Some assembly members in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region have petitioned President Akufo-Addo to allow District Assembly meetings to be reconvened to enable members discuss issues pertaining to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the role assembly members could play to educate their communities to avoid the spread of the virus.

According to the elected assembly members, since the Assembly had not called a meeting upon the outbreak of the Covid-19, one-third of the members numbering 24 wrote to the Assembly to invite them for an emergency meeting.

Spokesperson of the group, Mr. Mac Donald Kwofie who is the assembly member for Sanzule-Bakanta electoral area said the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Kwasi Bonzoh responded to their letter and requested to meet the 24 signatories in the letter.

As expected, Mr. Bonzoh met the members within the premise of the assembly, in addition, to five other officials from the District Assembly’s office including the District Coordinating Director, Mr. Atsu.

Before the meeting started, the DCE was categorical on the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic which has suspended all public meetings of not more than 25 people except Parliament.

Mr. Bonzoh told the Assembly Members that “I will be the last person to flout the President’s directive on safety protocols”.

Upon counting the number at meeting, the said they were 29 and therefore dismissed the meeting.

Speaking to GhanaWeb’s Western Regional correspondent, Mr. Mac Donald asked the President to reconsider the directive since it was affecting consensus building at the local government level.

He said since Parliament meets to represent their constituents and explain policies to them, same privilege must be extended to the District Assembly.

According to him, Assembly Members have a crucial role to play in fighting COVID-19 yet no Assembly Members has been invited for a meeting on how to fight the disease.

Mr. Kwofie said Assembly Members have nothing in terms of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to distribute to their communities.

In a communique issued and signed by the Members and copied to GhanaWeb, they appealed to the President to call the DCE to order to remove all the personal photographs on all COVID-19 items paid by the tax payers and donation from corporate Ghana and emboss the items with Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) or the District Assembly.

“The DCE must hand over all COVID-19 items for the communities to the unit committees through the elected Assembly Members within five days”, the statement emphasized.

The communique also stated that the DCE must stop discrimination in the distribution of COVID-19 funds and donations.

The communique further reminded the DCE not to fight the pandemic with party faithfuls, and tell members of the Assembly the committee managing the Covid-19 fund without Finance and Administration sub-committee decision for general Assembly approval.

    Failing to elect Presiding Member

These Assembly Members have bemoaned on how the Ellembelle District Assembly was working without a Presiding Member (PM).

They urged the DCE to invite all the Assembly Members as a matter of urgency to elect a Presiding Member to chair meetings for the smooth running of the Assembly.

“The DCE must invite all members of the Assembly to elect a Presiding Member at the Yinson Hall at NASS where the social distancing protocol could be observed”, the statement requested.

The communique also reminded the DCE not to spend the Assembly revenue or Common Fund without approval by a well constituted General Assembly as stated in section 170 of the Local Government Act, 2016 (Act 936).

The Members urged the DCE to account to the Assembly without delay all expenses incurred on Assembly projects without approval from the Assembly and all donations received either in cash or kind to help prevent Covid-19 on or before April 30, 2020.

Galamsey activities in Ellembelle and other concerns

The communique also urged the DCE to arrest illegal miners and those behind it which has destroyed the river bodies, the land of Nkroful Agricultural Senior High School (NASS).

  • You need to go through reports to understand economic figures – IMF Country Rep

The Country Representative of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to Ghana Dr. Albert Touna Mama has said that economic figures are generated from reports and that one needs to read full reports to understand different economic figures which have been presented.

Speaking on Joy FM’s news analysis programme News File on Saturday to clarify allegations of falsification of figures to the IMF by the government, the IMF representative rejected the allegation, saying the government did not misreport figures to the IMF, but rather, the IMF generated its figures from data (report) the government presented to it.

According to Fact Check Ghana and the opposition NDC, the government of Ghana had in its budgets to Parliament for 2018 and 2019 presented fiscal deficits of 3.0% and 4.4% of GDP but changed the figures to 7.0% and 7.5% of GDP to the IMF for 2018 and 2019 respectively.

For Gross International Reserve, Fact Check Ghana and the NDC also alleged that government quoted 6,800 and 8,100 for 2018 and 2019 in its budget to Parliament but changed the figures to 5,317 and 6,634 for the same period respectively to the IMF.

But the IMF Country representative noted that figures they published in their statements for fiscal deficit and gross international reserve were figures they generated themselves from reports they received from the government, which contained discussions and explanations on both sets of figures.

He also expressed the belief that the budget statements presented to Ghanaians by the government similarly discusses and offers explanations on figures.

“These statements (IMF’s figures) are at the back of a report,” said the IMF Country Rep.

“When you go through these reports, all these discrepancies are discussed and I believe that the budget statements also goes into these discrepancies.”

“So you cannot go through these reports and at the end of the report compare apple and peers. You need to go through the reports and understand what are the figures that have been presented.”

While the IMF calculated its fiscal deficit without financial sector payments and energy sector payments, the government did so with the two payments. Similarly, the IMF calculated the gross international reserve without the heritage and stabilization fund, while the government’s method of calculating added the two.

But Dr. Albert Touna Mama said nothing was hidden by the government and that it is aware of the reason for the government’s methodology as captured in the report they received and the budget statements.

“When it comes to the data we received that we worked with, in this debate, there is nothing new that we did not know about.”

Asked whether it is the IMF’s preference that the government must include financial sector payments and energy sector payments when preparing financial reports, the IMF country director said the IMF doesn’t necessarily need to have a preference.

“We don’t need to have a preference,” he said.

The IMF rep added that it is not necessarily wrong for the government not to include certain elements in determining certain indicators in some instances.

He cited an example of an agreement the IMF had with the government to set aside financial sector payments in determining fiscal deficit at some point under the Ghana-IMF program, which ended in 2019, because the financial sector payment was not anticipated during the original design of the programme.

“For example during the program that expired in April 2019, when the issue of the financial sector came up, because initially in the design of the program, this is something that was not anticipated, and the program aimed to achieve some fiscal target, a decision was made that the financial sector really needed to be taken care of.”

“And if you really want a true picture of the fiscal effort that the government is making, we need to strip out financial sector cost. Because this is a necessary action so that you can generate economic quotes in the future so we agreed on that.”

“On the financial sector payment, we agreed to put them aside and just measure the fiscal effort without financial sector cost.”

  • Bekwai Hospital nears completion five decades after sod-cutting

For almost five decades, the people of Bekwai in the Ashanti Region have had to complain about the delay in the completion of work on the municipal hospital.

Although the project has been captured in annual budgets of successive governments, little had been done to continue work on it, bringing difficulties on the people in accessing quality health care.

However, there is light at the end of the tunnel as the 120-bed capacity hospital is on the verge of completion.

The facility which started in the early 1970s now has two contractors — Consar Ghana Ltd and Ellipse Company — winding up their works for the planned inauguration in November this year.

A visit to the facility last Saturday by the Daily Graphic saw the contractors eagerly fixing equipment and completing remaining civil works to meet the November deadline for handing over to the government and subsequently to the Bekwai health authorities for use.

    Lifeline

The completion of the multi-million-dollar project was given a boost when Parliament, in August 2019, approved a €2 million facility towards its completion.

A completion and inauguration of the municipal hospital would be a dream come true for the chiefs and people of the Bekwai Municipality and its surrounding communities who have waited for decades to see the completion of the project.

When finished, the hospital would decongest the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). This is due to its size, departments and strategic location in the Ashanti Region, which makes it easy to reach from the Eastern and Central regions.

Some of the key facilities that the hospital would have are an Accident and Emergency unit, Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) unit, Surgical theatres and wards, X-Ray unit, general consulting rooms, mother and baby unit, laboratory, antenatal unit and staff accommodation.

    Unique feature

One unique feature of the hospital is a guest lodge where relations who need to be close to patients on admission at the facility would be housed while waiting for their relatives to recover.

This is the first of its kind in any government hospital in the country.

The guest lodge will remove the challenges of transportation and accommodation faced by relatives of patients on admission at the hospital.

Apart from ensuring that the guests are able to attend to the social needs of their relatives while on admission at the right time, it will also save the relations the drudgery of hovering around health facilities as they wait for their relations to recover from their ailments at the hospital.

The new hospital, which is disability friendly, has a linkage of walkways from various locations of the facility.

    Records

The Bekwai Municipality has a total of 18 health facilities comprising six hospitals (Government, Christian Health Association of Ghana, and private), four Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, three health centres and five clinics (CHAG and private).

All the facilities dotted in various locations in the municipality have been very instrumental in the delivery of quality health care to the people.

In 2018, a total of 226,859 out patients department (OPD) cases were recorded in all health facilities in the municipality out of which 54,779 representing 24 per cent were recorded at the old Bekwai Government Hospital alone.

The story was however different in 2019 where the cases stood at 221,450 for the entire municipality out of which 55,204, representing 25 per cent of the total OPD cases came from the Bekwai Hospital alone.

    Old hospital

The old Bekwai Government Hospital which the Municipal Director of Health, Mr Clement Nti-Boateng, described as “A glorified health centre” does not have enough space for clients and staff. It also lacks key departments and staff.

Apart from the inadequacies that the old hospital has, it is not able to provide the needed standard health care.

These and many other reasons necessitated the construction of a new district hospital that would bring with it the needed space, equipment, staff and all others so it would be able to serve all its patients with the standard of health care needed.

The Municipal Director of Health told the Daily Graphic that he had started moves to get adequate staff to manage the new departments which have been brought on board in the new hospital.

This, he said, was being done through a collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Directorate of Health to ensure that by the time of handing over, the right personnel would have been posted to the new facility to begin its operation.

    MCE, MP impressed

The Municipal Chief Executive for Bekwai, Mr Kwaku Kyei-Baffour, said the completion and the subsequent usage of the new district hospital would be a dream come true since it would bring the much needed health care for the people — some of whom have to travel far distances to seek health care due to the lack of certain services at the old hospital.

Again, he appealed to the people in the municipality to continue toexercise patience as everything possible was being done to ensure that the project was completed on schedule for use.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Bekwai, Mr Joseph Osei Owusu, at a recent tour of the facility with the media, appealed to the contractors to ensure that they maintained the quality standard of the work by following due process in all their activities.

He commended the contractors for the swift way they were working on the project many other governments had failed to complete for use.

The Project Manager for Ellipse Company, the construction entity, Mr Maxwell Opoku Amoah, said the project would be completed before the handing over date of November 2020.

He said about 85 per cent of works was completed with the remaining works being the installation of equipment, completion of few civil works and tarring of the roads.

  • COVID-19 testing is free — GHS

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has cautioned the public to be careful about imposters who are extorting money from people in the name of contact tracing.

It said the state was not charging any contact of COVID-19-infected persons money to have his or her sample taken and tested.

The caution comes on the back of incidents reported to the Daily Graphic that some unscrupulous persons were calling people to demand mobile money transfers from those people for them to undergo testing to know their COVID-19 status.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic in Accra yesterday, the Head of the Public Relations Unit at the GHS, Mr Jacob Andoh, said: “We don’t take any money from anybody to take his or her sample; we have not sent any contact tracers to communities to take money from people either.”

He said district offices of the GHS had trained contact tracing teams that included a medical laboratory scientist to collect the needed samples at no cost to anybody.

“If anyone comes to you with such a proposal, please ask for his or her identity card and report him or her to the nearest police station. The sample taking and testing are at no cost to anyone,” he added.

    Modus operandi

The alleged imposters call people on their mobile phones and tell them that they had been pencilled in for contact tracing and testing but the kit for the exercise had run out and demand between GH¢40 and GH¢65, through mobile money transfer, for the kit.

The reports were received from people residing at Gbawe, Kasoa, Adenta and Ashaiman, where some contact tracing exercises had been going on.

The GHS said it was going to investigate the matter and bring perpetrators to book.

    National update

The GHS, through its official website, has indicated that since the first case of COVID-19 was recorded on March 12, 2020, a total of 2,032 contacts traced had tested positive, out of the total national confirmed cases of 3,091, as of the morning of May 8, 2020.

  • U/E: COVID-19 may affect rice production in Builsa MoFA District Director

Mr Sylvan Dauda Danaa, the Builsa South District Director of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) in the Upper East Region, has said that COVID-19 might affect rice production in the area.

He said there is a need for intensive education if production is to increase.

According to him, even though there are plans to increase rice production in the District beyond the quantity produced last year, various concerns related to COVID-19 could cause many farmers, especially small scale farmers to downsize their production.

He added that many of the farmers in the area are of the view that if they increase their farming activities, they would contract the virus since they would have to engage more human labour on their farms.

He said Agriculture Extension Officers who are to engage the farmers, are often not well equipped with Personal Protective Equipment to enhance interaction.

Mr Danaa, who made the call in an interview in Bolgatanga, said: “If you have a Farmer Based Organisation of 30 people, you cannot meet them to transfer technology to them and this would, in turn, affect farming.”

The Director said there is the need for an emergency plan to handle the agricultural sector at this time of the pandemic as “farmers are scared to go to their farms because they mostly weed and apply fertilizers on their farms in groups.”

He said with the current protocol of social distancing, farmers who hitherto engaged large groups of labourers to work on their farms would be compelled to reduce the numbers which would affect production.

Mr Danaa said while monitoring farms in the District, “One of our farmers who by this time last year had cleared her land and started preparing for the season, had only cleared a little portion this time adding that she cannot farm on a large scale as she could be infected with the disease.”

“This clearly shows that the understanding of the farmer about the virus is different. The farmers need to know that they can still farm, but observe the COVID-19 protocols within their farms,” the Director said.

He said the District cultivated about 1,500 hectares of rice last year adding that “there is the possibility of us increasing because we have a potential of 4600 hectares that is yet to be developed for farming.”

Mr Danaa said but for the COVID-19 pandemic, which may affect rice production, there is an opportunity for increased production this year, especially with the use of the improved seeds provided by the government.

Speaking on the availability of the market for the rice if production is increased despite the pandemic, the Director said, “What happened last year, has led some organisations to see the need to buy the rice from our fields”.

“Aside that, government strategy would be put in place to support the market of the produce. We will also be available to link some of our farmers to markets outside and within the region. So with that, I think the marketing will not be much of a problem.”

  • 8 Hospital Staff infected with Coronavirus in Upper East Region -GHS

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) in the Upper East Region says the high infection rate among health professionals at the Regional hospital has the potential to interrupt routine service delivery.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Bolgatanga, on the impact of the infection rate of staff of the Regional hospital on service delivery, Mr Zakariah Yakubu, the Head of Administration at the facility disclosed that a total of eight staff from the hospital were infected.

He said before the results of staff that came in contact with confirmed patients were released, they were under self-quarantine for two weeks, Mr Yakubu said patient attendance to the hospital was generally low, “Work will continue as normal with more precaution. We have started mass testing for staff,” he added.

According to a current COVID-19 situation report from the GHS in the Region, seven persons turned out positive out of 168 samples that were tested after the last update, representing 4.2 percent.

Six people out of the seven new cases are contacts of a previously confirmed case while one was from routine surveillance which puts the total case count for the Region at 26, with 2 deaths.

The report indicated that the second death in the Region was recorded in the Bawku Municipality on April 26, 2020, the same day a sample from the patient was taken for laboratory investigation, adding that the deceased had a co-morbid condition.

Five Districts, namely the Bolgatanga, Bawku, Kassena-Nankana Municipalities, the Bawku West and Pusiga Districts have recorded cases of the virus, “Thirteen (13) cases are currently on admission. They are all stable and responding to treatment. Six of the seven cases are being prepared for admission,” the report said.

Apart from the 33year old pregnant woman who fully recovered and was discharged, the report said three additional patients also fully recovered after two successive negative tests were conducted, which brings the total recovery cases in the Region to four including one patient who was translocated to Accra.

From the report, 26 samples of suspected persons and contacts from the Bawku Municipality were sent for laboratory investigation, four out of the number turned out positive, and 18 were negative while four are pending.

The Bawku West District had six samples from suspected persons and contacts, one turned out positive, and four were negative, with one pending, while the Binduri and Bolgatanga East Districts had one and two suspected cases respectively which all turned out negative.

  • Consider online adjudication in the midst of COVID-19 Judge

Professor Justice Sir Dennis Adjei, a Justice of the Court of Appeal, has suggested that the Judicial Service considers authorising the conduct of some trials through electronic platforms and internet-based applications as a stop-gap measure to the fight of Covid-19.

Professor Justice Sir Dennis Adjei made the call when he delivered via Zoom, the maiden lecture of the 14-week long Law and Ethics Web Series, on the theme: “Covid-19, Legal Practice and its implications for Judicial Decision Making”.

The lecture is being jointly organised by the African Centre on Law and Ethics (ACLE) and the African Centre of International Criminal Justice (ACICJ), both based at the GIMPA Faculty of Law.

Prof Justice Sir Adjei said, “Doctors are working, Engineers are working, Lecturers are teaching online, so Judges too must deliver and the Courts must work.”

“In the phase of Covid-19, every institution must work but we must observe physical distancing and where you can use internet facility to achieve the purpose of your work, you must use it.”

The Justice of the Court of Appeal said there were few laws on the statute books of Ghana that would have to be amended to accommodate his suggestion of online adjudication of court cases.

“We should look at Order 33 of CI 47, which requires the Court to provide for a place of trial. It could be amended to include any other electronic mode that the Court may determine and not a physical place as in the courtroom,” he indicated.

“Order 36 of the High Court civil procedure rules, CI 47, which requires parties to attend a trial in person and failure of which attracts sanctions could also be amended to make video link or any other digital means to amount to physical appearance”.

The Law and Ethics Web Series is expected to be held every Wednesday at 1400 hours, which began May 6, this year, on the online meeting platform; Zoom.

There are pending presentations on May 13, May 20, May 27, June 3, June 10, June 17, June 24, July 1, July 8, July 15, July 22, July 29, and August 5, which will come on as scheduled.

Various speakers have been lined up for the series.

It is being coordinated by Dr Kwaku Agyeman-Budu, a Lecturer and Head of Law Centre at the GIMPA Faculty of Law.

The maiden session was moderated by Ms Diana Asonaba Dapaah, also a Lecturer at the GIMPA Faculty of Law, under the distinguished patronage of the Rector of GIMPA, Professor Philip Ebow Bondzi-Simpson.

  • Upper West: NDC demands justice for murdered chairman

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is blaming the Ghana Police Service for delaying in their investigations to unravel the circumstances that led to the gruesome murder of the late Daffiama-Bussie-Issah (DBI) constituency chairman of the party, Richard Bayiviala Polibon.

The late Richard Bayiviala Polibo was murdered at gunpoint exactly a year ago while returning from a funeral in his constituency.

According to the Upper West Regional Organiser of the NDC, Issahaku Nuhu Putiaha, the chairman and his driver were stopped by four men but his driver, upon realizing they were armed, tried to speed off.

He said one of the armed men shot the chairman in his head, killing him instantly.

Police mounted investigations and announced a bounty for anyone with information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators of the heinous crime.

In a commemorative press statement issued and signed by the Daffiama-Busie-Issa constituency secretary of the NDC, James Wor, the party said, “One year on and justice has since not been served. It is a very grievous precedent in the Region. We still demand justice from our security agencies. We need to be told the state of investigation and efforts put in place to bring the perpetrators to book. It is said that justice delayed is justice denied.”

While dedicating the month of May in remembrance of the late chairman, the statement urged his family and the NDC fraternity to continue to keep calm and pray for the soul of late Chairman.

It said, “We will continue to demand justice for him until the security wake up from their slumber”.

Citi News contacted the Upper West regional police command but they declined to comment at the time of filing this report.

  • Chorkor residents demand apology from Ursula Owusu after bridge accusations

Some Chorkor residents are demanding an apology from the MP for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful for what they feel were accusations that they sabotaged the floating bridge on the Chemu lagoon she commissioned.

This after the bridge was swept away during a downpour two weeks ago.

The MP, responding to the bridge being washed away in a tweet, said it was deliberately destroyed by “nation wreckers” without making reference to anyone in particular.

But the residents have taken offence and argued that the bridge was not even fit for purpose hence it being carried away.

Speaking to Citi News, the Assemblyman for the Chorkor electoral area, Theophilus Isaac Quaye, insisted that there was no human factor in the collapse of the bridge.

He urged the MP to “go back to her drawing board to make some correction and therefore finally render an unqualified apology to the people of Chorkor. It is rather unfortunate that the MP is turning to blame only the people of Chorkor.”

Some of the residents supported the assertion of the Assemblyman.

One of them remarked that “you [Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful] have the guts to come and insult us on top. It is not fair. We want her to come and apologise to us.”

The chairman of the Chorkor Ghana Private Road Transport Union, Ransford Ayitey, however, highlighted the economic toll of the absence of the bridge.

He said the inability of individuals to easily move from one side of the lagoon to the other was affecting their businesses.

“For now, even three cars or four cars cannot be loaded so we are pleading to the government.”

  • Africa Academy of Science institutes $2.8million COVID-19 research fund

The Africa Academy of Science (AAS) and its partners have mobilized a total of $2.8million to support key research priority areas across the African continent to help contain the spread of COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.

The priority research areas were identified by 844 researchers in the field of biomedical science, clinical, epidemiology, social science, policymakers, and infectious disease through a survey organised by the AAS on COVID-19.

Madam Juliette Mutheu-Asego, the Head of Communications and Public Relations at AAS, speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview said the Academy would in the coming days issue a call to invite researchers to apply to the funds to conduct studies in the priority areas.

The key research areas, she stated included; understanding the effectiveness of movement control strategies to prevent secondary transmission in health care and community settings, develop new Personal Protective Equipment approaches using local materials and manufacturing processes.

She said the study flagged high the issues of researching into the conduct of rapid population cross-sectional surveys to establish the extent of virus transmission using a standardized sampling framework.

Madam Mutheu-Asego said the survey recommended a special focus should be given to potentially at-risk groups including; malnourished individuals and people with HIV, TB Sickle Cell.

She said it highlighted the development of protocols for the management of severe disease in the absence of intensive care facilities, determine optimal clinical practice strategies to improve the processes of care, and develop innovative approaches to use as alternatives to ventilation.

The survey conducted in April, she noted flagged the examining of optimal ways of communicating about potential interventions in high-density low socio-economic status urban settings and ensures that knowledge was produced according to local, national and regional needs.

The African Academy of Sciences, she said recognizes the speed and urgency that was required to build a scientific body of knowledge required to inform current outbreak mitigation policies.

“Bearing in mind the limited time and resources available, the AAS is developing a credible research and development advisory that informs a coherent response backed by robust priorities for the continent to be ahead of the Covid-19 pandemic,” she noted.

The initiative was to complement the work of the World Health Organisation and recently established Africa TaskForce for Novel Coronavirus under the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention that seeks to oversee preparedness and response to COVID-19.

Professor Kwadwo Koram, the Immediate past Director of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) said the findings of the survey were curial to containing and reducing the spread of the pandemic.

He said a priority area such as ascertaining the transmission dynamics of COVID-19 and understand the spread of disease nationally and regionally was on the radar of NMIMR and needed funding to undertake a study in that area.

Prof Koram noted that with the needed support, a study could be done to describe the severity and susceptibility of the disease to facilitate effective clinical and public health response to COVID-19 identify groups at high risk of severe infection.

He recalled that scientists NMIMR and West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens both at the University of Ghana have obtained information about the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic that has affected many countries globally.

The breakthrough would enable scientists to understand how the genome works how genes work together to direct the growth, development, and maintenance of an entire organism.

How coronavirus is crippling the beauty industry in Ghana

  • Coronavirus peak: Stop ‘disrespecting’ us, we ain’t shallow minded – Pratt fumes

Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr says health experts and leaders in the country should spare the ears of Ghanaians about the disease having reached its peak and likely to go down.

Despite the number of high cases recorded in Ghana, health experts and leaders maintain that the country has reached the peak of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) infection curve.

We’ve peaked but not out of the woods

Dr Ebenezer Badu Sarkodie, the Director of Public Health, Ghana Health Service (GHS), on Thursday explained that Ghana attained its highest confirmed cases of COVID-19 on April 25, 2020, indicating its peak period.

He, however, added that this doesn’t mean the country is “out of the woods” and so entreated Ghanaians to keep following laid-down protocols to curb the pandemic.

    Facts don’t support claims

Touching on the COVID-19 pandemic issue on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, Kwesi Pratt stated that the data and facts don’t support claims of the disease likely to dwindle.

Referring the leaders to the current case count which has shot up to over 4,000, he asserted that there is no way the country is going to experience a downward trend in transmissions since the health centres are about to even undertake daily testing of the virus to find out new community infections.

    Stop the disrespect

He registered his disappointment in the country’s COVID-19 response team for suggesting that the disease will slow down and admonished them to stop taking Ghanaians for a ride.

”How do you tell me the disease is slowing down? We’ve moved from 1 to 2, 3 and even reached 3000 and beyond, then you come to tell me the disease is going down. Do you think I have a shallow mind?”

”…you come to stand before Ghanaians telling them the disease is diminishing, what should we tell you? It means you don’t respect us…if we are not doing daily testing, on what basis do you come to tell us this is going down?” he rhetorically asked.

Mr. Pratt feared a second wave of the pandemic will be extremely dangerous than the current wave in the country.

”It is most likely that there will be a second wave and that if you follow all pandemics of this nature, there is a second wave. And that the second wave is likely to be more devastating than the first wave. In fact, when you take a critical look at the flu pandemic, the second wave killed far more people even than the first wave and so on. If you’re faced with all these facts and our leaders keep deceiving us that we shouldn’t panic because the disease has reached its peak and so it’s coming down, coming down from where?” he questioned.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s COVID-19 cases have increased to 4012, according to the Ghana Health Service.

Per the update on Friday, May 8, 2020, the number of recoveries has risen to 323.

The death toll remains at 18.

This means over 900 cases have been recorded in less than 48 hours.

According to the statement on the GHS website, “over 50% of these cases were as a result of an outbreak in an industrial facility with 1,300 workers of which 533 have been confirmed positive. Over the same period, 20 more recoveries have been reported.

“Bono Region has recorded a case and thus 13 out of 16 regions have reported cases. Currently, the only regions with no confirmed cases of COVID-19 are the Savannah, Bono East and Ahafo regions.”

  • Ahafo REGSEC extends closure of market centers by two more weeks

Ahafo REGSEC extends the closure of weekly market centers for another two weeks and lifts ban on Pragia with strict measures.

A fortnight ago, the Ahafo Regional Security Council (REGSEC) in fraternization with Council of Ahafo Chiefs and Municipal District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) had an emergency meeting on how to prevent the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in the region.

In a unanimous decision, the REGSEC closed down all weekly market centers and banned the operations of all tricycles (Pragia) in the region. This decision affected all the six districts within the Ahafo enclave; the Tano North Municipality, Tano South Municipality, Asunafo North Municipality, Asutifi South District, Asutifi North District and Asunafo South District.

The two weeks closure and ban took effect from Monday, April 27, 2020 and is expected to expire on Monday, May 11, 2020.

Market women, consumers, Pragia riders and passengers are in a total pool of dilemma, whether there will be an extension or not.

With four thousand and twelve (4,012) cases, three hundred and twenty-three (323) recoveries and eighteen deaths in Ghana so far, the president of the Republic of Ghana, H. E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been commended globally on the fight against the deadly Coronavirus.

On Friday, May 8, 2020, the Ahafo Regional Security Council, MMDCs and all Paramount chiefs within the region held a meeting at the Ahafo Regional Coordinating Council.

The meeting was geared towards how to strengthen all the measures put in place to help the fight against the spread of the virus. So far, the region has not recorded a single case.

The closure of weekly market centers and ban on ‘pragia’ were not left aside. Upon a deeper deliberations on the closure of weekly market centers, the Deputy Ahafo Regional Minister who doubles as member of Parliament for Tano South, Hon. Benjamin Yeboah Sekyere briefed the media on behalf of Ahafo REGSEC on what necessitated the extension of the closure of weekly market centers and the lift of ban on ‘pragia’.

The Deputy Minister stated emphatically that, the REGSEC has been able to come out with some strict measures to control all the daily market centers in the region by ensuring proper social distancing and compulsory wearing of nose mask before entering the market place.

He further stated that, the ban on ‘pragia’ has been lifted up with strict measures on their operations while the closure of weekly market has been extended for another two weeks.

‘Aboboyaa’ riders are only permitted to carry goods only.

All Paramount Chiefs, security personnel and the entire REGSEC supported the call of the extension of the closure of all market centers.

Hon. Benjamin Sekyere laid an emphasized that, all ‘Pragia’ riders are to take two passengers only.

It is compulsory for all the riders and passengers to wear nose masks. The police service and task force shall ensure the enforcement. All commercial vehicle drivers are to wear mask too.

The REGSEC came into a consensus that, ‘pragia’ riders are to provide hand sanitisers and sanitise their passengers before they set off.

  • Vanessa Bryant sues LA police over Kobe crash site photos

Vanessa Bryant is suing the Los Angeles County sheriff’s department over unauthorized photographs of the scene at the helicopter crash that killed her husband, NBA legend Kobe Bryant, and their 13-year-old daughter Gianna.

People magazine obtained the legal claim filed on Friday in which Vanessa Bryant seeks damages for emotional distress and mental anguish in the wake of revelations that eight sheriff’s department deputies took graphic photos of the scene and shared them with others.

Kobe and Gianna Bryant were among nine people who died in the January 26 helicopter crash in the mountains west of Los Angeles.

According to the court filing obtained by People, “no fewer than eight sheriff’s deputies were at the scene snapping cell-phone photos of the dead children, parents, and coaches.

“As the Department would later admit, there was no investigative purpose for deputies to take pictures at the crash site. Rather, the deputies took photos for their own personal purposes.”

The only people authorized to take pictures of the scene were investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and the coroner’s office.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva acknowledged in March that deputies had taken photos of the crash scene, after the Los Angeles Times reported the existence of the pictures.

Entertainment news website TMZ.com reported then that a bartender had lodged a complaint after hearing a trainee sheriff’s deputy showing the images to a customer in a bar.

Villanueva said in March that the department had identified the deputies involved and ensured that the photos were destroyed so that they could not be circulated further.

At that time Vanessa Bryant asked for an internal affairs investigation and sanctions for all involved.

“Rather than formally investigate the allegations to identify the extent of dissemination and contain the spread of the photos, Department leadership reportedly told deputies that they would face no discipline if they just deleted the photos,” the filing reads, according to People.

The legal claim also states that Vanessa Bryant has been made aware that some of the photos have surfaced on the internet.

“This (lawsuit) solely is about enforcing accountability, protecting the victims and making sure no one ever has to deal with this conduct in the future,” a spokesperson for the Bryant family told People.

  • Rapper Tekashi69 smashes Instagram live record with post-prison boast

Fresh out of prison and in home confinement, rapper Tekashi69 destroyed the Instagram live viewership record, as two million users watched him sound off, diss the haters and promote a new song.

It was a birthday party rant of sorts for the braggadocious star who turned 24 Friday, weeks after his early release from prison due to the rapidly spreading coronavirus.

Tekashi was sentenced in December to two years in prison on racketeering, firearms and drug trafficking charges. He is serving the remainder of his sentence, up in August, under government surveillance at home.77

That didn’t stop the artist known for his face tattoos and technicolor braids from jumping on Instagram to push his first post-prison track “Gooba,” while flaunting his jaw-dropping testimony against former gang associates.

“Y’all could never cooperate with the government and come back — I’m a living legend,” the blinged-out rapper said as viewership of the live hit the two million mark.

He shattered previous Instagram records held by Drake and Tory Lanez, who amassed over 310,000 viewers in March, and an R&B battle between Babyface and Teddy Riley that pulled in some half a million last month.

“A rat like me to come home and do more numbers than you? I would be mad too,” said Tekashi, whose lawyer had dubbed him a “target” for reprisal attacks from associates furious that he “snitched” in court.

The young American rapper born Daniel Hernandez received a lenient sentence after agreeing to a plea deal that required him to take the stand against members of the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods.

The artist pinned his fame — he went viral after release of his debut single “Gunmo” in late 2017 — to street cred over his gang involvement.

He rapped with Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods wearing trademark red bandanas in the video for “Gunmo” — but turned on his former associates as a star witness in the sweeping trial.

During three days of testimony Tekashi casually detailed everything from gang attacks to the organization’s leadership web and the gang affiliations of other rappers including Jim Jones and Cardi B.

His cooperation spared him a possible life sentence.

The notion of witness protection was floated considering the furor his testimony stoked among gangs — but Tekashi appears set on picking up where he left off.

This week, a giant billboard with his image went up in Times Square — deserted as most of New York is ordered to stay home amid the pandemic — to promote “Gooba” and its accompanying video that sees him show off his ankle bracelet.

In his rant Tekashi defended his decision to cooperate with federal authorities and thanked the judge for letting him come home.

He closed the record-breaking live by saying that “I appreciate every little thing and i didn’t do nothin’ wrong.”

“I didn’t need all that beef,” before returning to his confident airs with an expletive flex: “I’m the biggest artist in the… world.”

  • Trump savors ‘witch hunt’ vindication after charges against ex-aide Flynn dropped

President Donald Trump claimed sweeping vindication Friday over the Russian election meddling investigation that he has long branded a hoax and a witch hunt, after the Justice Department dropped its prosecution of his former national security advisor Michael Flynn.

Attorney General Bill Barr’s deeply controversial declaration that there were never grounds to pursue Flynn, a central target in the Russia investigation, and that the FBI abused its powers, drew outrage across much of the legal community.

But it delivered to Trump a powerful victory in his three-year campaign to convince Americans that the probe was a political inquisition designed to delegitimize his presidency.

“Most people knew from the beginning, and they knew it was just a total hoax. It was a made-up story, a disgrace to our nation,” Trump told Fox News.

“They tried to take down the President of the United States, a sitting, duly elected President of the United States before I even won,” he said.

    Ammunition against Biden

Coming six months before he stands for reelection, Barr’s move offered powerful ammunition that Trump indicated he would use against his Democratic opponent Joe Biden, who was vice president under president Barack Obama when the original FBI investigation began in July 2016.

“These are dirty politicians and dirty cops and some horrible people. And hopefully they’re going to pay a big price some day in the not too distant future,” Trump said of all those involved in the Russia probe.

“If anyone thinks that (Obama) and Sleepy Joe Biden didn’t know what was going on, they have another thing coming” he said.

“I believe he and Biden… (were) involved in this all, very much.”

    Secret Russia talks

By closing the case on Flynn, Barr was plunging a knife into the heart of the justification for Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into alleged Trump campaign collusion with Russia.

When completed, Mueller detailed numerous contacts between the Trump campaign and Russia which suggested collusion but did not add up to a crime.

Mueller’s probe, which led to convictions or guilty pleas by five other trump associates, had cast a cloud over Trump’s 2016 upset election victory and riveted the nation for two years.

Mueller detailed nearly a dozen acts of alleged obstruction by Trump, but his report neither exonerated the president nor concluded he had committed a crime.

But Barr, who was appointed attorney general in 2018 after supplying legal arguments to the White House against the Mueller investigation, declared that Mueller found no actionable wrongdoing.

By then, though, Flynn had already pleaded guilty to one count of lying to the FBI over his Russia contacts, and was facing sentencing.

The court had heard substantial evidence about his secret talks in December 2016 with Russia’s envoy to Washington to discuss deals that would undermine then-president Obama’s policy toward Moscow.

Yet in a nearly unheard-of reversal, on Thursday the Justice Department told the federal district court in Washington that Flynn’s guilty plea was moot, because the investigation was not justified to begin with.

“Our duty we think, is to dismiss the case,” Barr told CBS News.

“A crime cannot be established here. They did not have a basis for the counterintelligence investigation against Flynn.”

    ‘Purely corrupt’

Despite the evidence amassed by US intelligence and Mueller, Trump never accepted that Russia interfered to help him in 2016 and that he or his staff should have been investigated.

“You look at Mueller, that was purely corrupt,” Trump said of the special counsel, a former FBI director.

Trump declared victory on Friday, as he did earlier this year following his Senate acquittal after being impeached on separate charges related to Ukraine.

    Barr, however, took heavy criticism.

In a joint comment on the Lawfare website, legal experts called the Flynn move “astonishing”, “bizarre”, and “dishonest,” noting it was the second time in two months that Barr upended one of the remaining Mueller prosecutions.

Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, who oversaw the Russia investigation, said Barr’s move “has nothing to do with the facts or the law — it is pure politics designed to please the president,” he said.

The Democrat-led House Judiciary Committee called Friday for an investigation of Barr’s “politicization” of the Justice Department.

Americans “deserve a department that is guided by the facts and the law, and not by the president’s political interests.”

But conservative Berkeley law professor John Yoo wrote that dropping the Flynn prosecution was necessary to help clean up the FBI and Justice Department.

Yoo called it “an important step in restoring control over a law enforcement agency that believed it had a right to pick and choose who were acceptable leaders for our nation.”

  • US prevents UN Security Council vote on pandemic truce

The United States on Friday prevented a vote in the UN Security Council on a resolution calling for a ceasefire in various countries around the world so they can better fight the coronavirus pandemic, diplomats said.

“The United States cannot support the current draft,” the country’s delegation told the 14 other stunned members of the Security Council.

When asked for an explanation of the US move, a State Department official told AFP that China had “repeatedly blocked compromises that would have allowed the Council to move forward.”

Diplomats told AFP that the language used in the draft to describe the World Health Organization was behind the US move to prevent the vote.

Last month, US President Donald Trump announced he was suspending funding to the World Health Organization, accusing it of downplaying the seriousness of the outbreak to shield China.

On Thursday, Washington had accepted an implicit mention of the WHO in the UN text as a compromise.

Other sources said Washington wanted the Council to return to an initial draft of the resolution which highlighted the need for “transparency” in global cooperation in tackling the pandemic.

The procedure blocked by the United States would have allowed the sponsors of the resolution, France and Tunisia, to put it to a vote.

The latest version of the text — which has been the subject of tense negotiations since March, and was obtained by AFP — called for a cessation of hostilities in conflict zones to allow governments to better address the pandemic.

It called on all nations to “enhance coordination” in the virus fight.

It also highlighted the “urgent need to support all countries, as well as all relevant entities of the United Nations system, including specialized health agencies, and other relevant international, regional, and sub-regional organization.”

This wording, which implicitly refers to the WHO without explicitly mentioning it, was seen as a compromise that could win support from both the United States and China.

“In our view, the Council should either proceed with a resolution limited to support for a ceasefire, or a broadened resolution that fully addresses the need for renewed member state commitment to transparency and accountability in the context of COVID-19,” the State Department official said Friday.

The US is the largest contributor to the WHO, offering more than $400 million each year, which also goes to combat other diseases around the world including polio and malaria.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has been pushing for a cessation of hostilities around the world since March 23, urging all sides in conflict to lay down arms and allow war-torn nations to combat the coronavirus.

  • Venezuela charges Americans with terrorism, conspiracy

Venezuela has charged two former US soldiers with terrorism and conspiracy for allegedly taking part in a failed bid to topple President Nicolas Maduro, the attorney general said on Friday.

Luke Alexander Denman, 34, and Airan Berry, 41, were among 17 people captured by the Venezuelan military, which said it had thwarted an attempted invasion by mercenaries in the early hours of Sunday.

Attorney General Tarek William Saab said they had been charged with “terrorism, conspiracy, illicit trafficking of weapons of war and (criminal) association,” and could face 25-30 years in prison.

Eight attackers were reportedly killed in the incident.

Saab said Venezuela had requested an international arrest warrant for the capture of former US army medic Jordan Goudreau, who allegedly organized and trained the mercenary force.

Maduro has accused President Donald Trump of being behind the alleged invasion — and Saab said Friday the Venezuelans involved would be tried for “conspiracy with a foreign government.”

Trump has roundly rejected the accusation, telling Fox News on Friday: “If I wanted to go into Venezuela I wouldn’t make a secret about it.”

“I’d go in and they would do nothing about it. They would roll over. I wouldn’t send a small little group. No, no, no. It would be called an army,” he said. “It would be called an invasion.”

Venezuela said on Monday it had arrested the two former US special forces soldiers and on Wednesday Maduro, who showed the pair’s passports on state television, said they would be tried.

The US army has confirmed they were former members of the Green Berets who were deployed to Iraq.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the US government would “use every tool that we have available to try to get them back.”

    – Bay of Pigs ‘remake’ –

Maduro described the raid as a “remake” of the failed 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion, when Cuban exiles covertly financed and directed by the US government attempted to overthrow then Cuba leader Fidel Castro.

Announcing the arrests, Saab said Venezuela’s opposition leader Juan Guaido, who is backed in his challenge to Maduro’s authority by the United States and more than 50 other countries, was behind the mission.

Saab accused Guaido of signing a $212 million contract with “hired mercenaries” using funds seized by the US from the state oil company PDVSA.

On Friday the attorney general said arrest warrants had also been requested for US-based Venezuelans Juan Jose Rendon and Sergio Vergara.

Rendon, an advisor to Guaido, admitted in an interview with CNN that he had signed a contract with Silvercorp USA, a private security firm founded by Goudreau.

The Iraq and Afghanistan veteran admitted the existence of the operation in a video and claimed Silvercorp was contracted by Venezuela’s opposition.

In the video, Goudreau showed what he claimed was a contract signed by Guaido, whose press team denied the allegation.

He also told The Washington Post that he hired Denman and Berry as “supervisors” and had known them for years.

Rendon told CNN the contract was “exploratory” and that no green light was given to an operation in Venezuela. He also denied Guaido was involved.

Despite the Venezuela regime’s accusations against Guaido, he has not been charged with anything.

  • COVID-19 patient recaptured after escaping from quarantine

A combined team of the Birim Central Municipal Health Directorate, the Oda police and the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) has recaptured a 27-year-old covid-19 patient who escaped from his confinement at Akwatia in the Denkyembuor District in the Eastern Region last week.

Kwame Oduro was recaptured last Saturday at Apam in the Central Region where he had taken refuge.

He has since been taken to the Kasoa Treatment Centre for quarantine and medication.

    Briefing

Briefing the Daily Graphic at Oda yesterday, the Birim Central Municipal Director of Health Services, Mr James Avoka, said the Denkyembuor District Taskforce on covid-19 spotted Oduro at a check point at Akwatia.

He said his temperature was found to be far above normal, so he was referred to the hospital where his sample was taken and later confirmed by the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research to be coronavirus positive.

    Lockdown

Mr Avoka said Oduro was among a number of people who fled Accra to Akwatia when the President announced the restrictions on movement in the city.

He said Oduro was confined to Akwatia by the Denkyembuor District Assembly under police supervision, while steps were being taken to send him to Accra for quarantine and medical treatment.

Mr Avoka said on April 28, 2020, the policeman guarding him sought shelter at the nearby barracks when it threatened to rain, but on his return he realised that Oduro had escaped.

He said through investigations, the police tracked him to a village near Akwatia and later Oda and Akyem Aboabo.

They caused announcements to be made on radio stations in Oda that whoever was harbouring the suspect should send him to the BNI Divisional Office at Oda.

He said Oduro escaped to Apam when he heard the announcements.

He said the Oda BNI collaborated with its counterpart at Apam and that led to Oduro being recaptured at his hideout in the community last Saturday.

  • CNN: A solar-powered hand-washing basin encourages personal hygiene in Ghana amidst coronavirus

On the morning of March 30 after government officials issued a two-week lockdown to control the spread of Covid-19 in Ghana, a leather shoemaker based in the Ashanti region’s capital city, Kumasi, stared at a recycled barrel and conceived an idea.

“My brother (Jude Osei) and I decided we would create a basin to encourage regular hand-washing etiquette,” Richard Kwarteng, 32, told CNN.
They created a solar-powered hand-washing basin. In one of the first of its kind in the country, they wanted the device to be solar-powered and timed with a sensor, in accordance with the 20-second hand-washing guidance issued by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

    Getting supplies

They had less than 48 hours to gather supplies before the lockdown took effect. Without hesitation, they headed to a local market for supplies. On the shopping list: a sink, a faucet, a motherboard, a solar panel, a sensor, and an alarm.
When they got home, Kwarteng called a friend and electrician, Amkwaah Boakye, to handle the wiring before the brothers programmed the device to release soapy water when hands or other items came in contact with a sensor stored underneath the faucet. After 25 seconds, an alarm goes off indicating hand-washing is complete, then water is released to rinse hands before drying. The team began and finished the project in five days.
Osei recorded a video of Kwarteng demonstrating how to use the device and posted it on social media. It immediately went viral. “It was amazing to see the shares and likes,” said Kwarteng. “We started getting calls left and right. We were so proud of ourselves,” he added.

In less than two days, Ghana’s Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation contacted the brothers and a meeting has been scheduled to determine if additional machines can be manufactured and placed in cities throughout the country, said Kwarteng.
In an address to the nation in early April, President Akufo-Addo commended the men and acknowledged that the “Ghanaian sense of enterprise and innovation is beginning to be felt.”
Kwarteng says he plans to help stop the spread of the virus by making the device available throughout the continent.
“I pray this pandemic will go away and there are better days ahead,” he said. “We hope this will help people to practice normal hand-washing etiquette and we are very grateful for everyone’s support.”
Ghana currently has more than 3,000 cases of the coronavirus. The invention comes at a time when the global pandemic has begun to pummel parts of Africa, infecting over 53,000 people. Globally, more than 3.9 million people have contracted the virus. At least 274,000 people have died.

  • Coronavirus: Government should enlist churches to educate Ghanaians – Psychologist

Professor Joseph Osafo, Head of Psychology Department of the University of Ghana, has called on government to engage religious leaders in giving public education on the novel Coronavirus pandemic.

According to the professional psychologist, many Ghanaians have reposed confidence in their pastors and take their word as the finality of an issue.

He recounted ridiculous spiritual directions by some Pastors to their congregants and followers which have no scientific basis and not proven to be efficacious medication for the treatment of Coronavirus or any disease.

He alluded to a recent spiritual directive by a Pastor that people should search their bibles and will find a feather that will miraculously cure Coronavirus and other unsubstantiated claims given by some religious leaders to have medicinal properties.

Professor Joseph Osafo, speaking on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, noted that Pastors and churches have a major influence on their members to the extent that the members turn to them for all medical advice instead of consulting health Professionals.

“In one city in Accra in Ghana, over 25% of them called their Pastors and asked them for prayer, and even asked their Pastors what they should do. So, you can imagine if the Pastor who believes in taking medicine, he will tell you to stay home and pray. The role they play is a critical role. Some Pastors even tell their members not to undergo surgery for reason being that they will die if they do and directs them to rely on his prayer meanwhile the person is deteriorating,” he recounted.

He appealed to government to enlist some genuine faith-based institutions to help in educating Ghanaians on the impact of the pandemic and the seriousness in strictly adhering to the health instructions to prevent the spread of Coronavirus in the country.

He believed the religious leaders are a part of “frontline workers” and their role is crucial to the fight against the pandemic.

“. . In fact, they’re a major source of health information now . . . And under pandemics, what you want to avoid is miscommunication, rumors, unvalidated claims. You want to avoid that because it can make people react towards health workers. They will not even disclose if someone is infected. They will keep it. So, some of them are calling on their Pastors . . . people were calling their Pastors. They never called medical Doctors. So, they’re major tools for health information and the government should look at very organized churches and resource the Pastors. It is even a WHO policy recommendation that you work with faith-based organizations,” he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi.

  • CIKOD urged to lead research into Indigenous immune building fruits

Sir Dr Edward Gyaderi, a retired Surgeon has appealed to the Center for Indigenous Knowledge and Organizational Development (CIKOD) to lead research into finding out indigenous fruits in northern Ghana that can help build a strong human immune system.

He said this would enable the people to depend on their local fruits to boost their immune system against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sir Dr Gyaderi who said this during CIKOD’s Community COVID-19 support sensitization for Traditional Authorities in the Nandom Municipality, noted that fruits such as orange, banana, and avocado pear among others were not locally grown in the north, hence, were not affordable and easily accessible to the ordinary rural folks.

He said in the North, wild fruits were abundant with unknown nutritional values, stressing that a study that would expose the nutritional values of these wild fruits to the people would be highly appreciated.

On the COVID-19 pandemic, Sir Dr Gyaderi who is also a former member of the Council of State lauded CIKOD for its decision to empower Chiefs to lead the community sensitization against the global pandemic.

“When Chiefs and Queen mothers speak to their subjects in their language, they will understand and willing to comply”, he said.

The renowned Surgeon stressed on the fact that the disease had no cure yet, adding that the best alternative now was to educate the populace on how to protect themselves.

“We are fighting a world war, an enemy we cannot see and we must be innovative in our approaches”, he said.

Sir Dr Gyaderi explained that the handwashing with soap under running water was important because “the coronavirus was covered by a thin layer of fat and if you do not use soap or alcohol-based hand sanitizer, you cannot dissolve it”.

He appealed to the chiefs to take the message and endeavor to preach it to their Community people to protect them.

Mr Daniel Banuoku, Deputy Executive Director of CIKOD-North noted that the COVID-19 pandemic had exposed the weaknesses of many countries and they must begin to rethink the kind of priorities they set for themselves as nations.

He said in times such as these, required internal innovation because no one country could rely on the other to come and solve its problems, stressing that countries that would fail to come up with innovations to fight the pandemic would suffer grievous consequences.

He said the implementation of the COVID-19 community support project goal was to strengthen the capacities of local and traditional authorities in the Lawra and Nandom Municipalities in the Upper West Region for them to provide effective leadership in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic in their respective Communities.

Mr Banuoku noted that the project would among other things inaugurate community COVID-19 volunteers in eight communities to help enforce national protocols at the local level as well as distribute sanitation and hygiene materials to eight communities and traditional authorities.

The 20,000.00 dollar project is being implemented by CIKOD and Groundswell International with funding from the 11th Hour Project.

  • IMF: Previous warnings of global economic contraction too optimistic

The Head of the International Monetary Fund said Friday that previous estimates for the world economy to contract by three percent this year were too optimistic.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, during a video-linked conference in Florence, said that worsening indicators in some countries could weigh even further on this forecast.

“Incoming economic data for many countries is below our already pessimistic assessment for 2020,” Georgieva said. “And with no immediate medical solutions, more adverse scenarios might unfortunately materialise for some economies”.

In April, the IMF warned that the world economy would experience the worst downturn since the Great Depression.

Provided the pandemic were to lessen in intensity in the second half of 2020, however, global growth would rebound by 5.8% in 2021, representing a partial recovery, the IMF said last month.

“The unknown behaviour of the virus is clouding the horizon for projections,” Georgieva said on Friday.

“Assuming that we will have treatments and vaccines by early 2021 at the latest, then we can expect a recovery,” she said, cautioning that testing and tracing would have to be on a much larger scale than current efforts.

The coronavirus pandemic has killed more than 270 000 people worldwide, nearly 85 percent of them in Europe and the United States, since it appeared in China in December, according to AFP tracking.

  • Coronavirus has given us an opportunity to expand health infrastructure – Majority Leader

Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has suggested the outbreak of the coronavirus has exposed the deficit in health infrastructure of the country and at the same time, provided us with an opportunity to close the gaps.

The legislator who is also the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs told Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that the decision by the government to construct 88 new district hospitals and six new regional hospitals within a year is not a political gimmick as opined by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mr Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu said we are faced with a health crisis that calls for a drastic approach and initiatives to help resolve the crisis.

President Akufo-Addo stated during his eighth Coronavirus address to the nation recorded and broadcast on TV that his administration would construct 88 district hospitals and 6 new regional hospitals.

Akufo-Addo indicated that each, of these district hospitals “will be a quality, standard-design, one hundred bed hospital, with accommodation for doctors, nurses and other health workers, and the intention is to complete them within a year.”

“We have also put in place plans for the construction of six new regional hospitals in the six new regions, and the rehabilitation of the EffiaNkwanta Hospital, in Sekondi, which is the regional hospital of the Western Region.

“We are going to beef up our existing laboratories and establish new ones across every region for testing. We will establish three infectious disease control centres for each of the zones of our country, i.e. Coastal, Middle belt and Northern, with the overall objective of setting up a Ghana Centre for Disease Control,” he promised.

He has been widely criticised for his plan with some saying it is unachievable.

However, Mr. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has disagreed stressing this is an opportunity for the nation to expand its health infrastructure.

“This is a good opportunity for us to expand our health infrastructure. It is unwise to politicise this,” he said.
