  • Trump backs Tesla on reopening after Musk defies order

President Donald Trump sided with Tesla on Tuesday, calling for California authorities to allow the reopening of the electric carmaker’s assembly plant after company chief Elon Musk said he was defying local authorities.

Trump’s comments came a day after Musk said he was restarting production at the plant in Fremont, California and after a series of angry tirades against the state’s lockdown policies to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

“California should let Tesla & @elonmusk open the plant, NOW. It can be done Fast & Safely!” Trump said in a tweet.

Musk said Monday the company was resuming production, defying authorities and escalating a feud over the Pacific state’s pandemic shutdown.

“I will be on the line with everyone else,” Musk tweeted. “If anyone is arrested, I ask that it only be me.”

Musk’s move comes amid rising disputes over the pace of easing the lockdowns imposed by states to contain the deadly coronavirus outbreak.

Over the weekend, Musk threatened to move Tesla’s headquarters and factory out of California as a result of the standoff.

Following Musk’s statement, Alameda County’s office of emergency services said Tesla was only allowed to maintain “minimum basic operations” until officials approve a plan.

“We are addressing using the same phased approach used for other businesses which have violated the (shutdown) order in the past, and we hope that Tesla will likewise comply without further enforcement measures,” the county statement said.

The US administration is pushing a reopening of the world’s largest economy, battered by weeks of lockdown, even as the daily death toll has generally been rising by 1,000 to 2,500 in recent weeks.

Musk has been raging on Twitter for days about his unsuccessful efforts to restart production, claiming the ban violates “our Constitutional freedoms & just plain common sense!”

In late April, he delivered an expletive-laden diatribe during an earnings update call in which he dubbed coronavirus restrictions “fascist.

  • Afghan attack: Babies killed as gunmen storm maternity ward

Two babies and 11 mothers and nurses have been killed in an attack on a hospital in the Afghan capital.

Another 15 people, including a number of children, were injured when several gunmen attacked the Kabul hospital on Tuesday morning, officials said.

Part of the hospital is run by the international medical charity, Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF), and some of those working there are foreigners.

Meanwhile, in the east, an attack at a police funeral has killed at least 24.

Dozens more were injured in that bomb blast and casualty numbers in both attacks could rise. It is not clear who carried out either attack.

In Kabul, locals heard two blasts, then gunfire. One doctor who fled during the assault, which began at about 10:00 local time (05:30 GMT), told the BBC about 180 people were in the hospital when the gunmen began their attack.

Afghan special forces have rescued 100 women and children, including three foreigners, an official told the BBC.

The attackers, who gained access dressed as police officers, according to news agency Reuters, were all killed by security personnel after a battle lasting hours.

Images from the scene of the attack showed soldiers carrying one newborn baby to safety, swaddled in a blood-stained blanket. It is not clear if the infant had been injured.

The Dasht-e-Barchi Hospital has a maternity wing run by MSF. Many foreign staff live in a guesthouse behind the hospital building and a doctor who fled the building told the BBC he saw an explosion there too.

The Taliban, who signed a withdrawal agreement with the United States more than two months ago, have denied involvement.

In the past, similar attacks on foreign and other civilians in this mostly Shia area of the capital have been attributed to the Islamic State (IS) militant group, which has not yet issued a statement. The group’s leader in South Asia and the Far East was arrested in Kabul on Tuesday, with two other high profile members, Afghan intelligence said.

In 2017, IS gunmen disguised as medical staff attacked Kabul’s main military hospital, prompting widespread shock and anger and raising questions about security. The authorities later confirmed about 50 people had been killed.

But the Taliban also attack hospitals. Last September, 20 people died after a truck packed with explosives was detonated by militants from the group outside a hospital in southern Zabul province.

Image copyrightEPA Image caption People help those injured during the attack on the funeral to a hospital In the eastern province of Nangarhar, a member of the provincial council was among those killed in the attack on Tuesday on the funeral procession of a local police commander.

According to survivors, thousands of people had gathered for the funeral. The bomb detonated about half-way through.

Ataullah Khogyani, a spokesman for the governor, said another 68 people were injured.

Zabat Amir Mohammad, a former member of the Nangarhar provincial council, told local news outlet Sharq TV that “it was difficult to identify” the bodies among the wounded and killed.

The Taliban have denied carrying out the attack, although it remains unclear who was behind it and the group have denied responsibility in the past for attacks they are accused of.

In northern Balkh province, at least 10 people have been killed and as many others injured in an airstrike by US forces, reports say.

Local residents and the Taliban claim the victims were all civilians. But the Afghan Defence Ministry said all those killed were militants.

Since the February peace deal, talks have broken down over a prisoner swap agreed between the US and the Taliban and violence has continued unabated. IS were not part of the negotiations.

The agreement was aimed at ending more than 18 years of war since US-led forces ousted the Taliban from power following the 9/11 attacks on the US, whose mastermind Osama Bin Laden had been given sanctuary by the hardline Islamist group.

Tens of thousands of people, most of them civilians, have been killed in the conflict. Many more have been injured or displaced from their homes.

  • Coronavirus, low oil prices take toll on April US inflation

Falling prices for just about everything besides food sent US inflation dropping in April by the largest amount since the global financial crisis in 2008, government data showed Tuesday.

April’s consumer price index data were the first to fully capture the effects of the lockdowns to stop the coronavirus pandemic that have undone the world’s largest economy, sending the unemployment rate spiking to 14.7 percent and wiping out tens of millions of jobs, with 20.5 million rendered jobless last month alone.

The disruptions have caused a dramatic fall in demand for oil which, together with a price war between top producers Russia and Saudi Arabia, pushed down energy prices dramatically, contributing to the fall in CPI.

The CPI fell in April by a seasonally adjusted 0.8 percent, in line with analyst expectations but an acceleration of its 0.4 percent decline in March and its largest month-on-month fall since December 2008.

The index’s last month of positive growth was February, in which it rose 0.1 percent, and over the last 12 months the index only increased 0.3 percent, not seasonally adjusted.

Gasoline prices led April’s decline with a 20.6 percent fall, but other sectors badly affected by the business closure also saw prices drop.

Apparel dropped by 4.7 percent compared to March, the same rate as transportation services, while airline fares fell by 15.2 percent and used cars and trucks by 0.4 percent.

The “core” for all items except food and energy fell by 0.4 percent, its largest monthly drop since the index was created in 1957.

As consumers pared back spending to the essentials, the food index registered spectacular growth of 1.5 percent, with food at home jumping by 2.6 percent — it largest-ever monthly increase.

Meat, poultry, fish and eggs rose 4.3 percent, with eggs leading the charge with a 16.1 percent increase.

However, Ian Shepherdson of Pantheon Macroeconomics said some of that increase was due to supply shortages at slaughterhouses as they struggled to fend off outbreaks of COVID-19, and the report didn’t indicate the US was set for protracted deflation.

As the economy recovers from the coronavirus, “The collapse in clothing prices, for example, will be limited by the rotation of seasonal inventory and the reopening of retail stores, while airline traffic and hotel occupancy rates are now gradually rising, albeit from incredibly depressed levels,” Shepherdson said.

  • Hackers hit A-list law firm of Lady Gaga, Drake and Madonna

A law firm used by A-list stars including Rod Stewart, Lil Nas X and Robert De Niro has been hacked.

The website for Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks is down and hackers claim to have 756 gigabytes of data including contracts and personal emails.

A screenshot allegedly of a Madonna contract has been released, and the criminals are demanding payment.

The New York law firm says it has notified its clients and is working with cyber-security experts.

It’s not known what sum the hackers are demanding and whether the law firm is negotiating with them.

The law firm said in a press statement: “We can confirm that we’ve been victimised by a cyber-attack. We have notified our clients and our staff. We have hired the world’s experts who specialise in this area, and we are working around the clock to address these matters.”

The company’s website is displaying just a logo but historic records of the site show a client list of more than 200 high profile people and companies.

Musicians include Sir Elton John, Barbra Streisand, Barry Manilow, Rod Stewart, Lady Gaga, Lil Nas X, The Weeknd, Madonna, U2 and Drake.

Other clients named are Andrew Lloyd Webber, Priyanka Chopra, Robert De Niro, Sofia Vergara, Activision, Inc, Sony Corp, LeBron James and Mike Tyson.

The hackers known as REvil or Sodinokibi previously attacked foreign exchange company Travelex with ransomware in January.

Ransomware is one of the biggest problems in cyber-security and is a malicious type of software that encrypts data until a ransom is paid, usually in untraceable crypto-currency Bitcoin.

Cyber-security company Emsisoft says the hackers have posted images online of a contract for Madonna’s World Tour 2019-20 complete with signatures from an employee and concert company Live Nation.

Hackers have also uploaded an image they claim shows the stolen data directory with folders named under certain clients. Posting a sample of stolen data is often done as a way to prove a hack has happened and put pressure on a victim to pay a ransom.

“Companies in this position have no good options available to them,” Brett Callow, threat analyst at Emsisoft said. “Non-payment of the demand will result in the information being published; payment will simply get them a pinky promise from criminals that the stolen data will be deleted.

“These incidents are becoming increasingly commonplace and increasingly concerning. And incidents involving law firms are even more concerning due to the sensitivity of the data they hold.”

The law firm and some of the celebrities have been approached for further comment.

  • Wuhan to test entire population after new virus cluster – State media

Wuhan plans to conduct coronavirus tests on the Chinese city’s entire population after new cases emerged for the first time in weeks in the cradle of the global pandemic, state media reported Tuesday.

Officials had been ordered to submit by noon on Tuesday plans to administer nucleic acid tests on all residents in the city of 11 million people, according to an official notice carried by news outlets.

“Each district should make plans and arrangements to conduct nucleic acid tests on the entire population in its jurisdiction within a 10-day time limit,” the notice said, although it was unclear when testing would begin.

The planned tests come after Wuhan reported the first cluster of new COVID-19 infections since the city re-opened after a 76-day lockdown on April 8.

Six new cases were reported on Sunday and Monday from a residential compound in Dongxihu District.

But an official from the Dongxihu District epidemic prevention and control commanding office told AFP that they have “not yet received news about this notice”.

China has largely brought the virus under control, but it has been on edge about being hit by a second wave as it has lifted lockdowns and restrictions across the country.

Virus clusters have appeared recent weeks in the northeastern provinces of Jilin and Heilongjiang, which border Russia.

With the virus taking hold in other nations, China has barred most foreigners from entering the country.

Wuhan has reported 3,869 deaths since the novel coronavirus first emerged there in December, accounting for most fatalities in China. Scientists believe the virus jumped from animals to humans at a market that sold wildlife in the city.

  • Virus-hit Iran to reopen mosques for holy nights

Virus-hit Iran will reopen its mosques for three nights over the next week so that worshippers can pray during one of the holiest times of year, a minister said Tuesday.

The Islamic republic shut its mosques and shrines in March as part of its efforts to contain the Middle East’s deadliest outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

The reopening was granted for Laylat al-Qadr – a high point during the fasting month of Ramadan that marks when the Koran was revealed to Prophet Mohammed.

But Health Minister Saeed Namaki sounded a note of caution as he announced that worshippers would be allowed to attend mosques and ceremonies for three of the next five nights.

“The biggest strategic mistake is to think that coronavirus is finished,” he said in remarks broadcast on state television.

“At any time, we can go back to bad circumstances” due to “negligence”, said Namaki.

“Our priority is to hold ceremonies outdoors” such as “in stadiums”, he said, “so that social distancing is properly observed.”

Namaki said his ministry agreed in a meeting to help “organise ceremonies from midnight to 2:00 am during the nights of Qadr”.

    Supreme leader ‘concern’

He said the move came in response to “concern” expressed by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but stressed the supreme leader “always supports all measures” to contain the virus.

All gatherings would need to respect “sanitary protocols to the maximum”, he added.

But he warned: “They shouldn’t blame the health ministry and say they wanted to open mosques but didn’t care about people’s health”.

Iran has struggled to contain its outbreak of the virus that causes COVID-19 since announcing its first cases in the Shiite holy city of Qom on February 19.

The government closed schools, postponed major events and banned inter-city travel but it has eased restrictions gradually since April 11.

It allowed mosques to reopen on May 4 in 132 counties where the virus was deemed to be under control.

And on Friday last week worshippers were able to attend the main weekly prayers for the first time in more than two months, except for in the capital.

The government warned on Monday of a setback in its efforts to contain the virus as the official death toll hit 6,685.

“We have regressed in Khuzestan due to (people) not observing health protocols,” Deputy Health Minister Alireza Raisi said, referring to a southwestern province that is now the epicentre of the country’s outbreak.

“This can happen to any other province if we are not careful,” he added, noting that tighter measures would be reimposed in other places too if needed.

Experts inside and outside Iran have cast doubt on the country’s official COVID-19 figures, and say the real toll could be much higher.

  • There will be chaos in Ghana if 2020 general elections are not held John Boadu warns

General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu has indicated that it is not negotiable that the 2020 general elections “must” be held on December 7 this year.

According to him, “the danger and chaos” that would be brought upon the country if the elections are postponed would be dire than what the deadly Coronavirus could ever cause.

Speaking in an interview with Kumasi-based Angel, John Boadu said the constitution does not make provisions for the order of succession should the President, his Vice, his ministers, all his chiefs executive and Parliamentarians be out of office by the night of January 6 2021 and so the whole state machinery would grind to halt; “if that vacuum is created, it would be dangerous than the coronavirus, because it would create a lot of confusion as to the way forward”.

“So it is a must that the election be held on 7th December, we are not the only people in the world, there are a lot of countries with far more cases of the virus than us but have successfully conducted elections by putting in place strict safety protocols to safeguard the voters; Mali has voted, South Korea has voted, Tanzania would vote in October, so I do not see anybody in Ghana opposing the elections on December 7, so the Electoral Commission must employ every means possible for us to vote on that day or the chaos that this country will go through, it will be more than the Coronavirus”, he said.

The NPP scribe also noted that, his party still holds its stance that the current voter register is not credible and so cannot be trusted for the upcoming general elections, but it cannot force the Electoral Commission to do their bidding.

In view of this, John Boadu urged President Akufo Addo and his government to be mindful of the exigencies of the time and consider easing the restrictions on social and public gatherings to allow the Electoral Commission to compile a new voters register and also allow political parties to conduct their primaries and start their electioneering campaigns.

“The President and the government must continue to have it at the back of their minds that, we must vote on December 7 at all cost and so must begin easing the restrictions on social and public congregations, so that the Electoral Commission can go ahead and do its work; the measures must also be relaxed so that political parties can do a bit of campaigning ahead of the elections”, John Boadu added.

  • Czech media name Russian diplomat in ‘poison plot’ row

Russia’s embassy in Prague has asked for police protection for one of its diplomats, who has been named by Czech media amid allegations of a plot to poison Czech politicians.

It said “false and unfounded” allegations had been made against one of its employees and he was now receiving threats.

There has been no confirmation three Czech mayors were the focus of a plot.

But all three – including the Prague city mayor – got police protection.

Last month a Czech weekly, Respekt, alleged that a Russian agent had travelled to Prague with a suitcase containing the highly potent toxin, ricin. It suggested the poison might be used to target Czech politicians who had angered Russia.

Who is the man named in Czech media? A Czech TV news programme has now alleged that the reports involved Andrei Konchakov, head of the Russian Centre for Science and Culture in Prague, and suggests he is an undeclared intelligence officer.

Without naming him, the embassy said on its Facebook page that a member of its staff was the target of an “anti-Russian information campaign” and that it had been forced to apply for police protection for him. It said the diplomat was the victim of a “slander campaign” whipped up by Czech media.

Mr Konchakov told Czech website Seznam Zpravy he had brought “disinfectant and sweets” into the country in his suitcase, and not ricin as had been claimed.

Several Russian media have also reported his name. According to his biography on the Prague Russian centre’s website, he was born in 1986 and given his current job in December 2017.

The head of the federal agency he works for in Moscow dismissed the reports as a “pure provocation”, linked to an ongoing row over the removal of a statue of Soviet Marshal Ivan Konev in Prague.

Prague and Moscow are due to start talks in the coming days to try to defuse growing tension in bilateral relations.

    Who is Konchakov?

Is Andrei Konchakov’s cover blown? Is he even an undercover agent?

Russia denies this which, even if he was, is understandable. That’s the whole point of being an undeclared intelligence agent.

Czech authorities also won’t comment. But they have in the past complained about the supersized Russian diplomatic delegation.

In 2018, there were 121 Russian diplomats and support staff in Prague, with another 18 at the country’s consulates in Brno and Karlovy Vary. It’s one of the biggest Russian diplomatic missions in Europe.

Exactly how many are spies using diplomatic cover is known only to Moscow. Privately Czech officials believe it could be as high as 40%.

Czech journalists are now tweeting photos of Mr Konchakov from his Facebook account. One of the most recent shows him surrounded by members of Russia’s Night Wolves motorcycle gang, in front of the statue of World War Two Russian general Ivan Konev in Prague.

That’s the statue that has now been removed; the act that caused so much anger in Moscow.

  • Valéry Giscard dEstaing accused of sexual harassment

French officials have launched an investigation into former President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing for allegedly groping a journalist.

German reporter Ann-Kathrin Stracke says the former leader touched her buttocks repeatedly during a 2018 interview.

Ms Stracke said the global MeToo movement, which has highlighted sexual harassment and assault against women, inspired her to come forward.

The 94-year-old has denied the charge.

An emailed statement from Mr Giscard d’Estaing’s lawyer reported in the New York Times said he did not remember the incident, was not aware of any complaint, and that he was considering legal action after the “particularly undignified and offensive media attack”.

Ms Stracke filed a report in France about the incident in March. The German reporter told news agency AFP she decided to tell her story because “I think that people should know that a former French president harassed me sexually”.

She has also said the MeToo movement “showed me how important it is to talk about these matters in the open”.

What are the allegations? French newspaper Le Monde and German paper Sueddeutsche Zeitung first reported the allegations last week.

Ms Stracke, now 37, travelled to Paris in December 2018 to interview Mr Giscard D’Estaing for German public broadcaster WDR.

After speaking to the former leader the reporter said she asked for a photo with her and the team. He allegedly put his arm around her waist before moving it down to her buttocks. She said she was unable to push his hand away.

One French woman in eight raped – report The ex-president then suggested they look at photos on his office wall. During this time Ms Stracke said he again touched her buttocks, and then followed her and touched her again as she tried to move away.

“I tried to remove this hand, I did not succeed, and I was surprised by how strong he was,” she reportedly said, later describing the incident as “extremely uncomfortable”.

A cameraman then knocked over a lamp to distract Mr Giscard D’Estaing. As the team left, the former president allegedly kissed her on the cheek and said “Sweet dreams” to Ms Stracke in German.

Ms Stracke said she told her managers a few days later about the incident, who then reportedly hired an employment law firm to interview her and the cameraman.

In April 2019 the firm concluded the pair were “overall credible and suggest that the facts were exactly as described”. A spokeswoman for WDR said the company knew of the incident and backs Ms Stracke’s complaint.

According to Süddeutsche Zeitung, Mr Giscard D’Estaing’s office said he did not remember the meeting. “If what is alleged were true he would of course be very sorry, but he has no recollection of it,” chief of staff Olivier Revol told Le Monde. Mr Revol said he was astonished by the allegation as the former president had never been accused of any such thing before.

    Who is President Giscard D’Estaing?

Mr Giscard d’Estaing led his country from 1974 until 1981 and is the longest-living French president in history. During his term he legalised abortion, simplified divorce and lower the voting age to 18.

He currently sits on the country’s Constitutional Council, which examines whether new laws abide by the constitution, and the Académie Française, which protects the French language.

The former president has also written two romantic novels. The second, published in 2009 and entitled The Princess and the President, depicted an affair between the French head of state and the fictional Princess of Cardiff – a character many believe was based on Princess Diana.

Mr Giscard d’Estaing has since insisted the allegations against him are entirely made up. He has two sons with his wife, Anne-Aymone.

  • FIFA postpones women’s Under-17 World Cup to 2021

The women’s Under-17 World Cup, due to be held in India in November, has been postponed for three month, FIFA said Tuesday, adding to a growing list of sporting events hit by the pandemic.

The tournament, to be played in five cities across the country, will now start February 17, football’s governing body said.

India is looking to boost its international standing as a host of top sporting events after holding the men’s Under-17 World Cup in 2017.

“All the host cities have put in a lot of effort and commitment so far, and we are happy that the new dates will allow them to make up for the lost time and provide momentum going forward,” the local organising committee said after the FIFA announcement.

FIFA also unveiled new dates for this year’s U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica and Panama. It will now be played from January 20 to February 6, 2021.

The 2020 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Lithuania has been pushed back to September 12 next year.

Meanwhile, the 70th FIFA Congress, which was due to be held in Addis Ababa, will be run as an online event on September 18.

The coronavirus has brought international sport to a standstill, but some football leagues are restarting — albeit behind closed doors.

South Korea’s K-League came back to life last Friday and Germany’s Bundesliga football championship is to restart this weekend in empty stadiums.

  • Coronavirus mortality: HIV/AIDS, cancer patients at greater risk Dr Opare

COVID-19 is most likely to affect vulnerable patients through secondary conditions and several underlying health problems, a resident doctor at the Department of Family Medicine at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has said.

According to Dr Ernest Anim Opare, the Coronavirus pandemic has placed persons with HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B, Cancer, and Diabetes at higher risk due to the rate at which their immune system has been compromised.

He intimated that the virus causes mild or moderate symptoms for most people. But for some, especially those with health problems and obese persons, it can cause more severe illness and lead to death.

In spite of these factors that suggest persons with immunodeficiency can barely survive the coronavirus disease, Dr Opare believes such persons can fight the virus.

To prevent sickness, he said persons with compromised immune system can avoid exposure to the virus by using everyday preventive measures like social distancing, frequent hand washing, maintaining of a healthy lifestyle by eating right, getting at least eight hours of sleep and reducing stress; and continue their medication.

However, he encouraged persons suffering from obesity to be mindful of their eating habits and urged them to engage in regular exercises to boost their chances of fighting the deadly virus.

“Unhealthy nutritional habits could increase the risk of developing obesity that beyond being a chronic state of inflammation, it is often complicated by heart disease, diabetes, and lung disease that have been demonstrated to increase the risk for more serious complications of CoVID-19.” He reiterated.

The Okyenhene, Osaagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has advised the new Okuapehene, Oseeadeyo Kwasi Akuffo II, not to see his current position as means to lord it over his people.

He said for without his people, he cannot be a relevant traditional leader, urging him to give optimum regard and respect to all and sundry, especially his kingmakers and other divisional chiefs.

Giving the advice on Tuesday when the Okuapehene paid a courtesy call on him at Kyebi, the Okyenhene urged the new Okuapehene not to hesitate in calling on him in times difficulty in his reign.

The Okyenhene expressed happiness about the peaceful installation of the Okuapehene and the fact that Okuapeman now has a substantive Paramount Chief.

He called for continuous peace in Akuapem and entreated the people of Akuapem to give the due regard to their new Okuapehene and forge ahead together in development.

He contended that even though time was lost in the five-year long chieftaincy dispute after the death of the late Oseeadeyo Addo Dankwa III, “nothing has been lost.”

The Okyenhene advised that the dispute should be a lesson to all and the generations to come and purpose in their hearts and minds not to let it reoccur.

The courtesy call is the first official working visit of the Okuapehene after his installation last week.

A brief history indicates that the Ofori Panin stool has blood relations with the Ofori Kuma stool of Akuapem of which the former is the senior stool and the latter a junior stool.

Thus, the Okyenhene is regarded as the traditional uncle of the Okuapehene.

The purpose of the Okuapehene’s visit, therefore, is to officially present himself, as Ofori Kuma, to his traditional uncle, the Ofori Panin.

A nine-year-old boy is among the 22 persons who have succumbed to the Coronavirus disease in Ghana.

The boy is the youngest to have died in the country.

At the press briefing in Accra today [Tuesday, March 12, 2020], the Head of Public Health at the Ghana Health Service, Dr Badu Sakordie, said the age-range of the deaths is from nine years to 82 years; and that the oldest among the victims is 82 years.

He explained that “Males are having highest range in death in all age groups with the exception of 25 to 34 years where the death rate is the same.”

He added that most of the deaths which have been recorded had other health conditions aside the COVID-19.

Mr Sarkodie noted, for instance, that out of the 22 deaths, about 91 per cent had other health condition and that only about nine per cent didn’t have any other health conditions aside the COVID-19.

He mentioned diabetes, chronic liver diseases, asthma, obesity, stroke, prostatic conditions, acute kidney diseases, and congestive heart failure as some of the other health conditions that complicated the cases of the COVID-19 dead victims in the country.

  • Library Authority secures license for 1000 Ghanaians to study on Coursera

The Ghana Library Authority (GhLA) has secured scholarship slots for 1000 Ghanaians to study on Coursera.

Coursera is one of the leading, globally recognized Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) platforms because of its association with top universities like, Stanford University, Yale University, University of Pennsylvania and many others in offering online courses.

The Authority in partnership with the Commonwealth of Learning (CoL), earlier this year, launched the Read2skill project to offer 1000 online scholarships to Ghanaians to study on Udemy.

As a result of the massive response from Ghanaians, the Commonwealth of Learning offered 1400 more scholarship slots which are currently been utilized by the successful applicants to acquire new skills.

Speaking on the project, the Executive Director of the Ghana Library Authority, Hayford Siaw said, “to encourage Ghanaians to learn from home as the world fights the novel Covid-19 pandemic, the GhLA, with support from the CoL is offering 1000 additional online scholarships.

“This time it is on a different online learning platform called Coursera. It is an online learning platform just like Udemy, and offers a myriad of online courses for its learners.”

“The Authority received over 30,000 applications a few weeks after the Read2Skill project was launched. Therefore, we will not accept new applications, since we have about 28,000 applications which were denied enrollment due to limited slots”, he emphasised.

Mr. Siaw added that all Ghanaians who applied in our initial Read2Skill call for applications but were not selected, should remain hopeful of a better chance to study on Coursera.

Coursera works with universities and other organizations to offer online over 5000 courses in engineering, data science, machine learning, mathematics, business, computer science, digital marketing, humanities and others.

These courses provide quizzes, weekly exercises, peer-graded assignments, and sometimes a final project or exam.

Courses are also provided on-demand, in which case users can take their time to complete the course with all of the material available at once.

Successful individuals would have to start and complete their courses before December 31, 2020.

  • Isabel dos Santos says Angola faked evidence to freeze assets

Isabel dos Santos, the billionaire daughter of Angola’s ex-president Jose Eduardo dos Santos, on Tuesday accused the government of resorting to forgery to freeze her assets last year.

The 47-year-old tycoon and her Congolese husband Sindika Dokolo are accused of syphoning off more than one billion dollars from Angolan state companies.

A court in the southern African nation in December froze their bank accounts as part of a massive corruption probe.

Dos Santos claimed in a statement that a copy of a fake passport – bearing the signature of late martial arts film star Bruce Lee – was part of the evidence submitted to a court that froze her assets.

She cited among other alleged irregularities on the passport that her birth date was wrong and her name was incomplete.

“But the most ridiculous aspect is the signature of the issuing authority: this is a reproduction of the signature of Bruce Lee, the legendary kung fu actor who died in the 1970s,” said a statement released through her public relations agent.

Dos Santos said her lawyers unearthed the falsified evidence which included scam emails, after they were given access to the court documents last month.

“Looking at the forged evidence it is now clear that the Angolan state through the intelligence services, prosecution, civil court, and Supreme Court has colluded and contrived a case to obtain an unfair and illegal decision against me,” she said.

“False documents and false statements have been deliberately brought before the court.”

Dos Santos was charged in January in Angola with a long list of crimes, including mismanagement, embezzlement of funds, and money laundering during her stewardship of the oil giant Sonangol.

She was forced out of the job at Sonangol just months after her father stepped down in 2017 and was replaced by his hand-picked successor, Joao Lourenco.

Dos Santos built up a vast business empire over the past two decades, with stakes in several Angolan and Portuguese companies.

Her fortune is valued at $2.1 billion (1.9 billion euros) by Forbes Magazine, which named her Africa’s richest woman in 2013.

A consortium of investigative journalists, after analysing a trove of hundreds of thousands of leaked documents, has also accused dos Santos of looting state coffers during her father’s nearly four-decade rule.

Dos Santos has denied any wrongdoing and says she is a victim of a witch hunt.

  • WHO to launch project to boost production of essential health technologies

The World Health Organisation (WHO) will today launch the Tech Access Partnership to increase local production of essential health technologies in developing countries.

The move will see the production of ventilators and face masks in these countries as their health resources have been overstretched as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Global cases of the disease have surpassed 4 million with over 200,000 deaths.

The Director-General of WHO, Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, believes the new partnership will help needy communities access the critical tools in the fight against COVID-19.

“COVID-19 has exposed the uneven distribution of life-saving medical equipment across the world. [Today], the Tech Access Partnership will be launched to increase local production of essential health technologies like masks and ventilators in developing countries.”

“This new partnership is another great example of solidarity that builds on the solidarity flights, solidarity trials and Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator, which all aim to ensure the latest health innovations are reaching those communities that need them most,” he said.

  • Upper West GIS apprehends seven Burkina nationals

The Upper West Regional Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has apprehended seven Burkina Faso nationals for sneaking into Ghana on an unregistered tricycle (motor king).

They were arrested at about 1630 hours at Batoma, an unapproved route in the Hamile Sector Command of the GIS in the Lambussie District of the region, bordering neighbouring Burkina Faso.

Mr Ibn Yussif Duranah Abdul-Mumin Seidu, the Upper West Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the GIS, who revealed this to the Ghana news Agency in Wa, added that they were all males aged between 16 and 25.

Preliminary investigations revealed that they were destined for Techiman in the Brong Ahafo Region for farming/labour activities.

Mr Seidu explained that the illegal migrants were screened by the Port Health Officials and handed over to the Burkina Faso authorities, while the tricycle was impounded according to the law.

The President, Nana Addo Danwkwa Akufo-Addo, had ordered the closure of all the national borders land, sea and air as part of the measures to control the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

The GIS PRO issued a stern warning that the law would not take it lightly with any individual or group of persons that would be caught aiding foreigners to enter into the country illegally.

He, however, reiterated the need for the public, especially those at the border communities, to continue to support the security personnel to police the borders and to protect the country.

  • Coronavirus: Pandemic sends US jobless rate to 14.7%

The US unemployment rate has risen to 14.7%, with 20.5 million jobs lost in April, as the coronavirus pandemic devastated the economy.

The rise means the jobless rate is now worse than at any time since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Since the pandemic began, the US has suffered its worst growth numbers in a decade and the worst retail sales report on record.

Just two months ago, the unemployment rate was at 3.5%, a 50-year low.

“It is historically unprecedented,” said economist Erica Groshen, former head of the government’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, who now teaches at Cornell University. “We have put our economy into a medically induced coma in order to heal it from the pandemic… and that has led to the most precipitous loss of jobs seen in any of the modern data.”

The report from the Labor Department showed declines in every sector of the economy.

Leisure and hospitality was hit especially hard, with payrolls falling by 7.7 million or 47%. Employers in education and health services cut 2.5 million positions, while retailers shed 2.1 million.

The Labor Department said more than three-quarters of those without jobs described themselves as temporarily laid off, a sign that many of those currently without work are hopeful that the economy will be able to rebound.

But economists warned that the pandemic is likely to force major changes to businesses – such as limits on how many people may be in a restaurant at one time – that could reduce the need for workers. And the longer the shutdown lasts, the more likely it is that a business will not survive.

“Even a temporary layoff can turn into a permanent one if the business doesn’t survive or if the business has to change its business model so dramatically that it needs different numbers or a different kind of worker,” Ms Groshen said.

The economic crisis is not unique to the US. In the UK, the Bank of England has warned of the sharpest recession on record, while Canada on Friday reported its unemployment rate had increased 5.2 percentage points to 13% last month.

Statistics Canada estimated that about a third of the workforce was either out of work, or working less than half of their usual hours.

In an appearance on the Fox News channel, US President Donald Trump shrugged off the 20.5 million jobs lost in the US as “totally expected” and “no surprise”.

“Even the Democrats aren’t blaming me for that. What I can do is I can bring it back,” he said as the figures were released.

But bankruptcies have already claimed retailers such as J Crew and Neiman Marcus, as well as many firms in the energy sector, where a collapse in oil prices, due in part to a pandemic-related drop in demand, has worsened the strains.

While some states have already started to relax restrictions, re-starting the economy is likely to be difficult, as workers worry about the risk of infection and grapple with the impact of school closures.

“I’m not certain what’s going to happen next,” said Tanya Nikolaevskaya, a legal assistant in New York, who was furloughed last month, after working from home in March.

Ms Nikolaevskaya hopes to return to what she described as her dream job, but she has a medical condition that makes her worried about infection and is a single mother, whose 8-year-old daughter will need care if schools do not reopen.

“It’s all about, ‘Is there childcare,’” she said. “If I will not have childcare, I will not be able to go back.”

The number of people in the labor force – working or looking for work – fell 2.5% last month, to its lowest level since 1970, while those reporting reduced hours or an inability to find a full-time job nearly doubled.

The Labor Department warned that the situation might be worse than estimated, pointing to the spike in the number of people who said they were employed but “absent from work”. Including those responses suggests an unemployment rate closer to 20%, it said.

Among black workers, the unemployment rate jumped to 16.7%, the highest since 2010. Among Hispanics, it surged to a record 18.9%, while it climbed to a lower – but still record-setting – 14.2% among white workers.

Overall, the unemployment rate was the highest recorded in data back to 1948, while the over-the-month jobs decline was the largest reported in data back to 1939.

“The scale of the challenge cannot be overstated,” said Robert Alster, head of investment services at wealth manager Close Brothers Asset Management.

  • Traffic jams and crowded markets in Pakistan

Rows and rows of bumper-to-bumper traffic were seen across cities in Pakistan on Monday after the lockdown was eased, local media reported.

People also flocked to markets in cities, which opened for the first time in more than a month. The government earlier announced that it would lift its lockdown in phases to give some relief to the economy.

While public transport is still shut, factories and offices have opened, reported the Dawn newspaper.

“We opened today after almost two months; I am almost bankrupt and owe workers their salaries,” said Muhammad Sattar, a garment shop owner in Karachi.

But the easing of the lockdown comes amid concerns that cases are not receding in Pakistan. In fact, daily infection rates continue to grow. The country has witnessed more than 32,000 infections and 706 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

  • Coronavirus: Ghanas recovery rate low – Alex Segbefia

Former Health Minister and a member of the COVID-19 team of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Alex Segbefia says it is taking too long for people to recover from the COVID-19 virus.

The situation he suggested could create challenges for us in managing the outbreak if the treatment processes are not intensified.

Mr. Segbefia is also worried the country is having the lowest recovery rate but was quick to state that it is due to the way Ghana is conducting its testing in determining the recoveries.

Whereas Ghana has adopted a process to conduct three separate tests to determine the recoveries, other countries are conducting between just one and two tests. This may have accounted for the low recovery rate, he explained.

However, no matter the way you look at it, our recovery rate is still low, he added.

He said the more people that sick, the more people would need isolation and the hospitals would not be able to cope. So, we are in a crisis situation.

He also clarified that the NDC team did not criticise the government because of its policy in dealing with the outbreak, but the delay in implementing the policy.

“If you delay in implementing policy, and you allow the window to open too much, by the time you implement the policy, you would have lost time and more people would have been infected.”

Ghana as at May 12, 2020, recorded 5127 cases o0f the coronavirus with 22 deaths.

  • Salt Media boss donates $1,000 to mother of Bernard Nyarko

The founder and CEO of Salt Media Ghana Limited and Mayday Entertainment, Charles Kwame Frimpong, has extended an arm of financial support to the grieving family of the late Kumawood actor, Bishop Nyarko, whilst using the opportunity to resound caution to the industry to reach out and help each other especially in these unprecedented times.

“Bishop was an extraordinary talent. The news of his passing left me heartbroken,” said Kwame Frimpong, Founder and CEO of Salt Media Gh and Mayday Entertainment.

Continuing his statement, Mr. Frimpong highlighted that “These are astronomically difficult times. The threat of COVID – 19 alone, is a loud and scary wake up call. We are all vulnerable. Jobs are being lost. Budgets and savings are drying up. As we all fight to stay alive, we in the Film, Music, Theatre, Media and Creative Arts spaces must also seriously rethink how we can collectively assist each other to thrive and survive. It is time to be intentional about our support for one another.

“Help your colleague in the industry however you can. Let us not wait to do this after they are gone. I am adamant that Salt Media Gh and Mayday Entertainment do their best to provide support to the very same industry players who have provided us with some of the greatest entertaining elements that keep us all going in good times and in bad.”

Bishop Nyarko, born Bernard Kwame Nyarko, was a staple on the Kumawood movie scene. His natural talent and undoubtedly strong passion for the roles he played, were often the first and lasting impressions he left on anyone who had the pleasure of seeing any of his movies.

Equally, in his ensuing chosen path as religious leader, Bishop, as many affectionately called him off and on camera, shared a similar passion and innate desire to use his voice and strong sentiment to draw more people to God almighty.

  • Ryanair boss calls quarantine rules ‘idiotic’

Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary has described quarantine rules as “idiotic” as he announced plans to restart flights from July.

The budget airline boss told BBC Breakfast the firm would look to sell all of the seats on its flights, but would put in place temperature checks and face masks for passengers and crews.

He said: “The business only functions if we can sell most of the seats on most of the flights.

“We accept in July and August the load factors will be lower than that, but we don’t need social distancing. In fact the government has already recommended where social distancing isn’t possible, wear face masks – that is the effective measure against the spread of Covid-19, not ineffective measures like a 14-day quarantine which no one will observe anyway.”

The government is introducing the 14-day quarantine as Covid-19 has a one to 14-day incubation period, during which it can be transmitted even without symptoms.

Mr O’Leary disputed that the quarantine was science-based, due to French and Irish travellers being exempt.

Ryanair has announced today that it plans to restart 40% of its flights, almost 1,000 a day, from 1 July, subject to restrictions being lifted in the EU.

  • Ethiopia taps diaspora doctors to stay ahead of coronavirus

Every weekday at noon, radio host Mehret Debebe heads to his studio for a live call-in show devoted to a single topic: what the coronavirus means for Ethiopia.

The questions come from across the country, as farmers in remote regions ask how they should prepare – and in some cases whether the virus is even real.

The answers come from even farther afield.

That’s because Mehret has taken to stacking his guest list with Ethiopian doctors based abroad, often in countries like the United States that have been hit much harder by the pandemic.

“We are still in the pre-crisis phase, so I think learning from them would help a lot,” Mehret, a US-trained psychiatrist, said of his diaspora guests.

“We don’t know what the crisis will be like.”

The World Bank says Ethiopia has just one doctor for every 10,000 people – a ratio that’s half of neighbouring Kenya’s, four times lower than Nigeria’s and nine times lower than South Africa’s.

But the global response to the pandemic has benefited from the work of Ethiopian doctors overseas, including aides to WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus – who is himself Ethiopian, though not a doctor, and emergency-room physicians in hotspots like New York.

Mehret’s show is part of a broader effort to enlist those doctors to help shape the local response.

Just 250 cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, have been confirmed so far in Ethiopia, but experts warn the health system could easily become overwhelmed by a major surge.

“That’s the worst-case scenario,” said Dr Wubrest Tesfaye, Mehret’s co-host.

“Having first-hand experience from a person who is at the front, responding to the highest outbreak crisis, would give us the right kind of information” on how to prepare.

    The view from New York

It was late March when Tsion Firew, an Ethiopian emergency-room doctor based in Manhattan, realised the pandemic could be as bad as anything she’d seen in her years of responding to conflicts and humanitarian disasters.

Critical patients just kept coming, and the lack of information about the virus elevated fear and anxiety.

“I actually felt like I was back in Mosul,” she recalled, referring to her time in the Iraqi city after it was liberated from the Islamic State group in 2017.

She talked about her experiences on a recent episode of Mehret’s show – a segment Mehret said helped underscore the gravity of the virus for listeners.

Tsion’s time in New York, the worst-affected US city, has also informed her work on an Ethiopian government task force to fight the virus – which she does in the mornings before hospital shifts.

When she disagrees with Ethiopian officials, like when she thought they were moving too slowly to procure testing materials, she pushes back “forcefully”, she told AFP.

“After seeing what I saw every day, the amount of death I saw every day, my tone changed,” she said. “I became more pushy, even with the health minister.”

    ‘Time is of the essence’

Another recent guest on Mehret’s show was Dawd Siraj, an Ethiopian expert on infectious diseases at the University of Wisconsin.

He used his two appearances to break down the science behind the virus, shifting the conversation towards facts and away from what he described as “supranatural” narratives.

“The foundation of science and the methods of reaching conclusions are solid. I want to explain this to the public in an easy, understandable way,” he told AFP.

Mehret said it’s a welcome message in Ethiopia, a deeply religious country where many assume God will protect them from the disease, in part because there haven’t been many local cases so far.

“When it comes to COVID,” he said, “people really think God will take care of it because they don’t see it.”

Like Tsion, Dawd is a member of the health ministry’s coronavirus task force.

He also serves on a diaspora advisory council established by Fitsum Arega, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s former chief of staff and Ethiopia’s current ambassador in Washington.

The council’s “action plan” explains how it will use “experiences learned from around the world” to help with everything from sourcing personal protective equipment to preparing for possible lockdowns should the situation in Ethiopia deteriorate.

“The key is to get ahead of the virus. Time is of the essence!!” the document reads.

    Staying vigilant

Last week, Mehret aired an interview with Wondwossen G Tekle, an Ethiopian endovascular neurologist at the University of Texas who recently came down with, and recovered from, COVID-19.

Along with his symptoms – the aches, the chills, the loss of taste and smell – Wondwossen described the importance of prevention in keeping Ethiopia’s caseload under control.

Though the total remains low, there are now dozens of cases of community spread, and officials warn that complacency could undermine containment.

Mehret said he hoped listeners gleaned from Wondwossen’s story that “this thing can catch anyone, and you can recover”.

But he also wants them to understand the importance of continued vigilance.

“I think COVID is giving us time because maybe COVID knows we don’t have enough preparation,” Mehret said.

“But if we have all this time and we have done nothing and if the epidemic happens, I think shame on us.”

  • Coronavirus claims 30,000 jobs in Kenya’s manufacturing sector

More than 30,000 formal jobs have been lost in the manufacturing sector and 80 percent of the existing jobs are vulnerable as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to bite.

Manufacturers now say the job situation remains grim as the stimulus package the government unveiled takes longer to create the desired impact in the disrupted business environment.

In a report set to be launched today, the jobs assessment also contains several recommendations on how to keep one of the key pillars of President Kenyatta’s Big Four agenda alive.

The retail, agriculture, beverages and textile sectors create the largest number of jobs and contribute up to 60 per cent of the manufacturing sector gross domestic product.

    Indirect jobs

Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) chairman Sachen Gudka did not readily disclose details of the report he called, “a feel on the pulse of the sector”.

The Daily Nation had, however, obtained recordings of a webinar Mr Gudka held with Stanbic Bank East Africa regional economist Jibran Qureshi on the effects of the coronavirus on the manufacturing sector in which he gave several preludes to the report.

“Manufacturing sector has about 330,000 direct and three million indirect jobs. We have already lost about 30,000 formal jobs and another 140,000 or so remain vulnerable if the Covid-19 situation persists. There is even bound to be more distress if the current liquidity challenges facing many businesses continue unaddressed,” he said during the one-hour video conference.

The report that KAM prepared together with audit firm KPMG found that between five and eight out of 10 jobs have been impacted by the pandemic with employees working less, taking pay cuts or on the verge of losing their jobs.

In the informal sector about half or at least 1.8 million workers face the risk of becoming jobless as manufacturing machinery grinds to a halt with subdued demand and slow business.

    Retail sector

The agriculture sector, which employs about 294,000 formally and about 3.4 million informally, has not been spared either with about 40 percent of workers now risking job losses. The sector, which is largely subsistence will lose less jobs in the informal sector with just 10 percent expected to be impacted.

The retail sector, largely small and medium enterprises, which and employ about 259,000 in the formal sector is also expected to take a 60-70 percent hit, the same percentage under threat for its 6.8 million informal employees.

The impact is even greater on the food products, tobacco, beverages and the textile sector where most employees have already gone home as restaurants shut down and bars remain shut.

Personal care products like lotion and automotive products like fuel and lubricants have also been heavily impacted as government moved to restrict movements.

The KAM boss, however, said some sectors have received a major boost during the pandemic as their products gained more relevance.

“Those dealing in food, home care, bleaches, detergents, plastics and sanitizers have had a better season, but nothing compared to the hit experienced by businesses like book printing which is at zero as construction is also reduced significantly,” Mr Gudka said.

In the report, the manufacturers are going to ask for various interventions, some with revenue impact to the government already constrained by low tax yields. The interventions include 10-50 percent wage subsidies for some sectors hard hit by job losses like the apparel which may have to send thousands home.

  • West ‘condescends Africa over traditional medicine’

Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina has hit back at critics of an untested herbal tonic that he is promoting as a treatment for coronavirus, despite it not having gone through clinical trials.

Last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a warning against people using untested remedies for coronavirus.

Africans deserve access to medicines that have gone through proper trials even if they are derived from traditional treatments, it said.

The African Union (AU) has also said it wanted to see the scientific data on the “safety and efficacy” of the product.

Nevertheless, the tonic, known as Covid-Organics, has been sent to several African countries. Nigeria has become the latest country to say it would receive it.

Speaking to French news channel, France 24, Mr Rajoelina said that criticism of the drink, known as Covid-Organics, showed what he called Western nations’ condescending attitude to traditional African medicine.

“If it wasn’t Madagascar, and if it was a European country that had actually discovered this remedy, would there be so much doubt? I don’t think so,” he said.

But there is no peer-reviewed data to show that Covid-Organics is effective.

The tonic was tested on fewer than 20 people over three weeks, a presidential aide told the BBC – which is not in line with WHO guidelines on clinical trials.

A meeting of 70 experts on African traditional medicine has agreed that clinical trials for all medicines must be carried out, the WHO’s Africa region has tweeted.

There has also been warning from experts that the drink could give people a false sense of security which could lead people to expose themselves to the virus.

Meanwhile, the head of Nigeria’s government task force on coronavirus has said President Muhammadu Buhari has given the go-ahead for the importation of Covid-Organics.

But officials said the import would be subjected to standard validation processes before it would be used on coronavirus patients.

The unfortunate incident occurred at the Accra Sports Stadium after a Ghana Premier League game between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.

Accra Hearts of Oak was leading 2-1 against Asante Kotoko with five minutes left in the game when Kotoko supporters began throwing bottles and chairs onto the field at the 45,000-capacity Accra Sports Stadium, witnesses said.

Police responded by firing tear gas, creating panic in the stands as spectators rushed to escape, but the main gate was locked, witnesses said.

“Following that we took a look at crowd control at the stadium which led to the creation of a Rapid Deployment Force. Now we deploy officers from this unit supported by other units for sports on how to manage crowd.

  • Coronavirus: Wuhan draws up plans to test all 11 million residents

The Chinese city of Wuhan is drawing up plans to test its entire population of 11 million people for Covid-19, state media report.

The plan appears to be in its early stages, with all districts in Wuhan told to submit details as to how testing could be done within 10 days.

It comes after Wuhan, where the virus first emerged, recorded six new cases over the weekend.

Prior to this, it had seen no new cases at all since 3 April.

Wuhan, which was in strict lockdown for 11 weeks, began re-opening on 8 April.

For a while it seemed like life was getting back to normal as schools re-opened, businesses slowly emerged and public transport resumed operations. But the emergence of a cluster of cases – all from the same residential compound – has now threatened the move back to normalcy.

    ‘The ten-day-battle’

According to a report by The Paper, quoting a widely circulated internal document, every district in the city has been told to draw up a 10-day testing plan by noon on Tuesday.

Each district is responsible for coming up with its own plan based on the size of their population and whether or not there is currently an active outbreak in the district.

The document, which refers to the test plan as the “10-day battle”, also says that older people and densely populated communities should be prioritised when it comes to testing.

However several senior health officials quoted by the Global Times newspaper indicated that testing the entire city would be unfeasible and costly.

Peng Zhiyong, director of the intensive care unit of the Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, instead that testing was instead likely to be targeted at medical workers, vulnerable people and those who’d had close contacts with a case.

Another Wuhan University director suggested that a large percentage of Wuhan’s population – around 3-5 million – had already been tested, and Wuhan was “capable” of testing the remaining 6-8 million in a 10-days period.

To put the goal into context, the US now conducts around 300,000 tests each day, according to the White House. So far, it’s tested almost 9 million people in total.

On Chinese social media site Weibo, people have been raising questions about whether such a large number of tests can be carried out in just a matter of days.

“It is impossible to test so many people,” said one commenter, who also questioned how much it would cost.

Another said that such tests should have been carried out before Wuhan re-opened its doors to the rest of China.
