  • Hong Kong security bill backed by China’s parliament

China’s parliament has backed a new security law for Hong Kong which would make it a crime to undermine Beijing’s authority in the territory.

The bill – which now passes to China’s senior leadership – has caused deep concern among those who say it could end Hong Kong’s unique status.

It could also see China installing its own security agencies in the region for the first time.

The move has already sparked a new wave of anti-mainland protest.

Clashes broke out on Wednesday as Hong Kong’s parliament debated a different proposed law, which would make it a crime to disrespect the Chinese national anthem. Hundreds of people were arrested in protests over that and the security law.

Security remains high on Thursday, as a tense debate in the Legislative Council continues.

At least two pro-democracy legislators were ejected from the council on Thursday. One lawmaker, Ted Hui, threw rotten plants on to the floor of the chamber, saying it symbolised the decay of Hong Kong’s political system.

“I want the speaker to feel what is meant by rotten,” he said.

The speaker deemed the package to be an “unknown dangerous object”, and called police and fire crews.

    What has the reaction been?

Full details about exactly what behaviour will be outlawed under the new law are not yet clear. It is due to be enacted before September.

But hours before the bill was passed, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said developments in Hong Kong meant it could no longer be considered to have “a high degree of autonomy” from mainland China.

That meant that Hong Kong no longer merited being treated differently from the mainland under US law.

The declaration could have major implications for Hong Kong’s trade hub status and is likely to anger Beijing.

    What happens next?

The National People’s Congress (NPC) – meeting in Beijing after a two-month delay caused by the coronavirus pandemic – backed the security bill resolution with 2,878 votes in favour, one against and six abstentions.

“It will uphold and improve the ‘one country, two systems’ policy,” NPC chairman Li Zhanshu told delegates during the closing ceremony.

“It is in line with the constitution and Hong Kong’s Basic Law and is in the interest of all Chinese people including Hong Kong people,” he added.

The NPC only ever approves legislation put to it by the government so there was no chance the bill would not be supported.

The bill – referred to as the Draft Decision – now passes to the Standing Committee of the Communist Party which will draw up the full details of the new law.

    It is expected to criminalise:

-secession – breaking away from the country

-subversion – undermining the power or authority of the central government

-terrorism – using violence or intimidation against people

-activities by foreign forces that interfere in Hong Kong

The bill also says that “when needed, relevant national security organs of the Central People’s Government will set up agencies in Hong Kong to fulfil relevant duties to safeguard national security in accordance with the law”.

That means China could potentially have its own law enforcement agencies in Hong Kong, alongside the city’s own.

The authorities in Hong Kong insist the law is essential to tackle growing violence and “terrorism”, and that the territory’s residents have nothing to fear from it.

Critics fear it could lead to Hong Kongers being prosecuted – even retroactively – for criticising their or the mainland’s leadership, joining protests or exercising their current rights under local laws.

Why did China do this? Hong Kong was handed back to China from British control in 1997, but under a unique agreement – a mini-constitution called the Basic Law and a so-called “one country, two systems” principle.

They are supposed to protect certain freedoms for Hong Kong: freedom of assembly and speech, an independent judiciary and some democratic rights – freedoms that no other part of mainland China has.

Under the same agreement, Hong Kong had to enact its own national security law – this was set out in Article 23 of the Basic Law.

But its unpopularity meant it had never been done – the government tried in 2003 but had to back down after protests.

Then, last year, protests over an extradition law turned violent and evolved into a broader anti-China and pro-democracy movement.

China is keen to avoid a repeat of that unrest.

  • Premier League clubs vote to resume contact training

Premier League clubs voted unanimously on Wednesday to resume contact training as the English top-flight took a significant step towards a possible restart in June.

The Premier League was put on hold in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, with Liverpool agonisingly close to the title.

Clubs returned to training in small and socially distanced groups last week but they have now moved to stage two of the “return to training protocol”.

“Premier League shareholders today voted unanimously to resume contact training, marking another step towards restarting the Premier League season, when safe to do so,” the league said in a statement.

“Squads are now able to train as a group and engage in tackling while minimising any unnecessary close contact.”

It added: “Discussions are ongoing as work continues towards resuming the season, when conditions allow.”

The small number of positive tests from the first two rounds of testing at Premier League clubs has raised hopes of a return next month.

Eight cases of coronavirus among players and staff have been detected from 1,744 tests in the Premier League.

In the second-tier Championship, just two positive tests were registered from 1,014 tests.

A targeted return date of June 12 was described by Premier League chief executive Richard Masters last week as a “staging post”.

Players and coaches have argued they will need until at least the end of June to reduce the risk of injuries after such a long lay-off.

Some players have voiced fears over their safety and that of their families due to the virus.

Watford captain Troy Deeney has not returned to training after three positive cases were registered by the Hornets over concerns he could spread the virus to his five-month-old son.

French World Cup winner N’Golo Kante has also been given permission by Chelsea to train at home.

Germany’s Bundesliga has already managed to complete two rounds of fixtures since returning behind closed doors and there has been little player opposition to La Liga’s plans to return in Spain from June 11.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson said playing at an empty Anfield and winning the Premier League title with no fans present would be “pretty strange”.

Liverpool were 25 points clear of 2019 champions Manchester City when the league was shut down, on the verge of being crowned English champions for the first time in 30 years.

“Of course it would feel different because if you win any trophy and receive it without any fans there, it would be pretty strange,” he told the BBC.

“We still have work to do and we still need to perform at a high level right the way until the season finishes because we want to finish as strongly as we can to make sure it is a full season,” he added.

  • Hydroxychloroquine is no longer authorized to treat coronavirus in France

The French government on Wednesday repealed the regulations authorizing the prescription of hydroxychloroquine against Covid-19 in hospitals in France, following an unfavorable opinion from the High council for public health, according to a decree in the Official Journal, reports the Sputnik news agency, citing AFP.

Since the end of March, hydroxychloroquine – a drug derived from the anti-malarial drug chloroquine – could be prescribed as an exception to the hospital and only for severely ill patients, on the collective decision of the doctors.

WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced Monday that tests for hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine in the fight against Covid-19 have been temporarily suspended by the organization.

He noted that these drugs were still considered to be safe for patients with autoimmune diseases and malaria.

According to Sputnik, the Medicines Agency also said Tuesday, “wishing to suspend” clinical trials with this molecule in France, following the decision of the WHO. The High Council of Public Health has also recommended limiting its use.

For his part, Didier Raoult, who defends the use of hydroxychloroquine in the treatment of the disease, condemned recent studies, skeptical about its effectiveness, declaring that they were based on a “big data badly controlled”.

  • Ashaiman police being tested for Covid-19 after inmates test positive

Officers at the Ashaiman Police command are undergoing tests after 11 more inmates tested positive for Covid-19.

Two weeks ago, 54 inmates were randomly tested by health officials at the Ashaiman cells and 10 of which proved positive.

The new numbers bring the tally of positive cases to 21.

The inmates have been isolated at a facility at Twibleo also in the Ashaiman area.

Following the developments, the Authorities have taken measures to avert further spread.

Authorities say they are still awaiting the results of 33 persons tested.

The situation has forced authorities to take action before the virus spreads to all officials.

In doing so, officials have stopped admitting new inmates to the Ashaiman cells.

Instead, they are dispatching incoming suspects to three new cells at different locations at Community 22, Ashaiman North and Middle East.

  • Trump to ‘sign executive order about social media’

US President Donald Trump will sign an executive order targeting social media firms, the White House has said.

It comes after he threatened to shut down social media platforms he accused of stifling conservative voices.

The latest dispute emerged after Twitter added fact-check links to his tweets for the first time.

The order’s details have not been shared and it is unclear what regulatory steps the president can take without new laws passed by Congress.

White House officials gave no further information on what is expected in the executive order which is set to be signed on Thursday.

Before leaving Washington for Florida to watch a space launch that was postponed due to bad weather, Mr Trump again accused Twitter and other social media of bias, without offering evidence.

Mr Trump also continued his criticism of social media platforms on Twitter, ending a tweet with: “Now they are going absolutely CRAZY. Stay Tuned!!!”

The long-running dispute between Mr Trump and social media companies flared up again on Tuesday when one of his posts was given a fact-check label by Twitter for the first time.

He had tweeted, without providing evidence: “There is NO WAY (ZERO!) that Mail-In Ballots will be anything less than substantially fraudulent.”

Twitter added a warning label to the post and linked to a page that described the claims as “unsubstantiated”.

On Wednesday Mr Trump threatened to “strongly regulate” or even “close down” social media platforms.

He tweeted to his more than 80 million followers that Republicans felt the platforms “totally silence conservatives” and that he would not allow this to happen. In an earlier tweet, he said that Twitter was “completely stifling free speech”.

Twitter’s chief executive Jack Dorsey responded to criticism of the platform’s fact-checking policies in a series of posts, saying: “We’ll continue to point out incorrect or disputed information about elections globally.”

Mr Trump wrote a similar post on Facebook about mail-in ballots on Tuesday, and no such warnings were applied.

In an interview with Fox News on Wednesday, Facebook’s chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said censoring a social media platform would not be the “right reflex” for a government concerned about censorship. Fox said it would play its full interview with Mr Zuckerberg on Thursday.

Twitter has tightened its policies in recent years as it faced criticism that its hands-off approach was helping fake accounts and misinformation to thrive.

Some of America’s biggest technology companies have also been accused of anti-competitive practices and violating their users’ privacy. Apple, Google, Facebook and Amazon face antitrust probes by federal and state authorities and a US congressional panel.

Shares in both Twitter and Facebook fell in Wednesday’s trading session in New York.

Facebook, Twitter and Google did not immediately reply to requests from the BBC for comment.

The government has not commented on the escape.

Photos of the deserted and littered stadium were shared on Twitter:

  • George Floyd: Minnesota clashes over death in police custody

There have been clashes between police and protesters in Minneapolis after the death on Monday of an unarmed black man in police custody in the US city.

Police fired tear gas and protesters threw rocks and sprayed graffiti on police cars.

Video of the death shows George Floyd, 46, groaning “I can’t breathe” as a white policeman kneels on his neck.

Four police officers have been fired, with the mayor saying that being black “should not be a death sentence”.

Mayor Jacob Frey also called on prosecutors to file criminal charges against the policeman who was filmed holding Mr Floyd.

The incident echoes the case of Eric Garner, who was placed in a police chokehold in New York in 2014. His death became a rallying call against police brutality and was a driving force in the Black Lives Matter movement.

    What happened at the protests?

They began in the afternoon on Tuesday, when hundreds of people came to the intersection where the incident had taken place on Monday evening.

Organisers tried to keep the protest peaceful and maintain coronavirus social distancing, with demonstrators chanting “I can’t breathe,” and “It could’ve been me”.

Protester Anita Murray told the Washington Post: “It’s scary to come down here in the middle of the pandemic, but how could I stay away?”

A crowd of hundreds later marched to the 3rd Precinct, where the officers involved in the death are thought to have worked.

Squad cars were sprayed with graffiti and protesters threw stones at the police building. Police fired tear gas, flash grenades and foam projectiles.

One protester told CBS: “It’s real ugly. The police have to understand that this is the climate they have created.”

Another said: “I got on my knees and I put up a peace sign and they tear-gassed me.”

Police said one person had suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being shot away from the protest area but gave no further details.

    What happened to George Floyd?

Officers responding to reports of the use of counterfeit money had approached Mr Floyd in his vehicle.

According to police he was told to step away from the vehicle and physically resisted officers.

A police statement said: “Officers were able to get the suspect into handcuffs and noted he appeared to be suffering medical distress.”

The video taken at the scene does not show how the confrontation started.

It shows a white officer using his knee to pin Mr Floyd to the ground by the neck.

The administration has however denied the reports, according to an announcement carried on local media.

State official Mwita Waitara had last week said students can report back to school with ginger and lemons to try and prevent catching the virus.

Tanzania’s President John Magufuli earlier in the month said his son had recovered from Covid-19 after inhaling steam and consuming ginger and lemons.

Schools are reopening on 1 June for all final year students and the government has issued guidelines that include handwashing and rearranging classes to ensure space between students.

Former Asante Kotoko player and Board Member George Kennedy has shed light on the signing of striker Emmanuel Clottey by the Porcupines five years ago.

Clottey’s signing sparked a protracted legal tussle between the Porcupine Warriors and Esperance Sportive de Tunis which ended this year.

Different accounts were given about how the player was signed and the then Asante Kotoko management has been blamed for causing financial loss to the club.

“Emmanuel Clottey had problems in his stint with Esperance and during his loan spell in Dubai. Clottey appealed to Alhaji Lamin that he had return home (Ghana) after his club (Esperance) failed to give him a return ticket,”

“He was not receiving his salaries from his parent club (Esperance) nor from the club, he was playing on loan in Dubai,”

He continued: “Based on that, he discussed with Alhaji Lamin he had the chance to quit the club (Esperance). Alhaji Lamin brought Clottey to Kumasi afterward,”

“I told the management I knew Clottey based on his playing days at Berekum Chelsea but cannot say much about him on his then-current form,”George Kennedy told Kumasi based Fox FM.

  • Africa calls for enhanced public-private cooperation on climate change

Two leaders in Africa’s climate change adaptation industry have called for more government and private sector partnerships in order to build self-funding business models of enabling the continent to reduce the effects of climate change.

Speaking on a webinar from Nairobi, Edward Mungai, chief executive officer of the Kenya Climate Innovation Center, said unlike governments, private sector will be able to build businesses that generate revenue from activities that reduce the effects of climate change.

“We need to disseminate more information to people across the continent so that they can understand what is climate change and the arising business opportunities they can take advantage of,” Mungai said.

Dan Asare-Kyei, chief executive officer of Esoko in Ghana, who provides digital information and financial access services to farmers, said businesses arising from climate adaptation include providing improved seeds to farmers, providing mini-drip irrigation systems and cottage food processing.

Other opportunities include agriculture micro-insurance, solar mini-grids, and weather forecast information.

Asare-Kyei said what is need is governments in Africa to develop public-private-partnerships so that the projects implemented to caution people from the effects of climate change can then be developed to long lasting business models.

They said organizations that are helping micro and small businesses develop their climate resilience and adaptation ideas require funding to prepare these businesses to move to a stage where they can get semi-commercial loans and then full commercial loans.

“Through the public-private-partnerships, money coming through the government for climate change would be used to develop a self-sustaining project,” Asare-Kyei said.

Ramaphosa also confirmed that the country will ease the current lockdown from level four to level three on June 1, and restrictions on congregational worship will be loosened in a carefully measured way.

The level-three lockdown will allow 8 million people to return to work with the resumption of most sectors of the economy, following strict health protocols and social distancing rules.

Places of worship may reopen subject to strict restrictions, Ramaphosa said, adding that social distancing will have to be observed and all worshippers and participants will have to wear face masks in line with the current regulations.

  • How EC will embark on new voter registration exercise in 5 clusters [VIDEO]

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that it will embark on the new voters’ registration exercise in five clusters.

The Director of Electoral Services at the EC, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe told Graphic Online that the exact date for the registration exercise would be announced later but it is expected to start in the last week of June 2020.

He said the commission has planned to use 38 days for the entire exercise and that it was targetting between 16million and 16.5million people to register.

About 8500 BVRs are expected to be used for the exercise.

“This time around we are using five registration centres per a cluster. So assuming you have 15 polling stations, you divide the 15 by five, so that you have 10 clusters. And each cluster will form one registration team and each team will be made up of two registration officers, two data entry clerks, one registration officer special duties, he will be in charge of commuting between the team and the district office as well as exporting data and the rest, then we will have the laminator,” Dr Quaicoe said.

“So each phase for the five,… will last for six days. So what it means is that the registration officers will go to the first phase of the five polling station centre in that cluster. So when they go to the first cluster, they will be there for six days, and when they are there for six days, on the 7th day, they will rest due to the rush and interaction and then they will move to the next registration centre in the second phase for another six days and one day to retool and then they will go to the third phase…,” he added.

Dr Quacoe explained [Watch the video below] that there will be three days for a mop-up after the exercise.

Graphic Online understands that at Wednesday’s IPAC meeting, the EC said all was set for the deployment of the new biometric voter registration technology which will lead to the compilation of the new voters’ register.

In line with the requirements of the law, political parties will be informed of the exact date not later than 21 days before the start of the exercise after the Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) which is currently before Parliament matures.

  • FDA destroys all 692 boxes COA FS recalled from the market

Hundreds of boxes of COA FS, which were recently recalled from the market, have been destroyed by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in Cape Coast.

According to the Daily Graphic, 640 boxes of the 500ml dosage of the popular food supplement, worth GH¢1,536 and 52 boxes of the 250ml dosage valued at GH¢124,800 were destroyed over the weekend.

“The Head of the Drugs Marketing Surveillance Department of the FDA, Mr Vigil Prah-Ashun, told the Daily Graphic that the food supplements were crushed and burnt over the weekend at the Nkanfoa landfill site in Cape Coast under the supervision of the regional officers of the authority,” the online news portal of the state-owned Daily Graphic reports.

The FDA in April directed the manufacturers to recall the food supplement from shelves because some samples of the product had been found to be contaminated.

Mr. Prah-Ashun told the Daily Graphic that following the directive by the FDA for the recall of the products, its officials monitored as the manufacturers complied and had the products returned by the retailers, shops, and other sources.

He said the FDA has so far been satisfied with the level of compliance from the manufacturers.

The FDA said it will continue to monitor the markets to ensure that only safe products were produced and sold.

“We have made it part of our daily market surveillance activities and have advised the public not to patronise the product until it gets a final clearance from the FDA,” Mr Prah-Ashun said.

Meanwhile, the manufacturers of the food supplement, COA Herbal Centre, said having complied with the FDA directive, it was now awaiting the next directive from the authority to resume production.

  • Menstruation is no luxury, waive tax on pads NGO tells government

Executive Director of Shalom Foundation, Shalom Lumor, has called on the government to scrap luxury tax on sanitary pads as the world celebrates Menstrual Hygiene Day.

This comes on the back of Ghana categorizing sanitary pads under luxury products and slapping 20 percent import duty on it.

Speaking to GhanaWeb, Shalom Lumor said there is nothing luxurious about periods for sanitary pads to be charged a luxury tax.

“Not only is it unfair, but the decision to tax sanitary products as luxury items is forcing some women to take desperate measures. Being forced to pay for the “luxury” of getting your period isn’t fair, and sometimes it can be too much of a challenge. Menstrual hygiene should be a right, not a luxury.”

“Menstrual products are essentials and they shouldn’t be as expensive as they are, something needs to change,” she noted.

The campaigner further argued that the controversial tax on sanitary pads when removed will be a boost for girls’ education.

“Menstrual periods are among the leading factors for girls to drop out of school in a country where most girls have no access to sanitary pads. Tax on pads tackles one of the biggest barriers to education for girls. The tax on sanitary pads when scrapped will help more girls to go to school during their periods and boost their job prospects.”

Menstrual Hygiene Day (MHD) is commemorated globally on May 28 every year with the aim to break taboos surrounding menstruation.

The day is also to highlight the importance of good menstrual hygiene management (MHM) and raise awareness of the importance of good menstrual hygiene worldwide.

  • Both NPP & NDC are political waste, let’s throw them into the garbage – Captain Smart

Veteran radio presenter Captain Smart has called for a third force in Ghana’s political space, arguing that the two biggest parties, the New Patriotic Party(NPP) and the National Democratic Congress(NDC) have failed to improve the fortunes of the country.

According to the former host of Adom FM’s Fabewoso, the aforementioned political parties have not utilised the opportunities given to them by Ghanaians and they need to be shown the exit door.

Captain Smart made these comments in an interview with Kofi Tv when answering questions about his relationship with the two biggest parties in the country.

“Both political parties(NPP & NDC) are political waste, we need to throw them in the garbage. We need a serious third force that has got a clear perception of where Ghana wants to go.”

“Both of them know me very well. Yes, I followed the NPP from childhood with J.A Kuffour and the likes of Stephen Asamoah Boateng, late Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey but I think the two parties(NPP & NDC) have lost it and there is no direction from them.”

To him, the country has not progressed because successive NPP and NDC governments are not putting the right people in certain strategic positions.

“You see, it is like the political parties(NPP & NDC) are playing a payback game. In this country, we keep changing people without understanding their role and what they can offer the country. After an election, we change everything and even change the keepers of public toilets and replace them with new people. So there is nothing like continuity and that is why anytime I’m answering a question about Ghana, I become very passionate it.”

“We have no excuse to become a better country but these two political parties are not given the right people among them certain strategic positions. They are all my friends by the way”

  • Coronavirus: US goes the Ghanaian way as Zipline Drone gets license to deliver PPEs and medical supplies

Just over a month after the TIME magazine commended Ghana for being the first country to use drones in the fight against COVID-19 and reporting that the US was considering emulating Ghana’s example, the Federal Aviation Authority has granted Zipline, the company operating Ghana’s drones, an emergency aviation waiver to use its drones to help America’s Coronavirus response.

In a special report last month, the TIME magazine praised Ghana”s innovative use of drones to deliver samples from remote villages to cities for COVID-19 tests and the US newspaper further revealed that the US was considering adopting the usage of drones in its Coronavirus response.

Now the BBC has reported that drone firm Zipline, has been given the go-ahead to deliver medical supplies and personal protective equipment to hospitals in North Carolina.

The firm will be allowed to use drones on two specified routes after the Federal Aviation Administration granted it an emergency waiver.

It is the first time the FAA has allowed beyond-line-of-sight drone deliveries in the US and experts say the pandemic could help ease some drone-flight regulations.

Zipline, which has been negotiating with the FAA, wants to expand to other hospitals and eventually offer deliveries to people’s homes.

It has been granted a waiver for two routes involving round trips of up to 30 miles (48km).

The drones will launch from a nearby fulfilment centre and drop off a box of medical products by parachute at designated spots. The drones can carry up to almost 4lb (1.8kg) of cargo and can fly at up to 80mph, even in rain or wind.

The route is currently short but Zipline hopes eventually to deliver to other hospitals and even homes.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has tasked us with being even more nimble and innovative in how to solve complex challenges,” said Angela Yochem, the chief digital officer of Novant Health, which is the partner for the service.

“Fast-tracking our medical drone transport capability is just one example of how we’re pioneering in the health care industry, which is known for being resistant to change,”

    Ghana sets global pace

Ghana became the first country in the world to resort to the use of drones to aid its COVID-19 response and that remarkable effort by the government was duly acknowledged by the New York Times.

Following the revelation of United States’ desire to adopt the innovation,
British Transport Secretary Grant Shaps announced in April that drones were being trialled to deliver medical supplies to help Britain’s response against the Coronavirus.

The severity of the pandemic has now prompted a handful of new drone deliveries, the BBC reports.

According to the BBC, Windracers Ultra fixed-wing drone has been delivering PPE from Hampshire to the Isle of Wight – a 10-minute journey – and in Ireland, Manna Aero is working with the health authority to deliver prescriptions and other essential supplies to a small rural town.

Robotics expert Prof Noel Sharkey believes the pandemic could make drone deliveries more common.

“In a global pandemic everything changes,” he said.

    Akuffo-Addo Government vindicated?

Vice President Bawumia last year launched the Zipline Medical Drones service in the country to deliver essential medical service to remote areas in the country to salvage emergencies.

With four centres in the country, the Zipline Service has been delivering essential medical supplies to health centres in remote communities, and in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic, the government decided to resort to the Zipline drones to deliver medical supplies and samples for COVID-19 tests – a move which was globally hailed.

But the introduction of the Zipline Drone Service in Ghana by the government was heavily criticised by the opposition NDC as a waste of money.

However, considering the usefulness of the Zipline drone in medical deliveries in the country, the role it has played in Ghana’s COVID-19 response so far and the recent global craze for the use of drones for medical deliveries during the Coronavirus pandemic, it seems the Akufo-Addo government has been vindicated for its vision and investment in the Zipline drone service.

  • Appoint right persons to head agricultural Ministry – Farmer

A farmer and agricultural entrepreneur has stressed the need for parties elected to form government in the country to appoint people with the right knowledge and insight to head the agricultural ministry.

Mr Gideon Seidu, the Chief Executive of Aboboyaa Enterprise in Kumasi, said agricultural production had over the years suffered major setbacks due to leadership deficiencies in the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi, he said governments over the years, had paid lip service to agriculture making the sector a challenging one and unattractive for investment.

Mr Seidu said most farmers were poor because they were unable to derive maximum benefits from their investments.

He said it was important that any person who was elected as President of Ghana appointed people that had deeper insight in agriculture and abreast with challenges of farmers and agricultural production.

Mr Seidu said it was not enough to appoint “people who have long degrees and certificates to manage the agricultural sector”.

The sector, according to him, required people with practical and innovative knowledge and skills in agriculture to work in close collaboration with farmers and all interest groups to navigate through the value chain to identify all the challenges and find solutions to them.

Mr Seidu suggested the involvement of industrious and practical farmers, such as the national best farmers, in policy development and implementation in the agricultural sector.

This, according to him would ensure that their inputs were incorporated in decisions affecting the sector.

  • Coronavirus: Business and trade associations urged to strengthen themselves

A business development consultant has stressed the need for business and trade associations to build their capacities and strengthen themselves to support their members in this COVID-19 era.

Mr Nyaaba Aweeba Azongo, says the impact of the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic on micro, small and medium scale businesses was very huge and it was important for the associations to device practical measures to assist their members to continue to stay in business.

“The lockdown brought stalemate to the business community, especially the small scale ones who are largely in the informal sector.

Capital depletion is the obvious consequences coupled with the low purchasing power to stimulate the economy”, Mr Azongo told the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Kumasi.

He said though the government had announced a stimulus package for SMEs in the country, not all of them had the capacity as individuals, to access that credit facility to support their businesses.

It was therefore, important for business and trade associations to strengthen themselves and use their numbers as collateral to support their members to access this stimulus package and other loan schemes from the banks.

“The most practical solutions should be the strengthening of business associations and using the numbers as a collateral buffer for group scheme loans from the banks”, he pointed out.

Mr Azongo said lack of adequate support to micro, small and medium scale businesses, especially those in the informal sector, had contributed to the increasing unemployment and poverty in many households in the country.

He said the barbers, hairdressers, petty traders, table-top traders along the roadside, mechanics, shop owners, fitters, and other one-man businesses, who were in the majority in business operations in the country, needed financial support to stay on their feet amid the pandemic.

The government had announced a one billion Ghana cedis stimulus package to support SMEs, which had been seriously hit by the negative impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The aim is to provide a soft and flexible credit facility to these groups of businesses to assist them to rebuild, maintain and expand their businesses to help reduce unemployment while sustaining the country’s economy from collapsing after COVID-19.

However, Mr Azongo said it was important for business associations to step in to ensure that their benefits benefited from this package and other financial support from the banks.

“I am confident that fair, transparent and just processes that respect the rules, procedures and governance systems of the Bank, and the rule of law, will ultimately prove that I have not violated the Code of Ethics of this extraordinary institution”, he said in a statement.

According to him, he sincerely appreciates the support of the bank’s shareholders.

    Below is the statement

In recent weeks and over the last few days especially, I have been overwhelmed by the tremendous support received from around the world. I have absolute confidence in the integrity of the bank that I lead and its governance systems, rules and procedures.

In spite of unprecedented attempts by some to tarnish my reputation and prejudice the bank’s governance procedures, I maintain my innocence with regard to the trumped-up allegations that unjustly seek to impugn my honour and integrity, as well as the reputation of the African Development Bank.

I sincerely appreciate the support of the Bank’s shareholders.

At this time, I remain confident that ultimately and as one collective, the Bank will emerge stronger than before and continue to support Africa’s development drive. I draw great inspiration from my heroes, Nelson Mandela and Kofi Annan, whose lives have shown that through pain, we grow. As Martin Luther King Jnr. once said, “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice. ”

I am confident that fair, transparent and just processes that respect the rules, procedures and governance systems of the Bank, and the rule of law, will ultimately prove that I have not violated the Code of Ethics of this extraordinary Institution.

I will, therefore, continue to work with each and every one of our shareholders to ensure that the African Development Bank maintains its hard-earned global reputation; and that our credible and well-functioning institutional and governance systems are reinforced, as we collectively press on to fulfil the mission of our founders to accelerate and transform Africa’s development.

  • 3 Ghanaian firms make Africas top 250 list

The Africa Business Magazine has released a ranking of the top 250 companies in Africa for 2020

South African firms dominated the list, accounting for 8 of the top 10 companies and 16 of the highest ranked 20. The highest ranked West African firm is Dangote Cement, coming in at 21, down from its 19th place last year.

Prosus, a Technological firm based in South Africa, emerged on top.

However, only three Ghanaian companies are featured on the Top 250 African company rankings for 2020.

Tullow Oil, Standard Chartered Bank and the Ghana Commercial Bank are the three Ghanaian companies that appeared on the list, placing 39th, 151st and 243 rd, respectively.

Tullow Oil previously placed 49th in 2019 while Standard Chartered Bank placed 188th last year.

Instructively though, the rankings are done on the basis of market capitalization which means only firms listed on a stock exchange are up for consideration.

Conceivably, if more large Ghanaian firms, such as Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, were listed, there would have been more entries in the rankings from the country.

For example, following the recent listing of MTN Nigeria on the Nigerian Stock Exchange, the company enters the rankings, for the first time, in 23rd place.

The ranking by Africa Business Magazine is based primarily on market capitalization data of companies operating from across the African continent.

  • Coronavirus: Traders urged to invest in procurement of PPE

Madam Aba Oppong, a Human Rights Activist, has underscored the need for traders and shop owners to acquire for themselves Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to prevent them from contracting the coronavirus.

She said traders needed PPEs such as nose masks, hand sanitizers, and Veronica Buckets in their shops and places of work to protect themselves and their customers as well.

“I am not against government authorities and philanthropists distributing such equipment to traders in this period, but I strongly urge them not to wait until they are given to them,” she explained, adding that, “the earlier one guards against contracting COVID-19, the better it will be for us all”.

Madam Oppong who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi, noted that her visits to some markets, especially, outside the city of Kumasi, had revealed that most traders are shunning the wearing of COVID-19 protective equipment.

The explanations, given by the traders, according to the Human Rights Activist, were that they had not received their share of nose masks and sanitizers from the local authorities, hence the failure to use them.

This, she said was posing a serious threat to such traders and community members since the virus continued to spread in the country every day.

As of Wednesday, May 27, 2020, Ghana has recorded over of 7,000 total COVID-19 positive cases with 34 deaths.

Madam Oppong called on the various district COVID-19 teams to intensify education in rural communities to avert misconceptions members perceived about the virus.

She advised everybody to stop stigmatization since it had ripple effects on victims.
