  • Assembly closes two main markets in the district

The Shama District Assembly has temporarily closed down two main markets in the district following the rise in COVID-19 cases in the Western Region.

The markets are Beposo and Abuesi which would be reopen after a week.

The Region, has been declared as the new hotspot in new cases for the COVID-19 pandemic with a record of 304 cases.

Mr. Joseph Amoah, the District Chief Executive for the Assembly, said the decision was necessitated by the closure of markets in the Sekondi -Takoradi Metropolis and Ahanta West Municipality.

The observation of social distancing protocols and other healthy measures in the markets have not been strictly followed over the period.

The authorities have also indicated that many of the contact tracing in the cases in the Western Region has close links to market centres.

Mr. Amoah said the closure would pave way for a shift system to be implemented when the market is eventually opened.

  • Police arrest all-female counterfeit money gang in Kumasi

A special operation by the Ghana Police Service has led to the arrest of 15 women, who are part of a gang printing and spreading fake currency notes across the Kumasi Metropolis.

The gang was rounded up at separate locations in the metropolis on Wednesday, May 27, 2020, police sources confirmed to Dailymailgh.com

A member of the gang, Joyce Ama Asare, 33, had earlier been arrested at the Ejura market on May 24, when she was going round buying items with some fake 100 and 200 Cedi notes to the sum of ¢1,100.

The arrest of her accomplices followed earlier operations at other locations in the Metropolis and other Districts in what officers have described as most significant to detect counterfeiting.

    Arrest

When police arrived at Embassy Hotel, one of the hideouts in Kumasi at about 10pm, eight persons were arrested. They have been named as; Diana Asamoah, 24, Abena Boatemaa, 33, Afia Pokuah, 40, Abena Gyamfuah, 28 and Charlotte Oforiwaa, 29.

The others are; Joana Yeboah, 29, Sandra Oforiwaa, 30 and Serwaa Rebecca, a teenager.

A genuine cash sum of ¢32,658 while another ¢17,000 worth of suspected fake notes — in denominations of 200, 100, 50, 20 and 10 — were retrieved from the suspects.

The team also made a stop at the Ducor Hotel at Abrepo in Kumasi where the seven other suspects were arrested. They were in separate hotel rooms when police stormed the facility just before 11pm.

They have also been identified as Antwiwaa Ama Victoria, Esther Akua Asamoah, Theresa Adwoa Oforiwaa, Irene Ama Serwaa, Yaa Afful and Patience Nyarko.

A genuine cash sum of ¢2,000 and suspected counterfeit notes in various denominations totaling ¢24,110 were seized by the armed policemen.

“Assorted items like microwave, wall clock, bicycle, cooking oil, silver set, soap, pepper, tubers of yam, agro chemicals were retrieved from them purported to have been purchased with fake currencies just to gain genuine currencies,” the police said in a statement.

The suspects have since been detained and will face court soon while the seized cedi notes have also been sent to the Bank of Ghana for examination.

    Other investigations

Police believe the two hotels could have a role to play in the illicit printing of the notes and may invite management for questioning.

Efforts are also underway to arrest other accomplices, the police said.

At the time of filing this report, however, a nursing mother was also in custody at the Feyiase Police Station after a bag load of fake notes were found on her.

She was arrested on Tuesday, by traders at the Aputuogya market where she embarked on a shopping spree. Witnesses say she may have been lynched but for the timely intervention of the police.

  • Tension at Gbetsile as land guards storm prayer camp

There was confusion at the Paniel Prayer Camp at Gbetsile in the Greater Accra Region on Friday, May 29, 2020, after land guards stormed the area.

According to some residents and members of the prayer camp, the land guards numbering about 30 allegedly fired warning shots as they levelled the land with earth-moving equipment.

Some of the residents now say they fear for their lives following the incident.

“For the prayer camp; the urinal, manhole, and a whole lot were destroyed. They have pulled a lot of mango trees down. I think someone is trying to cause tension here and we are not happy. We have been to the police station to lodge a complaint and they have come to inspect the place. We are yet to see the action of the police but we are pleading with them to bring the perpetrators to book,” one of them said to Citi News.

“Something is seriously going on here and so we are pleading with the government to come to our aid. For us, we will not allow anyone to work on this site because this prayer camp has been here for a very long time.”

This is not the first time there is unrest in the community within the Kpone Katamanso Municipality over the activities of land guards.

Located off the Tema Akosombo Highway, Gbetisle is a few minutes drive from the Central Business area of Tema.

Due to the low cost of land and the proximity of communities located at the peripheries of Tema to the industrial hub of Tema, most workers who seek to own their own properties have no choice than to lease lands in communities such as Gbetsile and its environs.

This, however, has come at a high cost to many of these innocent developers as they are met with a series of challenges including land guard attacks and fraudulent land sales.

  • ‘Parliament did not lie’ over MPs Covid-19 tests results

Parliament has rejected the claim that it lied over test results of members and staff tested for Covid-19.

The claim by the Minority Chief Whip, Mubarak Muntaka Wednesday appeared to pour cold on demands by the house on a media outfit for a retraction of a publication that had said some members of parliament and a number of staffers there had tested positive for the new coronavirus.

The Directorate of Public Affairs however, says in a statement it issued Thursday night that the House did not lie when the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu called the publication ‘speculative Journalism’ and demanded a retraction.

Below is the statement by the Public Affairs Directorate of Parliament.

PARLIAMENT DID NOT LIE, MAJORITY LEADER, NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR COVID-19 RESULTS

Contrary to reports in the media, that Parliament lied about the results of the COVID-19 tests results, Parliament would like to state categorically that no untruth was peddled in the said matter. This follows allegations by the Honorable Minority Chief Whip that the Director of Public Affairs lied in the said matter and that these were told to her by the Honorable Majority Leader.

We would like to put on record that the Majority Leader is in no way involved with the process of the testing. The duty of coordinating the testing process is that of the Medical Director in Parliament, who told Parliament specifically that the results of the tests were not yet known by Parliament as at Tuesday 26/05/2020. To attribute lies to the Public Affairs Department, the Majority Leader and the entire Parliament is therefore unfortunate.

Parliament wants to put on record that it has no particular interest in hiding the results of the tests. Parliament would also like to make specific reference to a news release dated 26/05/2020 signed by the Director of Public Affairs which requested the media house to pull the story down on the basis that the facts were not true since they were not known to the directorate and would like to state that this assertion does not mean that the House denied the possibility of anyone testing positive for COVID-19. It therefore is rather unfortunate that this was interpreted to mean a denial of a possible positive test result, leading to media reports that Parliament lied.

We wish to state categorically that the Majority Leader is the leader of the House and performs his duties as such. He does not deal with the day to day running of the various departments of the institution and could not have told the Director of Public Affairs to lie either on his behalf or on that
    of the institution.

    THE PUBLIC AFFAIRS DIRECTORATE.

  • ‘Shame on America’ – Rawlings reacts to George Floyd murder

Former President Jerry John Rawlings says the death of a black man at the hands of a white police officer in Minneapolis is evidence of America’s moral decline.

The former President in a tweet quizzed: “If some of these atrocities, especially from some white police officers against black citizens, cannot shock the American populace to see evidence of their own decline, what can?”

He continued: How can a police officer be the source of such cruel, violent death with his knee choking down a black man’s neck till he is motionless? And why do these cruelties end up in farcical trials that see the evil culprits escape justice and capital punishment?! This is painful and sad.

“I implore every American citizen to watch the video. Shame on America, Shame on Americans”.

He was reacting to the death of George Floyd, 46, who died on Monday. A viral video showed him gasping for breath as a white policeman knelt on his neck.

His death has sparked protests in Minnesota.

    What happened to George Floyd?

Officers responding to reports of the use of counterfeit money approached Mr Floyd in his vehicle on Monday.

According to police, he was told to step away from the car, physically resisted officers and was handcuffed.

Video of the incident does not show how the confrontation started, but a white officer can be seen with his knee on Mr Floyd’s neck, pinning him down.

Mr Floyd can be heard saying “please, I can’t breathe” and “don’t kill me”.

The city has identified the four officers involved as Derek Chauvin, Tou Thao, Thomas Lane and J Alexander Kueng.

The Minneapolis Police Officers’ Federation said the officers were co-operating with the investigation.

The Minnesota police handbook states that officers trained on how to compress the neck without applying direct pressure to the airway can use a knee under its use-of-force policy. This is regarded as a non-deadly-force option.

  • Mahama on why there should be mass testing for Covid-19

Former President John Dramani Mahama has called for the mass testing of students, teachers and church attendants in the event of the easing of restrictions imposed on schools and churches to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said at least, the testing should take place at the “point of need.”

In his latest write-up on the coronavirus pandemic, Mr Mahama said: “In the face of the imminent easing of restrictions, let me repeat the call on the government to consider conducting mass testing, at least, at the point of need.”

Explaining, he said: “What it means is that, for instance, all students, teachers and ancillary staff returning to school or church attendants, following the easing of restrictions, should undergo a mandatory COVID-19 test as a safety precaution”.

    President hints

Last week, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo hinted of plans to ease the COVID-19 restrictions in the country very soon.

Addressing a delegation from the Anlo traditional Council that called on him at the Jubilee House, the President said: “Stakeholder consultations are taking place on the way forward towards the easing of restrictions so that our social and economic lives can go back to normal.

“I expect these consultations to conclude this week so that I can announce to Ghanaians a clear road map for easing the restrictions. We have to find a way back, but in safety, for we cannot be under these restrictions forever.”

    Hasty decision

In his latest write-up, Mr Mahama said the government had accumulated enough resources in the name of the pandemic to be able to fund a mass testing, even if it had to rely on private laboratories “for the sake of the life and health of Ghanaians.”

Notwithstanding his call for mass testing, Mr Mahama said he was against “hasty reopening of schools.”

“I must indicate here my support for the position of the various teacher unions and parents who have spoken and cautioned against the hasty reopening of schools. Government must pay close attention and take into consideration, the concerns of the various unions and parents” he said.

Mr Mahama said any decision taken by the government to ease the restrictions needed to be based on the utmost respect for human life and the science of the disease the world and the country was dealing with.

He said decisions based on false premises would have grave consequences for all Ghanaians.

    Public education

On public education on the disease, he said the government had unfortunately not managed it efficiently.

According to him, the latest communication created the false impression that all was well with the management and spread of the disease.

“The advice from the President and other government officials that we should begin to learn to live with the disease suggests that you and I must take our destiny into our own hands as far as COVID-19 is concerned.

“This is coming at a time that public education on the disease has dwindled to the extent that observance of hygiene and distancing protocols, as I indicated earlier, appear to be waning, “ he stated.

Mr Mahama said the absence of an effective mass education programme had contributed to the avoidable stigmatisation of people who had recovered from the infection.

    Mask wearing

The former President further emphasised the wearing of masks.

“The benefit of wearing face masks at this time is obvious, and I reiterate my call on government to utilise some of the funds from the Stabilisation Fund and the IMF to enhance local production and free distribution of re-usable face masks to especially vulnerable communities and groups,” he said.

Additionally, he said, the government needed to set aside some funds to assist those who had lost their means of livelihood and places of abode as a result of stigmatisation.

He said the government’s refusal to involve traditional rulers and assembly members in the education and management of the disease had been a big gap in the National Response Plan.

    Safety

Mr Mahama appealed to the public to strictly adhere to physical distancing, avoid touching commonly used surfaces and ensure they sanitised their hand when they did.

“But more importantly is the wearing of face masks anytime you decide to step out. Ensure that the next person sitting away from you or talking to you is wearing a mask too. For those who have re-usable masks, remember to soak and wash them in soapy water and press with a hot iron every day,” he said.

    Parliament

Mr Mahama said reports that the virus had spread to the Chamber and offices of Parliament were very disturbing. He therefore called for transparency in communicating the full picture of the extent of the disease.

“What it means is that, for instance, all students, teachers and ancillary staff returning to school or church attendants, following the easing of restrictions, should undergo a mandatory COVID-19 test as a safety precaution.”

  • George Floyd death: Ex-officer held in Minneapolis

A man sacked as a police officer following the death of unarmed black man George Floyd in the US city of Minneapolis has been arrested, officials say.

Derek Chauvin is one of four police officers who were fired after Mr Floyd’s death in custody on Monday.

There have been days of protests, looting and arson after an officer was filmed kneeling on George Floyd’s neck.

Mr Chauvin has been charged with murder and manslaughter.

The case has added to US anger over police killings of black Americans.

On Thursday, during the third night of protests over Mr Floyd’s death, a police station was set alight. A number of buildings have been burned, looted and vandalised in recent days, prompting the activation of the state’s National Guard troops.

There have also been demonstrations in other US cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver, Phoenix and Memphis.

Earlier on Friday, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said he expected “swift and fair” justice for Mr Floyd’s death.

President Donald Trump said “thugs” were dishonouring Mr Floyd’s memory and called on the National Guard to restore order.

Social media network Twitter accused Mr Trump of glorifying violence in a post that said: “When the looting starts, the shooting starts.”

  • Dr Ofori Sarpong; Dr Osei Kwame Despite has being instrumental in my bid to become an entrepreneur.

Business mugol, Dr Ernest Ofori Sarpong, brother and business partner of Dr Osei Kwame Despite, the owner of Despite group of companies, recently had a entrepreneurial mentoring section with NUGS and Ghanaian students in Beijing, China.

Dr Enerst Ofori Sarpong, shared with the students how to successfully launch a business idea and grow it up to success, amidst the challenges such as access to raw materials, capital or financing, competition, choosing business idea and most importantly choosing a business partner.

During the forum or the mentoring section which was done via zoom, most of them took turns to asked questions.

He began addressing the students by sharing how he started his importation business.

Dr Enerst Ofori Sarpong said it begun when he travelled to Russia with Dr Osei Kwame Despite in 1991.

He later went to Hong Kong with his brother Despite, but according to him, business was not booming due to flactuation in inflation, which had a dire impact on his importing business when it came to financing.

He said in the 90s, the US Dollar was quite unstable due to persistent galloping inflation at the time resulting in high foreign exchange.

Then, he thought it wise to venture into a business locally in Ghana which would not require foreign currency resulting in high foreign exchange costs and where he can easily get raw materials locally in Ghana.

So he discussed the idea with his brother, Dr Osei Kwame Despite.

He said he consulted his brother if they could venture into a business that would not require foreign currency or foreign exchange and where they can get raw materials locally to avoid the usage of the US Dollar.

According to Dr Enerst Ofori Sarpong, that gave birth to U2 company Ltd that is into salt mining from where they produce U2 Ioidated Salt. The business partnership relationship between himself and Despite started from that establishment, he intimated.

He advised the students to be selective concerning the choice of business partners they choose.

You have to choose a partner who is ernest, someone who is success driven like yourself and share similar dreams and aspirations with. Thankfully I found those traits in my friend, Dr Osei Kwame Despite.

He advises me a lot and I pay tribute to him.

One of the reasons for establishing the U2 company and the U2 salt business was to establish a local business, where I could access the major raw materials locally and not a business where I have to get about 50% of the the raw materials from abroad.

So for my businesses like the Special group of companies and the rest, they are those that I could find the raw materials locally. I do not like to start a business where I may have to import majority of the raw materials. I want to build on what we have as a nation.

In entrepreneurship, one of the ways to get business ideas is to look within the society and try to find missing links and fill in those gaps by way of coming up with ideas and gathering resources to start a business and make profit.

In concluding Dr Ernest Ofori Sarpong said, ‘collectively we have to come together and build our nation as Ghanaians because that’s what we have and what we owned’.

‘I also believe entrepreneurship is about innovation and innovation is endless, there are always gaps everywhere and once you research well, you will be able to find a loophole somewhere, tap into it, start up a business and grow that business.’ He advised.

He said a good example of finding a business idea or opportunity is how the outbreak of COVID19 in Ghana expose Ghana’s lack of some of resources.

This has compelled some Ghanaians to create innovatively certain business ideas that has brought about the creation of nose masks, Veronica buckets, hands sanitizers, manuel and electrically operated hand-washing basins etc.

Dr Ofori Sarpong ended the segment on the note that, all Ghanaians whether in the country or abroad should come together, find a missing link somewhere in the society and start a business from it and am sure gradually they can become the big future business men they aspire to be.

  • Lockdown entire country for 10 days rather than easing restrictions CEGA to Akufo-Addo

Center for Ethical Governance and Administration (CEGA) has called on President Akufo-Addo not to ease restriction as the number of Coronavirus cases has surged to over 7000.

According to CEGA, government should rather lockdown the entire country completely and comprehensively for 10 days and use the period to conduct mass or random testing in order to substantially contain the disease before any consideration.

In a press statement, CEGA stated that “In this regard, we urge the President and all state institutions including the Electoral Commission of Ghana and the National Identification Authority not to be motivated by any non-health considerations to undertake any mass gathering activities to recklessly jeopardize the lives of Ghanaians.”

“We call on His Excellency the President to rather lock down the entire country completely and comprehensively for 10 days and use the period to conduct mass or random testing in order to substantially contain the disease before any consideration can be given to ease the restrictions on social or physical distancing and other hygienic protocols meant to protect the lives of Ghanaians.”

    Below is the full statement

CENTER FOR ETHICAL GOVERNANCE AND ADMINISTRATION (CEGA)

WORDS OF CAUTION TO PRESIDENT AKUFO-ADDO ON COVID-19
    FROM CEGA

In a few days time, the President of the Republic and Commander In Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, President Akufo-Addo will address the nation on his policy direction on Covid-19 situation in Ghana.

So far there are mixed apprehensions among sections of the Ghanaian society on whether or not the President should take the unchartered course of easing the restrictions imposed under Executive Instruments including easing the ban on social and political gatherings.

Undoubtedly, these measures were suprisingly implemented without serious official commitment to enforcement. And the measures appear not to have been able to contain and or prevent the vertical spread of the pandemic in Ghana.

Strangely enough, and in the midst of rising number of cases of the pandemic, various interest groups such as Religious organisations, Educational institutions and business communities were mounting pressure on His Excellency the President to ease the restrictions.

These parochial interest groups have adduced one reason or the other as to why the President should look towards the direction of easing the social and political restrictions currently in force.

On one extreme and worrisome end is the immense political pressure being mounted by the President’s own political party, the NPP to ease the restrictions in order to afford them the opportunity to conduct their primaries to elect their parliamentary candidates, and go to Congress to confirm the President and his Vice President for the Party’s 2020 ticket.

In the midst of all these contending and confusing interests is the vexed question of the restrictions being eased to enable the National Identification Authority (NIA) to proceed to the Eastern Region to continue with the registration of people for the issuance of ECOWAS Identity Card.

As these apparent parochial interests play up, there has not been any due cognisance of the rising numbers of positive cases in the fast spreading Covid-19 epidemic in the country.

At the time of going to Press on 29th May, 2020, Ghana has recorded 7,616 Covid-19 infection cases.

Given the ferocious nature of the spread of this deadly pandemic, the CEGA strongly urges the Pressident to err on the side of caution and be mindful of the fact that the lives of over 30million Ghanaians depend on what decisions he takes and announces on his next address to the nation.

The President has often been quoted as saying “we can bring our economy back but we cannot bring back lost lives”

During the recent Heads of State Virtual Summit on the pandemic, His Excellency the President is on record to have profoundly advised his fellow heads of state not to be swayed to follow examples of other countries, but rather to take decisions based on their own country specific conditions and circumstances.

Given our soaring number of the epidemic, in addition to the position taken by the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and other health professionals and experts against easing of restrictions, the CEGA is of the strongest view that easing the restrictions under the EI 64 will not be in the best interest of the people in the country.

In this regard, we urge the President and all state institutions including the Electoral Commission of Ghana and the National Identification Authority not to be motivated by any non-health considerations to undertake any mass gathering activities to recklessly jeopardize the lives of Ghanaians.

We call on His Excellency the President to rather lock down the entire country completely and comprehensively for 10 days and use the period to conduct mass or random testing in order to substantially contain the disease before any consideration can be given to ease the restrictions on social or physical distancing and other hygienic protocols meant to protect the lives of Ghanaians.

We advice this, because any other decision to the contrary will amount to reckless disregard for the lives of Ghanaians.

Ghanaian lives must matter more to the President and all than Ghanaian votes.

  • John Mahama replies Gabby Otchere-Darko – You are suffering from psychosis

In yet another cryptic Facebook post former President Mahama seems to have replied Gabby Otchere-Darko, who himself last night through a cryptic Facebook post seemed to throw jabs at the former President.

Mr.. Otchere-Darko made the following post “It must be pretty frustrating when your choice of running mate turns you flat down…especially after you have approached him personally with your offer.

Uneasy lies the head that wears a thorny crown…”

If we thought it was in reference to John Dramani Mahama, then it looks like we are in luck because Mr. Mahama this morning made a post which seems like a direct reply to Otchere-Darko.

    The former President posted,

“It can be a frustrating psychosis when you are unable to correctly predict the winning ticket of your opponent”

What one can pick from this post is that whoever it is the former President plans to pick as his running mate, he has very high hopes in. if the post was indeed a direct response to Mr. Otchere-Darko, then keen-eyed political watchers will be looking out for any more related posts from the two gentlemen.

The battle lines are now well and truly drawn.

  • Dr. Kwame Nkrumah didn’t know that the small boy he met will overthrow him 11 years later – Story

A very sad yet interesting picture spotted on social media summarized how life can be funny and simply unpredictable.

The picture captured Ghana’s first president Dr. Kwame Nkrumah shaking hands and congratulating a 19 year old Lt. General Akwasi Afrifa for his academic excellence.

Little did Dr. Kwame Nkrumah know that the young man (a 19 year old Lt. General Akwasi Afrifa) that he met at Adisadel College will grow up, plan a coup d’etat against him and succeed in overthrowing his government.

Lieutenant General Akwasi Afrifa and Lieutenant Colonel Kotoka were top conspirators of the February 24th, 1966 coup d’etat that overthrew Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s government.

There are several conspiracy theories surrounding the overthrow of the Kwame Nkrumah government and the reigning of all the conspiracies is that; the CIA in collaboration with other powerful forces weren’t very happy with Nkrumah’s Africa unite agenda hence supported and helped with the coup against him.

  • Menzgold saga: Payboy officials arrested by EOCO

Officials of a payment company that was appointed by Menzgold to negotiate settlement with its unpaid customers have been arrested.

In a press release issued in Accra on Friday, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) revealed that officials of the digital payment, marketing and promotions company were picked up because they lacked the requisite licence to operate.

“Initial investigations have revealed that the company was operating without the requisite licenses from either the Bank of Ghana or the Security and Exchanges Commission,” EOCO explained.

Menzgold appointed Payboy as a third-party entity to negotiate the settlement with the thousands of customers of the failed gold dealership firm.

Menzgold said in a statement at the time that the company will negotiate and facilitate the payment of the investment of its customers whose investments are still locked up.

The Bank of Ghana collaborated with other regulatory agencies to pull the brakes on the activities of Menzgold some two years ago over regulatory issues, bringing to end what many say was a Ponzi scheme.

It is estimated that the failed gold dealership firm owes up to $42 million in accrued investments and principals.

Thousands of students had earlier on Wednesday returned to school as the country began easing virus restrictions.

But just a day later, 79 new cases were recorded, the highest daily figure in two months.

Most of these cases have been linked to a distribution centre outside Seoul.

The warehouse, in the city of Bucheon, is run by the country’s biggest e-commerce firm Coupang, and officials have said the facility was not strictly complying with infection control measures. Health officials even discovered traces of Covid-19 on workers’ shoes and clothes.

It’s possible that South Korea will continue to see a rise in cases as it continues to test thousands of employees from the centre.

Some 58 new cases were recorded on Friday, bringing the total number of cases nationwide to 11,402.

Public parks and museums across Seoul and its surrounding cities have now been closed, businesses are being urged to encourage more flexible working, and people are once again being asked to avoid mass gatherings.

South Korea endured one of the worst outbreaks of the virus earlier this year, but had appeared to have brought it under control, thanks to an extensive “trace, test and treat” programme.

Recent weeks, however, have seen new clusters emerge, including one linked to a man who visited five nightclubs and bars in Seoul’s nightlife district of Itaewon earlier this month.

According to Yonhap News, some 266 cases have been traced to the Itaewon cluster.

  • Autonomous league will reduce your influence Ex-GHALCA Chairman tells Kurt Okraku

Former Chairman of Ghana Leagues Clubs Association [GHALCA], Alhaji Ali Raji has cautioned Ghana Football Association [GFA] President, Mr Kurt Okraku to be cautious of the implementation of the autonomous league.

The Ghana FA has announced its decision to make the Premier League autonomous.

But Mr Raji believes that the influence of the President will be drastically reduced if the GFA loses control on the league.

“I am surprised about the eagerness of the new GFA President to see the league go autonomous, it will greatly reduce the influence of the President,” he told Akoma FM.

”Ghana Football is all about the league and therefore if he loses influence and control on the league, where lies his authority again,” he added.

The GFA Executive Council outlined steps to make the Ghana Premier League autonomous a couple of days ago.

Pursuance to that, Premier League Clubs nominated three eminent persons to serve on the Autonomous Committee tasked with the responsibility of developing the modalities and the road map to make the league autonomous and independent of the Ghana Football Association.

Togbe Afede XIV, Mr John Ansah and Delali Senaye will be joined by two persons selected by the GFA to begin the process.

  • Bernard Mornah’s reaction to CID invitation; I only cautioned the EC

The Chairman of the Peoples National Convention (PNC), Mr Bernard Mornah has said he only cautioned the Electoral Commission (EC) on the chaos that could come up should it decide to go ahead with the new voters’ registration exercise.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has invited Mr Mornah to assist with an investigation it is conducting into an allegation of threat against the EC, should it decide to go ahead with the compilation of a new voter’s register in late June 2020.

The police have sent an invitation letter to him asking that he should report at the CID headquarters on Tuesday, June 2, 2020, at 10 am.

“The CID Headquarters is investigating a case in which you [Mornah] were alleged to have threatened to resist any attempt by the Electoral Commission (EC) to compile a new voter’s register for the 2020 general election.”

“You were also heard in a video interview to have threatened “that people who are already Ghanaians and already registered are going to be taken out of the register, don’t you think confusion will come at the registration and if confusion come there, you think the EC staff will be safe, we will beat each other there, we will kill each other there if that is what the EC want to lead this nation to,” the invitation letter dated May 28, 2020 and signed by Barima Tweneboah Sasraku II, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) for the Director General of CID said.

But in a radio interview on Accra based Citi FM on Thursday evening, Mr Mornah said his statement was a caution to the EC if it was “intending to flip us [Ghanaians] through this dangerous path, they should know that there would be confusion.”

“And so it is a caution. If cautions become threats, I will not run away from it. But you know, I don’t know who thought the CID English in school because my English teacher when he sees this statement will know that it is a caution and that he taught me English well, and that a caution cannot represent a threat. But if they see it as a threat, then I may have to bring my English teacher to tell them that caution is different from threat.”

Mr Mornah who reiterated that he made the statement at a press conference on May 26, 2020, organised by the Inter-Party Resistance Against New Register (IPRAN) insisted that “I have nothing to run away from. The Electoral Commission is messing our democracy and we must do everything to resist and we will resist it. There is nothing that will allow us to sit down and allow this Electoral Commission to slip our democracy away from the peace and stability that we have enjoyed.”

“And so when we are telling the Electoral Commission and alerting that, oh! your action can lead us on a very perilous path and you come and say that we are threatening, I don’t know, so I will visit the CID, I’ve told my lawyer that I will be going there and if my lawyer wants to come fine, but if my lawyer wants to water down the words, I will ask him to go because I am responsible enough to own my words.”

Mr Mornah insisted that his polling station is Sankana and that the number of people who have passports there are not up to 10.

“The polling station is Sankana, those of us who have Ghana Cards, I’m not sure we are up to 100. Meanwhile there are over 800 people in my polling station, I’m not talking about the entire Sankana, because we have four polling stations in Sankana. And so when we go there and then we don’t have the Ghana Card, not because we don’t want it but because you [NIA] did not give us the opportunity to obtain it.”

“Even those who have registered, they don’t have the card because you [NIA] could not print it for them and so when they have to receive the cards, you don’t just bring the cards and go and stand in Sankana market and start mentioning their names to come for it, you’ll have to carry your equipment there so that they can come and place their fingers again to authenticate that they are the owners of the cards that you are talking about.”

“That processes alone, it will take time. So we don’t have the cards that you are using as source document and you are saying that you are going to compile a new register on that and I’m alerting you that there will be confusion and you say that I’m threatening you, there would be confusion la!,” Mr Mornah said.

  • Braydon Manu reveals how he relied on God during injury

Braydon Manu was not really satisfied with his second division debut at Erzgebirge Aue . The processes and mechanisms were not there beforesaid the offensive player on Wednesday. “But that comes with time. If you play a lot, you know how to move and what the other person wants from you. ”

Manu has not played a competitive game for over a year. After moving from third division club Hallescher FC to Böllenfalltor last summer, he injured himself in preparation, dropped out of the first half of the season and had to wait until now.

Through this hard time, his belief in God helped him. “When you’re in such a difficult phase, you always need a rock, an anchor, that gives you a hold,” he said. But his family and his teammates – especially Patric Pfeiffer and Erich Berko – would also have been very supportive. “They gave me the push to believe even more in myself, to believe more in God, so that I can get out of this situation at some point.”

Braydon Manu on his debut: “It came as a surprise to me too”

On Monday, trainer Dimitrios Grammozis had certified the 23-year-old German-Ghanaian had a good training performance. But after Manu before that only in the game against Dresden part of the squad , he was right in the starting line-up against Aue. “It came as a surprise to me,” he said and added with a laugh: “But at some point you have to start.”

Compared to the 3rd league, he did not find his first game in the 2nd league to be faster. Against Aue it was not easy for him as an offensive player because the Saxons trained by ex-lily coach Dirk Schuster had closed with a chain of five at the back. After all, he took out the penalty to equalize (“100 percent hit me”) and contributed something to the result.

Victor Pálsson was not so critical of his teammate’s performance – on the contrary. “It was great,” said the Icelander about the performance of the 1.70 meter tall manu, whom he called “my little brother”. Step by step, he will now get even better.
