  • Ibrahim Mahama paying A Plus ‘to spew nonsense’ – Man alleges

  • We’re not in a hurry to name Covid-19 infected MPs – Speaker

The Speaker of Parliament has stated that it is not the responsibility of anyone or institution to unilaterally put out in the public domain the names of persons who have tested positive for the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in Ghana.

He said engaging in such acts only amounted to sensationalism that could fuel stigma about the disease and against individuals and families affected by the disease.

According to him, it was only those who had tested positive for the disease that had the right to do so, reports Graphic Online’s Parliamentary reporter, Nana Konadu Agyeman.

“We should not be in a hurry to unilaterally put out in public domain anyone who has tested positive. We should not sensationalise this as news,” he said on the floor of Parliament Wednesday.

“You cannot unilaterally put into the public realm that a person is positive, let everybody know this, let every lady and gentleman, every person know this in this Republic, and it has been well stated in this Honourable House. You cannot unilaterally put in the public realm that a person is positive.”

“It is only for an individual to voluntarily, put it in the public realm and we are all learning from this as descent and honourable people and this Honourable House will follow that line of example, that is our public duty.”

“If you allow me to quote from what Honourable Dr Oko Boye said, we should show that we are not in a hurry to disclose names worthy of a headline and it is my view that such sensationalism, what is going on must stop, because they rather encourage stigmatisation.

“When you sensationlise news, you encourage stigmatisation.” the Speaker of Parliament said.

2 MPs, 13 staff have indeed tested positive for Covid-19 – Muntaka says denial is ‘a big lie’

During a television interview on Accra based Joy Prime on Wednesday morning [May 27, 2020], the Minority Chief Whip in Parliament, Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka revealed that two Parliamentarians and 13 staff in the Parliament of Ghana have so far tested positive for the coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

According to him, the infected persons were informed of their status after the Speaker of Parliament directed mass testing of all members and staff of the House last week.

The Chief Whip explained that the infected MPs and staff have been isolated while contact tracing has commenced.

His reaction followed an earlier denial on Tuesday by the Director of Public Affairs, Kate Addo that a media report of the confirmed infection in Parliament was false.

According to her, the results of Covid-19 tests conducted on personnel have not been received.

Joined by the Majority Leader and the Minister of Parliament Affairs, Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and the Resident Medical Doctor in Parliament at the press conference, she asked for a retraction of the media report of the infection which was earlier reported by Starr FM.

But Mr Muntaka in the television interview [Watch video below] described the assessment as untrue adding that it has the potential of causing fear and panic in the House.

At the Tuesday press conference, the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Majority Leader in Parliament, Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said the media report was “speculative journalism.”

They consequently asked for a retraction of the report published by Starr FM.

The media report published Tuesday, May 26, 2020 suggested that two MPs and 13 staff of the lawmaking chamber have tested positive for Covid-19 after results of voluntary testing requested by the Speaker trickled in.

It added that following the development, the Speaker has ordered for mandatory testing of all staff and MPs as a move to ensure effective contact tracing since MPs interact among themselves often.

But reacting to the publication at a press conference Tuesday afternoon [May 26, 2020], Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu denied and said the leadership of the House was not aware of anything of that sort.

“…anybody who tested positive, the information will not be transmitted to all of us. It is between the person and the people who did the test. Some confidentiality is required in these matters and we needed to be very circumspect.”

“The reason why we decided to do this, as I sit here, …if Kate [Addo – Director of Public Affairs at Parliament] has tested positive, I wouldn’t know, if the Clerk [of Parliament] has, if I [Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu] have, they wouldn’t know. So it is part of the agreement that we all came to, so nobody knows whether anybody has tested positive. The people who will know will be perhaps, those of them who did the test.”

“So just to emphasise the point that what that medium [media house] has done, amounts to nothing but speculation. They are only speculating that two Members have tested positive. Its speculative journalism. We would want to let you know that there is no truth in that.”

“…As Speaker indicated, because we are all here together, we are appealing to all staff in the House, all Members of Parliament and even non staff as you are [parliamentary media personnel] that everybody must subject himself or herself for your own sake and for the sake of your households, your friends and others that you come into contact with at work places and the various houses so that we are able to protect ourselves as a family within the prescints of Parliament.”

“So that is how it is, the agreement was that if anybody’s results came out positive, it will only be known to that person, be a staff, journalist or a Member of Parliament. I don’t know, the Clerk to Parliament doesn’t know, the Director of Public Affairs wouldn’t also know, so I will plead with you not to be engaging in such unhallowed speculative journalism.

It becomes difficult when you want to invite people to be here to submit themselves, if you go out there and be engaging in such speculations… it is not worthy to be engaging in that exercises. You may be succeeding unconsciously in repelling people, by discouraging people to submitting themselves, and yet we need these things for the survival of Parliament as an institution… so lets be circumspect,” Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said.

The Director of Public Affairs at Parliament, Kate Addo said the media report has created a situation of “panic amongst us.”

“As we sit now, this is very uncomfortable for us and it has created a lot of panic amongst us because we know what one person being infected in an environment like this means.”

“We recognise that media houses do have their sources and may have spoken to persons outside of Parliament but we also do want to state that as an institution we are very cautious .. and such reports tend to create fear and panic and we will like that the respected station will retract and come to us, we are ready to give them whatever information that we have and if they have very concrete information they will put it out so that we will have our peace of mind.”

He indicated that the stigmatization of persons who have recovered from COVID-19 will only worsen their wellbeing in society.

Mr. Nsoh cautioned the public against stigmatisation and called for the provision of psychosocial support for recovered persons.

“Let us empathise with them. Let us give them hope and encouragement and let us not run away from them and let us accept them so that we can make progress. If we begin to run away from them, what will eventually happen is that, psychologically their worth will begin to reduce. They will begin to experience low self-esteem and eventually that can affect their total wellbeing,” he added.

  • Christian Council Chairman kicks against reopening of churches

Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana, Most Rev. Paul Kwabena Boafo has registered his displeasure at the numerous calls on President Akufo-Addo to lift the ban on church activities instituted in a bid to contain the spread of the Coronavirus.

The Bishop of the Methodist Church, Ghana cannot fathom why a section of Christian religious leaders are piling pressure on the government to ease the restrictions on churches at a time that the Coronavirus infections in the country are increasing on a daily basis.

Given this, the Clergyman averred that the activities carried out in church such as singing and dancing are very conducive for the spread of the virus hence maintained that opening churches now will be a disaster for the country as far as the Coronavirus pandemic is concerned.

Quoting the scriptures in Romans chapter 13 to make his case in an interview with Accra-based Neat FM on Tuesday, May 26, 2020, Most Rev. Paul Kwabena Boafo admonished Christians in the country to obey the leadership of the nation and comply with the directives implemented in an attempt to protect everybody.

“If the churches are opened and we go and contract the disease, what next? These are the questions we should be asking ourselves,” the Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana pleaded.

He further explained that “opening churches for us to go and engage in singing and dancing which at the end will result in the spread of the virus will be an exercise in futility. So we must be obedient to the President as recorded in Romans 13 that leadership should be respected.”

“Why should churches be opened at all cost when infections are still increasing? What are we going to do there?” he quizzed.

Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has indicated that he will announce the roadmap for easing the restrictions on public gatherings later this week.

  • Patience Nyarko has a ‘demonic spirit’; we stand with Joe Mettle in prayer! – Abeiku Santana

Broadcaster, Abeiku Aggrey Santana has vehemently censured gospel singer Patience Nyarko over her recent comments about her colleague artiste Joe Mettle.

Patience Nyarko, in a radio discussion, lambasted Joe Mettle claiming he doesn’t compose his songs but has been singing Methodist and Pentecostal songs, and further said in an outburst that should the churches seize their songs, Joe Mettle will virtually be left with nothing to sing.

Joe Mettle became a target for the ”Obi Nyanime” songstress when a media personality, O.B Nartey, vouched for Joe Mettle as the Ghanaian gospel artiste to penetrate the international market.

O.B Nartey’s choice infuriated Patience Nyarko as she felt that Joe Mettle has been preferred over all gospel artistes in the country.

She stated in an interview with Halifax Ansah Addo on Okay FM’s ‘Best Entertainment’ that it is an insult to the gospel industry to place Joe Mettle as a topnotch gospel artiste with international appeal.

”What makes him number 1? Is it because he sings English songs? What qualities are you using to place him number 1? We don’t build an industry with one person. You have to respect everybody’s efforts. Joe may be good but that doesn’t mean he is the only person to represent the whole big industry like Ghana’s industry. If you to even talk about English songs, Sonnie Badu is the originator. He opened the door and you’ve disrespected him too. We have a lot of people who are doing very well.

“We have Diana Hamilton, Patience Nyarko, Ceccy Twum, Joyce Blessing and so forth. You will give us morale when you put it this way. But if you single out one person, what makes him number 1?”  she further questioned.

Although Joe Mettle hasn’t responded to the comments made by Patience Nyarko, it appears the ”Bo Noo Ni” singer has an army behind him.

According to Abeiku Santana, he least expected Patience Nyarko to attack a gospel musician focused on propagating the good news of Jesus Christ through his music.

‘Have you seen lion devouring a lion before? It’s never happened before. How can a Christian attack her fellow Christian publicly; to say that the songs he does belong to other churches and that he doesn’t compose his own songs? Who owns the Word of God? What about the Word of God? You as gospel artistes, don’t you use the Word of God in composing your songs? Does the bible belong to someone? Why should the Christian come out to attack her fellow Christian?” he questioned.

Abeiku Santana also stated emphatically that Patience Nyarko has availed herself for the devil to use her against the gospel fratenity.

“It’s purely a demonic spirit against Minister Joe Mettle but it will not survive. I’m telling you. That demonic agenda against Joe Mettle will not wash in this country. We will stand in and pray with Joe Mettle. Let the secular arts engage in their beef. We’re preaching the gospel for people to come to Christ. We’re giving hope to the hopeless,” he stressed on his ‘Drive Time’ show on Okay FM.

He warned her to stop granting interviews explaining her hostile attack on Joe Mettle.

“Patience Nyarko, stop granting interviews on the necessary titles and accolades and recognition. It’s unnecessary.”

  • Kampala gradually returns to normalcy after lockdown

Life in the Ugandan capital is slowly returning to normal after nearly two months of lockdown.

Major highways in Kampala on Tuesday experienced heavy traffic after the government partially lifted lockdown measures that barred private transport.

Pictures shared online showed cars lined bumper to bumper as early as 3 pm as drivers rushed home to beat the night curfew.

Police said several people had been arrested and their cars impounded for violating the 7:00 pm to 6:30 am curfew rules.

“We are not going to listen to traffic jam excuses, plan your travel arrangement early,” Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango told local channel NTV.

According to directives issued last week by President Yoweri Museveni, private transport was allowed to resume from May 26 and to carry a maximum of three passengers.

Public transport will resume on June 2 with buses operating at half capacity to ensure physical distancing rules are adhered to.

“This opening of public transport will not be allowed in the border districts of Uganda for another 21 days. And when the taxis resume, I don’t want to hear of brokers and these noisemakers in the park. Since it is impossible to space out the passenger and the boda boda rider, boda bodas and tuk tuks will not be allowed to carry passengers,” Museveni said last week.

Operators are also directed to provide commuters with sanitiser before boarding the vehicles. No one will be allowed on to buses without the recommended face mask.

Operators say they will increase fares as buying sanitisers and ferrying less people will increase their operating costs yet pump prices remain high.

Prior to easing the restrictions, only cargo transporters and essential service providers were allowed on the road.

Uganda as of Wednesday had recorded 253 Coronavirus cases with no deaths, according to the Ministry of Health.

  • Coronavirus: Uganda approves return of citizens stranded abroad

The Ugandan cabinet has approved the return of 2,400 nationals stranded abroad amid Coronavirus pandemic, a government official said on Tuesday.

The cabinet on Monday agreed that Ugandan nationals trapped in 66 countries can return home at their own cost, Judith Nabakooba, minister for information, communication technology and national guidance, told reporters.

“Cabinet in principle agreed that Ugandans who are stranded abroad should be allowed to return home. They are going to return in phases,” said Nabakooba.

The government is making arrangements with the UN World Food Program (WFP) to fly the stranded citizens home, said Nabakooba, adding that all the returning citizens will have to undergo a 14-day mandatory institutional quarantine.

President Yoweri Museveni last month directed Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda to study the possibility of evacuating dozens of citizens stranded abroad amid Covid-19 pandemic travel restrictions.

To contain the spread of Covid-19, the country on March 22 suspended all incoming flights, except cargo flights.

Uganda currently has 253 confirmed Coronavirus cases, with 69 recoveries, according to the Ministry of Health.

Rantjie said an assessment of the conditions on the R63 via Somerset East was being conducted, in order to provide an alternative route. More snow was falling near Graaff-Reinet around the Lootsberg Pass, SA Weather warned on Twitter.

The weather service also warned that severe frost in the northern interior of the Eastern Cape could be expected on Wednesday morning.

SA Weather Service meteorologist Lelo Kleinbooi said: “The snowfall is expected to persist until tomorrow early morning (Wednesday) over most of the high-lying areas. Thereafter, due to very cold conditions, frost can be expected over a vast area over the province’s interior for the rest of the morning. Strong winds and a chance of showers are expected along the coastal areas mainly in the morning, with the weather easing off in the afternoon.”

Kleinbooi said the weather would continue improving from Wednesday afternoon, “with the next chance of showers and rain on Friday, mainly confined over the southern and central parts as another cold will be expected to pass south”.

The weather authority also warned about heavy rainfall on Tuesday night, leading to flooding at the coastal resort town of Cape St Francis and Woody Cape between 19:20 to 10:00 on Tuesday.

This should subside by Wednesday morning, Kleinbooi said.

  • Malka Leifer: Rape-accused ex-principal fit for extradition to Australia

An Israeli woman facing 74 child sex charges in Australia is mentally fit to face extradition, a court has ruled.

Malka Leifer, the former principal of a Jewish girls’ school in Melbourne, fled to Israel in 2008 after accusations were raised against her.

Extradition hearings were delayed for two years as Ms Leifer, 54, said panic attacks prevented her coming to court.

But a Jerusalem district court judge said expert opinion was followed in ruling Ms Leifer fit for the process.

Judge Chana Lomp set 20 July 2020 as the date for a renewal of the extradition process to take the suspect back from Israel to Australia.

The case has dragged on for more than five years, damaging relations between the two countries.

Dave Sharma, Australia’s former ambassador to Israel, said in October the delay in extraditing Ms Leifer was “not only an affront to justice but deeply traumatic for the victims of this abuse”.

Ms Leifer, who was not in court on Tuesday, allegedly raped and indecently assaulted girls at the ultra-Orthodox Adass Israel School in Melbourne, Australia.

Australia attempted to extradite her between 2014 and 2016, but the attempt failed after Ms Leifer was found mentally unfit for trial.

Undercover private investigators later filmed her shopping and depositing a cheque at a bank, leading Israeli authorities to investigate and arrest her in February 2018.

In January this year, a panel of psychiatrists found that Ms Leifer was faking her mental illness to avoid extradition, paving the way for Tuesday’s decision.

In a 40-page ruling, Judge Lomp said Ms Leifer’s mental problems “were not psychotic problems of mental illness as in its legal definition”.

“My impression is that the defendant is exacerbating her mental problems and pretending to be mentally ill,” Judge Lomp wrote. “Therefore, my conclusion is that the defendant is fit to stand trial and the extradition process on her case should be renewed.”

The decision was welcomed by the former teacher’s alleged victims. One, Dassi Erlich, said the ruling was “huge”.

“This abusive woman has been exploiting the Israeli courts for six years! Intentionally creating obstacles with endless vexatious arguments that have only lengthened our ongoing trauma!”, Ms Erlich said in a statement.

One of Ms Leifer’s lawyers, Tal Gabay, however told reporters the decision was “not clean of doubt”. “It’s not a black-and-white case,” he said.

Yehuda Fried, another member of the defence team, said they hoped Israel’s supreme court would overturn the decision.

He said that some patients are afraid of seeking treatment during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic yet fever is also a symptom for malaria.

  • US says Russia sent jets to Libya ‘mercenaries’

The US military has accused Russia of sending fighter jets to Libya to support Russian mercenaries there.

There was no immediate response from the Russian Defence Ministry to the US Africa command (Africom) allegation.

Earlier this month a leaked UN report spoke of hundreds of mercenaries from the shadowy Wagner Group operating in Libya. Russia backs renegade Gen Khalifa Haftar’s army.

The country has issued a new call for a Libya ceasefire and political talks.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the conflict with an ally of Gen Haftar by phone on Tuesday, the foreign ministry said.

He told Aguila Saleh Issa, a parliament speaker, that “there needs to be a constructive dialogue involving all the Libyan political forces” and “an immediate ceasefire”.

Russia has not confirmed the presence of Wagner mercenaries in Libya. There have been many reports – though not from Russian officials – about Wagner deployments in Syria, eastern Ukraine and other hotspots, including the Central African Republic.

The Russian government denies any state involvement in the militant group.

On 18 May forces of the UN-recognised Tripoli government, fighting Gen Haftar’s army, were photographed at a captured airbase, al-Watiya, just south of the Libyan capital.

According to the UN-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA), more than 1,000 Wagner fighters fled an area south of Tripoli aboard Russian transport planes, having been pushed back by GNA troops.

That evacuation was not confirmed by Gen Haftar’s eastern-based Libyan National Army (LNA), nor by Russia.

The US Africom statement on Tuesday said: “Moscow recently deployed military fighter aircraft to Libya in order to support Russian state-sponsored private military contractors (PMCs) operating on the ground there.”

“Russian military aircraft are likely to provide close air support and offensive fires for the Wagner Group PMC that is supporting the Libyan National Army’s fight,” it said.

“The Russian fighter aircraft arrived in Libya, from an airbase in Russia, after transiting Syria where it is assessed they were repainted to camouflage their Russian origin.”

  • Coronavirus: Egypt doctors accuse government over medics’ deaths

Doctors have accused Egypt’s health ministry of negligence in its handling of Covid-19 and said it bears “full responsibility” for medics’ deaths.

A union said on Monday that 19 doctors had so far died from the disease and more than 350 others had been infected.

It blamed a lack of personal protective equipment and beds for sickened staff, and warned the system could “collapse”.

The health minister insisted sufficient protection had been offered and medics had received the “best possible care”.

Egypt, the most populous country in the Arab world, has so far reported 17,967 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and 783 associated deaths.

The doctors’ union said the deaths and infections among its members were the result of the health ministry “falling short” of doing its duty to protect them.

“The health ministry has an obligation towards doctors and all medics who are sacrificing their lives on the front lines to defend the safety of the homeland.”

“It is imperative to provide them with the necessary protection and rapid medical intervention for those who contract the disease,” it added.

With the outbreak showing no sign of abating and quarantine hospitals running at capacity, the union warned that “the health system could completely collapse, leading to a catastrophe affecting the entire country if the health ministry’s negligence and lack of action towards medical staff is not rectified”.

In response, Health Minister Hala Zayed said that since the start of the outbreak, the ministry had “ensured the allocation of a floor in every quarantine hospital with a 20-bed capacity to treat those infected among medical staff”.

Staff were tested for the coronavirus upon entering and leaving hospitals, and there were “sufficient stocks” of personal protective equipment, she added.

Ms Zayed also stated that 11 doctors had so far died, rather than 19.

The union’s warning came two days after the death of a 31-year-old doctor, Walid Yehia, who was unable to get a bed at an quarantine hospital in Cairo.

“His colleagues and I were with him, appealing for help, but there was zero response,” his brother, Ashraf Zalouk, wrote on Facebook.

Social media users contrasted Dr Yehia’s treatment to that given to the actress Ragaa al-Gadawy.

The 81-year-old was tested quickly for the virus and admitted to a quarantine hospital in the city of Ismailiya based on the personal recommendation of the health minister, news websites quoted her daughter Amira Mokhtar as saying.

Ms Zayed has reportedly ordered an investigation into the death of Dr Yehia and promised to take “all legal measures in case of any shortcomings”.

  • UCC lecturer marries his beautiful student – See pictures!

The entering of a marriage institution is very vital in the lives of many people across this continent. The African society have been holding the norms of traditional marriages since time immemorial. It is the aim of every young lady to get married to a very promising or successful man when the time comes for her to marry.

Therefore, decisions regarding marriages are very important since one ought to think through well before deciding and accepting to marry someone. In the olden days, people use to marry at a very tender age, but recently due to cultural infiltration from the Western Civilization, the average age for someone (especially) ladies to enter into marriage is now between 23-30 years.

Factors such as schooling, career accomplishments, and other life objectives come to play in determining the time one will want to marry. It is now normal for ladies to decide to marry after completing their first degree in studies.

This has been epitomized by the marriage of one University of Cape Coast Student who just completed her first degree in 2019. Miss. Florence Antwi enrolled in the UCC in 2015 where she studied Commerce with options in Accounting. But little did she know that she would meet her husband in her third year of study and there was no probability that it would even be her own lecturer.

Dr. Idun Asare, the lecturer in question here, lectured Miss Florence in Business Research Methods in her third year, and as fate would have it, they got to know themselves better and started studying themselves and hoping for a future together.

They kept their relationship to themselves and away from the students and other lecturers in the department. As a result of this, it was almost impossible for her classmates to know that she had something doing with the lecturer. A professional relationship indeed!

Miss Florence graduated in September 2019 and it was clear that anytime on wards, she would be married by her Lecturer whom she had dated for a while now. It has been almost 7 months since Miss Florence started her mandatory national service and to the surprise of her classmates, she has been married just last Friday 22nd May, 2020 by Dr. Idun Asare.

However, due to the current social distancing measures implemented by the government, they only had their traditional marriage privately and would be having their white wedding any time soon when these restrictions have been eased.

The is some of the unusual things to happen to anyone but University they say, is a universal world!

  • JK Rowling to publish fairy tale free for lockdown children

The creator of the “Harry Potter” books JK Rowling said on Tuesday she would release a free online serialisation of a bed-time story she wrote for her children 10 years ago.

The superstar British writer said she decided to pull “The Ickabog” story “down from the attic” and publish it for children forced to stay at home during the coronavirus lockdown.

“My now teenagers were touchingly enthusiastic, so downstairs came the very dusty box, and for the last few weeks I’ve been immersed in a fictional world I thought I’d never enter again,” she said in a statement.

Rowling said she would post the first two chapters on a dedicated website – www.theickabog.com – on Tuesday, with 34 further instalments released each weekday until July 10.

She then intends to publish the story in English in November and other languages later on. All royalties will be given to projects assisting groups particularly affected by the pandemic.

Written to be read aloud, “The Ickabog” is a story “in the fairy tale tradition” set in an imaginary land and aimed primarily at children aged between seven and nine.

It is unrelated to any of Rowling’s other previous works, though she noted it was penned “in fits and starts” between her “Harry Potter” books.

“‘The Ickabog’ is a story about truth and the abuse of power,” she said, adding it was not “intended to be read as a response to anything that’s happening in the world right now”.

“The themes are timeless and could apply to any era or any country,” she said.

The author is inviting budding young artists inspired by its “host of colourful characters and fast-paced plot” to illustrate the story and enter their artworks into a global competition being run by her publishers.

The winners will have their drawings included in the published book in their part of the world.

“Having decided to publish, I thought how wonderful it would be if children in lockdown, or otherwise needing distraction during the strange and difficult time we’re passing through, illustrated the story for me,” she said.

Rowling added she wanted to see “imaginations run wild”.

“Creativity, inventiveness and effort are the most important things: we aren’t necessarily looking for the most technical skill!” she said.

  • GFA boss insists he is on good terms with predecessor Kwesi Nyantakyi

Ghana Football Association president Kurt Okraku has dispelled rumours of a strained relationship with his predecessor Kwesi Nyantakyi.

Okraku has been accused of neglecting the banned former Ghana FA president who helped him to win last year’s hotly contested elections.

According to reports, Nyantakyi helped canvass for votes from delegates to defeat his out-of-love former vice-president George Afriyie.

Okraku has been quick been quick to water down reports of an acrimonious relationship with Nyantakyi who is fighting a lifetime ban at CAS.

”I have never had a bad relationship with former president [Kwesi] Nyantakyi in fact from Nana Sam Brew Butler when Nana was the FA chairman, I was a practising journalist,” Okraku told Starrfmonline.

”I have got a relationship with him, Alhaji Lepowura MND Jawula, Kwesi Nyantakyi, Kofi Amoah and I have never had a bad relationship with the leaders of this Association and I feel good about this.

  • Costa Rica celebrates first same-sex weddings

The first same-sex weddings have taken place in Costa Rica, the first Central American country to equalize its marriage legislation.

A lesbian couple became the first to tie the knot in a ceremony that took place just after the new law came into effect at midnight.

The wedding was shown on national TV.

President Carlos Alvarado said the law change meant Costa Rica now recognised the rights lesbian and gay people had always deserved.

He tweeted (in Spanish) that “empathy and love should from now on be the guiding principles which will allow us to move forward and build a country where there is room for everyone”.

The first same-sex marriage ceremony was broadcast as the culmination of a three-hour programme celebrating marriage equality.

Marriage equality came about after the constitutional court declared in August 2018 that a ban on same-sex weddings was unconstitutional and discriminatory.

The court gave Costa Rica’s parliament 18 months to change the law.

Enrique Sánchez, Costa Rica’s first openly gay member of parliament, welcomed the change and praised those who had spent years lobbying for the same-sex marriage ban to be lifted.

  • Dominic Cummings: Minister Douglas Ross quits over senior aide’s lockdown actions

Junior minister Douglas Ross has resigned after Dominic Cummings’ defense of his trip to County Durham during the coronavirus lockdown.

The Scotland Office minister said the senior aide’s view of the government guidance was “not shared by the vast majority of people”.

Mr Cummings has explained why he drove 260 miles in March from his home to his parents’ farm with his wife and child.

No 10 said the prime minister regretted Mr Ross’ decision to stand down.

In a statement announcing his resignation, Mr. Ross, who remains Tory MP for Moray, said: “While the intentions may have been well-meaning, the reaction to this news shows that Mr Cummings interpretation of the government advice was not shared by the vast majority of people who have done as the government asked.”

“I have constituents who didn’t get to say goodbye to loved ones; families who could not mourn together; people who didn’t visit sick relatives because they followed the guidance of the government.

“I cannot in good faith tell them they were all wrong and one senior adviser to the government was right.”

A No 10 spokesman said: “The prime minister would like to thank Douglas Ross for his service to government and regrets his decision to stand down as parliamentary undersecretary of state for Scotland.”

Mr Cummings has faced calls to resign after it emerged he had driven his child and ill wife from London to County Durham during lockdown.

At a news conference in the garden of 10 Downing Street on Monday afternoon, he said he did not regret his actions. and believed he acted reasonably and legally.

On the subject of why he then drove his family to the town of Barnard Castle – 15 days after he had displayed symptoms – Mr Cummings said he was testing his eyesight to see if he could make the trip back down to London. He explained that he had experienced some eyesight problems during his illness.

Douglas Ross backed Boris Johnson to be Tory leader and is not one of those in the party seen as hostile to his style of government.

So this resignation is a blow – and could point to wider discontent.

There is a Scottish subplot – the Scottish Tories have been accused of hypocrisy for demanding Scotland’s chief medical officer resign then staying quiet about Dominic Cummings.

Mr Ross’s reasons for resigning are scathing.

He says he cannot tell his constituents in good faith that they were wrong to miss funerals and other family events, but Mr Cummings was right.

He says he has listened to his constituents and resigned. The question now is whether other Tory MPs are continuing to get the same feedback.

Labour’s shadow Scottish Secretary Ian Murray said Mr Ross had done the “decent thing” by resigning.

“He understands that it’s not acceptable to have one rule for Boris Johnson’s closest adviser, another for everybody else,” he said.

The SNP’s Westminster leader Ian Blackford said he respected Mr Ross for taking the “difficult decision” to resign and called for Mr Cummings to be removed from his post “without further delay”.

“This issue transcends politics. It is about protecting trust and confidence in the public health advice,” he said in a tweet.

Opposition MPs are meeting to discuss their next steps in deciding how to hold Boris Johnson and his senior aide to account.

  • Major markets in STMA to be closed down

The Leadership of the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) have resolved to close all major markets within the Metropolis as a preventive measure to halt the spread of the COVID-19 in the Metropolis.

The closure would begin on Thursday, May 28, and end on Wednesday, June 3, 2020.

Mr. John Laste, Public Relations Officer of STMA, said the decision had become necessary since many of the market traders were gradually derailing the gains in social distancing.

The Assembly, created some satellite markets at the Jubilee Park in Takoradi and Ekuasi in Sekondi to avoid overcrowding of both traders and buyers but traders have blatantly flouted the vision for the creation of these satellite markets, thereby, necessitating the one-week closure.

He said, the assembly was still in consultation to see whether a shift system could also be adopted when the one week ban elapsed.

The affected Markets would include; Takoradi Market Circle, Jubilee Park, Sekondi Market, Effiakuma No. 9 Market, Essikado Market, and Kojokrom Market.

All drinking bars within the STMA and Effia Kwesimintsim Municipality would also be closed in the period under consideration.

Already, the Joint Taskforce of the two assemblies has arrested some recalcitrant bar operators and are preparing them for the appropriate sanctions.

Mr. James Obeng Jnr., Metropolitan NADMO Boss said the exercise was to ensure that operators did not create an unnecessary crowd and somewhat spread of the deadly virus.

The Western Region has been described as the current hotspot, overtaking Ashanti Region with cases accumulating to 206.

  • Medical staff are the ‘special ones’ – Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes the protocols he and his players must follow for football to return are a small sacrifice compared to those risking their lives on the frontline of the coronavirus crisis.

Guardiola’s mother died at the age of 82 in April after contracting COVID-19.

“We follow the rules, the protocol. We have to. That’s the most important thing. We don’t do anything special,” Guardiola told the City website.

“The special ones are the doctors, nurses, scientists, cleaners – they put their own lives at risk to save ours.

“When it’s a special situation around the world, you have to adapt.”

Premier League players returned to training last week, whilst maintaining social distancing guidelines.

The UK government has now given the green light for contact training to resume, with clubs set to vote on the protocols on Wednesday.

Should the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League all be completed, City could face 17 games in little over two months once the action gets underway.

But Guardiola is pleased with the fitness of his players given they have not played competitively since March 8.

“I think they were looking forward to coming back and to train again and do what they like,” he added. “They came back perfectly.”

Even when football does return in England, matches are set to be behind closed doors for the forseeable future.

Fears have been raised over the possibility that fans could congregate around stadiums, but there has been little evidence of such problems in Germany since the return of the Bundesliga.

And Guardiola encouraged fans to continue adhering to the health and safety guidelines.

“We want to come back but now the priority is other things. It’s still stay safe, be careful and when everything is possible we will come back,” he said.

“The most important thing is to follow the instructions. If they say use a mask, stay at home, social distance, we have to do it. Because there are many, many people in the NHS (National Health Service) around the world who put their own lives at risk to save ours.

“It’s incredible what they have done, and we have to follow them. Now, we cannot do anything wrong.”

  • Coronavirus: Avoid indiscriminate spitting in public – Health expert warns

To stop the spread of the coronavirus, the Eastern Regional Health Promotion Officer, Mrs. Bridget Anim, has urged Ghanaians to steer clear of each other when they leave their homes.

She cautioned Ghanaians against indiscriminate coughing and spitting in public because Coronavirus spreads through droplets therefore sputum from an infected person could easily be transmitted to others around.

She that coughing should be done into the elbow away from people if a person is hard-pressed for a cough.

Speaking to the media at Aburi in the Eastern region on gate-keeping roles amidst COVID-19, Mrs. Anim said it is important to guard against stigmatization of Coronavirus patients and hoped that a vaccine would be found soon to keep COVID -19 at bay.

She added that concerted efforts were required from all stakeholders to make the country alert, respond positively, and to forestall any possible outbreak of the deadly- flu-like virus.

  • Coronavirus: Ghana to decide on Hydroxychloroquine usage

The Ghana Health Service on Tuesday announced that the COVID-19 case Management Team will meet to decide on steps to take after the World Health Organisation suspended the use of Hydoxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 on safety grounds.

Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, the Director General of the Ghana Health Service, said a communique would be issued in due course to that effect.

The Director General made this known during the questions and answers section at a media briefing to provide situational update on COVID-19 case management in the country.

He said the drug was only used for critical cases and not for routine ones.

He said cases that were being managed from home do not take this medicine.

“So we are waiting for the meeting to end to know the outcome and we will decide on what next to do,” he said.

The WHO suspended the study of Hydroxychloroquine as COVID-19 treatment to review safety concerns due to report of higher death risks.

The WHO, on Monday, temporarily dropped hydroxychloroquine — the anti-malarial drug – saying that its experts needed to review all available evidence to date.

In a press briefing, the WHO Director-General, Mr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said a paper published last week in the Lancet showed that people taking hydroxychloroquine were at higher risk of death and heart problems.

“There would be a temporary pause on the hydroxychloroquine arm of its global clinical trial,” he said.

  • Tema environmental health officers appeal for intensification of corona virus education

Environmental health officers of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) have appealed to government to intensify education on the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure that Ghana curbs its spread.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, they said they need for more intensified education could not be overemphasized as some citizens still did not believe that the virus was real.

Mr Benjamin Kwame Opare, an Environmental Health Officer, said the education on the disease must be well structured to capture the attention of all citizens and residents.

He observed that many people who might have had a piece of information on the virus but did not fully appreciate it, leading to their refusal to comply with the various preventive protocols.

He said it was not enough to play jingles on radio and television or use information vans without assessing the impact of the messaging adding that “the alarming rate at which the information on the ground outweighs awareness creation is a cause for worry”

Mr Opare, who is also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Benemef Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organization, reiterated the need for government and other stakeholders to cause a behavioural change among the public through intensive education.

He stated for instance that even though commercial vehicles has been directed to reduce the number of passengers they carried, their vehicles could still be a source of spread of the diseases and therefore the need for passengers to receive proper education on how to prevent contracting the disease in public transport.

He explained that critical attention must be paid to the seats in commercial vehicles as some passengers touch the surfaces and back of the seats to either board or alight and unknowingly touch their faces.

He added that on several occasions, the commercial vehicle conductors “mates” also use their lips to hold the notes when collecting the fares and afterwards issue those monies to passengers as change, a situation he said could transfer the virus to unsuspecting persons.

He said there was the need to support and engage Environmental Health officers in the fight against COVID-19 in the various communities as their work involved interacting with residents in their residents.

Mr Joshua Manab, Assistant Chief Environmental Officer at TMA, on his part reminded residents that the COVID-19 was real and close to 7,000 people had been infected in Ghana and therefore reiterated the need for proper hand washing, wearing of mask and adhering to the various protocols.

Mr Manab said it was unfortunate that some Ghanaians claimed God was bigger than the virus therefore they would not comply with the COVID-19 protocols saying “yes God is bigger than the disease but this same God gives instructions for mankind to follow to preserve their lives”.

He reminded the public that even though it was part of the Ghanaian culture to shake hands, they should consciously avoid it in this time of the COVID-19 and rather resort to other means of greeting.

  • Sliding scale in behaviour of the coronavirus – Dr Badu Sarkodie

Dr Badu Sarkodie, the Director of Public Health, Ghana Health Service (GHS), on Tuesday said there is a sliding scale in the behaviour of the COVID-19 record of the country.

He said records showed that children below ten years who got infected were able to clear the virus more rapidly, and that those between ages ten to 40 recovered much earlier.

Dr Sarkodie, who was speaking at the Minister’s COVID-19 update press briefing in Accra, said although the country continued to record some new cases of COVID-19, the infection, hospitalisation, as well as death rate had slowed down compared to the previous recordings.

The press briefing would provide the clarity needed on the dynamics of the virus to inform both the Government and stakeholders in their consultations towards the easing of the COVID-19 restrictions.

He presented a chat, which showed that unlike records of other countries, the commonest symptoms of patients in Ghana were coughs, which formed close to 30 per cent of the cases recorded, with a fever rate of about 10 per cent.

He said the infection had varied presentations starting in some cases from a mild mode to severe, resembling any acute respiratory infection, but most people in Ghana had within two weeks completed the viral shedding and had fully recovered.

In extreme cases where hospitalisation was required, patients had recovered by the eighth week with children and pregnant women accounting for a small proportion with mild symptoms.

On the mode of infection, Dr Sarkodie explained that the SARS-2 germ (COVID-19), was similar to those that caused other respiratory illnesses, which attacked the protein cell and penetrated the human body cells in an attempt to replicate itself.

However, to build immunity to the novel Coronavirus, the body develops several counter cells, which rather leads to massive damages to cells of delicate body organs like the lungs, kidneys and heart.

That, he said, often accounted for the critical symptoms of persistent cough, sneezing, high temperature, and difficulty in breathing in some patients, particularly the aged and those with critical diseases of these organs, leading to their functional failure.

He said although all persons were susceptible to the novel Coronavirus, those with high Blood Pressure (BP or hypertension), diabetes and heart problems, were at a higher risk of becoming critically ill and even dying, because it was the same protein cells that helped regulate their BP.

“This explains the term comorbidity as has been often used to describe deaths associated with COVID-19,” he said.

Dr Sarkodie said in Ghana only about nine per cent of people who were infected with COVID-19 had developed symptoms but 91 per cent had been asymptomatic (without symptoms).

He, however, stated that some of the risk factors of contracting the virus depended on how often one touched his or her eyes, nose or mouth with contaminated hands.

He advised that the frequent cleansing of objects such as doorknobs and surfaces of tables while avoiding the sharing of items such as pens could greatly reduce the rate of infection.

“This is why all must strictly adhere to the WHO safety and hygiene protocols, which includes physical distancing, regular handwashing with soap underwater for at least 20 seconds, or use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers and the wearing of nose masks are critical,” Dr Sarkodie said.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s cumulative COVID-19 case count now stands at 6,964 as at May 26, 2020, with 2,097 recoveries and 32 deaths.

  • COCOBOD, Government team up to fix Eastern corridor road

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) is teaming up with the Government to fix sections of the Eastern Corridor road, Mr Joseph Boahen Aidoo, Chief Executive of COCOBOD said on Tuesday.

He said all technicalities had been resolved and contractors on-site to fix the Have to Hohoe and Hohoe to Jasikan stretches of the Corridor.

Mr Aidoo said this when he interacted with journalists in Ho as part of his three-day working visit to farms, farmers, and project sites of COCOBOD in the Volta and Oti regions.

He said the road projects, being done under co-financing, would be completed between two to three years to give relief to cocoa farmers.

“These roads are dear to the government and our farmers. Without good roads, the government’s interventions and supports can’t reach farmers and we also can’t transport cocoa beans from the farms to Tema Habour. So we need the roads badly and they will soon be fixed,” Mr Aidoo said.

He commended the Volta Regional Security Council (REGSEC) for efforts at reducing the smuggling of Ghana’s cocoa to the neighbouring republic of Togo.

Mr Aidoo said the Council intercepted over 600 bags of cocoa being smuggled to Togo between 2019 and this year and urged it to “continue the noble duty.”

He said the Board of Directors of COCOBOD had approved a compensation package of two-thirds of the value of proceeds gotten from seized cocoa beans to security agencies and officers involved in interceptions to motivate them.

“Every tonne of cocoa that leaves our country illegally costs us four hundred dollars so we have to do this to protect our cocoa and our economy,” Mr Aidoo stated.

He said a total of 3.6 million hybrid cocoa seedlings had been raised for 3,000 hectares of cocoa land areas to be rehabilitated in the region.

Mr Aidoo said in the short term, COCOBOD had introduced hand pollination and scaled up mass pruning to enhance flowering and asked farmers to take advantage of the interventions.

He said COCOBOD, through Government was also spending between 200 and 300 million dollars to tackle diseases and overaged cocoa farms and called for support of all.

Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, Volta Regional Minister said the Region remained a key player in the cocoa sector and stated the readiness of REGSEC to stop the smuggling of cocoa across the borders.

Mr Wisdom Delali Amexame, Regional Manager responsible for intelligence and security, COCOBOD, told the GNA that Volta and Oti regions produced averagely 8000 tonnes of cocoa annually in three cocoa growing districts.

  • Parliament reacts to Starr FM report on MPs coronavirus test

Parliament on Tuesday reacted to a report attributed to a radio station in Accra that two Members of Parliament and 13 staff have tested positive for COVID-19 following a voluntary test organised by the House last week.

According to the report, which has reportedly gone viral on social media, the identities of the persons affected were yet to be disclosed.

However, Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, in reaction to the story, told journalists that he had no such information.

“Little did I know that one media house has set Ghana on fire by relating to the story.”

He said the agreement was that when someone tested positive for the disease, the information would not be transmitted to any Member of Parliament except the one who was tested.

The Majority Leader said some confidentiality was required, and “we needed to be very circumspect.”

“… So, nobody knows whether anybody has tested positive. The people who know would be perhaps those who did the test.”

He said what that medium had done amounted to speculation and there was not truth in it.

Mr Kyei Mensah-Bonsu said it was in the best interest of all MPs, members and non-members of staff to subject themselves to the test for the sake of their families, friends and the people they came into contact with.

He advised against what he called “unhallowed speculative journalism,” adding that it became difficult for people to go for the test when such reports make the rounds.

Dr Prince Pambo, the Director of Medical Services in Parliament, described the test as a “good thing” but “beyond offering the platform for samples to be taken, to whichever lab to run, we in Parliament do not have any control over that anymore.”

“What simply happened… to the release of results is simply between the individual and the testing centres….”

He said Parliament as an institution did not play role.

However, after testing, people with medical conditions other than covid-19, be it malaria, typhoid or cancer, were told what to do.

Ms Kate Addo, the Acting Director of Public Affairs of Parliament, indicated that such reports tended to create panic and fear.

She said the House had not received any information from the testing centre on the COVID-19 status on any MP or staff of the House.

Ms Addo said the results of the test were going to be confidential and all who tested positive would be contacted by the National Response Team to follow up with the necessary protocols.

Meanwhile, Speaker Aaron Mike Oquaye has announced that the team had been recalled to conduct the test on Thursday and Friday for those who did not take part to do so, before sanctions began to apply.
