  • DR Congo leader replaces key aide arrested in April

Félix Tshisekedi, president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has replaced his chief of staff who is facing trial for alleged misappropriation of funds.

Vital Kamerhe, a key political figure in the country whose party helped President Tshisekedi win the 2018 election, is accused of embezzling nearly $50m (£40.7m) intended for an infrastructure programme to mark the first 100 days of the president in office.

    He has pleaded not guilty.

His position has now be taken by his former deputy Désiré Cashmir Kolongele, according to an announcement by the president’s spokesperson on Tuesday on state television.

  • Bankers Association kicks against decision to re-introduce fees on electronic transactions

The Ghana Association of Bankers has kicked against the Ghana Interbank Payments and Settlements Systems (GhIPPS) decision to re-introduce waived fees charged on electronic transactions.

GhIPPS bringing to end fee waivers mean customers who use the GhIPSS Instant Pay (GIP), Mobile Money Interoperability (MMI) and ACH Direct Credit to transact business will be charged.

Reacting to this development, the CEO of the Ghana Association of Bankers Daniel K Mensah said his outfit disagrees with any unilateral withdrawal of the waivers contrary to pronouncements made to the public.

“While we share in the expression of financial burden being borne by all actors in the financial services sector who have implemented various forms of concessions during the pendency of Covid- 19, we do not agree with any unilateral withdrawal of the waivers contrary to pronouncements made to the public.”

“Banks, as collecting agents for GhIPSS, have in reliance on the waiver, communicated to our clients that the waiver of fees on digital platforms and other alternative channels for banking will be in force throughout the pendency of the epidemic.”

The letter added, “Any unilateral withdrawal of the waivers by GhIPSS will be detrimental to the image and credibility of the banking sector. We are therefore by this letter calling for a meeting with GhIPSS and Governor of Bank of Ghana to urgently discuss this emerging development and will respectfully ask that until such meeting is held and firm decision taken, GhIPSS suspends the decision taken on the withdrawal of the waivers.”

GhIPSS waives fees off electronic transactions

As part of efforts to promote and encourage the use of digital payment options to limit the possible spread of the Coronavirus through physical cash, the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems Limited (GhIPSS) in March said it has waived off fees on all electronic payments services used by its partner financial service providers.

The fee waiver which was introduced from Monday, 23rd of March, 2020 was regardless of the volume and value of transactions.

One of the key measures was that all mobile money users can send up to GH¢100 for free (excluding cash out).

  • U/W: Jirapa records 60 cases of meningitis, 9 deaths

The Jirapa Municipality in the Upper West Region has recorded five new cases of meningitis, bringing the case count to 60 with nine deaths.

This is according to the Jirapa Municipal Director of Health Services, Florence Ansongwmine.

She told Citi News the current case included a three-year-old child.

“Currently, our district is having 60 suspected cases of meningitis, out of which 20 are confirmed. Out of the 20, we have nine deaths,” she said.

The health official also called for a concerted effort from government and all other stakeholders to nib the disease in the bud.

She said, “Fighting meningitis and COVID-19 is not a one-man thing. The Ghana Health Service cannot do it alone. We plead a concerted effort. We can do all the community education but if the community members are not adhering to it, it will not lead to anything.”

On his part, the Member of Parliament for Jirapa, Dr. Francis Bawanaa Dakurah accused the government of not showing enough commitment in the fight against COVID-19 and meningitis in the municipality.

He spoke after presenting some medical suppliers to the municipality to help fight COVID-19.

“The resources are not there to deal with the pandemic. Ideally, we should be able to get every person in Jirapa a hand sanitizer but it is not possible. A small hand sanitizer in Accra is about GHS15. It is expensive. That is the challenge we are facing,” he noted.

    Meningitis in the Upper West

The Upper West Region has recorded over 303 cases of the disease and 44 deaths.

An earlier release issued by the Regional Health directorate cited the Nadowli Kaleo district and the Nandom municipality as the hardest-hit areas.

Even though the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has disclosed that the current outbreak of Meningitis in the Upper West Region is caused by a new strain of bacteria that has no vaccine, it has commenced an audit of the 37 Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) related deaths currently in the Upper West Region.

The Upper West Regional Director of health services, Dr. Osei Kuffuor Afreh said the outcome of the audit will enable the Ghana Health Service review treatment protocols on the endemic to prevent the recurrence of the high incidence of deaths in the region.

  • Messi or Ronaldo: Klopp picks Barcelona star ahead of ‘perfect’ rival

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp prefers Lionel Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo, even though he said the Juventus star was close to a “perfect player”.

Barcelona great Messi and Ronaldo are widely considered two of the greatest players of all-time, although just who is better continues to be debated .

While Klopp prefers Messi, the German paid tribute to both for their era of dominance, which has seen them win 11 of the past 12 Ballons d’Or.

Klopp lauded Ronaldo’s physical build, but said Messi was able to produce his magic while making it look so easy.

“For me Messi, but I couldn’t admire Ronaldo more than I do already,” Klopp told YouTube channel freekickerz.

“The explanation is the following. We’ve played against both already and both are almost impossible to defend.

“But Messi has much lower physical requirements from birth on. If you could paint yourself a perfect player, it would have Ronaldo’s height, he could jump and run as high or quick as Ronaldo can do. And what is then even added to that is his total attitude, it is absolutely perfect and professional, it couldn’t be any better.

“And on the other side there is the small Messi who makes everything look so simple. And therefore I like him maybe a little bit more as a player on the pitch. But Cristiano is also an absolutely incredible player.

“It’s really difficult therefore, but what both have in common is that both have left their footprints for such a long time.

“There are also some younger players who have a similar potential, but to do that over this time period is even more incredible.”

In an earlier interview, Klopp was asked which former Liverpool player he would sign if he could bring a legend back to the club in their peak.

The 52-year-old revealed that he would choose Steven Gerrard – but he jested the former skipper wouldn’t be an automatic selection.

“Stevie, that’s easy! But he’d have to fight for his place,” Klopp told BT Sport .

“The funny thing is we have lived for four-and-a-half years in the same town and I’ve never seen him before.

“Since the lockdown, I’ve seen him six or seven times. I go for a dog walk or a run or whatever, and he has a walk with the family, so we’ve seen each other more often than all the time together before!”

  • GhIPSS resumes MoMo interoperability charges from May 23

The Ghana Interbank Payments and Settlements Systems (GhIPPS) has directed financial institutions to end the fee waiver granted to customers who use the GhIPSS Instant Pay (GIP), Mobile Money Interoperability (MMI) and ACH Direct Credit to transact business.

“Following a review of financial position, we have decided we are unable to sustain the fee waiver regime any further and will re-instate all transaction fees with effect from May 23, 2020,” GhIPSS said in a statement.

Earlier, GhIPSS announced a waiver of transaction fees across three platforms namely; GhIPSS Instant Pay (GIP, Mobile Money Interoperability (MMI) and ACH Direct Credit.

This action was in support of the call to the financial services industry by the Bank of Ghana to encourage and promote the use of electronic payments and also to lighten the financial burden on the vulnerable members of the public in the light of the global pandemic and the impending containment measures by the Government of Ghana.

According to GhIPSS, “The sustainability of this gesture was premised on the assumption that inflows from our cheque and e-zwich business will cushion the company over the period of the waivers. Conversely, there was a significant reduction in the use of these two services; gravely impacting our bottom line,” hence the decision to end the fee waiver on the three platforms.

On March 19, the Central Bank announced some measures including the waiving of fees on some digital payment options including mobile money aimed at reducing cash transactions and boosting digital payments.

One of the key measures was that all mobile money users can send up to GHc100 for free (excluding cash out).

This includes sending to a recipient on the same network, or another network via the interoperability platform. Also, all mobile phone subscribers are now permitted to use their already existing mobile phone registration details to be on-boarded for Minimum KYC Account.

This subsequently led to GhIPSS announcing a waiver of transaction fees across three platforms: GhIPSS Instant Pay (GIP), Mobile Money Interoperability (MMI), and ACH Direct Credit.

  • Finding Domelevo guilty of contempt demoralising to corruption fight George Loh

Lawyer and former legislator, George Loh, has described the contempt conviction against the Auditor-General, Daniel Domelevo as a blow to the fight against corruption.

Speaking to Citi News, Mr. Loh said it “was not prudent for a judge to convict him [Mr. Domelevo] for contempt of court.”

“That way you are demoralising the whole architecture for fighting corruption,” he added.

Mr. Domelevo was found guilty of contempt of court for failing to respond to a suit filed by the Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo-Maafo, which was challenging a $1 million surcharge.

According to the court, Mr. Domelevo had said he was busy finishing up an audit report for Parliament hence his failure to respond to the suit.

Mr. Loh felt this reason for not meeting the deadline did no merit a contempt ruling.

“If you look at how this thing has panned out, I was of the view that nothing he has done constituted a deliberate attempt to do something that will be an affront to the dignity of the court.”

Another lawyer, Yaw Oppong, who represented the Senior Minister, described the outcome as fair.

“We had told the court that our client has never been so much interested in the [Auditor-General] being in prison so other remedies that will ensure the maintenance of the sanctity of the court so the court should be lenient with him.”

Despite the conviction, Mr. Domelevo will not face jail time.

The judge, Justice Botwe, in her ruling, said due to the important role the Auditor-General plays, she will opt to caution and discharge him rather than sentence him.

    Background to suit

Mr. Osafo Maafo and four other officials from the Ministry of Finance sued Mr. Domelevo to clear their names in relation to what was said to be breaches of the Public Procurement Act (PPA) that resulted in their payment of US$1 million to a private UK firm, Kroll and Associates.

Mr. Osafo Maafo had said he was resorting to the courts because “the evidence available shows clearly that the Auditor-General erred in law and professional procedures in the exercise of his powers regarding his audit on payments to Kroll and Associates Limited.”

“I have on Wednesday, 11th December 2019, instructed my lawyers to commence legal processes to challenge a Disallowance and Surcharge imposed on me by the Auditor-General following his notice on 24th October 2019.”

Mr. Domelevo had concluded that Kroll was paid for no work done, following what he said was the persistent failure of the Senior Minister to provide proof of actual work done.

He consequently recommended the disallowance of the payment of the US$1million to Kroll and Associates, which the government, through the Ministry of Finance paid.

Mr. Domelevo also surcharged Mr Osafo Maafo and four other officials from the Ministry of Finance.

  • The Premier League is the best, Partey must move Nuhu Adams

Ghana international Kasim Nuhu says he would be happy to see his close friend and room mate on international duty Thomas Partey play in “the best league in the world”.

Partey has been linked with move to Arsenal from Atletico Madrid while other reports have suggested Diego Simeone could use him as a hook to land Alex Oxlade Chamberlain from Liverpool.

Former Sierra Leone midfielder Rodney Strasser has recounted how Kevin-Prince Boateng’s stunning second-half heroics helped AC Milan defeat his Lecce 4-3 in 2011.

US Lecce were cruising to a 3-0 lead at half time before the introduction of Boateng after recess.

The Ghana forward netted a hat-trick within 18 minutes of coming after half-time, as a stunning second-half comeback for AC Milan saw the Rossoneri recover from three goals down to beat Lecce 4-3 at Stadio Via del Mare on Sunday.

An 83rd-minute header from Mario Yepes completed the fightback for the defending champions, who had been three goals adrift after 37 minutes following a shambolic first-half display.

Strasser could not forget that epic encounter and labelled Boateng as ‘incredible’ following his second-half audacious performance.

“In Lecce I felt very good. Too bad for the serious injury against Juve, I was the owner and I was making my contribution. I found myself very well with Di Francesco: a young coach who wanted us to play well. Even today that Lecce-Milan seems crazy to me. We won 3-0 after half an hour and were dominating. In the second half Boateng entered and alone he overturned everything. Incredible … ”

  • ‘Serious’ consequences if US reopens too fast: top government expert

The US government’s top infectious disease expert warned Congress Tuesday that ending lockdowns too quickly could bring severe consequences including new outbreaks of coronavirus just as the country tries to overcome the pandemic.

Anthony Fauci told a Senate panel the federal government had developed guidelines for local jurisdictions on how to safely re-open activities, and a sustained decrease in cases for 14 days was a vital first step.

“If a community or a state or region doesn’t go by those guidelines and reopens… the consequences could be really serious,” said Fauci.

Fauci acknowledged that US deaths caused by the virus are likely higher than the roughly 80,000 fatalities in the current official government toll.

This, he said, was because many people particularly in hardest-hit New York died at home before they could be admitted to a hospital.

But he also said he was “cautiously optimistic” about the prospects of a vaccine, with eight candidates currently undergoing clinical trials.

“We have many candidates and hope to have multiple winners,” he said. “In other words, it’s multiple shots on goal.”

    – Remote testimony –

Fauci, who has become the trusted face of the federal government’s virus response, was one of four top medical experts testifying remotely at the hearing of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

The New York Times had earlier reported Fauci would warn the country would see “needless suffering and death” if it rushed too quickly to re-open, but the remarks did not eventually feature in his opening address.

There has been frequent speculation that Fauci’s forthright approach has irritated President Donald Trump, who has been accused of downplaying the dangers of the crisis as he rushes to restart the economy.

Tuesday’s hearing was Fauci’s first appearance before Congress since Trump declared the coronavirus pandemic a national emergency on March 13.

The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Fauci himself is in “modified quarantine” after Vice President Mike Pence’s spokeswoman — who he had no close contact with — tested positive.

“Opening Up America Again” is name of the administration’s guidelines on a three-phase approach to help state and local officials reopen their economies, while observing medical advice on limiting the spread of the virus.

Among the administration’s requirements before moving to a phased comeback, states should have a “downward trajectory” of documented cases or positive tests, as a percentage of total tests, over two weeks.

There should be a robust testing program for at-risk healthcare workers, with asymptomatic cases screened as well, and contacts of positive cases traced.

Trump has been criticized as essentially abdicating any leadership role during the pandemic, leaving states on their own to grapple with their outbreaks and even bid against each other to obtain critical medical equipment on the open market or abroad.

While the situation has improved in New York — the epicenter of the US outbreak — progress has been slow elsewhere.

The US has reported more than 80,000 deaths and 1.3 million infections.

  • Dredging of Kpetoe river begins

Work has begun on the dredging of the Kpetoe River to help solve the perennial flooding of parts of Kpetoe township, the capital of Agotime Ziope District.

The three-kilometre project is currently underway.

Mr. John Kwaku Amenyah, Agotime Ziope District Chief Executive (DCE) who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency at Kpetoe on Monday said the project was expected to be completed in two weeks.

“The completion of this project will bring relief to the people as it will put to rest their horrid annual displacement and destruction of their properties”, he said.

The DCE said work had also resume on the construction of a culvert on River Akwetey, which has been stalled since 2008 and was also expected to be completed before the rain sets in this year.

  • Masks Ambassadors distribute 1,000 nose masks to Sunyani residents

The Mask Ambassadors in collaboration with the Sunyani Municipal Assembly at the weekend distributed 1,000 nose masks to high risk population in the Sunyani Municipality to stem the spread of the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).

Mask Ambassadors is a local group comprising media practitioners and health workers that advocates wearing of nose masks to protect the people from contracting the COVID-19.

Beneficiaries were mostly commercial drivers, motor riders, truck and wheel barrow pushers, head porters and the aged.

The exercise, started around 0900 hours and lasted for about five hours as the Ambassadors, together with the Sunyani Municipal COVID-19 taskforce paraded the principal streets of the Bono Regional Capital and distributed the nose masks randomly.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive underscored the importance for the populace to wear the masks and adhere to the social and physical distancing protocols as well.

She said hand washing under running water and use of hand sanitizers were still relevant in the fight against the spread of the disease, and advised the public to observe personal hygiene.

While commending the taskforce for their commitment in stemming the spread of the COVID-19 in the Municipality, Mad. Owusu-Banahene praised the Mask Ambassadors for the initiative and hoped they would intensify public education for the people to understand the need to wear the nose masks.

In a related development, the Bono Regional Directorate of the Ghana Health Service has taken 630 specimen to the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research (KCCR), since the region recorded a confirmed COVID-19 case last week.

Dr. John Ekow Otoo, the Deputy Director, Public Health at the Directorate told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview on Monday that 148 contacts had been traced so far.

The region’s confirmed case of the COVID-19 involved 27-year old Togolese who entered the country through an unapproved route at Sampa, a town along the Ghana-Cote d’Ivoire border in the Jaman North District.

He and nine others were arrested by the Ghana Immigration Service and the GNA learnt they had since been repatriated.

Dr. Otoo said most of the suspects whose samples had been taken were in self-quarantine, while the Jaman North District Assembly had arranged a quarantine centre for some of them.

He said the Directorate in collaboration with Bono Regional Coordinating Council had heightened surveillance and monitoring and called on the public to also do their best by complying with all directives to help stem the spread of the disease.

  • There will be chaos in Ghana if 2020 general elections are not held John Boadu warns

General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu has indicated that it is not negotiable that the 2020 general elections “must” be held on December 7 this year.

According to him, “the danger and chaos” that would be brought upon the country if the elections are postponed would be dire than what the deadly Coronavirus could ever cause.

Speaking in an interview with Kumasi-based Angel, John Boadu said the constitution does not make provisions for the order of succession should the President, his Vice, his ministers, all his chiefs executive and Parliamentarians be out of office by the night of January 6 2021 and so the whole state machinery would grind to halt; “if that vacuum is created, it would be dangerous than the coronavirus, because it would create a lot of confusion as to the way forward”.

“So it is a must that the election be held on 7th December, we are not the only people in the world, there are a lot of countries with far more cases of the virus than us but have successfully conducted elections by putting in place strict safety protocols to safeguard the voters; Mali has voted, South Korea has voted, Tanzania would vote in October, so I do not see anybody in Ghana opposing the elections on December 7, so the Electoral Commission must employ every means possible for us to vote on that day or the chaos that this country will go through, it will be more than the Coronavirus”, he said.

The NPP scribe also noted that, his party still holds its stance that the current voter register is not credible and so cannot be trusted for the upcoming general elections, but it cannot force the Electoral Commission to do their bidding.

In view of this, John Boadu urged President Akufo Addo and his government to be mindful of the exigencies of the time and consider easing the restrictions on social and public gatherings to allow the Electoral Commission to compile a new voters register and also allow political parties to conduct their primaries and start their electioneering campaigns.

“The President and the government must continue to have it at the back of their minds that, we must vote on December 7 at all cost and so must begin easing the restrictions on social and public congregations, so that the Electoral Commission can go ahead and do its work; the measures must also be relaxed so that political parties can do a bit of campaigning ahead of the elections”, John Boadu added.

  • EC has not yet released any election timetable – Sylvia Annoh

The Electoral Commission has urged the public, especially its stakeholders to disregard alleged election timetable and letters circulating on social media purported to have emanated from the Commission.

A statement signed by Mrs Sylvia Annoh, Acting Director, Public Affairs of EC and copied to the Ghana News Agency and signed said the Commission had its plans set for the compilation of the new Voters Register with a new Voter Management System for the upcoming 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections and had not been released yet.

It said the Commission was sensitive to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and would abide by the necessary precautions and safety protocols in the execution of its mandate when it deemed appropriate to begin the compilation of the register.

The statement noted with grave concern the comment by Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the Minority Leader, which attacked the integrity and mandate of the Commission at his press conference on May 7.

It said Mr Iddrisu was reported to have registered the displeasure of the National Democratic Congress on the management of the COVID-19 by the Commission in the performance of it official duties.

The statement refuted the allegation that the Commission had received Personal Protective Equipment from the government and found it troubling that Mr Iddrisu would put out such information.

It said the Commission would not be subjected to the direction of any person or authority in the discharge of its duties except as provided in the 1992 Constitution or any other law consistent with it.

Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, the Minister of Information, has said the government is not considering any alternative plan to hold on to power if election 2020 is not held as a result of COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.

Speaking at the Meet the Press on COVID-19 update, Mr Nkrumah said the government rather than hiding behind COVID-19 and contemplating an unconstitutional arrangement to cling to power, was focusing its energies to exploring innovative ways to ensure free, safe, transparent elections.

“…If countries like South Korea and Mali have successfully conducted elections in the midst of COVID-19 and Serbia, Ivory Coast, Burundi and the United States of America were looking for novel avenues to holding elections, our country will focus on finding way to conduct the 2020 December polls,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Minister said the government had requested the mission abroad to compile data on Ghanaians, who were stranded in countries to inform government policy direction and that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the end of the week would receive the data.

  • Auditor-General found guilty for contempt

An Accra High Court on Tuesday found Daniel Domelovo, the Auditor-General guilty of contempt in an application brought against him by the Senior Minister, Mr Yaw Osafo Maafo.

Mr. Osafo Maafo has issued a writ challenging a surcharge on him by the Auditor General.

The court presided over Mrs. Justice Afia Asare Botwe however cautioned and discharged Mr. Domelovo.

The senior Minister had pressed for the contempt against Mr Domelovo for refusing to file the documents on which his office surcharged the senior Minister.

Domelovo was required by law to have filed the documents in court within 14 days after the Minister has commenced a legal action challenging the surcharges against him.

The court in its ruling described as untenable the reasons given by the Auditor-General that because he was writing a report to Parliament, he saw the suit against him a month after his secretary had placed it on his desk. According to the court, evidence adduced indicated that the Auditor General was properly served with the court processes and he should have done the right thing.

Mr. Domelovo indicted the Ministry of Finance and Mr. Osafo Maafo for paying a United Kingdom Firm, Kroll and Associates Limited in 2017 to recover assets from some identified wrongdoers, among others without verifying the outcome. The Senior Minister resorted to the court saying the evidence available showed clearly that the Auditor-General erred in law and professional procedures in the exercise of his powers regarding his audit on payment of Kroll and Associate Limited.”

According to the Senior Minister the approval for the request for single source procurement of professional services was obtained contrary to claims by the Auditor-General that they failed to seek approval from the Public Procurement Authority.

  • Prof Mensa-Bonsu stresses difference between child socialisation and child labour

Supreme Court judge nominee Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu says it is important drawing the fine line between child socialisation and child labour.

She said in the cultural context of Ghana, a child helping with domestic chores or working to tender a garden cannot be classified as a victim of child labour.

The child, she said must be socialised into learning these needed skills.

Citing an instance, the nominee said she once visited an orphanage at Dodowa and was shocked that they had no garden despite the home having sufficient land.

Prof. Mensa-Bonsu said when she inquired, she was told there was no garden because the children were taught in school that it is child labour.

“I asked them who taught you that,” she stated.

The use of children on cocoa farms is a contentious issue with many saying it is a perception while others admitting it is a hidden truth and a well-known fact.

In 2010, findings of a research commissioned by Tulane University showed that a staggering 1.8 million children aged five to 17 years work in cocoa farms of Ivory Coast and Ghana at the cost of their physical, emotional, cognitive and moral well-being.

Regional Minister-designate rebuffs child labour claims on cocoa ...

The report further establishes that about 40 percent of children working in cocoa fields of Ivory Coast are not enrolled in schools and that only five percent of Ivorian children are paid for their work.

The United States Department of State particularly the Department of Labour (DOL) has downgraded Ghana citing child labour in the agriculture sector and in particular the cocoa sector.

The law professor said what is wrong is engaging the children in tasks which prevent them from going to school or otherwise harm their health.

This, the senior law lecturer said should not be tolerated but the distinction must be noted in the cultural context.

Another supporter who gave his name as Emmanuel Boateng pointed out that, “the allegations against our candidates by the Regional Vetting Committee are frivolous, malicious, baseless and false, therefore we are appealing to the party hierarchy to rescind that decision to disqualify them because we know it was a way of imposing a candidate on the good people of Atiwa East Constituency which will pave way for apathy and defection and a possible independent candidate.

“The disqualified aspirants are known to be active members of the party and they keep supporting the party and constituents in so many ways”.

When 3news.com contacted the Eastern Regional First Vice Chairman of the NPP, Alhaji Umar Bodinga, he explained that the issue is before the Appeals Committee of the party so the candidates must wait until the report is out.

  • Effia-Nkwanta hospital receives cheque for ventilators

The Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi has received a GH¢144, 387.25 cheque for the purchase of a mechanical ventilator for the health facility.

Mompe Heavy Haulage Company, an industrial haulage company based in Takoradi, made the donation on Monday to support the effective delivery of healthcare at the only referral health facility in the region.

General Manager of the company, Peter Everett, said their intervention was informed by a fundraising campaign being championed by Takoradi-based Skyy Media Group to support the regional hospital to procure ventilators.

“So we are giving this amount towards the purchase of a ventilator machine to enable the hospital effectively manage patients infected by the novel coronavirus disease and other respiratory conditions,” he said.

Mr. Everett stressed that the pandemic had overwhelmed many organizations, communities and the country to an extent, and as such, it was right to consider investment in the health service, so they could manage cases effectively.

“Even though it is not easy to pay this amount of money, we appreciate what everybody is doing during this pandemic and also for people to know that even though we are working we are still thinking of the people who are not being allowed to work,” he empathized.

Medical Director for Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, Dr. Joseph Tambil, thanked the company for the gesture, adding that the acquisition of the ventilator would be a relief.

“A few weeks ago, we received similar donation and we have been looking around for the ventilators but unfortunately could not get any,” he said.

He was happy that most business owners were still willing to give to support the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic even though their businesses might have been adversely affected and their margins brought down.

He promised on behalf of management to manage the funds and look for quality ventilator to buy and as well, adhere to its strict maintenance to ensure long life for it.

  • Life is sacred, I don’t support death penalty – Yoni Kulendi tells Vetting Committee

Renowned Private Legal Practioner, Mr. Yoni Kulendi, has said he does not support the death penalty under the Criminal and other Offences Act on the basis that legal processes are prone to error.

He was of the view that persons found guilty of committing a crime should be sentenced to life imprisonment rather than the death penalty because life is sacred and human life should not be terminated by anybody.

Mr. Yoni Kulendi made the comment before the Appointments Committee of Parliament today (Tuesday) during his Vetting as a nominee by the President to the Supreme Court. It was in response to a question by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP for North Tongu on his opinion about the death penalty.

In response to a question by Sampson Ahi, MP for Bodi on Legal education in the country, Mr. Yoni Kulendi said there is the need for reform in legal education in the country.

He, therefore, suggested the conduct of a comprehensive study to determine the type of reform needed in legal education in the country.

Answering another question by Sampson Ahi on what he will do in a situation where a case involving the President, Nana Akufo-Addo comes before the Supreme Court if his (Kulendi’s) nomination is approved by Parliament since he worked with him in his Chambers as a lawyer from 1995 to 2002, Mr. Yoni Kulendi said he will abide by the oath of a Judge which requires Judges to be fair, just, equitable and reasonable in their judgment.

Answering a question by the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu on the upper limit of Judges who should be appointed to the Supreme Court, Mr Yoni Kulendi said there should be no specific limit to the number of Judges to be appointed to the Supreme so that as and when necessary Judges could be appointed to serve as Supreme Court Judges without the need for amendment of the Constitution.

  • Reimburse balance of GH¢40m used to feed Ghanaians during the lockdown – Anim Piesie to government

A communications team member of the largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bernard Anim Piesie, has called on authorities responsible for funds disbursed by government to feed citizens during the 3-week partial lockdown to account for it and reimburse Ghanaians.

When the lockdown was announced by President Akufo-Addo in March, the Gender Ministry announced measures to feed the vulnerable.

The government began to distribute free meals to over 400,000 Ghanaians in locked-down areas.

Some people also had foods like rice, yam in its raw state and it helped to ease the economic hardship that comes with COVID-19.

However, the NDC Communicator on UTV’s ‘Adekye Nsroma’ newspaper discussion segment lamented that, “the amount and quality of cooked foods distributed during the partial lockdown days will not amount to the allocated 40 million Ghana cedis, neither will the uncooked foods shared to citizens will amount to the same money allocated by government, so all we expect from government is to find means of retrieving the balance. Definitely there must be a balance”.

Tetteh explaining why he joined the Phobians said that, “Hearts is part of the numerous clubs that contacted me but I chose them because I wanted to feel at home. I followed my heart. It is a dream come true to sign for Hearts of Oak. All my family members are fans of Hearts. My father is even called Phobia.”

“Everything has gone through and I have signed a three year contract with Accra Hearts of Oak.”

“There are players in the team before I came, we have to play together as a team. I am a Hearts player now and have trained with the team. I cannot talk about a different team.”

“Ismail Ganiyu of Kotoko is my friend, so it is normal we argue from opposite sides. Every player wants to play in a competitive game like Kotoko v Hearts similar to the El Classico (Barcelona v Real Madrid).”

“I will urge the supporters to continue to pray for the whole team but not for individual players. We are hoping and praying for COVID-19 to end so that we can continue our football season”.

  • Hearts of Oak finally get new bus

Communications Director for Accra Hearts of Oak, Mr. Kwame Opare Addo has disclosed that the club is close to sorting out issues with regards to their new bus and they will soon start using the bus.

The Ghanaian giants are set to put an end to years of backlash and ridicule by rival clubs and other football stakeholders for using an old bus which was often tagged as a death trap.

In the early months of this year, the management of the club managed to secure a 48-seater bus through Star Assurance who are their insurance partners.

Prior to the suspension of the Ghana Premier League, there were talks that the bus was ready for use but it was never outdoored.

In an interview with Fox FM today, Opare Addo shed more light on the bus after indicating that it will be ready for use very soon.

“There are a few things we have to go through before we can finally take the delivery of our new bus. It is in the final stages. It will not take long for the bus to be used”, he said.

  • Coronavirus: The Colombian jail with 859 cases

The director of a prison in the Colombian city of Villavicencio says overcrowding is to blame for one of the country’s worst coronavirus outbreaks.

More than 850 inmates and members of staff have been infected.

“How can I ensure there is isolation if there are people sleeping under the beds and in the bathrooms?” asked prison director Miguel Ángel Rodríguez.

He said that when the outbreak started, there were 1,835 inmates at the jail, more than double its capacity.

Mr Rodríguez was answering questions about the outbreak at Villavicencio prison during a virtual session of the regional assembly in Meta province.

He alleged that the Colombian state had “abandoned” the jail. “There are working groups and security councils where a lot of ideas are thrown around and lots of papers are signed, but there are no results. Red tape is paralysing us, and inside the prison we’re doing what we can.”

Two weeks ago, police foiled an escape attempt by a group of inmates who had started building a tunnel.

The prison director said 1,750 inmates were currently being held at the jail and that the overcrowding made it impossible to slow the spread of the virus.

“The areas we use to isolate [inmates] are not ideal,” he said, adding that prison authorities were moving prisoners into one of the carpentry workshops to create more space.

To make matters worse, there is also a shortages of doctors at the prison.

Last week, Colombia’s director of prison services, Lissette Cervantes, said that doctors working at Villavicencio jail had quit because they had not been given the necessary protective equipment.

“It’s not because they just felt like it or even because they were afraid, they just can’t go unprotected into what is like a war [against the virus],” Ms Cervantes said.

Nationwide, Colombia has more than 11,500 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 479 people have died, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

  • Coronavirus: How many people have died in the UK?

The number of people who have died because of Covid-19 is nearly twice as high as the figure we hear announced every day.

By 1 May, the number of coronavirus deaths announced by the UK government was just over 28,000.

Looking back at death registrations filed then, the figure is higher: just under 36,000 death certificates mentioned Covid-19.

The measure preferred by statisticians, counting all deaths above what would be expected, was even higher: more than 50,000.

    Each measure answers different questions.

Why should I not rely on the government’s daily figure? Every day the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) reports on the number of coronavirus deaths that have been reported to it across the UK.

This is the figure read out at the daily press conference, and the figure used on most international comparison sites.

But it only includes deaths of people who test positive for coronavirus.

That is fine for scientists who want to monitor patterns in the growth of the epidemic precisely: the rate of increase and time spent at the peak are useful measures, says Prof Sylvia Richardson, who is president-elect of the Royal Statistical Society and based at the University of Cambridge.

But it’s a poor measure of the overall death toll because it misses people who never had a test.

When testing was largely limited to hospitals in the UK, those daily figures were missing most deaths in the community.

On top of this, different countries use different definitions.

For example, England excluded deaths outside hospitals from its daily count until a few weeks ago. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland didn’t.

And Belgium includes suspected cases of coronavirus in its daily count, which makes their figures look unusually high compared to other countries.

That makes it hard to do precise like-for-like comparisons between countries, and scientists warn against reading too much into small absolute differences in these daily statistics.

When every country counts things differently, statisticians turn to a different measure – with a simpler definition.

Looking at all deaths If you look at all deaths in a country, irrespective of cause, you will capture the deaths missed by lab testing, the misdiagnosed deaths and the deaths caused by the strain the virus puts on our society.

Of course, you’ll capture the heart attacks and car accidents that might have happened anyway.

But the total number of deaths registered in a week normally follows a predictable pattern.

It has shot up since the end of March, running far higher than the previous weeks or what would be expected at this time of year. That number has fallen in recent weeks but we’re still seeing more deaths than would be expected at this time of year.

And it’s these extra or “excess” deaths, the difference between the number we normally see and what we’re seeing at the moment, that statisticians use to capture the true toll of the coronavirus.

    What does it tell us?

Adding the weekly excess up over the weeks of the epidemic and it comes to just over 50,000 by 1 May, higher than either the number of death registrations that mention Covid-19 or the UK government’s daily count.

About three-quarters of this excess can be accounted for by deaths that mention Covid-19 on the death certificate – that total was just over 36,000.

But there are still nearly 14,000 deaths, itself a significant spike, that could be undiagnosed deaths caused directly by the coronavirus or those caused by it indirectly.

That gives a clearer picture of the total cost of the virus.

It can also be a better measure for comparing countries because it doesn’t depend on which deaths get counted.

Making comparisons But it still “needs to be put into perspective” says Prof Richardson.

The UK releases deaths data every week, but that’s not the case for all countries.

Some publish data daily, some monthly or quarterly, making it difficult to compare from a similar starting point.

The things that make coronavirus dangerous also differ between countries.

You would expect to see more excess deaths in Italy, where the average age is 47, than in Ireland, where it’s 40.

That’s all before you get to the actions that governments take to address the virus: how quickly and how hard they lockdown or how effectively they test and track and quarantine cases of the virus and how the health system copes.

  • Boachipe residents reject coronavirus measures, count on gods for protection

Residents of Boachipe, a farming community in the Central Gonja District of the Savannah Region are of the firm belief that they are free from contracting COVID-19 because they are protected by their community gods.

According to the residents, they have consulted their gods and have followed instructions of the gods and are therefore immune and free from contracting the disease.

As a result, residents still go about their normal duties without adhering to the COVID-19 protocols.

The residents made this known when a volunteer of People for Health (P4H), a non-governmental organization in health in the Central Gonja District, Mbamba Mark Osman and his team, visited the community to educate them on the COVID 19 safety measures.

All efforts made by the team to educate members of the community proved futile as they refused to listen to them.

They claimed that they have adhered to the directives of their gods and would never disobey it.

According to them, they have the biggest and most potent shrine that has never let them down and therefore will protect them against the virus.

When the team tried convincing the elders and opinion leaders of the community, they reaffirmed the position of the community saying that “the gods have assured us that the virus would not get into the community”.

  • Bryan Adams criticised for coronavirus tirade on Instagram

Rock star Bryan Adams is facing criticism after posting an expletive-laden coronavirus rant on social media.

The singer was originally due to be performing in London this week before lockdown measures came into force.

“Thanks to some bat eating, wet market animal selling, virus making greedy [expletives], the whole world is now on hold,” Adams wrote on Instagram.

Many interpreted the star’s comments as anti-Asian or anti-Chinese, but he was praised by some animal rights groups.

The BBC has contacted Adams’ representatives for comment.

‘Irresponsible’ After his comments were published, Adams was criticized by Amy Go, president of the Chinese Canadian National Council for Social Justice.

“This is so irresponsible and just so, so, so, so racist,” she told CBC News. “People look up to public figures. He is seen as an idol by many.

Go suggested Adams’ comments would intensify “racist hatred against Chinese”.

Many people believe wet markets in Wuhan, China, were the the original source of coronavirus.

Wet markets sell fresh produce straight from the farm, including meat, fish and other perishable goods. The presence of wild animals at such markets can drive extinction and spread disease.

Last Friday, the World Health Organisation said one such market in the central Chinese city of Wuhan played a role in the outbreak either as the source or possibly as an “amplifying setting”, while stressing more research on the link was necessary.

‘Damage has been done’ Adams comments came on the night he was supposed to start a three-night residency at London’s Albert Hall.

“Tonight was supposed to be the beginning of a tenancy of gigs… but thanks to some [expletive] bat-eating, wet-market animal-selling, virus-making greedy [expletives], the whole world is now on hold, not to mention the thousands that have suffered or died from this virus,” he wrote.

“My message to them other than ‘thanks a [expletive] lot’ is go vegan.”

A link to the post has since been deleted from his Twitter account, but Adams’ original statement remains on his Instagram page. By Tuesday morning, his name was trending on social media.

“Wow. What racist garbage coming from someone I respected,” wrote Instagram user @globalcanuck.

“Bryan Adams’ racist xenophobic tirade has been up for 10 hours now. Damage has been done,” added Dr Wing Kar Li on Twitter.

The top trending comment came from @bornmiserable, who parodied the lyrics to Adams’ signature song Summer Of 69.

However, animal rights group Peta noted that Adams’ intention was to promote veganism.

“This is why its crucial for everyone to go vegan now to prevent the next pandemic,” it wrote in a reply to the star’s Instagram post.

“It’s up to us to create a kinder, healthier future for all species.”

  • Coronavirus: ‘Science experts’ should be at the forefront, not politicians – Kabila

CPP Acting General Secretary, James Kwabena Bomfeh says the Ministry of Information should leave communication and education on the novel Coronavirus to health Professionals.

According to James Kwabena Bomfeh, popularly called Kabila, the health Professionals wield knowledge in dealing with pandemics and therefore are the best people to spearhead public education on the disease.

Kabila made this solemn appeal on ‘Kokrokoo’ on Peace FM.

Making his submissions on the COVID-19 and matters arising, Kabila vehemently warned against the political dimensions creeping into discussions on the issue.

“If you say the experts should be at the forefront of the communication, let the experts be at the forefront . . . Leave the explanations to the science experts because even though this is a novel pandemic, the truth of the matter is that they have knowledge and experience to deal with pandemics. So, they can better relate to the issues arising from this thing than any of us,” he pleaded.
