  • Senegal eases coronavirus restrictions as cases rise

Senegal is easing coronavirus restrictions starting Tuesday, including reopening of mosques and churches.

Mosques are now allowed to reopen for prayers during the holy month of Ramadan, and churches will also be allowed to accept worshippers.

The nighttime curfew has also been reduced by two hours and will now run from 21:00 to 05:00 local time.

Markets and businesses, which have only been allowed to open a few days a week during the lockdown, will now only need to be closed for a day’s cleaning each week.

In a televised address late on Monday, President Macky Sall said that Senegalese would need to “adapt individual and collective behaviour” and “learn to live with the virus”.

The announcement came as the country recorded 177 new cases on Monday, the highest jump in a single day since the first case was recorded on 2 March.

Senegal has so far recorded 1,886 coronavirus cases in total, including 19 deaths.

The new measures come amid a push to find a way to balance public health with economic realities, with the virus causing loss of jobs and a slowdown in activity in the continent.

  • Stonehenge solstice gathering axed over virus

This year’s summer solstice celebrations at Stonehenge in southern England have been cancelled because of the ban on mass gatherings prompted by the Coronavirus.

Traditionally about 10,000 people gather at the Neolithic monument in Wiltshire, on or around 21 June, to mark midsummer.

English Heritage said it was cancelling the event “for the safety and wellbeing of attendees, volunteers and staff”.

The occasion will instead be live-streamed on the charity’s social media accounts.

  • Germany’s declining infection rate

Here’s a graph of Germany’s cases from the country’s official institute for infectious diseases.

The yellow bars show the number of reported cases, the blue ones only the onset of symptoms. The occasional sudden drops are usually on a Monday because of delayed weekend data.

The easing of the lockdown began on 20 April, when the country allowed small shops to reopen.

In the following weeks, some schools began allowing some pupils to return to class. Since then, the country’s different states have eased measures further – with some even allowing restaurants and bars to open.

While numbers of new infections have fallen below 1,000, and remain way down on their peak, worries remain that easing restrictions will drive infections up again.

The latest figures from Germany, not on the chart, show a daily rise of 933 cases.

  • Premier League clubs face £340m bill

Premier League clubs have been told they could have to repay an estimated £340m to domestic and international broadcasters – even if the season resumes behind closed doors.

And BBC Sport has learned the clubs were warned on Monday that figure could rise if the season is curtailed or if relegation is scrapped.

Meanwhile, No professional sport, even behind closed doors, will be staged in England until 1 June at the earliest, the UK government has announced.

The British Grand Prix is under threat this year because of a financial stand-off between Formula 1 and Silverstone.

English and French clubs have written to World Rugby in a bid to be formally involved in the establishment of a new rugby union schedule post-coronavirus

  • Japanese baseball to resume in June

Japan’s baseball league is due to begin in June, after it had been delayed from March by the pandemic.

“The 12 teams agreed to make efforts so that the season can start in the latter half of June, on the condition that all necessary preparations can be made while carefully monitoring the spread of the infection,” Atsushi Saito, commissioner for Nippon Professional Baseball, said in a statement.

Baseball is hugely popular in Japan, with even youth leagues getting television coverage.

Germany’s Bundesliga will be the first of the world’s top football leagues to resume playing this Saturday – also to empty stadiums.

  • Premier League to pursue home and away games if possible

The Premier League says it has listened to the objections of some clubs to the use of neutral grounds if the season resumes and will support them in putting those views to the authorities.

Chief executive Richard Masters said the organisation was in an “ongoing dialogue” with government, police and ground safety officials.

“Everybody would prefer to play at home and away if at all possible, and it’s clear to see some clubs feel more strongly about that than others,” he said after a shareholders’ meeting.

“We are in contact with the authorities and listening to that advice, while also representing club views in those discussions.”

He said “a really strong collective will to complete the season remains” but admitted that “curtailment” of the season was discussed for the first time at the meeting.

Two weeks ago clubs were told neutral stadiums were the only way the season could be completed, because authorities were concerned about fans congregating outside home grounds and breaching social distancing rules.

But at least six clubs are opposed to the proposal in the Project Restart plan, with Watford, Aston Villa and Brighton coming out publicly against it.

Those clubs now want the chance to show they can deliver home and away matches safely, and league bosses are behind them.

“Since Covid became an issue we’ve been talking to the authorities about the conditions in which we could get the Premier League back up and running and taking all that advice on board, but it is an ongoing dialogue,” said Masters, speaking for the first time since the season was suspended.

“But all must be cognisant of what authorities are telling us, and we’ll continue with that consultation.”

The government is understood to have “open ears” regarding neutral venues and is prepared to discuss the matter. However a final decision is likely to rest with the police and ground safety officials, who have to grant licences to venues.

Last week the head of the UK’s football policing unit, deputy chief constable Mark Roberts, said clubs opposed to neutral grounds should “get a grip”.

Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson also told the BBC he feared thousands of the club’s fans would gather outside Anfield to celebrate the title, even if matches were played at neutral venues.

However, recently retired West Yorkshire chief superintendent Owen West told the Guardian that the use of neutral stadiums had “no rationale”, and such a proposal was not being enforced in Germany where the Bundesliga hopes to resume this weekend.

Despite mounting tension and division over the use of neutral stadiums, Masters said Monday’s five-hour meeting showed a “strong desire to discuss everything in the round, and to agree a collective way forward”.

He insisted a “really strong collective will to complete the season remains”.

But he also admitted than a cancellation of the season was discussed for the first time.

“It’s the first time we’ve discussed curtailment,” he said. “It’s still our aim to finish the season obviously, but it’s important to discuss all of the options with our clubs.

“Obviously we won’t be playing until the middle of June. It doesn’t seem quite right to be talking about playing before we’ve taken a decision to return to the first stage of training.

“But in terms of how those matches will take place there’s a lot of water to pass under the bridge, and we’ll continue to assess the circumstances then.

“What was agreed today was that players can extend their contracts beyond 30 June, until the end of the season.

“It must be agreed by both parties and a later date can be scheduled for that, no later than 23 June so that date was pushed back a little to help with that situation.”

  • Shaquille O’Neal: NBA legend calls for season to be scrapped

Basketball great Shaquille O’Neal says the NBA should “scrap the season” because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The 2019-20 campaign was halted in March with five regular-season games and two months of play-offs remaining.

“Everybody go home, get healthy, come back next year,” said four-time NBA champion O’Neal, 48, who now works as a television pundit.

“To try and come back now and do a rush play-offs as a player? Any team that wins this year, there’s an asterisk.”

O’Neal added: “What if a team that’s not really in the mix of things all of a sudden wins with a new play-off format? Nobody is going to respect that.

“So scrap it. Worry about the safety of the fans and the people. Come back next year.”

With over 80,000 deaths and nearly 1.4m cases, the United States is the country most affected by the coronavirus crisis in the world.

A ‘bubble’ plan has been suggested by the NBA in which teams gather in a single area – such as the Bahamas, Disney World or Las Vegas.

Players would be housed in a secure area with testing to check for the virus.

But National Basketball Players Association executive director Michele Roberts says the option feels like “incarceration”.

O’Neal, who won the NBA title with the LA Lakers from 2000 to 2002 as well as with the Miami Heat in 2006, told USA Today: “I understand how players are feeling. I really do.

“But any team that gets it done this year, there’s going to be an asterisk on that championship. However long it takes for us to get 100% back to normal, I’m willing to wait.

“All it takes is one person. After the game, you’ve still got to go home. What if one person gets sick? Then we start from zero again.”

  • Qatar Airways CEO ‘surprised’ if travel demand recovers before 2023

The CEO of Qatar Airways says he will be “very surprised” if travel demand recovers before 2023/2024.

Akbar al-Baker also warned that many business travellers may never return, having become used to working remotely.

The airline has continued to operate throughout the pandemic, maintaining services to around 30 destinations.

Before the pandemic outbreak, it served 165 destinations. It aims to fly to 80 destinations by the end of June.

Al-Baker told Reuters news agency that he predicts the airline will be able to fill between 50% and 60% of seats. He said Qatar Airways will encourage passengers to keep a safe distance while onboard.

The airline announced on Monday that it is giving away 100,000 free return flights to healthcare staff around the world.

  • Premier League cleared to resume on June 1 after UK government publish 50-page post-lockdown plans

The government have published a 50-page document for lifting the coronavirus-enforced lockdown in England which could see the Premier League restart on June 1.

A guide for exiting the lockdown was released on Monday afternoon, with social distancing measures to remain in place as various activities are resumed across the country.

Step two of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s “roadmap” clears the way for the current football season get back underway next month, with all remaining fixtures set to be played behind closed doors until public safety can be guaranteed.

The new document has been titled ‘Our Plan to Rebuild: The UK Government’s Covid-19 Recovery Strategy’, and the lifting of restrictions is conditional upon the continued adherence to protocols which have been put in place to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Whether or not supporters will be able to attend matches before the end of the campaign remains unclear, as step three proposes a reopening of venues such as cinemas and hairdressers in July.

However it also includes the following warning: “Some venues which are, by design, crowded and where it may prove difficult to enact distancing may still not be able to reopen safely at this point, or may be able to open safely only in part.

“Nevertheless, the Government will wish to open as many businesses and public places as the data and information at the time allows.

“In order to facilitate the fastest possible reopening of these types of higher-risk businesses and public places, the Government will carefully phase and pilot reopenings to test their ability to adopt the new Covid-19 secure guidelines.

“The Government will also monitor carefully the effects of reopening other similar establishments elsewhere in the world, as this happens.

“The Government will establish a series of task forces to work closely with stakeholders in these sectors to develop ways in which they can make these businesses and public places Covid-19 secure.”

The document continues by stating that fans being granted access to stadiums over the summer “may only be fully possible significantly later depending on the reduction in numbers of infections”.

Some Premier League clubs have already voiced their concerns over ‘Project Restart’, with Aston Villa, Watford and Brighton anxious over the prospect of home advantage being taken out of the equation.

A number of players have also publicly expressed doubts over returning to the pitch, including Manchester City star Sergio Aguero and Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger, amid the continued rise of coronavirus cases in England.

Three Brighton players have been placed in self-isolation over the last week after testing positive for the illness, with Spain and Germany having similar issues as they attempt to reopen doors in La Liga and the Bundesliga.

  • Brexit: UK-EU trade talks resume ahead of June summit

Talks between the UK and EU over a post-Brexit trade deal will enter their third round later, ahead of a decisive summit next month.

Both sides are due to decide by the end of June whether the current deadline for negotiating an agreement should be extended beyond the end of December.

The UK has said it will not agree to an extension, even if the EU requests one.

The latest round of talks, to be held via video link, will end on Friday.

After the latest round in April, EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier said progress had been disappointing, whilst the UK said only “limited progress” had been made.

There are differences between the two sides on fisheries, competition rules, police co-operation, and how a deal would be enforced.

BBC Europe Editor Katya Adler said the EU accuses the UK of concentrating on its priorities whilst going slow on issues more important to the 27-member bloc.

She added that the UK wants to first settle a core trade deal alongside deals on aviation and energy, whilst the EU is keen to focus on fishing quotas and competition rules.

She added that although the UK has ruled out extending the talks, leaving tricky areas to the autumn could be risky if coronavirus infections peak again.

Negotiations have been held using video-conferencing technology since last month after face-to-face meetings were cancelled due to the pandemic.

The UK has rejected the suggestion it is not engaging in all negotiating areas, accusing the EU of making demands not required of its other trade partners.

Transition extension calls The UK is currently in a transition period under which it must follow most EU regulations, following its legal withdrawal from the bloc on 31 January.

Both sides exchanged legal text on a future trade deal in March. After the negotiations this week, a fourth round of talks is scheduled to begin on 1 June.

Under the UK’s withdrawal agreement with the EU, both sides currently have until 31 December to ratify a trade deal and rules for future co-operation.

An extension to the December deadline should be made by the UK-EU “joint committee” overseeing the agreement by 1 July.

Opposition parties including the Liberal Democrats and the SNP have both called on the UK government to extend the transition period beyond December.

Shortly after becoming Labour leader last month, Sir Keir Starmer said the UK should prolong talks beyond December if “necessary to do so”.

He added that the December deadline was “going to be very, very tight,” and he thought it “unlikely” the government would finish talks in time.

But the government insists it is committed to agreeing a deal by December 2020, and an extension would simply prolong disruption for businesses.

  • Coronavirus: Putin eases Russian lockdown as cases rise

Russian President Vladimir Putin says that from Tuesday the nationwide coronavirus lockdown will be eased and businesses will go back to work.

He said the country’s “non-working period” imposed to curb the virus had lasted six weeks.

The easing of restrictions will affect all sectors of the economy, Mr Putin said, but some regions may keep tighter controls if necessary.

Russia now has the third-highest number of confirmed infections worldwide.

In the last 24 hours it reported a record daily rise of 11,656 cases, bringing the official total to 221,344.

That means Russia now has more confirmed cases than both Italy and the UK. Only Spain and the US have reported more infections.

According to official figures, 2,009 people in Russia have died from the virus. But some question the low figure, and believe the tally is far higher.

    What did President Putin say?

In a televised address, the Russian leader announced an end to six weeks of countrywide restrictions, which he said had allowed the country to prepare its health system and save “many thousands of lives”.

“Starting from tomorrow, May 12, the national period of non-working days will be over for all sectors of the economy,” Mr Putin said. Individual regions however will be able to keep rules in place if needed.

Large public events remain banned and people must still follow “strict sanitation demands”, but it is in everyone’s interest for the economy “to return to normal quickly”, he said, adding that construction and farming should be among the first industries to restart.

The address comes just days after the mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, extended the capital’s lockdown until 31 May.

Though construction and industrial workers must now return to work in the city, everyone must wear face masks and gloves in shops and on public transport.

Residents still cannot leave home unless to shop, work or walk the dog, and must have a digital permit to travel.

Moscow is the epicentre of Russia’s outbreak, accounting for more than half the country’s official confirmed case and death totals.

Mr Sobyanin has however estimated that the capital may have more than 300,000 infections – about three times its confirmed tally of 115,909.

Over the weekend, Russia was forced to cancel its annual World War II Victory Day Parade due to the outbreak.

  • Africa HIV deaths ‘could rise by 500,000’ amid pandemic

More than half a million people in sub-Saharan Africa could die between now and next year from Aids-related illnesses amid the Covid-19 pandemic unless governments move to address the issue.

A modelling analysis done by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNAids shows that the impact of a six-month disruption of antiretroviral therapy could effectively set the clock back on Aids-related deaths to 2008, when more than 950,000 deaths were observed in the continent.

“The terrible prospect of half a million more people in Africa dying of Aids-related illnesses is like stepping back into history,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO director-general says.

UNAids executive director Winnie Byanyima warned that treatment could be interrupted, with HIV services closed or unable to supply antiretroviral therapy due to breakdown in the supply chain.

“It could even be because services simply become overwhelmed due to competing needs to support the Covid-19 response.

“There is a risk that the hard-earned gains of the Aids response will be sacrificed to the fight against Covid-19, but the right to health means that no one disease should be fought at the expense of the other,” Ms Byanyima said.

The WHO director-general said that countries need to ensure that those diagnosed with HIV are adhering to treatment and that testing services won’t be disrupted.

Some countries are already taking important steps, for example ensuring that people can collect bulk packs of treatment and other essential commodities, including self-testing kits, from drop-off points, which relieves pressure on health services and the health workforce.

“It will be important for countries to prioritise shoring up supply chains and ensuring that people already on treatment are able to stay on treatment” Dr Tedros added.

  • US accuses China of attempting to steal vaccine research

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation and cybersecurity experts believe Chinese hackers are trying to steal research on developing a vaccine against coronavirus, two newspapers reported Monday.

The FBI and Department of Homeland Security are planning to release a warning about the Chinese hacking as governments and private firms race to develop a vaccine for COVID-19, the Wall Street Journal and New York Times reported.

The hackers are also targeting information and intellectual property on treatments and testing for COVID-19.

US officials alleged that the hackers are linked to the Chinese government, the reports say.

The official warning could come within days.

In Beijing Foreign Affairs ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian rejected the allegation, saying China firmly opposes all cyber attacks.

“We are leading the world in COVID-19 treatment and vaccine research. It is immoral to target China with rumors and slanders in the absence of any evidence,” Zhao said.

The warning would add to a series of alerts and reports accusing government-backed hackers in Iran, North Korea, Russia and China of malicious activity related to the pandemic, from pumping out false news to targeting workers and scientists.

The New York Times said it could be a prelude to officially-sanctioned counterattacks by US agencies involved in cyber warfare, including the Pentagon’s Cyber Command and the National Security Agency.

Last week in a joint message Britain and the United States warned of a rise in cyber attacks against health professionals involved in the coronavirus response by organised criminals “often linked with other state actors.”

Britain’s National Cyber Security Centre and the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said they had detected large-scale “password spraying” tactics — hackers trying to access accounts through commonly used passwords — aimed at healthcare bodies and medical research organisations.

  • This dirty politics of discrediting government’s interventions must stop! – Kabilla

Acting General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), James Kwabena Bomfeh Jnr., appears displeased with the penchant by some politicians to discredit efforts and policies of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to resolve the current Coronavirus pandemic.

Kabila, as he is affectionately called, strongly held that such practice does won’t augur well for the growth of the nation.

According to him, it is a dangerous political trend and so called on his colleague politicians to stop the ”dirty politics”.

The CPP acting General Secretary was contributing to a panel discussion on ”Kokrokoo” on Peace FM’s on the COVID-19 scourge and matters arising.

”Equally dangerous and more serious was the attempt by some opposition elements to discredit everything government was doing. I was amazed…worse is or worse was and it continues till date the attempt that everything government was doing had to be discredited. I didn’t understand why but of course, I saw it was the usual NDC/NPP dirty politics that have associated our fourth Republican politics…it won’t augur well going forward”, Kabila stated.

  • Akufo-Addo appeals for endurance in COVID-19 fight

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has asked Ghanaians to intensify their adherence to the preventive measures put in place by the government to stop the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The president, while acknowledging the considerable difficulties the adherence to enhanced hygiene and social distancing protocols, the ban on public gatherings, and the closure of schools and borders may be for Ghanaians, noted that “we have no option but to stay the course.”

In his ninth COVID-19 address, Mr. Akufo-Addo said, “I know the difficulties each and every one of you has been through over the last two months.

“You have had to alter completely your way of life; you have had to stay at home, except for specified purposes; you cannot travel outside the country; you cannot go to Church, and you had to cancel activities usually associated with Easter; in this Holy Month of Ramadan, our Muslim brothers and sisters are having to pray at home, instead of congregating at the Mosque, and foregoing the public celebration of the Eid.”

“Parents are having to bear the extra burden of providing care for their children who, instead of being in school, are currently at home; operators of trotros, taxis, buses, markets, hotels, restaurants, bars and nightclubs have lost the patronage of their clients, and, as a result, lost much-needed incomes; significant numbers of people have, unfortunately, lost their jobs because of the impact of the virus on our economy; most of us want to hang out with our families, friends and loved ones in a social setting, but cannot.”

He, however, noted that Ghanaians can only guarantee the safety of each other if they continue to adhere to the measures.

He said obeying the measures would not only be of benefit to individuals, but to health workers who continue to be at the forefront of caring for those affected by the virus, and caring for the sick in general.

“As I have said before, these restrictions cannot and will not be a permanent feature of our lives, and, shortly, I hope to announce the steps for, systematically, easing the restrictive measures to bring us back to normality.

Each one of us, however, can help to speed up this process if we continue to practice the measures of social distancing, washing our hands with soap under running water, refraining from shaking hands, and, wearing our masks whenever we leave our homes.

These measures must be respected by all,” he added.

President Akufo-Addo nonetheless urged the police to continue in its enforcement of the preventive measures including the arrest and prosecution of persons, irrespective of their status in society, who flout the regulations.

“We cannot allow a few persons, for their narrow, selfish interests, to jeopardise the health, well-being and safety of the larger population.

“If you fall foul of the law, you will face its full rigours,” he stated.

  • Election 2020: We’ll compile new register under COVID-19 protocols EC

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has said it will observe all the necessary safety measures to curb the spread of Coronavirus when it begins compiling a new register of voters.

“All stakeholders are hereby reminded that plans are far advanced for the compilation of a new voter register with a new voter management system for the upcoming 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections”, the EC said in a statement on Monday, 11 May 2020 signed by Acting Public Affairs Director Sylvia Annor.

The Commission said it is “sensitive to the current state of affairs due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will abide by the necessary precautions and safety protocols in the execution of its mandate when it deems it appropriate to begin the compilation of the register”.

The exercise had been scheduled to start in April but has been put on ice indefinitely following the outbreak of Coronavirus in Ghana.

The EC’s statement was in response to a comment passed by Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, who castigated the Chair as running the election management body like an NGO.

  • Coronavirus: Strengthen observance of safety protocols Mahama

The flag bearer of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr John Dramani Mahama, has advised Ghanaians to strengthen the observance of the required safety protocols before admitting all persons including staff into their premises to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Mr Mahama further encouraged Ghanaians to wear a mask and ensure that all others do same.

“Handwashing with soap under running water must be mandatory for all, and have a queue manager to ensure appropriate physical distancing as clients wait for their turn. But as we have been advised, if you do not have anything essential doing, please stay home. Help protect yourself and your family,” Mr Mahama said in a Facebook post.

The former President also encouraged Ghanaians not to forget the vulnerable in society as the coronavirus has brought untold hardship on them.

Mr Mahama gave these pieces of advice as he visited some communities in Sukura and Nima in Accra on Sunday, 10 May 2020 to share food items to households to help ease their burden as a result of COVID-19.

  • Fire guts stores at the Navrongo main market

Fire has ravaged several stores at the Navrongo main market Monday night.

The inferno, which started at about 8pm, destroyed containers and other properties belonging to the traders.

Three large provision stores close to the smoked mudfish market, in the same vicinity with the Zambarima Pwekura, were completely destroyed before firefighters brought it under control.

The fire did not hurt any of the traders, but a young man who helped fight it sustained a deep cut in his right hand.

The cause was yet to be established but the store owners suspect an electrical fault sparked the fire.

The rapid response of the Ghana National Fire Service prevented the fire from spreading to other stores.

The incident has resurrected the conversation on the need for the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly to decongest all markets in the town to make them easily accessible in times of disaster.

  • Consider online adjudication in the midst of COVID-19 – Judge

Professor Justice Sir Dennis Adjei, a Justice of the Court of Appeal, has suggested that the Judicial Service considers authorising the conduct of some trials through electronic platforms and internet-based applications as a stop-gap measure to the fight of COVID-19.

Professor Justice Sir Dennis Adjei made the call when he delivered via Zoom, the maiden lecture of the 14-week long Law and Ethics Web Series, on the theme: “COVID-19, Legal Practice and its implications for Judicial Decision Making”.

The lecture is being jointly organised by the African Centre on Law and Ethics (ACLE) and the African Centre of International Criminal Justice (ACICJ), both based at the GIMPA Faculty of Law.

Prof Justice Sir Adjei said “Doctors are working, Engineers are working, Lecturers are teaching online, so Judges too must deliver and the Courts must work.”

“In the phase of Covid-19, every institution must work but we must observe physical distancing and where you can use internet facility to achieve the purpose of your work, you must use it.”

The Justice of the Court of Appeal said there were few laws on the statute books of Ghana that would have to be amended to accommodate his suggestion of online adjudication of court cases.

“We should look at Order 33 of CI 47, which requires the Court to provide for a place of trial. It could be amended to include any other electronic mode that the Court may determine and not a physical place as in the courtroom,” he indicated.

“Order 36 of the High Court civil procedure rules, CI 47, which requires parties to attend trial in person and failure of which attracts sanctions could also be amended to make video link or any other digital means to amount to physical appearance”.

The Law and Ethics Web Series is expected to be held every Wednesday at 1400 hours, which began May 6, this year, on the online meeting platform; Zoom.

There are pending presentations on May 13, May 20, May 27, June 3, June 10, June 17, June 24, July 1, July 8, July 15, July 22, July 29, and August 5, which will come on as scheduled.

Various speakers have been lined up for the series.

It is being coordinated by Dr Kwaku Agyeman-Budu, a Lecturer and Head of Law Centre at the GIMPA Faculty of Law.

The maiden session was moderated by Ms Diana Asonaba Dapaah, also a Lecturer at the GIMPA Faculty of Law, under the distinguished patronage of the Rector of GIMPA, Professor Philip Ebow Bondzi-Simpson.

  • Coronavirus: Tunisia records zero new cases

Tunisia recorded no new cases of Covid-19 for the first time since early March, health authorities said on Monday, as government announced it will further relax restrictions on movement and businesses.

The north African country which confirmed its first case on 2 March has reported 1,032 cases in total and 45 deaths.

The authorities say 745 patients have recovered and only 11 are still in the hospital.

Tunisia started relaxing a nationwide lockdown last week, reopening parts of the food, construction and transport sectors and allowing half of government employees to return to work.

Shopping malls, clothing stores and hairdressers are due to re-open on the 24 May.

The government said it expected the economy to shrink by up to 4.3%, the steepest drop since independence in 1956.

The key tourism sector could lose $1.4bn and 400,000 jobs this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, Reuters reports.

  • You would have been punished if you had endorsed Mahama – Manasseh to Justice Honyenuga

Investigative Journalist Manasseh Azure says Supreme Court nominee Justice Clemence Honyenuga would have been punished if he had praised John Mahama, like he did Akufo-Addo at a durbar of chiefs and people of the Afajato South District.

According to Manasseh, his endorsement of some achievements of the Akufo-Addo government is unacceptable irrespective of his position whether as a judge or a chief.

This comes after the Supreme Court Judge Nominee Justice Clemence Jackson Honyenuga revealed during his vetting in parliament today, that he did not endorse the presidency of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his personal capacity but did so on behalf of the chiefs and people of Afadjato when the President visited the Volta region.

Justice Clemence Honyenuga earlier this year, in his welcome address to President Akufo-Addo at a durbar of chiefs and people of the Afajato South District, was full of praise for the Akufo-Addo-led administration.

He is reported to have said “We wish to congratulate you for the excellent manner you are governing this dear country of ours, Ghana, and the significant gains made in the economy in your first term”, adding: “It is true that you have won high admiration, not only in Africa but also in advanced democracies.

“Your flagship programmes, like the Free Senior High School, Planting for Food and Jobs which has increased food production and has even led to exports; One District-One Factory, among others, has (sic) increased food production and has (sic) improved upon the standard of living of many Ghanaians”, he said.

“Indeed”, he added: “For special mention is the Free SHS, which has broken boundaries and has greatly bridged the gap between the rich and the poor”, observing: “This programme has also broken the record, which was held by the first President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, who gave free education to our brothers and sisters in the northern part of Ghana”.

The chief continued thus: “Your Free SHS programme is unprecedented in the history of Ghana, in a first term, as it covers the whole country”.

During the vetting of Justice Honyenuga who was being vetted in parliament said he only read the statement on behalf of the chiefs in the region. He however apologized to those who are unhappy with his statement.

“[For] my part, if out of political dissatisfaction, some people are unhappy with whatever I am supposed to have said, then I am sorry,” Justice Honyenuga told Parliament on Monday, 11 May 2020 while being vetted by the Appointments Committee.

Reacting to this on a Facebook Manasseh Azure said, the judicial service would have punished him if he had endorsed Mahama during a similar occasion.

“Whether as a judge or as a paramount chief, your endorsement of President Akufo-Addo was unacceptable! The Judicial Service would have punished you if you had endorsed Mahama.” He said

  • Minoritys claims on COVID-19 response plan are untrue and without basis Government

Government has rejected claims by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that it is giving Ghanaians “false hope” by hiding the actual figures about the spread of the Coronavirus infection and saying the country’s situation is under control.

Deputy Information Minister Pius Enam Hadzide, at a press conference in Accra on Friday, said the assertion by the NDC is false and without basis.

Contrary to the claims, Pius Hadzide said the NPP government had been swift and decisive with broader stakeholder consultations in the battle to defeat the flu-like coronavirus.

Pius Hadzide said government has defended its COVID-19 response by showing strong leadership and has been effective and transparent in its management of the pandemic.

At a press conference on Thursday, Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu accused government of not being forthright with the coronavirus figures in Ghana.

“Government should desist from selling false hope of a situation under control and using its management of information as a cover for this farce,” he stated.
He was of the view that it insults the intelligence of Ghanaians.

“We are at 3,000 and you say that we should wait, all is well. All was not well when we were at 200 and 300 (cases). How can it be well at 3000 (cases) and counting?” he queried.

The Minority Leader also claimed that science had been relegated to the background by the President, who is instead relying on signs and wonders.

Responding to this assertion, Mr Hadzide said that could not be true.

He indicated that scientists and health experts had been offering regular updates and briefing, and, therefore, any suggestion about lack of transparency in the COVID-19 fight was mind boggling.

“The NDC cannot be allowed to approbate and reprobate on this matter,” he lamented.

Mr Hadzide noted that government, from the onset, has put in place measures to deal with the pandemic, including the constitution of a taskforce made up of technical persons, “including epidemiologists, virologists, medical doctors, Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, security heads, and so on.”

“It is this taskforce of persons of reputable background knowledge and expertise that advise the president on the policy options in fighting Covid-19, and not politicians masquerading as medical doctors in partisan Covid-19 teams,” he noted.

The Deputy Minister added that President Akufo-Addo has led “from the front and continues to address the nation honestly and regularly.”

He also debunked claims by the NDC that the government made “no provision for the eventuality of an outbreak”, and cited the initial investment of GH¢35 million announced by the President, which was later ramped up to US$100 million.

According to the Deputy Minister, the minority NDC’s claim of “worsening COVID-19 situation and the national response” was just to cover up its “flagbearer, John Mahama, who has been badly bruised by his politicisation of the COVID-19 pandemic”.

“The misinformation, deliberate distortions and warped analysis put out by the NDC flagbearer has been bemoaned and roundly condemned by many well-meaning Ghanaians,” he added.

Mr Mahama, in a recent political broadcast on Facebook, questioned why the government should go for an IMF facility, and went on to say that no other African country had done so.

In response to that, the Deputy Minister dismissed that as untrue, saying 20 other African countries, including all the ones specifically listed by the former President, had accessed a total of US$18 billion from the IMF to help cushion them through the crisis.

He said it was disappointing that the NDC was unable to provide any practical use alternatives, but continued to propagate the same baseless and unfounded allegations made by its leader.

  • Saudi Arabia triples VAT to support coronavirus-hit economy

Saudi Arabia is tripling its value-added tax (VAT) as part of austerity measures to support its coronavirus-hit economy.

The government in Riyadh also said it will suspend its cost of living allowance to shore up state finances.

The oil-rich nation has seen its income plummet as the impact of the pandemic has forced down global energy prices.

The kingdom first introduced VAT two years ago as part of efforts to cut its reliance on world crude oil markets.

Saudi Arabia’s state news agency said VAT will increase from 5% to 15% as of 1 July, while the cost of living allowance will be suspended from 1 June.

The allowance of 1,000 riyals ($267; 245 euros) per month to state employees was introduced in 2018 to help offset increased financial burdens including VAT and a rise in the price of petrol.

“These measures are painful but necessary to maintain financial and economic stability over [the] medium to long term… and overcome the unprecedented coronavirus crisis with the least damage possible,” finance minister Mohammed al-Jadaan said in the statement.

The announcement came after state spending outstripped income, pushing the kingdom into a $9bn (£7.2bn) budget deficit in the first three months of the year.

That’s as oil revenues in the period fell by almost a quarter from a year earlier to $34bn, pulling down total revenues by 22%.

At the same time Saudi Arabia’s central bank saw its foreign reserves fall in March at their fastest rate in at least two decades and to their lowest level since 2011.

The measures to fight the impact of coronavirus are expected to slow the pace and scale of economic reforms launched by Crown Price Mohammed bin Salman.

Last year Saudi Arabia raised a record $25.6bn in the initial public offering of shares in state-owned oil giant Aramco in Riyadh.

The share sale was at the heart of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s plans to modernise the economy and wean it off its dependence on oil.

  • ‘If some people are unhappy with whatever I’m supposed to have said, then I’m sorry’ Honyenuga

Supreme Court nominee Justice Clemence Honyenuga has said if a speech he read on behalf of the chiefs and people of Afadjato a few months ago, which, in his view, has been misconstrued as his personal endorsement of President Nana Akufo-Addo, made some people unhappy, then he apologises for it.

“[For] my part, if out of political dissatisfaction, some people are unhappy with whatever I am supposed to have said, then I am sorry,” Justice Honyenuga told Parliament on Monday, 11 May 2020 while being vetted by the Appointments Committee.

According to the nominee, he did not endorse the Presidency of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his personal capacity.

He said the state-owned Daily Graphic, which reported the story, misrepresented him and did not state that the endorsement was not his, but a speech he was elected to read on behalf of the chiefs.

The judge also indicated that the assertion that the president visited his traditional area was untrue as the President visited the Afadjato area where he was selected to speak on behalf of the traditional leaders.

Justice Honyenuga, who is also the Paramount Chief of the Nyagbo Traditional Area, earlier this year in his welcome address to President Akufo-Addo at a durbar of chiefs and people of the Afajato South District, was full of praise for the Akufo-Addo-led administration.

“We wish to congratulate you for the excellent manner you are governing this dear country of ours, Ghana, and the significant gains made in the economy in your first term”, adding: “It is true that you have won high admiration, not only in Africa but also in advanced democracies.

“Your flagship programmes, like the Free Senior High School, Planting for Food and Jobs which has increased food production and has even led to exports; One District-One Factory, among others, has (sic) increased food production and has (sic) improved upon the standard of living of many Ghanaians”, he said.

The chief continued thus: “Your Free SHS programme is unprecedented in the history of Ghana, in a first term, as it covers the whole country”.

The Daily Graphic newspaper quoted Justice Honyenuga as calling on Ghanaians to give President Akufo-Addo another term to implement his vision for the country.

“We wish to congratulate you for the excellent manner you are governing this dear country of ours; it is our hope that with your vision and the gains made in your first term, Ghanaians may consider giving you another four years,” he stated.

Justice Honyenuga was widely condemned for the endorsement taking into consideration his position as a Court of Appeal Judge who is barred from making such political endorsement per the code of their conduct.

  • Coronavirus: Mexican jailed gang leader Escamilla dies

Moisés Escamilla May, a notorious Mexican gang leader, has died in prison after contracting coronavirus.

Escamilla, 45, was the leader of a group within the feared criminal cartel Los Zetas.

He was serving a 37-year sentence for organized crime, including his role in the decapitation of 12 people in Yucatán.

More than 3,450 have died with Covid-19 in Mexico, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

    Who was Moisés Escamilla?

Moisés Escamilla May, also known as Gordo May (Fat May), led a group calling itself “Old School Zetas”, which formed part of the Los Zetas criminal cartel.

He was the main supplier of cocaine in Cancún, smuggling it via maritime routes from Central America into the popular beach resort.

He also ran a network of informants which included members of the local police force.

When he was arrested in 2008 along with eight of his men, his group was considered the strongest criminal organisation in the Cancún area.

He was viewed as a highly dangerous inmate and when he died was being held at the Puente Grande maximum security prison in Jalisco state.

He developed respiratory problems on 6 May and died two days later, but authorities only made his death public on Sunday.

How badly hit is Mexico by coronavirus?

According to the tally kept by Johns Hopkins University, Mexico has more than 35,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 3,465 deaths.

That figure is much lower than that of its northern neighbour, the US, which has the highest number of confirmed infections anywhere in the world at more than 1.3 million.

However, many in Mexico fear that a low level of testing means the true number of cases could be much higher.

    What’s the situation in prisons?

The United Nations has warned that prisons in Latin America, which are often overcrowded, could become hotbeds of coronavirus as it is impossible for inmates to socially distance.

There have been deadly prison riots in Venezuela, Peru and Colombia – with inmates demanding more be done to shield them from the virus.

An amnesty law passed in Mexico to allow some inmates to go free and ease overcrowding in prisons during the pandemic has been criticised by activists as not being far-reaching enough to make a difference.

At Puente Grande prison alone, there have been 74 reported coronavirus cases, local media say.

  • Eric Bekoe opens up on Asante Kotoko exit

Former Asante Kotoko striker Eric Bekoe has opened up on his surprise exit from the club after only one season.

Bekoe scored an incredible 17 goals in 23 matches as he won the top goalscorer award in the 2007/08 Ghana Premier League season.

He also won the league title as well as the Presidents Cup with the Porcupine Warriors in the same year.

However, the 33-year-old swapped Kotoko for Petrojet in Egypt after spending only one season with the Kumasi based side.

According to the former Berekum Chelsea striker, Kotoko didn’t use me like Petrojet as he was injected to play for them on regularly basis.

“It’s because of the Genesis with which I came to Kotoko because If you look at the long winding route I passed before reaching Kotoko it was tiresome,” he told Kumasi based Akoma Fm.

“Kotoko didn’t use me like Petrojet where I was being injected to play week in week out and I had qualified the team to Africa”

“When I reached Petrojet you could see I was very stressed If you see my picture when I was signing you would ask is he the same person who played for Kotoko.”

  • Legal Aid Scheme needs to be resourced – Supreme Court nominee

A Supreme Court nominee, Justice Honyenuga has called for more resources for the Ghana Legal Aid Scheme to enable the scheme to deliver its mandate effectively and efficiently.

According to him, the scheme plays a significant role in the justice delivery system of the country, and therefore denying them the needed resources  would affect the operations of the scheme.

Justice Honyenuga who was answering a question on the role of the Justice for All Programme during his vetting today [Monday, May 11, 2020] as a Supreme Court nominee, said the Ghana Legal Aid Scheme lacked many resources including lawyers.

He explained that the scheme had to sometimes rely on the benevolence of the Ghana Bar Association for lawyers to represent their clients in courts.

He said many of the lawyers who come to do their national service at the scheme leave after the expiration of their service because they do not find the scheme attractive to work there.

Justice Honyenuga was of the view that since not everyone who could afford the services of a lawyer, resourcing the scheme would help it to provide legal services to the less privileged ones in the society.

He said through the Justice for All Progamme, the country had been praised by many international bodies, including the General Assembly of the United Nations.

    Legal Aid

Ghana Legal Aid Scheme is a public service organisation within the Justice delivery system of Ghana.

It provides legal assistance for all who seek to defend or enforce the constitution in accordance with Article 294 of the Constitution.

The Scheme is tasked under the Legal Aid Scheme Act 1997 (Act 542) to provide legal assistance to the poor and indigent, as well as other persons in the prosecution and defence of their rights under the Constitution of Ghana.

The Legal Aid Scheme is Ghana’s effort at ensuring that constitutional democracy, rule of law and access to justice extends to the poor and vulnerable who would otherwise be excluded from the formal justice delivery system.

  • Lake Victoria rising levels affects Uganda power supply

The record water levels in Lake Victoria forced authorities in Uganda to ration power over the weekend until Monday.

The lake is the source of water for the country’s four big hydropower plants, along the River Nile and following heavy rains the water level has risen to its highest since 1964.

The authorities have been releasing water from the dams, to ease pressure.

On Friday water levels on Lake Victoria rose to more than 13.4m, setting a new record.

The high water has caused flooding, with homes and hotels close to the shore affected.

It has also dislodged large islands of floating debris and weeds, which threatened to block turbines and forced the electricity suppliers to close down hydropower dam operations twice recently.

That caused power cuts across Uganda and other countries in the region.

East Africa is experiencing heavier than usual rains, which are forecast to continue this month.

  • Virus symptoms multiply as pandemic deepens

Every week, it seems, the list of coronavirus symptoms, ranging from disagreeable to deadly, from “COVID toes” to toxic shock, grows longer.

What began as a familiar flu-like cluster of chills, headaches and fever has rapidly expanded over the last three months into a catalogue of syndromes affecting most of the body’s main organs.

The new coronavirus can also push the immune system into overdrive, unleashing an indiscriminate assault on pathogens and their human hosts alike.

“Most viruses can cause disease in two ways,” explained Jeremy Rossman, a senior lecturer in virology at the University of Kent.

“They can damage tissue where the virus replicates, or they can cause damage as a side effect of the immune system fighting off the disease.”

Doctors suspect, for example, that COVID-19 is behind the hospitalisation in recent weeks of more than 100 children and adolescent in New York, London and Paris diagnosed with a disorder similar to toxic shock syndrome that attacks blood vessel walls and can cause fever, vomiting and in extreme cases organ failure.

Three deaths in New York state have been attributed to so-calling paediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome, with two others deemed likely.

In adults, COVID-19 had been linked in dozens of medical studies to other life-threatening symptoms, including strokes, heart damage and brain swelling.

Researchers from the urology department of Nanjing Medical University, writing last week in Nature Reviews, described patients developing severe urinary complications and acute kidney injury.

They also observed “dramatic changes” in male sex hormones.

“After recovery from COVID-19, young men who are interested in having children should receive a consultation regarding their fertility,” they advised.

    Cascading symptoms

Does that mean that COVID-19 causes a uniquely broad array of symptoms? Not necessarily, virologists and other experts say.

“If it is a common disease, then even rare complications will happen frequently,” Babak Javid, a consultant in infectious diseases at Cambridge University Hospitals, told AFP.

There are more than 4.1 million confirmed COVID-19 cases around the world, but the true number of infections – taking into account undetected and asymptomatic infection – “is going to be in the tens, possibly hundreds of millions” he said.

“So if one-in-1,000, or even one-in-10,000, get complications, that is still thousands of people.”

Some of the rare symptoms associated with the new coronavirus also show up with influenza, which kills several hundred thousand people worldwide every year, he noted. But with a crucial difference: “Compared to influenza, you are much more likely to become seriously ill, and to die.”

The number of confirmed COVID-19 deaths is fast approaching 300,000.

Frontline general practitioners have been the first to see patterns as the pandemic spread across the globe from ground zero in central China in a matter of weeks.

“At the outset, we were told to watch out for headaches, fever and a light cough,” recalls Sylvie Monnoye, a family doctor in central Paris.

“Then they added a runny nose and a scratchy throat. After that, digestive problems, including stomach aches and severe diarrhoea.”

The list kept growing: skin lesions, neurological problems, sharp chest pains, loss of taste and smell.

    A feeling of confusion

“We started to think that we should suspect everything,” Monnoye said, dressed from head-to-toe in protective wear.

Some patients were so terrified, she added, that they cowered in the corner of her office afraid to touch anything or get too close to her.

An internal US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) report with a breakdown of symptoms for 2,591 COVID-10 patients admitted to hospital between March 1 and May 1 chimes with such anecdotal accounts.

Three-quarters of the patients experienced chills, fever and/or coughing, with nearly as many showing shortness of breath.

These are, by far, the most common COVID-19 symptoms.

Nearly a third complained of flu-like muscle aches, while 28 percent experienced diarrhoea and a quarter nausea or vomiting, according to the internal report, leaked to the media.

Some 18 percent had headaches, while 10 to 15 percent were hit by chest or abdominal pain, runny nose, sore throat and/or a feeling of confusion.

Less than one percent of the CDC cohort had other symptoms, including seizures, rashes and conjunctivitis.

Health authorities have been slow in alerting the public to this panoply of possible impacts.

    Loss of smell

Until the end of April, the CDC itself only listed three on its website: coughing, fever and shortness of breath. The update included only a few more: chills, muscle pain, headaches and loss of smell or taste.

A loss of smell and taste was found in only 3.5 percent of patients included in the CDC report, but experts suspect these symptoms are – for reasons unknown – more prevalent in less severe cases where people were not hospitalised.

“I don’t have any patients with these symptoms who had serious complications,” said Monnoye.

The loss of taste and smell, experts note, is extremely rare with other types of virus.

Another cluster of symptoms rarely found in flu patients appears to arise from blood clots.

Heart problems, liver thrombosis, lung embolisms and brain damage in COVID-19 patients have been traced to such clots in recent studies.

“When one is very sick with COVID, you can have a problem with blood clots forming, and that seems to be much, much more common than with other viral infections,” added Javid.

A third cluster of unusual symptoms involve skin eruptions.

“COVID-associated ‘rashes’ seem to be as numerous as they are hard to pin down,” dermatologist Graeme Lipper said on Medscape, a medical information website.

A condition known as pseudo-chilblains, or “COVID toes”, has garnered the most attention, with photos on social media showing digits discoloured as if with frostbite.

Like loss of smell, the symptom – which can cause painful itching and burning – is associated with benign forms of the virus.

  • 3 UN peacekeepers killed in Mali

Three Chadian UN peacekeepers were killed and four injured in an attack on a UN convoy in northern Mali, a peacekeeping mission there said late Sunday.

In a statement, the United Nations Integrated Stabilization Mission for Mali (MINUSMA) said the incident took place near Aguelhok in the Kidal region.

Kidal is the former stronghold of separatist rebels in Mali. But several militant groups are active in the north despite a 2015 peace agreement between the Malian government and Tuareg rebel groups.

Mahamat Saleh Annadif, head of the mission, condemned the attack against civilians and UN operations in the West African country.

“We will have to combine all efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for these terrorist acts,” Annadif said.

”The Secretary-General expresses his deep condolences to the families of the victims, as well as the Government and people of Chad. He wishes a speedy recovery to the injured,” Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the secretary-general, said in a separate statement.

”The Secretary-General reaffirms that such cowardly acts will not deter the United Nations from its resolve to continue supporting the people and Government of Mali in their pursuit of peace and stability,” he added.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but similar attacks are usually claimed by militias linked to Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

Mali, one of the poorest countries in the world, suffers from the presence of several terror groups, and French, Malian, and UN peacekeepers carry out counter-terrorism operations there.

Tensions erupted in Mali in 2012 following a failed coup and a Tuareg rebellion that ultimately allowed al-Qaeda-linked militant groups to take over the northern half of the country. In 2015, a peace deal was signed between the government and some insurgent groups.

Political and community disputes continue to fuel tensions in the West African nation, thus undermining the implementation of the peace agreement.

  • Displaced Somalis share Ramadan meal under shadow of coronavirus

In makeshift metal homes in a camp in Mogadishu, women wrapped in brightly patterned scarves are making savoury pastries and mixing flour for flatbreads.

They are preparing iftar, the evening meal when Muslims break their fast during Ramadan, which this year falls in the middle of a global pandemic.

Social distancing and frequent handwashing to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus are difficult requests for people living at such close quarters and with poor sanitation.

During Ramadan, when food prices rise, they become nigh on impossible. With cash growing even scarcer as the coronavirus outbreak cripples the economy, they are pooling what they have with neighbours in order to cobble together a communal meal.

“As coronavirus broke out in the city and people are not going to work … we started collecting half dollar, one dollar or two dollars” from families for food, said resident Mohamed Warsame Hirsi.

Somalia has 928 confirmed coronavirus cases as of Thursday, according to a Reuters tally based on government statements and WHO data. And with 44 deaths, it has the highest number of fatalities in the region.

“We do not have soap to clean our hands as the virus spreads,” said Khadija Diriye, who also lives at the camp.

People are praying for some respite, like Hassan Ibrahim, another resident.

“We wish Allah to give us good recovery from disease.”

  • Ugandan rebels behead 3 in DR Congo

Uganda’s Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) beheaded three people in the latest attack in the Ituri region in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s north Kivu province, local media reported Saturday.

“Three civilians were killed in a new attack by the Allied Democratic Forces fighters late Friday in the village of Mbingi, west of the city of Oicha, in Beni territory. All the victims, including a woman, were beheaded,” Actualite.cd quoted Kinos Katuho, head of a local civil society group.

The killings took place at 9 p.m. local time (2000GMT).

Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) pursued the attackers, according to media reports.

It is the second attack blamed on ADF rebels this week in the area.

Rebels killed two civilians in Mabatundu village late Thursday.

FARDC launched an offensive against the ADF at the end of October.

Originally from Uganda, the rebels have been accused of killing more than 1,000 people in the Beni area in the northern part of North Kivu since 2014.

According to civil society groups, rebels killed about 150 civilians between November and December in reprisal attacks.

The attacks on civilians triggered protests in Beni in December, where locals blamed the UN peacekeeping force, MONUSCO, of failing to protect them.

Celebrities and social media influencers are joining the #MaskingForAFriend campaign to encourage the wearing of face masks to protect others.

The campaign seeks to spread accurate information about the benefits of masking, particularly for those around us.

Since President Akufo-Addo lifted the ban on restrictions of movement, wearing of face masks has become compulsory for all.

Latest to join the campaign is renowed actress and model, Haillie Sumney.

Taking to social media to endorse the initiative the model wrote “As we start to navigate life beyond the stay-at-home orders, we likely will need to continue to use face masks if we want to prevent continued transmission.
