hence the Commission’s plan to use only the Ghana card and passport for the registration exercise.

Expressing his opinions on what is happening in Ghana about the incoming December polls, the NDC 2016 Parliamentary Candidate Thomas Yankey told Daniel Kaku that the NPP government wants to suppress the rights of Ghanaians to freely express their thoughts on important national issues.

According to him, before the current government was sworn into office, Ghana was among the best and most democratic countries in Africa, if not the world.

“Immediately the NPP took office, this adorable record Ghana had secured began experiencing ‘erosion’ with the activities of the vigilante groups culminating in unwarranted brutalities unleashed on opposition members including a sitting member of Parliament,” he noted.

“Journalists were not spared their share as they were, and continue to be subjected to physical abuse, the apex of which witnessed the assassination of a renowned investigative journalist who had put his life on the line in a bid to help uproot a canker of corruption from the country”, he added.

According to him, the trend continues with the invitation by the CID of the old man Major Boakye Gyan (Rtd), for exercising his constitutional right of freedom of expression, expressing his views on a national issue and giving wise counsel on the controversially entrenched and biased position of the EC boss, a behaviour that has the potential to plunge Ghana into a political turmoil.

“Who is blindfolded to see that the behaviour of the EC boss is gradually leading the country into chaos?”, he quizzed.

“Are we ignorant of the causes of political turmoil in Africa and elsewhere leading to military interventions? Is Ghana naturally exceptional, hence incapable of experiencing what (effects) others have experienced for behaving in the same way(s) those countries behaved?”, he added.

Mr. Thomas Yankey stressed that all these intimidations are to put fears in Ghanaians and to pave the way for the EC boss to carry on with her rigging agenda.

He added that the NDC would not allow that to happen and promised to fight for, and defend their rights as Ghanaians till their last breath.

“One thing is obvious! All these are intimidations to put fears in Ghanaians to pave the way for the EC boss to carry on with her rigging agenda, but it’s a lie! We are prepared to fight for, and defend our rights as Ghanaians till our last breath, no amount of intimidation will quench the perpetual fire of freedom fighting and defence”, he emphasized.

He stated that “In any case, all these intimidations seem to suggest that the Nana Addo-government is nurturing Public Silence and this MUST STOP! Citizens’ rights are protected under the Constitution and are sacred”.

Mr. Thomas Yankey, therefore, seized the opportunity to bash the National Peace Council for failing to exercise their duty by calling the Electoral Commission to order.

“To the Peace Council, it is unfortunate that a supposedly reputable institution like this is allowing itself to be manipulated and misled by the whims and caprices of a few political actors who are in (probably temporary) leadership, thereby rendering the Council insignificant. This is exemplified by the biased behaviour some of your top leaders have exhibited since the assumption of office of the current government”, he fumed.

“It is advisable that the Council defines itself clearly, knows and also let Ghanaians know what it stands for – whether it is a subsidiary arm of the NPP government or it serves the interest of the country in which sense it should be neutral in all issues affecting the nation. The Council should demonstrate without any possibility of ambiguity that it really, is a neutral and Peace-seeking Organization”, he added.

He reiterated, “That is the only way by which it will be accorded the respect it deserves that will enable it to play a meaningful role in the current issue involving the obsession of the EC boss with accomplishing the NPP’s rigging agenda and the opposition’s determination to resist that illegality at ‘any cost’.”

He is, however, pleading with all Ghanaians to pray their part to protect the only Ghana they have, “As Ghanaians, let us all play our part to protect the ONLY Ghana we have”.

Information gathered by DGN Online indicates that a prison officer at the Tamale Central Prison has tested positive for COVID-19.

This follows a random testing exercise launched by the northern regional health directorate.

The exercise started with vendors and inmates of the Tamale Central Prison.

The random testing is expected to give the directorate a fair idea of the level of the virus in the region.

The Northern Regional Health Director, Dr. John B. Eleeza, who confirmed the incident to DGN Online said the officer traveled to Accra before the result came out.

He however revealed that the authorities at the Ghana Prison Service were informed and the officer is currently undergoing treatment in Accra.

“They are taking care of the officer at their level in Accra.”

This positive case is part of the 36 cases recorded in the Northern Region with one death.

  • EU proposes huge €750bn ‘recovery fund’

The European Commission has proposed a massive €750bn (£670bn; $825bn) recovery fund to help the EU tackle an “unprecedented crisis”.

The package will be made up of grants and loans for every EU member state.

Economies across the 27-nation EU bloc have been ravaged by the Covid-19 pandemic, but several southern states had big debts even before the crisis.

Some countries – among them Austria, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden – are opposed to taking on debt for other countries, and think the relief should come as low-interest loans rather than cash handouts.

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen will have to win over these sceptical member states to push the plan through.

  • UN: Sea crews must be labelled key workers

A number of UN agencies have called for urgent action to designate sea and air crews as key workers.

In a joint statement, the UN’s maritime, labour and aviation agencies said that worldwide travel restrictions had left crews stranded around the world.

It said a key worker designation would allow crews on board vessels, such as fishing boats and cargo ships, to more easily changeover and return home.

“We are seeking the support of governments to facilitate crew changes, operations essential to maintain the global cargo supply chain,” the statement said.

It added that by next month tens of thousands of seafarers will need international flights to be repatriated safely. It said that many had extended their service on board ships because they cannot be replaced.

  • Who is still using hydroxychloroquine?

Claims that hydroxychloroquine could prove a viable treatment for Coronavirus have been dealt a new blow after France stopped doctors from using the anti-malarial drug for Covid-19 patients. But where is it still being used and who is continuing to research it?

In the US, the Food and Drug Administration allowed “emergency use” in hospital settings, but warned against using to treat Covid-19 in other settings – apart from clinical trials – because of the risks of heart problems.

Brazil has relaxed restrictions on the drug, allowing it to be used in mild cases as well as for those seriously ill in hospital.

And the Indian government has expanded its use as a preventative medicine to all healthcare workers

No clinical study has recommended the drug for coronavirus treatment and the World Health Organization this week temporarily suspended its trials over safety fears.

But other studies are under way, including one by Swiss drugmaker Novartis in the US and a global study by the University of Oxford-backed Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit in Thailand.

Also, Nigeria has vowed to press ahead with clinical trials of the related drug chloroquine despite the WHO decision.

  • Man charged over deadly fire at Kyoto animation studio

Police in Japan has charged a man 10 months after he allegedly set fire to an animation studio in Kyoto, killing 36 people.

Shinji Aoba, 42, had been in hospital since the arson attack in July 2019. He was so badly burned that police had been unable to question him until now.

Dozens of more people were injured during the fire, which Mr Aoba has reportedly confessed to starting.

Kyoto Animation was well-known for series like K-On and Violet Evergarden.

The incident was described at the time by Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as “too appalling for words”.

A police statement said Mr Aoba has been moved from a Kyoto hospital to police headquarters, but his injuries have left him unable to walk.

Eyewitnesses say he used petrol from two large containers to set fire to the ground floor of the animation studio. The building was filled with animation materials and was rapidly engulfed in flames.

Many of the 36 who died were young animators trapped on the upper floor.

Some reports have suggested he bore a grudge against the studio, accusing it of plagiarising his own work.

  • Coronavirus: Boris Johnson to face senior MPs amid cummings row

Boris Johnson will be questioned by senior MPs later amid continued calls for his top adviser to resign.

The prime minister will appear before the Commons Liaison Committee for 90 minutes, during which he will be asked about Dominic Cummings’ controversial lockdown trip to County Durham.

Around 40 Tory MPs have called for Mr Cummings to resign or be fired after his 260-mile journey came to light.

But cabinet minister Robert Jenrick told the BBC it was “time to move on”.

Wednesday’s session, due to begin at 16.00 BST, will be the first time that the PM has faced questions from MPs since the allegations against Mr Cummings emerged at the end of last week.

The bulk of the hearing will be devoted to the government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, including testing, PPE, schools and the economy, with the section on Mr Cummings’ actions due to last less than 30 minutes.

On Wednesdays Mr Johnson would ordinarily face Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer at Prime Minister’s Questions, but MPs are currently on recess.

Mr Cummings’ decision in March to drive from his London home to his parents’ farm in County Durham with his wife – who had coronavirus symptoms – and his son has dominated the headlines since the story broke on Friday night.

The PM’s chief adviser gave a news conference on Monday, explaining that he decided to make the trip because he felt it would be better to self-isolate in a place where he had options for childcare if required.

He has received the continued support of the prime minister, who said that his aide had acted legally and with integrity.

But cross-party critics have called for Mr Cummings to leave No 10, while junior minister Douglas Ross resigned in protest.

Boris Johnson seems determined not to change his mind and determined to cling on to Dominic Cummings.

The PM’s calculation is a simple one – that we will all move on, with journalists and angry Conservative MPs finding other issues to focus on.

There are an awful lot of very important coronavirus challenges coming down the track – whether schools will go back on Monday, whether test, track and trace is going to be rolled out effectively, whether we get 200,000 tests by the end of the month.

And although about 40 or so Tory MPs have pretty much demanded that Mr Cummings should walk the plank, there’s been no organised campaign to crank up the pressure on the PM to get rid of him, and no big beast – a cabinet minister or the like – demanding he goes.

So, Boris Johnson seems determined to tough it out and take the hit in terms of public opinion.

But does it risk public anger turning into a public readiness to flout some of those locked down rules? Might people say: “I’ll do a Cummings – I’ll interpret the rules in my own way”?

That is perhaps the most serious side to this whole saga.

Sir Bob Neill, Tory MP for Bromley and Chislehurst, is among those calling for Mr Cummings to resign, saying the row had become a “distraction”.

He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme Mr Cummings had “real talents and abilities” but “no adviser is indispensable”.

However, in a note to fellow MPs, Danny Kruger, former political secretary to Mr Johnson and now Tory MP for Devizes, said demanding the resignation of Mr Cummings was “basically declaring no confidence in the PM”.

In response, Sir Bob said he didn’t accept this, adding: “This is actually about us wanting to help the prime minister to get back to be able to focus on the key task of pulling the country together.”

  • Chrissy Teigen posts decision to remove breast implants

American model Chrissy Teigen will have surgery to remove her breast implants, she has posted on social media.

“I’m getting my boobs out! They’ve been great to me for many years but I’m just over it,” she wrote on Instagram.

Her honest explanation won praise online with many sending their best wishes in advance of the procedure.

Mrs. Teigen, 34, is also an author and TV personality and is known for her no-nonsense posts about family, politics, and Hollywood.

Mrs. Teigen, who is married to singer John Legend, said she will soon take a coronavirus test to prepare for the surgery.

She explained her decision to remove the implants on Instagram, where she has almost 30m followers.

“I’d like to be able to zip a dress in my size, lay on my belly with pure comfort!” she wrote.

“Don’t worry about me! All good. I’ll still have boobs, they’ll just be pure fat.”

In March Mrs Teigen told Glamour magazine that she got the implants when she was 20 for a job modelling swimsuits.

“But then you have babies and they fill up with milk and deflate and now I am screwed,” she told Glamour.

Her latest decision was applauded online including by model Naomi Campbell who wrote “be safe”.

“Have a safe surgery, babe. And thanks for always being so transparent! The world needs more of that,” replied Milly Almodovar, a popular beauty editor.

“Life changing, you’re gonna love it,” commented Canadian actress Ayesha Curry, adding that she made the same decision last year because her implants made her “sick”.

Mrs Teigen’s social media posts frequently make headlines.

She and her husband are both vocal critics of US President Donald Trump.

In 2019 Mr Trump called her “filthy-mouthed” in a tweet that also called her husband “boring” after Mr Legend spoke on TV about the need for criminal justice reform.

Mrs. Teigen’s response to the president went viral with an expletive-filled hashtag.

The mother-of-two is also known for posting pictures from her family life and trying to destigmatize issues such as breastfeeding.

In 2018 she was praised for posting a picture of her breastfeeding her baby on social media.

“Luna (Mrs. Teigen’s daughter) making me feed her baby doll so I guess I have twins now,” she wrote on Instagram.

And she also posted a picture of her son wearing a head-shaping helmet for the first time. The helmets are used to treat plagiocephaly and brachycephaly or flat head syndrome.

  • Landlords threaten health workers with ejection

Landlords at New Edubiase in the Adansi South District are threatening to eject health workers from their houses for fear of being infected with the deadly coronavirus.

Dr Allah Tiertoore, Medical Superintendent of the New Edubiase government hospital, who made this known said the incessant threats of ejection was affecting the moral of the health workers in the community.

Dr Tiertoore made this known when Oguahyia Oduro Panin Birikorang, the chief of New Edubiase presented quantities of Personal Protective Equipment to the facility and the community to support the fight against the spread of the virus.

He said stigmatization associated with the disease was becoming too much in the area and appealed to the chief to intervene to prevent the landlords from carrying out their threat.

Dr Tiertoore said the items would motivate the health workers to continue with their hard work to provide quality health care to the people.

He urged the landlords to follow the good steps of the chief and support health workers to contain the further spread of the disease in the area instead of threatening them with ejections.

Oguahyia Oduro Panin Birikorang, said the items which included; hand sanitizers, gloves, Veronica buckets, liquid soaps and others, were to support the frontline health workers and the people in the community to protect themselves against catching and spreading the virus in the area.

Adansi South district had already confirmed three cases of the coronavirus and the increasing spread of the virus in Obuasi, a neighbouring district makes it imperative for all key stakeholders, including; the traditional authorities, to put their acts together to stop further spread of the virus in the area.

Oguahyia Birikorang said he was worried about the outbreak of the virus in the district and the spread from Obuasi.

The only solution, according to him was for the people to adhere to all the preventive and restrictive protocols to stay safe and prevent further spread.

He appealed to landlords to stop the threat since the health workers were in the community in their own interest.

The chief also appealed to the people to make maximum use of the items by washing their hands regularly and observe social distancing by avoiding other activities that could expose them to the virus.

  • Trump gave us the ultimate endorsement – dancing pallbearer

Ghanaian Benjamin Aidoo, the leader of the troupe of dancing pallbearers who have become a global sensation because of a viral meme, is happy that US President Donald Trump has shared footage of the dancers.

In a Facebook post, Mr Trump re-posted a video that had been doctored to show the pallbearers dancing with a coffin that had the words “Biden president” written on the side.

Joe Biden is likely to be Mr Trump’s challenger in November’s election.

Mr Aidoo told the BBC’s Sulley Lansah that he saw the president’s Facebook post as the “ultimate endorsement” of his work.

He felt that the whole world will now see the post and it could open many doors for him.

In 2017 the dancing pallbearers went viral following BBC Africa’s coverage of their flamboyant coffin-carrying dances, garnering millions of views.

Three years later and the group has experienced a second round of internet fame, with social media users adopting the troupe as a dark-humoured symbol of death in the time of Covid-19.

Mr Aidoo said that he still cannot believe how popular his video has become and he keeps getting calls and granting interviews from all over the world.

  • Bulgarian police seize $44 million worth of cocaine from apartment

Bulgarian police on Wednesday seized more than $43 million worth of cocaine from an apartment in the capital Sofia, occupied by a man who was detained a day earlier after police found 40 kg of the drug in his car, prosecutors said in a statement.

A total of 327 packages, weighing about 1 kg each and marked with car logos and playing cards, were found, they said.

Police said that the high-purity cocaine with an estimated street value of more than 40 million euros ($44 million) had been mainly destined for Western Europe and Asia.

“Only a small part was to be sold in Bulgaria,” senior police commissioner Georgi Hadzhiev said. “Considering the upcoming summer season, about 35-40 kg were for the Bulgarian market.”

Bulgaria, a Balkan country with a population of fewer than 7 million, has long served as a key route for smugglers moving goods between Europe and southwest Asia.

  • French power couple lose money laundering appeal

A French political power couple lost their appeal Wednesday against a money laundering conviction, capping a fall from grace spurred by accusations they illegally pocketed millions of euros in public funds while in office.

Patrick and Isabelle Balkany, right-wing politicians who for years governed the chic Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret, were sentenced to prison terms of five and four years respectively.

But they were not ordered behind bars immediately pending an appeal to France’s highest court. Patrick Balkany had been released to house arrest in February because of health problems.

The two had already lost in March an appeal against tax fraud convictions after they were found guilty of using offshore accounts to hide at least 13 million euros ($14.4 million) in assets from the tax authorities, including luxury villas in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh and in the West Indies.

On Wednesday, the appeals court confirmed the seizure of assets as well as the payment of one million euros ($1.1 million) in damages, saying the couple had implemented a system of “persistent fraud”.

Patrick Balkany, 71, who appeared in the Paris courtroom without his wife, made no comment after the decision.

His lawyer Romain Dieudonne said he had five days to decide on a further appeal, while his wife’s lawyer Pierre-Olivier Sur told reporters the ruling was “excessive.”

The jail terms handed down last year – extremely rare for French politicians – were widely heralded as proof that the legal system no longer shirks from holding the powerful to account.

Patrick Balkany was first elected mayor of Levallois-Perret in 1983 and also held a seat in parliament for many years.

A larger-than-life figure with a penchant for cigars, he was a close friend of former president Nicolas Sarkozy and the late rocker Johnny Hallyday, and was credited with spurring an economic revival in the city.

But critics said the couple was making themselves rich at the same time, and prosecutors opened an investigation in 2013 after a former political ally told judges he had deposited millions of euros for the couple in Swiss bank accounts.

The couple had argued that their wealth was mainly inherited – Isabelle’s Tunisian Jewish father made a fortune in rubber production while Patrick’s father, an Auschwitz survivor, founded a luxury clothing chain in post-war Paris.

Both had already been handed suspended prison sentences in 1996 for the personal use of municipal employees, including one employed as their private chauffeur.

  • Coronavirus: Denmark opens borders to divided lovers

Denmark has opened its borders to couples who were separated from their partners by the coronavirus lockdown.

As of Monday, cross-border couples who reside in the Nordic countries or Germany can now visit Denmark.

Rules currently require people to prove their relationship with photos, text messages and emails.

But the justice minister has announced these regulations will be relaxed in the coming days, so all that is needed is a letter signed by both parties.

“If you say you are a boyfriend and sign [the letter], we will assume it [is true],” Justice minister Nick Hækkerup told broadcaster TV2.

A number of European countries are considering reopening Europe’s internal borders as the outbreak eases.

Germany has proposed allowing travel to all 26 other EU states plus the UK and non-EU countries like Iceland and Norway that are in the border-free Schengen zone from 15 June. The EU has issued guidance on how best to lift restrictions on travel.

But many restrictions remain in place. Several people have told the BBC about their frustration with ongoing rules about partners even as countries ease their lockdown measures.

What are the rules? Currently, the authorities say people must give the name, address and contact details of their partner in Denmark, as well as phone records, photos and text histories to prove the relationship.

Permanent residents of Finland, Iceland, Germany, Norway and Sweden all qualify, provided their partner is a resident of Denmark.

Police also said this applies only to people in serious relationships, which they defined as of roughly six months – with actual face-to-face meetings and not purely online or via the phone.

Opposition parties, however, criticised the stringent rules, prompting a government rethink. While they are sticking to the guidance about “serious” relationships, partners will simply need to sign a piece of paper declaring this is the case, and will be allowed to enter the country.

“Although the other parties are in opposition, they can sometimes say sensible things – and I always listen to the other parties,” Mr Hækkerup said.

The rules also say anyone from Germany or the Nordic countries who owns a holiday home in Denmark can come to the country.

The new regulations will be good news for thousands of separated couples.

One pair who caught the world’s attention when the outbreak hit Europe in March were octogenarians Inga Rasmussen from Denmark and Karsten Tüchsen Hansen from Germany.

Both have been travelling to the border town of Aventoft to chat and share a drink, sitting at the recommended safe distance.

But there are many others who remain separated from their partners by borders.

Some in Denmark have created a Facebook group, Girlfriends Separated by Border Closures, for those affected under the lockdown.

Carl Gustav Gylling, a 23-year-old student from Copenhagen, has not seen his Swiss girlfriend since the start of March. Though he supported the lockdown initially, Mr Gylling told the BBC he was growing frustrated with European governments discussing opening borders to tourists and international business, but not for partners to frequently visit one another.

“I’m more than sure right now that couples would do anything to see each other,” he said in emailed comments. “Even going into a three-week quarantine [on arrival], which would solve basically all problems.”

Christian Trampedach – separated from his girlfriend, who lives in Brazil – said the government had “equated couples and tourists” during discussions about ending the lockdown.

“I dare to say that being away from your loved ones causes more emotional distress than being forced to skip another summer vacation,” he said.

Donny ter Heide is a 24-year-old project engineer living in Enschede in the Netherlands. His girlfriend Mira lives in Copenhagen, and they have not seen each other since 16 February.

They chat daily on the phone and online, and use Skype at least once a week. He told the BBC the worst part was not having “a timeframe” for things to go back to normal.

“We would just like to know when we’re able to see each other and what the rules will be if we visit one another, like, do we need to stay in quarantine or anything,” he said. “It is making it very hard on both of us.”

Laila Svanholmer agrees. Her boyfriend lives in California in the US, and she told the BBC that not knowing when she might see him again was “unbearable”.

“It’s frustrating, stressful and heartbreaking to be forcefully separated from the person you love,” she said, describing the border closures as “entirely political decisions”, and not medical ones.

She also questioned why tourists with holiday homes could visit and not partners. “They come here to spend a week or two at the beach. How can that be more essential than visiting a loved one?”

US President Donald Trump imposed a travel ban on 26 European countries in March, a move met with anger and confusion in the EU.

  • FBI to investigate death of black man in Minnesota after arrest

The FBI will investigate the death of a black man in the US state of Minnesota after a video emerged showing a policeman kneeling on his neck.

In the footage, the man, believed to be in his 40s, is heard groaning and repeatedly saying “I can’t breathe” to the white officer.

The Minneapolis Police Department said it was responding to a reported crime.

The incident echoed that of Eric Garner, a black man who died being arrested in 2014.

Garner was placed in a chokehold and uttering the words “I can’t breathe” nearly a dozen times.

The phrase became a rallying cry for activists protesting alleged police brutality against people of colour in the US.

The Minnesota Police admitted that the man in the footage filmed on Monday died after a “medical incident” in a “police interaction”.

He was suspected of committing a forgery, meaning to have been fraudulently altering or making a false reproduction of a product.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey described the incident as “completely and utterly messed up”.

“I believe what I saw and what I saw is wrong on every level,” Mr Frey said. “Being black in America should not be a death sentence.”

It is the latest accusation of US police brutality against African Americans. Recent high-profile cases include an officer in Maryland who fatally shot a man inside a patrol car.

The incident in Minneapolis on Monday evening began after officers located the man in his car, police said in a statement. They were told the man, who has not been identified, was “sitting on top of a blue car and appeared to be under the influence”.

After being ordered to step away from the vehicle, the man physically resisted officers, according to police. “Officers were able to get the suspect into handcuffs and noted he appeared to be suffering medical distress,” the statement added.

In the 10-minute video filmed by a witness, the man is kept on the ground by the officer and, at one point, says: “Don’t kill me”.

Witnesses urged the officer to take his knee off the man’s neck, noting that he was not moving. One says, “His nose is bleeding”, while another pleads, “Get off his neck.”

The man then appears motionless before he is put on a stretcher and into an ambulance.

Police said no weapons were used during the incident and that body camera footage had been handed to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, which is investigating the case. Two of the officers involved have been put on paid administrative leave.

After the video emerged, police said in a statement: “As additional information has been made available, it has been determined that the Federal Bureau of Investigations will be a part of this investigation.”

Speaking to US media on Tuesday, Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo said the force’s policies “regarding placing someone under control” will be reviewed as part of the probe.

The FBI did not respond to a request for comment.

Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar – reportedly shortlisted as Joe Biden’s running mate – issued a statement calling for a “complete and thorough outside investigation.”

“Justice must be served for this man and his family, justice must be served for our community, justice must be served for our country,” she said.

“I can’t breathe” became a national rallying cry against police brutality in the US after the July 2014 death of Eric Garner.

Garner, an unarmed black man, uttered the phrase 11 times after being detained by police on suspicion of illegally selling loose cigarettes. They were the final words of the 43-year-old, who died after a police officer placed him in a chokehold.

A city medical examiner ruled the chokehold contributed to Garner’s death. The New York City police officer involved in Garner’s deadly arrest was fired from the police force more than five years later, in August 2019.
