  • New Register: EC fully aware of challenges ahead with limited time – Sylvia Annor

Madam Sylvia Annor, Head of Public Affairs at the Electoral Commission, has affirmed that no political party should sympathize with them about the number of months left for the 2020 general elections to take place and their insistence on compiling a new voters’ register despite the limited time.

According to her, as the election management body, they have weighed all the challenges involved and are already aware of the consequences involved in compiling a new voter register with limited time available.

“Even though we will encounter challenges, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages to be encountered during and after the exercise,” she said on UTV’s ‘Adekye Nsroma’ morning show programme.

” . . nobody should feel we are under pressure to do this because we are not,” she insisted.

Madam Sylvia Annor indicated that the Commission has outlined safety precautions to be observed during the registering period to ensure Ghanaians are safe.

She said they are taking every possible lawful step to compile a new voter register to help the country have a fair and credible register for elections.

    EC Relentless

The Electoral Commission of Ghana says it will definitely compile a new Voters’ Register despite calls for them to reconsider due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

There have been several calls for the electoral body to only conduct a limited registration exercise instead of compiling a new voters’ register.

Per the argument, the number of people that will take part in a limited registration exercise will be less than in a new voters’ register and can be controlled.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has opposed the EC’s decision for a new register before the outbreak of the virus with one of their reason being that it is expensive. Now, their argument is that it is not safe to compile a new voters’ register because of the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, they have accused the EC of ganging up with the National Identification Authority to rig the upcoming election in favour of the ruling government

According to Mr Dickson Baba Nsoh, a Clinical Psychologist at the Regional Hospital, more than 10 people have been treated and discharged at the facility although it did not include those receiving treatment at home.

“I would not want to give statistics because when it comes to COVID-19, there is somebody who should be doing that but far more than 10 persons have been discharged,” the Clinical Psychologist disclosed.

Mr Nsoh disclosed this at a training session on stigmatization, organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in Bolgatanga. The Upper East Region has so far recorded 26 confirmed COVID-19 cases with two deaths.

  • Lets begin to look into virtual teaching Educationist

Ms Eunice Araba Turkson, an education consultant in the United States, has called on Ghanaian authorities to begin looking into virtual teaching for effective education of children.

She said innovation and creativity were crucial as far as education, especially inclusive education, was concerned.

“Students are more likely to synthesize the information taught, bring more joy, and make their educational experience more meaningful,” she said.

Ms Turkson, who recently participated in a webinar, dubbed: “Inclusive Education: Before, during and after COVID-19,” told the Ghana News Agency on Saturday that children were missing out on a lot of things during this COVID-19 period.

“Children all over the world are missing out on a lot of things including social and emotional interactions. This is because children are not going to school,” she said.

She suggested that for inclusive education to be effective, classrooms could adopt a co-teaching approach where every classroom would have one general education teacher and a special educator, working collaboratively to achieve a common goal.

Co-teaching would enable the teachers to complement each other and serve as positive role models for their students, she said.

“Children pick on the behaviours of adults around them and in co-teaching, teachers need to be intentional about modelling positive behaviours for children to emulate,” she said.

This teaching model, as well as others, could be explored in an effort to achieve effective inclusive education in Ghanaian schools, Ms Turkson said.

  • Central Regional house of chiefs moves to sanitise land transactions

The Central Regional House of Chiefs in a resolution to the Office of the Administrator of Stool Lands and the Lands Commission, has called for the involvement of paramount chiefs in land sales and transactions.

This, they said would go a long way to address issues of multiple sales and allocation of land and its related disputes, which were rampant in the region to foster greater development.

This came to light when officials of the Office of Administrator of Stool Lands and the Lands Commission Secretariat engaged the chiefs on the rational development of stool lands in Cape Coast.

The chiefs were largely educated and introduced to the land administration laws, constitutional provisions as well as other customary practices concerning stool lands administration.

They raised concerns about multiple sales and allocation of lands, land-related litigation, and as well inquired about the authority of chiefs and paramount chiefs in the scheme of land administration and royalties.

Obrempong Nyanful Krampah XI, President of the Regional House of Chiefs explained that their mandate was in accordance with sections 45 and 46 of the Chieftaincy Act 2008 (Act 759) regarding the alienation of stool properties.

“We are doing all this to clean the system and ensure that we do not allow land litigation to hinder our progress and development as a region”, he stated.

He added that with the new measures, issues of land guards, land disputes, and litigation would be a thing of the past in the region.

Obrempong Nyanful Krampah said involving paramount chiefs in the acquisition of land anywhere in the region would require that traditional councils assisted buyers to do the necessary documentation.

He explained that before one could register a land, the person had to secure a seal attestation from the traditional council, a practice he believed would greatly help in eliminating multiple sales and allocation of land.

He underscored the need to do away with land litigation to boost investor confidence in the region.

Mrs Christie Bobbobee, Administrator of Stool Lands, said the constitution enjoined the office together with the Lands Commission to occasionally engage with landowners and traditional authorities in the rational development of stool lands.

She asked the public, especially sub and divisional chiefs to collaborate with their paramount chiefs to manage lands in their jurisdictions to bring about the desired development.

Mrs Bobobee said her outfit would continue to engage chiefs on the rational development of stool lands and land administration as enshrined in the constitution for a better land administration in the country.

The Office of the administrator of stool lands is in the process of assisting chiefs to create a customary land secretariat in their paramountcies dedicated to land documentation and land-related issues.

Ghanaian military man, Nana Adu Boafo, has opinionated that a lot of the men who hit the gym, specifically for bodybuilding, are impotent.

He explained this notion during an interview with Dr. Cann on Showbiz Xtra, which airs on Happy FM that, because of the supplements that they take in to build up their muscles, a lot of them have dead reproductive organs.

“The chemicals rather weaken them but for us the slim ones who only eat heavy foods like kokonte to supplement our exercising, our reproductive organs are strong”, he said.

The military man clarified that exercising, otherwise known as keeping fit, is different from bodybuilding, hence he is not insinuating that every man who steps foot in the gym is impotent, rather a large percentage of those who take in supplements.

  • Have you been able to investigate JB Danquah’s death? – A Plus asks Pius Hadzide

Founder of The People’s Project (TPP), Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has reacted to government’s claims of thoroughly investigating the death of former President of Ghana, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills.

Deputy Information Minister, Pius Enam Hadzide in a recent interview on Okay FM indicated government will soon begin investigations into what caused the death of the ex-Ghana leader.

This was after the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, dragged NPP’s Kwame Baffoe a.k.a Abronye DC to the Police CID for accusing him [JM] of killing Prof. Mills, his predecessor.

While speaking on the Accra based radio station, Pius Enam Hadzidze assured Ghanaians that government is keen on investigating the matter to end the brouhaha on who and what killed Atta Mills.

“…Currently, the lawyers of the former President have written to the CID that they are being accused, which shows Mahama even wants an investigation. When this matter is investigated, that is how we can bring finality to the matter.

“…Why I think there should be an investigation is because one, he is a citizen and secondly, he was a sitting President and so Ghanaians are entitled to an explanation into the death so that if there was any mistake made, we can learn from them and prevent the recurrence of something like this”, Pius Hadzide said.

But in response to Hadzide’s comments, A Plus asked whether his government has done enough to investigate the cause of the death of their own party member, the former Abuakwa North MP, Joseph Boakye Danquah Adu.

“…Have you been able to get to the bottom of your own party member, JB Dankwa’s death?”, he rhetorically quizzed.

    JB’s death

On 9 February 2016, he was stabbed dead in the early hours of the morning. Subsequently, the police arrested a man for the murder.

The man, Daniel Asiedu, later confessed to killing the MP, in a struggle as he tried to rob him, and has since been charged with murder.

According to its Payroll Report, it has provided the details to the heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies/Metropolitan, Municipal, District Assemblies to investigate and submit a report for further review within 3 months after the publication of this report.

This will ascertain the authenticity of the 366 employees.

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Ministry of Roads and Highways, Ministry of Information and National Commission for Civic Education and Office of the Civil Service had the least numbers of one each.

“Our examination showed that two or more employees shared same records. This became obvious as two or more bore same names and date of birth.”

Out of the 412 affected employees, the Audit Service follow-up to 46 sampled employees confirmed this assertion.

The La Dadekotopon MP, Vincent Sowah Odotei has clarified that the revocation of his appointment as a Deputy Minister of Communications had nothing to do with poor performance.

In April, Mr. Odotei was replaced by Alexander Kodwo Kom Abban, the MP for Gomoa West and former Deputy Minister for Health.

Speaking on the Point Blank segment of Eyewitness News, Mr. Odotei said he was neither incompetent nor corrupt while serving as Deputy Minister of Communications.

“The President has a prerogative to hire and fire. I am not incompetent and I am not corrupt. I will be forever grateful to him [for the opportunity to serve for some time].”

He pointed out that he had a conversation with the President about the reasons for his revocation but refused to give details.

  • NPP doesn’t need EC to win elections, Ghanaians have tested our record – Sammi Awuku

National Organizer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku says the NPP is not conspiring with the Electoral Commission (EC) and the National Identification Authority (NIA) to rig the 2020 elections.

According to him, there has never occurred a time in the history of Ghana that the NPP has relied on the Electoral Commission to clinch victory in an election and it won’t be in 2020 that the party will need the help of the Commission.

Sammi Awuku, making his submissions on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, further stated that there is no merit in the claims by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the EC is in collusion with the NPP to skew the outcome of the impending elections in favour of President Nana Akufo-Addo.

He explained that the ruling party has been consistent with their call for a new voters’ register and their reason is that the current register have defects that need to be corrected and compiling a new one is the best alternative.

He wondered why the NDC doesn’t raise objections to the EC conducting limited registration exercises to review the register but rather have a problem with compiling a new register.

Mr. Awuku rehashed the words of the 2020 Campaign Manager of the NPP, Peter Mac-Manu, saying ”we don’t need the Electoral Commission to win election 2020”.

To him, the “NPP will go into the 2020 elections on the strength of our record. Ghanaians have tested us and know that we have fulfilled our promise of free SHS. When we said we will have a renewed focus on agriculture because once upon a time, we used to import Kontomire and plantains from Ivory Coast and tomatoes from Burkina but today we will grow more and rather supply our neighbours in these countries . . .So, we won’t go into the 2020 elections counting on the Electoral Commission unless the NDC feels that they relied on the EC during their time. We have never relied on the Electoral Commission since 1992”.

  • Focus on marketing Mahama well, cease needless attack on EC – Sammi Awuku to NDC

New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Organizer, Sammi Awuku has advised the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to cease incessant attacks on the Electoral Commission (EC) and rather concentrate on marketing their 2020 Presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama.

Contributing to a panel discussion on the Friday edition of ‘Kokrokoo’ on Peace FM, Sammi Awuku questioned the NDC’s logic in their claim that the EC and the National Identification Authority (NIA) are in cahoots with the governing party to rig this year’s elections.

Giving clues to the NDC on how to prepare for the 2020 elections, Sammi Awuku stated that elections are won at the polling stations and so the opposition party should do their homework well and stop the baseless accusations against the Commission over something they know cannot happen in Ghana.

”In today’s Ghana, it will be a miracle and an accident in history for the Chairperson of the EC and her Commissioners will rig the elections for a political party. It will be difficult . . . What you have to do is that be vigilant at the polling station to know that what is declared there is what you have,” he said.

He added that,”… work hard. Sell your candidate. Market your candidate”, he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi, adding that ”we (NPP) make sure to police the ballot. We make sure that the votes tally with our results and then we ensure that our collation is timely. So, we compare our results with the results that the Electoral Commission announces. NDC, I can confidently tell you they couldn’t collate their results in 2016. In fact, when you take the Kwesi Botchwey report, it’s one of the reasons because they didn’t even know where they won and where they lost, and you can’t blame the EC for your inability to open your eyes,” he said.

  • What document proves nationality better than birth certificate? – Kwesi Pratt questions EC

Seasoned Journalist, Kwesi Pratt Jnr., has expressed his profound disappointment in the Electoral Commission (EC) over its decision to use the Ghana card and Ghanaian passport as the only legal documents for the compilation of a new voters’ register.

The Electoral Commission has laid before Parliament to amend Constitutional Instrument (C.I) 91 to use only the Ghana card and the passport for the registration exercise, which means NHIS card and driver’s licence holders are not eligible to register their names, except they provide the two legitimized documents.

The EC has justified their decision saying their approach will help to eliminate unqualified names and ensure a credible register.

The Commission has also assured Ghanaians of a free and fair election this year.

Kwesi Pratt Jnr is however dissatisfied with the EC’s decision, asking why the Commission is not adding the birth certificate to the requirements for the registration.

Mr. Pratt explained on ‘Kokrokoo’ on Peace FM that the birth certificate is a legitimate requirement for the processing of a passport in Ghana, and so if the EC is ready to accept the passport, then they should equally allow birth certificate holders to participate in the exercise.

”What document proves nationality better than the birth certificate? But here it is that you can’t use your birth certificate to do the registration. What is the meaning of that?” he questioned the EC.

  • Coronavirus: Clinical psychologist advocates use of traditional system to tackle secondary stigma

A clinical psychologist and a senior lecturer at the School of Public Health at the University of Ghana, Dr Emmanuel Asampong has advocated the use of traditional system as the perfect way of dealing with Covid-19 stigma.

Expressing worry about the high rise of stigma against recovered covid-19 patients, he suggested to the state to urgently resort to community engagement with the traditional authorities on how best this stigma can be handled.

Health authorities say stigma against persons who have contracted Covid-19 contributes to people failing to accept positive test results.

As a result, a number of people cannot be traced for isolation and treatment, threatening further spread of the disease.

Dr. Asampong reiterated the need for community members to be sensitized on the dire effects of covid-19 stigma on the community at large.

According to him, the moment a neighbour decides to stigmatize a victim of coronavirus, the entire society eventually becomes affected which he termed secondary stigma.

Speaking on Adekye Mu Nsem programme on Akoma FM in Kumasi, he cautioned that if efforts are not enhanced to handle the stigma, the country would soon experience various forms of rejection of people from affected zones to unaffected communities.

“People naturally forget that stigmatization against a neighbour who has recovered from Covid-19 would have a great impact on the community, district and the region eventually. Government must quickly use the traditional system to facilitate the process,” he told Sir John, host of the Show.

Ghana has been battling with the rise of stigma against people recovered from covid-19 in various homes and communities.

  • NCA Trial: Alhaji Salifu was jailed lawfully, ignore NDC – NPP pleads with Yagbonwura

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Savannah Region has appealed to the Yagbonwura, Overlord of Gonja, to ignore a petition presented to him by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) requesting of him to demand answers from the President on why Alhaji Osman Minima Salifu, a chief within his kingdom, has been imprisoned.

The NPP contend that Alhaji Osman Minima Salifu was lawfully tried and convicted and that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has nothing to do with it.

“Alhaji Osman Mimina Salifu was a Deputy National Security Coordinator of the John Mahama Government. Investigations into his role in the purchase of equipment in collaboration with the National Communication Authority (NCA) were conducted in line with the laws of the republic of Ghana. Alhaji Salifu was arraigned before a High Court of competent jurisdiction presided over by His Lordship Justice Kyei Baffour, tried in accordance with the criminal laws of Ghana. Alhaji Salifu was afforded all the opportunities under the laws of our country and he fully defended himself. At the end of the criminal trial, Alhaji Salifu was found guilty of the charges of conspiracy to wilfully causing financial loss to the state in contravention of the Public Procurement Act, 2003 (Act 921) and intentionally misapplying public property.

Our brother Alhaji Salifu unfortunately could not run away from the long arm of the law and has been handed a jail term of five (5) years,” the NPP explained in a press conference.

The NPP then emphasized that the President had nothing at all to do with the trial as the courts are independent.

“Firstly, we as members of the NPP in the region do not intend to join the drama of our brothers from the NDC except to sympathise with Alhaji Salifu. The NDC sought to twist issues as if it was President Akufo-Addo who jailed Alhaji Salifu knowing full well that President Akufo Addo has absolutely no control, influence or authority over the courts of Ghana,” Fredrick Tahiru of the NPP Regional Communications Directorate stated.

The NPP further chastised the NDC for seeking to involve our revered chiefs in criminal prosecution which could spell doom for the country where convicts would seek to run to chiefs when they are convicted.

“The action by the NDC to draw the office of his Royal Majesty of Gonjaland Yagbonwura Tumtumba Boresa Jakpa I into the issue is misplaced, highly mischievous and will open the doors to other Ghanaians to run for refuge in palaces of our revered chiefs when the laws of the land catch up with them,” he pointed out.

The NPP also stated that claims that the Savannah Region has been ignored in terms of plans to build regional and district hospitals are completely false since a regional hospital and two district hospitals are earmarked to be built in the region.

“The claim by the NDC that Savannah Region was excluded from the District Hospitals Programme of the Akufo-Addo Government is completely false… the letter issued by the Hon. Minister for Local Government and Rural Development has Savannah Region as part of this Programme. Savannah Region will benefit from two (2) District Hospitals and One (1) Regional Hospital,” Mr Tahiru stated.

The NDC had petitioned the Yagbonwura to seek answers from the President as to why Alhaji Osman Minima Salifu has been imprisoned, and why he has sidelined the region with regards to the building of regional and district hospitals.

  • Michael Essien shares spectacular anecdotes about his time at SC Bastia

Former Ghana midfielder Michael Essien has shared an incredible insight into his time at French side SC Bastia.

Essien started his career playing for Ghana Premier League side Liberty Professionals.

Now 37, Essien had a trial at English Premier League giants Manchester United but due to lack of work permit, the move did not materialize.

In 2000, he moved to France to join SC Bastia, where he would spend three seasons and appear in over 60 matches before joining then Ligue 1 title holders Lyon in 2003. At Lyon, Essien won back-to-back league titles in 200304 and 200405, and won Ligue 1 Player of the Year in 2005.

The ‘Bison’ as he is affectionately called recounted his humble beginning at Bastia, where he was converted into a versatile midfielder.

“When I moved to Bastia it was difficult because that was the first time I moved away from my mum to a different country. I was really attached to her so it was difficult but I didn’t think about that because I knew it’s a big opportunity for me to make a career in Europe,” Essien said on ConvosWithCarol which was monitored by GHANASoccernet.com

“I remember they signed me for six months to monitor my development and luckily enough I was drafted into the first team. The coach really liked me but he had an issue with me because I couldn’t speak French so he spoke to the management team to force me to learn the language. I took my French classes after every training session with this English professor so it became easy for me to grasp the language.”

“I continued training with the first team in the morning, sometimes for ten minutes but it was a really good learning curve. In the evening I’ll train with the reserve side. I went to France as a centre-back. It’s a position I’d played during my formative years but at Bastia I was tried in a lot of positions.”

“I moved to midfield in my first year at the club. I remember we had this game against Monaco at home and one of our midfielders got injured so the coach asked if I can play there and I said yes, I will. It was a big match at that time because Monaco were on top of the league table. They had all the big players but I didn’t blink when the coach asked me if I can play. Thankfully, I had one of my best games for Bastia that year. I established myself in the first team due to my versatility. I was playing midfield, right-back and centre-back.”

“I remember I played centre-back against Nantes. They had this striker who was the best in the league at the time but the coach told me to follow him everywhere he went and I did my job perfectly.”

“Unfortunately the coach left in the second year and we got a new coach [Robert Nouzaret]. During our pre-season, the coach said he will not deploy me in defense anymore because he wants move me into midfield and I agreed because all I wanted was to play football. That’s how I started to establish myself in the first team,” Essien said.

Essien spent nine years at Stamford Bridge after signing from Lyon in 2005 for a reported fee of £24.4m.

He won two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, a League Cup and a Champions League during his time at Chelsea.

  • CNN: Bodies are piling up in Ghana’s morgues as families resist smaller Covid-era burials

Inside the morgue at the Pantang Hospital in Accra, Ghana, a stench of decaying bodies pervades a room where bodies placed in coffins have begun to spill onto the open entrance space.

“We are running out of space,” the hospital’s director, Dr. Frank Baning, told CNN at the facility based in the northern part of Ghana’s Greater Accra region.
Since the coronavirus pandemic put a stop to large public gatherings, relatives have opted to store corpses of their loved ones in morgues for longer than usual until they can hold a proper funeral.
“It has been difficult because there are not many other mortuaries around to hold the bodies,” Baning said.

    ‘Only if we are forced’

Ghanaian funerals usually last several days and up to a week in some parts. They are deeply symbolic ceremonies involving thousands of mourners to celebrate the life of the deceased.
So it was a bitter pill to swallow for many, when the country’s president, Nana Akufo-Addo, imposed the ban on large gatherings.
He offered an alternative: perform a private burial with no more than 25 guests.
Ghana currently has more than 6,486 cases of the coronavirus and 31 deaths have been confirmed, according to latest figures from the health ministry. Earlier this month, Akufo-Addo extended the restriction of public gatherings until May 31.
A few families have taken this route, but by and large, many relatives have opted to wait until the ban is lifted to bury their loved ones.
Chris Awuyah, a Ghanaian professor based in the United States, lost his uncle in Ghana to natural causes in February.
“Over 2,000 people were expected to be present at his funeral,” he told CNN. All of that changed when government restrictions prevented the funeral from happening as planned.
“A large part of funerals is about bringing families together. That matters to us,” says Awuyah, whose deceased 87-year-old uncle, Jonas Awuyah, was considered the head of the family.
“We are hopeful we can have a proper funeral for him.”
He acknowledges that his family still has not come to a definitive conclusion as to whether to bury his uncle privately or postpone the burial to a later date. But he hinted that he is willing to wait for as long as possible until a proper funeral can be planned.
“The only way we will hold [the funeral] privately is if our hands are tied and we are forced. We dread having to make this decision.”

    A risk to health workers

Meanwhile, at Pantang, some have expressed concern because the number of bodies at its morgue has created congestion, posing a health risk to workers serving on the front lines.
Thomas Awuku has worked at Pantang’s morgue for 27 years. According to the World Health Organization, there are risks for those handling dead bodies “if the deceased are infected with [a] highly infectious disease.”
Awuku told CNN that the hospital has taken all proper measurements to ensure the safety of its workers “and will keep the bodies we already have as a respect to the families.”
Despite the overflow of bodies, the hospital is reluctant to resort to mass burials because the WHO cautions that this can have detrimental psychological effects and ” “traumatize families and communities.”
It is part of the reason why Pantang Hospital is working with families to store the bodies for as long as possible, says Awuku.
The Ghana Health Service did not immediately respond for a request to comment and the country’s health minister declined to comment when reached by CNN.

    A huge toll

At Gillman and Abbey Funeral Services located in Accra, they have also seen a rise in the number of bodies stored in their morgues.
Storing bodies there is charged at a daily rate but fewer families are arranging for bodies to be removed.
Administrator Lawrence Apaloo says the pandemic has been “completely negative for the business.”
“Sure, the longer the body is here the higher the bill will be,” he says. “But it is unpredictable to know when the family will come to collect the body.”
Other services Gillman and Abbey provide, like pall bearing, hearse rentals, the selling of caskets and venue decorations, have come to a complete halt, he says.
“Everything is on hold and no one knows when things will come to normal again. It has taken a huge toll.”

  • Surviving Covid-19: How Dr Joan Woode overcame stigma on her road to recovery

A doctor at the Neonatal Unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital who became infected with Covid-19 has bemoaned the stigma she suffered at the hands of some health workers in another department.

Speaking exclusively to Adom News, Dr Joan Woode said fear gripped her especially when uncertainty crept in about what could happen to her in the days that followed her test.

Dr Woode said she woke up one morning in March and noticed she has lost her sense of smell. She was not alarmed at first but became quite concerned when the following day, she could not smell her favourite perfume but others could.

Though she entertained fears, Dr Woode explained that she had not come into contact with anyone with the virus hence, her conviction she did not have the virus.

But her worst fear was confirmed after she called in the emergency team to carry out her test. She received the results after five days and was positive. Unfortunately, her nanny was also infected. But they both exhibited different signs. While her nanny was very ill, she was asymptomatic.

Dr Joan Woode interacting with Adom News editor Martha Crentsil Acquah

But her child who was under six-years-old was not infected.

Dr Woode explains, they could not even observe social distance with the child who only followed the Covid-19 protocols strictly. She explained they adjusted to doing extra cleaning at home for the three weeks they remained indoors using bleach and other disinfectants.

After two weeks of treatment, they took the test again and Dr Woode tested positive while her nanny became negative. She then continued her treatment for another week before testing negative.

Dr Joan Woode is a doctor at the Neonatal Unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital

“Taking the test for the second negative was not easy at all. I was afraid of the outcome but I eventually went through,” Dr. Joan Woode said.

She recounts the amazing support she received from her colleagues at work and family while in isolation. She said “some come and leave food at my door, while others offered to buy my drugs for me. Others even call me on the phone and read the Bible to encourage me.”

But there were some health workers who stigmatised against her even when her test result was not in.

“Some other doctors and nurses in other departments started complaining enquiring why I came to their department when I had Covid-19. But at that time, I did not even know my status until the results came back positive,” adding “these comments really affected me.”

Now she is fully recovered and sharing her story to encourage others and dispel myths that Covid-19 is not real.
