  • Student jailed for extortion over policewomans nude pictures

A Circuit Court in Accra has sentenced a 24-year-old student, Francis Aggrey, to three years imprisonment for extortion in his bid to circulate nude videos of his girlfriend, a policewoman.

Aggrey, who was charged with two counts of conspiracy to crime and extortion, pleaded guilty.

The court, presided over by Mr Emmanuel M. Essandoh, convicted Aggrey on his own plea and sentenced him to three years imprisonment on a charge of extortion. An accomplice, Christian Donkor, is at large.

Prosecution, however, prayed the court that the police would need Aggrey to assist to apprehend his accomplice.

The court, therefore, deferred its sentence on a charge of conspiracy.

Detective Sergeant Frederick Sarpong told the court that Aggrey cited jealousy as reasons for extorting GHC3,000.00 from her girlfriend.

The 24-year-old convict, according to the prosecution, suspected that the girl-friend was cheating on him, hence he plotted with Donkor, his accomplice, to extort GHC3,000.00 from her.

Detective Sergeant Sarpong said the complainant, a policewoman, and Aggrey had been in an amorous affair for some time and on May 15, this year, Aggrey suspected she was cheating on him.

The convict then created an online chatting account on Telegram with the name ‘Nana N’ and portrayed himself as another person and started chatting with the complainant.

“In the course of the chatting, Aggrey posted the complainant’s nude pictures and videos to her and demanded an amount of GHC3,000.00 else he would circulate the pictures and videos on social media,” Detective Sergeant Sarpong said.

Aggrey then forwarded the nude pictures and videos to Donkor to press on the complainant to pay the money and Donkor, on receipt of the nude pictures and videos, forwarded same to the complainant to hasten with the payment else he would circulate them.

Prosecution said, the complainant reported the incident to her boss who disguised himself and chatted with the accused persons.

During Donkor’s chat with the disguised boss, he (Donkor) gave the mobile money number 0595063915 to him to pay GHc1,500.00 on Friday, May 15, else he would circulate the nude videos.

On the same day, the complainant’s boss made payment of GHc1,500.00 to Donkor through the said mobile money account. The boss, upon interrogation, suspected that Aggrey was behind the deal and asked the complainant to confront him.

On May 18, this year, the complainant confronted Aggrey and he admitted and cited jealousy as his reason for doing that.

Aggrey was arrested on May 19 and handed over to the Bureau of National Investigations and the National Security.

During interrogation he mentioned Donkor as his accomplice, who efforts were being made to arrest.

  • Four Nigerians arrested for illegal entry and bribery

Personnel of Sogakope Inland Immigration Checkpoint of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) have arrested three Nigerians for illegal entry into Ghana.

The Nigerians; Emmanuel Christopher, Chukuma Onyiauka, and Sylvia Jamaho entered the country with the assistance of some Togolese nationals through an unapproved route at the eastern frontier but were intercepted at the Sogakope Inland Immigration Checkpoint.

David Jamaho, who claimed to be the brother of Sylvia, was also arrested for allegedly trying to bribe the Immigration Officials, a statement signed by Superintendent Michael Amoako-Atta, the Head of Public Affairs of the GIS, said on Tuesday.

The Commander of the Sogakope Inland Immigration Checkpoint, Chief Superintendent of Immigration (CSI) Shadrach Asangeokwa, explained that when the three Nigerians were being processed to be handed over to the Aflao Sector Command, David Jamaho showed up and allegedly offered 5,000 dollars bribe for the sister to be released, but that was rejected by the officers.

  • Old Tafo Assembly supports 16 more PWDs to start their businesses

The Old Tafo Municipal Assembly has presented various items to 16 selected Persons with Disability (PWDs) in the municipality to economically empower them.

The beneficiaries were the second batch of PWDs to be supported in one month to establish their businesses after the same number also received similar support early this month.

The procurement of the items presented to each beneficiary was based on their preferences following a need assessment conducted by the assembly through the Department of Social Welfare.

The items worth GH¢ 27,200 included deep freezers, carpentry tools, fabrics, soft drinks, mattresses, welding machines, and industrial sewing machines.

Mr. Fred Obeng Owusu, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) who presented the items at a brief ceremony, said PWDs formed part of society and must not be left behind under any circumstance.

He said it was imperative to empower them to economically contribute to national development rather than leaving them to beg for alms on the streets.

“It is the vision of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to improve the livelihoods of PWDs and all vulnerable groups by introducing specific interventions to make them economically independent” the MCE said.

He said the assembly had captured the data of PWDs in the municipality and was engaging them to set them up in various businesses of their choice.

To ensure the sustainability of their businesses, the MCE said, a committee had been put in place to occasionally monitor the progress of their businesses.

Mr. Owusu said the assembly was committed to prioritizing the welfare of PWDs in the municipality by extending the support to those who were yet to benefit and urged the beneficiaries to grow their businesses to justify the investment made in them.

  • Ghana has no record of reinfection of coronavirus

Dr Badu Sarkodie, the Director of Public Health, Ghana Health Service (GHS), on Tuesday said the country has not recorded any cases of reinfections of the COVID-19.

He said although there had been some concerns raised about some Chinese health workers who had tested positive for the disease, pronounced as recovered by health experts, but later tested positive again, Ghana had no evidence of any such case.

He said it was a fact that several Ghanaian health workers had been infected and were being taken good care of, but there was no evidence of reinfection among those who had recovered.

Dr Sarkodie, at the Minister’s press briefing in Accra, indicated that a lot of work was being done to protect health workers, who were risking their lives to fight the pandemic.

He said the country’s current recovery rate was slowly increasing, and the rate of infections slowing down as evidenced in the decreases in hospitalisation over the past week.

Dr Sarkodie attributed the successes to the strict measures Ghana had implemented right from the beginning of the outbreak.

He said the measures led to the massive containment of the virus, stopping its devastating impact as witnessed in other countries, saying those efforts had since been sustained to halt community spread.

He noted that the fact that the virus was no respecter of persons and thrived on infected surfaces for several hours, there was the need for sustained regular cleansing of those surfaces.

Dr Sarkodie said that called for the need to strictly adhere to the preventive measures, which included the regular cleansing of items such as telephones, door handles, pens, table surfaces and washrooms.

He stated that apart from the regular office space, factories and other informal workplaces, the health facility setting was one key risk area for picking up infections and people must be extra careful in their visit to such places.

Dr Sarkodie, however, said there was currently no evidence or demonstration of healthcare workers being responsible for spreading COVID-19 in their communities.

“These health professionals have been professionally trained to be able to handle or contain the virus and other infections and keep them at bay, so they do not spread to other people.”

He said Ghana had also put in place other stringent mechanisms to ensure that places such as the prisons could prevent infections and had quarantine centres to hold infected persons should there be any positive cases, since the impact could be massive.

Meanwhile, Ghana has recorded 7,117 positive cases of COVID-19 as at May 26, 2020, with 2,317 recoveries and 34 deaths.

  • Upper East residents happy over coronavirus recoveries

Out of the 26 recorded cases of COVID-19 in the Upper East Region, 20 have recovered and have been discharged from the treatment Centre in Bolgatanga.

Madam Tangoba Abayage, the Upper East Regional Minister confirmed this to the Ghana News Agency took to her Facebook page to announce that: “I have great news, Upper East Region! 20 out of the 26 cases of COVID-19 in the Region have recovered.

“We thank God and all who have helped to make this possible, they’re part of us and need love; not stigma!”

Out of the 26 COVID-19 cases recorded in the region, two died while four were managed at home.

Some residents in Bolgatanga, the Regional capital, which had 18 positive recorded cases expressed joy and gratitude to God for His intervention and said they were happy that the infected persons had recovered and were discharged.

Ms Sophia Akumagoa Bawa, a teacher in the Municipality said: “It is refreshing news to hear that the Region has made some remarkable recoveries and it is my prayer that the remaining patients will also recover soon.”

She insisted that despite the recovery rate, residents should not relent on the Ghana Health Service protocols, which according to her had the potential to completely eradicate the virus from the Region and country so they could return to school for normal academic activities.

A Nigerian motorbike spare parts dealer in Bolgatanga, Mr Joseph Ugwu, said business had slowed down since the Region recorded its first case of the virus, “Our businesses have not been the same when the Region recorded its case, it was better at the time the Region had not recorded any case.”

“On Saturday for instance, I sat in my shop the whole day. No one even passed by to greet me let alone buy something. I hope that with the recoveries in the Region and entire country, businesses will return to normal,” he said.

“God is at work, He has begun His work. If 20 COVID-19 patients in the Region have recovered we thank God. The virus is gradually leaving us.” Ms Maria Ramani, a sales lady said.

A victim of the virus, who recovered, spoke to the GNA in an interview on condition of anonymity and said: “As for me, I have not experienced any stigma from people who knew I was infected in my community.”

The victim, who is a health professional, however, expressed worry that colleague health professionals, who were expected to know better, were rather the ones exhibiting some form of stigma towards her when they met her.

According to the recovered COVID-19 victim, “They should know better, but they are rather trying to stigmatize me. It is unfortunate, but I am fine, my community and family have shown me, love.”

  • Election 2020: Jean Mensa repeating Charlotte Oseis mistakes Odike

Founder and leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Akwasi Addai Odike has faulted the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa for wallowing in the same mistakes that led to the dismissal of her predecessor, Madam Charlotte Osei.

On June 28, 2018, President Akufo Addo removed from office the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Charlotte Osei, and her two deputies, Mr. Amadu Sulley and Ms. Georgina Opoku Amankwah, with immediate effect, after the Committee set up by the then Chief Justice, Justice Sophia Akuffo, pursuant to Article 146(4) of the Constitution, to investigate separate complaints brought against the three persons by Ghanaian citizens, recommended their removal from office.

A statement signed and issued by the Minister of Information at the time, Hon. Mustapha Abdul Hamid said, “The Committee recommended their removal on the basis of stated misbehaviour and incompetence, pursuant to Article 146(1) of the Constitution.”

“The provisions of Article 146(9) of the Constitution require the President of the Republic to act in accordance with the recommendations of the Committee.”

But contributing to discussions on Kumasi-based Angel FM, Mr Odike said, the Electoral Commission and its Chairperson are being “micromanaged” by the government to do its bidding of organizing elections under dangerous circumstances with a questionable new voters register, “walking in the same mistakes Madam Charlotte Osei made”.

“The concentration of the whole world is on the fight against COVID-19; the world is not normal anymore, economies are shaking so if we do not get a well grounded footing and we rush into this election haphazardly and anything triggers, Ghana would be doomed. I appeal to the Electoral Commission and the government of the day to not rush us into the election, until normal times are restored”, he said.

  • Don’t hasten to reopen schools; we need time – Prof Agyekum to Akufo-Addo

The Dean of the School of Performing Arts of the University of Ghana, Legon, Professor Kofi Agyekum is calling on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to extend the closure of schools in the country.

According to Professor Kofi Agyekum, popularly known as Opanyin Agyekum, it will be a hasty decision on the part of the government to allow schools to resume while the country is still saddled with the pandemic.

Contributing to a panel discussion on Peace FM’s ”Kokrokoo”, Opanyin Agyekum explained that although the closure of schools has been characterized by challenges because not every school child or the family of a school child can afford the digital gadgets to ensure continuous education albeit through virtual learning platforms created by the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service, thus impacting negatively on the pupil, it is not as grave as losing a life.

Opanyin Agyekum alluded to an incident that occurred in 1984 where Universities were closed for a year but the tertiary institutions bounced back afterwards to continue the academic calendar, and so believed that nothing will be destroyed if schools are not opened any time soon.

He, however, stated that should government decide school children should resume classroom lessons, adequate preparations and measures should be installed to ensure they do not contract the COVID-19 disease or the spread is curtailed in case a student is infected.

He asked the government to roll out detailed steps to ensure safety of both the school children and teachers adding that teachers should be given a psychological therapy before they go to the classrooms to teach the students.

To him, the reopening should only involve final year students and not the entire student population because, with the final year students, there will adequate classrooms to ensure social distancing.

But in his candid opinion, schools should remain closed till the pandemic curve has flattened and the country has gained strength to overcome the disease.

”We shouldn’t be in a hurry because if one child loses his or her life, we cannot bring the child back to life. It can’t be likened to closing and reopening schools. There are times that we have strikes and schools are closed for a month and the students go home but we are able to resume school too…We have to wait and check the data and science. Let’s wait when the recovery cases increase maximally and we know everything is going alright, then we can allow for the reopening of schools…We need time.” the learned professor advised.

  • COVID-19: Minister makes case for quarterly disinfection of police cells

Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan, has suggested the need for police cells in the country to be disinfected at the end of every quarter of the year.

According to him, such a move will not only keep the cells safe but also ensure that they are dignified facilities to keep human beings.

Mr Duncan made the proposal when he officially launched the Central Region disinfection and fumigation exercise of police facilities at the regional police headquarters, Cape Coast, on Tuesday.

The disinfection and fumigation exercise of police facilities across the country is a collaboration between the Ghana Police Service and Zoomlion Ghana Limited.

In all, Zoomlion will disinfect about 104 police facilities in the region.

The regional minister advised that as “a country we must not wait for disaster to strike before we take action.”

Thus, he bemoaned what he described as “degrading conditions” in most of the country’s cells.

“…because you go to our cells where people are kept on remand and it is not a good sight to behold. That is where they have their ablutions, that is where they have their sleeping place just at the same place, and nobody must ever get to the point where they will be taken to a police cell and kept even overnight,” he strongly advised.

Continuing, he lamented that conditions in the cells do not befit a place where human beings must be kept “because it takes from us our dignity.”

To this end, Mr Duncan commended the collaboration between the Interior Ministry and Zoomlion for the initiative to have all police facilities in the country disinfected.

He used the opportunity to appeal to residents, especially the fisher-folks.

“It appears many of our fisher-folks are still skeptical and hold the view that this disease is not in the country,” he worryingly expressed.

According to the minister, his outfit has had the chance to engage the fisher-folks.

…first at Elmina, where we brought all the Chief Fishermen and their elders to be engaged for them to go back to educate and engage with their people. We have gone beyond that and had another engagement at Moree–the report is still not good!” he intimated.

“So I want to use this forum to appeal that this disease is real, this disease is here in this country. They must, therefore, observe the protocols that have been laid before us,” he appealed.

Further, Mr Duncan commended the regional commander, his deputy and management for the ongoing renovation works at the command.

“I am impressed with the work being done by the current commander,” he said.

For his part, Central Regional Police Commander, Commissioner of Police (CoP) Paul Manly Awuni, disclosed that six of his personnel together with two community protection assistants have tested positive for the Covid-19 disease.

However, he said they were in an isolation centre and were being given the best of care.

“Two of the police personnel have recovered and have been discharged, the others are doing well and were in good spirits,” CoP Awuni revealed.

He stated that morale of his personnel was high despite some contracting the disease in the line of duty.

Central Regional Manager, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Ernest Osei, disclosed that his outfit has deployed about 150 spraying guns, boomers, and solo spraying machines to undertake the exercise.

According to him, the exercise will last for five days.

Immediately after the launch, Zoomlion moved into action, disinfecting the regional headquarters and then later sprayed the Bakado Police Station.

  • Media report on MPs and Parliamentary staff contracting Covid-19 is ‘speculative journalism’ – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

The leadership of Parliament has denied media reports suggesting that some Members of Parliament (MPs) and parliamentary service staff have tested positive for the coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

According to the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Majority Leader in Parliament, Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu the media report was “speculative journalism,” reports Graphic Online’s Parliamentary reporter, Nana Konadu Agyeman.

They have consequently asked for a retraction of the report published by Starr FM.

The media report published Tuesday, May 26, 2020 suggested that two MPs and 13 staff of the lawmaking chamber have tested positive for Covid-19 after results of voluntary testing requested by the Speaker trickled in.

It added that following the development, the Speaker has ordered for mandatory testing of all staff and MPs as a move to ensure effective contact tracing since MPs interact among themselves often.

But reacting to the publication at a press conference Tuesday afternoon [May 26, 2020], Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu denied and said the leadership of the House was not aware of anything of that sort.

“…anybody who tested positive, the information will not be transmitted to all of us. It is between the person and the people who did the test. Some confidentiality is required in these matters and we needed to be very circumspect.”

“The reason why we decided to do this, as I sit here, …if Kate [Addo – Director of Public Affairs at Parliament] has tested positive, I wouldn’t know, if the Clerk [of Parliament] has, if I [Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu] have, they wouldn’t know. So it is part of the agreement that we all came to, so nobody knows whether anybody has tested positive. The people who will know will be perhaps, those of them who did the test.”

“So just to emphasise the point that what that medium [media house] has done, amounts to nothing but speculation. They are only speculating that two Members have tested positive. Its speculative journalism. We would want to let you know that there is no truth in that.”

“…As Speaker indicated, because we are all here together, we are appealing to all staff in the House, all Members of Parliament and even non staff as you are [parliamentary media personnel] that everybody must subject himself or herself for your own sake and for the sake of your households, your friends and others that you come into contact with at work places and the various houses so that we are able to protect ourselves as a family within the prescints of Parliament.”

“So that is how it is, the agreement was that if anybody’s results came out positive, it will only be known to that person, be a staff, journalist or a Member of Parliament. I don’t know, the Clerk to Parliament doesn’t know, the Director of Public Affairs wouldn’t also know, so I will plead with you not to be engaging in such unhallowed speculative journalism.

It becomes difficult when you want to invite people to be here to submit themselves, if you go out there and be engaging in such speculations… it is not worthy to be engaging in that exercises. You may be succeeding unconsciously in repelling people, by discouraging people to submitting themselves, and yet we need these things for the survival of Parliament as an institution… so lets be circumspect,” Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said.

The Director of Public Affairs at Parliament, Kate Addo said the media report has created a situation of “panic amongst us.”

“As we sit now, this is very uncomfortable for us and it has created a lot of panic amongst us because we know what one person being infected in an environment like this means.”

“We recognise that media houses do have their sources and may have spoken to persons outside of Parliament but we also do want to state that as an institution we are very cautious .. and such reports tend to create fear and panic and we will like that the respected station will retract and come to us, we are ready to give them whatever information that we have and if they have very concrete information they will put it out so that we will have our peace of mind.”

  • Parliament to sanction MPs and staff who refuse Covid-19 test

The exercise forms part of measures to stop the spread of the infection among legislators and staff of the legislative body.

It has been agreed that results of the tests will not be made public.

  • Here is why this photo got people talking on the internet

It is increasingly becoming not so good an idea to be posting pictures of yourself online as netizens are becoming so elite in spotting anomalies in pictures. Any innocent post can turn out to become the talk of town once it gets into the hands of the critical eyed.

This is the same for this innocent, friendly picture above where we have the ‘Sugar Daddy’ Kidi, in between two lovely damsels – Efya and Sister Deborah. While people should be concerned about the smiles and the comrade exhibited in the photo, their eyes were caught by something else, far from the target.

It turns out that even though Kidi is all smiles in his thirty-two with similar expressions on the faces of Efya to his right and Sister Deborah to his left, there is something else going on on the inside. This unseen phenomenon going on in his body also showed an expression. It made a stick poke itself through his trouser.

I am very certain the two broadly smiling ladies were so oblivious of Kidi’s pleasant discomfort.

But a personal advice for Kidi: Stop donning stuff that might get you in trouble for fashion. A good name is better than a dope look

  • Government to finalise roadmap on easing COVID-19 restrictions by Friday Osafo-Maafo

Government is expected to finalize consultations on the easing of COVID-19 restrictions in the country, with various stakeholders on Friday, Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo-Maafo has announced.

According to him, all key stakeholders have been engaged on the roadmap.

President Nana Akufo-Addo had earlier hinted of ongoing consultations with relevant stakeholders on the form and timing for the easing of COVID-19 restrictions.

Speaking to Citi News, Yaw Osafo-Maafo said the government is working to restore the economic life of Ghana.

“We will have the final meeting on Friday to decide on the way forward. Once this disease has come in and it has affected the social structure, we need to take other steps to ensure that we need not destroy the economy, social life and health in the process. So we have to look at the best combination for the country to be safe, going on economically and socially good. So we have to put all the necessary measures in place to ensure that we go about our normal work very well by taking into consideration measures to control COVID-19.”

The Senior Minister added that: “Almost all the indefinable groups who matter in this have all had close discussions with us.  Our experts have also continued these discussions and on Friday we will put all of these together on the best advice available to make the best decision. In Europe and Germany and even France and US, they are reducing the restrictions which means that we must find a way of restoring the economic life in one way or the other bearing in mind the safety of our citizens,” he said.

Currently, there is an ongoing debate among stakeholders and the citizens about the appropriate time for schools and churches to reopen, given the circumstances of COVID-19.

While some have been pushing for the reopening of schools, others have kicked against the proposal.

Schools in Ghana have been closed since March 2020 as part of efforts to curtail the spread of COVID-19.

A ban was also placed on all public, social and religious gatherings by President Akufo-Addo as far back as March 15, 2020, as part of measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease.

When he extended the ban, the President said there was a unanimous decision with the leaders of the major interest groups that it was early to lift it.

    Nana Addo gives assurances

The President, Nana Akufo-Addo has said stakeholder consultations on easing restrictions in the country are currently ongoing.

The President said these consultations, which are expected to come to an end by the close of this week will help in defining a clear roadmap for easing restrictions.

“Stakeholder consultations are taking place on the way forward towards the easing of restrictions so that our social and economic lives can go back to normal. I expect these consultations to conclude this week so that I can announce to Ghanaians a clear roadmap for easing the restrictions. We have to find a way back, but in safety, for we cannot be under these restrictions forever,” he added.

  • UK minister quits Johnson’s government over Cummings lockdown trip

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government was hit by its first resignation on Tuesday over the controversy surrounding top aide Dominic Cummings’ cross-country trip during the coronavirus lockdown.

Undermining attempts by ministers to try and move on from the crisis which has dominated British politics for days, Douglas Ross, a minister for Scotland, quit in protest.

“I have constituents who didn’t get to say goodbye to loved ones; families who could not mourn together; people who didn’t visit sick relatives because they followed the guidance of the government,” he said in a Twitter statement announcing his departure.

“I cannot in good faith tell them they were all wrong and one senior advisor to the government was right.”

He added that Cummings’ interpretation of government rules was “not shared by the vast majority of people”.

The resignation will pile more pressure on Cummings, who held an extraordinary press conference Monday to justify driving his wife and young son on a 264-mile (425-kilometre) trip from London to Durham in the northeast of England during the height of the coronavirus crisis.

    Lack of credibility

Not long after Ross quit, Harriet Baldwin joined a growing list of Conservative MPs calling on Cummings to resign.

Tory party grandee Michael Heseltine told Sky News that “the lack of credibility” in Cummings’ version of events was “damaging the government”.

Some members of the clergy have also called on him to stand down as well as opposition party members, who will meet later today regarding the crisis.

Downing Street said it “regrets” the decision by Ross.

The resignation came after a cabinet heavyweight defended Cummings and said the controversial aide did not break the law.

Michael Gove, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, said Cummings had acted reasonably in driving from London to Durham and then taking a separate journey to a local beauty spot, Barnard Castle, to — as he claimed — test his eyesight.

“What’s clear is that he didn’t break the law, he didn’t break the rules, he sought to protect his family and he also sought to ensure that the risk of anyone in his family infecting anyone else was absolutely minimised,” Gove told the BBC on Tuesday.

Cummings drove to his parents’ home in Durham after feeling ill because he and his wife, who was also feeling unwell, needed possible back-up childcare for their young son.

Despite calls for him to resign, Cummings has so far resisted and instead defended his actions.

He told reporters he had acted “reasonably and legally”. The prime minister called Cummings’ actions “plausible”.

Also on Tuesday, the Office for National Statistics said the number of deaths in Britain “involving” the coronavirus had risen above 46,000, far higher than the 36,914 deaths officially confirmed in the government’s count.

  • Gucci slashes ‘stale’ seasonal fashion shows

Gucci has announced it will cut the number of fashion shows it holds every year in an effort to reduce waste.

The company says the concept of seasonal clothes has become obsolete and will now host just two “seasonless” catwalk shows annually.

The label said the traditional rota of spring/summer, autumn/winter, cruise and pre-fall shows was “stale”.

“Clothes should have a longer life than that which these words attribute to them,” Gucci’s creative director said.

The label has no plans for a show in September, the time when it would traditionally show a new collection at the Milan fashion week.

Alessandro Michele, the company’s creative director, now imagines showing collections only in the autumn and spring, instead of five times a year.

“Two appointments a year are more than enough to give time to form a creative thought, and to give more time to this system,” he said.

Gucci is the first major label to make an adamant declaration about supporting the move to a leaner, less wasteful fashion system. Its powerhouse status in the fashion and celebrity worlds could potentially make this decision a gamechanger.

Yves Saint Laurent, also owned by Kering, the Gucci parent company, has previously suggested it was considering leaving the fashion calendar behind too.

In a statement last month its designer Anthony Vaccarello said the brand would “take control” of the fashion schedule “conscious of the current circumstances and its waves of radical change”.

The coronavirus shutdown has hit fashion houses hard as the non-stop round of international fashion shows was stopped in its tracks.

The menswear and haute couture shows scheduled for June and July are off and a question mark hangs over September shows – if not any future catwalk events.

But the shutdown has also given fashion houses a window of reflection, not just on the value of endlessly churning out new styles but also on the rights and wrongs of consumption.

Michele’s video conference on Monday elaborated on earlier ideas to this effect that he had posted on Gucci’s Instagram account on Sunday.

“Above all, we understand we went way too far,” Michele wrote.

“Our reckless actions have burned the house we live in. We conceived of ourselves as separated from nature, we felt cunning and almighty.

“We usurped nature, we dominated and wounded it. We incited Prometheus, and buried Pan.

“So much haughtiness made us lose our sisterhood with the butterflies, the flowers, the trees and the roots. So much outrageous greed made us lose the harmony and the care, the connection and the belonging.”

Amongst the general public, thoughts have been turning the same way, with many people revisiting their old clothes, with the term “shopping in your wardrobe” touted online.

Michele said he hopes that ultimately designers will come together to adopt a new calendar and aim to fashion.

Previous champions of sustainability within the fashion industry include Dame Vivienne Westwood, who has been one of the most vocal campaigners on the issue.

In recent years that fashion world has increasingly had to bow to growing global concerns regarding over-consumption.

Traditional gender-based clothing has also had something of an overhaul, with celebrities, models and designers reflecting a more “gender fluid” landscape.

Michele himself has been at the forefront of more progressive way of thinking since he joined Gucci five years ago.

On the catwalk, his male models have worn pussy-bow silk blouses and dresses, he also dressed former One Direction star Harry Styles in earrings and Jared Leto in an evening gown at the Met Gala 2019.

Dries Van Noten has led a number of independent designers calling for a radical overhaul of the industry, with fewer fashion shows and less product.

Giorgio Armani announced his men’s and women’s shows will be combined in September, and his couture show will be held in January in Milan instead of Paris.

  • Coronavirus pandemic, blessing in disguise – George Afriyie

Owner of Division One League (DOL) club, Planners Athletic Club (formerly known as Okyeman Planners), Mr George Afriyie, has said the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and government must think about ways to make the sport more viable after COVID-19.

He said the COVID-19 pandemic which has halted football for sometime was a blessing in disguise as it offered the opportunity for stakeholders to rethink ways to improve football.

“Most DOL clubs play in an almost empty stadium and unable to generate funds from the gates. In the next two years, no club can raise funds through player sale due to the inactiveness,” he stated.

He explained that in the DOL, about GH¢4,000 to GH¢5,000 was spent on each match day with zero revenue for about 40 out of the 48 matches across the country.

“These are challenges that must be addressed before the resumption of the league. We need to make football more attractive and viable across board,” he added.

The Planners Athletic boss observed that it was difficult to get sponsors for the league prior to COVID-19 as the football economy was not attractive and strong enough.

He said it was important to use the big clubs like Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak as cash cows to get sponsorships for other clubs.

“We need to leverage on merchandising other aspects to get revenue for clubs after COVID-19. There is currently nothing to write home about with regard to revenue at the Division One level,” he stressed.

“COVID-19 has presented us an opportunity to do things better. It is time to amend certain ambiguities in the statutes to better our football and use the opportunity to divide congress into zones and find a better way to manage our football post COVID-19.

Congress, he continued, should immediately meet and decide whether to restart the league or truncate it completely for a fresh start.

Though it would be difficult to replicate what Germany has done with football, he said, Ghana could learn and work out something that would benefit the entire football fraternity.

  • Andre Ayew resumes training at Swansea City

Ghana skipper Andre Dede Ayew has resumed training at Swansea City after an enforced break by the coronavirus pandemic.

Ayew and his teammates returned to training for the first time in 10 weeks since the outbreak of the coronavirus forced the UK into lockdown.

All players and key football staff were tested for coronavirus on Friday by a private company – to ensure there is no impact on frontline public testing – and under EFL guidelines ahead of training.

The Swansea City vice-captain was put through his paces by Head coach Steve Cooper at the Fairwood training center as he starts preparations for the return of the English Championship.

The team trained under new protocols and in a controlled environment to ensure the spread of the coronavirus is curtailed.

Players showing a positive test, or displaying symptoms despite a negative test, will isolate for seven days with no attendance allowed at the training ground during that period. The players will then be retested seven days later.

There were no positive tests on Friday.

Once the training ground is free from players and staff, further cleaning of the site will be undertaken in accordance with the latest Government guidelines ahead of the next training session.

  • Manhunt for 2 coronavirus patients in Tamale

The Northern Regional Health Director, Dr. John B. Eleeza, has disclosed to DGN Online that the regional health directorate is in search of two Covid-19 patients who have gone into hidden in Tamale in the Northern Region.

According to the health director, the two are part of the 12 cases involving nine males, two females and one child whose samples were sent to the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR) on April 22, 2020 for testing before a testing center was established in Tamale.

He lamented that efforts to pick up the two have proved futile as they have abandoned their homes and cannot be found.

“We are still tracking those people and like I said we have traced 10 out of the 12,” he said.

Dr. Eleeza assured that the directorate is doing its best to locate the two in order to prevent them from spreading the virus in the region.

He appealed to the general public to ensure that they adhere to all the health directive to help prevent the spread of the virus.

  • Election 2020: Don’t touch any journalist – GJA president to political parties, police

President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Roland Affail Monney, has strongly admonished political parties to demonstrably restrain their followers from touching any journalist before, during, and after the 2020 general elections.

He also called on the security agencies to spare journalists any brutalities and rather work with them collaboratively.

Speaking to Ghanaweb at Aburi on the sidelines of an Editors’ Forum on peace and sensitive reporting, Mr. Affail Monney, emphasised that an attack against a journalist is an attack against democracy which in turn has serious implications on the nation.

According to the GJA President, Ghana’s feat as a beacon of democracy in Africa and a reference point for press freedom must jealously be protected.

“We have earned our reputation as a reference point for press freedom, but any time journalists are attacked, it dims the beacon of our democracy and injures our reputation in the eyes of the international community,” he stressed.

However, while urging the law enforcement agencies to continue to enforce the law to safeguard Ghana’s peace, Mr. Affail Monney cautioned journalists against unprofessionalism, urging them not to amplify the drumbeat of violence by any political party or display bias.

He again called on them to make conscious efforts to tilt their stories and programmes towards conflict-free elections.

“Journalists must sharpen their sense of safety not only against the insidious coronavirus but also against vicious cancer of violence. They should scrupulously think through the consequences and fully weigh the implications of whatever they broadcast or publish,” he advised earlier at the Forum.

The Editors’ Forum, a GJA Election 2020 project, was on the theme, “No political vigilantism and electoral violence in Ghana” and it was funded by STAR-Ghana Foundation.

It is 14-month project that seeks to sensitise media practitioners on contributing meaningfully on national discourse on disbanding political vigilantism and eliminating electoral violence in Ghana.

  • It will only take a collective effort for Ghana to win trophies Asamoah Gyan

Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan has stated emphatically that it will only take a collective effort for the Black Stars to win the Africa Cup of Nations that has eluded the country.

Black Stars have failed to win the African Cup of nations since lifting the Mundial in 1982.

Despite coming close twice in 2010 and 2015, Ghana lost in the finals to Egypt and Ivory Coast respectively.

In an interview with Adom TV, the all-time top scorer for Ghana lamented that winning a major trophy for the country is not down to individuals but rather a collective work.

“To win a trophy, it is not down to individuals. It is a collective work. Sometimes I joke with my friends that if football is a personal thing, I can say that I will go and win a tournament myself because I know the kind of mindset I have. What about others? You do not know the mindset of others”

“This is how it has become. Football is a collective job. I can make my mind on something whilst my teammate would not have made his mind. You can score two and concede three so there are so many things involved. To win a cup is not an easy task. If we are all in sync, definitely we can win the cup because we have the quality.” He concluded.

  • I support GHOne TV for showing pornography – Mikki Osei Berko

Ace broadcaster and actor, Mikki Osei Berko, has thrown his support behind television stations in Ghana that show pornographic content.

Mikki Osei Berko, also called Dada Boat, believes the television networks are justified to show x-rated adult materials because of the lax regulations on showing foreign contents in the country.

It could be recalled that GHOne TV on Thursday, April 9, 2020, aired a pornographic material on its late night show, Duvet, which also coincided with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s nation address on COVID-19 pandemic.

Although the General Manager of GHOne TV, Nana Aba Anamoah issued an offical statement apologizing on behalf of the station, many Ghanaians slammed the management for permitting an x-rated content on their TV network.

But, according to Mikki Osei Berko, he does not fault GHOne TV or any television network that decides to imitate what GHOne TV did because the State authorities have allowed foreign culture to override that of the nation.

”The national problem is that we don’t understand our culture. We don’t even know we have a culture for us to even teach our generations or ourselves. We don’t even know our heritage and that is one of the major problems we have as a country. So, we don’t know the direction we’re taking. We don’t even have a direction because if we have a direction, we would know our culture”, he exclaimed.

To him, there should be an overhauling in the media landscape for media organizations to project Ghana’s culture by showing 100 percent local content, but until that is done, he sarcastically gave GHOne TV thumbs-up for showing pornographic content.

”I support the TV station. Yes! Because everybody is doing what he or she likes. If everybody is doing what he or she wants and you too you know what to do to attract people, why don’t you do it? Because there’s no regulation. I know there is a regulation that permits the broadcast of appropriate content; but in this country, to a large extent, the laws are not applied,” he stressed.

”Where does pornographic content stems from? It’s a foreign culture. If we are to direct TV stations to show contents that are Ghanaian, they won’t show pornography. Then again, it will offer employment”, Dada Boat added.

  • Premier League: Players face ‘25% increased injury risk’ when season returns

Premier League players could be 25% more susceptible to injury when football resumes because of the intense schedule, research shows.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters is “as confident as we can be” of restarting in June.

Time will need to be found for the FA Cup before the 2020-21 season starts in “late August, early September”.

Based on Project Restart’s provisional return date of 20 June, Manchester City players could face 13 games in 49 days.

City have played one fewer match than the majority of Premier League clubs but these figures do not take into account the completion of the Champions League, which has the potential of adding another four games should they reach the final – if the tournament can be concluded.

Research conducted by artificial intelligence platform Zone7, which specialises in injury risk forecasting and works with 35 professional football teams worldwide, shows that playing eight matches in a 30-day period increases the incidence of injury by 25% when compared with playing four to five matches in the same timeframe.

Eight matches in 30 days may seem a regular occurrence but only 4% of players across a season are subjected to such a run of games.

It is not just the congestion of the fixture list that poses a concern, but the time provided for teams to transition from individual, socially distanced training to higher-intensity group training, something Watford manager Nigel Pearson and Newcastle boss Steve Bruce are concerned about.

The Bundesliga was only officially given the go-ahead to recommence on 7 May, just nine days before the first fixture kicked off. Eight players picked up injuries in the six games on 16 May – a rate well above normal.

Borussia Dortmund beat local rivals Schalke 4-0 as football returned in Germany
A standard pre-season schedule runs for a period of 30 days, or even longer.

But when examining data from 11 top-division professional teams from the past two seasons, Zone7 found that when the preparation period shortens, due to an international tournament or entry into European competition, 75% of teams had higher prevalence of injury in the first half of the season when compared to those that had more planning time.

Flaminia Ronca, an exercise physiologist at the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health, part of University College London, is working with Premier League players to assess what health risks they may face when returning after the suspension.

She said: “It’s possible that the players may have lost up to 15% of their fitness, which they now need to regain in a very short time.

“And I think this is really where the science of training becomes so crucial. Coaches will have to be very creative and combine the most effective methods of training with the safest injury prevention methods, all condensed into this very tight timeframe.”

Over five million hours of performance from various sports, including those 35 professional football teams, has been gathered by Zone7 and this data is used to assess the probability of a player sustaining an injury in the following seven days.

Millions of data points are taken from wearable technology that tracks workloads from training and matches, player injury history, fitness tests, and even sleep patterns to generate daily risk forecasts.

Historical data is used to detect data patterns that precede injuries and alert when those data patterns emerge and help prevent the injury before it occurs.

From here, teams are given risk forecasts and not only can they identify the type of injury a particular player could sustain if they are deemed “high risk”, modifications can be made to that player’s bespoke training schedule to avoid the injury occurring. Zone7 states it can provide accurate and timely alerts for 75% of injuries.

  • Experts warn against masks for young toddlers

Japan’s Paediatric Association has advised parents not to put masks on children under the age of two because they can make breathing difficult and increase the risk of choking.

In a notice on its website, the group also said because children had narrow air passages, their hearts would be put under additional strain by trying to breathe through a mask.

The US Centers for Disease Control also says children under the age of two should not wear cloth face coverings.

  • Unease in Greece as restaurants, cafes reopen

Restaurants and cafes across Greece opened ahead of schedule Monday as the country prepared to launch a shortened tourism season vital to its economy.

But with social distancing rules limiting businesses to around 50 percent capacity, and only outdoor tables allowed, many owners questioned the wisdom of reopening after a lockdown of over two months.

“We have to disinfect everything all the time… we’d have to hire someone to clean up and keep track of the customers… but are unable to do that,” cafe owner Vangelis Daskalopoulos told AFP in Athens.

“I don’t know how we’re going to manage,” he said, adding that he was torn between his fear of the virus and the need to keep his business running.

In cafes like his, a mandatory minimum distance of between 70 cm (28 inches) to 1.7 meters (5.5 feet) between seats is required, and a maximum of six seated customers per table is allowed.

Despite the misgivings of some like Daskalopoulos, patrons were happy for the chance socialise in cafes again.

“I’m thrilled to break the isolation of recent months and reconnect with friends,” said pensioner Giorgos Karavatsanis.

“The cafe in Greece has a social dimension, it’s where the heart of the district beats,” he said.

But some three in 10 cafes or restaurants were predicted to stay closed out of fear of slow business, Nikos Nifoudis of the Thessaloniki Catering Initiative told Athens News Agency over the weekend

“The sector is very anxious to see how returning to business will play out… no one can predict how confident customers are to return to cafes and restaurants,” he said.

    Flights to resume

Eateries were originally slated to open June 1, but the slow spread of the pandemic in Greece allowed the date to be moved forward.

The country of 11 million has so far recorded fewer than 180 coronavirus deaths.

Since May 4, Greece has progressively opened tourism-related businesses following a lockdown imposed in March to stave off an economic contraction that could reach 13 percent of output this year.

Paid beaches opened on May 16, while ferry travel to the islands was permitted on Monday. Year-round hotels are to resume operations on June 1, followed by seasonal hotels on June 15.

Flights into Athens will restart on June 15, and to the rest of Greece’s regional and island airports on July 1.

But Daskalopoulos is worried about the risks incoming travellers may pose.

“People will come from countries that have a greater number of infections (than Greece’s) and will not even be checked,” he said.

The EU has said holidaymakers could be asked to wear face masks on planes, respect social distancing on the beach and even book slots to use hotel pools.

Greece had initially wanted incoming tourists to submit to tests at least 72 hours before travel, but Brussels frowned at the suggestion.

Athens now says it will not require travellers to undergo virus testing or quarantine, but sample tests will be carried out for epidemiological purposes.

Restaurants were shuttered on March 14, two days after Greece recorded its first COVID-19 death, with only takeout food and delivery allowed.

  • Beijing vows to shield firms from US sanctions over Xinjiang

Beijing on Monday vowed to shield a Chinese government institute and eight companies sanctioned by the US over alleged human rights violations in the restive Xinjiang region, where China is accused of mass repression of mostly Muslim minorities.

The US Department of Commerce announced the sanctions on Friday, saying they were triggered by human rights abuses against Uighurs and other minority groups in Xinjiang in China’s far northwest.

Beijing urged Washington to reverse the decision, saying the Commerce Department had “stretched the concept of national security” to “meddle in China’s affairs and harm China’s interests”.

“China will take all necessary measures to protect the legal rights and interests of Chinese companies,” foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said at a regular press briefing.

The Commerce Department said the nine parties were “complicit in human rights violations and abuses committed in China’s campaign of repression, mass arbitrary detention, forced labour and high-technology surveillance against Uighurs, ethnic Kazakhs” and other Muslim minority groups in Xinjiang.

All nine are now subject to restrictions on exports from the US, the department added.

Washington has been increasingly active in its criticism of China’s treatment of ethnic minorities in Xinjiang, and in October blacklisted 28 entities involved in alleged rights violation there.

The US House of Representatives and Senate are yet to reconcile similar acts approved last year that would seek sanctions on officials over abuses, and restrict exports of surveillance gear and other equipment seen as assisting in repression in Xinjiang.

An estimated one million mostly Muslim ethnic minorities are being held in internment camps in Xinjiang.

Uighur activists say China is conducting a massive brainwashing campaign aimed at eradicating their distinct culture and Islamic identity.

China describes the camps as vocational training sites intended to offer an alternative to Islamic extremism.

Tensions are also growing between the world’s two largest economies after President Donald Trump accused China of misleading the world on the origins of the coronavirus, which first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan.

Beijing has furiously denied the allegation, and its foreign minister Wang Yi said Sunday that Washington was pushing both sides to “the brink of a new Cold War”.

  • Ashesi University founder, others urge government to cancel disrupted school term

Educationists have been unanimous in their call for government not to rush in reopening schools in the wake of increasing cases of Covid-19 increasing.

Key among them is the president and founder of Ashesi University, Dr Patrick Awuah who is urging government not to allow students to go back to school.

According to him, reopening schools at the time the country is battling a global pandemic poses a greater risk to students and teachers.

“I will not attempt to open now. I will wish to wait till September to give us the understanding on how to deal with the virus and to also take preparatory steps in getting schools ready to receive students,” he stated.

Dr Awuah proposed that government cancels the disrupted term to allow various stakeholders adequately prepare and ensure safety measures are instituted in schools across the country.

“Opening schools now is very difficult and probably should not be attempted. We should just say we have lost the third term of the academic year,” he suggested.

Dr Patrick Awuah made these comments on an education policy forum on Prime Morning on the Joy Prime channel.

The discussion was focused on how to create a safe environment for education in the midst of a pandemic.

He also opined a plan be instituted in generating WASSCE grades for students in their final year using their continuous assessment.

Also contributing to the discussion, Professor Emeritus of Ashesi University, Stephen Adei called for a modified approach to reopening of schools.

He wants only final year students back to school as the government monitors what it will take to allow full resumption of the educational institutions.

Former Education Minister, Prof. Jane Nana Opoku-Agyemang feels the government should prioritise public schools when planning to reopen schools as well as bridge the inequality gap that exists between schools in the rural and urban centres.

She also indicated that the pandemic presents the government an opportunity to plan for both medium and long terms in dealing with future pandemics.

Meanwhile, teachers unions will on Tuesday May 26, meet President Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House as the government continues to hold stakeholder-engagement on a possible reopening of schools.

  • Austrian president ‘sorry’ for breaking lockdown rules

Austria’s President Alexander Van der Bellen has apologised after staying at a restaurant beyond the Coronavirus-related closing time of 23:00.

He remained at the restaurant in the capital, Vienna, until after midnight.

Mr Van der Bellen, 76, said he had lost track of the time while speaking with friends at the Italian restaurant in the centre of the city.

Austria was one of the first countries in Europe to follow Italy in imposing a strict lockdown.

It was also one of the first to begin easing its restrictions. Gatherings of up to 10 people have been allowed since the start of May, and public parks, small shops, DIY stores and garden centres have been open since last month.

“I’m sincerely sorry. It was a mistake,” Mr Van der Bellen said.

“I went out for the first time since the lockdown with two friends and my wife,” he wrote on Twitter. “We then lost track of the time while chatting.”

The president was spotted by police on the outside dining area of the restaurant shortly after midnight on Sunday, local media report.

But the government’s latest rules say restaurants and cafes, which were allowed to reopen last week, must close no later than 23:00.

The restaurant could be fined for a breach, but Mr Van der Bellen said he would “take responsibility” if the owner suffers any losses as result of the incident.

“We closed after a last round of drinks on time at 23:00, as required by law,” the owner told the Krone newspaper.

He said he had thought that customers were allowed to stay on the terrace beyond that time if they wished.
