  • GhanaWeb Polls: 55% of Ghanaians call for another lockdown to curb spread of coronavirus

Results from a poll conducted by GhanaWeb on whether the government should impose another lockdown in the country indicate that 55.14% representing 381 votes were in favour of another lockdown to ease the spread of COVID-19.

Meanwhile, 40.96% representing 283 voted against the idea of any further restrictions.

Here is a link to the polls on GhanaWeb

In the heat of this discussion, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Sunday, May 24, 2020, indicated that plans are underway to further ease the coronavirus restrictions adding that, “we have to find a way back, but in safety, for we cannot be under these restrictions forever.”

A study conducted by GhanaWeb on the impact of coronavirus on businesses proved that the beauty industry, event organizers, private school owners, fashion designers, among other service providers have been greatly hit by the Coronavirus crisis. Thus the need to ease the restrictions in other to save these businesses.

Right from the time government lifted the 3-week partial lockdown in some parts of the country, the move has been greeted with diverse reactions.

To a larger section of Ghanaians, the increasing number of coronavirus cases require stricter measures to halt the spread of the virus. Some citizens, on the other hand, believe the virus does not exist.

Below are some comments from the polls:

  • Lorry drivers ‘found after escaping from test centres’

The authorities in Uganda have arrested seven lorry drivers out of 25 others who escaped from a coronavirus testing centres on the country’s border with Kenya.

The drivers had been tested at Elegu and Malaba border posts where they returned positive tests.

The seven were found in Ndeeba area, on the southwestern edge of the capital, Kampala, which is 191km (118 miles) from the border.

The authorities are now tracing their contacts, National Covid-19 Response Incident Commander Ateka Kagirita told the Daily Monitor newspaper.

“The operation is ongoing to hunt down all the drivers who escaped into the community after testing positive. We are working day and night to get who they got into contact with, establish where they slept to ensure there is no positive case in the community,” he is quoted as saying.

In Kenya, two lorry drivers who escaped from a testing centre before their results came out were intercepted in the lakeside city of Kisumu, a two-hour drive from the border, and put under isolation, the Daily Nation Newspaper reports.

The drivers, one from Uganda and the other from South Sudan, entered the country through the Busia border. They both tested positive.

  • Family of exiled top Saudi officer Saad al-Jabri ‘targeted’

A senior Saudi security official who for years was the key go-between for Britain’s MI6 and other Western spy agencies in Saudi Arabia is now being persecuted along with his family, according to former Western intelligence officials.

Dr Saad al-Jabri, who helped foil an al-Qaeda bomb plot against the West, fled into exile three years ago, ahead of a purge by the all-powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Now his children have been seized as “hostages”, according to his eldest son, Khalid.

“Omar and Sarah were kidnapped at dawn on 16 March and taken out of their beds by about 50 state security officers who arrived in 20 cars,” says their brother, Khalid al-Jabri.

The family house in Riyadh was then searched, the CCTV memory cards removed and the pair, aged 21 and 20 respectively, held incommunicado at a detention centre.

There have been no charges given and no reason offered to the family for their arrest, Khalid tells me on a phone call from Canada where he and his father live in self-imposed exile. “We don’t even know if they are alive or dead.”

He believes they are being held as bargaining chips in an attempt to force his father to return to Saudi Arabia where he fears he will face immediate arrest and imprisonment.

“They can make up any lies they want about him but he is innocent.”

The Saudi authorities have not responded to the BBC’s requests for comment on the allegations made by the family of Dr Saad al-Jabri and those who worked with him.

    Who is Saad al-Jabri?

For years he was the right-hand man, the gatekeeper, to Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, who was widely credited with defeating the al-Qaeda insurgency in the 2000s. He was also the linchpin in all Saudi Arabia’s relations with the “Five Eyes” (US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand) intelligence agencies.

In 2010 this crucial link “helped save hundreds of lives”, according to a former Western intelligence officer who worked with him.

Al-Qaeda in Yemen had smuggled a powerful bomb on-board a cargo plane bound for Chicago, hidden inside a printer ink toner cartridge. But Saudi intelligence had a human informant inside al-Qaida who provided the tip-off to MI6, even relaying the serial number of the device it was hidden in.

British counter-terrorism police then located and defused the bomb inside the plane at East Midlands Airport. “If that had gone off as planned over Chicago hundreds would have been killed,” said the former intelligence officer.

“Dr al-Jabri transformed Saudi counter-terrorism efforts,” says another former western intelligence official.

“He changed it from being a crude, violent, confession-based system into one that used modern forensics and computer-based data mining.

“He was the smartest guy we dealt with amongst so many others who were dysfunctional,” he says.

A quiet-spoken man with a doctorate in artificial intelligence from Edinburgh University, Dr al-Jabri rose to the rank of cabinet minister and held a major-general’s rank in the interior ministry.

But in 2015 everything changed. King Abdullah died and his half-brother Salman ascended to the throne, appointing his young and untested son Mohammed Bin Salman (known as MBS) as defence minister.

MBS then ordered his country’s forces to intervene in Yemen’s civil war, a move opposed by Dr al-Jabri who pointed out that there was no exit strategy. More than five years later Saudi Arabia is still looking for a way out of the costly stalemate in Yemen.

In 2017 MBS carried out a bloodless palace coup with his father’s blessing. He effectively usurped the next in line to the throne, Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, becoming crown prince himself.

Today that deposed prince is under arrest, his assets seized and those who worked for him have been removed from their posts. Dr al-Jabri fled into exile in Canada. But former Western intelligence officials believe MBS still sees him as a threat to his legitimacy.

“He can’t afford to have that guy as a free radical and a galvanising force against him,” says one of them.

His family say they have tried in vain to meet the Saudi authorities “on neutral ground” and have now decided to go public.

“There are signs that Dr Saad is being targeted with a wide range of threats and the (Canadian) authorities are taking it seriously,” says his son Khalid.

“We were pushed into this,” he adds. “We are patriots, we love our country, we don’t want to embarrass Saudi Arabia but kidnapping Omar and Sarah like this, it’s daylight thuggery by a state.”

  • Kenya’s deputy leader disowns ‘contaminated’ donation

Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto has disowned food donation said to be contaminated that was distributed in a constituency outside the capital, Nairobi, in bags branded with the name of his foundation.

Scores of people have visited hospitals after consuming the food, with some patients in critical condition – according to Kiambu County Governor James Nyoro.

Mr Ruto on Monday denied involvement in the distribution of the food, blaming it on “political thuggery”.

“Reports from locals indicate that the strange food donations in question were hurriedly thrown from moving vehicles to unsuspecting public with fake branding, that is not from the Foundation,” a statement from his spokesperson said.

Some residents are reported to have returned the foodstuffs to local administrators, according to media reports. Each bag carried a packet of maize flour, cooking oil, tea leaves among other essentials.

Kenyan politicians have been distributing foodstuffs in low-income areas where people’s earnings have been hard-hit by coronavirus containment measures.

The government has restricted movement in and out of Nairobi and the second biggest city of Mombasa, as well as two other counties in the coastal region. It has also imposed a night to dawn curfew.

  • How bad are China’s economic woes?

While economists say China’s economic data can’t always be trusted, they now have a new dilemma – there is no data.

On Friday, China said it wouldn’t be setting a target for economic growth for this year.

That’s unprecedented – the Chinese government hasn’t done this since it began publishing such goals in 1990.

Abandoning the growth target is an acknowledgement of just how difficult a recovery in China will be in a post pandemic era.

And while recent figures have shown that China is on the way out of its slowdown: it’s an uneven recovery.

    First, the good news.

For the first time since the pandemic hit China – factories are making goods again.

Industrial output in April grew by a better-than-expected 3.9% – a marked difference from the collapse of 13.5% in the first two months of this year as massive lockdowns were imposed.

There’s also a swathe of other data that has been surprisingly strong – pointing to what economists like to call a V-shaped recovery – a sharp, drastic initial fall – followed by a quick rebound in economic activity.

Coal consumption by six major power generators surged back to historical norms after May’s “Golden week” holidays, according to investment bank JP Morgan. It currently stands 1.5% above the historical average, suggesting that power demand has returned to normal.

And the pollution-free Chinese skies that we saw in the aftermath of the lockdowns there – well, they’ve disappeared as economic activity has picked up.

China’s air pollution levels recently surpassed concentrations over the same period last year for the first time since the coronavirus crisis began, driven by industrial emissions.

All of this shows that China is slowly getting back to business.

But it’s not business as usual, and this shows just how difficult it will be for the rest of us to get our economies going again.

Recent retail sales figures show just how difficult it is going to be to get people into shops and buying things.

Sales were down 7.5% in April – better than March – but nowhere near where they need to be for the economy to be running on full cylinders. Many Chinese people are still worried about a second wave of infection, and they’re not spending as much as they used to.

It’s no wonder China has abandoned it’s growth target this year – the government knows it will be hard to forecast just how deep this crisis has become.

    Rising unemployment

Compounding all of that – are the all-important unemployment figures – which officially came in slightly higher in April than in March, at 6%, edging closer to historical highs.

But most economists say the real number is much worse.

The “true level of unemployment is likely double this”, given that around a fifth of migrant workers haven’t returned to the cities, says the think tank Capital Economics.

Even China’s hard-line Communist mouthpiece the Global Times – typically the Chinese economy’s biggest cheerleader – has pointed out how dire the employment picture is.

It is saying that this year “it will be nearly impossible for Chinese employees in the private sector to earn as much salary as they did in 2019,” as small businesses have had to fire employees or cut staff.

It’s going to get worse before it gets better.

Some 85% of private enterprises will struggle to survive over the next three months, writes Prof Justin Yifu Lin of Peking University, citing a Tsinghua University survey in March.

“Bankruptcy of enterprises will lead to an increase in unemployment,” he adds.

Granted, many Chinese people are employed by state-owned enterprises, and China’s economic system is able to absorb the ranks of the unemployed better than the US.

Chinese people have more savings, better family support, and many migrant workers also have land back home that they can rely on for basic needs and even sustenance in the very worst of circumstances.

“You will see a great transition of migrant workers going back to their villages where they have their own piece of land,” Wang Huiyao of the Centre for China and Globalisation tells me.

“Yes, there will be some hardships, but people outside of China probably don’t understand how we view hardships and difficulties – which Chinese people just experienced not too long ago when China was very poor. ”

    This time it’s different

The Communist Party has always stated a growth target to achieve as a way of signalling how well China is doing.

But clearly this time it’s different: no target – so there’s no getting away from the fact that the current economic environment is the most challenging China has faced in recent years.

Indeed, China has been through difficult economic periods before – the 1990s, for instance, saw huge numbers of people laid off.

The economy at the time was dominated by state-owned enterprises – they provided jobs for the bulk of the working population.

As the economy slowed down, they shed millions of workers – and unemployment rose rapidly, by one percentage point every year according to the National Bureau of Economic Research.

State-owned enterprises went from employing 60% of the working population in 1995 to 30% in 2002.

But China recovered, and the private sector stepped in to hire young people.

This time, it’s different and the private sector is also under pressure, says economist George Magnus, associate at the China Centre, Oxford University. “No one was talking about trade wars at that time. The great offshoring of manufacturing to China was underway.

“Now, the rest of the world is an economic funk – so there’s no consumer demand, and nothing in terms of foreign trade. All of the headwinds that China was facing before the pandemic have been compounded by the coronavirus.”

    ‘Chinese dream’ under pressure

For the last 40 years, China’s Communist Party has been able to promise a simple contract to its citizens: we’ll keep your quality of life improving and you fall in line so that we can keep China on the right path.

It is the social contract that China’s leader Xi Jinping crystallised as the “Chinese dream” when he announced it in 2012.

2020 was meant to be a pivotal part of that grand plan – the year China would eliminate absolute poverty, raising the quality and standard of life for millions of people.

But the coronavirus could be putting that social contract at risk.

Arguably more than any other economic crisis in the Chinese Communist Party’s history, this health crisis has become a major threat for social stability in the country.

Millions of young people may not be guaranteed the same degree of success that their parents’ generation has seen. Keeping that contract of wealth, employment and stability is key to the Chinese Communist Party’s legitimacy.

Which is why economic recovery for China is so critical – and not having a growth target gives the government much needed flexibility to work out a plan.

  • First Spanish beaches to reopen as lockdown eases

Coronavirus lockdown measures will finally be eased for people in Madrid and Barcelona from Monday, while elsewhere in Spain the first beaches are due to reopen.

Residents in the two cities can now meet in groups of up to 10 people in their homes or on the terraces of bars and restaurants.

The gates of the capital’s parks will also be reopened, and major museums will be able to receive a limited number of visitors.

The Madrid and Barcelona regions, the most populated in the country, and a large part of Castile-Leon in the northwest are moving into the first phase of Spain’s four-phase deconfinement programme, following what has been one of the strictest lockdowns in the world.

These regions have been on a slower deconfinement track as they bore the brunt of the pandemic in Spain, which has killed more than 28,700 people to date, one of the world’s highest tolls.

Everyone must continue to wear a mask, which is already compulsory in buildings and on public streets when it is not possible to keep a distance of two metres (six feet).

The rest of the country meanwhile — 22 million out of Spain’s 47 million inhabitants — is moving on to the second phase, which is expected to last until the end of June.

Restaurants may then reopen to a limited number of customers, and outings for walks or sports will no longer be limited to certain hours of the day.

As the summer heat arrives, beaches on the Atlantic Ocean coast and in much of Andalusia, as well as on the Balearic and Canary Islands, are open for swimming, subject to safety measures.

The health ministry recommends limiting the number of visitors to the beaches, creating boundaries and spacing umbrellas four metres apart.

Only locals will benefit for the time being. Travel between regions is still forbidden and foreigners arriving in Spain must quarantine for 14 days.

But the government plans to reopen the borders to foreign tourists in July.

The lockdown, in force since mid-March, has been among the most severe in the world.

In the first few weeks, Spaniards could hardly set foot outside and their children were kept indoors.

Many residents have become impatient over the government’s slow and cautious process of lifting the restrictions.

Thousands of people protested on Saturday by car in major Spanish cities at the call of the far-right Vox party.

Drivers honked their horns, waved Spanish flags and banged on pots and pans to denounce the management of the coronavirus crisis by the left-wing government of Pedro Sanchez.

  • FDA accepts challenge to maintain standards

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) says it has accepted the challenge to maintain standards and even improve upon its status as World Health Organisation (WHO) listed Level Three regulatory body.

The listing of the Ghana FDA makes Ghana one of the 51 elite countries globally to have attained the WHO Level Three listing.

    Hardworking
Responding to the challenge in an interview, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the FDA Mrs Mimi Delese A.A. Darko gave the assurance that the staff, “will keep working hard to continually improve our systems, products and services, not just as a country but within the Africa medicines harmonisation initiative to improve public health through support access to good quality safe and efficacious medicines.”

The FDA was last month rated a WHO Level Three listed institution after meeting 267 WHO benchmarks backed by documentation as having a stable, well-functioning and integrated regulatory system.

Ghana thus becomes the second African country after Tanzania to achieve such a feat, making the Ghana FDA comparable to any regulatory body in the world.

The Board Chairman of the FDA Dr Sammy Ohene challenged the staff to work towards attaining the WHO maturity Level Four.

Attaining WHO Maturity Level Four means that the regulatory system is operating at advanced level of performance and continuous improvement.

    Highest quality standards
But Mrs Darko stated that the Ghana FDA had over the years strived to attain highest quality standards by always making positive changes to improve its systems and services.

“So, we benchmark against the best global practices to ensure that as an agency we are comparable to the most effective and best regulators in the world,” she said, adding that the target of the FDA was to reach the ultimate Level Four to rub shoulders with the renowned regulatory bodies such as the American FDA.

Giving praise and thanks to God for the achievement, Mrs Darko said the authority was humbled by the recognition given it, “by no less a body than the WHO”, saying that for Ghana to have been named as WHO Level Three listed country and among the 51 countries globally, meant that the FDA was doing something right to merit that and it was an honour for its staff.

“We are proud to achieve this status and we thank government for the support and enabling environment. We look forward to playing our role towards the attainment of a Ghana Beyond Aid that is built in strong industries supervised by strong and world class regulatory authorities.

    Gratitude
“FDA management and staff you are priceless – especially the hard-working staff from licensing, safety monitoring, clinical trials, marketing authorisation, quality control Laboratory, market surveillance, regulatory system as a whole – Thank you for all your hard work.

“You continue to dedicate yourself and your time to ensure that we have access to safe medical products and vaccines even under usually challenging circumstances and little remuneration,” she said.

    Processes
Commenting on the achievement in a separate interview, the Ag Deputy Chief Executive (Drug Registration and Inspectorate Division) Mr Seth Seaneke took the Daily Graphic through the processes leading to the attainment of the level three status.

He said in March 2019, Ghana’s FDA applied to be considered for listing as a WHO Level Three listed regulatory body, “and a year down the lane, here we are, joining the few elites in the world.”

He said the assessors assessed the functional areas of the authority; namely the Medicine Registration, Marketing Surveillance, Good Manufacturing Practice Inspection, Laboratory Testing, Pharmacovigilance, Clinical Trials and the Regulatory System itself.

Mr Seaneke was proud to add that by the time the assessors completed their assessment, it was realised that Safety Monitoring, one of the seven functional areas was already at Level 4 while two other areas, the laboratory and clinical trials were expected to complete few documentation requirements to attain the Level Four within the year.

He explained that the WHO, played a pivotal role in supporting countries in strengthening their regulatory systems and promoting equitable access to quality, safe, efficacious, and affordable medical products and health products.

  • Japan set to lift coronavirus emergency as cases slow

Japan was poised to lift its nationwide state of emergency over the coronavirus on Monday, gradually reopening the world’s third-biggest economy after new cases slowed to a crawl.

Compared to hard-hit areas in Europe, the United States, Russia and Brazil, Japan has been spared the worst of the pandemic, with 16,581 cases in total and 830 deaths.

Yet with infections threatening to run out of control, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe declared an initial state of emergency for Tokyo and six other regions on April 7 – later expanding it to cover the entire country.

Businesses and schools were urged to shut and people were requested to remain home but Japan’s “lockdown” was far softer than in other parts of the world and there was no punishment for anyone flouting the rules.

Citizens largely heeded the orders, with most of Tokyo’s famously packed streets falling quiet, and the number of new infections has fallen from a peak of around 700 per day to just a few dozen nationally.

There does not appear to be one single reason why the pandemic has hit Japan less hard than other comparable countries, and trying to pinpoint possible causes has become a favourite sport on social media.

High levels of hygiene and general health, removing shoes indoors, widespread masks, bowing as a greeting rather than shaking hands or kissing: all have been advanced as possible reasons but analysts agree there has been no silver bullet.

    Recession and deflation

Japan has come under fire for a relatively low level of testing with around 270,000 carried out, the lowest per capita rate in the group of seven advanced economies, according to Worldometer.

But Japanese authorities insist that mass testing was never their strategy, as cases remained low enough to rely on aggressive contact tracing to contain clusters.

Nevertheless, testing has been ramped up in recent weeks as authorities warn of a possible next wave of the virus that could overwhelm their previous strategy.

Medical facilities are also being boosted after horror stories of coronavirus victims being unable to find a suitable hospital bed – mainly for administrative reasons as only certain establishments are designated to deal with the virus.

Although the human toll has been less severe than in other parts of the world, the economy – already struggling from the effects of natural disasters and a consumption tax hike – has suffered.

The world’s third-largest economy has plunged into its first recession since 2015, data published last week showed, shrinking by 0.9 percent in the first quarter.

With economic activity slowing to a crawl, the spectre of deflation is looming again, with consumer prices in March logging their first drop in more than three years.

In a bid to stem the damage, Abe has ordered a mass handout of 100,000 yen ($930) per person, part of a stimulus package worth around $1 trillion.

Coronavirus has also taken its toll politically, with polls showing support for Abe falling rapidly – a recent survey for the Asahi Shimbun suggested backing had dropped to 29 percent – the lowest since he took office in 2012.

He performed a rare u-turn on the cash handouts – initially announcing an entirely different policy – and is seen to have bungled another signature move involving the distribution of two masks per household, which attracted widespread mockery.

  • Joy and sorrow for new Afghan parents after hospital attack

Zia Gul gave birth to her daughter hours after escaping from gunmen who rampaged through a Kabul maternity ward, and now struggles to reconcile the joys of early motherhood with the trauma of the attack.

As she delights in the first days with her new daughter Roya, the sleepless nights familiar to any new parent are haunted by the gruesome May 12 attack that killed at least 24 people.

“I have nightmares every night,” the 28-year-old said, sitting on a carpet in her Kabul home, cradling her sleeping daughter in her lap.

Newborns, mothers and nurses, were killed when gunmen posing as members of the security forces rampaged through the facility run by Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in an attack that shocked a country long accustomed to brutality after decades of war.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani later pinned the blame on the Taliban who denied any involvement while the United States accused the Islamic State.

No group has claimed responsibility for the massacre.

“Whenever I hear a loud sound or firecrackers, I think the attackers have come to kill me,” said Zia Gul from her home in an impoverished Kabul neighbourhood.

“The attack came suddenly, the attackers started shooting the babies and women giving birth.”

As the militants went on their killing spree – described by MSF as “a systematic shooting” – doctors at the hospital helped Zia Gul and others hide.

She later managed to escape and was evacuated by security services to another facility.

An hour later, her daughter Roya was born, a blessing after suffering an earlier miscarriage.

But the joy was dulled – her mother-in-law, who had come with her to the hospital, was killed in the attack.

    ‘Could not recognise her face’

Akram, 40, who only gave his first name, vividly recalls the aftermath of the horrific attack that killed his wife shortly after she had given birth to their daughter, Maryam.

Approaching the hospital bed where her body lay, he did not know the woman lying there was his wife.

“I recognised her from her feet,” he said.

“I could not recognise her by her face when I saw her.”

He had no idea his new daughter was alive until he saw a Facebook post saying she had been evacuated to another hospital, with an accompanying picture and phone number.

For many of the new parents – many from poor neighbourhoods in Kabul – the aftermath of the massacre has made it even harder to make ends meet.

Zia Gul’s husband is deaf, making it difficult for him to find work in normal times, she said, adding that a lockdown imposed on the capital to combat the coronavirus has made earning money even harder.

Nearly a dozen families who bore the brunt of the attack are surviving on aid given by the Relief and Emergency Fund for Afghanistan (REFA), a campaign group.

The group is helping by donating food, as well as diapers and powdered milk for the newborns, said its head Behzad Ghazi.

How and who will help the survivors overcome the trauma in the long run is another question, said Lyla Schwartz, a psychologist counselling some of the victims and founder of Peace of Mind Afghanistan, an NGO.

Their families are often unable to afford the mental health providers and the “psychological help they need to heal,” she said.

Akram, who runs a shop, has two other sons aged six and seven and an elderly mother to take care of, and is worried about how he will raise his youngest child.

“I think (my mother) does not have the ability to take care of the child,” he said.

  • UK lockdown easing overshadowed by aide row

Plans in the UK to ease the lockdown are being overshadowed by claims that an aide to Prime Minister Boris Johnson broke the lockdown rules.

In March, Dominic Cummings drove 260 miles from London so his parents could help with childcare – Cummings’ wife and later Cummings himself both had to self-isolate with virus symptoms.

He also later drove around 30 miles from his temporary home in County Durham, apparently after his 14-day self-isolation.

Boris Johnson has defended his top aide, insisting he acted “responsibly, legally and with integrity”.

The prime minister is this week expected to set out details of plans to lift restrictions. At a news conference on Sunday, he already confirmed the phased reopening of England’s primary schools will begin on 1 June.

  • Australia curve nearly flat for five weeks

Australia – one of the world leaders in containing the virus – says its flat virus curve has been successfully sustained.

The growth rate of new cases has now been under 0.5% for five consecutive weeks.

“That’s an extraordinary national achievement and I want to say to Australians, thank you,” Health Minister Greg Hunt said.

Only six new cases were reported today – adding to the total of around 7,000. Some 101 people have died.

The nation has re-opened restaurants and schools and aims to have most lockdown measures removed by July.

  • Pentecostal & Charismatic Council advocates for gradual easing of COVID-19 restrictions

The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council has indicated that it is not expecting a spontaneous easing of the  COVID-19 restrictions in the country.

The Council has rather advised that such a move should be done in a gradual process.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has hinted that consultations are ongoing with relevant stakeholders on the form and timing for the easing of COVID-19 restrictions.

The President says the proposed easing is meant to restore social and economic lives.

Speaking to Citi News the General Secretary of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, Rev. Emmanuel Barrigah said their call for a gradual easing of the restrictions will give them ample time to prepare their congregants on how to embrace the new normal.

“When we think about the easing of restrictions, we are not thinking of a sudden lifting of the ban on social gatherings including churches for instance, an announcement coming in a day telling us to reopen the following day for activities. We think we should put in place certain protocols and then educate our members so that when we start with the new normal life of the church, we will know how to behave when we come to church at all times.”

Rev. Barrigah also announced that they have presented to government some measures that will make the church safe for congregants.

He said during communion services, churches “could get the kind of communion that has the bread and the wine together in one small pack so that each member will pick and administer to him or herself after the priest has said prayers over them.”

“In the area of offertory, we want to discourage the use of offertory bowl that is passed around. We are advising the use of placing of that offertory bowl in front of the congregation so that in rows with social distancing in mind church members could move around and drop the offertory in the bowl.”

A ban was also placed on all public, social and religious gatherings by President Akufo-Addo on March 15, 2020, as part of measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease.

When he extended the ban, the President said there was a unanimous decision with the leaders of the major interest groups that it was early to lift it.

Heads of Christian Ecumenical Bodies in Ghana recently, however, expressed their preparedness to resume activities, as they put together a proposal for the government to clearly spell out modalities under which they can safely perform their programmes without endangering the lives of congregants.

Lifting restrictions on schools, churches could trigger a spike in COVID-19 cases Yieleh Chireh

Meanwhile, former Minister of Health, Joseph Yieleh Chireh, has urged the government to be cautious in easing restrictions on schools, places of religious worship among others.

His comments come at a time when there is a vigorous debate in the public space about the appropriate time for schools to reopen, given the circumstances of COVID-19.

Speaking on the Floor of Parliament, the Wa West MP called on the Government to resist the temptation of lifting the ban at the risk of a new wave of cases.

“My position on this matter is very clear; We have to hasten slowly because in France when they opened the schools, they had to close them again. No one knows how this disease can be effectively managed.”

“The scientists are still trying to find out the true nature of the disease and how it can be confronted and therefore if we rush and release all of us into a market place situation where everyone is doing what they want to do, we are likely to have an increase in respect to this disease,” the legislator said.

  • What sin have we committed to be omitted from stimulus package — Takyi Arhin asks government

Outspoken football administrator Takyi Arhin could not hide displeasure with the government over the exclusion of football clubs from its Coronavirus relief package.

The government on Wednesday announced a financial package to cushion businesses and enterprises affected by the lockdown.

Several businesses and institutions have been closed down indefinitely with workers told to stay at home as the country intensifies efforts to stop the spread of the deadly novel virus.

The football fraternity was not spared. Clubs have suspended camps until further notice, but are still expected to pay their players, coaches and other workers.

But the Ghana FA plea to government to be considered for the stimulus funds to be shared for organisations that have been hit by the crisis was unsuccessful as the National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI) in charge of distributing the package announced that football clubs were not factored.

“What sin has football people committed that we are not part of the package,” Arhin quizzed on Happy FM.

“Football is a serious business and we employ about 4000 people. We pay taxes and also we are citizens.”

He concluded, “We have sent a proposal to government and still waiting for them.”

Ghana have so far recorded 193 cases. Five persons have died with 31 others recovering as the government puts Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi under a 14-day partial lockdown.

The players and staff will be tested twice a week.

Meanwhile, players showing a positive test, or displaying symptoms despite a negative test, will be isolated for seven days with no attendance allowed at the training ground during that period. The players will then be re-tested seven days later.

  • Self-styled player managers killing Ghana football- Former Hearts Board Chairman reveals

Former Hearts of Oak Board Chairman, Emmanuel Martey Commodore Mensah has said that self-styled player managers and agents are responsible for the drop in the standard of play in the Ghana Premier League.

Commodore Mensah believes the case of mass player exodus is a major problem bedeviling the local game as the terrain gets easily robbed off emerging talents.

He has lamented that the rate at which players who are endearing themselves to local football fans are hurriedly sold to clubs abroad thereby killing interest in the local game.

“If you visit the stadium to watch local matches, which player is the star attraction…If the interest will come back, we need to nurture the players and let them stay together for 2-3 years before they can leave for foreign deals” Commodore Mensah told Asempa FM.

Commodore Mensah blamed the situation partly on soi-disant(self-styled) player managers who only sell players for the money without properly weighing the pros and cons of such moves.

“Again the so-called managers are not helping. Almost everybody wants to be a player-manager; everyone wants to sell their player. So if any offer at all comes, then the player leaves. That is one of the problems (bedeviling the game)”, he concluded.

  • Coronavirus: Dominic Cummings ‘made second lockdown trip’

The prime minister’s chief aide Dominic Cummings is facing fresh allegations that he breached lockdown rules.

He and the government had said he acted “reasonably and legally” by driving from London to County Durham while his wife had Coronavirus symptoms.

The Observer and Sunday Mirror are now reporting he was seen in the North East on two more occasions, after recovering from his own COVID-19 symptoms and returning to work in London.

No 10 said the story is “inaccurate”.

Ministers have said Mr Cummings and his wife had chosen to self-isolate at a property adjacent to other family members in case they needed help with childcare.

Speaking to reporters outside his home in London on Saturday, he said he would not be resigning and had done the “right thing” by travelling 260 miles with his wife and young son to be near relatives when she developed COVID-19 symptoms at the end of March.

However, the two newspapers said witnesses have reported seeing Mr Cummings in Barnard Castle, more than 25 miles from Durham, on 12 April.

On 14 April, he was seen in London. According to the reports, he was spotted again in Houghall Woods near Durham on 19 April.

Mr Cummings is yet to publicly respond to the new claims, but the Sunday Telegraph reports that he told Downing Street that the allegations he made a second trip from London to Durham were “totally false”.

But the BBC’s political correspondent Iain Watson says ministers will be hoping that questions about Mr Cummings’ movements will not have dented public trust in the government’s lockdown guidance.

    Quit calls

The story of Mr Cummings’ journey to Durham originally appeared in the Guardian and Daily Mirror on Friday evening.

In response to the fresh claims in the papers’ Sunday publications, Downing Street said: “Yesterday the Mirror and Guardian wrote inaccurate stories about Mr Cummings.

“Today they are writing more inaccurate stories including claims that Mr Cummings returned to Durham after returning to work in Downing Street on 14 April.

“We will not waste our time answering a stream of false allegations about Mr Cummings from campaigning newspapers.”

Opposition parties renewed their calls for the prime minister’s adviser to go.

The SNP’s Ian Blackford said Mr Cummings “has to leave office”, while acting Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey told BBC Radio 5 Live: “If Dominic Cummings has not been sacked by tomorrow, I think the prime minister’s judgement is in serious doubt.”

    Ministerial backing

Government advice had been for people to stay at home during the first weeks of lockdown. Self-isolation at home continues to be advised for those with coronavirus symptoms.

However, ministers offered their support to Mr Cummings earlier in the day, with Health Secretary Matt Hancock tweeting that it was “entirely right” for the senior aide to find childcare.

Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove tweeted: “Caring for your wife and child is not a crime.”

England’s deputy chief medical officer Dr Jenny Harries also said all health guidance should be applied with “common sense”.

But following the fresh reports concerning the alleged second visit to County Durham, a Labour source said: “If these latest revelations are true, why on earth were Cabinet ministers sent out this afternoon to defend Dominic Cummings?”

Before the new allegations, both Labour and the SNP said Mr Cummings flouted the government’s own advice and called for an urgent inquiry into his conduct.

It comes as the government announced 282 more people had died with Coronavirus since Friday, across all settings, bringing the total to 36,675.

  • Russian women stuck in lockdown hell as abuse surges

Ineta Akhtyamova’s husband flew into a rage in late April, about a month into Moscow’s coronavirus lockdown.

She was preparing a meal in the small apartment she shares with her partner when he exploded, calling her names, hitting her and shouting at her to get out.

“So off I went. I just could not take it anymore,” said Akhtyamova, a 50-year-old singer who lost her income due to confinement restrictions.

“I’m bad if I stay quiet. I’m bad if I talk. I’m bad if I make soup. I’m bad if I cook potatoes,” she told AFP.

When her partner hit her before, she would run to friends. This time she had nowhere to go.

Friends were reluctant to take her in over fears of coronavirus infection, and two women’s shelters turned her away because of Moscow’s city-wide quarantine.

With the help of a crisis centre, Akhtyamova finally found temporary shelter in a small, two-star hotel in eastern Moscow.

Rights groups say that domestic violence has surged around the world since the start of lockdowns, with the stress caused by social isolation and fears around financial security straining even healthy relationships.

The quarantine has hit victims of domestic violence especially hard — some have seen verbal hostility escalate into physical abuse, and for others routine beatings have become even more severe.

Women in Russia have been left especially vulnerable.

    Suffer in silence

“The situation here is worse because there’s no law,” said Marina Pisklakova-Parker, a women’s rights campaigner.

In 2017, President Vladimir Putin decriminalised some forms of domestic violence and most abusers can get away with a fine.

Advocates say the lack of legislation, including restraining orders, as well as a shortage of shelters nationwide and police who are unresponsive to appeals for help, have left Russian women unprotected.

Every year, nearly 16.5 million women across the country fall victim to domestic violence, according to activists’ pre-quarantine estimates.

Pisklakova-Parker, founder of the ANNA women’s rights group, said they registered a 30 percent spike in calls to their nationwide hotline between February and late April.

Had Russia adopted a domestic violence law, coping with the upsurge would have been easier, she said.

Last month, Pisklakova-Parker and several other campaigners urged the government to urgently protect domestic abuse victims.

Authorities, they said, need to set up enough shelters and conduct an awareness-raising campaign on violence against women, among other measures.

Those calls have fallen on deaf ears.

The interior ministry said this month there was no evidence domestic violence was on the rise. On the contrary, it said, such crimes went down by nine percent in April compared to last year.

Alyona Sadikova, head of the Kitezh crisis centre, said they had received more than 400 calls for help since the enforcement of stay-at-home rules. Most of the victims said police did not help.

Before the pandemic, women could leave their abusers, find jobs and send children to kindergartens. Now, Sadikova said, many have adopted a different strategy: sit tight and suffer in silence.

“The country’s economic prospects are not clear,” Sadikova said. “So many have decided to endure it until the very end.”

Akhtyamova, the Latvian-born singer, has lived at the eastern Moscow hotel free-of-charge for the past three weeks.

It was Sadikova’s centre that helped her find the make-shift shelter and is now paying for her meals.

“I feel safe here,” Akhtyamova told AFP in a cafe which shares premises with the hotel.

“People are treating me so well here that I even forgot about my despot husband,” the bespectacled woman laughed.

    Worst still to come

Valentina Konstantinova, the hotel’s owner, said it and another she runs had offered refuge to two dozen domestic violence victims since the lockdown began.

One of her friends also briefly stayed at the hotel with her child.

Pisklakova-Parker said authorities should take action immediately because the worst is yet to come.

“What we are seeing now is just the beginning,” she said, adding many victims could not reach out for help because they are closely controlled by their partners.

More women and their abusers are also likely to lose jobs due to the economic crisis, which will exacerbate tensions, she said, even if restrictions are eased soon.

“When the quarantine is lifted, we will see aftershocks, waves of family violence,” said Pisklakova-Parker.

“That’s why it is very important to focus as much as possible on this problem now.”

  • Berlin WW2 bombing survivor Saturn the alligator dies in Moscow Zoo

An alligator who survived World War Two in Berlin and was rumoured – wrongly – to have belonged to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler has died in Moscow Zoo.

“Yesterday morning, our Mississippi alligator Saturn died of old age. He was about 84 years old – an extremely respectable age,” the zoo said.

Saturn was gifted to Berlin Zoo in 1936 soon after he was born in the US. He escaped the zoo being bombed in 1943.

British soldiers found him three years later and gave him to the Soviet Union.

How he spent the intervening years always remained a mystery, but since July 1946 the alligator has been a hit with visitors in Moscow.

“Moscow Zoo has had the honour of keeping Saturn for 74 years,” the zoo said in a statement.

“For us Saturn was an entire era, and that’s without the slightest exaggeration… He saw many of us when we were children. We hope that we did not disappoint him.”

The zoo reported that Saturn knew his keepers, loved being massaged with a brush – and was able to crack steel feeding tongs and bits of concrete with his teeth if irritated.

Mississippi alligators usually live to 30-50 years in the wild, it added.

Saturn may even have been the world’s oldest alligator – it’s impossible to say. Another male alligator, Muja who is at Belgrade Zoo in Serbia, is also in his 80s and still alive.

But it’s doubtful any alligator could compete with Saturn if it came to selling their memoirs.

The most headline grabbing detail is the rumour that Saturn had belonged in Hitler’s personal collection, which is untrue.

“Almost immediately after the arrival of the animal, the myth appeared that it was supposedly in Hitler’s collection, and not in the Berlin zoo,” Interfax news agency reports.

It is unclear how the rumour started.

Moscow Zoo dismissed such reports, noting that animals “do not belong to politics and mustn’t be held responsible for human sins”.

Saturn’s death-defying escape in 1943 is unlikely ever to be explained.

Berlin, the capital of Nazi Germany, was subjected to intense Allied bombing before the war ended in 1945.

The so-called Battle of Berlin began in November 1943 and the night of 22-23 November saw extensive damage to areas west of the centre, including the Tiergarten district where the city’s zoo is located.

Thousands of people were killed or injured and many of the zoo’s animals perished too.

The zoo’s aquarium building took a direct hit. One report said passers-by had seen the corpses of four crocodiles in the street outside, tossed there by the force of the blast.

Saturn somehow survived and then lived for three years in a city ravaged by war, and a climate unsuited to alligators.

It’s reported he will now be stuffed and exhibited in Moscow’s popular museum of biology named after Charles Darwin.

“My first point for Africa, my first concern, is that a lack of testing is leading to a silent epidemic in Africa. So we must continue to push leaders to prioritise testing,” special envoy Samba Sow is reported to have told a news conference on Monday.

There have been almost 3,400 deaths and almost 115,000 infections across Africa according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control – so far much lower rates than in parts of Europe and the US.

  • U.S. grants tentative go ahead for 15 air carriers to suspend service to 75 airports

The U.S. Transportation Department said late on Friday it had granted tentative approval to 15 airlines to temporarily halt service to 75 U.S. airports because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Airlines must maintain minimum service levels in order to receive government assistance but many have petitioned to stop service to airports with low passenger demand.

Both United Airlines (UAL.O) and Delta Air Lines (DAL.N) won tentative approval to halt flights to 11 airports, while JetBlue Airways Corp (JBLU.O), Alaska Airlines (ALK.N) and Frontier Airlines were approved to stop flights to five airports each. The department said all airports would continue to be served by at least one air carrier.

The Transportation Department said objections to the order can be filed until May 28.

U.S. air carriers are collectively burning through more than $10 billion in cash a month as travel demand remains a fraction of prior levels, even though it has rebounded slightly in recent weeks. They have parked more than half of their planes and cut thousands of flights.

The department has previously granted airlines waivers to cancel some additional flights and denied others. On May 12, the department said it would allow carriers to halt flights to up to 5% of required destinations.

Under the tentative order, Delta can halt service to Aspen, Colorado; Bangor, Maine; Flint, Michigan; Santa Barbara, California; and Lincoln, Nebraska, among other cities, while United can halt service to airports including Chattanooga, Tennessee; Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Key West, Florida; and Lansing and Kalamazoo, Michigan.

JetBlue can halt flights to Albuquerque, New Mexico; Palm Springs and Sacramento, California; Sarasota, Florida; and Worcester, Massachusetts.

Alaska can suspend flights to Charleston, South Carolina; Columbus, Ohio; El Paso and San Antonio, Texas; and New Orleans.

Only half of eligible carriers have applied to cut more flights.

  • ‘I shared my coronavirus status to prevent stigma’

Zambia’s Information Minister Dora Siliya says she publicly shared her Covid-19 test results to fight stigma associated with the respiratory illness caused by coronavirus.

She told BBC’s Newsday programme that she was afraid the stigma would impede the fight against the virus like it did for HIV in Zambia.

Ms Siliya said she felt that if her test results had leaked it would undermine the fight against stigma.

“I felt if I did not share my status in terms of the Covid, people will be treating this the same way they do with HIV.”

The minister said some Zambians still don’t believe Covid-19 is real.

She said behaviorial change has only been seen among the elite in the city, but those in rural areas still think coronavirus only affects those who travel abroad.

“There are people who still think it is a disease for those other people.”

In recent times, the music scene has been hit with lyrical beefs from female Ghanaian musicians which has attracted mixed feelings from music lovers.

Not long after, the lyrical beef turned physical between two of the musicians, Freda Rhymz and Sista Afia as the two were captured in a video exchanging blows.

She made this revelation in an interview with Foster Romanus on the Late Nite Celebrity Show.

When quizzed by Foster Romanus on how she was going to achieve that, she responded : “Comedians can beef through concepts. You know I can create content so I can attack you through my content.”

Even though, she described herself as the “queen of Ghana comedy”, she admitted that she needed to learn a thing or two about stand-up comedy as that field was not her specialty.

Even so, she was insistent that she will not learn from Jacinta, who is well versed in stand-up comedy. She stressed that Ghanaian comedienne, Jacinta, could not claim the title of queen of comedy.

  • Mahama rejected me, he didn’t give me 1 pesewas – Sam George

Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram constituency, Samuel Nartey George has recalled some difficulties he went through prior to the moment he defeated the incumbent MP, E. T. Mensah.

    Working with E. T. Mensah

According to him, he offered himself to work with Hon. E. T. Mensah for 3 years without collecting a salary as a Personal Assistant(PA).

“I worked with Hon. E. T. Mensah for 3 years without collecting a salary . . . he didn’t need a PA but I offered myself to work for him because I wanted to learn . . . he didn’t ask me to come for employment . . . so why would he?”

” . . I did everything from washing plates to cleaning shoes to carrying bags to driving him, I did all . . . and I still see him as my father,” he told Adakabre Frimpong Manso.

He said though E.T. Mensah had earlier decided not to run for the Ningo Prampram seat again, things turned around due to so many factors.

“I personally booked an appointment at his office to inform him about my intention and also seek his blessings to contest the parliamentary seat in 2015 . . . he told me his time was not up as he was having a second thought about it,” he said.

He said he sought refuge and encouragement from his wife to have the courage to contest the then MP.

During a one-on-one interview on ‘Me Man Nti’ programme on Neat FM, he spoke of betrayal, unfair treatment and among other things.

    Mahama’s ‘betrayal’

He also narrated how former President John Mahama ‘turned his back on him’ during the time.

“I was very hurt, very very hurt and I have had the opportunity to discuss this issue with President John Dramani Mahama post everything . . . ”

Narrating his ordeal, he said President Mahama told him there was no way he would support him against a senior member of his then administration.

” E. T. Mensah is a senior member of your administration, I am one of the younger members of your administration, you will not support me against a senior member,” he said those were the words of former President Mahama and he “felt pain”.

He said he had sacrificed a lot for John Mahama and didn’t expect that he would say that.

“He said he had too much respect for E. T. Mensah . . . he told me he was not going to be the one to fuel my ambition to unseat Hon. E. T. Mensah . . . I am saying it with all conviction and the truth that President Mahama did not give me one pesewa, one pesewa, he didn’t give to me. I was very pained,” he said.

“It was one of the few times if not the only time President Mahama had turned men down,” he added.

    Selling my house

He narrated how he had to sell his house to fund the campaign.

” . . my wife was 8 months pregnant, I had to sell my house to fund that campaign because nobody was going to give me money, nobody believed that I will win that election . . . my wife told me if you do this and we lose don’t come home . . . I was a month away from my primaries,” he said.

  • Nii Lantey lied about Jamestown Harbour project – Bannerman

Chairman of the National Premix Fuel Committee, Nii Lante Bannerman, says claims by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodio, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, that the Jamestown Fishing Harbour project in Accra is being implemented through a loan facility secured under the erstwhile Mills/Mahama administration, is grossly false.

According to him, “it is therefore disingenuous for the MP to claim that the project is being implemented through a loan facility secured under the erstwhile Mills/Mahama administration.”

Reacting to a Facebook post by the NDC, he said: “The truth is that the project is being implemented under a GRANT facility arranged by the current Akufo-Addo led NPP administration from the Chinese government.”

“It is a fact that Ghana received ONLY $600million as the first tranche of the $3billion CDB loan facility that the Hon. MP alluded to. If indeed the Jamestown Harbour was captured in the second tranche which Ghana never received, then it goes to justify the fact that the efforts of the NDC to have the project started turned out to be a faux pas and that NO funding was secured for the project,” Bannerman, who is the parliamentary candidate aspirant of the NPP in the Odododiodio Constituency said.

“For the Hon. MP to also suggest that the initial designs and drawing of the project from 2011 should be maintained shows how outmoded and archaic his thoughts are,” he added.

    Consultations

According to him, it is also preposterous for the MP to say that the demolition exercise at the site for the project was done without notices to the settlers there.

“I can recall series of engagements at different levels that took place prior to the sod cutting by the President on 6th December, 2018,” he stated.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly AMA and the Ghana Canoe Fishermen Council organized a durbar in October and November 2018 at the Jamestown Beach to inform occupants about the project, he added.

“As a requirement by law, notices were posted on the buildings in early November of the same year. Two weeks later, the AMA pulled many of the structures down to pave way for the sod cutting.”

  • Passengers can check in or out luggages at Kumasi Airport by 2021 – Gabby reveals

Contrary to what has been speculated that the construction of Kumasi International Airport has come to a halt, governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) strongman, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has disclosed the project is on course.

Although the project has seen some delays with procurement, following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, Gabby Darko indicated, travellers from Europe, US and elsewhere in the world will soon be able to check-in or out their luggage right in the country’s second-largest city.

He revealed that over 50,000 passengers are expected to use the Kumasi Airport yearly, starting from 2021.

“…The construction of the Kumasi International Airport is on course, despite some delays with procurement due to Covid-19. Soon, you will be able to check-in or out your luggage in Kumasi, flying to or in from Europe, US or elsewhere. Over 500,000 passengers a year are expected to use this airport from 2021”, his Facebook post read.

Estimated at 66.3 million euros, the project, awarded by President Akufo-Addo will involve the extension of the runway from the current 1,981 metres to 2,300 metres, an addition of 319 metres, and the construction of a new terminal building with the capacity to hold one million passengers per year.

The implementation of the project has since created jobs for more than 1,200 masons, steel benders, tilers and carpenters within the Ashanti Region.

  • Well fight for job security amidst impact of Coronavirus ICU pledges

The Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) has commended the public service and some multinational companies for ensuring job security amidst the outbreak of COVID-19 in Ghana.

According to the union,  but for its timely intervention, many more employees would have lost their jobs due to the pandemic.

So far, the Ghana Tourism Federation for instance says about 800,000 workers in the hospitality industry have lost their jobs due to the pandemic.

As the Union celebrates its 60th anniversary, the General Secretary of ICU, Solomon Kotei says his outfit will continue to fight for the rights of workers in Ghana.

“Because we are very dominant in the public sector, there is no indication of layoffs to come. But when you look at the private sectors, individuals and the multinationals they have not given any signal of wanting to lay off any worker. In fact, they have not drawn us to the table of whether or not if they are going to do some salary cuts or what have you. This gives us the spirit that we need to go the extra mile to make sure that the businesses are sustained so that after this COVID-19, all of us will be able to find our jobs and keep our homes running.”

As the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic continues to widen globally and in Ghana, some companies in the country have shut down their operations due to low patronage.

Some have already laid-off casual workers and are preparing to cut down on permanent staff.

According to them, it was no longer prudent to continue operations when the numbers have dropped drastically; while they still pay salaries, bills and taxes.

Already, about 94,000 teachers from over 4,300 private schools in the country have not been paid due to the challenges imposed by the coronavirus outbreak, according the Ghana National Council of Private

  • Daffiama community seeks support to complete school project

Residents of Daffiama in the Daffiama/Bussie/Issah District have appealed to stakeholders and the general public to support them to complete a kitchen they are constructing for the Saapare Basic School in the community.

They said the kitchen construction project was initiated by the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) to secure a decent cooking place for the school children who were benefiting from the Ghana School Feeding Programme.

Mr Peter Dakurah, the PTA Chairman of the school, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said since the school was constructed about a decade ago, there had not been a decent cooking place for the school forcing the school caterers to cook under makeshift sheds.

He explained the shed under which they cooked the food was destroyed by a rainstorm about three months ago while the schools were closed down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said the PTA decided to build the kitchen to enable the cooks at the school to prepare food for the school children when schools resume as the rains set in.

Mr Dakurah said the building has been completed through a communal labour, but that they could not raise funds to purchase cement to plaster the structure.

“If we are not able to plaster it fast and it rains heavily, it will fall and that will mean that all our efforts are in vain. Roofing is not the problem but the plastering is our major problem”, he explained.

The PTA Chairman said they had contacted both the Member of Parliament (MP) and District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area but that they had not yet received any support from them.

Mr Dakurah pleaded with benevolent organisations and individuals to come to their aid by providing them with cement to ensure that the structure is completed.

The Bono Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC has asked the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to invite former President John Mahama for further questioning after levelling three counter accusations against the latter.

Abronye DC was invited by the Police following an official complaint lodged by former President, John Dramani Mahama over allegations of a planned assassination of some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

However, speaking in an interview on Neat FM’s Me Man Nti programme, he denied making any false publication against the former President.

He said apart from writing his statement, he made three more allegations against the former President.

“I responded to his allegation and asked the police to conduct a thorough investigation because I will never accept that I peddled falsehood . . . I responded to his claims with three counter-accusations from me,” he indicated.

    Mahama’s petition

In a petition to the Criminal Investigation Department signed by his lawyer, Tony Lithur, John Mahama said Abronye DC had alleged some NPP personalities will be assassinated by NDC hirelings doing the bidding of the former President.

Mr. Mahama in the petition described the claims as false and urged the CID to probe the NPP Bono Regional Chairman.

“His Excellency, John Dramani Mahama, has firmly instructed me to say that the allegations are, of course, false; and for the avoidance of doubt would like to state that neither the NDC nor he has planned to hire, hired or cause to be hired, or instructed any person or persons to murder or assassinate anybody,” portions of the petition read.
